There are 18 new plaques that have biographical details of each man who served.

THE Mount Evelyn History Group is seeking input from family members of World War I servicemen.

The history group is working closely with the Mount Evelyn RSL to find the family members of those servicemen who were once honoured on the avenue of honour on Wray Crescent.

The gum trees were planted between 1918 and 1919.

Delighted to take the lead

By PETER DOUGLAS WHEN it comes to promoting good health, one Olinda action group believes government representatives are barking up the right tree.

The Olinda Golf Course Community Action Group (OGCAG) says it’s delighted over the community consultation regarding the now-vacant Olinda Golf Course.

The 29-hectare land is presently being used as a dog-walking and recreation area, which has pleased the group considerably.

Presently, discussions are being held between the Victorian Government, Parks Victoria, Yarra Ranges Shire and the community in regards to its future use.

But action group co-ordinator Jenny Oxer said the participation rate proved the future of the land should be reserved for community use.

“It’s such a wonderful space for dog owners, where they can get away from the roads and enjoy the outdoors,” she said.

“It’s been great for those who want to connect with their community, and network and make new friends.

“There aren’t many other op-

portunities to do this in the nearby region,” she said.

Ms Oxer said the group formed not long after learning the space had become vacant.

She said many in the group wanted to ensure the community had a voice, when shaping the direction of the land.

“The land is absolutely gorgeous and has been described as a ‘breath of heaven’,” she said.

“We want it used for environmentally friendly recreational facilities.”

Ms Oxer said it wasn’t just pet owners who were benefiting from the space, with activities such as geocaching becoming extremely popular.

Going forward, she has even envisioned a redevelopment of the former golf course cafe, which she would like to see become a pet-friendly cafe.

OGCAG has about 50 people on its mailing list.

To date, Ms Oxer said the group had been delighted with the efforts of the government representatives they had worked with, in particular Member for Monbulk James Merlino.

Mountain trail of tension

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS A PROPOSED mountain bike trail along the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct has ignited old tensions between interest groups and Yarra Ranges Shire.

Mountain bike trail consultancy group, World Trail, has supplied the Yarra Ranges Mountain Bikers (YRMTB) and the Mount Evelyn Environment Protection and Progress Association (MEEPPA) with a proposal for a sustainable mountain biking track along the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct Walking Trail at the behest of the council.

The building of the trail has been a hotly contested issue between YRMTB and MEEPPA since the closure of unauthorised paths in the area in 2012.

The proposal comes after the groups decided to compromise over how to best utilise the area to meet the interests of both parties and outlines the specifics of the trail that will range 1800m through the aqueduct.

John Wright, vice-president of YRMTB, was pleased to see more progress in the development of the new trail.

“It looks interesting and World Trail has done a great job with the proposal. But we have a few reservations,” he said.

“About one third of the bike trail is on the walking track.

“That’s a disappointment but the [YRMTB] committee has to get together and discuss it further.”

Not all the stakeholders are happy with the

proposal, though. Tim Heenan, former Yarra Ranges mayor and head of MEEPPA, feels his organisation has been given a raw deal with the proposed trail.

“I am absolutely livid and disappointed that we have been given a final copy of the proposal without the shire taking the time to consult with MEEPPA and Friends of the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct (FoMEA),” he said.

Mr Heenan said he worked hard while in council to see mountain bike trails established in the Yarra Ranges.

“We are not against the mountain bikers having a trail in the aqueduct area," he said.

“We are against not allowing the community groups to have an input into the proposal.”

Mr Heenan noted no draft copies of the pro-

posal had been supplied to MEEPPA or FoMEA for consideration nor had they been consulted on what was to go into the proposal, despite part of the compromise being there would be more meetings and consultations.

“What we have is an opinion by World Trail but not the people who have looked after the trail for 30 years,” he said.

“In the letter of the law when the motion was handed down, there was supposed to be meetings between the groups but they never happened.”

Further meetings are scheduled in the coming months between MEEPPA, YRMTB and council to discuss the proposal.

The Mail contacted the Yarra Ranges Council for comment, but did not receive a response by deadline.

Society say on developments

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS THE State Government has introduced changes to the way Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) assesses the social impacts a future development may have on a community.

The Recognising Objectors Bill 2015 introduces a new decision-making consideration into the Planning and Environment Act 1987 that requires VCAT to recognise the number of objections and grounds for concern to be

considered along with a development’s planning merits.

The new bill will not mean that community objections will outweigh planning merits, but instead the objections will be given more consideration then previously.

Currently VCAT is not able to take into account the extent of community opposition to a planned development.

During the election, then Shadow Planning Minister Brian Tee and Labor

Member for Monbulk James Merlino met with locals at Tecoma to announce the plans.

Garry Muratore of the No McDonald’s in the Dandenong Ranges campaign was glad to see the government follow through on this election promise. “Basically, it legitimises all the work we’ve done,” he said. “We’re right on this. While it’s too late for Tecoma, we didn’t want to see it happen to other communities, so we lobbied to make sure this kind of planning

disaster didn’t happen to other communities in Victoria.”

“They’ve given communities back their voice,” he said.

My Muratore said if these changes were in place during the Tecoma McDonald’s appeal, it would have definitely changed the outcome.

“VCAT commissioners would have had to take on board the massive public opinion involved in this protest. 92 per cent of people in Tecoma were against

it. They would have had to have rules for us,” he said.

In a written statement, current Minister for Planning Richard Wynne said the changes to VCAT processes would achieve better outcomes for communities.

“Planning decisions will always be better when the voice of the community is heard. It improves the decisionmaking process and leads to better outcomes,” he said.

$1million reward UPWEY Tecoma Community Recreation and Sporting Hub (UTCRASH) recently showed its fighting spirit at the Upwey Tecoma Football Netball Club’s home turf, which has earned them just reward.

Yarra Ranges Shire has acknowledged the group’s ability to rally behind their cause, last week committing $1 million for a sports pavilion at the Thompson Reserve in Upwey.

UTCRASH committee member Andrew Peterson said the club and community would soon enjoy firstclass facilities, rather than put up with sub-standard infrastructure.

The reserve plays host to many local sporting teams including football, netball and cricket.

The protest was about CommBank negotiations to help fund the controversial Galilee Basin coal mine and the Abbot Point port redevelopment.

Pedalling powers a tourism gold mine THERE’S a popular saying that ‘if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is’.

On the other hand, there’s the equally popular statement, ‘Eureka!’

It will be interesting to observe how the development of the proposed Warburton Mountain Bike Hub plays out in the coming years, as it potentially powers towards becoming one of the biggest generators of tourism dollars in the region.

On paper, it’s difficult not to get excited about the benefits that such a program could bring.

There are two statistics released in the feasibility study that would have many in the region, evidently including Yarra Ranges councillors, champing at the bit.

Firstly, 175 new jobs for Warburton.

Secondly, an estimated $23 million in tourism income annually, generated from just a $4 million outlay.

No matter who you ask, that is a fair return on investment.

In fact, one can’t help but feel if there is an opportunity this good, there must be a big price to pay.

Alas, it’s almost impossible to poke any holes in the logic.

The region has something the mountain-biking fraternity wants badly, worldclass terrain that is easily accessible.

As an activity, mountain-biking is a fantastic form of exercise and most enthusiasts seem to have great respect for the environment.

But the region would need to cater for thousands of mountain-bikers descending en masse annually. Doubtlessly, that would change the tourism landscape.

That is a lot of mouths to feed, a lot of vacancies filled, a lot of special events and competitions, not to mention the broken bones and equipment.

To date, Yarra Ranges council seems to have proceeded with the necessary caution and thought that should come with such an important decision.

The funds have been allocated ‘in principle’, as well as conducting an eightweek feasibility study, which shows they are not banking their winnings just yet.

All seems ready for a downhill ride, let’s just hope it doesn’t turn out to be fool’s gold.

The trial program has been introduced in response to community feedback.

Residents can register to participate in the program and book a mini-myna magnet trap during the trial period.

A $100 deposit is payable upon collection of the trap.

Borrowers must sign an agreement to confirm that any birds trapped are captured and euthanised according to humane, RSPCA-endorsed methods.

The trial will run until July next year and, following a review, may become a permanent program.

Indian mynas are an introduced species, and one of the most invasive and aggressive animal species in the world.

They force native birds and small mammals out of their nests and tree hollows, and prey on baby native birds.

By using sticks and rubbish to build nests inside roofs, Indian mynas also create fire hazards.

They scavenge in open bins and spread rubbish, causing public health risks.

Droppings and mites from their nests also contribute to the spread of disease.

Brigade’s call to come along THE Belgrave Fire Brigade is hosting its annual art show on the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend.

This is the 32nd year the Belgrave CFA has hosted the show that displays and sells work from artists from around the state.

The funds raised from this event will go towards the pending purchase of a new tanker for the brigade.

The show commences on Friday night with a cham-

pagne opening and continues throughout the weekend.

The show has gained an excellent reputation and attracts patrons from areas such as the Peninsula, Melbourne suburbs and, of course, the local community.

Kirstin Cross from the brigade hoped the community would support the event.

“It’s been well supported in the past and continues to get better,“ she said.

“This event is so important for the brigade and we encouraged everyone to get behind us.“ The art show is also supported by businesses in Belgrave and Tecoma which take out advertising in the show’s catalogue.

The art show will open on Friday 5 June from 7.30pm and run through Saturday, Sunday and Monday from 10am to 4pm each day.

By JESSE GRAHAM MUSICIANS from the Yarra Ranges are being called upon to take the stage over the next two months, as the annual FReeZA/Push Start Battle of the Bands comes around again.

The battle, which is open to bands of all ages and genres in the Yarra Ranges, will begin with a heat on Friday 19 June at the Montrose Town Centre.

The Montrose heat is followed by another at Healesville’s Memo Hall on 31 July, with the finalists from both heats battling for the top spot in a show at Mooroolbark Community Centre on 21 August.

Entrants will have the chance to perform live, receive feedback from music industry professionals, meet other musicians and industry representatives and the finalists will have their music recorded for a compilation CD. Last year’s CD, Battle Stars Vol. 2, featured local bands such as Valerie Avenue, Waiting for Pat, Balter Vada, Calloused Fingertips and The Bean Project, who won last year’s competition.

The Battle of the Bands is also organised by Yarra Ranges Youth Services through the Yarra Ranges Council.

The Battle of the Bands finalists have their music recorded onto a CD, such as last year's Battle Stars Vol. 2.

Royal rumble’s a hit A Royal Night Out Rated M for mature themes Starring Sarah Gadon, Bel Powley, Jack Reynor A ROYAL Night Out is a silly historical comedy with surprising depth.

Loosely based on real events, A Royal Night Out follows British princesses Elizabeth and Margaret as they celebrate VE Day (the end of WWII in Europe) incognito among the people of London.

Full of amusing hijinks, A Royal Night Out is a fun comedy of errors (as Elizabeth rumbles across the city to reunite with her sister), but also contains a dash of danger and a satisfying level of maturity and intelligence.

The film sagely balances British pride and revelry with uncertainty for the future and the

lasting trauma of war, as Elizabeth befriends an airman contemplating desertion after the loss of a friend.

The casting is excellent; Sarah Gadon (who looks exactly like a young Queen Elizabeth) has an appropriately regal, dignified screen presence, but Bel Powley is a delightful bundle of energy as Margaret.

A Royal Night Out does an effective job of making the royals relatable. The film acknowledges how cloistered the princesses feel, and frames their night out as a rare chance for Elizabeth to experience the people she will soon rule. It also gives Margaret a time to shine as the “lesser” royal; Elizabeth is the protagonist, but Margaret has the most fun.

Point is, even a staunch Republican like me can find this movie thoroughly enjoyable.

Winter MARKETS Historic setting for Mountain market A Mail News Advertising Feature

MARKET on the Mountain conducts monthly markets from March through to December, with the focus on handmade and homemade small businesses.

The market is held in the Olinda Hall, which has ample off-street parking and modern amenities in a historic setting.

Generally, the markets are on the last Sunday of the month, except December.

The dates for the remainder of this year are as follows: Sunday 28 June, Sunday 26 July, Sunday 30 August, Sunday 27 September, Sunday 25 Octo-

ber, Sunday 22 November, Sunday 13 December.

The market runs from 10am to 2pm.

Market on the Mountain hosts numerous stallholders, who offer quality and unique handmade products.

The products on offer from the stallholders vary from month to month.

They include handmade toys, fashion accessories, adults and children’s clothing, millinery, home accessories and decor items, just to name a few.

Market co-ordinator Lesley Paxinos has been doing markets for a few years with her business, Inglenook Emporium.

“We realised there was a need for a quality indoor event on Mount Dandenong,” she said.

“We found the perfect venue and Market on the Mountain was born.”

Planning started in early 2014, with the first market held on 31 August, 2014.

There have been monthly markets for 10 months.

Lesley has been living in the area for more than 15 years and knows what locals and tourists alike want from markets in the area.

She has just opened her own store in the Olinda township.

The winter markets will be 10am to 2pm, at the Olinda Hall, on Sunday 28 June, 26 July (Christmas in July market) and 30 August.

Small business tax waiver THE Federal Government’s new budget measures for small businesses will allow for upgrading equipment and technology, waiving off tax instantly for assets up to $20,000.

The budget, released last month, outlines a number of measures to support small businesses, with one of the major highlights being an instant tax deduction on the whole cost of new assets up to $20,000.

Any of these assets - a lawnmower, industrial oven, coffee machine, printer, computers or tools - can be deducted from tax, as long as the business has an annual turnover of less than $2 million.

Accompanying this measure was a drop to small business taxes by 1.5 per cent, and unincorporated small businesses are to receive a 5 per cent tax discount - up to $1000 - each year.

Casey MP Tony Smith praised the measures as helping small businesses in the area to invest in new technology and new staff.

“The new $5.5 billion Growing Jobs and Small Business package will help local small businesses in the outer-east and Yarra Valley to invest more, grow their enterprises and employ more locals,” he said.

Mr Smith said the tax deduction was a “substantial increase” from the previous $1000 threshold, and that the $20,000 tax deduction could be applied to every new asset purchased, rather than accumulatively.

Treasurer Joe Hockey also said the budget features provisions for farmers who will be able to make immediate tax deductions on new fencing.

With a number of new measures giving a leg-up to smaller operators, it’s a great time for business owners in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges to use this leg-up to invest, expand and grow.

The Federal Government’s small business tax break runs for the three years.

LAST Saturday at Emerald Golf Club, members faced the daunting task of playing a round where some holes were co-joined.

This made it difficult because players had to negotiate hills, trees, creeks, bunkers and the occasional wombat to reach the next destination flags.

Despite having 14 on a pair of co-joined holes, president Ken Sumsion (25), still managed to come in with a nett 61 to win the ‘Language and Leaves’ carved trophy.

He must have steadied the ship because it was certainly listing to port early on.

(OFG) last Wednesday, it was decreed the game was Bisque par for the day, which did not quite get the standing ovation hoped for.

Ben Balfour(18), back for the day, drew with Sepp Krummenacher (22) when they both carded +5.

A grizzle of golfers including Ken Sumsion, Peter Clowes and Bobby Kennedy all managed +4 to be second and not first.

The final of the 4BBB match play was held with Broc Reynolds and Peter Clowes getting over the line after 21 holes from David Aitken and Mark Starick to win that coveted trophy.

Vixen passes on top nutrition tips MELBOURNE Vixens recruit Emily Mannix brought fruit smoothies, muesli and fitness to the Knox City Council Netball Association last week.

To celebrate the launch of the 2015 Netball Victoria Association Championships, Mannix dropped in to encourage the sport’s budding stars, who included Georgia Donnelly and Jemma Goldsack

from the Ferntree Gully Netball Club.

Mannix, who now competes against some of the best netballers in the world, spoke of the importance of nutrition for elite athletes.

“There’s more to netball than meets the eye,” she said.

“A netball player is a valuable member of any team, whether that be on the court

during a game or off the court at school.

“Playing netball is a great way to push yourself and shoot goals while having fun and staying healthy.”

Mannix and the young rising netball stars showcased their top 10 health tips, with fruit smoothies, apples, muesli, weights and other health/ fitness items helping to set the scene.

Mixed bag for Monbulk juniors

By JAMIE STRUDLEY CROYDON Little Athletics was welcomed at the Yarra Ranges Athletics’ Saturday morning cross-country event at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn.

The visit produced some big fields and some great racing, particularly in the shorter events.

It is always fun to combine these cross-country events with neighbouring athletics clubs.

The club looks forward to the next time they can compete with the Croydon team.

A REAL mixture for the six footy sides from Monbulk in round eight, playing at Seville on a wintry day.

The under-9s played against a strong Woori Yallock side and had a great battle. Woori showed great skills and were a real tough competition.

The under-10s were up against Seville, and really showed the benefit of great training, improvement and strong team play.

The coaches at Monbulk under-10s are thrilled with the teams’ progress, and are seeing the benefit of the kids’ effort at training and great listening.

The under-11s side faced the top-of-the table Mount Evelyn. Having beaten them once before this season, the team went in confidently. However, Mount Evelyn proved too strong, giving Monbulk a lesson in starting quickly and sticking to team plans.

What a game the under12s against Seville proved to be.

Seville really started

well and took a good lead into the half-time break.

The Monbulk coaching brains-trust revved up the players and they came home in the second half hard, but couldn’t get over the line.

Seville was too strong and won by one point.

The under-14s were up against Seville on a wet and windy day and really played well.

Forty scoring shots to nil summed up the dominance of the team, and it was a great confidence builder after some tough games recently.

Hayden Finlay was in great form with five goals and his aerial skills and long kicking a highlight.

The under-16s finished the day against Seville and dominated from the start.

Coach Hughson moved his players around and the side finished with a dominant 123-point win, with eight different goal kickers.

Travis Wills continued his red-hot form and his running ability was on display to feed the forwards.

Gutsy second-half rally

Healesville really should have been further ahead at the half but wasted its chances, booting 7.10 to 6.2, which kept Belgrave within striking distance.

Belgrave really started to get on top in the third, with some hard running, and booted 4 goals to 1 to go into the last break with an 8-point advantage.

The last quarter saw Belgrave stretch its lead as it finished the day booting 4 goals to 2 to run over Healesville in the second half and come away with a great victory.

Warby looked terrific in the first half as their long kicking running game was paying dividends and they went to the main break with a 27-point lead.

Mount Evelyn played a much more accountable game in the third and they were able to peg the margin back to just 16 points at the last change after a 5 goals to 3 term.

The last quarter was a cracker as Mount Evelyn kept coming.

They did manage to score five goals and finish well, but Warby was able to slot three majors, which was enough to keep their noses in front, come final siren Warby breathed one big sigh of relief as they recorded a much-needed victory.

Wandin led by 24 points at the half but wasn’t playing their normal fast-paced style.

However, that all changed in the third as they got their run up and going, booting seven goals.

Monbulk wasn’t playing bad as they did slot four majors, but Wandin’s lead had blown out to 43 points at three-quarter time.

The last quarter was a bit of a goal feast, and Monbulk did finish the day strong, outscoring Wandin 7 goals to 5, but this game was always in Wandin’s keeping, despite Monbulk’s best efforts.

Unfortunately, that was the only two goals for Alexandra for the day as Kinglake dominated the remainder of the game.

Kinglake went on its merry way after quarter time, booting six goals in the second term, then followed that up with five goals in the third and fourth quarters to come away with a 106-point victory to continue on their winning way.

Powelltown led by just five points at quarter time, but with a little more steadiness could have been further in front as they did have five more scoring shots.

Powelltown’s lead only increased to one goal at the half as both sides slotted two goals for the term.

The third term was still a goal-for-goal affair, but it was Seville who just got the edge, booting 3 goals to 2 and they held a 4-point lead at threequarter time.

The last term was a nail-biting affair.

Powelltown did have more opportunities as

they booted 5.5 for the term, while Seville managed 4.4.

But it wasn’t enough, as Powelltown held on to win by four points in an absolute thriller.

Yarra Junction did all they could in the last to bring themselves back into the game and they did boot seven goals, but Gembrook was able to score three majors which saw them win by 11 points, thanks to their third-quarter effort.
