Enter ice age

By JOLENE OGLE THE devastating drug ice has made its way to Noosa Shire, with both Cooroy and Noosa Heads police confirming an increase in people caught with the drug in the past month.

Highly addictive and prone to cause aggressive outbursts in users, ice is a damaging drug known to tear

apart families and communities, and Noosa is not immune from its devastating effects.

Noosa Heads officer-in-charge Senior Sergeant Steve McReight said he and his team were discovering more people with ice than before.

“We suspected ice was coming into the area as we are seeing more and more break and enters that we

believe are fuelled by a need to feed the habit,” he said.

“And through raids of homes, we are finding more ice.”

Sen Sgt McReight said more drivers were caught driving with drugs in their system, although they would often admit to smoking marijuana but deny taking ice before driving.

“Which is interesting, as the re-

sults from the lab tests are showing both marijuana and methylamphetamine (ice) in the samples taken from the drivers,” he said.

“The feedback I’m receiving from the crews on the ground is people are not admitting to smoking ice.”

Sen Sgt McReight said ice was becoming more common in Noosa.

As early as Monday afternoon, a Tewantin woman was arrested by

Noosa Heads police after she tried to flee when the police pulled her over.

Police will allege the woman dumped her car at the Tewantin caravan park and ran into the surrounding woods but the Noosa Heads police called in the dog squad who, with the help of two community members, were able to track her.

The ultimate challenge

By JOLENE OGLE WALKING 96km in 39 hours might not seem like a big deal, but when you’re racing the clock, 5000 other competitors and walking through the night, the Kokoda Youth Challenge is about as tough as it gets.

Now in its 10th year, the 96km gruelling trek through the Gold Coast hinterland is the length of the actual Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, and will take competitors along fire trails, across 12 creeks and summits of 5000m of vertical elevation.

Thirteen Noosa District State High School (NDSHS) students are training to take on the challenge along with two teachers, Duke of Edinburgh co-ordinator and team trainer Dean McMaster and Year 11 co-ordinator Bridge Muir.

Mr McMaster competed in the challenge last year and said the event was an “unknown” for the team of students.

“We didn’t know whether we could do the distance or what the resupply and checkpoints would be like. But it actually all worked really well. We did 25 hours, which is a really good time,” he said.

“Personally, I feel more confident this year, and I have a better idea what to do for training. You pick up nutrition and what works and what doesn’t.”

One challenger, Gabbi Hill who competed last year, is strapping her shoes on again to try and beat their time of 25 hours.

“Gabbi Hill is doing it a second time, which is great, but your brain forgets pain very quickly because she swore she’d never put on running shoes again after the last race,” Mr McMaster said.

Training has been underway for weeks, with Mr McMaster pushing the students to complete challenging training sessions every week.

“It’s a bit of a sacrifice for these kids,” he said.

“They give up a quite a bit of time in training. We usually train on the weekend and it’s getting to the stage where we go the whole day training. Once you start doing the longer walks you’re doing six to 10 hours.”

“It’s pretty tough. It sounds easy to walk 96km, but it’s steep and it takes a toll especially at 4am in the morning.”

Year 11 co-ordinator Bridge Muir said she had been busy with extra training sessions to make sure she was ready for the challenge.

The students have received their team shirts, nutrition and essential competition gear needed for the challenge that will take place on 18 July in the Gold Coast hinterland.

In his monthly report to Cooroy businesses, Sergeant Mal Scott of Cooroy police said quantities of ice had been located throughout the Cooroy area.

“Police are very keen to stop the spread of this very dangerous and highly addictive drug,” he said.

Sgt Scott is calling for any information from the community that could help prevent the spread of ice throughout Cooroy.

“Any information in regards to the use and or supply of this drug would be very much appreciated,” he said.

Sgt Scott’s comments come after a number of raids on Cooroy and surrounding hinterland homes resulted in 14 people charged with 29 drug-related charges.

Treasury rates Noosa ‘sound’ NOOSA Council’s financial health is “sound” and its future financial outlook “positive”, according to a Queensland Treasury Corporation credit review .

Council CEO Brett de Chastel this week welcomed the result as a strong endorsement of council’s prudent financial management.

“This is an excellent result, especially considering we’re a new council and we’ve had only a short period of time to establish our financial systems,” Mr de Chastel said.

The “sound” rating reflects positive budget performance, fore-

cast operating surpluses, low borrowings and council’s zero-based budgeting approach.

“QTC’s original financial assessment in 2012, prior to deamalgamation, gave the proposed Noosa Council a moderate rating with a neutral outlook,” Mr de Chastel said.

“On a scale of 1 to 7, we have already gone from a 4 (moderate) to a 5 (sound). Our new council is in stronger financial shape than originally predicted and while we are confident we are on the right track, having an independent body

like the Queensland Treasury Corporation confirm this, is excellent.”

Mr de Chastel said council was well positioned to improve its credit review rating further in future.

The report was mainly positive for Noosa Council stating council is on track to achieve their 2015 budget and also has the capacity to increase net rates, levies and charges with a forecasted growth in net rates and utility charges of 2.9 per cent per annum between 2016 and 2019.

The report said the rate in-

crease was “modest” and said the increase “may provide NSC with some capacity to increase rates and charges further, if required”.

The review also confirmed the cost of de-amalgamation at $2.6 million and praised council for re-establishing systems and operations after the split from Sunshine Coast Council in 2014. “(Noosa Council) has restructured core activities and negotiated key supply contracts, enabling operating costs and employee numbers to be reduced while largely maintaining service levels,” the review said.

Revved up to deliver even more THE number of meals being produced in the Pomona and District Meals on Wheels kitchen has dropped significantly from 40 clients to just 28.

Kitchen supervisor Di Donaldson said a lack of awareness was one of the factors behind the drop in client numbers and is urging those eligible to sign up for the service.

Ms Donaldson said the meal service is a great service as it allows some elderly and incapacitated people to stay in their home rather than move to care.

Hot meals as well as cold and frozen meals for the non-delivery days are delivered to the door in the Pomona, Cooroy East and West, Eumundi, Cooran and Boreen Point areas, with meals

starting from just $8.50, subject to the subsidy.

“Meals are available to not only the elderly but also those recuperating from illness or an operation or for other reasons that may affect their access to nutritionally sounds, home-cooked meals,” Ms Donaldson said.

More than 30 volunteers help produce the meals every week,

more volunteers are welcome.

Ms Donaldson said new clients are recommended to apply for the service before the end of June as eligibility will be externally assessed after 1 July.

NOOSA Council is expected to give the final approval to a quad bike tour group to operate in Noosa National Park after a probation period ended in March.

The Cooran business owner made an application to Noosa Council to remove the sunset clause, one that allows council to cancel the tour group if the company did not comply with council’s requirements.

The application was made with the Planning and Organisation Committee last week, but the matter was moved to the General Committee Meeting for further discussion on Monday.

According to the report presented to council, since starting operations in 2013 the tour operator has operated in accordance with council’s conditions.

In the report, the business owner said neither council nor the business itself had received a single complaint regarding the tour operations.

“If anything, we now have full support of several previous incorrectly made submitters opposing our original application,” the business owner said.

“Further, we now have the full consent of all direct neighbours to our property and along the route of the tour, inclusive of National Park neighbours.”

The original business application was approved by Sunshine Coast Council in October 2012 and since then the quad bike tour group, which travels along Tablelands Road, Cooran, to the Woondum National Park, has accommodated 900 guests and is the second most popular sightseeing trip in Noosa on Trip Advisor.

Council is expected to approve the removal of the sunset clause at tonight’s ordinary meeting at the council chambers.

Spotlight on Aussie icons IT WAS the Taylors in the spotlight last week, but this week I would like to turn the attention to a couple of Noosa’s sporting celebrities Dawn Fraser and Evonne Goolagong Cawley.

These two wonderful ambassadors have been busy over the past few weeks doing what they do best, give people inspiration.

The Aussie larrikin Dawn popped in to catch up with her old Olympic mate Betty Cuthbert at her aged care home in Mundurah WA, just to say gidday.

Betty, a four-times Olympic Gold medallist, is wheelchair-bound and almost deaf due to her 46-year battle with multiple sclerosis, and could

They both welled tears of joy when the pair held each other in an embrace that left the staff completely gobsmacked.

Dawn has nothing but admiration for her.

Both Aussie icons are in their

78th year, and it was more than a half a century after they each won gold at the 1962 Commonwealth Games.

The three-time Olympic freestyle champion is baffled by the sprint queen’s resolve.

“She’s as deaf as a doornail but she still has a contagious smile and laughter and that says a lot about a person’’.

All set for poker run NOW in its ninth year, the annual Pomona Poker Run is on again with more than 300 bikes expected to make the 200km Hinterland trip.

Held as part of the leadup to the King of the Mountain Festival, the poker run will see riders travel a 200km course through the scenic Sunshine Coast Hinterland collecting cards along the way.

The ride will set off from Stan Topper Park, Pomona, and finish at the Cooran Football Club where the person with the best poker hand wins the day.

Some great prizes have been donated by sponsors, and there will be prizes for the second best poker hand, the worst poker hand, a ladies draw and raffles on the day, plus the Gympie Historical Motorcycle Club will present a prize for the oldest participating bike.

Poker Run organiser Stephen Stewart said he had seen some awesome bikes take part in the annual event, including two 1930s Indians built with left-hand throttles rather than the standard right-hand.

Forty-five years ago in a small NSW country town Barellan, a young promising tennis player got a break that would allow her to achieve her first dream-play tennis and be a champion.

The local community rallied to help cover the costs of going to train in Sydney, buy clothes and suitcase.

Evonne says, “if it wasn’t for their support I probably wouldn’t be here today”.

Along with her husband Roger, her foundation’s CEO, they have visited at least three centres in every state in the past 15 months, hosting clinics.

While winning Wimbledon is the thrust of this national initative,

Evonne’s other goal is that every child remains at school.

“I’ll help kids achieve their dreams, but they have to stay at school and find out there where they want to be.”

Their foundation has given out 43 scholarships, and all recipients are at really good schools.

Indigenous players between the ages 5 and 15 are invited to a tennis ‘come and try day’, with the Cawleys’ simple resolution ‘hopefully they will have a good time and will want to keep playing’.

New lease of life for bilbies

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL EXCITEMENT was in the air at Good Shepherd Lutheran College’s Monday assembly with the school community welcoming former Olympic champion Dawn Fraser and a live bilby into their midst.

As patron of Save the Bilby Fund, Dawn joined the organisation’s co-founder Frank Mathney and current CEO Kevin Bradley at the school to officially accept a $33,458.20 cheque, raised by Pink Lady Chocolates.

For the third year running, Pink Lady Chocolates by Fyna Foods, which is manufactured and sold Australiawide, raised the funds through sales of their dedicated chocolate Easter bilbies and its everyday bilby range, to help save the Australian bilby from extinction.

The much-needed funds will be put toward the ongoing conservation efforts including support for a suitably sized insurance population of captive bred bilbies, appropriate and prioritised academic research and expansion of the recovery program to include additional release sites.

Running Glew will fix it

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL FOR more than 30 years, Noosa local Ian Glew has been competing in half-marathons Australia-wide. Indeed he has a swag of medals to his name. While his passion for the challenges has long been to keep up personal health and fitness, and possibly to sneakily get out of a few chores But come July, Glew will be running for an added purpose. Taking his place in the 37th annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon, to be held 5 July, Ian will be running to raise money to sponsor a young person to attend a Youth Insearch Camp.

Youth Insearch is a community organisation that coordinates weekend programs focused on resolving adolescent issues at a peer level for young people aged between 12-17 years.

An early-intervention program, Youth Insearch works alongside welfare agencies, schools and local police to identify ‘at-risk’ youth that will benefit from the program with the aim of reducing crime, substance abuse, binge drinking and preventing suicide in young people, as well as enhance self-esteem and productivity through empowering youth.

TOURISM Noosa have promised to do everything it can to ensure the future of the Noosa International Food and Wine Festival (NIFW) despite the festival company entering voluntary administration last week.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said Tourism Noosa is “extremely disappointed for Jim Berardo and all concerned” following the recent announcement Noosa Food and Wine Events Pty had appointed a voluntary administrator.

“Tourism Noosa has supported the Noosa International Food and Wine Festival since its inception 12 years ago,” Mr Massingham said.

In a media statement, company owner Jim Berardo attributed the closure of both his iconic Noosa restaurant Berardo’s and the Noosa Food and Wine Events Pty company to a number of factors including rain and a loss of revenue. “(The rain) coupled with a lethargic economy which made sponsorship and discretionary spending extremely challenging, necessitated the unfortunate action I am now taking,” he said.

THE King of the Mountain Festival (KoM) has been dealt a blow after Cooroy-based soft drink company Wimmers pulled their naming right sponsorship from the annual festival.

The festival is due to take place on Sunday 26 July, but a media release from the King of the Mountain committee confirmed the end of the naming sponsorship deal.

Noosa Today contacted Wimmers who said they were “disappointed” and “frustrated” at the outcome of the festival’s future plans, saying they believed the festival was heading in a different direction.

Pomona KoM Festival chairperson Heather Manders said planning was well underway despite the sudden loss of the festival’s primary sponsor and said the split was amicable.

“Although there was a strong push to create a much larger, multi-day affair staged by an event company, our feedback is that yet another big, brassy, professional event isn’t what our community wants,” she said.

“People sometimes enjoy a slower pace and the sense of belonging that comes from attending small-town festivals that are about participation and fun, not just about making money.”

Other festival sponsors have stayed on board including Bendigo Bank, who has committed $6000 to the festival to sponsor the Mountain Challenge.

Green light expected for servo

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL DESPITE concerns voiced by local businesses, the proposed development of a 24-hour fuel station, convenience store and fast food outlet for 139 Eumundi Noosa Road is likely to be given the go ahead from Noosa Council.

The development plan was first discussed by the council on Tuesday 26 May, however it was brought back this week due to issues raised by the Planning and Organisation Committee in regards to the competition the development would pose to local business.

With three industrial snack bars, a cafe and a number of mobile food vans already in close vicinity of the proposed construction, there were views the inclusion of a ‘Tradie Cafe’ would impact negatively on existing locals. Two significant changes were made to the original recommendations with the aim of decreasing the potential impact and to ensure the most effective use of the space.

Firstly, the floor plan was expanded

from 90 square metres to 137 square metres and the outdoor dining area from 43 square metres to 35 square metres to attract a wider range of clientele and provide a different service, where a variety of food retailers could sell their products at the fast food outlet.

Secondly, the operating hours of the fast food outlet, which were originally set for 5am to 6pm, have been changed to 24 hours.

Deputy mayor Bob Abbot said the approval of the 24-hour station was not about a Tradie’s Cafe or competition, but rather the approval was about creating “real opportunity” for people in the community to access some of the small franchise businesses that will go on the site.

“In our modern life, people tend to jump in the car, go get some fuel, maybe get a packet of smokes and a bottle of milk, and hopefully pick up a take-away meal to take home to the kids at night, that’s what this is about - providing a convenience to this community that they do not have,” he said.

Noosaville Snack Bar owner Cindy Carington-King, who was one of the local business owners who wrote to councillors to voice concerns about Tradie’s Cafe, said she was “satisfied” with the outcome at the committee meeting.

“We would just like to say that we were happy with the response we got from councillors, they raised our concerns and adjourned the meeting for further review and discussion,” Cindy said.

“We understand the council can’t be anti-competition and we think we got the best possible outcome as it will no longer be an Industrial Snack Bar.” Cindy said she wanted to encourage other businesses to keep updated on happenings in the shire and to speak up when they had concerns.

“If you see these signs (development notification signs), find out what’s going on sooner rather than later. Take up your concerns with the council. From our experience you will be heard,” Cindy said.

A final decision is likely to be made at Thursday’s council meeting.

Stanton stands up for Wide Bay THE ALP has endorsed local small business owner Lucy Stanton as their Labor candidate for Wide Bay in the coming Federal Election.

Ms Stanton, who has lived in Boreen Point for the past 16 years, is among the first group of candidates to join Bill Shorten’s federal ALP team.

Mr Stanton previously ran

School primed for fair result WITH the sun shining and warm autumn weather, hundreds visited the 2015 St Andrew’s Family Fun Fair on Saturday with rides, stalls and food galore, there was no shortage of things to enjoy with a big fireworks display to end what was a perfect day.

Principal Chris Ivey said there were very few events in the life of the college that bring everyone together, and this year’s fair was no exception.

“It is always amazing to see the real sense of community that comes out of such an event. It was an fantastic day and I think it was our best ever fair”, Mr Ivey said.

Unique creations on show

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL SIXTEEN hundred degree heat combined with acid, copper and glass. While Noosa resident Barbara Kelly does not consider herself a scientist, her passion for enamelling finds her regularly experimenting for her art. Moving to Noosa from Brisbane three years ago, the local artist will be sharing her creations with the community in an upcoming exhibition at Noosaville library.

Self-taught, Barbara has been taking on the style for the past 40 years.

“I was bringing up two small children, and so was house-bound and needed something to keep me entertained,” Barbara said.

“I came across a book on Limoge in France and became fascinated by the incredible art technique.”

“I started with jewellery and bowls, but then turned to painting for a greater challenge, and I’ve stuck with that for the last 20 years,” Barbara continued.

Intrigued by the science behind the art, Barbara loves to experi-

ment with a wide variety of enamels and glass.

“It’s really about reactions of the copper, glass and immense heat,” Barbara said.

“I like that the glass has a mind of its own.

“You can put the painting in the kiln one way and you never quite know for sure how it will turn out.

“It can either surprise or disappoint.”

With each piece taking up to 10-12 hours of solid work, it is hoped that there are more success stories in Barbara’s kiln than not.

If her latest collection is anything to do by, then that has certainly been the case, the vivid colours of her works eye-catching from afar but even more intriguing closer up.

Interestingly, the kiln which Barbara uses for her pieces is the same one that she bought back in 1970.

“It’ll be interesting to see who retires first, me or the kiln,” she laughed.

Twenty of her pieces will be on display at Noosaville Library from 14 - 28 June.

LIKE most girls her age, Wilara Turner has a cupboard full of make-up.The 16-year-old’s collection however, is far from your average muddle of cosmetics.

Piling a few items together, Wilara pulls out a small bottle of fake blood, three excessively large palettes of vibrant face paint and a rather revolting rubber hand.

A Year 11 student at Good Shepherd Lutheran College, Wilara is an incredibly talented make-up artist, whose passion for all things gore has already gained her recognition and a few assignments.

A recent example of her work was the make-up of the entire cast in her school’s musical production of The Addams Family.

Earlier this year, she also worked on a short film on the Gold Coast and will soon be working on a theatre show in Caloundra. Self-taught, Wilara said it was her love of theatre and gore that had got her into theatrical make-up.

“I’ve always been really into theatre, but it was Halloween that really got me into it,” she said.

“Every girl likes normal make-up, but what I really love is creating special effects; cuts, bruises, burns.

“It’s amazing what you can do.”

Currently completing a Diploma of Cinamographic Make-up in Brisbane, Wilara is certainly dedicated to her passion. Getting up every Friday at

“And I love how the make-up is what brings the movie to life.”

While most of her work is not for the faint hearted, there is no denying her talent. “Most of my work comes from my own imagination,” she said.

“And I am very lucky to have a very co-operative brother who often does the modelling.

“Actually my whole family is very supportive - I turned them all into zombies once.”

With her eyes set on Hollywood, Wilara is well on her way to achieving her dreams.

“In five years, I can see myself starting out a career in the movies, whether that’s just sweeping the floor or pouring coffees,” she said.

“By 10 years, hopefully I will be

One big morning tea

NOOSA Yacht and Rowing Club drew a sellout crowd last Thursday as locals gathered to participate in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. Together they managed to raise over $3000 for the Cancer Council. A tremendous effort by all involved.

While the Noosa branch of the Cancer Council is a dedicated bunch they are desperate for new members.

The next meeting will be held on Friday 12 June at The Lesiure Centre, Noosaville at 10am. It will be a gardening demonstration and all are welcome.

Art just pops up THE PopUp Art exhibition at Cooroy Butter Factory is now in its second phase as more than 50 local artists prepare works to be shown throughout the month.

During May, the first of the four-part series rolling exhibition showcased the diverse works of over 50 artists and artisans, with pop-up galleries within the exhibition, plus workshops and demonstrations.

Artists were on duty each day to talk to Butter Factory visitors and assist them in studying and understanding the works they were viewing.

Throughout June, visitors will see new works of many who exhibited in the first series plus a number of new contributions by other artists and crafts persons. The second series will be officially opened on Saturday 6 June at 2pm by well-known ceramicist and arts educator, Ellen Appleby.

Locals and region visitors are invited to come along and view the new works including that of some who were not in the first iteration.

Complimentary nibbles and background music by local duet FlashJack will be the order of the day. What better way to spend a leisurely Saturday afternoon?

THE latest Federal Budget certainly had some delightful surprises for small business owners, none more exciting than the planned $20,000 rebate for small business purchases.

What is it and how does it work?

Well, it’s a two-year tax break for small business designed to get people spending by making certain businessrelated purchases fully and instantly tax deductible between 13 May 2015 and 30 June 2017.

The scheme will cost tax payers $1.75 billion and any-

one who has an Australian Business Number (ABN) and turns over less than $2 million a year is eligible for the scheme.

Business owners can buy new or second-hand items for their business, so long as they cost less than $20,000 and relate directly to your business - such as a new computer, office equipment, tables, chairs, and so on.

As an added bonus, anything over $20,000 attracts the assumption the item will depreciate in value at a rate of 15 per cent in the first income year and 30 per cent in the next income year.

So, once the item price falls below $20,000 you can deduct it.

A word of warning, this scheme will only apply if you pay more tax than what you spend. This is a deduction, not a rebate, plus costs such as marketing aren’t included.

While the scheme is yet to be ratified by the Senate, Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey announced the scheme started at 7.30pm on budget night, 12 May. Check with your accountant for all the details of the scheme to make sure you are buying what’s right for your business.

WHILE I can understand the pilot, Mr Perry’s sentiment that the dogs were better behaved than anyone he’s met on a flight from Bali to Australia, I am having problems with him spending most of his flight time apologising to the dogs for what he calls the “Australian bureaucratic mess“.

Perhaps Mr Perry’s time on that long flight might have been better spent convincing the dogs to convey to their owner that he, in fact, owes Australia a big and open apology?

Mr Depp would have been fully aware of our laws, our rabies free status and the penalties associated.

He deposited the dogs onto his plane, knowing this. He then blatantly lied on his entry forms.

Just who does he think he is? A friend made a silly mistake 20 years ago involving drugs.

He still cannot get even a tourist visa to enter the U.S. These are OUR laws, Mr Depp. Respect them or keep out. We love our animals rabies free.

It beggars belief that some would defend Mr Depp’s actions, just because of his “fame”, including the current federal opposition.

If it had been an Australian citizen bringing animals back, would they have met leniency?

I think not.

Friends of ours from New Zealand, a safe country, were fined $200 for having an apple in their bag which the grandson didn’t eat on the flight over.

No second chances or room for understanding there.

will send hundreds of extra coal ships through the area, increasing the risk of oil spills and other accidents which can be detrimental to Australia’s valuable reef.

The Queensland Labor government has done exceeding well to keep UNESCO’s draft decision for the Great Barrier Reef from being classed as in danger which would have seen the loss of tens of thousands of jobs related to this wonder of the world and millions of tourists who visit the reef from around the globe.

How has Labor done this?

It has reinforced legislation to prohibit the dumping of capital dredge soil in the World Heritage Area, confined industrial port development and expansion to major ports and protect the magnificent Fitzroy River Delta from port development, and injecting an addition $100 million into improvement of water quality and fishing licence buy-backs.

Only Labor has a proven record of protecting this natural wonder of the world.

Pat on the back HOW refreshing to see a story about one of our councillors speaking out about the need to show some positive thinking. Well done Bob Abbot!

Sadly this council will be remembered by its inaction and negativity.

On the subject of negativity, it appears to be ‘open season’ on backpackers and the like with the recent spate of articles with the usual taste of vitriol and intolerance.

These people (generally young people) are terrific human beings, surprisingly very alike our children or grandchildren wishing to explore the world on their limited budget while many of these young people provide the workforce for agricultural jobs that are too menial for our Aussie young.

Perhaps Noosa people might take the opportunity to engage them in conversation and offering some kindness instead of “hunting them out of town“.

How about our local councillors thinking about providing council facilities, that is toilets/showers/power, with payment by coin in the slot as is done by other proactive and more generous councils.

Perhaps somewhere like the football grounds, with the exclusion of weekends.

It must be exciting to make decisions that are going to provide a positive outcome and be remembered for it. Good luck.

Support our town AT A time when so many of our local businesses in Eumundi are struggling to survive, and many more closing down, it is exasperating to think that some of our local residents, namely the EDV group members, are still snubbing our local community by supporting and shopping in Noosa.

More than ever, now is the time to stick with our local shops.

Our town is slowly dying and having the EDV group residents still claiming that they prefer having their hair cut and their coffee in Noosa is insulting to our town which has nothing less than 10 coffee shops!

If these residents are not willing to support our community, they should simply move out.

Bats out of hell IT IS quite obvious from recent discussions and lengthy correspondence with both senior members of Noosa Council staff and some councillors that they have not been to see or experience the now plague proportions of bats in Wallace Park.

Yet they say that the decision to virtually contain the bats in the park and not disperse them for fear that they will relocate in other areas or places nearby is based on “empirical studies”. Residents are well aware that such studies are not based on scientific fact or theory.

Tony Wellington, who is affiliated with the NPWA, has put in writing that affected residents who do not appreciate the smell, noise and stench of the bats in Wallace Park “can be advised to get double glazing on windows to reduce noise”.

No doubt at their own expense, yet something like $400,000 or more has been spent on the construction of 100 metres of pathway along Wallace Park, taking several weeks and by a private contractor under council supervision.

It is amazing what projects funds can be found to do.

Both Peter Milne and Tony Wellington have claimed that they have individually only received one complaint about the bats since last January.

I, personally am receiving between three and five calls a week, as well as being stopped in the street, by people who are now very distressed about the suffering and torment they are experiencing by the bats’ presence near their homes, in their streets, and in their gardens, and with Noosa Council’s attitude of “let’s do nothing... they will go away themselves”.

All those people since last January and before have been referred to both council and the CEO Peter Milne which, in anyone’s language, would mean that there was more than one complaint not to mention the many letters, phone calls to him and Tony Wellington received from local residents that I am aware of.

If there was a Noosa Council election soon, and the bats remain in Wallace Park for much longer, I would feel quite confident that none of our present councillors would be re-elected.

This is not a joke, time and time again local residents and ratepayers are fobbed off stating that the bats will be gone in three years citing Lake Weyba etc, but that has not happened in Wallace Park.

Instead the bats have multiplied and multiplied and multiplied, and we have plague proportions of every type of bat imaginable.

I have been writing to the Mayor on a weekly/monthly basis for a couple of years ‘Bat report from Bat Haven’ and that is what Wallace Park has become, a bat haven, but, unfortunately, at the cost of local residents’ health, sanity and welfare.

It will be interesting to see if a change of council and some senior officers will produce different results.

We can only hope.

Positive signs in house price lift BRISBANE is the fastest-selling area in Queensland and also had the strongest lift to median house values for the year ending March 2015, according to the latest REIQ release.

According to the REIQ median values data report, Brisbane’s days on market statistic is just 57 - the fastest in the state. This is an improvement by eight days, compared with a year ago.

The data shows Cairns has been a standout performer over the past 12 months, with profit-making sales leaping from 78 per cent of transactions making a profit to 90 per cent.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the data confirmed the REIQ’s position that Queensland was in the grip of steady, sustainable growth.

“This report supports the REIQ’s long-held view that those areas of Queensland that have been doing well are continuing to do well,” she said.

“Those areas that are struggling to recover from the resources downturn are still trying to stabilise.

But what we don’t have is the start of another boom and bust cycle, which, as we all know by now, doesn’t really benefit anyone in the long term.”

Standout trends from the report include the general sustainable lift of median house values across the south-east, Toowoomba and the

tourism centres.

“It’s great to see Brisbane and Toowoomba keeping that steady rate of growth that we’ve seen for the past 12 months,” Ms Mercorella said.

“We all know the economy is still recovering and property is clearly leading the way. People trust property and whether you’re an owner occupier or an investor, property has shown to be a reliable performer over the long term.”

Brisbane (LGA) median house values have risen by 1.6 per cent over the quarter, and, along with Toowoomba, this was the highest quarterly increase.

Brisbane (LGA) proportion of profit-making sales increased three percentage points to 96 per cent, compared with a year ago.

Meanwhile, Toowoomba holds the state’s record with 98 per cent of all houses sold recording a profit for the seller.

Also in Toowoomba, the quarterly growth in median house values is the strongest in the state, averaging an increase of 1.9 per cent over the past four quarters.

Outside of Brisbane, Toowoomba is the fastest selling region, with days on market at 63 days, and the Garden City continues to hold the lowest vendor discounting rate of 4.7 per cent.

Five of the major regions throughout Queensland are experiencing steady improvements in median house values.

Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Cairns, all showed rising annual median house values of approximately 1.5 per cent to 1.9 per cent on average each quarter over the past year.

Gladstone’s median house values increased by 0.8 per cent, which, although small, is significant because it is the city’s first move into positive territory in five quarters.

The rate of decline in Mackay’s median values appears to be slowing, with a drop of just one per cent to its annual median value in the March quarter.

Other indicators reveal that Mackay is still stabilising, with the annual trend of days on market increasing by four days over the March quarter.

Townsville’s median house values rose 0.7 per cent, which reflects the small improvements that that have been seen in other economic indicators.

Townsville’s proportion of profitmaking sales continues to remain stable at 74 per cent, since August last year.

Brisbane is leading the market as the fastest-selling area in Queensland.

The weather of course but the many sporting opportunities one has at our disposal. I worked in Brighton in Victoria selling real estate and found the traffic was a major problem back then, but here in Noosa you have basically roundabouts and far less traffic to worry about. So we are really lucky in that way. And selling real estate here in Noosa is such a blessing. It has to be one of the best places to live in the world.

I did sell a lot of TV personalities’ properties and well-known sporting celebrities homes in those days.

I would have loved to watch the greatest ever boxer Muhammad Ali fight or Usain Bolt the fastest ever person to hold both 100m and 200m records run in the Olympics, or the great Ian Thorpe win his gold medals in 2001 where he won all 200m, 400m, 800m and 4x200m freestyle races in the world championships in world record times.

NPA FRIDAY FORUM FOXES cause dramatic impacts on the native fauna of Australia. Coastal dunes and beaches, and threatened species inhabiting the coastal fringe of sandy shorelines, are no exception.

The Friday Environment Forum guest speaker on 5 June is Marion Brown who is currently conducting a PhD research project at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Her project involves setting camera traps in the beach dune interface to record the effects of invasive foxes on native wildlife in coastal areas.

This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration. A toast to one of their own IT was with great pleasure Noosa Toastmasters awarded their first annual scholarship to an up-and-coming member of the club.

Monique Daniels, a Year 10 student at St Teresa’s Catholic College, joined Toastmasters last year and has consistently shown the will to develop her public speaking and leadership skills.

Monique has completed several projects from the Competent Communicator manual and has even taken the step of being Toastmaster (MC) during a meeting.

“She is enthusiastic and committed and it was wonderful to be able to offer a young person such encouragement," Noosa Toastmasters president Tim Topalov said.

Her scholarship covers 12 months worth of fees and will allow Monique to continue her journey towards being a competent communicator. The award was a surprise to Monique who had no idea of the club’s plans.

Hill climb says thanks TWICE a year, Gyndier Drive on Noosa Hill is the venue for The Noosa Hill Climb - a local motor sport event that has been running for 18 years - and just keeps getting better.

From historic racers to modern-day performance vehicles, drivers race their vehicles up the hill against the clock.

The Noosa Hill Climb has become one of the most popular National Hill Climb events.

Last year, the events attracted over 240 entrants from Queensland and Interstate.

The Noosa Car Club wanted to thank the Noosa Council for recognising the popularity of the Noosa Hill Climb and for helping the event organisers with vital improvements for the running of this event at Gyndier Drive.

Noosa Car Club vice-president Graeme Block said the council’s support was important and helped the club keep up the standard of the event.

Club members met with the Noosa mayor Noel Playford and councillors recently to present a plaque to show their appreciation.

Aqua aerobics reaping rewards FITNESS instructor Delia Thomas says attending a recent international fitness convention made her realise just how fit the ladies in her aqua aerobics classes at the Noosa Aquatic Centre (NAC) are.

Seniors celebrate in style MORE than 100 organisations and community groups across Queensland will share in $100,000 in subsidies to run activities and events during Seniors Week.

Seniors Minister Coralee O’Rourke announced the successful recipients, who would help to celebrate Seniors Week this year from 15-23 August.

“Seniors Week is a wonderful

opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contribution of older people in our community,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“The week is also about building stronger relationships between older and younger Queenslanders which is acknowledged in this year’s theme: ‘It’s on for young and old’.

“There are hundreds of activities

from expos to fun days planned to run throughout Queensland communities this year, and I look forward to attending some of them.”

Seniors Week is co-ordinated by the Council on the Ageing Queensland (COTAQ), which receives Queensland Government funding to collaboratively plan, run and subsidise Seniors Week events and activities.

Part-pension anomaly deflates AIR THE Association of Independent Retirees (AIR) has warned the government that changes to partpension eligibility will negatively impact over 300,000 retirees.

AIR Limited president Max Barton warned the combination of the reduction in the assets threshold for part pension eligibility to $820,000 for a couple with their own home and the accelerated cut in the withdrawal of the part pension or taper above $385,000, will mean a reduction or abolition of a pension or part pension for over 300,000 elderly Australians.

“These are people who, at the urging of the government, diligently saved for their retirement, under superannuation rules which are now to be changed,” Mr Barton said.

“Those with $850,000 invested, which is slightly above the asset threshold cut-off could be worse off than those with only $400,000 invested as the latter will receive almost the full pension.

Mr Barton said the changes would mean those affected would have to reconsider their retirement strategy and there would be a “perverse incentive” to reduce their invested capital by lump sum withdrawal to be eligible for their previous entitlement.

“Even if they don’t, for those with an account-based pension the increased percentage compulsory drawdown on their capital as they grow older will make them become full pensioners earlier than before,” he said.

ment to moderate the more severe rate of drawdown percentage increase for people in their eighties and nineties as people are now living longer in retirement. Retirees need significant assets to fund their retirement, including their everyday living income and other expenses, for an expected 30 plus years; their ability to adequately provide for this period of time in retirement may now be impacted by this decision.”

Mr Barton said the decreasingly low interest on the savings of older self-funded retirees in particular exacerbates the cash flow situation as that is where their money was principally invested.

“If $42,000 annual income is now considered necessary for a basic and modest retirement for

Mr Barton recommended the government take the time to finetune these anomalies as the new arrangements are not due to commence until 2017.

“AIR has no argument with a fair pension for those who have not been able or encouraged to save, but the Government now has a task to restore faith in the retirement system and provide incentive to self-funded retirees, the majority of whom survive on lowincome streams,” he said.

THE fifth annual Deus Nine Foot and Single Logger Festival in Canggu, Bali, last weekend was a whole lot of fun, and as per usual, a very Noosa affair, with the judging panel headed up by your columnist and former Noosan Steve “Monty” Montell, a whole tribe of talented young (and not so young) Noosa surfers dominating the Nine Foot And Over, Nine Foot and Under divisions and the Womp Comp, and Noosa surf pioneer and shaping legend Bob McTavish presiding over the whole event like a gnomic grey guru.

Bob put an interesting thought to me while we shared a few glasses of wine at the Deus Temple of Enthusiasm.

He said: “Do you know why there are so many Noosa surfers making an impact on the world stage? They’ve grown up with the Festival of Surfing, been influenced by the best, and they’ve been noticed by the best.”

I hadn’t quite thought of it like that, but it’s certainly true, not just of longboarding but of all the retro surf arts, that Noosa’s impact is being felt around the world. And hell, we didn’t even have the full team here.

With a high quality international field gathered at Canggu, among the Noosa surfers to stand out were Deus team riders Zye Norris and Matt Cuddihy, surfer/shaper Thomas Bexon, Fraser Biden and former Noosa locals Dylan Kaczmerik and Munro Montell. But the stand-out surfer of the entire festival was yet again Noosa’s Harrison Roach who surfed with style and grace in every heat in every division, including back-to-back finals in bodysurfing and logging in tricky and challenging overhead waves.

Leah Dawson cuts a fine figure in and out of the water.

I’ve seen him surf beautifully in competition and free surfing many times before, but last weekend at the Rivermouth Right, he was in a class of his own, winning logger, shortboard and bodysurf divisions.

Equally impressive in her own way was Floridian Leah Dawson, who now lives in Hawaii but has managed to spend quite a bit of time in Noosa of late, shooting video with cinematographer Greg Huglin. Leah surfed beautifully in the women’s invitational, but really shone when she did battle with the boys in the Nine Foot And Under division, handling some massive drops and tricky double-ups with casual style on a single-fin gun.

Leah is just at the start of an elongated stay in Bali, and is soon to move out to Uluwatu with boyfriend Alex Lopez, son of Hawaiian surf legend Gerry Lopez, who will also be heading this way next week to run one of his

celebrated surf and yoga retreats. Although I don’t think I can keep up with Ulu’s falling curtains any more, I think I might have to sneak out there to catch Leah trading carving turns with Lopez pere et fils. Now that will be something to see.

Karmically cleansed I was having a bliss attack last week and was unable to describe our “karmic cleansing ritual” at Four Seasons Jimbaran Bay. To tell you the truth, I’m not really a pampering spa bath kind of guy, but when this ridiculously expensive treat was offered gratis, I decided to leave my prejudices at the door with my clothes.

Actually, there was no door and no spa as such. At the appointed hour, a charming lady arrived in a buggy at our villa with yoga suits for us to change into. Then we were transported to a simple bale overlooking Jimbaran Bay

where our master put us through some basic yoga, chanting and meditation. You know, the usual stuff I like to do before cocktail hour!

After this another change of robes and a sexy little black thong for an under garment.

Now it was getting really interesting. This was where I started to float off a bit, so I’ll defer to the hotel’s own description of what comes next: “Your journey of self-renewal begins with a traditional “sound bath”: using Balinese gongs, expert healers will soothe your nervous system and lead you to a state of tranquillity. A Balinese massage follows, using long strokes, gentle skin rolling and deep kneading techniques.”

Next a Balinese priest appeared out of nowhere to “complete your enlightening experience with a karmic cleansing ritual employing age-old rites, incense, flowers and pure Hindu holy water. You’ll emerge energised and ready to explore the beauty around you with a new perspective.”

Strangely, it was all that and a bit more. A beautiful and moving experience, followed by a delicious salad, eaten as the sun set over the bay. I wouldn’t say that I’m going to race out and join the Eat, Pray, Love mamas who roam from spa to spa hoping that Javier Bardem will jump out from behind the bamboo, but I will be a little less cynical about the whole deal.

Say it ain’t so, Jim ALTHOUGH the news was not entirely unexpected, following a few rumbles from the jungle telegraph in recent weeks, I was saddened to read Jim Berardo’s statement confirming an end to an era of food, wine and style in Noosa.

As he noted in his statement, Jim, along with partner Greg, has poured heart and soul into his twin endeavours of fine restaurant and fine food and wine festival over the last decade and a half, and as an event director who has recently had to take a step backwards in the interest of health, I know how personally taxing such a grand obsession can be.

But Jim should feel justly proud at what he has done to put Noosa on the culinary map of the world. Let’s hope the Noosa International Food and Wine Festival can rise Lazarus-like in 2016. And Jim, take a rest, man!

Feast on food, glorious food NOOSA Junction offers a host of great restaurants to choose from, but what happens when you can’t decide on just one for dinner?

Noosa Junction presents the progressive dinners starting 10 June and incorporating Noosa Junction’s best restaurants.

The progressive dinners are a great way to enjoy a course from three different restaurants, while strolling through the Junction.

The Flava Feast kicks off on Wednesday 10 June from 6.30pm with the Mediterranean Night the first in a series of four dinners.

Diners will start their night at the Noosa Hot Bread Shop with a classic French bistro-style entre of pork rillettes and duck liver parfait with pickles and warm baguette, followed by main course of wild boar ragu sauce at Ipazzi restaurant and then dessert at Gelato Classico Noosa who will serve crema Italiana gelato and choc chip berry gelato in a waffle bowl with fresh local pineapple and strawberries.

The next dinner is on Wednesday 17 June and will take diners on a trip across the sea of Japan on the Orient Nights Flava Feast, followed by the Chilli Night on Wednesday 24 June.

The final Flava Feast night is on Wednesday 1 July and will be a true celebration of flavour with tapas at Shades Cafe and Wine Bar, before guests enjoy a tasting plate at Taco Boy and then tempting dessert treats from Quenchers to finish the night.

Tickets to the Noosa Junction Flava Feast progressive dinners are available now. The cost is $50 per person plus booking fee and can be booked online at www. HEAD chef of Tewantin-Noosa RSL Dwayne Purdie has created an extensive new menu aimed at offering restaurant quality meals at value prices with lots of choices perfect for the coming cooler days and nights. There are four new additions to the breads and light pizza menu including cheesy garlic bread; trio of dips with sourdough; Margherita pizza bread and spice pepperoni pizza bread which are all a great starter to share. A firm winter favourite, crumbed lambs brains returns to the entre menu. Also new to the entre menu is mushroom and bocconcini arancini balls, lemon pepper calamari and natural or Kilpatrick oysters.

On the salad menu is a new Moroccan salmon kale and quinoa salad which is a delicious combination of Moroccan-spiced salmon fillet served on a honey pumpkin, chick peas, olives, kale and quinoa salad tossed with rocket and lemon dressing and topped with tzatziki.

The roasted honey pumpkin, walnut and beetroot salad is another delicious winter salad that has made a debut on the new menu. With candied walnuts, goat cheese, sliced pear and a raspberry vinaigrette this salad is packed full of flavour and for extra decadence a steamed or crispy skinned Atlantic salmon fillet can also be added.

Seafood marinara, carbonara and vegie pasta have all been added to the pasta menu which can all be served with fettuccine, linguini, gnocchi or gluten-free pasta and come with two slices of fresh garlic bread. Jake and Harry’s commitment on defence was unmatched and they were well supported by Jax and Conor.

UNDER 11 Noosa Fins 49 d Eumundi Dragons 0 The U11 Fins are swimming stronger than ever this season.

Five matches, five wins, 227 points scored, 29 points conceded.

They came under pressure from a welldisciplined opponent during this game but soaked it up and kept another clean sheet with solid defence across the line.

In attack the Fins' teamwork created several openings that were brilliantly exploited by the try scorers.

UNDER 15 Noosa 5 drew Maroochydore 5 It was a tough game in the sun at Maroochy between two well matched teams. Maroochy had early dominance in the forwards but Noosa fought back allowing the backs plenty of room to move.

There was great work in the scrum by Kai Marshall and Noah Blake and the line out worked well with Jesse Russell winning a lot of ball.

Tom Seimen and Josh Brooks kept their star centre quiet and broke the line several times.

Sameet Raju scored late in the first half to tie the game up for us.

ROUND 11 UNDER 7 WHITE The mighty Whites had a massive morning of footy with games back to back against the Beerwah Bulldogs.

It was all out attack in game one with Bailey Drinnan crossingfor five tries, Cooper Drinnan and Rhy North both scored doubles.

Jai Bruggy, Cooper Ward, Lukas Byers and Will Macrae ran the ball up as hard as they could.

Sam Proctor tackled his heart out with Cooper Ward earning man of the match.

Game two was a real test with the boys showing wear and tear from a hard day.

The Drinnan boys added another four tries to their tally.

Rhy North, Sam Proctor and Lukas Byers all scored tries.

Jai Bruggy and Cooper Ward again had some great runs and Man of the Match went to the ever improving Will Macrea.

A big thank you to the young referees Blake Wilson and Lachie Proctor.

UNDER 7 YELLOW It was a perfect day for a home game as our boys met with the BeerwahBulldogs.

Jacko was a little ‘ninja’ on the paddock as he led with Hayden and Cooperto to score multiple tries.

Beau and Riley were also very strong in attack

Under 7 Yellow Pirates are using good tackling techniques. as they kept on running hard to rattle the defence.

Jaxon Smith, the Player of the Match, could do no wrong as this well oiled machine was unstoppable in both attack and defence.

Brandon had a target on every opposition player that came his way toensure they didn’t get past him.

Along with Lachlan and the boys, the defence just kept on improving as the game went on.

The boys showed true Pirate spirit and played with passion.

Tim’s encouragement proves to be a winning ingredient in the boys' continued playing success.

UNDER 8 YELLOW Bribie Island proved to be an even match-up for the boys.

The improvement in all the boys has been

outstanding in the first part of the season, the textbook tackling technique is hard for the attack to break, and the hard straight running along with quick play with the ball has them travelling the length of the field on most plays.

The depleted team was a man down from the get go.

Cooper Ward stepped up from under 7s to fill the gap and played well against the bigger boys.

All the boys workedhard across the park.

Both Lincoln and Joe crossed for doubles along with Lachlanand Zahn getting tries.

Zeke was unlucky close to the line but tried all game, his evasive running and long legs makes him a difficult target to bring down.

Pierce continues to throw himself into every tackle and had the defence trying to avoid him.

Thanks to the Drinnan boys for running on at the back end of the game, the injection of fresh legs lifted the boys.

UNDER 9 BLUE The under 9 Blue boys played a great game today!

They were coached by Wayden because coach Barry was away.

It was a very defensive match with lots of feeling on both sides.

The boys were getting their mad on and really ripping into each other!

By JANE MARREN ONE of the premier events of the netball representative calendar has finally arrived and Noosa has teams competing in the 13 and 14-year-old divisions.

The Suzuki State Age Championship is a three-day event from 6 to 8 June that brings together the best of Queensland’s Representative teams.

Associations may enter one team into the 13 to 18-year-old age groups.

The event is hosted at different locations each year and this time they are heading south to the Hinterland District Netball Association at

Noosa's bright and cheery 12s, 13s and 14s get together at a recent carnival for a full team picture.

With games being played across the Saturday, Sunday and Monday it’s sure to be a busy weekend and a great experience for all the players.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to further develop their netball skills and to see how their peers in the same age divisions are performing.

The girls started training in February and have competed at several one-day carnivals at Pine River, Brisbane and at Maroochydore in preparation for this event. Noosa’s younger 12 years team will also be competing in its own premier event - the Challenge Carnival over the weekend of 10 to 12 July.

Kitesurfing an uplifting family affair LIKE the art of kitesurfing, local business Adventure Sports Kitesurf Australia has become an iconic part of Noosa’s culture.

First established back in 1999, the kiteshop was the brainchild of one of Noosa’s renowned locals, Chris De Aboitiz, whose son Keahi has gone on to become twice World Wave Kitesurfing Champion.

Having started as one of the first kitesurfing schools in Australia, the shop’s Gympie Terrace doors officially opened in 2001.

After a number of short-term owners and a name change to Adventure Sports Kitesurf Australia, the Tarr family purchased the business in 2007.

The family run business has continued to share the love of kitesurfing across the coast and expanded the business to include top quality products for SUP (stand up paddle), kayaking and now skate.

In the coming month, the next chapter of the store’s story will begin, with the little blue shop relocating to a larger and more accessible premises at 136 Eumundi Rd Noosaville.

“Kitesurfing has always been an iconic part of the Noosa culture and a passion that is shared by our whole family,” owner Fiona Tarr said.

“Something we pride ourselves in is helping to keep that community culture alive in the sport, and we are confident that the new premises will do this and better service our local customers.”

Teaching the locals to kitesurf has indeed, always been at the heart of the business with the entire Tarr family (Fiona, George and sons Liam and Simon) all lovers of the sport.

As a senior instructor, George has taught hundreds of students over nearly 4000 teaching hours.

Now the teaching mantra has passed to the next generation with their youngest son Liam teaching when he isn’t at school.

Adventure Sports Kitesurf Australia owner George Tarr with Alex from TNT. Adventure Sport Kitesurf Australia is moving to a bigger premises at 136 Eumundi Road, Noosaville later this month.

WHILE karate has long been popular across the world for people of all ages and athletic ability, more and more are turning to the art for self-defence.

Over the past 15 years, Karate Budokan International Noosaville has seen about 2500 people through its doors and currently has 400 students, aged from four years to 72 years, enrolled.

There are a number of reasons people take up the art, whether it be for general fitness, building confidence, co-ordination, focus or self-defence.

Having trained since the age of 12, chief instructor Shihan Wayne MacDonald has 35 years of experience behind him and believes that the sport is becoming increasingly attractive for reasons of selfdefence.

“I believe the importance of self-defence has increased especially in workplaces,” Shihan said.

“Self-defence really has become as important as first-aid with the crime rate skyrocketing.”

Shihan explained however, that the most important thing learnt through karate is not to have to use it.

“Once you take up karate there tends to be a confidence about you that exempts you from fitting into the “victim profile”, this is reflected through the way one speaks, stands and carries themselves.

“No longer are you an easy target and this is often all it takes to deter possible attackers.”

Origin inspires great results

By ANITA ANDERSON THERE was definitely something in the air last Wednesday afternoon at Noosa Junior Touch footy - State of Origin excitement perhaps.

The game between Amigos and Tewantin in the under-10 division got the ball rolling with Amigos coming out on top in a close encounter. Ben, Zac and Broc all played well. Good Shepherd (boys) proved too strong for Sunshine this week. Atticus, Harry and Pedro led their team-mates around the paddock admirably. Pinklets and Good Shepherd (girls) put on a try scoring show with Pinklets being the eventual winners.

Lilliana, Indigo and Dakota all had mighty games. PinkThunder and Purple Strikers played a thriller with only one touchdown the difference at the end of play. Players of the day honours went to Eve, Alla and Paige.

Sunshine Rippers and Banana Splits played an entertaining match in the under-12 division with Banana Splits finishing on top this time around. Monique, Seisia and Grace gave strong performances all game. Touch was definitely the winner in what proved to be the match of the round between STM and Glen’s Guns. Great teamwork was on display from both teams and the score line was deadlocked as the siren sounded. Ryan, Harley and Lochie produced first rate games.

Although Panthers never give up, attitude was once again on display as the Warriors took the points in this match with Parker, Jesi and Jessica having great games.

In the under-14/16 girls, Sunshine Rebels had a win over SBST with Milli, Paris and Georgia showing great skill. NDSHS 8s didn’t go down without a fight against the older and more experienced NDSHS 10s.

Zoe, Jerry-Lee and Jazz played outstanding games. In a close result NDSHS 9s (Green) took the points against NDSHS 7s with Kalen, Charlie and Tayla playing well. In yet another tight result GSLC (Gold) just managed to hold out NDSHS 9s (Blue) with the winning margin being just one touchdown, and GSLC (Maroon) dug deep to hold on against St Andrew's.

The afternoon finished with games in the under-14/16 boys division. NDSHS 7 and 8s put in a gutsy effort in their match with Good Shepherd before Good Shepherd took the game with Connor, James and Max leading the way. Strong defence got The Illuminatis over the line against NDSHS 7 and 8s (Green). Max, Dan and Hayden B. had stellar games. In a close game NDSHS 9s (Blue) took the win over Dodgers with Billy, Ethan and Mitch playing well. With plenty of touchdowns by both teams, NDSHS 9s (Green) just get over the line in their match against The Magic Touch.

If we could please ask any senior players within the club or parents who could spare some time on a Wednesday afternoon to lend a hand by helping out with some of our upand-coming junior refs or by coaching/managing a team it would be truly appreciated.

Last but definitely not least, well done Queensland.

Back in full swing THE 2015 Queensland Amputee Golf Open teed off at Noosa Springs Golf and Spa Resort on the weekend, attracting a field of 60 amputee golfers from all over Australia.

The competitors fought for the Queensland title in five categories; below knee, above the knee, below elbow, above the elbow and multicategory.

Queensland Amputee Golf Association (QAGA) president and last year’s champion Ben Tullipan said it’s the biggest golf event for amputees in Australia.

“We’ve got golfers playing off handicaps ranging from +1 to 36,” Ben said.

Ben, who lost both legs and suffered 63 per cent burns in the 2002 Bali bombings, was given a five per cent chance of survival.

Tullipan said Empower Golf Australia was looking to place a Paragolfer at a Sunshine Coast Golf Club. The charity will train the chosen club’s golf pro on how

Lunching with champion Tiger ONCE again it was a fantastic president's lunch on Saturday at the Tigers’ home ground, with former Richmond great Michael Roach in front of some 75 guests.

A very humble champion of our game who answered every question asked of him and guaranteed he and wife Kerri will be heading back to Noosa.

Roach gave those present a great insight into what playing Aussie Rules was like in the ’80s, and was happy to name Dale Weightman as the best player he had played with and Geoff Southby as his toughest opponent. Once again he rated Wayne Carey as the best player he had ever seen, a common opinion of many footy followers including this writer.

Another memorable function with a massive thank you to all those that helped put the day together.

A great crowd headed down to Weyba Road on Saturday to see the Tigers in action.

The Fiona Winter Realty Noosa Tigers were gallant early but in the end were well beaten by a taller, stronger and more skilful Mayne at Weyba Rd last Saturday in front of a strong crowd.

The local Tigers were outstanding early and their youth and pace were causing the defending premiers many headaches for most of the first half. In fact, the Noosa Tigers were up by 16 points at the

half way mark of the second stanza before their more seasoned opponents began to take control.

The loss of captain and prolific ball winner Tommy McKittrick to a hamstring injury early in the second quarter did not help the Tigers’ cause.

Youngster Jed Brain was fantastic in the first half for the locals with his flair and skill in the forward line eventually finishing with four goals for the game.

Down back Cain Tickner and Robbie Copeland kept on impressing with fierce attack on the footy and aggression.

From half time onwards it was the defending champs who just took control with their bigger bodies, skill level and overhead marking a feature of their dominance.

Unfortunately for Noosa, injuries have struck key players, however that’s never an excuse with depth at the Tigers as good as it’s been for years.

There were plenty of times in the second half where Noosa tried to bridge the gap however poor shooting for goals or basic ill disciplines cost us. In the end the better side won on the day. They were stronger and hit more targets finishing play better than the Tigers.

Garry Wallace down back was magnificent for the Noosa side with a pretty complete fourth quarter effort. His pace and attack on the footy as well as his finishing a constant and a reason why he has been a terrific part of the Noosa gig for so long.

Bushy Copeland who kept the league’s most dangerous player to only one goal was again a great player for Noosa

while, as mentioned earlier, Cain Tickner continues to mark his mark wherever he plays.

Cubby Isles never stopped gathering the footy as usual with Rogers, Brain and Jack Hendrie also amongst the Tigers’ best. I must make mention of the outstanding senior debut of the Nathen Fife look-alike Lachie Cameron whose endeavour and athleticism was not at all lost on many of the Tiger faithful.

Well done Lachie!

A pretty young side fronted up for Noosa last Saturday and while well beaten in the end things are looking good not only for the long future but also for what lies ahead this year with plenty of footy to be played.

Congrats again to Sammy Kruskas twos who were awesome in their seven goal destruction of the defending champs Mayne.

Really playing as a well-oiled unit at the moment. Keep it going boys!

Interleague bye this weekend then on to Maroochy at home Saturday week which will be a huge challenge for this youthful Noosa team. I’m sure they will be up for it.

Close racing ensures surf carnival success

The women are calling for donations of racing mals or surf skis that are no longer used and may be just lying around homes.

The passionate paddlers, who are all active members for the club, are excited to compete for their club as well as becoming better lifesavers in the process.

These busy women are willing to commit time and energy into training but need some community support to get started.

They are looking for donations of equipment and are seeking major sponsors for the season.

THEY came from as far away as Townsville, Arcadian and Mackay in the north and Point Lookout in the south; and they assemble on Noosa’s Main Beach for what was to be Noosa’s first major IRB carnival in several years.

To say it was a success would be an understatement, with 18 clubs and 250 competitors in attendance. And with good weather the stage was set for two days of top racing.

To ensure they reached Noosa on time, the Mackay team had their craft and trailer leave at 3am on Friday morning for the drive to Noosa and it was a tired but happy crew that arrived that afternoon. This re-enforced the support and determination of not only this crew, but all others involved.

While a number of clubs used removalists to transport their crafts, tents and other necessary gear.

“The response and support from the clubs has been great and clubs have travelled a long way to get here,” Stuart Hogben Sports Manager for Queensland Surf

Lifesaving said on Saturday morning.

“The weather is perfect… unfortunately there is no surf but there is a sand bank out there so it could make things interesting.

“Regarding the teams a lot of people flew in last night so their endeavor shows the future of IRB racing definitely looks good.”

For Noosa we were represented by a team of 18 members - male and female.

“We have teams competing in the opens, masters and female events… unfortunately we have no Under-23 mens but all else is covered,” said Noosa IRB Racing Captain Chris Vaughan.

Despite not competing Sunshine Beach club captain Scott Summers was in attendance as an observer.

“We are not competing today, but at present all indications are that next season we certainly will be,” he said.

Early last season on several occasions, Sunshine members attended training sessions at Noosa and this has been a major step forward.

For Noosa the men’s team made the final of the Open Male Tube Rescue Race, the final of the

girls’ Under-23s, and the semifinal in the Masters’ Mass Rescue.

Despite finishing out of the medals all crews performed well and considering this is a relative new team their overall performance has been very encouraging.

Racing over the two days was very close and just before midday Saturday, lack of water on the sand bank caused three lanes on the eastern end of the bank to be closed and heat contestants were changed accordingly. With 89 races Saturday and 42 Sunday it was a full program.

At the completion of the weekend, the overall winning club was North Burleigh on 84 points with Point Lookout and Kawana tying for second place on 61 points each.

“When you consider that a short time ago we just had three or four clubs interested in our sport and here this weekend we have 18, the growth has been outstanding,” Hogben said summarising the carnival.

“In fact we now have the biggest growth factor in all surf sports.”

It is now becoming apparent that good IRB crews are fast becoming one of the most important factors in surf club structure. All

summer they patrol our beaches and in many cases are called on to work in isolated areas in big surf where back-up teams are often kilometres away.

Then in winter they compete at different beaches all along the coast, thus improving their skills and adding to their experience. So in summer its beach patrols; winter its competition and advanced training. Essential requirement for team membership; complete dedication.

Another major performance came from Noosa’s carnival support team.

Often overlooked, without a good team doing all the background work, such as looking after officials, catering and serving the public, a state of turmoil would appear. At the close of the carnival a state official approached the Noosa club to congratulate the work force.

When surf lifesaving runs events such as this, it is always good for the Noosa community.

When 250 competitors plus club officials, families, judges and support groups hit town it’s good for business.

So for both lifesaving and local business a carnival such as this is definitely a win win situation.

Mountains of help sport

By JOLENE OGLE LOCAL university student Tony Jennings is combining his love of endurance challenges with helping sick kids and he’s inviting Noosa locals to join him.

On Sunday 8 August, Tony will lead endurance competitors through a four or eight hour mountain trek challenge up Mt Cooroora, Pomona, and locals of any fitness level can take part.

Anyone who loves to trek through the mountain can sign up for the Mt Cooroora Endurance Challenge with individual spots available, or share the load and sign up as a pair or triple relay team.

Tony, who recently battled cancer, said the climb is designed to be achievable by most people, but can be “awesomely hard or even brutal” depending on how competitors approach the challenge.

“This will be a supportive community atmosphere with all participants competing in small circuit groups with lots encouragement, courtesy and interaction,” he said.

All monies raised from the climb will be donated to a range of children’s charities including Heart Kids, Children’s Hospital and Research Centre Foundation and the Humpty Dumpty Foundation.

For Tony, the climb is a metaphor for the daily struggle of kids suffering from chronic illness.

“If climbing up and down a piece of mountain track is tough, then think about what chronically ill children and their families go through on a day to day basis,” he said.

“They are constantly challenged with difficult mountains to climb.

“Their lives are a series of ups and downs.

“It’s brutal, yes, but to survive they need to fight and need the support that the charities I am raising money for can give.”

Milestone birthday in play Anglers on target offshore

By ANNETTE ADSETT THIS week Coolum Tennis Club congratulated Gloria Heathwood who has attained a milestone birthday while still being part of a competitive team at the club.

Gloria celebrated her birthday with a cake at the tennis club and lunch at the Coolum Hotel.

Her team is third going into the semi-finals next week.

Gloria is one of several octogenarians who have played competitive tennis at Coolum.

Laurie Bruhl, Peg Walker, Jane Webb, Wilma Johnson, Lloyd Lahey and Joy Abacair have all played competitive tennis after they were 80.

Laurie continued playing social tennis until he was 90.

Thanks go to the volunteers last Sunday who ensured the new building is ready for use with the completion of the fence.

Special thanks go to Doug, Adam, Tony, Leon, Henry, Des and John for the hard work replacing the fence posts.

Social tennis has been very popular recently, particularly on Tuesday mornings.

Most of the visiting players have returned home but members hope to see them again and welcome a new influx of winter visitors.

Thursday night is building numbers and to add to the atmosphere, Zac has installed a new speaker system to add music to the mix.

Members enjoyed the music on Sunday morning.

Thursday night is welcoming back some of the former mixed fixture players, adding to the quality of the play.

This week, the club welcomed back its coach Andrew Ash who has been in Turkey with an Australian Wheelchair team.

Members look forward to hearing reports of the success of the trip.

The new computer is finally up to date with most email addresses transferred over.

Thanks to Adam, Des, John and Annette for all doing their bit in transferring files so we are completely operational.

NOOSA has been the place to be and with the weather gods being kind over the last week, offshore was high on the priority list for anglers.

Snapper are the prime focus for most offshore anglers at this time of the year.

Reefs like North Reef, Barwon Bank, Chardon’s Reef, Sunshine Reef and Double Island are all prime hunting grounds and with the pelagics due to start making their way north, bottom bashing will be the go.

Over the weekend pearl perch, morwong, teraglin jewfish, moses perch, venus tusk fish, squire and cod came from North and Sunshine reefs, Double Island and the Barwon Banks will have big pearl perch, quality snapper, cobia and big reds all hitting the decks.

In the river it has also been gold, or rather golden trevally, these great table fish have been monstering baits around Woods Bay, the river mouth and around the Sound.

Daybreak has been prime time with surface lures working well while the fish are feeding on the surface, micro jigs have also claimed quite a number of fish, another great trevally species is the diamond trevally and there have been some stonkers in the river over the last couple of weeks.

With fish touching the 80cm mark, these are a formidable opponent and take quality gear to get them in the boat.

John Naughton caught this 17kg yellowfin tuna.

Nice sized flathead have been in good numbers with the area up near the Tewantin Ski Run really starting to produce some nice fish.

The river mouth and sand bags have also been prime hunting ground with quite an array of quality fish from both including, tailor, large bream school jew, large flatties and trevally.

Over at the frying pan good sized whiting and quality bream have been on the menu.

On the beaches, Northshore has been fishing well with the stretch from Teewah up to Double Island producing some good fish.

Tailor have started to move up the coast with some good sized schools coming in on the high tide again early morning has been the most productive with large pillies, and fresh mullet the baits of choice.
