2015 Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards

ROAD TO SUCCESS

By CASEY NEILL “TEN years ago we were a medium-sized manufacturing business that was just in Dandenong.”

Today TriMas Corporation in Keysborough is Australia’s largest towing system manufacturer and has spread to nine countries.

Managing director Carl Bizon has led the way and was last week honoured for his efforts with inclusion on the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Honour Roll.

“I was very surprised, to be honest with you,” he said.

“I don’t think any of us go to work every day thinking what we do is particularly special.

“In the seven years that I’ve been here we’ve tripled the size of the company. It’s been a pretty good ride.

“But I can only do it because we’ve got some really good staff.

"My job is to provide environments where people are successful. That’s all I do.”

Other Honour Roll inductees from the region include Tom Hartley from Hilton Manufacturing, bus giant Ken Grenda and Gerry Ryan from Jayco - who presented the award.

“That meant a lot to me,” Mr Bizon said.

“To be put in the same category as those icons of manufacturing was quite humbling.“ TriMas started in Dandenong 65 years ago when Eric Hayman couldn’t find the towbar he wanted, designed his own and started selling them as Hayman Reese.

Mr Bizon said towing equipment remained the company’s biggest product line but it had added roof racks, side steps and caravan trailer components.

It adopted the name of parent company TriMas about 15 years ago to reflect its diversification and three years ago brought sites in Dandenong and Lyndhurst together in Pacific Drive, Keysborough.

“I’m only the third managing director in the entire company’s history, so it’s a pretty long legacy I’ve got to preserve,” Mr Bizon said.

“I started in the steel industry in Newcastle in 1980.

“Through various manufacturing jobs in the steel industry and associated industrial products and industrial markets I’ve ended up here.

“My background has always been in manufacturing in some way, shape or form, and I don’t seem to fall too far from steel.”

Mr Bizon has his sights on further international growth but will continue to expand employment in Australia.

He supports the region through business mentoring with South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) and South East Business Networks (SEBN).

“I think people underestimate just the level of entrepreneurialism and innovation that’s around the Dandenong area,“ he said.

TriMas was a finalist for last year’s Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Large Manufacturer of the Year award after it was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008.

2015 Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame Awards

THE Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame awards were established in 2001 to celebrate excellence in the sector.

Industry Minister Lily D’Ambrosio recognised 16 outstanding individuals and businesses in front of more than 800 people at dinner at the Crown Palladium Ballroom on Tuesday, 26 May, which coincided with National Manufacturing Week.

The theme for this year’s gala was Advancing Manufacturing and Ms D’Ambrosio said the awards acknowledged the innovation and export focus needed to make the sector competitive.

“These companies and individuals are leaders in their field both locally and internationally and represent the depth, breadth and capability of our manufacturing industry,” she said.

The night included an induction in to the Hall of Fame’s Honour Roll, company inductions into the Hall of Fame and the Young, Small, Medium and Large Manufacturer of the Year titles.

Six new categories were presented this year – Medical Technology and Pharmaceuticals, New Energy Technology, Food and Fibre Processing, Transport, Defence and Construction Technology, International Education and Professional Services.

At age 26, Robbie O’Brien founded Dandenong’s FlexiCut Engineering with Randy De Rozario in 2006.

Mr O’Brien was finalist for the Young Manufacturer of the Year title last year as well.

He was named the Australian Manufacturing Technology Institute Limited (AMTIL) 2008 Advanced Manufacturing Young Ambassador of the Year, and FlexiCut was a nominee for the 2013 Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards.

computer numerical control (CNC) machine. After his apprenticeship he worked with leading CNC machine sales organisation John Hart for two years before borrowing $30,000, buying a second-hand machine and leasing a small factory.

FAMILY-OWNED Berwick business Australian Precision Technologies (APT) was named Victoria’s Small Manufacturer of the Year.

“It’s recognition for all our hard work and commitment in a challenging manufacturing industry,” co-director Ron Weinzierl said.

“With government and industry support we’ll be able to develop into a world class manufacturer.”

Ron said the gala event was a valuable networking opportunity.

“I had a gentleman come up to me and say he had some work that he wanted us to look at it straight away,” he said.

“It’s about working collectively and using innovation to secure manufacturing in Australia.”

He said a record 800 guests attended, up from 600 the previous year.

“We need to get together as a group and support manufacturing,” he said.

APT was last year inducted into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame and also picked up the Manufacturing Award at the inaugural Casey Cardinia Business Awards.

Ron said the company had become a world-standard manufacturer since his brother and co-director Richard founded it in 1992.

Ron came on board in 1998 and said APT was now leading the market on national and global fronts with clients in aerospace, defence, automotive, biomedical, telecommunications and more.

It followed on from the tech company’s nomination in March for the Manufacturing, Small Business and Premier Regional Business awards at the Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards.

ATTAR is earning an international name for innovation while making a healthy investment in its workforce.

It has developed a world-first method to stress test heavy train wheels and found a novel way of keeping the stress levels of its 20 employees in check.

ATTAR started out in Clayton in 1990, moved to Springvale in 1996 and set up in purpose-built offices and training facilities in Keysborough in 2001.

The most recent move followed requests from workers for more office windows.

Among the things ATTAR tests is tanks for corrosion, welded joins for integrity and floors for slip.

WASTECH’S inclusion as a finalist for the Medium Manufacturer of the Year title followed a string of recent awards for the Hallam business. It won the Manufacturing Award at March’s Greater Dandenong Chamber of Commerce Premier Regional Business Awards and took home the Casey Business of the Year and Casey Manufacturer of the Year awards for 2013.

In May last year it won the Melbourne South East (MSE) Business Awards Business of the Year Overall Business Excellence award and Medium Enterprise category.

“Manufacturing is a high-pressure industry and it is terrific to have our growth and success in this industry recognised,” managing director Neil Bone said.

“We like to think the judges have recognised the effort we have put into our team approach within the business and the support and opportunity for growth that we offer all our employees.”

Wastech has supported its entire workforce in studies ranging from certificates to masters of business administration.

“We have a solid business vision and values system that has been communicated to all our team and is on display in our foyer for all our partners to see and be involved in,” he said.

The business has grown from a three-man band to an industry leader with more than 90 staff and a turnover pushing $30 million.

Wastech’s customers range from large national retail stores and shopping centre developments to small supermarkets and suburban retailers. It works closely with consulting engineers, architects, developers and company management to provide site-specific and specialised waste management solutions.

Wastech equipment includes front lift trucks, static compactors, bin lifters and bins. Mr Bone said the broad product range and the level of innovation Wastech applied made it a leader in its field within Australia.

“Innovation and outstanding customer service keeps us ahead of our competitors and high quality product ensures we stay there,” he said.

DANDENONG’S Corex Plastics Australia was a finalist for the Large Manufacturer of the Year.

It was established in 1985 and is now the country’s largest manufacturer of hollow profile and solid polypropylene and HDPE sheet products, and the number one manufacturer of twin wall profile fluteboard sheet.

Corex struggled in recent years under the weight of a rising Australian dollar, increasing oil prices, and the Carbon Tax “which our overseas competitors didn’t have”.

“All those things together - I would not have dreamt of that in any business scenario,” managing director Simon Whiteley said.

“It allowed us to focus on what was important - what do our customers value.”

And thinking green was high on the list.

Corex recycles up to 20 tonnes of plastic each day, and its new products have about 50

per cent recycled content.

Mr Whiteley said recycling technology improvements that started eight years ago had cut energy use by 80 per cent and reduced the product’s carbon footprint.

“Plastics tend to get a bad rap - that they’re bad for the environment, and everyone thinks of shopping bags,” he said.

“It’s more recyclable than cardboard.

“The reality for us is that we want to recycle the material and put it back, ideally, into the application it came from or, if not, something similar.

“We want to know where it ends up. We want to divert stuff away from landfill and back into the plant.

“At any one time the incoming goods equals what goes out in terms of truck movements per day.

“We even recycle our competitor’s products. No one’s fully integrated like we are.”

WHEELS STILL TURNING AS TRUCK BUILDER LOOKS FORWARD IVECO Trucks Australia has been in Dandenong since 1952 when International Harvester, as it was then known, developed a truck manufacturing facility.

Last week it was a finalist for the Large Manufacturer of the Year award.

“I hope the facility will remain in Dandenong another 60 years at least,” spokesman Ron Grasso said.

Mr Grasso said Iveco was a high valueadd, agile manufacturer, supplying customised solutions to the transport sector.

Iveco became part of the Fiat group in 1992 and is now the commercial and specialty vehicle brand of industrial goods multi-national CNH Industrial following a Fiat-Case New Holland merger.

Mr Grasso said the deal created new opportunities for the group in Australia, particularly in research and development.

ENGAGED IN EDUCATION CHISHOLM Institute capped off a year filled with success as one of six finalists for the International Education Award.

In November the Dandenong TAFE was named Australia’s Large Training Provider of the Year at the Australian Training Awards.

It was among three finalists following its successful win in the category at the Victorian Training Awards in September.

Chisholm CEO Maria Peters said the award recognised a commitment to engaging with the community and industry and forging enduring partnerships in the south east and beyond.

She said the VET sector was a sector within education that was not well understood but had a significant impact on the economy and society.

“Quality vocational education and training... develops practical skills, technical knowledge and offers important pathways to careers needed for the ongoing

A chance chat in a Berwick chicken shop led Ms Peters into TAFE. She was a secondary school English teacher on maternity leave when the encounter occurred in 1989.

The woman knew Ms Peters’s husband as a good teacher, assumed she would be too and offered her a job.

She initially planned to learn from TAFE and then return to high school.

“It’s in my blood now,” she said.

Ms Peters became the Chisholm

CEO in April 2010. The TAFE sector was turned on its head just four weeks later.

“We lost $30 million out of a $140 million business in six months,” she said.

“We’ve been to Hell and back the past four years.

“If I’d had a crystal ball I might have reconsidered.”

She made the decision to cut 230-plus jobs from 1400, deciding one fell swoop was preferable to “thousands of little cuts”.

“I knew I wanted Chisholm to be there in years to come.”

Ongoing funding battles have made it hard to plan for the future but Ms Peters learnt to seek advice and support while staying true to her vision.

She also reminds herself that she’s only a custodian – one hoping to leave the place in better shape than when she arrived.

Chisholm offers 400 nationally recognised courses.

ACCOUNTANTS’ HEART OF CAPITAL ADVICE PITCHER Partners was a finalist for the Professional Services Award.

The accounting and advisory firm opened its second Melbourne office in Dandenong South in May 2013.

Managing partner John Brazzale said the area was home to Australia’s largest and most dynamic manufacturing hub.

and hosts world-class tourist destinations, major retail, commerce and educational centres and has rich agricultural land and a burgeoning residential sector,” he said.

“Dandenong is set to become the thriving capital and multicultural heart, so an office in the region is an ideal location.”

Pitcher Partners Melbourne has become the fifth largest Melbourne-based accounting firm since it opened in 1991, with 42 partners and more than 600 professional and support staff across two locations.

PANELS ON BOARD FOR AWARDS TIMBERWOOD Panels and KH Equipment were among the finalists for a Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame company induction.

Timberwood’s sales and distribution centre is in Keysborough.

It has a comprehensive selection of timber veneers, veneered and coloured boards, plywood, particleboard and MDF and specialises in smaller and more complex jobs.

Timberwood opened in 2008 and boasts the most modern trimming and sanding line in Australia.

KH Equipment in Hallam is a private family business that has delivered innovative engineering solutions to industry since 1987.

It officially opened a new $800,000 high-tech plant in May last year and uses the latest Okuma CNC machines and equipment, tooling and software.

KH Equipment is recognised worldwide in exploration, mining, oil and gas industries and transport, particularly the Austart Air Starter Motors.

The company has established sales and warehouse facilities in United Kingdom, USA and China and customers include BHP, Rio Tinto, Westfarmers, Shell, Chevron, BP, Caterpillar and Kenworth.

Print does the job on employment Newspapers remain a popular medium for job hunters searching for their next role despite the wide choice of domestic and international alternatives online.

complete new benchtop or onto existing benchtops. NaturaStone environmental programs ensured a long product life cycle, Phillip said, and reduced quartz consumption by more than 65 per cent.

He said the company had export opportunities and would create continual job growth.

“NaturaStone’s fortitude and innovation is determined to contribute to keeping alive the identity and the viability of Australian manufacturing,” Phillip said.

Bellevue has supplied fresh apples and pears to markets and grocers since the 1950s.

It was Nick’s grandfather Angelo Russo and his brothers who first bought Bellevue Orchard into the family.

Nick’s father Robert and

Bernadette’s father Joe purchased it in 1977 so it’s the third generation of the family now at the helm.

A hailstorm that ripped through the orchard right before harvest in 1998 inspired the family to install an apple juicing plant to retrieve some value from the damaged fruit and the Summer Snow brand was born.

The Russos crush, juice, filter and bottle local fruit in various blends and without additives.

Bernadette said the family was proud of its products and now brewed tea and cider as well.

“I think our customers appreciate what we do because we will do whatever they want in the way of processing,” she said.

“The customers like the fact that we are willing to find a way of helping them get their products in the bottle and out into the market.”

Yaser Zomorodi, who arrived by boat two years ago, learnt the motto from renowned Kung Fu Sanda coach Freidon Maliki in his Iranian homeland.

“If you want to be successful in your life and in your fighting, you have to be relaxed. Your mind is clear,” Yaser said.

Yaser, 33, shuffles his limber, buffed shoulders several times into a fighting pose at Dandenong-based Lifestyle Martial Arts club.

“You have to be like this,” he says.

In echoes of the case of aspiring Test cricketer and former asylum seeker Fawad Ahmed, Yaser is seeking to win citizenship and gold for Australia.

There is little doubt he has the talent and grunt to represent Australia at the upcoming Kung Fu Wushu World Games in Indonesia.

Last month he comfortably swept, wrestled and kicked his way to a national Wushu Sanda title, dumping an Australian champion onto the mat time after time.

Yaser has also beaten all rivals in Sanda-mad Iran to be crowned fivetimes national champion.

To him, the potentially treacherous five-day boat trip from Indonesia to Christmas Island in 2013 was not much of a worry.

Even three anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions have barely slowed him down.

His Kryptonite is his non-citizen status – which causes him to be ineligible for the Australian national team.

Yaser is one of 30,000 asylum seekers on a bridging visa in Australia.

Police are investigating the series of drive-offs which occurred last month in Mooroolbark, Ringwood and Chirnside Park involving a black 2014 Holden Commodore which is believed to have been stolen from Amberley Crescent on 9 or 10 April.

Detectives have released an image of a man they believe may be able to assist with their investigation.

He is Caucasian, aged in his 40s with a stocky build and has curly blonde hair.

SPRINGVALE residents are speaking out in a desperate bid to save scarce open space.

Save Glendale Reserve spokesman Mark Dalton said he was receiving increasing support for the campaign against a City of Greater Dandenong proposal to sell part of the parkland.

Councillors in January released for public consultation the plan to sell 75a Whitworth Avenue to Minaret College for $1.15 million to build a new kindergarten.

The school leases a dilapidated kinder on the land but plans to end its tenure this year and leave the building vacant.

Mr Dalton wants the council to keep the land and demolish the kinder to create more open space.

“Springvale has only a third of the amount of open space of other parts of Greater Dandenong,” he said.

“This park is popular with local families we need to preserve the public land around it for future generations.”

Mr Dalton said it was important for residents to have their say on the proposed sale and urged them to send a submission to the council before 5pm on Monday 8 June.

Gypsies arrive with tales of cut-throat terror THE crowning fear of our early childhood at 88 McCrae Street was the stories the big kids told us about thieving gypsies.

Those stories frightened us the most, for there was nothing mythical about gypsies.

We had actually experienced close encounters with wandering bands of gypsies, their wagons and sometimes their savage mongrel dogs.

They often passed our place in McCrae Street on their way to their favourite camping spot for their covered wagons just across the old wooden bridge on the banks of the creek.

To hear “the gypsies are coming“ was the cry that put the most fear into our active young minds.

And it was even more alarming if you were away from the safety of home or the protection of adults.

The cry would come via the bush telegraph the minute the first wagon passed the Gladstone Road intersection and, sometimes, as late as when the first wagon had come over the top of the Melbourne Road hill up near the Scout Hall.

They travelled down the thin strip of roadway that is now the six lane Princes Highway to the foot of the hill where Lonsdale Street began.

If they were going to make camp by the McCrae Street Bridge they

would angle their wagons into the wide gravelled area that linked McCrae, Cleeland and Clow streets and head up along McCrae Street towards the bridge.

If they were intending to camp by the creek in the area of bush that ran from the drill hall to the original swing bridge, opposite the intersection of Frankston Road, or if they were just passing through, they would head down the single track of Lonsdale Street.

We heard dozens of frightening stories about these probably innocent bands of nomadic people, or basket makers, or tinkers, or just plain wanderers.

The more we listened to the scaremongers the gorier their tales became.

Many of the gypsy women wore clothing and scarves that to a fiveyear-old kid did look unusual. Thus

we believed that they were witches and fortune tellers.

We were told they were workers of black magic and makers of potions, which they brewed from chooks’ heads and rabbits’ guts in the cast-iron boilers they hung over their camp fires.

Most men carried a wicked looking hunting knife in a sheath on their belt. Some of them looked like small swords.

We knew that if they caught us near their wagon they would slit our throats.

Some of the wagons had steel barred boxes on their side or underneath, probably for their dogs or chooks.

We were told these cages were where we would be locked up if they caught us near their camp and, once imprisoned therein, we would become slaves until we were put on a pirate ship to be sold overseas at a slave mar-

ket. If you escaped from their clutches before they got you into one of the cages they were capable of sending a spell after you which would bring all sorts of plague and pestilence on your family and your frail little body and not even Nipper (Jack’s brother) was prepared to dismiss this with his usual “ah, bullsxxt!”.

So scared were we that if we suddenly came upon one of their camps we would bolt in terror like startled rabbits.

One of the most worrying tales we were told was about thieving gypsies who would steal everything that was not nailed down, as in those times our houses were never locked, day or night.

They would steal your chooks, the clothes off your clothes line, your veggies and any eggs still in your chook shed. They were especially interested in well-sharpened axes like dad’s was.

He was afraid that many lives have been sacrificed.

The troops have been ’cooped up’ in Egypt so long, that when they got a touch with the enemy they became somewhat reckless, which was, however to their credit.

It was hard indeed for Mr Couve to have lost both his sons and he would also move a letter of condolence be sent from the council.

Every councillor present spoke in support of the motion.

The President directed the Secretary to forward letters of condolence to the relatives of those who had been killed in action and intimated that notice of motion would be given in regard to obtaining a Roll of Honor.

Crash driver dozes

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A DRUG-DRIVER was found barely conscious behind the wheel after being involved in a bingle on South Gippsland Highway, Cranbourne.

Matthew Ross, 24, of Noble Park, had told police at the time he had had a “big win at the pokies” the night before, but couldn’t remember how drugs were in his system, why his girlfriend wasn’t driving the car or anything about the crash.

He pleaded guilty to driving with an illegal amount of amphetamine in his blood at a mention hearing at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Police prosecutor Leading Se-

nior Constable Renee Bloomfield told the court that Ross’s car crashed into the rear of another vehicle as it approached the Lynbrook Boulevard intersection about dawn on 11 September.

The other driver found Ross slumped over the steering wheel and was unable to rouse him.

Ambulance officers described Ross as dazed, incoherent and “unsteady on his feet”, and had to lead him to the waiting ambulance.

On Monday, Ross also pleaded guilty to using and possessing a container of the liquid drug GHB at Empire nightclub in Narre Warren on 26 July, and failing to answer bail.

He was also in breach of a onemonth suspended sentence and two community corrections orders over drug-related offending.

Defence lawyer Damian McNally argued there were “exceptional circumstances” for Ross to escape the suspended jail term, including a 54-day pre-sentence detention - on unrelated and withdrawn charges in May 2014.

Ross had completed his unpaid work, mental health treatment and drug and financial counselling requirements as part of the CCOs, the court was told.

Mr McNally said Ross had limited himself to cannabis use and not used ice for several months.

The accused had also been shaken by a close friend’s death-byfirearm in April and found a stable private rental home after “years of erratic residence”.

Magistrate Greg Connellan said Ross’s “invalid” detention may be an “exceptional circumstance” but deferred the issue until 17 August.

“The court has to take into account pre-sentence detention that has not been recognised.

“My gut feeling is to defer sentencing and see where we go with the CCO (which ends in five months).”

In the meantime, Ross was disqualified from driving for six months on the drug-driving charge.

Somyurek warned of contempt of Parliament risk

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS EMBATTLED South-Eastern Metropolitan Region MP Adem Somyurek has missed the first two Parliamentary sitting days since being stood down as a cabinet minister on Saturday.

Legislative Council president Bruce Atkinson told the house on Tuesday he had not spoken to the absent MP but had “read in the media” that the South-Eastern Metropolitan MP was ill.

He said it would be a “contempt of the House” if Mr Somyurek was absent just to avoid scrutiny.

The State Opposition revoked granting a “pair” for Mr Somyurek’s absence - which involves one Opposition member abstaining from voting - because he hadn’t provided a medical certificate.

Special Minister of State Gavin Jennings told Parliament on Tuesday

that Mr Somyurek, who has been relieved of his role as Small Business, Innovation and Trade Minister, retained his ministerial salary.

There was an “expectation” Mr Somyurek wouldn’t use his Melbourne CBD ministerial office or ministerial car, Mr Jennings said.

Mr Somyurek was absent from Tuesday and Wednesday’s sittings after being stood down on Saturday pending an “independent” investigation into alleged “intimidating, aggressive and threatening” workplace conduct.

In a statement, he labelled the formal complaint lodged by his chief-of-staff Dimity Paul as “completely baseless and untrue”.

The investigation will be conducted by Secretary of the Department of Premier and Cabinet Chris Eccles.

“I do hope that that can be dealt with quickly, in weeks rather than months.”

Opposition spokeswoman on scrutiny of government Inga Peulich said Mr Andrews had to answer the “hypocrisy” of hiring a withdrawn state election candidate accused of bullying.

The former candidate Helen Constas is employed at Mr Andrews and Mr Jennings’s joint electorate office in Mulgrave.

In a statement, Mr Somyurek said he welcomed the review and “the opportunity to clear my name”.

In 2009, he received a suspended jail term for driving while disqualified. He did not respond to calls from the Journal.

Council split on scheme

“MELBOURNE has an absolute jewel in Dandenong.”

This was just the start of Food Safari host Maeve O’Meara’s praise for the melting pot.

“I just love the diversity and every time I come out there’s something beautiful, different, exotic,” she said.

“People often talk about what makes Australia great – come to Dandenong and it’s all here.”

Ms O’Meara was in MKS Spices’n Things in Dandenong South when the Journal spoke to her ahead of a foodie tour in Dandenong on Friday 22 May. “I’m surrounded by beautiful aromas of curry leaves and all sorts of spices from the subcontinent,” she said.

Greater Dandenong is home to more than 1000 restaurateurs and food retailers representing cuisines from all over the world. Restaurants alone serve more than 50,000 meals each week.

“The future I see is Dandenong being even more of a food destination,” Ms O’Meara said.

“Australians, we love to learn new things, try a few new things.

“The fact that it is all here in one small beautiful place, it just makes life really easy.”

The tour popped into Maiwand Bakery on Scott Street which bakes more than 5000 traditional Afghan flat breads every week in a traditional tandoor oven.

Participants picked up Middle Eastern goods at A1 Lebanese Bakery on Lonsdale Street, Polish smoked meats at Uncle’s Smallgoods and Afghan dishes at Pamir Restaurant.

They finished the day with a Uyghur lunch at Tengri Tag. “People are true to their cultural backgrounds. You’re not getting a dumbed down version, you’re getting the real deal,” Ms O’Meara said.

AN ACTION plan to manage southern Greater Dandenong’s vast tracts of green wedge land was close to being shot down by councillors on Monday.

Councillors were equally split on the action plan despite it being a logical extension of the green wedge management plan endorsed by councillors last year.

The plan passed only with the casting vote of Mayor Sean O’Reilly.

The plan comprised projects to preserve ecological values, landscapedominated vistas and wildlife corridor linkages and to manage the floodprone plains.

The plan also aimed to create “certainty” about appropriate land uses such as recreation, agriculture, “rural residential”, tourism and open space.

It reconfirms a bar on residential development within the Eastern Treatment Plant buffer zone in Bangholme, and rebuffed a bid by Keysborough land owners to carve up their properties for housing estates.

The zone also includes several historic homesteads associated with the early-settler Keys family such as Glen Alvie, Eversleigh and Holmwood farms.

Hookah ban bubbles up

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong Council is seeking to form a coalition with medical bodies and other councils to ban indoor shisha smoking in cafes and restaurants.

Shisha cafes, which are proliferating in Dandenong and Noble Park, have an exemption under the state Tobacco Act to host unrestricted indoor smoking out of a hookah.

Under the loophole, children under 18 are permitted to smoke shisha.

In contrast, cigarettes and other tobacco products are banned from minors and inside cafes and restaurants.

The motion’s proponent, councillor Matthew Kirwan, said the move was partly prompted by a Medical Journal of Australia case study of a young woman - and regular shisha smoker - being rushed to hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning.

His motion attacked the “misconception” that shisha smoke was less harmful than cigarettes.

“We’re a community affected by the lack of regulation of shisha,” Cr Kirwan told a council meeting last Monday.

He noted Victoria is the only Australian state that has a shisha exemption.

The council will write to health bodies the Lebanese Medical Association, the Heart Foundation, Cancer Council of Victoria, Quit Victoria and the state branch of the Australian Medical Association, which have publicly opposed the exemption.

The council will also invite the Municipal Association of Victoria and Victorian Local Governance Association to join the joint campaign directed at the state government.

Shisha cafe owners defend the practice of serving “herbal” shisha, which contains minute quantities of tobacco.

Proprietor Maruf Ahmed told the Journal in 2013 that his fruit-flavoured shisha was not as unhealthy as tobacco-heavy shisha smoked in the Middle East.

Quit Victoria policy manager Kylie Lindorff told the Journal in 2013 that shisha and hookah tobacco posed substantial health risks to both the user and those exposed to secondhand smoke.

“Waterpipe smoking is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking.

“It produces a similar level of air pollutants as cigarettes so staff working in these shisha cafes are not afforded the same protection as those working in other cafes and indoor areas.”

The government’s reported position prior to the state election was that banning shisha “particularly when it has no tobacco content, could unfairly affect parts of our multicultural community“.

Blessing for burial spaces

By CASEY NEILL SPRINGVALE’S new Saint Padre Pio Mausoleum honours a much-loved Italian saint and caters for special burial traditions.

The Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart officially opened the Springvale Botanical Cemetery facility before almost 200 guests last Tuesday, 26 May. Not for profit organisation Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust (SMCT) manages the cemetery.

SMCT CEO Jane Grover said the mausoleum featured natural light, bluestone and terrazzo gallery floors, a sheltered open air central court yard with hedge-lined gardens, a water feature, pine trees and a lifesized bronze statue of Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina.

The mausoleum is a traditional burial method for Italians, particularly those from southern Italy, and ensures that soil does not touch the body.

Most of the mausoleum’s 256 burial crypts are already sold.

Scotland takes centre stage TARTAN, band pipes and animals took centre stage at this year’s Scottish Heritage Day on Sunday, 31 May. In its 13th year the annual event opened up a world of fun and entertainment and brought a little bit of Scotland to Dandenong.

Dandenong Agricultural and Pastoral Society secretary Lynne Ferris said the free event showcases many different Celtic animals.

“The not-for-profit show displayed Welsh black cattle, Shetland ponies, Clydesdales and Celtic bred horses,” Ms Ferris said.

Andrew Spierings joined members from the City of Casey Pipe Band and

entertained show goers with their Highland songs.

“We had the Australasian Guild of town criers, which dressed up in old gear and ran a crier competition,” Ms Ferris said.

Hundreds of people flocked to the Dandenong Showgrounds from 10am to 3pm with crowd favourites the kilt competition and dog show putting smiles on faces.

A Devonshire tea and sausage sizzle kept bellies full and raised money for next year’s event.

Chief executive Sri Samy said the inaugual “recognition” awards will challenge the presumption that new arrivals are “only here for our money and don’t give anything back”.

“In my experience I see a lot of people who give back, even those who have very little or nothing.

“This is one small step to recognise their contribution.”

One early nominee is Donstan who has volunteered at Friends of Refugees to deliver free furniture and other essentials to new arrival families for the past two years.

He also helped to cofound a bike repair workshop - giving out more than 1000 free bikes to families.

The award categories include community service, youth achievement, future leader, sports athlete, all-abilities sport, art, academic achievement and business achievement.

The 42-year-old Dandenong North man said he couldn’t understand how he could be taken into police custody after forcibly trying to eject his argumentative son from his house.

“I was at my own home having a couple of beers,” the man told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

“I have a couple of daughters who I don’t want to be around all of that.”

The case was dismissed.

Breaking out of bad

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A MAN accused of multiple burglaries was allegedly found living with a relative in Dandenong South, contrary to his bail conditions.

Murray Austin had been bailed to live at a Williamstown residence in April – a month after being released from jail - but told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday that he left to escape bad influences.

Senior Constable Marcus Cooksey of Dandenong police told the

court that he’d found Austin with an “open container of liquor” on Foster Street, Dandenong, about 1.15pm on 21 May. Austin had been bailed over aggravated burglary and theft charges after allegedly stealing items such as mobile phones, an i-Pad, cash and debit cards from staff-only areas of a chemist store, a cafe and another business in April.

Austin had failed to report to Williamstown police as part of his bail conditions since 13 April and

had not notified police of his change of address.

Austin had faced 17 charges of failing to appear on bail in the past 10 years, the court was told.

Sen Const Cooksey said Austin, who had a history of substance abuse including heroin, had no income.

He had told police he’d stolen for money and often asked for money in the streets of Melbourne.

The unrepresented Austin said he’d previously stayed at the Dande-

nong South address with his partner and children until he was imprisoned last year.

“When I got out this time, they left and went to South Australia,” he told the court.

“All I wanted to do was see my kids.”

Magistrate Pauline Spencer refused bail on the basis of Austin’s “unstable” housing situation.

His next bail hearing is at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 1 June.

Simple strength was as tough as nails VicRoads and the Country Roads Board, one of his proudest days was to be his first to drive on the Dandenong-Frankston Road overpass.

Ms Harris said her dad eschewed the offer of driving over it in a “flash car”, preferring to travel the crest on his trusty bulldozer.

Known for his pristine memory, Mr Wilson only had happy recollections of his boys’ home upbringing from the age of 10.

He love the boys’ home reunions but outlived his old buddies.

Tough as old boots, he outlived many doctors’ prognostications of doom in 2009 when he walked through glass causing extensive brain bleeds and fractures.

When he survived, the family were told he’d never speak or walk again and that he’d be confined to sitting at the end of a bed.

With painful practice, he retrained as if starting out as a baby.

To his surviving family, it was that strength that endured.

KEITH Wilson never had a birth certificate; all he wanted to do was “belong”, said his surviving daughter, Sharon Harris.

Mr Wilson, 76, who grew up in an orphanage, with his foster mum Ethel, and then in Balwyn Boys Home, would have enjoyed his poignant funeral send-off by family and friends in Noble Park last Wednesday.

He would have been touched by singer Janene Joy perfoming the country-western tunes he loved, Ian Arell on bagpipes farewelling his coffin and the spoken tributes of three generations - daughter Sharon Harris, grandson Raymond Harris and great-grandson Jayden Harris.

Mr Harris and late wife Helen Wilson were stalwarts of Dandenong North in another time.

He was a “gentle giant” and handyman with a penchant for ‘liquid nails’, living in a backyard strewn with garden gnomes and sculptures.

In that time they walked down the street and everybody seemed to know everybody.

Overpass progress A DANDENONG lobby group has welcomed progress on an overpass to cut congestion and save lives.

But the State Government is yet to reveal just what that progress is.

Last month the Journal reported that Greater Dandenong CEO John Bennie said traffic measures to combat congestion around Abbotts Road and Remington Drive in Dandenong South were on the State Government’s agenda.

The Committee for Dandenong in 2013 proposed a toll road overpass above the rail line to link Remington Drive with Pound Road and improve freeway access.

The call followed a fatal collision between a train and truck at the Abbotts Road-Cranbourne railway line intersection - the second crash causing death at the crossing in five years.

The issue raised its head again in April last year after VicRoads closed Bayliss Road at the Westernport Highway, forc-

ing vehicles onto surrounding roads including Abbotts.

“The congestion in and around Abbotts Road is a huge negative impact upon productivity in the area and often creates gridlock on a twice-daily basis,” committee chairman Gary Castricum said last week.

“However, much more important is the loss of life that has occurred at the crossing over the last decade.

“Although the overpass at Remington Drive will not fix all of the congestion issues associ-

ated with the Dandenong South traffic area, it is a wonderful start.”

Mr Castricum said removing the Abbotts Road level crossing must also be an absolute priority.

The Journal asked the State Government about its plans for Remington Drive and when they were likely to come to fruition.

A spokesman for Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the government would remove at least 20 of Victoria’s 50 most dangerous level cross-

ings in its first term, including Abbotts Road.

He said initial consultation with the council about the best solution had started but no timeframe for its removal had been finalised.

“We look forward to working with residents, businesses and council on developing the best solution for Abbotts Road,“ he said.

The Committee for Dandenong is a community-based group of business people concerned with promoting Dandenong’s image and interests.

Latitude’s got the attitude A DANDENONG South developer took home a national award last week.

Latitude 37 Group won the Australian Professional Medium Builder/Renovator of the Year title at the HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards, held on the Gold Coast.

HIA represents more than 40,000 buildings, suppliers and contractors involved in residential construction.

Managing director Shane Goodwin said industry professionals selected winners from state-based finalists and the awards reflected the increasingly diverse and competitive Australian housing industry.

Custom design and build company Latitude 37 was established in 2006 and specialises in knock down and rebuild projects. It also offers a pre-designed range under the Esperance Homes brand. Latitude 37 employs about 60 industry professionals.

Artwork colour call for impact A LANDMARK Dandenong business became a blank canvas for budding artists.

The Dandenong Pavilion offered up its external walls to Melbourne street artist DVATE and the local KSA crew to transform.

“They got a crew together and just went for it,” owner Dani Zeini said.

“They just love to paint. These guys, any opportunity to do something they’re on it straight away.

“The back wall was pretty bad. There was nothing there, it was pretty empty.”

It’s now filled with colourful designs that include a burger monster surrounded by beef and buns.

“There’s a nice skyline at the back with a neon sign,” Mr Zeini said.

“It’s urban. I really like the style.

“It kind of fits in with the food that we do.

“The response has been great. A lot of people take photos of it.

“Visually I think it’s had a strong impact.”

Mr Zeini plans to change the design annually.

SESQUICENTENNIAL celebrations are key components in Dandenong Market’s budget for the financial year ahead.

The Dandenong icon turns 150 next year and is set to return a $1.25 million profit to City of Greater Dandenong - up from $1.2 million the previous year.

Councillors approved the annual plan, which they deemed confidential and did not release in full, at their 25 May meeting.

The available report said Market Sundays continued to grow in 2014’15, as did the Dandenong World Food Fare.

The market also finished stage one of its Market Square refurbishment, rolled out new branding and introduced a tour.

In the coming year market management will work on Market Square’s second stage. It will also work on developing the southern car park or Southern Deck, including introducing pop-up events and planning an alfresco dining area and family zone.

Dandenong Market will celebrate its 150th birthday on 10 October next year and is planning several community events and celebrations in the lead-up.

There is to be a Dandenong Market book, a photographic essay highlighting the market’s regional and historical significance that will focus on how residents and market shoppers lived.

The market will install a permanent photographic exhibition and will bury a time capsule.

It will review and detail plans for expanding cool storage infrastructure, which is in high demand pending Melbourne Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market’s relocation in August this year.

Skill sets for future work

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH ROBOTICS, plastering, tiling and cake decorating were among the activities Keysborough College students got to try at their careers expo.

Almost 1000 year nine to year 12 students participated in the expo on Thursday 21 May. Banksia campus principal Patrick Boyd said career education is not taken lightly at the college.

“Sometime it’s not a direct route to their final career and sometimes students will do a TAFE course before moving on,” Mr Boyd said.

In its fifth year the expo showed about 40 exhibitions from universities and TAFEs. “Career expos let the students talk to the actual people who are involved in the courses who can give them an excellent idea of what’s in the course and the sort of ATAR score needed,” he said.

Keysborough College educates its students on possible career pathways from year seven onwards and Mr Boyd said he thinks many students already have a good idea of where they want to go.

“We put them through an extensive pathways program studying the world of work and year seven and eight students get taken through quite a rigorous online process called Campus Interaction which guides them through intense questioning which narrows down what they’re interested in,” he said.

In term three year 10 students are counselled about their VCE subject choices to ensure

their career goals are matched with their subject selection.

“We have a program from year seven through to year 12 where each student annually reviews their pathways program and it works really well and generates interest for the students,” Mr Boyd said.

“When they know what marks they need they have a goal and work towards it which gives them a very good reason

History beneath the surface A TOUR of the aboriginal sites of significance throughout Greater Dandenong and Casey revealed the past and what is buried below but also enlightened those present on what Aboriginal people want for tomorrow.

The council’s Inter-Council Aboriginal Consultative (ICAC) organised a tour reserved for councillors and Aboriginal community members with the hope of spreading what they learnt throughout their community.

Aboriginal singer songwriter Kutcha Edwards hosted the tour and spoke about his vision for the future.

“It’s not about an us and them mentality, it’s about a collective mindset for a better tomorrow,” Mr Edwards said.

The tour stopped at the Dandenong Police Paddocks, Hampton Park renewal project, Lynbrook Estate and the Dandenong Pultney Street Park.

The group of 22 looked at scar trees and listened to talks from Wurundjeri Land Council representative Jemima Gardiner, archaeologist Mandy Nicholson and Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-operative executive officer Andrew Gardiner.

Ms Nicholson said the Lynbrook Estate was previously a swamp.

“Before it was a farm it was a swamp, prolific in bird life with a lot of sand from Port Phillip bay, most of Cranbourne’s sand is beneath us here in Lynbrook,” she said.

Ms Nicholson was working for the Wurundjeri Land Council and dug the Lynbrook area 17 years ago.

“It’s about recording the history of the area and the different people that lived here,” she said.

“I was born in 1971 and at school was taught a particular view of Aboriginal history that was largely about having pity upon the Aboriginal people, about what white man had done when they colonised Australia,” Cr O’Reilly said.

“This experience has helped me to understand that the aboriginal people still don’t feel that they have been given the due respect as Australia’s first people,” he said.

ICAC member and Casey Local Area Commander Inspector Paul Breen spoke to the group outlining why it was so impor-

tant for him to attend.

“As a local commander I have to get my head around these complex issues because we often see drunken, homeless and drug affected Aboriginals and for me to be a better leader I need to be a part of these meetings,” Insp Breen said.

The tour was held in the lead up to Reconciliation Week and provided participants with a greater knowledge of what Dandenong and Casey was once like and the exact locations of Aboriginal significance in their community.

Refugees are building bridges for employment A RUSH of asylum seekers who are desperate to exercise newly-acquired work rights has descended on the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre’s Dandenong office.

Manager Rosa Misitano said the office – funded through philanthropy – faces the challenge of getting 25 new weekly clients job-ready.

She said there had been a recent surge of asylum seekers transferred from bridging visas to temporary protection visas - which has allowed them to work in Australia for the first time.

The ASRC’s case workers help clients to create resumes, and learn the art of interviews, follow-up calls, and occupational health and safety.

For many clients, they also must first attend classes for six months to improve their English-language skills.

“They say ‘I’ve been here two years’ but we can’t put them forth to an employer if they need a translator,” Ms Misitano said.

“You need your basics for (occupational) health and safety.

“Employers want people who can follow instructions.”

It’s hard to pull the reins on clients “excited and desperate” for work.

In many cases, their lives have been in impoverished and unemployed limbo for months and years.

In the past year, the resource centre has helped 37 clients gain their “first job in Australia”.

“Some employers are wonderful,” Ms Misitano said. “They’re really interested in having someone loyal and willing to work hard.

“We get people quite qualified who are willing to take farm and factory work. They don’t leave after three weeks.”

Volunteers from various workplaces have recently pitched in to help fast-track clients’ job-ready induction.

Recently five staff from global IT company Workday helped out with resume writing and job skills workshops.

The ASRC is seeking volunteers who are experienced in Australian workplace culture as well as qualified English as a Second Language tutors.

By RUSSELL BENNETT FOR Endeavour Hills’ product Andrew Bogut, it all comes down to just four more wins. His Golden State Warriors stormed through the NBA’s regular season with 67 wins from 82 games, led by the league’s most valuable player Stephen Curry in a phenomenal individual 2014/15 campaign.

But aside from earning home-court advantage against the might of megastar Le Bron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers, that all counts for naught now. The slate is wiped clean.

For the second straight season, an Australian will walk away with a championship ring - either Bogut, or Cavaliers’ cult hero Matthew Dellavedova.

Both have earned rave reviews from their team mates for their insatiable desire to win, and their willingness to do whatever it takes for their respective teams. Yet some NBA followers label them as ‘dirty’.

Any avid NBA watcher would know that’s not the case, but what the pair does provide, however, is a refusal to be pushed around and a competitive edge that has played a huge role in getting the Warriors and the Cavaliers into the big dance - a shot of winning it all for two success-starved franchises.

The Cavaliers have never won a title, while the Warriors’ last championship came 40 years ago.

The coach of that Golden State team, Al Attles, was on hand to present this season’s Warriors with the Western Conference Finals’ trophy on

Thursday afternoon (Australian EST).

Bogut’s enormous 213-centimetre frame could be seen at the back of the dais clear as day.

The now 30-year-old has come a hell of a long way from being selected by the Milwaukee Bucks with the first overall pick in the 2005 draft, to earlier this year passing Luc Longley as the Australian to play the most NBA games.

Bogut has battled through a series of freakish injuries over his career to date but he has still played at least 65 games in seven seasons so far, and is regarded by many as one of the best passing big men of his era.

After switching across to the VWFL Premier Division side Eastern Devils last year, Lambert, 22, originally from Noble Park, has pushed a strong case for Victorian selection and earned the right to battle New South Wales in a State of Origin clash this weekend.

The wily midfielder worked hard to bounce back from a disappointing 2014 and was pleased to get her first chance to don the Big V. “It’s pretty good - first time representing Victoria and I’ve never done it before,” Lambert said.

“I tried out last year, but I couldn’t play because I was suspended.

“Last year was not my finest year - reported twice - but this year has been much better.”

After the rampaging success of Gridiron Victoria’s inaugural women’s season last year, featuring the Berwick Diamonds who finished third overall - the league introduced an All Star match to showcase the league’s premier talent.

The rosters for the two teams were announced this week, with 15 players from the Diamonds’ 2014 squad making the grade.

Diamonds’ co-captain Cat Bouwhuis thought it was thrilling to get a chance and play on the biggest stage yet created for women’s gridiron.

While it will be a little strange to clash with her teammates in the Friday night spectacular, Bouwhuis admitted it was a great opportunity to

show how far the sport had progressed in only one season.

The Fire versus Ice showdown will be Friday 5 June, from 7pm, at the State Netball Hockey Centre.

The Berwick Diamonds and Miners’ Juniors sign-up day will be Saturday 13 June, at Sydney Pargeter Reserve, Endeavour Hills, from 10am-1pm.

THERE was no doubting No Diggity’s performance on Thursday evening when she claimed a heat of the Peter Rocket Damsels Dash.

Given room to move early, No Diggity mustered pace to lead clearly around the first bend and held a two length margin from Ima Fairytale heading down the back straight. At that stage it was all over, No Diggity went on to win by fourand-a-half lengths in a smart time of 29.49.

“It was pleasing to see her get room to move early - she got the chance to show what she can really do,” trainer Graeme Jose said.

IT WAS a hectic day for Hallam Senior College’s rugby league side on Wednesday as it flew to Sydney, almost stole the upset GIO CUP victory over Matraville Sports High and flew back to Melbourne with a lot of confidence in the carry-on luggage.

Erskineville Oval in Sydney was the scene of a major turning point in Australian rugby league history - the first time a Victorian school played in the NRL schoolboys’ competition.

Up and back in a single day, with a hardfought game in between, Hallam took the field for the first battle in its maiden GIO Schoolboys Cup campaign and fell 28-34 despite a strong start.

Matraville fired back to take the lead and hold on, despite a gallant three try effort in the dying minutes from Hallam.

Two contentious disallowed tries could have pushed Hallam into the lead, but it wasn’t meant to be to take a debut win in its first match.

Coach Jamie Fardell said the loss still showed the capability of the roster and most importantly, that Hallam is at the standard necessary for the cup.

“It was really good to see that we are at that level,” Fardell said.

“The boys bought into it and were extremely proud to be the first ones representing us and being on that stage.

“You have it in your head that you think you’re at that standard, but to see it happen after all this time and effort it was definitely pleasing.”

Fardell praised John Sauni in his first Hallam match for his hit-ups and try-scoring efforts, along with Tokorima Metua and skipper Jake Johan for their impressive feats in the inaugural GIO Cup clash.

The second fixture in Hallam’s GIO Cup campaign will be 15 June in Melbourne - either at Gosch’s Paddock or on AAMI Park.

“Next two games will be pretty tough,” Fardell said.

“They’re two of the top four teams in the country and we’ll see how we go against the best around.”

Back to Basics

By JARROD POTTER EVEN with fresh faces and one of its youngest teams put on the park in recent years, Dandenong had the legs to outrun the Knights and take a triumphant 19-point victory.

Dandenong was jumped early - as Northern seized its chances with the wind to boot five firstterm goals - leaving the Stingrays to receive an almighty spray at the first break from the coaching staff.

After the pep-talk, the Rays went back to basics and with the wind at their back, started to chip away at the Knights’ tally.

Needing a bit of a brain-rattling to get going - returning defender/midfielder Lachlan Batten passed a concussion test in the first quarter before opening up his account in a big way in the second.

He booted three goals as a crumbing forward before he was switched to his more customary defensive post - excelling from the last line with precision kick outs.

Batten’s haul was part of a rampaging sixgoal effort from the Rays to go from deficit to a 21-point margin at half time.

While the wind was an ally through the first half, both Knights and Stingrays alike struggled to kick away with the stiff breeze after the main break.

Dandenong clamped down on Northern’s attack

through the third term - setting up the win by booting three goals of its own against the strong winds.

Cox, Jake Di Pasquale and Zak Roscoe rallied through the centre to set up the rear-guard attack and while the wind did Dandenong no favours in the last term, the Rays were able to hold off the Knights’ final charge to take the 14.11 (95) to 11.10 (76) triumph.

“We had seven changes and two kids playing their first game and another two playing their second and another two on top of that coming back from five-six weeks out with injury, so we always knew it was going to be pretty tough,” Stingrays’ coach Craig Black said.

Key defender Brandon White was exceptional - brushing aside concerns of an arm injury from last week’s national championships match to spoil the Knights’ forward entries.

He also roamed through the midfield - running off his man easily - to set up a few goals late in the clash.

Also excelling were ruckman-forward-defender-everyman Harry Prior, midfielder and handy-forward option Mitch Cox (3 goals), and last-line-of-defence Jordan Rouse.

As of Sunday morning, the Stingrays sit third on the TAC Cup ladder with a 6-2 record heading into the Queen’s Birthday long-weekend bye.

Dandenong will host Gippsland Power on 13 June from 1pm.

HYUNDAI has launched a midlife update of its Veloster sports hatch with most of the changes being applied to the SR Turbo model including a higher spec variant, sevenspeed double-clutch transmission, tweaked suspension and the option of a new matte finish exterior paint.

Four models are now offered, one more than before - the Veloster, Veloster Plus, SR Turbo and the new SR Turbo Plus.

Importantly, the Series II Veloster still looks the same, which makes sense because, even though it’s been around for three years, the sporty little Hyundai is still one of the most eye-catching cars on the road.

It looks great from every angle, especially the rear - which, after all, is the view that most other road users (and potential buyers) get of any car.

Side skirts give the SR a squatter look while the dark glass sunroof adds to the overall effect - especially if the black glass contrasts strongly with one of the bolder paint shades.

While the new Blue Sprinter exterior colour may not be bold it does catch the eye because it has a matt finish - a nice change from gloss.

The rear passenger door (yes, there’s still only one) retains the ‘hidden’ handle that gives Veloster a coupe-like appearance.

Series II Hyundai Veloster is still one of the most exciting looking cars on the market. daytime running lights that further enhance the car’s appearance but also make it more visible.

Engines are unchanged from the Series I Veloster with two 1.6-litre petrol units, one naturally-aspirated, the other turbocharged.

Transmission options are sixspeed manual with either engine and double-clutch (DCT) six-speed with the standard engine and a new seven-speed DCT with the turbo. Both DCTs come with paddle shifts.

Unlike some of its rivals that are really two-plus-twos Veloster is a genuine four-seater.

Leg room is reasonable even for a pair of adults although they will suffer from the usual coupe issue of limited headroom.

Front headroom is fine in the

standard Veloster although taller occupants in the SR may have to partially open the sunroof blind to allow extra space.

The dashboard manages to combine a curvaceous design with wellpositioned and logical controls and the steering wheel has the usual selection of audio, telephone and cruise control buttons.

The entry-level Veloster uses a traditional key ignition, all other models have a proximity smart key with pushbutton start. Likewise with leather-appointed seats.

All Velosters get a five-star ANCAP safety rating with six airbags; electronic stability control; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, brake assist and vehicle stability management; hill-start as-

sist (DCT models); tyre pressure monitoring; reversing camera; rear parking assist; and automatic dusksensing headlights.

A seven-inch LCD touchscreen controls the usual infotainment features that include a premium audio system; rear-view camera; and satellite navigation (Plus models only) and there are USB and Auxiliary sockets.

Bluetooth phone and audio is standard across the range with pairing simple and logical.

While many, perhaps most, buyers will make their decision based on the distinctive looks of the Veloster there’s plenty of driving fun to be had especially from the SR Turbo.

We were able to spend a couple of hours on a closed road circuit with plenty of challenging corners and we had a ball pushing the car to its limits.

It isn’t up to the performance standards of the Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ twins but has got a little closer through suspension enhancements that have refined the Veloster.
