By DANE LILLINGSTONE IN RESPONSE to the article last week ‘When dogs attack,’ local businessman Stephen Fox and his wife Marie-Rose felt they could help out.

Mr Fox runs Perfect Water Systems and said that when he and his wife heard the story of Craig Rowley and his dog, they wanted to do something. He said that he had had

his problems with council before and that he and his wife were both moved by the story.

They decided to donate $100 for Hank’s medical fees. Mr Row-

ley was surprised and very thankful at the gesture and both he and the Southern Free Times would like to thank Stephen and Marie-Rose for their generosity.

Ms Powers said that there were no set prices for the items with her main goal being to raise awareness.

“Beanies and scarves will be sold for donations for whatever people can afford to pay. I don’t want to put any prices, because there are people who can’t afford anything,” she said.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE STANTHORPE local Carol Power from Carol Power Hats, Clothing and Crafts will be holding a fundraiser for the Brain Cancer Foundation at her store on Saturday.

She will be holding a beanie and scarf stall at her store at 35 Maryland Street, Stanthorpe this Saturday 1 August from 9am to 1pm.

All proceeds will go towards the Brain Cancer Foundation.

Ms Power’s nephew was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer and she would like to raise all the awareness she can to help.

Her nephew Brad is 33 years old. He and his wife have three kids and the youngest is 10 months old.

“I just want to show my nephew how much I care about him,” Ms Powers said.

“My nephew has brain cancer, and it’s the least funded cancer

Local group gives back

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Warwick Warriors Woodcutters attended Mount Gordon last week for a good old-fashioned bush tucker lunch with the students.

Jaffle irons in half barrel drums, cheerios, billy tea and damper were on offer as students met the members of the Woodcutters where member Johno Felton gave them a speech about the dangers of drugs and the importance of respect.

Mr Felton said the Woodcutters group came about through mutual interests.

“We all we used to go and just cut loads of wood, and we thought we all love these days, why don’t we just form a little group,” he said.

“We just like going out sitting in the bush, setting up our chairs, lighting up a fire and doing our billy tea and damper and we cut up a load of wood and we raffle it. With those proceeds, we give it to charity. We’re all that stage in our lives when we

wanna give something back. So we give something back.”

Mr Felton said they helped out anyone who’s doing it a bit tough from Mount Gordon to anyone who’s struggling. “(We help) If there’s a veteran in trouble or someone in need or if someone needs a load of wood, or whatever.”

The group is an exclusive one with Mr Felton saying they hand pick their members.

“There are only 10 (in the group).

The criteria is you’ve got to be a veteran, served in the military, like the bush and be a fair dinkum bloke,” he said.

“Probably 80 per cent of us are veterans suffering battle stress or PTSD, we call it battle stress.”

“One of them came down in a chopper crash, lost a couple of his mates.”

Their current plans are to have a new memorial in Leslie Park.

“We have a veteran from one of

“We’ve wrote our expression of interest. At the moment, he’s coming up with the draft copy of the proposal. It’ll take a few years.”

but we want something with the wow factor that will stand out.”

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council in conjunction with fire agencies has completed construction of 22 kilometres of strategic fire trails across the region.

Mayor Peter Blundell said the $42,400 in funding had come through the Queensland Disaster Mitigation and Resilience program in 2014 for the fire trails project. The Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES) and Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) were involved in the project.

“These newly completed fire trails are primarily situated in the Braeside area of our region. They will facilitate access for fire-fighting personnel and resources to areas of strategic importance during fire fighting operations to protect local communities, property and infrastructure from the spread of bush fires,” Mayor Blundell said.

“The new fire trails have successfully broken down what was a very large and generally inaccessible area into smaller more manageable blocks, which will help firefighters to control fires in days, not weeks, as has been the case in the past.”

Council’s Disaster Management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said that following a commissioning drive and different tests, it was ready to commence operation.

“All of the firefighters involved in the commissioning drive were happy with the result and believe it will be a big help in providing access into this area to combat bushfires,” Mr Saunders said.

Council spent close to $50,000 last year in the Ballandean fire supporting RFSQ operations. The incident was responsible for approximately 5000 burnt hectares.

It is expected that the fire trails will be a huge benefit to the community.

“Fire trails provide a more effective and safer means of access for firefighters to combat a fire which, in turn, helps prevent the spread of the fire and minimises the damage caused,” Mr Saunders said.

“Land owners are likely to incur less damage to fences, stock, feed and infrastructure, and fewer resources will be required to fight a fire, resulting in a reduced cost to the community in general,” he said.

The fire trails do not cross private land and are not open for public use.

The Strategic Fire Trails project is a joint initiative between the Southern Downs Regional Council, the Queensland Government and the Commonwealth Government.

A survey carried out by members of the Southern Downs Protection Group of local residents in Goomburra, Allora and Berat revealed 92 per cent of respondents were against the invasive mining.

President of the Southern Downs Protection Group Sarah Moles said the proposed development would threaten the town of Allora, agricultural land, water bores, Dalrymple Creek and Condamine River.

“This is the first time that a Southern Downs community has taken steps to declare itself coal mining and gas field free and we are all very excited,” Ms Moles said.

“We want to stop the threat of this devastating coal mine before it’s too late and this is the community’s way of saying to APEC coal ‘don’t think you can just walk in and bully us into accepting your proposal’.”

In a report obtained by the ABC, the officer was reported to be off duty and intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Crime bender A 19-YEAR-OLD Thornlands man fronted Warwick Magistrates’ Court on Monday on charges of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, stealing, attempted arson and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

The man is said to have gone on a crime spree, allegedly stealing three vehicles and entering four premises.

Two vehicles were stolen in Warwick and one from Bestbrook on the Cunningham Highway.

He is also alleged to have entered other vehicles and stolen wallets.

He spent Sunday night at the Warwick watchhouse after being located and arrested in Warwick.

He has been transferred to appear at Beenleigh Court House on 19 August where he will face 21 charges.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE McCulkin murder case took another turn in Brisbane’s Magistrates’ Court last week when parts of evidence from the case were said to be “unsearchable.”

Arresting officer Detective Sergeant Virginia Gray was ordered by the court to appear on Friday to explain why a deadline was not met.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions failed to hand the evidence over to the defence team for 77-year-old Warwick man Vincent O’Dempsey and 67-year old Maryborough man Garry Reginald Dubois.

The two men face court for eight offences including murder and deprivation of liberty.

The court heard on Friday that Mr O’Dempsey’s lawyer, Terry O’Gorman, had requested more than 160 pieces of information related to the case.

Mr O’Gorman questioned Sergeant Gray as to why there was a hold-up in delivering the evidence.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE 2015 Jumpers and Jazz in July has wrapped up for another successful year this past weekend.

Palmerin Street and Leslie Park both witnessed a massive influx of crowds as the Stroll ‘N’ Swing shut down the main strip on Saturday and the Picnic in the Park took over Leslie Park on Sunday.

Unfortunately rain on Friday night meant the Jumpers and Jazz Race Day was cancelled but that didn’t stop crowds from flocking to the streets over the weekend.

Warwick Tourism and Events CEO Tracy Vellacott was full of praise for this year’s festival.

“For us it was certainly bigger and the feedback we’ve received suggests it was our best yet in 12 years,” she said.

“The feedback on this last weekend, particularly the Saturday Stroll ‘N’ Swing, people were just wowed by the number of people in Palmerin Street on Saturday.

“It was great to see that growth there.”

The main strip of Palmerin was full to the brim with people on Saturday as regional produce and wine, live jazz and the Suitcase Rummage took centre stage.

Bands and musicians popped

Palmerin Street was packed for the Suitcase Rummage. up on street corners around town and provided a little taste of jazz everywhere.

On Sunday the Picnic in the Park was not deterred by the ominous storm clouds and muddy puddles.

The Warwick Potters art and craft markets were a huge success. Jazz on the main stage kept everyone entertained as families, locals and tourists converged on the food stalls and markets.

“It’s always great to get to the end of the festival and feel satisfied that we’ve all done our very best and it’s been well received.

“Just today I went up and grabbed a few lunchtime groceries and, you know, the people were stopping me in the street to say ‘congratulations on the festival’ they thoroughly enjoy it,” Ms Vellacott said.

Next year’s Jumpers and Jazz is due to start on 21 July 2016.

INDEPENDENT schools received a 7.5 per cent bump in recurrent funding in the 2015-16 state budget.

A total of $628.4 million of recurrent funding was allocated for non-state schools in the budget, a 7.5 per cent increase on last year.

The budget includes an additional allocation of $41.2 million in capital assistance for non-state schools, taking total capital funding to $123.6 million in 2015-16.

The Scots PGC College principal Simon Shepherd said it represented a showing of faith by the government in independent education and would benefit Warwick as a whole.

“Scots PGC welcomes the Palaszczuk government’s 7.5 per cent increase in funding for nonstate schools.

"This can be seen as clear recognition of the value of independent education and the choice it provides parents,” he said.

“Warwick is an educational hub with a number of independent schools making up a significant sector of the Warwick economy.

“The multiplier effect of these schools for the economy of Warwick is noteworthy and any funding from the Palaszczuk government that helps these schools maintain their affordability, quality of education and opportunities for students should be welcomed by the whole community and, of course, the schools.”

Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) executive director David Robertson said the increase would ensure the current delivery of high-quality education and assist schools with increasing enrolments.

“This capital investment recognises the important role that independent schools play in the provision of school infrastructure across Queensland and that funding is required for new and expanding schools,” he said.

“The total additional capital funding of $123.6 million over the next three years will be important for independent schools as they continue to cater for increased enrolments and for the upgrading of school facilities”.

Rates strike TO the ratepayers and taxpayers of the SDRC. Who would stand with me on “not” paying rates at all for those with “no services” and for those other people who came here to live as it was affordable “just” to make ends meet and where we found there is little work for most.

We would pay only last year’s rate amount until this council is accountable. One issue is the Killarney wastewater amount on top of the water use that was to be taken off after three years of payment into the infrastructure that is now still being charged and should be refunded to ratepayers. You thought we would forget or be too busy or lethargic to challenge this discrepancy. We are up in arms now!

Promises, promises BEFORE the last election PM Tony promised, if elected, his mob would create a swag of jobs. However, he should have said: “I will create jobs for overseas people and interests”.

The jobs have gone to asylum seekers, a security contract awarded to a firm from Israel, submarines that could be built in South Australia will most probably go to Japan, and a Spanish company won the contract to build the Toowoomba second range crossing, thousands of backpackers are swarming over the country taking jobs from locals and Ford, Holden and Toyota have, or will soon, fly the coop.

What other conclusion can we draw than the Abbott regime is full to the brim with hypocrites. And finally, by 2025 a MILLION live cattle will be going to China annually while Australia’s citizens will be starving for meat because it will be too costly to buy.

New president roars in CONCETTO Lo Giudice has taken up the gavel as the new president of the Lions Club of Warwick.

Concetto's installation ceremony at the Criterion Hotel late last month was the club’s 58th, with Con taking over from outgoing president Jeff Ferguson.

It was a big night for Con, who also won the Lions Clubs International Foundation's highest award - the Melvin Jones Fellowship.

There were 53 guests invited to the dinner, including the member for Southern Downs Lawrence Springborg, Warwick Mayor Peter Blundell, members of Zonta and local services clubs and Zone Lions Club of Stanthorpe and Killarney.

Chairman for the night, Lion Bob Lester, conducted the ceremony and

introduced Club Youth of the Year, Scots College student, Jack McCullough who raised a toast to the Lions International.

Outgoing president Jeff Ferguson said in his report that he was lucky to have had the back-up of dedicated Lions working tirelessly to get so many projects accomplished, and donations were around $13,000 for the year.

Beneficiaries included young Angus Bowles, Lions Clubs International Foundation, Care Flights, and Angel Flight to mention a few.

Also a special award went to Lion Cec Watts (the prestigious Life Membership Award).

Cec was president of the club twice and held various other positions in his 40 years as a Lions member.

Students in Junior Wonderland

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Scots PGC College will be presenting a production of Alice in Wonderland Junior next week.

On Friday 7 August and Saturday 8 August the Warwick Town Hall will be transformed into a fantasy land as the play, based on the 1951 Disney film and the novels The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, comes to life.

There will be three Alices in the play with grade 12 student Ebony Wickham playing the main role.

It will be Ebony’s first musical but she has a long history with performance and music.

Her resume is already quite impressive regularly performing at the Tamworth Country Music Festival and having performed at Warwick’s Christmas Carols in the Park, Killarney’s Carols and numerous renditions of the national anthem in the Southern Downs area.

Ebony said the play would represent the diversity Scots PGC has to offer.

“It wasn’t just for drama class but the middle years, senior, everyone was involved.

JULY bought some interesting weather to the Southern Downs and Granite Belt with two distinct snow falls within a week of each other.

Snow had not fallen in the region since 1984 and this year it made up for it with a large fall across Stanthorpe and up to Dalveen on the northern edge of the Granite Belt.

Warwick broke a record on 17 July with a lowest maximum of only 8.6c but rainfall was below average with only 20mm recorded for the month in Warwick.

During August, cold fronts are expected to develop to the south of the continent and generate rain for southern and western parts of the country but it will not affect Southern Queensland.

Only one rain event is expected from the north during the second week of August.

The remainder of the month will be mainly dry.

Temperatures during August should remain near average although there is a 64 per cent chance of exceeding the minimum temperature for the month.

Frost can be expected during the first half of August, mainly in the south of the region, while warmer temperatures may be experienced later in the month.

Some models are indicating a rare August cyclone to develop around the Solomon Islands early in the month and at this stage may move towards the south-west.

It will not affect Australia’s mainland but would certainly be one for the history books.

The main factor influencing our weather over the next few months is a

strengthening El Nino.

Monitoring has indicated the El Nino is strengthening and tropical Pacific Ocean temperatures have been one degree above average for 10 consecutive weeks. This will lead to a drier than normal spring and summer for the Southern Downs and Granite Belt.

All indications show a continued strengthening with +2c expected by the end of August.

This El Nino is expected to continue into early 2016 leading to a dry season for farmers in our region.

GRAEME Howie and Rex Dallas are on their way to the Tenterfield Golf Club.

The pair will perform as part of a fund-raiser for the Tenterfield Community Care For Patients Committee, which raises money to purchase equipment for a local hospital.

The event will be held at the Golf Club on Monday 10 August from 10am until noon at the cost of $15 per head, pay at the door.

Morning tea will be available throughout the morning.

Graeme usually performs with his twin brother John as the Howie Bros but the latter won’t be attending this year as he is leading a tour through Ireland and Scotland.

Instead, the multi-talented Rex Dallas will be support act for the day.

Sights and sounds of the region WHETHER it be playing golf or getting off the beaten track, Killarney has a wide range of activities to enjoy.

Rodeo show On 8 August the Killarney Rodeo and Show Society will hold its Bulls, Barrels and Kids event from 10am with the evening program from 3pm.

Gate admission is $5 and free entry for school children.

Then on 30 August it will hold the Waddle and Saddle - a mixed ride for horse riders, cyclists and walkers along the historic Condamine River Road in the beautiful Condamine Gorge near Killarney.

The road is part of the Bicentennial National Trail.

On the day of the Waddle and Saddle, the road is closed to vehicle traffic and participants follow in the tracks of the bullock teams and pioneers through the soaring cliffs and 14 river crossings of the gorge, enjoying a billy tea and damper along the way before returning home to a barbecue lunch.

Cycling The scenic area surrounding Killarney is a popular cycling area with a variety of terrain to suit all levels of experience.

The undulating open country to the west of Killarney makes for easy and scenic rides and there are many sealed roads with little traffic as an alternative to the highway.

It is estimated there are more than 170 bird species, many of which are rare and threatened.

Lining up for the race to the finish

By CASEY O’CONNOR ROUND 20 is done and dusted and the race to the finish line has moved into the home straight hurtling towards the 2015 minor premiership.

As is too often the case, the focus in the past few days has been on the off-field stories rather than the superb efforts of the teams leading the competition.

While the Broncos and Cowboys continued to dominate in their games, the Roosters and Bunnies have ramped up their performances.

Recent form indicates we will be talking more about them in the next few weeks while Sharks’ fans have been rewarded for their persistence and solidarity.

Their side now sits in sixth spot.

And so the challenge continues for tipsters in round 21 - the Superhero Round.

The Roosters and Bulldogs kick off on Friday night at Allianz while Melbourne hosts cellar dwellers the Tigers at AAMI Park.

The Roosters thrashed the Tigers in round 20 barely getting out of first gear while the Bulldogs let the big Belmore crowd down with a lukewarm performance against the Sharks.

Their complacent attitude gave fans plenty of reason to question their commitment and both coach and captain were clearly unimpressed post-match.

This is a danger game for the Roosters so expect the Dogs to come out snarling and if the Roosters are to remain in the top four this is a must-win game.

After an error riddled performance against the Bulldogs the Tigers have slumped to the bottom of the ladder and this week must

regroup before facing the Storm at AAMI Park.

Melbourne is building momentum.

Its recent form has been a reminder that it is a team that can hang tough when things are not going its way and turn those experiences into winning form.

It will win here and will be there knocking on the door of the top four by the end of the season.

In recent weeks the Warriors’ form has been outstanding and plenty of people were willing to name them the 2015 Premiership Smokey’s.

It is fair to say that those dreams were shattered along with Shaun Johnson’s leg and ankle in last weekend’s game against Manly.

Any team, no matter where it sits in the competition, finds it difficult to replace its playmaker.

When it is last season’s Golden Boot winner the task is even more onerous.

Cronulla fans were smiling after their Belmore win but again its players are making the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The Sharks have stood down Andrew and David Fifita pending further investigation of their behaviour at a game under the jurisdiction of the Penrith and District Junior Rugby League.

Cronulla will travel to NZ without the Fifita brothers but should still have enough bite to overcome the wounded Warriors.

One of the highlights of this round will be the clash between the Cowboys and Raiders at 1300 Smiles on Saturday night.

The second placed Cowboys are in a purple patch of form as the combination of JT and Jake Granville grows stronger.

Despite being in arguably their best ever form the Cowboys have

a challenge on their hands this weekend.

The Raiders have a good headto-head record against the Cowboys.

The Raiders prevailed against the Panthers in a high scoring game at Pepper Stadium and sit just outside the eight.

The young Raiders side is finding its feet under Ricky Stuart’s leadership and is capable of causing some headaches for the Cowboys.

Blake Austen is in superb form and Edrick Lee is showing why selectors called him into the Maroons camp.

A danger game for the NQlanders and tipsters. I am leaning slightly towards the Cowboys.

Manly notched up its best win this season when it defeated the Warriors 32-12 at Mt Smart Stadium.

The club has finally come clean and announced the worst kept secret in the NRL - club legend Geoff Toovey is to be replaced as coach in 2016.

There are reports that a razor gang is also about to let loose on current players which may be linked to some improved on-field performances.

This weekend their form will be tested when they host the competition front runners Brisbane at Bluetongue Stadium.

RUGBY league and some rugby league players seem intent on doing the game harm. At a time when we should be focused on the machinations of the top eight in the NRL - who is in - who is out and who might win the Minor premiership we are hit with yet another drama of players own doing -the appalling behaviour of the Fifita brothers at a junior league game last weekend. The pair have been handed a 12-month ban by Penrith Junior Rugby League. They have been stood down by Cronulla and face an NRL inquiry into the matter.

One has to wonder at what point players and supporters will get the message that it is not okay to abuse referees at any level.

This was by all accounts an ugly incident, and I suspect that no amount of argument by heavy weight legal eagles will prevent the proverbial book being thrown at the pair.

Hopefully, this incident will be the catalyst, the line in the sand where the NRL and officials back the referees and say enough is enough.

NRL is a great product and those involved in running the game can beat their chests and marvel at the success of State of Origin and the NRL but without referees at grassroots and above, there will be no game no matter how many $$$ the television and media rights bring in.

The game is losing referees at all levels, and in particular young referees, at an alarming rate. You cannot blame anyone for walking away given the abuse they cop for either being a volunteer or simply doing their job. No referee or volunteer at any game should require a police escort to leave a football ground. Unfortunately, it is a situation that is becoming all too familiar.

You only need to look at the refereeing situation in our own backyard to know the difficulty in finding people willing to do the job. It is hard enough to find someone week in week out to run a line locally.

The problem however is not unique to Australia a recent report revealed that a NZ provincial rugby league competition has been pushed to the brink of extinction partly because of sideline and onfield abuse.

The only two referees in Gisborne are quitting at the end of the season, leaving Gisborne Tairawhiti Rugby League with the prospect of having no referees for next year.

It has left the game in the area at a crossroads. Two decades of rebuilding the sport in the area could now count for zip. In a sad indictment of rugby league and their supporters, five games have been called off in the region this year - three were for fighting/alleged referee assault/brawl. Oh did I mention there was also a problem with isolated, violent incidents.

There is a need to address sideline and on-field behaviour at all levels including and most importantly at junior level where players learn the basics and the rights and wrongs of the game.

Playing junior sport should be a rite of passage for kids everywhere. It should be a positive experience.

Time for the NRL to stand up and be counted and show plenty of support for the men in the middle with the whistle. Without them there is no game.

- Casey MOTOR RACING ROYALTY HEADING TO LEYBURN SOME of Australia’s best known motor racing identities of past decades will be in the spotlight when the Historic Leyburn Sprints host the inaugural Legends Dinner during the 20th anniversary event in August.

Paul Stokell, John French, Bob Holden, Jim Bertram, Brian Michelmore and John English will attend the dinner on Saturday 15 August at where else other than the historic Leyburn Royal Hotel.

It is fitting that the function is to be held at the historic venue which has a licence that dates back as far as 1863.

Bo Seton, now aged 78, won the 1965 Bathurst Armstrong 500 and will be making his first appearance at Leyburn, the round-the-houses time trials that commemorate the running of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix on a wartime airfield just outside the Darling Downs village.

Adding to the attractions, Seton’s favourite Bathurst Ford Capri will be part of the weekend’s celebrations.

“Captain Capri”, as he’s known, hopes to bring the car that he and his son Glenn shared in the 1983 Bathurst 1000. Bo hasn’t driven the Capri for several years, but says it’s the only one he has kept from the many he built and raced, because of its sentimental value.

This year Leyburn organisers are expecting entries from up to 225 classic, historic and performance cars on the track. The names of more special guests for the Legends Dinner are expected to be announced soon.

“Our Legends’ achievements will be already well known to the community of competitors and friends that has grown over 20 years of the Historic Leyburn,” Sprints Committee President Ann Collins said.

“Leyburn is proud to have an association that goes back to the earliest days of Sir Jack Brabham’s career. Although Sir Jack didn’t contest the Grand Prix he did race in a later event on the old airfield circuit and with his passing last year, it is very fitting to celebrate the cars and achievements of this great Australian.“ The inaugural Legends Dinner will provide welcome entertainment for the many competitors and supporters who camp every year and add to the Sprints’ special country atmosphere.

While on-track competition takes centre stage, off-track attractions will feature Shannon’s Show ‘n’ Shine and Vintage Caravans displays, both offering prizes for winners in several classes.

WATTS SMITH COMBO TOO GOOD BRETT Watts (Borneo Barracks GC) and Wes Smith (both better known for their football feats than golfing) teamed up to win the end of month medley 4BBB Stableford in Stanthorpe with a score of 48 points for their round. Brett played an anchor role in the round allowing Wes coming to the fore at the end to keep the scoring in tact.

The 23 points on the outward nine was bettered with 25 points on the homeward journey. One point back, with 47, was the team of Mark McCosker and club president and sponsor Stephen Kay) who took out the runner up prize.

Pin shots went to Dylan Barraclough at 3/12

and to Stephen Kay at 17. Matt Waterworth had his hands full after collecting the balls for propins at 1/10 and 9/18 as well as the birdies nest at 11. Mick O’Brien claimed the final pro-pin at 5/14. No ladies to take the pin at 3/12 but Hannah Reeves had best approach for the ladies at 17.

In the run down a ball each to Aaron Simmers and Bob Watts (46), Dylan Barraclough and Hannah Reeves (44) and Bruce Frizzell (Toogoolawah) and Jamie Purcell (Wallangarra).

One match play was completed on the weekend with Rob Reeves outlasting Darryl Boekholt to progress to the next round. A reminder to all players that round two Matchplay must be completed by 15 August.

This Saturday is the August Monthly Medal and putting competition sponsored by local business, Gino’s Floor Covering. Tee off from 11am and in the starter’s box are Trevor Ludlow and Ian Harvey. The club is still looking for more volunteers for the starter’s box. If you are unsure what this involves why not offer to assist on any Saturday.

Pistol comp success DOWN on the Inglewood range the two-day weekend pistol competition was another success with 23 entries in the Rimfire competition.

Tim Devine was successful in the Rimfire competition defeating Peter Russell and Stephanie Dudgeon.

Stephanie Dudgeon exacted some revenge to win the Centrefire from Tom Donald and Dan McCosker.

The Inglewood Sporting Shooters held their AGM last Sunday. Paul Drier was elected president and the remainder of the executive is Scott Johns (vice-president); Doug Redmond (secretary); Stephanie Dudgeon (treasurer); Tom Donald (publicity officer). Congratulations to those members.

The monthly meetings will be held on the fourth Sunday each month at 11.30 am.

This Sunday, the club has scheduled a pistol and clay shoot.

CHAMPION TAKES TITLE NO 10 CHAMPION hoop Damian Oliver notched up Victorian Metropolitan Jockey’s premiership no10 this week. Oliver, who is 43, came from behind suspended Dwayne Dunne to claim the milestone. The popular hoop whose career has been filled with highs and lows remains one of the most consistent riders in the country and despite some hiccups over the past 25 years, he is one of the most respected at his craft.

The win puts him just one premiership shy of the record held jointly by two former giants of the saddle, Roy Higgins and Billy Duncan. With premiership no10 in the bag, Olley’s thoughts now turn to the spring carnival where he has already secured some top rides. Between now and then, he will have a short break recharge and begin his assault on premiership no 11 and says it would be a “huge honour" to win another premiership and join Higgins and Duncan on 11 titles. Few would bet against him doing that before he hangs up his boots.

GREMLINS ROUND UP TIGERS THE Stanthorpe Gremlins have what looks to be an unbeatable grasp on the BRL minor premiership and are un-backable favourites to take out the premiership in 2015. Last weekend, they were dominant in their win over the second-placed Tenterfield Tigers, winning 34-14.

It was an impressive win by the home side that was without Jason Wilmot who was on representative duty with the Queensland Country side.

The Gremlins now have an eight-point buffer ahead of the Tigers. The remaining scheduled BRL game between Killarney and Wallangarra was cancelled when the Cutters forfeited. The Cutters last season’s premiers have had problems with player numbers all season and have been struggling to keep a side on the field in recent weeks. Captain coach John Trindall was another on representative duty which further reduced the number of available players. There are genuine concerns for the future of the BRL despite the fact that a couple of teams are flourishing.

The Tenterfield girls continued their undefeated march to the ladies league tag finals with a good win over the Gremlinettes.

Local Sport WATTLES ON TOP WATTLES moved to outright leaders of the TRL competition with their win over Dalby last Saturday but not before giving their supporters some anxious moments. The win came after the defending premiers took their foot off the gas at the back end of the game, allowing the Diehards to get within reach. . As the clock wound down to single figures, the premiers looked to have an unassailable 34-16 lead, but Dalby kicked into gear and mounted a late challenge scoring two late tries. In the end, it was a 36 -30 win to Wattles.In other games, Dalby were successful in Under 18s (72-8) and Reserve Grade (32-18). The Millmerran Rams continued on their winning way in the second division competition with another big win 62-4 over Dalby.

Although the A Grade win takes Wattles to the outright lead in the march to the finals, there is still little between the top three sides.

With only five of fixtures remaining, Wattles host Oakey this weekend in a game they would expect to win.

Arch Rivals the Gatton Hawks also have a home game in round 19. They play Dalby on Sunday.

Highfields who now sit in second spot will play Brothers at Glenholme Park on Saturday.

A REFUGE FROM TREES AND TRUMPETS THERE have been plenty of visitors in town over the last 10 days for the ever-growing Jumpers and Jazz Festival. There have been husbands and partners sneaking away from tree viewing and trumpets to take in some solace on the golf course and they brought with them some very positive comments on the condition and playability of Warwick golf course.

Friday’s Red Rooster Rumble nine hole competition attracted 27 players with a few shooting under their handicaps. One in particular was so hungry for a win he had to shoot one under off the stick to take the pro shop trophy. Congratulations to Geoff Hinze on a great round. It included a three; a five on the par five second hole, (yes that’s five stableford points). Hinze carded 23 points ahead of runner-up Bob Lester with 22 on a countback from Neville Heard. Also figuring in the run down were Dale Derrick 21, and Shaun Morrison 21. Sponsors Red Roosters provided hot chicken vouchers for nearest to the pin shots and these were won by Shaun Morrison (5), Pieter Kantors (Tewantin) (7) and James Olsen (9).

A total of 49 players lined-up in last Saturday’s single stableford event sponsored by B&K Motors - three finished with 40 points. Anthony Austin (one of the club’s new members) won on a countback from Peter Millard (runner-up) and Ben Hollis (just a run down ball for 64 off the

stick to this plus one marker).

Balls also went to Jesse Harris (39), Brendon Jones (38), Peter Boney and Lennie Williams (37) and Phil Economidis (36). Nearest to the pins were Keith Farrell (5 and 9); Rupert Smith (7), Mark Thomas (11), Greg Sellick (13), and Jesse Harris (16).

The August Monthly Medal will be played this weekend and Warwick Real Estate is the event sponsor.

The annual Holden Scramble held at the Warwick Golf Club is not far off - Sunday 23 August. There is still time to get your magnificent four together and participate in this national four ball Ambrose event. It could be your team that progress to the regional and national finals. Cost is $36pp and each team must have at least two members from Warwick Golf Club.

H AND H WINNERS IT was a win for the H and H’s at Wallangarra last weekend. Steven Hampstead and Michael Hurtz combined nicely to clinch the narrowest of wins over Kevin and Scott Williams in the ‘Garra’s Two Ball Ambrose on Saturday. Tony Murphy and Andrew Thompson played well for third place.

Hurtz grabbed a pin shot on three and Thompson landed one close to take the ninth.

This Saturday, it’ll is 1 August, so it is the Monthly Medal and Putting competition. Note that on Sunday 23 August, the club will be hosting a two ball Ambrose sponsored by Golf World.

This is an early reminder for everyone to clear the in your diaries. More information will be available closer to the event.

GOOD RESULTS FOR COWBOYS IT was a winning weekend for the Warwick Cowboys with wins over Souths in all three grades.

The A grade team capped off a great day for the Warwick visitors with a 44-30 win. The win moves the Cowboys to just one win out of the top five. Captain coach Matt Gainey scored two tries but was most impressed with the performance of two of the Under 18 players who stepped up to play their first A grade game. Both Harry Sullivan and Sean Perrin debuted for the A grade side who have been hit with a long injury list.

In Reserve Grade, the Cowboys had a 44-8 win and the Under 18s dominated their opposition keeping them scoreless. Final scores in this game 44-0.

This weekend, the Cowboys host Valleys at Fr Ranger Oval with the main game set to kick off at 6.10pm. With just five rounds left to play, the

Cowboys will be pushing for another A grade win in a bid to forced their way into the top five.

STILL SOME BEANIES AND SCARVES AT Association Croquet this week, Joy Newman and Andrea Denkewitz teamed up to play Heather Widderick and Pat Schnoor. Widderick and Schnoor won the game 26 - 18. Pat Schnoor scored breaks of two and six. Margaret Dickenson and Effey Russel played Grace Howard and Val Richardson in what was a very entertaining game. The result was a tough hard fought draw with both teams finishing locked at 15-all.

Conditions were a little better for Hoop runners this week - no snow at least (or unfortunately) but still enough of a chill for there to be plenty of scarves and beanies about and two groups braved the conditions to play doubles.

In the first group, Liz Ellway was in great form, top scoring with eight hoops and a great ricochet. Bill Golding was again on the mark with his trade mark jump shot. The final score a close 13-12. In the second team, Shirley Page top scored with seven hoops. Elaine Brown nailed a hole in one among the six hoops she scored. The score at the end of the game 13 - 10.

After the break, teams swapped and played another game. In the first team Judy Lock top scored with seven hoops. In the second team, Bill Golding once again featured, top scoring with six hoops including another of those trade mark jump shots.

Anyone wishing to come and try is invited to come along to the Saturday games. It is an ideal time for new players to get one on one instruction and get to know a little about the sport. If you are interested, contact Elaine on 0401 630 272.

SPORTERS BACK LANDMARK held their annual Golf Day last Sunday, and for those Sporters players who were not involved - a sleep in was the order of the day.

Sporters are back in action this weekend with tee off at the normal time 8am-8.30am.

BORDER RUGBY LEAGUE PLAYERS on TI BRL players Jason Wilmot and John Trindall joined team mates from across Outback Queensland last week to play in the Queensland Country match against the Remote Northern Islands team on Thursday Island. Wilmot and Trindall were selected in the side following the success of South West Country in the Outback Muster held in Mt Isa recently.

In a tight game, the Queensland Outback side notched up back-to-back wins in the competition 32-30. The 2014 team was also successful. In a fine performance, Wilmot kicked five from five attempts. Reports from the coach of the side are that both Wilmot and Trindall did the BRL proud.

Wilmot also set up a couple of tries while Trindall

was very strong coming off the bench.

The highlight for both players was as much the entire experience as pulling on a Queensland jersey. For Trindall, the opportunity to visit TI communities and be involved in coaching clinics with young Indigenous kids is something, he says, he will never forget. Premierships aside, Trindall says this has been the highlight of his football career. The pair this weekend return to their club games.

It was lovely seeing our bowlers and social players dressing for the occasion with Noel Fletcher and Karina Devine taking out the best dressed man and lady prizes.
