Dale said land supply shortages were shutting out home buyers.

THE MEDIAN price of a vacant building block in Geelong has jumped alarmingly, according to a latest Housing Industry Association (HIA) residential land report.

The Barwon region’s median land price is now $204,000, up from $179,000 two years ago.

The 12 per cent increase was

Jack Gatto, a 24-year-old from Leopold (pictured), is off to Memphis after winning the right to represent Australia at Elvis Week, with the event including a competition to find the “ultimate tribute artist”.

Jack’s gig follows numerous other Presleybased activities in Geelong over the years, including regular shows by other tribute artists and Geelong Jukebox Rockers’ Elvis Tribute Festival.

That’s the verdict on the national TV appearance this week of local muscleman Calum Von Moger (pictured).

The Mr Universe winner has earned a deserved reputation for looking a lot like Arnold Schwarzenegger but his attempt to impersonate Arnie’s Germanic vocal stylings fell somewhat short.

Calum’s attempt was closer to Sergeant Schultz from Hogan’s Heroes with a Japanese twist.

A LOCAL paper must have already decided the Cats can’t make the finals this season.

Its story about defender Jared Rivers opined he would need to play every one of the remaining seven home and away rounds to join the 200game club.

Rivers, who was injured for last week’s clash against the Western Bulldogs, sits on 193 games and is almost certain he will retire at season’s end.

Playing your 200th game in a final would certainly be memorable, though.

Marles rocks the boat

GEELONG refugee advocates are “horrified� at Richard Marles’ backflip on turning back asylum-seeker boats.

Labor’s federal Member for Corio and shadow immigration minister joined leader Bill Shorten to call for a turn-back option in the ALP’s refugee policy.

Combined Refugee Action Group (CRAG) spokesperson Lisa Gleeson said a range of similar groups were also “expressing extreme displeasure� at the change. “I have had any number of conver-

sations in the last 24 hours concerning refugees and all were struck by a sense of betrayal,� Ms Gleeson said. “To attempt to make it ALP policy is such a breathtaking betrayal. “People’s level of horror and disgust that there is virtually no difference between Labor and Liberal policy will stir a lot into action.�

Ms Gleeson said Mr Shorten’s comments about raising refugee intakes and extending resettlement entitlements were “absolutely meaningless�.

She said Mr Marles, as shadow immigration minister, should do something better than following the gov-

ernment line. “This is disgraceful when you’re playing with people’s lives.�

Ms Gleeson warned that Mr Marles would be unwise to disregard the impact of the change at the ballot box. “The potential in garnering a few votes from people at that end of the political spectrum will be offset by the droves of people deserting him in horror.�

Ms Gleeson said the policy proposal was all the more ironic given Mr Marles was based in a region of extensive refugee resettlement. “If he can’t look out of his window

and see the hand of friendship extended to someone who came here by boat then I’m at a loss for words.�

Mr Marles said ignoring a turnback option would “send a dangerous message to people smugglers�.

Doing otherwise would risk putting the smugglers back in business, with an “inevitable� repeat of drownings, he warned. “This is about having a sensible, safe set of policies that will stop people from dying.�

Mr Marles said this weekend’s ALP national conference would need to hold a “difficult but dignified debate� in making the “tough decision�.

Virus zombie horror feeds on grandpa and residents

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A CHILDHOOD memory of her grandfather hunched over a typewriter surrounded by piles of paper stayed with Rachel Drummond.

The Bell Park author cites him as the inspiration behind her determined efforts to publish her young adult fiction novel, The South Forsaken.

But moving to Geelong and discovering what lifelong residents take for granted inspired the plot. “I wrote around what I saw,� Ms Drummond said. “Geelong provided fertile ground for my imagination. Once I realised the CSIRO animal health laboratory was in my backyard the story all but wrote itself. “The story stands on its own but Geelong plays a starring role, including iconic spots like Simonds Stadium and Cunningham Pier.�

Ms Drummond began seriously pursuing the project after her grandfather died a few years ago. “My grandfather is my inspiration, not only in writing but in life. I can picture him clearly seated behind his typewriter, piles of paper stacked haphazardly around him in the guest room as he immortalised his stories and poems in words. “I knew that I wanted to do that too. I like to think that he would be as proud of my efforts as the rest of my family have been so far.�

Ms Drummond used her nursing background and fan-driven interest in the horror and zombie genres to sketch the story’s background. “I noticed there was a surprising lack of zombie and post-apocalyptic books based in Australia, so I wanted to write about something closer to home. “I wanted to invent a virus that could even in one’s wildest imagination actually happen and then guide a small group through this new horrific landscape. I wanted to write the book that I wanted to read in a setting I knew intimately.�

Ms Drummond self-published the book before finding a publisher, with print and digital editions due for release in September.

A MAN was trapped for 30 minutes and four people were injured in a three-car collision on the Hamilton Hwy at Stonehaven, west of Geelong, yesterday morning.

A woman and a toddler, a man in his 70s and a woman in her 50s were all taken to hospital in Geelong, with rescuers forced to use jaws of life machinery to cut away wreckage to rescue the trapped driver.

DRIVERLESS cars and improved road and vehicle technology coupled with driver education will be the main means of reducing the road toll in the future, according to Geelong’s new head of the TAC. The organisation’s head of community relations, Joe Calafiore, has been appointed new chief executive, replacing the retiring Janet Dore.

Mr Calafiore, who was raised in Geelong’s northern suburbs, said technological advances held exciting potential to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries.

“Insurers know that if they could put everyone in a five-star car today it would cut road trauma by a third overnight,” he said.

“And that’s with today’s technology. Some of the initiatives in three to five years’ time will have enormous potential in road safety.

“Ideas like vehicle-to-vehicle communications, automatic braking and even driverless cars have the opportunity for a very significant reduction in road trauma.

“It’s not a matter of if but when it will happen in Australia.”

Mr Calafiore said the highest risk drivers – young men were in the oldest cars while the most-experienced drivers – often their parents – were in the bestequipped cars.

“We know we can’t wave a magic wand and change that but we’re asking ourselves how we put pressure on parents when they’re looking at what car to give their kids.”

Mr Calafiore said the TAC was partnering VicRoads in developing a road safety experience centre that would be a “genuine world first”.

“We have a greater ambition about what we can achieve in road safety and an implementa-

tion of a driver education model.

“Although it’s in its in embryonic stages, a road safety experience centre would engage with young people and become part of the licensing and training process.

“Unless we try some new things we’ll only see gradual improvement. But we don’t want gradual improvement – we cannot sit back and let 250 people a year die on the roads.”

Mr Calafiore wanted the TAC to play a broader role in the regional economy, especially with Geelong’s National Disability Insurance Agency office and WorkSafe headquarters, arriving next year.

“That’s a tangible example of the momentum started by TAC and that’s just the start.

“There are many opportunities in social insurance that we can build through our presence in Geelong.”

Footy mums power Newcomb

By NOEL MURPHY THE HAND that rocks the cradle at Newcomb is now drop-punting Sherrins and putting young footballers through their training and game-day paces.

It’s the changing face of Aussie rules and, if all goes to plan, young players will soon take more from the ground than just old-style goals, glory and gauze.

Martine Jennings, one of a new breed of junior footy coach, said respect, fair play, teamwork and discipline were some of the benefits to come from investing mums with the job of football overseers.

Together with fellow coach Kate Brady, not to forget male offsider Aaaron Chinn, she heads up Mums Monday night every week for Newcomb Power’s under-10 footy fledglings.

It’s all part of a strong community focus at the club that starts from the ground up.

And as might be expected with mums at the helm, swearing and bad behaviour’s out and backing mates and playing role model to the youngsters is in.

“We have a big anti-bullying policy but we’re also quite tough, we don’t put up with any nonsense. It’s no foul language, no swearing, keep your hands and

feet to yourselves or we’ll pull them out of training for five minutes.

“It’s the same when they play.

If they talk back to the umpires or behave inappropriately, we’ll drag them - even if it means we’re

down on players.

“I have the same expectations of my son as of all boys. It’s about showing respect, teaching them about other things on the field.

“We want to raise players who play fairly - good players and re-

ally good men.”

The club’s backing the change with barbecues, free meals after training, getting kids into the seniors rooms to hear coaches at work, a buddy system to train with senior players, coaching

clinics at schools, picking up youngsters who need lifts and more, Martine said.

The changes are being felt right through the club’s junior ranks from under-10s to under18s - and it’s paying dividends.

“We’ve only had a couple of wins but we had so many losses to get those wins was great for their self-confidence,” Martine said.

“They all give it a red hot go each week, they run as a team, they encourage others, do the little things and the team building.

It’s really important.

“We want to be good role models for them but because we’re mums sometimes they think we can’t kick. But the other night I kicked the ball and one kid said, ‘I’d pay $1000 to kick like that’, so I can kick, I do all right.”

And she can barrack, too.

Martine’s no shrinking violet when it comes to offering support from the sidelines.

“I’m the loudest one out there,” she says.

“I’m a foghorn running the boundary on game day.”

New report ‘backs push to do more for residents of poorest areas’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A REPORT confirming Corio as an entrenched area of disadvantage demonstrates that governments must adopt new ways of tackling the issue, according to the region’s councils alliance body.

G21 chief Elaine Carbines said the report revealed nothing new about the level of disadvantage in the 3214 postcode.

“Lots of money has been invested over the years and the indicators have gone backwards where the levels of employment and education are concerned,” Ms Carbines said.

“This report underscores what we’ve been saying to government over the last year.

“All previous efforts have made no difference.

In fact, if you track disadvantage over the last two Census reports it has worsened.”

Corio was listed as the third most disadvantaged suburb in Victoria, along with Broadmeadows, Doveton, Frankston North, Maryborough and Morwell.

difficulties in the most problem-plagued areas of Australia.

Report author Professor Tony Vinson said residents of the areas lacked “a fair go“ and urgent action was needed to break the cycle.

“I’ve been looking at communities for 40 years and some of the areas that were disadvantaged then are disadvantaged heavily now.“ Prof Vinson said politicians had a misconception that generational change could be achieved inside a political term of three years.

‘Fracking fear’ sways council GEELONG’S council has joined a chorus of Victorian councils demanding the state’s reserves of onshore gas remain locked up underground.

Council stated its opposition to the extraction of coal seam gas in a submission to a State Government inquiry.

“Council rejects onshore gas extraction and hydraulic fracking and supports a permanent ban,” said councillor Andy Richards, who holds an environment and sustainability portfolio.

The submission was based on feedback to a council “factfinding process” that received 449 submissions, 447 of which expressed opposition to fracking.

The submission raised issues including the potential impact of fracking on land, air and water quality. The submission also highlighted concerns about health, noise pollution and property values.

“We would also encourage people not to accept fracking fear at face value. The truth is hydraulic fracturing is a safe, reliable and well-understood technology that has been used safely and successfully in Australia to improve gas flow in wells since the 1950s.”

Fracking is the process of injecting liquid underground to fracture ground structure, releasing gas. Attempts to tap geothermal energy use a similar technique.

WANTED: The man police want to interview.

POLICE are hunting a man who allegedly stole a car and a credit card from a Geelong home.

Police alleged the man, known only as Tom, attended the victim’s house with an uknown woman between 10pm on 26 June and 6am the next day before leaving with the car and card. Police later found the vehicle without number plates

Investigators this week released an image of a man they want to interview over the thefts.

Enter the dragon: bearded Nev just chillin’ out

By NOEL MURPHY MEET Nev. He’s a little slow off the mark just now with all the cold weather – it’s not exactly what an inland bearded dragon generally prefers.

Nev is a four-year-old dragon who’s a fair trek from his normal inland Queensland habitat, which accounts for his darker-thanusual colouring. Under normal circumstances he’d be a fairly bright orange, reflecting the sun and sand of the outback.

Here in Geelong, in the hibernation season, he’s a dark grey with only hints of orange flecks on his spikes and a few scales as he warms to the body heat of owner Damian Rabbas.

Damian and wife Jo, who operate central Geelong’s Cafe Lorae, bought Nev as a pup while they were living in the coalmining town of Middlemount in central Queensland.

A birthday present for son Austin, they named Nev after the owner of the pet shop where they bought him.

“He’s beautiful and very placid,“ Jo said.

“He loses his skin and goes a bit dark in colour when the weather’s cool but when he warms up he goes a really bright orange.

“There are three types of colours: a browny sandstone, the orange and a red. You can pay up to $3000 for the red dragons.

“He loves capsicum, kiwi fruit, bok choy and crickets.”

Nev also has a special liking for mealworms, which he scoffs in short order as Damian pitches a few into Nev’s UVsoaked and heated cage.

“He’s not fully grown yet,” Damian said.

“He’s probably got another six inches to go, I’ll probably have to get a bigger cage.

“But he’s a great pet. We let him out at home and he’ll sit on your chest for the warmth, then he might get a bit active and run across the couch.

“He’s not really trained, so he’ll take off, but he usually scampers for a bit then you can pick him up again.”

As a reptile, Nev’s not exactly everyone’s cup of tea, though.

“We’ve got a mini-daschund and a foxie/chihuahua cross and Nev really spooks them,” Damian said.

ABC jobs lost with city store

GEELONG’S ABC Shop will close as the national broadcaster phases out its bricks-and-mortar retail operations in favour of online shopping.

The move affects as many as 300 staff nationally through 50 stores and 78 ABC Centres in other retail outlets.

A spokesman said the ABC was not commenting on individual shops “at this stage“.

The ABC would not confirm the number of staff in Geelong but the national ratio of workers to stores would suggest the broadcaster employs around six workers at Westfield.

“ABC Retail will review its lease arrangements with landlords and develop a revised retail model with a focus on ABC Shop Online and ABC branded outlets in other retailers,” an ABC statement said.

“This strategy aligns with the changing retail environment, as consumers increasingly access content digitally through subscription services and downloads and purchase physical products online.

“It is no longer possible for the ABC to sustain a large network of leased stores, traditionally reliant on DVD and CD formats.

“However, ABC DVDs, music, books, toys and merchandise will still be widely available for customers to purchase through ABC Shop Online and other retailers.”

The statement said the ABC would consult with staff over the coming months.

Director of ABC Commercial, Robert Patterson, said ABC Shops had been an important part of the relationship with audiences for the past 35 years and the decision had not been taken lightly.

“However, this strategy will create a more cost effective, nimble and flexible approach to servicing customers.

“This direction is also in keeping with the shift of ABC audiences to accessing content across an array of digital platforms, while maintaining an appropriate level of physical retail distribution.

“The ABC is confident that this new strategy will ensure continued audience engagement. Consumers will still be able to purchase much loved content both online and in stores.”

Head of ABC Retail, Regina Hoekstra, said the welfare of staff would be a primary focus over the next few months.

ALDI shrugs off coastal critics

By NOEL MURPHY ALDI has restated the benefits its Torquay store will offer shoppers, shrugging off a campaign against its siting adjacent to the start of the Great Ocean Road.

With a supermarket war looming for the hearts and wallets of Surf Coast shoppers, ALDI has pointed to 50 per cent savings on grocery bills, up to 20 local jobs at the new store and pledged minimal parking or traffic impacts.

Torquay Commerce and Tourism Association has lodged a submission with council voicing support, with some reservations, to the ALDI proposal.

The Geelong Library Heritage Centre is also on the walking path from Geelong Station to the hospital precinct where nearly a third of all Central Geelong workers are located.

Safety fears force big trees to fall

Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry

SAFETY fears will force more of Queenscliff’s historic pine trees to fall.

Borough of Queenscliffe said two stone pines in Princess Park would be next to go after an arborist warned they would inevitably fail, potentially without “warning or prediction”.

Both trees are 80 years old and over 15 metres high.

Public Hearings into Fire Preparations at the Anglesea Mine

“The risk is posed by their age and their extremely heavy canopies, which could cause large branches to break away.”

The borough cordoned off both trees earlier this week in preparation for tree-fellers.

The trees would go after the “recent failure” of another pine in the park.

“The work is part of council’s ongoing proactive tree

maintenance and inspection program,” the borough said.

“Consistent with council’s policy and practice, multiple trees will be planted to replace the trees being removed.”

Safety concerns have forced the borough to remove or cut back numerous old pines in recent years, including trees planted as memorials for local soldiers who died in war.

City wins tourism funds battle GEELONG has won a long battle to run its own tourism board.

Tourism Greater Geelong and the Bellarine will become Victoriaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 11th Regional Tourism Board with a $275,000 State Government funding commitment.

Tourism Minister and Member for Lara John Eren said the decision would enable the board to increase visitation and jobs.

Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and Surf Coast were part of a local region tourism board until the previous state government merged some of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s boards. Surf Coast joined an expanded tourism region stretching to the South Australia border but Geelong decided to go it alone,

leaving the new board with Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s council as a sole source of government funding.

The board now covers an area from Werribee to Barwon Heads, including Bannockburn, Geelong and Portarlington.

Mr Eren said the funding would ensure â&#x20AC;&#x153;Geelong and the Bellarine maintains its status as a renowned tourism hot spotâ&#x20AC;?.

The announcement followed the Government recently securing the future of Jetstar at Avalon Airport and transforming Geelongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Simonds Stadium into a world-class arena capable of staging the biggest and best events, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This will bring more events like the Cadel Evans Great Ocean

Road Race and the Rip Curl Pro, which attracts visitors from all over the world and puts the region on the map. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We promised to take action to grow the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tourism stocks and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re getting on with it. Push to get fat kids into sport OBESE children lacking the “basic skills” of sport are the targets of a new program rolling out in schools across the Geelong region.

Dozens of local schools have signed up to the $100 million federal initiative to “keep kids fit, healthy and happy”, according to Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson.

She noted that a quarter of Australian children were overweight or obese and “many more” performed badly at sport’s “basic skills”, like running, catching, throwing and kicking.

Three-quarters of Australian children spent spare time watching television, only a third man-

aged the recommended hour of physical activity a day and just half were involved in sport, Ms Henderson said.

“That’s why our new Sporting Schools program is so important to ensuring current and future generations of Australian kids keep fit, healthy and happy.”

The program offered schools annual funding for up to three terms of sports activity, Ms Henderson said.

Australian Institute of Sport has launched in conjunction with the program an online guide to help parents encourage their children’s participation in sport.

Institute senior consultant Dr Juanita Weissensteiner said re-

search had identified a “definite reduction” in children’s movement skills and competencies over the past 15 years.

“There is evidence that children who struggle with fundamental skills have a higher tendency to drop out of sport when they reach their teens,” Dr Weissensteiner said.

“Developing fundamental skills early can lead to greater self-belief and enjoyment, creating the potential for a life-long connection with sport and physical activity.”

Public’s trail to artists’ private lairs SURF Coast artists are preparing to throw open their private studios to the public next month.

THE DESIGNERS of Geelong’s new bus routes have made a common mistake: confusing a retirement village with aged care.

The bus now pulls up on the western side of Tannoch Brae’s front gate. Much to their delight, bus users can walk from their units, post a letter in the box at the bus stop, pay fares and go on their way.

However, those who retained their cars and drive where they want to go take their lives in their hands when they exit the gate. Navigating around the bus is not hard but trying to turn right is a different matter.

Since Breakwater Bridge opened Townsend Rd has become exceptionally busy. To see what is coming from the left is more than difficult when a bus is parked and is even more hazardous if another bus has arrived at the stop across the road.

A little more thought and research would have placed the stop in front of the wide premises that sits between the two retirement villages on Townsend Rd, obviating the driving dangers for the residents of Tannoch Brae and bringing the stop closer to residents of Townsend Garden.

This would not be so hard to do if VicRoads could acknowledge its mistake and move the stop a few metres.

Planners wrecking suburbs GEELONG’S council needs to sort out its town planning department.

With massive redevelopment in older suburbs, the department is dictating to residents.

Residents are made to feel like their objections will be considered carefully but the decisions appear a fait accompli from the beginning. This is one reason why residents place little trust in the system, with matters apparently discussed and decided prior to any consultation.

Older suburbs were not designed to accommodate higher-density housing. Each time an extra dwelling is added to a street the extra crossover reduces available parking. If the dwelling brings more than two cars, the parking issue compounds.

Many Geelong streets with single dwellings now also have multiple-storey developments that are out of character with the neighbourhood, setting precedents of open slather for developers to do what they

want with no respect for permanent residents.

Developers only want to make money and they justify the employment of town planning staff and allied professionals but what about the amenity of existing residents?

ALMOST 30 health and wellness experts will be available to meet and ask questions face to face at the Geelong Community Health and Wellness Day Expo at Geelong West Town Hall on Sunday.

Natalie Pickett, chief of event presenting partner at Wellness on Time, said there would be a fullday seminar program as well as exhibits.

The program will cover everything from yoga, wellness, therapies, coaching, training and education, in-home care, travel, self-defence and low cost healthy meals as well as fun family activities all day.

Brian to have a Wiz in Geelong HE FIRST appeared as overwrought poet Raymond J Bartholomeuz on TV’s Hey Hey It’s Saturday, an alter ego that Brian Nankervis has kept alive despite the character’s few outings in recent years.

“I carry the beret in my workbag, He’s very dear to my heart,” Nankervis told the Independent while nursing a badly bruised, possibly fractured thumb from a skiing accident at Mount Hotham.

Nankervis’s focus for the past 15 years has been predominantly on a different caste of lyricism Aussie rock verses and their protagonists.

As quizmaster and adjudicator on SBS’s runaway RocKwiz success, he’s in his element rubbing shoulders with his musical heroes and delving into the sentimental minutiae of popular music dating back to his youth and beyond.

Now the show’s heading to Geelong, with Nankervis keen on incorporating a tribute to a late and great local rock star.

“We’re thinking maybe we’ll tribute Geelong’s great daughter, Chrissy Amphlett,” he suggested to the Independent.

Nankervis regarded his constant brush with stars as a professional godsend he never anticipated.

“I’ve always loved trivia. I’ve been a rock music tragic from 12 years old when my cousin turned me on to the Rolling Stones in suburban Deepdene, then I discovered the Beatles and Bob Dylan.

“Meeting these artists is such a thrill and invariably, 99 per cent of the time, they’re actually really charming and generous with their time.”

Geelong’s Costa Hall will host RocKwiz on 10 October for an ARIA Hall of Fame evening.

Nankervis said travelling shows were exciting and fun for performers and audiences alike.

“With our shows in the Gershwin Room you know you only film a certain amount but the live shows are bigger and longer and we tend to take more risks which can often reap great rewards.”

RocKwiz had 73 ARIA inductees to choose from for the tour, all worthy of the Nankervis thumbsup – even if it’s half broken.

Gill’s art colours in Geelong of old

By NOEL MURPHY EARLY Geelong was a ruddy melange of terra cotta reds, light sandstone, timber tans and slate grey.

Artist Samuel Thomas Gill’s renderings of the Pivot, as the town was once called, show a surprisingly vibrant settlement on the faraway reaches of the civilised world.

Gill’s work, on show at Geelong Gallery, catalogued the early local society in a virtual photographic record.

The paintings were also a canny marketing tool.

Well-dressed travellers in coats and crinolines of crimson,

yellow and brown board ships in front of green slopes leading down to Corio Bay. Labourers heft bags across their shoulders while horses haul carts uphill as police and wharf officials oversee proceedings.

Kids in clever hats and suits, mothers in bonnets and pink shawls, and businessmen in top hats stroll the broad thoroughfare of Yarra St. Busy scenes are peppered with mounted police, fruit hawkers, an old man on a walking cane with his granddaughter and a forest of ship masts in the distant bay.

The sharp eye of ST Gill misses little, often focussing on the ordinary and in the process pro-

viding a remarkable insight into the everyday life of Geelong 160 years ago.

His Market Square, for instance, is a green paddock with a handful of gnarly trees, men digging a hole, others hauling timber, a man smoking a pipe on the edge of the footpath, his dog beside him observing passing oxen, carts, horses, jinkers, a woman selling wares from a table beside the footpath.

The gallery’s display, ST Gill – Town and Country Life, is a satellite exhibition of a major retrospective exhibition, Australian Sketchbook: Colonial Life and the Art of ST Gill, at Victoria’s state library.

“We have to be able to pull it off live,” Dawson said.

“Sometimes we’ll hit something in rehearsal or playing live and it sounds good, like something we can work with in the studio.

“But sometimes you have to draw the line, although the line is different for every song.”

The musical project has now morphed into a five-piece band, with the duo enlisting drummer Ryan Strathie and bassist Graham Ritchie. Reclusive producer Matt Redlich joined them as a “special guest“, hiding behind a Prophet-08 synth.

Carroll and Dawson will reconnect with their European roots when they embark on a tour later this year, jumping off from the UK. “We’re looking to go back later this year. There’s a hunger for Australian music,“ Dawson said.

“Europe is great because different countries have different tastes. Audiences in northern Europe particularly seem to be interested in what a band like us can do.

“It’s a comfortable place to tour because there is respect for musicians.”

EUROPEAN experiences are driving the musical evolution of emerging Australian duo Holy Holy.

Brisbane singer-songwriter Timothy Carroll and guitaristcomposer Oscar Dawson, from Melbourne, crafted their debut EP while living in Stockholm and Berlin in 2011.

The pair demoed tracks in the apartments, stairwells and snowcovered studios of both great cities.

They continued the collaboration back in Australia, exploring musical directions without even knowing where they might lead.

The approach serves them well on When the Storms Would Come, to be released next week.

The release, several years in the making, contains Triple J number-two hit History.

“It’s taken place over a long period of time, recording here and there and taking time between each session,” Dawson explained to the Independent.

“It’s the evolution of songs.

We first recorded a draft a few years ago but it’s not like what the band is now.”

While the pair is finally happy to release the album, they also recognise the balancing act between

Picasso paints picture of flair

By EWAN KENNEDY BUYERS looking for something that doesn’t follow convention and who appreciate a real touch of French flair should certainly have the latest Citroen C4 Picasso on their short (often very short) list of potential cars.

Just what is the Citroen C4 Picasso?

It’s hard to define, being a mixture of a tall hatchback and a people mover, with a touch of SUV thrown in for good measure.

This is not the first Citroen that refuses to slot neatly into any category, nor will it be the last.

We love the French marque for that.

Citroen C4 Picasso looks like nothing else on the road.

Most of its upper surfaces are glass, from its huge windscreen that almost merges into a supersized sunroof and onto the sleek rear glass the compact French people mover defies convention.

Inside, there are fascinating curves, facets and materials.

Many in the dashboard area are fashioned around the big electronic screens.

A large screen in the centre of the dash displays the main instruments.

It can be set up with a choice of displays to suit individual tastes and driving conditions.

A smaller screen in a more conventional position lower down in the centre console looks after air conditioning, audio and other minor tasks.

Citroen C4 Picasso is priced

MODEL RANGE: C4 Picasso 1.6-litre turbo-petrol five-door wagon: $40,990 (automatic) at $40,990 plus on-road costs.

It has a good range of standard equipment, with keyless entry and start-stop, automatic headlights and wipers, LED daytime running lamps, and foglamps with a cornering function.

Options are numerous and let you take part in customisation, as well as increase practicality.

The Lounge Pack has part leather seats, “relax style” headrests, LED light for tray tables on the backs of the front seats, front seats with electric lumbar support and massage function and electric foot rest for the front passenger ($2000); and Full Nappa leather seats with the Lounge Pack plus electrically adjustable and heated seats ($5000).

Citroens now have a six-year warranty, capped price servicing and a roadside assist package.

The C4 Picasso is powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol unit that produces 120 kilowatts.

Torque is a very useful 240 Newton metres all the way from 1400 revs to 4000.

All Australian imports of the C4 Picasso run a six-speed automatic transmission to the front wheels.

There’s no manual gearbox option here as there is in European markets.

The Drive Assist pack has lane departure warning, smart beam function, active cruise control,

anti-collision warning, active seat belts and electro-chromatic rear vision mirror.

All are worthwhile items and we suggest spending the extra $2000 makes sense.

Driving the C4 Picasso is a different experience, not only do you have that goldfish bowl in front of you, the gear lever is in an unusual spot on the top-right of the steering wheel.

It takes a bit of becoming accustomed to, so we suggest a longer than average test drive if you’ve never been in a Citroen before.

If the sunlight is too strong it can be kept out by moving the front of the cabin’s roof forward in two sections to cover the top areas of the windscreen.

Citroen Picasso’s ride comfort is everything you expect from a French car – smooth and quiet to the point of serenity.

There was more tyre noise than anticipated on some of Australia’s notorious coarse-chip surfaces, but other than that it’s pretty impressive.

Perhaps try that sort of road on your private test drive if you anticipate country touring in your new Citroen.

Handling is safe enough, but tall hatches never feel as good as standard height ones due to the higher centre of gravity.

IndySport Cats’ Giant challenge bite

On the

GREATER Western Sydney will aim for its maiden win over Geelong when the sides clash on Saturday at StarTrack Oval in Canberra.

The Cats have had the Giants’ measure since the new club’s initiation into the league, handing out a pair of 50-plus-point thrashings in the first two meetings.

But this season the tables are turned, with the western Sydney side sitting seventh on the ladder and striving for its first finals campaign.

The Giants closed the gap the last time the two teams met, scrabbling to within seven points.

Punters are finding it hard to separate the two sides this week.

A loss to Geelong would put the wobbles under the fledgling club, with competition fierce for the last four finals spots.

Geelong is not yet out of contention, either, so a loss would have dire consequences for the Cats’ season as well.

But coach Chris Scott has stressed the dual objectives of the season all along: play as well as possible week to week with an eye on the future.

Scott knows a flag is not in the offing for the Cats this season, or next, but a critical mass of players with age and game experience on their side could do damage in 2017.

The Giants have bounced back from a form slump to win their past two games and Geelong showed glimpses of form to beat the Western Bulldogs last weekend.

Interestingly, this is a battle between the most and least accurate teams. Geelong is ranked first at almost 54 per cent, while the Giants are 18th at 46 per cent.

The Giants are undefeated from two games at StarTrack Oval this season, while the Cats travel to Canberra for the first time since 2006 after losing twice to North Melbourne in the national capital.

Scott acknowledged the challenge of playing in unknown territory.

“It’s going to be a different environment,“ he said.

“Sometimes games in Canberra can feel a long way away from AFL footy at the MCG with 80,000 people.

“It’s going to be different but that’ll be a good step in our development as well, to take a professional approach to the game irrespective of the conditions, the supporters or how cold it is, just get out there and get the job done.”

Scott said the Giants were a threat to the Cats despite still undergoing development.

“Their midfield is still really strong, really hard runners, use the ball well and when they get the game on their terms they can score really quickly.

“They’re still developing in some key positions of the game but, having said that, their two power forwards are already damaging players.

“It would be a big mistake for us to go into the game thinking they’ve got some players still developing and we might have a physical edge.”

Cannons aimed at Warriors in fight for NPL survival

By JOSIP ZILIC WITH two wins in a row for the first time this season, North Geelong Warriors is preparing for the fight of its life in the NPL. Opponent Oakleigh Cannons is hard to read but down on form from its midyear resurgence. Oakleigh’s frustrating patch yielded just two points from the last five matches.

But the Cannons have still shown what their capability with wins against South Melbourne and Melbourne Knights.

North Geelong’s recent run featured a disciplined midfield and a stable defence. The consequent increase in confidence has increased scoring opportunities, which were amiss earlier in the season.

In Saturday’s 1-0 win over Northcote the Warriors took command of the midfield, with Vito Cichello orchestrating the home side’s moves.

As soon as the Warriors found their rhythm they turned possession into chances, most notably Mark

Paleka’s driving shot at the near post, which Christopher Theodoridis finger-tipped away.

Moments later Reardo Luka tore past his opponent to drive a low, hard shot into the goal. The ball ricocheted a couple of times but failed to escape the keeper’s grip.

The pressure continued from the home side in the second half. Michael Anderson was on the end of a Chichello move at the 72nd minute, pushing Juso Julardzija past two players before he opened it up for Anderson to slot neatly and give the Warriors their second win in as many weeks.

Coach Micky Colina was delighted but still wary of the mission ahead.

“I’m happy for the lads, they got what they deserved,” he said.

“We’ve ticked off a couple of wins but we know what awaits us and we need to fight for our survival.”

The Warriors play Oakleigh on Sunday at Jack Edwards Reserve, Oakleigh. Kick-off is at 5:45pm.

LIGHT north winds made Sunday ideal for spinning up Australian salmon to just over 2kg along the coast.

Rock platforms and beaches surrounding Lorne produced fish on 25g slugs, with anglers finding that the larger fish usually took lures within the first few metres of their retrieve.

The Barwon River Estuary had huge tidal movement last weekend, making angling challenging but salmon and silver trevally were still landed. Pippies baited on a running sinker rig did the trick during the run-in tide.

The Thunderbolt section produced mulloway on fresh squid baits or live mullet. Some of the mulloway reached 85cm, giving anglers a run for their money.

Reasonable numbers of squid were taken around Queenscliff’s Bell Reef in a good sign of things to come. August traditionally has a run of large squid gather over the nearby reef and grass patches ahead of spawning.

Port Fairy hosted an influx of anglers on Sunday as they made the most of the fading tuna season.

Casting stick baits such as Storm So Run Minnows in 48m to 52m caught southern bluefin to 15kg.

Among the fleet were Mat and Ray Alsop and Dylan Pace, who had little trouble locating and boating tuna. They said the fish responded extremely well to stick bait lures cast into surface commotion, with Dylan noting that the tuna seemed still focused on chasing small bait, which can make them hard to tempt.

Also down the western district, Trent Schiller fished the Hopkins River for bream again. Trent walked the banks high up the estuary casting soft plastics for fish to 37cm.

Lake Purrumbete was a hot spot for brown trout, with anglers taking 2kg fish on trolled lures or mudeyes suspend under floats. Trolling the east bank weed beds at first light resulted in browns and rainbow trout along with the odd Chinook salmon to 1.2kg The Queen’s Park section of the Barwon River produced carp to 6kg. Ever-reliable corn kernels on a lightly weighted running sinker rig got the job done. Next week should be good for salmon along local surf beaches. The rock platforms either side of Lorne will also be worth fishing on the run-in tide.

Freshwater anglers should consider a trip to Lake Wendouree or trying for carp in the Barwon River.
