Bright spark buses

By JOLENE OGLE WITH reduced emissions and less sound pollution, electric buses are the perfect mode of transport for the Noosa biosphere and travellers on route 627 will be the first to try the new technology.

Noosa Mayor Noel Playford has announced a six-month trial of electric buses along route 627 that runs between Tewantin and Sunshine Beach.

The trial will start later this year and follows an agreement between TransLink and Noosa Council after

the completion of a jointly funded prefeasibility study.

Mayor Playford said the initiative could be the start of a major change in public transport in Noosa.

“From the introduction of public transport in Noosa not that long ago, we have talked about smaller buses designed with a Noosa look and feel that would be a point of difference in marketing terms,” he said.

“With the rapid advances in battery technology, we can now look forward to the possibility of envi-

ronmentally friendly buses on our short local routes.

“And, working with TransLink, if we can find a way to make them free to passengers, increased usage will reduce congestion and save huge infrastructure costs at many of our major intersections.”

Council funding of $550,000 for the trial has come from the public transport levy.

The buses chosen for the trial are smaller than the current Sunbus operated ones, but will still have a 60-passenger capacity.

Diesel-engined buses may be a thing of the past, with new electric buses planned for Noosa Shire.

Bunny’s on the money THE Easter Bunny has come and gone and local children Venice, Amelie, Charlie, India, Ruby and Luca of Adeona Early Exploration Centre were busy creating arts and crafts to make sure they were ready for the Bunny’s visit.

Local tourism operators were also busy this Easter.

Most reported a good long weekend, with holidaymakers taking in all the shire has to offer.

Underwater win makes a big splash Fairfax MP Clive Palmer.

Palmer to run again

By JOLENE OGLE CONTROVERSIAL Federal Member for Fairfax, Clive Palmer, says there is “no question” as to whether he will run in the next election.

In a press conference with Canberra media on 24 March, Mr Palmer said he would run again, spurred on by the support of the local community and despite his media team denying Mr Palmer had made an announcement.

“There’s never any doubt that I’ll stand again for parliament, so there’s no question about it,” he said.

“What’s most important is the encouraging support I’ve had from the local community.”

However, Mr Palmer’s media contact said he hadn’t made an announcement “in relation to the next election”.

In the same media conference, Mr Palmer said he had saved jobs when he bought out the Hyatt resort, despite sacking about 40 people last week and a reported 600 people since he bought the resort. “(The resort) was going to close five years ago and those people would have lost their jobs,” he said. “So, we saved all those jobs. That’s the real story.”

Mr Palmer’s comments come after the resort was abruptly closed for renovations, with 40 staff losing their jobs without notice.

In a media statement, resort general manager Simon Stodart said the renovation works would start as early as this month, with the accommodation and conference facilities closed throughout the work.

The statement said the renovations would firmly establish Palmer Coolum Resort as “one of Australia’s leading resorts” and provide the Sunshine Coast with a major boost in tourism.

Mr Palmer said the resort was going to be “bigger” and “better” following the planned renovations.

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL LOCAL underwater photographer Liz Harlin has taken out the title of 2015 Queensland’s Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP) Science, Wildlife and Wild Places Photographer of the Year.

Her incredible winning shots were four macro images which captured a oneinch pygmy-goby plankton feeder, a venomous lionfish, a crocodilefish and a coral hermit crab.

A part owner of local business Undersea Productions, Liz Harlin is internationally renowned for her work which spans marine wildlife, commercial projects and underwater portraits for private clients.

Her one true passion, however, lies deep in the depths of the ocean.

“In my images I like to show the small things that are often overlooked,” Liz said.

“For me, taking photos is not just about capturing that which is most charismatic, like sharks and turtles, but finding other part of the ocean which helps to make up the bigger picture.”

Born in England, Liz grew up in Italy and Canada and began using an SLR camera and developing her own black-and-white film at the age of 11.

In 2001 Liz took up recreational diving and, having fallen in love with the experience, she quit her corporate job in London to spend a year travelling the world as a backpacker, finding work in the diving industry.

It was during this time that she met her husband Josh Jensen, an Australian underwater cameraman.

In 2006 the pair started their own business and a

year later they moved to Noosa.

While Liz views her work as a dream job, she admits underwater photography is a challenging pursuit.

“When you are an underwater photographer you are limited by the air in your tank,” Liz said.

“This usually lasts between one to two hours, depending on how deep you dive.

“My winning image of the coral hermit crab was the most difficult to capture.

“It took me two hours to get the perfect shot and I was really coming dangerously close to running out of air.”

Another issue which Liz encounters when taking shots is that of keeping the subject in focus.

“On land you can use a tripod, underwater you don’t have this luxury, so everything is handheld,” Liz said.

“With the movement of the current and the limited depth of field it is extremely difficult to keep a steady hand.”

With a lot of hard work having gone into Liz’s images, she was both surprised and delighted to have won the prestigious award.

When it came to advice for anyone interested in taking up underwater photography, Liz had one clear point.

“Make sure that you are a good diver before even thinking about picking up a camera,” she said.

“Practise diving in a wide variety of conditions until it becomes second nature because when you are down there taking photos your focus is entirely on the images you are taking.”

Lorraine Kenway said she is ecstatic about the 60 metre trail of over $4500 in $2 coins raised for Santa’s Classy Helpers Christmas Appeal.

LOCALS and visitors came together on Saturday to line-up $2 coins in a bid to raise muchneeded funds for local charity, Santa’s Classy Helpers.

The fund-raising event raised over $4500 for the charity, with hundreds of $2 coins being laid on Gympie Terrace to form a 60 metre line.

Christmas may be more than seven months away, but charity founder and local business owner Lorraine Kenway said she is already busy collecting donations and funds to meet the demand for help at Christmas time.

Since Santa’s Classy Help-

ers started holding its annual free Christmas store for those in need, Lorraine said the demand for help has doubled with more than 300 families asking for a hand last holiday season.

“When we started, there were about 100-150 families needing help, now there are over 300 and it is growing every year,” she said.

Lorraine said she is so thankful to everyone who came out to support their fundraising event on Saturday, but there is still a “long way” to go.

Hijack accused: multiple charges THE 45-year-old man who crashed a Channel Seven cameraman’s car into a fuel tank at a Doonan petrol station last year has been granted bail.

Father-of-four Jordy Brook appeared at the Brisbane Supreme Court on 1 April and was granted bail on the condition he stayed with his mother at her home in Landsborough until his next court appearance.

Mr Brook faces charges of attempt-

ed murder, armed robbery, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a handgun and wilful damage after he went on a rampage on 6 November 2014.

Mr Brook is alleged to have tried to kill a woman in a home at Tewantin on the day of the events, before riding off on a motorbike and then hijacking a Channel Seven cameraman’s car and

driving it into an LPG tank at a Doonan petrol station.

According to local media reports, Mr Brook’s defence lawyer said his actions were due to a steroid-induced psychosis that occurred after he was prescribed medication following serious colon surgery.

Mr Brook will appear at Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court later this month.

Bail was granted to the man who allegedly drove a Channel Seven cameraman's car into an LPG tank at the Doonan petrol station.

“The Noosa Love Parade is a

part of Mr Bristow’s campaign to have Noosa Council and Sunshine Coast Council join 35 other local governments who have added their support to a motion to for samesex marriage.

As reported in Noosa Today last week (2 April), Noosa Council has chosen not to comment on the issue publicly and said it will “leave the Commonwealth to focus on their issues and the state to focus on their issues”.

Since the story broke, Mr Bristow has met with Sunshine Coast councillor Jason O’Pray, which he described as a “lovely and warm meeting”.

“We have the full support of Mr O’Pray,” he said.

Local media reports said Cr O’Pray has said he will arrange a meeting with all SCC councillors and Mr Bristow to discuss the issue further.

A 23-YEAR-OLD man will be returned to New South Wales to face charges for escaping from prison after being pulled over for a random breath test in Tewantin on 11 March.

Local police said the man was pulled over for the test when police smelled drugs on him and he was arrested for drug offences.

After allegedly giving a false name, the man was found to be a prison escapee from a New South Wales prison.

The man faced Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court last month and is expected to be returned to New South Wales.

Caught with stolen property FOUR men have been charged with stealing after local police spotted a car with a stand-up paddle board on the roof, being held down only by the occupants of the car.

Local police were patrolling Noosa roads on Saturday 28 March about 2.30am when they saw an oncoming car with a stand-up paddle board on the roof.

The officers said they noticed the car had no roof racks, but was being held down by the four males in the car who were using their arms to secure the board.

Police pulled over the car and found other items in the vehicle which they said were stolen.

The owner of the board, a man visiting from Taree, NSW, woke that morning to find his board missing and a note from the police.

The board was returned to the owner and the four males will face court.

THE revised proposal for Sekisui House’s controversial development at Yaroomba has been released to the public.

While it still fails to comply with Sunshine Coast Council’s current town planning scheme, Sekisui House Senior Development Manager Evan Aldridge is confident that the changes suit the needs of the local community.

The updated proposal incorporates feedback gathered during stakeholder engagement conducted across the Sunshine Coast since October 2014.

“Our updated proposal represents a balance between the needs of residents, business groups, community feedback, council’s objectives, and Sekisui House as site owners,” Mr Aldridge said.

A key change is the reduction in height of a number of the buildings on the site, with the proposal including two 10 storey buildings, compared to five, which was in the original plan. The tourism precinct, which includes the five-star international hotel and serviced apartments, will be the only precinct to include two 10 storeys buildings.

“The need for the hotel precinct to be 10 storeys is based on substantial feedback from major international hotel operators to ensure the ongoing viability of a five-star international hotel,” Mr Aldridge said.

“Building heights in the residential precinct have been reduced, which has also seen a reduction in the number of apartments from 1470 to 1350.”

Evan Aldridge, Sekisui House Senior Development Manager said that overall the revised layout has allowed us to define four precincts within the site.

“The tourism precinct is located as a destination point on the main entry; the retirement living, aged care and wellness centre precinct adjoins the lake, park and open space,” Mr Aldridge said.

“There are two residential precincts, both adjoining the tourism precinct to provide good connectivity to amenities.

According to Mr Aldridge the new layout maintains the company’s strong urban planning principle of maximising open space and limiting building footprints. The building footprint is still under 20 per cent of the site area, with the remaining 80 per cent as open space.

(82 per cent) and sustainability initiatives will include solar power generation, water reuse, lighting, innovative waste management systems as well as future proofing for use of electric vehicles.

A new entry into the site off David Low Way has also been introduced to address feedback on traffic issues from the adjoining residents in the Coolum Residences estate.

Sunshine Coast Council will review the revised plans and decide on whether it will consider the proposal in the first amendment of the Planning Scheme.

“It’s important that the community knows that this is the only the first, in a number of steps, before we are able to submit a development application,” Mr Alridge said.

“Over the last 10 years, 17 amendments have been made to the region’s Planning Scheme - this demonstrates the process we are undertaking is not uncommon.

Clear advantage for local group A NEWLY established local Indigenous company, has been awarded the weed management contract for Sekisui House’s controversial 20-hectare development site at Yaroomba.

Gondwana Pty Ltd is an initiative of the DASSI Group (Descendants of Australian South Sea Islanders) and was established

by Mick Fewquandie who, seeing the need for employment of Indigenous and Islander people locally, decided to take up a new challenge and create his business.

Up to 80 per cent of its members are of Islander and Indigenous heritage.

Mr Fewquandie is thrilled to

have been given the opportunity to undertake the weed management contract as it is his first major project for the company.

“Gondwana is very happy to have won the contract in an open tender, and to provide job opportunities for our people in the local area,” Mr Fewquandie said.

“Not only do we have the expertise and energy to do the job but we bring with it the traditional valuing and love of the land itself.”

Gondwana joins a number of local contracting firms Sekisui House uses to regularly maintain the existing developed and undeveloped sections of the site.

The yearly contract will see the site cleared of Class 2 and Class 3 weeds such as groundsel bush, lantana, climbing asparagus fern and camphor laurel species plus others.

The contract also allows for ongoing weed management activities to maintain the site.

Sekisui House senior development manager Evan Aldridge said Gondwana had been chosen as it brought significant local knowledge of the area and experience in weed management and importantly a cultural affinity with the land, plus competitive pricing which contributed to them securing the contract.

TWO local men have been charged with drug offences after police searched a Noosaville home on Sunday.

Police from the Sunshine Coast District Gang Squad searched a home in Jacksonia Place, Noosaville, during which they said they found 350 MDMA pills, a quantity of steroids, a handgun and ammunition.

Police also said a search of a vehicle also uncovered a further 400 MDMA pills and cash.

Following the search a 34-year-old Peregian Springs man, an alleged member of a motorcycle club, was arrested and charged with a number of drug and weapons’ offences including three counts of possession of dangerous drugs and two counts of unlawful possession of weapons.

He was due to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

A second 27-year-old man from Noosaville was also arrested and charged for possession of drugs.

The man is due to reappear in the Maroochydore Magistrates’ Court on 29 April.

In her spare time, Isabella also helps out at the Shotgun Shootout surfing events throughout Noosa beaches giving her a taste for her dream job.

“When I joined the Shotgun Surfboards team three months ago as their social media manager, they were speaking of running a surf comp for locals called the Shotgun Shootout,” she said.

“Straight away I offered to be the event manager and director, as it is what I aspire to do when I am older.

I was fortunate enough to receive the position.”

LOCAL schoolgirl Isabella Lynden never realised she was special.

She simply assumed all 17-yearolds were busy with five jobs while achieving A grades at school and chasing a dream job within the surfing industry.

It never occurred to her not everyone was doing the same.

“I guess some people have yoga or something to do for their quiet time,” she said. “Being busy and achieving something is my down time. I’m just a busy person. It’s how I’ve always been.”

Isabella is in her final year of high school and so far she can add School Captain of Sunshine Beach State High School, receptionist, and volunteer youth and community engagement manager for a personal development course to her already impressive resume, but Isabella’s heart belongs to the ocean.

Surfing since she was eight-yearsold, Isabella said her dream is to one day work in the surfing industry as an event manager.

Having already organised a girlsonly surfing day for her school, Isabella has big dreams to join the world surfing circuit.

“I have such a strong passion for surfing,” she said.

“I have organised a girls’ surf day in September 2014 at (school), which is another great success and is now a

Bumper holiday season LOCAL tourism operators have enjoyed a busy Easter holiday with many expecting the sell-out season to continue throughout the school holidays.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said many tour operators, accommodation venues and restaurants have all reported a great Easter holiday period.

“Alex Gilmour from Nautilus Noosa Resort said the resort was fully booked over the Easter four-day weekend and there are already strong bookings throughout the school holidays, with visitor numbers for February and March well above last year’s figures,” he said.

“Sharon McCulloch from

Coral Beach Resort in Noosa said they were also fully booked for Easter and March and April.

“This year has been their second best year since 2009… and it’s been a bumper holiday season for Hotel Laguna with this Easter their best in a long time.

“But it wasn’t only the fivestar resorts that were busy with holiday-makers over Easter.

“Debbie Cummins from Boreen Point camp ground said they were packed with Easter bookings and were looking great for the rest of the holidays.

“Restaurant and tour operators have also enjoyed a bumper season with many busy thanks to beautiful weather

over the four days.

“Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club manager Ashley Little said the Easter trade was significantly better than previous years with their Sunday trade as busy as Christmas school holidays.

Mr Massingham also said feedback from operators was very encouraging.

“Tourism is our largest employer and contributor to the Noosa economy,” Mr Massingham said.

“It is great to see visitors are getting out and about across the region and enjoying everything Noosa has to offer.”

Beautiful weather over the Easter holidays saw holiday-makers making the most of Noosa.

Our Chloe's on board IT CERTAINLY isn’t every day a Year 12 student gets the chance to join a board of directors responsible for a multi-million dollar business.

But for Noosa District State High School Year 12 student Chloe Bare, the opportunity to join the board of the Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Limited (SCCFSL) is exciting.

Chloe said she had a keen interest in business and only last month she was appointed as a junior observer for 2015 on the SCCFSL board, who manage

the community bank branches of Bendigo Bank in Cooroy, Marcoola, Tewantin and Pomona.

Through Bendigo Bank’s sponsorship of Australian Business Week (ABW) held at Noosa District State High School each year, Chloe learnt of a program where she could attend each SCCFSL board meeting and learn more about how community banking worked at a boardroom level.

“I’m just so happy to have been given this opportunity,” Chloe said.

“The SCCFSL board is filled

with directors who have years of experience and great success in the business world and they’re really lovely people too.

They’re all actively involved in their community and keen to pass on their knowledge.”

Chloe said it was a great “head start” in learning how boards worked as well as learning the important part community bank branches played.

Driscoll piers… home to roost

By JOLENE OGLE IT HAS taken 20 years and a “long and arduous” journey, but Kevin Driscoll finally has the paperwork to prove he and wife Vicki own the jetty at the corner of William Street and Gympie Terrace.

“It’s been a very long journey and one we shouldn’t have had to take,” Mr Driscoll said.

“It’s been a financial strain for my wife and I, throughout the battle, but we are now finally recognised as the owners of the jetty.”

Mr Driscoll’s plight to prove ownership of the jetty he and his wife bought in 1993 made national headlines last year when he chained himself to a makeshift platform on the jetty in protest.

“It needed to be brought to a head, and this was the best way,” he said.

At the time of the protest, Mr Driscoll said Noosa Council was to blame for the jetty’s deterioration due to a lack of maintenance of the adjacent footpath, a claim he stands by today.

Mr Driscoll said the sliding footpath shifted towards the jetty and led to the pylons being damaged and then when Cyclone Oswald came through in 2013, “the jetty never stood a chance.”

More than ten months after Mr Driscoll chained himself to the jetty, the Driscolls received a letter from the department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) stating the Driscolls were free

“When we got the letter, we didn’t know which way it was going to go,” he said.

“I was thinking about what I would do if the answer was no… we would have to start our fight all over again.

“Luckily, thanks to thorough research from the EHP staff, we now have records to prove we own the jetty.”

Mr Driscoll said he also owes the win to the local people who supported his protest, from beeping in support as they drove past to bringing food when the weather was cold.

“I want to thank the people of Noosa who have supported us in our fight,” he said.

“We couldn’t have done it without knowing we had the support of our local Noosa community.”

But the fight isn’t over yet, with Mr Driscoll now working with Noosa Council to have the footpath and damaged pylons repaired before work can begin on the new jetty.

A Noosa Council spokesperson said council has always been responsible for the repair of the footpath and planning works for the repairs are currently in progress and in “liaison with Mr Driscoll”.

Council couldn’t confirm whether there are plans to raise the footpath a metre high, which Mr Driscoll said would isolate the jetty.

“Final design details are awaiting finalisation,” the spokesperson said.

“Council is undertaking discussions directly with Mr Driscoll in relation to a solution to the current damaged footpath and association areas.

“We are awaiting his proposed options to be sent to the CEO of council.”

Mr Driscoll said he has met with council and received options for a solution to the repair of the footpath, but believes council should also be responsible for the repair of the pylons.

THE derelict houseboats littering Noosa River won’t be removed anytime soon, says Noosa MP Glen Elmes, who has slammed the Labor Government’s lack of economic plan.

Speaking at the first sitting of Parliament on 26 March, Mr Elmes said he couldn’t endorse a motion to express confidence in the Palaszczuk Labor Government because it implied the election was “normal in the sense that the electorates of Queensland have embraced a new government with a suite of policy ideas”.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” he said. “This government really is a policyfree zone.

“This government has snuck into power. It said nothing. It never put its head above the parapet to make sure it was engaging with the community. As a result, it was able to sneak into power.”

Mr Elmes said Labor lacked an economic plan for the future of Queensland, including Noosa.

“It was an LNP government that ended the slide into debt,” he said. “We are now

Speaking with Noosa Today, Mr Elmes said the decision to not re-elect a coalition government meant many of the planned works for Noosa would not be carried out.

“There is no $2 million for Noosa River,” he said.

“The Labor Government is still bleeding with $4 billion in interest repayments and no economic plan. We (LNP) came out with a plan and the people have not voted for us, as is their right.

“The LNP has been seen as arrogant, as picking too many fights and trying to do too

much too quickly. And all of this is true. We were rejected at the election.”

Prior to the 31 January election, Mr Elmes promised a chunk of cash for Noosa, should LNP be re-elected, including $2 million to cleanup Noosa River, $250,000 for works at the Noosa Tigers AFL grounds, and a promise to reduce household costs and drive down the cost of living over a five-year period.

Mr Elmes said despite his lack of confidence in the current government, he will continue to fight for Noosa, with the planned works on Eumundi Road to go ahead as the $2.5 million in funding was secured before the election.

Arts and craft are back - and it’s a celebration THE Noosa Arts and Craft Association is back in action, with their first event held on 27 March in celebration of their members’ artworks.

With more than 80 entries and four judges, the competition was a huge success with winners announced in six categories.

NACA life member Judy Chipperfield of Two Old Ladies Teashop provided the canapes and Noosa Today photographer DARRYN SMITH was there to catch all the action.

The NACA’s next event is the Autumn Art and Craft Exhibition in May, which will be a new event for the group and will be the first in a series of three joint exhibitions of six groups.

It’s bringing out our best thousands, so I’ll go along with the estimated 30,000.

Starting at 10am and dancing, eating and singing its way to the wind-up at 9pm, it really was a great success.

But please remember this event grew from humble beginnings, a struggling main street with empty shops and no imagination until some locals drove their passion into reality.

Now in its fourth year, the Ocean Street World Festival is building momentum along with the new restaurants, bars, cafes and venues along the street.

The street-length food court offered German, Indonesian, Spanish and African delights and was complemented by belly dancing, South Sea Islander, Brazilian samba and funk music.

Last weekend I witnessed and enjoyed being at the newest music/cultural festival in the heart of Maroochydore.

Another win for the day was introducing some of the international triathletes who are currently based here for training.

The group is being tutored by longtime Noosa tri commentator Toby Coote and has been here since the Mooloolaba World Cup in March.

Toby has high hopes for one of his charges, Papua New Guinean Rachel James, who has already improved her swim time by five minutes and is gungho to represent her country again after her first appearance in Glasgow last year.

All four athletes will be heading for Port Moresby for the Pacific Games in July.

The weekend festival has already

produced competition with new event announced for August, the Maroochydore Music and Visual Arts to be based on the old seventh fairway on the Horton Park Golf course.

It all sounds terrific, but not so, as the Caloundra Music Festival is planned for around the same time.

So as you can imagine, this competition has already put some noses out of joint.

I think it’s terrific because it will add the competition that’s needed to keep event organisers on their toes to produce the best result for everyone.

It might even bring some Sunshine Coast councillors up to date, in where ratepayers’ money should be spent.

If you don’t know, most successful

Coast events are run by individuals/ event organisers who are supported financially or council staff to help run a smooth operation.

Most events need to have many sponsors and a wide volunteer base to run their annual event.

Noosa event organisers should take a bow, as their events have led the way and it’s that local jealousy and competition that’s seen all these other events come to fruition.

The Jack Newton Pro-Am, Jazz Festival, Noosa Triathlon, Long-Weekend and the upcoming Food and Wine Festival are a testament to an amazing group of individuals and their supporters, who started the competition.

Back to native vegetation THE Weyba Bushland Care Group is calling on the community to help restore native vegetation near the Wooden Bridge on Weyba Creek.

The group will gather on Saturday 18 April between 8am - 10.30am to plant native plants and enjoy a delicious morning tea and a sausage sizzle afterwards.

The work comes as a result of about $20,000 in funding from a “Everyone’s Environment” State Government grant awarded to Weyba Bushland Care group, in conjunction with Noosa Integrated Catchment Association and Noosa District Landcare.

The grant money will be used to carry out weeding and planting work in a number of locations near Weyba Creek and along the Weyba Esplanade.

The grant has heartened the volunteer groups who have welcomed the financial assistance.

“The grant is more than just financial help, it demonstrates that the government values and appreciates the work we do,” dedicated volunteer Phil Meade said.

“As a member of Weyba Bushland Care group, my wife Diane and I enjoy knowing that we are helping to create a safe and attractive recreational area while we are clearing invasive weeds.

“We have also met a wonderful group of like-minded people and enjoy their comradeship.”

Phil said that there was plenty more work to do to help repair areas of degraded natural environment in Noosa and any help in this regard would be very much appreciated.

Former director of Environment and Planning, Noosa Council, and member of Weyba Bushcare Group Raul Weychardt said that Noosa’s natural environment was enjoyed by all and although most areas looked healthy and vital, many of the shire’s parks and creek banks were infected by weeds.

“Over time, these invaders are becoming more prevalent, and if left unchecked will become a very strong feature of our landscape,” Raul said.

“This is especially so in our neighbourhoods and the waterways nearby.“Joining a local Bushcare Group is a convenient way to join like-minded residents in tackling some local weed areas in a co-ordinated approach.

“With support from council and a grant from the Queensland Government, we are able to make a difference in our area.”

Fast, furious, and the best yet seen

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL BCC Noosa Cinemas were overflowing last Thursday night for Autopro’s screening of Fast and Furious 7.

The venue was completely sold out for the event, with excited attendees of all ages quickly piling into Cinema One. A Datsun 1200 was also present at Thursday’s screening, shining brightly in the foyer of the cinemas and drawing plenty of attention from onlookers.

In typical Fast and Furious style, the film took viewers on a

whirlwind adventure from the first scene to the last.

While the storyline was fairly ordinary, this was made up for with dramatically impossible stunts, raging cars and bulging muscles.

Rated M, the action-packed film was the perfect tribute to actor, Paul Walker, who sadly passed in November, 2013 with filming only half-completed.

An energetic applause rang out as the film came to an end, with many viewers describing it as “the best one yet“.

Council wants your views RESIDENTS are being urged to speak up on the social issues that matter most to our community, with feedback being collected to help shape council’s new social plan.

The feedback will also help council provide recommendations to state and federal governments.

The Grahams of Pomona are one such family who have already put their feedback forward.

For the young local family, asking state and federal governments to provide more funding or incentives for local businesses to take on apprentices, maintaining social support networks and affordable sporting opportunities are seen as high priorities.

“Our children have grown up here, but their opportunities for work without travelling a long way are limited,” Madeline Graham said.

Her eldest son has recently sought an apprenticeship.

“We provided him with a car and he visited more than 60 businesses from Noosa to Gympie looking for an opportunity, before finding a position in Gympie.

Many of his friends have a similar story.“These are good kids and some of them are only now just starting to find opportunities.”

Spokesman for council’s Social Plan Reference Group, Cr Frank Pardon, urged residents to join the Grahams and have a say on the local social issues they were most concerned about.

“Should we be highlighting to state and federal governments that more youth training facilities and services are required to help our young people into work?” Cr Pardon said.

“Should council advocate for more services for older people who are isolated at home, or should council ask for a push to-

LAST Thursday was the perfect day to celebrate our biggest fans, our grandparents, as part of the annual Grandparents Day event at St Andrew’s Anglican College.

Grandparents and families were treated to a number of student performances before they toured the classrooms to see where their grandchildren learn.

College captain Tyler Kiernan acknowledged the support of all grandparents.

“What makes our time at St Andrew’s so special is the support we receive from our biggest fans, our grandparents. They are always there to nurture us, offer guidance and love us no matter what,” Tyler said.

School principal Chris Ivey said this annual event was about acknowledging the importance of our relationships with grandparents.

“Grandparents Day is about giving thanks and celebrating these important relationships and all the little things our grandparents do for us,” he said.

Youth heart for art with some vibrant creations

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL NOOSA and Cooroy libraries have put together two small, yet vibrant exhibitions, showcasing art of local schools in a bid to celebrate Youth Week 2015.

At Noosa, the display is made up of works from Noosa Flexible Learning Centre, Pengari Steiner School and Sunshine Beach State High, while Cooroy proudly shows off art from students at Noosa Christian College.

With everything from intricate sketches and vivacious painting to colourful mosaics and ceramics, the youth art exhibitions have so far been greeted with an extremely positive response, with onlookers impressed with the talent on display.

Noosa Library’s Young People’s Services librarian Maureen O’Shea said that exhibitions were a first for libraries and something which they were hoping to grow bigger and better next year.

“The exhibition is a great way to make people aware of the exceptional creative talents of young people in our community,” Maureen said.

“It is great to see the kids doing such amazing stuff and that the community has the chance to appreciate it.”

Maureen hopes the display will also attract more young people to the library.

“The library is connecting all aspects of the community, however, we often find it difficult to attract young adults,” Maureen said.

“When children get older they tend to drift further and further away, and hopefully having their work on display may draw them back in.”

The Youth Art Exhibitions are on display at Noosa and Cooroy libraries through until 19 April.

Road CLosuRes COOROY RSL wishes to notify residents and road users of the following road closures: Maple Street, Cooroy, will be closed to all traffic on Friday 24 April, from 11.30am to

noon and parking is restricted in front of the Cooroy RSL. Diamond Street and Tewantin Road are closed to traffic on Saturday 25 April from 4.30am to 6am.

All vehicles will be diverted by police and SES through Sapphire Street and Olivine Street.

People attending the dawn service can enter the restricted area for parking until 4.50am.

People coming from Tewantin or Tinbeerwah for the service along Tewantin Road should arrive early before the road is closed at the top of the hill at Olivine Street.

Maple Street will be closed to all traffic and parking on Saturday 25 April from 10am to 11am for the Anzac Day street parade.

Festival of great ideas WHAT do a captain, an arctic explorer, a creative arts professor and a technologist have in common?

If you’re in the audience at TEDxNoosa 2015 it will be up to you to figure it out. After sold-out events in 2013 and 2014, TEDxNoosa is back with another inspiring day packed full of ideas and performances.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2015 event, which will be held on Friday 29 May at The J in Noosa.

This year’s event is themed Land’s Edge and the full line-up of speakers will be announced over the coming weeks.

TEDxNoosa executive producer Vivianne Barry said there would be plenty of local variety to look forward to.

“Over the past few years we’ve

been lucky enough to secure some well-known speakers, and it’s been wonderful to share their ideas and hear the audience’s feedback,” she said.

“This year we’ve decided to give more space to local voices.

Their ideas are locally significant with global relevance and we’re excited to showcase them on the TEDx forum.”

As well as a full day of inspiring talks, attendees will also enjoy a range of musical performances and fuel up on local food and coffee made by one of Australia’s best baristas. Participants will also have the chance to explore Innovation Alley, an interactive showcase of technology, entrepreneurship and digital art.

TEDxNoosa licensee Brian Keayes said after the success of the

2013 and 2014 events, the organising team is excited to be bringing another unique collection of ideas, people and possibilities together on the Sunshine Coast.“When we decided to organise the first TEDxNoosa back in 2013, we had no idea how strongly the community would embrace it,” he said.

“More than 650 people have attended the live events, thousands more have watched the live video stream and our talks have been watched online 633,982 times.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our icon partner, Central Queensland University, or our major partner, Noosa Council.”

Not so smart

THE Sunshine Coast Council has a positive structured approach to deliver a better business economy, more jobs and a plan for the future.

The best the Noosa Council can come up with is a reference to the ‘smart business economy’ which to date has generated little or no benefits for the Noosa economy.

Noosa has the highest percentage wise business bankruptcy and the highest youth unemployment on the Sunshine Coast and no obvious council plans to address these issues.

It was a surprise to learn that this significant Sunshine Coast Council Economic Plan was the work of a past Noosa Council.

A BIG thumbs down to the litter bugs who left the barbecue hut at Gympie Terrace Lions Park a complete mess after their Easter Sunday barbecue.

IN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT of Councillor Jurisevic’s response concerning my remarks about the recent “clean up“ project and the undertaking of council to continue the “hard rubbish” collections, great stuff!

But perhaps my observation about the ugly sight of trolleys from Coles and Woolworths and their associated liquor outlets is in stark contrast to the “new kid on the block”, Aldi, whose system “leaves no trolleys and doesn’t appear to trouble the customers when they obtain tokens for the trolleys ... the major companies’ complaints about the cost of introducing token/coins for the trolleys etc etc” - hardly stands up to scrutiny. Joe, what an opportunity to take on a “thorny one“ and clean up this long running sore. Good luck.

Watching the news tonight (4 April) and the two opposing “armies.“ Those for Islam and those against. It’s all nothing new, as I recall the scare tactic of the Domino and Red Peril fear. What I find most fearful is the discriminate way of taking away genuine and loyal readers’ right to express their point of view. This came about on the coast because of people for and against a mosque being built in Maroochydore. Maybe there’s a fear that someone using a pseudonym will start World War III? During WWII as one of the many expats we feared bombs and bullets, not words.

I couldn’t give a damn what a person’s beliefs are. Just leave my vegie patch alone and I’ll leave your kosher and halal alone. I’m sorry, I can usually find something to laugh about in most things but I find this latest impost on a person’s freedom of speech is pitiful. I often wonder just who is next to put in these abhorrent detention centres?

Tony a top friend SUNDAY 29 March was National Neighbour Day, a day dedicated to encouraging neighbours to get together and share a cuppa.

Jo and Peter Edwards of Sunrise Beach are just one of the many lucky residents in the Noosa Shire who have wonderful neighbours.

Tony, known as Tony the Fisherman in the local community, lives next door to Jo and Peter and is described as an amazing friend and neighbour, someone who can be totally relied upon when help is needed.

“Every week Tony comes and puts out our bins for us,” Jo said.

“If they are left, he will also bring them back up our driveway for us.

He delivers local papers, come rain or shine, directly to his neighbours’ front doors.”

Jo said Tony had also helped look after their home when they were away on holiday.

“Some of the things he did for us include turning off the water when we leave and turning it back on for us before we arrive back home,” Jo said.

“He watered the garden and pot plants, mowed our quite large lawn and did the edges for us the day before we got home. What a lovely surprise.”

Jo and Peter said Tony’s kindness and assistance was known by all the local neighbours and there wasn’t anyone who didn’t know how wonderful a neighbour Tony the Fisherman was.

“Our neighbourhood would be much poorer without Tony,” Jo said.

Everybody needs good neighbours and Noosa residents are lucky to have some of the best.

MY father-in-law was once seeking a property manager to best manage his investment house, and his approach was something I have never forgotten.

His method was to personally visit every agency in town as if he was looking for somewhere to live.

After being shrugged-off with a photocopied list of rentals on several occasions, he finally found ‘the one’.

Walking into a local agency, he asked the

usual questions. But instead of receiving a dull response, this property manager was far more attentive - asking him what his rental history was; did he have references readily available; how long a lease was he seeking and in what area - among other things.

He told her immediately she was hired.

Which of course caused a little confusion, but he explained to her, after he had ‘interviewed’ a long list of uninterested candidates, she was the only one who showed interest on behalf of the property owners, without alienating the renter. He knew his property would be in safe hands.

When it comes to managing an investment property, be sure it is in the best hands. Essentially, a property investment

is a business, which needs industry-savvy people to help run it, which is why hiring a professional is something I highly recommend.

In any successful partnership, communication is key. Ensure the potential manager has a range of options available, including post, phone, email or internet to keep open lines of contact between the property owner and tenant.

It is also important to talk to your property manager about property maintenance. With rising rents, tenants are increasingly particular about properties’ condition and are reluctant to pay top dollar for homes that have seen better days.

Keeping up appearances with a fresh coat of paint as required, attending to any necessary repairs or even installing air-conditioning or a dishwasher will help achieve top rental price and a house-proud tenant.

To attain the best price and returns, it is essential to keep abreast of the rental market. Ask the property manager if they conduct regular rental reviews. Often, increasing your rent in line with the market, the divide between rising monthly mortgage repayments and the contribution a tenant makes each month decreases.

Ensure you have access to an educated perspective, someone who knows if the price is fair, to avoid alienating a good tenant.

BY JOLENE OGLE NOOSA Council is tightening the rules when it comes to approving building applications, with over 70 per cent of building applications from the past three months approved with conditions.

The latest report from the Planning and Infrastructure Department, presented to the Planning and Organisation Committee on 31 March, showed 44 applications for building or renovations had been lodged with Noosa Council’s Planning and Infrastructure Department since 1 October 2014, of which 31 were approved with conditions.

The data is a dramatic increase when compared to the previous quarter where only 22 per cent of applications were approved with conditions.

Building and Plumbing officer Rob Wibrow said the tighter conditions on approvals was due to a “more consistent approach” to processing applications. “(The increase) is a reflection on new processes.

up new templates with new ways to assess things,” he said.

“This is a more refined approach to the Noosa Plan, making sure development stays consistent with the planning scheme. It’s about being more cautious with our conditions.”

Mr Wilbrow said the increase of conditions on application approvals was designed to stop the “creep”.

“The bulk of applications are for carports, so we’re making sure people are not adding to them,” he said.

“Basically it’s to stop the ‘add ons’. We’re not allowing for any creep and you must abide by these conditions.”

According to the report, the conditionally approved applications would “require advice and monitoring to ensure particular outcomes of the planning scheme are met.”

In the past six months since 1 July, Noosa Council has received 90 applications, of which 41 were conditionally approved, 34 were approved without conditions, and two approvals were refused.

All of the living areas face north-east, positioned to maximise

the river views, with careful consideration to amplify the use of space for storage options and ease of flow throughout.

David says the plans are subject to Noosa Council’s final approval, but given the rarity of this opportunity, buyers are urged to register immediately for a chance to secure an apartment.

Time to give the grant back

REIQ is calling for the reinstatement of first home owner grants for existing housing.

THE Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) has renewed its call for the reinstatement of first home owner grants for existing housing.

“We believe it was a shortsighted move to restrict first home owner grants to new home purchases, but there’s a real opportunity now to put that right.

“It would also greatly assist Queensland’s residential housing recovery and help thousands of extra Queenslanders to realise their dream of home ownership.”

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said strengthening first home owner incentives should be towards the top of the political agenda for the Palaszczuk Government in 2015.

“We’ve already held some very positive discussions with Treasurer Curtis Pitt on this issue and we’ll continue to make the case for this important economic reform.

Ms Mercorella said there was no sound basis for the preferential treatment which currently exists for purchasers of newly-built properties.

“This is an important issue out there in the community, with so many Queenslanders wanting to see first home owner grants made available to buyers of all property types,” she said.

“Reinstating the full spectrum of first home owner incentives would unlock millions of dollars in investment, delivering an important boost to the Queensland economy.

“There needs to be a level playing field for all first home buyers in Queensland,” she said.

“When grants for existing housing were abolished in 2012 first home owner rates experienced

a marked decline, but this could be reversed with the reinstatement of a more even-handed scheme.

“The current two-tiered system favouring one class of homebuyer over another has simply resulted in thousands of Queenslanders being locked out of the residential real estate market.

“We acknowledge there is a need to create more housing supply, but first home owners shouldn’t be limited in their choice as they are under the current system.”

Cruise is making waves CRUISE along to Noosa Arts Theatre for a memorable evening of satirical social comedy with the Queensland premiere of David Williamson’s recent smash Cruise Control, steaming into the local venue on Wednesday 15 April.

Tickets to the shipboard comedy – that has left theatres bulging and critics gasping in its wake – are already selling fast as the playwright marks 45 years at the top of his profession.

Director Sam Coward, who produced Williamson’s highly acclaimed Managing Carmen for the 2014 Noosa Longweekend is again at the helm.

Inspired by a cruise the Noosabased playwright and wife, author

Kristin Williamson took, the play centres on the tensions between three couples forced to dine together aboard the Queen Mary 2 as it ploughs its way from London to New York.

“Kristin and I went on a cruise from London to New York, thinking it would be a very interesting thing to take this historic tour,” Williamson said.

“We found we were trapped with the same people, whom we did not know, on our dining table for the whole seven nights.

“The Cunard Line was quite rigid about it. You either sat on your assigned table or you didn’t eat.

“My dramatist’s imagination started to think what might happen

if the three couples really started to annoy each other in a big way,” Williamson said.

Williamson, also the Noosa Arts Theatre patron, recently directed the play for the sell-out season at the Sydney Ensemble Theatre.

The friction, tensions and misunderstandings that occur when people are forced to co-exist drives the comedy and the drama.

“I think that many on the Sunshine Coast come from all over Australia and have travelled extensively so they will not only recognise Darren, the rough-edged Australian surfing boy made good and his private school Sydney wife, but the New York couple and the English couple,” Williamson said.

“One hopes they have never encountered a character quite as appalling as the failed English novelist Richard, but perhaps they have.

“Individuals are individuals but nevertheless the country one grows up in leaves an indelible stamp on our social behaviour and gives rise to frictions and misunderstandings between cultures.

“In Cruise Control there is plenty of that and our overseas travellers have probably experienced such frictions themselves.”

The cast includes Stephen Moore, Frank Wilkie, Kay Ellsum, Melanie Myers, Linda Gefken, Andrew Moon and William Harbers.

ONE of the heroes of the rock and roll era, Gene Pitney has been immortalised by the King of Cabaret Eddie Daniels in the Best of Gene Pitney Show.

Arriving on the rock scene in the late ’50s as a gifted songwriter, capable musician and incredible singer, Gene Pitney’s dramatic tenor voice, given to piercing climaxes, was among the more remarkable voices of the age.

Throughout his career he notched up a string of Top 40 hits in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

Pitney’s earliest success came as a songwriter, having his compositions recorded by Roy Orbison, Bobby Vee and Ricky Nelson.

Convinced he could not only write hits but sing them as well, Pitney re-launched his career in 1961 with an ambitious recording of his “Love My Life Away” on which he multi-tracked vocals and overdubbed instruments in a pioneering feat of record production.

Pitney’s success had a resurgence in the ’80s when Marc Almond, formerly of Soft Cell,

WE’VE moved from the creek to the river, from backwoods suburbia to front row resort town, and it’s taking a bit of getting used to.

Over by the creek it was mostly very quiet, apart from the occasional squawking of bats as they flew in formation over the house at sunset.

Here, in holiday season at least, the air is alive with the sound of people having fun, families splashing in the pools of adjacent apartment blocks or playing noisy ball games while backpackers laugh loudly over beers in the cafe across the street.

It’s been more than 15 years since we lived in this street and, unless my memory is deceiving me, it’s a lot noisier than it used to be, or maybe it’s that we’re a lot less noisy than we used to be!

Certainly the daily soundtrack of construction work on new apartments is more intense and I don’t

remember having to look both ways as I left the house to avoid being skittled by break of dawn athletes.

But I think I like it again.

The neighbours, old and new, are friendly and welcoming, you can’t beat the position, a hop, step and a jump from the river, and I feel a bit like I’m on holiday. Or retired!

Our friend Patrick Roach even bought us matching his and hers, pink and blue spinning rods, so as soon as the Easter crowd has thinned out, no doubt we’ll be down the end of the street at sunset, casting for our dinner.

Hobie lives on The missus is learning to stand up paddle (thanks Rick and Donalee) so we braved the crowd on Good Friday and did some laps of Munna Point on the beaten-up old NSP. We were both struck by the size of the flotilla of fun craft on the water, everything from SUPs to floating gin palaces bobbing up and down in the brown water.

And everywhere you looked, the

familiar H of the Hobie logo.

It suddenly occurred to me that it was Good Friday last year when we took our places at the lookout on the mesa above Capistrano Beach in Southern California to watch an even bigger assortment of boats and boards form a huge circle off Doheny Beach in honour of Hobie Alter, dead of cancer at 80.

I wrote at the time: “It was a day for honouring a true surfing hero, when more than 1000 surfers paddled out to join a flotilla of small boats and, of course, Hobie Cats, to celebrate the life of the pioneer surfboard and catamaran designer Hobie Alter.

“Hobie started his surfboard building career about 60 years ago underneath a house on the cliffs above Laguna Beach, about 200 metres from where I’m sitting now as I write this.

“He went on to open Southern California’s first surf shop at Dana Point, and subsequently to revolutionise sailing with the Hobie Cat. “I had goose bumps (or chicken skin, as they say over here) when

the sad sounds of Aloha Oe drifted across the beach from Dana Point, and people said their final farewells to Hobie.”

I had chicken skin all over again, watching the Hobie Cats sail past on the Noosa River a year later. Hobie, gone but never forgotten.

Gotcha! Kelly’s April Fool’s Day trick He’s such a trickster, the greatest surfer who ever lived!

The last time Kelly Slater pulled an April Fool’s Day stunt it was to announce that he and long-time sponsor Quiksilver had parted ways (an unthinkable split in the world of surf) and it turned out to be true.

So it was perhaps understandable that a lot of people took it seriously (your columnist included) last week when Slater announced on his Instagram account that the event he is currently surfing in - the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach - would be his last, that he was calling it a day, hanging up the quiver, leaving the tour.

There was something in the wording of it - too flippant perhaps, Kelly

being a guy who often wears his heart on his sleeve - that didn’t ring true, and so it turned out.

Someone (not me) looked at the calendar and noted the date and went, “aha!” And in a few hours the hum of social media had dropped a level or three. Gotcha!

But one day soon the great man will make that announcement and it won’t be a hoax.

At 43, his days at the top of pro surfing are numbered, and even though he has been on the world tour for most of his adult life, there is a lot more stuff going on for Kelly, and I’m sure he’s looking forward to the next great adventure.

But I just watched him give the young rookie wildcard Keanu Asing a tactical 101 in round three at Bells, continuing his self-assured tilt at a fifth bell, and I hope like hell he’s got another year or two left in him.

We’ll still have Julian Wilson to barrack for, of course, but pro surfing will be the poorer for Kelly’s leaving it.

Sickly sweet substitute THE Cancer Council is warning Queenslanders against health claims on products sweetened with sugar substitutes, many of which still contain higher than recommended levels of sugar.

The warning follows the release of new World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines recommending sugar intake be limited to less than 10 per cent of total energy intake to reduce risks of overweight and obesity.

According to the WHO, a further reduction to below five per cent, or about 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day would provide additional health benefits.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said many products using sugar substitutes could still contain significantly more sugar than the recommended daily intake.

“We’re urging all Queenslanders to read the labels, spot the sugars, cut their consumption, and stay healthy.”

Method: 1. Mix together the almond meal and protein powder in a medium-size bowl.

2. Add the nut butter and maple syrup and mix again until the batter is just like cookie dough.

3. Add the chocolate chips and mix into the batter.

4. Using a tablespoon or a cookie scoop, scoop the dough into the palm of your hand and roll into balls. Repeat until the mixture is gone.

5. Place in the fridge and allow to set for about four hours.

For an extra tasty treat, roll the balls in shredded coconut before placing in the fridge or drizzle with melted dairy-free chocolate. Yum!

When there is misalignment of the skull it can put slight pressure on different areas of the brain, contributing to concentration issues, dyslexia, headaches, tinnitus, distorted vision, speech and hearing problems and hyperactivity.

Pain or a clicking noise when opening and closing the mouth or increased pressure on the sinuses can be the result of misalignment of the jaw (or TMJ).

Chiropractic cranial adjustments can help relieve this tension on the jaw and associated complaints such as headaches from clenching.

By ALASDAIR SCOTT THE ‘monsoonal’ rain did not dampen the spirits nor spoil the convivial atmosphere at the Eumundi Swim Club Presentation evening, held at the CWA Hall last Thursday night.

Despite the weather, the whole membership was there to celebrate the numerous achievements of the swimmers in season 2014/’15.

Kaitlyn Walker and Troy Carlson are still in full training as they prepare to represent the club at the National Age Championships in Sydney later this month.

Lachie Constable only just missed out on making it - but the club is backing him to be there next year.

For a small club, it is a notable achievement to have swimmers competing at the Nationals and is in no small part due to the outstanding coaching and support of Lachie McLean.

Pierce Ludvigsen edged it for the boys and Amali Scott for the girls, congratulations to the two of them for an outstanding season.

“It has been a tremendously enjoyable year” commented new president, George Brook.

“With so many good young swimmers, next year will be very exciting,” Brook said.

By BRUCE BLAKEMORE THE four-person challenge final at Noosa Table Tennis was always going to be decided by results that were against theoretical predictions.

The first was Alan’s comeback win over Oscar - after being two sets down he fought his way back gallantly to secure a crucial five setter to give the Gamblers an all important early advantage.

The second - and most exciting - was the high-octane battle between Tony and game-favourite Steve. The age defying ability of Tony to counter Steve’s forehand

attack was the catalyst for a five-set last-point victory for Tony that would ultimately push the Gamblers into safe territory.

The memories of almost losing the semis have long faded and they can now enjoy hoisting the very first trophies at our new venue.

By MICHELLE MOORE THREE Noosa athletes have been selected to represent Little Athletics Queensland at the Asics Australian Little Athletics Championships in Perth on 26 April.

The athletes are part of the 26-member under-13 and under-15 state team, comprised of 22 under-13 boys and girls, and four under-15 pentathletes (two boys and two girls).

Amy Brice, 13, has been selected to compete in the under-13 girls 200m, long jump, triple jump and discus events, along with Courtney Steel, also 13, who has been selected to compete in the under-13 girls 100m and 200m events as well as the 100m-relay event.

Amy is no stranger to nationallevel competition, having competed at the Australian Junior Championships this year, winning a silver medal as part of the under-14 girls 4 x 100m relay team, and also winning a gold medal in the under-15 girls heptathlon at the recent 93rd Australian Athletics Championships in Brisbane.

This will be the first time that Courtney Steel has represented Little Athletics Queensland at national athletics championships.

Courtney won a bronze medal in the 100m at the recent 2015 Little

Athletics State Championships and has performed strongly all season achieving state and national qualifying times in the 100m and 200m.

“I am so excited to be going to Perth as part of the Queensland team,” Courtney said. “All of the effort that I have put in to training has

all been worth it, and the fact that I’ll be travelling with and competing alongside my training partner Amy is a bonus.”

Meanwhile, Zane Branco, 15, has been selected to compete in the under-15 boys pentathlon.

This is the second time Zane has

represented Queensland at the Australian Little Athletics Championships. In 2013, Zane was selected to be part of the under-13 state team alongside fellow Noosa Little Athletics member Summer Johnson, winning a bronze medal in the triple jump.

A gold-medal performance at the 2015 Little Athletics State Championships in the under-15 boys pentathlon as well as a gold-medal performance in the under-16 boys heptathlon at the 93rd Australian Athletics Championships has boosted Zane’s confidence in his abilities after having spent most of last season recovering from knee surgery.

“I’m really looking forward to competing at the national championships in Perth, after having spent most of last season not being able to compete at all,” Zane said. “I’ve really worked hard to get my fitness back this season and this is a great reward for all that effort.”

Noosa Little Athletics head coach Mick Hooper will also travel to Perth with the athletes, making it four years in a row that he has been selected to be part of the coaching personnel for the Queensland State team at the Australian Little Athletics Championships.

Lifesavers raring to go at North Kirra Between the

ON Monday 13 April 2015 some 7000 lifesavers representing 311 surf clubs from all round Australia will gather on North Kirra Beach to contest the Australian National Surf Life Saving Championships.

We wish them well, but above all we send our best wishes to those who will compete wearing the colours of our two local clubs, Sunshine Beach and Noosa Heads.

At the recent Queensland Titles, both our local clubs achieved good results; in particular the juniors.

During the Nationals the Bilinga club will host both the champion lifesaver and first aid competition.

In Champion Lifesaver, a blue ribbon event, Charlotte Webber will represent Noosa and in The First Aid, Noosa will be represented in the under-15 and 19 divisions.

In the swim section, Sunshine’s under-14 boys won all their team

events at the state titles and for the girls Oliver Emanuel and Talisa Brady performed well.

These are just a few of the many young guns who will represent our two clubs.

I am sure they will do us proud.

With the number of competitors, plus families and supporters, it is easy to see why this is the biggest carnival of its type in the world.

Keeping this in mind, let us not forget that next year from 16 -24 April 2016, the National Titles will be coming to our own backyard, namely Maroochydore, Alexandra Headlands and Mooloolaba.

These three clubs will play host and at the completion of the carnival, many of the abovenamed people, who plan their annual holidays around the titles will take off to visit local beaches and towns.

This will be a great opportunity for Tourism Noosa.

Two weeks ago the light aircraft crash at Noosa’s Main Beach highlighted the vital role played by our I.R.B. (Inflatable Rescue Boats) teams.

Despite the fact that they conduct some training sessions during the summer months, the major part of their training happens in winter.

This comes about because the IRB patrols are now a major part of our system.

As such, they must remain at their home beaches where they conduct not only normal patrols, but courtesy patrols.

At the completion of the surf club patrol season, the competition season for the IRB teams will get underway. Already, a heavy program has been drawn up.

On 2 May a carnival will be held at Burleigh Heads and following this on 7 May, a two-day carnival will be conducted at Broadbeach.

Then on 30 May the Noosa club will host another two-day event.

Suggested programs for this consist of events for the under23s, opens and masters.

Events will include boat races, mass rescues and multiple boat rescues.

These events are designed around what can, and has hap-

pened on beaches around Australia.

By holding them at various locations with different conditions, it gives crews the confidence to handle whatever comes their way.

When one takes into consideration the varying conditions of Noosa’s Main Beach, the treacherous Noosa Bar with its sandbanks and Alexandria Bay with its big surf, it is imperative that this sort of carnival program be conducted.

As we have said before, this type of rescue work is for the dedicated lifesaver and is definitely not for the faint hearted.

We wish all involved, the drivers, crews and support teams a busy time.

Patrol captains reported big crowds for the Easter break with safe conditions.

At Noosa, a swimmer was rescued at West Beach and at Alexandria Bay a board rider who got into difficulties, was rescued when the Sunshine Beach courtesy A.T.V.roving patrol arrived on this lonely unpatrolled beach.

Indeed a very lucky young man.

Easter sunshine surprise is a catch

By JACK MANGROVE WITH the promise of a very wet Easter, we were pleasantly surprised when we woke up Easter Friday to find patches of blue ski on the horizon. With the finer weather and fishing rod in hand, many families made their way to the river.

Whiting have still been in good numbers and have been the perfect target for the kids, with the dog beach and frying pan fishing well on the incoming tide. Live worms, yabbies and pealed prawns have been the baits of choice.

Bream have been thick in Woods Bay. On prawns, pillies and strips of bonito, small soft plastics and blades have been the lures of choice. Lots of trevally have started making their way into the river, as the water temperature drops, and this will only get better.

Small micro jigs have been accounting for good numbers of golden and big eye trevally.

Flathead and tailor are also being hooked on the little jigs. Jack have again been landed around the rock wall at the river mouth.

Quick reflexes and a heavy drag are usually the key to muscling them away from the rocks.

The inshore reefs are again the place to be with large schools of bait congregating on them. Halls, Sunshine Reef and Jew Shoals have all been producing with good catches of sweetlip, snapper, coral trout, tuskfish, tuna and mackerel.

Trolling diving lures around the reef edges and drop off has seen some great results. Micro jigs have also been accounting for a great mixed bag of reefies as well as pelagic. Sunshine Reef is perfect for this style of fishing.

Soft plastics have again been getting there fair share of reefies with the scented plastics working a treat. Mackerel have been quite thick with good catches of spotted and Spanish mackerel coming from North Reef and Chardons Reef. North Reef has also seen a fantastic bag of reefies with pearl perch, snapper, tuskfish, maori cod, sweetlip, just to name a few.

On the beaches, we are starting to see some good catches of winter bream coming through and dart are still hitting baits as soon as they hit the water. Whiting are in good numbers on the incoming tide with the deeper gutter holding some bigger fish.

Robby sweeps all before him RON LANE ON SUNDAY 29 March at 2pm hundreds of lifesavers both men and women, from all up the east coast gathered beside the Bulli SLSC in NSW. The occasion was to show their respect and bid a sad farewell to one Australia’s finest and most respected lifesavers, Robby Meijer.

Robby started his career as an eight-yearold Nipper with the Woonona club and obtained his bronze medallion in 1968. In 1978 he joined Bulli.

During an outstanding career of some fifty years Robby became a legend through his involvement in all aspects of competition from rescue and resuscitation, through to surf boats.

But it was in the tough competition arena of surf boat racing that he really made his mark.

As Robby had been the surf boat sweep/ coach of Noosa from 2001 till 2005, it was only fitting that Noosa club be represented at the ceremony. Consequently twelve Noosa members, male and female, made the journey.

Among those was Steve Kelly, who when called upon to speak on behalf of Noosa said, “Robbie Meijer was the best thing that ever happened to the boat section at Noosa.”

It was on the 26 December 1949 that the history of surf boat racing started in the Noosa Heads SLSC. The day bore witness to the launching of the clubs first ever surf boat fittingly named, ‘Noosa’. True to his word Alby introduced us at the National Titles. We shook hands and a short time later Robby and his partner Cheryl arrived in Noosa. When we discussed the business side of things Robby told me, “I will do everything to make sure that the boat section does not become a financial burden.

“Also if a crew member has a patrol violation he will not represent this club ’til that has been rectified.” On both points, Robby kept his word.

Robby immediately formed two crews an ‘A Crew’ and a ‘Masters’. By the end of the 2002/03 season Noosa had won the coveted Open Boat Queensland VB Cup - rowing in his specially designed green boat.

The following year Robby formed a ladies’ crew that went on to win the Sunshine Coast Branch Championship, Queensland State and then capped this off by winning the Open Ladies Australian Surf Rowers League Championship. Molly Stewart who rowed in ladies’ crews for four seasons said, “Robby built our section from the ground up.

“I joined from Mooloolaba… he made everyone feel welcome… on carnival day in the Noosa tent it was like a family gathering.

“But most important he was always looking for new ideas… very open minded.”

The 2004/5 season bought similar results when his opens mens’ won the Queensland State Title and his ladies continued their success by winning a silver medal at state. They followed this by again winning the ASL Open.

During his time in Queensland he also helped many other crews among those were Rainbow Bay, Northcliffe and Kurrawa, and these achievements were just a few. Robby

One of our finest, and one of the most respected lifesavers in Australia, Robby Meijer. also found time to become one of the very few boat sweeps to obtain the very coveted Level Three SLSA Coaching Certificate. This award plus his outstanding success in competition places him among the all-time greats of the Australian Surf Boat Fraternity.

Away from the surf he was also heavily involved in Rugby and was also the author of many training programs for various sports; he also took part in cross training activities.

While in Noosa he also held many training sessions with the coach and rowers from the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club.

“It is only right that we always help our locals,” he said.

Sadly Robby has left us at the young age of 62 years. To his partner Cheryl our very best wishes, our door is always open.

His years in Noosa have told us that here was a man of integrity and pride. Above all a man referred to by all those who knew him as, one of nature’s gentlemen.

that it required all club members to lift it. Now some sixty-six years later boats are still being raced by crews that proudly wear the Noosa colours of maroon and white.

Through the years there have been many members who have proudly made outstanding contributions to this form of competition both as sweeps and support groups - sweeps such as Keith King, Ray Stinger Zillman and Alby Maxwell and support teams Phil Cave, Mick Curwen, Steve Kelly, Les Miller just to name a few. But the man who really left his mark and took Noosa to great heights was without a doubt sweep/coach, Robbie Meijer.

It was in the year 2000 that myself as club president was informed by the then senior boat sweep Alby Maxwell, that he was resigning and return to NSW. I was somewhat taken aback by this news but Alby said, “Don’t worry mate, I am not leaving you in the lurch.

“I have got a bloke lined up to do the job for you, his name is Robby Meijer and he is one of the best.

“I will introduce you to him at the National Titles.”

Upon learning the name of the man I was about to meet, I did my research and in doing so realised why Alby said, “He is one of the best.”

Among his many achievements, and there were many, he won the NSW Open Boat with Bulli in 1990 and then in 1993 and 98 won the Australian Reserve Grade boat championship. During the 1991 season he and his crew had represented Australia at the Trans-Tasman International Surf Challenge at Mereweather, perhaps one of his greatest achievements. And by a strange coincidence, two members of that crew Chris Mercer and Rod Mercer are cousins of the currant Noosa head coach and iron-
