By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS KAREN Alexander of Emerald has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition of her work in environmental conservation.

Ms Alexander has been working in the environmental sector for 40 years across various groups and organisations.

She grew up in Belgrave, where as her backyard she enjoyed five acres of bushland connected to Sherbrooke forest.

Even as early as eight years old, Ms Alexander developed a love and passion for the bush and environmental conservation. “I’m lucky and I had parents who cared about the environment and were respectful of it,� she said. “Ever since I can remember my parents would take me into the forest, especially when the lyrebirds were singing and dancing.�

Ms Alexander first studied maths at university but later transferred into a natural resource management degree.

Having undertaken her studies in Tasmania, she saw the flooding of Lake Pedder and said she was deeply distressed by it. “When they came to flood the Franklin River I was angry enough to help stop the dam,� she said. “It was then I began work with what was then a new organisation called The Wilderness Society.�

It was with the newly-formed Wilderness Society that Ms Alexander started working in the community sector.

Since then she has worked in many roles across different environmental groups and organisations all over the country.

She continues to hold vice-presidency of Farm Tree and Landcare Association as well as being a campaign supporter of The Wilderness Society, Australian Conservation Foundation and several others.

She has also worked with Parks Victoria, in Tasmania with a tin mining outfit, was president of Bush Heritage Australia, Deputy Campaign Director of

the Australian Conservation Foundation, runs the community fireguard group in Emerald, help set up the Cardinia Environment Coalition, and many more.

Ms Alexander’s passion for environmental preservation led to her being involved in Bush Heritage’s first buy of a large block of land for preservation on Carnarvon Station in Queensland.

She also cares for the environment closer to home as well, planting native vegetation and letting natural regrowth occur on her 24-acre property in Emerald.

Ms Alexander has been living in in Emerald since 1997 after moving from the city and won Emerald Citizen of the year in 2014 her for local Landcare work. “I love the city but I need the bush,� she said. “I need to be able to see it and look at it.�

She said that receiving this award was an absolute honour, but she was so shocked she “had to have a sit down.�

Ms Alexander was especially honoured by the recognition as she says most of her work took place out of the public eye. “I think of the people who have worked with me on a whole range of issues, often for nothing,� she said. “It’s a really nice honour for the people who work behind the scenes more.“ Despite running for public office as a member of The Greens, Ms Alexander sais she wasn’t so good at the public image side of things. “I’m much better at seeing the solutions to things, getting people involved in it, creating a project, running with it for a while, and doing the lobbying involved with getting that solution implemented.�

Her advice is that anyone looking to protect or preserve the natural landscape shouldn’t be afraid to approach their local MP or even a minister. “There are a lot of people in government to talk to and they are there to represent your views,� she said.

With a greener tinge

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THIS year marked the 33rd World Environment Day and the South Dandenong Landcare Group (SDLG) organised events to raise environmental awareness.

Two hundred new plants were cultivated over the weekend at Colby Driver Reserve in Belgrave and at Minak Reserve in Selby.

The SDLG has been working to restore the swamp lands at Mink Reserve that work as a natural filtration system for the residential runoff that flows into Monbulk Creek.

SDLG president Vicki Boyle said the small tributary of the Monbulk creek at Minak Reserve was of great importance to the rest of Monbulk Creek.

“It’s the first tributary that comes into Monbulk creek and enters the national park,” she said.

“There are six tiny little creeks that from springs up on the hill and they join together.

“It was very neglected.

“It’s very beautiful and has lots

of valuable vegetation.”

Where there was once only open space, the SDLG has re-established plant life and ponds to support habitat for native animal species.

These include the platypus, the powerful owl, and the greater glider possum; as well as improving the water quality that flows downstream.

Darcy Duggan, a local naturalist botanist, and vice-president of the SDLG, thinks this kind of natural draining and filtration system is a better alternative to the way water drainage is constructed currently.

He said the SDLG wanted to lead by example with these works.

“We want to be an example for the Yarra Ranges Council,” he said.

“Council doesn’t have the best environmental outcomes, and we’re pushing for a softer engineering approach.”

Ten people attended the event at Colby Drive Reserve and another 10 participated in the planting at Minak Reserve, including Yarra Ranges councillor, Mike Clarke.

Briefly 45 counts of theft, and deception charges A 59-YEAR-OLD Healesville man will front court in October charged with 45 counts of theft and deception related to a Yarra Valley business.

Senior Detective Paul Edyvane from Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) said the charges related to incidents that happened between February 2014 and March 2015.

The man has been summonsed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 12 October 2015.

POLICE are searching for thieves who took off with power tools last week, after forcing open a door at a Beresford Road business in Lilydale.

Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that at 2.50am on Wednesday 3 June, unknown people forced a door open at the business.

He said the door might have been forced by attaching a cable to a vehicle and the door and then driving away.

The thieves stole power tools from the business, and Det Sgt Smithwick said police had yet to estimate the total cost of the stolen items.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Horse rugs theft spree HORSE-LOVING thieves are being sought by police, after horse rugs were stolen from properties in the Yarra Ranges and surrounds.

Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that properties in Wonga Park, Kilsyth and Bayswater had reported thefts of horse rugs overnight on 2 June.

Anyone who may have also had rugs or horse equipment stolen, or who has information on the other thefts, is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report at crimestoppersvic.com.au.

A WOMAN will face court later in the year after being charged for burglary and theft from a Kilsyth property earlier in the year.

Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said the 35-year-old woman, from no fixed place of abode, was charged for a burglary and theft that occurred at an unoccupied house on Pleasant Street, Kilsyth, on 17 January.

The woman has been bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 8 October.

Stairs mark out a properous path

By PETER DOUGLAS THE newly formed Friends of Thompson Road Reserve group has started off well after the recent installation of stairs and a path.

The group’s sole ambition is to improve the reserve at Upwey, through working bees and increased infrastructure.

Thanks to Yarra Ranges Shire, the stairs mark the beginning of big things to come, according to the group.

Group convenor Heather Liney said the project was exciting for many reasons.

“Not only does it create a pedestrian link from the railway and shops, but the group is planning to extend the path,” she said.

“The extension will go through to the creek and beyond to Burrinja Cultural Centre and along to Glenfern Bushlands Reserves.”

Ms Liney said this opened up inaccessible land right in the middle of Upwey.

“This is a wonderful community asset that will encourage walking and shorten trips to the shops,” she said.

“It will enable walkers to enjoy the creek and the nature reserve next to it.”

Meanwhile, the formation of the group gives residents an opportunity to join working bees and contribute to an enhanced experience of the creek and vacant council land.

The group is considering the possibility of a park being established at some stage.

Ms Liney praised the council for their efforts in supporting the group.

“Council has been very encouraging of grassroots projects in Upwey and this is an acknowledgement to them for organising a nofuss improvement,” she said.

“This has made what was a treacherous shortcut now safe and scenic.”

TWO CRANBOURNE residents have been arrested and charged after a search warrant found over $100,000 in power tools stolen from around the Mooroolbark area.

A 25-year-old Cranbourne woman and a 34-year-old Cranbourne man were arrested on 29 May, after police executed a search warrant three days prior, in relation to a number of power tool thefts.

Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said that over $100,000 worth of stolen property had been located, which had been stolen from building sites, as well as masses of copper wire.

The thefts relate to burglaries in the Mooroolbark area, and the pair were charged with burglary and theft, and bailed to front the Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 6 October.

A POLICE operation involving an Airwing helicopter tracked down a car stolen from Lilydale - and the thief that took it - to a Badger Creek property last week.

Healesville police Leading Senior Constable Cliff Argus told the Mail that the car was stolen from Plumbtech in Lilydale on Wednesday 3 June.

The car, however, was fitted with a GPS tracking device, and police were able to track the location of the car with a staff member at the business who relayed information from the tracking system.

“We followed the location given by a staff member, and eventually the vehicle was said to be in the Badger Creek area,” Leading Sen Const Argus said.

Police Airwing found the car in Wallaby Way in Badger Creek, as well as a suspect walking along Koala Avenue - he was then arrested in the rear of a private address in Bluegum Drive at 4.20pm.

The 22-year-old Hallam man was charged with theft of a car and remanded in custody to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court.

Graffiti lessons get drilled in

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS A PILOT graffiti education program about the negative impacts of graffiti and tagging has been delivered to local students.

The project was funded through the Victorian Government’s Community Crime Prevention Program and was delivered through Cardinia Council’s Community Risk and Emergency Management team.

The project is aimed at youths who are likely to be experimenting with graffiti.

Students from Year 5 to Year 9 at Cockatoo Primary School, Beaconhills College (Pakenham campus), Pakenham Secondary College, Kooweerup Secondary College and Emerald Secondary College took part.

Councillor Jodie Owen said the pilot program showcased issues young people didn’t often think of when tagging.

“The program raises possibilities many young people may not have considered in relation to engaging in graffiti,’ she said.

“The students learnt how police use photographs of tags to gather evidence against a tagger.

“Or that taggers could be forced to pay the clean-up bill, even years later.“ Situations depicted by the presenter included a tagger being charged by police and a young person giving in to peer pressure to engage in vandalism.

THE Silvan Water Treatment Plant recently played host to a joint emergency response exercise, designed to test incident procedures at the plant.

Local CFA, police and other emergency services were involved, which gave personnel the chance to practise their training, through responding to a simulated incident.

EMERALD Secondary College has received a $1.5 million from the State Government to upgrade and modernise their integration classroom space.

The collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s integration program caters for about 75 students who have a learning or physical disability, as well as the required 15 teaching support staff.

Parents, school council and previous principal Wayne Burgess have been lobbying hard for a building upgrade.

The funding grant will give these students and staff a refurbished and modernised classroom space to better conduct specialised learning programs.

The program is being conducted from a single old portable classroom that is no longer meeting the needs of the staff and students.

The new learning space will give more space for the teaching support staff to conduct one-on-one breakout sessions with students, as well as specialised facilities for students who need them.

Acting principal Mike Jaremczuk said the funding would go a long way to helping students be more a part of the school community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some of the students have a disability where they need specialised facilities, like having their lockers arranged in a specialised way,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We want to make these kids feel welcome and part of our school community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They have as much a right as any other student to attend school.â&#x20AC;?

The college also runs a brain auditory training (BAT) program as part of the integration program, which supports students who may have brain development issues.

New plan for roadside memorials

By JESSE GRAHAM ROADSIDE memorial policies could be changed to ban photographs of road trauma victims under a review by VicRoads, and residents are being invited to have their say.

VicRoads announced earlier this year that it was reviewing its roadside memorial policy, which has been in place for the last 15 years.

Using an online ‘consultation hub’, VicRoads opened forums with prompts and questions about what people would like to see change - or stay the same - in policies about roadside memorials.

In a recently released paper, VicRoads outlined the result of the first round of consultation and the proposed changes to the memorial policies.

Under the suggested new policy, photos will not be permitted on memorials, “as they may be distressing to the broader community”.

Offensive symbols and language, weapons and objects which may offend, such as beer cans, would not be allowed on memorials, and memorials will have to be located at least three metres from the edge of any road seal.

Memorials will also not be allowed on traffic islands, attached to road infrastructure, such as light-posts or barriers, on roundabouts and should not include reflective materials, lighting, and should not pose a threat if crashed into.

Flowers, under the suggested policy, would be allowed as a temporary memorial, as long as they are not wrapped in plastic or materials that may cause litter or harm to wildlife.

Meanwhile, crosses will be allowed, if they are constructed from timber, neutral in colour and not be longer than 850mm long - 600mm out of the ground - or wider than 400mm.

Plaques will be acceptable, but must not be attached to road infrastructure or utility poles, and should not be larger than 200mm by 200mm.

The paper also lists a ‘transitional timeframe principle’, where memorials may be established with limited restrictions in the short-term, but will be made ‘discreet’ over time, and after 13 months may be relocated or removed.

The measures were formulated by a working group, which included representative of some councils, Road Trauma

Support Services Victoria, Road Trauma Families Victoria, Victoria Police, Transport Accident Commission (TAC), Monash University Accident Research Centre and VicRoads.

The group was also informed by VicRoads’ online consultation hub, which had 4467 visitors during the 29 March - 26 April consultation period.

However, of those visitors, 326 contributed comments, and 231 actively joined the discussion forums on memorials.

The participants were split down the middle on whether memorials should have a consistent design, with half stating that memorials should be “unique and personal to support people grieving”, and the other half wanting consistent appearance to reduce driver distraction or upsetting those linked to the victims.

Some of the participants suggested nonreligious standard markers, such as those used in South Australia.

A VicRoads survey of 178 people found 63 per cent of respondents were in favour of roadside memorials to remember loved ones, and that 61 per cent said memorials encouraged safer driving.

However, 54 per cent said that memorials could be distracting for drivers and 53 per cent supported a consistent look for memorials.

The Mail contacted VicRoads with questions about the proposed changes, including whether public comments would shape or change some of the proposals.

A spokesperson said the paper proposed guidelines and principles for further feedback.

“It is not a final policy position,” the spokesperson said.

The full paper is available at consult.vicroads.vic.gov.au/roadside-memorial, and residents are still able to comment on the paper and its proposals.

After the latest consultation stage, the new Roadside Memorial Policy will be submitted to VicRoads’ senior leaders for approval - if approved, the new policy will be in place in the second half of the year.

Is this the council that limited clearing ahead of bushfire season?

Is this the council that refused to let us remove a tree that tried to kill us by dropping a bough within seconds of our car passing through?

Sometimes we railed against prescriptive regulation.

But we put up with it because, like that once-was council, we value the unique culture of our region and would like to see it preserved for future generations.

On Monday, 4 May, some 2000plus residents received a letter from council, effectively giving a mere four weeks to comment on Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme Amendment C146 - Intensive Animal Husbandry, which seeks to remove the current prohibition on intensive animal husbandry in the Green Wedge Zones.

I suggest this is a small problem to which council might choose to turn a blind eye under the present guidelines.

But if council broadens the scope of farming activity by its amendment, then it unofficially broadens the scope for subterfuge and the whole ethos of the Hills and the Valley will be lost. Once set in motion, Amendment C146 might well prove impossible to reverse.

Under the amendment, the council will have the ‘discretion’ to consider applications for intensive animal husbandry.

Will it be strong enough to withstand the persuasive powers of big business?

Will it be strong enough to withstand the financial lure of foreign investment?

The present council may well be providing a future council with the necessary stepping-stone to follow a different, more mercenary agenda.

Amendment C146 has repercussions for the whole community.

A change of wind and the evil

stench could settle over local townships.

Remember the broiler farm at the Monbulk end of Old Emerald Road?

And who will pay for the necessary road upgrades to cope with heavy traffic bringing food in, and transporting stock? This change has the potential to adversely affect the lives of local townsfolk as well as the immediate stakeholders.

I urge council to reconsider.

Potato produce takes the cake

CHRISTINA de Sousa sees a lot of similarities between selling potato cakes and practising psychology.

“I was very good at being a psychologist because it was about developing relationships and trust,” she said.

But five years ago, she left that career behind to join the family business - potato farm Mountain Harvest Foods in Gembrook.

“In business, it’s about establishing a trusting relationship with your customers, with your staff, with the market,“ she said.

“It’s about developing that relationship with people and then asking them to change.

“As a psychologist, I would provide them with skills, and here I provide them with products.”

The 34-year-old mother of two was a Young Manufacturer of the Year finalist at last month’s Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

“It was a real honour to be recognised,” Ms de Sousa said.

She grew up on the potato farm her family has owned since 1946, and joined the business in 2010 when it expanded into potato cake manufacturing.

“I never thought in my wildest dreams growing up as a child that I would be an influential and central part of the business,” she said.

“When they approached me, I was six months pregnant with my second child and then I was basically off on maternity leave,

“It was maybe something I’d do while the kids were sleeping.

“I didn’t step into it thinking that my heart was going to be taken away with the business, but it was.”

They bought businesses in Geelong and Laverton and relocated them to Gembrook, and Ms de Sousa took on the business, sales and marketing director role.

“We built this purpose-built facility on the farm,” she said.

“A lot of our competitors had been in the market for 20 years or more.

“We were the new people on the block with no real experience in food manufacturing.

“Providing a good service, developing strong relationships and marketing the fact we’re

farm to plate has really made the difference.”

Farm turnover has grown from $1.5 million in 2010 to $10 million today, and the food processing side is turning over $8.5 million a year, up from $1.6 million in 2010.

Mountain Harvest sends out 8000 cartons of 120 potato cakes each month, up from 1500 when it started.

“Our sales stretch as far as Perth, regional News South Wales, to Cairns,” Ms de Sousa said.

They supply sweet potato and zucchini chips for national burger chain Grill’d and a skinon chip to Lord of the Fries’ nine stores.

“That chip has been presented to some celebrity chefs like Guy Grossi and George Calombaris. They use them in their restaurants,” she said.

SNOW season has come at last, with Lake Mountain Alpine Resort opening its gates for its first weekend of winter, bringing eager visitors from around the state.

Crowds of visitors flocked to the mountain’s opening day on Saturday 6 June, for an opening weekend that included toboggan runs, snow-shoe trails and cross-country skiing.

Children were well catered

for, with the resort expanding its Snowman’s Village and running activities such as a flying fox and outdoor laser skirmishes.

Resort manager Scott Gamble said there was “something for everyone” at the resort, and that going to the snow didn’t have to mean strapping on skis and taking on snow sports.

“New snow-shoe trails are a perfect introduction to snow sports and suitable for children

and adults,” Mr Gamble said.

“There are short trails or allday hikes, and is a great way for anyone to experience the beauty of our renowned cross-country trails without having to ski.”

The resort features 40 kilometres of snow trails, and this year opened its Fischer Nordic Demo Centre, where budding skiers can learn skills before hitting the slopes.

Wandin had a good first half and set up its win with a 7-goal-to-1 second quarter to go into halftime with a 48-point lead. The second half was a real shoot out, and Belgrave did take it right up to league leaders. The third term saw both sides slot seven goals in what was a free-flowing, highstandard term. The last quarter saw Belgrave outscore Wandin 5 goals to 4, but it was Wandin’s dominance early in the game which produced their sizeable lead, and it was always going to be too tough to haul in.

Yea looked to have more run in the first half and went into half-time with a 15-point lead, thanks to a 4 goal to 1 second term. Gembrook’s defence in the third was superb as they held Yea scoreless while slotting through three majors of their own to take a seven-point lead going into three-quarter time. The last quarter was a great contest, both sides hit every contest at 100 per cent with the game in the balance right up to the final siren.

Both sides booted three goals for the quarter, but it was Gembrook that held on to win by just five points after a classic encounter.

The second half was a very even contest, with both sides scoring six goals apiece. As hard as Seville battled, they just couldn’t make inroads into Emerald’s lead. Kinglake did lead this clash at half-time by eight points in what was a low-scoring first two quarters, with scores at 4.2 (26) to 2.6 (18). The second half was where Thornton Eildon shone. They stifled Kinglake’s run and was able to force turnovers and make it pay on the scoreboard. They booted 4 goals to 1 in the third to grab an 11-point lead at the last change.

The last quarter was more of the same. In fact, Thornton should have won by more than its eventual 35-point margin as they finished the day, scoring 4.7 to just 1 to win convincingly and put its hand up as a genuine premiership threat.

By KATH GANNAWAY THE most promising young football talent from around the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges headed south over the Queen’s Birthday Weekend to represent the DRJFL in the annual interleague competition.

The under-11s, under-12s and under-13s players - representing 12 clubs - played in the Price-Purdon Academy Goodwill Youth Program on Sunday in sunny but chilling conditions at Casey Fields.

Under-13 coach, Yarra Glen’s Brad Hall said the competition was an opportunity for the players to compete against kids of the same age level, often with kids they went to school with but who played for different clubs, and to experience different game styles.

“Everyone gets the chance to get good game time and play in different positions.

“It’s about football development, and it’s not a winning and losing thing, there’s still a strong element of participation as well as competitiveness.”

Best-on-ground awards went to Patrick Huynh from Wesburn in the under-11s, Jude Hay from Woori Yallock in the under-12s and Yarra Glen’s Harrison Keeling in the under-13s.

DRJFL representative teams in the under-14s, under-15s, under-16s and under-17s played on Saturday and Monday in the Subway Dandenong Junior Carnival against South East Juniors, Frankston District and Mornington Peninsula.
