Birthday tragedy

Tragedy has hit the Upper Yarra with the death of another young person on local roads. 137551 more police patrols on the road.

A BIRTHDAY celebration turned to tragedy in a heartbeat in Milners Road at Launching Place on Friday night.

The scene that greeted nearby residents and emergency services, just after 11pm, was chaotic and horrible.

Upper Yarra 21-year-old, Charlie Robertson, died at the scene and two friends, a 22-year-old male from Three Bridges and a 22-year-old woman from Croydon, are fighting for their lives in hospital.

Two other friends from the local area, and the driver from Patterson Lakes, escaped with minor injuries.

Detective Sergeant Mark Amos of the Major Collision Investigation Unit said the group had left the Wesburn Hotel and were travelling from Yarra Junction on the back road to Launching Place when the driver over-corrected on a bend and rolled the vehicle.

“Potentially the vehicle has rolled a number of times,” Det Sgt Amos said.

He said potentially all six people in the five-seater four-wheel-drive were ejected, with a ‘good chance’ they weren’t wearing seatbelts.

“The causes we are looking at are alcohol and speed,” he said, but added the investigators would also be keeping an open mind on other causes such as distraction, poor behaviour and drugs.

Andrew Swann who lives within metres of the bend where the driver lost control described it as a “shocking corner”.

He and his wife, a nurse, rushed to help when they heard the crash.

Mr Swann said it was a devastating scene, but that emergency services arrived quickly.

He said the corner was notoriously bad.

“We’ve been here for four years and had four crashes in that time.

“So many people lose control there and that’s not even counting the many near misses.”

Unveiling of their honour

By JESSE GRAHAM AN AVENUE of Honour commemorating Healesville’s Diggers will be unveiled this Friday, replacing the town’s old monument in the lead-up to the Anzac Centenary.

On Friday 17 April at 2pm, Casey MP Tony Smith will join members of the Healesville RSL and residents at Le Pine Funerals on Maroondah Highway for the unveiling of the town’s new Avenue of Honour signage.

RSL Commemorations Officer, Bob Gannaway, said the original avenue of honour was a tribute to the town’s founding families, as well as Diggers from the area who served in World War I, and stretched from the BP service station site down to past the Terminus Hotel in a straight line.

The avenue, still featuring many of the original trees, is now significantly shorter, but will feature newly-made signboards at either end, emblazoned with names from the original honour board that now resides at the RSL. The new signboards were funded by the Casey Centenary of Anzac Committee, through Mr Smith, and will be easily accessible for visitors and residents alike.

Mr Gannaway said the signposts would be mounted on trees by an arborist and placed next to the road, with plenty of parking spaces nearby.

Sadly, the Yarra Valley has lost three of its prominent and respected ‘elders’ and community workers in recent weeks.

Bruce Oliver from Gruyere was a dedicated CFA volunteer with Wandin and Gruyere brigades who was also involved in Mont De Lancey, the Lilydale Historical Society, the Yarra Valley Steam Machinery Society and other organisations over his life-

time. Bruce, 83, died on 23 March.

Coldstream stalwart, Valda (Val) Sheehan was also a passionate local historian who was a strong advocate for improvements to the township she loved. Val was also a member of the Lilydale Historicial Society and author of several books on the Coldstream/Yering district.

She was a loyal supporter of the local football and cricket clubs.

Val died on 27 March at 87 years of age.

Athol Egeberg served the Healesville community as a Shire of Healesville councillor, including a period as shire president.

He served in World War II, in the Citizens’ Military Forces (now the Army Reserve) and in Korea and had a long and distinguished association with Healesville RSL, including time as president.

Athol died on 3 April, aged 89 years.

Wanton vandalism charges

By KATH GANNAWAY THREE Warburton teenagers will face criminal damage charges after a $25,000 vandalism rampage through the town in March.

As many as 14 shops and other buildings were spray painted or had front windows etched in the attack on 25 March.

Warburton police said the attack took place in the middle of the night on the first week of school holidays.

Senior Constable Rob Firns said the

three people between 15 and 18 and had been identified from CCTV footage and would be charged.

Owners of shops targeted in the attack, and others involved in the tourism industry which is the life-blood of the town were shocked at the extent, and the impact on the town, coming as it did before the high-peak Easter longweekend.

The cost to businesses to replace windows, and cover increased insurance costs as a result, is also significant.

Peta Godenzi, president of business and tourism group, Warburton Valley CEDA, labelled the attack as wanton vandalism.

Ms Godenzi said in addition to the cost to individual businesses, it created a negative impression of Warburton.

“It impacts as a tourist town and doesn’t create a good impression of this community,” she said.

“We have people come every weekend, and particularly over Easter, and it does not look good.”

Ms Godenzi said Warburton as a town had a strong graffiti policy and worked well with Yarra Ranges Council to ensure that graffiti was removed quickly.

Warburton Newsagency was one of the businesses whose glass window was etched, and owner Shan Lonappan said they were still working out what was the best and most affordable way to deal with it.

He said he was working with about 10 other shops to get quotations for fixing these damages which would

By KATH GANNAWAY UPPER Yarra Valley Historical Society president Tom O’Meara has thanked everyone involved in making the 2015 new-look Crank-up event at Yarra Junction a great success.

“The event is successful because of the hard work of the UYVHS volunteers and the support of other volunteers and local communities,” said Mr O’Meara following the event which drew good crowds

and lots of positive feedback.

Mr O’Meara said fine weather over the weekend of 28 and 29 March added to the enjoyment of the activities on offer.

“While the first appearance of the immaculately presented hot rods from various clubs attracted many admirers, old favourites such as the noble draught horses, the thumping stationary engines, the powerful steamrollers, the busy blacksmiths as well as hay bal-

ers and bale grabs drew hundreds of impressed visitors,” he said.

Children were asked to suggest a name for the dragon being made in the blacksmith’s shop as well as enjoying the old-fashioned delights of the children’s playground and toy room.

Briefly Unlicensed drink driver nabbed A FOOTY trip ended with an upcoming court date for a Woori Yallock man, who was caught drink driving and speeding without a licence. The 62-year-old man was pulled over by Casey Highway Patrol officers after drivers on the Princes Freeway in Berwick called triple-zero to report him driving erratically at 7.50pm on Saturday 11 April.

When police officers caught up with the man, he was travelling at 102km/h in an 80km/h zone.

He then blew 0.151 during a breath test more than three times the legal limit, and was found to be unlicensed.

The driver told police he had returned from a trip to watch a suburban football match.

He will be charged on summons with traffic offences, and will face court at a later date.

Triple-zero result A DIRT-BIKE rider doing burnouts in front of the Reefton Hotel will face hoon-related charges after police nabbed him on 28 March.

Senior Constable Rob Firns said police received multiple calls through triple-zero and intercepted the 46-year-old Garfield man as he was doing burn-outs.

He will be charged on summons with drink driving and hoon-related offences.

Senior Constable Firns said triple-zero is the most efficient way to let patrolling units know of incidents that require police attendance and often enable police to respond immediately.

AN Eastern Region police officer has been fined after being caught drink driving in Lilydale on Friday 10 April.

The off-duty police officer, a female constable, was pulled over at a booze bus on Maroondah Highway after 10pm on the Friday night.

She blew 0.062 on an evidentiary breath test, and as a result received a $442 infringement notice and lost 10 demerit points.

The Professional Standards Command has been notified of the incident.

AS the local Member for Eildon in the Victorian Parliament, I am always involved in supporting local volunteer organisations in the Yarra Ranges community - home to all types of volunteer groups responsible for crucial social tasks.

It’s hard to think of any sector in

the community that isn’t touched by volunteering and to which volunteers make a vital contribution.

Volunteers provide support and care for the elderly, they look after our beautiful natural environment through Landcare groups, they are responsible for running our local junior and senior sporting clubs and, at the times when the community is most vulnerable, our emergency services volunteers in the CFA and SES are there to protect us.

Volunteering also makes a major economic contribution to Victoria and to the Yarra Ranges.

Sauce spices it up

By JESSE GRAHAM A YARRA Valley sauce competition is calling on residents who are passionate about pasta, chuffed about chutney or find relish riveting to put out their best produce.

Yarra Valley Gateway Estateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual Sauce Competition has returned for its second year, with sauce enthusiasts asked to come up with their best tomato-based recipe.

Gateway Estateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Brett Spurling said the competition was returning after a strong turnout last year, with nearly 50 sauces, chutneys and relishes submitted to the Coldstream business to be judged by a panel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The judges said the standard of entries was fantastic,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Spurling said.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were really pleased with the result - weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hoping for the same again this year, if not more.â&#x20AC;?

The rules of the competition are simple - fill a 500-millilitre jar with a tomato sauce, relish, chutney or pasta sauce that is tomato-based and made this season.

Though the event is based in the Yarra Valley, Mr Spurling encouraged residents in the Dandenong Ranges to get involved and submit their sauces, too.

All entrants, from special family recipes, to experimental first-tries or commercial products are able to be entered, though Mr Spurling said that entries must be submitted blind. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want the jars delivered with the manufacturerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s details on them,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Entries must include a name, phone number, email address and a product description (e.g. sauce, relish, chutney or pasta sauce) on the jar.

The first prize is a $150 Yarra Valley hamper, while second prize is a dinner for two at Rustik at Gladysdale Bakehouse.

Entry to the competition is free, and all entries must be submitted by Sunday 19 April.

Fiskville closed for good: Mick

By KATH GANNAWAY YARRA Ranges firefighter Mick Tisbury has commended the State Government on closing the CFA’s Fiskville training facility for good.

Minister for Emergency Services, Jane Garrett, announced the closure on Thursday, 26 March, following tests that showed high levels of the toxic chemical PROS around the fire training area and in an area where the chemical had not been previously detected.

The CFA board unanimously recommended the closure after receiving the most recent results of more

than 500 tests.

The Mail reported earlier in March that Mr Tisbury, an MFB firefighter and executive member of the United Firefighters’ Union, had been pushing for a thorough investigation into the use of toxic materials and water contamination for three years.

He welcomed the temporary closure of Fiskville at the time, but last week expressed relief that the government had acted decisively and quickly on the latest test results.

Those results did show that the drinking water and showers were clear

of contamination, but that other areas were not.

A statement from the Minister’s office said tests showed the PFOS levels ranged from less than 1 microgram per litre to as high as 50 micrograms per litre against international guidelines for safe levels of the chemical in drinking water of 0.2 micrograms, and 4 micrograms for non-drinking water.

Ms Garrett said despite previous clean-ups, Fiskville remained a dangerous site which could no longer operate safely.

She said the closure marked the end

of a ‘dark chapter’ in Victoria’s firefighting services.

“While we are relieved that the drinking water is safe, the ongoing discovery of contamination at Fiskville means it can no longer operate as a training ground,” she said.

Mr Tisbury said he had expected permanent closure, but was surprised that the decision had been made while the Parliamentary Inquiry into Fiskville was underway.

“I wasn’t privilege to the test results that came back at such a high level, but they didn’t surprise me. I’ve seen oth-

ers that were even higher,” he said.

He commended the government, saying they had put the lives of peple ahead of other interests.

“This government has acted quickly, and correctly.

“I am sure that once people start hearing and seeing the evidence (to the inquiry) they will be thankful for this government for doing what the previous government should have done,” he said.

Submissions to the inquiry closed last week and hearings are scheduled to start in May.

Volunteers dumped on

By KATH GANNAWAY DUMPING is costing Healesville opportunity shop thousands of dollars each year.

But that’s not the worst of it.

The disgusting rubbish that Healesville Salvation Army volunteers have had to sort through in the past few months is incomprehensible.

“It goes beyond even household rubbish,” said Maureen Garlick, who with husband Bluey shifts ute-loads of rubbish on a weekly basis from the Healesville shop, and the bin next to the Salvation Army Hall in Harker Street.

It’s not unusual to see soiled nappies in rubbish bags dumped in the bush, but no-one would expect to find that - and worse - in bags left under the guise of helping charity organisations raise funds for their communities.

“Sometimes you open a bag

of clothes and it just reeks. We can’t use it and we have to get rid of it,” Maureen said.

Signs at local opportunity shops advising people not to leave goods, or not to leave specific items such as electrical goods and furniture, are ignored as an easy and cheap way to dispose of unwanted goods.

Healesville Salvation Army Officer, Sarah Eldridge, says it’s a problem that all thrift shops have to deal with and added that money paid out to dispose of rubbish and unsaleable items is money that is not available to spend in the local community.

Elaine Dossor, co-ordinator of the Lions Den Opportunity Shop in Healesville said they did tip runs at least once a fortnight.

“We do a lot of burn-offs when you’re allowed to ... if it burns, we’ll burn it, but basically anything we have to pay for impacts on the community,” she

said. Both organisations get 12 tip vouchers each year, but say they go nowhere near covering the amount of rubbish they have to dispose of.

Both women agree that what is trash and what is treasure can be subjective.

“If it’s not something you and your loved ones would buy, don’t donate it, but having said that, we can still make money from something like bedding where perhaps the elastic has gone for rags,” Sarah Eldridge said.

Jeans with tears and holes are borderline acceptable ... if they’re trendy tears!

“You see things come in that you think would never sell, and they’re the first things to go, but that’s not rubbish,” she said.

“Volunteers give their time in these shops to help others ... they deserve better than having to deal with disgusting rubbish.

Letters Get a move on YARRA Ranges Council and the Yarra Glen Tennis Club have already spent thousands of dollars restoring a heritage clubhouse, but there is no electricity or water connected.

There are also two asphalt tennis courts that are sinking; and vegetation upgrades along the eastern, western and southern side of six of the courts.

The most frequently used playing surfaces are clay court numbers two, three and four - sitting north of the unfinished heritage clubhouse - and south of the neighbouring wire fence.

Efforts this summer to remove dangerous foliage overgrowing the three clay courts began, sputtered, resumed and is now a complete mess on the residential ‘other side of the fence’.

Between two wire separation fences, about one metre apart, five drought-stricken prickly trees are dead or dying.

The contractor has appeared four times onsite and performed cutting work twice.

He has lopped and chopped timber out of the way of sportspeople, leaving heavily encumbered branches growing north through the wire fence onto the next door property.

The contractor has cut up lots of timber but has not removed it, leaving a big mess scattered around on the neighbour’s ground.

I registered a Yarra Ranges Shire complaint on 26 February, 2015.

Yarra Glen Tennis Club and Yarra Ranges Council need to expedite completion of this job.

A new, all-timber high fence with an additional green cloth light screen is needed to stop the light spillage and verbal noise annoying neighbours.

Dangerous corner IN RESPONSE to Kath Gannaway’s article on the dangerous corner near Graceburn Aqueduct (Mail, 8 April), I am enraged by this news.

My husband had an accident at this corner in early January this year.

Four emergency vehicles attended.

Fortunately, my husband was not injured.

I visited the Healesville police station later only to be told that unless someone was injured or killed, they were not required to forward a report on to the relevant authorities.

I placed an online report to VicRoads.

I received an email in return asking for further details, which I produced.

I received a further report, ‘responding to my inquiry’.

Since that time, we have become aware of at least five drivers from Alexandra alone who have come to grief on that particular corner.

If all ‘minor accidents’ (in VicRoads’ terms) were logged, it would become apparent this particular strip of road is dangerous and, as their mission statement is to provide safe arterial roads, VicRoads do not appear to be carrying out their duty of care.

When does their duty of care begin?

When 20 people have had an accident on that corner?

When four people have died on that corner?

When emergency staff have been called out 100 times?

When the cost of emergency responses reaches $30,000?

When unsuspecting drivers have paid excesses of $10,000 or even more?

It’s about time VicRoads were brought to task. With winter approaching, I worry that when members of my family travel this road (which they do often), it doesn’t matter that they are extremely careful as the driver coming from the opposite direction may not be aware of any danger, which means they are all put at risk.

Drivers who have ended up ‘over the side’ have had their confidence diminished, their bank balances reduced and their faith in authorities carrying out their duties undermined.

I’m afraid I do not have a copy of my first notification to VicRoads but I do have the second email which my husband sent to VicRoads attached.

I applaud Kath’s effort to highlight this dangerous ‘blackspot’ and hope that it brings pressure to bear on VicRoads to actually rectify the problem.

Secrecy is disturbing WHY the secrecy regarding the sale of the Warburton Caravan Park?

I think this is disgraceful behaviour by the council.

We’re told the matter was a ‘confidential item’ on their agenda.

‘Confidential item’ are weasel words: but meaning what?

Why can’t we know?

Is there something underhand going on?

Some corruption involved?

Or is it something they know would incur the

displeasure of Warburton residents if revealed?

Why can’t we know why the UYCE is not a preferred tenderer?

What are the criteria for determining a successful tenderer?

And why can’t we know even that?

It disturbs me the proceeds of the sale will not be earmarked for the benefit of Warburton; but for the whole municipality.

After all, the caravan park was not started and developed by the whole municipality, but by the Warburton community.

It’s down to road safety NO matter which roads you’re travelling on in our beautiful state, there are many reasons to drive carefully.

But for those who drive on our roads in the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges areas, the need to be vigilant is even more vital.

While one could be forgiven for getting swept up in the beautiful surrounding sceneries, it’s important to maintain a steady level of concentration.

Simply, this is because the driving conditions can change in an instant.

You never know what potential hazard is lurking around the countless bends; be it a fallen tree, a dead animal, or a tighterthan-expected curve.

The issue was highlighted this week when a driver had a lucky escape after a crash on the Maroondah Highway at Healesville.

In this case, police said a combination of rain and oil was believed to be behind the crash.

Also making it difficult is the fact many blackspots exist on many of the region’s arterials, which many in our community believe need to be addressed quickly.

While not trying to pinpoint any particular corner, or stretch of road, we need to be mindful that these blackspots do exist.

On this point, it’s disappointing to see the number of drivers who showed disregard for other road users over the

Easter weekend.

According to police statistics, there were an incredible 211 speeding offences in the Yarra Ranges alone.

Compare this to the Cardinia area, where there were 77 speeding offences, which is still way too high.

That figure is heartbreaking.

These figures are compounded by the fact there were seven drink-drivers and four drug-drivers caught on Yarra Ranges roads.

Not only are these people breaking the law, they are endangering the lives of other road users.

In our view, no-one has that right.

Stay safe on our roads.

Warburton Caravan Park booked out for Easter WARBURTON Camping and Caravan Park is proving to be one of the best tourist attractions in the town.

While guest houses are feeling the pinch, the park is attracting more and more holidaymakers to town. A record crowd is expected to camp at the park this Easter. A week ago every available powerpoint along the river bank was booked.

There are 54 powerpoints at the park and no doubt many campers will double up with leads to obtain the use of power. Six years ago the park’s annual income amounted to 400 pounds.

This year’s revenue will be in excess of 10,000 pounds, which goes to prove that the park has been a gilt-edged investment for the Warburton Advancement League over the past 10 years.

The park is also attracting regular Sunday picnic parties to the town.

Round up WARBURTON lost another of its oldest identities with the death of Mr Gilbert Fox, at the Freemasons Hospital in East Melbourne last Saturday.

Over the years Mr Fox has lived a fairly secluded life at Warburton, his three main interests freemasonry, the waterworks trust and work at the garage which he established in town. His funeral took place at Wesburn Cemetery on Tuesday.

Thefts of Guns and Swords YARRA Junction police were anxious to obtain any information, that may help them solve a series of mysterious robberies at Gladysdale on two occasions at the home of Mr and Mrs Brennan.

The swords are of great sentimental value as one was Mrs Brennan’s father’s cavalry sword from World War One.

War effort rings a Bell

By KATH GANNAWAY GULF Station in Yarra Glen was the source of two very different and valuable contributions to the war effort in WWI. “Parcels From Home - A Heritage Festival Event” on Saturday 18 April, will celebrate the contribution of the farm’s Bell family, and commemorate Gulf Station’s connection to the battlefields of WWI. The Bells supplied waler horses to the Imperial Forces and held working bees on the

farm to make various items for the Red Cross to distribute to the Australian soldiers.

They even put up one of their waler ponies as a raffle prize to raise funds.

The festival, set among the heritage buildings and gardens of Gulf Station will bring the Bell’s war effort to life.

Activities, running from 11am to 4pm, will include house and property tours, exhibits and demonstrations of skills, music, local vendors and horses, including the famous

Gulf Station Clydesdale team and a waler.

The Gulf Station volunteers will be sizzling sausages and there is plenty of space to spread out a picnic lunch and enjoy the attractions and activities.

Yarra Glen RSL will be selling Anzac tokens throughout the day.

In fact, while Wild Cattle Creek Estate was developing its vineyard, the winery produced their earlier vintages using the produce from Langbrook Estate.

In 2006, Wild Cattle Creek Estate created wines from their own vines and have established a high standard for their vintages, adopting quality and value as the main objective.

Today, the group takes great pride in what they have created and have kept as close to traditional wine making techniques as possible, including the harvesting by hand on both estates.

“Our estate wines are sourced from our own vineyards,” Kevin said.

By LARISSA KUZEFF MOTORCYCLISTS are encouraged to ‘travel happy’ as part of a new awareness campaign to address road rage.

The new VicRoads awareness campaign Travel Happy - Share the Road is focused on the effects that mood and driving behaviour can have on road safety.

VicRoads’ Director of Vehicle and Road Use Policy James Holgate said the campaign, which would feature a series of events, would help road users to highlight behaviour change.

“Unhappy road users are more likely to be aggressive and lack compassion for others. This can lead to frustration and anger which can lead to risky behaviour,” he said.

In a recent survey of 1000 road users conducted by VicRoads, 84 per cent of motorcyclists felt the behaviour of others on the road impacted their mood.

Mr Holgate said drivers and motorcyclists alike needed to be aware of each other’s safety when sharing the road.

“Other road users should be mindful of motorcyclists. Just because you

don’t see a motorcyclist doesn’t mean one isn’t nearby, so use your indicators when changing lanes,” he said.

“A quick head check to ensure a motorcyclist isn’t in your blind spot will ensure everyone has a safer journey.”

The survey results indicated that motorcyclists would be happier on the road if other users would keep an eye out for them when changing lanes and intersections.

But Mr Holgate said motorcyclists, too, have responsibility to share the space which would also help them improve their own safety.

“Motorcyclists can make other road users happier by indicating before changing lanes and maintaining a safe space between themselves and other road users - they can improve their own safety by being alert, scanning ahead and using mirrors to avoid the unexpected,” he said.

VicRoads’ will join with a number of road safety partners throughout the campaign to help change the culture of negative behaviour that exists on our roads.

HUNDREDS of drivers flouting the law in the valley over the Easter long weekend were busted by police, after officers swarmed onto the roads for Operation Crossroads.

The operation ran for five days over the Easter long weekend earlier this month, in an attempt by Victoria Police to address high levels of road trauma in the holiday periods.

In the Yarra Ranges Police Service Area (PSA) alone, 211 drivers were caught speeding, while 57 unregistered vehicles were detected.

Police caught four people driving with drugs in their system over the weekend and seven driving while over the legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit of .05 per cent for fully-licensed drivers or .00 per cent for learner drivers or P-platers.

Warburton police Senior Constable Rob Firns told the Mail that two of these drink-drivers were caught in the Upper Yarra area, both driving with over twice the legal limit of alcohol in their systems.

“They will face court, and they are facing in vicinity of 10-12 months loss of licence, as well as potentially a significant fine,” he said.

Despite the odd driver caught flouting the law, Sen Const Firns said police were pleased with the behaviour of most drivers in the area.

One car was impounded during the operation in the Yarra Ranges, while three people were caught using their phones while driving - 22 drivers were found to be driving unlicensed, five were found to be driving while disqualified or suspended and 12 were caught disobeying signs or traffic signals.

Statewide, over 12,000 offences were detected in Operation Crossroads, with speeding drivers (4895 caught) and unregistered vehicles (1268 detected) making up more than half of that number.

On Victoria’s roads, four people also lost their lives over the Easter long weekend.

As of Friday 10 April, the road toll stands at 77 deaths since 1 January one death less than the same time last year.

Clark milestone as Demons light up

By PETER DOUGLAS POWELLTOWN Football Club favourite Andrew Clark celebrated an amazing milestone over the weekend, as he turned out for his 300th match for the club.

Incredibly, he has also played at league rivals Woori Yallock and Warburton, so has played more than just 300 games with his beloved Demons.

Clark arrived at the club from Woori Yallock in the early 1990s and has been a constant figure at the club for well over 20 years.

Past president of Powelltown, John Hadger, said Clark had been a loyal footballer and club servant.

“He stayed until we folded about 2000 and played at Warburton with brother-in-law Darren Summers,” he said.

“But he came back when we started again and has played again up until now.

“Andrew is also a league life member.”

To add to the occasion, it was also the first time the club played under lights, thanks to the new facilities at the ground.

Yarra Ranges Shire mayor Maria McCarthy, along with life members Doug Cole and Lorraine Green, flicked the switch for the four lights.

The clash with Yarra Junction, which was played for the Jeff Cole Trophy, was played

in terrific spirit.

The result was a draw, which some believe is a first between the two clubs.

The final score was Powelltown 16.7 (103) to Yarra Junction’s 15.13(103).

In a tight first half, Powelltown went into the break with a one-point advantage, while the third quarter saw Yarra Junction break the shackles, booting five goals to two.

Powelltown fought back and booted six goals to three, but the siren ended while the scores were tied.

The medal for best player on the ground went to Powelltown playing coach, Barry McDonald.

Life member Lorraine Green switches on the lights for the Demons’ opening match of the season.

Popular Demon Andrew Clark is chaired off the ground after his milestone achievement.

Excitement was high in the groundpounding V8 action, but Pearson proved too strong in the inaugural Victorian Late Model Racing season, beating Chevy Edwards and Mick Hetherington who finished strong. Pearson, from the Healesville Directional Drilling team, set the pace early in heat 1, while setting a one-lap time of 17.078s, winning by .605 of a second from Hetherington.

Wandin and Olinda-Ferny Creek got their seasons off to a flying start; while in netball, Yarra Glen surprised Olinda as Wandin stamped its mark.

THIS game started evenly with no side able to break away in the first half. Healesville did lead at half time by a slender 11 points. The third term was where it was won as Healesville made every post a winner. They played direct football and it paid dividends as they booted 7.1 for the quarter. Monbulk had its chances but a wasteful 2.6 put them six goals behind at the last change.

Healesville continued its good form in the last, adding another six goals to four to run out eight-goal winners.

WARBURTON MILLGROVE 15.14 (104) D UPWEY TECOMA 13.12 (90)

UPWEY looked the better side early as they jumped out to a 22-point lead at quarter time, but Warby dug deep in the second quarter, booting five goals to three, to reduce the margin to just six points at the main break.

The second half was a great battle, but it was the run and carry from Warburton that really troubled Upwey. Warby went to the last change with an eight-point buffer. The Warby of previous seasons would have dropped this game but even though the scores were close they steadied when required and looked a more polished side than Upwey. They deserved the hard-fought 14-point victory.

THIS game started even enough with Woori leading by just four points at quarter time but Woori got their game going in the second term, booting six goals to one to take a 33-point lead into half time. Woori extended that lead to an insurmountable 50 points by the last change and this game was all over bar the shouting. The last quarter did see Belgrave outscore Woori by nine points, but in the end it was a dominant performance by Woori who once again are going to be a force this season.

OLINDA FERNY CREEK 29.20 (194) D YARRA GLEN 9.7 (61)

THE first quarter was a competitive affair with Olinda leading by 21 points at the first change, but after that it was all one-way traffic.

Olinda booted nine goals to two in the second term to put the game well and truly beyond doubt as they went into half time with a 65-point lead.

The second half was more of the

same as Olinda went on its merry way; they added another 14 goals to their total while Yarra Glen added just four. Olinda had 16 separate goal scorers for the day in what was a dominant display.

WANDIN only led by 21 points at half-time, but really should have been a lot further ahead. Wandin certainly straightened up in the third term, as they played direct footy and looked unstoppable. Wandin booted nine goals for the quarter while holding Mount Evelyn to just three behinds. The last quarter was still all Wandin as they kept extending its lead. They booted 4.9 to 1.1 to win by 105 points and in reality should have won by even more which is a scary thought.
