EMU Swamp Dam is at risk of never being built unless council fast-tracks a business case for the $80 million water supply.

Eight months after the dam gained federal approval, the project appears to have stalled, with Southern Downs Regional Council allocating insufficient funds to conduct a swift business plan required to secure multi-million dollar government funding.

Federal Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott has delivered a blunt message to the council - get on with the business proposal or risk being turned down on funds for a dam intended to serve as an economic lifeline for the Stanthorpe region.

The SDRC has budgeted $10,000 to begin door knocking state and federal governments for capital so far, with a business plan estimated to cost at least four times that amount.

“I would urge council to complete it’s Emu Swamp Dam business case as soon as practically possible,” Mr Scott said.

Securing government funding is a highly competitive environment, and projects that drag the chain with submissions risk being disregarded over others,” Mr Scott said.

“Government keeps grinding on both state and federal levels and there will be other communities that also want funding for a dam project submitting business plans and showing commitment.”

The co-ordinator general Barry Broe approved the dam’s construction in September last year, and Mr Scott said council’s next phase didn’t require many months to complete.

“It doesn’t need to take a long time to get a business proposal out, this dam has been 20 years in the making, so most of the hard feasibility work has been done.”

The SDRC’s case is required to set out how the dam will provide water security for the region and supplement the economy by providing water for the horticultural and agriculture sectors.

Mayor Peter Blundell remains tight-lipped on whether SDRC intends to prioritise the business case in its upcoming budget, after admitting last week that council debt had blown out to $31 million.

Cr Blundell this week declined to comment on the dam’s progress, despite previously claiming that it was one of the most significant projects in the SDRC’s history.

By SONJA KOREMANS THE Darling Downs is home to Australia’s fattest and most inactive residents, research shows - but our couch potatoes shouldn’t shoulder all the blame.

The region is hardly brimming with free community fitness facilities to entice a healthier population.

So some of the onus is on councils to provide more bike paths, walkways, outdoor fitness equipment, fitness trails and public exercise classes.

Warwick community health advocate Johno Felton has called on the Southern Downs Regional Council not to ignore the obesity findings released this month.

Heart Foundation statistics show that more than 44 percent of Darling Downs residents are obese, with nearly threequarters of the region’s population not engaging in sufficient physical activity.

“The only way to beat obesity, depression and a whole range of health issues is to keep fit, and if council could give us more bike tracks, walk ways and national park paths that is a good start,” Mr Felton said.

The health lecturer and director of the Warwick Suicide Prevention urged Mayor Peter Blundell and SDRC councillors at a community meeting in Warwick last week to take advantage of grants available to build cycling infrastructure and improve existing fitness facilities.

The Queensland State Government provides council with grants for bikeway planning, design and construction.

But Mr Felton said council noted it did not have a designated grant officer to pursue the funding option.

“The scheme has been extremely popular in Queensland since it began last year, and has helped boost the state’s immunisation rates,” Mr Hwang said.

Mr Hwang said he had vaccinated about 140 people in the past month at the pharmacy.

Jodie Barrett from Warwick said her role as a childcare worker required her to be up to date on vaccinations.

“It’s inconvenient waiting 10 days just to get into a doctor, particularly before winter when there is a rush on flu vaccinations,” Ms Barrett said.

“This has been much simpler.”

Immunisation at a pharmacy takes about 20 minutes and patients are required to complete a consent form before the jab.

Chemists now offer in-house immunisation for a fraction of the cost of a doctor’s visit as part of the growing medical care role being undertaken by pharmacists.

Pharmacist Phillip Hwang of John Duggan Warwick said no prescription was required and it was an on-the-spot service.

That’s good news for local residents who can wait up to two weeks to get in to see their GP. “For pharmacies, it’s not a cost-making exercise, we only make about $7 on each vaccination, so it’s really about offering our customers an alternative to waiting to see a doctor,” Mr Hwang said.

“Otherwise, they have to go to their GP, come back to us with the vaccination script, and then go back to the GP to have it administered.“ More than 550 community pharmacists have been trained to

Water principal Lex Applegren from Jacobs engineering consultants said experts with environmental economics, water and accounting expertise would be required to work on the council’s submission.

“There are lots of things to tick off for this dam, but until you have that business case document to find the money, it’s

hard to achieve anything else,“ Mr Applegren said.

Jacobs, which has briefed council on the ins and outs of the dam, estimates a business plan would cost at least $40,000.

Southern Downs councillor Vic Pennisi, who has been heavily involved in the dam project for many years, said a business plan was progressing.

“We have already started down the path of developing a pitch to government, we haven’t decided who will put the final bits of information together but, we have a number of stakeholders at the table,“ Mr Pennisi said.

DRIVERS should pay greater attention to road signs and get off their phones.

That’s the warning police have issued for Warwick drivers ahead of Fatality Free Friday, a national community awareness campaign tomorrow aimed at cutting the road toll.

Warwick police acting officer in charge Senior Sergeant Shane Reid encouraged local drivers to make the Fatality Free Friday pledge to be more safety conscious behind the wheel.

Sen Sgt Reid said Warwick motorists regularly drive straight through stop and giveway signs, putting themselves and others at serious risk of injury and death.

They are also guilty of ignoring road rules around mobile phone use, particularly on Friday and weekends when social activities beckon, he said.

“At the end of the week, people start organising their weekends and it’s then that drivers are more likely to paying less attention to road rules and text and talk on their phones while driving,“ Sen Sgt Reid said.

“Warwick also has a lot of busy intersections in the CBD, drivers become frustrated having to wait and make mistakes they normally wouldn’t, leading to accidents.“ The intersections at Dragon and Wood Streets, Percy and Palmerin streets, and Victoria and Albion Streets are the city’s most dangerous

Motorcyclist airlifted THE RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter airlifted six people involved in car accidents across southern Queensland on the weekend, including a Warwick man.

The man in his twenties suffered multiple injuries on Sunday when his dirt bike collided with a tree on a property at Warwick.

He was airlifed from Warwick Hospital to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane.

He is in a stable condition.

Drug bust TWO men have been charged with a series of drug-related offences in Stanthorpe.

The five charges, including possession of drugs and possession of utensils, came after search warants were executed on two properties at Mt Tully and Stanthorpe. The men were charged on Friday.

SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has eased water restrictions with immediate effect after recent spells of rain helped stabilise Leslie Dam levels.

Council’s director of Engineering Services Peter See said the high level restrictions for Warwick, Yangan, Allora and the villages of Pratten, Leyburn, Dalveen and Karara were imposed in November 2014 when Leslie Dam capacity fell below 30 per cent.

“Warwick and its surrounding villages will be joining Stanthorpe, Wallangarra and Killarney which reverted to permanent measures in January this year.

The recent rains have kept Storm King Dam and Beehive Dam levels at 100 per cent.

Groizard, 28, and Michael Holman, 32, drove through the city with their baby on board in October last year, speeding, tailgaiting and driving on the wrong side of the road.

The couple from Aberdare in NSW each received suspended jail sentences this week.

The court heard Groizard - who was the driver of the car - suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, and Holman also suffered from mental health issues at the time.

Groizard was sentenced to 12 months' jail, suspended for two years. Holman was sentenced to three months jail, suspended for 12 months.

After months of planning, dreaming and spending, thousands of students will soon celebrate the Academy Awards of their school life with the region’s senior formals kicking off in July.

Some students started saving months ago for all the must-haves - evening gown, tux, hair stylists, spray tan, make-up, photos, limousines and tickets.

Warwick Senior High School student Chloe Smyth has been planning her formal since last year, and, by her own admission, plans to be Cinderella on a shoestring.

It has been a lesson in budgeting for the teen who has taken on two

jobs and devised a savings plan to fund her rite of passage on 31 July.

“Like most of my friends, I will be looking at ways I can save on all the expenses that go into the night,” Chloe said.

Recent figures show that, on average, Australian girls spend $1500 each on the event while boys were spending $850.

But Chloe said local students were more likely to keep their budget well below that.

“Some girls do spend $1000 and upwards on their dresses but not many, it’s actually considered cooler not to overspend on your formal,“ Chloe said.

“My dress will be a few hundred dollars but I’ve made sure it’s

a style that I can wear again when I leave school.“ Chloe’s cost cutting includes sharing a photographer with other students, doing her own nails, shopping around for an affordable hairdresser, and travelling in a family or friend’s car rather than a limo to the venue.

“Some girls are getting their older sisters to do their hair and make-up to save money and are also sharing a photographer as those are the extras that can cost of hundreds of dollars.“ Scots PGC College student Kate Worth stuck to a $300 budget for her debut dress this month.

Kate said students who splashed out on extravagant debut and for-

mal dresses were discreet.

“A lot of girls keep the cost of their deb and formal dresses to themselves so they don’t upset the feelings of another girl if her dress was cheaper.”

Kate Strudwick, owner of the Wow Factor in Warwick, said girls were spending between $200 and $600 on formal dresses this year.

“Many girls these days pay for their own dresses so they aren’t spending at the upper end.”

Students were regularly popping into her shop this month to finalise their dress choices, she said.

“They have been coming in each week to pay a deposit down and it’s lovely to see that sort of sensible spending approach to a formal.”

Ditch the itch PETS on the Darling Downs have the unenviable reputation of being the itchiest critters in Queensland.

Vets believe cases of dog and cat allergies are trending upwards, particularly on the Southern Downs where extensive grass varieties, weather extremes and flea care complacency lead to excessive scratching, red skin, hot spots, hair loss, itchy ears and runny eyes in cats and dogs all year around.

Warwick vet Roslyn Lee from Town and Country Vets said this time of year in particular is tough on pets.

“Most people associate summer with pet allergies but winter itch is a real problem for pets in the region,“ Ms Lee said.

Unlike the summer itchies which are usually caused by fleas or mold, winter itch is a result of dry skin and dust, amplified by heated air in homes and the low humidity levels in the air, she said.

“Flea prevention all year around and regular baths with mild soothing shampoo are the most effective and affordable precautions you can take.“ Fran Griffin of Total Dog Grooming in Warwick said small breeds with long hair such as terriers can have a predisposition to skin problems.

“They are closer to the ground so are picking up more allergens and dust in their coat.

“Keeping the hair around their paws short and bathing the dog regularly in cool water can provide temporary relief,“ Ms Griffin said.

She suggests patting the dog with a towel or using a hair drying on a cool - non heat setting.

“Heat and rubbing the dog’s skin will only increase your dog’s itch,“ Ms Griffin said.

Winter pet care Humidifiers: The air in most homes becomes dry in the winter months - this removes moisture from the dog’s skin and coat but a humidifier will replace the moisture lost in the air.

Correct shampoo: Human shampoos are formulated for our skin which has a different pH to pets and can result in itchy flaky skin. Use a mild dog or cat shampoos.

Pat dry: Dry your dog with towels instead of a hair-dryer.

Brushing: Brushing the coat improves the circulation which, in turn, improves the coat and the skin. Also, a clean coat will hold heat better.

Clipping: Leave your pets coat a little longer in the winter but continue to keep hair short around itch prone area such as the paws and hindquarters.

Coat up: If we are going outside we put an extra layer on and the same can be applied to our dogs - a coat will give him extra protection from dry air and dust.

He professed our standard of living was too high and his high handed advice, would have, if followed, taken away all aid to our suffering unemployed.

Surely circumstances change with the times!

After all when England became part of the European Common Market our position must justifiably become more singular.

Personally God Save the Queen to me is asking God to look after one person, what of the rest of England where hundreds now are homeless?

Also I have always read our Diggers were more apt to sing Waltzing Matilda. Surely we have come of age and can honour our heroes with our own national anthem; after all, our wonderfully unique Aussie characteristics evolved from our determination to not be beaten by bureaucratic aristocracy i.e. Eureka, shearers, miners and so

on, all through our history.

This invasion of the prince’s privacy is unprecedented.

Would anyone like to have their personal correspondence to members of parliament made public years after it was written?

What it does demonstrate, if anyone cares to read the released documents, is that the prince, Britain’s future king, is interested in decisions of government, and looks like he would be a handson king if ever he sits on the throne.

A king that takes an active interest in the affairs of state might not be quite what the established parliamentarians would want.

However, it is what the nation needs.

A hereditary monarchy has a vested interest in the nation’s future and the viability of future generations, and his own descendants who will one day inherit the throne.

THOSE who love a juicy, mouthwatering steak are in the best spot in Australia to chow down.

A Darling Downs Wagyu has been crowned the best steak in the nation at the Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show’s beef and lamb competition last week.

The meat produced by Australian Agricultural Company (AACo) beat 41 other entries in the grass fed, grain fed, Wagyu (marble score of 1-5) and Wagyu (marble score of 6+) categories.

Chief Judge Elaine Millar said the winning steak was a standout and proved that Queensland produces some of the best beef in the world.

“The Grand Champion AACo Darling Downs Wagyu ticked all the boxes due to its lasting juiciness, silky buttery texture and stunning sweet and delicate caramel flavours,” she said.

“Both the commentary and the incredibly close scoring indicated that our Australian beef is escalating in quality each year.”

Australia’s best lamb was taken out for the second year in a row by Tasmanian Royal for its branded lamb product, sold by Melrose Wholesale Meats based in Morningside, Brisbane.

The competition is regarded as the most coveted and comprehensive of its kind in Australia

Troy’s telling tales in song

By TANIA PHILLIPS TROY Cassar-Daly is a story teller but while some of us tell our stories on paper, Troy’s stories are his songs, his writing implement his guitar and his journal is a stage and he’s bringing his stories old and new to Warwick early next month.

It’s a prospect that excites the country music star and brings plenty of memories.

“My grandad used to come up to Warwick for the rodeo each year, and every time I visit I feel him with me here,” he reminisced.

“Our shows have always been warmly received over so many years, and I can’t wait to share this one with everyone in beautiful Warwick.

“Please come and join us, we’d love to see you” The boy from Grafton has just released his ninth studio album an album he is proud of, an album that tells some distinct and wonderful stories with a little help from his friend.

And he’s bringing the show to the Warwick Town Hall on Wednesday 10 June.

We’re a stop in his massive national tour, but we’re a stop that he always enjoys and he’s looking forward to bringing his old favou-

rites and brand new tunes from his Freedom Ride album.

“I had an empty canvas sitting at home and wanted to paint an interesting picture for everyone with songs,” he said.

“I loved co-writing with old friends again on this album and the themes we looked at stretched from one end of the country to another.

“There are a lot of people’s lives woven through these tunes, and I hope they use this collection of songs as a mirror and see themselves in a few of the stories I’ve touched on.”

Just talking to him, you can hear how much he loved preparing for this album - and it’s kind of nice to hear someone still enjoying what they do after 25 years at the top of their game.

Perhaps, the most potent image of all from this album is the title track Freedom Ride written with Paul Kelly - it’s the summer of 1965 and Charles Perkins is joined by a bunch of young students.

They’re winding their way across NSW on a confronting and courageous quest for equality, looking for answers that would take decades to unfold. That are still unfolding to this day.

“I became aware of the Free-

dom Ride here in Australia while in high school in Grafton,” he said.

“As part of Aboriginal studies, I did a project about Charles Perkins and the people who rode on the Freedom Ride bus, who were from all walks of life.

“Charlie was a hero to me because he talked about equality, and improving the lives and conditions of Indigenous Australians living out in the rural regions and cities. He became a defiant voice that called for change in Australia and his achievements were many.

“Paul and I wrote this small version of what must have been a huge adventure for the freedom riders; going from town to town, learning the truth about how Indigenous life in this country could be brought into line with mainstream Australia. Charlie changed views and perceptions with his passion, and to me was an important part of our progression as a people and as a nation”.

THE YMCA is committed to providing the best service possible to the local community, according to manager of the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC) Frederic Meyer.

“We have identified the variation of water temperature in our pools as one of the issues that requires attention,” Mr Meyer said.

As a first step to assist with this issue, YMCA has pur-

chased four new pool covers for the 25m pool to reduce the loss of heat overnight.

“This will assist us in reducing our gas costs until the new heat exchanger operates properly,” Mr Meyer said.

The pools in the main hall are heated to 29 degrees while the hydrotherapy is currently at 34 degrees, offering a pleasant experience to our customers in winter.

“Until end of August, we’ve

boosted our offer for casual visitors. A family can use the pool for only $10 on weekends,” he said.

“If you pay your individual entry on Saturday we offer a free voucher to come back on Sunday.

“If you’re visiting WIRAC with a friend, you only need to pay one entry on either Saturday or Sunday.

“Similar offers exist on the weekend for casual gym users.”

A cuppa with the caring kind

A large assortment of local community groups met for the Endeavour Foundation’s Biggest Morning Tea event on Wendesday morning.

Representatives from U3A, Warwick’s Veterans Support and Advocacy, Blue Care, Warwick State High and numerous other groups were on hand to raise money and have a bit of fun.

Residents of Milpera House provided some of the morning tea, cooking and icing some pretty impressive cupcakes and slices.

BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK You are famous for your wit, your thirst for knowledge, your leadership abilities and your quick bursts of temper - which subside as fast as they flare up. Some small personal sacrifices may lead to a steady series of financial gains over the next few months.

THE Broncos and Cowboys cemented their position as contenders for the 2015 premiership with wins in round 11.

Traditionally this is a tough time for these clubs with their top guns on Origin duty. Both teams showed that there is plenty of depth in their ranks this season with wins on the weekend. The Bunnies and Bulldogs also wrapped up wins amid more calls for a standalone State of Origin series.

Poor crowds and some uninspiring football have strengthened calls for a change to the Origin format.

The post-Origin games are perhaps the toughest to look at without knowing the outcome of Origin and if there will be injury concerns.

So with no real confidence, I have given the crystal ball a touch up and am hoping for the best.

Friday night the Panthers host the Eels in the opening game of the post Origin round.

In round 10, a late Matt Moylan field goal gave the Panthers an unlikely win at Brookvale.

The Panthers have struggled with a host of injuries to key players but with the mercurial form of Moylan and the return of some of their roster they are beginning to show some authority in the competition, The Eels’ woes continued in round 11 with a narrow loss to the Bunnies. Both sides struggled in the wet conditions in what was a lacklustre game.

The Eels have failed to nail a conversion in their past two games, and it has cost them victory.

This was a game that was there for their taking as the Bunnies struggled without key personnel.

The Panthers have snuck into the top eight and look likely winners here. Expect to see them clawing their way further into the top eight as the weeks progress.

The Titans face a big task when they host the Bunnies at Cbus Stadium on Saturday. In round 10, they were involved in a thrilling game against the Sharks where only a point separated the teams at the end of the game. Unfortunately for Titans fans, the result did not fall in their favour and they were beaten 23-22 in a golden point thriller.

The make-up of the Bunnies team will depend on Origin. Greg Inglis was floored by illness early in the Origin camp, spending several days in hospital and whether he bounces back from Origin to play here is doubtful and Adam

Reynolds is sidelined with a serious thumb injury.

The Rabbitohs ended their dismal record without Reynolds when they edged out the Eels. Despite their best efforts to get beaten, the Bunnies hung on for a win. Although they were missing Inglis and Reynolds and the conditions were dreadful, it was a poor performance from Souths. A win is a win but the Bunnies look to have plenty of work to do. Cbus Stadium has not always been a happy hunting ground for the Bunnies and that could well continue this weekend. A Titans win is not out of the question although they will have to do it without their enforcer Greg Bird.

The clash between the Raiders and the Broncos looks one of the highlights of round 12.

In an amazing game where 75 points were scored, Canterbury hung on to snatch a win over the Raiders last Sunday. It was a crazy rollercoaster ride for fans of both sides. Canberra came back from an almost impossible 26 points to nil to almost pull off an upset. It was an amazing second half of football where the Raiders five eighth Blake Austen and Shaun Fensom showcased their talents. Unfortunately for their fans, the Raiders could not put the game to bed when scores were locked up late in the game.

Many expected the Broncos to struggle against the Knights without their Origin stars.

The Knights, however, had their own problems.

They lost back-rower Joseph Tapine to a back injury in the warm and Kurt Gidley did not return from a concussion in the first half.

Broncos’ five-eighth Anthony Milford was outstanding and orchestrated a memorable win for the club. Milford and fullback Jordan Kahu terrorised the Knights who dominated early but fell away late as the game progressed. It is likely Brisbane will start without some of their Origin contingent but they have great depth and can add another win to their tally here.

Kick of the match could likely come from Raiders coach Ricky Stuart who showed he has lost none of his kicking skills last weekend on the sideline.

The Cowboys win in round 11 was a real boost for a club that has traditionally struggled at this time of the year. The Cowboys toughed out a win in a dour contest against the Tigers. It was far from pretty but the two points will be important as the season progresses. The Cowboys defence was outstanding to keep the Tigers scoreless.

This weekend they host the Sea Eagles at

1300Smiles and welcome back their Origin players. The Sea Eagles are desperate to turn their fortunes around as they wallow in unfamiliar territory at the bottom end of the ladder. Rumours that Trent Barrett is set to join the Eagles coaching ranks continue to gain momentum but their issues run deeper than coaching. If Daley Cherry Evans does not play, Eagles fans should prepare for more pain.

Across the ditch, the Warriors host the Knights at Mt Smart Stadium. The Warriors come into this game after a bye last weekend. With their limited exposure to Origin, they should field a fresh and fit side. In their last game, they snatched a win from the hapless Eels.

Their opponents here, the Knights were hammered by the Broncos on Monday night and although Beau Scott returns from Origin duty they have serious injuries to a host of players. It is hard to see any joy here for the Knights.

The Dragons and Sharks go head to head at Jubilee Oval on Sunday afternoon. Cronulla has been playing some entertaining football recently.

After being overlooked by the Blues for Origin, Luke Lewis will be looking to prove selectors made the wrong choice. Jack Bird and Valentine Holmes have both been outstanding in recent weeks for the Sharks. The Dragons are defying all the pre-season dire predictions and are challenging in the top four. Depending on the outcome of other games this weekend, they could find themselves at the top of the table with a win here.

The Roosters and Storm wrap up Round 12 on Monday night at Allianz.

Barring Origin injuries, both should be almost at full strength for this game. Both sides had wins in round 10 and enjoyed a bye last weekend.

Melbourne is such a professional outfit, it is tough to tip against them however with not a lot of confidence I am leaning slightly towards the Roosters. Like so much this round, a lot will depend on the Origin fallout.

By JOYCE MARSH (WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT) THREE members of the Kyogle Red Cross, president Val Ferris, secretary Julie Kirkpatrick and Gillian Allerton, were at the Woodenbong Central School on Thursday 14 May to present prizes to primary students.

These students had competed in the Anzac Day colouring-in competition and, according to the three judges, the standard was very high.

Prior to the presentations, Ms Ferris spoke to the students about the great work Mr Simpson and his donkey had done moving injured soldiers to safety in WWI. She then donated three books titled Mr Simpson and His Donkey to the primary school.

Then came the big moment, presenting the prizes to the winners: Kindergarten - Elke Johnston; Grade 1 - Lucy Ross; 2 - Noah Osborough; 3 - Jhett Wadsworth; 4 - Chloe Newman with highly commended Rose Wilson; 5 - Shiloh Williams; 6 - Jemima Lee with highly commended Bessie Wilson.

LEAGUE followers in the district were saddened to learn on Monday of the death of one of the true characters to have played the game in Stanthorpe, Greg Appleton.

Appo, as he was affectionately known, had progressed from the junior ranks at Norths Devils in Brisbane, and when he came to Stanthorpe in the mid 70’s it did not take him long to make his mark on the footy field.

As Gremlins coach in 1978, Appo took the Stanthorpe Gremlins A Grade side to a memorable premiership win in the Warwick and District competition.

This week after hearing of his death, captain of the 1978 side Wayne Cosmo recalled fondly the many games played alongside Appo.

He reminisced that throughout most of the ’78 season, Appo one of the toughest players going round, who had played most of that season with broken bones in his hand.

Gremlins president Norman Crisp was another who fondly remembers playing with Appleton. “You knew he would always give 110 per cent on the field.

“He was a no-nonsense player. He will be remembered as a tough uncompromising country footballer,” Crisp said.

There are plenty of us who agree. Greg Appleton was a great bloke both off and on the field. He played hard and partied hard. He certainly knew how to celebrate a win or a loss in style.

After his football career, Appo branched out into hotel work and eventually bought the freehold of the Yarraman Hotel.

Our paths crossed again a few years ago when he leased the Texas pub. While he was not directly involved in rugby league at that time, he always cast a weather eye over the BRL competition and especially the Gremlins.

Appo suffered some serious health issues in the past 10 or so years and he approached them in much the same way he did his football career. Uncompromising giving 110 per cent.

Appo had many close ties in the area, and his death has come as a real shock to many of us, but he has left us with great memories. He will remain part of the Gremlins’ story and will never be forgotten.

I know that his teammates and many friends join me in passing on our condolences to Consie, Renae, Donna and his extended family.

RIP mate.

- Casey APPOINTMENT OF ENGLISH COACH A SURPRISE THE England Cricket Board has this week announced their new coach and while Australian Dizzy Gillespie was widely tipped to be the next English coach, the job has fallen to another Aussie, Trevor Bayliss.

The announcement of the NSW coach caught many in Australian Cricket by surprise.

In Bayliss, the ECB have opted for a traditionalist. Australians who know him describe him as a man from the old school who loves talking cricket over a beer. In much the same manner as Boof Lehmann, he believes players are at their best when they are relaxed and allowed to think for themselves.

“He gets the best out of his team. He is harsh but fair,” said Shane Warne.

Bayliss, 52, played for New South Wales as a middle-order batsman from 1985 to 1993 but never played international cricket.

As a coach, Bayliss has probably slipped under the radar of many but has a fine record.

Bayliss is a survivor in more ways than one.

He was coach of the Sri Lankan side and on the

team bus when attacked by terrorists in 2009 in Pakistan.

He is also well versed in the ways of the Aussie team. Last year, he helped steer the Aussies to a Twenty20 series win against South Africa while Darren Lehmann was taking a break.

Commentators and players alike say he likes the game to be played in the right spirit. He encourages teams to play an exciting brand of cricket and his methods work. Bayliss has won almost every trophy going. He has twice led New South Wales to the Sheffield Shield, in 2004 an 2014, and the ING Cup, Australia’s 50 over competition, is a double IPL winner with the Kolkata Knight Riders, led Sydney Sixers to the Big Bash title in 2012 and coached Sri Lanka for four years, culminating in a World Cup final in 2011.

Hopefully, the Ashes urn is one that will elude him, but his appointment is certainly good for English cricket and that can only be good for World Cricket.

BARRACLOUGH WIN NO SURPRISE AFTER four impressive rounds of golf, it was no surprise that Dylan Barraclough was named overall Stanthorpe Golf Club champion and Junior club champion. The talented teen led from the opening round, increasing his overall lead with each round gradually taking an unassailable lead.

Richard Reardon was the Overall Nett winner.

Other grades were more closely contested affairs. Bill Pyne played well to hold off the opposition in the B Grade Championship and Lance Eagle did the same to claim the C Grade Championship.

Nett events were won by Stephen Kay in A grade, Eric McLellan in B grade and Viv Thouard in C grade. The last man standing award for best nett Veterans went to Aaron Simmers. The final trophy, boys’ Junior nett went to Matthew Burgess. Matthew played all four rounds of the competition and returned consistent scores in each round. With a little more experience, Matthew will be challenging the leader’s board.

In Saturday’s event, sponsored by club Member, Geoff Patti, Lance Eagle returned best score of nett 68 on a countback to win the men’s event.

Mark Harris also returned nett 78 to take the runners-up spot.

The Ladies event went to Lyn Ludlow with nett 76 slightly ahead of runner-up Hannah Reeves with nett 78.

After four busy weeks of club championship golf this week, 4B aggregate stableford has been scheduled by the Stanthorpe Club and will be sponsored by the Spencer family.

A single stableford will be played with a draw for partners after the day’s play. This event has always created interest with everyone keen to learn the result of the draw. It is a shotgun start at 11.45am, and players are asked to register by 11.30am.

TREAT FOR MOTORCYCLE ENTHUSIASTS THERE is a real treat in store for Motorcycle racing enthusiasts next week.

Scott White competes in Australia’s premier drag racing series - the ANDRA Pro Stock Motorcycle championships and is currently ranked as the number two Australian Pro Stock Motorcycle Racer. On Wednesday (June 3) White, who hails from Darwin, will be making an appearance at Warwick Industrial Supplies in Warwick.

White, who is enroute to the Winter Nationals at Willowbank, will have his Pro Stock motorbike on display at WIS, Fitzroy Street. White will be available for a chat and perhaps a photo between 10am and 3pm.

ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS ALL roads lead to Wallangarra Golf Club for the Zone On Men’s championships. The changed format for Red Roosters Rumble is proving popular - (it is now round Monday to Friday). Doug Wilson is showing a bit of RRR form taking out the prize for the second consecutive week. It took only 19 points to win the pro shop booty. Keith Carney was runner-up with 17 points and Garry Adcock was the only run down with 16 points. Doug Wilson also grabbed the only pin and that was at nine.

The best play off against the best. The magnificent drew the Ridge in the first round and after a valiant battle went down 4/3. Not bad considering the Ridge has just won both division One and Two of the Darling Downs pennants. (Plenty of quality scratch/low marker players to choose from).

Borneo beat City in the first round leaving Warwick to play City in the second round. This was another tough contest. Warwick eventually went down 4/3. Congratulations to Tim Sutton (captain), Adrian Murphy, Shane McKenzie, Charlie Morrison, Nathan Jones, Jay Roberts and Dylan Barraclough who all played exceptionally well.

INGLEWOOD TWO DAY PISTOL EVENT THE Inglewood SSAA trial two day pistol event has been hailed a success with 28 competitors taking part over the two days. 25 metre standard Rimfire and Centrefire were held to allow competitors to shoot a different calibre/class over the one weekend.

Winners are grinners and Iain Bowen and Tom Donald were doing plenty of that.

In the Centrefire event, Iain Bowen defeated the experienced Tom Donald with Phil Neal placing third.

In the Rimfire event, experience came to the fore with Tom Donald taking out the major prize ahead of Andrew Clarke and Scott Johns.

With five Sundays in May, a working bee has been scheduled by the club for this weekend. However, there has already been plenty of work done in preparation. Corner posts have been erected for the new cover over the pistol bays and a dozer cleared firebreaks around the infrastructure. Still plenty to be done, and the club is hoping for plenty of support this weekend.

BIG NUMBERS FOR FRANK HODGSON MEMORIAL DAY NUMBERS swelled at the “Garra Golf Club last Saturday as a big field turned out to play in the Single Stableford Frank Hodgson Memorial Day. It is a popular day on the Wallangarra calendar and a fine score of 39 points was good enough for K. Williams to claim a win in the event. Chris Edwards finished in second place with P. Williams, K. Hines and A. Lutter all finishing on equal points in third place.

Sean Hampstead took the Pin shot on the third and Gary Sutcliffe hit one close on nine. It was another very successful day.

This Saturday the club has a 4BBB scheduled and on the club hosts the DDGA Zone 1 Championships with Tee off between 9.30am and 10.30am.

MONDAY’S OUT FOR HOOP RUNNERS HOOP runners were planning to add a Monday afternoon time slot to their schedule, but at this stage a long standing club ruling prevents Monday games. It is back to normal Wednesday mornings until an alternative to Monday can be found.

The organisers apologise to anyone who has been inconvenienced by this.

Last Wednesday, two short games were played followed by a longer game after the break. As all players get more experience under their belt, the games are becoming very keenly fought affairs.

In his first game back from a break, Bill scored “hoop in one”. Shirley Evans also added another to her tally.

With several players off travelling at the moment, only two games of association croquet were played last week. Margaret Dickenson and Grace Howard played Pat Schnoor. Pat won this match 26 -17. Margaret had a break of five and one of four but that was not enough to give the girls a win. Pat played well and had breaks of nine and seven.

In the other game, Val Shephard and Carol Verwey (21) defeated Andrea Denkewitz and Heather Widderick (19). It was a very competitive game. Val played well and had a break of four and Carol two breaks of two and one of three. Andrea had a break of four and Heather a break of two.

Stanthorpe have improved since that game, and if there is a threat in the competition to the Tigerettes it will come from the Stanthorpe girls. Should be another entertaining game SURGERY FOR GREMLIN STANTHORPE Gremlin’s player Jason Cobon suffered a nasty ankle injury at Killarney last weekend and has undergone surgery to repair the damage. Cobon who had earlier scored for the Gremlins came out of a tackle in all sorts of trouble, and was in severe pain until the arrival of the ambulance.

The injury is a blow to Cobon and the Gremlins as he has been in good form again this season. It is unclear at this early stage if he will recover in time to return to the paddock this season.

Players and supporters wish him a speedy recovery.

COWBOYS CONTINUE TO IMPRESS THE Warwick Cowboys A Grade made it backto-back wins on Saturday with a 56-0 whitewash of the Oakey Bears.

It was an outstanding performance from the Warwick side to hold the Bears scoreless in the game and coach Matt Gainey was impressed with the Cowboys defence.

The win takes the Cowboys to 10 points on the TRL ladder just two points behind Highfields Wattles and Pittsworth. The Gatton Hawks are still making all the running at the top of the table on 16 points with eight wins from eight games this season.

The Cowboys made it a clean sweep on Saturday with wins in all four grades.

Great defence was the corner stone of the Gremlins win over the Killanrey Cutters in last weekends BRL game.

The Reserve Grade won 48-18; the Under 18s match was a closer game the result 28-22 and the C Grade had a 26-16 win.

This weekend the Cowboys will be looking to add another win when they host the Goondiwindi Boars on Saturday at Fr Ranger Oval.

WATTLES GUTSY WIN IN A low scoring game at Highfields, Wattles turned on some spectacular defence to outmuscle the home side in a true arm wrestle. Wattles prevailed 12-6 in a thrilling game.

Highfields drew first blood in the game with a try in the opening quarter. Wattles Brodie Ciesolka scored both tries. His first was fine individual effort to get his side on the board in the first half.

In the second half, he crossed for the winning try 16 minutes from full time to break the deadlock.

Cameron Moodie had added the extras for both tries and Wattles defended their narrow lead until full time.

In other grades, Wattles defeated Highfields 23-16 in Reserve Grade but were soundly defeated in the Under 18s 58-24.

This weekend Wattles host Toowoomba Brothers in all four grades.

GREMLINS TAKE HOLD OF NO 1 SPOT THE Stanthorpe Gremlins cemented their spot at the top of the BRL table last weekend with a tough win against premiers Killarney.

The Gremlins were without nine of their regular first grade players and it is a credit to the young players who stepped up to the mark last weekend.

The more senior players including Ben Staley and Jason Wilmot played a real leadership role in the win. It was a game of two halves.

Stanthorpe had the better performance in the first half and took a handy lead to break. Killarney played much better in the second half and a hat-trick of tries to Matthew Butler put them in a strong position and back into the game. A shoulder injury to the Killarney captain coach John Trindall was a setback for the home side. Dion Galloway has been in excellent form in recent games and once again was one of the best on the paddock for the Cutters.

A serious ankle injury to Gremlins Jason Cobon put a dampener on the win for the Gremlins who are now two points clear of Tenterfield at the top of the BRL ladder.

MAUGERI TOO GOOD AT SPORTERS A TURN out last Sunday at Stanthorpe Sporters where Angelo Maugeri proved too good coming away with a win. Runner-up was Owen McPaul with the run-downs going to Josh Anderson and Rod Pettiford who also had the Best Gross. The pin shot on the 12th went to Terry Byrnes and the 17th to No Won Kim. Paul Byrnes took the Pro Pin and a meat tray. Josh Anderson took home the remaining meat tray.

Same time tee-off next Sunday between 8.30am-9am.

RAMS ON THE RISE THE Wallangarra Rams continued their push in 2015 with a narrow win 32-28 win over Tenterfield last Saturday in the local derby.

The win was a shot in the arm to the Rams who are greatly improved this season. Roger Bartholomew scored a hat-trick for the Rams and was the best on ground.

Coedie Tandy continues to weave his magic for the Rams and always looks dangerous with the ball in hand, and is a great addition to the Rams team. The Rams led at half time and had to withstand a strong challenge from the Tigers who are ruing their missed opportunities. The Tigers led 28-16 with five minutes to go, but a late try to the Rams sealed the game in their favour.

Captain coach Brendan Minns said after the game the Tigers ball control had not been as sharp as it should be and unforced errors were giving their opponents easy metres and opportunity. “We have the ability to put on points but are just making things difficult for ourselves,” Minns said.

The Tigers will be hoping to turn things around this weekend when they play Stanthorpe for the Patron’s Cup. The Rams go head to head with Killarney and they will be looking for another two points to improve their position.

LEAGUE TAG IN the BRL Ladies League Tag competition, the Tenterfield Tigerettes once again showed they are head and shoulders above the competition with a decisive 28-6 win over the Ramettes. Killarney who were monstered last weekend by the Tigerettes are slowly finding their way in their first year of competition. It was a much-improved effort to get within two points of the Gremlinettes (16-14) in a thrilling game. It was another solid performance from the Stanthorpe girls who continue impress. Their big challenge comes this weekend when they meet the Tigerettes. Their
