THE Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully will receive a new intensive care and short stay unit, thanks to Victorian Government funding.

Last week’s State Budget included a detailed $20 million provision for the upgrade of the facility.

In a statement from the Department of Health, it was outlined the new ICU will enable The Angliss to provide the latest technology to treat heart attacks, strokes, severe infections, organ failure and complications resulting from surgery.

Chief of Clinical and Site Operations, Ben Kelly, is appreciative of the financial assistance.

“Eastern Health welcomes the Victorian Government’s ongoing commitment to Angliss Hospital,” he said.

The hospital will receive $200,000 this financial year, with the remaining spend and completion of the project expected in the fourth quarter of 2018’19.

Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Operations, Jenny Dempster, said the money would greatly assist the hospital’s capacity to care for patients.

“This new centre will mean fewer patients will need to be moved to Box Hill for intensive care,” she said.

“We want to make sure the Angliss Hospital fits with the general direction of Eastern Health.

“We look forward to working with the Victorian Government to confirm the details of this exciting project.“ Member for Eastern Metropolitan Region, Shaun Leane, said the investment at Angliss Hospital would be welcomed among the community.

“Our $20 million investment to upgrade The Angliss Hospital will mean local families can access the care they need, closer to home,“ he said.

Briefly Wet weather crash POLICE are urging drivers to pay attention to the roads in the wet weather, after a serious crash at the site of a recent fatality on Friday night.

On Friday 8 May, an 18-year-old woman, who police believe is from the Woori Yallock area, crashed on a corner of Healesville-Kooweerup Road, which is notorious for crashes.

Emerald Police Sergeant, David Calkin, said the crash occurred two trees - roughly four metres - away from a crash that claimed the life of an 18-year-old Cockatoo woman on 19 April.

“It was exactly the same bend, exactly the same circumstances,” he said.

“We were very lucky not to have had another fatality in that area.”

Sgt Calkin said the cause of the crash was yet to be determined.

He asked that all drivers pay attention to the road when driving, and stay aware of conditions, such as wet roads and leaves and branches falling from trees.

The woman’s car was written off as a result of the crash.

Alleged burglar court out A FERNTREE Gully man will face court later this year after being charged in relation to a Belgrave burglary last month.

The 38-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday 6 May and charged with burglary and handling stolen goods in relation to the theft, which occurred at a Terrys Avenue, Belgrave, property over the Easter long weekend.

He will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 10 September.

Burglary arrest A MOUNT Evelyn man has been arrested in regards to a residential burglary in Wandin, and is expected to face court.

The 37-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday 5 May in relation to the burglary, and has been released on summons - he will face court to answer charges of burglary and theft.

Cafe break-in EMERALD Police officers are searching for information after a cafe was broken into in Cockatoo earlier this month.

Sergeant David Calkin, said that the break-in occurred last week - around 6 May - at a cafe and store on McBride Street in Cockatoo.

Kinder funds flow

By KATH GANNAWAY PRE-SCHOOL educators, parents and kinder kids will benefit from continued pre-school funding announced last week.

After almost a year of intense lobbying, the Federal Government came through with a commitment to continue its funding of five hours of pre-school costs through to 2017.

The recommended 15 hours of pre-school for four-year-olds is currently funded by the State Government for 10 hours and the Federal Government for five under the National Partnership Agreement on Universal Access to Early Childhood Education.

The Commonwealth funding, however, expires in December and, until this week, there was no guarantee it would be continued.

The uncertainty placed pressure on groups like Yarra Ranges Kinders who manage 10 Yarra Ranges Council pre-schools across the shire, including Belgrave.

Yarra Ranges Kinders’ executive officer, Heidi Perry, said it was welcome news that would provide some certainty for staff, and relief for family budgets.

She said staff continuity was important across all their sites which ran from Belgrave across to Warburton and Coldstream, and while full-time and part-time staff were considered as permanent positions, they were always subject to ongoing viability, and funding was a big factor.

For parents, there was a potential 100 per cent fee increase without the funding, putting pre-school beyond the reach of many families.

“If the funding wasn’t there, we

“Obviously, we would love to have a permanent commitment, but two years is a start and will make it much easier for forward planning.

“This does give us more certainty.”

The 10 pre-schools are part of the network of 66 pre-schools and childcare centres that offer 15 hours of kindergarten to nearly 2000 children across the municipality.

Yarra Ranges Council’s director of Social and Economic Development, Ali Wastie, said the council had thrown its support behind the Municipal Association of Victoria campaign urging the Federal Government to renew its funding commitment.

“The announcement is a win for Yarra Ranges families who would have faced a significant fee increase if the Federal Government had not renewed its funding agreement,” she said.

The MAV’s campaign was

ramped up in February with the release of the Productivity Commission’s report into Childcare and Early Childhood Learning which supported continued Commonwealth investment in preschool programs.

MAV president Cr Bill McArthur said the funding was not only welcome, but imperative to the learning outcomes of future generations.

“The two years of funding is a great start, and we will continue to work with all levels of government to ensure longevity,” he said.

POLICE are appealing for witnesses, after a winery construction site on Maroondah Highway was broken into, with thousands of dollars of tools stolen.

Lilydale Police Criminal Investigation Unit (CIU) Detective Sergeant, Mark Smithwick, said the break-in occurred at a construction site on the corner of Hill Road and Maroondah Highway in Coldstream between 4pm on the Wednesday 6 May and 6am the following day.

The main building under construction, which was secured with plywood, was broken into, and $2500 worth of power tools were stolen.

Anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity at the site is urged to contact Lilydale Police on 9739 2300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sure, glucosamine is still around, but it’s not that trendy anymore.

The reason is the initial research into glucosamine was strong, particularly when combined with sulfate or chondroitin, in regard to alleviation of arthritis symptoms or joint pain.

Bowel scan reminder out again ROTARY clubs from Belgrave, Emerald and Monbulk districts are urging people to have their bowels tested in May. For the entire month of May, bowel screening kits are on sale from participating pharmacies for $10, an initiative promoted by local Rotary clubs.

The tests are an early warning

detection system for bowel cancer, which is the most common internal cancer in Australians over the age of 40.

George Hammon, of Belgrave Rotary Club, said it could be viewed as precautionary.

“We don’t want people to think if they have a positive result they have bowel cancer,” he said.

“These tests are a screening process to pick up any early

warning signs that mean you need further advice from your doctor.“ Catching early warning signs can potentially save lives with a 90 per cent chance of being cured if the signs are recognised and treated early enough.

“The test is very simple and there are clear instructions for people to follow when testing at home,” he said.

A positive test will be notified

to both the tester and their GP within a week.

Both a positive or negative test will also be advised of and a reminder will be issued yearly when the screening program is operating.

There are no obvious signs or symptoms of bowel cancer, so regular testing can potentially save lives.

Cam’s seen world turn, and fire burn CAM Mackay has lived in some interesting parts of the world and, wherever he has lived, he has volunteered in some capacity, using his time to help people in need.

Like many young boys, Cam grew up loving fire trucks. He was an avid fan of the TV show ‘Emergency’ and even had an ‘Emergency’ lunch box in primary school!

A family move to America when he was 17 gave him his first real opportunity and experience to be a firefighter, when he joined his local Fire Department in Connecticut as a volunteer.

The knowledge, skills and experience during his time in America came straight back to him 20 years later when he joined the Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade back home.

In 1997, Cam moved to Russia where he lived for five years.

Working for The Salvation Army he saw a different side of Russia than most people.

Part of his role involved working on a soup line serving food to homeless people, in temperatures below -20 degrees

C, making for a chilly working environment.

He also visited prisoners in Russian jails which was an eye opener as their prisons were far harsher than those here in Australia.

Prior to moving to Russia, Cam joined his local SES Unit in Whitehorse, providing emergency response to rescue, storm and flood events as well as support to other emergency services such as the fire services, police and ambulance.

He continued his service with the SES when he returned from Russia and has been with them for almost 20 years.

It was a move to the Ferntree Gully area that enabled him to join his local CFA Brigade and again become a fire fighter.

He describes it as feeling like he’d come home.

“It feels great to be a firefighter,” he said.

“All the training I’d done so many years ago in the US came straight back to me, so it wasn’t hard to get back up to date.”

When asked how he manages to make his four-minute response time - getting to the fire station and on the truck, just four minutes after his pager

sounds - Cam explains “Where you live has everything to do with it.

“If you’re a CFA firefighter, you want to be on that truck when your pager goes.

“For many CFA members, it will be an influencing factor on the house they choose to buy or rent.”

He laughs as he describes his strategy.

“My clothes are laid out ready to jump straight into,” he said.

“I have slip on shoes by the door and the car is reversed into the driveway ready to go.

“Ask any CFA volunteer firefighter and you’re likely to get a similar response,” he said.

Cam gets an enormous sense of satisfaction from helping people - seeing that sense of relief in people’s eyes when they see the fire truck arrive, a look that says “thank goodness they’re here“.

“I love having my day job that I am passionate about, but I also love being able to do something that not many other people get to do,” he said.

“I’m lucky because I feel I get the best of both worlds.”

His helping hand

BY HELEN COLLIER WHEN you look back across a varied and distinguished career such as Vaughan Hinton’s, the common thread that runs throughout it is his work with people in need.

It’s no surprise therefore that at 81 years of age, he is an active member of his local fire brigade - Monbulk CFA. Vaughan’s career started back in the days when the ABC broadcast in black and white.

In his twenties, he moved to Sydney to work with a humanitarian aid agency resettling refugees and his work took him to crisis situations all over Europe and Asia where he reported on and worked with people in desperate need.

In his forties he became a television producer with the ABC, creating the non-religious, religious affairs series ‘Compass’ with presenter Geraldine Doogue.

When Vaughan retired at 70 years of age, he moved to Melbourne to be near his family, but he wasn’t ready to put his feet up and live a quiet life.

A friend suggested he join his local CFA but his immediate reaction was ‘I don’t want to become a firefighter, so what could I possibly do for the CFA?’ He knew he wanted to volunteer in some capacity so he went to Monbulk CFA and asked if there was anything he could do. They welcomed him warmly and while he was very happy to be asked to make the tea, his competence was soon ‘spotted’ and he was asked to assist the secretary.

He did this and inevitably this led to him taking on the role.

He held the secretary position for the next six years.

Now he is happy to fire up the barbecue or make the tea, whatever is required of him, as part of the Monbulk Auxiliary Brigade.

“I suspect few people in the community appreciate the amount of time and effort that our volunteer firefighters put in to keep up their skills,” he said.

emergency crews in crisis situations the world over and I know for a fact that our volunteer brigade members are among the best.

“Working with them, helping administer the Monbulk Brigade has been a remarkably rewarding experience, brightening this latter part of my life.”

Last year, Vaughan was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his services to the media and community.

It’s time to crunch the numbers WITH sleeves rolled up, Treasurer Joe Hockey posed for cameras last week as he pretended to pore over pages of the national budget.

Surrounded by media, Mr Hockey and Prime Minister Tony Abbott officially began their crusade of selling the 2015 budget.

Let’s be honest, it’s difficult for the average citizen not to cough up some Weeties while viewing such wellorchestrated coverage on breakfast television.

But let’s also remember, budget time is the one chance during the year when the performance of our representatives can be quantified.

During this time, we can remove the theatrics of daily political life, the lip-service and rhetoric, and apply more technical analysis.

This is true at all levels of government.

So, take time to see how this budget affects you, the community in which you live, and perhaps even the community organisation to which you are closest.

Question how well your representatives have shown ‘actual’ support over the past year.

Be mindful, too, to consider how well you have worked with your representatives.

Many people would be amazed at how many fantastic grants are available to support community projects.

Though, this funding is not delivered on a silver platter, with many recipients working exceptionally hard.

The recent developments at the Montrose Soccer Club are an exceptional example of an organisation working well with local, state and federal governments.

The result over the past five years is an increase of two club teams to about 10, which includes veteran and junior participation.

Not to mention the incredible new facilities.

This shows the fruits of showing initiative, lobbying hard, as well as conducting numerous fund-raising initiatives.

So, while it’s easy to scoff at the theatrics around the selling of a budget, take time to question this year’s budget, and how you can improve your community through working with our politicians.

Letters Consider the motives WITHIN these pages, over about a month, there has been statement and counter-claim about the closure of the CFA’s prime training facility, Fiskville.

But there are back stories.

‘Fiskville closed for good, says Mick’, read the headline in the ‘Mail’ on April 7, which went on to describe Mick Tisbury as a ‘Yarra Ranges firefighter’.

As he works for MFB and Yarra Ranges in a CFA area, he is a 'metropolitan firefighter who lives in the Yarra Ranges’.

Mick is also an active senior official with the United Firefighters Union.

In my opinion, his quotes and use of language smack of being part of a state-wide UFU campaign launched through 'local firefighters’, with the intent of giving the CFA a black eye at the negotiating table where wages and conditions are equally ascritical as safety concerns.

Enter Ian Ireland, (‘Mail’ letters, 5 May) writing as a lieutenant in the Ballan Fire Brigade (CFA), who makes a complaint that closing Fiskville was wrong.

Part of his claim is that 60 families will be lost, and money lost, to the Ballan community.

And Ian would know, as he is a senior member of a lobby organisation called 'Proud to Support Fiskville Committee’.

Ian and his wife also run the local Ballan newsagency, so the loss of 60 families and the servicing of the at least 3000 attendees at training courses may possibly affect the business’s income.

I have no doubt these two gentlemen have the best interests of those they represent. Have I got an agenda myself?

I’m a CFA volunteer, but in this case I am calling on my years of experience as a union PR bod and also a newspaper editor, experience which screams at me that all written recently about Fiskville in these pages just may, I repeat ‘just may’, not be what it seems.

It’s not the place itself, Fiskville, that is damaged beyond repair, it is the name.

Crossings the priority IN RESPONSE to Casey MP Tony Smith’s letter to the editor (‘Mail’, 28 May): Sorry, Tony, but the

people condemned were the people of metropolitan Melbourne, when Denis Napthine signed a contract to build the East-West Link, knowing that eight to nine out of 10 people wanted crossings fixed first.

I went to one of many meetings run by the Liberal Party to gauge people’s feelings on the East-West Link versus railway crossing upgrades.

Eighteen people were invited to each meeting.

Sixteen of the 18 voted for crossing upgrades first, mainly because of, firstly, the potential lives saved and the accidents and trauma on crossings.

Secondly, because of the congestion in Melbourne, travel time; and the healthier state of the people’s minds when commuting to work.

Thirdly, because 90 per cent of the traffic on the East-West Link gets off at Punt Road and the city-connecting streets, before the extension would even be built.

So sorry, mate, the East-West Link was never a priority infrastructure investment and was definitely not the major project of the people.

In fact, it was signed up to by the Napthine Government fully knowing that many people wanted crossings first.

Race not so great THE 34th Great Train Race turned into disappointment. Long queues at the intersection of Monbulk-Emerald and Cockatoo-Emerald roads in Emerald had formed.

Traffic attendants were speaking to one car at a time. We had no other option, except for walking and missing the train’s arrival at Emerald Station.

To our surprise, the main Emerald road was deserted as well as most of the village.

Was this really the big fun day in Emerald?

Whoever thought this arrangement was a good idea should think again.

Perhaps Emerald’s traffic management found it rational and would extend it to market days and normal weekends. In that case, the Emerald village traders and residents need not be disturbed in the future.

Give me a sign THE stretch of Mount Dandenong Tourist Road between Sherbrooke and Clarkmont roads should be absolutely signposted as ‘Anzac Avenue’.

As a child living there in the 1970s, I could never work out why it wasn’t?

It was our official postal address?

Until about 1980, when, for some reason, we became just another part of the tourist road?

When my parents bought their property in 1971, in which they still reside, the chestnut trees were still proud and glorious.

Along with the stone memorial on the edge of Sherbrooke Forest, the Avenue, and its significance, was well respected.

But, every autumn, the carloads did come.

They did bash the hell out of the trees, parked wherever they wanted, often dangerously.

I remember Dad, on more than one occasion, chasing people off our property, because we had a lovely, productive ‘specimen’ in our front yard.

As time went on the ‘electricity people’ did indeed ‘chop the life out’ of these trees, which caused the demise of so many.

It would be wonderful, especially after the restoration of the monument in this centenary year, if Anzac Avenue was finally signposted as such.

This would give recognition and respect to those it was intended to honour, thanks to those who worked so hard to create it, and, hopefully, the sense of pride and awe that I had as a child, to the kids growing up there now.

Schools win out in budget

By JESSE GRAHAM AND VICTORIA STONE-MEADOWS SCHOOLS and community groups were the big winners in the Yarra Ranges and Dandenongs under last week’s State Budget, with millions being splashed to fix up old school buildings in the hills.

Yarra Junction Primary School, The Basin Primary School, Monbulk College and Emerald Secondary College were all benefactors from the budget, with millions of dollars going towards school modernisation and new construction.

Olinda community members campaigning for the return of their pool also received relief in the form of $500,000 in the budget to assist with Yarra Ranges Council’s works to get the pool running by summer.

Monbulk MP, Minister for Education and Deputy Premier, James Merlino, said there were a number of highlights for the community in the budget.

Mr Merlino said Labor’s pledge to re-open Lilydale’s former Swinburne University of Technology campus one of the party’s biggest pledges in the outer east - is underway, with $10 million in funding allocated through a $320 million TAFE rescue fund.

“Positive talks with Swinburne University, other tertiary providers and community stakeholders are continuing,” he said.

“We are working closely with Swinburne University to progress the sale and re-opening of the site - we expect that the site will be operating in some provision in the first half of 2016.”

Sporting clubs will also benefit from defibrillators and funding to upgrade facilities with women’s change rooms, with Monbulk one of the areas set to receive a $600,000 in funding.

Meanwhile, a $20 million upgrade

at the Angliss Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and Short Stay Unit will mean hills residents will be better serviced closer to home once the project is complete.

A trial of 24-hour public transport on weekends, through the Homesafe Initiative, will also help residents on the Lilydale and Belgrave lines, though details on what services will be available will be announced closer to the starting date, 1 January 2016.

Schools in the hills: schools in the Dandenong Ranges will be receiving multi-million dollar upgrades under the budget, including Emerald Secondary College ($1.5 million total; $312,000 in 2015-’16), Monbulk College ($3 million total; $541,000 in 2015-’16) and The Basin Primary School ($5.7 million; $1,028,000 in 2015-’16).

will be made available to sporting clubs across the state ($2.7 million), as well as $10 million funding for upgrading facilities to include female change rooms. Of this $10 million, $600,000 was pledged to Monbulk Recreation Reserve by MP James Merlino. Liberal candidate Mark Verschuur pledged $500,000 for the pavilion. Both the defibrillators and the facility upgrades will be provided through grants.

Monbulk drivers and parents: $1.3 million was allocated in the budget for road resurfacing and speed limit changes around local schools, according to MP James Merlino.

Family violence campaigners: a Royal Commission into Family Violence has been initiated by the government and will be funded by $57.9

million in this year’s budget ($81.3 million). The commission will report back to the community in early 2016.

Tradies: Yarra Ranges will receive a new technical school, which will be established along with several others around the state, worth $8 million in total. Also vehicle registration prices will be cut in half for trade apprentices under the budget.

Public transport users: 24-hour public transport on weekends will be trialled from 1 January 2016. It is unclear whether this will extend to bus services in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.

CFA members: crews will be trained to respond to cardiac-arrest and nonbreathing incidents at the same time as paramedics, to increase chances of survival for victims. Firefighters

suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) will have support services upgraded, with a two-year grant to the Austin Health Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital. Some 70 new CFA trucks will be purchased statewide.

Safe young drivers: the government will trial giving free licences to drivers who complete their four years of P-Plate driving without recording any traffic offences (such as speeding). Currently, drivers who complete their P-Plates without recording offences receive a discount on their licence cost.

Hunters: the government’s Fox Bounty Program, where hunters collect bounties for the scalps and skins of foxes and wild dogs, will continue in 2015-’16, funded with $1 million.

The Flying Doctors in soft landing FERNY Creek Primary School enjoyed a special visitor last week, with the Royal Flying Doctors touching down.

The event featured an aeromedical simulator and a life-

size replica of a Flying Doctors plane fuselage, fitted out with communications and medical equipment.

The students were encouraged to climb inside the simu-

lator fuselage to see how the medical equipment works.

They also had the chance to be strapped in to a stretcher, try on the headphones and speak in the microphones.

BELGRAVE Heights Christian School encouraged its students to get creative last week, holding the ItzAAA festival.

No normal classes were run on 4 May as the whole school, from kindergarten to Year 12, chose creative electives.

Some of these electives included pavement art, pancake art, the scrap metal challenge, chocolate art, dance, band,

choral group and puppetmaking.

In all, the students were encouraged to express themselves.

Sarah Kelly, from the school, said the students enjoyed the chance to show imagination.

“They were encouraged to dress up, with the theme being ‘who am I?’” she said.

“The day was filled with creativity, enthusiasm and fun.”

Meanwhile, the school also participated in Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea for the first time, with students donating money to cancer research.

They also took part in the Biggest Banana Split.

There were more than 250 bananas, which stretched endto-end in the school car park.

Students helped to prepare the banana splits, raising more than $500 for their efforts.

Puzzling out this vice Inherent Vice (MA15+) Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston BASED on Thomas Pynchon’s famous novel, Inherent Vice is an intensely confounding work.

Perpetually stoned private investigator “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) is assigned by his ex-girlfriend to investigate a plot against her partner.

This case plunges Doc into a dizzying web of cults, mental hospitals and drug syndicates.

Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the great modern film artists, but he’s never been one for brevity.

Anderson has always had a gift for engaging character dynamics and narrative payoff, and less for pacing or structure.

This approach has worked exceptionally well in the past, as There Will Be Blood, The Master and Boogie Nights are all enthralling character pieces, but Inherent Vice has an ’everything including the kitchen sink’ approach to drama.

The film’s disjointed feel is initially fitting, as it reflects the drug-fuelled haze Doc views the world through.

Phoenix is an affable slacker as Doc, the tone is one of bizarre, subversive craziness

(again, appropriate for the ’70s setting) and the diverse ensemble cast is highly entertaining.

But Inherent Vice feels at least an hour too long, and is crammed full of simplistic characters and loosely-connected plot threads.

The sluggish, meandering plot wears you down and dilutes the appeal of the acting and weirdness, and Inherent Vice has little of the thematic richness that marked Anderson’s earlier work.

Fun while it lasts, Inherent Vice ultimately overstays its welcome.

By KATH GANNAWAY MORE than 40 quilts are set to take centre stage at the 10th Warratina Patchwork Exhibition over the next two weeks.

The work of quilters from Quilt Yarn and Sew in Wandin, the range and variety of quilts came together to transform the lavender drying shed at the popular Warratina Lavender Farm into a colourful and warm winter escape.

Anne-Marie Manders from Warratina started the exhibition to encourage people to visit the farm in the off-season.

“I have always loved patchwork and decided to put on an exhibition for one week,” she said.

“It was so successful we decided to extend it and it’s been a two-week event ever since.”

The entry fee goes to the local CFA and donations are also taken in the tearooms.

Join a pack to face up to the VCE THE Year 9 program at Belgrave Heights Christian School has its own slogan for this year - ‘Don’t hold back, join the pack!’

Year 9 is traditionally a year where students feel most disengaged, unmotivated and can present a behavioural challenge for teachers.

Most schools now offer an alternative program for Year 9 students, and the Belgrave Heights Christian School model is now in its fifth year.

This year presents an opportunity for fresh, vibrant experiences alongside their vigorous academic workload.

Wholesome education on offer

There is much focus on each individual student.

Physical activity plays a big part in the school curriculum. brought to the students in an engaging and creative manner.

These subjects are also coupled with lessons in German, craft, music, gymnastics, and later on woodwork and orchestra, forming an all-encompassing, rich and nurturing curriculum.

In the high school, this diversity in education carries through for all students.

The Steiner school is often thought of as a school for artistically minded students; however, Steiner himself emphasised the importance of mathematics and the sciences.

In the upper school, there is a maturity and mutual respect in the way students and teachers relate.

THE first thing to catch your eye as you walk into Little Yarra Steiner School is the curved roofs nestled among gardens, with the backdrop of Mount Donna Buang’s tree-covered hills.

At the end of the school day, parents and students socialise at the Tuesday afternoon minimarket, reflecting a strong, supportive community among the families.

The education, which is based on the works of Rudolf Steiner, focuses on the developmental needs particular to each age.

Everyday English for adults MOUNTAIN District Learning Centre in Ferntree Gully has been helping adults to improve their spelling, reading, grammar and maths for nearly 40 years.

MDLC has recently joined forces with the Outer Eastern Literacy Program in Boronia to provide even more options for people across the district to improve their literacy, numeracy and English language skills.

They even offer an evening

literacy program specifically designed for men.

Not many people will be aware that 44 per cent of Australian adults don’t have the literacy skills they need to cope with the demands of everyday life and work.

People who struggle with reading can often find inventive ways of hiding this, and will do anything to avoid the stigma, which unfortunately still exists towards people who

experience low literacy.

The good news, of course, is everyone is able to learn, and learning as an adult is a different experience than when we were at school.

As a student’s reading, writing, spelling and maths gradually improves, they are able to transform their lives, and open up to new opportunities both at work and in their everyday life.

Sometimes people might already have basic reading and

writing skills, but want to improve them so they can undertake.

Friendship, success and opportunity are all part of the culture at Yarra Ranges SDS.

Experience all part of development YARRA Ranges SDS (formerly Mount Evelyn Special Developmental School) has made a link with a local business, Yarra Valley Gourmet Foods, to provide their students with real life work experience.

When Assistant Principal, Janet Taylor, met the staff at Yarra Valley Gourmet Foods, at a local market, a mutually beneficial relationship blossomed.

Jacqui Harvey, the owner of Yarra Valley Gourmet Foods, has described the students who have completed work experience at her business as brilliant and a part of their community.

She also has appreciated the awareness it has made of the community as a whole. While she admits she has enjoyed giving back to the community, she feels the students who attend have given a lot to her workplace.

The students, who attend, work in the warehouse and help with the packaging and labelling of their products.

It gives the students a chance to apply the numeracy and literacy skills they learn in class and be a part of a workplace.

At Yarra Ranges SDS, the students have numerous opportunities to practice their work

skills both inside and outside the school.

The school has a school cafe and canteen program, a gardening program and enterprise group in the school.

The students also do Meals on Wheels, warehousing at Eastern Food Alliance, and gardening at the Yarraview Nursery.

All these relationships are of vital importance to the school community.

Links with local business are highly valued and sought after.

Yarra Hill Secondary College encourages mutual respect among teachers and students.

Small school feel, big effort YARRA Hills Secondary College is a multi-campus state secondary school serving the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne. The college has a Year 7 to 10 Mount Evelyn Campus, as well as a Mooroolbark Campus, which houses a Year 7 to 10 ‘junior school’ and a Year 11 and 12 ‘senior school’ on the same site.

THE annual Servicemen’s golf match took place at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday for the right to have their names etched into the base of a trophy produced in 1946.

The trophy was cast from melted brass shell casings and it is magnificent.

A bunch of sporty ex-servicemen appeared for a blearyeyed roll-call as did a heap of civvies.

The Serviceman winner, for the second time in two years, was Peter Clarke (18) with 31 stableford points.

The second place was decided by countback with Peter Clowes (17) leading from Bobby Kennedy (18) with each player on 30 points.

The civvies saw a clear winner with John Carvill (19) bolting from the first tee to never be headed when he came in with 45 points.

The nearest to him, and quite a way back, was David Aitken (28) with 41.

Terry Casson (34) scored 40 points while Graham White(17) scored 39 including a majestic eagle on the 333m par-four 16th hole.

John Van Hoorn (23) also scored 39, while David Mackey and Dennis Fuller both managed 38.

Carvill was nearest the pin on the 4th, Mike Litchfield the 7th, White the 12th, Clarke the 13th and Peter Clowes, once again, picked up the pro pin cash on the 18th.

By JUDY ORREN YVMDFNL DIVISION 1 SENIORS Olinda Ferny Creek 13.17 (95) d Warburton Millgrove 7.12 (54) APART from a little lapse in the third quarter, Olinda was in control for the majority of this clash.

They held Warburton to just one point in the first term, while they booted 3.3 to grab a 20-point lead at the first break.

The second term was an even battle but for all the hard work Warburton put in, they only reduced the margin to 19 points at the long break.

Warburton did get right back into the contest in the third, booting five goals to three and Olinda’s lead was just eight points at the final change.

Olinda’s run came to the fore in the last as Warby looked a little flat footed.

Olinda booted five goals, while holding Warburton to just four behinds to come away with a pretty good 41-point victory.

The first three quarters were pretty even. Woori got out to a two-goal lead at quarter time, then Monbulk reduced that to just five points by the half.

Woori Yallock looked to be getting on top in the third, as they slotted four goals to two, and their lead at the last change was out to 20 points.

The last quarter saw Monbulk play arguably their best football of the season to date.

They took the game on and took their chances and it paid off as they slammed on six goals to two to turn the game on its head and run out ninepoint winners in their best victory for the year.

Wandin really did save their best for last and hammered home their advantage with a nine goal-to-three last quarter to firm even further as premiership favourites.

Healesville broke the game open a little in the second term as they started to spread the ball a lot better.

They slotted six goals to one to lead by 26 points at the half.

The second half saw Healesville stretch its lead as the game progressed.

They booted four goals to one in the third and finished off well with a six goal-to-one final quarter to come away with a workmanlike victory.

Mount Evelyn 19.9 (123) d Belgrave 14.16 (100) Mount Evelyn has broken through with its first victory of the year with an upset win over Belgrave by 23 points.

Mount Evelyn started the day well with a five goal to one first term to set the tone for the day.

Belgrave did hit back in the second, booting six goals, but Mount Evelyn still managed four majors to lead by 10 points at half-time.

The third term was a good one for Mount Evelyn as they went direct and booted 6.2 for the quarter.

Belgrave had the same amount of scoring shots, but scored 3.5 for the quarter which gave Mount Evelyn a 25-point lead at the last break.

The last quarter was a good battle, but every time Belgrave looked to challenge, Mount Evelyn would reply.

In the end, Mount Evelyn had 10 separate goal scorers to Belgrave’s four, which proved the difference in the end.

This clash started off even enough with Wandin up by just for points at the first change, but after that Wandin slowly started getting on top.

They weren’t at their best over the next two quarters, but still managed to outscore Upwey 11 goals to five, and their lead was out to 41 points at the last change.
