Land in limbo THE future direction of Table Top and Splitters Creek remains up in the air after Albury Council voted to defer a decision on the area’s Rural Land Strategy in the face of growing public concern.

Following a nine-month community consultation process, AlburyCity received 35 submissions regarding the

draft Rural Lands Strategy from the general public government agencies.

The draft strategy currently proposes minimum lot sizes of two, four, or eight hectares in various zones around Splitters Creek.

This is a sizeable drop compared to the current minimum lot size of 40 hectares or 80 hectares, depending on the location of the property.

AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack said the recommendations reflected the changing nature of Albury’s rural areas and the increased demand for rural residential and lifestyle living.

The land was formerly part of Greater Hume Shire before boundary changes in 2004 placed the land under AlburyCity.

Councillor David Thurley moved at

the meeting to defer the Splitters Creek vote until August to allow councillors more time to consider the large volume of feedback received with the report.

“Overall, the strategy for Table Top is really big, and we need to carefully check the information,” he told council.

“I believe it would be best if councillors could receive further briefing

and advice on this matter.”

Cr Thurley’s concerns were echoed by fellow councillor Darren Cameron.

“There are some very interesting nuances in regards to Splitters Creek and are ones this council inherited through forced amalgamations,” he said.

“It’s a big (report) for councillors to get their head around in four days.”

Bill aims to boost zones

By ERIN SOMERVILLE GREENS NSW spokeswoman for the Status of Women Mehreen Faruqi says she is looking forward to fighting for exclusion zones to be placed around women’s health clinics.

Dr Faruqi’s abortion law reform Bill that aims to remove abortion from the Crimes Act will be put before State Parliament this term and will include a key focus on exclusion zones.

The Greens MP has worked closely with Albury’s Rights to Privacy Group to push for exclusion zones to be created around women’s health centres and abortion clinics and would see anti-abortion activists removed from the immediate vicinity.

vited by Rights to Privacy to speak at January’s medical privacy forum in Albury, said the creation of an exclusion zone could help diffuse bubbling tension between anti-abortion protestors and members of the public after a HOGPI demonstrator was punched outside the Englehardt Street clinic this month.

“What is happening in Albury is deeply concerning,” she said.

“It is a prime example of what happens when the law is not clear.

“I have been to Albury and heard first hand, how intimidated some women feel when trying to enter the Fertility Control Clinic on Englehardt Street.

“Regional women are indisputably disadvantaged when it comes to accessibility and affordability of abortion services.”

Demystifying Islam and Muslims

Group president Yakub Mohammed said they made the decision to combine their annual end of Ramadan with an open day to demystify Islam and Muslims.

In step with same sex

By ERIN SOMERVILLE WATCHING a newly-wed bride and her bridesmaid walk out of St Matthew’s Church to join the marriage equality fight proved to be an emotional moment during the weekend’s Rainbow Walk.

The community’s first cross-Border march for marriage equality saw up to 160 residents cross the Lincoln Causeway to lobby for Federal Farrer MP Sussan Ley’s support. Around 110 signatures were gathered by Rainbow Walk facilitators Hume Phoenix, and are expected be presented to Ms Ley’s office later this week.

For Hume Phoenix Female convenor and Farrer representative for Marriage Equality Toni Johnson, the push for marriage equality is about more than gaining rights for her and her same-sex partner of 12 years.

“I have a daughter in a same-sex relationship, and I’d like her to have the same opportunities as her siblings,” said Ms Johnson, who is heartbroken to see her child continue to miss out on equal rights.

“That’s what my fight’s about, I fight for her.”

Many who marched as part of Hume Phoenix were flanked by family and friends in support.

Across the road from Ms Ley’s Kiewa Street office, St Matthew’s Archdeacon Peter MacLeodMiller finished a local wedding by flying the rainbow pride flag high on the church’s flagpole and ringing the tower bells for equality.

Ms Johnson said the support from a cross-section of the community was meaningful.

“When he and the bride came over and showed their support it was really emotional.”

Meanwhile, Hume Phoenix is eager to see a same-sex marriage bill tabled in parliament this year with Ms Ley’s support. The comments come after it was announced Labor MPs and senators will not be bound to vote for same-sex marriage until 2019 following the weekend’s ALP national conference. Ms Ley confirmed in early July that she had not yet decided whether she would support marriage equality and called for Liberal MPs to be allowed a conscious vote on the matter.

“I think really for her to support us would go in history,” Ms Johnson said.

“People will remember her for that.”

Funds drive growth

Sled teams to hit the snow slopes

By ERIN SOMERVILLE THOMAS Mitchell Drive will receive $1.71 million worth of upgrades to improve safety on the busy road.

The project will stretch from the Chapple Street roundabout to Docking Street intersection, and will see the construction of formal intersections and right turn lanes at the numerous service roads that branch onto Thomas Mitchell Drive. Funds will also create a central median, kerbing, pavement, lighting, road marking, a bus stop, and pedestrian crossings.

The move comes after the road was identified as a black spot in Indi following a fatal accident near the Docking Street intersection and two crashes that resulted in injury on the road between 2008 and 2013.

Liberal candidate for Indi Sophie Mirabella joined the Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Jamie Briggs on Thursday morning to make the announcement as part of the launch of the Federal Government’s $39.1 million Black Spot Program across Victoria.

The upgrades are expected to benefit the 8700 motorists who use the road daily.

Wodonga Council predicts it will throw in around $500,000 of its 2015/16 $800,000 Federal Roads to Recovery budget to complete an extra 300m of the project up to Wigg Street.

“These projects lift productivity, they improve safety, they ensure our road networks are as good and productive as we want them to be”, Mr Briggs said.

just about big centre point projects in our cities or in our regions, they’re also about improving the regional links to ensure we can take advantage of the great growth across our region.”

Mr Briggs told media that Ms Mirabella had been vocal in securing funds for Wodonga and Indi.

“To actually put those dollars up is terrific to see,” Ms Mirabella said.

WINTER sports are in full swing at Mount Buller, and it’s not just humans who can play.

The Victorian ski resort is gearing up to play host to a brand new event on the snow season calendar with the Mt Buller Sled Dog Quest.

The two-day event that kicks off on Tuesday is expected to bring up to 30 sled dog teams from across Australia to compete across two challenging courses.

A course has been designed for two and four dog teams, while a longer course has been created for six and eight dog teams.

Held at twilight, teams will begin from the heart of the Village, heading up the Bourke Street ski run and around a course that weaves around the ski area.

Day two will see the six and eight dog teams assemble in the Corn Hill area where they will follow a course along the picturesque trail towards Mt Stirling.

Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management chief executive officer John Huber is looking forward to fun and thrilling event.

“We are very excited to welcome the Mt Buller Sled Dog Quest and all the participants to our calendar of events in 2015,“ he said.

“The race will offer a fun and diverse experience for competitors and spectators alike.“ The event follows the popularity of the Australian Sled Dogs Tours that began operating at Mt Buller in 2014.

Migrants’ memories jogged by ripper roast KITCHENHAND Jurgen Weber returned to Bonegilla at the weekend to serve up food similar to what he and his family ate when they first arrived in Australia almost 50 years ago.

The Bonegilla Migrant Experience hosted its first Sunday Roasts event on Sunday, celebrating a traditional Australian meal and learning about what migrants staying at the centre first thought of the menu.

Mr Weber, whose family migrated from Germany in 1969 when he was just three, helped cater for the event as a kitchenhand with Redback Mobile Barbecue.

Although having little memory of his time at the site, Mr Weber said he had heard a lot about the Bonegilla Migrant Training and Reception Centre through his family, including about the food.

“My sister remembers the food quite well and said there was lots of porridge and the meat was never cooked properly,” he said.

“But it is a special place for us and my mother has bought one of the plaques out there on the Tribute Wall.”

The Sunday Roasts event include a guided tour, and live entertainment will be provided by Border musician Peter Cominos.

The next one will be held on 30 August.

Cost, including lunch and dessert, is $30 for adults and $20 for children under 12.

TAFE skills come as a relief YOUNG Riverina students are being offered the chance to study for free as part of a new TAFE initiative.

Fee-Free Scholarships at TAFE NSW Riverina Institute are being rolled out as part of a state-wide initiative designed to arm young people with the skills they need for the jobs of the future.

Caitlin McLean, who is currently studying Certificate III in Business at Griffith Campus, is one student who had her course fees waived under the initiative.

“The Fee-Free Scholarship allows young people like me to further my training, to better my chances at getting a job,” she said.

“Without the financial support that the scholarship has provided, I would have had to think twice about enrolling in my course.”

The move has been welcomed by relieving TAFE NSW Riverina Institute director Terri Connellan, citing the pressure and demands placed on young workers.

“There is an increasing

amount of pressure on our young workforce to keep up with the growing demands of the modern workplace,” he said.

“Initiatives like Fee-Free Scholarships provide an opportunity for many students to get a foothold in the VET system and develop the skills they need, for the jobs they want.”

To be eligible for one of the 50,000 Fee-Free Scholarships available in 2015/16, students must be eligible for a concession under Smart and Skilled criteria.

Examples of students likely to benefit are Commonwealth Welfare recipients or their dependants as well as students with a disability starting a second qualification in a calendar year.

Young people who meet the eligibility criteria and are in, or on the waiting list for, NSW Social Housing, will be given priority and guaranteed a scholarship to start training.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE IN 1927, Albury garage proprietor Mr H.J. Beith broke an Australian record driving from Sydney to Melbourne solo.

Covering the 576 miles in a 1926 Chrysler he picked up a prize of just 80 pounds from an insurance company.

Mr Beith drove into the pages of Australian motoring history by covering the distance in 11 hours and 14 minutes - over 40 minutes faster than the thenstanding record.

It was also the first time the journey had been made solo.

The moment has been recognised by petroleum giant Mobil Oil Australia as the company celebrates its 120th an-

niversary, and is looking for more great motoring stories from the Border region to include in a commemorative book titled “Then, Now and Tomorrow”.

Members of the public are invited to send in or share anecdotes, articles, and imagery of transportation, mining, manufacturing, and agriculture that reflect the earlier days of a growing nation.

“We want to celebrate our 120-year journey by involving our local communities. They have helped us to grow, and have been growing along with us throughout the years,” Mobil’s Australian retail sales manager Kim MacMillan said.

“Submissions could be anything from capturing the colour of a local sponsor-

ship or worthy community project in their township, a historic photo of a family member who worked at one of our refineries, or even the development of a community as its manufacturing capabilities grew - you just never know what gems are out there.”

The finished book will be gifted to local libraries and schools for educational use.

The local club is among five in the running to be named CrownBet Country Racing Victoria Club of the Year. It is up against Racing Clubs in Ballarat, Kilmore, Kyneton and Hanging Rock, and Pakenham.

Judges will be casting their votes based

on criteria such as attendance, community involvement, and delivering a top-quality race-day experience.

The nomination comes after the Border city was given a tick of approval last year for a Wodonga Gold Cup public holiday for up until 2016. It’s inaugural public holiday race meet in November 2014 drew in a record crowd of around 5000.

The winner will be announced at the CrownBet 2014/15 Country Racing Vic-

toria Awards at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday 29 August, and will receive a $20,000 Country Racing Victoria funding grant.

Country Racing Victoria chief executive Scott Whiteman congratulated Wodonga and the other finalists clubs on their efforts.

“It was a difficult task to narrow the field to five finalists after such a successful country racing season,” he said.

THE Border is making its mark on the tourist map with the number of domestic overnight visitors hitting a five-year high.

Latest figures show Albury Wodonga housed 1,368,000 overnight visitors in 2014, raking in 18 per cent more compared to the previous year and injecting over $209 million into the local economy.

The report shows Albury Wodonga’s typical 2014 overnight visitor would be visiting the region from Melbourne between October and December for holiday or leisure purposes, is over the age of 55, and staying for an average of two nights at a friend’s or relative’s home.

The data is a highlight of the inaugural joint tourism report between Wodonga Council and AlburyCity, which complements the cities’ new destination brand.

Cr Rodney Wangman said the 2014 Albury Wodonga Visitor Economy Trends report supported the push for the recently unveiled Albury-Wodonga

destination brand, which aims to celebrate a range of diverse experiences across outdoor and urban cultures in one unique destination, side by side.

“This report plays a crucial role in understanding the economic benefit of tourism to Albury-Wodonga, as well as allowing us to understand the type of visitors and their purpose for visiting our cities,” he said.

AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack said the data presented in the report was representative of the Border’s strong tourism offerings as a twin city, and was an encouraging indicator for the future.

“This knowledge not only helps us to direct future strategy, but it also assists potential investors to have a greater understanding of the market demand for tourism in our region,” he said.

Meanwhile the region saw less international visitors in 2014 with 15,365 stopping in, compared to 19,535 in 2013. International guests stayed for an average 5.8 nights per trip.

Council backs race break

By ERIN SOMERVILLE ALBURY Council has given the nod to supporting a half day holiday for the 2016 and 2017 Albury Gold Cup. Councillors voted on the issue at Monday night’s ordinary council meeting, and will now prepare an application to be lodged with the Department of Industrial Relations.

The yes vote comes after council teamed up with Albury Northside Chamber of Commence to seek consultation with the business community.

Within 24 hours of the business feedback process being launched last week, around three-quarters of local responding business had voted in support of a half day public holiday.

“This would not only allow an appplication for a local public holiday to be lodged for a two-year period, but also confirm council’s committment to the event and strengthen it as a major event on Albury’s calendar."

Green thumbs hit pay dirt OVER 300 pairs of young, local hands have hit the dirt for a good cause.

Students across the Border joined in on Planet Ark’s National Schools Planting Day, helping make the area a greener and more environmentally-friendly place for both humans and native fauna alike.

The event that continued over the weekend allowed local schools to help make a positive contribution to the Border environment by planting around 6000 native trees, shrubs, and grasses.

The planting took place in Apex Park, home to the threatened squirrel glider, as well as Nagle Gums Estate in Springdale Heights and at Corry’s Woodland Reserve in Thurgoona. Albury mayor Kevin Mack said the planting helped form part of a five-year revegetation project as the council gears up to plant more than 27,000 this winter.

“The tree planting and several nest boxes that have been put up will help the squirrel gliders and other native animals,” he said.

Armed robbery charges laid WODONGA Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged two men following an alleged armed robbery at a KFC restaurant in Wodonga on Sunday night.

It is alleged the incident took place at the Elgin Street fast food restaurant about 7.25pm.

The pair has both been charged with two counts of armed robbery.

Peter Warren Whyte, aged 30, and 42-year-old Jamie Philip Smith faced an out-of-sessions court hearing at Wodonga police station.

Both men, of no fixed address, faced Wodonga Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Grants stall brain drain

By ERIN SOMERVILLE YOUNG professionals are being offered incentives to stay on the Border through the help of a newly launched grant.

Border Trust and Albury Northside Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to announce the inaugural ‘Good for Business l Good for Community Young Business Leader’ grant to encourage emerging young business leaders to continue to live, work or study in the region.

The grants are aimed to help emerging leaders develop their skill sets through a variety of measures, from workplace training, mentoring, leadership programs, education, and other needs young people in business may have to get ahead.

With around 60 per cent of young regional professionals moving to the city, the local business sector has highlighted the need to continue attracting young workers.

“What we’d like to do is keep our young people local, but if they do choose to go and work in the cities make sure they do come back for their next step in their lives,” Albury Northside Chamber of Commerce manager Kathie Heyman said.

Organisers are open to hearing different and unique ideas from applicants on how the grant money can be put to use

“We recognise we have a fantastic pool of young professional and emerging leaders in the region who may need just a small hand-up to help them take their professional life or studies to the next level,” Ms Heyman said.

The grant comes after the Chamber and Border Trust, which receives regular requests to provide donations, wanted a way to direct their donations towards a specific area of identified need in the local community.

To kickstart the program, the 2015 Corporate Challenge will raise funds to support projects focusing on young business leaders.

This will also see $10 of new chamber members’ fees directed to the Border Trust to help fund the grants. All money will stay in the local community.

To be eligible for consideration of a Good for Business l Good for Community grant, applicants must reside in Albury Wodonga, be aged between 1835 years old, and are welcome from young business professionals or third and fourth year university and TAFE students.

The maximum amount for an individual grant is $2000.

THE Border Relay for Life has named Alexandra Park as its new home for this year’s charity event.

The popular Cancer Council event was officially launched on Saturday in both Albury and Wodonga, with organisers eager to make the most of the new venue.

“This is new for us, and at a bigger ground,” Relay for Life logistics and launch co-ordinator Fleur Barlow said.

“There is more parking, easier access, logistically it’s safer, and there are not as many residents nearby.”

Relay For Life is a popular fund-raising event on the Border in which teams relay overnight to help raise funds for the Cancer Council. Last year, it raised over $400,000 to help support local cancer causes such as Hilltop, as well as research.

With the larger venue now lined up for the event, organisers are hoping to see more impressive figures raised for the cause.

“There is a line to how big we can get the event, but it’s always amazing to hear and reach those tallies and massive figures.

“We want to make enough money to make a difference.”

The Relay for Life funds are spent on causes and programs identified by the local Cancer Council to help benefit a large cross-section of the local community.

While the event is three months away, residents are being urged to start getting their

“It’s a fun way to look at raising money, it’s about bringing the community together as well.”

It’s the age-old question that is starting to plague local teenagers, and with so many career options now available to young people, a little direction can go a long way.

Wednesday’s Trade Career Day has brought students from 25 local schools to Wodonga Senior Secondary College’s Trade Careers Hub Training Centre to interact with a range of TAFE colleges, career pro-

viders, and industry stakeholders.

From hospitality and viticulture, to spray and panel and Defence Force, the sky is the limit for the Border’s youth.

The interaction with industry is also expected help the students gain more direction with their future schooling.

“We’ve got to make subject choices and it will help us find out what we have to do,” Xavier High School student Emily Walton said.

The event is also beneficial for industry members to gain

exposure both with the youth as well as fellow industry members.

“It’s beneficial for us in that we can talk to a really large number of people that come to our stand showing interest,” Defence Force Warrant Officer Danny McInnes said.

“It offers the chance to have a one on one discussion about their future.”

The event has been running for three years, and continues to be rewarding for both students and industry providers.

MAMA has been bold in choosing an Aboriginal art exhibition as its opening show, according to one of Australia’s leading Aboriginal artists.

Award-winning Sydneybased Aboriginal artist Jonathan Jones said MAMA would “lead the way” by opening with the exhibition ‘Wiradjuri Ngurambanggu: from Country comes story’.

“In launching this exhibition, MAMA is going to challenge what people think Aboriginal art is,” Mr Jones, a member of the Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi nations of NSW, said.

“It’s risky I guess, but it has been very encouraging to see such support for Wiradjuri culture and for the gallery to be working with the local community.”

Mr Jones, who has exhibited internationally and was recently commissioned to contribute to a $40m public art project in Sydney, said MAMA was setting the agenda rather than “following the popular idea of what art should be”.

“Art doesn’t have to be produced elsewhere because we have something really important and special right here in our own backyard,” he said.

“Hopefully, a lot of people will come and learn something different or see a different story and connect to it.”

making and drawing to sculpture and film, and tries to connect people, histories and places through art.

“There are two ideas of culture Aboriginal and nonAboriginal culture, but there is an overlap even if people don’t admit it,” he said.

“Aboriginal culture is always seen as the “other” and not part of the mainstream. I’m interested in how Aboriginal

culture is an important part of Australia.”

Wiradjuri leader Darren Wighton also praised the move and said it was important to recognise Aboriginal culture locally.

MAMA curator Bianca Acimovic said the opening exhibition would be an opportunity to epitomise the unique, Australia, and exciting vision of the new gallery.

WHEN we told people we were driving a Honda HR-V, the almost universal response was, “Er, yuk.”

When we reminded them that it wasn’t the tragically un-hip three-door breadvan thing of years back, but was instead a well-sorted, betterlooking mini-SUV, the response changed. Suddenly there was interest.

Has Honda got a car other than the CR-V the world will want to own?

The HR-V range stretches from the $24,990 VTi, via the $27,990 VTi-S through to the $32,990 VTi-L. Our test car, the VTi, came equipped with climate control, fabric trim, plastic steering wheel, seven-inch touchscreen six-speaker stereo with USB and Bluetooth, reversing camera, keyless entry, hill holder, power windows all round, power mirrors and tyre pressure sensors.

The HR-V is much improved from the ungainly first generation last sold here nearly fifteen years ago.

It looks like a cross between the new Honda Civic and CRV, which means upright styling and a few extravagant surfacing details that may not quite work for some eyes.

The CR-V-alike daylight opening in profile looks okay, but instead of a window in the third space, there’s a too-highfor kids door handle.

The 16-inch alloys on the base model look right, holding a bit of faux off-road cred.

There’s a whole world inside, though.

The inside of the HR-V is by far the best of the crop of new, titchy SUVs. The three-dial dash is a clean design and the most is made of the tall console, with a split level arrangement giving an extra bin to hide the USB, HDMI and power ports. THE ability to change a flat tyre is a skill every motorist should have.

Having a spare tyre that’s in good condition and knowing where to locate a car’s jack is a good start.

First of all, the wheel nuts should be loosened while the tyre is still on the ground.

Then once the car has been raised by the jack, the spare tyre should be put under the axle of the affected wheel.

Once the flat tyre has been taken off the spare can be quickly removed from underneath the axle and the flat tyre can be put in its place.

The spare tyre can then be safely put on. Care should be taken not to over-tighten wheel nuts.

Global Civic hits refresh button

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY HONDA Civic has a long and distinguished history in Australia.

It has been on sale here continuously since 1973 and has grown from a tiny two-door 1.2-litre sedan which revolutionised the design of small cars in Australia through nine generations into one of the classiest and most respected small-medium cars on our local market.

A truly global vehicle, the Civic hatch is manufactured in Britain and was developed with extensive testing throughout Europe. Its sedan sibling is built in Thailand.

That ninth generation Civic has been on sale here since February 2012 and had its refresh button tapped earlier this year with some minor design tweaks, new safety technology and infotainment improvements.

Already a good looking car, the 2015 changes have made the Civic even more eye-catching.

There’s a new front grille with cross-hatch fill, new front and rear bumpers, side mouldings and rear spoiler together with new standard guided tube daytime running lights and guided tube tail lights.

New grille design further enhances Honda Civic hatch’s eye-catching looks. for the automatic VTi-LN. Interior space in the Civic hatchback is fine for four adults, with space in the centre-rear for another without too much discomfort.

Despite the sleek appearance headroom is fine.

Soft-touch surface materials are used throughout to provide a quality feel, the steering wheel has tilt and telescopic adjustment and, in the VTiL, is finished in extra-smooth leather with stitching.

We liked the complex double-decker styling of the dash and instrument area, with the digital speedo sitting high to make it easy to keep track of.

The boot is large and deep, the latter helped by the use of a space-saver spare beneath the floor.

Capacity is 390 litres, extending to 1120 litres with the rear seatback folded and loaded to the window line.

Luggage is reasonably easy to load through an opening that’s wide and practical.

Both Civic hatch variants come with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC petrol engine producing 104 kW of power at 6500 rpm and 174 Nm of torque at 4300 rpm.

Civic VTi-S is available with either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission, while the VTi-L and VTi-N are five-speed auto only.

New for the 2015 Civic hatch is an enhanced safety technology called Agile Handling Assist System (AHAS) that combines with the car’s stability control system to improve stability and

performance during cornering.

Front and rear parking sensors are now standard in the Civic VTi-L and VTi-LN models, but are an option in the VTi-S. Other standard features include seven airbags, ABS brakes with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution, vehicle stability assist with traction control, low tyre pressure warning system, and Honda G-force Control (G-Con) technology which reduces the of G-forces on occupants in the event of collision.

As before our only serious gripe is the restricted rear vision caused by the positioning of the small rear spoiler across the window.

There is a positive side, though, in that the brake lights are positioned on

either side and below the spoiler making them highly visible to following vehicles.

New for 2015 is Display Audio System which combines Bluetooth connectivity, audio streaming, mirroring functionality and display of the reversing camera and sat nav (only in the VTi-LN).

Disappointingly, the volume controls on the screen are tiny up-anddown buttons rather than the normal circular knob, a feature that is not only inconvenient but potentially dangerous because of the distraction needed to make adjustments. Fortunately there are steering wheels mounted controls.

Handling in the Civic hatch is quite sharp and it turns in neatly and positively. Steering is direct and well weighted, offering good road feedback.

Ride comfort is good as Honda has increased suspension travel and worked on recalibrating bushing compliance so they are more suited to rough and ready Australian country roads.

Fuel consumption during our test period was 7.1 litres per 100 km in Econ mode, within the ballpark of the listed 6.5 L/100 km.

Honda Civic hatch is a stylish, well-built and highly reputable smallto-medium car with an excellent ninegeneration heritage.

It’s grown sufficiently over the years to the stage where it can be used as a family car by those downsizing from a traditional large family car.

Revved up for bike releases THE first half of the year gone and only one month of winter to go, the year is flying by.

What an exciting first half it’s been in the motorcycle world, with a whole bunch of exciting new models of bikes having been released onto the Australian market.

Still, there is the promise of more to come with Suzuki’s exciting new GSX-S1000 and GSX-S1000F models due on the showroom floor very shortly.

Aimed at the experienced middle aged rider with a power

plant based of the long stroke GSXR 1000 motor with updated electronics and motor modifications to give even more grunt, these two bikes promise to put some excitement into the naked and street sports market.

The release of these models also coincides with some important milestones in Suzuki’s history with 2015 being the 10th anniversary of the GSXR 1000K5, the 30th anniversary of the GSXR-750 and the 35th anniversary of the GSX range where the 16 valve motor began

for Suzuki.

It also marks the return of Suzuki to Moto GP and, I must say, while still having a way to go, I have been surprised by their competiveness from the start.

Locally, the Albury-Wodonga Motorcycle Club has just hosted a round of the Victorian senior moto cross championships at the Lincoln Causeway complex, and, despite the weather throwing up its challenges, they always run a top event there.

Adam, Amber in combo

By TANIA PHILLIPS ADAM Harvey is on his way to the Commercial Club early next month but he’s bringing with him a pretty impressive guest.

Amber Lawrence is an award winning singer/songwriter in her own right she’s just been awarded the prestigious ‘Female Artist of the Year’ award, at the 2015 CMAA Golden Guitar awards.

Taking out ‘Female Artist of the Year’ is no mean feat, especially considering the calibre of her fellow nominees, who included Kasey Chambers and Lyn Bowtel.

Amber’s recent success comes off the back of the launch of her fourth album “Superheroes”. Superhero debuted at number three on the ARIA Country Charts and was launched to a sold out crowd at Sydney’s iconic venue ‘The Basement’ in September 2014.

Superheroes include the hit singles ‘Superhero’ and ‘The Lifesaver’ (which was also awarded Contemporary Lyric of the Year at the 2015 Bush Laureate Awards). Selling out shows and converting people to her style of country music is nothing new for this Sydney city girl and former Qantas accountant.

road and working hard for the past nine years.

In 2012, Amber launched ‘3’ her third album, loved by fans and critics alike, to a sold out Tamworth Capitol Theatre Audience. The second single from ‘3’ - ‘The Man Across The Street” saw Amber become a 2013 finalist for the Country Music Awards of Australia - ‘The Golden Guitars’ for Female Artist of the Year, plus a finalist in the 2013 Bush Laureate Awards.

And also saw her invited to perform for Australia’s Defence Force personnel in the Middle East, and perform the song in front of 40,000 people at them Anzac Day Football Match.

Amber has released 15 singles over the course of her career to date that have either reached #1or Top 5 on the Country Music Radio Chart and the CMC Video charts.

She is the recipient of no less than 12 country music awards, eight Golden Guitar nominations and two APRA nominations.

AHHH ... .Ryan Reynolds and Ben Kingsley. So much potential, what happened?

Ben Kingsley slaps on a thick New York accent to portray dying billionaire Damian Hale who isn’t quite done with life. Throw in a crazy medical machine which looks as effective as a clothes dryer, a testtube grown body, and hey presto, billionaire gets a new lease of life in the skin of Ryan Reynolds. It is a great deal for both Kingsley and anyone who has come to see the film for some eye-candy.

Sent into the world as the newly christened Edward, the billionaire enjoys the perks of re-exploring youth while battling some seriously realistic

hallucinations with a concoction of anti-rejection pills delegated weekly from a mystery company. After missing a pill, the hallucinations become even more intense and Edward decides to track down his visions.

It’s here he learns that his new body was actually harvested from a husband and father. Set into motion the action-packed sequences.

There are car chase scenes, gun fights, running and puffing, and fire- lots of fire. In fact, the flamethrower seems to be the weapon of choice in this film.

Odd, but just go with it. Edward fights to outrun the mystery medical company that’s desperate to keep its secret under wraps, and fights to get hold of the anti-rejection pills keeping him alive in the young man’s body.

Look, the idea was there, but

it just didn’t quite make it on screen. Tension failed to build effectively, the characters felt flat, and the heart-string pulling attempt just never quite found its way.

Reynolds was completely mis-cast as the former hardass billionaire and turned into a puppy-faced assassin fighting desperately to keep some stranger’s kid and wife alive.

Ironic when as a dying, old man he didn’t even speak to his own daughter. Reynolds holds his own in the fight scenes, but is just too damn decent to pull off the whole personality switch from the steely Kingsley.

It’s what this movie isn’t that’s the disappointment, but if you fancy some sci-fi, Freaky Friday-ish, smack’emup fun, you can’t go wrong with Self/ less.

Betty’s Place helps provide crisis accommodation for women who are escaping family violence, or have been made homeless. Many show up to Betty’s Place with children, and often

While funds from the evening are still being tallied, Border Association of House Medical Officers team member Alexandra Para said the evening was a hit for the 70-odd guests who attended.

Lavington makes its move

By TANIA PHILLIPS SECOND-PLACED Lavington showed they will be a team to reckon with come finals time with a 33-point victory over fifth-placed North Albury in round 15 Ovens and Murray action at Panthers Oval on Saturday.

The Panthers led by 10 at the first break and slowly but surely increased their margin, kicking eight goals in the second half after a low-scoring first half to finally take the points 10.10 (70) to 5.7 (37).

Best-on-ground Myles Aalbers kicked two for the game along with Tom Hargreaves while Justin Koschitzke took his total for the year to an impressive 38 with three goals.

Albury Tiger’s dynamic duo Setanta O’hAilpin and Brayden O’Hara continued their goal-kicking spree as the competition leaders recorded an 83-point win over Wodonga Raiders at Albury Sportsground.

O’hAilpin kicked five (44 for the year) and O’Hara four (47) as Albury kept their unbeaten run alive winning 20.15 (135) to 7.10 (52).

In other round 14 matches, Wodonga defeated Corowa-Rutherglen 14.10 (94) to 5.8 (38) and Wangaratta beat Wangaratta Rovers 18.11 (119) to 8.4 (52).

Round 15 action (home team first) will see Albury take on Wodonga, Wangaratta play Yarrawonga, Wondonga Raiders play Lavington, North Albury face Wangaratta Rovers and Mytleford host Corowa-Rutherglen.
