Agriculture FEDERAL Minister Barnaby Joyce has opened an electorate office at Tenterfield, at the top of his New England electorate. Mr Joyce said the office, which would have one permanent staff member and one part-timer, was the first in the town for more than 100 years and fulfils an election promise made during the 2013 campaign. The opening comes less than two months after the National Party came close to losing the state seat of Lismore, which now includes Tenterfield, to the Greens. Re-elected Member for Lismore, Thomas George undertook the official duties to help Mr Joyce open the office on Friday 1 May 2015 and was joined by about 70 constituents and National Party faithful. A spokesman for Mr Joyce said the office had “been in the planning for the past 12-14 months” but had been “held up by bureaucracy”. Mr Joyce, whose main office is in Tamworth said Tony Windsor, the previous Member for New England
had an office in Inverell. However with Senator John Williams, who works closely with the Agriculture Minister, already having an office in Inverell, Mr Joyce decided it would be more beneficial to open in Tenterfield “the officially-recognised home of Australia’s Federation”. Mr Joyce said Tenterfield was a vital and important community in the north of the electorate and its place on the corridor of commerce - the New England Highway. The proof of that importance, he said was reinforced with Federal Government funding for the Bolivia Hill re-alignment and the Tenterfield Heavy Vehicle Bypass. Mr Joyce said he was looking forward to using the Tenterfield electorate office as a base to service the northern end of the electorate and to undertake meetings with constituents. His spokesman said as Agriculture Minister the office’s proximity to Queensland was also a consideration. He said Mr Joyce was looking to get to the office “as often as he can”.

SMALL businesses, families and pensioners will be at the centre of this year’s Federal Budget to be handed down next week. Already we know there will be a “families assistance package” targeted at working parents paying for childcare, and a small business tax cut. Plans are also locked in to tighten access to the pension, which is set to scale back payments for hundreds of thousands of older Australians. The government has hinted that Tuesday night’s budget won’t seek to protect federal coffers at the expense of households, with Tony Abbott calling it “dull and routine”.
Flat wages growth and sliding iron ore prices have left a multi-billion dollar hole in federal revenue, with predictions the government will sink $14 billion deeper into deficit next financial year. Deloitte Access Economics partner Chris Richardson said key contributors to the budget blowout included the retreat of the Chinese commodity boom, shortcomings of the domestic political climate and the resulting gridlock in the senate on a range of savings measures. “We still see deficits as far as the eye can see, with the repair task getting harder both because of economics commodity prices and wages - and because of politics,” Mr Richardson said.

By SONJA KOREMANS ALMOST a week after storms tore through the Southern Downs, the mop-up task continues with streets still strewn with branches, homes and community facilities awaiting repair, and some roads only just reopening. Council, businesses and households have been left with hefty clean-up bills in the wake of wild weather on Friday night which brought flash flooding and wind gusts of up to 90km/h in the Warwick region. Almost 5000 people were left without power for several hours and woke to scenes of destruction with fallen trees and power lines - some live - over houses, cars and roads. Southern Downs Regional Council mayor Peter Blundell said the municipal clean-up bill would be considerable, with more than 20 council workers called in over the weekend to clear debris, and significant damage to some community facilities, including children’s playgrounds. But the region fared better than other parts of the state hit by the storm cell, particularly Queensland’s south-east where five people lost their lives and many were left homeless by the floodwaters. Insurance companies have received about 7500 claims, with initial losses estimated at $26 million, according to the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA). Most of these claims are from businesses and residents in Queensland’s south east. ICA CEO Rob Whelan said the flow of claims was initially slow over the weekend.

Search warrants at Border Street, Happy Valley Road, Rockwell Street and Raleigh Streets, Wallangarra resulted in the location of cannabis, amphetamines, smoking utensils and drug paraphernalia. Inquiries are being conducted by Wallangarra Police and it is expected a number of people will be charged incoming days with various drug-related offences.

POLICE swooped on a local Stanthorpe hotel after information was received regarding two persons wanted on warrants and other offences residing at that location. A male, 45 years of ageand his female companion, 38, were taken into custody and charged with an outstanding offence of unlawfully using a motor vehicle, possessing dangerous drugs and a number of outstanding failure to appear warrants. Police attended an address in Wolfram Street, Stanthorpe where they arrested a 24-year-old man for breach of bail and a return to prison warrant. The following morning while being walked to court in Warwick, the male escaped lawful custody, albeit for a very short time. After being detained by police at a local shopping centre he appeared in court and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment for his actions.

Scourge of ice IN RURAL and regional communities, people repeatedly tell me the drug ice is causing serious damage. The statistics say the number of ice users has doubled since 2010. I’ve taken a personal interest in this topic for some time, and now, as Minister responsible for drugs policy, the issue of ice is a key priority. Last year I directed the Australian National Advisory Council on Drugs (ANACAD) to make ice its number one issue. In March at the UN Conference on Narcotics in Vienna, I had member countries agree to share research and co-operate on this issue. At countless police stations I’m told the same thing: “We can’t police our way out of this”. We must reduce demand for ice; so we also need education and treatment services to get people off ice. I’ve visited treatment facilities, and I’ve seen that ice cuts down those with money and those without (who often then turn to crime); mums and dads as well as youth - people from all walks of life. Every community I visit seems to have a tragic ice story - recently I heard about a brother and sister suiciding after becoming hooked on ice. The recent Australian Crime Commission report confirmed organised crime gangs are targeting rural and regional Australia. The Prime Minister, myself and the Minister for Justice have announced a taskforce to report to government on the ice situation - what’s working and what’s not - and produce an interim report by mid-year. This will help us build a National Ice Action

What drivel THE sickening drivel and unfair criticism regarding the actions of the Australian Federal Police in passing to Indonesian Police vital information regarding drug smuggling by a group now known as the ‘Bali Nine’, should be dismissed out of hand. The police concerned acted in accordance with their undertaken duties and oath of office. THEY did not sacrifice any lives. With lawfully acquired intelligence indicating the ‘Bali Nine’ were in Indonesia to commit the most serious crime of drug smuggling, the Australian Federal Police did what was reasonably expected of them and notified the Indonesian Police. What is wrong with that? Having procured the drugs, where could there be any guarantee the smugglers would not dispose of the drugs before arriving back in Australia? Lou Rowan, Yangan.
Emissions targets I WOULD like to commend the Abbott Govern-
ment on its clear and concise thinking on the issue, deciding to pay corporate polluters not to pollute that is. Being a low-income pensioner I would certainly refrain from augmenting my pension by picking pockets, stealing cars or breaking and entering, if the government would send some of these scarce ‘taxpayers’ dollars my way for a similar incentive. As a motorist too, I would relish being paid to be a responsible road user i.e not speeding, not drink driving, and obeying all traffic signs and lights. Yes, paying everyone to be good citizens rather than fining a few who transgress should be a most positive and effective policy; it may however become expensive as all and sundry seek to prove that they also need the incentive. Is this treason? WHAT a disgrace our people have become, are they afraid of their own highly paid public servants or too uneducated to know right from wrong? I haven’t attended memorial services for a very long time, except the last two, I attended Memorial Day last in Warwick, and will not again. In the (stupid) belief that the 100 years Memorial of Anzac Day in a small town like Tannymorel might be better done, I did attend this Memorial Day in Tannymorel. Members of the current ADF (Australian De-
fence Force) were present with their plastic firearms and uniforms immaculately presented. Unfortunately the ADF appear to not be educated in matters of apparent treason because when it was announced that the National Anthem would now be played, the National Song Advance Australia Fair was played instead, that is NOT the National Anthem as any educated person should know, Australia’s National Anthem is God Save The Queen, as it has always been and always will be, and to treat the Queen and the lost ADF personnel with such contempt and disrespect sounds very much like treason to myself, especially on the 100 year anniversary since so many of our honourable defence personnel died in such horrible circumstances that they did. Our world war defence personnel genuinely swore allegiance to the Monarch, they fought valiantly for the Crown, country and their families, do current ADF personnel still swear their allegiance likewise? World war ADF personnel carried our flag through hell with great honour and they wore the Crown on their uniforms with great honour, still today the ADF wear the Crown on their uniform. Why did the ADF personnel present on Anzac Day (and Memorial Day) not complain, and in particular NOT do something about this apparent act of treason? They appear to be lacking in the spirit that our ADF personnel had during these repulsive world wars; the Anzac Spirit appears lost in current ADF personnel. PERFECT weather, but loads of blisters. That’s how a group of Stanthorpe residents walking 16,000 kilometres around Australia have described the first week of their mammoth adventure. After two years of planning, five gutsy walkers and support crew left Stanthorpe on Saturday to begin the Southern Downs Walk for Life. Prostate cancer patient Ian Robbins and his wife Christine are leading the group on a 14-month trip to raise money for the fight against prostate and breast cancer. Southern Free Times spoke with the couple, who along with the dedicated walkers were resting at the Toowoomba Showgrounds yesterday. Mr Robbins said the group, which includes five walkers and support crew, were settling into their routine well. “We have had warm weather and no rain but there are certainly a few blisters,” Mr Robbins said. “The first week has been about establishing a routine for the journey ahead. “The group is setting off for Nanango later in the week and then Childers,” Mr Robbins said. ONE of the Warwick district’s oldest citizens has passed away, ending a remarkable but lucky life of hard work. Unwell for just one day at home, Douglas Bruce Ross Mackenzie passed away last month peacefully at the age of 96. “Dad was out in the paddock with me fencing just days before he died,“ said Bruce’s younger son and full-time carer, and local councillor, Jamie Mackenzie. “At age 94, he rebuilt cattle yards, cutting and lugging 14-foot ironbark posts.” Bruce Mackenzie was Killarney’s oldest citizen. His mother was one of the district’s pioneering families, arriving in Brisbane from the Scottish Highlands during the 1840s when it was a tiny settlement of 600 people. Bruce’s Killarney home is on land selected by his grandfather Andrew Canning who established the silver service Royal Hotel nearby, often entertaining early governors who came for trout fishing. Bruce’s father, William Ross Mackenzie, was a commercial traveller, gold mine owner, flour mill manager and businessman. Born in Rockhampton in 1918, Bruce’s earliest memories were of queues of funeral cortege with victims of the Spanish flu that spread from returning World War I soldiers. Bruce’s elder brother and esteemed business partner for more than 70 years was the late Cr Andrew Ferrier Ross Mackenzie. His younger brother, the late Dr
Bruce Mackenzie was Killarney's oldest citizen. William Keith Ross Mackenzie, an oral surgeon on Wickham Terrace, was the first to graduate from the University of Queensland with dual degrees in medicine and dentistry in the war years. Bruce attended the Killarney State School and travelled by the rail to school in Warwick for three years. With his father and brother Ferrier, Bruce started business in 1936 as Mackenzies’ Emporium supplying groceries, drapery, footwear and hardware, the first school uniforms, floor coverings, furniture, bedding, haberdashery, dress materials and manchester to the Killarney district 1183344-DJ19-15

He loved letter writing. By chance, Bruce admired a photo of the Tasmanian nurse in the New Guinea jungle, was given her address and they started the exchange of many letters. Bruce and Pat met at the end of World War II, married in 1947, and lived happily in Killarney for 50 years before her sudden death in 1997. Bruce retained a positive outlook
on life marvelling at road improvements, new energy innovations, current events and his family’s career achievements. He had a lifelong interest in aircraft and travel since flying with Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in Sydney as a boy, visiting New Zealand in the 1930s and on active service in New Guinea in World War II. Since 1962, there have been 17 overseas trips for Bruce to Europe, USA and to see his family in China, the Middle East and Canada as well as diverse sites from Sweden, Kuwait to Rio de Janeiro. At age 90, he rode camels in Egypt and toured Greece and travelled to Russia in 2011. This time last year, he sailed across the Indian Ocean to Sri Lanka. Bruce often advocated that people should ‘count their blessings’. “We smile that he made it thus far,” Jamie Mackenzie said “after many near misses in life ranging from busters off childhood ponies, dodging bullets in warfare, standing on a stingray buried in the Tallebudgera sands, being stung by a swarm of bees and falls at home in recent times. “Bruce was a kind gentlemen but not consciously a public figure who took an avid interest the Killarney’s progress and current events. Bruce appreciated the open spaces, fresh food, clear skies and clean air of home. He is survived by four of his six children, 10 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter born in London just a few weeks ago.

Driven to a daily delight DRIVERS from all over the eastern states found their way to Morgan Park Raceway at the weekend, much to the delight of local car enthusiasts. Historic cars of all shapes and sizes were on display and on the track for a special event organised by the Historic Racing Car Club of Queensland. The event featured historic touring cars 1953’72, heritage touring cars 1973-’92 and Australian TransAm 1963-’74. The second historic car club event for the year at Morgan Park will be Historic Queensland on 4-5 July.

What’s On Gale-force gala Sounds virtually excellent FROM humble beginnings 23 years ago the Opera in the Vineyard has grown to be widely recognised as one of the signature events on the Granite Belt calendar. The Stanthorpe Rotary Club and Ballandean Estate ensured that the event was a great success despite Friday night’s cyclonic conditions which had threatened to derail it according to Ballandean estate’s Leanne Puglisi, who co-ordinates the event with Stanthorpe Rotary. “Last year freezing conditions with icy winds, sleet and minus temperatures forced the event under cover for only the second time in its history,” she said. “This year cyclonic winds threatened to bring down the iconic 60-plus-metre marquee and damaged the netting over the open air concert amphitheatre so we were again forced to hold the event inside the marquee.” Many of the 800 patrons had to battle the elements to get to Stanthorpe for the afternoon concert. Four years ago Opera in the Vineyard forged a partnership with Opera Queensland - and baritone Michael Lewis, soprano Natalie Peluso, tenor Jaewoo Kim and mezzo-soprano Nicole Youl delighted patrons with a program that included a

According to Artistic Director Richard Tognetti, audiences can see the players’ lightning-quick hands in a way not possible in a concert hall, hear the unique sounds of the ACO’s multi-million-dollar collection of instruments and feel the rush of being immersed in this “bad ass classical band” (Time Out New York). “ACO Virtual is an educational tool, as well as an immersive, highly entertaining experience,” he said. “It is a ground-breaking experiment.” Built by Sydney digital media production company Mod

Productions, ACO Virtual uses state-of-the-art video technology and features projections of the ACO’s acclaimed musicians in either 2D or 3D. Audiences are surrounded, with the sound of each musician coming from the direction of their individual projections. A touch-screen “music stand” allows users to spotlight and listen to one musician, a section of instruments or their desired selection of players. Audiences essentially step ‘inside’ a concert and are immersed in a cinematic experience, surrounded by the musicians and manipulating what they hear and see, just like in a video game. Mod Productions
uses 13 stereoscopic camera rigs to capture audio and 3D images of the ACO musicians performing in front of greenscreens in a Fox Studios’ sound stage. This performance-capture technique meant the images of individual performers could be isolated and manipulated, allowing the audience to control the performance of the whole orchestra. ACO Virtual will open on Friday 8 May with a special concert style viewing of the entire performance at 6.30pm. The interactive exhibition then continues until Sunday 7 June. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday 10 am to 4pm and on weekends 10 am to 1pm.

Feast for the fans By CASEY O’CONNOR RUGBY League fans enjoyed a football feast when play eventually got underway last weekend. Lake Suncorp was better suited to water skiing than rugby league Friday night when officials pulled the pin on the Test. What a weekend it turned out to be. The Kiwis stamped their authority at the International level, leaving question marks hanging over the future of some Kangaroos and their coach Tim Sheens. In the lead-up to Origin, the City Country game left Blues supporters and the coach with as many questions as answers. As the Kangaroos were left to reflect on what went so horribly wrong, league fans were celebrating the spectacular football displayed in the battle of the Pacific Nations. Coaches and tipsters this weekend have to deal with the fallout from the weekend’s game with several players injured or facing suspension. The Broncos and Panthers and Roosters and Tigers kick start round nine on Friday night. Roosters play makers James Maloney and Mitchell Pearce could be playing for a Blues jersey when they take on the Tigers. The Roosters have been winless since back rower Aidan Guerra suffered a broken jaw. They will be hoping his return heralds a change of fortune. The young Tigers will need to be at their best here. In a blow for Tigers fans, Tim Simona injured his ankle playing for Samoa and will be sidelined until round 13. Expect to hear those Roosters crowing again after Friday night. Brisbane will be sweating on the outcome of Sam Thaiday’s appointment with the judiciary after he was charged for a crusher tackle. Penrith caught plenty of tipsters napping with their win over Cronulla in round eight. Their playing stocks will be strengthened in the coming weeks as players return from injury. They are definitely a team on the up. Reports indicate Darius Boyd could return here for the Broncos and several teammates with niggling injuries will be better for the week break. Broncos fans will be looking for a win to keep Brisbane in the hunt at the top of the table. The game between Canberra and the Gold Coast is one of the toughest of the round for tipsters. City five eighth Blake Austin pushed his Origin chances on the weekend but the Raiders will be anxiously awaiting the outcome of another judiciary hearing after he was reported twice during the City Country clash. The Titans have their share of problems with Greg Bird facing a lengthy suspension. As a serial offender Bird will be lucky to escape the wrath of the judiciary after his involvement in a lifting tackle. Both sides have emerged from a bad start
to the season and have good recent form over top sides. With no confidence, I am leaning ever so slightly to the Titans. Cronulla host the Warriors at Remondis and are another side to have cracked some good wins in recent rounds. The Warriors should be full of confidence after the Kiwis win in the Test. If Manu Vatuvei and his teammates reproduce the form they showed at Suncorp they should win here. Thurston gave his all in the Test. He will return to 1300 Smiles on Saturday night with that same attitude against the Bulldogs. The Cowboys recent return to form has not surprised their coach Paul Green who puts it down to improved defence and better combinations. Josh Morris is expected to take his place for the Dogs in this game however Josh Reynolds is another facing the judiciary after the representative round, charged over a tripping incident in the City Country clash. The Dogs have been a bogey side for the Cowboys in the past, but I expect the home side to get the points here. Recent weather events may prevent Sunday’s game between the Sea Eagles and Knights from being played at Brookvale. As this report goes to press, the NRL are yet to make a determination on where the game will be played due to ongoing concerns with the surface at Brookvale. Manly are desperate to turn their fortunes around. Jamie Lyons is expected to play, however Steve Matei will be a spectator, under suspension for one match. The Knights have dropped off the pace since their flying start to the season. After a strong performance for Country, Knights, winger Akuila Uate will be looking to impress Origin selectors here. This will be close, but perhaps a Manly win. Wrapping up Sunday football, the Eels host Melbourne Storm at Pirtek. They will be bolstered by the return of flying winger Sam Radradra. Parra have only three wins this season and have not delivered as expected. Melbourne players return from representative duties and Billy Slater is back from a shoulder. This season we have seen glimpses of brilliance from Melbourne and at other times they have done just enough to win. Smith and Cronk will be keen to silence their critics after the Test, and I expect they will be driving a Storm win here. The Bunnies and St George close the round on Monday night at ANZ. After a disappointing loss in round eight, the Bunnies have plenty to prove. Greg Inglis appears to be struggling with injury and admitted his performance in the green and gold was below par.
The Bunnies are not the slick machine they were in 2014. St George has surprised tipsters and even their own supporters up to this point. Josh Dugan has been in good form but could be sidelined here after picking up an injury on Sunday. On the back of recent performances, the Dragons could have too much fire for the Bunnies. The way this competition is shaping who would know. Letters More smoggy thinking CHRIS Leamy seems to think I approve of air pollution (Free Times, 30 April). No sensible person likes the pollution of air, water and public places by humans. But none whatsoever is caused by carbon dioxide, which is a colourless, non-toxic gas of life on which all plants depend. In these days of carbon-neurosis, coal gets blamed for all bad things, even the Asian smog. What causes this smog? Dust is a significant component. Winds whip up dust from dry lands, roads and the huge Gobi and Arabian Deserts, or an up-wind volcano explodes. No dust comes from a modern well-designed coal-fired power station. Smogs may also contain soot and ash. These come from open fires all over Asia burning wood, cow dung, paper, cardboard, plastic, rubber tyres and other rubbish; from stoves and heaters using unwashed high sulphur coal or high-ash briquettes; from forest fires in Indonesia, cremations in India and yeon-tans in Korea. Some comes from ancient combustion engines, coal boilers and furnaces. None comes from a modern coal-fired power station with full pollution control equip-

These fumes are produced by open fires and vehicle exhausts, especially from badly-maintained vehicles and phut-phuts. They are not released by modern power stations whose exhausts comprise nitrogen, water vapour and carbon dioxide - the three natural gases of life. Those blaming coal power for smog need to read the history of last century’s deadly smogs in London and Pittsburgh. These were cleared by bans on open-fire heaters and cookers and the provision of “clean coal by wire” - electricity produced in modern power stations with good emissions controls and burning washed highquality coals. Piped coal gas also helped clean the air of London. Replacing dirty open fires with clean electricity and cleaning up vehicle exhausts will also work wonders in clearing up the Asian smog. Dud predictions GILLARD’S Climate Council head Tim Flannery said in 2005: “There’s only two
years’ water supply in Warragamba Dam ... drought conditions will become permanent in eastern Australia”. In 2007 he said that even rain that falls is not going to fill dams, and, “In Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane, water supplies are so low they need desalinated water urgently, possibly in as little as 18 months”. But in fact, 15 of Brisbane’s dams on 1 May 2015 are 100 per cent full and eight of Sydney’s dams are over 90 per cent full. The forecast on 1 May 2015 was for more rains to fill our dams and river systems. For the second time in a week, ABC Radio National Breakfast runs a long segment on global warming entirely from the scare-mongering alarmist side. Flannery also said that warming would cause massive sea level rises. In fact, we have had 219 months of NO warming based on linear trends! Critical facts are again omitted. Why the distortions? Why the ongoing deliberate imbalance by taxpayer funded entities? Where is the intellectual integrity in those who seemingly worship creatures, not the Creator? Geoff Pickering, Warwick.
Man’s daring dash for freedom ends behind bars By SONJA KOREMANS AN ALLEGED armed robber’s attempt to escape a date at the Warwick Magistrates’ Court has earned him a sixmonth stint behind bars. Adam Vester Rose seized an opportunity while making the 10m walk from the Warwick watchhouse to the courthouse. The former Warwick man slipped his police escort and made a dash for freedom. Warwick police acting officer-in-charge Acting Senior Sergeant Shane Reid said a team of seven police officers
then chased Rose on foot. Despite his efforts in outrunning officers, the 24-yearold’s time as a free man was short lived. “He escaped but we found him hiding under a car in the underground carpark at Rose City Shoppingworld,“ Acting Sen Sgt Reid said. Rose was returned to the courthouse with one count of escaping lawful custody added to his charge sheet. Magistrate Bevan Manthey sentenced Rose to six months jail and he will be eligible to apply for bail on 29 May.

WOMEN’S rugby league is certainly kicking some goals, pardon the pun. Recently, the Australian national team, the Jillaroos secured some much-needed sponsorship when Harvey Norman announced a three-year jersey sponsorship of the Australian Ladies side. A replay of last weekend’s Trans Tasman clash between the Jillaroos and Kiwi Ferns will be broadcast this Sunday by Channel Nine. It will air prior to the NRL Telstra Premiership broadcast between the Eels and Storm from Pirtek Stadium. It is the first time that Women’s Rugby league will feature on free to air TV. Unfortunately, Queensland viewers will not get to see the game. I realise that the move will raise an eyebrow or two of the traditionalists who see league as a male sport, however don’t be too quick to judge until you have seen these girls in action. They play a tough uncompromising brand of football that would surprise many. They have outstanding ball skills and never take a backward step. Many who watched a women’s game for the first time last weekend quickly became converts, surprised at how entertaining the game was. There are no Prima Donnas among this lot (there was the odd one in the Men’s changerooms however) - no million dollar contracts and third party deals. They play for the love of the game. Something that often seems to be missing in their male counterparts. After the bath that the Kangaroos got at Suncorp courtesy of the Kiwis, perhaps they should take a long hard look at what it meant to those girls to wear the green and gold last Sunday. Well done Jillaroos, congratulations and keep kicking goals. - Casey JILLAROOS RIDE WORTHWHILE LAST weekend was a roller coaster ride for the Australian Jillaroos. The Australian girls and the Kiwi Ferns were midway through their warm up on Friday night in preparation for their own Test match, the curtain-raiser Anzac Test when the game was firstly postponed and then cancelled due to the deluge at Suncorp. Then came the decision to play the Test matches on Sunday which meant unlike their male counterparts, many of the players would have to work extra shifts reshuffle travel arrangements and call sympathetic bosses. One player, Latoya Billy has a three-day journey to get home to Moa Island in the Torres Strait - those arrangements had to be postponed until Monday. But with the chance to wear the green and gold once again and to square up after being beaten in the Nine’s competition early this year, there were no complaints. The wait was worthwhile for the girls. A hattrick to talented debutant Mahalia Murphy helped the Jillaroos to a 22-14 win over the archrivals the Kiwi Ferns on Sunday. MUD LARK ON THE GOLF COURSE CONDITIONS were damp on the Stanthorpe Golf course after Friday night’s wild weather, however Mark Hendry showed the form of a true mudlark. The damp conditions proved no hazard to him, who carded a nett 66 three shots ahead of his nearest rival to win the May monthly medal in Stanthorpe. Richard Reardon, (nett 69) was his closest rival, taking out the runner’s-up spot. Mark had a controlled round, scoring a 38 on the front nine and 37 back for his total of 75. Dylan Barraclough returned a score of 73 to have best gross on the day and runner-up; Richard Reardon returned lowest putts for the round - 22. Kev Rowling claimed both men’s pin shots at 3/12 and 17. Dylan Barraclough nearly swept the pro-pins, taking both 1/10 and 9/18 with Fred Wharton picking up the other at 5/14. Hannah Reeves took out the ladies event. Her nett 79, one shot clear of Neta Thouard (nett 80). Neta did take both ladies pin shots at 3/12 and 17 to make up for a one shot difference. Margie Locke had the bet of the putting in the ladies competition- 29 putts for the round. Run down went to nett 72 for men and nett 81 for ladies. The monthly medal was sponsored by
Michael Lane of Soul Pattinson Chemist. The first round of the club championships was held in conjunction with the medal day. Dylan Barraclough might have started warm favourite in the A grade but he has a couple of players hot on his heels. Mark McCosker has the lead in B grade while the C grade is too close to name a possible winner at this stage. Three more rounds to go, so anything could happen. On Saturday, a stroke round has been scheduled and it is also the second round of club championships. A draw has been finalised and it is on the time sheet at the club. TIME SLOT SUITS ROB SPORTERS had a change of time slot last Sunday due to the early Pennants game. An afternoon tee off was just the ticket for Rob Reeves who nailed a win and shot the Best gross of the day. Mick Doorley was the runner-up, and the run-downs went to Angelo Maugeri and Paul Byrnes. Dick Hilton picked up the Pin shot on the 12th. We have come to expect that Hannah Reeves will not be far from the action, and she picked up the Pro Pin on Sunday and also took home a meat tray. The other meat tray went home with Marg Locke. This Sunday the annual Maureen Bates Memorial will be played. It is a nine hole Two Ball Ambrose event: 8.30am with 9am Shotgun start. Organisers have been hard at work and are hoping for great weather and a big turnout for the event. There are lots of prizes on offer and a Multi Draw Raffle. Hope to see you all there. RIDERS LEAD THE CHARGE IT WAS like the Charge of the Lighter Brigade at Inglewood SSAA , and it was led by the enthusiastic members of the Texas Pony Club. The Pony Club members arrived for the shooting phase of the Tetrathlon. The event also includes riding and, swimming skills. Placings were: 1st Charlie; 2nd Tom; 3rd Jamie (no surnames unfortunately). All competitors enjoyed the experience which was a lot of fun for the kids and the organisers. BALLANDEAN POSTPONE GAMES ORGANISERS and officials at the Ballandean Soccer club were forced last Sunday to postpone the Junior Colt’s, Senior Colt’s Ladies and Men’s matches set down to be played in Ballandean due to the state of the ground. Not often we see that happen on the Granite Belt. CLYDESDALES GALLOP OFF WITH TROPHY TOOWOOMBA Clydesdales made it back-toback wins in the QRL Central Division 47th Battalion Carnival payed last weekend in Roma. Teams from throughout the QRL Central Division play in the annual carnival. Seven BRL players joined their western counterparts in the South West Country side. South West Country played the Rockhampton Rustlers in their opening game. At halftime the Rockhampton Rustlers held a handy 14-4 lead. South West Country had a better second half, scoring two tries but the Rustlers proved too strong, winning 26-16. In a Man-of-the-Match performance, Miles flyer Matt Purcell again showed his class, scoring all three of the South West tries. Stanthorpe’s Jason Wilmot had two successful conversions. In their second game, South West took on North Wide Bay Rangers. At half time, South West led 16-6 before running away with the game 30-10. Purcell was once again a standout, scoring three tries and picking up his second Man-of-theMatch award for the carnival. Following their win, South West Country played Bundaberg Bears. South West had no answers against the classy Bundaberg outfit, going down 38-0. It is not the end of the road for the seven BRL players who will go on to play in the 2015 Queensland Outback Carnival later in the season. The two top teams at the end of the Pool Games played in the final on Sunday. Bundaberg Bears finished at the top of the table in pool B and Toowoomba Clydesdales topped pool A. In a tight contest, the Clydesdales extended their half-time lead (8-6) to defeat the Bears 2016 and give them back-to-back wins in the in the 47th battalion grand final. At the completion of the carnival, a Central Division “A” Grade side was selected to play in the State Titles. Five TRL players were included in the side including Wattles Matt Duggan who was named captain.

STILL WINNING BOB Holden saluted the chequered flag at Bathurst in a Mini clubman in 1966 - last weekend he drove in the Historic Racing Car Club (Qld) Autumn Nationals and took out the open handicap event driving a Toyota Corolla given to him in 1989. Holden returned to Morgan Park after tasting success on the circuit last year. There is no doubting Bob Holden’s racing credentials. He raced at the famous Bathurst track on 34 occasions. Last weekend, six of the cars he raced around the Bathurst circuit were in action at Morgan Park. There was no doubting Holden’s ability or class in the ’60s and ’70s, however he chose to remain a largely self-funded driver not seeking the bigger sponsorship deals. The veteran driver certainly has not lost his passion for the sport and said the turn out to last weekend’s event organised by Peter Walsh was impressive. A total of 180 drivers took part in the event in perfect conditions. TRL AND BRL TEAMS BACK IN ACTION AFTER a weekend of representative football across Central Division, local teams will be back in action this weekend. In TRL games, the Valleys host the Warwick Cowboys at Platz oval in what should be a great game. The teams sit sixth and seventh on the TRL ladder. Wattles will be expecting to continue their winning form when they travel to Oakey. On the BRL scene, Wallangarra host a muchanticipated local derby against the Tenterfield Tigers. There will be no love lost in this game with several Tenterfield players defecting to the Rams in the off season. Stanthorpe Gremlins have their first home game of the season on Saturday when they host the Killarney Cutters at Sullivan Oval.

First to fight was Scott Parry who having his first ever bout defeated Cunnamulla boxer Eric Hall for the 38kg title. Quite an achievement for his debut into boxing. Next to bring home a title was Paul Parry who won on a forfeit when others in the 57kg class declined to box him. Last but not least of the ‘Warwick’ boxers to fight was Josh Smith who, in normal life is a horse breaker showed all the toughness of his profession in losing to well-performed Terrence Tremacchi in what was undoubtedly the fight of the night. Smith who was having only his second bout fought a boxer who had won his last four bouts by K.O.
