IT’S the tale of two Joes.

Joe Hockey in Canberra wants small business owner Joe Coorey in Warwick to help get the country moving.

As part of the Treasurer’s Budget effort to encourage businesses like Joe’s to grow their operations, owners will be able to write off assets worth up to $20,000 until July 2017.

But Joe, a retail veteran, reckons it won’t be sending him on a spending spree just yet.

“There’s a lot we don’t know about the initiative, what can and can’t be claimed, so I would be getting advice first,“ Joe said.

“I don’t like overbuying - there’s no point going into debt just to get a tax incentive.“ But Joe believes it’s good news for the region’s small businesses, particularly those that regularly update machinery, vehicles, office equipment, and electronic devices.

His clothing store - J&J Coorey - has had its doors open since 1924 and he said the costs of running a small business had never been higher.

“I have relatives in various businesses and all of them seem reasonably happy about the incentive, especially those in the food business where you would imagine a lot of equipment can be claimed.“ Joe and wife Jackie spent $90,000 on their shop’s fit-out a few years ago, so they’re on the investing sidelines for now.

Killarney Veterinary Surgery, Stanthorpe Vet Care and Warwick Town and Country Vets are offering lower fees on de-sexing to help combat the over-population of pets in Queensland animal refuges.

Nearly 200 vets across the state are participating in the RSPCA’s threemonth program: Operation: Wanted, reducing de-sexing fees by 20 per cent from next month to the end of August.

Killarney vet David Thomson said de-sexing was not only kind on pets by increasing their life expectancy, but benefited the environment, reducing the number of feral cats and dogs.

“Pet owners in the local area are pretty responsible when it comes to desexing," Mr Thomson said.

“But I wanted to be part of the campaign to help raise awareness as feral and abandoned cats and dogs are a growing problem in Queensland," Mr Thomson said.

Some farmers still refuse to have working dogs de-sexed for misconceived fears that the animal would lose its herding ability, Mr Thomson said.

“If an owner is in two minds because of the costs involved or personal views, then this program is designed to help them make the right decision and save some money at the same time," Mr Thomson said.

De-sexed animals are less likely to contract certain diseases and illnesses such as mammary cancer and uter-

ine infections in females and prostate problems in males, Mr Thomson said.

Stanthorpe Vet Kirstin Widderick said pet owners could save up to $70 on de-sexing a pet during the program.

“It’s never too late to get your dog or cat de-sexed and it makes a huge difference to their quality of life,” Ms Widderick said.

“We see dogs that aren’t de-sexed being badly injured because they go onto the roads and get hit by cars, the females get mated by other dogs and contract infections, while the males end up mauled in fights.

“Often de-sexing is an affordability issue, so programs like this are designed to make it very accessible to everyone.”

event that the community got behind and there had been a lot of baking and preparation around the area in the lead-up to the event.

Di said the event had already raised more than $4000 in the first two years, and they were hoping to add another $1500 from this year’s event.

Meatworks shuts DROUGHT has forced the closure of the Wallangarra Meatworks for a month, leaving 260 jobs in limbo.

The facility, owned by Thomas Foods International, will shut tomorrow after a national lamb shortage dramatically slowed its kill rate in recent weeks.

Chief Executive Officer Darren Thomas told Southern Free Times that the plant’s processing had fallen from 3750 units per day to 2800 during the past month.

“The drought has brought flock numbers down nationally and recent rain brought high sales numbers to an end," Mr Thomas said.

He was confident the meatworks would be able to open in four weeks, with the company currently re-stocking in preparation.

“We believe that four weeks will be enough time to re-stock."

The company would reduce kill numbers to keep the plant open and people employed, Mr Thomas said.

More than half of the meatworks employees are believed to be locals.

It is the second time that the facility has closed due to drought in the past six years.

The plant laid off 180 employees in 2009 before the familyowned Thomas Foods International

took over in 2010.

Thomas Foods International has other plants at Murray Bridge and Lobethal in South Australia and Tamworth in New South Wales, which remain open.

While it is a major blow to Wallangarra - one of the poorest postcodes in Queensland - the closure of meat processing facilities is not uncommon.

Employee entitlement agreements vary depending on whether a worker is full or part-time, but workers in the meat processing industry can generally be stood down with just 24 hours’ notice.

In brief Policewoman punched A POLICEWOMAN was allegedly punched by a 20-year-old woman while attending a noise complaint in Warwick.

Police attended a Hope Street residence following the complaint on Thursday, when the woman became aggressive during her arrest.

Warwick Police Acting Senior Sergeant Shane Reid said an officer was punched, pinched and scratched during the incident and sustained bruising to her arms and torso.

“Fortunately the officer wasn’t badly injured. It’s a risk of any job that police go to and is more likely to happen when a attending domestic violence call-out, but in this case it was a simple noise complaint."

Act Sen Sgt Reid said assaults on police officers occurred on average about once a fortnight in the Warwick region.

The woman was charged with public nuisance, two counts of obstructing police officers, and one count of assault to a police officer.

She will appear in Warwick Magistrates' Court in June.

A rental property at Junabee was destroyed by fire.

MORE than $2000 worth of cash was stolen during a break-in at a takeaway shop in Warwick.

Employees arrived at R&K Fork and Takeway in McEvoy on Thursday morning to find the store had been robbed and ransacked.

The offender or offenders are believed to have climbed a fence and forced open the store’s sliding door to gain entry.

A substantial amount of stock, the front door frame and the till were damaged during the breakin.

Cigarettes and chewing gum were also stolen. Police are continuing investigations.

Teens buck solitary trend THE art of face-to-face conversation is alive and well on the Southern Downs.

That’s despite experts warning that Queenslanders are at risk of social isolation, spending less time with friends and family in person than any other state or territory.

Queenslanders are also more likely to communicate with their friends and family over social media, according to a study of 1200 Australians, conducted

by Pure Profile.

Not surprisingly, teens had the highest number citing social media as their preferred way of communicating, according to the research.

But staff at Warwick State High School and the Scots PGC College don’t believe their students behavior reflect the findings.

Scots PGC College principal Simon Shepherd said social media was just a small part of student communication in and out of the classroom, with strict rules around its access.

“Students use electronic de-

Not abolished REGARDING several recent letters concerning the Australian National Anthem, it may be helpful to realise that the present one “Advance Australia Fair”, was established by the Commonwealth Parliament around 30 years ago. The original, however, was most emphatically not abolished, and as such, “God Save the Queen” remains officially Australia’s Royal Anthem, side by side with the national anthem “Advance Australia Fair”.

Also, Australia’s national existence, established under the British Throne in AD 1788, predates the Federal Commonwealth Parliament by well over a century, and during that 100 years before federation, Australia’s National Anthem was “God Save the Queen”.

Song has its place RE: SFT, 7 May ‘Is this treason?’

As stated in letters 14 May, ’Historic offence’ and ‘Fair cop’; on 19 April 1984 the GovernorGeneral issued a proclamation declaring that Advance Australia Fair was to be the official national anthem.

At the same time, God Save the Queen was designated the Royal National Anthem, to be played at occasions attended by members of the Royal Family. During the Killarney RSL Anzac Day services the royal anthem is played at the 9.30am service.

The national RSL has always protected our flag and continues to swear allegiance to the Monarch. The Australian National Flag is considered part of our national heritage and is used throughout the League as widely as possible. It expresses our identity, acknowledges our British settlement, and symbolises the unity of our states and territories and our geographical location. Not from me THE letter (‘Fair cop’, SFT, 14 May) was not written by me. There were two letters taking Ian McLeod to task for what he said in a previous edition of the SFT regarding the singing of Advance Australia Fair as being the national anthem.

The two writers: M. Wagner and the one attributed to me were obviously written for the purpose of denigrating the British and the singing of God Save the Queen.

The authors of the two letters should do some historical research. I won’t enter into an argument on the merits of Advance Australia Fair as opposed to God Save the Queen. However, the writers should study up on where Australia got its political history and freedoms. That is, if they care about such issues. It was Magna Carta, the English Bill of rights and the Act of Settlement which passed from Britain to us and launched our nation after being settled by the British over 200 years ago. Where would we be if not for those documents? Fact is, there are those now in governments, media and institutions of “learning” who want to take us back to an era before those documents were written and which established the bedrock of government and freedom for all the nations that emerged from Britain via colonisation.

IN REFERENCE to the Peter Andrewartha and M. Wagner letters (Southern Free Times, 14.05.15) I say yes education is a most important part of life, and especially knowledge of our excellent constitution and constitutional monarchy.

Australia is still a constitutional monarchy with Her Majesty the Queen holding the Executive Power of the Commonwealth (Section 61) and also the power to disallow any (or all) laws within one year from the Governor-General’s Assent in the Queen’s name (Sections 59 and 58).

This sounds to myself like the Queen is a very important person and should be respected, looked up to and treated with great honour.

Within a constitutional monarchy there can only be one national anthem (not two) and that must be God Save the Queen, if it is desired at memorial services (or anywhere else), after God Save the Queen is played, then it is acceptable to play a national song like Advance Australia Fair after the real national anthem. To both of you fellows there was no referendum (Section 128) held to change the national anthem, therefore 19 April 1984 was just an unlawful nonsense, and executive decision worthy of no obedience.

I can assure you M. Wagner that republicanism was alive in Australia even prior to 1850, however nobody wanted it, that is why our very clever forefathers wrote the Constitution in the words that they used.

Peter Andrewartha you are very wrong, I am a patriotic Australian, showing loyalty to our gracious Queen is not “grovelling to all things British” and I do not think there is much left to be proud of, our uncontrolled politicians have nearly destroyed everything our honourable defence forces fought through two world wars to preserve for us all, this is very, very, very sad.

The Constitution is the supreme law of Australia; no person can avoid it or breach it, especially politicians.

Mander boosts the chaplaincy cause

By TANIA PHILLIPS A BEAUTIFUL dinner, an interesting guest speaker - and all in the name of good cause, what more could you want?

Former NRL referee turned politician, Tim Mander, will be guest speaker at the Granite Belt Chaplaincy Fund-raising Dinner on Wednesday 10 June from 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

The dinner will be held at Happy Valley Retreat, 146 Glenlyon Drive in Stanthorpe with special guest Tim Mander MP. School chaplains are in the prevention and rescue business.

They’re helping students find a better way to deal with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness to drug abuse, stress and anxiety.

This entertaining evening will include a three-course meal, lucky door prizes, raffles, a charity auction and live entertainment

Century of Anzac

By JOYCE MARSH (WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT) THE clock turned back as the people of Urbenville gathered to remember a moment of history 100 years ago.

On Sunday 26 April 2015, the community of Urbenville came together to celebrate the centenary, 100 years of serving the community, of the St Marks Anzac War Memorial Anglican Church in Beaury Street, Urbenville.

St Marks was originally dedicated on 25 April 1915, the day of the Gallipoli landing by Anzacs.

On this windy day, 100 people attended a special church service that was officiated by Archdeacon Sally Miller, Deacon Ron Miller and retiring local priest, Reverend Thea Archinal.

Visitors included Tenterfield Shire Council’s mayor Peter Petty and councillors Gary Verri, Mary Leahy, Toni Hull, Carol Schiffman and past parishioners who then commemorated the Anzac tradition by the planting and dedication of a Lone Pine seedling (sourced from the Australian War Museum) in the church grounds.

All then joined for a luncheon at the Urbenville Bowls Club.

The the original small wooden church served the community of Urbenville faithfully until a freakish whirlwind blew the roof off in the spring of 1963.

Plans had already been in the offing to construct a new church and the original one to be relocated to the rear of the land and be utilised as a hall.

The destruction of the old church altered these plans. On 25 April 1965 the Anzac connection continued, with the foundation stone for the new building being laid.

How pleasant it was to see Reg Spencer of Woodenbong, the builder of the new church, being a part of the celebrations. The new church has continued serving Urbenville through all the changes within the community, Upper Clarence parish and the Grafton diocese.

As on the day, a display containing the original church door and other items supplied by the local historical society is present in the foyer of the church.

This display will remain for viewing on Sundays until mid-June.

Record crowds at picnic races

THE Warwick Picnic Race Day on the weekend was the best yet with record crowds and rave reviews, organisers said.

It was a day of fancy duds, fillies and the pursuit of small fortunes at the event which clocked its 121st year on Saturday.

Warwick Turf Club secretary Kristen Doyle said admissions hit 1000, with more than 600 racegoers in trackside marquees.

“It was one of the biggest crowds we have had at the Warwick Picnic Races,“ Ms Doyle said.

“The feedback has been that it’s one of the best Warwick Picnic Races people have been too, they loved the band, they loved fashions on the field, and of course the actual races.“ The style police chose an on-trend graphic black and white outfit for top honours in the fashions comp.

It was worn by Annie Barclay from Warwick who was named the day’s best-dressed lady, while Rose Betts from Condobolin was runner-up.

Both left the stage loaded up with bags of prizes from Rose City Shoppingworld.

The next race day in the region is the Killarney Cup on 27 June.

TENTERFIELD is a small town with a big heart.

More than 100 residents from the town of 3000 are volunteers, some driving hundreds of kilometres a week to help out their community.

As the nation pats its Good Samaritans on the back to celebrate National Volunteers Week, Tenterfield Shire Council pitched in to say thanks to its philanthropic residents.

Dozens of volunteers turned up to a four-hour hotdog marathon in their honour last week, attended by Tenterfield mayor Peter Petty and representatives from Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce’s office.

Council spokesman James Ruprai said school kids as young 17, and men and women in their eighties were among Tenterfield’s dedicated volunteers.

“The town’s volunteers deliver meals, visit the elderly, run the cinema, support the hospital, maintain parks and gardens and many, many other activities,” Mr Ruprai said.

They also assisted in running the Aboriginal Advisory, School of Arts, the Sir Henry Parkes Museum and the Tenterfield Theatre, he said.

“Volunteers travel in from all over the shire, some from up to 135 kilometres away.”

Countdown checklist to retire THERE is currently no compulsory retirement age, but some of the things to think about before retirement include work, expectations, lifestyle, money and estate planning.

To help prepare for the retirement lifestyle it is important to make a checklist.

The check list can start 15-20 years before retirement.

At this point those considering retirement should start to think about what to expect from retirement, where they want to live when they retire, and any new skills that may be useful in retirement.

It is important to develop financial plans (speak to a financial adviser if needed) based on personal and financial goals.

Other things to look at doing include volunteering and other interesting activities, preparing or revising a will or organising an enduring power of attorney and an advance health directive.

Five to 10 years before retirement it is import to revise financial plans, keeping in mind how much money is needed for retirement.

Other factors to consider are how to reduce any gap between how much money is needed to live on and how much will be available for retirement.

Also under consideration at this point are things such as a possible retirement age, retirement investment options, superannuation plans, tax issues and what government assistance is available.

At this time potential retirees could try a few new activities before retirement and make new friends and contacts.

It is also a time to think about what skills can be used to earn extra income during retirement and if these skills need to be updated.

About a year or two before retirement is the time to review financial plans and budgets with a firmer idea of retirement plans.

Getting ready to go into retirement.

At this time intending retirees can also try a few new activities like volunteering to help make new friends and contacts.

With a year to go retirees are also encouraged to talk about their retirement plans with their employer and think about working part-time during the last few years of their working life.

A superannuation fund can advise if there are any repercussions.

At this point retirees should also be considering the timing of their retirement - can they afford to retire when they planned or do they need to

stay working for longer?

Other things to consider at this time include whether the family home needs any major repairs or maintenance to meet needs in retirement, does a workshop or shed need to be built for planned retirement activities, does the car need replacing.

If travel is planned now is the time to start collecting brochures and look for less expensive times to travel.

At the six month point before retirement retirees should look to review their financial plan again and budget to make changes.

At this point they can get their superannuation fund statements and review any life insurance schemes.

Once again it is important at this time to review the planned retirement date to check that it is still suitable.

Talk with to family, have a thorough health check and review health insurance.

Three months before retirement check eligibility for the age pension.

Intending retirees can apply three months in advance.

What’s On Brass is ripe at uncorking BRASS and Wine, Robert Channon Wines’ annual Jazz and band day, is on again this Saturday, 23 May. Admission is free and it’s a day to come out to the winery and enjoy food, wine and free musical entertainment.

The Stanthorpe RSL Brass Band will be playing as usual and this year will be producing a mighty and stirring sound.

The band had dwindled to less than a dozen players not long ago but with the infectious enthusiasm of new band director Aaron Buchanan there are now more than 30 players, all ready to play their hearts out for the audience on Saturday.

Jazz and big band music will be in the hands of new visitors to the winery, the Downlands College Stage Band from Toowoomba.

“The music is outdoors, but we can go indoors into our Swigmore Hall if it rains or snows,” Robert Channon said.

“There is no admission charge and there will be a barbecue running as well as lunches, coffee and cakes from

By CASEY O’CONNOR WHEN Matt Moylan slotted a field-goal on Monday night, breaking the 10-all deadlock to give the Panthers a one-point win over the Sea Eagles, it brought down the curtain on a thrilling round of football.

Fans were treated to golden points, golden tries and a host of tough games where results could have gone either way.

The top of the NRL table is as crowded as Central Station at peak hour with four teams sitting on 14 points. Melbourne leads the way but the news is not as good for Sea Eagles fans. Their team has bottom billing behind the Eels.

As we head into Origin season, the results of the split rounds could have a major impact on the outcome in September. Most teams face a real test of depth and strength of character. The Bunnies and Eels go head-to-head in the first of the four fixture games in round 11.

The Bunnies came back from AAMI Park last weekend empty handed, having never won at the venue. They may not have got the points but there were some positive signs for Bunnies fans. They bounced back to within four points of Melbourne after trailing by 14 points at the break and held their opponents scoreless in the second half. Penalties and errors cost the Bunnies dearly.

Without Inglis on Friday night (and perhaps others) they need to dig deep. Halfback Adam Reynolds looks set to be sidelined for up to four or five weeks with a thumb injury and they, (Souths) have a poor record without him. The Bunnies must find a solution quickly or face the prospect of dropping further games.

The Eels went agonisingly close to a win against the Warriors. The Warriors try in extratime was cloaked in controversy but provided a thrilling end to a great game. It was a game of attrition with Ryan Hoffman severely concussed in the opening minutes and both hookers seriously injured.

The Eels coach has indicated that there will be no recall for Chris Sandow despite his manof-the-match performance in NSW Cup game last weekend.

Parra is likely to be close to full strength for this game however Wil Hopoate is set to be named in the Blues line-up. It is a big call but I feel the big forward pack at the Bunnies could dominate here.

The Cowboys were sensational at Dairyfarmers against the Broncos. A perfect completion rate set up their win, making it seven wins on the trot.

In past seasons, NQ has struggled when JT, Matt

Scott and Tamou are on Origin duty however this is a different Cowboys side. Several in-form players are set to be overlooked for Origin, and Michael Morgan and several others will be out to keep the club's winning streak intact against the Tigers who desperately need a win.

After their loss to the Knights, it is difficult to see where a win is coming from for Tigers fans.

The Dragons dominated in the kicking department, making life difficult for the Raiders from the outset. Despite showing plenty of potential, it is time for Jack Wighton to increase his involvement and step up if the Raiders are to continue their climb up the ladder.

Despite being down on manpower, the Doggies will have the services of their captain James Graham, who took no part in last week’s game, after he was knocked out in the opening minutes.

Bulldogs fans will be hoping he makes the difference here but an unchanged Raiders line-up will be difficult to toss.

The Broncos lost no admirers despite their loss at Dairyfarmers. It was one of the most entertaining games this season with many players liking it to semi final intensity. Five key Broncos are expected to be named in the Maroon squad. It is a situation Wayne Bennett has dealt with many times in the past, and we have seen plenty of young Broncos getting their chance in the Broncos line-up over past weeks.

weekend with an impressive victory over the Tigers and have every chance to add another win here. Bennett will no doubt get a cool reception when he returns to Hunter Stadium, but it is unlikely to be of concern to either himself or his team. The Broncos are up against it here, but if they are to be contenders in September these are games they need to win.

The elephant in the room this round is State of Origin. There are unlikely to be any surprises when Mal Meninga officially announces the Queensland team on Tuesday afternoon. It is anticipated Laurie Daley will announce up to five changes in the Blue’s line-up with NSW players unavailable due to injury and suspension while poor form is set to rule out others.

Origin One is set to be another epic encounter.

South of the border, the Blue army will be confident they can begin the 2015 campaign on the right note.

There is no tougher cauldron than Origin, and most tipsters will be following their heart, and I am no different. The Maroons players will bring outstanding personal form into this game but there will be no complacency after losing the 2014 series. I expect the old firm to exact their revenge and get the job done here on the way to another series win.

THERE will only be one thing on sporting fans’ minds this week as we all prepare for next week’s State of Origin. Queensland will head deep into enemy territory in an effort to draw first blood in this year’s battle for the Origin Shield.

There were no major surprises when the official Maroon side was announced on Tuesday afternoon. There were the anticipated changes to the Blues line-up.

In-form Cowboys player Michael Morgan has been rushed into the Maroon squad to shadow Daley Cherry Evans who is under a cloud with a shoulder injury.

The build up to Origin thus far has been a little less frenetic than in past seasons and ticket sales at ANZ Stadium have been slow.

Despite this, game two in Melbourne is looking like a sell-out and tickets to game three are as rare as hen’s teeth. Not sure what that says about those Blues supporters.

There are plenty of reputations at stake in game one and the tried and true Maroon firm (Dad’s Army according to those South of the border) will need to be at their very best.

If last weekend’s NRL games were any indication, we are in for another sensational game on Wednesday night. So strap yourselves in folks and hang on as age and experience are challenged by youthful exuberance all mixed with bucket loads of super talented individuals.

CLASS OF '65-'66 INSPIRES WINNING PERFORAMNCE THE Collegians Under 18 premiership class of 1965-'66 reunited last weekend for a special milestone - their 50-year reunion. Eighteen members of the playing group were on hand to celebrate the event. Returning to Warwick for the reunion, Wayne Bennett recalled fondly his Under playing days under his uncle and coach Eddie Brosnan who had a profound effect on Bennett and many of the other players.

The reunion was organised by Mike Keim and his wife and on hand to cut the special anniversary cake were Betty Murphy wife of the late Des Murphy and Cathie Brosnan wife of Eddie Brosnan Jnr. The presence of the past players obviously inspired the current crop of Cowboys players who made it three wins from four games against Dalby. The Cowboys notched up wins in the A grade and Reserve Grade and C Grade. Unfortunately the Under 18s went down 18-12 in a close game.

The A Grade game was a tough and physical encounter and at half time the scores were locked at 6-all. The Cowboys lifted in the second half to come away with a convincing 40-16 victory.

Dalby sit at the top of the reserve Grade ladder and the 38-14 win was a major upset.

TOP PERFORMANCE FROM LAWER JASON Lawer showed that he is a more than capable golfer on Saturday, returning 70 off the stick for a nett score of 66. It was a result good enough to win the Stanthorpe Golf club stroke event. Family work and other sporting commitments mean that Jason does not get as much time on the fairways as he would like but plenty of potential even collecting the balls for the Birdies nest and his approach at 1/10. Rob Reeves also had a good round, finishing in second spot.

Stephen Hooper collected best pin shot at the men’s 3/12. Richard Reardon held the pin at 17 and the pro-pin at 5/14. It was left to Matt Waterworth to claim the pro-pin at 9/18.

Madeline Jarman returned a nett 75 to win the ladies event, one shot clear of runner- up, Lyn Ludlow. Lyn also took the pin shot for the ladies at 3/12 while Hannah Reeves had best approach at 17.

There is only one round remaining in this year’s Club Championships and that will be played next Saturday. It is hard to imagine Dylan Barraclough getting beaten in the A grade and overall. At this point he looks a certainty.

There are challengers emerging from everywhere for the B Grade title which is a much closer affair. Bill Pyne leads the field but Mark McCosker and Aaron Simmers are hot on his heels.

Greg Yap has a one shot lead in C grade. He is narrowly ahead of four players who are closing.

Both B and C Grades are far too close to call at this point.

The draw for the final round of the championships has been posted on the board at the club.

Places have been allocated for players who have not competed in all championship rounds and who wish to play. Add your name to the list.

The final day of the championships will be sponsored by Geoff Patti.

LOCAL GALLOPERS POPULAR WITH PUNTERS LOCAL gallopers enjoyed success at the Warwick turf club’s Picnic Race meeting last Saturday.

Punters sent Rip Rip Woodchip out $2 favourite in the final event of the Warwick Picnic race meeting. They were right on the money when the Easy Rocking six-year -old who is trained on the track by Garry Schwenke saluted in the 1100 metre Grove Juice Squeeze BenchMark 70 Handicap.

Earlier in the day, the John Collins-trained Starwood got followers of the locally trained horses off on the right foot when he won the second event on the five-race program. Ridden

by Toowoomba jockey Kenji Yoshida, the threeyear-old was well tried by punters starting equal favourite at $4.

In the opening event, the Toowoomba-trained three-year-old Ole Pablo having his first start since December narrowly defeated Starbyte and Mrs Boole to claim his maiden win.

Gatton trainer Carolyn Alladyce made a successful trip to Warwick. Alladyce saddled up two runners in the QTIS Maiden Plate, and they finished first and third. Starting at the good odds of $7, Arkroyal streeted the field to win by over six lengths from Jamoby Girl and stablemate Come Over Joe. The Peter Overell owned and trained Steel to Heel had not started since 18 April when he finished well down the track to Tellzcay but made amends for that run with a win in the Ergon Energy Benchmark 55 event on Saturday. The sixyear-old beat a strong 11-horse field to win by over a length.

Winner of the event was Rhys Farrell the club’s newest 18 hole playing junior who returned a score of nett 69. Farrell finished one shot clear of runner-up Shane McKenzie. In the ball run down, Tim Sutton (70), Gordon Kerr (71), Ken Burley, Brendon Jones and Ron Simon (72), and John Brack (73) each collected a ball. Nearest to the pins went the way of Shane McKenzie (5), Dion Phillps (7), Geoff Hinze on (9 and 16), Charlie Morrison (11) and David Craggs (13).

WATTLES HIT BACK THE Wattles A Grade side were back to their best last weekend to post a convincing 52-22 win over the Goondiwindi Boars after suffering a shock loss to Oakey at their previous outing.

Wattles were impressive as they put on 10 tries against the visitors. The home side led 32-6 at the half time break. In the second half, Goondiwindi put some respectability into the score line with three tries in quick succession to trail 36-22 with 20 minutes remaining. Wattles regrouped and put the game away with three more tries. Matt Duggan led the way for Wattles in a top performance.

The Wattles Reserve Grade won their game 26-24, but went down 50-18 in under 18s. Wattles C Grade side, Millmerran Rams notched up anther big win - the score 50-12.

This weekend Wattles take on Highfields who are sitting in second place on the TRL ladder just two points ahead of them.

WHEREDEHELLAEREWE THE “Wheredehellaerewe Trading Post did a roaring trade with the monthly meat and fur event at Inglewood SSAA last weekend.

Best meat man of the day was Ray Dudgeon, followed by visitor Jake Thompson and Tom Donald.

Another Inglewood visitor, Bindi Skeels joined in the fun.

In other club news, Inglewood SSAA Qld received the materials for the new cover over pistol bays. The funding was provided by a grant from SSAA Qld. Blask Engineering came to the party, providing an excellent quote for the materials.

Local Sport CHANGES TO RUMBLE THERE are changes afoot for the Warwick Golf Club’s Red Rooster Rumble. The popular nine hole format of RRR will now run from Monday to Friday and will be open to members and social players. The change will give those people who are ruled out on Friday’s due to other commitments an opportunity play. Costs will vary slightly as there will only be nearest to the pins on Fridays. Monday to Thursday fees will be $7 for members and $17 for non-members. Friday’s fee remains at $8 for members and $18 for non members. Of course, the other benefit is that the prize pool for the week should be greater.

The winner of last Friday’s RRR was Doug Wilson with 21 points ahead of runner-up Mick O’Dea on 20 points. Run down balls to Mal Crawford on, Gerry Morrissey 19, and Bruce Knight (19). Mal Crawford claimed the only pin at 13.

NEW RULES AND REGULATIONS OUTLINED QUEENSLAND Boating and Fisheries officer Paul Kuhn outlined some of the rule changes for anglers at the Warwick Fish Stocking AGM last Sunday.

The rule changes allow anglers to have only two (2) silver perch in their possession. They also include a closed season for Murray Cod in the Condamine River during September, October and November to allow the cod to breed.

Murray Cod can still be caught during the closed season in the stocked impoundments (Leslie and Connolly Dams).

Set lines are now banned. Anglers can use six fishing lines, but must remain within 50 metres of them.

Bait traps in the rivers must have only a 5cm rigid opening. To reduce the size of current 10cm trap openings, cut a plastic bottle and fix the neck into the opening. Traps with 10cm opening are still permitted in impoundments.

The election of officer bearers was held, resulting in the following officer bearers: president, Roger Martin; vice-president, Barry Hounslow; secretary-treasurer, Ed Kemp; assistant treasurer, Bob Reid and Ken Martin and Rowan Osborne were elected on to the committee.

Life membership was awarded to the president, Roger, for his outstanding service to the club over many years. The club now has nine life members.

CUTTERS FIND FORM AFTER a disappointing start to the 2015 season, the Killarney Cutters bounced back last weekend to defeat the Tenterfield Tigers in a thriller.

The Tigers again started the game slowly and the Cutters took full advantage of their opponents' errors. Leading the charge for the Cutters were captain coach John Trindall and Dion Galloway who looked dangerous with every touch of the ball. It was a much-improved performance from the defending premiers, who showed they will be in the mix this season if they can keep players on the paddock. Six Tigers players scored in an all-

The lead changed several times throughout the game, and the Tigers were not without their chances.

Josh Lucas crossed for three tries for the Tigers. Other tries came from Brown and Kelly. It was the Tigers first loss this season.

In the Ladies league Tag game, the Tigerettes showed their class and experience with a massive 94-nil win over the Killarney girls.

It is the Killarney girls first season in the competition, and they were simply outclassed by the more experienced Tenterfield.

This weekend the Tigers host the Rams and Killarney face another tough test when they host the Gremlins.

BIG CROWD ANTICIPATED THE Wallangarra Golf Club is expecting a big crowd this Saturday for the popular Frank Hodgson Memorial Day, a single stableford event.

Last Saturday, the club held a two ball Ambrose event. P. Williams and W. Davis combined well to sneak away with a win a whisker ahead of K. Williams and B. McMillan.

S. Williams was all alone snaring the only pin shot on nine.

PERFECT CONDITIONS THE Croquet Association players appreciated the perfect conditions last week as they hit the green.

Val Shephard and Andrea Denkewitz (23) defeated Margaret Dickenson and Carol Verwey (19) in their match up. Jenny Tunbridge played well with a break of four, and together with her partner Pat Schnoor scored a 26-16 win over opponents Joy Newman and Grace Howard.

Monday and Wednesday last week. On Monday, there were two great games of doubles. Shirley Evans and Elaine Brown began very smartly, holding a strong lead early in the game. Shirley scored another “hoop in one” while Elaine had her best ever score of eight hoops. Their opponents Shirley Page and Judy Lock fought back very well to close the score, only losing by a very narrow margin.

The second game was a very close affair, with all players on an even number of hoops until the last shot, when Judy Lock scored the winning shot to give the Lock Evans partnership the win, but not before Shirley Evans scored another “hoop in one” in this game.

On Wednesday two groups played doubles.

The scores in the three short games were very even. Four players snared a “hoop in one”; were Lynette Haselgrove (in her very first game), Shirley Page, Shirley Evans and Bill Golding. This used to be a rarity but with players constantly improving it becoming quite normal.

It was the gateballers turn last Friday, and each week they are noticing a steady increase in numbers. Pat Schnoor was in great form hardly missing a shot. GREMLINS BIG WIN KYLE Marsh turned on a master class last weekend at Sullivan Oval in the Gremlins clash with the Wallangarra. Marsh bagged two tries and made good ground with every touch in a man-ofthe-match performance as the Gremlins ran away with a 64-8 win over the Rams.

The home side dominated play with nine players finding the try line as they piled on the points.

Jason Wilmot was on song with the boot, converting 10 of 11 to add the extras. The big win now puts the Gremlins at the top of the BRL table.

The Rams who have shown better form this season must now regroup as they prepare to play Tenterfield at Rugby league Park this weekend.

The Ladies League Tag game was a much closer game with the Gremlinettes sneaking home with a 6-4 win in a thrilling game.

Scarlett Hawksworth scored an early try for the home side and successfully converted her own try. The lone point scorer for the Ramettes was Crystal Duroux. In a really close tussle, the Stanthorpe girls hung on grimly for the narrow but exciting win.

A nine-a-side Reserve Grade game was played for the first time on Saturday. Stanthorpe made it three out of three for the afternoon with a 36-4 win.

WINNING FEELING BRIAN Brown and Phil Davis had that winning feeling last weekend. Not only did they score a 25-17 win over Chris Stratford and Attilio Zamprogno in the social bowls event; the pair wrapped up the win by walking away with the raffles. A reminder to members that deposits for the July trip to Evans Heads are now required.

Results of the Turkey Triples will be available next week. A reminder that it is Ladies Day today (Thursday 21 May).

This Saturday is the $100 Trophy social bowls commencing at 1pm, and the club Challenge will be played on 27-28 June.

Around the grounds SOUTHERN CROSS BOWLS THERE are no results of play for last Thursday and Sunday as the compiler couldn’t get into the club house to get the cards.

WARWICK EAST BOWLS ON Saturday, one game of fours was played which resulted in E. Diery, V. Nelson, N. Hassum and G. Farmer defeating G. Shelley, N. Farmer, N. Wickham and A. Wickham 21-7. On the previous Saturday, two rounds of pairs were played. In the first round, E. Diery and N. Hassum defeated G. Shelley and V. Nelson 14-5, while R. Philps and N. Wickham defeated P. Dipplesman and B. Lee 12-6. In the second round, R. Philps and N. Wickham defeated E. Diery and N. Hassum 15-5, with G. Shelley and V. Nelson defeating P. Dipplesman and B. Lee 11-2.

This Saturday there will be mixed social bowls, with president Bill providing prizes. Visitors are welcome. On Saturday 6 June, the club singles competition will kick off. Nominate by adding your name to the list or otherwise notifying the club. Finally, on Sunday 7 June, we will be hosting a group for barefoot bowls and sandwich lunch, with play beginning at 10 am. A grey morning continually threatening shower with a changeable wind that settled later in the day. Got away without the rain and the sun poked through now and again. A special mention for Bob Tyllyer who shot a string of three shots into a group of about half an inch, finally demolishing the centre of the target and the pin. WARWICK BOWLS MEN’S SECTION THE Men’s section have been having a very busy time, numbers have been very good, considering members playing away in Championships games etc, which naturally makes a difference to our numbers on the green. Haven’t heard any results for these away competitions, but hope they have been successful.

On 13 May, Jackpot Pairs was down one rink. The jackpot did not go off, so there’s a great jackpot of $130 to be won next month. The Jackpot Board will be cleaned off straight after the end of play each month, so don’t forget to put your team names up asap or you might miss out.
