Wrapped up thinking is outside of the box THE Cranbourne Community Theatre came alive with the help of a few cardboard boxes and some bubblewrap. As part of the City of Caseyâs Winter Arts Festival childrenâs play Bubblewrap and Boxes entertained families over the school holidays. Young and old were called up for a sneak peak photo with performers and acrobats outside the theatre before being awakened to the strange and dusty lost mail room created on stage. The nowhere land provided the perfect home for homeless parcels and undeliverable letters to live and let childrenâs imaginations run wild at the theatre.

Iâm getting myself trained to do it at home. âIn the next few weeks Iâll be doing it at home in the night time, so it wonât hinder my daytime routine.â His current dialysis sessions take five hours. âAt home you can do it in eight hours and the longer you can do dialysis the better it is for you,â he said.

Mr Perera said the condition didnât affect his ability to serve the community. âI havenât taken any extra responsibility in the caucus,â he said. He said he regularly doorknocked and called constituents to keep abreast of local issues â all while waiting for the transplant call. âThey donât put a time limit. It could be two years, it could be three, five. It depends on availability,â he said. âMy wife has put her hand up but sheâs not a match.â

But sheâs on a âpairingâ list. âEvery six months the transplant unit at Monash go through their list and work out which donor suits which recipient,â Mr Perera said. âThey are people who are happy to donate a kidney to somebody else and in return have their recipient take a kidney. âIf someoneâs kidney is suitable for me, and if my wifeâs kidney is suitable for the nominated person of that donor, then it will go ahead. âThey tend to do it on the same day otherwise somebody could back out!â

CRANBOURNE MP Jude Perera needs a kidney. A transplant the 62-year-old received five years ago has failed so he needs regular dialysis to filter his blood â the work his kidney used to do. But heâs vowed to keep serving his community and plans to recontest the seat at the next election. âI was brought up in a political house back in Sri Lanka. I enjoy being in politics â of course the left side of the political spectrum,â he said.
âI like to help out people by representing them in Parliament.â Mr Perera, who moved to Australia with his wife and two children in 1988, unsuccessfully stood for Cranbourne in the 1999 election. He won the seat in 2002 and has held onto it throughout his health battle. âThe diagnosis was chronic kidney disease. Thereâs a long medical term I canât pronounce it,â he said, laughing. âIt was scarring of the kidneys. âMy cousin from Sri Lanka was
