Stars shine for Geelong team’s innovative musical radio show on ABC

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE CREAM of Australian musical theatre talent will feature in a Geelong production team’s innovative new radio program.

ABC Radio National will air The Space Company’s Getting on with the Show, a musical going behind the scenes to discover what it takes to step into the stage spotlight.

The production stars leading performers Trevor Ashley (Les Miserables), Alinta Chidzey (Mary Poppins), Stefanie Jones (Once) and Geelong’s Robert Tripolino (NED).

Geelong West’s Joel Carnegie created Getting on with the Show as the story of a reporter who goes backstage on opening night to investigate the back stories, anecdotes and personalities of the theatrical world.

Tripolino and musical theatre-writing partner Hugo Chiarella produced the program’s original show tunes.

“This is a production where musical theatre meets a fresh approach to radio storytelling,” Carnegie said.

“This is a story about courage, of taking a chance.

“We’ve got some fine Australian talent in this production but perhaps audiences haven’t heard them quite like this before.”

The production is set within the bowels of the theatre, with location recordings sourced from Geelong Performing Arts Centre.

Geelong’s Darylin Ramondo has also worked on the show as a producer.

ABC RN’s Radiotonic scheduled Getting on with the Show to debut at 11am today, with a repeat 3pm Sunday.

Commission into Union Corruption over reports the Australian Workers Union invoiced employers for staff subscriptions while he was the union’s leader.

Mr Marles’ spokesperson,

Lidja Ivanovski, issued a terse statement, saying only: “We don’t intend to provide a running commentary on the Abbott Government’s royal commission”.

The response echoed Mr Shorten’s rote “running commentary” reply to media queries this wee k about the royal commission.

WHATEVER is behind ex-mayor Keith Fagg’s call to replace Geelong’s democratically elected councillors with commissioners?

Double Take asks only because his vague explanation in a newspaper column this week was long on rhetoric but short on specifics. Like what council had actually done wrong.

Keith said council’s structure of 12 ward councillors and a directly-elected mayor was somehow “broke�, Keith during his brief leaving them unable to mayoral reign. “genuinely create a clear, shared sense of purpose nor promulgate that purpose constructively together�. Huh? Undefined “outside imperatives and diverse agendas� were blamed, while a ward-funding investigation that actually cleared councillors of wrongdoing was supposedly evidence of “governance failure�.

Keith’s solution was to hastily appoint commissioners pending a review of council, including “the number and nature of members�.

He might lack detail but Keith’s 10 months as Geelong’s first directly elected mayor surely taught him a golden rule of politics: never order a review unless you already know the outcome.

It keeps going, of course.

It’s nothing for people to keep posting messages to their dearly departed relatives, friends or colleagues.

Nostalgia, recollections, petitions, simple g’days - it might sound cold but social media has the remarkable knack of keeping people connected, in its way, with those who have passed to a higher calling.

A mate of mine departed

‘Wish you could have seen this’, posting memories of old times and watering holes, still pushing issues of common interest.

Commemorations, anniversaries and suchlike that once might have been noted in newspaper columns are now posted to the deceased’s Facebook site. People are still checking in.

Last week dozens of people still grieving the unexpected death of another friend, Geelong chef Keegan Hynes, in January marked

what would have been his 29th birthday.

A former head chef at Ripples on the Bay, as well as the Batesford Hotel and Cafe Go, Keegan was recalled variously by old mates: “Happy birthday my dear friend up in heaven cooking for angels but I wish you were here so I could get one hug,” posted a friend.

“I wonder what shenanigans he’s getting up to!? Celebrations are in order for this special day! Cheers big fella,” said another.

“Happy birthday buddy.

You won’t get older, but we will always remember you,” said yet another.

His mother’s sentiments were heart-tugging and poignant but a telling example of where social media now stands in our psyche. They were also charmingly indicative of the gulf Keegan left in his wake: “The only gifts today will be the gifts you left behind; the laughter, joy and happiness, precious memories, the best kind.”

Drug busts POLICE have charged 13 people with drug and weapons offences on the Bellarine Peninsula this month.

A RISE in car thefts has boosted RACV insurance claims in Geelong, the motoring organisation has revealed.

The RACV said it paid out an additional $214,000 last year on 23 additional thefts compared to 2013, with 69 stolen in Geelong and Surf Coast last year.

NEW TIMETABLES will force many public transport users to change their Geelong travel patterns from next weekend.

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) will introduce the changes to coincide with the opening of Regional Rail Link on 21 June.

Foreign Minister visits after Henderson’s poll slide Doubt over ‘dry, warm’ forecasts

Bishop’s move to help MP

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN MP SARAH Henderson has enjoyed senior Liberal support from visiting Foreign Minister Julie Bishop after polling detected a four per cent swing away from her in Corangamite.

Ms Bishop attended a community morning tea in Grovedale before a speaking engagement at Deakin University.

The visit followed a ReachTel poll for the ACTU finding that voter support for Ms Henderson had dropped from 48.3 to 44.8 per cent.

Labor was also down, 32 to 31.5 per cent.

Corangamite was the country’s most marginal seat at the last election when Ms Henderson needed a swing of .3 per cent to win. The latest poll showed a one per cent move from the Liberals to the Greens and three per cent to an enlarged group of undecided voters.

Almost 50 per cent of respondents expected more cuts to health and education and 62.5 per cent thought the government had not done enough to create jobs. Almost 30 per

cent of Liberal voters agreed the Abbott Government was not doing enough on job creation.

Deakin University politics lecturer Dr Geoff Robinson said Ms Henderson had always been thought of as a Malcolm Turnbull supporter “but Julie Bishop could be a good fit”.

Ms Bishop has been a regular visitor to Corangamite, unlike Mr Turnbull.

“Socially and based on their expressed political views, they seem to be a good fit,” Dr Robinson said.

“They’re both middle-ofthe-roaders, whereas Tony Abbott’s on the conservative right of the party.”

Dr Robinson said Corangamite provided an accurate reflection of the national mood.

“The poll seems to match what’s happening nationally.

The nation’s mirrored pretty closely in Corangamite, with its mix of city, country and urbanising coast.

“It will be interesting to see what happens as we get closer to the federal election (due after August next year).”

A GEELONG weatherman has turned up the heat on official forecasts of a dry, warm winter across the region.

Geelong Weather Services director Lindsay Smail doubted the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) predictions “because of the poor results of such outlooks in the past”.

He said the bureau itself “admitted a very low accuracy level” for Geelong winter rain predictions and its forecast for totals below long-term averages this year had “several problems”.

An El Nino event, predicted for 2015, was never a guarantee of a dry winter in Geelong, Mr Smail said, while warm Indian Ocean temperatures could produce “good falls” over southern Victoria any time of year.

He also questioned the bureau’s choice of historical data, saying the trend in Geelong was toward wetter winters.

“In 1990 the 30-year figure was 132mm and decreasing, by 2014 for the previous 30 years it was 137 mm and rising.

“The point is that no good scientific conclusion can be made on the basis of questionable Lindsay Smail data.”

Mr Smail also had “misgivings” about the bureau’s prediction of a 65 to 75 per cent chance of above-average winter temperatures.

“The bureau admits moderate historical accuracy for this outlook, hardly confidence-inspiring.”

Mr Smail said the bureau “conveniently ignored” how temperatures readings changed after it moved Geelong’s automatic weather station from a rural setting near Grovedale to urban Breakwater.

“Since 2011, when this move took place, many minimum temperatures have increased over the earlier figures.”

The weather station was now subject to an “urban heat-island effect” from surrounding infrastructure, which produced higher minimum temperatures, Mr Smail said.

Mr Smail writes a monthly weather summary for the Geelong Independent.

GEELONG-BASED Costa Group is poised to launch an initial public offering (IPO) of shares to raise half a billion dollars or more as the private produce giant prepares to list on the stock exchange.

Consultants Goldman Sachs, UBS and CBA Equities are issuing research reports prior to a float launch expected any day and ASX trading next month.

The IPO follows lengthy deliberation over a full private sale as the Costa family’s ageing heavyweights eye retirement and a public float.

The group has been halfowned since 2012 by the US private equity firm Paine & Partners.

Brothers Robert, Frank and Anthony Costa own the other 50 per cent but retained overall control under the deal.

Robert Costa told the Independent recently that an overseas

Today the group is the country’s largest grower of tomatoes, table grapes, citrus fruit, blueberries, raspberries, bananas, mushrooms and other fruit and vegetables.

Costa Group supplies Coles and Woolworths, independent grocers and other industry players, with some 20 per cent of its produce sold overseas to Asia, Europe, North America and South America.

By NOEL MURPHY GIANT billboards advertising sex are allowed to distract drivers but not roadside memorials to crash victims, according to Bannockburn road safety advocate Norm Robinson.

The former face of a TAC road safety campaign yesterday lashed out at VicRoads plans to tighten the law regarding roadside memorials, saying they were the best advertising possible to

encourage safer driving.

Mr Robinson said the TAC campaign that featured him at son Luke’s roadside memorial on Anakie Rd was its most successful ever.

“It’s equivalent to ripping up my son’s grave,” he told the Independent.

“If they’re not effective why were they the main feature of the most successful TAC campaign?

The roads authority also wants memorial owners/families to bear any costs related to traffic management or mediation where disputes arise. Crosses would have to be timber, white or neutral in colour, while offensive symbols, weapons, beer cans, alcohol and other objects that might offend would be banned.

A VicRoads survey has found that 63 per cent of people supported roadside memorials and 61 per cent believed they encouraged safer driving . Fifty-four per cent found the memorials distracting while driving.

The charity officially opens its new centre at Grovedale on Sunday, with staff and volunteers looking forward to the fresh start.

Agency chief Des Younghusband said the new premises would allow UnitingCare to continue providing various support services to “struggling families and vulnerable individuals” in Geelong.

“We’re the leading emergency relief agency in the Geelong district and it’s vital we’re able to continue supporting the significant needs in our area. Costs could ‘gag’ communities

Ms Neville, also state Labor’s Member for Bellarine, has provided a letter of support for DCSCA as it battles a costs claim in Victorian Civil and Ad-

The Independent reported last month that a petition was urging VCAT to rule out imposing costs against DCSCA over its failed bid to stop development of a service station at Drysdale.

“It is now of serious concern to me that this community based organisation in representing the

views of the community is currently facing unknown legal costs,” she said.

“In addition, the awarding of costs against community organisations like DCSCA would act as a serious disincentive for any like community organisation involving itself in a local planning matter to the possible detriment

of the community and the planning outcome.

“I register my concern that a volunteer-run community organisation in trying to represent and express concerns of its community is now faced with unknown but possibly extensive legal costs.”

Ms Neville said she shared the “extensive concern… and opposi-

tion within the local community” over the proposed service station.

“I have worked with DCSCA for many years and I know the organisation has accepted and carried out the role of advocating for the local community responsibly and transparently.

“DCSCA is a well-managed professionally operated organ-

isation that does consult with the local community and is seen to represent the views of that community across a range of issues”.

The petition, which Drysdale’s Aaron Cooper initiated, has attracted more than 320 supporters and aims for 500 signatures.

The petition says awarding costs against DCSCA would likely mean the end of the organisation, which would be “a huge loss to the community”.

Exciting outlook as work on $45m city project enters final few months

By NOEL MURPHY THE VIEWS from the giant truncated dome rising above Geelong’s Johnstone Park are as striking as the images it presents itself.

Brutalist architecture from the 1970s, colonial edifices dating to the Gold Rush and the verdant canopy of the park sit wonderfully with views across CBD rooftops and streets and the broad vista of Corio Bay. ARM Architecture’s soaring design for the $45 million building incorporates everything from massive custom-designed hexagonal panelling across its geodesic shape to secreted solar panelling and super-speed wi-fi.

Galleries, conference, study and meeting spaces, storage, kids’ areas, function rooms, a café, a feature reading wall and expanses of glass panelling have been cleverly integrated into a design that ARM’s Wayne Sanderson said was aimed at linking Johnstone Park with the spaces inside.

Stretching over 6000 square metres, the library and heritage centre is now 75 per cent complete and expected to open before the year’s end.

more long-term, “which is great news.”

Geelong Regional Library Corporation chair Andy Richards said the centre would be a “world-class facility”.

and inspiring space full of events, technology and specialist collections all presented by highly qualified and expert staff,” he said.

“We’re all looking forward to blowing away any preconceptions which may still exist about what a library is.”

GEELONG councillors should stop politicking and back mayor Darryn Lyons in promoting the city, according to state opposition leader Matthew Guy. “They need to stop fighting with the mayor,” the Liberal MP told the Independent.

“The mayor is trying and they actually need to stop fighting with him and playing politics. He’s an absolutely great asset for raising Geelong’s profile.

Cr Lyons, a Liberal party member, has repeatedly clashed with Labor-aligned councillors including Andy Richards. Local Labor MPs have also taken shots at the mayor, including Member for Geelong Christine Couzens who used parliamentary privilege to label him a “one-trick pony”.

CORIO MP Richard Marles wants a historic sewer aqueduct preserved through improved public access.

Mr Marles told federal parliament the “remarkable” ovoid sewer aqueduct over the Barwon River near Breakwater should be celebrated in its centenary year.

“This is a structure (that) was commissioned by the Geelong Waterworks and Sewerage Trust. It is 756 metres long, consisting of a series of trusses which cantilever from 14 concrete corniced piers,“ he said.

“It was built between 1913 and 1915, which means that this year is the centenary. It is a piece of construction on an absolutely grand scale.”

Mr Marles said the design, inspired by Scotland’s Firth of Forth Bridge, was an early and innovative use of reinforced concrete on a “grand scale”.

Melbourne University associate professor of architecture Dr Miles Lewis had called the aqueduct internationally significant and one of the most extraordinary engineering structures in Australia, Mr Marles said.

“It is hardly viewed by anybody. You can see it as you as a drive on the Barwon Heads Rd down to Barwon Heads.

“I just get this feeling that wherever Dan is he must be somewhere warm, somewhere that would basically allow him to live rough if he had to.

“We’ve done New South Wales and Victoria of course and right up to Cape Tribulation in Queensland and Cairns and all those tropical places up there but we’ve never been to Darwin.

“Dan had never been to the territory as far as we know. But we just thought Darwin could be a place he could well be.

“It’s a casual lifestyle, maybe some casual jobs are easy to get, so it’s always just plagued me that we hadn’t come here.”

THE MYSTERY of missing Geelong man Daniel O’Keeffe has shifted focus to the Northern Territory.

The disappearance of the marial arts expert has become an international case as his family maintains an extraordinary search, now homing in on the Top End. Mr O’Keeffe vanished on 15 July 2011 but his family says he appeared on surveillance camera footage at a Queensland medical centre the following November.

He had been suffering depression when he disappeared without taking any belongings other than his mobile phone.

Mr O’Keeffe was last seen talking with his father in the kitchen of the family home, sister Loren told Daily Mail Australia this week.

“Ten minutes later mum came downstairs to say good morning to Dan and he had already gone.

“His wallet was still in his bedroom full of money. Nobody panicked because he was then 24 years old and had his own business – he was a Brazilian jujitsu mixed martial artist who ran his own academy in Werribee.”

Ms O’Keeffe said the family had spent the past four years travelling around Australia searching for her brother.

“The area we decided (to now search) has been most difficult to reach (and) is around the northern and north-western regions of the country.

I WRITE to express my disappointment over language used in one of the contributions to Buckets & Bouquets in last week’s Independent.

The writer called for the “extermination of the mall rats”, which was language that I find targeted, judgemental, unhelpful and offensive.

By nature, young people are on a steep learning curve.

They take risks, make mistakes and test boundaries.

Our responsibility as a community is to ensure they stay safe and to create opportunities for them to be accepted by the wider community and to integrate into society, not to name-call or perpetuate stereotypes such as “mall rats”, which Geelong must no

Change comes from strong leadership, which is the role of everyone using or reporting on the space.

As a Christian creationist, I am in awe of the process of human creation, the irreducible complexity of the human birth process and the value of having both birth parents nurturing and guiding their offspring. These can only be possible under the current definition of marriage.

I also see in the complementary differences between male and female the ability to nurture boys and girls for a role in our pluralistic society.

I urge Sarah Henderson to be guided by moral principle, not a vote-threatening minority.

The least we should demand is a plebiscite on the matter, allowing those who have an opposing view to be heard.

Canberra base worth cost FAR FROM the opinion expressed in the letter headlined ‘Gee(21), that’s costly’ (Independent, 5 June), establishing a permanent G21 presence in Canberra, manned by top-class personnel, would represent rate-payer monies well spent.

Given the upcoming 2016 federal poll, a swinging Corangamite, senate complexities and the shortterm nature of the political cycle, the time is right for G21 to step up its regional advocacy role.

Predictable annual visitations, sometimes playing second fiddle to a sports agenda, become more of the same as in essence they’re replicated nationwide by similar municipal bodies.

As it stands, the region requires one strong, informed and united advocacy voice. With appropriate staffing, G21 is best-placed for this role.

Avalon Airport international flight accreditation and commensurate infrastructure funding, defence contracts, a faster broadband rollout, realistic drug addiction programs, additional Great Ocean Road maintenance and speedier construction of the Winchelsea-Colac Princes Hwy duplication are but some of the agenda items that a more-aggressive and residentially-based G21 could pursue in Canberra.

Young drivers the real danger MICHAEL J Gamble (Letters, 5 June) knows nothing about me except that, because I’m 74, I should be retested annually for my driver’s licence.

Congratulations to Mr Gamble if he has never made even the most minor mistake while driving.

Perhaps his rant should have been for the retesting of younger drivers who, according to newspapers, either kill themselves, passengers or other road-users almost daily.

English have had a gull-full HAVING spent six weeks in an English seaside town last northern summer, I can inform the academics at Deakin University how one species of seabird finds food in its native environment.

This subject was raised in Double Take (Independent, 5 June).

British gulls are much larger and stronger than our variety and are not regarded with affection by the townspeople.

The town crier in Ilfracombe, Devon, exhorted tourists not to feed the seagulls, adding: “If you like them that much, take some home with you”.

We witnessed the revenge of the gulls when the off-duty crier was enjoying a pastie at the harbour. A fierce gull swooped in and swiped a large piece and then made a return sortie to grab another helping.

These raucous, aggressive birds find food by ferociously thieving victuals from humans, hence their unpopularity. Even UK Prime Minister David Cameron has lost ham from his sandwich to marauding gulls.

In comparison, our gulls, sometimes bossy and cheeky when vying for potato chips, will not provide such exciting research for the Deakin investigators.

Ocean acidity impossible...

DON BARTLETT (Letters, 5 June) will be relieved to know the oceans have never become acidic despite enormous changes in atmospheric CO2 over the past billion years, up to 25 times the present 400ppm.

The oceans are strongly buffered by dissolved minerals including calcium. Calcium carbonate sinks to the ocean floor as CO2 is dissolved, so the pH balance is retained.

While oceans are full of calcium they can never become acid. We know this because of the geologic record and the existence of shelly fossils, which would have dissolved long ago had the oceans become acid.

Ocean acidification has been grossly exaggerated to support the claim of global warming, which after 18 years of unchanged global temperatures is now seen to be spurious.

At 400ppm it is positively toxic, ending 11,000 years of climate stability and acidifying our oceans.

In trying to draw climate deniers into recognising that another reason to rapidly transition from fossil fuels is to preserve marine ecosystems (Letters, 1 May), I erroneously thought they would have to admit to the logic. After all, the science is simple: CO2 dissolves in water to form carbonic acid, so oceans will acidify as atmospheric CO2 rises.

Yet Tim Saclier (Letters, 15 May) quoted from a PHD student’s document that erroneously juxtaposed historical pH values with a controlled scientific study to conclude that ocean acidity had actually fallen in the previous century. The analysis is invalid.

Mr Saclier deliberately overlooked peer-reviewed literature, instead choosing an article from the climate-denier community.

Why would anyone do that when so much is at stake?

Patient transport career option GEELONG workers made redundant in the changes to the manufacturing industry could find a rewarding career in non-emergency patient transport.

Wodonga TAFE offers either a Certificate III in Non-Emergency Client Transport, which can lead to a job or a Diploma of Paramedical Science (Ambulance).

The courses offer opportunities for a range of participants from school leavers to job seekers and mature-aged workers.

School leavers can use the courses as an alternative pathway to university to study the Bachelor of Paramedics and use the qualification as a source of work while studying.

Job seekers can do the Certificate III course to upgrade or change their skills to become a non-emergency transport officer.

The roles are suitable for mature age workers looking for a career change or who have been made redundant.

The hands-on training includes extensive scenario-based work with driver training using a modern ambulance vehicle also undertaken.

Wodonga TAFE also makes available its excellent relationships with industry, moderating and validating the course with peak industry bodies.

The diploma also offers indus-

try placements in the non-emergency patient transport industry Non-emergency transport officers travel from hospital to hospital or to appointments while maintaining an appropriate level of knowledge and care for clients.

The Wodonga TAFE courses are at its West Melbourne campus, with information sessions at 6.30pm on 22 and 29 June.

FOOLISH: Alpine’s Yuck tour arrives in Geelong this month. tian O’Brien said musical inspiration for Yuck came from a desire to push the pop genre to new, often weird, places.

“Most of the music of the songs came from a textural or harmonic idea that I was curious about. I wanted to see if certain things would work in a pop song.”

The new album follows the Melbourne band’s debut A Is For Alpine, which peaked at number one on iTunes and 11 on the ARIA album charts. The

release also won iTunes Alternative Australian Album of the Year.

The US release of A Is For Alpine had the band trekking back and forth across America, playing alongside the likes of Grouplove, Empire of the Sun and Crystal Fighters. A coveted spot on US TV’s Jimmy Kimmel Live was another highlight.

The title of the new album was drawn from band’s reactions to firstworld problems, such as awkward dates, a distaste for romance, lust

when it was lost, plastic vanity, foolish attraction and ego against egos.

As the lyrics of Foolish tell us: “You brought too much, too much, metaphor to the relationship, “To what I see, to how I kiss.

Yuck.”

Fans shouldn’t expect any such distaste, other than the commentary, with the Barwon Club show, which is more likely to be, as Rolling Stone suggested, a “languid roll out in an endless temptation of silk sheets”.

THE WHOLE Brazil thing has a sensual groove and flair expected of somewhere like Rio, which features heavily in Alpine’s latest video.

But for all the mountains, beaches and aerial magic, the expected hipthrashing samba moves are absent in Foolish, from the Australian pop band’s new album, Yuck. Not that it really matters because the video has a certain Sergio Mendes cool that calls for a slower version of lascivious.

Alpine’s frontwomen, Phoebe Baker and Lou James, give a fair showing of it, too. They’ve definitely gone jungle.

And in case it’s not obvious, a menagerie of crocodiles, leopards, elephants, flamingos – not to mention uniformed dictators, surface-to-air missiles and palm trees – underscore the point.

Lying back in a ritzy CGI pool somewhere around the Cristo Redemptor mountaintop statue high above Rio is probably a little different to the Barwon Club gig Alpine will play this month but, hey, as James pointed out, it’s all part of an uber-cool national Foolish tour.

Hilton, together with guitarist Sam Cocking and a phalanx of hot dancers, will kick off the Bellarine Peninsula vineyard’s Fireside Fab series of concerts on 27 June.

Hilton’s Kylie show continues to enjoy rave reviews, with every aspect replicated and finessed strikingly, including costumes from live performances, choreography, music and Minogue herself.

Jam-packed with Minogue’s hits from the past three decades, Hilton described the show as a fun outing for all concerned.

“It has all the hits, from the classics to a couple from her newer material,” she said.

WITH awards, such as Family Car of the Year, Medium Car Under $50,000 and Gold Star Value Car, piling up like unpaid bills, it’s time to look at what is winning the Skoda Octavia so many pats on the back.

The model that earned the accolades is the Skoda Octavia Ambition Plus 103TSI 1.4 DSG automatic sedan, which recently came into my possession with a Tech Pack widening the equation.

Since the awards were won, safety of the flagship Skoda has been boosted by the addition of a rearview camera on all Octavia Ambition Plus, Elegance and RS models.

It is also available with the optional Travel Pack on the Octavia Ambition.

Already the range carries an impressive list of safety features including seven airbags in the Octavia Ambition and nine airbags in the Ambition Plus, Elegance and RS. Multi-Collision Brake is standard on all models.

It is available in sedan and wagon format with petrol or diesel power and prices start at under $24,000 for the Ambition 103TSI DSG petrol sedan and top out at $41,440 for the RS 135TDI DSG diesel wagon.

The Tech Pack on our test vehicle included Adaptive Cruise Control, including Front Assist with City Emergency Brake; bixenon headlights with Adaptive Front Light System, including integrated headlight washers; LED daytime running lights; front fog lights with cornering function, rear LED lights, rain sensor, Driving Mode Select; automatic parking assist and acoustic front and rear parking sensors; advanced keyless entry, including smart start and alarm; plus premium German Canton sound system.

Like most mid-size passenger vehicles these days, the third generation Octavia has grown over the previous model and taken on a bolder more dynamic look with the absence of unnecessary decoration.

Front on, accents and details hint at new-found prestige while signature Skoda features, such as the radiator grille, logo and headlights, make no doubt as to the car’s pedigree.

INSIDE: The new Octavia has a roomier interior.

At the rear, Skoda C-shaped lighting strips, in the optional test car Tech Pack, are made from LED light strips, adding further distinction.

Increased exterior dimensions means there is more room inside.

The infotainment system, with all its menu buttons and knobs, is centrally located in the centre console beneath the hazard warning flasher switch.

The white backlit instrument panel has been redesigned.

For the first time, the multifunction display Maxi DOT in the centre of the instrument cluster of the Octavia can be ordered in colour.

A Columbus satellite navigation system display uses a high resolution eight-inch touch screen with proximity sensors that show the options when it senses your hand is close, media-in connection, including Apple video functionality, menu guidance, two SD card slots, Bluetooth phone connectivity, voice control, JPEG viewer and an internal 64 GB flash memory.

The Octavia comes with the choice of three engines - two TSI petrol motors and one TDI common-rail diesel unit. These cut fuel consumption and emissions by up to 20 per cent over their predecessors.

The 1.4 103 kW TSI, in the test car, combined with a DSG seven-speed automatic, achieves maximum torque of 250 Nm between 1500 and 3500 rpm.

The TSI 16-valve four-cylinder engine sets new standards in energy efficiency, lightweight design and pulling power.

Reduced internal friction and

weight, as well as efficient heat management, provide for up to 19 per cent lower fuel consumption and emissions. Passive safety includes airbags all round, while active safety features ABS anti-skid braking with electronic brake-force distribution, anti-slip regulation and multi-collision brake.

Electronic Stability Control includes Hill Hold Control, while automatic flashing brake lights are activated in emergency braking situation.

Port Adelaide is ninth, Geelong is 10th, both at five wins and separated by less than two per cent on the AFL ladder.

Both have met top eight sides six times in the 10 rounds so far, winning two and losing four each.

In fact, the sides share a host of similar statistics going into their Friday night clash at Adelaide Oval.

Even their points for and against are within cooee of each other.

It’s another eight-point game for Geelong, which is often the case for teams just outside the top eight.

Cats coach Chris Scott believes the ladder posi-

tion reflects Geelong’s season so far but not necessarily that of the Power.

He said Port Adelaide was similar to Geelong in playing some pretty good sides at the top end of the ladder, “so I don’t think you can really look to the ladder to get a fair gauge on how they’re playing”.

“The fixture means the ladder is probably a bit distorted. It might not be but I think that’s the case.

“Even by their own admission they would say they haven’t quite hit their peak so far and we’d expect they will at some stage this season.

“We’ve just got to make sure it’s not against us.”

When Port Adelaide has been beaten this season its opponents have used similar strategies based around cutting the Power run.

“When you’re a well-performed side the opposition tends to look at you a little more closely. Port would have been one of the teams last year that a lot of teams had a close look at,” Scott said, including himself in his observation.

“But I think they’re more than just a one-trick pony. They’ve got some weapons and they play really well as a team when they’re going well.

“They don’t have one particular style, they’re more than happy to change things up and adapt to the way the game’s being played.

As always when we play Port, it’s a challenge for the coaching group because we know we’re not going to just roll out one thing and have it play out for 100 per cent of the game.

“We plan for them to play their best footy.”

LOCAL anglers have begun chasing elusive winter snapper, with Tim Nalder braving the elements off North Shore rocks at night last week with fresh squid bait.

Tim noticed some tentative bites, picked up his rod and was taken by surprise when a 6.75kg took off with his bait.

Fishing World Geelong’s Michael Moore fished land-based from North Shore rocks before work, banking pinkies to 40cm on soft plastics.

He said the change of tide worked best.

Queenscliff held large numbers of King George whiting over the past week, some just over 40cm. The grass beds just outside the harbour were a hot spot, with tenderised squid baits working well.

I took a quick run offshore from Barwon Heads on Saturday afternoon, finding numerous schools of Australian salmon. I boated fish to 2.5kg on Sea Iron lures.

Strong northerly winds were ideal for local beach fishing, with Bancoora and Jan Juc again producing salmon to 2kg.

Paul Foot took son Evan down to St Augustine’s Lake at Highton on Monday, hoping for a trout or two. Their Powerbait on a running sinker rig was soon catching rainbow trout, with several banked by the end of the session.

Wurdee Boluc Reservoir fished well earlier last week for anglers walking the rock wall with lures. Redfin and trout to 2kg were taken, especially on Fish Arrow soft plastics.

Lake Purrumbete was practically unfishable last weekend due to the strong winds but brown and rainbow trout to 2kg were boated beforehand, with first-light the peak bite time.

John and Ben Stephenson headed up to Wangaratta to fish the Ovens River for Murray cod.

They caught four to 69cm and a chucky trout cod of 54cm on hard-body lures and spinner baits cast among the snags.

Louis Labouremene travelled to the Thredbo River to make the most of the end of the trout season last week. Fly fishing from the bank, the going was tough until a 4.8kg, 80cm Atlantic salmon took a gold tungsten pheasant tail nymph on Louis’s last cast before entertaining him with a half-hour fight.

Forecast calm weather should spoil local anglers for choice over the next week. Snapper in Corio Bay will be worth a shot, while land-based options include spinning the beaches for salmon.

Freshwater anglers should focus on lakes Purrumbete or Bullen Merri, with both trout and Chinook salmon on the go.

Rangers’ reunion to celebrate six turbulent decades

A move to Myers Reserve in 1975 was expected to revitalise the club but Barr admitted that many supporters thought the hard work was done and had stepped away.

In 1983 Rangers went through its most ambitious period and raised funds to bring top players from Melbourne, winning the league in 1983 and 1984 and playing in the Victorian second division.

But Barr believed that spending heavily to achieve championships was the wrong way to go.

“The success was great but when the money ran out so did the players we brought in.”

These days Rangers is reaping the benefits of a junior policy with a system that takes the young players from an early age right through to the seniors.

“Rangers now have the best junior coaches in Geelong and the players have a career path to follow,” Barr said.

The club has radically improved its facilities at Myers Reserve with two new floodlit training grounds on drought-proof grass.

The club was now inundated with requests to play junior soccer, Barr said.

“We’re packed to capacity. The club now has more than 250 players and aims to expand further.”

Geelong Rangers will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a dinner at Capri receptions on 20 June, with former players from around the country to attend.

THE TURBULENT ups and downs of one of Geelong’s strongest sporting stories will be celebrated as Hamlyn Rangers Soccer Club turns 60 later this month.

Long-time president John Barr was one of eight people who set the foundations for the club in a meeting at North Geelong Fire Station in 1955.

“They were people with a passion for the game and they established a club that has created a soccer dynasty that started out as Geelong Scottish,” Barr said.

“By harassing the council they were given a ground to play on at Calvert St, Hamlyn Heights.

“It was no more than a paddock and trees had to be removed, the pitch levelled and stones dug out.

“They recruited players but it did not matter how good they were, if they didn’t pitch in they could find another club.”

Success followed and the club won the local league four seasons in a row and had more cups than a cafeteria, Barr said.

One of the down times was after the club won the Country Cup without earning the reward of promotion. Corio was promoted even though it finished fifth.

“That tore the heart out of the club for a while and we were forced to knock on doors to bring back disgruntled members,“ Barr recalled.

“It irked members then and still does.”
