It was announced last week that the old pool complex would be reinstated as a 24-hour fitness and health centre.

While some welcomed this, others seemed to think that something else would better fit the site.

Laura Coomber said: “Put a cinemas in, Cranbourne needs it,” while another reader agreed and said there were already enough gyms in the area.

The Cranbourne Racing Centre and Recreation reserve Committee of Management had announced that it had secured a tenant for the site, on Grant Street.

Committee of management president Geoff Whiffin said the group was thrilled the site would be resurrected.

NEWS that the derelict Cranbourne pool complex will be turned into a fitness centre has sparked heated comment in the community.

Cranbourne News readers expressed their views on the CranbourneBerwick News Facebook page after the story was posted online.

While some voiced their disappointment over the current state of the old pools, others suggested alternative avenues the recreation reserve committee of management could have explored when looking to transform the site.

Readers were also asked to share

their memories of the old Cranbourne pools, which have now become a haven for criminal activity.

Loretta Iverach said she could remember “many summer days” at the pools.

“Many wonderful memories were made spending time with friends, family and neighbours,” she said.

“My own children also had swimming lessons there before moving over to Casey Race.”

Others couldn’t believe what the site had become.

Angela Galpin said she “couldn’t believe what it looked like now”.

“We went to lots of kids’ parties there back in the day,” she said.

A DRINKING tap at a Cranbourne secondary school left a sour taste in students’ mouths after it had been inadvertently connected to recycled water.

One of the drinking taps at St Peter’s College Cranbourne has been connected to recycled water for more than a year, and the school is not aware of any student illnesses as a result of this.

St Peter’s College principal Tim Hogan confirmed that “Class A recycled water was mistakenly connected to a drinking tap at St Peter’s College, East Campus, during the landscaping of the campus in 2013.”

“The school’s maintenance staff discovered the error and the drinking tap was immediately shut down,” he said.

An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Victorian Building Authority concerning the external contractor(s) engaged to connect the drinking water fountain.

Mr Hogan said that the school would work with the Department of Health and Human Services to determine any health impacts.

“Advice we have received from the Department is that drinking the Class A recycled water may have led to a slight increased risk of gastro,” he said.

“I should point out that there has been thorough testing of all drinking water outlets at the campus and no other issues

The Department of Health and Human Services (DH&HS) together with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning issued a statement following the revelations.

“The issue was detected by a maintenance worker at St Peter’s College Cranbourne East campus and South East Water was alerted on 1 April,” a spokesperson said.

The school community was notified, and preliminary assessments conducted by the DH&HS indicate that the risk

of illness from drinking this Class A recycled water is low.

A further assessment of chemicals possibly present in the water found that the vast majority were at very low concentrations and unlikely to be harmful when consumed over the time that the recycled water was connected to the drinking fountain. All schools that receive recycled water from the Eastern Treatment Plant and the Pakenham Class A Recycled Water plant will be tested to ensure no direct connection has occurred.

Jumps race ban plea

By BRIDGET SCOTT TWO horses died in separate jumps trials at the Cranbourne Racing Track last week with the same jockey on the back of both horses.

Racing Victoria (RV) confirmed that two horses were “humanely euthanised” by an on-course vet last Wednesday morning as a result of injuries sustained in falls at the Cranbourne jumps trials.

The deaths have sparked outrage with animal welfare groups, including the RSPCA. RSPCA spokesperson Sharon MacKenzie said they were “saddened and angered” to hear of the deaths of

‘Feel the Fame’ and ‘Verification’ last week.

“The deaths are two of many which could have been prevented if Racing Victoria had followed through on plans to ban jumps racing back in 2009,” she said.

The Dean Binaisse-trained Feel the Fame and the Brett Scott-trained Verification fell in separate trials with jockey Richard Eynon riding both horses during the time of their falls.

In a statement issued by RV it was said that Mr Eynon was assessed after both falls.

“On-course medical staff examined Mr Eynon following the first fall and

passed him fit to continue riding,” a Racing Victoria spokesperson said.“Mr Eynon was again examined after the second fall by on-course medical staff who reported that he did not suffer any injuries.”

Despite this, RV Stewards have requested a medical certificate before he be permitted to ride again.

Both incidents have been referred to the Jumps Review Panel while a post-mortem will be conducted on both horses.

Ms Mackenzie said these two deaths brought the number of horses that have died in Victoria due to jumps racing to 60 since 2006.

“These deaths are a tragedy, least of all because they could have been avoided,” Ms Mackenzie said.

“It is deeply disappointing that year after year, we have seen horses maimed and killed for the benefit of a handful of trainers and spectators.”

The recent deaths have seen further calls for the sport to be banned.

“We call on the Victorian Government to move our state into the 21st century and ban jumps racing now,” Ms Mackenzie said.

“For a Government that has repeatedly stated its commitment to animal welfare, now is the time for actions to speak louder than words.”

Pilot airlifted after Tooradin plane crash

By BRIDGET SCOTT A LIGHT plane accident in Tooradin last weekend left an elderly man hospitalised while a 16-year-old escaped nearly unscathed.

On Sunday 12 April, emergency services attended the Tooradin Airfield after a plane crashed when attempting to land around midday.

Police from Cranbourne and Dandenong, as well as members from the Pakenham Road Rescue Crew (PRRC) attended the scene to help free the 74-year-old pilot from the wreckage.

He was airlifted to hospital.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant at Dandenong CIU Dean Hayes said the matter was under investigation with the cause still to be determined.

He said it appeared the plane was trying to land on the landing strip for light aircrafts, and appeared to have bounced from that area across a ditch, and finished on a mound.

“We are yet to find out if it was in regards to a pilot or mechanical error,” he said.

The police officer said the pilot was being assessed for spinal injuries, while the 16-year-old boy was taken to Dandenong Hospital where he was treated for minor scratches and possibly a burn from the seat belt.

Pakenham SES Media Liaison officer Shayne Honey said they were called to the airfield around 12.22pm where they found a light aircraft on the grass; however an eight foot deep creek lay between rescuers and the plane.

“Rescuers were required to erect a makeshift bridge over the muddy creek with ladders to access the plane and take materials to enable the rescue,” he said.

Mr Honey said rescuers were required to carry rescue equipment, including jaws of life, over the creek and into the paddock before they could begin to extract the pilot.

“The pilot was removed from the plane, placed on a stretcher and carried over the creek using a pulley system,” he said.

A CRANBOURNE garage was set on fire in suspicious circumstances last week.

The owner of the Camms Road property reported the fire around 4.30am on Tuesday 7 April after he heard a large noise and found his garage in flames.

It’s understood the fire was mostly concentrated in the garage and caused only minor damage to a neighbouring property.

CFA crews were called to the scene, but no one was injured in the blaze.

Police are treating the fire as suspicious.

A LETTERBOX has been set on fire in Cranbourne over the weekend.

It’s believed the owner of the Ovata Place home heard a loud noise around 10.10pm on Saturday night and rushed outside to find his letterbox in flames.

A burnt spray can of Mortein was found nearby.

It’s believed the cost of the damage will be roughly $200.

Police abandoned hot pursuit POLICE were forced to call off a dangerous car chase in Berwick after a coupe bearing false plates was detected.

It’s understood police approached the dark sports coupe on Clyde Road around 12.25am on Saturday night but the driver sped off.

Police pursued the car as it headed outbound on the Monash Freeway but soon abandoned the chase because the offender was driving too erratically.

AS LORRAINE Riches put it, everyone knows of someone who has been touched by anxiety and depression.

Lorraine, the president of the Narre Warren Lions Club, reflected on her late mother’s battle with depression.

“My mother was diagnosed with depression as a young child and she lived with it all her life,” Lorraine said.

“And with her generation you were told to just get on with it, you didn’t speak about it.”

Later this month Lorraine will convene a special depression and information session at the Casey council chambers, held in conjunction with the Narre Warren Lions Club and Beyondblue.

The Pakenham and Endeavour Hills Lions Clubs, and the Berwick Lionesses, are also lending their support to the upcoming event.

It comes as Beyondblue and the Lions Clubs of Australia joined forces last year to create the Joining Hands initiative, a project which will focus on raising awareness around anxiety and depression.

“It’s to show people that they aren’t alone,” Lorraine said of the upcoming Casey event, to be held on 23 April.

“You may be too afraid to seek help because you’re afraid of what people might think.

“So to break that down there’s a lot of avenues out there, and you don’t have to feel ashamed.”

Working as a nurse, Lorraine said she continually sees how depression and anxiety can leave its victims helpless and not knowing where to turn.

“Some people are left almost catatonic, and they can’t function,” she said.

“Others just go through the motions.”

The gold coin donations raised from the event will all go towards Beyondblue.

“Even some people feel alone within their own families and are reluctant to speak to anyone,” Lorraine said.

“Everyone’s been touched by knowing somebody with anxiety or depression in their lives.

“And with the stigma and their response, sometimes you just don’t how to approach them.”

A CRANBOURNE couple are outraged after they received word that a half-way house would be constructed across the road from their bottle shop business.

Danielle and Andre Khalil are in shock after information provided to them indicated that a half-way house would be built on the vacant block of land directly opposite their Bottle-O on Lurline Street, Cranbourne.

“We are told it will be a half-way house and accommodation for floaters,” Ms Khalil said.

“We have strong objections to this.”

While the couple has claimed that this is a State Government initiative, the News could not receive confirmation that this was the case.

A State Government spokesperson said the government is not aware of the half-way house and that most are developed by private operators.

“We definitely don’t own any plans for that site,” the spokesperson said.

The City of Casey Manager for Planning Duncan Turner said there are State Government planning provisions that allow for shared accommodation uses without the need for local planning permission.

“The City of Casey has not issued any planning permits.

“Council is investigating this matter to determine the exact nature of the proposal and its compliance with the State Government planning provisions,” he said.

The couple couldn’t understand the logic behind a decision to build such a house opposite a bottle shop.

school.“We can’t even object to it,” she said.

“They’re full steam ahead already and there was no notification at all.”

Mr Khalil said people are “wild

over it” while his wife said she would like to know about the type of people who will live there.

“Who are these people seeking short-term accommodation?” she said.

A LAUNCH night for the Cranbourne-Narre Warren Relay for Life will give new and old participants an insight into what the event is all about.

The event on Wednesday 13 May will give residents the chance to meet organisers and learn about the fund-raising initiative.

Volunteer committee member Brooke Walford said there would be a major announcement regarding the relay at the launching event and people can find out ways to support the event.

“We encourage all Cranbourne and Narre Warren residents to attend as we will be taking registrations on the night, selling candle bags via cash or card and there is a fantastic door prize,” Brooke said.

Last year, the Cranbourne Narre Relay For Life event raised close to $125,000 and this year’s fund-raising goal is set at $150,000.

Brooke said they are on the lookout for more participants as well as businesses to support the event.

“We’re currently looking for passionate residents to gather their friends to participate in the Cranbourne Narre Relay For Life.

“We’re also looking for local businesses to provide support

Luke’s a survivor

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD RACHEL Shambrook’s voice trembles just slightly when the Narre Warren mother recalls the moment she was told her son, Luke, was alive.

But it’s the falter in Rachel’s voice which says so much more than words ever could.

Luke’s smiling face has been broadcast worldwide since the 11-year-old was miraculously rescued after going missing in bushland near Lake Eildon for four nights over Easter.

“I stepped outside the tent and the policeman was just standing there and fortunately, and I mean this in all sincerity, he didn’t give me too long to wonder why he was back again and just straight away he said, ‘They’ve got him, and he’s okay’,” Rachel said.

“If he’d given me any longer to think about it I would have been expecting, at that point, bad news.

“He had this look of sheer happiness on his face that finally he could come and say they’d found him.”

Every Easter Luke and his family - Rachel, his father, Tim, and his younger siblings Matthew and Lauren - stay with relatives and friends at the Candlebark camping area in the Lake Eildon National Park for the long weekend.

The Shambrooks arrived at the camping ground on Thursday afternoon and had breakfast with Luke the next day, but later on Friday morning the young boy took it upon himself to go on an adventure.

“He’s very familiar with the whole place and what we do there,” Rachel said.

walks that we routinely do because we love the place so much.

“Our best guess is he woke in the morning and started his normal routine of getting dressed and having breakfast outside the tent then it suddenly occurred to him, he hadn’t been for his walk.

“Our best guess, given that he can’t tell us why he left, is that he took it upon himself to go.”

Luke’s ordeal is a memory now but those four nights were the longest of Rachel and Tim’s lives.

His mother said one of the most difficult moments was calling out Luke’s name and hearing nothing back as Tim and Rachel continued to search for their child long after night had fallen.

“The first night and the last night were probably the hardest,” Rachel said.

“When we got to the night-time,

there was that realisation that he was going to be out there, he was going to be by himself.

“We knew he wouldn’t have any food or water, and when we sat down to tea and went to bed ourselves, that was when it really hit the hardest.

“And then the new day would start and simply because it was a new day there was that sense of, just maybe today.

“Then the next night came.”

But each morning Rachel and Tim woke again to search for Luke, drawing on their inner strength as much for Matthew, 10, and Lauren, 7, as for themselves.

Rachel, who has been pivotal in setting up the Casey Cardinia Sibling Support group, is passionate about looking after siblings of children with a disability.

And on the Monday hope was once again rekindled when Luke’s

beanie was found.

The Shambrooks said they had been blown away by the number of volunteers who had given up their time to join the rescue effort, including friends from the Berwick Church of Christ and other networks in Casey, even strangers from throughout Victoria.

Rachel, who was also involved heavily in the push to open the Specialist School in Officer, is still marvelling at Luke’s resilience, which saw his journey end safely in the care of doctors at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

While it’s nearly unfathomable to imagine what Rachel, Tim and their children have gone through at the start of this month, there may be a phrase that fits.

Next to the Shambrooks’ front door in Narre Warren is a plaque bearing three words.

“Home sweet home“.

Two arrests as $7.5m drug ring busted

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD MORE than $7.5 million worth of illicit drugs were seized and two men arrested after Casey CIU last week busted an extensive drug ring with several local links.

The joint AFP, customs and Casey police investigation - known as Operation Bigcray - saw more than two tonnes of the drug 1,4-Butanediol, similar to GHB, seized across four locations in Endeavour Hills and Dandenong on Tuesday 7 and Thursday 9 April.

In addition to the $7 million drug haul, it’s believed alleged stolen property and weapons were seized by police, while assets were also frozen.

A 30-year-old man from Endeavour Hills and a 42-year-old man from Narre Warren were arrested in relation to the bust.

The Endeavour Hills man has been remanded in custody and charged with drug trafficking, possession of proceeds of crimes, possession of stolen property and weapons offences.

He is set to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in July.

The Narre Warren man was released, pending further inquiries.

The drug haul was seized after four seperate warrants were issued across two days.

It’s understood the first property raided was in Endeavour Hills, and this led police to three separate storage sheds in Dandenong.

Detective Senior Sergeant Stuart Freeman praised the Casey CIU drug team on carrying out an “excellent job”, which, he said, had taken several months of planning.

1,4-Butanediol - a colourless and odourless liquid colloquially referred to as BD - is listed as an illicit drug precursor which can be metabolised in the liver to form GHB. GHB is an illegal drug in Australia.

Briefly Bike thief hunt A MAN has gained access to a house in Lyndhurst by climbing a fence, before stealing different types of property.

Sometime between 12.30pm and 12.45pm on Monday 23 March the offender got into the home along Reyoff Place and took two bikes.

Police have released CCTV images and he was described as being dark in appearance, with black hair and a goatee.

He also wore jeans and a jacket with a HY on the upper left and had socks but no shoes on.

The man threw the bikes over the fence and took off.

Three times the limit A CRANBOURNE woman was busted behind the wheel by police while allegedly three times over the legal blood alcohol limit last weekend.

The woman in her thirties was caught as part of Operation Nightforce which ran in Mulgrave and Glen Iris last weekend.

The Traffic Accident Commission (TAC) funded initiative ran on Friday and Saturday nights in High Street, Malvern and Toorak Road, Glen Iris.The woman blew a reading of .154 and recorded the highest result for those caught during the operation.

She is scheduled to face Moorabbin Magistrates' Court at a later date.

As part of the operation, Prahran Highway Patrol officers conducted 1143 preliminary breath tests, detecting 20 drink drivers. In total, police detected 39 traffic offences.

Police probe car chase POLICE have released CCTV footage of a person they want to speak to in relation to an erratic car chase through Narre Warren last week.

It’s believed police approached the black Honda Civic with no plates around 7.35pm on Thursday 9 April but the driver sped off.

Police have since released footage of a person they believe to be the offender, taken at a petrol station.

Family flees fire

By BRIDGET SCOTT A FATHER and daughter made a lucky escape on Sunday night when their Hampton Park house burst into flames.

Extensive damage was caused to the Alma Road home.

About 11.15pm the Hampton Park CFA was called to the fire which was thought to have been caused by burning candles in a bedroom.

Lieutenant Sean McGuckin said it took crews about two hours to get the blaze under control.

“We attended very quickly and got it under control fast,” he said.

“However, crews were on scene until around 1.30am the next morning.”

Neither of the residents who were at home at the time sustained any serious injuries although Lt McGuckin said they

were obviously in shock.

Lt McGuckin said while the contents of the house were destroyed, the structure remained somewhat intact.

“There was extensive damage which extended throughout the house,“ he said.

The Hampton Park Fire Brigade as well as firefighters from Hallam and a specialist vehicle from Frankston attended the incident.

A SELFLESS Cannons Creek resident who has collected items for over 45 years will put them to auction this weekend, with all funds raised to go towards a water project in Tonga.

Andrew Pinxt moved to the area in 1968 and started his collection not long after.

“I had a collection in Holland, but was forced to get rid of it when I migrated,” he said.

The collector said he could recall visiting the tip not long after he arrived, arriving with two rubbish bins and returning with four.

“I collect whatever I can get my hands on,” he said.

With everything from lamps, toys, old school memorabilia and horse carriages, near everything is set to go as the Cannons Creek resident and his wife get ready to downsize.

Unsure of where they will move to yet, the couple hope to remain in the area.

Mr Pinxt hopes to get around 100 people to his auction this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and said all funds raised would go towards a new water system he was helping build in Tonga as part of a Rotary project.

He said while he would find it hard to let most of it go he “must be realistic” and would be particularly sad to let go of the various lamps he had collected.

“It was fun, real fun,” he said.

Mr Pinxt said he had a museum set up and could remember groups from retirement villages coming through and donating pieces to his displays.

“I treasure just about everything,” he said.

Among his collection are old school desks as well as a number of ink wells which he came across when he did the gas behind the Cranbourne Primary School.

Up close with reptiles

By BRIDGET SCOTT CHILDREN experienced the wild side of nature last week during school holidays and got their hands on the reptile displays at Cranbourne Homecentre.

On Tuesday 7 April, school kids were given the rare chance to meet and greet a variety of scaly, slithering animals.

Parents watched as their children braved the cold-blooded creatures which included snakes, lizards, frogs and a crocodile.

The youngsters were also taught how to handle the animals correctly, as well as the reptiles’ role in nature and learnt how to treat a snakebite.

Parents were kept nothing short of entertained as they watched on with coffees in hand, with the children also later treated to creative craft workshops from Lincraft.

LIFETIME OF ANTIQUE PASSION IN the mid 1960s, Andrew Pinxt arrived in Australia by ship as a 20-year-old migrant from the Netherlands seeking to make a new life for himself.

When he first arrived in Australia, Andrew boarded for a time in Dandenong.

Before leaving Europe, he was educated as a boilermaker/welder and structural engineer but as a hobby in his spare time Andrew began to collect antiques.

However, because it was not possible for him to bring his fledgling collection with him he had no choice but to reluctantly leave it behind with his family on his departure.

In 1970 Andrew married his beloved wife Patsy and they moved to Cranbourne to establish his business and start their family.

Their first home was in Narre Warren Road (Cameron Street) opposite the Melbourne Hunt Club.

In those days, when Cranbourne was still a small country town with minimal services, there was no regular rubbish collection and the toilet was in the back yard.

So, a part of Andrew’s regular weekly chores was to take their domestic rubbish to the local tip.

The only problem was that in the early seventies old items and unwanted goods were usually disposed of at the rubbish tip. So Andrew would visit the tip with a fully laden rubbish

bin, only to return with his car full of antiques and other collectibles which had been deposited there by other residents.

Andrew boasts with a smirk, that even his matrimonial bed was sourced from the local rubbish tip.

In the early eighties, when Andrew and Patsy shifted their family from Cranbourne to their present property in the beautiful coastal village of Cannons Creek, they had a lot more room and Andrew’s passion for collecting grew by the day to become a very sizable and varied collection.

By LACHLAN MOORHEAD MIGRANT women in Casey looking for work now have somewhere to turn to in order to break into the Australian workplace.

This month the Hampton Park Friendship Network has helped launch a local 10-week training course for migrant women under the guidance of women’s employment group Fitted for Work.

Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Coalition (VIRWC) project leader Elaine Smith, who is helping to co-ordinate the workshops, said she had been eager to bring the program to Casey to meet an ever-growing need for work among migrant women.

“At the Women’s Friendship Cafe in Hampton Park, we meet many migrant women keen to make a start so I asked Fitted for Work to run a program here,” she said.

“We have many talented, educated and experienced women who come to settle in this suburb.

“Because their experience is from overseas they are not sure how to begin, what to say at an interview, or how to prepare a resume.

“Local business and professional women and employers can be a helping hand along the way so the women can take that first step into a job.”

The migrant women employment workshop will run for 10 weeks, eight of which will be held at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Hampton Park, while two will be run in the city.

The course will help participants in job searching, refining their resumes, practising interview responses, as well as teaching them about Australian workplace laws and culture.

Ms Smith also said the program was looking for successful local women who could act as mentors to others and help the participants seek work.

“The more women who are confident and earning in City of Casey, the more we all benefit,” she said.

CRANBOURNE Customers Service and Youth Information Centres will reopen their doors on Friday 24 April with a number of festivities to follow.

The council centres will reopen in their permanent location at Cranbourne Park with activities set to be run from 3pm until 5pm.

City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland said he was excited to see the reopening of two services at the shopping centre which recently underwent major redevelopments.

“Due to construction works occurring at the shopping centre, the council’s Cranbourne Customer Service Centre and Cranbourne Youth Information Centre were temporarily relocated for the last six months,” he said.

“Council will re-open the facilities at their new permanent location at Shop 156, Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre.”

Visitors to the store on the day will be able to enjoy a sausage sizzle, jam session and music, basketball competitions, games and an overview of the information and support available at both services.

In order to relocate the facilities will be closed on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 April.

During the closure, residents can visit the council’s other Customer Service Centres at Narre Warren or Narre Warren South, and the Hampton Park or Narre Warren Youth Information Centres. Alternatively residents can visit www.casey.vic.gov.au or phone Customer Service on 9705 5200.

Class reunion DEVON Meadows Primary School will celebrate its centenary next year and organisers want to track down all past students, staff and families to help commemorate the occasion.

President of the school council Rebecca Griffiths wants any past members of the school to come forward and be part of the celebrations which are planned for March next year.

“From humble beginnings in 1916 with 45 students and one school building to today with 220 students, new buildings and playground areas, Devon Meadows Primary School is still a beautiful little country school,” she said.

“Many past students and staff have fond memories of their time at the school and count their time here as some of the best years in their lives.”

Ms Griffiths said there is a centenary reunion dinner planned which will be held on Saturday 19 March at Settlers Run Golf and Country Club,

with some former students and staff members appearing as guest speakers on the night.

An open day market will run prior to this on Sunday 28 February from 10am until 3pm.

Ms Griffiths said the school buildings will be open for everyone to roam around and see the changes which have occurred at the school over the past 100 years.

Guests will also have the chance to order the centenary book and add their time to the centenary tree.

There will be stallholders on the day as well as students who will have their side show alley stalls.

A barbecue as well as a cake stall will also be open, and everyone is welcome.

Expo hones vital skills for a successful career

By GEORGIA WESTGARTH STUDENTS from across Casey can get hands-on experience and insightful industry knowledge on a wide range of jobs at the 2015 South East Careers Expo and Try a Trade on Tuesday 21 April.

An initiative by the South East Local Learning and Employment Network together with the City of Casey, the event attracts more than 2000 students each year. Expo founding member LINK Employment and Training general manager Terry Breheny said the big day was a critical one.

“The exposure over one day is really valuable for us to explain to the students all the trade options out there and to help them end up in wonderful careers. Many students are unaware of the opportunities available in trades,” Mr Breheny said.

“My view is that there is a big void in school students’ understanding of the VET (vocational education and training) sector and on the day we try to get students to look at a broader range of options rather than just university courses,” Mr Breheny said.

The day will enlighten students on trades such as carpentry, plumbing, tiling, bricklaying, painting and engineering, as well as hair and beauty.

“At our stand, we will present careers in automotive, carpentry, business and hairdressing and will have information and equipment available for students to try the trade and chat with our qualified trainers who currently train in those four industries,” Mr Breheny said.

The Australian Defence Force, Victoria Police, Chisholm Institute, VFA Learning and the Australian Brick and Blocklaying Federation will also be present on the day.

“We’ll have mannequins set up to get a taste of hairdressing and a laptop for the students to have a look at Excel for business, a Holden engine will be there and students can have a go at replacing spark plugs and checking oil,” Mr Breheny said.

“Students will also have the chance to make a wooden pencil case as a part of the carpentry section,” he said. LINK Employment and Training will visit schools in term three to discuss career options as the students decide on subjects for Years 11 and 12.

The expo will start at 9am and finish at 3pm at the Cranbourne Racecourse.

Rotary pulls in for car show CAR lovers have descended on Dandenong Showgrounds to raise about $30,000 for the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills.

Dandenong Valley All Holden Car Show co-ordinator Hans Van Dyk said the 12 April event was the biggest in its seven-year history.

“It’s very hard to count the cars but I’d guess about 600 in total,” he said.

“There was every model Holden that you could imagine.

“The number of people was on par with previous years. There were maybe 2000 people.”

Mr Van Dyk said Rotary Club of Narre Warren and several members from the new Casey Cardinia Rotaract Club helped to run the day.

“And thanks to our sponsors we didn’t have to spend anything on running the event,” he said.

“All of the money raised will

be able to go back into the community.”

Recipients will include Hand Brake Turn, Cornerstone Contact Centre, Dandenong Netball Centre, Big Brother Big Sister, Operation Newstart Casey and Dandenong, Life Education, Doveton Men’s Shed, Mossgiel Park Primary School, Teenage Road Accident Group, student assistance at Doveton College, the Herb Thomas Memorial Trust and Inner Wheel Cord Blood Research.

The show was originally designed as an outlet for local Commodore owners to get together and take pride in owning, maintaining and driving their cars in a responsible way.

Their Sunday clash was marred by foul troubles, sick guards and the Cougars firing out of the blocks quickly.

At one stage in the second term the Cavaliers trailed by 18, had two starters on four fours and were staring down the barrel of a huge loss.

Coach Tim Parker’s charges rallied through the third - restricting the free-flowing passes that let Keysborough guard Billie Lucas (29 points) rally to 23 by the main break.

The coach’s final act in hope was to bring back his crook shooting guard Sammie Johnson (4 points, 5 rebounds) to provide a spark. The gambit worked as the Cavaliers hit the front in the dying minutes - as Szalek hit a field goal to take a 55-54 lead.

From there in the last three minutes Keysborough regained control and pushed through the winning points at the foul line.

“These girls are great,” Casey coach Parker said.

“They’ll never stop fighting and unfortunately, having one of your players crook as a dog and unable to play the majority of the game and four on four fouls doesn’t help your cause.

“That’s something we’ll go back and work on and come out

ready to go next week.”

Falling out of the Division-2 women’s top four for the first time this season, the Casey Cavaliers will look to bounce back against North East on Saturday night at home from 7.30pm.

Saturday night wasn’t any better for the Cavaliers men as Stewart Baird’s brigade fell 6069 to Keilor.

Unable to match the Thunder through the first half, the Cavaliers struggled to catch up. Despite the best efforts of Lester Strong (21 points, 14 rebounds) and Dean Johnson (16 points, 13 rebounds), Casey would fail to match pace and succumbed to its third loss of the season.

The Cavs men sit sixth in the Big V Division 1 Watson conference and will take on Southern Peninsula - and former Cavaliers forward Jono Hawes - on Saturday night at Hillview Basketball Stadium, Rosebud from 7.30pm.

The only way is up

By JARROD POTTER THERE’S only one way forward for Casey Scorpions after a horror 2014 - and that’s up.

Without much to salvage following a five-win year which left the Scorpions second last only to the now-defunct Bendigo Gold - the club opted for renewal rather than maintaining the status quo.

Bringing in former St Kilda/Richmond player Justin Plapp to helm the Scorpions, the signs are all pointing upwards for Casey as it puts its darkest days behind it.

As the Demons strengthen this year so will the Scorpions as a number of Melbourne’s new recruits will get their chance to impress via the VFL ranks before pushing on to the AFL. Bernie Vince, Angus Brayshaw, Viv Michie and Dean Kent have all been pushing their case for Demons’ selection and a couple of local rookie-listed players are also in the mix for promotion to the main squad.

James Harmes, the Devon Meadows-dasher, flew through

his first full pre-season with the Demons. While he didn’t feature in any of Melbourne’s NAB Challenge matches, Harmes has beefed up in the gym and looks AFL-ready as he dukes it out through the Scorpions’ midfield.

It will be a home-town affair for another Scorpion as former Dandenong Stingray Mitch White runs out on to Casey Fields for Round 1.

White has been kicking about the half-back line for Casey and continues to impress ahead of season’s start after his selection at pick 20 in last year’s AFL Rookie Draft.

On the Scorpions list, captain Evan Panozza has received a solution to his backline loneliness, with the Scorpions’ top-brass recruiting former Gold Coast Sun Jack Hutchins.

Hutchins, 23, has all the attributes of a great utility and will help bolster the Casey spine as he can wheel-around and play forward as well as down back.

Another to join the VFL list is former Geelong Cats

premiership player Shannon Byrnes, who played for Melbourne last season before retiring. He will serve as one of Plapp’s main lieutenants as a playing assistant-coach.

Nate Paredes and Will Petropoulos have also been in the mix this pre-season and should get their chances early on the back of strong form.

The Scorpions’ VFL campaign starts Sunday from 2pm as they host the Frankston Dolphins.

Back to top form - Maddy Kowalski serves it up

By JARROD POTTER RISING star Maddy Kowalski was almost lost forever to tennis.

Kowalski, 17, from Doveton, almost turned her back for good on tennis after finishing her Bruce Cup commitments as a 12-year-old, but she decided to give it another crack.

After spending three years out of the game, the lingering thought of what she could have achieved spurred her to get back into the swing of the sport she once loved.

She has relished her time on court ever since and advanced into state consideration again as she

gained selection for the School Sport Victoria Pizzey Cup team.

“I just felt a lot of regret as I knew I could have been pretty good and I didn’t want to feel that anymore,” Kowalski said.

“It was hard to tell Mum and Dad, but then I came back when I was 15 and I think it’s better now.

“I’m more hungry than I was before, as I was pretty sick of it then, and now I feel a lot stronger after the break.”

With a power-packed baseline game defining Kowalski’s attacking style it was little surprise that the Doveton Tennis Club star was

picked to represent Victoria again.

She’s thrilled to return to the court for her state and hopes to excel in the national school sports under-18 tennis championships the same way she smashed past her Bruce Cup competition.

“I represented Victoria in grade six for Bruce Cup,” Kowalski said.

“It’s long - it goes for the whole week and you play a lot of matches against a lot of different people.

“I’m pretty sure I won all of my singles matches, lost a couple of my doubles matches and we came second to Queensland and that whole experience will help me a lot

this time.

“It’s pretty good to be part of the team again.”

Year 12 is also on her plate at Lyndale Secondary College to make for a hectic 2015 and after completing her studies Kowalski hopes to pursue her tennis fervently before starting university.

She wanted to thank her parents, family and Lyndale Secondary College for their support.

The Pizzey Cup tournament will be held in Hobart, Tasmania from 2-10 May.

By JARROD POTTER SOUTH East Juniors continue to dominate the Victoria Metro Youth Girls’ ranks with 11 from the local league picked to represent the state.

Up-and-coming women’s football stars including Beaconsfield’s SEJ Youth Girls’ premiership stars Lauren Hojnacki, Taylah Clayton, Georgia Fisher and Tyla Hanks.

Officer’s Taylah O’Hagan is also in the 27-player squad set to take on the rest of Australia early next month for a chance at regaining Vic Metro’s national title.

Vic Metro coach Wayne Siekman, who is also a Dandenong Stingrays TAC Cup assistant coach, said the 25-point loss grand final to Western Australia last year has motivated the girls and even with a new-look squad, the team was ready to step up and seize the championship back.

Goosey cool despite loss

By DAVID NAGEL NEW Cranbourne coach Simon Goosey is not hitting the panic-button despite his side’s 70-point loss to South East Football League powerhouse Narre Warren at Casey Fields on Saturday.

Goosey was disappointed with his side’s effort but realistic enough to acknowledge a new game plan will take time to bed in.

“We were really disappointed, but I’d be silly to think that it’s all going to happen overnight,” he said.

“We’ll get better and better, but we’ve got some work to do, there’s no doubt about that.”

After a tight opening, the Magpies piled on five goals in just nine minutes at the end of the first quarter to basically end the game as a contest. Ben Wragg, with five goals, and Matt Lee with three were pivotal up forward for the Maggies while Ben Giobbi, Jackson Parker and Matt Soroczynski provided some real pace out of defence.

Young ruckman Dylan Barfoot was competitive in the ruck for the Eagles while Luke Bee-Hugo and Max Gearon did their best to quell the Magpies midfield dominance. Gundefender Brandon Osborne had a great duel with Kerem Baskaya, keeping the dangerous full-forward to two goals for the afternoon.

The question mark hanging over Beaconsfield and its ability to back up after last year’s first premiership win in 10 years was answered at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday.

The Eagles answered emphatically too, with a gutsy, resilient, and typically team-orientated 11-point victory over arch-rival Berwick in the Battle of the Creek.

Golden girl returns with a bang

By DAVID NAGEL FORMER Beaconsfield junior Amy Heath has struck gold in her first game back at the club after the Eagles downed crosscreek rivals Berwick by nine goals on Saturday.

Heath, who started her netball in the Beacy Under-13s, has returned as coach after four years away from the club and said things had changed a little since the old days at Perc Allison Oval.

“Look, the move to the new facility is awesome, the facilities are great, but it was a bit of a shock because we have some great memories from the old courts at Beacy,” she said.

“But it’s all positive, the new place is fantastic and we’ll just have to create some new memories now.”

Beaconsfield’s win was built around a strong defensive effort from Kaela Hughes and Dani Cameron, a brilliant first-game effort from wingdefence Gabby Stinear and the return of star goaler Andi Dickson.

Pakenham pushed aside an unimpressive pre-season to score an impressive 86-point victory over Hampton Park at Toomuc Reserve.

“I don’t understand it, I think we’ve got the best team on the park since I’ve been here (three years) but we sort of feel like people have written us off already and we don’t know why,” Lions’ coach Steve O’Bryan said.

Whistling up a storm IT’S NOT often one of Australia’s premier umpires takes a training session, but for the south east’s up-and-coming umpires, Wednesday’s run around in the rain turned out to be their best yet of the season.

Trading his usual stomping grounds in the AFL for Fountain Gate’s Max Pawsey Reserve, AFL umpire Ben Ryan came out to run the best-andbrightest of the South East Juniors (SEJ) umpiring brigade through their paces.

Whistles at the ready, the umpires learned from the umpiring veteran, with 67 AFL matches under his belt, as he instructed the juniors on everything from following the action around the ground, throw-ins and ball-ups to what it takes to become an elite umpire.

South East Juniors’ Umpiring Manager Rod Hamilton said the umpires learned a tremendous amount from Ryan.

“Ben Ryan is fantastic and he interacted well with the kids,” Hamilton said.

“For the kids - to see an AFL umpire in real life - it’s a great thrill.

“Even in the pouring rain he’s running around with the boys and girls and answered all their questions.”

“Everyone was really impressed with him,” Hamilton said.

“He started at Rockhampton - and AFL is a fifth sport up there - and he emphasised that if you dream and continue to live it, hopefully the success comes.

“He told us he runs 14-16 kilometres a game… I think that was the biggest surprise for the kids - just how much work they have to do.”

With around 200 junior umpires in the South East Juniors ranks, the league is burgeoning throughout the ranks, but is always looking for new umpires of any age or gender to join up and blow the whistle to support the sport.

By JARROD POTTER CANTERING over the reigning VWFL Division-1 Premiers, Cranbourne flexed its muscles and showed the competition there’s a lot to be worried about when they face the Eagles.

After booting their one-and-only goal in the first term, the Sharks were chummed up by the Eagles especially livewire forwards Bianca Jakobsson (three goals) and Hayley Wildes (two goals).

Cranbourne ran in waves, passed exceptionally and whenever the ball switched hands, were there to packmaul the Sharks.

The improvement in the Cranbourne group - after a mixed 2014 season - is stark as players have returned and the step-up among the remaining Eagles is easily evident.

Ash Fennell has returned to VWFL after a year out of the game and was one of the Eagles’ key hitup forwards and ruck combinations along with Cara Moody.

Jodi Lock, Corrine Cullis, Kirsty Roche and Laura Robinson also returned to the south-east football scene and impressed across the day as all Eagles soared against the lacklustre Sharks.

Also impressing across the defensive-50 was Chloe McMillan - who repelled countless St Kilda chances from her post at centrehalf-back.

“It’s the stuff we’ve worked on all pre-season and a full pre-season with the girls is paying off too.”

“That’s really good - our rotations worked today (Sunday), moved through the centre well kicking goals - that’s what you want.”

Smith - who took the reins from former Melbourne footballer Shaun Smith at the end of last year - was

excited to start his coaching career on a high note with a 95-point demolition.

“As a team that’s as good as you get,” Smith said.

“Reigning premiers done by nearly 100 points - that’s not a bad start.

“We’ve got plenty to work on but we’ve just got to keep going and improve every week.”

The only downside to the emphatic victory was Cranbourne’s forward line finishing.

With 14 behinds kicked, from a range of easy enough shots and

chances, the Eagles’ score line could have been ramped up even further.

Rocketing to the top of VWFL Division-1 ladder - with a whopping 1155.56 per cent - Cranbourne will return home to Casey Fields this weekend to face Darebin (Division 1) and Deer Park (Division 3) from midday Sunday.

Also starting their campaign this week will be Endeavour Hills, with its Division 3 facing Bayswater away and East Division against AFL Gippsland at Gormandale.

A simple, impassioned plea from Keysborough coach Ryan Goodes delivered to his Burra battlers seemed to pay off as the visitors claimed a 27-point triumph over Doveton Eagles.

Their first match in SFL Division 2 was no walk in the park for the Burra as the Eagles knocked them around throughout a back-and-forth second half.

Heading into the final break four-points down, following a threegoal run by Doveton Eagles before the last break, Goodes roared at his charges in the huddle to knuckle down and hit the scoreboard.

back and played as the third-man up across half-back and found able support streaming the ball out of defence from Matt Burnett and Luke Damato.

The Burra seized back the advantage after Geoff Humphreys hit up Jake Dunn (three goals) lace out before Tyson King (four goals) lived up to his moniker, making the hard work seem regal in a starring forward performance.

Kicking the last four goals, Keysborough emphatically finished off its first SFL match in style to kick away 16.14 (110) to Doveton Eagles’ 13.5 (85).

Goodes was pleased to see a plethora of Burra wins on Saturday as the reserves and thirds also notched wins.

“I didn’t think we were playing the way we wanted to play - that’s not the sort of coach I am, but some-

times they need to get going and at the end of the day it worked,” Goodes said.

“The supporter base is here now, with 60 blokes on the track and three teams that came away with a win, that’s an achievement in itself.”

The Eagles were well led by Corrie Wilson (four goals), Rob Kreskas and Enayte Samadi.

Keysborough has its first home match in the SFL as it takes on Murrumbeena while Doveton Eagles head to Caulfield.

Amstel scrapes through AMSTEL hosted a determined Melbourne Airport at home last Sunday and despite some dominant performances just scraped home with 4 wins to 3.

George Johnson was sent out at 7 to get the ball rolling and he did just that, 7 up through 7 holes. After missing a gettable putt on the par 5 8th to go 8 up his opponent gave a fist pump and happily declared he couldn’t lose 10 and 8, 8 and 7 -- the final margin got Amstel on the board first.

Leigh Bailey seemed to find more bad breaks than good ones and lost 2 down while captain Brett Greenough had a day with the flat stick that is best forgotten and lost 3 and 2. This left Jayson Tekopua’s match at 5 the pivotal game. Jason made the turn 1 down but fought back to hit the lead on the 16th. On the 17th, he made a great bunker save to halve the hole and on 18, after finding trouble with his 2nd shot, hit a brilliant 6 iron to 5 feet and then sank the birdie putt to win 2 up and put the result in Amstel’s favour.

It was a great day with some terrific golf being played, and it was really tremendous to see a quite a number of club members out caddying and even more supporting the team, including junior member Kassie Boorer. Special thanks to the bar staff who went above and beyond with the meal service and the pro Shop staff and managers who ensured the day ran like clockwork.

Amstel find themselves 2nd on the ladder with 2 games remaining, equal on points with Sandhurst and undefeated Eastern (who have had a bye.) The club heads to Yarrambat next Sunday to play the home team in a must-win game.
