Paddle out … in pink

By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA Sound will become a sea of pink when the inaugural Paddle in Pink takes to the waterways on Sunday 30 August.

Noosa Today is the proud exclusive print partner of the Paddle in Pink event that encourages all Noosa residents to put on their pink, grab a watercraft and get paddling to help raise funds for breast cancer.

Breast cancer survivor, National Breast Cancer Foundation Sunshine Coast chair and event organiser Sandra Harding said the event is a great chance for the community to come together and support people who have been diagnosed with the terrible disease.

By JOLENE OGLE THE future is looking bright for the local business community as Noosa’s Chamber of Commerce announces a new plan for the region’s future.

CCIQ Noosa announced the four-part plan on Tuesday night to

a packed room at the South Pacific Resort.

The plan is simple and includes a business plan, a festival, an infrastructure project and the transfer of knowledge; all designed to help boost the local business economy.

Fisher, who also runs the Business Mentoring Noosa program, said the four initiatives were the next step in securing the future of local business.

“When we have a stronger local business community, we have better social cohesion,” she said.

the formal adoption of a business plan at Tuesday’s meeting and will be followed by a feasibility study to determine the need for a Noosa convention centre.

Ms Fisher said CCIQ Noosa’s role was to be the catalyst for the 1000-seat convention centre and they

were willing to conduct a feasibility test to show the need for such a venue in Noosa.

Next in line is the introduction of the Noosa International Film Festival that is expected to take place in November 2016.

FOR the past 80 years, the Tewantin-Noosa RSL Women’s Auxiliary has with dedication served the Noosa community and beyond.

On Friday, a special birthday celebration was held at the RSL to acknowledge this outstanding contribution.

Formed back in 1935, the auxiliary’s first meeting was held at Mr Harry John’s (RSL sub-branch president) shop in Hastings Street, with just 10 women gathering for the occasion.

Some 80 years on and the auxiliary, now with 90 members is going strong.

While the services of the auxiliary were most apparent during the outbreak of World War II, their work today still greatly benefits the wider community.

During the war, the ladies were kept busy knitting scarves, balaclavas, socks and mittens, baking cakes and biscuits, all to fill the Comforts Fund parcels that were sent to the men overseas, at the same time looking after home and family without the benefit of the modern conveniences we take for granted.

In 1942 when the army moved into the area the women helped entertain the troops by serving suppers at the dances held twice weekly.

For over 40 years the auxiliary catered for engagement parties, weddings, reunion dinners and debutante balls and still today there is a core of ladies who turn up at 4am every Anzac morning to serve the early morning cuppas and then the breakfast after the dawn and cemetery services and the barbecue after Remembrance Day. The local auxiliary supports a wide variety of local initiatives and there is a wonderful spirit of friendship within the group.

Last year school donations had increased to $100 per award and there are now 24 recipients.

The auxiliary’s regular donation list has increased and for the past three years the ladies have also taken on the catering for the annual Descendants Day Luncheon.

“Even today we think back to those 10 women who had the initiative and foresight to establish this auxiliary,” Tewantin-Noosa RSL Women’s Auxiliary secretary Kay Huntington said.

“To those who took up the torch and held it tight and to those who keep it held alight - we congratulate and salute you.

“To those who come after us and those who will be celebrating the centenary of this the TewantinNoosa RSL Women’s Auxiliary in the year 2035, we salute you too.”

Pike’s 30-year honour

By JOLENE OGLE POMONA resident Ian Pike was honoured for his 30 years of volunteer firefighting service when he received an Australian Fire Service Medal.

While the award means Mr Pike can now put the initials AFSM after his name and attend a lavish ceremony in Canberra, Ian, 69, said he was simply humbled to have been recognised for his hard work. “(Receiving the medal) doesn’t change anything. It doesn’t make a difference as far as the day-to-day running of things,” he said.

“But it is good to know you have been appreciated for the hard work you put in.”

Ian fell into the volunteer rural fire service 30 years ago when he was a dairy farmer in the Mary Valley.

“In those days we didn’t have any equipment and we all used our tractors. So all the farmers were just basically part of (the rural fire brigade),” he said.

“We had a tank that fitted on the back as

a spray unit. And most of the tractors had a blade on the front. The first truck came here in 1994. But today, you would be lucky enough to get two tractors in the area.”

During his 30 years of voluntary service, Ian has attended more rural and urban fires than he could count, including 24 fires in the last 12 months.

Ian was also part of the team who worked throughout the night to help stop the bushfire behind the sports stadium in Sunrise Beach last year.

“We’ve had some big fires, being called out to Kingaroy and places like that. But you don’t really recall them. You get them done and head home,” he said.

Ian is still active in the service and is busy holding down four roles - fire warden, first officer of the Federal brigade, Noosa group officer and area representative for Caloundra for the Rural Fire Brigade.

Throughout 30 years of service and countless fires, Ian said his greatest achievement hasn’t happened yet, but it’s not far away.

“It’s been an ongoing plan for 20 years but the base earthworks are done.”

The planned station will include a four-bay shed that will house Federal’s three trucks as well as a training room and volunteer amenities.

For Ian, fighting fires and saving lives is all part of the job and it doesn’t look as though he will be slowing down any time soon.

Ian joins Ian Young of Peregian Springs who was awarded an OAM for service to surf lifesaving and the Noosa community as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours today.

Back Nicole in this fight

By JOLENE OGLE PEREGIAN Springs family the Tsesmetzis are facing an unimaginable heartache as mother of one, Nicole, fights to save her own life.

Since being diagnosed with the rare bone cancer chrondrosarcoma in July 2014, Nicole has fought to stay alive, enduring unsuccessful radiation therapy and numerous surgeries to relieve horrendous pain caused by a tumour in her back.

Nicole’s doctor Dr Bruce Whelan said an 8cm tumour that was pushing on the spine and spinal cord was removed from Nicole’s back late last year, but surgeons weren’t able to remove the entire tumour.

“After just four months, in November 2014, the tumour had returned, compressing Nicole’s spinal cord,” Dr Whelan said.

“She required another surgical procedure.”

In December last year, Nicole underwent 10 radiation treatments at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, but sadly the cancer has continued to progress and has now spread to Nicole’s lungs.

The cancer is now being treated by a trial drug called LDE225 which the family is hoping will be successful, but Nicole, 32, will need ongoing treatment that is currently only available overseas and comes with a price tag of $100,000.

In true Noosa style, the local

community is coming together to help support the Tsesmetzis family; Nicole, husband Manos and daughter Polly-Anna.

A Night for Nicole fund-raiser will be held tonight at the Noosa Waterfront Restaurant from 7pm.

Event organiser and Nicole’s aunt, Tammy, said the fund-raising dinner had received great support, with only six seats left.

Tickets are available now and are $85 per person with all proceeds from the night going straight to Nicole and her family to help fund the international cancer treatment.

There is also a major raffle that will be drawn on 20 June at the Pool Cafe in Peregian Springs, from 6.30pm.

Up for grabs are five major prize packs kindly donated by local business owners including a vehicle service up to $400 at Pacific Motor Group, a $100 clothing voucher by Boom Shankar, one week accommodation at 10 Hastings Street for four people, and so much more.

Tickets are only $2 and are available from the A Night for Nicole gala dinner tonight, or Nicole’s family will be going door-to-door in Peregian to sell the tickets.

Nicole’s family have also set up a fund-raising website, www.fightforlifefund.com if you would like to support Nicole in her quest for cancer treatment.

Court told of defendant’s bad call A COOROY man who called an insurance company 14 times in one day has pleaded guilty to harassing and causing offence using a phone.

Oliver Brady Alcorn appeared in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday charged with seven offences including one count of using a carriage service to harass, menace or offend.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Melissa Campbell said the defendant phoned the RACQ 14 times in one day on 8 March this year and, while the nature

of the phone calls wasn’t revealed in court, Sgt Campbell said it would “certainly cause distress”.

Defence lawyer Anna Smith agreed and said “any reasonable person would find it (the content) offensive”.

In sentencing, Magistrate Madsen said pleading guilty guilty to the offence was a sign of remorse and Alcorn deserved “lots of credit” for pleading and saving the RACQ staff the trauma of attending court and reliving the experience.

Ms Smith said the phone calls were out of character for Alcorn, who didn’t offer an excuse or reason for the calls and said he didn’t recall making them.

Alcorn also pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing a dangerous drug, two counts of possessing utensils used for smoking drugs and one count of supplying a dangerous drug.

Alcorn was sentenced to 12 months probation and a 12 month good behaviour bond.

By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA Council has voted to refuse a quad bike tour operator’s request to have a sunset clause removed from their development approval.

Instead, Noosa Council voted to align the sunset clause end date with the lapsing date of the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection permit that allows the company to operate in the Woondum National park.

Both the development approval and the

permit to operate in the park will lapse on 31 March 2018.

The quad bike tour operator made an application to council to remove the sunset clause from the development application that refers to the business headquarters on Tablelands Road, Cooran, earlier this month.

In a report to Council, Council staff recommended the removal of the clause but councillors rejected the recommendation in favour of aligning the two permit lapse dates.

Sandra has created the event with the help of businessman Lachlan Stevens who, motivated by his own personal loss, is determined to help cancer survivors.

Owner of Boardwalk Boats, Lachlan has experienced the devastation of cancer in his own family and has helped organise the Paddle in Pink event as a way of giving back to the community.

The event will be held on Sunday 30 August from 8am and will see participants paddle through the Noosa Sound, on any type of board from a stand-up paddle board to a kayak, as a sea of pink.

Noosa Councillor Sandy Bolton is the proud patron of the event and said it was a great honour to be involved.

“The deep admiration, respect and thanks I have for those that increase awareness, fundraise, and support both men and women affected by breast cancer, and all cancers, is enormous,” she said.

“And to those that tackle this disease with strength, dignity and

selflessness, you are a shining beacon to all.

“We continue to learn what is real, what is important, and what we should strive for every day from you.

“I look forward to being part of the sea of pink, and to joining Noosa in paddling our way closer to a cure.”

All funds raised on the day will be donated directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Ms Fisher said the Film Festival would be a vital addition to the region’s event calendar as it will not only expose Noosa locals and visitors to high-quality local and international films, but it will also present an important networking opportunity.

“We want the film industry to convene in Noosa,” he said.

“This will allow networking and attract national and international heavyweights to the region.”

The fourth initiative is the introduction of business knowledge sharing forums where local business owners can attend to learn how best to carry out aspects of business such as digital marketing.

CCIQ Noosa vice-president Peter Chenoweth said Noosa business mentors would follow-up the forum with a personal visit to business owners to discuss how to apply the new skills and knowledge to their business.

“We are doing all of this to help grow local business,” Mr Chenoweth said.

“Our new goal is to help grow revenue by 10 per cent by 30 June 2017.”

Ms Fisher said CCIQ Noosa was still working on ways to measure the impact of their new initiatives on local business, but a planned multi-chamber conference should help iron out any issues.

“We spoke to CCIQ and asked them for their top three performing cham-

bers in the hope of learning from them and sharing ideas,” Ms Fisher said.

From their discussions with CCIQ, Noosa Chamber has a list of nine Queensland Chambers of Commerce who will be invited to attend a forum on 28 July to share ideas.

Among the discussion topics will be the top three initiatives from each chamber that has been successful, as well as how these chambers measure their performance to ensure they are best serving their members.

Passion for her pupils

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL THE teaching aspirations of Verrierdale resident Kasia Palko have been given a financial boost with a $5000 Future Teacher Scholarship from Teachers Mutual Bank.

Kasia was one of just seven students in Australia to receive the funding after she impressed judges with her passion for teaching.

Currently in her third year of a dual-degree of a bachelor of special education (primary) and a bachelor of disability services through the University of New England, Kasia also

works as a special learning support teacher’s assistant at Noosa Pengari Steiner School.

For the single mother of two teenage children, returning to the classroom has been a challenge and she welcomed the financial assistance with open arms.“This scholarship removes a big financial burden,” Kasia said.

“It has helped tremendously on an everyday basis and has allowed me to focus on my studies and becoming a skilled special education teacher.”

Kasia’s passion has always been in supporting

young adults and children, and tertiary education was a natural progression after a long career in social work and learning support.

As a future special education teacher, she is focused on fostering her students’ self-esteem and helping them develop by building quality and respectful relationships with others.

“For me, teaching is an incredible experience that I look forward to every day - seeing smiling children in class makes me feel like I’m doing something great,” Kasia said.

WHO would have believed it, one day 30,000 people and lavished as the best yet, and today it may all be over.

The Noosa Food and Wine Festival is up there with the best food style festivals in the country, if not the leader.

I have had a long friendship with Jim Berardo and have always admired the passion he exerts for anything he believes and is involved in.

Yeah, yeah, I know he makes a quid out of what he does, but he always puts his hands in his own pockets to ensure a good result.

That attribute isn’t shared with some other Noosa identities who like to make out how much they do in the area.

I notice a few business people have come out in print “we’ll help the event to keep going”.

Now allow me to offer some advice, once the financials are sorted out and creditors are looked after, a well thought out decision must be made.

A plan must be put into action to continue or shelve the event, it’s that simple.

Over the next few weeks, dollar estimates will float around the community and give everyone a clear base to work from.

Administrator John Cunningham will be conducting a creditors meeting today, hopefully any decisions made will start the process of whether or not it's worth the effort of restructuring a new look festival.

Or is it worth the headache of continuing the re-float what could be a sinking ship.

Jim himself confesses that he invested $4

million in the festival and restaurant over the time-frame, and this year’s event cost $2 million to run.

The saddest aspect for Jim was the distinct lack of genuine financial support offered, especially if you compare with other similar high profile events.

Events declared include Margaret River which receives $2.53 million from the WA Government, Melbourne and Adelaide both receiving over $1 million each from their governments.

I notice mayor Noel Playford is offering his support, hopefully he means financial and not just cleaning the Lions Park.

Tourism Noosa chief executive Damien Masingham is another onside with the resurrection: “Tourism Noosa will work with all parties to do everything we can to ensure the festival continues in the future”.

Councillor Frank Wilkie could be the saviour here after his comments re: the tourism changes for July.

Cr Wilkie said the new arrangements for funding through the levy will be more defined in local marketing activities. Frank said: “The new arrangement will depend more upon mutually agreed, clearly defined marketing programs than the automatic, annual transfer of $500,000 dollars to Destinations Limited”.

There you go Frank, how about channelling some of that loot towards the new Food Festival, it certainly covers the local marketing angle.

It’s strange, while its doom and gloom with the food, that’s not the case for other Noosa events after the announcement of state major events funding - the Festival of Surfing, Rally Queensland, Doonan Equestrian Centre, Ocean Swim Series and Sevens Rugby all receiving three-year grants.

Look of the books IT’S EASY to have money in the bank when you don’t maintain your property and you don’t invest in the future. Even the poorest performing businesses can make the books look good to the banks and shareholders when they need to. That’s how the world went into recession - businesses including banks producing books full of smoke and mirrors. The Noosa community needs to look for telltale signals like the pathetic efforts of Noosa Council’s capital works program which has only completed one third of the very achievable program it set for itself. Other smoke signals include the regular closed door meetings of councillors and the lack of open debate in the public eye. Real alarm bells start ringing when the CEO refuses to answer formally put questions on the budget, despite many reminders and after 12 deliberation.

Where there is smoke there is fire and Noosa is looking very hazy.

Sofa, not so good Someone obviously decided that they no longer wanted this sofa, so they dumped it on a Tewantin footpath under cover of darkness last Friday night. It makes you wonder how anyone could think that it is quite OK to do this!

Bruce Hallett, Tewantin. gests that any relocation attempt is likely to make matters worse. Experience of relocations elsewhere suggests that the animals are most likely to return to the original site. Furthermore the majority of relocation attempts also result in more camps being created. Studies show that these new camps are established between 200 metres and 900 metres from the target camp.

If council were to take action that caused more residents to suffer, then we would be remiss in our duty of care to all residents. When we are able to do so under state controls, council will be looking to expand the buffer between the current camp and nearby houses.

This is a far more complex issue than can be explained in a letter to the paper. I am happy to answer any questions on this difficult topic. I accept that the flying foxes at Wallace Park are generating significant nuisance for nearby residents, and I do extend my genuine condolences to them.

As occurred with a similar sized colony that existed for a few years next to Lake Weyba Drive, we also expect the Wallace Park colony to eventually disperse naturally. I only wish we could pinpoint exactly when that might happen.

All at sea FOR nearly two years, ‘Team Australia’, girt by sea, midst droughts and flooding rains, hostile waters, torrid squalls, raging temperatures, howling seas and screaming headwinds, was now

strangely becalmed, ‘like a painted ship upon a painted ocean.’ A dead albatross hung from the yardarm.

Under the tattered sails and three sheets to the wind, the captain stared resolutely at the far horizon while addressing his crew of tired old white men.

He misspoke when he declared that the vessel was on an even keel and that ‘climate change is crap’. Mopping their brows, the motley crew could only gape at this ancient mariner.

NOOSA Council is acutely aware that many residents living near Wallace Park are fed up with the local flying fox colony. We genuinely sympathise with those who have to deal with the noise, odour and droppings these animals generate.

In her most recent letter, Kay Fielden (Noosa Today, 4 June) states that Noosa Council’s senior environment officer Peter Milne and I have both claimed that we have received only one complaint on this issue. Back in January I was asked by another resident how many formal complaints council had received. I immediately checked with staff and answered that, at that time, there had been two complaints. Since then we have received more complaints. Kay knows this, as I have explained it to her. To keep quoting a response that is now four months out of date is misrepresentation.

Kay also asserts in her letter that studies about the impacts of flying fox relocation attempts are not “empirical”. Yet I have offered her a published academic paper on this subject authored by five experts hailing from Griffith University, the NSW Department of Environment and elsewhere. The unfortunate reality is that Noosa Council cannot take action if the expert advice it is receiving sug-

The presentation will cover topics such as: “why mature workers are needed”, “myths and facts about the employment of mature age”,” barriers to employment” and “the positives for both employers and employees”.

Land values keep most people happy THE number of Queensland landowners lodging objections to their land valuations has remained at a low level.

Queensland Valuer-General Neil Bray said less than one-quarter of one per cent of landowners had lodged objections to statutory land valuation notices issued on 4 March 2015.

“A total of 2662 objections have been received this year representing just 0.22 per cent of the 1,236,970 notices issued to landowners in 29 of Queensland’s 62 rateable local government areas,” he said.

“This year’s figure is down from the average per cent of objections received over the last five years which is 0.25 per cent and

FEASTING on the buffet at our friend Mark Keatinge’s tooth filing ceremony (mesangih) this week, I suddenly noticed that of the small handful of bules, or Westerners present at this most Balinese of rituals, I was probably the youngest.

How times have changed. Back in the days before electricity and refrigeration the only old white people you ever saw were the odd earnest Dutch folk in khakis and pith helmets tracing their colonial heritage. Now we’re everywhere, still trying to surf like kids, eking out the pensioner years in backstreet villas, getting nipped and tucked for next to nothing and emerging from Dr Rudi’s dental clinic with smiles whiter than Warney’s.

Which brings me back to Mark’s teeth filing. It’s more than 40 years now since he skippered a dubious and very leaky boat from Onslow, WA, and washed up on Bali’s shore (literally) with first mate Michael White, a young architecture student from Sydney who subsequently changed his name to Made Wijaya and became Bali’s most famous landscape designer, responsible for the exquisite gardens of the Oberoi, Bali Hyatt and Four Seasons Jimbaran hotels.

Mark never felt the need to change his name, but he’s become every bit as Balinese as his old shipmate, a respected elder at his wife’s family’s banjar, presiding over funerals and cremations when not attending to his highly successful business building and flat-packing wooden houses for clients like Sir Richard Branson.

But in 22 years of wedded bliss with the lovely Ketut, he had never had his teeth filed,

Planting this year's second rice crop, Pererenan, Bali. so he took the opportunity to perform the coming of age rites with his two teenage daughters this week. Although its roots derive from Bali’s animist culture, the ceremony has been absorbed into the Hindu Dharma.

These days it is largely symbolic, with a priest making only a few passes with a sterilised file, but it is taken no less seriously or reverently.

The ceremony is symbolic of coming of age, a transition from animal to human represented by the filing of the sharp canines, and the control of the six human evils – desire, greed, anger, intoxication or being under the influence of strong emotion, confusion and jealousy.

While Mark was a bit long in the tooth (no pun intended) to be coming of age, the rules about this are a bit fuzzy, since many Balinese families hold off on the expensive ceremony and party until they can have a group filing.

The dressing of the subjects in traditional adornments begins long before dawn, and the filing is usually done with the rising of the sun. Then family, close friends and neighbours gather within the elaborately-decorated family compound for a celebration that lasts all day, but again, conceding to the pressures of the modern world, most people drop in for only

a couple of hours, to chat, eat and listen to the soothing music of the gender wayang.

Alcohol plays no part in the celebration, but in another thoughtful concession, Mark, resplendent in a red brocade jacket and matching crown, brought a tray full of icy cold Bintang beers over to the weary old expats.

Absolutely nothing happened at Mark Keatinge’s tooth filing celebration, and yet I came away from the compound in the heat of the early afternoon feeling relaxed, happy and totally at peace with the world. I guess I felt a little bit Balinese.

World’s oldest backpackers BY the time you read this we will be backpacking up the Malay Peninsula, travelling on the old colonial rail lines and island-hopping on local ferries. After Singapore, I’ve not made one hotel booking. I have this strange yearning to go off the grid, to travel spontaneously and be constantly surprised. It must be another weird old guy thing, but I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to it.

One thing that is scheduled is a night or two in Johor Bahru with our old Noosa mate and colleague Di Pickering, who with husband John has been working at the new Pinewood film studios.

1kg overripe organic tomatoes, cut into quarters.

2 tins of organic peeled tomatoes.

10 whole cloves of garlic.

1 brown onion, diced.

2 red chilies, finely chopped.

2 celery stalks, chopped.

2 tablespoon ground coriander.

2 tablespoon ground cumin.

2 tablespoon honey.

1) Put tomatoes and garlic on an oven tray, lined with baking paper.

Sprinkle four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast for 30-40 minutes on 160C, or until soft.

2) Combine other ingredients in a large pot with three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil. Saute until onions becomes translucent.

3) Add the roasted tomatoes and two tins of organic peeled tomatoes.

4) Cook for about 30 minutes, add one bunch of chopped fresh coriander and two tablespoons of honey.

5) Cool a little before blending to a smooth consistency. Season with salt and pepper and add one tin of organic lentils.

This delicious soup is best served with Tanglewood organic sourdough available at Belmondos Organic Market.

Debunking myths about nutrients DO YOU you have your food facts straight?

Cancer Council Queensland has put some common food myths under the microscope to help separate fact from fiction.

Myth 1: Are fresh vegies more nutritious than frozen?

Frozen vegies are usually picked in their prime and snap-frozen very soon after harvesting, which means they are chock-a-broccoli full of nutrients, while fruit and vegetables destined to be shipped to fresh-produce aisles, can be degraded of some nutrients due to long travel time.

That said, growing your own vegetables or buying them fresh from your local farmers markets, may offer more health advantages. In contrast, canned vegies tend to lose a lot of nutrients during the preservation process, which is why

it’s important to always read the food label or opt for fresh or frozen vegies as an alternative.

Verdict: They’re easy to prepare and can provide you with a healthy homemade meal, saving you from the temptation of takeaway.

Myth 2: Is chocolate good for you?

Chocolate has been found, in some studies, to reduce blood pressure and the risk of stroke, as well as benefitting cardiovascular health, thanks to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents that protect the inner walls of blood vessels from atherosclerosis. If you crave chocolate, try to go for dark chocolate, with 70 per cent cocoa solids and less sugar, with fat derived from cocoa butter and the added benefits of iron and magnesium. and minerals, but because microwaving heats up food without having to use a lot of water, it helps foods to stay nutrient packed.

Verdict: Microwaves are safe.

Myth 4: Is coffee bad for your health?

Systematic reviews of research judge the current evidence as mostly in favour of drinking coffee. Coffee is linked to a decreased risk of premature death, type two diabetes and some types of cancer, although more research needs to be done. If you’re a latte lover, keep in mind that adding milk and sugar to a few cups a day can significantly increase your calorific load – potentially contributing to weight gain and increased risks of chronic disease.

Verdict: It may be hard to resist, but try to avoid addiction to calorie-laden drinks.

THE first all-ability AFL clinic kicked off last Wednesday night with a dozen special needs players charging the Tigers’ home ground oval keen to learn the art of the game.

The clinic is open to all ages and abilities and anyone who wants to give AFL a go is welcome to come along to the Wednesday night training sessions that will run for another eight weeks.

Clinic organiser Rob Purves said the first clinic was a great success with the newest AFL players jumping at the chance to learn new skills and practice their goal kicking.

Rob said the students will learn basic skills such as handballing, marking, kicking and goal kicking.

“And I want to see goals celebrated with handstands or high-fives all round,” he said.

“It’s important this is an enjoyable experience for everyone. So first we will gauge everyone’s skill level and then we can tailor the sessions to suit that.”

Noosa Tigers players helped facilitate the training session and Rob said they were keen to volunteer to help.

“When we asked the play-

ers if they wanted to help, they jumped on board straight away,” Rob said.

“I’m always trying to get the guys to help with other things, but I mention this clinic and they jump straight on it.”

The next AFL clinic is on Wednesday from 4.30pm at the Weyba Road AFL grounds and is open to people of all ages and abilities. Conor’s man of the match award was earned through relentless defensive pressure.

Noah played his best game this season while Harry ran in a few trademark corner tries.

Sarena and Will were menacing with ball in hand and Zac’s well-timed offloads continue to baffle the opposition. Special thanks to Gusso who put in 60 minutes of rugby on Saturday.

The under-7 Fins game started off with Rory making a great run and passing the ball at the last moment to George White to allow him to go in for our first try against the Grammar Greens. Our second try came from Angus with great support from Phoenix, Stirling and Campbell. With great running and tagging from Charlie he certainly saved the opposition from scoring too many points. To finish off the last seconds in the first half, Rory landed over the try line.

Weather puts the wind up anglers

By JACK MANGROVE WITH the wind over the past week, a lot of anglers in smaller craft decided to give the river a crack rather than venture offshore.

For the larger boats that did make the trip offshore, those annoying winds tested the resolve of a lot anglers.

Some days were better than others with some great results from Sunshine and North reefs.

We saw some sensational cobia, wahoo and mackerel come from North reef with floater pilchards working well.

The bottom bouncers also got some great action with snapper, pearl perch, and tuskfish also hitting the decks.

Soft plastic and micro jigs also worked well on the bottom dwellers. Down on Sunshine Reef, good sized sweetlip and coral trout were the order of the day.

In the river it has been all about the trevally.

It’s cool, but hot to the touch

At the river mouth good quality bream have been temped with strips of fresh mullet around the rocks and along the beach.

There have also been some nice whiting around the dog beach and sand bags area with live bloodworms, yabbies and peeled prawns all doing the job.

Along Gympie Terrace, nice whiting have been keeping kids happy as families enjoyed the long weekend.

On the beaches, North Shore has again been producing some nice fish with a good number of quality flathead taken.

Fish over 60cm are not uncommon.

Winter bream are really starting to come on now along with tailor and dart, pillies on ganged hooks and fresh mullet on a snelled rig having been the favoured baits.

Anglers who look for those gutter on low tide and fish the tide in should be well rewarded.

Rippers to their win over Tewantin with Ruby, Molly and Seisia having mighty games for their teams.

The under-14/16 girls division got underway with NDSHS 10s having a narrow win over GSLC Maroon, with Lilly-belle, Lexi and Imogen showing great skill. NDSHS 9s (Blue) went down fighting against NDSHS 7s.

Charlie, Mahalia and Raene had great games. A tireless defensive effort allowed St Andrew's to take the points over GSLC (Gold) and Sunshine Rebels showed great composure in their win against NDSHS 9s (Green). Pip, Chelsea and Milli showed some passionate play. SBST showed promising teamwork which led to winning result against NDSHS 8s with Abby, Tayla and Grace having stellar games.

Dodgers dug deep in their match against The Magic Touch in the under-14/16 boys division but The Magic Touch boys banded together to get the result. Mitch, Jack and Josh all played strongly. The Illuminatis went down fighting in their game against GSLC but the GSLC boys kept their cool for the win. Hayden L., Max and Taj all produced strong individual efforts. The luck of the draw produced what was the battle for NDSHS supremacy with NDSHS 9s (Green) accounting for NDSHS 7 and 8s (Blue) and NDSHS 9s (Blue) too strong for NDSHS 7 and 8s (Green). Liam, Gareth, Kyle, Tom, Hayden and Heath looked sharp for their teams.

EVEN with the dramatic dip on the temperature gauge, Noosa Touch Football's junior players still managed to display some hot touch footy action last week.

Purple Strikers and Pinklets played out a thriller in the first under-10 game of the afternoon with Pinklets just holding on to take the win. Dakota, Lilliana and Paige had terrific games. Pink Thunder gave it their best all game against GSLC (girls) but GSLC showed off their attacking qualities to take the points this week. Emily, Alexandra and Anna all gave strong performances. Tewantin had a tough challenge up against the GSLC (boys) with the GSLC team proving too strong on the day with Amoy, Harry and Charlie all playing well. In a see-sawing match, Amigos were in front by just a couple of touchdowns against Sunshine at the final whistle. Bowen, Atticus, Brandon and Ben stood tall for their teams.

In the under-12 division, the Banana Splits girls gave the Warriors boys a run for their money with the Warriors just clinching the win. Monique, Jamaica and Cooper all producing first rate efforts. Panthers (girls) ran into some strong competition in their match against Glen’s Guns with the Gun’s putting in a very polished performance.

Friday night saw Noosa White under 10’s take on the Maroochydore Skippy’s in cold conditions. It was a slow start by both teams.

Once Noosa warmed up, however, they started to dominate with some tough work on the ball by Leroy and Arkie and finished off well with goals by Levi and Coops.

Torin displayed his reliable hard running with back up by Jayden Harry and Kyle. The young Tigers stayed on top all game with team work being a main focus.

Special mentions also go to Tiny and Liam for their efforts, and Ben and Zach for their quality contributions at this week’s game.

Sunday saw the Under 15’s take on Kawana at home and in the beautiful conditions they put on a clinic winning 22-11-143 to 3-1-19. This puts them in third position. Lachie Haines continued his good form bagging at least 5 goals.

The Under 15 girls had the long weekend off, while the Under 13 boys went down to a strong Caloundra. In a strong team effort our boys kept them to two goals a quarter - these boys are getting better with each week.

Noosa red Under 13’s had a tight tussle with Maroochydore and went down 2-2-14 to 4-4-28.

Noosa Blue Under 10’s travelled away to Coolum this week for a great game.

Everyone in the team is working well together. Our team shared the ball around and defended well against Coolum Red. The Dominos Pizza Hot Shot award went to Alex this week for his hard and consistent work in the forwards. The boys defence was good and they kept the pressure on the whole game.

Special mention to Rory, Jago and Ben for their efforts in the centres. Great work boys.

The Under 13 Noosa Reds were unable to get past a determined Maroochydore Gold this weekend in a low scoring scrappy match. Possession was very even with neither side dominating but Maroochy making the most of their entries into the forward 50. Great skills were displayed by Ryan, Bluey and Bella, with Ned and Troy leading the way with attack on the ball. The team showed excellent passages of play but unfortunately could not sustain this for the four quarters.

Hard work at training this week will result in redemption against the Maroochydore Green team this coming Sunday.

A windswept game at Maroochydore this weekend with a five goal breeze blowing down the field had Noosa Under 11’s come out blazing with an early lead that continued into the third quarter.

The Maroochydore Greens rallied together with a hard and fast final quarter that brought them to victory. Noosa’s standout players showed terrific tackling efforts from Luke, Kooper and Jesh and big kicks that kept the game moving from Ben, Billy and Cooper.

Noosa Blue Under 8’s battled hard in a very evenly contested match against Coolum Beach Blue’s this week. It was great to see the enthusiasm displayed by all the players. You can really see that the kids are learning more about footy each week. There are more and more handballs, marks and tactics happening with each game that passes. It’s fantastic to see the players really enjoying being a part of a team and improving their skills while having a lot of fun.

New Revolution takes off Friday twilight bowls saw a good number on the green. Our bowlers don’t seem to mind the cooler weather and there was plenty of “bopping around” to the music supplied by Rick.

Winners on the evening were the triples team of Julanne Brown, Glenn Patterson and skip Norm Walmsley (just back from a three-week holiday).

- Green Master POMONA BOWLS A GREAT weekend was enjoyed by all when we hosted a visit from Burnett Bowls Club. And what a great bunch of people they were.

Saturday afternoon game had the points at Pomona 146 v Burnett 136. Unfortunately, the tide turned on the Sunday morning game with Burnett coming up trumps and defeating Pomona by two points. A big thank you to all the Pomona players who helped make this such an excellent weekend. We look forward to a return match in 2016.

Ladies Results: Ladies A Grade final was played on Wednesday between Tina Camp and Veronis O’Connor. With Tina defending her win in 2014,

it was a great game to watch with some excellent shots by both ladies.

Although it was a close encounter, final congratulations to Tina on her great win and her back-to-back double as our A Champion.

Unfortunately, the Thursday men’s game is not enticing players so if you have a spare Thursday please consider to put your name down. This is a great day to practice your shots and hone up your skills particularly with pennants coming up.

Into the hallowed halls RON LANE

“THE time has come now to reflect on the 87th year of patrolling Noosa Heads' beaches and to acknowledge a number of special achievements by some very special members.”

With these words Greg Cowie, president of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club, welcomed members, sponsors and invited guests to the annual dinner and presentation of awards for the 2014/15 season.

Acknowledging the presence of the club's life members, the president made special mention of Lenore Grice who this year received the high honour of being inducted into Australia’s Surf Life Saving Hall of Fame for her outstanding achievements in surf sports.

She becomes the first member to receive such an honour.

Speaking to a capacity crowd, Cowie went on to cover all aspects of what has been a very productive and successful year.

Among his opening remarks was his reference to Noosa’s “stepping in and offering our Peregian neighbour a helping up and preventing the inevitable closure.”

He went on to say “the key objective of providing lifesaving services on Peregian Beach was maintained to the benefit of the Peregian Beach community.”

With regard to the club house gear and equipment, all had been upgraded.

He then acknowledged “immediate past president Brett Leckie and his wife Liz and all the Peregian stalwarts who stayed the course and maintained their patrols”.

In closing his summary of the Peregian assist, Cowie thanked Queensland Surf Lifesaving, Sunshine Coast branch and all local clubs. Among the many highlights

were that Noosa had maintained its beach safety record, implementation of another radio beacon at the wilderness camp on North Shore.

He extended the club’s congratulations to the sub branch of Tewantin /Noosa RSL for a memorable centenary celebration of the country’s Diggers, giving special mention to Paul and Robyn Jenkinson, Donald McKill and all their support team.

Other achievements spoken of was Noosa taking part in and sponsoring the establishment of Noosa Headland and coastal strip as a national surfing reserve.

“This initiative sees our pristine local coastline protected for future generations to come.”

He referred to the continued success of the Seahorse Nippers, the great results of Noosa’s competition teams, and the very pro-

gressive surf awareness courses which have seen some 5000 visitations.

Bronze programs being conducted in six high schools also added to the fact that the club had a very busy season.

All members involved in these different achievements will be personally acknowledged by Cowie in his annual report.

The arrival of very influential people at the club was also noted, the first being His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland.

Also serving in his capacity as patron of Surf Life Saving Queensland the Governor “came to meet with the people of the Seahorse Nipper program and gain firsthand knowledge of the work being done”.

Services to surf ON Sunday afternoon a group of senior members of the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club quickly gathered to celebrate two very special announcements that had just been made public.

The first was the award of the Medal of the Order of Australia to Noosa life member Ian Young for outstanding service to Australian surf lifesaving and the community.

The second was the award of life membership of the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club to Noosa’s Lenore Grice.

Lenore, who holds dual membership of both Noosa and Maroochydore, is also a life member of Noosa.

A double life membership is very rare, but well deserved.

Noosa president Greg Cowie said: “This is indeed a great day for Noosa and the community.

“Congratulations to both.”

The visit by these people gives a good indication as to respect in which the club is now held and the members should be congratulated for their work and dedication.

The work done by the management committee of the senior club and the results achieved by the support group the Surf Club was also recognised.

The great work of Noosa club captain Ian Widdicombe and Peregian Patrol captain of the year Liz Leckie was indeed responsible for maintaining a high standard of beach safety at Noosa and Peregian.

In closing his address, the president said: “I thank you all for the support and encouragement you have shown me personally and certainly look forward to next year’s challenge.’’

This was followed by the presentation of awards.

Possibly the most well received was the naming of Donald McKill as the Club Person of the Year.

His attitude to patrolling and club duties plus his efforts in promoting the Noosa Club within the community have indeed been outstanding.
