BRODIE Carmichael was laid up recovering from a serious crash five years ago when he had the thought to combine two of the most dangerous sports in the world to create an actionpacked and interactive live show.

Now his dream will hit the turf and come flying through the skies this April.

Bikes and Bulls will showcase some of Australia’s top cowboys and toughest bulls as Aussie FMX greats dangle off their bikes 50ft above the rodeo arena.

Mr Carmichael and Bikes and Bulls partner and commentator Jed Townes and their team of six bike riders and eight bull riders have been rehearsing since November, with the youngest bull rider being 15 years old.

“It’s an action sports event but it’s not all action, it’s very interactive with audiences which makes it different from other adrenaline shows, you can have a laugh and you don’t have to like bulls or bikes to have an awesome time,” Mr Townes said.

They have been working hard to organise the show, building their own infrastructure and visiting local schools.

“We have dealers, valuers and buyers. It’s a gathering of people with a shared interest.”

The show also catered to younger rock enthusiasts, offering visiting children a lucky dip.

Dawn said the swap offered something for every collector or appreciator of rocks and gems.

“It’s an event where people can come to sell or trade, but we do get a lot of people who are interested in coming to see the gemstones.”

The Antiques and Collectables Club is already looking forward to next year’s event.

Winter woollies’ warm Woodenbong welcome

By JOYCE MARSH, WOODENBONG CORRESPONDENT A MORNING tea and public showing of rugs, scarves, beanies and handcrafted items was held at the Catholic Church, Woodenbong, which displayed the dedicated and talented handiwork of a group of 20 craftswomen who come from Woodenbong, Urbenville, Ballina and Sydney.

The knitters and crocheters had produced 42 rugs which were much admired

for their variety and quality.

All the completed items are sent to Sister Denise Laverty of the Sisters of Mercy, Brisbane to be distributed to the needy, and are usually all gone in two weeks. A total of $140 in donations were raised by those who attended the showing, which will be used to buy wool for the future creations.

A very big ‘thankyou’ to all those involved for such a worthy and charitable effort.

GEMSTONES and antiques stole the show at the Warwick Rock Swap over the weekend.

The rainy weather didn’t deter a group of keen collectors from attending the annual event, held at the Warwick Showgrounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Art, stamps and antique china were among the other valuables brought to the show by dealers coming from as far away as the Sunshine Coast.

Organiser Dawn Hole of Darling Downs Antiques and Collectables Club said the swap enjoyed a significant turnout despite the rainy weather.

Brigade benefits from ball

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM “A REALLY amazing night for all involved” was how organiser Nathan Parkes described the annual Backburner’s Ball held at the Dalveen Hall recently.

Raising money to construct toilets and showers in the new Dalveen Rural Fire Brigade shed, more than 250 guests enjoyed a night of great food, quality music and plenty of dancing.

Coming from as far as Stanthorpe, Toowomba and Brisbane, the ball was well worth the trip for visitors with entertainment provided by musicians Sasta, Penny Davies, Roger Ilott and Tristan Mathius until 11.30pm.

Nathan said it was pleasing to see supporters of the brigade enjoying themselves for a good cause.

“Every year we hold this event, and it’s become a highlight for many people who attend each time,” he said.

There was also a raffle held on the night, with prizes donated by local businesses.

While the total amount raised has not yet been calculated, Nathan said that the ball was “very profitable” and would be hugely helpful for the brigade.

He also acknowledged the hard work of a group of tireless volunteers in making the night such a success.

“We need to thank all those who helped with preparations before the night, toiled away on the night, and those who helped clean up the following morning,” he said.

“There were also many local business who willingly supported the event, and we will remember to support them in return,” he said.

Plans will begin soon for the 2016 event.

Letters Tongue lashing WITH our Australian attitude of ‘win at all costs’, we are fast becoming the laughing stock of the sporting world.

Local talent is ignored as we trawl through lists of available overseas players to use in our home clubs.

Not satisfied with being the best, so many resort to the shame of drugs as users and dealers.

They demonstrate they are unsettled and disatisfied with fame and glory and unlimited cash.

Our cricketers continue to demonstrate they cannot even handle winning with a measure of grace and resort to abuse and insults when dealing with opponents.

I cannot speak for other sports but let there be no doubt obscenities, abuse and sledging had no place in cricket at any level in my time as an official in cricket.

I am disappointed football referees display a reluctance to show some mettle and thereby accept the tirade of insults, abuse, foul language and gestures from so-called sportsmen.

No one ever presented such conduct to me without the appropriate rewards.

I accept obscene language as the ‘mother tongue’ of many of the top sportsmen we see in sport today but it should never be the case.

Sports deserves better.

Blues skills aplenty from the bay band BYRON Bay’s blues, roots and reggae troubadours the Jesse Morris Band will be playing two special shows and running a young artists’ workshop in Tenterfield this coming Saturday, 11 April, at 2pm and 7pm.

To celebrate Youth Week from 2pm to 5pm all young performers and their families and friends are being urged to attend the Tenterfield School of Arts for an open mic style talent quest, a workshop on instrumentation with the Jesse Morris Band and a special performance for the youth by the traveling musicians. Those who can sing, play an instrument, dance, tell jokes or juggle are urged to get in touch with the school of arts or turn up on the day at 2pm to register.

There will be prizes and giveaways for participation and some dedicated one-on-one time with the professional performers to discuss instrumentation, practice, how to get gigs, touring essentials and all things music and performance.

Down memory lane

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM CORN threshing, beekeeping and sheep shearing were among the many highlights at a historical demonstration and display recently.

The Allora and District Historial Society hosted the annual event in late March at the Old Shire Hall, allowing visitors a glimpse into what life was like for earlier residents of the area.

Old machinery was on display as well as vintage bikes and cars, farming tools and even an antique saw.

Historical Society president Allan Darr said that a number of demonstrations on the day had visitors intrigued.

“We had a farmer from out near Pratten do a shearing demonstration, there would have been half a dozen or eight sheep shorn,” he said.

“There was also a drag saw for people to have a look at, which are pretty rare these days.”

A dedicated ‘Kids Corner’ made for a family friendly event, and food stalls from the CWA and Rotary satisfied hungry visitors.

Allan said the success of the event was thanks to the efforts of several volunteers.

“We had a number of people put their support behind the event, and everything ran smoothly.”

“It was a laid-back day, very enjoyable for visitors and volunteers.”

The display is the Historical Society’s major event each year, and preparations will begin soon for the 2016 display.

EXPERTS from across Australia and rarities from around the world gathered in Stanthorpe recently, much to the delight of local antique lovers.

Nearly 900 people visited the Stanthorpe Exhibition Centre late last month to attend the threeday annual Antiques and Collectables Fair.

Some 20 dealers from as far as Port Macquarie and south of Sydney gathered to display vintage treasures, including clothing, handbags, jewellery, ceramics and furniture.

There was also wine-tasting from Twisted Gums and a community barbecue held throughout the weekend. Organiser Bronwyn Stringer said the event aimed to showcase the highest quality in antiques as well as support the community.

“We incorporate the local community in every event that we run, and we make sure that the fair is of mutual benefit to the stallholders and the local area,” she said.

“There’s a real niche market. We get great support from local people who are very keen to attend.“ Bronwyn and husband Keith travel Australia in their motor home, organising and running antique fairs in various towns. They also sell vintage costume jewellery through their business, ‘Gold Coast Glitz.’

Demand for such an event is high in Stanthorpe, where Sharon Jones of ‘The Antique Corner’ previously organised an annual antique show.

Bronwyn said the fair was a great success and both stallholders and visitors are already looking forward to next year.

“Antique dealers bring a huge amount of expertise to the event and the locals really appreciate that,” she said.

“We hope our next event will be even bigger and better.”

Next year’s Stanthorpe Antiques and Collectables Fair will be held on 2 and 3 April.

Pride of place for local art and award WARWICK Art Gallery is very proud to display the Southern Downs Regional Artists Exhibition throughout April.

The exhibition is a biannual art award for artists living on the Southern Downs.

The rationale to support and encourage local artists was developed in 2009 in partnership with the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery which also incorporates significant opportunities for local artists in their biannual Stanthorpe Arts Festival.

Warwick Art Gallery invited artists to enter the exhibition a few months ago. A total of 82 artists are involved and the variety of media used by local artists in the exhibition has surprised gallery director Karina Devine.

“We ask artists to choose one work to enter in one of four different sections including painting, photography or drawing, sculpture and textiles”, said Ms Devine, “but even within the sections there is a amazing range of styles and techniques.”

“The exhibition is going to be very popular as visitors are always interested in seeing a variety of work that represents the talent of the community”.

A NEW shed, thanks to the community grants program of the Southern Downs Regional Council, has put smiles on the faces of Stanthorpe Pottery Club members.

The club’s glazing and kiln areas have been re-organised and returned to safe and workable spaces with the transfer of bulky items into the new shed.

The club received funds enabling them to buy the shed and engage

Stanthorpe Rotary Club to build it.

Once the shed was completed, some ruthless clutter-busting followed with useful items going to the shed and everything else going out.

An op-shop find of a secondhand table on the day of the working bee has completed the transformation of the glazing area.

The area is now easy to mop clean which minimises dust, an occupational hazard for potters.

The wetter the better THE chance of rainfall in the 50mm to 100mm range across the Southern Downs in the next three months is better than average, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The bureau’s forecasts indicate that falls exceeding 50mm are almost certain, with a better than 50 per cent chance of re-

The major climate influence for the rainfall outlook is the warmer than normal sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean and that surrounding much of the Australian coastline. In the tropical Pacific, further warming is expected, with the bureau’s climate outlook

AUSTRALIAN exporters are encouraged to take full advantage of the benefits of the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA), with the second round of tariff cuts taking effect today.

“This is the second tariff cut under JAEPA in quick succession. The first came on entry into force on 15 January 2015 and the second reduction comes into effect today, 1 April 2015,” Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce said.

Minister Joyce said the Australian agriculture industry was already seeing some real benefits of JAEPA across a range of sectors under this historic trade deal.

“The work of the Australian Government is making a real, tangible difference to producers — we are bringing better returns to the farmgate and helping restore dignity to the lives of farmers who have been doing it tough,” Minister Joyce said.

“JAEPA has already eliminated tariffs for several major seafood exports to Japan including abalone, rock lobster, prawns and oysters. It’s great news for our seafood industries in this valuable market.

“Horticultural exports, including asparagus, mangoes and macadamias now face zero tariffs under JAEPA. Importantly, tariffs on Australia’s largest horticultural export to Japan, citrus, are now being reduced — further improving

AN Introduction to Biodynamics is the topic for the coming free field day presented by the Border Landcare Organic Group (BLOG) this Saturday, 11 th April, at 541 Dalcouth Road (corner Sugarloaf Road), Stanthorpe.

Biodynamics is a proven, practical technique for soil regeneration.

It holds that all health begins in the soil so Biodynamic farmers go beyond organic agriculture by adding potentised preparations to the soil and to compost.

Presenter Alan Johnstone says, ‘Far from being just a philosophical approach, Biodynamics is as practical as conventional activities.’

At present there are thousands of farmers across Australia practising biodynamics as a way of sustaining yields, managing pests and diseases and creating resilience to drought. It is most popular with the orchard and viticulture industries.

A recent biodynamic field day in NSW in December clearly demonstrated this. The area had been in drought and had received some rain the previous week. It was clear which farm was biodynamic – their pastures were immediately responding to the rain whereas their conventional neighbours’ properties still had brown pasture and drought effects.

THE transformative and immersive qualities of camouflage and kaleidoscopes will be explored when Kids on Tour: Pattern Bandits visits Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery and Warwick Art Gallery during the Easter school holidays.

Pattern Bandits is the latest Kids on Tour program from the Queensland Art Gallery’s Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA).

The regional tour has been drawn from the exhibition displayed at GOMA last year which was created by Los Angeles-based Australian artist Jemima Wyman in collaboration with the gallery’s Children’s Art Centre.

QAGOMA director Chris Saines said the very popular exhibition was part of an ongoing series of Children’s Art Centre projects which were developed with leading Australian artists including Gordon Hookey, Fiona Hall, Pip and Pop, Callum Morton and Anne Wallace.

Following the success of Jemima Wyman: Pattern Bandits at GOMA, the Children’s Art Centre has developed a new Kids on Tour program for children and families across regional and remote Queensland communities.

of personal and group identity, while referring to the psychological, political and historical associations they can carry.

The Kids on Tour: Pattern Bandits program will include a range of activities which have been developed especially for children and families by the artist and will enable regional communities to enjoy key elements of the original exhibition at their local venue.

Young visitors are able to create their own personalised

bandannas and perform with the artist’s instructional video Pattern Power Moves, create circular collages and discover how patterns can be transformed by movement and make a digital kaleidoscopic tessellation in the multimedia activity Harlequin Hallway.

The displays are on show at the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery from 14 to 16 April, at the Warwick Art Gallery from 14 to 15 April and the Stanthorpe Piazza on 17 April.

Marchand magic steals show, and the record SCOTS PGC held the 2015 Inter Clan Cross Country Carnival on Tuesday 31 March, involving junior and middle schools.

A highlight of the event was the new record of 11:25.00 set by Oliver Marchand in the 13 years boys.

Friday fisticuffs appals ROUND five of the NRL has been overshadowed by the appalling actions of Bulldogs players and fans.

There was nothing “Good” at the end of Friday night’s game as tempers boiled over on and off the field in disgraceful scenes. The fallout from Friday night’s game will have far reaching consequences. There are major injury concerns for the Bunnies. Greg Inglis aggravated an ongoing knee complaint. Adam Reynolds has a knee injury, Isaac Luke and Glenn Stewart both suffered concussion. They can be added to several key Bunnies already in the casualty ward.

The Bulldogs will be without their captain James Graham, David Klemmer while the Canterbury hooker Michael Lichaa could also be in trouble for his spray at the referee during the Dogs brain explosion.

Officials and fans will be hoping round six gets off to a better start when Brisbane and the Roosters go head to head at Suncorp and Cronulla host Newcastle at Remondis.

Brisbane has strung together four wins on the trot and are looking stronger with each game as Anthony Milford settles into the saddle at Red Hill.

Milford looked more at home against the Titans and broke his duck for his new side, scoring a double as Brisbane claimed a 26-16 win. The Broncos defence was rock solid and will need to be when they host the Roosters. The Roosters looked more like plucked ducks than minor premiers against a resilient Cronulla side searching for their opening win of the season. In a close game, the Broncos should get home.

The Sharks and Newcastle go head to head in the second game Friday night. The Sharks may have turned a corner with a win over the Roosters. They have unearthed an up and coming star in rookie Jack Bird who scored two tries and laid on another for fellow rookie Valentine Holmes.

Newcastle was looking for five on the trot but had a miserable night against the Dragons. Judging by their last start performances, you would have to think the Sharks would have too much bite.

Parramatta was another to have their bubble burst in round five. Like many other clubs, the Eels are struggling with injuries. With most of their backline sidelined, they struggled but led 6-4 before a series of errors handed the Tigers a series of chances

which they capitalised on.

The Titans may not have got the points against Brisbane but lost no admirers and are not far from a win. If the Titans can improve their completion rate, they will trouble the Eels.

The Warriors were once again not without their chances against Melbourne and again they were their own worst enemies as poor ball handling skills proved costly. They must rectify that part of their game if they are to beat a young Tigers side brimming with confidence in round six.

On Saturday night, the bedraggled Manly Sea Eagles take on Penrith.

Manly has been hit savagely by injuries, but looked lethargic and devoid of options and far from the heavyweights we are used to seeing. Their opponents this weekend, the Panthers are coming off another Thurston masterclass. It was not that the Panthers were that bad on Monday night, more that Thurston was again brilliant.

They should atone for that loss with a win here.

Ricky Stuart was talking up his team’s win over the Manly in Albury and while winning form is good form they face a tougher task when they host Melbourne. In an exciting game against the Warriors, skipper Camer-

on Smith added another record to his already impressive war chest when he became one of only five players in history to record 200 NRL wins.

The old form of Slater, Cronk and Smith were seen at their very best, but it was the brilliance of Koroibete who iced the winning cake for the Storm.

Slater is under an injury cloud, however, you would expect Melbourne to go home with the points.

At ANZ on Sunday, the Dragons will be breathing fire as they take on the wounded Dogs. The Dogs will be without some of their fire power. A loss here would be a major upset.

The Cowboys looked committed against the Panthers and have their season back on track. If they take their current form to ANZ, they will beat the Bunnies who have their share of injury woes.

THERE was nothing “Good” about the way the NRL game between the Bunnies and Dogs ended last Friday night.

The disgraceful scenes on and off the field were a blight on sport in this country and something I am sure we all hope to never see again.

The 2015 season is only a few rounds old but I have found myself less and less enthusiastic about the game.

Gone are the days when I would rush to watch the Friday night game – then watch the replay of the second game and follow the remaining games on the radio or TV over the weekend.

I am not alone when I say the game of football that I love so much seems to be a long way from what we are served up each week. The game appears to be descending into something just short of thuggery interrupted at every turn by decisions referred to the video ref and continual player dissent.

What happened on Friday night was disgraceful. No official in any sport should be treated in the manner the Bulldogs players stooped to. While they now have time to consider their actions over the coming weeks, I feel they were treated lightly.

Ray Murrihy, NSW chief racing steward commented that any jockey speaking to a race steward in that manner would find themselves the recipient of a long holiday. Thing is, it would not happen in racing as respect between stewards and jockeys is paramount.

I was disappointed that the Bulldogs CEO Raelene Castle, who until now has been a revelation in the administration ranks, seemed happy to slap her players with a feather. I am sure I am not the only person who felt sterner words were warranted.

If there is one good thing to come of Friday night’s disaster it is that the NRL has finally had enough. Players, coaches and supporters have been put on notice. This behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

The problem is that it has been allowed to fester for far too long. Players at the elite level set the example for others all the way down the food chain and we too often see officials at grassroots and junior levels having to deal with the fallout.

Would you be encouraged to send your 15 or 16-year-old out to referee or pick up the whistle and do a ref’s course yourself after those scenes? I doubt it – you would certainly think long and hard about how you might like to spend your weekends.

Fans also need to take a cold shower.

While rugby league is a tribal game – it is just that from the elite level to the grassroots – it is just a game.

If your team is beaten this week the sun will still come up in the morning and they will play again next week. Chances are if the rub of the green was tough on your team this week it will go their way next week.

One thing that was highlighted in the aftermath of the incident was the fact that players, fans and also commentators do not fully understand the rules.

Perhaps while disgraced Bulldogs captain James Graham sits on the sidelines with teammates they could do worse than study up.

Let’s hope the fans (for want of a stronger word) that resorted to throwing missiles last weekend are identified. As they enjoy their lifetime bans from games they too could enjoy brushing up on the rules, while throwing missiles at their television sets.

SUMMIT CO-HOST DISTRICT EVENT THE Summit Bowls Club is co-hosting the SDMDBA 2015 District singles competition this weekend. Saturday the opening games of the championships will be played and the Summit bowlers who progress to the post sectional play will then play in Texas on Sunday.

It is good to see a group of Summit players have nominated for the event and those players are reminded that as this is a district competition they are required to wear the club uniform/whites.

The district competition rolls out at 9am and there are sure to be some talented bowlers on display.

Club members not involved in the District event will be readying themselves for the following weekend – the $100 trophy day (Saturday 18 April), play commences at 1pm.

Players are sure to use this as the perfect hitout before the 2015 Summit club singles Championships the next day (9am start).

Mark McCosker won the pin at 17 and Mark Hendry collected the remaining pro-pins at 1/10 and 5/14.

Mick O’Brien won the putting competition with a fine display on the slow damp greens needing only 24 putts.

In the rundown, Stephen Kay, Eric McLellan and Mark McCosker, all with nett 70 received a ball.

The ladies were not as adventurous as the men, deciding that nine holes of wet golf was a better option than 18 holes of wet golf. Neta Thouard was declared the winner of the modified event.

She also collected the collected the pin shots for the ladies. Margie Locke was the runner-up in the ladies event.

PENNANTS SEASON TEES OFF SATURDAY marks the opening round of the golfing Pennants season. The Stanthorpe club will have just one team competing in Pennants this year. They are scheduled to play Warwick Golf Club at Pittsworth on Saturday.

Stanthorpe will have just one team this season and are listed to play Warwick GC at Pittsworth.

SLOW PLAY SLOW play can be the bane of a golfer’s life.

Check for signs that that your group is not keeping up with the flow of play.

What you should be looking for: The group that was in front of you has disappeared and the fairway is vacant.

The group behind you are waiting nearly every shot for you to finish your play.

If this is happening you are holding up play and you need to speed up.

Take a moment to be aware of your surrounding and your position in the field of play and show courtesy to other players. If you have lost a ball and are having difficulty finding it, allow the next group to play through.

A commonsense approach to the situation is all that is required.

The inclusion of two club-level classes in ASBK Round Two at Morgan Park Raceway is a first. Formula Three and Supermoto competitors will be invited to demonstrate their skills.

Formula Three is the epitome of club-level racing. Supermoto combines the grace of road racing with the thrills of motocross. Riders take to the track on motocross-style machines with slick tyres, racing on asphalt.

The multiple layouts offered by Morgan Park Raceway mean that the Supermoto competitors need only use a small part of the road-race circuit, making for a real spectacle.

As well as the racing action there will be a large expo area where there will be machines on display; information on local sporting and social motorcycle clubs as well as a big range of motorcycle gear for all enthusiasts.

DEDICATED HOOP RUNNERS A COMBINATION of the Easter holidays and poor weather conditions kept many of the mallet sports fans off the green last week.

Cold damp conditions however did not faze a hardy group of dedicated Hoop Runners who turned out and played two games.

Congratulations to Elaine Brown who scored her first hoop in one. Bill Golding was also on song in the conditions showing plenty of skill.

Shirley Evan had a ball sitting in the hoop in perfect position to score on her next turn only to be spoiled by Golding who somehow jumped his ball over hers and through the hoop.

SUPERBIKES HEADING TO MORGAN PARK THE Australian Superbike championship is coming to Morgan Park Raceway this weekend. It will be the first time the ASBK series has been to Morgan Park Raceway and a new group of riders are about to be introduced to the track.

Morgan Park presents a challenging layout for riders. It has changes in elevation and the variety of corners make it a real rider’s track. Organisers rate it as undoubtedly one of the best layouts in Queensland.

Ex MotoGP, WSS and WSBK rider Chris Vermeulen recently rode the track, declaring “Morgan Park Raceway the best track in Queensland to race on”.

This weekend there will be a departure from the previous format. Each of the ASBK rounds across the country will be run by a host club and helps to better define the progression from club and state level racing to national championship events.

The club-based model also helps the clubs improve, allowing officials to gain experience at a higher lever.

Hunting for booty in the Geocaching Mega Event last weekend.

CAUGHT UP IN GEOCACHING IT WAS hard to miss the additional 950 visitors in Stanthorpe over the Easter break. Hard not to notice those cars around town flying flags or a bevy of excited people ferreting in some of the strangest locations around the town - and no, they apparently were not hunting Easter eggs.

The Spin team inadvertently became involved in the “geocaching” game when a “cache” was accidentally unearthed at a secret location just across the border a couple of years ago. It had been strategically placed outside our gates and held a very prized possession.

The discovery led to some detective work and no it was not someone “having a loan of us” it was geocaching.

We registered with the group last weekend and like Big Brother tracked those who unearthed what we have now claimed as our very own cache, the aptly named “Howzat.”

We also joined the hunt (albeit from the sidelines) to uncover some of the 600 caches hidden

around the town and surrounds.

This mega event was two years in the planning and organisers are to be congratulated on a great event. There was certainly something for everyone. Geocachers are obviously not bothered by conditions – they were out in force in the Easter downpours on a mission to find as many caches as they could.

An unexpected find more than two years ago has whet the appetite of this novice cacher and his offsider.

COWBOYS GO HEAD TO HEAD WITH HAWKS AFTER the Easter break the Cowboys head to Gatton this weekend to take on arch rivals the Gatton Hawks.

After an impressive pre-season and a round one thrashing of Brothers the Cowboys have suffered two losses.

They went down to Pittsworth by 16-14 in their first away game of the season. In round three they gave up a 14-point half-time lead against Wattles in the local derby.

The Cowboys were guilty of poor ball control and a lack of intensity in the second half and captain coach Matt Gainey will be looking for more from his players this weekend.

The Cowboys will need to be at their very best in this game. The Hawks are currently sitting second on the ladder after impressive wins against Pittsworth and Wattles.

The Under 18s also face a tough task. The Hawks will be tough to toss at home, although the Cowboys are coming off a big win against Wattles.

The Hawks also have a win against Wattles and both sides have suffered a loss to Pittsworth.

On paper this looks a close game.

BORDER BUSHRANGERS IN ACTION THE Border Bushrangers travel to Miles this weekend for the annual South West Country trials.

Although the Bushrangers have had their share of players in the representative South West teams in recent years, they have been unable to break though for a win at Miles.

This year the team will be bolstered by the return of Jason Wilmot and Brendan Perkins who have had several successful seasons with the Gatton Hawks.

Jim Loneragan who played in the Queensland Outback side last year has also been selected and will be a huge asset to the team along with several players from the Killarney premiership side.

Tenterfield base Butch Smith has stepped up to take the coaching job for the second year and has a good cross-section of players to work with after the team selection following the recent BRL Round Robin.

Players will looking to gain selection in the South West Country side to play in the 47th Battalion carnival. The carnival this year will be played in Roma in conjunction with the centenary celebration of football in the area. Players will also be looking for selection in the South West Country side to play in this year’s Outback Country Carnival and will be keen to follow in the footsteps of Jim Loneragan, Michael Bloomfield and Jason Wilmot who all played with success in recent Queensland Outback sides.

OUT OF ADVERSITY GRANT Hackett and training partner Daniel Smith proved at this week’s National Swimming Trials that if you want something enough, out of adversity can come success. Both went into these championships carrying as much baggage as a 747 yet both realised success that only a short time ago would have seemed incomprehensible.

All Australian swim fans know Hackett’s ability and we are all well versed in his fall from grace – his problems with addiction and domestic violence and his remarkable resurgence in recent times, however the story of Daniel Smith is equally remarkable.

Smith struggled after also going through a much publicised battle with sleeping pill addiction and his personal life unravelled last year.

Smith the ex-child prodigy who was inspired to return to the pool by Hackett and was once homeless clocked one minute, 47.08 seconds to incredibly top the 200m timesheets.

In the final both missed out on medals but their performances were outstanding in one of the hottest 200m fields assembled. Hackett finished fourth in one minute 46.84 seconds in the event won by Cameron McEvoy. Hackett’s training partner Daniel Smith finished fifth in 1:47.27.

Hackett’s result has booked him a place in the 4x200m relay squad for the world titles at Kazan in Russia in August and hopefully his training partner’s swim will be good enough to see him there alongside him.

Not a bad result for two super athletes who only returned to the pool to help with their road to personal recovery.
