Hopper stopper By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM WILDLIFE Victoria hopped to the rescue of a kangaroo stuck in a Pakenham backyard on Tuesday. At noon a medium-sized kangaroo hopped into the backyard of Ashley Oates’ Balmoral Way property. After reporting the roo to Wildlife Victoria, he waited out the afternoon until a rescue team arrived that evening about 7.30pm. The kangaroo was tranquilised and taken to a Belgrave shelter, where it will spend the next few days recovering before being released back into the wild. Wildlife Victoria says that incidents involving kangaroos in suburban areas are a growing problem around Melbourne. Wildlife Victoria spokesperson Amy Amato said the main reason for this was a rise in population in these areas. “Several factors contribute to this problem, but the main cause is the substantial increase in human population which has resulted in a doubling of the number of calls concerning kangaroos since December 2012,” she said. “This is both a public health issue and a wildlife welfare issue that Wildlife Victoria is left to deal with on a daily basis, including the growing cost of darting these animals to enable their safe management.” The cost of darting animals is around $150,000 per annum, covered by donations by the public to Wildlife Victoria. The number of kangaroos and wallabies reported to Wildlife Victoria on Tuesday totalled 36, with the average number of daily reports standing at 17.4. This includes a significant num-

OFTEN the first port of call for anyone in trouble is to seek out a GP. It’s for this reason mental health nurse Lyndsay Coutet felt it was imperative the Hallam Medical Group provide free drug and alcohol support workshops for the Casey community. The ‘Stepping Up’ workshops will start next week for the second year, providing not just addicts with the muchneeded support they need, but also their families and friends. Mr Coutet said last year’s Stepping Up workshops at Hallam Medical Group were the first that Family Drug Support facilitator Michael Miller had held at a medical clinic. A fact Mr Coutet struggled to believe. “Don’t forget, the first port of call for people is the GP,” Mr Coutet said. “When we are worried about something we talk to a GP, so we thought that would be a good thing to do, to bring the program here. “Since we started the program, people have been more educated and less stressed.” There are three Stepping Up workshops being run this month in Casey, covering general information on alcohol and drugs, stages of change for users and carers, and strategies on how to communicate with someone under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Mr Coutet - who also coordinates the Vision of Hope counselling program for carers

And in most cases, Mr Coutet said, they are. “A lot of people don’t know anything about this… they don’t know we exist here,” he said “Sometimes they want to talk about it and they don’t know where to go.” The Stepping Up sessions will be held on 13, 20 and 27 April from 6.30pm to 9pm at the Hallam Medical Group 212 Princes Highway, Hallam. “This is for people to have
an understanding of their loved one who is taking drugs or alcohol, because a lot of the time we don’t know how to communicate with users,” he said. “Stepping Up is for users and loved ones of users… we want to target the new community, new people… we want to educate the community. “There’s a lot of taboos about these things and there shouldn’t be. “At least when you come here, everything is confidential.” For more information, contact Lyndsay Coutet on 9796 5400.

Carol knew best By LACHLAN MOORHEAD EIGHTEEN years ago Carol Friday guessed Leanne Smith’s newborn son would grow to be six foot four. With the now 18-year-old Jake clocking in at six foot five, Carol wasn’t far off. As a maternal health nurse for the City of Casey patrolling Berwick’s relatively new Timbarra estate in a caravan during the late ’90s, the new mothers on the block came to rely on Carol’s parenting advice and continually trusted her instincts. “Babies don’t come with a rule book and we were all brandnew mums back then, even second or third time mums were seeing her too,” Leanne, now living in Clyde, said. “When you’re a brand-new mum, you’re not sure if anything you’re doing is right but Carol was always available, she always cared. The world has lost a really nice lady, who touched many, many lives. “All of our thoughts go out to her family.” Last month Carol, 68, and her 29-year-old son Greig, perished when Germanwings Flight 9525 travelling from Barcelona to Dusseldorf went down in the French Alps. There were no survivors among the 150 passengers and crew. Carol, a talented artist, and her son, a mechanical engineer, had been enjoying a few weeks’ holiday together before Greig began work in Europe. “I was absolutely horrified,” Leanne said, following the tragedy.

Because it’s someone I did know, it makes it all the more real. “She was just a lovely lady. There will be so many mums in the Casey area that knew her; she affected a lot of people’s lives in an extremely good way.”

A minute’s silence was held for Carol and Greig on Tuesday night at the City of Casey’s fortnightly council meeting. Mayor Mick Morland said council’s thoughts were with the Friday family. Upon hearing of the tragedy, Leanne dug out her son’s yellow “baby book”, a record of Jake’s weight and height written down just after he was born. Carol Friday’s name is inscribed inside the cover.

JOHN Fabian watched his son Luke accept the trophy for best original EH Holden on his behalf at last year’s Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills All Holden Car Show. The Blind Bight man suffered a fatal heart attack just one week later. Luke, 12, will present the same award to this year’s winner on Sunday 12 April. Berwick man Steve Marsden, who’ll be showing his FX Holden at the event, organised the tribute. “Luke’s rapt, he’s really looking forward to it,” he said. “It’ll mean the world to him. “He’s had a hard year and a half. He lost his mum about a year beforehand. She passed away from breast cancer. “We’ve tried to do what we can for him.” Mr Marsden said John was very well known in the car scene. “He owned a big collection of EHs so he was in several different car clubs and went to a lot of shows,” he said. Luke shares his dad’s passion. “I think he’s probably the smartest 11-year-old I’ve ever met,” Mr Marsden said. “He’s taught me things about cars I’ve never known. “He learned everything from his dad. He used to do all the polishing for his dad before all the car shows. He’d get all the cars cleaned and ready for him. “I’m sure he can’t wait to work on the cars and drive them himself on day. “I took him for a drive in the FX a few nights ago and he was so happy because he used to go out every
weekend with his dad.” The Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills event raises funds for aid, including the club’s flagship project Disaster Aid Australia. They create survival packs complete with a tent, blankets and other items needed by people after a major disaster. The 7th Annual Dandenong Valley All Holden Street Car Show will be held from 9am to 3pm on Sunday 12 April at Greaves Reserve, Bennet Street, Dandenong. Entry is $5 for adults and is free for children aged under 16 years. There’ll be activities for children, food vendors and more.

alcohol or drugs. Mr Coutet - who also coordinates the Vision of Hope counselling program for carers of drug users -said the Stepping Up workshops were aimed at showing new people in Casey that help was out there if one
is willing to find it. And in most cases, Mr Coutet said, they are. “A lot of people don’t know anything about this… they don’t know we exist here,” he said “Sometimes they want to talk about it and they don’t know where to go.” The Stepping Up sessions will be held on 13, 20 and 27 April from 6.30pm to 9pm at the Hallam Medical Group - 212 Princes Highway, Hallam. “This is for people to have an understanding of their loved one who is taking drugs or alcohol, because a lot of the time we don’t know how to communicate with users,” he said. “Stepping Up is for users and loved ones of users… we want to target the new community, new people… we want to educate the community. “There’s a lot of taboos about these things and there shouldn’t be. “At least when you come here, everything is confidential.” For more information, contact Lyndsay Coutet on 9796 5400.

By BRIDGET SCOTT A CRANBOURNE mother has called for a change in disability facilities at shopping centres as she admitted she is forced to change her six-year-old daughter on the floor. Niki Harrison said she had lived and shopped in Cranbourne all her life, but said shopping was made much more difficult as she struggled to find anywhere where she could appropriately change her young daughter Abby. Ms Harrison said she was deterred from shopping locally because the only centre she had found where she could change Abby was at Fountain Gate in Narre Warren. “Why should I have to shop at Fountain Gate just so I can change my daughter?” she said. “I have lived in Cranbourne all my life and shopped here all my life.” Ms Harrison said she thought with the new developments at Cranbourne Park there would be adequate changing facilities for disabled children but was proved wrong. “With the new part of the centre, I thought surely they would cater for us,” she said. A spokesperson from Cranbourne Park said the centre management team had met with Ms Harrison to better understand the needs of her and her child. “The team are working with Ms Harrison to review our facilities and how we can improve our existing disabled facilities,“ they said.

However, he suggested that the council’s Lynbrook Community Centre, which is due to open later this month, is an example of an “accessible and inclusive community facility” which does include an adult change table and hoist. Ms Harrison said she was
concerned given her daughter would “only get bigger” and had heard from other people in her position that they didn’t go out. She said she had made contact with management at Cranbourne Park and said the change room there was big enough and that they simply needed a highlow bed on the wall to pull out. “I am happy to take my own sling with me,” she said. “I just want to know I can change her.” Ms Harrison said there had been occasions where she had had to leave Abby in her dirty nappy because she had been unable to change her. Ms Harrison posted a video on her Facebook page of how she is forced to change her daughter, which now has more than 42,000 views and about 1200 shares.

The Cranbourne North teen will tackle the trek once again, with aims to raise much-needed funds to help those suffering, including his mother Tracey who has terminal cancer. Leigh said his main reason for completing such an event was to remind those suffering that there was support out there. “I’m not an academic but I am a sportsman,” he said.
“This way I can do what I love and raise money at the same time.” Leigh attends Sports Education Development Australia (SEDA) and last year lost a classmate, Jayden, to osteosarcoma - Leigh said the 17-yearold was an inspiration and kept fighting to his last breath. Leigh will ride in honour of Jayden, as well as his Aunty Jo, and great family friend Sarah Jane, who both lost their lives to cancer, as well as for his mother. He said
while she had been diagnosed as terminal, she didn’t let this stop her. Leigh will ride with a classmate, a teacher, Jayden’s father and possibly others on 25 October. He said he had decided to train more this year than last year for the 200-kilometre ride throughout Country Victoria. Every drop precious By LACHLAN MOORHEAD GROWING up with a farmer for a dad, Vicky Hamilton knows the importance of water. These humble beginnings were inspiration for the Narre Warren mother of three in recently helping to provide water filters to under-privileged villages throughout Cambodia. “My dad’s been a farmer, he’s retired now, but he had a market garden out in Devon Meadows,” Vicky said. “So I grew up knowing the importance of water. “When we went out to the villages and saw the state of the water they were drinking, it was shattering. “When I came home and took a glass of water from the tap, I was so grateful.” Vicky used to be scared of flying but when her father Kevin urged her to join him on a church tour to Cambodia, Vicky found
the humanitarian need so severe that she has been back several times since her first trip in 2012. “I just fell in love with the country. To see the needs there blew me away,” she said. “We can’t imagine it; I wouldn’t have been able to imagine it. “It was very rough, going without my comfortable Western needs that I’m so used to. “I was taken to a local village. “This was the start of the passion, when I came back I took my husband over there, too. “He’d never been out of Australia before let alone a third world country.” It’s understood each filter caters for a family of five and can help to remove up to 98 per cent of germs. “My Dad’s just gotten back; he did another 60 filters, and now we look after

someone in Cambodia who will touch base with us to make sure they’re being cleaned,” Vicky said. “A lot of the villagers have upset bellies all the time, fevers, and also in parts of Cambodia there is a natural table of arsenic.” Vicky’s new-found passion for helping those less fortunate in Cambodia gain access to clean water has spread to her husband, Ben, and three children Tamara, 13, Corey, 9, and Isabelle, 6. In December the whole Hamilton family travelled to Cambodia for six weeks to supply water filters to the villages. “The kids were awesome, they pretty much gave up Christmas to be involved. “You can’t get that education in the classroom,” Vicky said. “We were sitting there and my six-yearold said she kept thinking about these people in the villages.”

A BERWICK resident who heard noises from outside his house was confronted by three men at his door on Tuesday 31 March. Around 5.50am, the 34-year-old man heard noises out the front of his Glenisla Way house, only to be confronted by three males who made demands and tried to enter his home. After the man retreated, the men left. Soon afterwards, the complainant followed the three men. The Berwick man said he saw them get into a car and get out. Armed with a shotgun, one man aimed the gun at the victim. The victim who ran away was chased by the men who pistol whipped him. He then made it back inside with minor injuries, and the men tried to re-enter and eventually left.

PARTS of a black ‘monkey bike’ were left behind near the scene of a crime in Narre Warren on Monday. A boy was seen riding a bike near Heatherlea Crescent where a grass fire occurred around 4.10pm on Monday 6 April. It is believed the bike broke as parts of it were left behind. Police have deemed the fire, which burnt a 12 by 25 metres swath of land, as suspicious. A CRANBOURNE boy was arrested by police after he allegedly tried to break into a property along Memorial Drive, Narre Warren North. Police said the young man attempted to break into the property about 1.45am on Thursday 2 April but the occupants called police before he had the chance to enter. Police said he was in possession of stolen property and has been charged with aggravated burglary as well as theft. He is scheduled to appear at Dandenong Children’s Court on 12 June.

This panel shop beats the rest By BRIDGET SCOTT A CRANBOURNE panel beater was thrilled to be announced as a Peugot Approved Panel Repairer and said he hoped it would stand his business in good stead for further manufacturer approvals. Cranbourne Body Works was one of few repairers in Victoria to be chosen after a rigorous selection process. Panel beater and owner Kevin Slattery said the recognition means his 26-year-old company is getting support from manufacturers to ensure cars are properly repaired. Mr Slattery said he has seen the industry change enormously during his time. “Nowadays, people don’t want to see one single sign on their cars that there has been an accident,” he said. He said the technology in modern cars complicated and “not just anyone can fix them”. “The perfection that’s required for a car compared to 26 years ago is crazy,” he said. “Cars are getting complicated are all high tech - repairing is not as simple as what it used to be.” Mr Slattery said his business has grown enormously since it started in a small factory along a dirt road in Cranbourne in 1988. “We have grown with Cranbourne,” he Dealer principal Brett Robinson of Peugeot Bayside European, left, with Kevin Slattery, owner of Cranbourne Body Works. 137332 said.
Employment hand up By LACHLAN MOORHEAD FIVE organisations from the La Trobe electorate were last week awarded lucrative Federal Government contracts to help people from the region find jobs. La Trobe MP Jason Wood last Wednesday announced these organisations had won the contracts ahead of the launch of the Government’s new ‘Jobactive’ program on 1 July. Mr Wood said Max Employment, Matchworks, AMES, Direct Recruitment Pty Ltd, and Job Prospects had been selected through a tender process to deliver one or more employment services in La Trobe. These services include Employment Providers, Work for the Dole co-ordinators, and New Enterprise Incentive Schemes. It’s understood the organisations were assessed on their ability to meet the needs of local job seekers, their past performance, and their management arrangements. The tender was conducted by the Department of Employment in accordance with the Government’s procurement rules, and signed off by an external probity adviser. “The Coalition’s new Jobactive system will provide clearer incentives to ensure employment service providers are focused on better preparing job seekers to meet the needs of local employers and helping people to find and keep a job,” he said.
“The new model includes wage subsidies for young job seekers, indigenous job seekers, the long term unemployed, the Restart subsidy for older workers as well as Relocation Assistance to help people move to take up a job. “There is also the Job Commitment Bonus to encourage young job seekers to stay in work and off welfare.” Mr Wood said the Work for the Dole service would be rolled out nationally to help job seekers to learn skills and stay active while looking for work. “There will be new Work for the Dole co-ordinators working with local community organisations to identify activities and places. “The Government has also made changes to assist employment providers to deliver services on the ground. “This includes less red tape, the introduction of five-year contracts instead of three, a mid-contract price adjustment, larger employment regions to promote economies of scale, and an additional loading to support service delivery in regional Australia”. Local job seekers in the coming months will receive advice on which organisation will assist them with looking for work after 1 July 2015. Race over… the count begins By RUSSELL BENNETT ARGUABLY the biggest highlight of this Friday’s West Gippsland Cricket Association senior presentation night at the Kooweerup Community Centre will be the announcement of the Terry Stephenson Medal for the best player in the competition’s Premier Division. And it’s almost certainly a race in two between gun Cardinia all-rounder Neil Barfuss and Pakenham counterpart Russell Lehman. Barfuss scored 563 runs at an average of 37.5, while also snaring 40 wickets at just 10.4. His highest score came in Round 7 against Emerald with an imposing 96, which kick-started a purple patch of five consecutive half-centuries from Round 7 to Round 11. Fittingly, his best bowling figures of 6/46 came when they were needed most - in the grand final against nemesis Kooweerup - but the Demons’ all-around game was just too strong for Barfuss’ Bulls. Lehman’s 2014/15 was just as spectacular, particularly given his dominance at Country Week level for the West Gippsland Warriors where he scored 187 runs at 62.33 and took five wickets at just 15, which included a hat-trick against Goulburn Murray. He amassed 522 runs for Pakenham in Premier Grade, averaging a touch over 40. He also took 42 wickets at 14.1.
The Morrell of the story By JARROD POTTER SUMMERTIME success greeted Pakenham runner Bailley Morrell as he added two more state championships to his evergrowing trophy collection. Morrell, 11, was the toast of the under-11 boys’ competition when he won the 800 metre and 1500 metre middle-distance double at the Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships last weekend. Heading to Albert Park to run around on the famous bluetrack, Morrell had to dig deep to claim the 1500 metre title - fighting from middle of the pack to overtake the leader on the final lap.
“So how I made it to states was I won both of my events in the 800 and 1500 and they were pretty good times,” Morrell said. “Then I went to states and got two golds and almost got a Victorian best time for my 1500. “On the last lap (1500m) I sprinted as hard I could and I overtook Sam Flockhart - it felt really good to win. “Felt awesome after I finished it - in my 1500, I almost got a Victorian best and was only six seconds over it.” He was in superb form heading into the state championships - having knocked off a 41-yearold record in the boys under-11
1500 metres at the regionals. “It was pretty good - a 40 year record - I got under five minutes which was really good,” Morrell said. His 800 metres was a lot easier for the Casey Little Athletics Centre dynamo, as he scorched the field to take the victory in 2.22 minutes. With track season over for another year, Morrell will trade his running spikes for footy boots as he gets a kick with Berwick Junior Football Club. He’ll also keep up his running over winter, with Morrell also a keen cross-country runner who recently represented Victoria.

He ultimately recorded four halfcenturies for the Lions with a top-score of 92, while he only went wicketless in one round all season - Round 10 against Merinda Park. The lionhearted Lehman bowled some massive spells throughout Pakenham’s 2014/15 campaign and each time he stood up to be counted. In just his last four games of the year, he took 25 wickets. At District level, Cranbourne Meadows skipper Brent Murdoch is a practi-
cally unbackable favourite to be named player of the year after a premiership-winning season. He finished with a brilliant 724 runs at an average of over 48, while also picking up 22 scalps at 24.2. Tooradin all-rounder Aaron Avery won last year’s Terry Stephenson Medal - struck in honour of the former league president and Pakenham life member - after scoring 425 runs at an average of 47, and snaring 25 wickets at 10.4. The association’s senior presentation night will kick off at 7.30pm this Friday at the Kooweerup Community Centre on Rossiter Road, Kooweerup.

Upset win heralds surprises By DAVID NAGEL EXPECT the unexpected - that should be the catch-cry for the newly formed South East Netball League this season. Just one game in and the surprises are already flowing with last year’s wooden-spooner Hampton Park taking down reigning premier Doveton. And that’s just the beginning. Our new league has new coaches and players that are keen to make their mark in one of the highest standards of competition anywhere outside the elite forms of the game. Berwick’s Sarah McDermott can feel it. “The excitement around the first game is always there, but this year with so many new coaches and players, it’s even more exciting to get started and see where everyone sits,” she said. New Pakenham coach Kerry Twyford can feel it too. “The enthusiasm and the interest around the place have been great, to the point where
we actually had to cut players from the senior squad,” Twyford said. “We’re looking at four strong sides, all looking to play finals and we’ve been working really hard since December.” And at Hampton Park an early title contender after last week’s demolition of the Doves- new coach Kylie Kiddle can’t wait to test the waters. Kiddle, who comes to the Redbacks after three years at the helm of MPNFL club Pines, is excited to be a part of the league. “I believe this is the strongest out of the three leagues (Nepean, Peninsula and South East) so to make Hampton Park successful would be very rewarding for everyone involved,” she said. The season begins this week with the highlight being the clash between perennial finalists Beaconsfield and Berwick. Road to the future By EWAN KENNEDY THE i3 is the start of future motoring according to BMW - a very bold statement that had us initially feeling sceptical, even cynical. However, the more time we spent at the wheel of the BMW i3 the more we smiled and agreed with BMW’s apparently outrageous prediction. BMW (under different names) has been in the vanguard of design for almost a century. It began designing aircraft piston engines in 1916, then very-early jet engines in 1942, before moving into tiny ‘bubble’ cars in the 1950s, finally getting into prestigious mainstream motoring in the 1970s. That long history of thinking ahead has paved the way for the electric car of the future. BMW i3 is crammed full of technology, all clothed in a spacious body that weighs just 1195 kg. The body is made from a combination of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminium. Note that the optional range-extending petrol engine brings the weight up to 1320kg, a significant difference. Styling of the BMW i3 puts function before fashion - and we like it like that. It could be described as boxy, though there are some interesting
little touches that disguise the practical shape such as the dummy ‘kidney’ radiator grilles and the truncated rearmost side windows. Strong body colours, with contrasting hues in the smaller details help reduce the visual bulk. Interior styling is equally radical. The dash area has horizontal surfaces, with wood finishes from certified timber suppliers in our test car. Information is based on the use of tablet style screens that can be set up in a variety of ways. The BMW i Remote App allows smartphone owners to remotely display information such as range and current battery charge status as well as adjusting the temperature of the interior before entering the car. There are two monitors located on the dashboard, a small one in front of the driver that shows relevant charging and performance information and a larger (10.3-inch) one in the centre of the dash with the usual multimedia and navigation features. The BMW i3 is powered only by electricity. A 360-volt electric motor puts out 125 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque, the torque comes on song from just one rpm (that’s right, just one rpm and you’re into maximum grunt!). This provides more than enough performance for a runabout suburban hatchback.
Zero to 100km in 7.2 seconds in the standard model, and 7.9 seconds in the model with the heavier (by 125kg) Range EXtender (REX) engine. The latter is a 650cc twin-cylinder petrol unit that charges the batteries. The petrol engine never powers the i3 directly and only maintains the battery charge at its current level, it doesn’t increase the amount of energy in the batteries, simply increases the overall range of the vehicle. This is done to encourage drivers to use electrical power as often as possible to reduce exhaust emissions. Further emphasising this is the fact that the petrol tank contains a mere nine litres. As in most electric cars there’s no gearbox as such, just a single speed transmission that provides power to the wheels, the rear wheels in the case of the i3. The biggest plus of electric, and hybrid, vehicles is that energy is put back into the batteries when slowing down
or descending a hill. There are a number of charging options varying from 11 hours for a full charge through a standard domestic 10-amp power point; six hours via a BMW i Wallbox accessory (approximately $1750 plus installation); down to just 30 minutes at a DC fast charging station of which there are currently only two in Melbourne and one in Sydney - with others to come. We used a standard 10-amp powerpoint in our garage. This took the best part of 10 hours if the car was fully ‘empty’ but generally only seven to nine hours to give us a decent driving range of 80 to 110 kilometres. That was using Comfort mode, we also tried Eco Pro and Eco Pro+ modes but found the lack of performance irritating at times as was the lack of air-
conditioning in hot and humid Gold Coast weather. We put ourselves in the keen driver category, presumably green-oriented buyers would get better results, with BMW suggesting 120 to 150km is there if you’re prepared to work at it.
