BELINDA Wheeler’s book, A Companion to Australian Aboriginal Literature has reached number one on the Amazon Australian and Oceanian Literary Criticism best seller list.

Ms Wheeler was born and raised in Stanthorpe and moved to the United States in 2001 to further her academic career.

The book was released in August 2013 but last month it managed to

crack the top spot on the Amazon list.

“I was a little surprised that the book made the number one position. Also, it was for the hardcover edition that has a high price point (US$80),” Ms Wheeler said.

The sales for the book have been so strong that a paperback edition will be released on 1 August, and it is already listed as the number one new release in the same category on Amazon.

Her book opened my eyes up to an aspect of Aboriginal life that I was not previously aware, i.e. the Stolen Generations. After completing her book, I started reading as much Aboriginal literature that I could find,” she said.

ALL the talk locally over the last week has been the possibility of snow in the Southern Downs region. Last Friday there were predictions that it could possibly snow in Stanthorpe, that then changed to Tenterfield and ended with some snowfall on Mount Mackenzie. Tourists and weather chasers reportedly flocked to the towns from all corners of Queensland and New South Wales in the hope of catching a glimpse of the snow. Many were left with a hefty petrol bill but there was still something to put a smile on faces.

Southern Queensland and Northern New South Wales are currently in the middle of a cold front as icy weather from the Antarctic creeps north. Stanthorpe was predicted to drop to a low of -4 degrees on Wednesday.

The event was held at O’Mahony’s Hotel from around midday and received a solid turnout from the community.

Library late fees are coming our way LATE fees for overdue library books will be introduced from 1 August. The measure will bring the Southern Downs library services in line with other local government library services.

It’s not all bad news with the Southern Downs Regional Council’s Library Service offering amnesty on late fees until the end of this month.

Council’s manager Community Services, Sheila Stebbings, said the introduction of late return fees were important in encouraging library items to be returned on time.

“Library members have a responsibility to return the items they borrow from the library by the due date so that other members can have access to these items,” she said.

“However, we would like to

give our library members the chance to beat the fee, by returning their overdue items - whether they’re overdue by two days or two years - throughout the month of July without accruing any late fees.”

Ms Stebbings urged any library members with overdue items to return them by the end of the month or face the risk of fines. Warwick, Stanthorpe, Allora and the mobile

library will be enforcing the fees from 1 August.

“So, no matter how late they are, take the opportunity to return your overdue library items for free before the introduction of late return fees in August this year,” Ms Stebbings said.

NEW statistics show the number of flu cases in Australia is up by over 50 per cent on the same time last year.

Minister for Health Sussan Ley said vaccination was the most effective way to protect against the flu, which contributed to over 3000 deaths annually.

“Last year’s flu season was one of the worst on record, and we have already seen a 50 per cent increase or almost 5000 additional cases across Australia so far this year,” Ms Ley said.

“The more people who are vaccinated, the less chance the illness spreads throughout the rest of the community. This is particularly true for those Australians who are ill, vulnerable, pregnant or elderly.

“The message is simple - get your flu shot before the flu gets you this winter,” she said.

Ms Ley reported that 4.5 million doses of flu vaccination had been bought this year under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). That number is 200,000 more than last year.

“The peak period for the flu season is regularly between August and September and with most people usually taking up to three weeks to develop immunity following their flu shot now is the time to go get your flu jab,” Ms Ley said.

“The vaccine not only reduces the chance of getting the flu but it also minimises the severity, complications and hospitalisations if you do.”

There is a reason for this spike in numbers. They are being attributed to a rare double strain change in the vaccine.

Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Baggoley said that the vaccination was a requirement every year regardless of whether you’ve had it previously.

“Each year the vaccine contains three virus strains.

The 2015 vaccine contains new virus strains which are different to last year’s to ensure Australians were protected against the most likely strains,” Prof Baggoley said.

“Flu is highly contagious and spreads easily from person to person, through the air, and on the hands.”

The flu vaccine is free to Australians over 65, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months to five years and 15 and over, pregnant women and anyone aged over six months with certain chronic conditions.

Hendra season here

By DANE LILLINGSTONE IT IS the middle of Hendra season, and that means that every precaution needs to be taken.

Just last month two rural properties in North East Murwillumbah were in lock-down following a suspected Hendra virus outbreak with the death of a 19-year-old gelding stock horse with Hendra-like symptoms.

The horses had not been vaccinated.

Chris Reardon from the Warwick Veterinary Clinic said the cost of the vaccination varied case to case but that it should be seen as a requirement.

“There is a degree of governance on the vet’s behalf. It is important to make sure that when we treat horses

we know, they’re on a registrar, we can rule out the Hendra virus,” he said.

Mr Reardon said the vaccination was particularly important in high risk areas.

“High risk areas are where the Hendra virus has been previously seen and also in areas where horses and humans come into contact,” he said.

It is currently recommended that horses be vaccinated for the Hendra virus twice initially a few weeks apart and then every six months after that.

Winter is primetime for the Hendra virus. It is suspected that the cooler months provide a temperature and humidity that is more suited to the chances of the longer term survival of the virus.

In brief Phone box stunt A 23-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with wilful damage after running into a phone box and dislodging it on Saturday morning.

On 11 July at 1.49am, police observed on CCTV a man running with some speed into the phone box.

The incident occurred on the corner of Palmerin and Victoria streets outside the Horse and Jockey Motel.

Club break-in THE Warwick and District Dirt Bike Club on Old Stanthorpe Road has been broken into.

A number of items were stolen from the club’s canteen where it is believed a window was jimmied open.

The incident occurred sometime between 11 June and 9 July, when it was reported. Nothing has been recovered at this time.

excellent reviews for the book in the academic community as well as the non-academic community. That is important for any book, but it is especially important for someone’s first book.”

From humble beginnings in Stanthorpe to residing half way round the world in South Carolina, Ms Wheeler has not returned home since she left for the United States but admits there are things she misses.

“All my family lives in Australia, so I miss the country a lot.

I also miss really simple things like the sound of a Kookaburra laughing, the sound that the wind makes as it blows through the pine trees on the Darling Downs, or seeing the kangaroos

“We are moving into the old bank, hopefully by the end of the week. We are just trying to get more donations,” he said.

The Killarney and District Historical Society is run by volunteers and survives on donations.

Although the book has been a success, Ms Wheeler is not actually an author; she’s a university professor with three degrees including a PhD in English. Her advice for any would-be writers trying to achieve similar success are not to give up.

Yangan hunts for treasure

By DANE LILLINGSTONE THE inaugural Yangan Treasure Hunt took place on Saturday with 14 cars.

The fund-raising treasure hunt brought the small community together to raise money for BUSHkids, the Yangan Tennis Club and the Yangan and District Progress Association.

Organiser Colin Pope said the event was a success.

“It went very well, we got good feedback from the people that attended,” he said.

“It was our first one but we plan on having it every year.”

Participants were sent on an 85 kilometre circuit where they had to find clues and answer questions.

The treasure hunt began at 10.30am from the Yangan Hotel and cost $5 per person.

Entertainment was provided afterwards by DJ Vince and raffles were held continuously throughout the day to raise money.

The community helped out with prizes donated from local sponsors including flower pots, a wall clock and a bedside lamp.

The winning car completed the course in two hours and four minutes.

THE Warwick Uber Markets was open again on Saturday although the weather wasn’t ideal for everyone.

The market is held at Leslie Park on the second Saturday of the month and has picked up a steady following.

Market co-ordinator Christie Russell said that it is a good place for bringing the community together. “(There’s) Lots of stalls to browse through. For the kids there’s a jumping castle, face painting.

“It is worthwhile for the family and it’s just a good place to bring people together,” she said.

Saturday was the fourth Uber Market held and there is no sign of it stopping anytime soon.

It is $20 to set up a single stall, $30 for a double and charities are free.

The next market will be held on Saturday 8 August from 10am to 2.30pm.

Warwick hub celebrates anniversary

By DANE LILLINGSTONE WARWICK’S Learning and Lifestyle hub celebrated its first anniversary on Monday.

The centre was opened one year ago to help teach people with disabilities.

It offers personalised, tailored programs with a mix of activities to enhance independence, confidence and self-esteem.

Service Development and Innovation manager Chris Beaumont said the growth in the Warwick area had been strong.

“We are so proud of how it has evolved, as it started off with two people accessing the service and it has now grown to six people,” he said.

“We have a great mix of people at L and L including a young Warwick woman who recently completed high school and is now regularly coming to our service two days a week.”

It currently operates Wednesday to Friday with the hope that this can be increased to Monday to Friday in the future.

There are more than 35 centres in Queensland that are operated with the help of the Queensland Government and eventually through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Manager of Education Services Stuart Coplick said the opening of the centre a year ago was in answer to the calls from the community.

“We are delivering education to people with disabilities.

“There is no cost to people attending here. It’s about getting the word out,” he said.

He said the way forward was in the continuous process of building relationships in the community.

“We get them involved in real work experience. Go to businesses, it’s about relationship building.”

It is an independent non-for-profit organisation that supports more than 3300 people with a disability in Australia.

Basic safety procedures to follow include: Avoid touching anything electrical with wet hands; Do not use electrical appliances such as hair dryers around wet places such as baths or basins containing water.

Use only bathroom heaters specially designed for bathroom use.

Check all appliances which have not been used for some time, particularly electric blankets. Exposed elements, perished, stiff or damaged connections on the flexible cord or plug top and any other visual defects should be inspected by licensed electricians before use.

Don’t overload circuits with too many heating appliances. This can cause damage to wiring, plugs and electrical circuitry.

Don’t pile items such as suitcases or piles of clothes on beds with electric blankets switched on.

Trapped heat in such circumstances can cause fires.

THERE were power outages in Stanthorpe on Monday as South West experienced surges in power usage with people desperately trying to stay warm.

Power use peaked at 336MW just before 6pm on Monday, the second highest peak of 2015 after the 379MW recorded on the morning of 5 June.

This follows another high of 334MW recorded at around 7am on Monday making it the highest day for power usage this year in the region.

The South West is different to other parts of regional Queensland in that it experiences its power peak demand in the colder months while most others experience it in summer.

The peak use for power last summer was the 320MW recorded for a couple of days in mid-December.

Ergon Energy is reminding customers to stay safe while trying to stay warm over this cold front period.

Against the law LIBEL laws prevent me from saying what I would like to say about the Southern Downs Regional Council and the recent rate and charges rise. Others have made their points about the SDRC in no uncertain terms. From what I am hearing around the traps, residents are outraged with the latest round of cost.

It is too bad that we have to wait four years between elections to get rid of the incompetents that are causing so much financial grief.

There is no need for the rate rises. The SDRC had meetings wherein sensible and meaningful cost-cutting ideas were out forward by the mayor and his clique wouldn’t do what was necessary and obvious. The best they can come up with is another round of rate and charge increases. Is that going to be the way of the future with each new budget? Keep pushing up the rates and charges.

One day the burden will break the proverbial camel’s back.

At the next election, swags of people will be contesting for a seat on council, especially for mayor, but that will only mean the preferential system may see him re-elected.

Justice and common sense has flown the land.

War ain’t over THE Battle over War Memorial story (Free Times, 9 July) appears to be far from settled.

However as part of this writer’s submission to show the Southern Downs Regional Council what it was they intended to remove, subdivide or sell, eight pictures in glorious colour were included in the submission.

Councillor Pennisi was apparently unmoved by the quiet beauty of this special place, with the names featured there of servicemen and others who had served this country in war and in peace.

Erected at the conclusion of World War II, by citizens of a far more patriotic mindset than now is apparent in the halls of highly-paid councillors who could sell off the site, or part of it, for a few pieces of silver, is a shameful reminder of changing times and values.

A meaningful engagement must take place through submissions to council or this War Memorial will be dealt with according to the Southern Downs Regional Council’s threats. As this ratepayer waits upon the annual money grab in the form of rates from an uncaring, unworthy, money-wasting bunch of bureaucrats who will remove Allora’s War Memorial at their electoral peril, nothing they do will ever amount to anything, or be worthy of considering at election time!

Thanks to Rudd and Gillardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gross irresponsibility, our Australian Government is borrowing $100 million each day to pay off Laborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s debt.

Why do our representatives pretend to cut debt by taxing us higher, but ignore efficient planning, sound management and slashing their own costs?

Examples of flagrant waste include too many unjustified salaries, private use of government property and vehicles as well as huge funds wasted on ill-conceived, vote-catching projects.

Who will stand up to parasites taking more and more from public funds while accepting less and less responsibility for their own lives?

HUNDREDS of Telstra customers in areas surrounding Stanthorpe, including Mount Tully, can now connect to the National Broadband Network (NBN).

Almost 1200 homes and businesses surrounding Stanthorpe are now eligible to connect to NBN services with access to Cottonvale, Glen Aplin, The Summit, The Falls, and Woodenbong coming soon.

Telstra Country Wide area general manager for Southern Queensland, May Boisen, said it would enable a range of new services and applications allowing local farmers to work more efficiently with suppliers.

“This marks the beginning of a new era for locals,” Ms Boisen said.

“Agriculture is the backbone of the Southern Queensland community and access to fast, reliable broadband can help farmers better source materials and supplies for their growing businesses,” she said.

“Farmers have always been great innovators and they now have the opportunity to quickly and easily access and share relevant industry information as well as specific tools, such as farming apps and sensors.

“Fixed wireless on the NBN can also provide the bandwidth needed to get families online at the same time to stream videos

“We’re seeing phenomenal interest in streaming video services for TV shows and movies and the NBN’s speed and reliability will allow our customers to enjoy them on multiple devices with fewer slowdowns.

new NBN packages.”

This latest development and ongoing rollout of NBN comes at a time when broadband use in Australia has reached unprecedented levels. According to Telstra data, last year the volume of traffic carried over Telstra’s fixed network increased by over 30 per cent.

The NBN rollout is expected to be completed Australia-wide by 2021.

Artists aplenty ART is flourishing in the Southern Downs with the fourth annual Art At St Mark’s set to be the best yet with a record number of artists entering an amazing 192 pieces of art.

The event at St Mark’s Hall on Grafton Street includes a lot of first timers with more than 50 per cent of the exhibiting artists entering for the first time, including some younger artists as well as some interesting new mediums.

The art show will be held on Friday 18 July, 2-6 pm, Satur-

day 19, 9.30am-3.30 pm and Sunday 20, 9.30am-2.30 pm in the parish hall, Warwick.

Entry is free during those times to view the talents of artists in the hangable art, handicraft and card making genres.

All items will be for sale and winter warming beanies and scarves are expected to be especially popular.

A ticketed function Meet the Artist will be held on Saturday 18 July from 4 - 6 pm.

The ticket price includes hot and cold savouries, wine or punch and live jazz enter-

tainment from Yangan’s Sue Needer.

Tickets may be purchased in advance from St Mark’s Office, the sales desk on 17 and 18 July or at the door.

Origin dust settles, Heritage Round opens

By CASEY O’CONNOR THE polar storm that is causing us all to freeze at the moment was nothing compared to the perfect Maroon Storm that hit Suncorp last week as Queensland wrapped up yet another Origin in spectacular style.

For Queensland supporters, the Maroon glow of a sensational win will be enough to ward off any winter chills for a very long time. The majority of players came out of that Origin storm unscathed and starred in round 18 although there were some still suffering Maroon shock.

The focus now shifts squarely to the business end of the season, and who will be in and who will be left to rue missed opportunities.

On Friday night, Parramatta and Canterbury go head to head at ANZ, and in Melbourne the Storm host the Panthers to open the Heritage Round.

The Eels are coming off a round 18 bye but prior to that were big winners over the Tigers in an impressive win. They have since re-signed a raft of current players so the vibe in the playing group will be positive. One glaring omission is Chris Sandow who is yet to be offered a contract and rumours indicate his future may lie with Warrington in the UK. The big Canterbury forwards were expected to dominate in their clash against the Broncos last Saturday but Brisbane played the edges and the Dogs were made to look tired and lethargic. Their last option kicks were unimpressive, and they had difficulty getting out of their own half for much of the game. If the Dogs are to remain in the top eight, they need a far better performance this week. The Eels looked impressive winners in round 17, but a poor performance from the Tigers added to the gloss. I am prepared to forgive the Dogs and expect them to bite back here.

Melbourne and the Warriors treated fans and TV audiences to one

of the most entertaining games we have seen this season. Melbourne played well but return to AAMI Park this week looking to break their recent losing sequence. Melbourne finished the game with better possession and a better completion rate, but behind on the scoreboard.

They are obviously missing Slater and must adjust quickly if they are to remain in the eight.

Panthers’ fans were left bitterly disappointed after their side was thumped by the Roosters. The 20-point loss highlighted their poor defence and lack of discipline.

Don’t see much joy for them at AAMI Park. Melbourne played well enough in NZ to turn the losing tide here.

On Saturday, the Sharks leave the safe haven of Remondis and head to icy Canberra to tackle the Warriors.

The Raiders Origin duo, Papalii and Lee returned from camp Maroon full of confidence in their own ability. It showed on the field as the Raiders continued their climb up the ladder with a win over the Knights in a high scoring game. Their opponents this weekend, the Sharks are another side building in confidence and sneaking closer to a top-eight spot. There are glimpses of the Ben Barba magic that won him accolades in past seasons and against the Dragons he pulled off one of the tackles of the season, highlighting the confidence he is playing with.

There is a lot riding on the outcome of this game. Despite a poor home record this season and the loss of Sam Williams with a pec injury, I think the Raiders are more likely to handle what are expected to be ordinary conditions at GIO Stadium.

The Knights suffered another loss at Hunter Stadium last weekend, but impressed in the second half. They bounced back from a 24-4 deficit and made the Raiders work for their win in the second half. The Knights dominated possession throughout the game, but

could not turn that into points. The Knights look to be moving closer to a win, and that should come against the Titans who could not have been less impressive on Monday night against Manly.

The clash between the Dragons and Rabbitohs at the Sydney Cricket Ground was billed as headline act of this Heritage Round at the start of the season.

Injuries have decimated the Dragons who last weekend struggled to out a team on the park. In their last game, the Bunnies looked out of sorts without GI and were no match for the Panthers. They have slipped out of the top four, but look for a form turn around here from the Rabbitohs. The prospect of the clash between the Roosters and Warriors should have every league fan salivating. The Roosters played like a side with their eye on another premiership when they humbled the Panthers and the Warriors were sensational in a thrilling win over Melbourne. Sean Johnson was outstanding and the acrobatics try assist from Jake Friend has ensured he will be remembered long after he hangs up his boots.

The Warriors are into the top four and snapping at the heels of the Roosters. However I am going to stick with the Roosters in what should be another fabulous game but a Warriors win will come as no surprise.

The Broncos are enjoying a stellar season. They have weathered the Origin storm unscathed and are riding high four points clear at the top of the table.

Their win over Canterbury was full of class. Their Origin players backed up well doing all that could be expected of them. While Manly have certainly returned to form, I want to see more from them before saying they have turned the corner. I am not prepared to declare them good things to make the eight just yet.

A game at Brookvale on Monday night is a big advantage and both these sides have plenty at stake. If the Cowboys are genuine contenders, these are the games they must win. If Manly is to make the eight and has truly returned to form, they need to beat the Cowboys. In a split decision, I am leaning towards the Cowboys to continue their ride towards the finals.

Keep it affordable THE reason why I and many other people and families moved to Warwick and Southern Downs is because it is “just” affordable with normal Queensland wages which haven’t gone up 4-14 per cent!

On Wednesday 1 July a meeting was held by Davin Keenan CEO of SDRC and Pam Burley, a community officer with ratepayer and innovator Donna Nevin.

A simple strategy was submitted to the CEO that was to simply halve the green and yellow bin pick-up e.g. green - once a fortnight and yellow - once a month. Many agree. This change would not only encourage people to reduce their packaging and separate but also save us all $3-$4 million a year. Not to mention this was discussed on the 22 June, way before final decisions.

This council will not be re-elected again and certainly does not think outside the “box”.

Congratulations, now it’s no longer viable to live here.

There is not enough or no work here for the youth to 25 and mature age. I now, since moving here in 2009 pay much much more than the Gold

Coast, where I was 10 minutes from the Broadwater. I and many others will be keen to pack up, sell and go.

Have the rates gone up 4 per cent or 14 per cent? And why did this council amalgamate in the first place?

Such an expensive useless exercise, just as was the fluoridation scheme. Now where is that $600,000 a year? SDRC we may be 160 kilometres from Brisbane but we are certainly 30 years behind with recycling strategies.

On 1 July, Warwick became a tourist destination. They will be looking for recycling bins to continue their intelligent practice. I, myself started 35 years ago when it was brought to my attention by Councillor Stephen Schwarten of the Rockhampton Council and founder of “The Children’s Tree Planting Project”. We initiated recycling and tree planting 35 years ago. Now they are destroying or have destroyed the land with CSG. We as people, families, taxpayers and ratepayers can no longer trust our council or government.

Greed and money has raised its head above clean water, good soil, wildlife, habitats, clean foods and fresh air. This is virtually slow mass murder

of humans and all living creatures in and around these gas wells that are plaguing our lands of Australia.

This can never be replaced, rectified nor will ever be healthy and they who do this, must be held accountable, even the thoughtless subservient employees who give their hands to kill.

Have a good look around you and what you do - you make your short-term living at the cost of the land that human beings rely on for sustenance. Over the Great Dividing Range lurks madness. I am absolutely astonished at all lack of thinking or having consideration for anything besides your precious money. I say “eat it”.

It’s our fault ARE our councillors suitably qualified?

The main reason for justified criticism of councillors, not only locally, throughout Australia, is negligence on our part, the ratepayer.

We do not scrutinise candidates prior to voting for whatever reason - our indifference, compul-

sory voting or just “he/she is a good bloke".

Our councillors are just not equipped with skills required to fulfil their tasks, particularly on the financial side. Often councillors have failed businesses in their wake.

Some having taken redundancy packages from previous employers and are looking for the healthy sustenance a councillor attracts from ‘muggins’ the ratepayer.

Generally however they do seem to be well qualified in two areas - they possess both the ‘gift of the bab’ and an ‘ego’ that cannot be deflated.

The longer in the job, the more they consumed with their self-importance they become as they cling like a tick to the unfortunate host!

“We must find and elect representatives with professional training and useful experience to manage our local region”.

I concede this note to be sadly ‘negative’ however these things must be aired and not whispered.

WE MAROONS supporters will be basking in the glory of a record win in Origin for some time to come, but for cricket supporters things are not quite so rosy after the Aussies loss to the Poms in the first Test.

The question now is what of Watto - does he go or will selectors persist. I personally think his number is up and will be surprised if he is not replaced. News that Marsh senior was seen boarding a plane bound for London earlier in the week might be a clue that there has been an early whisper.

While the loss was a blow, if Haddin had gloved the catch of Joe Root we may well have been singing a different song - but that is cricket. What I find interesting is the criticism from many quarters of Michael Clarke. I doubt there has ever been an Australian cricket captain who has come in for such poor treatment from some quarters of the press.

At the same time as the Test, Wimbledon wrapped up in spectacular style with yet another win to the powerhouse of women’s tennis Serina Williams who must go down in history as one of the most dominant women players of all times. She too continues to polarise the public despite her successes.

In the men’s final, Novak Djokovic must have felt like public enemy number one when he played Roger Federer such was the support for the Federer.

As former champions Laver, Borg and Neale Fraser watched on, Federer laid impressive early foundations but the Serb broke back and engineered a masterful win over the master. He is the first man to successfully defend the Wimbledon title since Federer in 2007.

Now for those Blues supporters hiding in our midst, did I mention that Queensland won Origin game three - now what was that score again - yes that’s right 52-6 - and that of course meant yet another series to the Maroons. It’s tough being a Queenslander.

- Casey COLLECTING FOR A CAUSE TIM Gaske director of coaching at the Wolves Development Academy is an ambassador for the Reagan Milstein Foundation.

You may not have heard of this foundation. It was established in 2010 to honour the memory of a quite remarkable 14-year-old who had a passion for sport - especially football (soccer) and who wanted to make the world a better place. This remarkable youngster never got to realise his dreams of coaching a junior football team, building a career as a sports journalist and doing good things in the world. He was fatally injured in a scuba diving accident and passed away in July 2010. His family and friends honoured his memory by establishing the RMF to make a difference to others on his behalf.

Since its launch in November 2010, RMF has assisted a number of initiatives and programs to help less fortunate children in Australia, Tonga, Vanuatu, Vietnam and many other countries.

Currently, the RMF through ambassadors like Tim Gaske is busy collecting boots, sneakers and old jerseys to distribute to less fortunate places.

Bunnings, Warwick, donated a large wheelie bin to collect second hand gear at Queens Park and one box of boots is already headed to Vanuatu.

Tim is keen to see the donations continue, so don’t toss those old boots and gear. Tim can organise collection points at either Queen’s Park in Warwick or through the Bendigo Bank in Stanthorpe.

The foundation has also provided Tim’s son Hayden Gaske with the opportunity of a lifetime this week.

He will be one of a number of kids who get to run onto the field at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night with the Liverpool players prior to their

game against the Brisbane Roar.

A group of academy coaches and kids has also been invited to the Liverpool training session at Suncorp.

It is sure to be a memorable event.

MCCOSKER SIZZLES IN CONDITIONS MARK McCosker put aside the arctic conditions and returned a hot round to take the honours in last Saturday’s stroke event in Stanthorpe sponsored by Reece Plumbing. McCosker returned a nett 66, four shots clear of runner-up, Santo Cavallaro (nett 70).

Visitor Ryan Gaske, who plays off plus 4, returned a gross score of 74 off the stick and along the way took the balls on offer for the 17th pin, pin shot at 1/10 and the birdies nest at 9.

Ian Pickering played a good tee shot at 3/12 to hold the pin, Kev Rowling collected the pro-pin at 5/14 and Keith Barnett held on to 9/18.

The ladies event was much closer with Tric Fittock on nett 75 winning the day, two shots clear of runner-up, Neta Thouard, with nett 77.

The winning pair also shared the pin shots, with Tric collecting at 3/12 and Neta holding the approach at 17.

In the run down, it was a ball each to Aaron Simmers, Keith Barnett, Viv Thouard, Ian Pickering and Kay Webb.

In the match play, there was one game decided on Saturday. Keith Barnett advances to the next round after his win over Bill Pyne. The second round of the match play begins this Saturday.

In club events this Saturday, Aqua Rural is the sponsor of the single stableford. Ian Pickering and Len Leigh have answered the call and are in the starter’s box. Tee off is from 11am and the time sheet is on the board at the clubhouse.

Local Sport BREEZE BLOWS IN MEMORIES THE cool breeze that greeted the Single Action shooters at Inglewood last weekend brought with it memories of times long past.

Conditions definitely raised thoughts of the past when the cool snow-filled breeze brought coming of winter to the plains.

However, the local gun slingers were unperturbed by thoughts of snow- filled dry gulches as they fought the jail escapees. Doc Solomon defended the sheriff’s office with valour.

The results ended up as follows: Tom Donald showed his liking for the conditions with a win over the good Doc and Ross Jackson.

Down to the future there was a 50 Rimfire shoot underway at the bench rests.

Martin Unwin had success over Quentin Chapman and Paul Cassis. In the junior event, it was another Unwin taking the honours with Tristan Unwin outgunning William Patterson.

On Sunday, Muzzle loading and Centrefire are on the program and everyone is hoping for kinder conditions.

CIESOLKA’S RECORD HAUL BRODIE Ciesolka starred in Wattles big win over Souths last weekend. The five eighth scored a club record six tries in Wattles 70-24 demolition of the Tigers.

The six-try haul has propelled the Wattles player to second place on the TRL try scorer’s list just one try behind Billy Jackwitz. Ciesolka has scored 18 tries this season with 13 of those coming in the past six games which bodes well for Wattles.

Wattles romped in 12 tries in total to make it a clean sweep in all grades. Their reserve grade also had a big win 64-0 while the under 18s had a 44-16. Wattles now have a firm grip on number one spot on the TRL leader board and this week host Toowoomba Valleys.

Ciesiolka’s six-try haul is an impressive stat however the TRL record is held by former Stanthorpe Gremlin Rod Reeves. In a TRL game against Gatton in 1991, Reeves scored eight tries for the Gremlins. The score in that game was 48-8 - Reeves scoring all but one of the Gremlins’ tries, the remaining try scored by Paul Shatte.

DIFFICULT CONDITONS FOR PLAYERS BOWLERS at the Summit were forced to deal with the bitterly cold wind and rain last Saturday as they fought out the sectional play in the B grade singles. Against the odds, players managed to get in three rounds. Thanks to the Ray Spiller Michael Sweeney, Len Covill Quinton and Darren Stanley and Wayne Thomas who gave up the warmth of the clubhouse to act as markers for the event. The greens were once again prepared in fine style for the event.

Given the less than ideal conditions on the greens, the results were pleasantly surprising.

There were some good bowls played and some really tight heads which always makes for intriguing games.

The players who managed to get through to the semis were Tyler Sweeney, Kurt Empen, Trevor Morris and Brian Wilmot. The knockout semis will be played on a day yet to be determined.

Bowlers are reminded that the Southern Cross Club Warwick is holding the Presidents Singles this weekend. Players who have nominated are required to be there by 8.45am on Saturday to begin play at 9am. Post sectional play will continue on Sunday.

Pennants competition is just around the corner and players are asked to mark their availability or otherwise on the notice board at the summit club.

There will be three divisions this year.

TIGERS BACK IN FORM THE Tenterfield Tigers showed they are back to almost their best with a 64-20 win last weekend over the Killarney Cutters.

Halfback Jack Thomas and centre Josh Lucas each scored three tries in a dominant performance by the Tigers. Captain coach Brendan Minns said he was pleased with the way the side played last weekend and was looking forward to the semifinals. Aside from Thomas and Lucas, Minns said he was impressed with the performance of Matt Brown, Adam Gennings and Jake Kelly who also kept the scoreboard attendants busy.

In a beaten side, Brett Lambert and Blake Graham were two of Killarney’s best. John Trindall led from the front in normal style, scoring two tries.

against the unbeaten Tigerettes.

This weekend Tenterfield host Wallangarra and Killarney host the Gremlins.

GAMES KEENLY CONTESTED SCHOOL holidays and the less than ideal conditions kept numbers down on the croquet court, but games were keenly played in all three disciplines. In association croquet games last week, Jenny Tunbridge and Pat Schnoor, Pat had breaks of seven and four before pegging out with 26 against her opponents 15. Joy Newman defeated Grace Howard and Andrea Denkewitz 21-17 in their game.

Hoop runners played two games of doubles on Wednesday. The first game was a tough close game - the final score 11 -9. Shirley Evans’ produced some outstanding play in the second game, top scoring with seven hoops including another hoop in one. The final score 13-5. No great surprise that Saturday’s game did not proceed because of the poor weather conditions.

Players were joined by a couple of eager youngsters, Emily Dickenson and Kara Pereira. The young players enjoyed the game and managed to be on the winning side for two of the games. Game three was a tied event, and in the fourth game the white team managed a win. The court was hired recently for a Christmas in July celebration and the visitors had a wonderful day.

COWBOYS KNOCK HAWKS OFF THEIR PERCH THE Warwick Cowboys scored an upset win over the Gatton Hawks at Fr Ranger Oval. The Cowboys win knocked the Hawks off the top of the leader board, a position they shared with Wattles and Highfields and keeps the Cowboys hopes of a top-five finish this season alive.

In a tough game, the Cowboys players stood up, recording a 32-30 win. The home side established a 14-point lead early in the first half. At half time, scores were 24-20. The teams traded tries in the second half. With the game in the balance, a solid team performance and strong defence saw the Cowboys claim two very impor-

GREMLINS DOMINATE IN BITTER conditions last Saturday, the Stanthorpe Gremlins notched up another impressive win. The Gremlins are dominating the Border Rugby league in season 2015 and on Saturday notched up a 46-12 over the Wallangarra Rams.

The Gremlins skipped away to an early 10-0 lead before the Rams hit back. In the second half, the Rams had no answers against the solid Gremlins attack. Ben Staley had an outstanding game at lock and was instrumental in the Gremlins win while the combination of two of the young Gremlins Tom Cameron and Tom Jensen is developing into a nice partnership.

The ladies game between the Gremlinettes and Ramettes brought the crowd to its feet as the two sides played out a 10-all draw.

Margaret Taylor once the Queen of the 4s posted another personal best with an extra X for 119.7. Dave Taylor having a bit of trouble with his master eye shot an amazing 123.9 left handed.
