By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN GEELONG chief Brian Cook wants the AFL to reveal when a player reaches two social drug strikes to avoid a West Coast Eagles-style drug culture from developing at the Cattery.

Cook told a Geelong Business Breakfast this week social drugs were a “huge issue, it’s a cultural issue, because culture affects everything”.

Cook said a drugs subculture emerged at the Eagles while he was the club’s chief executive officer in the ’90s.

He was pushing the AFL to reveal when a player had accumulated two strikes for drugs like cocaine, marijuana and ice.

Cook also wanted the AFL to tell the Cats if a player they were trading for had any drug strikes against him.

nual drug statistics from the AFL. “There are always two things we’re worried about: how many are on two strikes and is there anyone on our player leadership group that has a strike.

“If there is one of our leaders that might be taking drugs we would be really worried.

“The second thing is if there are multiple positive tests among certain age groups because if you get two 18-year-olds, or three or four, you can bet your bottom dollar it’s a subculture developing.

“We have to be really careful about that. That’s what happened at the (West Coast) Eagles when I was there.

“Then players in a subculture can become part of the player leadership.

Problem was there were two generously-proportioned gentlemen of similar ethnicity, both in suits, white shirts and navy blue ties and sitting a seat apart. Several times the camera lingered on the actual president before honing in on MP Katos.

Add to that a 77-point thrashing and it’s no wonder Carlton supporters were singing the blues.

NEW RESEARCH findings from the boffins at Deakin University pose some unusual considerations for the future of animals, including humanity.

The latest breakthrough suggests Australian parrots have been growing larger beaks over the past 145 years to combat climate change.

But why?

“Birds use their beaks to keep themselves cool,” rationalises lead researcher Dr Matthew Symonds, explaining how they pump blood around their bills to lose excess heat.

New blow to charity as van stolen

SUCCESSIVE setbacks have left a Geelong charity appealing for public assistance.

UnitingCare Geelong chief Des Younghusband said thieves had stolen the community service agency’s van from a property on Reserve Rd, Grovedale, last week.

The charity used the 15-yearold white Ford Transit van to distribute emergency relief packages for struggling local families and individuals.

“Our people work very hard trying to assist people in the Geelong community, so it does come as a bit of a blow to morale and

sadly it will affect our work supporting op shops and emergency relief centres,” Mr Younghusband said.

The van, registration TAO 364, has distinct UnitingCare Geelong signage with acknowledgements of community members who funded its purchase.

Mr Younghusband said the cost of replacing the vehicle would seriously affect the agency’s work providing emergency aid.

“As an older vehicle the van was insured for market value, so will only return a few thousand dollars in insurance. At this stage we’re expecting the cost of replacing it with a new van to be

around $20,000, which is a very significant expense for us.”

Mr Younghusband urged anyone with information to call Waurn Ponds Police on 5247 3500.

Donations to the charity were affected when a former entity, UnitingCare Concerns, was recently named in an Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission crackdown. UnitingCare Geelong had replaced the earlier entity but donors had failed to realise the change, said chairman Doug Thomson.

The charity was also forced to relocate to Grovedale after the Uniting Church sold its former South Geelong base.

Lifeline warns ‘lives at risk’ if state cuts funds

By NOEL MURPHY LIFELINE’S Geelong chief has warned a looming State Government funding cut will endanger lives as the agency is forced to cut the calls it can answer.

Board chair Joe Crosbie said growing social and financial desperation across Geelong had increased calls to the service by 40 per cent to 10,000 a year.

But Spring Street was now about to reverse a funding increase of $50,000 a year secured 18 months ago under the previous government, he said yesterday.

“We don’t have it in writing yet but that’s what the Department of Human

Services (DHS) has told us.”

Mr Crosbie said Lifeline Geelong had only just managed to turn around a serious deficit from increasing demand when it found itself faced with the new cash crisis.

“Basically, we’ve just continued to answer more calls. Three years ago we took 7000, that’s risen to 10,000 this year - around 40 per cent over just three years.”

Mr Crosbie said job losses and straitened financial circumstances across Geelong had been key factors in the extra demand.

Lifeline has been receiving around $100,000 in state cash for its centres in five DHS-designated regions across

Victoria. Barwon Southwest, the only region with two Lifeline centres, was granted an extra $50,000 and $25,000 annually over three years for its Geelong and Warrnambool agencies respetively under the previous government.

South Barwon Liberal MP Andrew Katos said the funding increase was to recognise the unique circumstances of the region.

The proposed cuts would hit hard at some of Geelong’s most vulnerable, he said.

“If you’re going to cut something to balance a budget why would you cut Lifeline? It’s pretty heartless.

“We’ve got a lot of issues with re-

trenched workers and drug and alcohol problems. These are the sort of services people reach out to if someone is having suicidal tendencies.

“That’s why we increased the funding.”

The latest Lifeline threat follows a crisis 18 months ago when rising wages, costs and new protocols undermined its ability to meet growing demand.

Lifeline Geelong has 40 telephone counsellors and another 60 staff working across five shops in Geelong, Drysdale and Colac. Lifeline Geelong had to draw $40,000 from its reserves to keep afloat in 2013 despite the $50,000 funding boost.

How much can a koala bear? Plenty if it’s my Clancy

By NOEL MURPHY THEY might spend most of the day asleep, pee on unwitting tourists and spook campers with their their night-time grunting but koalas are a muchloved Aussie icon that needs protecting.

That’s certainly the view of children’s author Melinda King whose new book, Koala Clancy of the You Yangs, is aimed at raising awareness of the troubles facing koalas.

The book follows the drama as Koala Clancy leaves his mum and travels to a new bush home in

the weed-infested You Yangs.

Luckily for Clancy, tourists from around the world arrive to remove weeds and make his home healthy.

“I hope that the next generations can get an understanding from a young age of what they can do to keep koalas in the wild forever,” Melinda told the Independent.

Melinda is an Aboriginal guide, koala researcher, author and a wildlife educator. Her interest in koalas started early, at 12, when she started researching them in the Brisbane Ranges and

You Yangs.

Now 26, she is one of Australia’s youngest but most-experienced koala field researchers and works for wildlife tourism operator Echidna Walkabout Nature Tours.

Echidna Walkabout has published her book as part of its Make a Home for Koala Clancy conservation project.

“It heralds the start of a local and international education program about conservation of our native species,” said Echidna Walkabout’s Janine Duffy.

EVERYONE has a life story to tell and it becomes even more focussed when death begins to loom large.

That’s the experience of two Geelong people involved in Palliative Care Victoria's The Two of Us, a unique collection of stories and photographs with palliative-care recipients.

The organisation commissioned visual artist and writer Pippa Wischer for the project, part of Palliative Care Week, to encourage people with terminal illnesses and to inspire volunteers.

Project participant Peter Hinchliffe spoke of meeting Barwon Health volunteer and artist Ros Pollard when she stopped for a chat as he began palliative care six months ago.

“At the time I thought, ‘Everyone, please leave me alone’,” Peter confessed.

“Nine times out of 10 you haven’t processed it yourself and that’s all part of this journey, I guess, but Ros offered the art side of things, which has been good.

“I used to love drawing when I was seven or eight and my mother used to have art books. In the hospital everyone, including my family, started having a go.

“Ros has got the knack of getting people into it.

“With the brain tumours, it’s hard to see sometimes and it’s good that I can concentrate and know

that I'm making things work again.”

Ros discovered art therapy when she was in hospital as a long-term patient with a life-threatening condition.

“My biggest aim is to spark that bit of joy in people, no matter their circumstance,” she said.

“I’m humbled to sit with people who are going through a hard period in their life. I guess when you have a little understanding, even though every person is different, you can relate to each other.”

Barwon Health palliative-care patient Sigrid Mould has been sharing her life story with volunteer Tonya Court, creating a valued legacy for Sigrid's family.

“We got on very well, right from the beginning,” Sigrid said.

“We talked and covered virtually my whole life history that I can remember. It was a good thing too because there are probably things that my daughter doesn’t know and she’s the only one left.

“The story of my journey more or less shows my family what I believe, that I’m not scared, that I do the best I can.

“The hard times, the disappointing times, become rather unimportant as you go along.

“I want it to be uplifting and I’m very excited about recording my life story now.”

Kids ‘read to dog’ in unique Geelong study

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A CORPORATE takeover of the company that owns Geelong’s hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) cable has stymied the region’s NBN rollout.

NBN Co planned to acquire internet provider iiNet’s HFC network for integration into the super-fast broadband rollout.

But the takeover manoeuvres for iiNet, with TPG Telecom and M2 Group making $1.5 billion-plus offers, have put the negotiations on the backburner.

Neighbourhood Cable developed the local HFC network before being sold to TransACT, which iiNet then bought.

The setback has alarmed Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson who has written to Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull appealing for an “expedited” NBN rollout in Geelong.

Ms Henderson said the situation left many families and small businesses in a “precarious” position.

“In the Geelong suburbs of Grovedale, Belmont, Highton, Waurn Ponds and Marshall many local residents are struggling to obtain an adequate broadband connection,” Ms Henderson wrote.

“Some residents have no access to ADSL at all due to the fact there are

no ports at the local exchange.

“These are areas of rapid population growth being serviced by only one exchange.

“As a result, many families and small businesses in Victoria’s largest regional city have been left in a precarious situation.

“While I appreciate that NBN Co plans to integrate Geelong’s HFC cable network into its network, there has been no progress on acquiring the HFC network from iiNet to date.

“This is incredibly disappointing, exacerbated by the fact that iiNet is the subject of a takeover bid by at least one other telecommunications company.

“I have advocated very strongly to NBN Co including to its CEO, Bill Morrow, that the rollout of the NBN to Geelong’s southern suburbs must be expedited.

“Accordingly, I write to request that NBN Co abandon its policy of waiting until the HFC network can be acquired in Geelong and immediately commence plans to “infill” the NBN in the southern suburbs in Geelong where HFC cable is not available.”

Ms Henderson said a planned rollout of the NBN to 40,000 premises in the Bellarine Peninsula and Colac Otway, Golden Plains and Surf Coast shires had been “well-received”.

IT SOUNDS odd but Tony Chalkley swears it works.

And so good is his idea of getting kids to read books to dogs that it’s moving into the classroom.

Heading the charge in this unusual reading therapy is Squirt, a black and white mutt that will participate in a 12-month study if Dr Chalkley can whip up enough money from an online fundraiser.

A Deakin University media lecturer and former primary school teacher, Dr Chalkley has spent long hours in the classroom with Squirt and seen some remarkable changes when kids read to the dog.

“It’s a little bit magical the way kids, who are normally reluctant readers, line up to read with Squirt the therapy dog,” he said.

“The simple act of patting and talking with Squirt triggers the desire to share stories from the children’s own pet history.

“Most kids seem to start by talking about the animals they’ve owned. Then they talk about life events that have happened with these pets and, finally, they share how they felt as a result.

“Something really fantastic happens when kids read to Squirt. Their confidence just soars and I’d like to find out why.

“What is it about reading to a canine friend that motivates kids to learn to read?”

Dr Chalkley has embarked on a crowdfunding exercise to raise cash so he can get out to six schools in Geelong with Squirt. He expects the data he gathers will support existing pet and animal therapy programs, improve and expand the training of handlers and develop innovative ways to develop literacy skills in the classroom.

“Apart from literacy, dogs can help with things like easing the transition for prep students and providing a sense of connection for students from disadvantaged backgrounds,” he said.

“They’re also particularly loved by children with autism or dyslexia.”

“Reading to dogs provides a simple form of engagement. Dogs are non-judgemental and highly personable.

“They also provide a positive diversion for the child, so there’s less intense focus on their performance - and students feel like there is less pressure.”

ENVIRONMENTALISTS have welcomed a state study that threatens to stymie a $4billion residential development on Moolap's disused saltworks.

Several groups have cited fears for bird habitats since Ridley Corporation floated plans for Nelson Cove, promising 5000 homes and thousands of jobs.

“There’s no question the saltworks should be retained in public ownership to be managed as a nature reserve to be enjoyed for its recreational and environmental values,” said Geelong Environment Council's Joan Lindros.

“The saltworks have been subjected to ongoing degradation following their closure in 2007.

Much of this has resulted from Ridley’s failure to maintain appropriate water flows at the site but this can easily be reversed.”

Geelong Field Naturalists Club’s Bruce Lindsay, a former Greens candidate, was “cautiously optimistic” about Environment Minister and Bellarine MP Lisa Neville’s plans for a land-use

“Minister Neville has indicated the study would include consideration of the area’s environmental values and we’re keen to understand what that will mean for the former saltworks site.”

BirdLife Australia and Bellarine Catchment Network also welcomed the study.

“Moolap provides important habitat for a suite of resident and migratory shorebirds,” said BirdLife's Jenny Lau. “It’s an integral part of the Port Phillip (western shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar site and is known habitat for

EPBC-listed threatened species such as fairy tern and orangebellied parrot.”

The Nelson Cove project, pegged for disused land between Moolap and Point Henry’s abandoned Alcoa site, would help revitalise a flagging Geelong economy as major manufacturers pack up and move away.

The State Government study follows the environment council and Queenscliff Environment Forum demanding last year legislative safeguards for 18 wetlands across the Bellarine Peninsula, including the Cheetham salt fields and Point Henry.

New claims in Deakin turmoil

SECURITY guards escorted the architect of central Geelong’s Vision 2 revival from Deakin University amid legal wranglings with staff, according to sensational new claims.

Professor Hisham Elkadi, who took up a new post in England unexpectedly last year, is embroiled in legal action against Deakin and its Vice Chancellor, Professor Jane den Hollander, over alleged racism and discrimination.

But Deakin is in the extraordinary situation of defending itself, Prof Elkadi and others in court against separate bullying and discrimination claims from senior academic Mark Webber.

Deakin and Prof den Hollander are also involved in a third court case, alleging injury as result of bullying, discrimination and victimisation.

Deakin sources told the Independent that wran-

glings before and after Prof Elkadi’s departure had left morale within the university’s architecture department “toxic“.

They cited workload issues, concerns about student assessments and staff personality clashes.

Prof Elkadi was reported in national media this week as possibly responsible for the bullying of faculty members.

Deakin sources made similar allegations to the Independent.

Neither Deakin, Prof Hollander nor Prof Elkadi responded to Independent’s requests for comment.

Prof Elkadi’s allegation he was denied a promotion because of his race, colour and nationality is

scheduled to go before the federal court in September. He alleges Prof den Hollander cited his accent and skin colour in professional and social dealings.

Prof Elkadi left Deakin abruptly last year, with sources claiming two security guards escorted him from his office after he failed to appear at a lecture.

He was head of Deakin’s School of Architecture, chairman of the university’s academic board and a high-profile proponent of revitalising central Geelong. He spearheaded the Vision 2 proposal, which was incorporated into a council action plan.

In papers lodged with the federal court Prof Elkadi claims he was asked to withdraw his application for senior posts given to less-qualified academics.

New event to promote ‘health and wellness’ options CEO’s drugs fear IMPROVING health and wellbeing will be the focus of a new event at Geelong West Town Hall in July.

Organisers said Geelong Community Health and Wellness Day would draw together dozens of local practitioners in stalls with advice and information for healthier lifestyles.

Natalie Pickett, the chief of online program Wellness on Time, said the event would cover everything from mental health and nutrition through to exercise, sport and various therapies.

“Positive health exhibitors will engage with the community to establish relationships, discuss and demonstrate a range of health and wellness activities, services and products to share health and wellness fun with everyone.”

Ms Pickett said the 26 July event would be a convenient opportunity for time-poor patrons to access tips and ideas.

“We all know how difficult it is to plan and include wellness activities in our daily schedule.”

Cook said he was sure the AFL would change its three-strikes policy.

“Instead of only sanctioning players with three strikes, I think that might go to two.

“From our point of view, what is really important is that once a player has two strikes we should know.

Geelong has had its own drug issues, with premiership player Mathew Stokes receiving a 12-month good-behaviour bond in 2010 after pleading guilty to possessing cocaine.

City lights up with Aboriginal arts

COLOURFUL: City Hall lights up with Aboriginal projections from 5.30pm today.

COLOURFUL Aboriginal artwork is scheduled to light up Geelong’s City Hall tonight.

Councillor Eddy Kontelj announced that the latest projections initiative for the building would help mark Reconciliation Week.

City Hall has also served as a canvas for nightly digital projections to celebrate last Christmas and the Anzac Centenary.

The light shows have attracted thousands to central Geelong as council seeks to add attractions in the city area.

Cr Kontelj hoped the Aboriginal projections would also be a hit.

“It will be spectacular,” he said.

Letters Mall wastes police time

Queen's Park the city's best gathering place

IN my opinion, Geelong’s mall should be pulled up and used for buses.

This would stop a lot of teenagers sitting in the mall and getting into trouble.

Who needs a mall? Most country centres don’t have them.

Stawell has just a street to walk up without cars and which is made of brick all the way along. It shows that malls aren’t needed.

Consider what Geelong’s mall does: waste police time stopping fights when officers would be better used out on the roads or fighting the ice plague.

I hope Geelong’s council supports removing the mall so police can save lives and clean our town of ice.

MORE to the point of Double Take (Independent, 22 May), Geelong Highland Gathering should never have been railroaded from its ratepayer-owned Queen’s Park venue after 53 years.

In the interim, the gathering, which commenced in 1857 and ironically gained City of Greater Geelong major event status in 2008 for attracting up to 6000 punters, has limped from one dud venue to another before taking up an opportunity at Deakin University's Waurn Ponds Campus.

Why, though, in 2009 did the City bow to a quartet of elitist sports unwilling to share a superior ratepayer-owned venue for a weekend annually?

Perhaps the flimsy-yet-successful lobby is best encapsulated in the last paragraph of Newtown & Chilwell Cricket Club's Two Blue Tribune of 21 October 2009: “Our club applauds the decision of the CoGG to move the highland gathering to a venue more suited for an event of its type”.

The gathering, which did not share this view, lost most of its committee as a result of the ousting.

This, in a nutshell, brings to the forefront

State must act on ice HAVING spent eight months as chair of a joint parliamentary committee enquiring into the supply and use of methamphetamines in Victoria, particularly ice, I am well aware of the impact this insidious drug has on our society.

Methamphetamine has been around a long time and was used by the Germans in World War II to keep soldiers alert and stimulated. The powerful derivative, crystal meth, or ice, now creates harm that our front-line services are grappling to deal with.

The potency and profitability of trading ice has seen its increased importation from Asia and domestic manufacturing at its highest level.

Last September the committee tabled its report, containing 1000 pages of investigative evidence together with 54 recommendations for State Government.

As Victoria’s second biggest city, Geelong urgently needs regional rehabilitation centres and detoxification clinics to meet the increasing demand for the long-term rehabilitation of ice addicts.

We need investment in education and training along with community support and action plans to help in dealing with this parasitical drug. A prevention model similar to New Zealand’s would be a smart start.

In short, the parliamentary committee recommended a whole-of-government approach to the problems associated with ice.

I am pleased Ken Lay, National Ice Taskforce

chair, sees the Victorian report as a basis for a national response.

I now call on the Andrews Government to implement the committee's recommendations as a matter of urgency.

Worthy but unhelpful GARY Oraniuk is pursuing a worthy cause, looking for unsatisfactory vaccinations if he can find any (Letters, 22 May).

It's just a pity he has nothing good to say about vaccinations' success in saving millions of lives worldwide every year, or about the eight million people walking today because of polio vaccination, or the tragedy of 1.7 million unvaccinated children under five dying annually from vaccine-preventable diseases.

er than a productive modern coal-burning system.

Solar power might be okay for those with bank balances healthy enough to cover their roofs with panels but has Mr Adamson tallied up the cost if every home owner did so? We would also be looking at exorbitant costs to service these units every 10 years or so.

The cost of power would never be so drastic with a coal or atomic power stations.

I support the Independent for encouraging readers to think for themselves, especially those finding the rubbish about carbon dioxide to be fraudulent.

Noah bit about climate THE following summarises a lecture by Professor Noah Tall on the subject of climate change.

Nothing is static in this field; our world is continually moving toward or away from a series of ice ages.

Trees influence climate change. Young forests or plantations produce much more oxygen and consume and convert much more carbon dioxide than old-growth trees, which have done their work and are ready to retire.

In the past, clouds of debris from passing comets and dust from meteorites collided with Earth, shrouding the planet and causing it to experience a cooling-off period. Likewise, man-made pollutants in our atmosphere can actually reflect sunrays back into space.

Volcanoes, which unleash destructive effects worldwide, are not all bad news. When Krakatoa erupted in 1883, destroying itself to sea level, the resulting ash cloud circled the world in 17 days, cooling Earth's temperature by many degrees.

Now Earth is warming again and Krakatoa is nearing its time for another big blow.

Prof Tall's concluding remarks were: "Although we should do all we can to reduce pollution and preserve our planet, we must question whether current climate fluctuations are man-made. After all, there were no fetid, belching industries, highly civilised cities or huge herds of cows around when the ocean rose to isolate Tasmania or when Australia's inland sea became a desert.

KEVIN Bloody Wilson’s formula for making people laugh is dead simple and something most Aussies will understand perfectly well.

“Just get pissed,” he bellows over the phone uproariously between expletives.

“I stayed pissed, that’s the formula, get f.....g drunk. And if I’m ever labouring for material I bring my mates around and steal their stuff.”

What might otherwise be a copyright nightmare – his mates don’t usually recall the material they’ve given him – works just perfectly for Wilson.

That and the typical Aussie diffidence toward authority of all kinds.

“We have a unique sense of humour, it’s totally irreverent,” Wilson said.

“Things can be completely f....d up and the rest of the world will be in mourning but in Australia we’ll be cracking cans of piss and making jokes about it.”

Wilson, who’s bringing his brand of irreverence to North Geelong's Sphinx Hotel on 20 June in a tour called his Helping Prevent Global Boring, is a grand stickler for such traditions.

He won’t have any truck with political correctness and delights in tearing down anything remotely resembling shibboleths across religion, politics, sex, race – the list goes on a bit.

A focus on MS

Dizziness, numbness, spasticity, pain, loss of balance, blurred vision, brain fog, changes in body temperature, fatigue.

Those are just some of the challenges daily facing folks unlucky enough to have multiple sclerosis.

But sufferers and their carers know that to get the message across to the rest of the world can be tough, which is what an exhibition of photographs at Deakin University’s Waterfront Kitchen hopes to address.

The showcase features the work of nine photographers who were each paired with a person with MS. The images are eye-catching, notably one of Australian come-

dian Tim Ferguson surrounded by banana peels to depict the slippery prospects he faces every time he tries to walk.

Professor Susan Balandin, chair in disability and inclusion at Deakin, said the exhibition was about encouraging understanding.

“This exhibition uses an innovative medium for promoting understanding of a condition that may not be obvious but nevertheless has a high impact on those who live with MS and their families,” she said.

“Deakin University is delighted to have the opportunity to assist in raising community awareness about a disability that often is poorly understood.”

The exhibition closes Monday.

Have a go with Joe’s tax break

THE “have a go” federal budget earlier this year contains a generous offer for small businesses with a turnover of less than $2 million.

Businesses owners can buy capital items worth up to $20,000 and write-off the cost immediately instead of depreciating assets over a period of years.

And it applies to every single purchases of capital equipment that meets the criteria.

Treasurer Joe Hockey says the incentive is designed to encourage small businesses to “have a go” in an effort to grow the economy.

The $20,000 instant asset write-off is available immediately and lasts until 30 June 2017.

The tax break applies to businesses that can demonstrate ongoing activity via quarterly Business Activity Statements.

Examples of items that qualify include new kitchen equipment or new tables and chairs for cafes, new tools for tradies, business software and a computer for the home office.

Cars and vans, kitchens or machinery - in fact any asset involved in running a business - under $20,000 is immediately 100 per cent tax-deductible.

Assets costing more than $20,000 are not eligible for the instant tax write-off, but they can still be fully written off over a longer period.

Any assets over $20,000 can be added together and be depreciated at the same rate and the value of a pool of assets below $20,000 can be immediately deducted as well.

And the items don’t even have to be brand new second-hand items are also eligible.

CANBERRA’S move to kickstart small business across the Geelong region - and the nation - have been welcomed by economic observers and industry bodies.

The budget included several measures aimed squarely at boosting investment, sales and safeguarding and creating jobs.

Chief among them is an immediate tax deduction for assets costing less than $20,000, for small businesses with an annual turnover of $2 million or less.

With small business the biggest employer in Australia, the intent of the deduction is clear: boost confidence and boost business growth.

As every entrepreneur large or small knows, confidence is critical to healthy business. Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) has welcomed the accelerated depreciation rules.

VECCI said the move, and others within the federal budget, acknowledged the importance of small business.

The initiatives offers lower costs, stimulated investment and jobs growth as outcomes.

Other measures in the budget included: a 1.5 per cent corporate tax cut for small businesses with an annual turnover of less than $2 million; and a five per cent tax discount up to $1000 a year for unincorporated small businesses with an annual turnover of less than $2 million.

Local councils alliance body G21 - taking in Geelong, Surf Coast, Colac-Otway, Golden Plains and Queenscliff municipalities - has also welcomed the incentives for small-to-medium sized business.

G21 says they came at an ideal time in the region’s economic evolution.

Tough stretch for Cats bite

GEELONG is in for a tough stretch, travelling twice in three weeks while working in back-to-back sixday breaks to boot.

Coach Chris Scott acknowledged the challenge but said it wouldn’t change the Cats’ approach to facing West Coast in Sunday’s game at Domain Stadium.

“We have a relatively tough fortnight post the game,” he told this week’s media conference.

“But we won’t be taking it easy leading into the game because we have a tough fortnight post the game.

“We’ve known the fixture since it came out and have been planning around it.”

In fact, the break following the West Coast game is in reality only five days since it’s scheduled as the final match of the round.

The team then spends most of Monday travelling home before fronting Essendon the following Saturday.

After that Geelong backs up against the Power at Adelaide Oval on a Friday night.

And the Cats have to wait until the second of the bye weeks for a rest before heading back to South Australia to take on Adelaide.

At first glance Geelong’s challenge against West Coast in its own nest appears formidable.

Second on the ladder and posting impressive stats across a number of categories, the Eagles have been one of the surprise packets of the season.

Scott’s own observations of West Coast showed it was a tough team to beat.

“They’re six and two for a reason,” he said.

“Their midfield is getting a lot of the ball and when they don’t get the ball they’re pressuring the opposition pretty well.

“They’ve got a star-studded forward line, which means if their midfield dominates and gives them a lot of supply they’re going to be hard to beat.

“The challenge is to reverse that and put their defenders under pressure and prevent the ball from getting to their gun forwards.”

Closer inspection of the Eagle’s record shows that the bulk of their wins have come against lesser opponents on exposed form so far, making assessment difficult.

AFL ‘nearly left 2015 totally in dark’ GEELONG’S lack of 2015 night games was the result of an AFL fixturing bungle, Cats chief Brian Cook revealed at a Geelong Business Breakfast this week.

The Cats realised only a day before the fixture’s release that the AFL had failed to schedule any night matches in Geelong, he said.

“We never get told what the fixtures are until the day before

the release of the fixture. You hear bits and pieces and put a picture together,“ Cook told the breakfast.

“I rang the AFL and spoke to the fixturing manager. He’s very talented but he made an error.”

Cook said the AFL initially refused to believe him and had to check before admitting its mistake.

“I said, ‘You’ve got to give us some night games’. Two or three hours later he rang back

“The season has a little bit to go before we settle down and see where everyone’s at.

“I think this week will be a pretty good opportunity for both teams to get a bit of a clearer picture.

“I suspect it’s going to be a season with momentum shifts.”

North facing South in battle of NPL polar opposites

By JOSOP ZILIC SOUTH Melbourne awaits North Geelong on Friday night in an NPL battle of massive proportions.

South Melbourne suffered its first loss of the season last week, going down 2-0 to a resurging Oakleigh. The hosts will have reinforced striking power this week with the signing of Andy Bevin from Seattle Sounders.

South hasn’t been as free-flowing as 2014 and has had a few close calls in recent weeks prior to its Oakleigh loss.

North, although unable to break its losing streak, has been battling hard and dominating matches for lengthy periods but needs to do more in front of goal.

Last Saturday’s 1-0 loss at home to Bentleigh was another example of its scoring issue.

The match was highly physical as the yellow card count amounted to eight, five of which were to the visitors.

North had its best opportunity with 10 minutes

left in the half when Darren Lewis found Michael Anderson in the box. Anderson spun and beat the keeper only to over-hit the shot into the bar.

The second half had just begun when Bentleigh pounced on a turnover in defence. The resulting long ball found Thurtell who caught the North Geelong defence looking for an offside call but the player was in the clear and slotted his shot past the oncoming Zilic.

New Warriors signing Gareth Richards was introduced with 25 minutes left, coming on for Yusuf Yusuf, to provide a target for the home side. He worked hard for his time on the park, even coming close to benefitting from a deep ball to the back post only to get shut down by a well-drilled Bentleigh defence.

Warriors coach Micky Colina noted that sides like Bentliegh needed just a single opening to punish opponents, “and that ends up being the difference”.

“We, on the other hand, need to take a page out their book.”

KEVIN Hunter set out from Apollo Bay on the hunt for southern bluefin tuna in calm conditions on Sunday.

After covering some ground his loaded up and screamed off with a tuna of 11kg. Kevin fished well into the afternoon but was unable to locate more tuna, although he found some bait schools at Little Reef.

Paul Blackborrow and son fished Port Fairy on Monday, trolling in 48m for a catch of two tuna, the biggest 15kg.

Daniel Baden and I fished Port Fairy on Sunday, eventually locating surface-feeding tuna on the east side of Lady Julia Percy Island. After numerous casts and lure changes Daniel hooked a 15kg fish on a Sea Iron Pelacus.

I saw other anglers achieving similar results on small-profile lures and at the end of the day while cleaning the tuna we found baitfish of a similar size in the stomach contents.

Closer to home, Craig Varker and John Vannhold fished around Royal Geelong Yacht club where they experienced outstanding Australian salmon action.

Casting soft plastics LURE ACTION: Daniel from their boat hard up Baden with a Port Fairy against the wall of the tuna. yacht club, they boated fish to 2.5kg, with Craig’s efforts winning Petrel Angling Club’s competition for the weekend.

Anglers fishing wide off St Leonards found reasonable numbers of gummy sharks to 15kg. Fresh baits such as salmon fillet and squid has proven most effective.

Swan Bay’s main channel produced smaller model gummies to 6kg.

The Barwon River estuary continued fishing well, with mulloway to 80cm taken on live baits and bream averaging 35cm landed up around the Sheepwash.

On the freshwater front, Wurdee Boluc Reservoir produced brown and rainbow trout along with big redfin to 50cm. Tim Beusmans put in a few hours fishing mudeye from the main rock wall, landing a big buck brown trout around 3kg.

Bradley Cox cast Fish Arrow soft plastics around the reservoir margins, eventually catching four redfin to 45cm.

Duane Tribe made the most of the remaining trout season, travelling up to the Thornton River in the Goulburn Valley. Wading the river casting his fly rod, Duane caught plenty of browns and rainbows to 30cm.

Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree fished well for anglers casting shallow-diving hard-body lures such as Norries Laydowns for trout. Fish to 2.5kg were caught around the areas with less weed, while mudeye fished under bubble floats from the shore also took trout.

Next week should present options for gummy shark in the deep water out from St Leonards or inside Swan Bay, especially at night on a run-in tide.

Freshwater anglers should persist with Wurdee Boluc Reservoir and Lake Purrumbete because some trophy brown trout should be on the move.
