Education Week 17-23 May, 2015 SPECIAL FEATURE
Week adds up to enjoy maths THIS year’s Education Week maths theme will see hundreds of schools and early years services participate in the week, from 17-23 May 2015, through open days, exhibitions, themed class activities and other special events. Under the theme of ‘Crack the Code With Maths’ schools and early childhood programs are encouraged to explore maths with students and parents using the activity
ideas, promotional tools, teaching resources and helpful course and career links found on the Department of Education’s website. Schools will be able to take part in The Great Victorian Coding Challenge in the leadup to Education Week this year by bringing maths to life in their classrooms. Using the simple software Scratch which is already installed on government school
computers, students can create and animate their very own characters and games, and have the chance to win a full-day excursion to specialist maths and science centre Quantum Victoria. And there’s plenty of support for teachers with no knowledge of coding, including short webinars, online resources and ideas for classroom activities.
Other activities will give thousands of children the opportunity to experience freeof-charge educational and cultural activities hosted by museums, galleries, libraries, farms, performance groups and other community organisations with education programs throughout Victoria. Visit www.education.vic.gov.au and follow the Education Week link at the bottom of the page.
