THE Polocrosse World Cup is no stranger to Morgan Park’s high-class facilities and come April 2019 the park will once again be buzzing with excitement.

After nine months deliberating over a venue to hold the 2019 World Cup, executives at Polocrosse Association of Australia decided on Morgan Park. Warwick Polocrosse Club president Les Fraser is excited to see the World Cup tournament back home.

“Morgan Park is the best polocrosse facility in the world and we are very fortunate to have a world-class facility here in Warwick,” he said.

After hosting the first World Cup event in 2003 and again in 2007, the United Kingdom took the reins in 2011 and this year South Africa is hosting the eight countries.

Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and the United States of America will take to horseback in another four years in polocrosse’s place of birth.

“It’s great news for Warwick, Queensland and the Southern Downs, we are very excited about it,” Mr Fraser said.

“It gives us the chance to highlight what we have here on the Southern Downs - we’ll have 600 to 1000 international visitors come with their teams.

“The biggest change will be that in the first two World Cups there was only two to three teams that were capable of winning - this time I can see at least six teams that have the ability to win,” he said.

Mr Fraser has been to all three World Cups and will be attending the World Cup this year in South Africa.

OVER 80 artists showcased their work at a popular exhibition on Friday evening.

The bi-annual Southern Downs Regional Artist Exhibition 2015 attracted over 180 people who viewed 82 pieces of work from various mediums.

Warwick Art Gallery Director Karina Devine said the event started in 2009 and the quality of work kept getting better.

“We have some artists who are familiar and some who are new, and there is so much variety and a lot of talent,” she said.

“We want to exhibit everyone’s work, so are lucky to have enough entrants to fill the space but not overcrowd it.”

Ms Devine said she was very pleased with the evening.

“We had some lovely catering from gallery volunteers and there were local wines for sale on the night,” she said.

“Everyone had a really good night and a lot of fun socialising.”

Disasters for the young

By LIA SPENCER YOUNG people from Warwick and surrounds get to test their skills in mock situations at this weekend’s Youth Disaster Games.

The Youth Disaster Games and Volunteers Training event will run over two days at the Warwick Showgrounds as part of National Youth Week, with the theme “It Starts with Us.” QFES crews and brigades will join other emergency services to equip local youth with emergency

response skills and knowledge.

About 30 youth, aged up to 25, have signed up for the event and will be able to participate in mock disaster scenarios and take on the roles of emergency service response, under the guidance of professionals.

The first day is theory based, where the participants will be involved in a workshop, learning about planned and spontaneous volunteering, household preparation for disasters and how the community works and responds to disasters.

The second day is Disaster Games day, an outside action event which will include skills and training from SES and RFSQ volunteers and a modified winching activity by auxiliary and full-time firefighters.

Disaster Management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said this was the first time the event would be held, but he hoped it turned into an annual or biennial event.

“We are hoping that everyone has a bit of fun and gets a feel for what Emergency Services do and, in the longer term, we might be able to

plant the seed that these are things they can do in the future,” Mr Saunders said.

“They can be either a paid professional or a volunteer. They might sign up for the SES or fire brigades or the ambulance,” Mr Saunders said.

A DINNER and auction will be held next week to mark the centenary of Gallipoli. A YOUNG man suffering from a tumour received a welcomed boost by a good Samaritan and her Warwick club.

Clare Jeffries, a member of the Warwick Lions Club and owner of Clare’s Hair Together and Treatment decided to step into action after reading a story in the local paper about Angus Bowles, who is suffering from Pallister- Hall syndrome and a benign tumour near his brain.

After contacting his family, Ms Jeffries donated goods for a raffle, sold tickets, and raised $500. The funds were matched by the Warwick Lions Club.

On 1 April, the Lions Club handed a cheque of $1000 to the family which will go towards Angus’ treatment in the United States.

The Lions Club wished to thank everyone who purchased tickets to help fund the important cause.

FAMILIES flocked to Leslie Park on Saturday to enjoy and participate in a variety of activities, browse an array of stalls and enjoy loads of free entertainment.

The first Warwick Uber Markets was the brainchild of Christie Russell, who has been busy planning the monthly event since January.

“I really felt like Warwick needed something that the entire community can do and connect with each other,” she said. “I wanted teenagers to come and engage and have some fun and wanted to have some free children’s activities, because many people are short on money and things can get expensive when you have a few kids.”

Ms Russell said there were about 60 stalls that included everything from plants, fruits and vegetables, to clothes and candles.

There are already 80 stalls signed up for next month’s market, which will include woodfired pizzas and the community disaster relief van.

Ms Russell said she also hoped to have crafts, workshops and competitions with prizes.

“It is a lot of work, but I am very pleased with how it turned out,” she said.

The Warwick Uber Markets is held on the second Saturday of every month from 10am-4pm.

THE same people who promoted intermittent energy (wind and solar) have trumped that with their latest green energy fad - hydrogen fuel.

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe; it fuels the sun and is the third most common element on Earth. But it is so reactive that it is seldom found in its elemental state - it combines strongly with other elements such as oxygen to form water or with carbon to form methane. It is an essential component in all acids, alkalis, hydro-carbons and organic materials.

To extract hydrogen from natural compounds such as water, methane or coal requires very large inputs of energy. Most commonly hydrogen is produced from methane gas using heat and steam, or by electrolysis of water using large quantities of electricity.

Hydrogen can be used to power rockets, cars and engines of all types. However the energy used to produce the hydrogen can never be fully recovered from the energy in the hydrogen. It is thus NOT a source of energy - it is merely a storehouse for energy - a battery.

It is possible to produce hydrogen from water using electricity from nuclear or hydro-carbon fuels, or even intermittent green energy. The hydrogen gas could then be transported to cities as a clean energy source for cars, thus reducing pollution from petrol/diesel vehicles.

But hydrogen is a very dangerous gas.

It has tiny lightweight molecules which have low energy density and are difficult to compress, contain and store. It also forms a very explosive mixture with air. To provide a network of hydrogen car-fuelling stations, or to suggest hydrogen as a domestic gas, is inviting explosive disasters in the suburbs (imagine the Health and Safety regulations!)

Even the impractical electric cars have benefits compared to the hydrogen car.

Electricity is safer and the supply network is easier and essentially in place. Moreover, electric cars do not reduce the oxygen content of city air - every tonne of hydrogen fuel consumes eight tonnes of oxygen to produce

nine tonnes of water vapour. So instead of urban smog, we may get urban fog.

And to suggest that hydrogen can provide base-load power tops all green energy idiocy. Hydrogen is a net-negative energy option.

Also forgotten is that China has been actively preparing for war with someone for decades. Its military budget this year will grow by 10 per cent to a whopping $180 billion; the 21st consecutive year of growth by double digit figures!

Meanwhile politicians gamble our security for their popularity, ignoring facts, and hoping that nothing nasty will happen until other MPs are elected.

Thank God that Indonesia with almost 500,000 personnel in uniform today and another 52 million males aged 16-49 fit for military service takes our foreign aid and ignores us.

Some heroes THE letter by Lou Rowan (SFT, 9 April) spoke for all who are completely overwhelmed by the mind-set of sportsmen and women who are on highly paid entertainers, not kings or queens of television!

Brutality on the field is to this writer as much a crime as is street violence. Too much is made of the very young and gifted before they reach the maturity to show measures of grace.

Hideous works of art adorn those bodies to impress, tattoos outlined in ink which must be harmful to health and stamina are

however, the biggest turn-off of all! Age will eventually cause maturity to judge their foolishness.

Every player must realise whatever sport they choose will eventually sack them, and one would hope that careful savings are made, and fierce reputations forged in preparation for the after sporting decades of reduced incomes. Obscene language becomes a habit, and all forms of life including sport is totally diminished by its use. However, cricket for all its shortcomings, is still a world away from most with its dedicated team structure. As a social member of the Brisbane Lions AFL club, this writer understands the game standards, and is a keen commentator on players’ endeavours.

Weep for Chloe FEW would have heard of the terrible way four-year-old child (Chloe Valentine) was treated by her mother and partner in South Australia. Her ill treatment resulted in the shocking death of this unfortunate child.

Mother and partner were sentenced to four years in prison for the treatment dished out to Chloe that resulted in her death.

The coroner took the unprecedented decision to have his judgment recorded and released to the media. South Australia’s family services organisation came in for savage criticism for turning a blind eye to the abuse, and not removing Chloe from her wretched environment.

Little Chloe is not the first child to have suffered ill-treatment resulting in death.

These incidents are happening far too often and the perpetrators seem to get off with a light sentence. The time has come when authorities need to come down hard on the abusers of young innocent children.

Jesus said: “To those who commit crimes against little children it would be better for them to have a stone hung around their neck and thrown into the sea.”

Man on child sex charges A WARWICK man has been charged with 145 charges relating to child sex offences that allegedly occurred over a period of 13 years.

It will be alleged that the 47-year-old man used a variety of social media sites to offend against 28 child victims between 2002 and 2015.

The man used various usernames to target the children, including ‘Jazz’, ‘Jazzman’ and ‘David Bourne.’

The alleged victims were from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, with police believing there may be other victims from Western Australia.

The 145 charges include five counts of rape, four counts of indecent treatment of children under 16, eight counts of grooming a child under 16 with intent to procure engagement in a sexual act, 20 counts of involving

children in making child exploitation material, 11 counts of making child exploitation material, two counts of making child abuse films and one count of distribution of child exploitation material.

The investigation was a joint operation between Warwick Child Protection and Investigation Unit and Taskforce Argos, using the name ‘Operation North Lithium.’

The man is expected to appear in Warwick Magistrates’ Court on 13 April.

Investigations are ongoing and investigators ask that anyone who may have had contact with a person using the aforementioned usernames contact Crime Stoppers.

Mayor Blundell hails bikes SOUTHERN Downs Mayor Peter Blundell has given an overwhelming thumbs up to the second round of the 2015 Yamaha Motor Finance Australian Superbike Championship presented by Motul Pirelli, after it visited Morgan Park in Warwick over the weekend.

The event, which ran from Friday through to Sunday, helped generate significant economic benefit into the

region, and the event was whole-heartedly embraced by the entire local community.

Speaking from the track, Cr Blundell expressed his delight at seeing the 5000-strong crowd at the track, and acknowledged the significance the event and facility played in the region.

Icon opens doors with tours ST MARK'S Anglican Parish of Warwick, which dates back to 1868, is opening its doors as part of the National Trust’s Heritage Festival, with guided tours of the sandstone and stained glass church.

One of the oldest churches in Queensland, St Mark’s Anglican Parish demonstrates the growth of the regional centre from the arrival of the Europeans in 1840.

Guided tours accompanied by sounds of the carillon and organ will start at 9am on Saturday 18 April and finish at 4pm with jewellery, cards and homebaked goods available until noon along with refreshments in the hall. The weekend event will start again at 11am on Sunday 19 April.

Parishioners will be able to answer questions on the tour and participants will be shown the refurbished pipe organ, a memorial for those of the parish who died in World War I. Participants will get to take a closer look at the stained glass windows in the nave which are dedicated to early benefactors of the church.

St Mark’s Heritage Days co-ordinator, Sue Nalder, said the stained glass windows were highly regarded.

“They are regarded as the finest collection of windows by renowned stained glass window maker William Bustard,” Ms Nalder said.

“The first St Mark’s (church) on the present site was a timber slab construction, built for around $25,000 in today’s dollars and the second, the basis of today’s building, was completed in 1870 with a $700,000

Stock doubles WITH 1331 cattle yarded at the Warwick cattle market, the supply of stock almost doubled the previous week’s level and the increased numbers contained a good mix of most classes.

A full panel of exporters was present and operating, along with the usual feed and trade buyers, plus some restockers.

Medium and heavy weight yearling steers to feed gained 4c to 6c/kg and local trade lines improved a similar amount.

Cows lifted in price by 4c to 10c/kg, with the plain condition lines receiving the largest gains.

Calves to the trade averaged 192c, while those returning to the paddock averaged 213c and

made to 235.2c/kg.

A few vealer steers to the trade made to 259c and vealer heifers made to 238.2c, with the largest numbers close to 215c/ kg. Light weight yearling steers to restockers made to 261.2c to average 240c, with the lesser quality lines around 211c/kg.

Plain condition medium weight lines to feed averaged 236c and the better classes averaged 246c and made to 250.2c/kg.

Heavy weights to feed generally sold around 250c, with some to 253.2c/kg.

The best of the light weight yearling heifers averaged 200c, with some to 210.2c/kg.

Medium weights to feed averaged 207c and local trade lines averaged 237c and made to 244.2c/kg.

Heavy grown steers averaged 224c and made to 239.2c and bullocks averaged 225c, with some weighing over 750kg reaching to 234.2c/kg. A handful of full mouth bullocks made to 216.2c/kg.

Medium weight 2 score cows averaged 163c and the 3 scores 174c/kg. The best of the medium weights made to 200.2c and good heavy cows made to 211.2c to average 197c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 245.2c/kg.

Baroque for cello mellow BAROQUE music is all the rage at the moment with the Brisbane Baroque Festival in full swing.

Stanthorpe will be getting its baroque moment on Sunday 19 April with a glorious concert of baroque cello music at the Robert Channon Winery.

The cellists are baroque experts Belinda Manwaring, Tim Blomfield and Julie Hopson.

Robert Channon said: “The baroque period includes many of our best loved composers Handel, JS Bach, Vivaldi and so many more.

The concert is the Swigmore Hall at Robert Channon Wines at 2pm on Sunday 19 April.

Performances take the flak THE School of Arts Theatre Tenterfield presents two live theatre shows.

Flak features true stories from the men who flew in World War II. It was written and performed by Michael Veitch, the actor, author and broadcaster, best known for his roles on the sketch comedy television shows The D-Generation, Fast Forward and Full Frontal, as well as for his books on World War II aviation and the Bass Strait Islands.

The second show is called The One Day of The Year, a classic story about the meaning of Anzac Day. For war veterans like Alf Cook and his friend Wacka Dawson, it’s the chance to commemorate history, celebrate heroism and conjure national pride.

For Alf’s son Hughie, Anzac Day flies the flag for a very different reality, one that brings the dignity of the Diggers to its knees and into the gutter - via one too many down the pub.

Sparking huge controversy on its release in the sixties, the play’s first ever production had a policeman stationed at the stage door to ward off the angry public.

The One Day of the Year looks at our national legend through the eyes of generation, class and character.

On the 100 year anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, this is a thoroughly fresh take on this truly Australian classic.

Competition wide open

By CASEY O’CONNOR AFTER a few miserable rounds, this tipster finally hit form in round six with eight from eight, but more importantly league fans were treated to some awesome games of football.

Rugby League has certainly become a game of attrition and injuries are playing a significant role in the form of some of the more fancied sides. Suspensions are also exposing the underbelly of some teams. The competition landscape is a long way from what we anticipated at the start of the season.

In round seven there is no room for resting on your tipping laurels.

Out-of-form teams, injuries and suspensions make it another tough task.

In the first of the Friday night games, the out-of-form Sea Eagles face an injury and suspension-ravaged Doggies. The anticipated return of Jamie Lyon and Feleti Mateo will be welcome news to devastated Eagles fans.

The problems in the Eagles nest appear to run deeper than just poor form but they have their chance to rise to the occasion this week. In a difficult game, the Eagles are set to inflict more pain on the Dogs who still have their captain and several heavy weights on the chain and in the doghouse.

In contrast, two of the current inform teams Brisbane and St George clash at Jubilee Oval. The Broncos top the table and the Dragons are on equal points with Melbourne and the Bunnies.

The Dragons were breathing fire against the depleted Doggies. It was a tradesman-like win for the Dragons. Prop Tyson Frizell was lucky to stay on the paddock after his shot on Tim Browne left the Dogs prop unconscious and stretchered from the field. Frizell will have a couple of weeks to contemplate that act of lunacy. Andrew Fifita is also facing a stint on the sideline.

The Brisbane Roosters game was one of the clashes of the season.

Recalled to the starting side, Sam Thaiday made every post a winner, playing one of the best games of his career. The scores were locked at 18-all at full time. Both sides traded

field goal attempts before Ben Hunt broke the deadlock backing himself to get through the defence to the try line.

The Dragons will have the backing of an army of supporters but I think the Broncos will get the biscuits. Hold on to your hats this will be a corker.

In round six, the Titans proved they are capable of grabbing the headlines for all the right reasons.

After blowing the Sea Eagles out of their nest the previous week, the Titans engine room played havoc with the Eels. Speedster James Roberts has become the new master of the intercept giving some Eels wind burn on his way to the try line.

Penrith won the battle against Manly but the win was costly. In another injury blow, they lost Jamal Idris for the season with a knee injury.

Neil Henry has the Titans focused on football, and if they reproduce their round six performance they will add to the Panthers pain.

The accolades continue for the Cowboys number seven and the team continues to build momentum.

On Monday night, JT made it three man-of-the match awards on the trot with another stellar performance. It is no coincidence that the Cowboys have also won three from their last three.

Thurston’s form has been breathtaking and the Cowboys big men led by Matt Scott and James Tamou have been punishing.

Back to Dairyfarmers on Saturday night, the home fans will be hoping they replicate their recent heroics when they host the Warriors.

At Mt Smart on Saturday, the Warriors saw off the Tigers giving popular winger Manu Vatuvei a win in his 200th NRL game. The score line was 32-22 but the game was never really the Warriors until the full-time siren.

Two big packs will mean plenty of big hits, but with another Thurston masterclass on the cards the Cowboys should come away with another scalp.

Two of the more disappointing sides face off on Sunday afternoon, the Knights and the Eels. After bursting out the blocks and leading the field for the first few rounds the Knights have lost form. The Eels decimated by injury have no confidence at all. Their completion rate against the Titans was awful and the score line flatters their performance.

The Sharks and Bunnies wrap up round seven at Remondis. The Sharks proved too good for the Knights last week. There was much to like about that win. Brimming with confidence after back-to-back wins, they are primed to upset the Bunnies who have plenty of walking wounded including Greg Inglis. THERE seems to be a general consensus among all Australians, those who love cricket and those who really have no idea of the game or interest in it that summer in Australia will never be the same after the passing of Richie Benaud.

Generations have now grown accustomed to Richie’s unique voice, introducing us all to a summer of cricket. It has been as Australian as meat pies and Holden cars. At age 84, Benaud’s was an innings well played by a truly remarkable man.

When you reflect on Benaud’s life as many have done in the past few days, you cannot help but marvel at the vision of this man who played such a pivotal role in shaping the game of cricket in this modern era. It was Benaud along with Frank Worrell who rejuvenated the ailing Test Cricket scene during the famous tied Test in 1960.

Benaud, of course, will always be remembered for his links to World Series Cricket and his role as Captain of the Channel Nine Commentary Team. What that has overshadowed for many years was his outstanding cricket record.

His minimalist approach to broadcasting was outstanding, but he did not step back from controversy as we saw during the infamous underarm incident.

There are many things in the current game that have their origins around Richie Benaud.

He had just a touch of showman as a player.

The first to come to the crease with the famous upturned collar and unbuttoned shirt. The first to celebrate the fall of a wicket.

He was always quick with a naughty quip about an on-field incident but never pushing the boundaries too far.

Many have a Richie moment including myself. About 12 years ago, Ian Healy invited my young nephew Dylan and I to tour the commentary box during a break in play in a one day match at the Gabba. All the normal suspects were there and I am not sure who was more overawed to be in the presence of Australian Captains Mark Taylor, Bill Lawry and Ian Chappell. Heals in hushed, almost revered tones indicated to a chair pointing out Benaud’s famous beige jacket “That’s Richie’s - he’s just not here at the moment”.

A little disappointed, we continued our tour but were delighted to find as we were about to leave that the man belonging to “that jacket” had returned. We both knew it was something special to share a few words about that game and cricket in general with him.

Benaud was the master of the one liner.

Here are some of my favourites: There was a slight interruption there for athletics (a streaker on the paddock).

He’s not quite got hold of that one. If he had, it would have gone for nine. (Justin Langer).

Bruce Reid is not the worst batsman there is at the international level? But those who are worse would not need to hire the Myer Music Bowl to hold a convention.

He’s usually a good puller, but he couldn’t get it up that time (batsman).

Richie Benaud - cricketers and fans across the world owe you a debt of gratitude.

- Casey MIKE JONES AIMING HIGH ON his way to winning the second round of the Super Bike Championships at Morgan Park Raceway last weekend, Mike Jones smashed his own lap record in the Super pole session. Jones went eight-tenths of a second under his own lap record on the fifth of his six laps in the 10-minute Superpole session. Jones finished third in round one of the Championships on the famous Phillip Island track and although he has not ridden the Barbagallo track in Western Australia, he is aiming for a podium finish. Jones who at 21 is a veteran of the Morgan Park circuit is hoping to eventually compete in Moto GP or world superbikes. His performances at Morgan Park over the weekend were certainly eye-catching. In the 10-minute Superpole session on Saturday, Jones was almost two-seconds quicker than the rest of the field.

A crowd estimated to be around 5000 flocked to Morgan Park for the popular event.

EARLY START TO GRAB A WIN IT is great to get an early start - but as Eric McLellan found out last weekend when you give the field a score to catch, you have a nervous wait until you safely claim a win. McLellan was back in the Stanthorpe clubhouse with a score of nett 62, which was eventually good enough for a win.

His closest rival was Declan Beare. His nett 63 earned him the runners-up spot.

In the Ladies event, Hannah Reeves who returned nett 73 had a one-shot margin over runnerup, Kay Webb. All four players are now in the best dressed category, thanks to the sponsor of the day, Richard Reardon.

Pro-pins were won by Declan Beare at 1/10, Hannah Reeves at 5/14 and Kev Rowling at 9/18.

Brendan Barker played the 13th hole in four to take the balls on offer for the birdies nest. Pin shots went to Darryl Boekholt at 3/12 and Brendan Barker at 17. Hannah Reeves took the ladies pin at 3/12 and Neta Thouard had best approach at 17.

In the run down, there was a ball each to Davis Burgess (64), Max Hunter (68), Simon Shannon and Rob Reeves (69). Lyn Ludlow took a ball in the ladies run down.

This weekend, the Stanthorpe club is hosting visitors from Wantima and the API players who are sponsoring a single stroke competition on Saturday and a four ball on Sunday.

Local golfers are reminded that early tee off times have been arranged to accommodate the large number of visiting golfers, so please check the time sheet on the board and get your names down for the available places if you have not done so already.

The Stanthorpe Pennants team had a white wash against their opponents at Pittsworth last weekend. Contact Darryl Boekholt if you are available this weekend. Pennants players will be playing at Clifton on Sunday and are expecting sterner competition when they take on Pittsworth.

KRAAK EARNS AUSTRALIAN CALL UP WARWICK softballer Rachel Kraak has been selected in the Australian U17 Girls Softball Squad to play at the Friendship Series International Tournament in Sydney in June this year. Rachel was selected on her performance at the Nationals in Canberra in January.

Rachel is the first softballer from Warwick in the past two decades to make an Australian squad.

Earlier in March, Rachel, a senior at Warwick State High School represented the Darling Downs Softball team at the State Championships in Townsville where she recorded a batting average of .577 and a slugging average of 1.000.

Rachel Kraak has been selected to represent Australia in the Australian under-17 Girls Softball Squad.

Rachel was selected from this tournament in the Queensland U19s School Girls Team to compete at the Pacific School Games in Adelaide in November.

HOLES FOR BOWLS HAVE you heard the saying “Holes were made for Bowls.“ It was never more evident than on the fast greens of The Summit and Goondiwindi during the SDMDBA district singles championship last weekend. As the action moved to Texas on Sunday for the finals, bowlers continued to find the holes between bowls to either claim shots or glide right on past.

Congratulations to Stanthorpe’s David Stibbard who outlasted the opposition to claim the singles title this year. Summit greenkeepers Zel and Postman Ray did a wonderful job preparing two fine greens for the event on Saturday. Thanks to all the markers who generously donated their time and also to Darren and Quinton for marking/ umpiring and running the bar.

The Summit team of Norm Gale, Gaye Wilmot, Wayne Thomas and Rod Newlands was in the winner’s circle on Sunday winning the Fours Carnival at Stanthorpe.

Bowlers are advised that the Summit Bowls club will now hold the A Grade Singles competition on 9 May. The winner will go on to represent the Summit Club at the Champion of Champions event. The Summit Bowlers weekend at Evans Head is scheduled for 4 and 5 July. Organisers are seeking numbers for the weekend to confirm arrangements. Those players planning on escaping the winter chill on that weekend are asked to provide a $50 deposit to the club by 2 May. It is a 1pm start for $100 trophy day this Saturday at the Summit. Bowlers are asked to have their names in to the club by noon.

VETERANS ENJOY VETERAN golfers from across the Darling Downs enjoyed a mixed four ball Stableford at the Stanthorpe Club on Monday. One player cer-

tainly proved that age is no barrier to enjoying a good game of golf. Keith Hill celebrated his 90th birthday on the day.

Local players used their knowledge of the course to win the major prizes. Keith Barnett teamed with ex-Stanthorpe member, Tub Ingall, their score of 43 points enough to give them a win. Only a point off them in second spot were Linda Kelly and Aaron Simmers returning 42 points.

David Cass collected both pin shots for the men and Christine Welstead held the ladies pin at 3/12. Doreen Duffy took the approach at 17.

In the run down, balls were shared by the teams with 41 points. They included John and Belinda Bridle, David and Ann Cass, Lyle Bryant and Edith Stewart and Angelo Maugeri and Rosemary Fawdon.

The course was beautifully presented by greenkeeper Bill and the organisers would like to thank all those volunteers who assisted and made it such a successful day.

A good crew rolled up and enjoyed the day.

All is in readiness for the first round of the Anzac Tribute Shoot this weekend.

It will feature a three to four event program and will include 10 bisalloy gongs for the military pistol event. Five bisalloy targets for the rifle, 2 shots each target. A 100 metre 10 shot paper targets from the benchrest area. An optional extra is a 300 metre prone using military scope. (Cost $25pp) The second wave of the Anzac Tribute Shoot will be held on 26 April. Organisers have split the event over two days to give the ambos and police members and others on duty or involved on 26 April an opportunity to compete.

BUSHRANGERS MAKE SOUTH WEST TEAM THE Border Bushrangers have seven representatives in the South West Country side after last weekend’s annual trials played in Miles. The Bushrangers put in a solid effort against the combined Mitchell, Miles and St George side but were beaten 50-36.

Coach Butch Smith said he was pleased with the performance of the side who had only a couple of opportunities to train together before the game. Smith said one of the highlights of the game was the performance of Mitchell flyer Michael Purcell who once again showed all of his class and speed with the ball. Smith was full of praise for Gremlins player Kyle Marsh who had a great game in the trial. John Trindall the Killarney captain coach earned himself another South West jersey. Smith said he was impressed with Trindall’s level of fitness this season. Other BRL players selected were Jason Wilmot (Gremlins), Jack Daniel (Tigers), Brendan Perkins (Gremlins); Jake Kelly (Gremlins) and Jarrod McIntosh (Gremlins). BRL President Dolly Bennett said she was delighted that seven players had made the squad.

BUSY ON THE CROQUET GREENS CATCHING up with all the Association Croquet news after the Easter break. In games on 31 March, Carol Verwey pipped Val Richardson in a close game 14/13. In another close game, Grace Howard and Jenny Tunbridge (18) just edged out Joy Newman and Effey Russell (17).

This week Margaret Dickenson and Andrea Denkewitz took on Val Shephard and Carol Verwey. Margaret had breaks of five and three pegged out with the score 26 - 14.

Playing against Jenny Tunbridge and Joy Newman, Pat Schnoor and Heather Widderick had a 25-18 win. Breaks of seven and four by pat Schnoor helped the team to the win.

Effey Russell had a 26-20 win over Val Richardson in a game where Val showed her skill scoring two peels.

Hoop Runners enjoyed two long games. The 10 players were divided into two teams of six and four. Visitor William McCreery -Rye joined the group for a game, and despite never having played before went close to nailing “hoop in one.” Another enjoying the game for the first time was Judy Lock.

Congratulations to Val Fancourt who scored another “hoop in one” adding another tick under her name on the competition board. Games commence at 8.30am, and for anyone interested in joining the Hoop Runners, information is available through Elaine 4681 4357, Val 0420 415 154 or Shirley 4681 1683.

Gateballers were reduced to three on each team due to the school holidays. The Red team were in control, winning all matches. Those on the white team will be out to make amends at their next encounter. Gateballers are hosting a visiting Toowoomba team on 24 April and invite anyone interested in trying the game to come along and watch. There will be two games being played on the court at the same time starting at 9.30am and finish around 2.30pm.

PLAYERS ENJOY COOLER CONDITIONS THE cooler conditions signal even better golfing

for much of the first half as the Hawks opened up an 18-nil lead and did well to go to half time with the score at 26-12. The Cowboys who had several players out with injury had better use of the ball in the second half and fought back strongly to get within four points of their opponents.

The Hawks again upped the tempo and late tries to Billy Jackwitz and Callum Woolacott put the game beyond the Cowboy’s reach.

Warwick Centre Joe Fuimaono scored a double crossing in the first half and again in the second half. The Cowboys other try scorers were Tyson Skyring (one of the best on ground) and Michael Pearson. Matt Gainey nailed three conversions.

In a thrilling game, the Cowboys reserve grade won 22-20. The Under 18s had a 28-16 win. The C grade game was won by Gatton.

This weekend’s bye will be welcomed by the Cowboys who have a few injury concerns among the group. The Cowboys next game will be a home game at Fr Ranger Oval on 26 April when they host Souths.

ONE FOR WATTSY WATTSY (Bob Watts) nailed a win at Sporters last Sunday. Rob Reeves had to be satisfied with the runners-up position but had the Best Gross.

Run-downs went to Angelo Maugeri and Josh Anderson who has found more time for golf now that the cricket season is over. The pin shot at the third wen to Keith Allen. No Won Kim took the Pro Pin. The lucky winners of the meat tray winners were M.Z. and Mick Speer.

Sporters are reminded that Sunday is the API Golf Day - an 18 hole game. Sporters play the normal nine holes. Anyone wishing to play in the 18 hole event will need a second card for the remaining nine holes. The two cards will be combined for your final score.

There will be no hire buggies available for Sporters this week. Sporters tee off time is between 7.30am-8am and the other 9.30am.

WATTLES THRASH SOUTHS ROUND four of the TRL had that winning feeling for Wattles. On Saturday night at Platz Oval, Wattles ran away with a big 52-22 win over Souths.

Last season’s premiers dominated across the park in the first half. Two tries late in the half allowed the Tigers to go to the break, trailing 22-12.

In the second half, Wattles went on a scoring spree adding 24 points in the space of 15 minutes.

Tries to Jason Bradfield and Brenden Wilson and a double to Joel Koina, gave the premiers a big win. It capped off a great day for Wattles who were successful in all four grades. The Under 18s won 45-12; Reserve Grade 54-0 and C Grade 2012. This weekend Wattles play Valleys at Herb Steinhort Oval on Saturday.
