‘Human wreckage’ “YOUR past has caught up with you,” Judge Michael Tinney told former Puffing Billy volunteer Robert Kingsley Whitehead at the Victorian County Court on Friday.

“Six victims came into your domain with a common interest in railways,” Judge Tinney said.

“These boys would have looked up to you and been impressed. You used this interest to sexually abuse children.”

These were the words Judge Tinney spoke as he sentenced Whitehead to more than eight years in prison for 24 charges of sexual abuse against six boys.

“You were trusted with the children,” Judge Tinney said, while also describing Whitehead’s actions as “largely not opportunistic, with clear pre-planning”.

There were no submissions in relation to Whitehead showing any genuine remorse and Judge Tinney said he “was not surprised” by this.

Judge Tinney noted there had been a significant breach of trust that factored into the length of the prison sentence.

Counsel for Whitehead did not dispute or take issue with the victim impact statements supplied to the court.

Judge Tinney described the details in the victim impact statements as

“sobering listening and reading” that included sentiments towards Whitehead’s actions such as “ruining young boy’s hobbies,” and “impossible to forget”.

Whitehead’s victims described in their impact statements still having nightmares and flashbacks of the abuse, being made to feel like a liar when they were not believed, impacting every aspect of their lives and feeling completely ashamed of what had happened.

When taking mitigating factors, such as Whitehead’s age and poor state of health, into consideration for the length of the prison sentence, Judge Tinney said: “It is not unusual for old-

er men to be imprisoned for their past crimes.”

“You may very well die in prison,” Judge Tinney said to the now 84-yearold Whitehead.

“Age does not mitigate a prison term, even when there is little possibility of life afterwards.”

The court heard that had Whitehead not pleaded guilty and instead been found guilty by trial, Judge Tinney would have given a prison sentence of 13 years and six months with a nonparole period of nine years.

“But for your guilty plea, I would give a much more significant prison term,” he said.

victims asked any more possible victims to come forward, as one of them expressed they did not believe the abuse stopped after 1985.

Another expressed his happiness to know Whitehead would be spending time in prison, saying “it’s a great result to see Whitehead get what he deserves”.

Others were more scathing in their reaction, saying: “I hope he dies in jail” and “he’s an evil torturer” as well as “jail is too good for him”.

Judge Tinney addressed Whitehead during sentencing, saying: “You have left a trail of human wreckage in your wake”.

$1m school development opens

By PETER DOUGLAS LA TROBE MP Jason Wood last Tuesday officially opened the new Middle School Centre at Belgrave Heights Christian School.

Students and staff at the school now have full use of six newly constructed classrooms, a meeting area, a small group area, a staff room, a music room and student amenities.

The Australian Government provided $250,000 in funding from the Capital Grants Program for the $1 million facility.

Mr Wood said the development at the school would be fantastic for the students.

“It was great to visit the school and see first-hand the new centre,” Mr Wood said.

“Students and the whole school community in Belgrave Heights will benefit from using the new facilities.

“These new learning spaces take into account the latest in education research and will see students learn more effectively.”

The centre comprises general learning areas, meeting areas, small group

areas and student amenities.

It combines flexible learning spaces and furniture with innovation to provide a creative and practical educational centre.

Meanwhile, the amphitheatre outside allows for an extra teaching and learning space and has been frequently used, including as a performance space.

Sarah Kelly, from the school, said the space was designed to encourage creativity and physical activity.

For example, the glass walls can be written on, which is great for group work or brainstorming.

The outside space also includes a giant chessboard, table tennis table, and a parkour area.

Ms Kelly said the school was grateful over the strong turn-out at the launch.

“Both Jason Wood and (Member for Monbulk) James Merlino attended the opening, and we were so honoured to have them both here,” she said.

“Jason officially opened the facility and spoke very encouragingly about the school’s recent growth, leadership and the calibre of the students.”

Aiming for swim season

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS OLINDA pool committee members braved the cold today to celebrate the confirmation of an agreement to commence repair works on the pool.

Yarra Rangers mayor Maria McCarthy and Monbulk MP and Deputy Premier James Merlino were also in attendance to mark the occasion and show their support for the project.

Yarra Ranges Council facility operations manager Ron Pearce said they were hoping to have the pool ready to open for public use at the beginning of

the swimming season.

“We’re hoping to have the project finished by the end of November, if the weather is kind to us,” he said.

The Olinda pool was closed two years ago due to cracks appearing in the ageing structure, among other reasons.

Yarra Ranges Council voted in favour in a council meeting in November last year to allocate a budget of $770,000 to repair the pool and upgrade facilities.

Monbulk MP James Merlino last year pledged $500,000 to assist with the

pool repairs and construction of a precinct playground.

While the State Government has pledged money toward the rejuvenation the pool, only half of that will go towards the pool itself.

The remaining $250,000 will be put towards a playground that will link the pool area with the developing recreation precinct on the former Olinda Golf Course.

“It’s a once in a generation opportunity to give the community use of the recreation area 12 months a year,” Mr Merlino said.

Upgrades to the pool will include installation of a liner to the swimming pool to eliminate leaks, renewal of existing infrastructure, refurbishment of existing toilet and bathroom facilities and construction of a new accessible toilet for people with disabilities.

“We’re really happy with this commitment,” Pool Committee member Duncan Brown said.

The management of the pool after the upgrades will be transferred to community volunteers with council support.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after the Wandin Valley Nursery was trashed and burgled over the weekend, closing down the business for a busy trading day.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said that between 5pm on Saturday 25 July and 9am the following day, thieves broke into the Wandin Valley Nursery on the Warburton Highway.

Det Sgt Barrow said the thieves cut a hole in the nursery’s perimeter fence to get onto the property before smashing a window in the office building.

A safe, containing a quantity of cash, was then stolen from the property, which was trashed in the robbery.

“It looks like the thieves have pulled some things apart, looking for whatever they were looking for - which I assume is cash,” he said.

“There’s a little bit of damage to the property.”

The safe was later found near Silvan Reservoir, and Det Sgt Barrow said a light coloured Ford sedan was spotted in the driveway of the nursery at the time of the break-in.

A staff member at the nursery, posting on a Facebook noticeboard, said the nursery was closed to the public on the Sunday after the burglary.

They said the safe, which was bolted into a cupboard, contained a Surface 3 Pro tablet computer, the business’s cash register float and charity donations.

Briefly POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an excavator was stolen from a building site in Monbulk earlier this month.

The yellow JCB excavator was stolen with its trailer from a site on Old Emerald Road in Monbulk between Saturday 18 and Monday 20 July.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said the thief cut a padlock on the worksite and then towed away the excavator on a its grey trailer.

He said it was not known what direction the thieves travelled, and that the total cost of the stolen items was about $50,000.

A post on the Eyewatch - Yarra Ranges Police Service Area Facebook page has listed the trailer’s registration number as V65285.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Caravan stolen POLICE are searching for a caravan that was stolen from Wandin North last week, and are appealing for witnesses after a car was spotted at the scene of the crime.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said about midnight between Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 July, a Jayco Flamingo caravan was stolen from a Beenak Road property in Wandin North.

The caravan is described as white with black trim around the bottom, and was expandable. Its value is estimated at $23,000.

Det Sgt Barrow said a light-coloured vehicle was seen driving away with the caravan attached, and had asked for anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Ute stolen from Montrose TWO men are expected to face court after being

arrested for an aggravated burglary in Montrose last week.

At 6am on Wednesday 22 July, a house was broken into in The Boulevard in Montrose and keys to an Isuzu ute were stolen, along with the car.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said three people were arrested in relation to the matter, with two men charged with aggravated burglary and theft of a motor vehicle.

The other man has been released, pending further inquiries.

The pair are expected to face Ringwood Magistrates’ Court in the near future.

Man faces burglary charges A DOVETON man will face court after being arrested for burglaries around Kilsyth earlier this month.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Pat Barrow said police had executed a search warrant on Friday 24 July, recovering numerous power tools.

A 34-year-old Doveton man was arrested in regards to burglary and theft in Kilsyth earlier this month, and Det Sgt Barrow said the man was still before the courts on the matter.

Check road conditions EMERALD police are calling on drivers to take it easy on wet roads, after a number of minor crashes in the area.

Emerald Police Sergeant Danny Hower told the Mail that police had been called to a number of minor crashes in recent weeks, where the wet weather had contributed to the crashes.

“We’re still having some poor driving techniques displayed around town, irrespective of what’s happened recently,” Sgt Hower said.

“We’re trying to reinforce that message to drive safely,” he said.

Sgt Hower’s comments come less than a month after a triple fatality in nearby Avonsleigh, which killed three local teenagers.

“We’re just calling on people to be careful, with the season being the way it is,” he said.

Car impounded AN UPWEY man has had his car impounded after being caught driving without a licence in Dandenong earlier this month.

State Highway Patrol officers pulled over the 32-year-old man after he was witnessed driving erratically on Princes Highway at 1am on Friday 17 July.

Police took an oral fluid drug test, which came back positive and will be subjected to forensic testing, before discovering the man was an unlicensed learner driver in an unregistered vehicle.

The car was immediately impounded and the driver is expected to be charged with unlicensed driving, drug driving and using an unregistered motor vehicle.

I WOULD just like to share my opinion for the marriage equality survey.

I totally support same-sex marriage in Australia.

Well done for putting the question out there.

Marriage survey redundant LAST week I was appalled to receive in my letterbox a mailer from our local MP Jason Wood that appeared only to be a blatant personal attack on the Labor candidate for La Trobe, Simon Curtis.

We are a long way out from an election and this piece showed Mr Wood as desperate and disingenuous.

Surely mid-term he would take the time to write to us on health, education or the NBN, but instead he sunk as low as he possible could, or did he?

Obviously rather than working hard for the people of La Trobe, Mr Wood is working hard trying to keep his job with little or no concern for the real issues in the electorate.

Case in point, this week Mr Wood has trumpeted La Trobe votes and is looking for the electorate’s leaning on the subject of marriage equality.

It is nothing more than a cynical exercise that looks like it was put together by a Year 10 civics class.

If Mr Wood was really doing his job, he would know that a recent ReachTel survey showed around 75 per cent support for the marriage equality in our electorate.

There is no need to pretend to be listening to all voices - the train has left and Mr Wood is running to catch up.

‘La Trobe votes’ is nothing more than an exercise designed to cover Mr Wood’s backside.

In the last election, Mr Wood made only one public appearance, that being at an Australian Christian Lobby function, where he stood against marriage equality.

Now he has sniffed the wind and has realised he will be on the wrong side of history and he needs to reduce the damage.

Marriage equality is long overdue.

If Mr Wood is against it, he should say so and let the electorate know where he stands, not vice-versa.

This sham poll is a cheap and cynical effort by our local member to clumsily engage our community.

If he was to bother to get out and talk to people, he would quickly realise the community has already spoken.

Be change we want to see I HAD an old uncle who grew up in the early decades of the 1900s.

He hated Catholics.

He believed that all the Catholics in Australia were ready to take over the nation and make it Catholic.

They were just waiting for the word from the Pope and they would bring out their guns that

they were hiding under their beds, and they would overthrow the nation and make it ... Catholic.

He believed that Catholics were disloyal to Australia.

They were first and foremost aligned to an Italian Pope.

They would destroy our way of life, our values.

After all, some Catholics were terrorists in Ireland and England.

They let off bombs and killed people.

He was wrong, of course; wrong about Catholics in Australia.

But he reminds me of the people today who think that all the Muslims in this country are really disloyal to Australia and just waiting for some world leader of Islam to give the order.

(There is no one such person, of course; Islam is very diverse with many different groups all with their own leaders).

He was wrong then, and they are wrong now.

We laugh at my uncle’s mistaken views now.

In a couple of decades from now, we will hopefully also laugh at the foolishness of the current attitudes of some in our community.

The anti-Muslim, anti-immigration, fearful rallies in recent days are a sad feature of some parts of the Australian community.

They are based on fear, ignorance, stereotyping and (sometimes) even racism.

We need to resist such misunderstanding and fear-mongering.

But we should resist it with education, tolerance and demonstrating in our lives a better way.

‘Not’ with violence.

The Casey Multifaith Network stands ‘with’ those who support multiculturalism, and the celebration of diversity.

But we also stand ‘against’ the use of violence.

By anyone.

Even those we sympathise with.

After all, if we don’t tolerate the intolerant, we have become them.

Let us not stoop to the low levels we abhor in others, but let us live to the highest ideals, and ‘be the change we want to see in the world’.

Captain’s call may override IN RELATION to La Trobe MP Jason Wood’s announcement of a marriage equality survey (‘Mail’, Tuesday, 14 July), I wonder if our representative in Canberra really believes the ‘Captain’ of ‘team Australia’ will allow him, or the electors he represents, to actually vote in accord with the result of a survey.

Does he believe he will be allowed a conscience vote?

If he is, with his ‘Captain’s’ consent, of course, allowed a conscience vote, will he vote in accord with his conscience or the result of the survey?

He probably thought a survey was a good idea at the time but it might turn out to be a ‘Catch 22’.

CROWDFUNDING platforms such as ‘gofundme’ have proven a great way for everyday community members to seek assistance in a relatively straightforward way.

Not all of us have the time or capacity to develop and execute fund-raising initiatives, particularly in times of great stress such as a medical emergency.

So, it’s great to see that crowdfunding is being truly embraced in the Yarra Ranges.

Presently, it is being put to great use after the sister of a Mount Evelyn mother set up a ‘gofundme’ page.

The new mother this month gave birth to her son, Elijah, who has been diagnosed with heart defects.

Elijah has already had open-heart surgery and will likely require further surgeries in the coming 12 months.

In setting up the ‘gofundme’ site, it was originally thought a target of just $1000 would be achievable.

But it’s a testament to the power of crowdfunding, as well as to the generosity of the Yarra Ranges community, the figure presently stands at nearly $14,000.

That’s a serious weight lifted from the shoulders of a family in need.

As many would know, the logistical challenges in such situations can be taxing, not to mention the financial burden.

The beauty of crowdfunding is the ability for the message to be communicated beyond family networks and into the wider community.

Another positive is for the everyday citizen, who may not know the beneficiary, to lend a hand anonymously.

No matter the size of the donation, both parties are often the winner.

That’s not to say there is not potential to abuse this system.

One only needs to cite disgraced wellness blogger Belle Gibson to see how crowdfunding can be abused.

Caution is always urged.

But in cases such as Elijah’s, it’s fantastic to see the power of social media really enhancing the generosity of the Yarra Ranges.

Frozen berries in pipeline for plates

By PETER DOUGLAS YELLINGBO-BASED property Sunny Ridge will play a central role in a development aimed at entering the frozen berry market on a commercial scale.

The Matilda’s group has launched the initiative, after a recent national scare during which 24 people contracted Hepatitis A, believed to be from eating contaminated frozen berries that were imported.

The group’s overall aim is for Australia to have its first 100 per cent locally grown frozen berries.

The Yellingbo property will house purpose-built equipment designed to process and package the berries, with the fruit being

sourced from land throughout Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

Matilda’s co-founders, Matt and Ruth Gallace, said the business had now secured distributors in every state.

“We have had to start this entirely from scratch,” Ruth said.

“That has meant having machinery purpose built and designed, and creating a factory from the ground up.

“The decision has meant things have taken much longer, much like an architectural house build.”

Ruth said they were proud that the group had chosen to take no short-cuts in establishing the operation.

MOUNT Evelyn mother Kat Crinis’s world turned upside down this month after her newborn son, Elijah, was diagnosed with a congenital heart failure.

During her pregnancy, Ms Crinis had been enjoying a close bond with her sister, Jackie Trewhella, who was also pregnant.

Everything looked to be tracking nicely for Ms Crinis after a normal scan at 20 weeks and then enjoying a relatively normal birth.

However, according to Ms Crinis’s sister, things didn’t seem right after Elijah was born.

“He wasn’t feeding well, he was breathing fast and he was generally unsettled,” Ms Trewhella said.

“They got discharged from hospital, but at the first midwife appointment they noticed Elijah’s breath-rate and they went back to hospital.

“He was transferred to the Royal Children’s Hospital and is in the intensive care unit.”

Doctors later told the family that Elijah has three congenital heart defects.

He has undergone one open-heart operation and will have another within nine months.

Doctors expect that Elijah will have about three operations within the next three years, and he is not expected to leave hospital for at least another six months.

While Ms Trewhella is 40 weeks

Elijah faces another six months in hospital after being admitted to intensive care. pregnant, that hasn’t stopped her from wanting to help.

She created a gofundme webpage to help raise funds for Ms Crinis and her husband to help cover lost wages, the commute from their home and the hospital parking, which is about $36 per day.

Ms Trewhella said the support from friends, families and strangers had been overwhelming.

“Gofundme wants you to put down a goal when you set up an account, I made a $1000 goal thinking that was a bit presumptuous,” Ms Trewhella said.

But, as of this morning, the figure has reached an incredible $13,180, which has been raised by 148 people in just seven days.

THEATRE-LOVERS will get a blast from the past from this week as an adaptation of favourite sitcom ‘Steptoe and Son’ hits the stage.

After months of preparation, The 1812 Theatre Company in Ferntree Gully will hold its opening night of the show at the Lowe Auditorium this Thursday.

This classic British comedy tells the story of a middle-aged man and his elderly father who run an unsuccessful ‘rag and bone’ business.

Ian Johnson from 1812 Theatre Company said the show had a wide appeal.

“This is not a modern adaptation of the television show, but stays true to the original,” he said.

“The script is an adaptation from three episodes of the show.

“Such sitcom-based plays are appealing because the audiences are already familiar with the characters and themes.”

Mr Johnson said the production team has assembled a top cast and an amazing setting.

“We pride ourselves on producing visually stunning sets,” he said.

Town’s identities featured THE Emerald Arts Society each year dedicates itself in representing some of Emerald’s local identities in painted or photographic form for their ‘Portraits of Emerald’ exhibition.

Dark tribute to screen icon BURRINJA is ramping up the entertainment options in the region with a series of fantastic upcoming events.

Firstly, the golden age of Hollywood is being revisited with a darkly comic tribute to 1940s screen siren, Veronica Lake.

‘Drowning in Veronica Lake’ will be a feature on 1 August, 8pm, at the Burrinja Theatre.

Lake experienced the highs and lows of stardom, including being sued by her own mother, as well as her battles with booze and bad romance.

The play has been described as a striking, sultry and honest play that combined the dramatic prowess of Alex Ellis with Phil Ornsby’s razor sharp script.

Also featuring at Burrinja is an exhibition which highlights the cultural and artistic value of Aboriginal Art. ‘Black Art White Walls: The Adrian and Anne Newstead Indigenous Art Collection’ features more than 60 diverse works from Aboriginal artists across Australia.

The exhibition provides an opportunity for the region to become immersed in some amazing Aboriginal art.

When the Newsteads began travelling around Australia collecting Indigenous artworks in the 1980s, they said they had “no idea” they were at the forefront of what would slowly grow to become a dominant art movement.

Solar plan a national first

By PETER DOUGLAS STUDENTS at Mountain District Christian School have used a business studies unit to help raise funds to support a local family.

In a fantastic display of kindness, funds raised from this year’s Year 8 school fete has helped to raise $2600 for a family, whose youngest daughter battles leukaemia.

From the total, $1000 came from Year 8 student, Dylan, who shaved his hair for the cause.

Dylan (pictured) was presented with an award from Victoria Police for his honourable action.

As part of the ‘Starting a Business’ unit, the students had to learn about teamwork, applying for a business loan, ordering, purchasing, production and sales.

“They have really taken ownership of this project.”

MOUNTAIN District Christian School has become the first school nationally to commit to a novel Planet Ark-driven renewable energies program.

In a conscious effort to reduce the school’s carbon footprint, the school has teamed up with the environmental organisation to install a 20kw solar panel system on its gym roof.

The joint scheme is a (PPA) power purchase agreement, whereby the school receives the panels free but Planet Ark sells electricity to the school at a reduced cost.

The panels will be gifted to the school in 15 years’ time.

The school’s business manager Tony Drummond said the initiative would benefit the school for years to come.

He added the project was part of the school’s commitment to the environment.

“We’ve completed a few similar initiatives,” he said.

“Recently the school changed every light to LED, which cost the school $40,000, but will pay for itself in five to six years,” he said.

During the event, there were speeches and the unveiling of a plaque in front of the guests and the Year 9 Environmental Science class, as well as school staff, board members and parents.

Back in 2014, there were multiple crash on the road to Mount Donna Buang. hicles going up the mountain as they have more difficulty in starting again if stopped.

Always carry chains and ensure they are fitted correctly when required.

FOR some during winter, staying indoors rugged up and watching the television can be the way to while away the cooler months.

For others, there is nothing more exciting than hitting the alpine regions, either for play or merely to experience the wonder of Mother Nature.

But snow-goers planning to visit popular destinations such as Mount Donna Buang, or even further afield such as Mount Buller, Mount Hotham or Falls Creek, preparation is key to ensuring a safe return.

That’s not only on the slopes, but on the roads, too.

Drivers are reminded that alpine driving is safe, provided time is taking to prepare for the trip.

TAC road safety manager Liz Waller said there were many initiatives promoting safe alpine driving this winter, particularly among younger drivers.

For example, she said Vanessa Bute from the TAC would be at Mount Buller to promote safe driving practices.

“Buller is a perfect fit for Vanessa where young people love to go for a good time on the mountain,” Ms Waller said.

“We know young people are more likely to be involved in road trauma and, given the additional hazards involved with driving in the snow and wet and slippery conditions, it’s important that young people hitting the slopes keep safety in mind.”

Vanessa will be parked at the Horse Hill chairlift from 7.30am to 11am and 3.30pm to 6pm each Saturday and Sunday until 9 August.

Ms Waller encouraged anyone visiting Buller this winter to adapt their driving to suit the conditions and gave the following safety tips: Drive slowly on ice and snow to retain traction.

Braking should be gentle and not left to the last second.

Use an even pressure on the accelerator to lessen the chances of wheel spin and loss of control.

Use lower gears than normal to reduce speed and assist in keeping good traction.

The match against Monbulk at Don Road this Saturday will see the club’s footballers, netballers and supporters raise funds for the McGrath Foundation and the Breast Cancer Network of Australia.

The day will combine the special ‘Pink’ match with their president’s lunch for sponsors and Life Members.

Club vice-president Kym Estcourt said there would be plenty on offer for spectators, as well as many opportunities to support two great organisations.

The club will put on a high tea, while the half-time entertainment will see a whole new generation of ‘Bloods’ on the ground for the Auskick grid game.

The pink jumpers worn by the players will go under the

hammer at day’s end.

Kym said the pink round was part of the club’s annual program, but it was the first time the footballers would run onto the ground in the symbolic pink.

The McGrath Foundation is one of Australia’s leading breast cancer support organisations, with over 33,000 Australian families supported by over 100 McGrath breast care nurses nationally in the last six years.

“We usually raise about $1500, but we wanted to raise more so we can make an even more significant donation to each organisation,” Kym said.

The club is hoping the wider Healesville community will get behind the club and help make Saturday’s round a huge success.

Gates open at 10am for netball and the Under 18s football match, followed by the reserves, with the seniors kicking off at 2pm.

A MAN is in hospital after being rescued from a three-metre hole in Yering on Thursday, in a two-hour operation that brought together brigades from around the valley.

About 10.50am on Thursday 23 July, a man believed to be in his fifties was working on an underground swimming pool area, standing on scaffolding inside a three-metre hole.

Coldstream CFA Captain Sean Bethell said the scaffolding collapsed under the man

when he was about one metre off of the ground in the hole.

“It caught his leg, flipped him over and bumped him on the back of his head,” Capt Bethell said.

Emergency services were called out to the scene for a “trench rescue”, which Capt Bethell said could have been an incident where a person was trapped under dirt.

Coldstream CFA, Lilydale CFA, Lilydale SES, Dandenong High Angle Rescue, Monbulk High Angle Rescue, Frankston Breathing Apparatus Support,

Hallam Hazmat, WorkSafe, Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria all responded to the incident.

The man was trapped underground for two hours, before being finally extracted and taken to Maroondah Hospital in a stable condition.

Capt Bethell said all of the services at the scene of the incident “worked very well as a team”.

“It was really good to see the emergency services coming together to do a good job,” he said.

A champion turnout

By JAMIE STRUDLEY YARRA Ranges Athletics members and families descended upon Westerfolds Park on Saturday for the Little Athletics Victoria State Cross Country Championships.

A great turnout of club athletes joined almost 1000 other athletes from around the state for a competitive day of racing.

The club had a fantastic day, with all athletes having outstanding races and achieving excellent results.

Standout performances were medals to Kiara Flavel (1st), Georgia Laven (1st), James Laven (1st), Maddie Laven (2nd) and Ruby Dixon (3rd).

The Under 13s Boys team also finished second in the teams event.

Congratulations and thank you to all of Yarra Ranges Athletics who came to spectate, compete or help out to ensure another successful day of cross country action.

By DENNIS FULLER THE stars were all aligned for Kennith Hill (17) at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday when he joined the top three scorers for the last round of the three round Winter Cup. By play’s end he stood tall and amassed 100 points to win from Ross Martin (10) who chased him all the way home, three back on 97.

A gaggle of golfers came in with 92, including Philip Crossley (21), Davis Aitken (27) and Ian Scott (25) and the great unwashed were left licking their wounds and blaming everybody but themselves for bad shot selections and an inability to play golf properly.

The daily competition saw a win for Peter Clowes (16) with 38 stableford points and in B Grade it was left to Allan Ecclestone (18) who came in with 33.

pins stage when he was nearest on the 4th, the 12th and the 13th.

Martin did the job on the 7th and Hill shoved aside all challenges when his shot on the 18th won him the pro pin lolly.

The ladies’ Winter Cup saw a race in two with Leanne Morison just pipping Petra Clowes by one point on the 18th hole.

On Wednesday, when the Obviously Floppy Golfers (OFG) rolled in, it was announced that it was a stroke event.

Geoff Whittaker (26) took on this challenge and rolled in some big putts to score a nett 65 to win the massive prize.

Moss Fuller (24) and John Carvill (20) finished just one shot away on 66 to take out the much smaller and less significant prize.

Next Saturday is a chance for members to pocket the August Monthly Medal.

Big guns assert dominance FINALS time is looming.

One more round to go for the Dandenong Ranges Juniors.

The veterans played their last round on Sunday and finals will start for them on Sunday 9 August.

Congratulations to Croydon North for finishing minor premiers. The minor premiership looks all sewn up by Wandin in Division 1, while the reserves is still hotly contested between four clubs.

Healesville and Upwey Tecoma are likely to face up in the Under 18s big dance.

Division 2 seniors is a toss-up between Emerald and Thornton Eildon, while in the reserves it is clearly Emerald.

Netball sees Wandin and Olinda Ferny Creek fighting it out for top spot and it might come down to the last round. A Grade Division 2 minor premiership belongs to Seville, which holds a healthy advantage, sitting on top of the ladder.

But, finals are different games, as we all know.

DIVISION 1 SENIORS Healesville 22.18(150) d Upwey Tecoma 6.12(48) Healesville was brilliant in the first half as they piled on 8 goals to 2 in the first quarter and then backed that up with a 6 goal to just 1 point second term to race to a 78-point lead at the main break. Upwey did show a bit of fight in the third quarter and outscored Healesville 3 goals to 1, but Healesville showed their class in the final term, booting 7 goals to 1 to run out 102-point victors after a dominant performance for the majority of the game.

Woori Yallock 15.26(116) d Yarra Glen 1.8(14) Woori should have had this game completely wrapped up at quarter time but they booted 1.12 to just 1 point keeping Yarra Glen in touch. Woori did break away in the second as they completely controlled the play. They booted 5 goals to 2 points and went to half-time with a 49-point advantage.

Woori continued to dominate in the third, booting 4.7 to no score and their lead was out to 80 points.

Yarra Glen did eventually kick a goal in the last quarter, but unfortunately it was their only major for the day as Woori added another 5 goals to their total to win by what was an easy 102 points.

Monbulk 16.17 (113) d Warburton Millgrove 10.6(66) Monbulk had a really solid first half, which set up their victory. They booted 5 goals to 1 in the opening term and added another 5 goals to 2 in the second to jump out to a 42-point lead at half-time.

The second half was actually a good contest as Warby played a more accountable brand of football making Monbulk work for every possession.

Warby booted 7.1 to Monbulk’s 6.12 in the second half, and in reality Monbulk should have won by a greater margin, but was wasteful in the last term booting 3.8. But they were certainly the better side and deserved their 47-point win.

Olinda Ferny Creek 11.15.81 d Mount Evelyn 11.6.72 Olinda may have led this game all day, but Mount Evelyn certainly gave them bit of a fright late in the game. Olinda led by 26 points at the long break after an 8.10 to 5.2 first half and did look in control. Mount Evelyn did reduce the margin in the third quarter to 22 points after they outscored Olinda 3 goal to 2 to keep them within striking distance. The last term saw Mount Evelyn once again reduce the margin as they held Olinda to just 1 goal while they booted 3. Unfortunately for Mount Evelyn, time beat them, which saw Olinda celebrate a 9-point win in what was a very good contested game.

Wandin was once again wasteful in the third as they booted 10 behinds. They did, however, also kick 6 goals to go with that while Belgrave slotted three and Wandin’s lead was out to 74 points at the last change. The last term was a bit of a slog, but Wandin still outscored Belgrave 4 goals to 1 to win easily once again.

DIVISION 2 SENIORS Seville 13.9 (87) d Alexandra 10.7(67) Alexandra started off well in the first quarter booting 5 goals straight to Seville’s 3 to grab a 12-point lead at the first change and give Seville plenty to think about. Seville was a lot more accountable in the second term and defensively was excellent. They kept Alexandra to just four behinds while they added 5.3 to go into half-time with a 17-point lead. The second half was a very even contest and went goal for goal but Seville was able to hold off any challenge that Alexandra threw their way and was able to hold on to win by 20 points in what was a hotly contested battle.

Emerald 17.22(124) d Yarra Junction 2.2(14) Emerald was just way too good for a Junction side that struggled to match their dominant running power. Emerald led by 29 points at the first change and stretched that to 45 points at the main break. Emerald really put their foot down in the third as they hammered on eight goals while Junction scored 1 goal which was their first for the day. Emerald’s lead was 91 points at three-quarter time. The last quarter still saw Emerald control the play but they did finish with an inaccurate 3.7 to 1 goal in the final term, but, nevertheless, they won in a canter by 110 points.

Kinglake 17.11(113) d Thornton Eildon 9.10(64) Kinglake has bounced back to some of its best form with a 49-point win over the in-form Thornton Eildon. Kinglake started the day full of run as they booted 7 first quarter goals to 2 to lead by 31

points at quarter time. Thornton Eildon did bounce back hard in the second term and played direct football that paid dividends on the scoreboard as they kicked 5 goals to 1, which saw Kinglake lead by just 4 points at the main break. The second half really did belong to Kinglake. They won the majority of the one on one contests and had Thornton Eildon chasing tail. Kinglake booted 4 goals to 1 in the third to lead by 25 points at the final change and then finished off in great style with a 5-goalto-1 last term to come away with a great victory and bounce back into top form.

Gembrook Cockatoo 9.7(61) d Yea 4.6(30) This wasn’t the prettiest game to witness as it was quite low scoring, with a total of just 13 goals scored for the day with seven of those goals coming in the first term. Gembrook led by eight points at the first break after a 4.2-to-3.0 first quarter. There was only one goal scored in the second term, but that did go the way of Gembrook and their lead was out to 18 points at the main break.

The second half was a battle but Gembrook was the team that did control the tempo of the match.

They booted 2 goals to 1 in the third and then added another 2 goals to just 1 point in the last to come away with a 31-point win in a game that didn’t have a lot of highlights but Gembrook won’t be too concerned about that as they’ll happily take the victory Gembrook Cockatoo best players: R. Monbulk only scored 2 behinds in the third but Warburton wasn’t really able to make an impact on the scoreboard as they only scored 1.1 and Monbulk held a handy 16-point lead at the final change. The last quarter was an arm wrestle and neither side could find any real ascendancy; both sides scored one goal which saw Monbulk come away with a well-deserved 14-point victory.
