Ellie spoke about her initial hesitation, over fear it would affect her brother’s football career.

THE annual Pride Cup is fast becoming the premier event in the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football Netball League calendar.

In a huge tick of approval for the burgeoning event, a host of dignitaries and a huge, enthusiastic crowd attended last Sunday’s clash at the Yarra Glen recreation reserve.

Included in the program was the pre-game luncheon, which Joy FM broadcast live. It featured a host of guest speakers, including former Victorian Premier and present Beyondblue chairman, Jeff Kennett.

Mr Kennett claimed the event as a “stake-in-the-ground” moment for the region.

“It’s not a crime to be gay or have a mental illness,” he said.

“It’s our time to put an end to discrimination against racism and sexuality.”

In addressing the audience, Mr Kennett noted the link between mental illness and the challenges faced by the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and inter-sex (LGBTI) community.

Mr Kennett said the clash between Yarra Glen and Warburton-Millgrove was a fantastic initiative, because it celebrated diversity and inclusion in sport.

The event was initially instigated by coach Dean de Munk and assistant coach, Sam Hills, after Yarra Glen footballer, Jason Ball, came out as a gay footballer in 2012.

Personal friend and supporter of Ball, former Carlton star Brock McLean, was also a special guest.

McLean told the ‘Mail’ it wouldn’t be long before the initiative grew into a national event.

“I feel quite strongly about this issue and initially didn’t know how to get my ideas out,” he said.

“I heard about Jason’s story and it wasn’t long before we became friends.

“This is an issue that needs greater attention.”

Their buns are in the pink

By VICTORIA STONEMEADOWS FOR the fifth year in a row, Bakers Delight at Ferntree Plaza is participating in the Pink Bun fund-raising campaign.

Kate Craven, the franchisee for Ferntree Plaza Bakers Delight, says she cannot believe the level of local support.

“I want to give a huge thankyou to the local community,” she said.

“A lot of people don’t think of Bakers Delight stores as small businesses and think all the money we make just goes back to the company. We are not just a franchise and we do it because we love it.”

Ms Craven’s bakery has raised about $10,000 to support the Breast Cancer Network Australia over the past five years.

“We hope to raise about $2000 this year,” Ms Craven said.

All proceeds of the sale of Pink Finger Buns will be donated directly to BCNA to support Australians with breast cancer.

The Pink Bun Campaign will run from 11 May to 3 June at Bakers Delight bakeries across Australia, including Ferntree Plaza, Mountain Gate, Boronia Junction, Boronia Mall and Knox City.

SPEAKING clearly to a triple zero operator as his father was struck by sudden onset paralysis, 14-year-old Troy Lyall displayed bravery in what was a very scary situation.

His courage was commended last week with a prestigious Junior Triple Zero Hero award handed down by the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA).

At the start of last year, Troy, then 13 years of age, called triple zero when his dad Hugh Lyall suddenly became paralysed on one side of his body and experience vision problems.

The brave Emerald Secondary College student dialled triple zero and carefully assisted the emergency operators in carrying out a stroke test.

He was home alone with his dad and six-year-old sister at the time.

Troy’s father, who was later found to have suffered a major stroke, was able to watch his courageous son accept the award presented by Minister for Emergency Services Jane Garrett and comedian Dave Hughes on Wednesday 13 May. “He was a bit overwhelmed by it all and felt proud,” Troy’s mother, a nurse, said of Hugh.

Sheep mauled to death

By RUSSELL BENNETT A GEMBROOK family is distraught after a vicious attack from what they believe to be a pack of dogs left four of their pet sheep mauled to death.

Joe Wardale was driving his tractor across his Boyd Road property recently and saw one of his sheep lying motionless at the bottom of the hill.

“It was highly unusual,” he said.

“About halfway up the paddock I could see the alpaca and one lamb left so I knew something was wrong. There’d usually be five sheep and one alpaca.

“I locked the dogs up and went back down and, just by skirting around, I found two more sheep. They’d been destroyed and one lamb I didn’t actually find.”

Mr Wardale said he then saw three dogs “black and tan kelpie-type dogs” - on his property the next morning.

“When I saw them I would have said they weren’t wild dogs, but in saying that there are a lot of wild dogs out in the bush,” he said.

“They just didn’t look wild and they weren’t overly scared.

“Normally once a wild dog sees you it’s gone.

I ran out on the deck and yelled and they took off, but it wasn’t instant.

“They seemed too used to humans to be wild.”

Mr Wardale’s fear is that the three dogs may belong to other local residents, and if so “they’ve got three dogs like these that would have come home covered in blood”.

“You don’t want this to happen, and if it’s wild dogs doing it it’s harder to tackle, but if these are pets then people are just letting their dogs roam,” Mr Wardale said.

“It wasn’t long ago our dogs got out for the day and we were beside ourselves.

“Things happen - dogs get out, but this was a frenzy.”

Mr Wardale said he had hired someone to lay a series of traps on his property in case the dogs returned, but they haven’t yet.

Mr Wardale has been in touch with both the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) and the Cardinia Shire Council in relation to the issue.

The council’s compliance services co-ordinator Shannon Maynard said: “Mr Wardale contacted council regarding the attack and has

spoken with compliance services officers a number of times.

“At this stage it remains unclear whether the dogs are wild or domestic.

“Mr Wardale has placed flyers in the community and has also given council details of a property where it is believed dogs matching his description of the attacking dogs may be being kept. The matter remains an open investigation.

“We have a dog trap which can be hired, if dogs are problematic and property owners do not

know where they come from.

“Private landholders should contact DEPI, or privately deal with nuisance animals as they would any pest animals - by contacting a licensed pest controller.”

Council officers are responsible with enforcing the Domestic Animals Act, which only covers attacks by domestic dogs, while wild dogs are dealt with through the DEPI. Anyone with information should contact either the council or the DEPI.

Graffiti hunt BELGRAVE Police are searching for vandals who graffitied the Menzies Creek Community Hall and a children’s centre last week, and asking anyone with information to come forward.

Belgrave Police Sergeant, Paul Phillips, said that between 8pm on Thursday 14 May and 8am the following day, graffiti had been sprayed on the Menzies Creek Community Hall.

“Someone or some people have graffitied all of the exterior walls of the community hall, and also graffitied road signs and a children’s centre hall at the same location,” Sgt Phillips said.

School break-in POLICE are appealing for witnesses after Monbulk Secondary College was broken into last Thursday.

Burglar search POLICE are searching for burglars after two properties were broken into on the same day earlier this month. Between 6pm on 9 May and noon on 10 May, an unknown person entered a construction site on Bellbird Drive in Lilydale through temporary fencing, and entered an open garage.

Liquor, an esky and an angle grinder were stolen, worth about $200 altogether.

On the same day, between 3pm and 11pm, a property on Cave Hill Road in Lilydale was also robbed.

Lilydale Police Crime Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Mark Smithwick said that persons unknown entered the property through a window, taking an Apple computer, a Samsung TV and a Sony PlayStation 3, worth over $2000.

Joined by Jason Wood, Federal Member for La Trobe, we proudly wore our half Emerald, half Gembrook football jumpers to award the winning team, Emerald Football Club, a donation to the club and for their local Emerald RSL. Some talented photographers reap the rewards THE photography and exhibition competition held during the Emerald PAVE festival was again a well-supported success.

Presented by the Emerald U3A, the initiative drew a host of talented entrants from far and wide.

The competition was co-judged by local professional photographer Susan Gordon-Brown and local well-known artist John Dudley.

Winner of the Open Section was Margaret Thomson with her evocative image Silent Sentinal while the Youth Section was taken out by Ririn Destria Fitri from Emerald Secondary College with Birdy.

Most encouraging was the entry level for the Youth Section with 40 photographs entered.

The U3A People’s Choice award was won by Paul Gallant with Toadstools.

U3A would like to acknowledge the on-going support given to this annual exhibition by Emerald Arts Society.

Toastmasters reaches milestone DANDENONG Ranges Toastmasters is marking its 15th anniversary with a special meeting and is inviting past members and guests to celebrate.

Inaugural president and club member Stephen Forrest still enjoys speaking and mentoring others in the craft after 15 years.

Mr Forrest returned to study as a mature aged engineering student and has made more than 1100 jumps as a skydiving instructor.

He was a founding member of Dandenong Ranges Toastmasters club with Ian Johnston.

Present president, Paula Ewington, said participants had much to gain.

“Public speaking is one of the most confronting things anyone can do, but it’s a huge thrill to get up in front of people and talk,” she said.

The club has been an inspiration to many people from all walks of life, who have been drawn together by their desire to master public speaking.

Local musician John MacDonald is a past member, as is retired scientist and poet Jan Rebgetz.

The 15-year anniversary meeting is on 20 May at 7.30pm, which will include drinks and nibbles.

“You can just pop in or stay for the whole evening,” Paula said.

“You can even give a quick speech if you’re game.”

Dandenong Ranges Toastmasters meets at 7.30pm on the first and third Wednesday of most months at Kallista Mechanics Institute Hall next to the CFA in Kallista.

Big moves on campus

By JESSE GRAHAM LILYDALE’S former Swinburne campus could be the site of the Yarra Ranges’ new technical school, with the government moving to have the campus filled and running next year.

Last week, Monbulk MP and Deputy Premier James Merlino said the former campus could be the site of a new technical school promised for the area under the latest State Budget.

Technical schools are set to be established across the state under the budget, with $8 million in total set aside for planning.

Mr Merlino said there “may be the opportunity to locate the Tech School on this site,” and that the government was in talks with Swinburne and other educational providers to try and get the site sold and bring in another provider for TAFE and university classes.

Amie Kanshlo, a former Lilydale Swinburne student and campaigner as part of the Save Swinburne Lilydale group, said there was initial confusion over whether the technical school would mean TAFE and university classes could not be offered at the campus.

However, she said it had been made clear that all three could be accommodated at the site, and said there was relief and anticipation for the next steps.

“If it’s possible, I’ll definitely be relieved, but we’ll see how it goes,” she said.

Mr Merlino said that he expected the site would be “operating in some provision” in the first half of next year, though no plans had been announced for a provider coming on board.

Ms Kanshlo said that, until a provider was confirmed, the future of the site was “up in the air”.

The young Hawks first started playing in the Under 9s and have barely missed a weekend of football.

Interestingly, they also attend Monbulk College together and, needless to say, they have become best of friends.

Laura Gillard, a Collingwood fan, said she loved everything about Aussie rules.

“When I started playing, I just enjoyed it straight away,” she said.

“I like the fast pace and learning all the skills.”

Laura McLellan, a Richmond fan, said the girls had enjoyed playing in a mixed team.

On the field, Laura McLellan plays a key defensive role, while Laura Gillard is versatile on the wing.

Some of their highlights have included a grand final victory in 2012, while playing in the Under 11s.

The girls both wanted to thank their coaches over the years, including Peter Green.

Brian Rak from the Monbulk Junior Football Club congratulated both girls.

“It is of great significance to have two girls reach the milestone for our club,” he said.

“I’m not sure if it has happened in the league before.

“From the club’s perspective, we are extremely proud of their achievement.”

This will be their last season in the mixed competition and the girls are unsure if they will continue with the sport.

Donna sizzles for aid quake effort

By PETER DOUGLAS MONBULK’S Donna Grundy has been busy thinking of ways to help the Nepalese basically since news of the earthquake spread.

To help the country during its time of need, Ms Grundy has raised an incredible $2000 since the quake after conducting various fund-raisers, including sausage sizzles and a massive garage sale.

Ms Grundy developed an affinity for the country and its people after volunteering at a Nepal orphanage late last year.

She and her son volunteered at Menzies Haven for a 10-week period, where she said they were welcomed like family.

The recent funds raised will go towards the Menzies Haven’s appeal.

Ms Grundy said the orphanage was undergoing challenges that go well beyond just caring

for 30 children.

“The children at this orphanage are safe and scared, but (orphanage operators) are very busy trying to help their local community to recover from this disaster,” she said.

“They have cleared roads, removed rubble, cleared collapsed homes and fed 240 people.”

Ms Grundy said she felt compelled to continue to help the Nepalese.

“I am travelling back to Nepal to work with the children at the start of June for up to eight weeks,” she said.

“We have much to do.

“My son and I were welcomed into this beautiful large family when we volunteered there.”

Snow day in the hills WINTER came early in the Yarra Ranges and surrounds last week, when a blisteringly cold day brought forth a sprinkling of snow.

Cold weather on Tuesday and Wednesday left the upper regions around the valley, such as the forests around Toolangi, Marysville’s Lake Mountain and Mount Donna Buang, coated in snow.

Mount St Leonard was snow-capped on the day, while Mount Donna Buang had about 10 centimetres of snow by Thursday 14 May, according to www.warburtoninfo.com.

Unfortunately, the snow was not expected to last through the weekend on Mount Donna

Buang, but more cold spells heading into winter will see it return soon enough.

Snow and sleet was also reported in areas around the Dandenong Ranges.

Drivers are warned to be careful when driving in snowy and icy conditions, as areas can experience black ice and may not be suitable for non-4WDs at times.

I AM writing on behalf of the members of the Mount Evelyn RSL in response to Noel Buchanan’s offensive statement regarding the Mail ‘profiteering’ by putting out a 14-page Anzac Day special edition.

As far as we are concerned we hope they did make some sort of profit, because they deserved to.

Their 14-page Anzac edition was an extraordinary historical document - which none of us paid a cent to read.

On top of that we would also like to point out that the support this paper

gives to local RSL clubs and to commemorative events to do with our military heritage is, in a word, phenomenal.

The editors, reporters, and photographers have always done their best to assist the RSL with a community cause or promote an interesting story.

Their work is always of high quality and has always benefited the club and its members greatly.

In fact the Mount Evelyn RSL would go as far as to say we wouldn’t be as great a club as we are today if it wasn’t for the support we have gotten from both of our local newspapers and the staff that works for them.

And they have never asked for one cent for doing it.

If they made some sort of profit from that special edition then that is great as far as we are concerned, it will help them to continue to produce a professional and informative newspaper that we all get to benefit and learn from.

Keep up the great work, The Mail.

By PETER DOUGLAS TWO Victorian Government MPs led top-level talks with Yarra Ranges Shire last week to discuss the spend of a $50 million funding package.

Minister for Local Government Natalie Hutchins and Parliamentary Secretary for Treasury and Finance Daniel Mulino met with Mayor Maria McCarthy and chief executive officer Glenn Patterson.

The quartet gathered at the Monbulk Living and Learning Centre to discuss the new Interface Councils Infrastructure Fund, which is designed to support councils and communities on the edge of Melbourne.

Ms Hutchins told the Mail that the initiative is designed to lessen the gap between metropolitan Melbourne and the outer east.

“This will ensure councils with

unique challenges don’t miss out on establishing much-needed infrastructure,” she said.

“The Monbulk Living and Learning Centre is a perfect example of what this government is hoping to achieve.

“There are no specifics set down yet but clearly infrastructure such as this should be priority.”

The Interface Fund, which is the first of its kind, will provide support for the 10 interface council areas, which includes Yarra Ranges, Cardinia, Casey and Mornington Peninsula councils.

These areas all have elements of metropolitan, regional and rural communities.

Mr Mulino expressed his excitement over the fund.

“We’re extremely happy to get this in the budget,” he said.

“The Interface Fund will invest in project that will make significant difference in the day-to-day lives of local residents.

“Hopefully we can get the money flowing by the end of the year.”

During discussions, Mr Patterson said he was pleased the Government had followed through with promises from the previous government.

He acknowledged it was important to find funding streams to facilitate shire growth.

“This initial investment will enable urgently needed local government community infrastructure projects including community hubs, cultural or recreation facilities, to be rebuilt, expanded or upgraded,” he said.

Applications will be called for in the coming months.

STUDENT safety is no longer a rocky road at Selby Primary School, thanks to a commitment to install electronic variable speed-limit signs.

In addition to a flashing sign that alerts drivers as they near the school crossing, speed limits will be reduced from 60kmh to 40kmh, to ensure less risk to primary school children.

The signs and speed-limit reduction is expected to be in place for the 2016 school year.

In announcing the funding commitment, Monbulk MP James Merlino said the road was a notorious safety concern.

“Drivers come down the hill, round the bend and can find it difficult to see the school crossing,” Mr Merlino said.

“One nearby resident has had a car in her front yard numerous times because drivers underestimate the corner.

“Our school kids deserve to be safe, and our upgrade and speed changes will ensure they are.”

School principal Justin Butler said it was a welcome relief for students and staff.

“Many drivers are oblivious to the school zone,” he said.

“We’ve had police radar here, which would suggest this is definitely the case.

“The school has campaigned heavily for the signs, so it’s a great result.”

The $593,000 funding package also includes a commitment to install the electronic variable speed limit signs at Mount Dandenong and The Patch primary schools.

Also, as part of the safety improvements commitment, $768,000 has been provided to undertake resurfacing works on a 2.4km section of Monbulk Road between Kallista and Belgrave.

Lower rate rise planned

By JESSE GRAHAM RATEPAYERS appear to be the outright winners of the Yarra Ranges Council’s new draft budget, with lower than expected rate rises for the coming year.

On Tuesday 12 May, the council unanimously endorsed the 2015-’16 draft budget, which maps out the council’s planned spending for the coming year.

The budget outlines $39.22 million in new capital works, which will be added to $20.08 million in works carried over from the current financial year.

The Capital Works Program features winners in the Yarra Valley and in the hills, with Healesville’s Don Road Sporting Pavilion allocated $800,000 for works, along with $2 million towards the Monbulk Regional Soccer Centre’s construction.

But the big winner from the budget appears to be ratepayers, who will only have a 3.3 per cent

rate rise, instead of an anticipated 4.8 per cent.

Yarra Ranges Council CEO Glenn Patterson said the 1.5 per cent cut on the rate rise was a one-off reduction in the aftermath of the carbon tax repeal, which is equivalent to returning about $2 million to the public.

“We had to find close to $2 million of operational expenditure savings to return the 1.5 per cent carbon price back to the community - we’ve done that,” he said.

Mr Patterson and Corporate Services director Troy Edwards said the savings were found by “doing more with less”, including not renewing jobs in some departments when vacancies came up.

In the lead-up to the State Government’s rate-capping for councils, Yarra Ranges has forecast the coming years’ rate increases at 3.9 per cent ongoing, also down from 4.8 per cent.

This, according to Mr Patterson and Mr Edwards, may change de-

pending on the government’s approach to the capping, which has yet to be revealed.

“We’re anticipating we probably have to make a move lower, but we just don’t know,” Mr Edwards said.

“We have to start to think about how to grow that culture, how to do more with less.”

The proposal to cap council rates at the Consumer Price Index was promised by Labor before the election, and the cap is expected to be brought in for the 2016-’17 financial year.

CPI is currently about 2.5 per cent - significantly lower than the current rate increases.

As for this year’s 3.3 per cent increase, the budget lists maintaining service levels and meeting costs, including a reduction in the Victorian Grants Commission allocation and capital works making up 1.8 per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively.

In the 2015-’16 year,

$122,853,000 is expected to be raised from council rates, up $4,911,000 from last year’s rate collection. The whole budget manages $171 million across the shire.

Of the $39.22 million for capital works, $10.29 million will be spent on roadworks, $3.61 million on footpaths and $2.69 million on parks and open spaces.

Members of the public can make submissions until 5pm on Thursday 11 June.

A public meeting on the draft budget will be held at 7pm on Tuesday 16 June, at the Civic Centre on Anderson Street in Lilydale, where all submissions will be considered.

Big ticket items top the list

By JESSE GRAHAM FOR the Dandenong Ranges, this year’s council budget is all about big ticket infrastructure, footpaths and roads, with millions of dollars in capital works money coming into the area.

Mayor Maria McCarthy said the 2015-’16 Yarra Ranges Council budget was “pro-active and realistic”, balancing the need to save funds with $39.2 million in new capital works projects.

The project features two new sporting pavilions, with $800,000 for Healesville’s Don Road Sporting Pavilion’s construction and $100,000 for the design of the Upwey-Tecoma Community Recreational and Sporting Hub (UTCRASH).

Residents in the hills will have a number of new footpath works underway in the coming year, and Ferny Creek Primary School will be one of the benefactors, with $160,000 to be spent on footpath works in School Road.

Belgrave, Monbulk, Upwey, Ferny Creek and Kallista will all receive footpath works, while $430,000 will be spent reconstructing a retaining wall and car park at the Hayes car park in Belgrave.

A $78,000 trail from Belgrave to Birdland and Lysterfield will be funded under the budget, and Moores Road in Monbulk will have a truck turnaround area constructed for garbage trucks, at a cost of $100,000.

The big ticket items for the hills are $2 million from the council for the construction of the Monbulk Regional Soccer Centre, which also has funding guarantees from the State and Federal Governments.

Meanwhile, Montrose Town Centre will receive $500,000 for improved facilities, including its library and maternal and child health services.

The Save the Olinda Pool Group will also be grinning, with $570,000 allocated for the restoration of the pool from the council, which will supplement funding from the Victorian Government.

The pool is expected to be open sometime before the end of the year.

HELP for small businesses and a backdown from last year’s more intense measures are two notable standouts from last week’s Federal Budget, with pleasure and pain in its pages for Yarra Ranges residents.

On Tuesday, 12 May, the Federal Government released its budget for the coming financial year, outlining new savings, along with policies for businesses and families across the country.

Small businesses are expected to be one of the best-off groups under the Federal Budget, with the government bringing in a new immediate tax deduction for any assets purchased for less than $20,000.

Any of these assets - a lawnmower, industrial oven, coffee machine or printer were examples given by the government - can have their entire cost deducted from tax, as long as the business has an annual turnover of under $2 million.

Tax on small business is also to drop by 1.5 per cent, and unincorporated small businesses will receive a five per cent tax discount - up to $1000 - each year.

According to treasurer, Joe Hockey, the budget also features provisions for farmers, who will be able to make immediate tax deductions on new fencing, as well as adding $250 million into the Drought Concessional Loan Scheme.

The government backed down on its controversial proposal to bring in a six-month waiting period for Newstart payments for those aged under 25 from last year’s budget, replacing it with a

On Friday 15 May, La Trobe MP Jason Wood announced over $15 million in funding secured for the electorate under the National Stronger Relations Fund.

Of that funding, $3.835 million was confirmed for a Multi-Purpose Health Hub in Belgrave, as well as $1.5 million for a community hub in Emerald.

Mr Wood said the Belgrave hub would be a “onestop health hub” for communities surrounding the town, with Yarra Ranges Council groups and other external groups based under one roof.

Yarra Ranges Youth Services, Maternal and Child Health, Aged and Disability Services, Inspiro and the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Services will all be located in the hub, which will sit at the current Youth Services site next to the Cameo Theatre.

The funding accompanies $1 million in State Government funding in last year’s budget, and the Yarra Ranges Council has said it would fund the remaining costs for the $8.3 million building.

Under the government’s recently-announced ‘no jab, no pay’ policy, parents whose children do not have up-to-date vaccinations will lose access to Family Tax Benefit Part A’s end-of-year supplement and subsidised childcare.

The budget papers estimate this will affect the families of 39,000 children under the age of

seven across the country who do not have up-to-date vaccinations.

The policy’s only exemption is for medical reasons - religious or personal objection will no longer allow parents to continue to receive payments - and will begin in January 2016.

“I hope to work with already existing local GPs to make sure that this project (the Belgrave hub) is successful.”

The area will have Roads to Recovery funding doubled, with $3.3 million going to the Yarra Ranges Shire region, $2.3 million in the Cardinia Shire area and $1 million for the City of Knox.

Meanwhile, Emerald Primary School’s Basketball Centre will receive $500,000 under the budget, through the Community Development Grants Programme.

Mr Wood said the announcements and investments would “strengthen communities in La Trobe” by bolstering economic growth, productivity and employment.

‘Unsung Heroes’ is described as a powerful journey through Australia’s history, exploring and celebrating the life and times of those who have shaped this nation.

Bruce Watson, Moira Tyers and Wendy Ealey have put together a special concert that commemorates our story.

Their show presents the stories of ordinary people swept up in big events.

From Jim Martin, the youngest soldier to serve in the First World War, who died at 14 years of age, to the inspiring Amal Basry, a refugee fleeing war and terror in Iraq, the show aims to present stories told through individual lives in a way the audience can relate to.

The original songs, evocative images and audience interaction, will take you on a powerful and emotional journey.

There will be Anzac biscuits and Turkish delights to nibble on during the interval.

Death by doubleclick on the screen Unfriended Starring Shelley Hennig, Renee Olstead, Will Peltz Rated MA15+ for strong themes, violence and coarse language UNFRIENDED is a surprisingly decent horror movie, despite its poor characters.

On the first anniversary of her death, a ghost haunts the Skype conversation of five friends whose online harassment drove her to suicide.

Unfriended is a commendable effort to tell a modern horror story about social media and cyberbullying.

The film has effective slow-burning suspense punctuated by horrific violence, and even some good subtle foreshadowing involving household objects.

It was a potentially foolish decision to have the film take place entirely on a computer desktop, but Unfriended makes the most of its confined “set-

ting”, with distortions and tell-tale glitches suggesting ghostly influence and keeping you on edge.

This feels like a filmed “creepypasta”, which is the term for horror stories and urban legends circulated on (and often about) the internet.

Unfortunately, Unfriended’s terrible characters are a major stumbling point.

Yes, they’re hormonal, judgemental teens; they’re supposed to be terrible.

But they’re one-dimensionally mean and uninteresting, so you don’t really care when they start dying.

The film steadily culls the cast down to the likeable few, but the ghost has long since made up its mind and the final deaths become inevitable, thus sapping the tension.

Unfriended is well worth checking out, but it’s much better if taken as a revenge movie for the ghost than as a survival movie for the mortals.

Blue skies for Aitken’s great game

By DENNIS FULLER THE skies cleared for the occasion at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday, with a crisp morning warmed by the expectant golfers all hoping for the best in the round of bisque par.

Dave Aitken (27) found the format and the going to his liking as he waltzed into the tuck shop with a +8 score to head the field in B Grade and overall.

Ken Hill (15), in A Grade, stole the show with a great round of +6.

There were numerous great rounds that did not result in wins, headed by Peter Clowes’ +6, Dean Shannon’s +5; with Steve Town, Phillip Crossley and Ken Sumsion all carding +4.

John Fisher was nearest the pins on the 4th and the pro pin 18th, Shannon did the trick on the 7th, Clowes the 12th and Broc Reynolds was nearest on the 13th.

Seven Juniors mark their milestones

After a Titanic struggle, it was Daisy Mackey who triumphed in the ladies bisque par from Brianna McCoy. On Wednesday’s Obstinately Filtered Golf (OFG), members played a sedate round of stableford.

The scoring was exceptionally sedate with Brian McCoy (34) heading the field with net 71.

Peter Clowes scored 72, while Ken Hill and Gerran Wright managed 73.

The handicap pennant team played at home against eastern Sward and just claimed a win.

This win qualifies them for the final against the same opposition next week.

The highlight of the day was Ross Martin, being 4 down on the 13th tee, managed to win that hole by having a hole in one ... but he still lost the match.

ROUND 6 was a game of achievements at Monbulk, with seven players reaching key milestones.

Fifty games up for Sage Farmer (Under 13s), Eligh Coy (Under 13s), Kai Linde(Under 14s), Sam Edyvane (Under 16s); and 100 games up for Daniel Rak (Under 16s), and Laura Gillard and Laura McClelland (Under 14s). A tremendous effort.

With the sun beaming on the Monbulk ground 6, Monbulk sides were up against some strong opposition in Wandin and Emerald (Under 11s).The Under 10s were up against Wandin and put in a commanding performance.

Moving the ball quickly over the ground had the opposition constantly on the back foot. The players continue to improve individually and as a team and really enjoyed the drier conditions.

The Under 11 side faced Emerald, which they had defeated earlier in the season. After a slow start, Monbulk gained momentum to record a two-goal win.

Under 12s faced up to Wandin in good form and had a ding-dong battle in a close contest all day, but proved the better side to record a seven-point win.

Under 13s played Wandin and came away with their biggest win

of the season. Impressive out of the centre and keeping an open forward line, which saw 32 scoring shots to zero and a big 122-point win.

Under 14s faced the top-of-theladder side, Wandin, and with four milestone players, the Monbulk side were keen to show they are one of the top sides. A humdinger of a game which saw the score change many times. Wandin proved a little too strong and stood up in the pressure-cooked final quarter to take the points by two goals. The two 100 game Lauras had plenty of extra support and both had good games.

The Under 16s finished the day against a Wandin side that had been their nemesis for a few seasons.

However, with a determined attitude and strong attack on the ball, the team was triumphant by 44 points.

All the good work and structures that team coach Chris Hughson had been working on during training was on show for the home crowd.

Pride match a hard-fought win

Rainbows were on the ground and on jumpers.

The second Pride Game, which was against Warburton Millgrove this year, was an outstanding success with Yarra Glen claiming the four points.

Lachlan Telford from Yarra Glen and Bianca Daniels from Warburton Millgrove were awarded the Pride Cup medals.

DIVISION 1 SENIORS Yarra Glen 13.14 (92) d Warburton Millgrove 11.14 (80) YARRA Glen has come away with a great win after trailing by 19 points at half-time.

Warburton looked to have the better running game early and it showed on the scoreboard, reading 8.6 (54) to 5.5 (35) at the long break.

In the third term, Yarra Glen’s defensive game came to the fore. Warburton did attack but only managed 1.6, while Yarra Glen on the rebound booted 4.4 and the margin was reduced to just three points in Warburton’s favour at the last change.

Yarra Glen’s last quarter was a great performance, even though it didn’t blow the opposition away, it looked hungrier and gave itself more scoring chances.

It booted 4.5 to 2.2 to win by 12 points in a real gutsy display.

The first half was a goal-for-goal affair with Monbulk just holding sway at half-time by nine points.

The third term remained a tight battle. Monbulk did look to be getting on top but it only increased the margin to 16 points by the last change.

The last term was a cracker. Belgrave started to look a bit slicker over the ground and it gave itself plenty of chances as it booted 3.4, but Monbulk’s 2.3 was enough for it to hold on to win by four points in an absolute thriller.

Wandin 17.16 (118) d Olinda Ferny Creek 3.15 (33) WANDIN look to be unbeatable at this stage, this time with a big 85-point win over Olinda.

Wandin wasn’t actually at its best in the first half as it was wasteful, booting 6.12, but it held Olinda to just 1.8 to have a handy 34-point lead at the half.

The second half was where the real Wandin showed up. It straightened up and went a lot more direct hitting the scoreboard regularly.

It added another 11 goals to its total while Olinda could only manage two goals to see Wandin run away with a big victory.

Mount Evelyn booted eight goals to four in the first half and arguably could have been further up if it was a little more precise with its ball movement. Upwey turned this game around in the third as it took the game on. It booted an inaccurate 6.7 to 3.1 and all of a sudden Mount Evelyn’s lead was reduced to just one point at the final change.

The last quarter was a dire battle with both sides giving their all.

But it was Upwey that took the lead after scoring 5.3 to 4.3 and were able to hold on to win by five points and break Mount Evelyn’s hearts.

Goals were hard to come by early with both sides’ defences playing well but it was Woori that just had the edge at quarter time leading by four points.

Woori’s hardness in the second looked to rattle Healesville a little.

It made the most of it as they slotted four goals to one to lead by 23 points at the main break.

The second half was a very even contest but despite everything Healesville threw at Woori it just wasn't able to reduce the margin significantly enough to be any real threat as Woori came away with a pretty good 23-point win.

DIVISION 2 SENIORS Gembrook Cockatoo 13.14 (92) d Alexandra 7.13 (55) GEMBROOK is starting to find its feet after a poor start to the season and have come away with a good 37-point win over Alexandra after a tight first half.

Gembrook certainly had the better of the play early but just couldn’t put a big gap between them and their opponents as there was just 11 points at half-time.

Gembrook’s third term was where they made the most of their play down forward booting 4.2 and even though Alex wasn't playing bad it only managed 1.4 which saw it looking at a 27 point deficit at the last break.

Gembrook finished the day off pretty well.

It only booted three last-quarter goals but held Alexandra to just one major to win well and keep their season well and truly alive.

Thornton’s pressure throughout the day was sensational as it slowly wore Emerald down.

Emerald did lead by nine points at quarter time but Thornton’s relentless pressure in the second term paid dividends as it booted four goals to one.

They went into half-time with a three-goal advantage.

The third term was a great contest with Emerald reducing the margin to just 12 points by the last change, giving it a real sniff going into the last quarter.

Thornton’s last quarter was its best as it was the team finishing full of run.

It slammed on six last-quarter goals to three to come away with a 30-point win and cause one of the upsets of the round.

Yarra Junction was impressive from the outset, its running ability was first class and it got out to a 32-point lead by half-time.

Seville was expected to hit back but it just didn’t happen as Junction went up another gear in the third, booting six goals to three and all of a sudden the margin was out to 56 points.

Junction continued its impressive play in the last to finish in great style, booting five goals to two to win in dominant fashion.

Monbulk stepped its game up another level in the last as Belgrave looked a little flat footed.

Monbulk movement of the ball was superb as it shot 18 goals to eight to finish off in great fashion and come away with a good eight-goal victory.

Olinda continued to keep Wandin at arm’s length in the last quarter, scoring 12 goals to 10 to finish with a controlled victory.

Healesville 49 d Woori Yallock 25 HEALESVILLE was pretty good over the four quarters to produce a 24-goal victory.

It started with a 10-goal to six first term and then really got going in the second, scoring 13 goals to 5 to get out to a 12-goal lead by halftime.

The second half was a similar story to the first, as Healesville continued to stretch the lead.

It scored 12 goals to eight in the third and then finished off well with a 14 goal to six last quarter to come away with a handy win.

Woori Yallock best players: Jordan Kennedy (13 goals), Heidi Summers, Kimberley Williams Warburton Millgrove 42 d Yarra Glen 41 THIS was easily the game of the round with plenty of lead changes and the winner still in doubt deep into the last quarter.

Yarra Glen got out to an early lead as it went to quarter time, scoring 15 goals to 11.

But Warby slowly clawed its way back in the second, scoring 13 goals to 11 to see Yarra Glen lead by just two goals at the half.

Warby’s third term was terrific. Yarra Glen just couldn’t break its defence as Warby put on 12 goals to six.

Warby had taken the lead by four goals at the last change.

The last quarter was a nail biter. Yarra Glen was giving it all and it were finishing strong but unfortunately time beat it.

Warby was able to hold on to win by one goal in an absolute thriller.
