Pensioners were likely to economise by cutting back on food, medication, heating and transport, Mr McEniery said.

Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley said the inequity of the new rates and fees schedule meant some ratepayers faced heftier costs than others,

with pensioners likely to be the budget’s biggest casualty.

“What has been delivered is the equivalent to about a 10 per cent rate rise. We could have spread the burden more equally,” Cr Bartley said.

Killarney and Stanthorpe residents face about a 14 per cent overall rise, he said.

Pensioners are entitled to a rates subsidy under the State Government, but Cr Bartley said the subsidy might not be retained indefinitely, and pensioners would have already factored in the benefit.

Molester is convicted

By DANE LILLINGSTONE A 21-YEAR-OLD Warwick man accused of molesting his seven-yearold stepdaughter was found guilty of one count of rape and sentenced to five years imprisonment, at Warwick District Court last week .

The man, who pleaded not guilty, looked distraught upon hearing the verdict, immediately looking down and shaking his head.

Upon handing down the verdict, Judge Douglas J. McGill said: “Because you were a de facto stepfather, you were in a position of trust. There was an abuse of this trust.”

He said that there was “no indication of remorse.”

The trial centred on the relationship of the man and the girl’s mother and involved a bitter custody disagreement.

The couple have one child together, with the woman having an additional child with another man.

The young girl told police she had been sexually assaulted by the man in their home in Warwick last year. She was taken to the police station months after the incident by her grandmother where she told police that the man had taken off her clothes and raped her.

It was said that the incident occurred when the mother of the girl woke up to find the man not in her bed and then found him asleep in her

daughter’s room with her daughter.

The girl gave her testimony by video link and said in a statement that “(He) put his, in my privates. I said ouch.”

When asked what was said next, she said “he pulled his pants up and said don’t tell mummy.”

Medical evidence submitted to the court outlined that there were signs of penetration by someone with something on the child.

In a police statement, the man denied having ever been alone or in bed with the girl, or that there had been other accusations of sexual abuse against the girl previously.

The defence barrister argued that

the woman was left distraught after a disagreement with the man over custody of the woman’s other child.

The defence barrister also argued that the story may have been fed to the girl by her mother or grandmother as revenge for having custody of their other child.

At one point in questioning the girl was asked if her mummy instructed her to tell the story and she replied yes.

They also argued that there were inconsistencies in testimonies and dates and that the timing was strange, with the police complaint made months after the incident and shortly after a custody disagreement.

The ceremony formally began with the welcome to country ceremony.

“Today’s a very important day in the Indigenous community and we want to respect the importance that it means for them so want to share in that as well.

“We do the NAIDOC flag-raising ceremony every year to pay our

respects to the Indigenous community.”

NAIDOC celebrations will continue in Warwick today (Thursday) with the NAIDOC Elders morning tea at Williams Hall.

A TWO-vehicle crash occurred on the Cunningham Highway on Sunday around noon.

At 11.59am it was reported that a red Toyota Camry came into contact with a Mazda travelling south on the Cunningham Highway.

It was later reported to police.

Vehicle break-in

LAST Thursday a search warrant was executed on premises situated in McCosker Drive, Dalveen, uncovering a range of cannabis, drug paraphernalia, assorted script medication, unknown white powder and a disassembled rifle.

A 33-year-old-man was charged with permitting a place to be used for the administration of dangerous drugs, disobeying a lawful direction, possessing drug utensils and unlawfully possessing a controlled substance.

A 24-year-old Glen Aplin man was charged with disobeying a lawful direction, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing drug utensils while an 18-year-old female from Amiens received drug diversion.

Highway crash

Search uncovers drugs

MULTIPLE guns have been stolen from a privately owned vehicle on Willi Street in Warwick.

The incident occurred between midnight and 6am on Friday. The owner woke to find the guns were no longer in the vehicle and immediately called police.

Police are investigating the incident, but at this stage the firearms have not been located.

ON MONDAY the Warwick police station held a flag-raising ceremony as a part of the National NAIDOC week celebrations.

The theme for this year is ‘we all stand on sacred ground: learn, respect and celebrate.’

The ceremony formally began with the ‘welcome to country’ ceremony performed by Githabul tribe representative Robert Williams, which was followed by a minute’s silence in respect for our Indigenous ancestors and elders, past and present.

Mr Williams spoke at the ceremony, along with his wife Gloria Williams and Inspector Mike Curtain from the Darling Downs police district.

“Warwick is Githabul country without a shadow of a doubt,” Mr

Williams said.

“It’s a beautiful day here in Warwick, we had a beautiful welcome to country, good turnout. I just hope that in the near future we can get more people involved.”

Mrs Williams also participated in the event, giving a speech and performing a song from the Githabul people.

“Long before white settlement, we had a deep connection with this land. Our bibles got written in the landscapes,” she said.

Acting Senior Sergeant Lisa Self emceed, saying that it was important for the community. “(It) is important for Warwick because we have a large indigenous community here and we want tobuild the best relationships we can between the police and the Indigenous community so that we all get on as a community together,” she said.

Guns stolen from car

A VEHICLE was broken into on Grafton Street in Warwick, sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The vehicle was in an open carport in the owner’s backyard.

It is believed that someone has entered the property and broken into the car between Saturday at 4.40pm and Sunday at 8.40am.

It was not reported what was stolen, but the owner found discarded cards in their backyard Sunday morning.

We’re carrying the debt IT WAS with interest that I read in SFT that although our local councillors have rejected the proposed 2.3 per cent pay increase, we shall still have to pay for it.

It is proposed that the monies be spent on other activities in the operational budget.

I find it arrogant of Mayor Peter Blundell not to have brought this matter before the council prior to the (apparent) three month cut-off.

It’s fine to apologise after the fact when you are earning in excess of $117,000 per annum but surely when you are earning this kind of money your mind should be on the job 100 per cent and not make this kind of error.

The next question, of course, is what guarantees do we have that the monies will be spent wisely and not squandered on projects that are scarcely viable.

This by a council that has increased the debt since taking office even though it was handed a considerable sum when Stanthorpe was amalgamated with Warwick.

There is an old adage “neither a borrower nor a lender be” that our forefathers generally obeyed.

It is amazing that with the highly educated, extremely intelligent treasurers we have had e.g.

Keating, Costello, Hockey, etc. at all levels of government, the council, along with all the others, are in debt.

The State Governments, especially Queensland, are in debt, and the Federal Government, not only the current account but also the trading account, is in massive debt.

Obviously their infinite wisdom must be called into question and that is putting it politely!

We see in all levels of government the eager, avaricious, unparalleled rush to increase their salaries, allowances, perks and gratuities while they do not consider that all these monies come from us, the ratepayer and taxpayer.

Held to account OUR council has specific duty statements for clerks and dozer operators.

Councillors must also be held to account to ensure that our representatives perform the jobs

we pay them to do.

The Local Government Act states that local government principles include transparent and effective processes and decision making in the public interest yet the last budget slugging us with an effective 10 per cent rate increase was seemingly given inadequate public scrutiny.

Section 12 on Responsibilities of Councillors states that a councillor must represent the current and future interests of the residents and provide high quality leadership to the community.

Accepted principles of leadership include: Identify your own strengths and weaknesses, always strive to improve.

Seek and accept responsibility, never pass the buck; be proactive.

Make sound, honest and timely decisions based upon all relevant factors.

Keep people fully informed of the changing situation.

Personal qualities essential to success include courage, integrity, initiative, motivation, decisiveness, responsibility, judgement, knowledge, loyalty, selflessness and the ability to communicate.

It is said that one councillor said not a word at the last budget meeting.

We must find and elect representatives with professional training and useful experience to manage our local region.

Protected from ourselves TONY Hassall is quite correct in what he said (Just Add Danger, Southern Free Times, 2 July) regarding the entrance to Stanthorpe at the southern bypass.

However, I don’t think the driver pulling a caravan 12 years ago didn’t know he was leaving the highway and entering town.

The big sign at the southern entrance to Stanthorpe has a different message every time I pass the spot.

And it is a distraction as are all such signs and other road ‘safety’ signs dreamed up by the road safety crowd who have to keep thinking up new ideas to justify their existence.

Engineering expansion EMPIRE builders they are called, those who rely on numerous engineers to expand their pay packets!This writer was told Mr Ferguson was empire building when he expanded from a shared engineer to three in the council he left to come to Warwick.

Then apparently empire building went into overdrive as it seems as if we now have to fund nine of them! Engineers do what?

Another mystery to this writer is to where the tens of thousands of dollars saved when sensible people forced the removal of fluoride from the water supply is hiding.

Now they the council are flat strap to hock off parks and war memorials and when all is gone what will bail them out next time?

Ratepayers await with dread the fall of rates notices into mail boxes.

There is only one answer to this debt laden team who see rate payers as unable to fight back and that is an administrator, someone who can balance the books, not throw them at us!

Cost of council living I WRITE in regard to the budget.

At what stage will living on the Southern Downs become untenable for rural people who have lived here for years?

We are told that the average wage for council staff will reach $100,000 within 10 years.

There is no way in the world that I can make that amount of money on my small property but my rates will go to support these extraordinary wages.

Raceway back to the future

By DANE LILLINGSTONE MORE than 200 drivers competed in the 38th annual Historic Queensland Race Meeting on the weekend.

The event at Morgan Park Raceway gave the community a firsthand glance of what the cars on our roads used to look like with a wide range of road cars.

Pre-’60s cars, touring cars, open wheel racing cars, sports racing cars and production sports cars were all on show on the 3km track.

Spectators were even invited into the pit lane.

Brisbane driver Simon Phillips won the Jack Lacey Trophy for group and touring cars in his ToranaGTR Xu1 while Ian Ross took out the Queensland Tourist Trophy.

The event is organised by the Historic Racing Club (QLD) which will be happy with nine grids covering 21 classes of historic racing cars.

Racing legends Don Holland and Barry Seton were among those in attendance. They have raced against each other since 1961. Barry Seton, father of Glenn, won Bathurst in 1965.

Morgan Park Raceway won’t have to wait long until its next event with the Queensland Super Sprint Series A scheduled for 18 and 19 July.

On Saturday night, the NAIDOC Week celebrations hit the Warwick Town Hall with a church service.

Among those in attendance included representatives of the Waringh Waringh group, Warwick Victory Centre and visitors from as far as Casino.

Those assembled partook in fellowship, music, dancing and of course food.

Warwick Victory Centre pastor Trevor Springate and the Indigenous Minister from Casino Craig Fraser headed the service.

Battle over war memorial Casey’s tips

ANGRY Allora residents are up in arms over the Southern Downs Regional Council’s plans for rationalisation of their community park.

The Darling Street War Memorial park has had a sign erected by the council inviting suggestions for the future use of the space.

Local resident Melba Morris has led her community’s call for any future plans for redevelopment of the area to be thrown out the window.

“There’s been a lot of interest in it lately, and people here are very anxious about this around here. Very anxious,” she said.

The main sticking point for residents is the future of the war memorial. Erected at the conclu-

sion of World War II, the 1945 memorial includes a large arch and brick pillars with large bronze medallions on top.

“The council told us that you can’t have two war memorials in the town and look after them. I spoke to them (the council) yesterday. They said it could be (used for) reducing services, changing services, exploring leasing opportunities through EOI, reducing the size, subdividing, relocation or selling. They are hitting the little towns and (they) get away with it,” Ms Morris said.

Councillor Vic Pennisi says the process will not be taken lightly or be rushed into.

“We have no formal plans for this area, and will wait for the consultation phase of this process before a recommendation is made

for council to consider,” he said.

“If we did know the answer, the consultation would truly be of no value. We may need to extend consultation in some cases, and until we hear from people this will be difficult to gauge. One thing we would like to do is to move the memorial arch to the back of memorial park, however we will be contacting family members before any of this can be considered further. It is important that residents send in their submissions so that a meaningful engagement can take place,” Cr Pennisi said.

There are over 160 parks controlled by the Southern Downs Regional Council with a large number of parks currently being put through a series of feasibility tests with the possibility of rationalisation.

The house in Canning Street will now be used on a permanent basis as they plan to introduce more events like the meet and greet they held recently.

Monica Ward is one of the people behind DAG Force, and she said the open day was a success.

“It went really well, we’ve

got the house opened, a lot of people are interested in helping out. Tony Coote from the Mulloon Institute will be coming up in a few weeks,” she said.

“What we trying to do is focus on having services available to people who need them.”

They plan to hold regular gatherings for things such as mindfulness, meditation, reflexology, permaculture, aroma therapy, spiritual guidance, United Faith Organisation (all denominations) as well as working with the Warwick Blind and Vision Impaired and Demented Artists Group.

SOME of Australia’s best known racing identities of past decades will be in the spotlight when the Historic Leyburn Sprints hosts its inaugural Legends Dinner during the 20th anniversary next month.

Ron Tauranac, Bo Seton, Bruce Allison, Paul Stokell, John French, Bob Holden, Jim Bertram, Brian Michelmore and John English will appear at the winner to be held on Saturday night 15 August at Leyburn’s Royal Hotel, which itself is an historic venue with a licence dating back to 1863.

Adding to the attractions, Bo Seton’s favourite Bathurst Ford Capri will be part of the celebrations.

The 1965 Bathurst Armstrong 500 winner, now aged 78, will be making his first appearance at Leyburn, the round-the-houses time trials that commemorate the running of the 1949 Australian Grand Prix on a wartime airfield just outside the Darling Downs village.

“Captain Capri”, as he’s known, hopes to bring the car that he and his son Glenn shared in the 1983 Bathurst 1000. Bo hasn’t driven the Capri for several years, but says it’s the only one he’s kept from the many he built and raced, because of its sentimental value.

“I’ve always kept it. It means a lot to the family. It’s quite a few years since it’s run, but I still love getting away to race meetings,” Seton said.

Organisers are expecting entries from up to 225 classic, historic and performance cars on the track. While on-track competition takes centre stage, off-track attractions will feature big Shannons Show ‘n’ Shine and Vintage Caravans displays, both offering prizes for winners in several classes.

The inaugural Legends Dinner will provide entertainment for competitors and supporters who camp every year and add to the Sprints’ special country atmosphere. For more information: www.historicleyburnsprints.com.au.

Rural Links Family polocrosse Caseyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tips

FAMILIES will be the focus at this weekendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rescheduled Clifton polocrosse carnival.

The club postponed the event two months ago after heavy rain made playing conditions unsafe.

But, in keeping with its philosophy of placing importance on families having fun, the wet weather wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to dampen the spirits of club members.

The club is looking forward to hosting about 30 teams from across Queensland.

Clifton Polocrosse Club president Mark Hoey said polocrosse had long been known as a family sport.

It is a great game for teaching children important values such as teamwork, co-operation and good sportsmanship, along with responsibility of having to care for their horse,â&#x20AC;? Mr Hoey said.

Mr Hoey introduced a family competition for the Clifton carnival three years ago to honour the tradition of families competing together in polocrosse with a formal competition and trophy.

The club has made the Family Challenge Competition a permanent fixture of its annual carnival.

The eligibility for the competition is that each team be made up of immediate family members (husband, wife, children, son/daughter-in-law or grandchildren) from the same club.

Up to three families can compete together in the same team.

Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entertainment program will include the Scott Keogh futurity for breeders and trainers to display the equine talents of those suited to the game of polocrosse.

Mr Hoey said Clifton-based horseman Scott Keogh had done a lot to improve horsemanship in the game of polocrosse in recent years by teaching riding skills that are proven to work.

Mr Keogh from SK Horsemanship has spent much of the past three years producing Sport Horse DVDS that have sold worldwide, and has been travelling to assist people train their horses.

Play will commence at 8am this Saturday at Clifton Recreational Grounds.

Rain forecast for mid-July looks to sunny days

A WEAK high pressure system over South Australia extends a ridge into the Southern Downs this week with dry and sunny conditions persisting over much of the region during the next couple of days.

A ridge along the east coast will be reinforced as a new high shifts east

into the Tasman Sea. Winds then will tend to be more moist onshore about the east Queensland coast from today onwards, with moisture also gradually extending into the central and southern interior late in the week.

An upper trough and an associated surface trough are expected to move eastwards across

the Southern Downs later in the week.

Some rain is expected on 12 July and from 14 to 18 July.

The latter part of July should be drier than normal with very little rain expected.

Some rain events should move from the north into our region toward the middle of the

month, but will most likely affect coastal areas more than the south.

Farms set for boost SOUTHERN Downs producers are at the forefront of a $1.2 billion package to boost farm incomes and increase drought assistance as part of a long awaited agricultural competitiveness White Paper.

The Federal Government released the White Paper on the weekend.

Federal LNP Maranoa MP Bruce Scott said it sets out the Coalition Government’s vision for the sector by supporting farming families and helping them to grow their businesses.

“Whether it’s meat, grain, wine, horticulture or anything in between - the White Paper’s release is the start of a new age

for agriculture.

“It provides the blueprint for greater investment, innovation and is set to assist producers to improve productivity and capitalise on domestic and international market opportunities,” Mr Scott said.

The White Paper and the 2015 Budget outlines a range of options.

Banks will be able to allow farmers to use Farm Management Deposits as a business loan offset, reducing interest costs estimated at up to $150 million a year from 1 July 2016.

Farmers will be able to opt back into income tax averaging

after 10 years from 1 July 2016 and double their Farm Management Deposits to $800,000 from 1 July 2016.

There will be immediate tax deduction for fencing, immediate tax deduction of the cost of new water infrastructure and accelerated three-year depreciation of capital expenditure on fodder assets.

The government will also invest $11.4 million to boost ACCC engagement with the agricultural sector including a new commissioner with expertise in agriculture.

Producers and industry representatives were also there to find out who would win the Paul ‘Beaver’ Lennon Memorial Shield for the most successful wethers on a $/DSE basis from the 2014 shearing.

Congratulations went to Charles Capel, ‘Kirkcowan’, Deepwater, who first joined the wether trial in 2003 after moving to the Deepwater district from Burren Junction west of Narrabri.

“When we moved to Deepwater we brought our nucleus flock with us.

“We have consistently used a different type of ram to give us a bit more length and density in the wool.”

They’re wool trial winners SHEARING results of the merino wethers on the Northern Tablelands wether trial have been analysed and distributed.

The four-year wether trial allows local breeders to benchmark the performance of their flocks against others in the district on an annual basis.

Twenty-five local landholders each supplied 10 merino wethers to the trial when it was established.

Landholders and industry representatives from across the region gathered last week at the NSWDPI Agriculture and Advisory Research Station in Glen Innes to compare the results.

TAX TIPS This tax time, KLAS wants to share the latest pointers from the Australian Tax Office, so you get caught out with what has changed this year.

There are some changes that may affect you, in particular: The mature-aged worker tax offset has been removed, which means it cannot be claimed on your 2015 tax return.

You will be only eligible to claim the net medical expenses tax offset if you received it in your 2013/’14 tax assessment. However, if you have out-of-pocket medical expenses related to disability aids, attendant care or aged care, you are still able to claim them.

You can no longer claim the dependent spouse tax offset. If you have claimed the dependent spouse tax offset through a withholding arrangement with your employer, this may result in you having a tax debt this year. You will need to ensure you submit an updated TFN declaration (or withholding declaration) to your employer for 2015-’16 to increase your withholdings.

If you’re planning to complete your own return, make sure to lodge before the 31 October deadline to avoid penalties.

Cowboys show off, high in the saddle

By CASEY O’CONNOR WITH the focus on Origin Three and much talk around Robbie Farah’s broken handor whether Michael Ennis would fill the Blues hooking role, there were only four games in Round 17. Out of those games has come some interesting results. We have seen teams return to form and others struggle due to injury and Origin, and we have learned a little more about each of the teams. The Cowboys who have a well-earned bye this weekend banished any doubts of their ability to make it to the grand final with a gutsy win over the Dragons.

The Sea Eagles finally dragged themselves off the bottom of the cage to get their season moving in the right direction, but despite the win over the Sharks, I remain unconvinced they will be an influence at the end of the season. The Panthers still have some impressive talent in the casualty ward, but had enough firepower to impress on Friday night and you get the sense we can expect them to surge in a similar manner to 2014. If you are a Panthers fan, the back end of the season is sure to be an exciting one. The Bunnies on the other hand look to be a shadow of the side that took all before them last season. They have a week off in Round 18, but need to do a lot of work when GI returns to regain their momentum.

On Monday night, the Eels slipped past the Tigers after a sensational performance from Semi Radradra. He became the first player in 60 years to score multiple tries in five consecutive games.

The win shoots the Eels off the bottom of the ladder and up to 12th while the Tigers take up the cellar dwellers spot.

And on to round 18 - we are truly into the business end of the season and trying to predict the outcome of games this weekend is once again fraught with difficulties. Until after

the “Decider” on Wednesday night, we will not know whether coaches will choose to rest or play their Origin players. With the build up to Origin and the high stakes, I am predicting there will be some players knocking on the Judiciary door post game.

On Friday night, we head to Canberra in what is predicted to be very cold and possibly wet conditions.

Just perfect for a game of football.

The Raiders received a reality check at their last outing in New Zealand, but having enjoyed the bye last weekend are well placed to add another win here against the Knights.

After their promising season start, the Knights now find themselves in a battle at the bottom of the ladder.

They suffered a narrow loss to the Sharks in Round 15 and are probably closer to a win than many think however in the conditions I think the Raiders will put them to the sword.

The Panthers win over the Bunnies was impressive and they return to Pepper Stadium again on Saturday night to host the Roosters. The Roosters are on a roll, unbeaten since round 13 and will be fighting to hold on to third spot on the ladder.

If the tri-colours are genuine favourites for the 2015 premiership, they need to win the tough games and this will be one of them. In the head-to-head starts since 1998, these sides are 15 wins apiece. It is not surprising that the Panthers have the better record at this stadium.

This will be the first time these two sides have played this season and if the Roosters Origin contingent come through Wednesday night unscathed, I think they will scrape home here, but by a narrow margin.

The game of the round looks to be the clash of the Bulldogs and Broncos on Saturday night at ANZ. Here are another two teams who face off for the first time in 2015.

Looking at the stats the Broncos have performed the better in the past

when these sides meet. The Broncos are riding high at the top of the table leading the field with 26 points.

They are there because they have grafted out some tough wins this season and face another here against the big Bulldog pack. The Doggies made a triumphant return to their spiritual home Belmore in round 16 where they had a big win over the Storm. They are a big unit but will need more than size and emotion to beat the Broncos. Watch for ins and outs later in the week before making your tipping selections but on paper I will stick with the Broncos who continue to impress.

The Warriors host Melbourne on Sunday at Mt Smart Stadium where the teams will play for the Michael Moore Trophy. The Warriors have again been the unpredictable side in 2015, but have done enough to be just inside the eight and menacing. Melbourne has been out of sorts since thrashing Penrith in round 13.

They have an uphill battle without Slater for the remainder of the season but the return of Cooper Cronk is a big plus. It is difficult to imagine the strain Cameron Smith has been under prior to Origin and this game.

If he sits this game out and has a quiet moment, no-one would be surprised. The Warriors are searching for their point of difference at the back end of the season, and it may come from the strike power in their backline. No easy task to pick a winner here but I am leaning towards the Warriors.

The Sharks and Dragons go head to head at Remondis on Sunday afternoon. Cronulla will be hoping to avenge the 42-6 shellacking they copped from the Dragons in Round 12.

While the Sharks have been playing reasonably good football and sit on the fringe of the top eight, they need more consistency if they are to make the cut this season. They were impressive in patches against

If Manly can reproduce the form they showed at Brookvale, I think they will win here however a place in the top eight at the end of the fixtures is still drawing a long bow.

I hope when you read this, the Maroons are celebrating a fairytale finish for Justin Hodges after 13 years of service to State of Origin.

Whichever way the Origin cookie has crumbled, I know we will have seen another exciting page written in Origin history.

SPORT has certainly been dealt its fair share of body blows in the past few months. Firstly the cricketing world was brought to its knees with the death of Phil Hughes. More recently the rugby league world has been left to fathom the death of one of their own, James Ackerman. While still grieving the loss of Ackerman we were all shattered when we woke to the dreadful news last Friday of the death of the Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh, murdered in the most horrific circumstances.

I scarcely, if ever, remember a period where sport in this country has been tinged by such sadness. The vision of the Collingwood and Hawthorn players, coaches and fans united in a tribute to Walsh on Friday night at the MCG and the tributes across all codes reminds us that whatever the game it is just sport. The effects on the families of Walsh, Ackerman and Hughes is life’s reality - something their families have to live with, digest and process long after the tributes have fallen silent in much the same way Alex McKinnon, his fiancée Tegan and parents are dealing with his injuries.

It should put a lot of things into perspective as we settle in to watch this week’s State of Origin or turn up to watch our local team run out this weekend. No matter the result, the sun will always come up for us the next day. Some are not so fortunate.

This is a lesson that could be well learned by our out-of- control tennis brats. I am sure there are many of us who are just itching for someone close to both Tomic and Kyrgios who are acting like spoilt and indulged children to box their ears or send them to the naughty corner.

Hats off to Tennis Australia for showing Tomic the sideline in the upcoming Davis Cup. Here are two gifted athletes who really do need life to toss them a timely reminder of their place in the universe.

- Casey HARNESS RACING RETURNS PLANS are well underway for the return of harness racing to Warwick on Sunday 6 September, which happens to be Father’s Day. The meeting will be held on the grass proper at Allman Park.

Following the success of a similar meeting in 2014, the Darling Downs Harness Racing Club (DDHRC) and Racing Queensland have secured Sky Racing and TAB coverage for the upcoming meeting.

It will be only the second time a full TAB meeting on a grass track in Queensland has been covered by the TAB. The first was Deagon in 2014.

At the corresponding meeting last year, the club raised several thousand dollars for Relay for Life, and this year the gate takings will be donated to the Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ).

Organisers are anticipating nominations from as far afield as Tamworth and Redcliffe for the eight race card which will feature the $5000 Garrard’s Warwick Cup. Another feature event on the program will be the 2015 CCQ Jackie Bunch Memorial along with several other community cups.

If you are unsure what to get the Dad who has it all then why not plan a day out at the trots where organisers are sure there will be something for all the family. In addition to the bar, bookmakers and normal race day facilities, there will be a wine tasting stand and the Fashions on the Field will carry a prize purse of over $1700. Kids will be well catered for with a jumping castle, face painting and an animal nursery.

LOW SCORES FOR COUNTBACK NICK Milne and Matt Waterworth were both back in the clubhouse with the low score of nett 67 last Saturday and a countback was required to determine the winner of the Stanthorpe July Monthly Medal. Milne got the nod and his name was added to the list of players who will play for the Medal of Medallists later in the year. Runnerup Matt Waterworth received some compensation his lowest gross score of 72 earning him the much sought after Dale Mullins Memorial trophy sponsored by Michael Thompson Concreting. Mick O’Brien was the medal event sponsor.

In a close round, Medal winner Nick Milne also won the balls for best pin shot at 3/12. In addition to the best gross, runner- up, Matt Waterworth also had best gross, least putts of 25 for the round and took the pro-pin at 5/14.

Rob Reeves collected the pin shot at 17 and pro-pins went to Stephen Kay at 1/10 and to Dylan Barraclough at 9/18. In the run downs, it was a ball each to Aaron Simmers (68), Tom Fittock (70), Trevor Ludlow and Chris Fittock (71).

Hannah Reeves was back in the winner’s circle on Saturday, winning the ladies event with nett 74. The young golfer had a great day on the course collecting the balls for best approach at 17, best ladies gross and fewest putts of 25 for the ladies. Lyn Ludlow with a score of 76 was runnerup in the Ladies event. The Ladies run down went to Kay Webb and Tric Fittock.

Two match plays were decided on Saturday.

Bob Watts had a win over Stephen Kay and Rob Reeves outlasted Max Hunter. Both winners progress to the next round.

The club appreciates those members who answered the call to take a turn volunteering in the starter’s box, however organisers are looking for a few more. It is hoped that all members will take a turn in getting the field away.

On Saturday, you will see Ron Batterham on duty as players head out for the Single Stableford sponsored by Reece Plumbing. If any prospective volunteer wants to see what is done, you’ll be most welcome as an assistant.

Tee off from on Saturday is from 11am. Get your name on the time sheet now to avoid having larger groupings at the end of the field.

BUSY WEEKEND ON RANGE IT WAS another busy weekend at the Inglewood SSAA range with a large contingent of shooters arriving from the Coast ready for a weekend of shooting competition.

The club held pistol and shotgun competitions on both Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday in the Clays competition, Tom Donald was on target taking out the event ahead of visitors Rob Ugljesa and Eddie Ugljesa who filled the minor placings.

Junior shooter Ollie Ugljesa managed a decent first time around score of 33.

In the Pistol event, Rob Ugljesa turned the tables on the locals outgunning Tom Donald to win the event. Eddie Ugljesa had to be satisfied with another third placing.

The visitors were back on Sunday for the Pistol event and Malcolm Voyka won the event. He scored a great 296/300 using a club gun. Anna Kim placed second and third spot went to the consistent Rob Ugljesa.

This weekend it is Sunday competition for Single Action and Rimfire.

THOMPSON WINS GARRA MEDAL LAST Saturday, the Wallangarra Golf Club held the July Monthly Medal and Putting competition. Winning the July Medal was A. Thompson who finished the round a whisker ahead of Dennis. McMeniman was on song with the flat stick taking out the putting competition. K. Williams played a nice round to secure third spot.

No pin shots were claimed on the day, however we hear that a fledgling member had an ace on hole 11 mid week during casual play. Due to the overall ability of the member in question, we are taking his account of things with a few grains of salt while seeking further confirmation of the event. This Saturday the club is hosting a 4BBB Stableford.

CITY COUNTRY CULTURAL EXCHANGE IT IS what rugby league should be all about having fun, experiencing new places and meeting new people. We were reminded of that recently when kids from some of the remotest areas of Queensland joined their coastal cousins for one of the major highlights on the Junior rugby League calendar, the Glyn Rees City-Country Cultural Exchange. This year the carnival was hosted by the Coolum Colts.

Queensland Rugby League operations manager (outback) Peter Rafter said teams from all over Queensland competed in the annual event.

Rafter said the team included representatives from places like Mt Isa, Charleville and Cloncur-

ry. “They spent 30 hours on a bus to get here,“ Mr Rafter said, “and they are having a ball.”

Teams in from across the state including Warwick played in Under 14, Under 14 and Under 16 games.

In a wonderful gesture, the host club Coolum donated money raised from raffles and donations throughout the carnival to support the family of Gold Coast Falcons player James Ackerman.

Wattles and rugby league stalwart Glyn Rees congratulated the Wattles Junior players, and all of the Warwick and District ’Chargers’ team, who participated in the carnival.

CLOSE SINGLES GAMES PLAYER numbers were down slightly at Association Croquet in Stanthorpe last week, so singles games were the order of the day. In the game between Val Richards and Pat Schoor, Pat pegged out 26 against Val’s 9. Joy Newman and Margaret Dickenson went head to head in another game which finished 26 - 19 in Dickenson’s favour. In the final game, Grace Howard defeated with Andre Denkewitz 26-22.

Hoop runners took over the green on Wednesday morning with a short game of triples which ended in a close game with the scores 7-6. In this very even game, while all players played well there were no outstanding performances or exceptional shots. After the morning tea break, players took to the green for a first to 13 triples game which ended with the score 13 -10. The triples games are becoming popular, allowing everyone to play together with no to split groups.

Golf croquet is a very social game, and is well suited to those looking for a fun time.

Two players took the opportunity to get in some practice on Saturday. One of the new recruits, Judy Lock is enjoying the game and says she can’t understand why more people don’t give it a go. BIG TURNOUT AT MORGAN PARK THERE was a big turnout last weekend for the National Historic Queensland Race meeting at Warwick’s Morgan Park Raceway last weekend, which was held in near perfect racing conditions.

A total of 193 cars raced over the weekend event, with the most popular car the Mini Cooper S followed closely by the ever popular Torana GTR’s.

Competition across the nine divisions was intense. Local driver Matt Campbell finished in second place in the HRCC trophy and won the Racing Group Q in his Porsche Carrera with a op lap time of 01:19.252. The Jack Lacey Trophy was won by Brisbane driver Simon Phillips driving a Torana GTR Xu1.

SUMMIT BOWLERS HEAD TO COAST SUMMIT Club Bowlers represented the club at Evans Head last weekend. The group of tourists enjoyed the fast greens, salt filled air in the lungs and the treat of warm fine weather. Nine bowlers trekked to the Coast to join their Evans Heads brothers and apparently had a very enjoyable weekend but men - any trophies or results or are you keeping that information very close to the chest? What happens on tour stays on tour perhaps?

Social Bowls were played on Saturday at home base, and there are some results available for those games. Chris Stratford Rob Parker Keith Mungall and Eliseo Zamprogno defeated Andrew McGlashan Artie White, John Shannon and Ray Spiller 24-20 in an entertaining game of fours.

This Saturday the Summit club is holding the B grade Singles. Last year’s winner says his money is on Tyler Sweeney - no pressure.

The Draw for Section One is Brian Brown Tyler Sweeney and Brian Wilmot. Section Two Chris Stratford Trevor Morris and Paul Zamprogno. Section Three Attilio Zamprogno, Phil Davis and Kurt Empen.

The Under 18 Cowboys side had a good win over Wattles at Platz Oval last weekend.

WATTLES STAMP THEIR AUTHORITY THE 2014 TRL premiers Wattles had a convincing win in the local derby against the Warwick Cowboys at Platz Oval last weekend.

The win elevates Wattles to joint leaders on the TRL table with Gatton Hawks and Highfields as the run to the finals heats up.

It was a game where Wattles toughed out a gutsy five tries to three win. Wattles may pay a hefty price for the win with injuries to key players. The win was full of character with the home side finishing the game with just their 13 players on the field and no bench.

The Cowboys drew first blood in the local derby, but after two tries to Wattles in the first half fullback Corey Blades scored in the second half to take the score to 22-6. Justin Croft put the Cowboys back in the contest with a try in the second half as the Cowboys continued their fight back with a try to Braydon Wilson. Tries to Corey Blades, Joel Koina, Brodie Ciesiolka, Aaron Scheid, Nick Morris set up Wattles 26-18.

In the Reserve Grade Game, Wattles shocked the top-of-the- table Cowboys, posting a 38-20 win. In the Under 18 game, the Cowboys posted a pleasing 54-12 win. Millmerran C Grade side continued their domination of the Clive Berghoffer competition with an 82-10 win over the cowboys.

The Cowboys have dropped to seventh place on the ladder but only a point away from the fifth-placed side Valleys. The task does not get

Solid defence has the Millmerran Rams at the top of the table in the Division Two competition in the TRL. any easier for the Cowboys who this round host the Gatton hawks on Saturday night at Fr Ranger Oval. Despite their injury challenges Wattles will start favourites this weekend when they meet Souths Tigers at Clive Berghoffer Stadium.

WIN FOR ZIKAN PHIL Zikan had a good win at Sporters last Sunday edging out runner-up Paul Byrnes. Hannah Reeves followed up her impressive effort in Saturday’s competition to finish with the Best Gross and she also claimed the Pro Pin. Run-downs went to Dick Hilton and Ray Thorn and Terry Brynes picked up the Pin Shot on the third. Meat tray winners were Mick Speer and Angelo Maugeri.

a heads up to Sporters players - there will be no Sporters competition on Sunday 26 July due to the Landmark Golf Day. ALLMAN PARK GOES JUMPERS AND JAZZ THE Warwick Turf club committee is preparing for a big Jumpers and Jazz meeting on 25 July.

The five race card will be one of the final events on the Jumpers and Jazz Calendar.

Strong fields are expected for the program.

Sponsors include Raheen Stud, who is enjoying a purple patch of success with their progeny Carey Brother’s Butchery and Bubbles Barbierato Photography. Bar and bookmakers will be operating and there will be a live music following the meeting from 4.30-6pm.

GREMLINS ADD TO WINNING TALLY THE Stanthorpe Gremlins added another win to their impressive winning tally this season with a 44-10 win over the Cutters last weekend. Killarney has been under the pump all season struggling with numbers each week and that has cost them the consistency we saw in the past two seasons. On Saturday, they fielded a 17-man squad

and despite some strong performances led by captain coach John Trindall, they were unable to match with the competition front runners.

While the Gremlins win looked impressive on paper, their coach Damian Petrie is looking for more from his players who, he says, switched off at times during the game. He was however full of praise for one of the new generation of young Gremlins who has come through the junior ranks, Connor Hartley Simpson. The youngster made the move from hooker to second row and looks to have found his ideal position.

In the Ladies League Tag, the Gremlinettes also posted a win over their Killarney rivals.

This weekend, the Gremlins have another home game when they host Wallangarra. It will be the first time the two sides have met since the game in Wallangarra which was called off by the referee. The Rams have plenty at stake this weekend and it is sure to be a spirited clash.

TIGERS SLIP BACK INTO WINNING FORM AFTER a couple of disappointing results, the Tigers regrouped last weekend for a tough 30-26 win over the Wallangarra Rams. In front of a record home crowd, the Rams failed to overhaul the Tigers in an entertaining game.

The Tenterfield Tigers are clinging to second spot on the BRL ladder in what has been a tough season for the club.

After battling injury problems and down on player numbers, it was a welcome return to form for the Tigers.

The Rams are proving to be tough opponents for any club this season, and a club official said earlier this week they were hopeful of hosting a home semi final. At this time of the season, all clubs and players are struggling with some injuries, and last weekend Wallangarra were without several key players but are hoping to field a more complete side this weekend when they take on the Gremlins.

The Tigerettes continued on their winning way, adding another win to their record and are short priced favourites to win back-to-back premierships.

This weekend, Tenterfield travel to Killarney in what will be a crucial match for the Cutters.
