Cop attack arrest

By ERIN SOMERVILLE A MAN has been arrested and charged for allegedly assaulting and threatening a highly ranked off-duty officer in Albury last month.

Albury police arrested a 30-yearold man on Swan Street, North Albury on Thursday, after investigating the 27 March incident, where a highly ranked Albury police officer was assaulted off-

duty while attempting to stop a crime.

The man was refused bail and will face Albury Local Court today, 8 April.

The female off-duty officer and her friend were near a building site in Albury when they saw a woman inside the fencing on the site, and attempted to prevent her and a male accomplice from leaving the scene.

A struggle followed and the man

pushed the officer a number of times and threatened her and her friend with a bladed weapon. The man and woman then drove away in the vehicle.

The 30-year-old man was charged with a number of offences, including: Entering enclosed lands; Larceny; Assaulting officer in execution of duty;

The man’s arrest follows the arrest of a 40-year-old woman, who was arrested at a home on Swan Street on Saturday 28 March.

She was taken to Albury Police Station and charged with stealing, trespass and shoplifting for an unrelated matter.

The woman was given conditional bail to appear at Albury Local Court next Tuesday 14 April.

High in the saddle

By ERIN SOMERVILLE THERE was plenty of horsing around at the Crowe Horwath Albury Wodonga International Horse Trials over the Easter weekend, as 360 competitors headed to the Border to ride for a spot in the upcoming Oceania Team Championships.

With competitors travelling from as far as Western Australia, Queensland, and Tasmania for the event, secretary Bradley Hayden said the Border did not disappoint.

“Albury has got a good reputation of being a good event,” he said.

“That was maintained over the

weekend and we were all happy with it.

“The facility is really good.”

The competition, which involved dressage, cross country and show jumping, drew some star power.

Olympians Stuart Tinney and Megan Jones wowed spectators with their equestrian skills in the three-star events.

After decades of service to equestrian events on the Border, Culcairn’s Olympian equestrian rider Andre Hoy’s father Jim was named patron of the weekend’s event.

Jim Hoy is in his nineties, but still regularly helps out with preparations for equestrian events.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE FOR many parents and carers on the Border who have raised a child with autism, it’s their child’s amazing and specialised abilities that stands out rather than their disabilities.

As a colourful flashmob hit Albury’s QEII Square on Thursday for World Autism Awareness Day, local children with autism were Shaking It Off with Taylor Swift to show just how full and fun their lives can be.

Jennifer Tait, whose son Alec has autism, helped co-ordinate the flashmob dance.

She said she hopes the day’s educational event will not only raise awareness about autism but also acceptance.

“The flashmob is about showing autism isn’t all doom and gloom,” she said.

“We’ve had lots of fun.

“There’s not a lot of information in terms of positives.

“They’ve got special qualities that they’re not only good at, but brilliant.”

Alison Palmer, who is a Border GP and also has a child with autism, said support and understanding for those affected by autism was getting better in the area.

“GPs are becoming a lot more educated and aware of the disorder,” she said.

“Incidents seem to be going up because we are getting better at diagnosing it more and recognising kids on the spectrum.”

Carload lucky to live

By ERIN SOMERVILLE POLICE say a carload of people are lucky to be alive after the vehicle they were travelling in rolled near Table Top on Good Friday.

Around 9.30am the vehicle was travelling south on the Hume Freeway before it veered off the road and rolled multiple times.

It was carrying a male driver from Sydney and four other passengers.

Four people were taken to Albury Base Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash blocked the dual southbound lanes on the Hume Freeway near Table Top, where traffic had to be diverted.

Police say the accident was related to driver fatigue, and are reminding people to stay safe on the roads when undertaking long trips, particularly over the busier school holiday period.

They’re very lucky, Albury Police Inspector Scott Russell said.

“People need to be alert if they’re going on long trips.”

Ms Martin said while it was encouraging to see that autism was being more readily diagnosed

and recognised, it was important to continue helping those with the disorder to build a strong future.

“What happens after school?” she said.

“We are not able to sustain their employment if the services aren’t there to support that employment.

“We want them to get a job, be

able to sustain it, and live life as best they can.”

The QEII event for World Autism Day was RAASN’s first event, with funds raised going back into the Aspect Riverina School.

“Aspect has, basically, been a lifesaver,” Ms Palmer said.

POLICE are investigating an unusual case of horses being robbed of their hair in Jindera.

A total of 18 horses have reportedly had chunks of their manes and tails taken by the unusual thief, who hit the paddock along Adams Street last week.

The incident reportedly occurred between 3pm on Thursday, and 1pm on Good Friday.

“They could possibly use horsehair for jewellery or fly-fishing lures,” Albury Police Inspector Scott Russell said.

“It’s very unusual and we’re seeking assistance from the public with this one.”

While no horses

were injured, police say the horsehair thief could be charged on a number of accounts, including animal cruelty.

Police believe the horsehair thief may be a local resident.

“There were 18 horses - they would have had to have some knowledge of horse husbandry and how to muster them.

“They would have had to have confidence with them and to spend time in the paddock.”

The horses belong to various different owners.

NBN good to go for 2017 THE Border can expect to see reliable broadband services in the area sometime in 2017, according to NBN Co’s latest updates.

The company responsible for rolling out the Australian Government’s plan to connect all Australians to the national broadband network by 2020 announced on Wednesday that Albury, Balranald, Culcairn, Holbrook, Henty, Wodonga, and Mount Beauty could expect works to begin next year.

Sometime within 12 months of construction starting, the NBN will be able to be switched on in these areas.

The quarterly construction plan released provides an indicative schedule that includes

work already underway or planned to commence before the quarter at the end September 2016, covering more than 890,000 New South Wales homes and businesses in total.

Independent Member for Indi Cathy McGowan welcomed the news that the North East had again been included in the latest fixed line footprint.

“This is great news for householders and business owners in these areas,” she said.

“Small business owners will also welcome this news today and be able to promote and grow their enterprises further when they connect to the NBN. “Residents in Wodonga have been constantly asking my office when the NBN is coming to

their area and today they have their answer.”

Member for Farrer Sussan Ley has also welcomed the update, which includes 700 homes and businesses in Holbrook, 500 in Culcairn, and 500 in Henty.

“The Albury-Wodonga region is a tech savvy area - we’ve been hungry to get the NBN as soon as possible and today we make good on that promise to start making it happen,” she said.

“The Coalition knows rural areas need this technology just as much as our major centres we’re delivering the technology as fast as we can but only making assurances we know can be achieved."

Need is building

By ERIN SOMERVILLE BUILDERS on the Border say they have to resort to hiring workers from interstate and abroad to fill the large gap created by a lack of tradies.

Roofers, plasterers, and particularly bricklayers, are highly sought after but are hard to find as the region continues to grow, and the state prepares to build 50,000 new homes this year.

Chris Moscher, owner of G.J. Gardner Homes Albury, said that its builders were feeling the effects.

“Our focus is always on using local trades where we can, but in order to maintain satisfactory build times we have had to hire workers and contract tradies from other states like Queensland, as well as foreign tradesmen who are here on working visas, to get the job finished,” he said.

“The highest demand currently is for bricklayers, but with the lowest apprentice numbers in a decade and an average age of over 55, they are quickly becoming an extinct species.

“The government’s listing of the trade on the skilled occupation list last year has certainly helped the situation, but costs are still high.”

Mr Moscher said the average costs of the trades in demand have risen by over 60 per cent in some cases.

Albury TAFE bricklaying teacher Glen Kilpatrick said numbers were dropping for bricklaying apprenticeships, but that it could be a rewarding career path for dedicated and hard-working students.

“There certainly have been a drop in numbers of (bricklaying) apprentices coming through for a long time,” he said.

“Most are employed as apprentices and will have to do two to three years on an apprentice wage but when you get your trade, the world is your oyster.”

Fire warning for April

By ERIN SOMERVILLE FIREFIGHTERS are experiencing one of their busiest times of the year as a dry autumn continues to create dangerous fire conditions into April.

Only 14.2mm of rain has fallen on the Border this autumn, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, currently well short of March and April’s combined average of 92.5mm.

“We haven’t stopped,” CFA District 24 operations officer Mark Owens said.

“Unfortunately, the time is right for burning off and right across the North East we are seeing fires getting away and people not having the right equipment.

“The conditions are pretty dangerous.”

The warning comes after a Tallangatta farmer received burns to 20

per cent of his body, including his legs, arms, neck, and face, on Friday after a grassfire quickly spread.

Ten tankers and 40 firefighters were deployed to tackle the fivehectare blaze.

The man was expected to be discharged from Albury hospital yesterday.

An investigation will be conducted into the circumstances that caused the fire.

Mr Owens said the fire highlighted how dangerous conditions still were, and warned that uncontrolled fires would be reported to police if a permit had not been issued for them.

In Victoria, permits are still required for burning off, and this is expected to continue until 13 April.

Although the Border received over eight millimetres of rain yesterday, firefighters say it won’t be enough to relieve the pressure.

WODONGA remains the fastest growing centre on the Border and surrounds, according to latest figures.

Bureau of Statistics population estimates released last week show Wodonga’s population has been boosted by 2.2 per cent to reach 38,131 in June last year.

This means an extra 814 people have called the city home since the same time in 2013.

Wodonga Council Chief Executive Officer Patience Harrington said the figures were in line with the city’s forecasted growth to reach 55,000 people in 2031.

“Not only do we have a great lifestyle here we have affordable housing options, employment opportunities and a central business area that is undergoing a major

transformation,” she said.

“We have a wonderfully diverse population and we look forward to continued growth and contribution to the vibrancy of our city.

“As a council, it is then our responsibility to continue to provide and maintain infrastructure and services to sustain that growing community.

“This is an exciting time to be living in Wodonga.”

Wodonga also continues to be the fastest-growing among the Regional Cities Victoria Group, growing faster than Ballarat (1.7 per cent), Greater Bendigo (1.6 per cent) and Greater Geelong (1.6 per cent).

Out of the 79 local government areas in Victoria, Wodonga is ranked 14th in terms of population growth rate.

THE ever-popular annual Flair Alatalo Baumatic Golf Day has once again proved a hit with participants, as crowds flocked to join in on the event.

Into its 11th year, the golf day was held at the Thurgoona Country Club Resort where participants enjoyed a breakfast, drinks, and an afternoon of golf and events under perfect autumn weather.

General manager of Flair Cabinets Ted Lawrence said the annual event, held in conjunction with Alatalo Bros and Baumatic, was always something that participants looked forward to and pencilled into their diaries.

“People really get their money’s worth on the day,” he said.

“It sells out in advance.”

The resort was close to capacity, with 160 people in attendance.

With 27 major sponsors on board and a strong turn-out, organisers are looking forward to donating proceeds to charity.

This year’s beneficiaries will include the new headspace for Albury Wodonga, the Thurgoona Junior Golf Development program, and Rotary Club for their Polio Plus program.

“All the money essentially has gone to local charities.

‘People can see where the money is going.”

Mr Lawrence, chief organiser of the event and its creator in 2005, said the resort was full of players and many had travelled interstate for the event.

“We have people flying down from Sydney and coming up from Melbourne.

“People come from everywhere to play.”

Youth explore space

By ERIN SOMERVILLE THURGOONA’S youths will soon have a place to call their own, as Youth Space prepares to open its doors later this month.

The space at Thurgoona Community Centre has been funded through grants from NSW Family and Community Services and AlburyCity, and will give the area’s newly formed Action Youth Leadership Group a place to work towards creating a better environment for local youth.

The group’s chairperson Heather Bruce said Youth Space would only further fuel the members’ enthusiasm.

“It’s a chance to give kids leadership skills and let them take over and give them a voice,” Ms Bruce said.

“Thurgoona is really growing, there are schools going up, and there are a lot of young people in the area.

“It’s a big growth area in Albury, and we don’t have huge problems with kids but you can see it just starting to happen in a little way with some graffiti and

Memorials for roadside review BORDER residents are being invited to share their views on roadside memorials in the lead-up to a review by VicRoads.

The VicRoads policy on roadside memorials has been in place for more than 15 years, and is being re-examined to meet with community expectations.

Some factors to be considered include safety, maintenance, and nearby residents.

“VicRoads recognises that some members of the community wish to mark the location of a fatal road crash on the road by a roadside memorial,” VicRoads Director of Policy and Standards Andrew Wall said.

“At the same time there are a number of considerations to be taken into account regarding the establishment of a roadside memorial.

“The review was prompted by feedback from members of the community and seeks to better support and respect the needs of all those affected by death on our roads.”

A MOTORIST allegedly caught driving at 170km/h on the Hume Highway at Holbrook has had his licence suspended and will face court.

Police said the 27-year-old man was caught speeding 60 kilometres over the limit at 5.49pm on Easter Saturday.

The charge comes as Albury Highway Patrol were spread thick on the roads over the Easter long weekend as part of the four-day Operation Tortoise, which also included double demerit points.

As of Monday afternoon, police had conducted over 6000 random breath tests, and had issued penalties for two seatbelt offences, 83 speeding offences, and 103 other offences.

“Obviously we have still got two weeks of school holidays, so we are reminding motorists to take their time, plan their trip, and ensure they are well rested,” Albury Highway Patrol’s Sergeant Daniel Finch said.

Police also caught a local man allegedly driving with a blood alcohol level of .211, as part of the operation.

The 33-year-old was pulled over by police on Wantigong Street in North Albury at 1.08am on Easter Sunday.

He has been charged and had his licence suspended, and will face local court.

IT'S evident Bill Witham (Check section 83, NewsWeekly, 18 March) has never seen those witnessing outside the Englehardt Street abortion clinic.

To describe them as “an unruly mob of warm fuzzy feeling, do-as-wewant radicals” is laughable. Ordinary Australians would be more accurate.

And resorting to four letter words to argue a case, exposes the weakness of an argument.

Has Mr Witham been in some sort of Rip van Winkle sleep? His grim warning of a totalitarian world where the most basic of human rights will be denied, where “due to population explosion ... contraception will be placed in the drinking water, or food we eat, and how many children we can have will be closely monitored by governments worldwide because of food shortage” echoes that of the Malthusian Paul Ehrlich and the ZPGers of the 1970s. They frightened people like Mr Witham into believing we would all be eating seaweed by the year 2000. Instead of malnutrition, it was obesity which was the emerging health problem in 2000.

Population “implosions” rather than “explosions”, serious population imbalance in China because of its forced abortion policy and its resultant targeting of female babies, are today’s problems.

Population controllers like Mr Witham never offer to vacate their spot on the planet for those who haven’t had a chance to enjoy it. The late former American President Ronald Reagan put it best ... I’ve noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born”.

Many colours of Anzac

By ERIN SOMERVILLE IT IS Beth Hawkins’ ties with the Australian military throughout her life that inspired her to mark the Anzac Centenary this year.

Having seen her first husband who was in the Australian Royal Corps of Military Police pass away in 2001, and having visited the shores of Gallipoli in 1989, the Border resident knew she wanted to be part of the Lest We Forget - 100 Years, 100 Quilts project.

The project, which will be shown at the Australiasian Quilt Convention from April 16 to 19, has been created to honour fallen soldiers at Gallipoli and to commemorate one of Australia’s most defining times.

Beth said she enjoyed being a part of the commemorative project.

“I’m really proud to be part of it for someone who has a lot to do with the defence forces and my kids have had a lot of support from Legacy,” she said.

“They’re lucky they have got a day once a year where they can think about their dad - a lot of kids don’t have that opportunity.”

It took Beth a week to design and create

the quilt utilising a variety of media including cotton, recycled furnishing fabrics and mettler threads and various techniques such as Photoshop, Bubble Jet Set Solution, applique and free motion quilting.

She wanted her design to acknowledge the memorial at Lone Pine created in 1934

by Ataturk, the Turkish president.

“It’s a beautiful tribute to the soldiers buried there.

“My quilt is also dedicated to my first husband, Damian Trevor who served in East Timor, before he passed away.

“I felt this would be a good opportunity for remembrance, especially for our two daughters and his family.”

Beth, who has quilted for more than 15 years, has made in excess of 10 quilts to date.

She credits the Border’s Monday Girls group for helping her develop her quilting skills.

‘They have taught me a lot,” she said.

The Australasian Quilt Convention is on at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne.

THINGS were just too hot in the kitchen at Wodonga TAFE when students snagged a taste of the cooking life as celebrity chef and My Kitchen Rules star Manu Fieldel dropped in on the class.

Mr Fieldel, who is also an ambassador for Murray Valley Pork that has strong ties with the local TAFE, watched closely as the class cooked a mouth-watering pork fillet, pea, asparagus and lemon risotto.

However, the delicious meal was almost a victim to the old adage of too many cooks in the kitchen, after a flash in the pan triggered the fire alarms and saw the local fire brigade come running.

Despite the small kitchen nightmare,

guests and Manu enjoyed a meal that satisfied even the fussiest tastes.

In addition to hanging with the celebrity chef, students also hosted food journalists who were in town for a tour of the Murray Valley Pork facilities and the Corowa-based farm.

Animal Welfare Programs Manager Rebecca Morrison was on hand to promote the company’s strong animal welfare practices.

“It was a great opportunity to show visiting media some of the great things our region has to offer,” she said, “From the topnotch facility at Albury Wodonga TAFE to Murray Valley Pork and its wonderful locally produced products.”

Minefields - fallout of war

By ERIN SOMERVILLE IT isn’t often remembered that war isn’t fought just on the battlefield.

As Australians commemorate the centenary of the Anzac landing of Gallipoli this month, the team at Livid Productions are taking the opportunity to highlight the vast effects of war through their moving production ‘Minefields and Miniskirts’.

This bittersweet drama tells the story of five very different female perspectives of the Vietnam War through the eyes of a veteran’s wife, a journalist, an entertainer, a nurse, and a volunteer.

Actor Narelle Parker said the play had been a moving and educational experience for all involved.

“In general, people don’t really realise what it was like in Vietnam, unless someone they knew was there.

“Because a lot weren’t accepted when they came back they didn’t

speak about it much, and you didn’t hear much about these experiences.”

The play has some empowering and light moments, but never strays far from the serious and dark ground that many involved in the Vietnam War still continue to tread today.

It also highlights the lack of support and resources people had at the time to help them cope with the severe mental health impacts brought on from war.

Livid Productions’ co-founder Liz Kolisnyk said she was inspired to run the production after being moved by its true stories several years.

“We want to dedicate the play to all Australian women who were involved in the Vietnam War, and wives and families of the Vietnam veterans,” she said.

“It’s about life-changing experiences.”

As part of the production, Livid will be donating some funds raised from the play to Legacy to help support families of soldiers who have served and died in war.

The play is being directed by a collaboration effort from director David Todd, and the cast- each bring their own rich input and perspective to enhance the show.

Music will also be provided by Pete Glover and Jason Parker, creating a beautiful mood to complement the production.

In a poignant year for Australia, it’s a great time to see Minefields and Miniskirts and enjoy the emotional ride of all aspects of war brought to life by the women who were there.

It’s playing on 16, 17, 18, 23 and 24 April at the Albury Entertainment Centre.

What is certain is that the Fast and Furious stunts have reached truly stratospheric heights - and flying metal is a key part of the appeal.

The look of pure joy on my

13-year-old son’s face as a raft of cars are about to exit the giant aircraft is indeed a sight to behold.

It’s big, it’s loud, it’s fast … and it’s oh so dumb.

All the corny lines are there: “Do me one favour … don’t miss.” Yep, The Rock really said that.

Jason Statham is the snarling villain: he stretches early credibility by winning a fistfight with The Rock. In the real world, Dwayne would have turned the weedy Pom into a protein shake … and used his femurs as toothpicks.

Plot? Oh, if you must. So, the F&F team’s gotta get the

gizmo stolen by the bad guys, so the government can … well, use it pretty much like the bad guys would’ve, I guess … but for good, right?

Along the way, all the fast cars find an excuse to visit Dubai … and everywhere else.

Some of the cracks from losing star Paul Walker mid-shoot to an unrelated car accident do show - but let’s be honest, it’s not exactly Shakespeare.

Will there be a Fast and Furious 8? Well, the record half a billion dollar opening tends to suggest - dead star or not - there most certainly will be.

Music back in the gardens

British India rocks CONGRATULATIONS to Melbourne’s indie rockers British India whose new album Nothing Touches Me rocketed into the ARIA Album Chart at #5 this week.

The impressive debut marks the band’s fourth consecutive ARIA Top 10 release, the first Australian rock band since Grinspoon to achieve such a feat.

They join the ranks of fellow local rock luminaries, The Living End and Powderfinger, who have also both achieved multiple consecutive Top 10 ARIA Album Chart entries.

This month, the rockers will be bringing their sound to Albury, in what is bound to be a great night out for fans.

In a career spanning 10 years, the four school friends from Melbourne have released five albums and scored seven entries into Triple J’s illustrious Hottest 100 countdown.

They won an AIR Award for their debut album Guillotine in 2007 and have also been nominated for ARIA Awards and a J Award since.

In 2012, they turned a new corner in their career, signing to Liberation Music. The band’s fourth album Controller became their most successful to date, spawning their first ever gold record for hit single ‘I Can Make You Love Me’.

Now, with singles ‘Wrong Direction’ and ‘Suddenly’ blasting the airwaves on alternative and rock radio, Nothing Touches Me sees the band at the peak of their powers.

British India will be hitting the Border this month. 137056 They have survived a tumultuous musical landscape and a tough decade for rock acts, emerging stronger than ever.

British India launch an extensive 18-date headline tour on 16 April that will see them traverse hundreds of kilometres, from Darwin in the north down to Hobart in the south.

ALBURY City’s popular Music in the Gardens returns on Sunday 19 April with one of Australia’s finest jazz singers, Michelle Nicolle as the headline act.

The 2015 autumn series also has a new corporate partner, with local business advisory and accounting practice, Johnsons MME teaming up with AlburyCity to bring the free monthly outdoor concerts to Albury.

“With the loss of funding from Arts NSW this year, Music in the Gardens was looking in doubt, so the support of a highly regarded professional firm such as Johnsons MME, is valued and we’re delighted to have them on board for the autumn series,” said AlburyCity Mayor, Kevin Mack.

Johnsons MME Managing Partner, Gary Essex said the firm had traditionally supported local sport, but when it heard Music in the Gardens had lost crucial funding, it did not hesitate to step in.

“AlburyCity has consistently brought artists of a high calibre to Albury as part of Music in the Gardens.

We felt that the event closely aligned with our high standards and wanted to ensure its longevity through being a funding partner,” Gary said.

Since it started in spring 2012, more than 14,000 people have enjoyed Sunday afternoons in the Botanic Gardens being entertained by highly acclaimed musicians and vocalists including the Grigoryan Brothers, Tinpan Orange, Galapagos Duck, Jane Rutter and the Sousaphonics.

The autumn series features the Michelle Nicolle Quintet, followed by Harry James Angus - trumpeter and founding member of The Cat Empire Band. Harry will be performing a rare solo performance in Albury on Sunday 17 May. 2015 concert dates: Sunday 19 April; Sunday 17 May; Sunday 20 September; Sunday 18 October; and Sunday 15 November.

Food and drinks are available for sale and BYO alcohol is permitted. Bring a picnic, relax on the lawn and enjoy the music.

Local Sport League breaks new ground

By ERIN SOMERVILLE BREAKING into the heart of AFL country can be challenging, but it is one Canberra Raider’s Sam Williams and his team weren’t baulking at as they brought first class rugby league to the Border.

A country boy himself, the Cooma-bred halfback knows how important it is to bring the game beyond the metropolitan boundaries.

“There’s no reason this can’t happen more often, it’s great to be taking the game to the country,” Williams said.

“It’s important that we look after our rugby league clubs, and Albury Thunder is certainly one of them and performing strongly in Group Nine.

“It’s doing really well in a fairly dominant AFL town.”

The Canberra team spent three days in Albury before the match training and getting to know their country fans.

The match pulled a crowd from across the Border and even deep into Group Nine Rugby League territory, with footy fans travelling from as far as Tumut and Gundagai to catch the game.

A total of 6500 spectators headed to the Saturday match at Lavington Oval as the teams who were both locked at just two points on the ladder battled it out on the field for a much-needed victory.

Manly was unable to bounce back from its poor start to the season despite Albury serving as its home turf for the night, going down 29-16 against Canberra.

The 2011 premiership winners have now been knocked to the bottom of the NRL ladder.

The Ovens and Murray Teal team jump in the pool with the Australian Stingers. 137261 THE Border continues to make its mark on the national sporting map after its Ovens and Murray team successfully hosted its first under-14s national water polo championships.

The Wodonga WAVES complex was inundated with 23 teams from across the country to take part in the round robin tournament.

The O&M Teal girls brought some of the best skills to the competition, coach Peter Nugent said.

“An awesome week where they showed plenty of ticker against some of the best sides in Australia,” he said.

O&M Teal beat a tough Central Coast side and

continued their winning streak against the Phantoms from Perth, placing them 2nd in their pool.

This second place position progressed them into the championship round.

After a series of extremely tough losses to very good sides, the girls finished the tournament with a convincing 7-3 victory over St Rita’s (Brisbane), placing them 11th in the tournament overall. While the Teal team was the most experienced of the two O&M teams entered, the Black team coached by O&M’s own Kristy Hogan gave the chance for a development squad of girls to challenge themselves every game.

“It was great to see these young ladies turn up with a smile everyday and are a team of the future,” she said.

“These girls are experiencing their first waterpolo tournament, and it won’t be the last if the way they played was any indication.“ The event brought over $1 million to the local economy, heralding an outstanding start to a strong relationship between waterpolo and the two councils - Albury and Wodonga.

A highlight for the team was meeting the Australian Stingers, who oversaw training and offered some handy tips to reaching their A game.
