Wood at the hub

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS JASON Wood, Federal Member for La Trobe, was at the Youth Services and Inspiro site in Belgrave on Tuesday to announce a $3.8 million funding boost for the new Belgrave Multi-Purpose Health Hub. This is the largest federal funding grant Yarra Ranges Council has ever received.

The $8.3 million new community health hub will combine many services for the community including physical, mental and dental health services.

Yarra Ranges Council has committed to funding the remaining costs but will lobby for more input from both state and federal governments.

Yarra Ranges councillor Mike Clarke expressed his happiness at the announcement of the funding for this project.

“Preventative health care is a big need in this area,” he said.

“This funding and these services are a dream come true.”

The project has received this funding on top of a $1 million grant from the State Government.

The new community health hub will create approximately 70 new jobs in the area from construction through to employment once completed.

The hub will house council’s maternal and child health, youth services and aged and disability services as well as Inspiro’s Belgrave services and the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS).

Tania Bevan of DRERS said the upgrade was much-needed for their organisation.

“It’ll be an absolute honour to be part of this building,” she said.

The hub will be built to respond to community needs analysis and research conducted by the Yarra Ranges Council since 2010.

Mr Wood also stressed the need for a headspace office in the new site to

accommodate the issues in the youth community of the area.

“Issues such as youth suicide, ice use and depression are ripping through the community and you cannot have

enough services in these areas,” he said.

The planning permits for the site have been submitted to council and the project is expected to be completed in

Any takers for campus?

By JESSE GRAHAM EXPRESSIONS of interest for Lilydale’s former Swinburne University campus will only be open for TAFE providers and dual-sector universities, according to Education Minister James Merlino.

The Mail reported last week that the former Swinburne campus could be the site of the Yarra Ranges’ new technical school under the recently-released State Budget.

Education Minister, Deputy Premier and Monbulk MP James Merlino said there may be an opportunity to have the tech school on the site, but that talks on the campus’s future were continuing.

In response to questions sent by the Mail, received after last week’s deadline, Mr Merlino said the expressions of interest (EOI) in the site would be open to TAFEs and dual-sector universities which provided TAFE and higher education courses.

“The Labor Government is continuing work preparing the expressions of interest process, with the expectation that the Lilydale campus will re-open in the first-half of 2016,” he said.

Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe said that limiting the EOI process to TAFE and dual-sector universities excluded traditional universities which do not provide TAFE courses.

“By excluding traditional universities from their EOI process, the Andrews Government is setting limits

on what our children can aspire to become,” she said.

“It is very disappointing, especially after all the arm waving and shouting the minister did before the election.”

Prior to the election, Mr Merlino, Premier Daniel Andrews and campaigners met at the former campus where Mr Andrews promised the site would be re-opened for TAFE and university courses should Labor be elected.

Mr Merlino said the government’s $320 million TAFE Rescue Fund included a provision of $10 million in this year’s budget for re-opening the campus, which was also promised before the election.

An EOI process under the former government last year resulted in no provider taking up the site because none of the proposals fitted the strict criteria of maintaining the site as an educational precinct.

Two programs to boost farming, employment

By VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS FEDERAL Minister for Industry and Science Ian Macfarlane and La Trobe MP Jason Wood last week visited Mountain Harvest Foods in Gembrook to discuss two vital manufacturing programs.

Both the Next Generation Manufacturing Investment Program and the Manufacturing Transition Program are designed to aid local manufacturing farming businesses to increase growth.

Mr Wood said, in a written statement, the programs had been beneficial for local communities.

“It’s great to see family businesses like Mountain Harvest Foods not only growing their company capability and capacity, but also increasing local employment,” he said.

The Next Generation Manufacturing Investment Programme is a $60 million competitive grants program to support businesses in South Australia and Victoria.

The Manufacturing Transition Programme also supplies grants to help manufacturing businesses become more competitive and sustainable.

Thanks to the support of these government initiatives, Mountain Harvest Foods hopes to double the employment of local people in the next 18 months and triple within the next five years.

Food manufacturing in the area has also helped rejuvenate farming in La Trobe as well.

Briefly POLICE are searching for witnesses, after a car fire on Brandt Road in Lysterfield last week.

At 2.20am on Tuesday 19 May, emergency services crews were called out to the car fire.

The car, believed to be a Mitsubishi coupe with no identifying features or registration plates, was destroyed by the fire.

Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area at the time of the fire is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Charged over speedboat theft A LAUNCHING Place man and a Montrose man both face court after being arrested for stealing a speedboat from Kilsyth earlier this month.

On 15 May, police intercepted a 43-year-old Launching Place man on Swansea Road, Montrose, where he was found with a stolen speedboat, taken from Kilsyth earlier in the day.

Five days later, a 26-year-old Montrose man was arrested and charged with handling stolen goods, theft of a boat and breaching an intervention order, and was remanded in custody in relation to the same theft.

Stolen property from the boat was recovered at the Montrose man’s house.

The Launching Place man has been charged with handling stolen goods, and will front Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 18 June.

Dog-gone thieves THOUSANDS of dollars in jewellery was stolen from a residential property in Selby last Tuesday, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Between 8am and 5pm on Tuesday 19 May,

jewellery and mp3 players were stolen from a property on Maskells Hill Road in Selby.

Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Mark Smithwick, said police believed the robbers accessed the house via a doggy door.

“They must have been skinny offenders,” he said.

The estimated value of the stolen items is about $10,000.

Det Sgt Smithwick asked for residents to lock their doggy doors where possible, and for anyone with information to call Lilydale police on 9739 2300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

TV stolen from school A TELEVISION was stolen from Upwey Primary School last week, and police are searching for witnesses.

Between 19 and 20 May, unknown people are believed to have accessed the Darling Avenue school buildings via an unlocked window, with a television, among other items, stolen.

Cash box, $5000 stolen A CASH box containing thousands of dollars was stolen from a Macclesfield property last week, and police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

On Monday 18 May, between 8am and 11.15am, unknown people entered a house on Coopers Road, Macclesfield, and removed a cash box and money, believed to be about $5000.

Bold thief parks in driveway A KALLISTA woman came home to an unpleasant surprise last week, finding a thief’s car in her driveway.

About 11am on Monday 18 May, a Kallista woman came home to her property on KallistaEmerald Road, and found an unknown car in her driveway.

Low-speed boat chase POLICE are searching around the hills for an early ’90s model Ford Falcon after a low-speed pursuit last week.

During a routine patrol of Wicks Reserve in The Basin on Tuesday 19 May, Boronia police indicated for the Falcon, towing a boat, to stop.

The driver failed to stop, and led police on a low-speed pursuit onto Boronia Road.

Police eventually gave up their pursuit for safety reasons, when the Falcon was driving on the wrong side of the road and, later, when the boat hit a car at the intersection of Tormore Road and Boronia Road, causing minor damage.

PRESCHOOLERS at the Kallista Kindergarten are now learning Japanese as part of the Australian Government’s $9.8 million Early Learning Languages Australia (ELLA) trial.

Scott Ryan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Education and Training, and Casey MP Tony Smith visited the Kallista Kindergarten last week.

The kindergarten is one of 41 pre-schools across Australia taking part in the trial to explore new ways to help children learn languages other than English.

The ELLA trial will comprise seven applications (otherwise known as apps) to teach pre-schoolers basic Mandarin, Japanese, Indonesian, French or Arabic language skills.

Senator Ryan said the ELLA trial is designed to give pre-schoolers the opportunity to recognise different sounds and language concepts.

“Children are growing up in an increasingly competitive and globalised world,” Senator Ryan said.

“The Australian Government is committed to increasing the number of students studying a language.”

Mr Smith said he was delighted local children were selected to take

MOUNT Evelyn tertiary student Kate Taylor was among four in the Yarra Ranges who received a $3000 scholarship and encouragement award.

As part of Inspiro’s annual program, the nonprofit community health service rewarded the standout students, providing them with financial assistance to help with the cost of their studies.

The winners all demonstrated academic achievement, a passion to succeed and a commitment to improve the health and well-being of their local community.

Ms Taylor is in her second year of a double degree Bachelor of Paramedic Practice and Bachelor of Public Health Promotion at Latrobe University, Bendigo.

Inspiro chief executive officer Karyn McPeake said Inspiro and its scholarship partners, including Yarra Ranges Shire, recognised the value of providing support.

“Awarding this $10,000 will make a big difference in the lives of these students and, in turn, to our community,” she said.

“We encourage anyone studying in tertiary health to consider making a scholarship application next year.”

Ms Taylor has spent her life living and working in the Yarra Valley, including time in volunteer roles within the community.

Ms Burgess has a lifelong ambition to work in healthcare, as well as spend time in a third world country to provide primary health care.

Impatient risky drivers DRIVERS who ignored road blocks along Liverpool Road last week were placing lives at risk, according to The Basin CFA. Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and The Basin CFA members attended a three-car accident at The Basin and set up a road block while tending to an injured elderly lady.

Despite the heavy presence, numerous cars ignored the lane closures and “snuck” through the road blocks.

The Basin CFA Captain Matt Ahern said the drivers’ actions were incredibly dangerous.

“In the minds of the emergency service workers, the road is closed,” he said.

“So they might be going to get equipment or cleaning up something.

“They don’t expect cars to be on the road.”

Captain Ahern said road blocks were in place for good reason.

“We don’t hold up people for no reason,” he said.

“We appreciate things were chaotic and people were frustrated, but there is no excuse.

“We want everyone to get home safely.”

Captain Ahern said such actions made it difficult for the crews, because it is taking their attention away from their job.

He said emergency service workers, too, wanted to get the lanes flowing again as quickly as possible.

In order to stem the flow, police were forced to use their vehicles to better block the traffic.

The Basin CFA is reminding drivers if they come across an accident scene, they need to be patient and follow directions.

The culprit drove away after causing extensive damage to the bumper bar.

A BELGRAVE family is appealing for witnesses after a hit-and-run incident in the car park behind the Safeway supermarket.

Resident Gemma Schofield said her son had parked his blue early 2000s Mitsubishi Magna sedan and left for the Subway store to buy a meal.

When he returned, about 15 minutes later, he noticed the damage, yet no-one had owned up to the incident.

The damage occurred on Sunday, 17 May, about 6pm.

Ms Schofield said the incident has had a major impact on her son’s life.

“While it’s not the greatest of cars, it is his lifeline,” she said.

“He is unable to use public transport due to challenges with anxiety.

“The police cannot help because no names were exchanged, so we are appealing for help from the community

over this crime.”

Ms Schofield said the person responsible must have known they hit the car.

“It’s hit hard enough that the bumper bar has come off,” she said.

“What right do these people have to think they have no responsibility?

“These dodgy drivers need to be brought to justice.”

PETER Chilcott, 62, last week pleaded guilty to failing to stop in a hitand-run car accident involving a pedestrian in Mount Evelyn in September 2013.

Chilcott faces up to 25 years in jail for lying to police and 10 years jail for leaving athletics coach Thomas Kelly to die.

Mr Kelly was hit and killed while walking on Birmingham Road, Mount Evelyn.

Police allege Mr Chilcott failed to stop at the scene after hitting Mr Kelly, then told his de facto wife Lorraine Morris, who was travelling with him, to lie to police.

Mr Chilcott was heard on police bugs admitting he would have been over the legal blood alcohol limit when driving, and he lied to police as he was worried about losing his licence.

A GROWING number of our neighbours will face a lonely winter this year with as many as 7 per cent, or 1.5 million Australians, this year predicted to be considered isolated or very isolated.

IT’S unthinkable that any appointment could be so pressing that one could put another’s life in serious danger. Yet, this is what occurred last week at The Basin when numerous drivers deemed it necessary to sneak through a road block at Liverpool Road.

Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria and the SES had closed a laneway in order to safely attend a three-car accident. But evidently the frustration over being held up for a few minutes was too much for many drivers to handle so they chose to break the rules and drive on through.

These actions were a danger to all those present. While crew members were tending to an injured elderly driver, they are simply not aware of, or expecting, cars to be in the lane. In an already chaotic situation, these acts unnecessarily increased the likelihood of another serious accident.

On their Facebook page, The Basin CFA captured this sentiment precisely.

“We can’t let you through just because you have to get the kids to school, or you are late for work... you can’t sneak through.

“You could be risking our lives and we don’t like that.”

Emergency services crews fulfil a crucial role in our community.

They provide on-the-ground support in natural disasters such as floods or storms, as well as road rescue and search efforts.

While we may not need them often, when we do, their help is invaluable.

So let’s at least repay their fine work by ensuring their safety when they are carrying out their job.

Please, if you come across an accident scene, take a deep breath, gather your thoughts and spare a thought for the many hours these volunteers contribute to our communities each week.

SHOULD schizophrenia be renamed to help reduce the stigma that surrounds people with the illness? The suggestion continues to spark debate.

There is no question that people living with schizophrenia are still stigmatised. We know that people diagnosed as having schizophrenia die up to 20 years earlier than others in the community and a few years ago schizophrenia was declared the ‘abandoned illness’ by the Schizophrenia Commission in the UK. Now new research, the largest study to explore renaming the illness, has again highlighted the complexities of damaging stigma associated with diagnoses, particularly schizophrenia. After survey-

more visible, schizophrenia has retreated further into the shadows.

In a recent essay shortlisted for the Gavin Mooney Memorial Essay Competition, she says: ‘One has to be brave to say ‘I have schizophrenia’ ’.

What’s needed most is a change of attitude across the community.

SANE Australia recently called on the Federal Government to put in place a five-year national stigma reduction campaign.

During this year’s Schizophrenia Awareness Week (17-23 May), I again urge the government to support this initiative, so that we can build a fair, decent and prosperous Australia in which we all have a place and contribution to make.

Issue is intense

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges councillor Jim Child has rejected suggestions a proposed planning scheme amendment could pave the way for factory farming.

A petition launched on change. org urges people to oppose Amendment C146 which it claims will allow feedlots, piggeries and broiler farms in Green Wedge zones.

The amendment proposes to remove the current prohibition on intensive animal husbandry in Green Wedge Zones 1, 2 and 3 which cover parts of Wandin North, Silvan, Monbulk, Coldstream, Gruyere, Macclesfield, Belgrave South, Sassafras, Narre Warren East, Yellingbo and Hoddles Creek.

A letter sent to around 3000 property owners in those areas invited comment on the proposal.

It explained the definition of Intensive Animal Husbandry as the use of land to keep or breed farm animals where the majority of feed is sourced off site.

“It includes cattle feedlots, piggeries and broiler farms, but can also be less intense free-range farms where animals are not kept in enclosures,” the letter stated.

The problem, according to Cr Child, is that any farm where the animals are not solely grazing, falls within the current classification of intensive animal husbandry.

And, all intensive animal husbandry is currently prohibited in the Green Wedge 1, 2 and 3 zones.

In just over a week, more than 1160 people, many from across Yarra Ranges Shire, but also from around Australia and overseas, have signed the petition - “Say NO to Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme Amendment C146 Intensive Animal Husbandry”.

The petition states: “The Shire of Yarra Ranges is in a Green Wedge Zone and this means that intensive animal husbandry like feedlots, piggeries and broiler farms are prohibited at the moment.

“The shire wants to change the planning scheme so that in the future permits can be given to allow these sorts of farms.

“Feedlots, piggeries and broiler farms keep animals in permanent confinement; crammed together in cages, sheds or pens for their entire lives.

They will never roam in a paddock, lie in the sun or forage for their food. This is factory farming.”

Objections range from fears the proposed changes will lead to cruel and inhumane treatment of farm animals to degradation of the green wedge zones.

Sue Forrester from Dixons Creek posted “I cannot believe this shire (which supposedly prides itself on being green) condones the idea of factory farming”.

Sue Hoffman from Warburton labelled factory farming “inhumane”, and Kylie Barton from Upper Ferntree Gully said it was “cruel and unnecessary”.

“Intensive farming is unwanted in my town of Monbulk/Olinda,” Robert Stephen posted.

‘Intensive farming’ is open to interpretation. 139481 Former Yarra Ranges councillor Samantha Dunn called for a site specific amendment, saying the C146 proposal was a ‘retrograde step’. But Cr Child says all these comments miss the point, and presume the opposite to what Amendment C146 aims to achieve.

He said currently, a property owner with a few chickens who brings in the majority of their feed is defined in the same way as a farmer running cattle or pigs where food is brought in to supplement grazing.

In Green Wedge Zones 5 and 6, this is allowed under a permit, but in Zones 1, 2 and 3, it is not.

“We don’t want to go down the track of extreme intensive farming where you have a female animal in a factory situation,” Cr Child said.

“That is why we are looking at this scenario and why we have to be very clear in our explanation (to the Minister) of what we want.”

Cr Child said although letters were

sent only to residents in the areas directly affected, any Yarra Ranges resident could make a submission.

The amendment documents are available for viewing at Yarra Ranges Community Link Centres, on the council website www.yarraranges.vic.gov. au/146 , and at www.dtpli.vic.gov.au/ publicinspection Submissions must be sent in writing by 1 June.

Panel hearings will be on 3 August and 1 September.

THE Jessops moved to Macclesfield to get back to basics.

They bought a rundown 15-acre farm riddled with jumping jack nests and fallen trees and over the past five years created a fresh food haven.

Melanie and Warwick and their sons Bailin, 8, and Ollie, 5, have six sheep in their paddocks - and four in the freezer.

“Having your own lamb you know where it’s coming from, what you’ve fed it,” Melanie said.

“We’ve got a mobile butcher now that comes around.

“We would like to eventually have a few less sheep and then have a cow and a calf. We’ll do a calf each year for our meat and just eliminate the supermarket really.”

They have a vegie garden, fruit trees and chooks for eggs, and a neighbourhood barter system adds to their fresh food haul.

“The lady down the road has bees and she’ll give us honey and then she’ll use our wood-splitter,” Melanie said.

There’s an organic pig farmer across the road.

“Warwick is a diesel mechanic so he helps her with maintenance and then she gives us pork,” she said.

“This year we’re trying to get pork from across the road to make our own Polish sausage and salami and cure our own meats as well, just to get back to what our grandparents used to do.”

Melanie grew up on a farm in Up-

per Beaconsfield and “didn’t have processed foods a lot”. She would visit her grandmother’s Dandenong property where she grew fruit trees and “made everything”.

“You turn 18 and then you move out of home and then you eat all the things you shouldn’t eat,” she said.

“Then I fell pregnant with Bailin and it just got me thinking about stuff again, so I started reading books.”

She wanted to share her back-tobasics lifestyle so set her sights on a co-operative. She’s been running The Hills and Valleys Co-op with Emerald mum Alison Edwards for 18 months.

“Some people don’t have the land to be able to grow their own produce,” Melanie said.

“Having the co-op means everybody can access it, everybody can get good fruit and veg.

“We’ve just started doing dried goods as well.

“Alison and I, with other people as well, we run a canteen at the school twice a term and there’s no artificial colours or preservatives and we cater to all food allergies, so every kid in the school can have the opportunity to eat from the canteen.

“That, to me, is really important.

“Somebody might not like what we have but I don’t want anybody who can’t have what we have to offer.”

Art Expressions fill these frames

By JESSE GRAHAM A COLLECTION of photographs from Yarra Ranges’ enthusiasts is on offer for visitors at Warburton’s Upper Yarra Arts Centre, with the exhibition wrapping up early next month.

The Yarra Ranges Photographic Society’s exhibition, Expressions, opened on 15 May at the Arts Centre, and will finish up on Tuesday 9 June.

Featuring 55 photographic prints from the society’s members, committee member Rob Wagner said there was no set theme for the exhibition, just quality images.

“It’s just basically a collection of our favourite shots from recent times, all put together,” he said.

From landscapes to portraits, candid images to posed glamour shots, black and white to vivid colour and everything in-between, Expressions contains many different styles of photography, each eye-catching in its own way.

Mr Wagner said Expressions was the group’s first large-scale exhibition, and society vice-president Antony Dimmock said he was hoping to make it a biannual event.

The group features a range of happy-snappers

from all walks of life, with the one requirement being an enthusiasm for getting behind a camera, according to Mr Wagner.

“If people want to join, they don’t have to feel like they’ve got to be experts,” he said.

Stirring night of passion and poetry Apocalyptic perfection

The journey begins at 4pm, on 31 May, at the Exit Theatre in Healesville and continues at Ruby’s Music Room in the Melbourne CBD on 6 and 7 June.

MAD Max: Fury Road is a masterpiece: action as high art.

In the lawless post-apocalyptic wasteland of the near future, the steely Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) joins forces with disturbed rover Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) to find a fabled oasis and rescue the wives of a ruthless warlord.

Like a relic from the action genre’s hardcore '70s-'80s heyday, this visceral thrill-ride will be hard to top, this year or any year.

Most current action movies wish they had characters this complex and dynamic, atmosphere this vivid and visual style so stark and yet so vibrant. The film’s tone is gloriously over-thetop yet carries gripping pathos

and profound, raw emotion.

Fury Road is practically one long chase sequence, but it’s impeccably paced. Director George Miller (who made the first three Mad Max films) knows where to put his peaks and troughs in the chaos, so the action never wears you out.

The action is also remarkably inventive and organic, with the barest minimum of CGI and real cars wrecking each other in stunts beautiful to behold.

Refreshingly, Fury Road also features numerous strong female characters who kick ass but aren’t idealised or sexualised. Max is the stoic protagonist, but Furiosa is the indomitable leader.

Exceptionally written, powerfully acted and surging with great action, Mad Max: Fury Road is a crowning entry in both its franchise and genre.

Squads see mixed results

By JUDY ORREN YVMDFNL THE Yarra Valley travelled to Drouin on Saturday to take on Gippsland in what was to be a battle for ninth position in the state.

For the first time the Yarra Valley fielded an Under 17 netball team.

All players, coaches and support staff who gave up their time to participate in what is one of the biggest sporting days in the AFL VIC Country calendar are thanked for their efforts.

The support from clubs and players within the Yarra Valley was amazing, as the crowd was estimated to be well over 1500 people.

The conditions were perfect for football and netball.

SENIOR FOOTBALL Gippsland 13.17 (95) d Yarra Valley 3.6 (24) The outcome of the senior football was not what many expected.

The first quarter was an even tussle with Gippsland going into the first break with an 11-point lead.

Gippsland definitely could have had the game done and dusted in the first quarter if it kicked straight because it had eight scoring shots to two.

The second quarter was much the same, with Yarra Valley kicking 2.2 to 2.1.

The second quarter was a game of the centre half-back lines because no one could really break through the defences to gain any real advantage.

The margin at half-time was 10 points.

The boys needed to come out firing in the third quarter if they were going to make headway.

Gippsland played the ground better in the third and were full of running, as Yarra Valley were caught ball watching and being second to the ball.

Gippsland kicked 3.5 to 2 points to extend their lead to 31 points at three-quarter time.

It was time now for the Yarra Valley boys to dig deep and try to make some inroads into the deficit.

Gippsland had other ideas and completely dominated in the last, kicking 6.5 to 0.1 to run away with a 71-point win.

Yarra Valley best players: Scott Dwyer (Wandin - 1 goal; named best on ground), Luke McKenna (Emerald), Damon Kift (Mount Evelyn), Tom Stubley (Belgrave), Ben Miller (Healesville), Michael Batten (Woori Yallock).

UNDER 18S FOOTBALL Gippsland 11.11 (77) d Yarra Valley 7.7 (49) This game started out evenly with Gippsland kicking 2.3 to 2.1 in the first quarter.

The second quarter was also a game of keepings off, with Gippsland kicking three goals to two in the second.

It went into half-time with a 6-point lead.

Cory Glass was a target up forward and the boys needed to start to fire in the centre.

The backline was holding tough.

The third quarter saw Gippsland come out with more intensity and managed to stretch their lead to 16 points at three-quarter time by kicking 2.6 to 1.2.

The last quarter was definitely won by Gippsland as it ran away with the win by kicking 4 goals to 2.

The boys battled hard all day, but just could not get the run they needed to outclass Gippsland.

By half-time, the Yarra Valley had extended its lead to 20 goals.

The third quarter was tighter, with Gippsland shooting 12 goals to Yarra Valley’s 13.

The fourth quarter was won by Yarra Valley shooting 19 goals to 14.

The dominance of Ella Priestley in wing attack and the defensive structure headed by Ty Coppinger, Gretta Hankinson and Riley Gentle, well and truly outclassed Gippsland across the court.

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Valley netball clubs Mount Evelyn and Coldstream are enjoying the winter season at the new Pinks Reserve netball complex.

Mount Evelyn has 18 teams registered from under-9 through to the open section, giving Mount Evelyn a strong presence across the courts.

Under-15 coach Lisa Jones said the new complex was working well, not only for the players, but for the coaches, umpires and spectators.

“The design allows plenty of room for everyone to move around without getting in the way of the game,” she said.

“Having the coaches’ area allows us to watch the game with a great view of the court and players without being blocked by people walking past.”

Coldstream is also on a roll with nine teams, also from under-9 to open. Under-15 coach Liz Westwood agreed that the complex was a huge improvement on the old Mooroolbark courts.

“I love the new courts and the entire complex,” she said.

There was praise for everything from the great amenities including toilets and umpires’ and change rooms, to the beautiful surroundings and mountain backdrop.

“And, the surface is great, there are no tree roots to contend with, or overhanging trees and room for the umpires around the court,” Westwood said.

It was a stableford event and by the time he had finished his round, he had amassed 42 points to be king of the kids and prince of the B Graders as well. A right royal performance indeed.

Travis Gerbes (10) led in the A Graders with 41 points after a great round of golf.

Of the rest, Graham White (16) was the best with 38 followed by Phillip Crossley (20) on 36.

Peter Glasscock was nearest the pin on the 4th, Dean Shannon the 7th, John Fisher the 12th, Ian Cranston the 13th and, once again, Peter Clowes picked up the pro pin cash on the 18th.

The ladies event saw another right royal struggle with the starlet of the day being Brianna McCoy again from Phillipa Morley, a visitor from Traralgon Golf Club for the day.

a round of stableford, it was Ken Hill (17) who played a beautiful round of golf for a whopping 48 points.

At the age of 75, he managed the magic trick of playing to his age with 75 off the stick.

He promises to do better next week but I suspect he might have peaked.

Next came John Piggott (20) with 43, followed by Ian Scott (25), Ken Sumsion (24) and Seppy Krummenacher (21) who scored 39.

Two semi-finals of the 4BBB match play were held with two pairings winning the right to bash each other up in the grand final.

Dave Aitken and Mark Starick defeated Dean Shannon and Ken Sumsion 1-up while Broc Reynolds and Peter Clowes downed Peter Glasscock and John Carvill also 1-up.

Next Saturday is the annual event where holes are joined together to make a 14-hole course with many twists and trees in the way.

It gives players a legitimate reason to be aiming through the trees and to extend the colour in their language when unsuccessful.
