Rumors are lying!

Right of the bat is iOs 9 at launch. Since the new sotware was previewed at the Worldwide Developer Conference on the 8th of June, it’s a pretty safe bet that the iPhone 6S will have the new operating system out of the box. Also, it’s said that the new system will launch sometime in August so owners of previous iPhone models can check out the new sotware features prior to the launch of the new phone.

GOVERNMENT employees in Geelong have celebrated Public Sector Week 2015 – by walking off the job.

Members of the Community and Public Sector Union, which covers services such as Centrelink and Medicare, downed tools, or should that be pens, for a half-day protest at “attacks on their workplace rights, conditions and pay”.

That’s despite average full-time adult pay in the public sector now outstripping private sector wages by almost 10 per cent.

Double Take recalls the wonder in the eyes of his young son when Santa lurched through an open car window during a bottleshop stop. With thick, grimy fingers protruding from a costume that had seen better (Christmas) days, Santa gently placed a cellophane-wrapped lolly into the little boy’s hand.

Cats fans, that’s who.

Well, that was the opinion of one local news outlet, anyway.

In the miserable wash-up of Geelong’s homeground capitulation to Melbourne the finger was first pointed at the Demons as “party poopers”.

But the next day the blowtorch turned viciously on supporters who left minutes before the inevitable, bitter end on a cold Sunday night.

‘Fans let down Enright’, thundered a sport pages headline. An editorial righteously concurred under ‘Fickle fans let Boris down’.

Somehow the players who actually lost the match escaped accountability.

It’s that time of year when google searches for the current model of iPhone start to rise with a slight caveat; an “S” tagged onto the numeral. So this year it’s the iPhone 6S (however, some rumors say that it’s diferent enough from the 6 models that they may just go ahead skip to iPhone 7), and there is enough new goodies here to make that fancy iPhone 6 in your pocket feel like mere peasantry. Geelong buildings NUMEROUS riddled with concrete cancer will cost owners millions of dollars in repairs, a property management company has warned.

The warning follows discoveries of major concrete cancer issues on the Gold Coast and in other coastal regions.

Ace Body Corporate Management cheif Stephen Raff said strata property stakeholders in Geelong should “get proactive” immediately.

Mr Raff warned that delaying concrete cancer checks could result in crippling repair bills.

A number of buildings in the re-

gion have already suffered serious concrete cancer issues, including Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC), Civic Centre car park and Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Club.

GPAC will undergo a $140 million upgrade after concrete cancer and other issues rendered it unsafe and unfit for hosting events, the Independent reported earlier this year.

City Hall has listed $80,000 of works on the Civic Centre car park roof “to mitigate the need for urgent remedial work to fix major structural issues”.

A report said extreme heat loading of the car park’s top level had caused excessive structural movement, cracking and flaking of concrete, which

promoted severe concrete cancer and a risk of further major repair work.

Anglesea Surf Lifesaving Club faces a $4 million redevelopment plan because the lower level of the ageing complex, set for demolition, has cracked and broken brickwork and concrete cancer.

Mr Raff said recent investigations confirmed what property sector leaders feared for more than a year, with numerous buildings on the Gold Coast found to be riddled with concrete cancer, or “spalling” as it is known to engineering experts.

“The million dollar holes being gouged into the funds of Gold Coast bodies corporate and property owners should be a trigger for all Geelong stra-

ta stakeholders to get proactive now.”

Hyrum Mohring, of North Geelong building repairs business Resourcity, told the Independent the region had many buildings fitting into the age and construction profile for concrete cancer.

“Buildings that are 50-plus years old are at significant risk and Geelong still has a lot of buildings from the ‘50s and ‘60s.”

Tim Stretton, of Grovedale’s Total Waterproofing Solutions said 30 per cent of his work was dealing with concrete cancer.

“The repair costs are high, because you have to cut out the affected area and treat around it and they are difficult applications. It’s time consuming,” Mr Stretton said.

Ron’s backyard art tells the tale of Wathaurong’s fate

By NOEL MURPHY RON MILLIGAN’S backyard has been Wathaurong country for 2000 generations.

He lives near West Park, where a creek once ran from Herne Hill down toward Gordon Ave through Johnstone Park and into Corio Bay. The backyard, in the Milligan family for eight or nine generations, is the subject of his forthcoming exhibition on the bigger Wathaurong neighbourhood.

The paintings begin with an unusual backyard barbecue at his Yuille St home - with blackfellas around a fire preparing to roast a kangaroo.

A swing, a garden shed, fence, neat garden and well-clipped lawn remind the viewer what’s replaced the hunter-gather’s traditional homeland.

Ron’s works are a poignant statement on the settlement of whites in the district, from John Murray in the Lady Nelson and two shootings of the locals to William Buckley, bunyip sightings, John Batman’s treaty, squatters, ineffective protectors and the loss of hunting grounds.

“From Fyans’ count in ’37 only four in 10 remained, their living was denied them, their hunting grounds were claimed,” Milligan writes in accompanying texts.

“Just 20 camped at Tooim Be-al, where the river redgum grew, on land no use to Stewart, in 1852.

“Banished from the town each night, they walked in every day, sold their boomerangs in Yarra St for the pittance they were paid.”

Milligan’s paintings show the stars of the southern sky, Wathaurong with Buckley and Batman’s camp, on the plains around the You Yangs and along the Barwon River, at Portarlington and on the coast.

One verse is especially telling of the last Wathaurong’s fate: ‘Dan Dan Nook and Willem Ba Nip, Kings of nothing they surveyed, On the road to Bellarine, With nothing left to trade.

State Government provide an incentive package to drive investor interest in the Land 400 tender to Geelong.

State opposition leader Matthew Guy recently told the Independent the Andrews Government had abandoned Geelong, providing its L400 bid only “a shingle on a door� at Deakin University. The same criticism was levelled at Spring Street last month when Geelong’s bid was labelled a “laughing stock� that was $100 million behind South Australian incentives to win the work on building new armoured combat vehicles.

We also have the advanced manufacturing skills and capability.�

Ruff justice for attack on cops A POLICE dog handler has received treatment in hospital after an incident at Lara.

Police were called to a twostorey house where a man, who had a noose around his neck and claimed he had a firearm in his possession, was threatening selfharm.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said a senior constable and his newly recruited police dog, Izak, were tasked to keep the man contained within the perimeters of the house to minimise any threat to attending officers.

The man came out onto a balcony and threw a piece of balcony railing at the senior constable, striking him on the head, the spokesperson said.

balcony, approaching the police members in the front yard. As he threw a large paver at the handler and his dog, Izak was unleashed and brought the man down as per his police training.“ The spokesperson said the man was quickly taken into custody for a police interview.

Dog Squad Leading Senior Constable Matt Steel said the handler and his dog did a magnificent job. “Believe it or not but the use of a dog in these situations is considered to be our best non-lethal option,� Sen Const Steel said. “Izak seems pretty happy with himself at the moment. He’s just new on the job and has done everything right.�

Pollies brawl over fort’s future

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FURTHER political fighting has emerged between Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence Darren Chester and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville over Queenscliff Fort.

Ahead of a scheduled visit to Fort Queenscliff today, Mr Chester took a swipe at Ms Neville over her public commitment to

the fort as an operating military base.

Fort Queenscliff is an operational base for the Department of Defence Archive Centre, Australian Signals Directorate, army history and indigenous services units, and the fort’s museum.

“Under our government the fort will continue to play an important role in supporting our nation’s military,” Mr Chester said.

“It’s unfortunate that the state Member for Bellarine has seen fit to cast doubt on the future of the fort through her public comments.

“If Lisa Neville does not support continuing military operations at Fort Queenscliff she should say so.

“When federal Labor was in government it ripped $16 billion in funding away from defence,

reducing defence spending as a percentage of GDP to the lowest level since 1938.

“In contrast, our 2015 budget continues to deliver on the Government’s commitment to increase defence spending to two per cent of GDP within a decade.

“It also builds on the Government’s promise to provide defence with a stable and sustainable funding growth path.”

Mr Chester said he would meet Borough of Queenscliffe Mayor Helene Cameron and councillors to discuss tourism opportunities for the fort.

He also planned talks with Queenscliff Golf Club members about the challenges the course faces from operating on Commonwealth land at Swan Island.

Ms Neville said she was disappointed Mr Chester had used

the fort to play politics.

“Queenscliff Fort is vital for jobs in the region,” she said.

“I’ve already been working closely with council and realise how important this project is.

“It brings together the three levels of government, the tourism industry and the local community in an exciting project that will have lasting economic benefits.”

GEELONG Gallipoli nurses will be commemorated in a special Anzac centenary memorial to be unveiled in Melbourne.

The little-known ‘Angels of Lemnos’ tended to wounded Anzac soldiers on a bleak, windswept island as the first contingent of Australia nurses to serve in field hospitals.

Lemnos was the base for the 1915 Anzac campaign, with 148 Australians and 76 New Zealanders buried on the island.

The nurses, who author Thomas Keneally dubbed “the daughters of Mars”, included Little River’s Kitty McNaughton, who worked in hospitals at Geelong and Bairnsdale before signing on to the war.

Like numerous others from Geelong and the Western District, she found out early in the campaign that the nurses were almost as much at risk of becoming a casualty as the shot and smashed men they tried to mend.

Historian Janet Butler used Sister McNaughton’s diary to immortalise her story in the book Kitty’s War, detailing the tribulations, depredations and achievements of Gallipoli.

Sr McNaughton worked at Cairo, Lemnos and The Somme, where she saw childhood friends killed in the bloody conflict, became ill herself and was transferred to England – before returning to the front.

She was the first theatre nurse to work for the renowned Australian surgeon Colonel Sir Henry Newland and was awarded nursing’s highest decoration, the Royal Red Cross, first class.

Sculptor Peter Corlett has created a memorial statue comprising a larger-than-life sized nurse and an injured soldier on top of a sandstone plinth to be unveiled in Port Melbourne where forces left for Gallipoli.

The Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee’s Jim Claven told the Independent the memorial commemorated the efforts of figures such Sr McNaughton, Violet Duddy and Mary de Garis as well as diggers from the wider Geelong area buried at Lemnos.

He praised their efforts, as well as those of a recent Red Cross and WW1 Nurses exhibition at Geelong’s Osborne House.

Nurses who served on Lemnos also included Victoria Wakley, Winifred Jane Smith, Edith Avice Watson, Evelyn Davies and Ida Mary Mockridge.

Nurses who served on hospital ships at Gallipoli included Hilda Samsing, Mina Alice Bromley, Bernice Loughrey and Leonora Millicent Allender.

Nicky has the latest GC magazine covered GLAMOUROUS Surf Coast mum Nicky Buckley has branched out into literature.

Fresh from penning Nicky Buckley: A Memoir, she’s now gracing the cover of the latest Geelong Coast magazine (GC).

Nicky tells journalist Emily Iannello about her background in TV and modelling before raising a family with husband Murray at their bushy hideaway near Bells Beach.

“We had a holiday place down here.

We’d come and stay and never want to go home,” she tells GC. But home became a workplace when Nicky took on the challenge of writing her memoirs.

“It was an intense time,” she admits.

“I basically worked on it eight hours a day, seven days a week - I was consumed by it.”

Huge ships set to dock in our port

By Noel Murphy GEELONG port will soon accommodate large ships and tankers with draughts up to 30cm deeper without needing to dredge out Corio Bay’s channels.

A high-tech new dynamic underkeel clearance system, using readings of tide, speed, atmospheric pressure, wind and other factors, will be used for grain, refinery and fertiliser ships plying the bay.

Captain Peter McGovern, of Victorian Regional Channels (VRC), said the system was in use at two dozen ports elsewhere around the world, including the Port of Melbourne.

“It uses real-time measurements and has quite sophisticated software,” he said.

“When a ship comes along deep in the water physics drag it deeper into the water - what’s called squat in hydrotechnical terms. This system allows the pilot to watch the ship and indicate where it should slow down if he sees problems.

“The refinery said every 10cm of extra draught was worth $10 million a year to them. This is surprisingly cheap - less than $200,000 for in-

Capt McGovern said the system was an invention of Melbourne’s Terry O’Brien, an ex-academic recognised in the Queen’s Birthday honours for his work with maritime services.

The VRC this week also called for tenders to dredge an area to the bay’s north toward the end of Lascelles Wharf and Refinery Pier Berth Number 4 in a project worth almost $10 million.

“It’s a shallow patch that never got dredged and it’s being done as a safety concern on our part,” Capt McGovern explained.

“If a very strong northerly’s blowing and a ship’s heading to Number 4 it could be blown onto the shallow bit. Tugs might not cope because it’s so shallow and could damage their props.”

The work is expected to undertaken around August, depending on the processing of tenders, Capt McGovern said.

JETSTAR has sold out $29 fares from Avalon Airport to the Gold Coast despite federal court scrutiny of the airline’s “drip pricing“.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) took Jetstar to court late last year, alleging it engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct and made false or misleading representations in relation to particular airfares.

The ACCC alleged Jetstar’s conduct was drip pricing, in which a headline price is advertised at the beginning of an online purchasing process before additional fees and charges, which might be unavoidable for buyers, are incrementally disclosed.

The practice could result in consumers paying above adver-

tised prices and spending more than they realised, the ACCC said.

The ACCC alleged Jetstar made digital representations that some domestic airfares were available at specific prices when they were in fact only available if payment was made using particular methods.

The ACCC also alleged Jetstar had failed to adequately disclose an additional booking and service fee of $8.50 if purchasers used credit cards other than a Jetstarbranded credit card or PayPal. The fees applied to the substantial majority of online bookings and should have been disclosed upfront and prominently with or within headline prices, the ACCC alleged.

unrelated to the syndicate and bought with his own money.

A source told the Independent claimants had been wrangling among themselves in what had become “a can of worms”. The syndicate’s previous modest winnings had been retained in a kitty for future use, the source said.

The Independent believes the system became complicated when some members began making regular electronic payments.

The new lawyers for the syndicate, Jessop & Komesaroff, of Elwood in suburban Melbourne, said they had no instructions to comment to the media.

A NEW $86 million program will cover two of 35 mobile phone black spots around the Geelong region.

Federal and state governments announced yesterday that the region would receive a new mobile phone base station at St Leonards and in the Brisbane Ranges National Park on Meredith-Steiglitz Rd. The allocations left untouched major black spots around the region at Anglesea, Armstrong Creek, Avalon, Bannockburn, Barwon Heads, Clifton Springs, Jan Juc, Lara, Leopold, Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington, Queenscliff, St Leonards, Torquay, Winchelsea and on GeelongMelbourne rail services.

The two new towers will be among 109 erected across the state over the next three years, servicing up to 12,000 households and businesses in regional Victoria.

The black spot-elimination project received funding through a joint Labor State Government and Telstra bid to

the Federal Government’s $100 million Mobile Black Spot Program.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the state committed $21 million to the project, working with Telstra and the Federal Government to maximise the amount of funding available.

Public safety and emergency management were high priorities in developing the black spots program, he said.

Minister for Regional Development Jaala Pulford said the black spot elimination program was a “gamechanger for our regional and rural communities”.

“With an extra 12,000 households and businesses across regional Victoria to gain mobile coverage, this project will not only connect our communities, it will drive economic growth and support local jobs across.”

Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett said the project would provide much-needed mobile coverage to small communities and areas prone to natural disasters in Victoria.

by June of this year.

“In fact, just last month I was told by VicRoads that the official opening of the road would occur on 29 May. “Now we’re told the duplication will not be completed until the spring.

“It is clear that the Victorian Government is not adequately managing this $171m project to which the Federal Government is contributing half the cost.

“This is such an important project for jobs, investment, tourism and road safety. Local residents, business operators and commuters need comprehensive answers as to the ongoing delays with this major infrastructure project.

“That’s why I am calling for a review into the way this project has been managed. I call on the Victorian Government to disclose to the community the full reasons behind these delays and what action is being taken to ensure the next stage of the Princes Hwy duplication will be better-managed.”

WEATHER control and road surfacing are fuelling a spat between a local federal MP and Victoria’s Roads Minister.

Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson criticised Luke Donnellan for slow progress on the duplication of the Princes Hwy to Winchelsea.

But Mr Donnellan hit back, saying he was unable to control the weather.

“If Sarah Henderson thinks she can control the weather to deliver projects earlier, I’d like to see that,” Mr Donnellan declared.

“The Andrews Labor Government is delivering the Princes Hwy duplication in the safest and most-responsible way.

“VicRoads and its contractor, BMD Constructions, have been focussed on trying to get this project completed prior to winter.

“Unfortunately, cold temperatures and wet weather has prevented final sealing on about 1.5 kilometres of the highway.”

Ms Henderson refused to accept that the weather was the only cause of the delay.

“Variability of weather conditions should be routinely factored into major construction projects as a matter of best practice project management,” she said.

“I understand there were other major problems such as lengthy delays in arranging for the relocation of power and telephone services.

$30m centre a ‘factory-saver’ A $30 MILLION joint project will try to save Geelong’s existing manufacturers while creating new “industries” in the sector.

Geelong’s council and Deakin University announced the Manufacture Geelong project this week with a call for $10 million in federal funding.

Councillor Bruce Harwood said the “investment ready project” was a “fantastic partnership”.

Manufacture Geelong would “support the competitiveness of existing manufacturers and create new local manufacturing industries”, he said.

“The Manufuture Geelong hub will be located within the Geelong Innovation Precinct at Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus. It will provide working spaces and shared facilities to

support tomorrow’s manufacturers.

“It will encourage collaboration and provide businesses – from startups through to multinationals – with access to advance manufacturing technology, Deakin University researchers and facilities, front-of-office support, business and legal services and marketing support.”

Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander said progressing Australia’s “smart 21st Century manufacturing capability” and ensuring the “jobs of the future” for Geelong were critical.

“Universities educate and they create jobs – Manufuture Geelong will be an excellent example of this contribution from Deakin,” Prof den Hollander said.

ONE OF Geelong’s top dancers, Megan Blyszak, will defend her national hip-hop dance title later this year after winning a state championship again at the weekend.

Ms Blyszak, co-founder of Geelong hip-hop dance school BC Beatz, won the open audition category at Dance Star Victorian State Championships in Melbourne.

BC Beatz also scored two second places, sending its secondary school and open hip-hop teams to August’s national championships on the Gold Coast. The primary school hip-hop team finished third.

Co-founder Cat Yee said the school’s 28 athletes ranged from eight to 28 years old.

By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors’ Nickolas Skotnica might only be 12 but he’s already living the international football dream.

The under-13s goalkeeper will embark on the journey of a lifetime, training at prestigious football academies in England and playing in a Spanish tournament.

He’s also in line for selection at the national championships in Coffs Harbour later this year.

As a Chelsea fan, Nickolas will realise a dream when he trains on the famous club’s home ground of Stamford Bridge.

His selection to Coerver Coaching Academy means Nickolas will also attend Fulham and Tottenham, undertaking goalkeeper sessions from some of UK’s best coaches.

Nickolas has also been selected in an under-13 Australian Futsal Team to take on Spain’s best in a highly rated annual tournament.

While in Spain he will undergo specialised training to further his development.

But the successes means a demanding schedule for the youngster, including training for a Victorian squad with FFV coach Peter Bradley, specialist keepercoaching with Coerver’s Steve Talevski and Warriors training under Josip Skoko.

A SECOND poll has found that the federal coalition’s grasp on Corangamite is slipping.

The Independent reported two weeks ago that sitting Liberal MP Sarah Henderson had suffered a four per cent swing against her in a ReachTel survey for the ACTU, down from 48.3 to 44.8 per cent.

Corangamite was the country’s most marginal seat at the last election when Ms Henderson won with a .3 per cent swing.

But new UMR Strategic Research polling for the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) has detected a larger swing, with Labor ahead at 58 per cent on a two-party preferred basis.

The poll was run on the issue of the recent China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with the union claiming more than 90 per cent of Corangamite voters opposed elements of the deal.

The CFMEU said voters opposed parts of the deal that would allow Chinese companies to bring in their own workers without having to advertise for Australian staff and to export goods to Australia without meeting the same import standards as Australian companies But Ms Henderson and federal Trade Minister Andrew Robb have slammed the CFMEU claims against the landmark agreement.

Time voters had attention of visiting pollies to talk to the press about what they want but they don’t have time to answer a question from me.

They never make time to stop and talk to the people. It’s like in a supermarket when half the checkouts are closed and the rest are all queued up; it’s just contempt from them and no choice for us.

Get rid of compulsory voting and its donkey vote so they have to earn our votes.

CAN THOMAS Watson (Letters, 19 June) please tell me why individuals in a same-sex marriage could not love and care for each other and plan a safe home environment together?

They, like the rest of us, are human too.

The world has not “gone mad”. Rather, individuals finally feel empowered enough to be true to themselves and embrace their sexuality.

They have every right to be who they really are and enjoy happiness. Has Mr Watson ever considered that this is not a choice for homosexuals, that they were born this way?

Why on Earth would they put themselves through years of torture, bullying and alienation?

As for children, has Mr Watson considered all of the children subject to family violence, abusive parents and those that have to live with alcoholics or drug addicts? These are the real problems for children, which Mr Watson should fight for instead.

If they were part of a loving same-sex marriage I am sure they would grow up to be well-adjusted, resilient, open-minded, accepting and loving people.

Gay colonisation I AGREE with Sharyn Faulkner (Letters, 19 June) that I missed a chance to lobby Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson over the past 18 months.

Like many others, I was unaware of the pressures being applied. I have since been to her office and look forward to a meeting.

I agree with the statement of Pope Francis, that “the homosexual agenda is one of ideological colonisation”.

The beliefs of the past are being challenged, the meaning of language is fractured and our concept of acceptable behaviour is being dismantled.

Educationalists know how new concepts can be introduced and new values promoted: first, propagate the knowledge of the proposed value; second, promote or demand a favourable response; and third, obtain a commitment to its acceptance Today we see school children given knowledge of homosexual behaviour, which I didn’t know existed until my mid-20s.

Under the call for tolerance children are taught not to criticise these practices. This will inevitably lead to some young people in their formative years engaging in experimental behaviour.

Ideological colonisation is thus promoted and achieved.

I pray all parents will be aware the propagation of knowledge is a powerful tool and that, while the teaching of Christian values is being removed from classrooms, a new ideology is being actively introduced.

I call on Ms Henderson to think again and to follow her leader, Tony Abbott, in opposing the agenda of a vocal minority comprising two to three per cent of the electorate.

Morals on slippery slope WHAT a terrible indictment on society when a person can’t write in support of traditional moral values without being called a bigot, ignorant and offensive (Independent, 19 June).

How these people must despise our forebears who left us with this peaceful and prosperous environment as a result of these very ideals.

What is even more shameful is the implication that because these values align with the Bible they should be treated with ridicule and disdain.

Whether people like to accept it or not, this country is only safe and prosperous because our laws and community values were based on God’s word.

Love Is Inclusive (Buckets and Bouquets, 19 June) put forward various Biblically unacceptable examples of why we should embrace the notion of homosexual “marriage” to rectify problems facing many traditional family units. The idea that the effects of one error can be overcome by replacing it with an even greater error is ludicrous.

As for Not A Bigot’s call for religious tolerance, the fact is that even Christ showed no tolerance for sin when dealing with an adulterous woman. He granted her forgiveness, not acceptance, which he reinforced with his parting statement: “Go and sin no more”.

The sad part of all this is the apparent lack of moral conviction among those unhappy with the direction in which society is heading but who remain silent and/or anonymous for fear of persecution.

Perversion of marriage FOR HOMOSEXUALS to argue that restricting marriage to between men and women is somehow unfair to them disregards both history and common sense.

All major religions and cultures regard marriage as between a man and a woman, or in some cases women. To redefine marriage as between two people of any gender goes against thousands of years of Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu and other religious traditions.

Many of us have no issue with partnerships between same-sex couples being recognised at law and accorded the same rights, privileges and responsibilities that apply to marriage, including divorce, property settlements, inheritance and the like. It hardly affects us.

However, we wonder why gay people and their supporters demand marriage equality and that the term ‘marriage’ be applied to their relationships.

This seems to be an agenda issue rather than a gender one.

This provocative and confrontational attitude fosters opposition to their cause, whereas if they were to be more conciliatory and realistic then much of this opposition would disappear.

By all means legislate for legal unions between persons of unspecified gender but call it a civil union or something similar that does not pervert the traditional meaning of marriage as we know it.

Leave marriage alone.

Go for happiness AS THE debate escalates as to whether same-sex marriage should be legalised, I feel that society in general cannot be delegated to make decisions on behalf of other people’s happiness, nor can governments.

We all have been conditioned from an early age to accept heterosexual unions as normal and any other variant as abnormal. But all relationships are complex and should not be subjected to others’ opinions.

The most important issue here is long-term happiness.

Stability, child rearing, security, longevity are all factors but if someone doesn’t want to spend their life alone then the decision to form a partnership, union or family is their personal prerogative.

All relationships are vulnerable to problems; there is no magic recipe for success. Some choose to live alone, simply because it’s easier but certainly less fulfilling.

I have never seen results of any study on the suitability of same-sex parents versus heterosexual couples or naturally conceived biological children’s development as opposed to adoptee children.

Again, I believe that love and happiness are the most important issues. If non-conformist methods must be adopted to achieve this then I say, “Go for it”.

Legal acknowledgement would be prodigious but a plebiscite is totally unnecessary.

Deniers’ conspiracy IS GLOBAL warming a giant conspiracy or is it just as climate scientists say it is?

Alan Barron (Letters, 19 June) took the opinions of Lindsay Smail (12 June) and megaphoned them to whistle blower-level cover-ups requiring a royal commission. Deniers’ arguments all seem to need to allege or imply hidden agendas, cover-ups and conspiracies to carry them.

Tim Saclier (Letters, 15 May) suggested Googling ‘NOAAgate’ to see the truth. This simply leads to more conspiracy sites.

Denier conspiracy-based sites are usually couched in a hero whistle-blower narrative.

Rudd’s return to roots

Waters to spin a web in Geelong

THERE’S still hope for every corporate hack with a secret dream to leave the rat race behind and take the music world by storm.

Indie musician Mike Waters spent 10 years in the corporate world before realising that web development really wasn’t his thing.

So it came as a complete shock to colleagues, friends and family when Waters casually revealed he had secretly been writing songs in his bedroom.

But not just ordinary songs.

The first demo he showed people quickly raced to be the most-played track on Triple J Unearthed and pricked the interest of music industry types both locally and internationally. Mike Waters

XAVIER Rudd’s assault on the world continues its stellar run from strength to strength.

But it’s back home, especially in regional Australia, where the folk/roots star from Jan Juc most wants to strike a chord with his musical breed of social and environmental spirituality.

His current Flag Tour, in seven European countries through June and July, follows sold-out shows in North America and Canada.

Rudd said the tour had earned an amazing response so far but Aussies were the audience who might not normally connect with his indigenous, environmental and social issue themes.

He believed that his first full band, Xavier Rudd and the United Nations, had a role to play in awakening people to a new Australian consciousness of itself.

“It’s really religious, quite a special group, and the shows have been quite ceremonial and powerful,” he told the Independent.

“There are a few elders in the band and I don’t think it will have long, long legs but it’s really special and that’s why I wanted to do a regional tour of Australia. It has a really powerful presence and effect on people.

“It’s an Australian band essentially and Australia is quite a different place in our world. People overseas know a lot of Australia’s history and troubles, where things have gone wrong.

“The band celebrates Australia as one people with a mix of different people from

different backgrounds. We’re celebrating the concept of all walking forward together to create social understanding of how we grow and protect this country.

“It’s about leave the guilt, the shame, behind and giving people that opportunity.

Black fellas have had a lot of hurt, while whites on the other side have shame and guilt.”

Rudd said new album, Nanna, the tour and band represented “an example energetically and spiritually” of where Australia should be as a nation.

For all the album’s politically-charged lyrics in the work, Rudd remained patiently optimistic his message of hope will win purchase in the minds of politicians.

“Our society has almost lost touch with patience as human beings. There was a time when we were all patient and not everyone wants change but I feel that’s changing.

“There’s a lot of hurt and shame that has to die out and that takes time, it happens slowly. People need time to adjust.

“This is an opportunity to meet black fellas, to feel comfortable and walk freely with each other; to say, ‘Can we sit down and have a yarn?’

“People are scared to approach each other, it’s nobody’s fault, they just need to relax.

“There’s a wealth of black fellas and this is an amazing country. The general spirit of indigenous people still passes through all of us and we can celebrate the beauty in all our cultures.”

His career went into overdrive when Vance Joy’s management team and Josh Pyke’s booking agent both added him as a client.

Since then Waters has been busy writing more material and playing intimate gigs around Melbourne in the lead-up to his debut release due next year.

Mike Waters will perform tracks from his LIFE EP at Geelong’s Beav’s Bar on Sunday, with Melbourne musician Howqua providing support.

Port solo show for star Rogers LEGENDARY You Am I front man Tim Rogers will bring his solo show to Portarlington’s Saints & Sailors on 8 July.

An Australian music icon, Rogers has released 10 critically acclaimed studio albums either solo or via various creative collaborations, three of which debuted at number one on the ARIA charts – 1995’s Hi Fi Way, 1996’s Hourly, Daily and 1998’s #4 Record.

Rogers has multiple ARIA awards and platinum selling LPs as well as a bubbling career in

acting, with two indie films released in 2013.

You Am I has had albums released internationally and toured worldwide, headlining shows across North America and Europe.

In addition to You Am I, Rogers has enjoyed critical acclaim for his solo albums, while some of his musical collaborators have included Australian acts such as Tex Perkins, The Temperance Union and The Bamboos.

Rogers has also performed significant roles on television and

in theatre. With Australian Rules Football one of his major life passions, in 2012 he was in his element when he became the face of the AFL Finals advertising campaign in which his print and TV commercials recounted the best moments in AFL history.

North to south

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN HE’S BEEN heading north for more than 25 years but now country singer and songwriter Graeme Connors is coming down south for the first time in a while.

The trip will be a reconnection for the multiaward winning musician who visited Geelong six years in a row for performances in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“This show will give us the chance to reconnect with a lot of people there from the outset,” Connors told the Independent.

“It’s funny the nostalgic sort of feeling that you get after 25 years. You never think of these things at the time, you have no idea that there will be a time when it becomes nostalgic.”

Connors’ landmark 1988 album, North, proved to be the platform for his four-decade career, spanning 17 albums and garnering him an ARIA, Golden Guitars and international songwriter awards.

“I hold the album North very close to me. It’s about the place I come from and the state that inspired it,“ Connors explained.

His back catalogue includes an extensive and impressive array of songs for other artists including John Denver, Jon English and Slim Dusty.

Connors’ longevity, however, had surprised him.

“I had a heart attack two years ago so I’m getting away with murder,” he chuckled.

“But I’m still writing; it’s just part of life.”

So much so that a new album is in the creative throes, utilising all the digital advantages modern technology affords, none of which were around when he recorded North.

The album has since been digitally remixed and mastered from the original multi-tracks, but live performance is still the source of the fire that still burns for Connors.

“You had to be more prepared as performer when you went into the studio because you had to nail it.

“With digital you can take a breath out or change a note. That’s why live performance to me is still so challenging and wonderful.

“Touring is such a great enjoyment because it reconnects me with a part of industry that has changed so dramatically.

“You can give of yourself in a live performance with the opportunity to talk about where you was when you wrote the song, what you were going through, why the song exists.

“Plus, we have five top-line players on stage and these guys double up on instruments, so people get to see great musicianship at close quarters.”

SANDSTONE Café will introduce two new week nights into its opening hours.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT’S POLITICALLY incorrect by today’s standards but Dimboola – the play, not the town – is just so funny it stays in production somewhere.

It remains the prolific Jack Hibberd’s most popular play, written in 1968 in London, ironically enough, despite satirising the country cousins of the Wimmera town.

Under the expert guiding hand of Debbie Fraser, Matchbox Theatre Company’s production of Dimboola will enjoy the seaside scenery of Geelong Boathouse.

Fraser has just finished a run directing Peter Pan at Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

“Oddly enough, I was directing a production of Peter Pan at the Polly Woodside when it was run by Malcolm and Czes Ralton, who now operate Geelong Boathouse.

“And, yes, Dimboola was on at night in the restaurant, so it’s like turning back the clock.”

Fraser said the production would retain the original 1973 setting of the play “in keeping with its naughtiness”.

“Compared to today there’s a bit of cringe factor involved but a few people might secretly be hankering for a return to 1973.

Bounce into holidays KIDS WANTING full-on fun during school holidays should head to Geelong’s new Supatramp.

Full of fun for the whole family, Supatramp has introduced a new school holiday program jam-packed with an array of organised activities while encouraging kids to socialise, be active and learn new skills in a safe, enjoyable environment.

Rock on in the school holidays THE ROCK Adventure Centre is open over school holidays with indoor climbing in a safe, controlled environment.

Indoor rock climbing is terrific low-impact exercise, using all muscles simultaneously.

Parents who don’t want to climb can still be involved by holding their children’s safety ropes while they climb. It’s also a great option for grandparents to entertain grandchildren during holidays.

The Rock’s climbing walls are sculptured and textured to resemble the real thing. Up to 12 metres high, the walls are studded with coloured climbing holds of various sizes and shapes.

Each climber wears a harness with a safety rope attached. The rope belay system provides a safe, controlled descent when the climber wants to come down or in the event of a fall.

All rope handlers must be aged at least 13 years and go through an orientation and safety lesson before they can begin.

Instructors are always available at The Rock to teach first-timers. Instruction is included in the entry price.

The climbing walls are designed to accommodate all levels, from beginners to experts.

The Rock also has a “bouldering” area with short climbing walls only a few feet off well-padded flooring, so no safety rope or partner is required.

The Rock will be open from midday for seven days a week during school holidays.

Children’s holiday sessions run from 2pm to 4pm each Monday to Friday over holidays and are ideal for primary-age children.

GEELONG speedster Steve Motlop is Tiger-bound, if local footy insiders are to be believed.

Connections with football in the coastal town of Lorne say Motlop has told close friends who play for the local club that he has a large offer on the table from Richmond.

Motlop is a keen local football follower, even though it has landed him in strife on the odd occasion.

Hawthorn players outed the sikly ball-handler during the Easter Monday blockbuster with the Cats for drinking while at a local game in Colac.

The new-found success of former Geelong midfielder Taylor Hunt at Richmond could foreshadow Motlop’s move.

The trade possibility remains open while Motlop, out of contract at the end of this season, delays talks with the Geelong hierarchy.

The Tigers remain keen to bolster their midfield and have signalled an interest in the October trade period.

Football manager Dan Richardson told the club’s website that

“That’s not to say money is the be-all and end-all with these decisions.

“We’re halfway through a season and the trade period doesn’t take place until October so how that plays out for us depends on what plays out with other clubs as well.

Warriors host resurgent Hume City

Coming off a 1-0 win over a resurgent Oakleigh, Hume has a very strong line-up and would ranked higher except for patchy recent form.

In contrast, North Geelong put in a disappointing performance against Melbourne Knights last week, going down 2-0.

The Knights responded to their poor showing against Oakleigh the week before, taking control in the first half when goals to Stipo Andrijasevic and Chris Talajic sealed the score.

The Knights went close in the 15th minute via Ivan Grgic heading from a corner only to be wellsaved by keeper Daniel Zilic.

They soon caught a 12kg gummy then boated a feisty mako shark that made several spectacular leaps.

Fishing World Geelong’s Kevin Hunter travelled to Portland where he used electric reels to drop baits down to some impressive depths, catching a 3kg Tassie trumpeter.

Other anglers who fished Portland reported large numbers of bluefin tuna holding in close and responding well to small skirted lures.

On the freshwater front, Wurdi Boluc Reservoir continued giving up large redfin. Ben Azman was casting soft plastics from the main rock wall when he hooked and landed a reddie of 1.86kg and

48cm.

Smaller rainbow trout to 1.5kg were also being caught along the main rock wall, especially around last light as fish moved in on the lake margins.

Lake Bullen Merri coughed up Chinook salmon reaching 2kg on trolled lures. Using a sounder to locate and mark schools of fish was key to boating salmon in numbers, with 3km/h an ideal trolling speed for winged-style and hard-body lures.

Corio Bay should be worth fishing for pinkies over the next week, while the St Leonards area should produce gummy sharks.

Freshwater anglers should try lakes Purrumbete or Bullen Merri for trout and salmon.

JASON Andrew was about to call it quits at the back of Mud Island on Saturday but daughter Chloe, 8, insisted they stay a little longer.

Chloe’s persistence paid off when she managed to boat a 7kg gummy shark on a fillet from a salmon she caught a week earlier at Queenscliff Harbour.

Other anglers searched for trophy winter snapper in Corio Bay over the past week. Channel edges along North Shore rocks produced limited numbers of fish to 8kg, with small, fresh squid baits accounting for most catches.

Soft plastic anglers boated pinkie snapper to 45cm, with all structure around Geelong’s waterfront producing plenty of fish.

Clifton Springs fished well for squid over the shallow grass beds in 3m to 5m of water. Small jigs in natural-looking colours worked well.

Surf Coast beaches continued producing quality salmon. Bancoora and Jan Juc were standouts, with lure anglers beaching fish to 2.5kg.

Bait also got the job done, with bluebait and pippies attracting salmon and the odd mullet.

Ben Stephenson fished for bream in the coast’s numerous small estuary systems. While casting a lightly weighted soft plastic intended for bream, Ben hooked and eventually landed something much larger - a 76cm mulloway that he photographed and released.

Apollo Bay was worth the drive for Aaron Dillion, Ryan Medley and Shane Monaghan, who berleyed on the drift in 75m out from the Cape Otway light-
