OR this Anzac Centenary souvenir edition of the Mail, our editorial team has compiled an invaluable array of feature stories and historical material.

We’ve sourced local stories, local experiences, local photographic images and many heartwrenching local facts.

Overall, our aim for this edition is to embolden the Anzac spirit, to ensure the many stories of courage and sacrifice live on in the Yarra Ranges.

The Mail wants future generations to be speaking about Diggers such as George Ingram, this region’s only Victoria Cross recipient.

We want our schoolchildren to know the first shot in World War I was ordered by Charles Morris, who later lived in Montrose.

Also, we want them to be knowledgeable about stories of sacrifice and courage, such as Fred Cullen from Cockatoo, who fought alongside his four brave brothers in World War I. Or Reginald Hubbard from Steels Creek, who served in World War I with five members of his family; with only three returning home.

A World War I service medal has been unearthed on a property in Olinda, and the Running Rabbits Military Museum is searching for the soldier’s descendants.

The Mail talks to the owners of a Sassafras house, which used to be home to the Little Digger, Prime Minister William ‘Billy’ Hughes, who led the country during the end of the Great War.

Deep connection to the Anzacs From my

This infamous shot was fired from Point Nepean at an escaping German vessel and really highlights the deeply ingrained connection this area has with the formative years of the Anzac spirit.

The Yarra Ranges is draped in incredible stories of courage, hardship and persistence.

It must be remembered that 100 years ago, not many could have pre-

dicted the atrocities that lay ahead for our country and our soldiers.

Most of these soldiers had never been outside of their home country before, let alone fought in battle. Over the course of that war, 420,000 Australians enlisted and earned the Anzac moniker, while more than 8000 Australians died at Gallipoli from a total of 60,000 Australian fatalities. 160,000 were injured.

Anzac Day is a time to remember and reflect on the service and sacrifice of Yarra Valley locals and an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the memory of those who served our nation.

According to the museum, the dirt on the flag is from the battlefields of France, Belgium and Germany, where

the unit was stationed at various periods during their history.

Mr Garland said the public was welcome to come and view this important

piece of Australian military history.

CENTURY-OLD flag that is an integral part of military history will now endure, due to a recent conservation effort.

After being at risk of succumbing to father time, the flag - a Union Jack which was used at the time - has been conserved and framed through a grant secured from the Victorian Veterans Council.

The project also included the flag’s history being engraved in a bronze-coloured plaque, which has been attached to the frame.

The flag now sits proudly at the Running Rabbits Military Museum, which is located at the Upwey-Belgrave RSL sub-branch.

Museum volunteer, Phil Garland, said it was a fantastic result the item would now live on for future generations to enjoy.

“It’s a particularly significant item for our collection,” he said.

“To be honest, I’m not sure how it survived this long.

“It’s been here longer than me and no-one is really sure how we got it.”

The flag is linked to the No.3 Casualty Clearing Station, so it would’ve been draped over the burial caskets of troops who passed away while in the care of this unit.

The unit was initially stationed in the Somme Valley in 1916 and later moved to Bullecourt, Ypres and many battles in Flanders.

A flood of tributes T

HE Anzac Walk opening at Emerald last month was flooded with many tributes to those who sacrificed so much.

Along with the hype surrounding the visit from Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove, the incredibly moving Walk was littered with subtle homages, such as plaques and flags, war-era costumes and even the recently erected statue of the ‘Unnamed Soldier’.

But not of least importance was the symbolic homecoming of 32 soldiers from the district, who had died in the war and failed to return to their families.

To pay respects, 32 people dressed in period costume and travelled into Emerald in Puffing Billy, with their exit from the famous steam train symbolising the soldiers finally returning home.

When stepping from the train, the honoured soldiers were greeted by their descendants, as well as thousands of enthusiastic onlookers.

Among those honoured was Fred Cullen, a Cockatoo local who was just 28 years old when he was killed in action, and who was one of four brave brothers who fought side by side in World War I. At the opening was a huge contingent from the Cullen clan, including Ron, Brian, Jan and Bernie Cullen, and Dianne Young.

And their presence and enthusiasm would’ve done the brothers proud.

Descendant Ron Cullen said it would have been incredibly difficult on the family and community when the brothers headed off overseas.

“For a family on the farm, their absence would have been hard-going,” he said.

“I can imagine it would’ve taken the guts out of their business, which was a timber mill and tree-cutting.”

Originally, the Cullen family settled in Cockatoo in 1903, with a parcel of land outside the present site of the Cockatoo Primary School.

Not even a decade later, four brothers signed up to serve their country.

This was Fred, Arthur, Bill and the youngest, Alfred.

“Alfred was just 16 at the time,” Ron said.

“When great-grandfather wrote to the War Minister, he was sent home.”

However, Alfred later re-enlisted in July of 1917 under a different name.

Fred, Arthur and Bill were part of the 14th Battalion and landed at Gallipoli on the afternoon of 25 April, 1915.

Arthur was wounded within a week, Frederick within two weeks and William was also injured.

“They were all wounded at Gallipoli, but they eventually finished up in France,” Ron said.

“Fred was later killed at Ypres in Belgium.

whom Ron remembers clearly.

“We used to come up to Cockatoo as kids and muck around at grandfather’s sawmill,” Ron said.

“We also caught Puffing Billy when it was an operating train.

“I’ve got fond memories of life up

here, there are many Cullens but it all comes back to Cockatoo.”

Ron admitted events such as this were an emotional time for the family, but ones which were necessary to keep their spirit alive, as well as the story of their sacrifice for their country.

Medal find one in a million

OSS McConchie was recently thrilled to discover an old, tarnished Victory Medal from World War I when he was digging in his garden at Olinda.

But what he dug up at his property was more than just a medal; it is a story that should be part of the history of the Dandenong Ranges.

The property where the medal was discovered had once been a guesthouse, but unfortunately it burnt down in the early 1900s.

The once shiny golden medal would have hung from a colourful ribbon, which unfortunately had either rotted off or been burned.

Around the edge of the medal, a faded name surrounded by initials is etched around the edge: ‘#4122 Pte. J. Taylor, 4th L.H.R. A.I.F’, which stands for ‘Light Horse Regiment, Australian Imperial Force’.

Aenone McRae-Clift, researcher at the Running Rabbits Military Museum in Upwey, provided some information on John Taylor, owner of the dug-up medal.

John was born in early 1896 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

His family immigrated to Australia after John’s mother, Janet, became a widow.

Janet lived in the heart of Sassafras from 1903 to 1921, forming a close relationship with the hills, before moving to Preston.

On 19 July, 1915, John was enlisted in the 4th Light Horse Regiment, 11th Reinforcement.

The Light Horse Regiment was a mounted infantry troop of the Australian Army, which was established in 1914.

Mounted infantry implies the soldiers rode horses into battle instead of marching. For a few years, John served overseas in Egypt, where the 4th Light Horse Regiment fought against the Ottoman Empire, before returning home safely in June 1919.

His name can be found on the electoral rolls for Victoria, stating he lived in Sassafras from 1924 to 1938 as a butcher, before becoming a motor proprietor in 1942.

John moved into Everest Crescent, Olinda during 1949, which was where Ross McConchie unearthed the old Victory Medal.

As well as the Victory Medal, John also received the 1914-’15 Star and the British War Medal.

The three medals awarded to him were the usual service medals awarded to all men who served during WWI. Undoubtedly, John helped protect our country and was an incredible soldier during the war, before becoming a respectful member of the Sassafras and Olinda community.

John’s death was difficult to interpret due to a loss of records during that time.

He was shown living in Olinda in 1949, though he was not included on the 1958 electoral roll, suggesting he must have passed during those dates.

Aenone did some research on men who had passed away in Victoria under the name ‘John Taylor,’ only one man seemed to fit the description, implying he passed in 1952.

After some further research, Aenone suggested John’s father died in the UK before Janet and young John immigrated to Australia.

John was never married or had children, meaning there was no-one to give any family details about his birth certificate.

This means when the medal was handed in to the RSL, there were no known relatives to hand it on to.

The medal is kept in the Running Rabbits Military Museum, with John’s service, record dates and details alongside.

If anybody proved they were related to John Taylor and chose to come forward, providing they could show evidence of some sort, the medal would be handed on to them for safekeeping.

In the meantime, the medal will be kept safely at the Running Rabbits Military Museum and looked after by the many hard-working volunteers.

The museum is open on Thursdays from 10am-noon, as well as Sundays from 10am to 2pm.

‘Little Digger’ in Sassafras

Variously described as a “pestiferous varmint” and as being too deaf to listen to reason, too loud to ignore and too small to hit, he led the country from 1915 to 1923.

To get away from the pressures he retreated to his Sassafras home Ty Coed, from his native Welsh meaning The House By The Wood.

It was while in Sassafras that he battled twice to introduce conscription and brought Australia onto the world stage, most famously when he fought for his notorious concessions in the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I. Some historians say his demands for punitive reparations against Germany sowed the seeds of the next global conflict.

“We just love the house,” said Catherine Court, who bought the property with her family in 2004.

“My husband and I grew up in old houses and I love the fact that it’s got character and a history.

That’s what drew us to it.

“I love that there’s a few creaks and bumps in the night.

“It adds to the interest of where we’re living.“ Hughes made his home in Kew after he married his second wife Mary in 1911 and their beloved daughter Helen was born when he became prime minister at the age of 52.

It is thought he built the Panteg Road weekender about that time.

Then the Commonwealth Government sat in the current State Parliament, so Sassafras was a welcome retreat from the cut-throat politics of the day, even if it was Hughes who was often wielding the blade.

He was also a keen golfer at the Emerald Country Club, fought bushfires with the locals and rode the wooded gullies on horseback.

In 1920 the Prince of Wales, later the abdicated Edward VIII, came to the hills as part of his official tour to thank Australians for their contribution to the war.

On one of his official engagements he planted an acacia tree, which was brought back from Jerusalem by a returned soldier, at the end of the nearby fledgling Avenue of Honour.

The Prince of Wales greeted schoolchildren and gave them a signed letter as a keepsake.

But worn out by the enthusiastic reception of the Australian crowds, he delayed the next leg of his tour to Sydney and took a week-long holiday as a guest of the Hughes family.

Using horses from the now disused and builtover stables under the house, the prince and Hughes made several well reported rides through the bush, one to Olinda, and stopped for billy tea along the way.

Some people rode with the prince, while others remembered the royal party passing their front gate.

ter on 9 February 1923 and two weeks later was photographed on the home’s front verandah steps with the then seven-year-old Helen.

One of the newspapers which published the photograph was the now defunct Broken Hill Barrier Miner which captioned it “Mr Hughes refuses to budge from his home at Sassafras”, probably in reference to his political demise.

Hughes doted on his daughter after having become estranged from the children of his first marriage.

But tragedy was to befall Hughes when it is thought that Helen fell pregnant while still single

and died in London during a caesarean birth in 1937 at the age of 21.

The boy survived only to be disowned by the elder statesman and as of 2004 was living in Sydney under a different name.

Ms Court, who owns the nearby Courtyard furniture shop, said the rear of the house has been extensively extended since it was owned by Hughes.

“It would have been a lot smaller in his day.

“The front of the house must be similar to how it used to be but it’s hard to tell how much of the rest is original.

“Possibly the living area is the same and I think the children’s bedrooms are verandah areas that were enclosed.“ In June 1941 Hughes reluctantly sold the fiveacre property to Mrs E.E. Dartnell for £1,090.

“It was an abode of peace and loveliness,” Hughes said at the time.

“I have always thought this part of the Dandenongs to be one of the world’s most beautiful spots.

“I spent some happy days there, and there is woven about it many sentimental and historic ties.”

Anzac Day is the day we remember all Australians who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Defined by the human qualities of courage, mateship and resilience, this year we remember every Australian, male and female who has given so much to preserve our freedom and values.

A true leader of men

This Anzac Day I hope we all take time to reflect on the service and sacrifice of so many brave Australians.

2015 marks 100 years since the Gallipoli landings, when our nation’s young men and women were called upon to serve their country. Their legacy has helped shape our national identity and should never be forgotten.

representative of more than the individual, but of all those who were there, and what they did.

“After that they can then go out and feel that they are representing the people who didn’t come back.”

In 1934 he became one of the original Shrine Guards, then went on to serve in WWII. In 1956 he attended the Victoria Cross Centenary and while in Europe placed soil from Seville on the graves of his brothers.

“It was traumatic; he was responsible for the death of more than 40 men on that day, hand to hand combat, and that’s going to haunt anyone.

“A lot of his good friends were killed on that day, and in the lead-up to that his two brothers had been killed.”

Mr McAleer says George Ingram returned to a hero’s welcome at Seville, but suffered both mentally and physically right up to his death as a result of the injury and trauma of war. He said it took him a long time to come to terms with the medal that represented all that.

“It (the VC) is very much about the individual, and they don’t want it to be about them,” he said.

T MAY seem cliched, but Captain George Ingram proved himself to be a leader of men.

There are plenty of stories of leaders leading from behind on the battlefields of WWI, but history records that Yarra Ranges’ only WWI Victoria Cross recipient, never asked his men to do anything he wasn’t prepared to do himself.

He was six when the family moved to Seville, where his father was a mail contractor and orchardist.

An older brother, Ronald, and younger brother, Alex, would be killed in the war. He also lost a sister when she was just six.

A troubled teenager, he left school at 14 and after a scrape with the law, was sent to live in Prahran where he got an apprenticeship as a carpenter.

At the same time, he joined the militia.

Those formative years underpinned a life which by today’s standards, or perhaps the standards of any era, would rate as heroic.

That’s reflected in Mount Evelyn military historian, Anthony McAleer’s book ‘Great Courage and Initiative’ - The Heroic Life of George Ingram VC, MM. The biography, launched in March, was sparked by a desire, and need, to tell the story.

“Australians, although we’re a very egalitarian society, always hold our VC recipients on a pedestal,” Mr McAleer said.

“I wanted to do the book to create the interest, but the real story is what those fellows had to go through on the Western Front and how they suffered because of their service after the war,” he said.

He was awarded the Military Medal for his role during the first action on the front line at Bapaume. Over the next two years, Mr McAleer says, he experienced all the horror and heroism of the Western Front.

He survived the killing grounds of Bullecourt, Ypres, Flanders, Passchendaele, Villers Bretonneux and Mont St Quentin.

It was his actions on 5 October, 1918, at Montbrehain, the AIF’s last battle of the war, that led to him earning the highest award for gallantry in battle.

A detailed description of the battle is covered in Wikipedia ‘George Ingram’, and it is compelling reading.

When the battalion came under heavy fire, Ingram rushed an enemy post and captured nine machine-guns, killing 42 of the enemy in the process.

Several more times throughout the day he displayed great courage, capturing posts and many more prisoners.

He was decorated with his Victoria Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace on 25 February, 1919, before returning to Australia where he was discharged in June.

Mr McAleer covers the after story, as much as in the heroic action on the battlefield.

“For the rest of his life, Ingram never spoke about how he won the VC,” he said.

Gallipoli to take the lead

OUNT Evelyn’s Gallipoli soldier descendants will be front and centre on Anzac Day, with the RSL announcing the relatives of Diggers will head up the annual march for the first time.

Mount Evelyn RSL secretary Anthony McAleer told the Mail that residents whose family members served in the Gallipoli campaign in World War I would be leading the Anzac Day march on Saturday 25 April.

The march will follow the town’s dawn service, which will begin at the war memorial on the corner of Wray Crescent and Birmingham Road at 5.45am.

Mr McAleer said having the relatives of the soldiers at the front of the march was one of the ways the RSL would pay respect to the World War I Diggers to mark the Anzac Centenary.

“Usually, our veterans and ex-service personnel are at the front of the march,” he said.

“This year, the Mount Evelyn RSL wanted to recognise the service of those who had been at Gallipoli - we think the best way to do that would be to invite their family members.

carry a photo of them.”

Grandparents, grandkids, residents young and old are expected to take part in the event, which Mr McAleer said

had received a strong response from the community.

“We put the word out there, and we’ve had a great response so far

- there are quite a lot of people out there,” he said.

“We think it’ll be quite special.”

Changing the head of the parade is just one modification to this year’s ceremony - Mount Evelyn resident Alexander Borg will be singing a song he wrote to mark the occasion.

Following the service, where the catafalque party from the 22nd Engineer Regiment from East Ringwood will stand guard at the memorial, the march will lead residents to the RSL clubrooms on 49 Birmingham Road for a free community breakfast.

“The RSL feels that this is the one day of the year where all of Mount Evelyn’s community gets together - all the various groups in our community are all represented at the service,” Mr McAleer said.

“We like to organise a community breakfast where everybody can get together in friendship and fellowship and get together as a community.”

The RSL will also be running games of the traditional game, two-up, at the York on Lilydale from 1pm, with a sausage sizzle, raffles and a remembrance service.

Soldier lost his leg, but retained his spirit

HOSE words, which make up part of the Anzac tribute, The Ode, ring especially true for Mount Evelyn’s Margaret Paynter, whose grandfather fought for his country in World War I. Thomas James Scully served in France during the war, serving with the Second Pioneers in 1916 until he lost a leg in battle.

Though Scully was from further afield than the Yarra Ranges, Ms Paynter attends her town’s dawn service each year for Anzac Day, and said the moment reminded her of her grandfather’s fight and sacrifice.

The Ode mentions remembrance of fallen Diggers at the rise and fall of the sun, and Ms Paynter said the atmosphere during the service reminded her of that connection between soldiers and their country.

“I don’t know what it is, but just as it’s becoming light and the man’s reading out the soldiers that have died, the kookaburras start going in the background,” she said.

“It’s very Australian.”

The centenary of Anzac holds extra significance for Ms Paynter, who recently found a number of letters and

cards sent from Scully back home to his wife, her grandmother, Florence, and his family back home.

One letter, from Scully’s Brother Jack, was full of updates from back in Australia and gave an insight into the regular conversations that occurred between soldiers fighting for their country and those they were fighting for.

“My darling Tom,” the letter begins.

“Just a few lines to let you know that I am keeping splendid, hoping you are the same.”

The letter describes an upcoming trip to the beach and visits to church, before Jack signs off with “no more reports, so close with love.”

The letters and postcards were handed down to Ms Paynter by her mother and said they were an invaluable connection between her present-

day family and her ancestors, who fought in the war.

“I think of all the men and women who fought for our country - I think of my grandfather and my uncle,” she said.

Though Scully lost his leg in the war - an injury he rarely talked about - Ms Paynter said he kept his spirits high, opening a florist shop in Auburn called The Limbless Soldier Florist, and living until 22 August, 1969. And so, come rain, hail or shine, Ms Paynter and her family will be gathered among other Mount Evelyn residents on Saturday, 25 April, to pay their respects to those who put their lives on the line for their country.

HILE Their Names are Still Spoken is not a happy performance - that much was given to me as a warning a week before the show by director Evie Housham.

The production opens with a bang - literally, with explosions and gunshots filling the air before a lone soldier, Artie (Greg Hedges) is revealed, sitting in a field of poppies in the afterlife.

Artie, moodily reading the fabled World War I poem In Flanders Fields, is interrupted by his happy-go-lucky friend, Jim (Lachy Castricum), who tries to raise his friend’s spirits (no pun intended) in the aftermath of their lives.

But Artie reveals that Jim died at the beginning of the war while he went on to face the horrors of the battlefield and the sodden morale from witnessing the death of his comrades.

This had led him to question whether the deaths of the Anzacs in WWI was worth it - whether his life and his contribution meant anything at all.

This is the question that While Their Names are Still Spoken, written by Ken Purdham, sets out to answer.

Set simultaneously on the battlefield and back at home in Emerald, the production demonstrates the harsh reality of war for the Diggers and the pain of those they left behind, wondering if their

The audience gets a brief glimpse at Artie and Jim before they head off to war, with their girlfriends, Ruth (Ash Herring) and Mary (Tashi Baiguerra), before seeing how the war takes its toll, emotionally and physically, on everyone involved.

Shop owner, Emma Foxford (Claudia Witts), and Emerald resident, Charles Stapleton (Chris O’Neill), provide support to the two girls, while also grappling with young people from the Emerald community dying in the conflict.

Each cast members’ performance was solid, authentic and passionate, and the production didn’t show the glorious Anzac story we are accustomed to, but the

bitter impact war had on soldiers and their families back home.

While still fighting on the front lines, Artie remarks to Jim, who is watching him from the afterlife, “They give me the order - ‘over you go’. The odds are no better than tossing coins in the air ... my life has become a game of two-up.”

At the same time, it looked into the way the community rebounded from losing its residents to war, and how that community went on to remember those they had lost.

While Their Names are Still Spoken references a saying that people only die when their names are spoken for the last time.

As long as their names are spoken, each year at dawn services across the hills and beyond, then their legacy, both of loss and resil-

ience, continues.

While their Names are Still Spoken’s final productions will be on Friday 24 April and Saturday 25 April, Anzac Day, from 8pm.

The production is performed by the Gemco Players Community Theatre at the Gem Community Arts Centre at 19 Kilvington Drive.

Tickets are $25 for adults, $22 for concession holders, $18 for students or $20 per person in groups of four or more.

Kokoda effort starts at 1000 Steps

OST nights of the week, you can find the Buckingham family among the many walkers and runners scaling the 1000 Steps.

The popular trail was erected as a memorial walk to the Australian soldiers of World War II, who tackled Papua New Guinea’s treacherous Kokoda Track in harsh conditions.

The history of the trail has a more personal meaning to the Buckinghams than to most.

Brothers Shane, Scott, Peter and Gregory, along with Scott’s wife Melinda, will walk the Kokoda Track in June, dedicating their walk to their 93-year-old grandfather, Jim Podmore.

Jim served in the Royal Australian Army Ordnance Corps from 1939-’48, defending Australian shores from attack.

On his return from Darwin, Jim settled in Malvern and started a family. His only child, Carol, had four boys who have been planning their “Knox to Kokoda” walk for many years.

Carol said that Jim was honoured that his grand-

children had dedicated the walk to him.

“I think he’s very proud, and very impressed,” she said.

“They decided this year, being the 100th anniversary of Anzac celebration, would be a good time to do the trip.”

Jim hasn’t had a huge involvement in RSL clubs since he returned from Darwin, and Carol says this had been a way for the family to better understand his sacrifices.

“We have been going to the Boronia RSL for the past few years on Anzac Day, but this one will be particularly special,” she said.

The five will leave on 12 June and will be gone for 10 days.

Like Jim’s post in Darwin, the Australians on the Kokoda Track were also charged with protecting Australian shores.

They fought to protect Port Moresby, a port crucial to the security of Australia.

Had the Japanese taken Port Moresby, they could have launched an attack on Australia from that point.

During the campaign, 625 Australian soldiers were killed and over 1000 injured.

Avenue is fading away S

OME 100 years after Gallipoli, Ferny Creek’s Avenue of Honour to the old soldiers of the Great War has all but faded away.

Planted to remember the men from the Sassafras and Ferny Creek districts who volunteered, and endorsed by a visit from one of history’s most famous royal figures, there is now little left of its founding ideals.

Only a few of the original 103 trees that were planted along Mt Dandenong Tourist Road east from One Tree Hill Road have survived a century of neglect and vandalism and few of the motorists who drive along the avenue’s length would even know it exists.

“We have lost a lot to attrition,” said Phil Garland, president of the Sherbrooke Foothills Historical Society.

And the trees have also suffered from official vandalism, and in particular from the power cables that run along the north side of the road, said Malcolm Johnson from the Mount Dandenong and District Historical Society.

“You can blame the electricity people chopping the life out of them.”

The idea of an avenue to honour those who went to fight in the war came from a public farewell for a volunteer from Sassafras in July 1916.

On 12 August the same year, 60 chestnut trees were planted along both sides of the newly-built stretch of Mount Dandenong Tourist Road from the Sherbrooke Road junction to the north end of Clarkmont Road.

The aim was to plant additional trees as more volunteers signed up and locals soon started referring to the trees and the new road as Anzac Avenue, with official permission to use the name granted a year later.

“They were created by a committee of local citizens who raised the funds and there was a tree planted for each man who enlisted from the area,” Mr Garland said.

Each tree along the avenue was protected by a tree guard to which was attached a numbered copper plate with the name of each man who signed up.

And while it was still full of its original promise the avenue was given a regal boost with the 1920 visit from the then Prince of Wales, later to become the abdicated Edward VIII. On his official visit he planted an acacia tree, which was brought back from Jerusalem by a returned soldier, at the end of the avenue.

However, in a portent of the neglect that was to signal the avenue’s demise, no-one remembered to care for the royal tree and it soon died.

Twenty-one years after the end of the Great War, and with the spectre of the Second World War rising, the stone memorial to the volunteers on the corner of Sherbooke Road and Mount Dandenong Tourist Road was unveiled on 20 May 1939.

Bob Richards, secretary of the Dandenong Ranges RSL, thinks the memorial may have been built by returned Diggers because they saw the need for a more permanent tribute.

The monument, which was refurbished this March, included a brass plaque with the names of the volunteers and their corresponding trees.

It shows that the trees numbered one to 46 were on the east side of the road going north and that tree numbers 47 to 104 were planted on the west side going south. However, the plaque only lists 103 names.

And the avenue’s condition wasn’t helped by a report in The Age in April 1952 telling its readers how easy it was to collect fallen chestnuts along the road.

The next month the paper realised what it had done and reported residents’ disgust with the “wanton destruction” as visitors used sticks and climbed and broken branches in their scramble to collect the nuts.

The avenue’s decline over the years didn’t go unnoticed but little was done to successfully address the problem.

In 2004 the president of the Dandenong Ranges RSL, Lex Gray, then 76, told The Age that members had tended to the trees in the past but had not done so for decades.

“We try and help but we don’t have the money,” he said.

Mr Garland said that while the avenue shows the signs of its mixed fortunes, there may be hope for it.

“The trees that survived aren’t too bad. Some of the smaller trees may have been replanted to replace ones that had died,” he said.

“Where there are stumps you could stump grind them to replace the ones where we know we have lost them.”

Mr Richards said that the avenue was now commemorated through recent improvements to the Sherbrooke Road memorial, but that the RSL was looking for more official acknowledgement for the avenue.

“We have also written to VicRoads and we want an historic monument sign erected.

“We would also like VicRoads and the council to make awareness of the avenue more prominent

“We don’t have any plans to recreate the avenue of honour because the trees would now be considered exotics and we wouldn’t be allowed to, so we don’t think it would be practical.

“It’s not out of the question. We would need the complete support of the locals and council,” he said.

Inspiration turns delicious THE Sourdough Cafe opened on 9 November, 2012, after extensive renovations of the shed that was previously occupied by The Cog, Bike Cafe.

With a lot of hard work, the Olives transformed a dusty bike shed into Mount Evelyn’s first artisan bakery and biodynamic/organic cafe.

Penny’s vision for the bakery cafe was inspired by her sourdough baking apprenticeship with Les Bartlett.

From Les, she learnt time-honoured bak-

ing methods, the craft of hand mixing doughs, hand-shaping loaves, slow fermentations of sourdough and wood-fired baking.

Les’s sourdough bakery is located in the permaculture village of Crystal Waters in Queensland.

Penny shared the principles of Les’s baking and they are the foundation of the Sourdough Cafe: *Localised food production; *Minimal use of machinery in food production;

*Only use the best, and the most necessary raw ingredients, such as biodynamic stoneground flour, filtered water, unrefined salt; *Local employment, engage anyone who shows a keen interest and share knowledge; *Use no chemicals in and around food production.

Teen killed in car crash

A

NOTHER crash on the Healesville-Kooweerup Road at Yellingbo has taken a young life.

An 18-year old Cockatoo woman was killed when her car ran off the road and hit a tree at around 6.15am on Sunday morning.

The young woman, the sole occupant of the car, died at the scene.

In a parallel incident police have charged a man who drove through the safety barriers on Sunday and hit a CFA volunteer controlling traffic.

Officer in Charge of Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol, Sergeant John Morgan, said the

woman was driving towards Woori Yallock.

He said crash happened after she lost control of the car after coming out of a right hand bend.

“The vehicle has skidded sideways and the driver side has gone into a tree,” he said.

Police were then called on to deal with the car driver who, Sgt Morgan said, had disobeyed police instructions to stop at the crash scene.

“The person failed to stop at the outer cordon when directed by police,” he said.

“He was then directed to stop by a tow truck driver as he approached the inner cordon, but again failed to stop.”

A member of the Cockatoo CFA, First Lieutenant Chris White was then hit as the man continued to drive through.

First Lieutenant White was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

Police investigations into the fatal crash are continuing.

Sgt Morgan said the male driver responsible for hitting the CFA volunteer was remanded in custody with charges pending.

It is the third serious crash at the same location where in March a woman suffered serious head injuries when a car driven by her teenage daughter left the road and hit the same tree.

UNDREDS of gnomes flocked to Upwey on the weekend for a second scrape at bringing a world record to the hills, as part of a No Macca’s-inspired event.

The No McDonald’s in the Dandenong Ranges’ Gnomeageddon 2015 on Sunday 19 April was the second attempt by the group to break the world record for most people dressed as garden gnomes in the one place.

With a target of 479 gnomes needed to break the record, the group fell short of their goal, amassing about 400 gnomes at the Upwey Community Hall by 2pm for the record count.

Last year saw 446 gnomes at the 2014 attempt, and No McDonald’s spokesperson Garry Muratore told the Mail he believed the poor numbers was due to rainy and cold weather through the morning.

Mr Muratore told the Mail that the group wasn’t put out by the failure, but that the event doubled as a community fundraiser.

“We raised quite a lot of money through market stalls, photobooths, silent auctions and raffles,” he said.

“In terms of an event, we feel it was quite successful.”

Mr Murratore said that last year’s fund-raising went to the CFA, but this year's monies

By JAMIE STRUDLEY IT WAS a fantastic turnout of eager athletes for this week’s round of Yarra Ranges Athletics cross-country.

Great to see so many new faces, young and old(er), having a run around the picturesque courses.

Some fantastic performances from our athletes, as a result of the numbers and quality of athletes.

If smiles and laughter are anything to go by, the level of fun was very high as well.

Our senior athletes competed in the opening round of the Athletics Victoria XCR15, the cross country relays at Jells Park.

Thirty athletes, and equally as many supporters, enjoyed near perfect conditions to achieve some very good results.

The highlight of the day was the team win by our Under 14 Girls team of Georgia Laven, Zoe Sibley and Ruby Dixon.

This result continues the dominance of our Under 14 Girls from last year.

Our Men’s team competed in Division 4 after promotion from Division 5 in 2014.

Some exceptional performances saw the team finish second overall, a great performance with so many athletes unavailable.

IT was stableford at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday with the promise of showers, rain and a little bit of good stuff.

As it turns out, there was much more good stuff and the course was in the condition for scoring big numbers.

Cards were shoved through the human computers and it resulted in two members with 42 points so further computations had to be slapped across the numbers.

It emerged that Steve Town (14) having parred the back nine won the day from an unlucky Travis Gerbes (10) on the same score.

B Grade was won, also on a countback, with captain Dean Shannon (17) just getting the nod from Phillip Crossley (20) also on 38 points.

Others to do themselves and their forefathers proud were Ken Hill (16) and Peter Glasscock (14) who both wandered in with 40 points to win a ball each.

Ben Balfour was nearest the pin

on the 4th, Glasscock the 7th, Gerbes the 12th while a greedy Mike Litchfield was nearest on the 13th and also the pro pin 18th.

Gracie Gray ran away with the ladies’ comp when she easily accounted for her nearest rival Josephine Krummenacher by four points.

The last of the 4BBB games were played with Dave Aitken and Mark Starick accounting for Ben Balfour and Dennis Fuller 2/1.

The next round sees Aitken and Starick take on Ken Sumsion and Dean Shannon and in the other semi Broc Reynolds and Peter Clowes face off against Peter Glasscock and John Carvill for the right to play in the final.

On Wednesday, when the Overly Flat Golfers turned up to play the stroke event off the back markers and it was that long hitting Mick Petrie (31) who stole the show with a nett 66 to lead in Sepp Krummenacher (20) on 67 followed by Moss Fuller (24) and Peter Clowes (15) both on 69.

The second half was all Belgrave as Yarra Glen seemed to stop to a walk; Belgrave added another 17 goals to four to turn this game on its head as it finished the day with 12 separate goal kickers and a big 77-point victory. The third quarter did open up a little with both sides scoring three goals, but Woori should have had a bigger lead at the last break as they booted 3.9 to 3.2 for the term. Even though the margin was just 16 points going into the last, Woori did look in control and that’s the way it turned out. Woori booted two goals to one in the last and even though it wasn’t a pretty victory, they’ll still be happy with a 2-0 start to the year, while Mount Evelyn will have to wait at least another week to try and get their first win.
