By NOEL MURPHY DEAKIN University and Vice Chancellor Jane den Hollander face discrimination claims by former head of architecture Hisham Elkadi.

A federal court hearing is scheduled for September after papers filed with the court alleged Professor Elkadi was denied a promotion because of his race, colour and national extraction.

Prof Elkadi alleged Professor den Hollander had cited his accent and skin colour in profes-

sional and social dealings.

Deakin declined to discuss the matter publically. “We will not be commenting on individual claims on a detailed matter that is currently before the court,� a spokesperson told the Independent.

Defence documents reportedly cite the work of Prof den Hollander, who was born in Zambia, as a volunteer English instructor in apartheid-era South Africa and in promoting racial diversity.

Prof Elkadi left Deakin abruptly last year, taking up a

portedly claimed he was asked to withdraw his application for senior arts and education posts that were instead given to lessqualified academics.

He outlined various incidents of Prof den Hollander causing him embarrassment, offence and hurt with comments about his accent and colour.

He reportedly said he felt marginalised and uncomfortable that she might have considered his colour when assessing his competence.

GEELONG has become a key battleground in the fight against unscrupulous payday lenders with the expansion of a program offering a fairer alternative.

The region has one of three Good Money stores in Victoria because of its growing population and high number low-income earners.

“Geelong was an obvious choice for Good Money,” said national manager Andrew Knight.

The last state budget allocated $7.2 million over four years to support Good Money in Geelong, Collingwood and Dandenong. A first of its kind in Australia, Good Money provides no or low-interest loans to battlers.

Mr Knight said competing with payday lenders was difficult because Good Money was unable to similarly advertise.

He holds a prodigious CV: honorary fellow at the University College London, honorary fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, member of Institute of Egyptian Architects, affiliate of the Royal Institute of British Architects and fellow of the Australia Institute of Buildings.

He has written five books, more than 100 refereed publications and graduated 18 PhD students. He is a member of the Australian Association of Heads of Schools of Architecture, the Association of the Australian Deans of the Built Environment and of the Board of Examiners, ARB-Victoria.

He had not responded to the Independent’s requests for comment before the paper went to press.

Strait cable hope ‘alive’ as $2b wind farm flops

By NOEL MURPHY HYDRO Tasmania is still interested in a Bass Strait connection to the mainland despite dumping its $2 billion King Island wind farm plans to power Geelong.

The company dropped its 200-turbine TasWind project on economic grounds late last year after high-profile protests but this week confirmed it was working with the Tasmanian Department of State Growth on the feasibility of a second connector across Bass Strait.

“This work will involve progressing and updating work that Hydro Tasmania had already done around the TasWind project,” spokesman Ian Col-

vin told the Independent.

“Previously, (it) looked at route options through King Island and other direct possible cable routes and included a range of assessments, including seabed corridor route, Tasmanian and Victorian cable landing locations, land cable routes and grid connection issues.

“The current project will reassess direct interconnection options without going through King Island.”

Mr Colvin said the key objective of the work was to understand under what conditions a second interconnector would be viable under a range of market scenarios.

“The work will build significantly on all the work that Hydro Tasmania

has undertaken in this space. It is expected to take a few months,” he said.

Hydro Tasmania, Australia’s largest renewable energy generator, said it would explore new wind farm opportunities after this week’s bipartisan federal agreement to lower the Renewable Energy Target from 41,000 gigawatt hours to 33,000, fully exempt trade-exposed industries and scrap two-yearly reviews.

But the company categorically rejected any chance of revisiting the King Island wind farm “RET or no RET”.

The dumped project would have been the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere - a 600 megawatt facility Roaring Forties wind, capable of pro-

viding power for 240,000 homes in the Geelong region.

The proposal faced hurdles from the start, including opposition on grounds that wind farms still needed coal-generated power as a back up and because the King Island site was important orange-bellied parrot habitat.

Hydro Tasmania dropped the project because: it was economically unviable as a stand-alone wind farm or as a staged connection to Tasmania; changing economic conditions had inceased the estimated capital costs by around $150 million; and extending TasWind as a staged connection to Tasmania would be more expensive than other direct connection options between the state and Victoria.

The Member for Corangamite said VicRoads had announced a $2.9 million upgrade of the roundabout at the intersection of Great Ocean and Camp Rds, which during summer could cause traffic bottlenecks stretching eight kilometres.

Storages fall THE REGION’S water storages have continued falling despite late-autumn rain over the past week.

Barwon Water recorded the storages at a combined 57.4 per cent of capacity on Wednesday after 15mm of rain in the previous seven days.

Edwards retires LONG-SERVING Geelong Gallery director Geoffrey Edwards has announced his retirement.

The gallery said Mr Edwards would complete his service in April after 15 years in charge of Geelong’s leading arts facility.

A series of barbies planned for Geelong’s northern suburbs will bring long-term unemployed people and frontline services together.

A project funded through Rosewall Neighbourhood Centre, Work-

force Development Centre and Geelong region LLEN is behind the initiative.

Project officer Peter Macdonald said long-term unemployed people often had no idea where to turn.

“There’s a whole range of community organisations that the long-term unemployed tend to go to but people in those organisations don’t necessarily know what to do with them once they’ve been there,” he said.

The barbecues aimed to bring all parties together to help pass on vital community information.

“We’re asking community organisations to come along and meet people who are unemployed, and we are also providing some training for frontline staff,“ Mr Macdonald said.

“Instead of saying, ‘Sorry, we don’t know anything’, with a bit of guidance frontline staff can make some phone calls or pass on some careers information.

“We want to make sure that when people come into community places there are people there with some knowledge to refer them on and give them a basic idea of what to do next.”

Corio Lions Club will conduct the free barbecues from 11am to 1pm Wednesday at Rosewall Neighbourhood Centre, 9 June at Cloverdale Community Centre and 11 June at Corio library.

Building owners rush grants for city fix-ups

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A $125,000 CENTRAL Geelong heritage grant scheme was over-subscribed when applications closed last week.

Deputy mayor Michelle Heagney said City Hall received 22 applications for projects ranging in value from $10,000 to in excess of the fund value of $125,000.

The Central Geelong Major Heritage Fund offers dollar-for-dollar grants for the restoration of heritage-listed facades.

Cr Heagney said Central Geelong Task Force would decide successful ap-

plicants, with grant recipients to be notified by 22 June.

The range of projects submitted included restoring slate roofs, works to heritage porticos and verandas, repainting facades, tuck-pointing brickwork, restoring windows, repairing stonework and restoring original flagpoles.

Cr Heagney, also chair of the task force, said the response was exciting.

“We wanted to help building owners improve the appearance of their buildings and encourage businesses and residents back into the city.”

Cr Heagney said restoration works

were “often low” on the agenda of city building owners but the grants would help them pay for improvements to heritage features.

She hoped building owners would utilise the fund to help “bring some pride back into the heart of our city”.

The Central Geelong Major Heritage Fund is an annual program, with a second round to be held in the next financial year.

The grants initiative is part of a council push to rejuvenate the city centre, often ranked as the number-one priority for the Geelong region.

Split on capping ‘exposed in Indy’ A LIBERAL party split on council rate capping emerged when South Barwon MP Andrew Katos slammed the policy in last week’s Independent, according to Labor.

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney said Mr Katos was at odds with Liberal local government spokesperson David Davis’s support for rates capping, which the Andrews Government intends to introduce next year.

Mr Katos told the Independent the policy was just “populist stuff trying to win votes”.

Ms Tierney said Mr Katos had “chosen not to stand with local ratepayers on the issue”.

“It’s time the Liberals came clean on what their position is on rate capping,” she said.

“Do they support hard-working ratepayers or do they want to see more wasteful spending?

“It’s clear just how out of touch Mr Katos is if he doesn’t think local residents deserve moreaffordable rates.”

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A SPATE of seven break-ins at Grovedale last weekend has highlighted police resourcing issues still plaguing Geelong, according to South Barwon MP Andrew Katos.

He said the Labor State Government’s failure to commit to ongoing police officer training in the last budget would make matters worse.

The Government opened a “Pandora’s Box” with its budget allocation of15 officers to the Bellarine Peninsula because it meant the Police Minister was directing the Chief Commissioner on where to station officers, Mr Katos said.

“Good luck to the Bellarine but we’ve never seen that done before. It’s up to government to provide the resourcing and funds and it’s at the discretion of the Chief Commissioner on where to allocate police.

“That decision is generally on the basis of crime statistics and where the hot spots are.”

The weekend break-ins continued a series of burglaries over several months at Grovedale, according to restaurateur Simon Parrott.

Mr Parrott said his Sandstone Cafe and Perrettis restaurant were among businesses in the area targeted over the past six months.

“They just smash in doors and they’re in and out very quickly. It seems they’re just

Mr Parrott said each burglary left damage bills of several hundred dollars.

Mr Katos said South Barwon needed additional police as a growth area.

“The Government says its new 400 custody officers are supposed to free up police from cell duty. Can they guarantee that 400 additional officers will

return to front-line policing?

“There’s no training going on at the academy at the moment - it’s come to a standstill.

The police service faces a high rate of attrition and the commitment is not keeping pace with officers leaving the force and no commitment to training extra officers.”

Police Minister Wade Noonan said the Andrews Labor Government had delivered a “re-

cord $2.5 billion for police for the next financial year.

“Four hundred police officers statewide will be able to return to the beat where they belong instead of babysitting crooks in police cells because the Government is introducing 400 custody officers to replace them,” Mr Noonan said.

“That equates to tens of thousands of extra shifts a year of frontline policing. Geelong will

Mr Noonan said the Government would provide a grant of $30,000 for initiatives to emerge from a Bellarine Community Safety Reference Group.

The group would give the community a say on the use of police resources, he said.

GEELONG bikie boss Daniel Roach has described as “b......t” a visa ban blocking his return to Australia.

The English-born Bandidos sergeant at arms remained stranded in Thailand this week after Immigration Minister Peter Dutton intervened personally to reject a return resident visa to Australia on character grounds.

The minister cited “alleged” but unspecified criminal activities including drugs offences.

Mr Roach responded angrily on Facebook.

“I’ve just woken up with hundreds of messages to which it will take me a week to reply,” he posted before closing his page later in the week.

“I appreciate everyone’s support but it’s all media propaganda.

“Please respect what my family is going through especially Kate and the kids because if you know me you know this is just b......t.”

An Immigration Department spokesperson told the Independent Mr Roach’s application for a new Australian visa was refused because he was “alleged to have had involvement in a range of criminal activities, including drug offences through his alleged association with an outlaw motorcycle gang in Victoria”.

Petition fights VCAT costs risk

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A PETITION will urge Victoria’s planning tribunal to rule out imposing costs on a community group over its failed bid to stop development of a service station at Drysdale.

The petition, which Drysdale’s Aaron Cooper posted at change.org, says awarding costs against Drysdale Clifton Springs Community Association (DCSCA) would likely mean the end of the organisation.

Lost servo appeal ‘could kill community group’ The Independent reported last month that DCSCA faced “unspecified” legal costs after losing its Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) appeal against the service station, proposed for a site near Drysdale and Clifton Springs’ main roundabout.

The petition said the community opposed the proposal, with most objectors unaware the

service station was planned or approved until it was too late.

“We believe that DCSCA acted with honourable intention and attempted to protect our community from this unsafe and unwelcome development with extremely limited resources.

“Should VCAT rule that DCSCA pay costs to Milemaker Petroleum, it is likely that DCSCA would be forced to cease its op-

eration. This would be a huge loss to the community.”

The petition also said service station proponent Milemaker Petroleum now wanted compensation from State Government for loss of business from the development of a Drysdale bypass, scheduled for completion in 2020.

Mr Cooper said the situation was ridiculous.

“Not only could this com-

munity lose its voice but on top of that if Milemaker is awarded compensation then we’re forking out as taxpayers for their costs.” he said.

Mr Cooper said the possibility of the bypass had been public knowledge for a long time.

VicRoads’ Tony Hedley said bypass impacts, including on the service station, would be assessed after the design was finalised.

“The planning process is in the preliminary stages only and therefore no compensation claim has been received from the owner of the site. VicRoads will continue to liaise with the land owner.”

Milemaker had not responded to calls for comment when the Independent went to press.

Dream home nightmare as couple battles run-off hell Anglers attack

Ms Gizycki and husband Stan have been fighting a four-year battle with planning authorities over run-off they claim has cracked their garage floor and threatens the rest of their Burberry Crt property.

“Eventually the house will move, engineers have told us. Eventually the slab will crack and then shift,” she said.

“We’ve tried everything - the council, VCAT, the Victoria Building Authority (VBA), the Ombudsman...no one can get to the bottom of it and fix it.

“No one wants to know. We’ve been snookered at every turn, it’s just been put in the too hard basket.”

The Gizyckis’ double-storey home is on a sharply sloping block with a fall of more than five metres from its rear boundary to the street frontage.

They blamed inadequate run-off provisions on adjoining properties but said they had been unable to have them overturned despite several regulatory and legal overtures.

RECREATIONAL anglers have hit back at professional fishermen’s concerns about netting bans for Corio and Port Phillip bays.

Friends of Corio Bay Action Group claimed professionals were trying to “fool the public”, accusing them of creating “their own black market” and making up catch figures to “protect a feral commercial industry with no quotas and destructive methods”.

The fiery response followed commercial anglers warning in last week’s Independent their industry faced extinction under the State Government netting bans. Seafood Industry Victoria backed their claims the bans would deny quality fish to consumers, benefit the black market, cost jobs and potentially lead to imports of unsafe products.

But the action group said “other open-water fisheries, long lining and diving” would fill any shortfall.

The group accused the professionals of under-stating their catches and said the bans would provide “far greater benefits socially and economically“.

The netters would also “receive fair payouts”, a spokesman for the group said.

“We the public and the government see straight through this crap.”

By NOEL MURPHY DUCK-HUNTING protesters have slashed the tyres of four hunters' cars in Geelong, a shooter has alleged.

Geelong Field & Game Hunting's Blair Findlay said shooters were treated as second-class citizens, constantly attacked and insulted when many were in fact conservationists.

"This weekend in Geelong at least four vehicles belonging to duck hunters were targeted and attacked whilst the owners were out hunting,â&#x20AC;? Mr Findlay said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;The result was multiple tyres slashed on all four.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have also heard of a father and daughter who had belongings stolen from their vehicle while they were out hunting. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Not only has this resulted in the feeling of having oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s privacy invaded and the inconvenience of having to source parts on a Sunday morning to get their vehicles home but all owners are now facing significant expense to repair their vehicles or replace stolen items.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Findlay said duck shooters faced

inordinate criticism and censure for a legal activity.

He had been called a murderer, had his sexuality and treatment of women questioned, been attacked for his work in conservation and insulted for hunting and gathering meat for friends and family, Mr Findlay said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Surely destroying, stealing or defacing public and private property is taking things too far. Hunters and our families have a right to be safe and not have our belongings stolen or damaged, or our character and intelligence insulted.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Findlay said a recent government study showed recreational hunting in 2013 was worth more than $13.5 million to the greater Geelong region. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s around 8.5 per cent of our gross regional product. It also generated employment for over 80 people, many at Winchester Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Geelong production facility.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Findlay said duck-shooters had fought for the importance of local wetlands to be recognised, maintained, monitored or restored.

In the 1960s hunters constructed channel systems still allowing local wetlands to be controlled to be the benefit of the environment and wildlife, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Geelong Field and Game and the Field and Game Australia WET Trust are currently in the process of constructing what will become the Connewarre Wetland Centre near Hospital Swamp. Do the anti-hunting and animal rights groups ever put their hand in their pockets to contribute to the management of our local parks and wetlands?â&#x20AC;?

SOME of you might think my idea this week goes a bit far in terms of frugality but really it’s doesn’t.

When you discover an amount of beauty product hidden within a container or tube that’s about to be discarded it’s actually a worthwhile opportunity to make a modest saving.

It can only be described as one of those exciting little moments when you find a decent amount of product just lying at the bottom and sides of the container and realise it has a few more uses to go.

When you think about it, the amount of product left behind within containers of products that we use on a daily basis can add up to a substantial amount.

It may be because we’re unaware of the amount still in there or simply that we might just not be that fussed about investigating further.

But a saving’s a saving, so it’s best to check.

We tend to spend ages squeezing and vigorously shaking product containers to get out that last little bit or we leave the bottles upside down for ages, strategically placing them so they don’t topple over while waiting patient-

ly for the very last drops to gather at the opening.

So, try avoiding rushing to the refuse or recycling bin because a container you think is empty usually isn’t at all.

Let’s face it, we all like to get the most out of the products we purchase, especially since we often pay well over the odds for them anyway.

An easy option to get the most out of a typical plastic container is to carefully cut it in half and just scoop out the leftover contents.

Then just get another empty plastic container – like one of those free makeup samples or even a travel-size plastic pot – and just pop your new-found remaining product inside.

Put the lid on to prevent it drying out and you’re ready to use it again.

Shops on coast battle holidays

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN TORQUAY Traders are campaiging against new public holidays in Victoria.

Torquay Traders chair Barrie Sutherland said the group was gathering information from Surf Coast businesses about the impact of April's extra Easter Sunday public holiday.

Many businesses closed on the Sunday to avoid losses from increased penalty rates for staff, he said.

“Businesses around here need the summer trade to see them through the winter season. Businesses are supposed to make a profit but many suffered a loss because of the extra holiday.

“We need to present a united front on this issue. We're doing the research and collecting data to demonstrate the impact of the Easter weekend holiday.

“This is the first step in fighting the holidays because we'll face it again at the grand final.”

Shadow small business minister Neale Burgess said the two extra holidays had created a “giant mess”.

“For a town like Torquay it destroys business confidence," he said.

“For many businesses there

was no point in being open. Many business owners said they might as well shut and they did shut.”

Mr Burgess said the extra holidays had been added without business consultation or assessing the impact on small business.

“This has added 250 per cent to the costs for many small businesses. A hospitality business faces paying $55 an hour for someone to make coffee.

“Other business owners have tried to staff their shops themselves because they could not afford to pay staff and make a loss.

“And that just adds to the stress. Some business owners have been devastated, some have found the whole situation traumatic.

“The government wants small business to employ our young people but this works directly against that aim.”

Mr Burgess said businesses such as cafes faced capacity issues and could not absorb the extra cost.

SPEAKING UP: Kristin Demetrious at home amid the community of Geelong West.

By NOEL MURPHY GEELONG West is known for its singular community, its ethnic and urban cultures – and its jewels.

Academic, activist and author Kristin Demetrious is one such gem whose contribution to Geelong West’s heritage, streetscapes, green credentials and better understanding of its own inherent values are a small treasure in their own right.

“As a young mum Kristin saw the need to improve her neighbourhood by beautifying the streetscape, planting trees, proposing traffic-calming measures, celebrating our heritage and improving amenities,” said Geelong West Neighbourhood House’s Rosemary Nugent.

“Many of these things that we take for granted today are due to the efforts and foresight of Kristin

and others in our community.

“Kristin has been a grassroots community activist who has been involved with a variety of urban greening and place-making projects in Geelong West. Her efforts link to a strong chain of community spirit in Geelong West; one that, over the years, has characterised this special place and its reputation for progressive thinking and bold initiatives.”

Next weekend Ms Demetrious will detail her experiences as a newcomer to Geelong West from inner-city Melbourne.

In the third of Geelong West Neighbourhood House's Jewel of the West talks, she will address the transition and the beginnings of her involvement with the local community.

Unsurprisingly, Ms Demetrious is a little self-effacing, attributing her achievements to others.

“The cosmopolitan feel to

Geelong West is quite unique and comes together really nicely,” she said.

“Geelong West is a place that’s still growing. It’s alive and got a real heart and that what’s really attractive about it.

“Hopefully new residents locating in West will find their voice and contribute. There’s a tradition of people putting in with progressive things.”

In 2003 Ms Demetrious received a Centenary Medal for her voluntary service with urban environmental and place-making group Greening Geelong West.

An associate professor at Deakin University, in 2008 she was named Teacher of the Year and in 2009 received a national teaching citation.

She will speak at Geelong West Town Hall's supper room from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday.

Jacka’s legend hits milestone

“Amid the smoke and the noise he clambered over the parapet, shot five Turks and bayoneted two as the rest hastily retreated,” the Australian Dictionary of Biography records.

“I managed to get the beggars, sir,“ he reputedly told the first officer to appear.

“For this action he received the Victoria Cross, the first to be awarded to the AIF in World War I,” the biography said.

Jacka went on to win two more awards for gallantry in France, a Military Cross and bar, but his action have long been deemed worthy of three Victoria Crosses.

Last month, on the 100th anniversary of Anzac Day, his family called for a review of his medal count. Local federal MPs Richard Marles and Sarah Henderson backed the call, along with Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons and Torquay RSL sub-branch president Ian Gilbank.

Contemporary VC winner Ben Roberts-Smith, cited for bravery in Afghanistan, also recently said anyone who knew anything about World War I knew that Jacka should have been awarded two more Victoria Crosses.

By NOEL MURPHY THIS WEEK marked the centenary of Geelong Victoria Cross winner Albert Jacka’s heroic seizing of a Turkish trench at Gallipoli.

Jacka shot five Turks and bayoneted two in an assault that brought Australia its first Victoria Cross of the Great War and propelled him to national fame.

Early on 19 May 2015 the Turks launched a massive counter-attack along practically the entire Anzac line, rushing Courtney’s Post about 4am. They captured an 11-metre section of Jacka’s trench amid frenzied fighting.

For several minutes Jacka fired warning shots into the trench wall until reinforcements arrived and, after shouting his instructions, he and three others sprang out into the trench.

All but Jacka were immediately hit, so he leapt back into the communication trench.

TIM SACLIER’S “nuanced” approach (Letters, 8 May) did not mention the fact that Australia, as far as I can ascertain, has no register of vaccine or medication-damaged people.

Small wonder a chap such as I needs to look at overseas experience for data. I am in contact with the UK Government for figures but it has been a bit slow.

Mr Saclier might also like to know that the UK Government has paid compensation for vaccine damage “since vaccination campaigns began in 1951”.

There had been various inadequate proposals for compensation packages until 1979 when the government announced a scheme called The 1979 Vaccine Damage Payments Act, which at the time paid a maximum of £10,000 for proven cases of 80 per cent damage.

Some readers will be aware from experience with worker’s compensation claims et cetera just how difficult it is to prove percentage impairment.

Experience tells us that vaccines have never been 100 per cent safe, given that problems occurred from the 1951 outset of vaccination programs in England.

I am grateful for the Independent’s coverage of this issue, especially given another newspaper’s refusal to publish any of my letters, especially as the forced-vaccination issue is a matter of huge public interest.

Renaming schizophrenia SHOULD schizophrenia be renamed to help reduce the stigma that surrounds people with the illness?

The suggestion continues to spark debate.

There is no question that people living with schizophrenia are still stigmatised.

We know that people diagnosed as having schizophrenia die up to 20 years earlier than others in the community and a few years ago schizophrenia was declared the “abandoned illness” by the Schizophrenia Commission in the UK. Now new research, the largest study to explore renaming the illness, has again highlighted the complexities of damaging stigma associated with diagnoses, particularly schizophrenia. After surveying more than 1600 people, researchers in the UK concluded that “any decisions to rename should be made with caution”.

In Japan, after the name was changed, psychiatrists were almost twice as likely to tell their patients about their diagnosis.

Award-winning Australian poet and author Sandy Jeffs has lived with schizophrenia for 38 years.

In a recent essay shortlisted for the Gavin Mooney Memorial Essay Competition, she Ms Jeffs wrote: “One has to be brave to say, ‘I have schizophrenia’.”

What’s needed most is a change of attitude across the community. SANE Australia recently called on the Federal Government to put in place a five-year national stigma reduction campaign.

During year’s Schizophrenia Awareness Week, finishing tomorrow, I again urge the Government to support this initiative so we can build a fair, decent and prosperous Australia in which we all have a place and contribution to make.

TIMES have been tough times for former Noiseworks and INXS front man Jon Stevens lately.

He’s been involved in a series of issues that have provided all the wrong kinds of publicity.

Police were called to a domestic dispute with now-estranged partner Jodhi Meares, he was drawn into the John Singleton restaurant fracas and then struck an elderly pedestrian in a car accident.

On top of all that Stevens had a number of gigs cancelled, including a high-profile show at Sydney’s Star City Casino.

He posted on his Facebook account: “This is one (of) 30 concerts that have been cancelled on me during this already trying time, to say I’m at my lowest is an understatement.

“Thank you to everybody for all your love and support during this challenging time. I really appreciate it.”

But the 30-year veteran singer, songwriter and performer also posted: “Music is my escape from all the bullshit in life”.

And escape is what he’ll be seeking when he takes to the stage during

his Geelong gig at the Sphinx Hotel next week.

Stevens has enjoyed ARIA charttopping success as the front man of legendary Australian bands Noiseworks and INXS. He now has another band on the rise, The Dead Daisies.

Following the success of Noiseworks, Stevens pursued opportunities on a different kind of stage, starring as Judas in the highly acclaimed and successful 1992 Australian musical production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar.

After a studio collaboration in 2000 he became part of INXS as guest vocalist, embarking on a global tour.

Returning to his solo career, Stevens released two solo albums, Changing Times and Testify in 2011, before combining with guitarist David Lowy to write and record what would be the debut album for The Dead Daisies.

During his career Stevens has worked with performers like Elton John, legendary guitarist Slash, ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Jane’s Addiction, Alice in Chains, Coheed and Cambria, Bad Company, Lynyrd Skynyrd and even Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden.

Stevens plays the Sphinx on 30 May.

GEELONG was a vastly different city 140 years ago to what it is today.

Transport was horse and cart and Shank’s pony, street lighting was gas, outhouses were the norm, telephones and electricity were wonders yet to come.

KEY CHANGES to the Sonata have put the seventh generation of the Hyundai sedan in harmony with its classy upscale cousin, the Genesis.

Not only that, the car also takes advantage of some first-rate Australian engineering input.

So what’s not to like about the car? Not much, really.

Maybe the old-fashioned ignition key with no keyless entry and engine start, the awkward foot-operated parking brake in lieu of an electronic one, or lack of factory satellite navigation in the entry-level model.

The new Hyundai Sonata comes in three variants - Active, Elite and Premium.

Active is powered by a 2.4-litre naturally aspirated fourcylinder engine, while Elite and Premium take advantage of a 2.0-litre turbocharged four.

All make use of a six-speed automatic transmission.

Pricewise, the cars score well, with the Active 2.4 GDi opening the innings at $29,990, plus onroad costs.

First wicket down is the Elite 2.0 Turbo GDi at $36,990, while tail-ender, the Premium 2.0 Turbo GDi, follows on at $41,990.

Hyundai owners benefit from lifetime capped price servicing, Australia’s first five-year unlimited kilometre warranty, a threeyear MapCare Plan, complimentary roadside assist for 12 months, plus 1500km complimentary first service.

As mentioned, the Sonata has taken styling cues from Hyundai’s luxury Genesis saloon, featuring Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, the second tranche of the South Korean manufacturer’s award-winning advanced design philosophy derived from nature.

The sedan has the appearance of European luxury with a pronounced grille and wider front air intake making way for smooth flanks and Sonata’s signature beltline.

A flat underbody enables the Sonata to come up with sports car-style aerodynamics in the form of a 0.27 co-efficient of friction, which successfully does its bit for fuel economy.

As with the shape, Hyundai has gone all philosophical with the interior, designed with three core Human Machine Interface principles in mind - safety, by minimising visual distraction; simplicity, by presenting concise and relevant information; and intuitiveness, through improved user interfaces.

Quality cloth upholstery, softtouch materials on the dashboard top and door trims, as well as textured metallic-painted garnish panels complete the stylish interior decor.

With 25mm more rear legroom over its predecessor, the new Sonata is up with its Australian-market competitors, such as Camry and Mazda6, in most dimensions.

Convenience abounds. A nifty touch is the mechanism for folding the rear seat backs to increase the 510 litres of luggage space.

after unlocking the boot electronically with the key fob.

Hyundai Active comes with a touchscreen Multimedia System with 4.3-inch colour display and offers a wide range of connectivity, including USB, AUX, digital iPod, and Bluetooth, and six speakers, including two front tweeters.

A 3.5-inch OLED display among the dash instruments shows average fuel consumption, distance to empty, service intervals and a range of vehicle settings.

Hyundai may regret having made such play on similarities between the Sonata and its superstar Genesis, for a while it has some of the outward glamour of the would-be automotive A-lister, the new mid-size sedan is short on the technical brain power and clobber needed to cosset demanding owners.

Well, what do we expect for half the price? It’s up to the market to focus on looks rather than the latter.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN IT’S ONE of those rivalries where the games always seem close, notwithstanding ladder positions.

Carlton is holding up the ladder while Geelong, at three wins and four losses, is still in touch with the eight.

But none of that will have any relevance when the sides run out onto Etihad Stadium for round eight tonight, declares Cats coach Chris Scott.

He expects the good Carlton to turn up.

“We look at where they played well. Recent history suggests close games and they have a number of high-quality players who have played well against us in the past,” Scott told this week's media conference.

But Geelong’s lapses were still a

concern to the coaching staff, he admitted.

While conceding the lapses were more obvious in the second half of games, he maintained that the inconsistency was across the entire four quarters.

“It’s a challenge for all teams, it’s so close, and we are seeing ebbs and flows.”

An earlier-than expected return of veteran James Kelly could boost Geelong after his delicate surgery two weeks ago, Scott said.

“James Kelly is a chance. The likelihood is we’ll put him in the squad.

"It’s a pleasant surprise -– we need a few of them.”

Scott said Andrew Mackie was “more likely” to play senior footy this weekend and expected Tom Hawkins

to be back after withdrawing with glute soreness against the Swans.

But Scott admitted the long-term foot injury to emerging midfielder Mitch Duncan was a significant blow.

“It hurts the team in the short-term because he’s been one of our best players but it also hurts the team longer term as well because he's such an important part of that developing midfield that we have.

“He’s established himself as one of the really good players in the competition.”

Scott also addressed the issue of the competition for spots in the best 22 between veterans like Jimmy Bartel, Kelly and Mackie and young guns like Jackson Thurlow, Cory Gregson and Darcy Lang.

He conceded making a selection

decision on young versus old could happen this season.

“Those guys are in our best 22 at the moment. They've been unavailable and when fit and available they are in our best team,” Scott affirmed.

“What it means for the next three and five years is a different question.

“We’ve been clear that at some point we're going to have some champion players come to the end of their careers.

“Exactly how it plays out is different for every individual. It becomes a bit more topical when you have a big group of them.

“How do you handle that number of players as opposed to just individuals? We’ve been weighing those questions for some time.”

Bentleigh came away from round 13 with bolstered confidence from a 2-1 win over Oakleigh. The Greens had a scare early on when Oakleigh took a fourth-minute lead but their quality shone through as they composed themselves to patiently get the score on the board.

North Geelong suffered a 2-0 loss at home to fellow relegation-threatened team Werribee.

New signings Yusuf Yusuf and Rudi Saglam were prominent in their first hit-outs with the Warriors, the latter a late inclusion after midfielder Nikola Jurkovic was ruled out just before kick-off when he failed to pull up from an achilles injury last week.

MICHAEL Evans noticed a disturbance on the water as he walked the shore of Wurdee Boluc Reservoir in wet, wild weather last week.

The commotion turned out to be a patch of smelting trout. Michael quickly cast a Fish Arrow soft plastic, hooking a 2kg, 56cm hen brown trout. Michael noted that lure-fishing the reservoir was best on a rising barometer.

Steve Hotez spent a few hours casting lures around Wurdee Boluc’s margins on Saturday morning, banking a chucky redfin of 42cm and 1.5kg and a brown trout of 2.5 kg and 55cm. Steve also used a Fish Arrow soft plastic lure.

Bradley Cox fished the reservoir on Sunday morning, catching two redfin over 40cm.

Further down the western district, the trout fishing really improved at Lakes Purrumbete and Bullen Merri.

Purrumbete produced good numbers of Chinook salmon to 1.2kg for anglers fishing deep with either bait or lure. Trolling lures deep with downriggers or anchoring up to fish lightly weighted baits in a liberal berley trail worked well.

Jake Smith from the Petrel Angling Club caught a nice 1.56kg rainbow trout at Lake Bullen Merri on Saturday morning. Trolling or casting lures close in to shore or on the deep drop offs at first or last light has been successful at the lake.

Eric Box travelled back up to Lake Toolondo early last week to find strong gusting wind and over 30mm of rain. But perseverance paid off when Eric boated five brown trout from 1.6kg to 2.05kg, all taken on mudeye suspended under a float.

Hordes of anglers descended on tuna hot spots during a break in the weather last week. Port Fairy was popular, with the exceptional numbers of tuna holding in close.

Portland continued producing tuna but anglers had to work a bit harder, with fish holding out wide.

Fishing World Geelong’s Michael Moore and Ben McLean ventured down to Port Fairy on Monday, encountering tuna just south of Lady Julia Percy Island. The first lure devoured was a Samaki Pacemaker.

The next few hours of trolling was quiet until the fish started firing up in the afternoon, taking stick bait lures cast into surface commotion. At the end of the day Michael and Ben had caught and released four tuna to 15kg.

Paul Blackborrow was out the same day, boating four tuna in 52m south-south-east of Port Fairy. Paul also had success on smaller lures.

Down at Portland Phil Nelson boated his first southern bluefin tuna after quite a few attempts. Phil caught his fish on a Rapala X-Rap 20.

Other anglers fishing Portland enjoyed excellent bottom-bouncing for flathead, snapper and gummy shark.

Locally, Corio Bay held good numbers of pinkie snapper to 45cm over the past week for anglers casting soft plastics in close around structure. The Western Beach moorings were a great place to start looking.

The tuna down the western district should be hard to go past if the weather holds up over the next week, while Corio Bay should also be worth fishing for pinkies and flathead.

Freshwater anglers could try Lakes Purrumbete and Bullen Merri for Chinook salmon to 2kg on bait or lure.
