Queen of hearts

By TANIA PHILLIPS ALBURY’S favourite basketballing daughter Lauren Jackson heads an impressive list of locals who received awards in this year’s Queen’s Birthday honours list.

Lynne Emblin of Chiltern, Wendy McDougall of Chiltern, Marjorie Nicholas of Howlong and Yvonne Booth of Henty also made the list, each being awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

Ms Jackson was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), one of the most prestigious awards available in the honours list for distinguished service to basketball as an athlete at the national and international level, as a mentor for women in sport, and as a supporter of a range of cultural and social welfare groups.

The award recognises her considerable contributions to the Albury region, Australia and internationally, both on and off the basketball court.

On the court her exploits are well-known, having made more than 60 international appearances for Australia since becoming the youngest player ever selected for the Opals in 1997.

She has captained the Australian team since 2006 and been Australian International player of the year (the Maher Medal) on six occasions between 1999 and 2008. In 2005 she was inducted in to the “Best of the Best� at the Australian Insitute of Sport.

Ms Jackson has been MVP for the Australian Women’s National Basketball League four times and was named all-time leading scorer in Olympic Women’s Basketball competition in 2012.

Internationally she has played in a number of countries including the WNBA in America, China, Spain, Russia and South Korea as well as playing for Australia in both the Olympics and Commonwealth games

since the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

She is currently patron and sponsor of the Commercial Club Bandits Basketball Club here at Albury Wodonga, is patron of the Aussie Hoops basketball program (promoting sport for 5-10 year olds) and runs the Lauren Jackson 15 Elites Basketball Training and Camps.

Her record off the court is just as remarkable.

She is currently patron of the Rape and Domestic Violence Service Australia, as well as being the current ambassador for the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre Trust, Gender Equality Champion for UN Women Australia since 2012 and a member of the Women’s League for Peace and Freedom, Women’s Electoral Lobby and National Organisation for Women.

Lynne Emblin was honoured for service to youth through the Guiding movement, and to the community.

She has been State Commissioner for Girl Guides Victoria 2014 after serving as assistant state commissioner in 2012-’13.

Mrs Emblin has served in a large number of roles in the Guides at both a local and regional level since the mid ’80s.

Wendy McDougall was honoured for service to the community of Chiltern.

A founder of the Chiltern Lions Amateur, founding member, of Chiltern Lions Chase and associate, of the Chiltern Lions Club, since 2005 she has also been a voluntary member of the Chiltern Emergency Response Team. She has been an active member of the Corowa Theatre Group from 1982 to 1995 and a member of the Broadford Amateur Theatre Group, 1980-1982.

Marjorie Nicholas received her award for service to the not-for-profit sector, and to the community of Howlong.

River threads through Research finds THE Murray River divides two states and two towns but in its own way it acts as a counterpoise - this idea has inspired the LibraryMuseum Murray River exhibition in Albury.

Last week, the LibraryMuseum held the opening for the exhibition which showcases personal interpretations of the river from four artists around the region - writer Kate Rotherham, Indigenous sculptor Darren Wighton, sound artist Joshua Salisbury-Carter and visual artist Vicki Luke.

Albury Regional Art Gallery’s visual art co-ordinator Bianca Acimovic said given that Albury and Wodonga were towns surrounding the Murray River it was a great theme.

“The river is an equaliser - once you get into the river and join that journey, it doesn’t matter

where you’re from,” Ms Acimovic said.

Local sound artist Joshua Salisbury-Carter said he wanted to make his interpretation of the Murray come alive through sound and interaction.

“One of my pieces involve sensors, so when you walk through it, the art moves and you feel as though you are moving through the overhanging willows down at Noreuil Park,” Mr Salisbury-Carter said.

Mr Salisbury-Carter said he used to spend a lot of time at Noreuil Park floating down the river while growing up.

“As a kid, I’d spend my summers down at Noreuil - and it still evokes a childish excitement within me.”

Three works from the exhibition have been selected to be in the initial collection on the night of the MAMA gallery opening.

HOW does the Dartmouth dam affect aquatic invertebrates genetically?

This is a question that sparked LaTrobe University honours student James Anderson’s initiative to investigate the macroinvertebrate using his own state-of-the-art method.

Last week, Mr Anderson was awarded the Terry J. Hillman Honours Educational Prize for the contribution his project has made towards the research of the Murray-Darling Freshwater Research Centre (MDFRC).

The prize is awarded in honour of the former MDFRC director, whose own contributions were of large benefit to the the ecology in the Albury-Wodonga region. Community and education officer Kathie Le Busque said Professor Hillman started the prize to support honours students.

“He recognised that for students to go through this degree and then take on the extra honours year - financially it can be quite hard on them,” Ms Le Busque said.

“It’s also to encourage the students to continue their research.”

James is passionate about the environment.

Macroinvertebrate biologist Dr Michael Shackleton said Mr Anderson’s work was important because scientists currently don’t know whether structures like a dam impede water bug movement.

Using his own method, Mr Anderson has already extracted DNA of over three hundred aquatic invertebrates and will soon analyse it.

“I guess you could say there’s a knowledge gap and I’ve became curious about it,” Mr Anderson said.

The prize of $3000 has certainly helped Mr Anderson so far.

“I’ve already bought a much-needed laptop,” Mr Anderson said.

“I’m halfway through my honours and have only five months to go - I’m thinking about saving the rest and going on a holiday.”

It’s the initiative from students like Mr Anderson whose passion for the environment and enthusiasm to learn more drives research that can help scientists and biologists to better understand the environment and ecosystem.

Hotel in the spotlight

By TANIA PHILLIPS AN Albury Hotel has received major recognition in a wellknown national magazine.

The Atura Hotel made the finals list for the Gourmet Travellers Hotel of the Year awards announced in Sydney late last month and has made the magazine’s Australian Hotel Guide.

The hotel featured in the Best Budget Hotel section.

“We’re absolutely delighted at the recognition this announcement brings not only for Atura Albury and for the Atura Hotel’s brand, but also for tourism in the Albury-Wodonga region,” Atura Albury General Manager Jodi Brown said.

The Langham Sydney was the big winner at the Gourmet Traveller Australian Hotel Awards announced in Sydney last night, picking up three gongs: New Hotel of the Year, the coveted Best Club Sandwich nod, and the big one, Hotel of the Year.

The newly renamed and refurbished Atura Hotel is receiving national recognition.

Features like this have brought an Albury hotel to the attention of a national magazine.

The awards, the only national hotel awards, coincide with the release of the 2015 Gourmet Traveller Australian Hotel Guide, published with the June edition now on sale.

The 124-page handbook, compiled by reviewers from Australia’s most authoritative travel magazine, is a go-to guide to the country’s top 50 hotels and memorable Australian getaways.

Ms Brown said the hotel’s inclusion was a great plus for the hotel, which became Atura Albury earlier this year.

“It was officially launched as Atura Albury this year and representatives from Australian Gourmet Traveller were among the guests at our official launch function so they were among the first to experience our great hotel,” she said.

“The extensive renovation

works concluded in late April, heralding the start of an exciting new era for the iconic hotel property first opened by Gough Whitlam in 1973.

Yvonne Booth’s nod has come for service to the community of Henty.

Mrs Booth’s work has included being chairperson of the Henty Community Development Committee, since 2014, Commissioner of the William Farrer Division and Riverina Region of Girl Guides NSW from 2000-’13 as well as Region International Officer, 1994-’00; State Appointed Trainer, 1985’00; Henty Unit Leader, 1980’00; Member, 1980-’13 and the

Wattle Award, 1998.

She is an active member of the Henty Uniting Church; a Member of the Women’s Fellowship Group and Mission Convenor for many years; organiser of the Christmas Fair and active member of community day care.

She was a founder and member of the Peter Mac Craft Group, since 1998 and has been Henty co-ordinator of Wrap with Love, since 2003 and founder and founder and co-ordinator, Henty Tidy Town Committee, since 2005.

This is not Mrs Booth’s first major honour - she was named regional Woman of the Year, Albury Electorate, NSW Women of the Year Awards, 2013.

Legacy collects on poker

By MONIQUE KUZEFF THROUGH hail, rain or shine the Poker Run prevails to commemorate our lost soldiers and those who provided their services throughout World War II by raising funds in support of Legacy.

Albury’s Party Unlimited motorcycle club has been committed to hosting the annual Poker Run for a stretch of 19 years and with a target figure that was set to expire this year, the club was de-

termined to reach it.

This year marked the final year for the event to nail its goal which went well in conjunction with the 100th Gallipoli centenary celebrations of the Anzacs.

Although the Poker Run’s participation numbers were down this year due to cold and rainy weather, Party Unlimited club secretary Craig Hastings said their goal was to raise $100,000 across the 19 years and the final figure revealed more than that, thanks to local support.

“A lot of local sponsors picked up and really got on board,” Mr Hastings said.

“We achieved a total of $100,417 raised through this event.”

The poker run collects funds through various ways including the entry fee, merchandise and sponsorship - with all the money going towards legacy.

Mr Hastings said that this year was special because of the 100th centenary celebrations which produced a fantastic

hype and feeling throughout the community and sponsors really stepped up.

“The local parade was great and had a huge turnout.

“Every year the poker run has the same format but obviously this year a lot of our on-going sponsors dug a little deeper to try and reach the goal.”

Without the input and support of sponsors and the local community over the years the goal would not have been achievable, Mr Hastings said.

Hot wheels for fast racing in season launch

By CRAIG MCMILLAN ALBURY Wodonga Cycling kicked off the club race road season last weekend with a good field assembling to take on the 50km course out from Wodonga towards Barnawartha.

A calm and sunny Saturday afternoon handicap race had the riders spread across three groups, with a strong scratch group including in form Declan Gregory and Tim Guy, with a large front group containing a mix of seasoned and first time riders, with three riders forming a smaller group in the middle.

In a case of catch or be caught, the group of three consisting of Terry Halpin, Damien Sims and Nathan Tooley took the offensive approach to grab the initiative, sharing the hard work to hold the quality scratch group at bay and with 10km remaining connect to the front of the race.

With scratch bearing down the now larger front group the mid markers took it in turns to drive the pace to ensure one of their mark contested for the win.

In a fast sprint for the line it was Albury’s Damien Sims, who took a

convincing win from Jindera’s Brad Pietsch and Alburys Nathan Tooley.

The scratch group was led in by

young Bended Elbow Team rider Charly McMillan taking Fastest Time honours, with strong riders Tim Guy of

the NRS professional team Search to Retain, and Bended Elbow Elite captain Declan Gregory driving the group throughout the race.

The race provided a number of riders an excellent hard work out at race intensity, with many setting goals for the John Woodman Memorial Wagga to Albury in July and Amy’s Grand Fondo in mid-September.

Both rides are well over 100km in distance with challenging terrain and large fields.

Riders are deep into preparation for both events, often riding early mornings and sharing indoor training sessions to beat the cold, as well as getting together for longer rides over the weekend.

Race winner Damien Sims is targeting an improvement on his previous times in the Amys Gran Fondo, which has thousands of cyclists enjoying the Great Ocean Road over a 110km course on closed roads.

With personal satisfaction and most importantly summer bragging rights up for grabs, this should ensure this season’s local racing is hard fought.

Custom-built chance for survival

By MONIQUE KUZEFF ENDANGERED species are on the rise – not only in the wilderness of Africa but also in our own backyards on the Border.

Squirrel gliders have been marked on the NSW list of endangered species and this is why groups like Albury Conservation Company and Woolshed Thurgoona Landcare Group have gotten on board with protecting and providing an alternative home for the gliding possum.

The urban nest box project has been implemented by Albury Conservation Company and made possible with the help and support of groups including Thurgoona Men’s Shed, who developed the state-of-the-art nest box that is being put up in backyards of residential and small rural properties.

Albury Conservation Company project co-ordinator Sam Niedra encouraged local residents who live in Thurgoona or Splitters Creek to put their hands up for a nest box to be installed on their property by Parklands Albury Wodonga with no cost involved.

“Sixty nest boxes have already been installed, and we have 40 left.

“This project runs until the end of June, so we urge people to get on board and help provide squirrel gliders with an alternative home.”

Mr Niedra said the rapid development in Thurgoona was having a major impact on the survival of squirrel gliders in the area.

“Squirrel gliders burrow in the hollows of trees and it takes many years for hollows to form inside them - this is why nest boxes are proving to be important for the survival of the squirrel gliders at this stage,” Mr Niedra said.

David Petrovic, president of the Thurgoona Woolshed Landcare Group, said there were also other ways the community could help.

“Animals including cats, dogs, and foxes are also threats to squirrel gliders,” Mr Petrovic said.

“Its important to take care in things like putting your cat inside at night and keeping your dog on a leash when you take it for walks.”

Mr Niedra and Mr Petrovic urged locals whose residential or rural property is in Thurgoona or Splitters Creek to help conserve local squirrel gliders by installing a nest box.

“We exist,” Glenn Rose of the group said.

Not only do they exist - and have for the past six or seven years - but they hold regular meetings once a month on the second Tuesday, from 7pm, at the Albury Commercial Club.

They also hold information evenings aimed at informing the public, members old and new and men and their families who have been diagnosed or have gone through the experience of having prostate cancer.

The next public information night will be held on 23 June, at the Commercial Club.

“This information meeting will focus on what happens after diagnosis,” Glenn said.

“The side effects and solutions after you’ve been diagnosed and had some treatment.”

Guest speakers will include former Prostate Foundation of Australia CEO David Sandoe who will talk openly and honestly about his own personal experiences and local urological surgeon Jonathon Lewin.

“We are hoping to have other health care professionals as either guest speakers or to be involved in the Q&A,” Glenn said.

The support group has two main aims - to support those touched by prostate disease and to raise awareness of the need for men to take control of their own health - and provide advice on services that are available in the region.

However he said because men didn’t always feel comfortable talking about their health, their monthly meetings are kept pretty informal.

“Very often all we do at the meetings is talk,” he said.

He said members talked about their experiences and feelings and what they were going through and quite often there was someone who has had similar experiences and could give advice and support and friendship - and not just for the man but his partner too.

The group provides a safe and confidential environment for people going through the experience.

“In addition we raise awareness on prostate cancer in our community,” Glenn said.

“We welcome new members including partners as well.”

IF you have ever wanted to take a behind the scenes tour of Ken Raff’s shed, watch pots being thrown on a wheel by Kerrie Docker of Table Top Pots or participate in a workshop creating hand-made artworks right in the heart of an artists’ home studio then now is the time.

From Table Top to Beechworth, Corryong to Chiltern, the Murray Art’s Circuit is a rare opportunity to experience the warm atmosphere of a home studio, to buy directly from the maker themselves and discover first-hand the stories that inspire some of our region’s best artists.

According to Murray Arts general manager Karen Gardner it’s a chance to watch demonstrations, listen to artist talks, get creative in workshops and visit exhibitions.

Circuit will feature nine individual artist studios and 10 gallery spaces and artist collectives.

“You don’t often get the chance to step inside an artist’s working studio - to see their tools of the trade and hear directly the process that goes into creating an artwork,” Karen said.

“This is your chance to get up close with some of our region’s most talented artists”.

Say goodbye as Aloha falls flat Aloha Written and directed by Cameron Crowe Starring: Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, John Krasinski, Bill Murray, Alec Baldwin Time:105 mins Rated: PG CAMERON Crowe’s Aloha is not what you’d expect it to be.

It is a nice little movie with an almost fairytale feel. If you’re a fan of the cult hit Local Hero then this might feel familiar though not totally.

The problem with this (and in my opinion all of Crowe’s other movies including to a lesser degree Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous) is it tries too hard. The result is a bit of a dog’s breakfast to be honest - a charming, shambolic, homage to fromage - cheesy but warm hearted, slightly mystical but not quite enough.

In fact, there is not enough of anything to really make it work, which is a shame because in there somewhere is a really charming little movie trying to get out.

Bradley Cooper stars as a

former air force/NASA pilot/ scientist who is now a gun for hire working for a big international company run by Carson Welch (played deliciously by Bill Murray).

He let his employer down in the Middle East and almost got himself killed. Now, with a busted leg and not much of a life left, he’s being redeemed and sent back to Hawaii the scene of his biggest triumphs and the ghosts of his past (including ex-girlfriend Tracy Rachel McAdams who is now married to his friend Woody (John Krasinski) and has two kids). Add in his gung-ho young air force liaison Captain Ng (Emma Stone) and a cast of colourful characters and you have the makings of a cute warm little (slightly syrupy) movie. There are some genuinely sweet and funny moments - the interaction between Cooper and Krasinski is brilliantly funny (particularly when sub-titled), while Cooper and McAdams also seem to have nice chemistry and Alec Baldwin’s gung-ho military man and Bill Murray as the eccentric billionaire are

a lot of fun.

But it’s hard to buy Emma Stone as Captain Allison Ng the young military pilot who is quarter Chinese and a quarter Hawaiian and, very obviously, half Scandinavian.

There has been a lot of criticism that Crowe has “white-washed” the movie by using an obviously Caucasian actress for the role of Ng. But the fact that she does have a peaches and cream actually makes the jokes about her telling everyone she’s Hawaiian funnier. Perhaps she should have been an eighth Hawaiian though. The failing here though is that character makes a head-spinning flip from gung-ho and frankly annoying military girl to smitten school girl. And the character is never quite as likeable or believable as Crowe wants her to be which is a shame because Stone has proven she’s a more than capable actress.

And things tie up just that little bit too conveniently.

But despite all this, Aloha is still fun and warm and worth a look.

Location key to property values EVERYONE who owns property has one burning question: will my house increase in value this year?

Of course no-one, not even the most experienced real estate agent, can answer that question categorically.

But there are a number of factors which enable us to predict which areas are more likely than others to show an increase in median prices.

Location, one of the most crucial factors in a property purchase, is the most obvious.

This ranges from the street the property is in and its location in that street - for example, is it at the quiet leafy end or near a noisy main road?

- to the location of the suburb itself.

Factors such as its transport links, infrastructure such as schools and shopping will play a part.

Changes in these can have a bearing on property prices and whether homes in an area increase in value.

For example the extension of a railway line or other improvements in public transport, zoning changes, the building of a new school or improvements to a shopping centre can all make a property more desirable to potential buyers.

The state of the property market also has a bearing. Increasing house prices and affordability issues have been good news for some middle and outer suburbs and for regional centres within commuting distance of Melbourne.

As the price of property in suburbs close to town has risen, buyers have looked further out and the prices in those adjoining suburbs have risen.

In towns such as Castlemaine and Kyneton, prices have increased as families, priced out of Melbourne, have bought into the area.

And generally the properties which have increased the most are those close to the station, although other factors such as character features and the quality of the home also have a bearing.

Competition has an impact on property prices.

At a time when interest rates are low - and of course at present they are at an historic low - there’s often more competition for homes, and buyers will often bid at higher levels for properties.

While market factors are beyond the control of vendors, owners can improve their property before sale.

Sometimes relatively inexpensive improvements can make a big difference, but it is important to obtain advice before spending time and money.

Overcapitalising a property by spending more than can be recouped at sale, or pricing it beyond what people are willing to pay in that area means it is wasted.

But it is important to emphasise that buying property is a long-term investment.

While some people are lucky enough to buy and sell in a relatively short period and make money, REIV data shows that there are excellent capital gains to be made for those willing to hold a house in the longer term.

For example, in 2008 the median price of a three-bedroom home in inner Melbourne was $740,000. By December last year it was $990,000.

In outer Melbourne the median of $320,000 was $432,000 by December last year. And in regional Victoria the increase was from $240,000 for a three-bedroom home to $302,500.

By TANIA PHILLIPS WANGARATTA proved too strong for Wodonga, running out 35-point victors in their Ovens and Murray round-eight clash at John Flower Oval at the weekend.

A seven-goal first quarter set up the victory for the visitors whose consistent performance saw them finish with the points, 16.7 (103) to 9.14 (68).

Wangaratta came out fired up kicking 7.1 to 1.3 and were never headed, despite a quiet second quarter which saw Wodonga kick back to with four goals - but they were never really in the match.

Zach Leitch was best-on-ground for Wangaratta while Robert Hicks took his tally for the year to 16 with a five-goal haul while Joel Harris has now kicked 14 for the season, adding another four.

The prolific Daniel Bradshaw kicked four and now has 22 for the year while McKye Turner was best-onground in the beaten side.

In other results, Albury continued on their winning way with a solid 24-point victory over Yarrawonga 16.08 (104) to 12.08 (80), Wodonga Raiders 17.9 (111) were too strong for Corowa-Rutherglen 9.6 (60), North Albury beat Myrtleford 12.13 (85) to 10.9 (69) while Lavington went on a goal-spree against Wangaratta Rovers 17.6 (108) to 6.4 (40).
