By NOEL MURPHY INDIAN business interests could invest up to $300 million in the Geelong region under an India Australia Strategic Alliance initiative.

Delegations to Geelong have been investigating agricultural opportunities across the district but also manufacturing, automotive, property and other entrepreneurial possibilities.

The India Australia Strategic Alliance (IASA), set up to develop business partnerships between India and Australia, has been lobbying hard in state and federal political circles.

The alliance has garnered support from federal Employment Minister Senator Eric Abetz and Indian Industry Minister Madan Mohan.

Alliance chair Dr Jagvinda Virk believes Geelong could draw Indian business investment worth between $200 million and $300 million.

Mayor Darryn Lyons confirmed the Indian interest after meeting a 17-member IASA delegation, led by Dr Virk.

Cr Lyons first flew to Sydney at his own expense to lure the delegation to Geelong, he told the Independent. “It’s still in early stages at the moment. We’ve had a couple of

Dr Virk said IASA regularly hosted delegations to Australia from every state in India. “My focus is always to get small cities on the map and what we’re planning is every month we bring a delegation from different parts of India – we do two days in Sydney, then one in Geelong, one Melbourne and one in Tasmania,�

Dr Virk said. “The first delegations were getting two people, four people, now we bring delegations of 20, 30, 40 people from every state in India. “Northern states are interested in agriculture, Delhi in manufacturing, Bombay in garments, shipping. Every state has a different portfolio of interests.�

Alliance property advisor Manpreet Dandiwal suggested Indian nationals could invest in $300 million worth of property around Geelong in the next three years. “We’ve seen sales of $150 million in Wyndham in the past one and a half years,� Mr Dandiwal said. “Three hundred million in three years is quite realistic for Geelong – there are big companies looking to invest.

TRAFFIC chaos erupted during Tuesdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s morning peak as a plumberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s van broke down just over the crest of the Telegragh Bridge heading into Geelong.

The plumber dutifully engaged his hazard lights but it was to no avail because no one could see them until cresting the bridge. No doubt a few were late to work that morning - including the plumber himself.

And his slogan? 'Prompt and reliable'.

CORIO MP Richard Marles was relishing his role as federal Laborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s immigration spokesman earlier this week, urging the coalition to come clean on alleged payments to turn back peoplesmuggler boats.

As he must have known, Australian spies probably made the payments, and governments rarely comment on national security operations.

So, thinking he had the government pinned, Richard mischievously pressed on - until media reports of similar payments under Labor.

Then it was his turn to explain. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unlawful for the government or the opposition to divulge security or intelligence information,â&#x20AC;? he replied to Fairfax.

Maybe Richard, a former lawyer, could explain, then, why he urged the coalition to break the law.

SOME interesting content in a local quarterly publication released recently.

The editorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s letter on page five promoted â&#x20AC;&#x153;tit bitsâ&#x20AC;? inside. Double Take discovered none, unfortunately, but did encounter some â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;tidbitsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, which can also be spelled â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;titbitsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Then a couple of pages after the editorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s salacious offering was an advertisement

for a counsellor surnamed Quarrell.

As the editor wrote, it was truly an edition to â&#x20AC;&#x153;kick off the winter gloomâ&#x20AC;?.

A LOCAL netballer wants to remove the shortened version of her given name from a club windcheater.

The nickname, pronounced Sint, sounds safe enough. But the spelling, with a C instead of S, pictured, certainly encourages a second look to ensure the correct reading.

Apparently the letteringâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attracted a few double takes of its own.

GEELONG will host a seminar next Tuesday as part of activities celebrating - wait for it - Public Sector Week 2015.

The seminar - at the waterfrontâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s four-star Novotel hotel no less - will discuss â&#x20AC;&#x153;opportunities for diversity in the public sectorâ&#x20AC;?. And Geelong certainly has many such opportunities, with government agencies replacing manufacturers as the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest employers over the past decade.

At the risk of infuriating many friends working in the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s many, many, many governmental offices, Double Take would like to celebrate Public Sector Week with a favourite joke.

Blame game over hospital figures

Gold Coast flights secured, ‘now for Adelaide’

65,0000 extra flyers to secure Avalon’s future

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN NEW GOLD Coast flights will send 65,000 more passengers through Avalon Airport a year, Jetstar has announced.

The daily return service from 26 October is part of a 10-year, $26 million commitment struck between the airline, airport and State Government earlier this year.

As part of the contract Jetstar will eventually increase its flights from five to seven a day and add another domestic destination.

Geelong tourism boss Roger Grant said the new service would open up the friends-and-relatives market be-

tween the two regions.

“Lots of people from Geelong and the Bellarine have friends and relatives in the Gold Coast and it opens up a significant market for us,” Mr Grant said.

“We need it to be viable and run for decent period of time, so it’s important to have strong outward as well as inward passenger movement.

“With the times of the flights this will be a significant step forward in the viability of the service.

“There are a lot of Victorians who have retired or shifted there and this provides an ideal excuse for them to come back as flights commence at start of the spring-summer period.

“We have a number of events at that time when the region is looking its best.”

Mr Grant put up Adelaide as his preferred second destination, which Jetstar is yet to announce under the deal.

“Adelaide would be another good one because there are a lot of synergies, particularly if we can get international flights to Avalon.

“I can envisage tourists visiting through Geelong and the Bellarine, down the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide and picking up a flight to come back again.”

Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) chief Dianne Smith said

the Geelong region would now have direct access to a population of more than 500,000 around the Gold Coast airport.

“The additional 65,000 seats a year coming into Avalon will provide a significant opportunity to showcase all the region has to offer throughout greater Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula and the Great Ocean Road,“ Ms Smith said.

“We commend the Government for working together with Jetstar to reach this outcome and deliver a win for Victorian tourism.”

The Queensland services will depart Avalon at 10am and return 2:45pm.

SIX LOCAL students will play for state representative teams in Australian schools football championships in Geelong next month.

Surf Coast kids Tom Dickinson and Finn Murphy will join Grovedale’s Indiana Parish in the under12s, while Geelong secondary stu-

dents Benjamin Searle and Sarah Chapman will play in the under-15 boys and under-16 girls teams respectively.

Various Geelong grounds will host the championships after an opening ceremony at Simonds Stadium on 19 July.

Hospital fears asthma ‘spike’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG hospital is bracing for an influx of children’s asthma admissions as winter viruses attack.

The hospital’s director of paediatrics, Dr Dave Fuller, said winter viruses acted as a trigger for asthma sufferers, with a spike in hospitalisation for severe cases.

He said severe symptoms had already hospitalised 75 children in April and May after an early onset of viruses this season.

June last year had 44 admissions and Dr Fuller expected a similar spike this month.

“With children there’s always an increase in asthma presentations each winter because a lot of asthma is precipitated by viral infections,” he said.

“Respiratory viral infection is the most common trigger of asthma symptoms requiring hos-

pitalisation. There’s evidence of this being so for adults as well, although in smaller proportions.”

Geelong hospital had 349 paediatric admissions for asthma attacks in the last 12 months.

Dr Fuller said even some sufferers held the common perception that asthma was not so serious.

“It can be life threatening and there are times when attacks are so severe people need hospitalisation.

“People with poorly controlled asthma are more likely to have a severe flare up of symptoms if they get a viral infection.”

Dr Fuller said asthma sufferers could take a number of precautions to lessen the likelihood of a severe attack.

He recommended a flu vaccination each winter and to visit a GP to put an asthma plan in place.

“Parents should always have a plan of what to do if asthma symptoms worsen,” Dr Fuller said.

“Anxiety is also more common in people with asthma which can then feed into the symptoms.

“Asthma is one of the few conditions where there is a clear interaction between mental and physical health. Emotional upset can trigger asthma symptoms.”

Dr Fuller said airway irritants such as cigarette smoke could also trigger symptoms, so reducing smoke exposure was important to managing the condition.

The National Asthma Council also warned people with asthma to be extra vigilant this winter, particularly adults over 65 years.

The council’s Dr Kerry Hancock said higher death rates were reported among older people with asthma admitted to hospital in winter.

City ‘needs a confidence boost’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE GEELONG region’s future hangs in the balance, a new report has found. Geelong had managed to absorb the economic shocks of the last two years but still needed a confidence boost to ensure a robust future, the report said.

The author of Australian Local Government Association’s 2014-15 State of the Regions report was respected economist Dr Peter Brain, who has had close

“The doom and gloom is not completely justified,” he said.

“It is going to depend on what additional support the region gets from federal and state governments.

“Demonstrating confidence will lead to a willingness to invest in the region.

“Geelong needs some breathing space. If the region can hold the line for a year or two and the roof doesn’t fall in Geelong will show its resilience.”

Dr Brain said the figures in the report were in keeping with the

economic shocks to the region.

“There have been some stabilising factors, such as relative housing affordability leading to population growth.

“The stabiliser for Geelong may well be the higher property prices in Melbourne, with people relocating and travelling for work.

“The new transport links helps that and couldn’t come at a better time.

“Another explanation may be the amount of retrenchment pay that has entered the economy but you would expect that to unwind over the next year or so with the full effects of the Ford closure to come.”

The report ranked Geelong at 59 out of 67 regions for economic performance, citing higher unemployment and a productivity drop of 2.5 in real dollars per hour.

The report marked Geelong as a youth unemployment hotspot.

“Unemployment rates for the 15 to 24 year old cohort have risen in the last 12 months (with) Geelong at 18.4 per cent,” the report said.

POLICE have appealed for help to catch two Geelong men wanted on warrants.

Victoria Police said its family violence unit wanted information on the whereabouts of 28-year-old Martin Kim Sloan, who was known to frequent the Whittington, Geelong and Corio areas.

Police described Mr Sloan as 185cm tall and 80kg with a thin build, brown hair and fair complexion.

He was wanted over an outstanding bench warrant, police said.

Mr Abrahams was Ricky James Abrahams known to frequent the Corio, Geelong North and Whittington areas. Police described him as 170 cm tall and 70 kg, with a thin build, blue eyes and medium complexion.

Victoria Police said anyone with information about either man should phone Senior Constable Wakeling on 52 253 100 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Call to unearth steps into park

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG’S Johnstone Park has a colourful history as a dam, a swamp full of reeking animal carcasses, the site of ferneries and sunken gardens – it even hosted notorious bushranger Captain Melville’s Christmas Day capture in 1852.

The park changed a mite over the years. Fine architecture has risen above and within it and continues to do so, while subterranean brick-lined tunnels course below its green carpet.

Foliage, trees and plants have come and gone with the passage of time.

Now Geelong heritage buff

and councillor Tony Ansett wants restored for the public a forgotten aspect of the park’s elegant past – buried more than 50 years ago: a grand 20-step marble staircase that once served as the Gheringhap St’s entrance to Johnstone Park.

The staircase remains hidden beneath the eastern section of the park, which has been filled and raised to street level, alongside a similarly low ornamental garden now levelled and paved to make a pedestrian concourse beside Geelong Town Hall.

“We need to bring them back,” Cr Ansett said.

“We have to get them out and reinstate them, perhaps further

west on the path through the park.

It’s very steep and needs steps.”

Cr Ansett also wanted to reinstate two urns at the bottom of the stairs, which were gifted to the city then resited within the park.

“The Johnstone Park depression used to be much larger than what it is now. The paving beside city hall used to be a beautiful sunken garden – that’s been filled in, too.”

Cr Ansett, who holds council’s heritage portfolio, has been campaigning for the restoration of lost Geelong historical monuments and icons to places of public prominence.

“We’ve got to bring them back, they’re our heritage.”

Toledo push for Geelong ‘link’

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG should strike an auto industry deal with Jeep, utilising retrenched Ford staff and former manufacturing facilities, according to a sister city spokesman for US city Toledo.

Lindsay Smith, a Geelongborn former diplomat and Toledo’s mayoral nominee to an International Sister Cities body, told the Independent industry similarities between the Ohio city and Geelong could become a springboard for exports to Asia.

‘Sister cities could build Jeeps with Ford staff’ Both cities could benefit from Toledo perhaps helping Geelong secure a Jeep plant to replace Ford, he said.

“What immediately comes to mind is the skilled workforce in Geelong which, with the imminent closure of Ford, means that same workforce and the factory facilities could be tempting for Jeep, which has its production centred in Toledo,”

Mr Smith told the Independent.

“It could be a great steppingoff point for the southeast Asia markets for Jeep/Chrysler.”

Mr Smith said Geelong and Toledo should forge a sister city relationship, citing port, airport, auto, educational and historical enterprises common to both cities.

Australian Pacific Travel’s chief since 2004, he has also

worked with Australia’s consulate in New York and the Federal Government’s Australian Overseas Information Service. The former journalist was born and bred in Geelong.

His sister city idea has the support of Thomas Watson, former editor and vice-president of Toledo newspaper The Blade.

Mr Watson wrote in The Blade that formal ties with Geelong

“would almost be worth it just to get a visit from Geelong’s mayor, Darryn Lyons, a true political character who thumbs his nose at convention”.

“He occasionally paints his hair in multiple colours. He went with a spiked blue-and-white mohawk for his campaign poster.

“He lines the walls of his bathroom, floor to ceiling, with photos from his career years ago as a pa-

parazzi. I’m not making this up.

“More showman and promoter than politician, Mayor Lyons is all about enhancing Geelong’s economic footprint. Having lived abroad for many years, he is now Geelong’s number one cheerleader.”

Cr Lyons extended guarded support for the Toledo overtures, welcoming the idea but telling the Independent he could not commit to visiting the city without “guarantees (of) business ties and commitments”.

A SERIES of amusing social statements in a Wallington paddock has amused motorists on Grubb Rd over the past nine months.

A mystery artist has marked significant events and important calendar dates with his own commentary in the shape of timber cut-outs opposite Oakdene vineyards. The designs have inluded a kangaroo and emu positioned to emulate Australia’s coat of arms and a bereavement notice to Carlton Football Club when coach Mick Malthouse was sacked.

The owner of the property confessed to being the mystery artist but declined to be identified so he could continue making his artistic comments with limited blowback.

“Once people know who you are it kind of changes things. You don’t feel as free to do whatever you want,” he explained.

“But lots of people going past have said they appreciate it.

“I’m not doing it for anything other than to amuse my daughters, really.

“That’s how it started and they love it, so I’ve taken it upon myself to throw something out there on a regular basis.”

The Wallington artist has access to a commercial routing machine through his business, enabling him to cut his material into any shape.

“I try to create a theme and hopefully it gives people a chuckle or gets them thinking a bit.”

EPA orders data on refinery SO2 THE ENVIRONMENT Protection Authority will use a compliance notice to extract data on sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions from Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery.

The notice follows Viva alerting the EPA last month that the refinery’s SO2 emissions were likely to breach its licence conditions.

The EPA said it would analyse data of emissions over the previous 12 months.

The authority warned it could issue further notices and undertake sanctions if Viva breached the refinery’s environmental obligations.

Viva posted a community notification on its website showing its 2015 licence non-compliances were under review.

The notice said Viva sought to operate the refinery in an “environmentally sustainable manner“.

“We are committed to pursuing the goal of no harm to people and protecting the environment,“ Viva said.

“We call this Goal Zero. This goal is outlined in Viva Energy’s ’Our Commitment to HSSE’ policy.

Viva said the refinery sought to minimise environmental risks by: operating under an EPA environment licence; maintaining an independently accredited environmental management system; stakeholder engagement, including quarterly community advisory panel meetings.

Fury at call to discuss ‘impaired’ babies cost A HORRIFIED outcry has greeted a Geelong academic’s call for discussion on whether saving “impaired” babies is worth the cost.

Deakin University’s Dr Neera Bathia said Australia must consider the sometimes-lifelong expense of saving “extremely premature” babies against rising pressures on the country’s healthcare system.

The Law School academic outlined the case for debate in her new book, which asked whether some lives were “too expensive to treat”.

“Just because we can save these babies born at 23 weeks does it mean we should, knowing that finite public resources could be spent on other patients, children and even babies born at a later gestational period and are likely to make a greater health improvement?”

Dr Bhatia said.

“The main premise of my book is that the allocation of finite healthcare resources should be a serious consideration in end-of-life decision-making for this select group of patients. With an ageing population and limited healthcare funds, these difficult questions need to be asked and answered.

“I am not saying exclusively that these babies should be not kept alive.

Rather, I am asking if we are doing the right thing by saving babies that are going to require a lifetime of ongoing health care given the fact that we have many competing priorities putting pressure on limited health care budgets.”

Reaction was swift when the Independent reported Dr Bhatia’s call online this week. The paper’s Facebook followers posted comments almost universally opposed to ending the lives of any premature babies.

$50K beer spend LIQUOR giant Lion will spend $50,000 relocating its White Rabbit brewery from Healesville to the company’s Little Creatures site in South Geelong, according to planning documents.

Ten jobs would flow from the new brewery, which the planning application said would help fill rising demand.

“When operating on the same Geelong site as the Little Creatures Brewery, White Rabbit Brewery will add to the brewery village experience,” the application said.

“There will be barrel fermenting, souring and developing of beer styles, using a range of new and old wine and spirit barrels, something we have not yet seen on a large commercial scale in Australia.

“The new White Rabbit Brewery will enhance and extend the craft beer village atmosphere of the Swanston St site while driving additional tourism and visitor numbers to Geelong.”

Debi Lloyd wondered how doctors could deny treatment to the parents of ill newborns, telling them “we are going to make you watch your baby die instead”.

She also raised a slippery-slope argument.

“Where would she like us to draw the line?” she posted.

“Should we withdraw or refuse treatment to anybody who becomes physically disabled? Anybody with an aquired brain injury?”

Other followers were concerned about denying care for babies who would otherwise overcome or adapt to their conditions.

“Not all premature babies end up living a life with health problems,” Lisa Anderson posted.

Katharine Gladman was among the few willing to consider Dr Bhatia’s argument, saying “these are issues that absolutely need to be discussed”.

Dr Bhatia admitted the issue was “polarising” but said it needed “open and honest discussion”.

“These are hard and very uncomfortable discussions to have but necessary.

“What I am suggesting…is that end-of-life decisions for impaired and extremely premature infants should be driven by a more-objective, transparent and tangible approach. In this regard, resource allocation and quality of life should be important considerations.

“Unfortunately, with limited health care budgets these hard questions have to be asked. While saving tiny babies from death may be considered by some as a moral duty or a benevolent act, we do not have limitless healthcare resources to provide these infants with the lifelong care and support that they require.”

Local experts signing up for wellness event EXHIBITORS are getting behind a new Geelong event promoting local operators in the $3.4 trillion global wellness and spa industry.

Geelong Community Health and Wellness Day will feature practitioners in nutrition, weight loss, preventative and personalised health, complementary and alternative medicine, and beauty and anti-aging treatments.

Natalie Pickett, chief of event presenting partner Wellness on Time, welcomed local support for next month’s event.

“We’re so pleased to see the Geelong health and wellness community embracing this event as an opportunity to share their message,” she said.

RET burns up Otways protectors

BURNING native forest timber should be excluded from Australia’s Renewable Energy Target (RET) scheme, according to Otways environmentalists.

“Our native forests and wildlife are further threatened by the re-introduction of burning native forest wood waste as a renewable energy source in the RET scheme following Environment Minister Greg Hunt’s Renewable Energy (Electricity) Amendment Bill,” said Otway Conservation Association’s Fiona Nelson.

“This overturned the 2011 amendment made by ALP government excluding native forest wood waste from the RET.” Ms Nelson said burning native timber for energy produced up to three times more carbon dioxide emissions than coal-fired power.

Accelerating industrial-style native forest logging to provide local and international markets with whole logs, wrongly considered as waste, would destroy habitat and lead to the extinction of native species, she said.

“Destroying our forests for biomass is a way of propping up the declining logging industry.

“We are disappointed that our federal MP Sarah Henderson has been silent on this issue which, along with forests across Victoria and the rest of Australia, could directly affect our precious and ‘protected’ Otway forests. We would like to know where she sits with this.

“Our forests are carbon stores, homes for wildlife, water producers and purifiers, and tourist destinations, not fuel for furnaces.”

Ms Henderson said she was a strong advocate for the RET, lobbying both sides of politics in support of the Clean Energy Council to secure a deal on the scheme.

“This is now delivering investment certainty in the renewable energy industry and securing thousands of jobs,“ she said.

“Consistent with the (federal) government’s election commitment, native forest wood waste will be reinstated in the legislation as an eligible source of renewable energy. This was recommended in a review by the Climate Change Authority in 2012.

“This change does not allow the cutting down of native forests to burn, so claims by the Otways Conservation Association that this will allow the burning of native forest are false.

“The use of native forest wood waste for electricity generation is more beneficial to the environment than burning the waste alone or simply allowing it to decompose.“ Ms Henderson said that in all cases, the supply of native forest wood waste was subject to Commonwealth and State and Territory planning and environmental approval processes.

She said the Government was confident legislation currently before the Senate would be passed in the coming days.

Latest Coles creates 120 jobs with more stores on the way NEARLY 120 new jobs arrived in Torquay this week with the opening of the region’s newest Coles store.

The company said almost 100 of the staff were new to Coles, with the rest coming from the company’s other stores.

Construction of the supermarket also provided work for local tradies in everything from excavation through to flooring

and fire services, Coles said.

Store manager Darren Grootveld, who relocated from Coles Colac, was delighted with his new workplace and teammates.

“Our team is really looking forward to serving local customers in the community and we’re delighted that local trades in the area have been so involved in making the store what it is today.”

Mr Grootveld also praised his employer for introducing itself to the town with donations of $1000 each to Torquay Football Club and Jan Juc’s lifesavers.

The new Coles offers a full line of supermarket products as well as Torquay’s first retail underground parking.

region. The company last year announced $100-million plans for five new supermarkets around the region, including Torquay.

The stores would create 800 jobs, Coles said at the time.

Coles has become one of the region’s biggest employers, overtaking companies such as Ford and Alcoa before they wound down operations in Geelong.

SUPERMARKET competition is ramping up at Torquay as Woolworths embarks on a new development in the town’s north.

The company said its $20 million Dunes Estate supermarket would accompany a new BWS store and speciality shops to create 130 jobs.

Woolworths’ John Robinson, said the company was “delighted” to be close to starting constructiton on its second shopping centre in Torquay after “more than two years” of planning.

The new centre was scheduled for completion by 2017, he said.

Woolworths has an existing supermarket in the town’s centre.

The new addition would add to an existing IGA store, a new Coles outlet and a proposed Aldi supermarket to enhance competition for the Torquay shopping dollar.

Torquay ward councillor David Bell confirmed Woolworths was moving ahead with the northern development. adjacent to the intersection of Merrijig Dve and Fisher St. “We passed a planning amendment that allows development to start in that area. That’s been passed by the council and the State Government,” he said.

“A sign there that said a supermarket was planned there now says Woolworths - they’ve had an interest there for some time.”

Coles this week opened its new supermarket at Torquay Village Shopping Centre, employing 100 new staff. Another 20 jobs could come Torquay’s way from the proposed ALDI, overlooking the start of the Great Ocean Road on one side and opposite Torquay Hotel’s bottleshop on the other.

What is happening to our community with the promotion of same-sex marriage (Independent, 5 June)?

Is the world going mad? It seems life as we once knew it is going out of fashion.

Have same-sex partners asked themselves how they came into this life?

The child of an opposite-sex marriage would answer, ‘Mummy and daddy gave me my life and I love them dearly’. What would be the answer of a child from a sex-marriage, who might be adopted?

How would this child be able to live with other children at school? Would they feel like an outcast?

Anyone contemplating a mismarriage commitment might become one of the members of the community that stops the population explosion.

How many persons were asked to complete the survey finding majority support for same-sex marriage?

Many family members, like myself, were not given the privilege of saying, ‘No’.

Police promises unfulfilled BEFORE the state election Labor Member for Bellarine Lisa Neville promised to open Queenscliff, Portarlington and Drysdale police stations for 16 hours a day by March 2015”.

This has not occurred. Whatever the existing circumstances at the stations, services on the peninsula are far short of what Ms Neville promised.

After the election she publically articulated two positions: to return Drysdale, Portarlington and Queenscliff stations to 16 hours a day seven days a week; and that the budget included funding for 15 extra police on the peninsula and in Geelong, a senior sergeant for each station, a dedicated divisional van for Drysdale and Portarlington, supplemented by a “car” on Friday and Saturday nights, and to man Queenscliff’s station for 16 hours four days a week.

The facts are: policing on the peninsula continues to be rostered from the Geelong headquarters on the basis of operational requirements; the additional 15 members have been allocated to Geelong, not the peninsula; and there will be no extra members gazetted to peninsula stations.

Pastor missed chance with ‘moral’ Henderson

MORAL: Sarah Henderson.

IN ANSWER to Pastor Frank Lowry (Letters, 12 June), I believe that Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson has very moral principles.

A group of like-minded people and I asked for her view on marriage equality. She was non-committal because other groups had approached her on the subject previously, including Christian groups.

She suggested that our group provide her with the evidence to make a decision on which way she would vote should the opportunity arise.

The 72 per cent of Australians in favour of marriage equality are not a minority.

We did not pressure Ms Henderson but allowed her to make an informed opinion.

Mr Lowry wrote we were waging a campaign for “socalled” equal rights. Let me just say that there are equal rights or none.

Many people who marry cannot have children, and full marriage equality is more an evolution than a creation. Yes, there is value in both parents nurturing and guiding their children but not all families have that luxury, such as single-parent families.

A plebiscite on the subject would still require a final decision by the Federal Government, so why waste the money and the time to go full circle?

If Mr Lowery has an opposing opinion, well this debate has been going on a long time and he, like us, would have had the opportunity to approach Ms Henderson to make his opinion known.

He didn’t and now cries ‘Poor me’ because he didn’t take the initiative.

I WAS surprised by Dr Ray Black’s statement that rising carbon dioxide (CO2) was “ending 11,000 years of climate stability” (Letters, 12 June).

Climate stability is not something a paleoclimatologist would be familiar with.

During 11,000 years there's been the tail-end of the Younger Dryas, also known as the Big Freeze, and the Holocene Climatic Optimum, interrupted recently by the Egyptian Old Kingdom Warm Period, the Minoan Warm Period, the Roman Warm Period, the Mediaeval Warm Period, and the Little Ice Age. Only in the 20th Century did Al Gore find a climate change he could blame on humans.

Toxic ploy for warming theory

DR RAY BLACK wrote that CO2 at 400ppm was “positively toxic”.

Really? In most countries the CO2 limit to which workers can be exposed daily for a working lifetime without adverse health effects is 5000ppm.

Today we live in a CO2-impoverished world.

Thousands of years ago atmospheric CO2 was up to 10,000ppm. It is now 400ppm.

Pre-industrial levels were 280ppm, just above the 200ppm level at which plants stop growing and all life on Earth ends.

According to CSIRO research, the higher levels of CO2 over the past 30 years have increased green foliage 11 per cent in the world’s arid regions.

Many growers like to keep their greenhouses at 1000ppm to boost plant growth. With world population predicted to reach 9.1 billion by 2050, increasing CO2 to boost crop yields would be sensible.

Falsely labelling CO2 at 400ppm “positively toxic” was just a ploy to support global warming theory, which has failed after 18 years with no warming despite a 10 per cent rise in atmospheric CO2.

A Teakle on the organ

By NOEL MURPHY HE’S BEEN described as a cross between Bob Downe and Dennis Lillee – all moustache, wild hair and flashing pearly whites – but Barry Morgan’s greatest asset is his organ.

It’s a smacking Hammond Aurora Classic, complementing Morgan’s safari suit, cravat, white shoes and socks, gemstone knuckledusters and gold chains.

Morgan is the creation of Stephen Teakle, a one-time Gordon tech wool classer out of Geelong. His character is an entertainer who puts the boss in bossa nova and the yes in polyester.

And he’s headed back Geelong’s way on 1 August to demonstrate his famous “one finger method”. The technique, he says, is the safest way to get the most out of an organ with just one digit, and a proven crowd-pleaser.

Morgan has sold out live shows at festivals and venues across Australia to New Zealand and Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

He was plucked from obscurity to perform on ABC’s Spicks and Specks, becoming an instant audience favourite.

Morgan has also graced screens on Gordon Street Tonight, The Marngrook Footy Show and ABC’s New Years Eve Pub Quiz.

One reviewer described his show as “entertainment with a capital E“.

Speaking with the Independent, Morgan extolled the virtues of the one-finger style while detailing a little of his early days in the genre.

“I got into music through my dear departed mother, Nancy Morgan, God bless her heart but she did die happy, that’s important,” he said.

“She introduced me to Mr Murchison the church organist. When I heard those wonderful sounds it stopped me in my tracks.

“I was taken, by Mr Murchison, in church and Nancy took it on herself to invest in my lessons.”

That was back in the instrument’s glory days when organs were the epitome of home entertainment, Morgan explained.

“It’s a beautiful instrument, difficult to play but easy to start. I did a mix of Alley Cat, the grooviest thing back as a teen, played Stravinski on the church organ and was excommunicated but that was okay with me.

“It sent me forward on to rumba, samba and other Brazilians – I’ve

seen a few Brazilians, I can tell you.”

The demise of the organ saddened Morgan, who said he was doing his bit for its resurrection – while plugging the virtues of vermouth in the meantime.

“The sponsors are banging on my door,” he said.

“And given how many home organs are in hard rubbish, I need to diversify.”

By DEREK OGDEN SUBARU’S new generation Outback has set off at a gallop, with sales breaking an all-time record for the second consecutive month, according to official Vfacts figures.

The all-wheel-drive sports utility vehicle notched 1180 sales in March, topping the new mark of 890 set the previous month, and is 410.8 per cent ahead of the same month last year.

Nick Senior, the managing director of Subaru Australia, said: “We have had a fantastic response with year-to-date sales up 386 per cent.

“Outback sales are testament to Subaru’s made-in-Japan quality.”

The new Outback comes with the choice of three engines - a 2.5-litre four-cylinder and 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine, and a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel, all with horizontally-opposed Boxer configuration and either a six-speed manual or continuously variable automatic transmission.

Standard and Premium specification levels apply to the fourcylinder variants. On test was an Outback 2.0D Premium CVT. New technology, exterior design and a premium feel to the interior with soft-touch trim sets it apart from rivals.

There’s also a new infotainment system which introduces a wide array of new functions, including speech recognition, all this coming with price cuts of up to 17.2 per cent over superseded models.

The Outback opens its petrolpowered account with the 2.5i, mated with the continuously variable automatic transmission, coming in at $35,990, plus on-road costs, with the 2.0D diesel manual undercutting that by $500. The extensive range is topped off by the 3.6R at $47,990.

Like every new Subaru, the Outback qualifies for capped price servicing throughout the vehicle’s lifetime, not just the threeyear warranty period.

Pulling up behind an earlymodel Outback, it was plain to see just how much the wagon had grown - a roomy benefit for legs in the rear.

Also out back, an electric cargo door aids loading and unloading convenience, made easier by a stop position memory function for use in parking spaces with low clearance, or carrying long objects on the roof.

With A-pillars moved forward and lower rear roofline, a heightened shoulder line add to a solid yet smooth, flowing look.

Rear lights have increased wrap-around and are flat for a wider feel. Not all is limited to good looks.

A large rear spoiler is far from being just an ornament, improving the Outback’s aerodynamic performance.

Lighter 17-inch wheels also contribute, as do an increased windscreen slope, smoother shaped front and rear bumper corners and wheel air flaps, and enlarging and reshaping the body under cover.

The Subaru Outback has a strong street presence and the ability to be just as bold off road.

With a seven-inch screen, factory-fitted satellite navigation and audio, a six-speaker system with distinct acoustic settings ensuring optimum playback, can be touch operated a la smart phone (flick, pinch and double tap), while Pandora internet connectivity is on tap.

Also, the display and control systems of the air-conditioner panel have been redesigned for high visibility and easy use.

In navigation mode, the destination can be set by continuously stating information, from house number to state name; hands-free phoning is through verbal command of numbers or contacts; while in audio, after song selection from an iPod using its title, the user can choose a different album by the same artist.

The latest 2.0-litre Boxer fourcylinder turbocharged unit produces 110 kW of power at 3600 rpm and 350 Nm of torque from 1600 to 2800 rpm.

Hooked up to CVT, transmission control, based on pedal input, between step-less and stepped gearing, improves drivability.

The new Outback, along with the latest Liberty, is the safest Subaru, earning a five-star rating for occupant safety from the independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program, with a total score of 35.99 out of a maximum possible 37.

A comprehensive suite of airbags, including full length curtain, driver’s knee airbag, dual front airbags and dual front side airbags is complemented by active safety features such as ABS with electronic brake-force distribution, brake assist and traction control.

Reversing has been made safer with inclusion of a 160-degree rear-view camera giving an improved field of vision.

The camera is positioned within 60 mm of the vehicle’s centre, producing an accurate monitor display.

Every new Outback is equipped with Subaru’s awardwinning EyeSight driver assist system that uses forward mounted

cameras to help avoid crashes or reduce impact if one still occurs.

On official numbers the diesel automatic is more fuel efficient than the car it replaces - 3.1 per cent better - with 4.1 per cent improvement in carbon dioxide emissions, that’s in the combined urban / highway cycle.

The test vehicle managed 8.4 litres per 100 km in city strolling and a best of 5.2 litres per 100 km cruising the motorway.

There was a faint diesel engine clatter inside the cabin in either set of driving conditions and only a tad more noise on the outside.

There is little urgency about getting going, which was not unexpected with a zero-to-100 km/h time of close to 10 seconds.

The Subaru symmetrical all-wheel drive system always imbues an extra level of driving confidence, especially on twisty country roads, while sharp stopping once or twice on test was never less than accomplished.

Using steering wheel-mounted paddles the driver can become more involved in how the SUV performs by selecting a preferred gear.

In the D-range a temporary manual mode is activated.

When the transmission detects that speed has become constant, it automatically returns to the Drange.

Also starting from rest in second gear is activated, reducing wheel spin on snow or other slippery surfaces.

The Outback was fitted with X-Mode, activated via a switch on the centre console, which takes the all-wheel drive system to a higher level of operation, including hill descent control, giving the driver added confidence on steep hills and rough roads.

This was only reinforced by Outback’s ride height offering commanding views and a sense of safety, especially off road with good ground clearance.

Sales figures tell the story: the new Outback has taken its SUV segment by storm.

After a stint in diesel version with the works it’s easy to see the appeal.

GLASSY conditions lured many anglers onto the water last weekend.

St Leonards was a favourite destination, with large numbers of whiting and squid available.

The area known as Bourke St, just out from St Leonards Yacht Club, produced whiting to 40cm on pippies and fresh squids.

Whiting anglers also caught the odd flathead to 50cm, a welcome by-catch for most.

The mouth of Swan Bay produced squid to 600g, with size three jigs in natural colours working best.

Anglers fishing into the night caught mulloway in the Barwon River estuary. Fish to 6kg were taken from the bridge right up to the Sheepwash.

Fresh baits are key to banking these elusive fish, with mullet and squid particularly popular choices.

Anglers fishing the mouth of the estuary beached some impressive Australian salmon reaching 2kg on the run-in tide. Casting small metal lures or soft plastics allowed anglers to follow schools up and down the river.

Offshore from Barwon Heads, snapper to 6kg schooled in large numbers. Forty meters of water straight out from Barwon Heads Bluff seemed to be the place to go, with numerous boats taking advantage of the calm conditions.

Salmon action in the same area slowed, with anglers reporting few fish working the surface.

Inside Corio Bay, North Shore’s rocks fished well for pinkie snapper. Casting plastics out to the deeper water caught fish to 45cm, with Gulp turtleback worms working well.

Fishing World Geelong’s Michael Moore and Ben McLean headed out from Port Fairy last Thursday, trolling once they were about 5km south-southeast of Lady Julia Percy.

They soon hooked up their first tuna, which took a Samaki Pacemaker. The pair boated numerous fish, all around 15kg.

Casting lures proved a little challenging in unsettled conditions but Michael managed to boat a 15kg tuna on a Sea Iron Pelacus. At the end of the day he and Ben totalled an impressive 17 fish, keeping only two.

Daniel Baden fished out of Port Fairy on Tuesday, finding good numbers of tuna working in 50m. Daniel casting the same lure as Michael to boat a 25kg tuna, which proved a handful on light tackle.

On the freshwater front, Lake Bullen Merri began producing some nice-sized Chinook salmon. Trolling down deep with downriggers helped anglers boat salmon to 2kg on lures such as Daiwa Double Clutches.

Next door at Lake Purrumbete, anglers fishing mudeyes under floats caught rainbow trout to 1.5kg. This lake should soon begin producing trophy brown trout with the onset of colder weather.

Darryl Luttrell ventured up to Tullaroop Reservoir where he walking the banks casting Fish Arrow soft plastics for trout. He hooked a beastly brown of 65cm, which made the long drive worthwhile.

Over the next week anglers should try St Leonards for quality whiting and squid. Port Fairy should also hold great numbers of bluefin tuna, which are apparently proving a little less finicky than in recent weeks.

Freshwater anglers could try casting Fish Arrow soft plastics for redfin and trout at Wurdee Boluc Reservoir.

Humble hero’s 300 reasons to play on

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN FOR A player who has been happy to stay out of the limelight, Corey Enright has been football’s everywhere man this week.

But the triple premiership hero took it all in his stride with the same even temperament he displayed throughout his 299-game career.

He will become the third Cat and 70th VFL/AFL player to reach the 300-game milestone when he runs out against Melbourne at Simonds Stadium on Sunday.

He follows in the bootsteps of

300-gamer John ‘Sam’ Newman and club games record holder Ian Nankervis who finished with 325.

Evergreen Enright was best on ground against Port Adelaide last week, immediately sparking suggestions he could play on next year.

But he deflected any speculation with his usual humility, saying he was not even thinking about next year.

“I’m not really thinking too far ahead. I came into this year just trying to enjoy everything that came along, so this week will be big and I’ll try to enjoy it as best I can,” Enright said.

“I’m not really trying to focus on it too much. It might sound like a bit of a cop out but I’m just here to enjoy my footy and hopefully teach some of the young guys coming through the right way to play.”

Now in his 15th season, the 34-year-old’s accolades rank him as the best small defender in the game.

Three premierships, five All Australian selections and two best and fairest wins – in premiership years, no less – represent excellent value from a 47th pick in the 1999 draft.

Add to that all-round nice bloke.

SENTIMENT plays little part in Geelong’s weekly selections.

So the 300-game milestone that everyone else is celebrating will be lower on coach Chris Scott’s priority list this week.

He will be busy reminding everyone that a game of AFL is yet to be played, not just the Corey Enright Commemorative Match.

Scott as much as promised two weeks ago that Jimmy Bartel would not be risked despite his desperation to be part of the milestone game of his celebrated teammate.

The fact the game is against lowly Melbourne will also be part of Scott’s preparation, ensuring the danger of the opponent is not overlooked in the hype of the achievement.

Geelong got the Corey Enright media conference out of the way early in the week, with the man himself playing it down.

The timing also works well for Scott, being a home game and getting it out of the way before the bye, allowing the Cats to focus on the second half of the season.

The older heads will be able to separate emotion from the business at hand. They've done it any number of times now.

The milestone will be a valuable lesson for the younger Cats on how to handle expectations mixed with sentiment and take on their coach’s hard-nosed approach.

The time for celebration will be after the game, not before.

It will also be a test of whether players can put the excitement of the gutsy win over Port Adelaide behind them and focus on a new opponent.

The key selection headache still revolves around big-man stocks, with Rhys Stanley now cut down and Mitch Clark a week to week proposition.

The startling development of Mark Blicavs remains the shining light in the ruck division, going up against another relative newcomer in 208cm Max Gawn.

The big Dee might win the hit outs but will have no hope of keeping up with Blicavs around the ground.

Despite a lack of wins, Melbourne has played more-attractive football this season.

But even the Melbourne Football Club website predicts a Geelong win by 32 points.

Warriors take confidence into battle against Knights

By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors will enter its round 17 clash against Melbourne Knights with renewed belief after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Green Gully last week.

The Knights have had a roller coaster in terms of form since the season’s midway mark, with a draw, a win then a loss in their heaviest defeat last week, 4-1 to Oakleigh.

Regardless of off-field friendships between the two teams, Sunday’s match at Knights Stadium will be hotly contested.

The Warriors’ win against Green Gully in a scrappy affair was far from purist’s dream match but gave the lo-

cal lads something to build their confidence and keep a clean sheet.

North Geelong started the match with some fluid moves as new signing Gareth Richards closed down defenders, forcing early mistakes.

The Warriors’ pressure brought on the opener when Reardo Luka received a ball courtesy of Green Gully’s inability to clear the lines and spun onto his right foot from the edge of the box to drill past the keeper.

Chances were few for either side in the first half amid numerous turnovers in attacking areas.

Yusuf Yusuf had two opportunities to bring more joy to the North Geelong faithful in the 52nd minute, needing only a tap-in from a Gareth Richard

cross. But Yusuf put too much on it, hitting the bar and sending the ball back into play.

With the second half wearing out, Green Gully brought on Luc Jeggo to spark his side. He repeated Yusuf’s move in hitting the woodwork, initiating a big late charge from the visitors.

But North Geelong custodian Daniel Zilic denied the surge, stopping everything thrown at him. Zilic’s lastminute flying save allowed the Warriors to maintain their 1-0 lead and claim the win.

Coach Micky Colina said the Warriors showed “signs that we’re growing up” with the victory.

“We can use this to turn our fortunes around from here.”
