THE Southern Downs has had some notable allocations in this year’s Queensland budget, but Mayor Peter Blundell is not convinced.

Warwick will receive $9.6 million towards the redevelopment of the East Warwick power substation, $2 million over two years will go towards upgrading the Hermitage Research Facility, and Stanthorpe will receive a $1 million upgrade for the Glen Niven Dam. Although there were cash injections into the area, Mayor Blundell believes there could have been more.

“While it was very pleasing to see the $9.6 million allocated for the substation upgrade, the only other infrastructure project to receive recognition was Glen Niven Dam. There are other infrastructure projects that would benefit this community significantly, for instance a reinstatement of funding arrangements by the State Government of the Smaller Communities Assistance Program would allow council to significantly upgrade and improve water and wastewater infrastructure,” he said.

“We would also like to see funding for the extension of the Warwick Drag Strip, and we would certainly support funding being allocated for other infrastructure including the upgrading of the Warwick Hospital.”

Mayor Blundell is most interested in how the $19 million for public housing will be spent.

When dogs attack

THE East Warwick power substation will receive $9.6 million towards its redevelopment as part of the 2015-2016 Queensland budget.

The $33.4 million project commenced last year and came amid calls for it to be updated to meet the future requirement of the region.

Mayor Peter Blundell said it would benefit the community. “It’s very pleasing to see the commitment of the $9.6 million for completion of the upgrade of the substation. This should mean greater reliability and some increased capacity for power across a significant portion of the region,� he said.

“The substation has been in operation since 1954 and upgrades have occurred previously. As a result of these upgrades, there has been a demonstrable improvement in power reticulation, reliability and uniformity, and this upgrade will, no doubt, deliver further improvements along these lines.�

The new substation was energised for the first time on Thursday with all five new feeder lines successful.

Rod Rehbein from Ergon Energy said the entire process was still on track to be completed in the first quarter of 2016. “It will supply to about 5000 people. It’s a staged process and (last week) the first customers were energised through it,� he said.

However, the council has said that under privacy laws they could not reveal the name of the dog owners, leaving Mr Rowley almost $100 out of pocket with no way of getting it back.

A response from the council reported that the two huskies were immediately rounded up

by Animal Control staff after the incident and taken to the pound where they were then rehomed outside the Southern Downs region.

Mr Rowley said he was already struggling to pay his bills and had no faith in the local council after the recent announcement of the four per cent rate rise. The elderly are expected to be the hardest hit, expected to fork out almost an extra $400 a year under the new rate rises.

A MAN has been left almost $100 out of pocket after being attacked by stray dogs and the council will do nothing to help him.

Warwick retiree Craig Rowley had just left the Warwick library and was walking near the church on Grafton Street with his hearing dog Hank last month when they were attacked by two stray huskies. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was minding my own business and these dogs just shot out from nowhere. They sniffed around Hank, who was on a lead, then attacked. Knocked me to the ground and latched onto Hank,â&#x20AC;? Mr Rowley said.

Mr Rowley was knocked to the ground in the attack when one of the huskies attacked his leg, aggravating a lower back injury. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were both in shock. It was awful. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll never forget it,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Rowley said.

People noticed what was happening and helped the pair. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They would have killed him, but some people saw and surrounded us and helped.â&#x20AC;?

Luckily it did not break the skin but the dog still had to be taken to the vet who charged $95, and Mr Rowley thought that he would be entitled to some type of reimbursement.

He contacted the council who reviewed his case and declared that it was not liable for what happened. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was nearly killed by those bloody huskies. Imagine if it were a child they attacked?â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m entitled to get that money somewhere. I just want the dog ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s name.â&#x20AC;?

Massage parlour assault ON Monday a 25-year-old Talgai man was charged with one count of sexual assault at a massage therapy business in Warwick.

It is alleged the man indecently assaulted a female customer during the massage. Police investigations are still continuing.

He will appear in Warwick’s Magistrates' Court on 4 August.

By DANE LILLINGSTONE WARWICK State High School’s Mount Gordon Flexi-Campus continues to be a success three years after its inception, and they now want to give back to the community by having a food donation drive for local charities.

Starting in mid-2012 with 15 boys as a part of Warwick State High School, the program is still going strong with teacher Mark Fowler there from the beginning.

“What we teach them is always the same. It’s the responsibility. You’re responsible for your own behaviour, your own attitude,” he said.

The campus is a program for kids who have had difficulty assimilating the regular high school curriculum and have instead been moved to the program where there is an emphasis on hands-on and real world skills with the intention of preparing them for the workforce.

One day a week, some of the kids undertake work experience with local businesses and Mr Fowler said they were always looking for opportunities to get the boys working with and for the community.

“We wanna give back, that’s the key to it, that’s why we go to the dementia ward and we play games with them and talk to them. It’s very interesting to see (the boys) when they realise that some of these people might not see next week, they don’t understand to start with. Then they realise,” he said.

Currently, a few of the boys work in a variety of jobs in the community with one working for the NRL helping run sports carnivals.

Serious crash in Maryvale POLICE are appealing for witnesses to come forward after a car left the road at Maryvale and hit a street sign.

The incident occurred in Maryvale on the Cunningham Highway around 2.55pm last Thursday. The Ford sedan was travelling north on the highway when it hit the street sign, impaling the front windscreen.

A 45-year-old woman was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries while a 44-year-old woman was transported to Warwick Base Hospital for observation.

FARMERS in the Southern Downs area will be a little concerned after Indonesia announced that they will be cutting their Australian livestock permits drastically.

Indonesia announced they will only allocate 50,000 permits for live cattle imports for the July to September quarter, a significant slashing of the 250,000 for the quarter just gone. It was also a big drop from the 180,000 in the same quarter last year.

The announcement came as a surprise, and has been the subject of speculation as to why it happened.

Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said in a statement “it is disappointing to hear of the change in permit numbers, it’s something I hope

we can rectify soon.”

“Obviously, we have to work now if we go down to a quota of 50,000 head, it’s my responsibility to try to find an alternative route venue for those cattle,” he said.

Mr Joyce believes the solution is in changing the system.

“We have to work for annual quotas rather than quarterly quotas. I think the annual quotas give us more resilience and more predictability.

The quarterly system brings a form of uncertainty, uncertainty in price in Jakarta and uncertainty in supply in Australia,” he said.

There have been suggestions the reduction could be attributed to diplomatic tensions between the two countries having experienced a turbulent relationship in recent times.

Cut the toll on farms Casey’s tips

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THERE is currently estimated to be around one death per week on our nation’s farms.

This week is National Farm Safety Week and the theme is ‘safe farms are productive farms.’

It is an opportunity for discussion, and thought to be had by farmers, agricultural workers and anyone involved in primary industry on making occupational safety part of their workplace

and family culture.

Gordon Gregory, CEO of the National Rural Health Alliance (NRHA), said more could be done to increase safety on our farms.

“Fatalities on farms are almost always avoidable. The common-sense approach to safety on farms must be embedded in people’s thinking and behaviour - not pursued reluctantly as something that just has to be done.

And appreciating that a safe farm is also a more productive one should help

with this,” he said.

There have been 24 deaths reported on Australian farms this year.

Farm Safety Week promotes the common-sense approach.

There has been a significant reduction in farm fatalities over the last 20 years. In 1994, the number was 146 and this has been cut to 54 in 2014 which equates to around one per week.

Awards recognise businesses at their best

The M.J. Smith Group of Woodenbong were among the major awards winners at the event organised by Kyogle and District Chamber of Commerce.

The dinner celebrating excellence in business in the Kyogle Local Government Area was held at the Kyogle Bowling Club.

Almost 200 people, representing and supporting local small businesses attended the night.

Woodenbong businesses entered in two categories of the nine options.

The Woodenbong Driveway and Woodenbong Hotel were nominated in the Best Small Business award while Michael Smith of the M.J. Smith Group nominated in the best large business.

It was a big night for businesses outside of the Kyogle town-ship led by Woodenbong’s M.J. Smith Group, who won best large business award while Louisa’s Fine Foods of Bonalbo took out the Community Service Award.

Stanthorpe cops stop drug haul TWO men have been charged following the discovery of cannabis and methamphetamine at a traffic stop in Stanthorpe last week.

It was alleged that they were found around midday last Saturday after the vehicle was stopped as a part of a RBT operation on the New England Highway.

A search conducted on the car revealed a quantity of dangerous drugs with an estimated value of $45,000.

Police suspect the men had been transporting the drugs from New South Wales to Brisbane.

Both a 49-year-old man from Bethania and a 37-year-old man were each charged with two counts of possessing dangerous drugs, and one count of possessing anything for use in the commission of a crime.

Both men are due to appear in Stanthorpe’s Magistrates’ Court on 23 September.

A 62-YEAR-OLD man has spent the night in freezing conditions after crashing his bike and coming to a stop at the bottom of a 10-metre embankment.

Peter Bowring was originally reported missing last Thursday after last being seen at Queen Mary Falls carpark near Killarney. He was then located on Friday afternoon at the bottom of an embankment off Spring Creek Road.

He was rescued around 2pm on Friday by Queensland Fire and Rescue officers where he was then transported to Warwick hospital. He was treated for mild hypothermia and had suffered a fractured right leg.

To turn on the TV news is to see murders, violence and endless cruelty to children on a daily basis. People climb great heights and fall off, swim with sharks and are eaten, so much of gross stupidity that in the olden days was simply seen as showing off!!

Hospitals will never be able to house all of avoidable mishaps. However there came to this writer the answer to stop domestic violence in the last Sunday Mail of 12 July. Never could someone of my generation be so sickened by knowledge of what was titled “Generation Porn”.

Curiosity forced me to investigate; however a little was all I could manage to read. But that is the breeding ground for domestic violence! The ghastly internet encourages demeaning and often violent attitude towards women. Having no words

to describe the damage being done to women, I must repeat the words written as warning on the cover page, “Experts warn that generation porn is the number one public health issue of the 21st century”. Who will then not agree with this writer that computers are the devil’s own invention!

Recycling, Reusing I MYSELF have grave concerns for this SDRC. I moved to Killarney 1 January, 2010, after purchasing my property in May, 2009. You see I had to go away and earn money for the rates due here in August as there is no work for me here for me and many others who moved here from their small businesses on the East Coast.

My rates included a rate for infrastructure for the water to be taken away? The residents of Killarney were informed that it would take three

years to pay off. That was five years ago. We the people want to know why we still pay this.

I ask this SDRC to be accountable for the “water waste” costs that are already paid. Where the money goes from the expensive fluoride, e.g. I cannot accept the explanation given by the CEO. Why does forgetful Mayor get paid $120,000, what does he do besides forget? No-one gets paid that much. I smell many rats. Why don’t we have the bin pick up, halved? Why are there no recycle bins around Warwick and surrounds, especially now that we are a Tourist Destination? We are 30 years behind. Why are our rates so expensive?

Why can’t this council think up solutions?

Only way forward THE Abbott regime and Barnaby Joyce are keen to help the Aussie farmer; or so it appears. They have grand plans to build dams, especially in the

north. But will this be the panacea they think it to be? What good are these initiatives while we are beholding to free trade agreements that dictate as to what we can and cannot do?

Southern farmers are having trouble selling their crops and some are even ploughing them into the ground. Fruit orchards are disappearing rapidly from Queensland’s Granite Belt because of poor markets and prices paid that don’t meet their costs. Supermarket chains are responsible for some of the take-it-or-leave-it prices.

Markets are heavily controlled for the benefit of the buyers, but Australia could easily supply all its food products instead of the imports that now occur. But we don’t have an administration that wants self-sufficiency.

Things need to change dramatically if we are not to starve if the day comes when imports are stopped because of war or other reasons.

IT finally happened. After all the false starts, it finally snowed in Queensland.

Eukey, Stanthorpe and surrounding areas along the Granite Belt woke up to a winter wonderland last week with 8 centimetres of snow recorded in the region. It was the biggest snowfall in Stanthorpe since 1984 and an extremely rare occurrence in Queensland.

It was reported that it started about midnight last Friday and continued on to the early hours of the morning. It covered trees, cars, roads and left enough behind for kids to build snowmen and have snowball fights.

Tourists flocked to the area and kids stood about starry eyed as many witnessed their first every experience with snow.

Water charge pain as rates rise again

By DANE LILLINGSTONE WATER prices have risen as a part of the Southern Downs Regional Councils ongoing water transition in what will mark the second continuous year of rises.

Allora is going to be the hardest hit, paying around $2 more a week per 20mm of water access while Warwick will be the least affected, forking out an extra $0.60 a week.

Mayor Peter Blundell said the provision of high quality water came with challenges.

“Council has introduced changes to the water pricing structure through which we’re seeking to achieve a number of objectives,” he said.

“Firstly, council must be able to generate sufficient revenue to allow the water business to finance its functions.

“We need to ensure prices are cost-reflective, meaning our prices cover the full cost of providing a water service, and that customers in similar locations pay similar prices.

“We’re also seeking to ensure a

level of equity between the different customer classes, with equal charges for equal services, but also having consideration of charges based on the ability to pay,” he said.

The transition will continue with the current 10 water supply areas shifting to two supply areas. It began in 2014/’15 and will continue through the 2015/’16 and 2016/’17 financial years.

“Supply area one will cover areas receiving fully treated water including Allora, Warwick, Yangan, Killarney, Stanthorpe and Wallan-

garra,” Mayor Blundell said.

“Supply area two will encompass all partially treated water supply areas including Dalveen, Karara, Leyburn and Pratten.”

Mayor Blundell also said the rises would be different in certain areas.

“As a result of this transitional period, water charges for some areas will increase by more and some areas will increase by less than the 10 per cent figure promoted in the council’s 2015/’16 budget,” he said.

However, the Invasive Species Council has warned that the Federal Government will need to step up their effort or risk ongoing loss and extinction.

Invasive Species Council CEO Andrew Cox said “invasive species account for twothirds of all listed threats to our native plants and animals but not enough is being done to deal with these or the next wave of invasive threats.”

“We desperately need a national body to identify invasive threats to our native plants and animals, draw up contingency plans and implement rapid responses to eradicate them,” Mr Cox said.

“Threat reduction at the national level has largely stalled.

Comprehensive response plans to invasive threats to our plants and animals are either non-existent or have been poorly implemented.”

His comments came from the Threatened Species Summit held in Melbourne last week.

Cracker of a bonfire night

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE Killarney Bonfire Night has lit up the sky once more with an amazing display of pyrotechnics, fire drums and of course the bonfire.

Numbers skyrocketed from last year’s attendance while the event also served as a fund-raiser for Killarney Memorial Age Care.

The unique fire drum competition invites competitors to create art pieces out of 44 gallon drums that they cut up, weld and transform however they please.

Bill Shelton won the 44 Gallon Drum competition with his Monsters in a Barrel piece and Ian Rowling won the Popularity Prize for his Titanic piece.

Bruce Halter provided the live entertainment, while the fireworks were sponsored by the Southern Downs Regional Council and done by local Brian Weeks but of course the main event was the giant bonfire.

Organisers of the event have asked everyone who came to the event to thank the Southern Downs Regional Council for their support.

When the assets of a deceased estate are distributed, a special rule applies that allows any capital gain or loss made on a CGT asset to be disregarded if the asset passes to the executor, to a beneficiary or from the executor to a beneficiary.

However, if an executor sells an asset of the deceased estate and then distributes the proceeds to the beneficiaries, the sale is subject to the normal rules and CGT applies.

When a person dies, their superannuation is paid to their beneficiaries, either directly or as part of their estate.

Lump sum death benefits paid to dependants are generally tax free. The taxation of lump sum death benefits paid to non-dependants and death benefit income streams depend on a number of factors.

A death benefit termination payment is an employment termination payment (ETP) made by an employer after the death of an employee. How the payment is taxed depends on whether or not the beneficiary is a dependant of the deceased person, and the total amount of payments received.

“Our previous work The Harbinger was a dark puppetry show for adults, using huge physical puppets. Argus, in contrast, is full of humour and imagination and is as easily accessible to adults as it is to kids.”

Aside from the parents enjoying it, Paine also feels imaginative theatre is an important experience for children: “Puppetry is a scarce art form, even in metropolitan areas,” he said.

To bring Argus to regional spaces is a great privilege. For children, it helps spark their imagination and lets loose their creativity.”

Set upon a rotating tabletop of household props, Argus jumps and flows with the ebb of the puppeteers’ hands: it is a beautiful and otherworldly glimpse into the disappearing art of puppeteering, a craft which Dead Puppet Society have travelled the globe in pursuit of furthering.

After residencies with New York’s New Victory Theatre and the Queensland Theatre

Company and a stint as the proteges of Handspring Theatre Company, the creators of War Horse and renown as the world pinnacle of the art of puppetry, Dead Puppet Society have returned to Australia to share this wonderful production.

Argus premiered at the Brisbane Powerhouse and has enjoyed sold-out performances at La Boit theatre, during which ABC Open’s Ben Tupas got to see it.

“We’re super lucky to have this coming to Toowoomba. I brought my kids along to the first incarnation of this show in Brisbane and it’s a phenomenally creative and compact show which turns puppetry as you know it on its head,” Tupas states.

THE second Woodenbong Golf Club Billy Cart Derby proved a colourful affair this year.

The event attracted a variety of very different vehicles with the drivers including Batman and St George, complete with sword to slay the Yowie Dragons that are prevalent on the Woodenbong Golf Course where the event was held.

The fun competition is a fund-raiser for the club and attracted more than 20 billy carts and a sizeable audience. The day included an all-day barbecue, cold drinks and coffee.

The winners on the day were Best Presented: Senior: Danny Dickens as Batman, Junior: Nicholas and Beau Edmed. Fastest Time: Senior: Steve Knynewbreut, Junior: Jed Mulcahy. Slalom: Senior: Penny Lee, Junior: Tom Smith.

A great turn out and all times were very close, a great effort by the Flying Pom, The Silver Sea Eagle, The Lee Team and Surfer Man. THE word ‘puppet’ makes you think of marionette strings and colourful felt animals with cartoon personalities propped by silly voices, a concept exclusively for kids.

Until now.

Puppeteer Nicholas Paine of Dead Puppet Society decided to cut the strings from this disappearing art form.

Their production Argus, which comes to Toowoomba as part of the USQ Artsworx season, doesn’t use puppets at all. It just uses the hands of the performers.

“With Argus, we wanted to create a character with infinite possibilities,” Paine said.

“There’s only so much you can do with actors or even physical puppets. By having Argus made of hands, he can do anything we can imagine,” says Paine, Dead Puppet Society’s executive producer.

Argus is a small creature in search of a home and friends to call his own. Made of the hands and the imaginations of the masterful puppeteer company, Argus is a production that is as much for kids as it is for adults, bursting with creativity and a strikingly innovative approach to storytelling

AS THE business end of the season draws closer, the cream continues to rise to the top of the NRL competition and the Broncos and Cowboys are sitting comfortably at the top of the NRL table.

The Brisbane Broncos posted another healthy win over the Tigers in round 19, and the wins ensure they hold on to their two-point lead at the top of the ladder. With their dominant performance at Brookvale on Monday night, the Cowboys remain in second place. The Queensland teams now have a healthy buffer over the Roosters. The Rabbitohs nudged their way into the top four on the back of a win over the Dragons.

At a quick glance, results in round 20 look reasonably clear cut which could mean we are in for some upsets.

The Broncos are back at Suncorp on Friday night to host the hapless Titans. Brisbane led by Justin Hodges is playing outstanding football off the back of their exciting halves combination of Hunt and Milford and their forward pack which has surprised many. In stark contrast, the Titans have been on shaky ground since the start of the season. After the DCE debacle, they appear to have imploded on the field. If Brisbane comes to this game with their mind on the job, the result could be a cricket score.

Anything less would be close to the upset of the season.

The Tigers were outclassed at Suncorp on Sunday, and the job doesn’t get any easier when they host the Roosters on Friday night at ANZ. The tri colours made it five on the trot handing the Warriors an old-fashioned hiding in round 19.

Based on the performances of these sides last week, you cannot go past the Roosters who continue to firm as premiership favourites.

On Saturday, the wounded Warriors return to Mt Smart Stadium where they will host the Sea Eagles.

The Warriors performance against the Roosters was soft. They have come under fire from their fans and the press across the ditch. The Warriors are now in a traffic jam at the bottom of the eight and must treat every game as a semi-final if they are to feature in the finals.

Another tough game for tipsters is the clash between the Dogs and the Sharks. All the momentum will be with the home side as they return once again to Belmore.

The Bulldogs are predicted to figure dominantly in the finals and they certainly look like they will be a force to be reckoned with, however this is a danger game for them. Round 20 draws to a close with what looks to be a real mismatch with the highflying Cowboys hosting the Eels. Drama never seems far from the Parramatta door. Now they are embroiled in a contract and release dispute with Chris Sandow.

The Cowboys are in a great position this season to stage a challenge for the premiership and look to be keeping a lid on their emotions.

They are playing top-shelf football, and if they remain focused this week will add another two points to the piggy bank.

WHAT a week it has been. The extreme weather conditions were worth it when Stanthorpians woke or were woken in the early hours of Friday morning to a magical blanket of snow.

Snow it seems puts a smile on faces.

Something else that puts a smile on faces is Aussie success - and there was that in spades over the past week.

I doubt I have ever seen anything as inspirational as the win of Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth in the Davis Cup tie in Darwin. I guess we all hope that someone takes a couple of spoilt “we deserve it all brats” to a quiet place and shows them how you should represent yourself and your country when you are playing not just tennis but any sport. Aussie fans love larrikins but they grow intolerant of knobs quickly.

What we will never grow intolerant of is watching Steve Smith pummel the Poms. He has the face of a cherub and the iron will of a prizefighter, and while the Pommies were determined to undermine his confidence and get under his skin he merely smashed them from one end of Lords to the other - helped along the way by an outstanding Australian batting line-up.

Mitch Johnson of course is a name that sends quivers down the backbone of the Pommie team and there will be some no doubt suffering permanent scarring at the crease as a result of the performance of Johnson’s and his cohorts in one of the most outstanding victories I can recall in Australian cricket.

The Broncos and Cowboys continue on the carousel of success in the NRL picking up from where the Queenslanders left off. And what of the formerly much maligned Wallabies. How good was their win.

For those lucky enough to be at Suncorp on Friday night to see Liverpool play the Roar the emotion of “You’ll never walk alone will probably stay with you for life". The Stanthorpe United crew were there to soak up the atmosphere and watch a super team and a team of superstars. Front and centre was Warwick junior soccer player Hayden Gaske who partnered with Liverpool player number 27 Divock Origin for the official introductions and anthem. A memory he will treasure forever.

But the highlight of the week must be Mick Fanning’s amazing brush with a great white.

Wow. Now that is a memory he will find hard to erase, as will the rest of us. We will all look at surfers differently after that incident, I am sure.

Quote of the week goes to the wit who came up with the line that “I expected Paul Gallen to pop up beside Fanning and the shark to complain to the referee.”

- Casey GASKE ANOTHER AUSSIE TO WATCH AUSTRALIAN golfers have always been a force to be reckoned with on the world stage and at the moment there are an increasing number making their mark in major competitions. While we have all become familiar with the exploits of Jason Day and Adam Scott another player shot to prominence in the final round of the British Open - Marc Leishman.

Hoping to emulate the success of these players is a young Queenslander Ryan Gaske who recently took the opportunity to spend time with family in Stanthorpe while on summer break from college in the USA. Gaske is making quite a name for himself on the US college scene - it is a pathway he hopes will lead him to a successful career as a professional golfer.

Gaske played the Stanthorpe course two weeks ago and was impressed with not only on the course but also in two of Stanthorpe’s junior golfers. Gaske spent time with Dylan Barrclough

We hope to be hearing the name Ryan Gaske on the world stage shortly.

Hayden Gaske got a centre stage seat at the Liverpool Roar game at Suncorp on Friday night. and Hannah Reeves, giving them some tips on how they could proceed if they are hoping to make a career of golf.

The Brisbane born 20 year old - who has been a keen golfer since picking up the clubs at the age of eight - had four top-five finishes in six college tournaments this year and won the Mesa Invitational with rounds of 65 and 69 (eight under par).

Since returning home to Australia, Gaske’s clubs have not been idle. He played in the Wayne Grady Cup at Virginia making eight birdies for the day and took the runner-up honours with 7168-139.

“I have been able to reduce my handicap from +1 to +4 since returning home,” he said.

Figures beyond the wildest imagination of we mere hackers.

Two years ago Gaske secured a scholarship to Eastern Arizona College and says he has enjoyed the experience of playing for EAC. The young Queenslander has put together an impressive golfing resume.

This year he successfully defended his Arizona Regional Title, was voted Golfer of the Year for the Arizona State Conference and was named Male Athlete of the Year at Eastern Arizona College.

He was the first EAC golfer to be selected First Team All-American and finished the season ranked third in the nation, first in Region 1 of the NJCAA. He has also been invited to play in the 2015 Patriot All America Tournament in December.

Gaske says one his biggest thrills since moving to America was playing Colonial Crowne Invitational with Rod Pampling after the Aussie missed the cut in the main tournament.

After graduating with high honours from EAC he plans to continue his golf and academic career at Gonzaga in Washington.

It was one university that wasn’t on this Brisbane boy’s radar.

“It’s so far north and I don’t like the cold but they saw me play at nationals last year, the coach got in contact, and so I said yes. It was pretty cool,” Gaske said.

He will study a major in sports management with a minor in journalism, but his heart is on the green.

“I want to become a professional, but if I have to fall back on something, I’ll fall back on that and probably enjoy it,” Gaske said.

For now, he’s taking it one day at a time but urged our Stanthorpe youngsters to follow their dreams.

SNOW - NO FOOTBALL BUT YES LEAGUE THE white powdery stuff was magical but it caused problems for some sports events in Stanthorpe last weekend. While the Rugby League

games were unaffected, Football Stanthorpe was not as fortunate. Amid concerns for player safety, fixture matches and a junior carnival were cancelled after the fields were drenched once the heavy snowfall melted.

On the Rugby League scene, the Stanthorpe Gremlins were scheduled to play in Killarney and the game was unaffected by the snow conditions.

Stanthorpe had another decisive win over the Cutters, who are struggling to put a team on the paddock and began the game with only one player on the bench.

Injuries to several key players during the game saw the Cutters reduced to 11 players as Stanthorpe scored another easy 58-12 win.

In the Ladies League Tag, the Killarney girls put it to the visitors and the score was eight-all at half time before the experience of the Stanthorpe girls proved a winner. The final score in that game 18-8.

Tenterfield and Wallangarra went head to head in Tenterfield in spite of the unusual weather events earlier in the week. The Tigers notched up another win and look to be the team gaining momentum as the regular fixtures draw to a close.

With a more consistent line-up and several players back from injury, the Tigers are closer to a home semi-final.

The Tigers stepped out in stripes of another colour last weekend wearing special blue jerseys in an awareness and fund-raising day for beyondblue. Over $2500 was raised for the charity after jerseys were auctioned following the game.

The Tenterfield Ladies continued on their winning way with a comprehensive 24-0 victory over the Ramettes. The Tenterfield girls remain undefeated in their two seasons of Ladies League Tag and are one of the highlights of the BRL competition.

A reserve grade nine-a-side game resulted in another win for Tenterfield (50-18) making it a clean sweep for the Tigers.

SNOW COVERED OVALS IN STANTHORPE TOUGH WIN FOR BROWN THREE Summit representatives played in the hotly contested Presidents SDMDBA Singles at the Southern Cross Club in Warwick. All played well but only four players progressed to the knockout round at Clifton on Sunday. In the first game on Sunday, Stanthorpe bowler Brian Brown defeated David Scotney by only a few shots. In the other rubber, Dan Sullivan progressed to the final after defeating Trevor Wright in another tight game.

The final was a tough game but it was Stanthorpe bowler Brian Brown who got the upper hand defeating Dan Sullivan 25-23 to win the title. The standard of bowls throughout the whole competition was of a high level.

Much of the talk on Saturday at the social

game at the Summit centred around the fall of the white stuff. This weekend the focus is sure to be on the actual bowls. Saturday there will be the normal social competition, while Sunday is a $300 trophy day. Please confirm your intention to play with the club.

WATTLES WIN TOUGH GAME WATTLES hold on to their share of the top of the TRL table after a nailbiting win over Valleys at Platz Oval on Saturday.

Valleys came from 36-14 down to almost snatch the game from the home side in a late charge, Corey Blades had an outstanding game for the Warriors looking dangerous with every touch.

Michael Purcell showed his class scoring two tries the first of which highlighted his speed and agility.

In other grades Wattles were successful in reserve grade 28-22 but were defeated 82-10 in under-18s. In the C Grade game Millmerran Rams continue to dominate, winning 60-nil.

PERFECT CONDITIONS BUT STILL PATCHES OF SNOW IT was a truly unique experience for Stanthorpe golfers who played the course on Saturday with patches of ice still laying on the fairways from the snowfall the previous day. In the perfect conditions on Saturday things could not have been better for a round of golf.

David Burgess revelled in the conditions and was the run-away winner in the single stableford.

He completed the round with a total score of 43 points - out in 21 and back in 22. Rob Reeves was his nearest rival. He finished six points back on 37 to claim the runner-up spot.

Mark McCosker had best tee shot at 3/12 and Chris Fittock at 17 to claim the balls on offer for pin shots. Robert Rigg (Toowoomba GC) picked up the pro-pin at 1/10, Ian Harvey at 5/14 and Mark McCosker again at 9/18. Rundown for the men went to Max Hunter (36), Stephen Kay (36) and Ian Pickering (36). It was great to see Cameron Turner on the fairways for a round of golf - he still hits the ball a mile.

Kay Webb took out the ladies' event with a score of 39 points. She finished well ahead of runner-up Linda Kelly (31). Kelly also had best approach for the ladies at 17. Madeline Jarman took a ball in the ladies’ rundown.

This Saturday, club president Stephen Kay is sponsoring a medley 4BBB stableford. It is a shotgun start at 11.45am with registration by 11.30am. Aaron Simmers and Bob Watts are in the starter’s box. Have you volunteered to take a turn in the starter’s box yet?

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CAMP FOR JUNIOR PLAYERS THE QRL and NRL will be holding a Junior Rugby League Mod Camp at Gatton in September.

The camp which will be held at the USQ Campus in Gatton will run from September 28-30 and is designed for juniors from 10-12 years of age.

IDEAL CONDITIONS FOR BACKWOODMANSHIP CONDITIONS were cool and sunny on Sunday just right for a bit of backwoodsmanship with the monthly hunting competition on at the Inglewood SSAA. Bear, wolf, elk and turkey were but part of the menu for the backwoods peoples day of fun.

The winner this month, Stephanie Dudgeon, showed her turkey gobbling expertise to clinch the title from second placed Ray Dudgeon. Phil Neal finished in third spot ahead of Scruffy Morgan who took out fourth spot.

This weekend there is a full program of pistol competitions on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

A rotisseried pig is on the menu for a free lunch to be enjoyed as the club conducts the annual general meeting on Sunday.

In the middle of some rather extreme weather conditions, players had a great day on Wednesday pre-snow for Hoop Runners Golf Croquet.

In the first game of the day - first to 13 triples

the final score was 13-7. Bill Golding top scored on the winning team with six hoops. Elaine Brown bagged a hoop in one.

A short first-to-seven game followed. The result was another close score of 7-5.

LAST CHANCE FOR QLD CRICKET CLUBS TO PITCH FOR FUNDING COMMBANK Cricket Club is helping local clubs score extra funds with a two-year sponsorship worth $2000 each year - and Queensland cricket clubs have just a few weeks left to apply for a CommBank Cricket Club sponsorship as applications draw to a close.

This is the first time clubs have been able apply for a two-year sponsorship deal from CommBank, In addition to financial support, clubs will also receive new cricket gear, such as training balls and stumps, and other equipment, such as shade marquees and ground markers, to use on game days.

Ellyse Perry, Australian Test cricketer and CommBank Cricket Club ambassador, believes

local cricket clubs are essential in supporting and nurturing players at all levels of the game.

“I owe so much to the support and guidance I received from my local cricket club when I was first starting out but we often forget that grassroots clubs need our help in return. This sponsorship program from the CommBank Cricket Club will make a big difference to clubs in need, so they can continue the great work they do within their local communities,” she said.

The new two-year sponsorship initiative is part of CommBank’s long-term commitment to supporting cricket at all levels - from the national men’s and women’s teams, to the grassroots clubs, to the fans of the game. CommBank has invested over $1.5 million in local cricket clubs over the past four years, and has reached a third of all clubs across Australia with their support and grant packages.

SOUTHERN CROSS BOWLS TODAY, Thursday 23 July, will be our Cool Scarves and Silly Socks bowls day. This event is part of Jumpers 'n' Jazz week celebrations and anyone, both ladies and men are welcome to come along and enjoy a game of bowls. We will start off with a sausage sizzle at noon and play at 1pm. It would be appreciated if your names can be in by noon. There are trophies for winners and runners up also a multi-draw raffle. Don’t forget to put on your crazy scarf and bright socks.

Our visit in from the Downs Diggers this coming Saturday July 25 has been cancelled so there will now be social mixed bowls only starting at 1pm.

There will be no social bowls on Saturday as we have Venus and Vic’s sponsored day on Sunday. Play will start at 1pm with names in by 12.30pm. Venus and Vic are providing trophies for both winners and runners-up, as well as raffle prizes and afternoon tea. Please make every effort to attend to show your appreciation for their generous gesture and to support your club.

Visitors will be made very welcome.
