By SONJA KOREMANS A PENSIONER who says he will be left homeless if the council proceeds with the forced sale of his house next month is hoping for an 11th-hour reprieve.

The sale comes after Leyburn resident Ron Whelan refused to pay his rates, claiming Southern Downs Regional Council was to blame for his house flooding in 2011 and 2013.

The 67-year-old owes the council $5000 in rate arrears.

Faulty road guttering led to a run off into the house during major Queensland floods causing $10,000 damage to the property, Mr Whelan said.

He said the first he knew about the council sale was when house hunters knocked on his door last week asking to inspect “a property bargain being sold by council”.

“I bought the house for $150,000 four years ago but council is only required to sell it for the land value, not the house and land package, to recover the $5000,” Mr Whelan said.

“I will be lucky if I get a few thousand dollars from the proceeds,” said Mr Whelan who has paid off his mortgage.

Under the Local Government Act of 2009 the council has the right to recover rates through the sale of land if it does not receive payment after three years.

Mr Whelan said he was not able to get a bank loan to pay off the arrears and is appealing to the council to halt the sale.

“What I would like is for council to give me the chance to sell the house myself and pay the debt, even if I get $50,000 it’s better than what the council will be paid by setting the reserve at land value only.”

SOUTHERN Downs residents turned out in record numbers to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landing.

Numbers at Anzac Day services across the region were more than double that of the year before, RSLs reported.

Warwick RSL Sub-branch President John Skinner said an estimated 2000 attended the Warwick dawn service and about 5000 spectators lined the streets for the main march.

More than 1000 schoolchildren took part in the Warwick parade, Mr Skinner said.

“We had enormous crowds last year in the lead-up to the centenary and were expecting the larger numbers this year but our communities really outdid themselves with the turnout this Anzac Day,“ Mr Skinner said.

In Stanthorpe, Yangan, Allora and Inglewood it was a similar story with residents eager to mark the 100 years since Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed on the Turkish peninsula and marched into history.

Crowds swarmed to pay their respects in the pre-dawn darkness, while hundreds more followed as the sun rose to cheer on parades.

THE Southern Downs Regional Council has made a bid for Warwick and Stanthorpe to be considered “regional capitals“.

SDRC has provided a submission detailing the reasons why the Southern Downs hubs should be named regional capitals by the Federal Government’s Senate Standing Committee.

At its general meeting on Tuesday the council agreed that the recognition would bring economic, tourism and financial benefits.

Police are yet to lay any charges over the Glen Aplin accident, as the Forensic Crash Unit continues its investigations.

FOUR people were injured when two vehicles collided at a crash blackspot of the New England Highway near Stanthorpe.

The crash occurred on Tuesday at 12.30pm at the intersection of the New England Highway and Lochiel Road, Dalveen.

An ambulance attended the scene and all four occupants of the cars suffered only minor injuries, police said.

The highway was reopened within an hour.

The accident comes days after five people were seriously injured in a car accident on the same highway.

Sgt O’Dea said backpacker car accidents were once only a problem during the major fruitpicking seasons but they were now occurring all year around.

Stanthorpe is one of many backpacker driving blackspots in Queensland.

“I started with the instalments but the home got flooded again and I had to lay all new floors. I couldn’t afford to keep up the payments.”

Mr Whelan said he had not approached banks for a loan to pay the debt.

If the 8 May sale goes ahead, Mr Whelan will be kicked off the property the day before, he said.

Southern Downs Regional Council CEO David Keenan said the sale was a regrettable but necessary decision.

THE Southern Downs Regional Council yesterday voiced its opposition to a Federal Government funding freeze.

SDRC Mayor Peter Blundell said a decision to freeze the indexation on Federal Assistance Grant (FAGs) would cost councils across Australia an estimated $925 million.

“The Australian Local Government Association and the state and local government associations are seeking the support of council for advocacy to have the Federal Government reverse the decision to freeze the indexation of FAGs,“ Cr Blundell said.

POLICE are calling for a change of law to make it compulsary for international backpackers to sit a test before they can drive on Australian roads.

The push comes after a car accident involving backpackers left five men injured on the New England Highway at Glen Aplin last week.

Preliminary inquiries reveal the car was being driven at high speed before crossing double lines and smashing into a tree.

The driver, a 27-year-old South Korean national, told police that he and his companions were running late for work and he was attempting to overtake a slow moving vehicle.

Stanthorpe Police traffic boss Sergeant Daniel O’Dea said local police regularly attended car accidents involving backpackers.

Police were fed up with blackpackers flouting roads rules, putting lives at risk and placing extra burden on hospitals and emergency service crews, Sgt O’Dea said.

“We are pushing for international visitors who are here on a working visa or student visa to sit an Australian road rules test, but this needs to come from a federal level,“ Sgt O’Dea said.

“We (Stanthorpe police) have a number of strategies in place with the Southern Downs Regional Council and Main Roads to work on improving the road education of international visa holders and reduce the number of crashes in the region.“ He said a fatal crash on the New England Highway last month that claimed the life of a 44-year-old Wallangarra woman

Lamb prices on the rise

By SONJA KOREMANS BOOMING international demand for Aussie lamb is driving up the price of our favourite meat.

That’s good news for farmers, but does it mean budget shoppers need to give lamb the chop?

Some butchers in capital cities this week are charging up to $60 a kilogram for cutlets, and the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates that lamb could reach $100 a kilogram by next year in some outlets.

Southern Free Times spoke with local butchers to see what it means for shoppers in the region. While butchers are paying more for lamb at Darling Downs saleyards - $160 up from $120 in January - most said they aren’t passing on the price rise.

“I’d rather wear the price rise and let it settle down for a few weeks,” said Ross Bell from R&P Bell Butchers in Warwick.

“You just wouldn’t have captive market in the country if you charged the sort of prices for lamb that you see in some Brisbane stores,” he said.

Other butchers that Southern Free Times spoke with in Warwick this week said they weren’t passing on the increase either.

Mr Bell said top end lamb predominantly sold at quality butcher shops was less volatile in price than second-grade meat, regardless of the cut.

Local meat traders said lamb price increases were more evident in supermarkets as most major chains sold a mix of both high and second-grade meat.

Meat and Livestock Australia this week said the lower Aussie dollar, tighter New Zealand production and continued global demand was likely to push sheep and lamb prices higher over the next few months.

Prices are being driven higher by a growing appetite for Aussie lamb in the the US, China and the Middle East, the MLA said.

Warwick butcher Ross Bell says butchers in country areas wouldn't maintain customers if they charged some of the prices for lamb seen in capital city stores.

CUTS FOR THRIFTY SHOPPERS MANY inexpensive lamb cuts require slow cooking to make them tender, but this means they impart their unique flavour.

Shoulder: This large cut makes a cheap alternative to leg. Roast whole joints studded with herbs, garlic and anchovies.

Alternatively you can cut it into chunks and cook slowly in a stew.

Chump: A neat juicy lamb cut. Try grilling, roasting or pan-frying the steaks, with or without the bone intact.

Breast: A cut taken from the underbelly of the lamb, cook this piece very slowly to render away the fat.

Stew meat: You can make rich stews using pieces cut from almost any part of a lamb. Butchers recommend stew meat from the shoulder, as it becomes tender during stewing and braising.

Shanks: The shank is the muscular bottom portion of the leg. It is the ultimate cut for slow braises that require rich, intense flavour. Long cooking causes the connective tissue to break down and yields succulent, fork-tender pieces.

Neck slices: Typically sold as thick, bone-in slices, lamb neck is inexpensive and full of flavor.

Like oxtail, neck meat lends a silky richness to stews, braises and other slow-cooked dishes.

Lamb mince: Easy to prepare and full of flavour in everything from spicy koftas to shepherd’s pie.

FOR most, the public controversy over fluoridating the local water supply is a distant memory, ending late last year with a ratepayer vote to remove it.

But some Southern Downs skeptics want proof that the fluoride tap was in fact turned off in Warwick, Stanthorpe, Allora and Yangan after the November decision.

Several have contacted Southern Free Times to raise the question. And we can confirm - from both sides of the debate - our water supplies are fluoruide-free and have been for months.

Save Our Shires chairman Bob Johnson, who petitioned the Southern Downs Regional Council to stop fluoridating water supplies, told Southern Free Times the group was in no doubt that the mineral was no longer being added.

“We followed it up with council soon after the decision was made and were told it (fluoride) would be out within a few weeks by January at the latest," Mr Johnson said.

Fluoridation was stopped several months ago.

“That was also ratified by the sale of the area’s fluoridation equipment.”

Southern Downs Regional Council issued a statement confirming that fluoridation ended in January. Quandry solved.

Darling Downs Easter Convention gets off to an exciting start!

Convention members began to arrive in Warwick on the Thursday evening, excited about setting up for another Easter Convention. The speakers John Mackay and Graham Hooper arrived with their wives for the week end. Tables containing relevant information on what the speakers would talk on were placed around the hall with other tables displaying Missionary Societies stories on their work all over the World.

On Friday, the convention began with a very responsive crowd of people who were keen to hear and learn about the Easter Message and how that message is so important to their daily living in our world. Saturday saw the Teenagers have a trip out to the Rock Swap with John Mackay from Creation Research. John shared with the teenagers the beauty of the rocks as well as how they were made up etc. It was bit of a mud bath as it had been raining quite heavily during the day but they all had a good time in the mud with the rocks. Then on Saturday evening a family games night was held. It was a light hearted time allowing people to get to know each other in a different way. There was lots of laughter and fun.

The younger children learnt to tell Bible stories in a pantomime style and they then shared a couple of those stories with the conventioneers on the Monday morning. Over all a wonderful time of teaching, sharing, and fun was had by all who came to the week end. There were quite a few day visitors from Warwick, Toowoomba and the surrounding Downs Area and they enjoyed their day. Next Easter, try to include the Convention in your Calender – March 26 to March 29, 2016.

THE house fire that killed a muchloved Warwick man has left his wife and daughter homeless and without any possessions.

Police described the blaze on Anzac Day as a double tragedy, with the death of a family man, and two of his loved ones escaping the fire with only the clothes they were wearing.

Darling Downs cricket umpire and former Sheffield Shield opening batsman Wilf Brown, 85, died in the Gore Street fire just before 2am on Saturday.

It is believed Mr Brown became trapped after battling the flames to try to save his dog, however police could not confirm the reports.

His wife Leonore and daughter Jane were able to flee the fire and firefighters frantically searched the property to locate Mr Brown.

Warwick police acting officer-incharge Shane Reid urged the local community to throw their support behind Mr Brown’s wife and daughter.

“Without losing sight that a member of the community has lost his life, there is a second tragedy here that the deceased man’s wife and daughter have lost everything,” he said.

They have nothing other than the pyjamas they were wearing when they escaped, he said.

“It’s understandable that the community focuses on the loss of life, but it’s also important to remember the family members who are left behind and to provide them with support.”

The cause of the fire is not yet known and a police investigation into the blaze is underway.

Eclectic mix of art

By SONJA KOREMANS WORKS from the region’s leading artists will be on display in Ballandean this week.

It’s a Case of Art in the Mill 2015 opens Friday 27 April night and will feature an eclectic mix of paintings, drawings, statues, pottery and ceramics from 10 awardwinning artists.

The event is in its 15th year.

Featured artists include Goomburra’s Michael Pospischil, Stanthorpe’s Elspeth Cameron and Tenterfield’s Linda Nye. Tenterfield’s Michael Pieper is showing a collection of timber furniture, mirrors and numerous other works, while Maggie Brockie’s quirky clay animal sculptures will be hung among the mill’s memorabilia.

Ms Brockie from Ballandean, who helps organise the event, said all works displayed by artists were for sale.

The exhibition is on at the Ballandean Case and and Timber Mill, Curr Road, Ballandean.

It is open from 7pm to 9pm

THE man behind an annual heavy horse day that has thrilled crowds for 15 years and attracted tourists to the region may be hanging up the harness.

Mick Bradford’s Heavy Horse Demonstration day hosted at his Yangan property has given thousands the chance to step back in time with working displays of horse-drawn equipment used in the 1800s and 1900s.

The much-loved event on the small town’s calendar is on this Sunday and brings tourists from as far away as Brisbane and the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, with all proceeds donated to RACQ CareFlight. The day has helped raise more than $100,000 for charity over the past 14 years.

But Mr Bradford said it might soon be time for him to take a step back from the event that took months of organisation.

He said his health would determine how involved he was in next year’s event. “I am in my eighties now and the horse day requires a lot of preparation, so I might not be up to it next year,� said Mr Bradford, who grew up in the area. “I hope I will be, but I’m not sure.�

Southern Free Times visited Mr Bradford’s farm this week which was a hive of activity with horses being shod and harness and machinery rolled out for the event.

Mr Bradford said he has kept draught horses for as long as he can remember, owning an AIS stud for several years before dedicating his time to the Heavy Horse Demonstration day.

Wood to warm for winter WARWICK Mower Centre is gearing up for winter, running a basic chainsaw safety and maintenance course next month.

Murray and Cheryl Sondergeld have owned and operated Warwick Mower Centre for 34 years but over the past couple of years their son Matthew has taken over the day to day running. Warwick Mower Centre has always proudly sold the Stihl product in those 34 years.

And both Stihl and the team at Warwick Mower Centre take the business of keeping you warm this winter very seriously - which is why Matthew has decided to run the course.

The whole team not only sells a range of chainsaws (one for every need) but are keen to pass on their expertise to help you with general maintenance and safety.

Customers’ safety is always their number one priority, so Matthew will be running the basic chainsaw sharpening and maintenance course.

There is a vast variety of sharpening and safety equipment and it would be a great opportunity to try before you buy.

Tipsters calls are wide of the mark

By CASEY O’CONNOR WHEN the NRL pencilled in a full round of representative football, they could not have anticipated that tipsters would be in much need of a break. Tipsters everywhere are throwing their hands in the air in despair and reaching for the comfort of a soothing ale or a quiet cup of tea and a lie down after last weekend’s results.

The form guide has gone out the window and I am seriously considering resorting to a blindfold and pin. Anyone who nominated a perfect round last week, please contact me with this week’s lotto numbers.

Concerns about the number of games scheduled for Anzac Day were dispelled as fans, players and clubs paid emotional tribute to our Anzacs and those still serving before we were treated to some extraordinary football. This week that quality continues in the representative arena when the Kangaroos and Kiwis go head to head in the Anzac Test on Friday night. The Jillaroos and Kiwi Ferns play the curtain-raiser at Suncorp.

On Saturday at CBUS stadium, in the battle of the South Pacific, Fiji take on PNG Kumuls and Samoa will play Fiji. The curtain-raiser to these games is the clash of the Junior Kangaroos and Junior Kiwis. The weekend of rep football wraps up on Sunday with the annual- Country Origin vs City Origin in Wagga Wagga.

A great weekend of football ahead, and if your preferred tipping competition covers all these games you are in for a tough task. Killarney’s favourite daughter Stephanie Hancock captains the Australian Jillaroos in their clash against the Kiwi Ferns.

Make no mistake this is no powder puff stuff.

There is a fierce rivalry between these two sides who play an outstanding brand of football with no quarter given and none expected. The Jillaroos I think can turn the tables on their loss in the Nines in February.

The Kangaroos have an outstanding record against the Kiwis in one-off Test matches, but this game is shaping as a blockbuster. The Test takes on added urgency as the Kangaroos try to avoid a hat-trick of losses against New Zealand for the first time in 63 years.

No real surprises when the Australian team was announced and the debutantes have more than earned their call up to the green and gold jersey.

Will Chambers, Josh Dugan and Trent Merrin have each experienced State of Origin, however, all three agree that selection for the Australian side is the pinnacle of their career.

Coach Tim Sheens has a mix of youth and experience to work with. The only major injury concern is the fitness of Billy Slater who is working to overcome a shoulder injury and is expected to make an early call on his fitness.

Kiwi coach Stephen Kearney and his selectors named an 18-man squad. The New Zealand team is dripping with young talent.

The Kiwis will rely on the bulk of last year’s Four Nations winning side and welcome back Ben Matulino, Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, and Sam Moa to the international fold.

I am hoping I do not put a hex on the Kangaroos by tipping them in a close encounter worthy of an Anzac Day clash.

Saturday the action moves to the Gold Coast.

The Junior Kangaroos and Junior Kiwis to open the Pacific challenge triple header.

Both sides are brimming with talent some already on display in the NRL. In a close game perhaps the young Kangaroos by a nose.

Expect some fierce battles as the powerhouses of the Pacific go head to head. The Kumulus get their chance to shine against Fiji Bati side. The Kumulus are performing well at Qld State League level could cause an upset.

The wealth of talent available in the Pacific region will certainly be highlighted when Samoa and Tonga go head to head. Samoa go into this game slight favourites after their success in the Four Nations last year. Should be a great spectacle at CBus stadium.

Fire loss still burns The

LIKE so many others across the Southern Downs, I woke Sunday morning to the devastating news of the fire in Warwick which claimed the life of Wilf Brown and left his family homeless.

It is a tragedy beyond belief and the entire sporting community and community at large will be mourning the passing of one of the icons of the Warwick cricketing community.

Wilf Brown was an interesting bloke. I was fortunate to umpire many games with him and shared many a chat about his interesting career as both a player and umpire.

Wilf was an outstanding opening batsman, playing two games for Queensland in that role.

As Michael Bourke said after the tragedy, he was perhaps the best batsman to come out of the district.

He became a regular representing Queensland Country. When he gave up playing, Wilf took up umpiring. For many years, he was curator and groundsman at Warwick Cricket headquarters, Slade Oval and also did more than his share of time as an administrator. Despite his years, Wilf was still an active umpire last season ready to help out when called upon.

It is wonderful to see that the community has rallied behind the Brown family, setting up an appeal after they were left with so little.

Let’s hope the entire community support the appeal in the way that Wilf and his family have supported their community over the years.

I would like to offer my condolences to Wilf’s widow Leonore and daughter Jane.

Warwick cricket has lost one of the true champions of their game and the community has lost one of its true stalwarts.

Casey SUMMIT PAIR AT HOME IN ICY CONDITIONS SUMMIT bowlers Paul Zamprogno and Quinton Stanley were right at home in the icy and windy conditions in the final of the Glen Innes pairs Carnival last weekend.

The pair prevailed in conditions to take out the major prize at the carnival.

They were among a group from the Summit Club that hit the road last weekend for the Glen Innes Pairs carnival.

The testing conditions had many players lured into the warmth of the clubhouse for food and shelter and the hospitality of the host club before heading back to the icy greens.

Zamprogno and Stanley however shook off the conditions and some fierce opposition to come away with the title, the trophy and fair bragging rights.

While the group was in Glen Innes, there was a hotly contested social game of fours at home base on Saturday.

The home greens were once again presented in pristine condition and club members have volunteer greenkeepers Zel, Ray, Dale and Phil to thank for the meticulous preparation of the greens each week.

A reminder to all players that nominations for the Summit A Grade Singles championships close this Friday 1 May. The club champion will go on to represent the club at the subsequent Champion of Champions event.

Those players planning on travelling to Evans Heads in July are also reminded that the deadline for your deposit is Saturday.

Members and guests are invited to the club’s social bowls this Saturday commencing at 1pm.

FAMILY FORM THE win of father/ daughter team Rob and Hannah Reeves in the Stanthorpe Golf Club end of month 4BBB Stableford should come as no surprise. Rob has been in good touch in recent weeks and Hannah is fast becoming one of the most consistent players in the Stanthorpe club. The pair returned a score of 47 points and was a model of consistency on Saturday, recording only one hole with one point. Hannah finished the round two over par, 75, off the stick and also picked up the ladies pin at 3/12 and the pro-pin at 1/10.

Only one point behind team Reeves was the team of Kev Rowling and Keith Green who were left to rue their costly performance on the par three third where they recorded one point.

Eric McLellan collected the balls for the pin at 3/12 and Keith Green held the pin at 17. Len Leigh had success at 5/14 and Richard Reardon at 9/18.

Christine Welstead took the honours for the ladies approach at 17 and the run down went to scores of 45 and better. The enjoyable round was sponsored by Darrel Boekholt.

As it is the first weekend of May, there will be a single stroke competition played for the monthly medal. Saturday is also the first round of club championships. There will be plenty to play for over the coming four rounds of the championships with gross and nett events in several divisions.

Golfers must play over the next four weeks to be deemed eligible. This week’s sponsor is Michael Lane.

PENNANTS NEWS THE Stanthorpe Pennants team had another resounding win last Sunday. The team notched up a five /zip win at Allora. This week, the Stanthorpe group has the bye as the club hosts the next round of the competition and teams from Warwick, Allora, Clifton and Pittsworth hit the fairways and greens on Sunday morning.

The Warwick Golf Club hosted Pittsworth last weekend in Division Three and had a 5 1/2 to 1 1/2 win. The Division four group played Pittsworth at Allora and squared. Warwick Juniors played Dalby at Middle Ridge and won three and two.

TICKET RELEASE FOR WORLD CUP MORE tickets were released for sale for the

Rugby World Cup 2015 last Wednesday. An additional 25,000 seats went on sale for 12 matches featuring Australia, Samoa, Scotland and South Africa. Fiji and the hosts England get the World Cup underway on 18 September at Twickenham Stadium. The tournament culminates in the final also at Twickenham Stadium on 31 October. A ticket to that game will set you back a mere (Aus) $2319.94. (That information should not be available to those people setting the prices for future State of Origin games).

A relaxation of the rules surrounding Australian Wallabies currently contracted to play overseas looks likely to see the return of versatile playmaker Matt Giteau. The return of Giteau (who is currently playing for Toulon) to the Wallaby fold would bolster the Wallabies chances but make life considerably harder for England and Wales who share Pool A with Australia.

There are concerns in the host nation that England could face the very real prospect of elimination in the knockout stage.

ANZAC TRIBUTE SHOOT POPULAR THE Inglewood SSAA paid their Anzac Day respects in their own unique and traditional manner last weekend when they hosted the second round of their popular Anzac Tribute shoot.

Twenty-one shooters competed in last Sunday’s round. Winner of the overall competition by a long shot was Rob McKenzie. In second place was Gary Belen with Paul Drier rounding out the placings.

The competition included several disciplines.

Tim McCarthy was successful in the Individual Pistol Event. He outscored overall winner Rob McKenzie and Crispin Kearney in this event.

Successful in the redoubt were Wayne Duffy, Peter Russell, Brianna Bull, Paul Dreier, Adian Kearney who defeated runners-up D. J. Mclean, Rob McKenzie, John Mills, and Quentin Chapman and in third place Crispin Kearney, Gary Belen.

Rob McKenzie was shooting with great consistency, taking out the Walkup ahead of Quentin Chapman, Gary Belen, Paul Dreier; Peter Solomon finished in third place.

WINNER OF THE JUNIOR SECTION WAS BRIANNA BULL THE Anzac Tribute shoot was once again a well supported and successful event for the Inglewood

Association. This Sunday the club hosts members of the Texas Pony Club who are in training for their Tetrathlon event.

Pony Club Tetrathlon is a challenging competition where participants need a sound knowledge of practical horsemanship and general athletic ability. The competition includes four disciplines: running, riding, swimming and shooting.

Clays were scheduled this weekend but look likely to be pigeonholed this weekend because of private shoots replaced by a free for all.

REEVES REEVES AND MORE REEVES CONDITIONS were a little on the evil side for golfers who braved the chill and wind to play Sporters in Stanthorpe last Sunday morning.

The conditions proved no obstacle to team Reeves, Hannah and her father Rob. Hannah teamed with her father for a win on Saturday and followed up the good form with a Sporters win on Sunday. In the process, she relegated her father to the runner’s-up spot.

The in-form youngster also had the Best Gross score for the round while Rob’s consistent recent form saw him collect the Pin shot at the third and the Pro Pin. With the Reeves’ taking home most of the goodies on offer, Keith Allen and Kev Schultz were fortunate to escape with a meat tray each.

Sporters are reminded that tee off this Sunday is scheduled for 11.30am to noon to accommodate visiting Pennants teams.

The Maureen Bates Memorial Day (a nine hole two ball Ambrose event is just around the corner (10 May). There is still time to get a group together for this popular day on the Stanthorpe golfing calendar.

RUMBLERS COME FROM EVERYWHERE RUMBLERS were out in force last Friday, and even joined by an overseas invader. RRR was won by newcomer/old comer Ross Kingston with 20 points. Kingston finished ahead of Greg Wallace (19) who filled the runners-up spot, edging out his playing partner Alan Matthews who also finished with a score of 19.

Doug Wilson won a ball in the run down and Pins went to Canadian visitor Ian Payne (11), (proof they will come from anywhere for the Red Rooster Rumble) and runner-up Greg Wallace collected the pin at 13.

It was left to the A Grade side to continue that winning feeling, and the boys had to do it the hard way.

Trailing 12-6 at half time, the Tigers dug deep in the second half. In only the second round the season, the Tigers worked well for each other and in a tough and very physical battle outgunned the

League Park, and although it is only early stages in the competition the Tigers and their supporters will be pleased to be sitting alone at the top of the table.

Dave Stewart and Murray Hovey led supporters, players and officials in a special tribute to the Anzac Day occasion.

BRL PLAYERS SET FOR REP DUTY THIS week attention turns to the Representative arena with players selected from the Border League sides heading to Roma to play in the South West Country side in this weekend’s big 47th battalion Carnival in Roma. The trip to Roma will be a welcome change for our local players who in recent years have had to travel much farther afield for this carnival. The weekend event in Roma will also mark the centenary celebration of football in that district.

Seven BRL players were selected in what is a strong South West country side. They will be hoping to again surprise some of their more fancied counterparts. BRL fixtures resume on 9 May. Cowboys returned to form last weekend posting wins in all three grades when they took on Souths at Fr Ranger Oval.

The A grade game was played between the Reserve grade and Under 18 games and the change of format was well received by patrons and players.

The 21-18 win by the A Grade was the win the team needed to get their season back on track after a successful run in the pre-season trials.

Round six began well for the Cowboys with a good win in the Reserve Grade over Valleys (4822) and they finished the round off with another good win in the Under 18 game (48-10).

In other games, Wattles proved too strong for Dalby in their A Grade clash. The premiers added another win to their tally downing Dalby 48-22.

Wattles Reserve Grade and Under 18s both suffered losses, however their C Grade side, Millmerran, posted a big 66-4 win over their opponents.

Scores in the Reserve Grade game were 24-14 Dalby and 52-22 in Dalby’s favour in the Under 18 game.

There are no TRL fixtures this weekend due to the 47th Battalion Carnival in Roma.

SAUNDERS WINS ANZAC DAY COMPETITION IT WAS a solemn occasion on Saturday for the Sporters Club’s Single Stableford competition with the Anzac Centenary commemoration at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts. The event sponsored by B and K Motors was won by Jamie Saunders with a score of 37 points on a countback from runner-up Jesse Harris and Jay Roberts (35). In the run down were Buddy Hicks, and Don Warrener (35), Phil Economidis, Stuart Wade, and Trent Watts (34). Pins went to Brendon Jones (7), Rodney Macdonald (11), Trevor King (13), and Shane McKenzie (16).

The Monthly Medal seems to roll around quicker each month and on Saturday the May monthly medal will be sponsored by Warwick Real Estate.

Sunday is the Sporters Shield and Rose Bowl, a four ball best ball Stableford event. Timesheets for all events are in the pro shop. Phone 4661 3664.

BUSY WEEK FOR MALLETERS ONLY a small group rolled up for Association Croquet last week in Stanthorpe. Three games of singles were conducted. Grace Howard played well to force a 23-all draw with Pat Schnoor.

Margaret Dickenson had a 26-14 win over Joy Newman. In this game, Joy had a break of four and Margaret a break of five. Margaret began her game in usual fashion slowly away, but apparently it is amazing what a cup of coffee can do for the latter part of your game. She came home with a wet sail to nail the win.

Carol Verwey scored 26 with two breaks of two, to pick up a win over Heather Widderick 18.

HOOP RUNNERS GOLF CROQUET NUMBERS were also down at Hoop Runners and two games of triples were played. The final score in the first game was 13 - 11 and in the second game 13 - 9.

The first game was a cracker. Liz Ellway was the star of show as she executed some really good shots. She shot three hoops in a row as well as a “hoop in one”. Three others players, Elaine Brown, Shirley Page and Shirley Evans scored “hoops in one” during the games.

In the second game, Dianne Wren excelled, scoring several hoops in a row, including the winning one. The week wrapped up with a visit from Toowoomba Gateballers on Friday. Some of the Toowoomba contingent teamed up with Stanthorpe players to help them gain more experience. The court had been re-marked to allow two games to be played simultaneously. Stanthorpe players enjoyed the opportunity to play with the Toowoomba group, which included several players who competed in the 2014 World Championships in Japan, and develop new tactics and improve their overall play.

BIG DAY IN TIGER TERRITORY THE Tenterfield Tigers backed up the form they showed when they beat premiers Killarney in round one of the BRL on Saturday. The Tigers came up trumps at Rugby League Park with wins in all three grades against the Stanthorpe.

The Under 18 nine a side game got things off to a flyer for the Tigers when they nailed a solid 22-6 win.

In the Ladies League Tag, the Tenterfield girls continued their domination of the competition with a 14-6 win over the Gremlinettes. The Tenterfield girls have managed to keep their unbeaten record intact despite marked improvement in the other teams in the League Tag. This was a very close game and showed the Tenterfield girls are a solid unit who can step things up a notch when needed.
