Holy Fools and van parted

By JESSE GRAHAM A CALLOUS theft of supplies for the homeless last month has sparked a surge in public support and donations to stricken Lilydale charity, Holy Fools.

The Swansea Road charity was broken into on the weekend of 2223 March and thousands of dollars in equipment and food was stolen, along with a 2003 Toyota HiAce van, which had extensive Holy Fools branding.

Since then, Holy Fools’ Chief Executive Neal Taylor said the community had come out in support of the charity, with $700 in food for homeless people and fund-raisers replaced and more cash donations coming in.

On Thursday 2 April, Lilydale

Coles ran a fund-raiser for the charity, and Mr Taylor said it was just the latest in an outpouring of support.

“We’re finding that the community response has been fantastic,” he said.

“People have been dropping food and donations off, coming in and having a chat – it’s been great.

“The response really has been overwhelming – I’m thankful that, if anything has come out of this, the community is now much more aware of what we do and more supportive.”

An iMac computer, three printers, the building’s phone system, 10 backpack beds for homeless people, $700 in food for homeless people and even the vacuum cleaner and bin were taken in the theft, along with the van.

News of the theft spread rapidly through local and metropolitan press and on social media, with people posting their sightings of the van in Healesville in the days following the break-in.

When workers at Telstra heard about the theft, they rallied their colleagues and approached Mr Taylor to organise a replacement phone.

As for the van, Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit Detective Sergeant Mark Smithwick said police had no new leads, and Mr Taylor said the last sighting was in Mansfield - some 150 kilometres away.

He said the organisation was struggling without the van, but sees the matter as a small setback, and one that is slowly getting better.

“But we’re slowly managing – it is more of a hiccup than a downfall.”

People power drives safety

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM PEOPLE power has brought about improved road safety at a Mount Evelyn intersection.

On Friday 12 February, MP for Evelyn Christine Fyffe tabled a community petition calling for improvements to a Mount Evelyn intersection.

A fatality at a bend near the Monbulk Road and Hunter Road intersection left many in the area concerned about safety.

An 18-year-old female driver was killed when her car collided with a tree on the road in November 2013.

Ms Fyffe said she received a positive response to the petition.

“I am pleased to advise that I

have received a response from the Minister for Roads and Road Safety, stating that VicRoads have reviewed the fatal crash from a road engineering perspective and found changes are necessary,” she said.

“Improvements will be made to the road signage and existing guide posts, with the treatments expected to be delivered by June 2015.”

“Until then I urge people using the stretch of road to exercise caution and drive responsibly to avoid another accident.”

She went on to congratulate the local community for their initiative in fixing the local issue.

“The people of Mount Evelyn have shown that if you really care about an issue, by getting others involved you can have an impact.”

In brief Burglary ring THREE people have been arrested and will face court after a residential burglary in Mount Evelyn last month.

On 24 March, between 8am-3pm, the trio is believed to have forced their way into a Warrawee Road property, taking guitars, jewellery and cash.

A 34-year-old Dandenong man, a 34-year-old woman and a 26-year-old Bayswater man were arrested in regards to the burglary.

The Dandenong man will appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 2 June, while the woman will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 3 August and the Bayswater man will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on 23 April.

School computer theft POLICE are appealing for information after five computers were stolen from Monbulk Secondary College.

On Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 March, unknown people broke into Monbulk Secondary College on David Hill Road, stealing five iMac computers, each worth about $1000.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to call Lilydale Crime Investigation Unit on 9739 2300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Aggravated burglary KNOX Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for public assistance after an aggravated burglary in Ferntree Gully last February.

At about 1am on Friday 27 February, a lone person broke into the garage of a Rankin Road property by breaking a padlock on a side door.

Two residents who were home at the time went to investigate, and the burglar was confronted before he ran down Virginia Way. He was chased for a short distance before pulling out a large knife and threatening the residents.

The offender, described as a Caucasian man in his forties, around 190cm tall and having a solid build, dark hair and eyes, red blemished skin and a wispy moustache, fled towards Florida Avenue.

He was wearing a black baseball cap, dark jacket and dark pants.

By KATH GANNAWAY PEOPLE power and petrol power are the driving force behind a massive $23,643 donation made to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal over Easter.

Organiser of the Wandin Custom Car and Bike Show, Sindy Vitale, delivered the huge cheque to the appeal.

She said it was a great day for Wandin and for all the people who contributed by attending the monthly car shows at East Wandin Reserve over the last six months.

There was more good news to come with Sindy and co-organisers, husband Tony, and Annie and Stewart Johnson, announcing that Wandin community groups who took

part in the event had also raised a phenomenal amount.

Wandin CFA raised $12,000, Wandin Yallock Primary School $4000, Wandin Rotary $2153 and St Mary’s Primary School $4500.

“That brings our total this season to nearly $50,000 for the local community and to help the kids at the Royal Children’s Hospital, and a big part of that is due to the very generous sponsors who help get this event off the ground each year.

“It was an amazing season and way beyond what we ever dreamed of when the show started with just 56 cars in the car park at the Wandin North shopping centre six years ago,” Sindy said.

Sports clubs are key I KNOW it’s been said before, but in my time as mayor I’ve been struck by just how important sporting clubs are to the Yarra Ranges communities.

Sport – whether it’s soccer, football, cricket or netball – is really the lifeblood of our towns.

It connects young people and families and provides a positive outlet for fostering community, healthy activity and a sense of belonging.

In areas of the Yarra Ranges that are more socially isolated, sporting clubs are often the difference in

young people thriving and feeling engaged in their community.

The more than 350 sporting clubs in the Yarra Ranges are really an example of community partnerships in action.

To ensure games and training

sessions run smoothly each week, the clubs partner with council, local business, volunteers and families.

Without this whole-of-community approach, the clubs could not enjoy their success.

Council is proud to provide and maintain the facilities for these clubs – ovals, pavilions and courts and support to support them in any way we can.

Another vital aspect of sporting clubs is the corporate sponsorship they rely on.

I’d like to thank the local busi-

nesses who commit to supporting these sporting groups each season.

We know volunteers are the lifeblood of our community in so many ways, including at sporting clubs where they give up their time to serve on committees and operate canteens.

And parents, what would sporting clubs do without parents who take their children to training and games each weekend – rain, hail or shine.

On behalf of council, I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’.

“I was working in Upwey and a friend called to tell me they were building a new Catholic school in Monbulk, and she suggested I apply for the job of secretary,” she said.

“I was successful, and I started work at the same time as the school opened with 127 students.”

That was almost 30 years ago.

Last week, Mrs Mitchell handed in the keys, said goodbye to staff and students - some of whose parents were children at the school when she started - and headed out to start the next phase of her life.

St Paul’s classrooms covered a third of it’s present day size for the same number of students, and Mrs Mitchell saw enrolments rise to 200 in

the early 1990s before they receded back to the current 140.

In a quirky twist of fate, one of the students in Year 6 at the inception later became Mrs Mitchell’s daughter-in-law.

St Paul’s principal, Frank Dame, said Mrs Mitchell had been the welcoming ‘face’ of the school and a much-loved staff member.

“The amazing thing is that while the workload of the ladies in the school office has increased exponentially during the past 30 years, Mrs Mitchell always kept abreast of the latest developments and never appeared flustered,” he said.

“The only thing that made her grumble was when St Kilda performed poorly.”

Clarke stepping up

By JESSE GRAHAM HE WAS last week’s election winner and, as of tonight, he will be the official Lyster Ward councillor.

The Mail sat down with councillor-elect Mike Clarke on Tuesday 31 March, after his first day at the Yarra Ranges Council offices in Lilydale came to a close.

Cr Clarke said he had been welcomed by mayor Maria McCarthy and council CEO, Glenn Patterson, and already set up with a new mobile phone for his job, one day after being declared the winner of the ward’s by-election.

The by-election was initiated after previous-councillor, Samantha Dunn, won the Eastern Metropolitan seat in Victoria’s Upper House in November’s State Election.

Residents voted on Friday 27 March and Cr Clarke was officially declared the winner on Monday 30 March, with 4632 votes - a lead of 1515 on Greens-endorsed candidate, Kate Gutske.

Cr Clarke told the Mail that he was formerly a member of the Greens party, having been their endorsed candidate for the Yarra Ranges general elections in 2012 for the Streeton Ward and again in last year’s State Election for the seat of Monbulk.

But Ms Gutske was the party’s preselected candidate for the Lyster election, so Cr Clarke had to resign before announcing his candidacy as an Independent.

“The pre-selection selected Kate, and Samantha (Dunn) was keen to support her,” Cr Clarke said.

“That’s fine, that’s their choice.

“But there was a number of other people that asked me to stand as well - other leaders of the community called me out to consider standing.”

Along with this, his environmental interests meant that votes could be consolidated between candidates with similar views - Ms Gutske was Cr Clarke’s third preference as candidate, after himself and Jeff Springfield.

As he was no longer tied to a political party, Cr Clarke could be independent on issues in the area and not forced to toe party lines when it may contradict the community’s needs.

“With a small community, there’s always a full mix of political allegiances and, being a small community, it’s better to be independent and support all interests,” he said.

“I still hold Green’s environmental policies and principles at heart - I’ve had that since the ’70s when I did environmental science and it goes way before the Greens even existed - but I want to move strongly to be supportive of all interests.”

Another idea for his stint in council would be to establish a reference group, Leaders in Lyster, where community members, including the other by-election candidates, could meet monthly to discuss areas of interest in the hills.

“I’d like to have that connection

with the community directly, and to be steered and advised and kept informed,” Cr Clarke said.

Cr Clarke will be sworn in as Lyster Ward councillor at tonight’s special Yarra Ranges Council meeting.

All councillors, including Cr Clarke, will stand for re-election in the council’s general elections in October 2016.

YARRA Ranges firefighter Mick Tisbury has commended the State Government on closing the CFA’s Fiskville training facility for good.

Minister for Emergency Services, Jane Garrett, announced the closure on Thursday, 26 March, following tests that showed high levels of the toxic chemical PROS around the fire training area and in an area where the chemical had not been previously detected.

The CFA board unanimously recommended the closure after receiving the most recent results of more than 500 tests.

The Mail reported earlier in March that Mr Tisbury, an MFB firefighter and executive member of the United Firefighters’ Union, had been pushing for a thorough investigation into the use of toxic materials and water contamination for three years.

He welcomed the temporary closure of Fiskville at the time, but last week expressed relief that the government had acted decisively and quickly on the latest test results.

Those results did show that the drinking water and showers were clear of contamination, but that other areas were not.

A statement from the Minister’s office said tests showed the PFOS levels ranged from less than 1 microgram per litre to as high as 50 micrograms per litre against international guidelines for safe levels of the chemical in drinking water of 0.2 micrograms, and 4 micrograms for non-drinking water.

Ms Garrett said despite previous cleanups, Fiskville remained a dangerous site which could no longer operate safely.

She said the closure marked the end of a ‘dark chapter’ in Victoria’s fire-fighting services.

“While we are relieved that the drinking water is safe, the ongoing discovery of contamination at Fiskville means it can no longer operate as a training ground,” she said.

Mr Tisbury said he had expected permanent closure, but was surprised that the decision had been made while the Parliamentary Inquiry into Fiskville was underway.

“I wasn’t privilege to the test results that came back at such a high level, but they didn’t surprise me. I’ve seen others that were even higher,” he said.

He commended the government, saying they had put the lives of peple ahead of other interests.

“This government has acted quickly, and correctly.

“I am sure that once people start hearing and seeing the evidence (to the inquiry) they will be thankful for this government for doing what the previous government should have done,” he said.

Submissions to the inquiry closed last week and hearings are scheduled to start in May.

Bikes not safe in hills I AM all in favour of bike riding where it reduces our dependency on the use of cars.

However, when it comes to pure exercising, they should be banned from roads where it is unsafe for them to ride.

The roads in the Dandenongs are far too narrow to allow safe bike riding.

The local residents are greatly inconvenienced by the hordes of tourists, in cars, that descend on us on a fine weekend.

Why do we also have to put up with lycra louts who are just here for a bit of exercise?

There are plenty of ways of exercising without placing themselves in danger and making an extreme inconvenience to the people who live here.

To suggest they pay anything for the upkeep of the roads in our area is wrong.

They generally are not residents of our shire, do not pay registration and TAC insurance, and usually ride on roads that are maintained by VicRoads, not the shire.

Because they choose to undertake a dangerous sport, why do the rest of us have to be greatly inconvenienced?

Metre rule needs more thought UNFORTUNATELY, Samantha Dunn has not thought out the ‘A metre matters’ very well.

What is being proposed will work quite well, where the road has two or more lanes each way, providing plenty of room for a car driver to move aside.

However, the majority of roads in the east have one lane in each direction.

the centreline, which will be a huge embarrassment when a car coming in the opposite direction needs to do the same to clear a bicycle on their side.

Apparently, Samantha Dunn regards the safety of the cyclist to be more important than the motorist’s well-being.

Too narrow for metre rule SAMANTHA Dunn raises the problem of cyclist and driver safety on the roads.

While it may be practicable for drivers to give cyclists one to one and a half metres clearance, when overtaking in the suburbs, and where bicycle lanes are provided, it would be dangerous on roads in the Dandenongs, as James Merlino suggests.

Our mountain roads are far too narrow and winding for this to be possible, particularly when cyclists ride two abreast.

There is often already no room to pass without crossing the centreline and I have seen frequent near-misses, with both cyclists and approaching traffic.

Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, Mountain Highway from The Basin to Sassafras and Belgrave-Gembrook Road are the worst affected.

It would alleviate the problem if cyclists used mountain bikes when riding on the hills roads.

Apparently using racing bikes means they are unable to get off the tarmac to give drivers room to pass safely.

There are also many purpose-built bicycle paths which could be used.

Cyclists who wish to avoid accidents would be wise to find alternative routes for their weekend rides.

By JESSE GRAHAM WHEN Samantha Dunn left the Yarra Ranges Council’s Lyster Ward, there was much discussion and speculation on what would come next.

Who would replace her?

How would they be aligned politically? Would there be another Greens councillor in Lyster, or would there be a shift towards a more conservative representative in the hills?

Enter Mike Clarke.

A former Greens member and passionate environmentalist, he ran with the party for a council election in 2012 and the state election last year – both unsuccessfully.

He split from the party in order to run for Lyster this year, as the Greens preselected another candidate, and in a sit-down interview, told me he thought the move was for the best.

Cr Clarke, who will be sworn

in at tonight’s Yarra Ranges Council meeting, said he felt separating from the Greens would allow him to make open and independent council decisions, instead of toeing a party line.

Though he is still a firm environmentalist –- and one of over 40 years at that - he said he wanted to represent his community, and meet people from all points on the political spectrum.

But the moment the news hit the Mail’s Facebook page, the only comment on the story was one criticising Cr Clarke for being aligned with the Greens in the past.

This is an entirely OK thing – the allegiances of politicians should be open for discussion and criticism, particularly when it influences decisions made that affect the community.

And it is for this reason, among others, many people will watch with interest when

Cr Clarke takes his seat in the council chambers and puts his vote forward on matters.

His independence means he has the option to veer from party lines when it may benefit the community – though ultimately the decision is his on where he thinks Lyster’s vote should go.

His personal politics also contribute to the diverse nature of council – a whole range of political ideas are represented in our nine councillors, and that allows for most viewpoints to have a voice in council.

Tony Abbott said, somewhat controversially, that it is the public that hires and fires politicians. Lyster has the benefit of having 18 months’ probation before the ward heads to the polls again.

For better, or for worse, Lyster’s vote is now in Cr Clarke’s hands – see what he does with it before casting any stones.

Almost every sunrise, the mist has sat beautifully among the renowned ranges hills, creating spectacular, ever-changing landscapes. This has inspired some happysnappers in our region. One early riser was John deBoer, who captured this image of a cluster of air balloons floating over the mist-laden mountain-scape at Christmas Hills, just near the Sugarloaf Reservoir. EIGHTY local children will ring handbells to remember local Anzac heroes in a community performance and exhibition later this month.

‘Bells of Peace’ tells the stories of men from the Casey and Cardinia electorates who went to war and the families they left behind.

Local schools, historical societies and RSL clubs have come together to tell the stories through music, drama, images and visual art displays.

Choirs of both adults and children will sing traditional songs from World War I and a new instrumental and choral work by Brian Hogg, entitled ‘Sons of Anzac.’

Actors from The Basin Theatre Group will also perform, depicting famous Australians of history including Dame Nellie Melba, as well as local unsung heroes such as Mrs Gunn from Monbulk.

Elizabeth Harvey from Wandin is making a banner to be carried down Main Street by the Lilydale Football Club at the performance, in what will be a re-enactment of the recruitment parade 100 years ago.

Crucial animal aid ANIMAL Aid is a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation with shelters in Coldstream, Bairnsdale and Sale.

To complement their welfare work, they also have pet dog training, a commercial boarding facility, veterinary clinic and grooming salon.

All profits from these businesses are directed back to assist animals in need.

Animal Aid operates as an open-door shelter and provides refuge and the chance to find a new home to homeless pets.

Their primary aim is to responsibly re-home as many pets as they can.

Debra Boland said the business aimed to please.

“Animal Aid is an organisation that chooses to be great, not big,” she said.

“We aim to provide service that supports all aspect of pet ownership.

“We have all the basic items that a pet owner may require.”

Ms Boland said the biggest attraction was the animals that were available for adoption.

“They have found themselves here for many reasons and all have an individual story,” she said.

“They come in all shapes, species and sizes.

“Most are cats and dogs, but we also have rabbits, guinea pigs, goats, sheep, pigs, poultry and, occasionally, exotic birds.”

Animal Aid prides itself on encouraging the community to be more responsible in relation to pet ownership.

This includes promoting the importance of desexing as well as informing people about the importance of considering adopting a pet, over purchasing.

Animal Aid receives no government funding and relies on the support of the communities in which they operate.

With community help, both through volunteer efforts and financial contributions, they are able to help about 6000 pets each year.

The business has 35 part time and full time staff, with a 350-strong volunteer crew.

Time to get cross fit WITH summer well and truly gone, Yarra Ranges athletes is looking forward to the winter cross country season.

Yarra Ranges Athletics club holds weekly cross country events each Saturday morning. There is an event for everyone, from five years old to 105 years old, and a distance from 500m to 5000m held on varied terrain around the parklands of the Yarra Valley.

This season’s opening round is on Saturday 11 April, at Morrison Reserve, Mount Evelyn, from 8.45am.

Everyone is welcome.

The club’s senior athletes are preparing for the opening round of the Athletics Victoria XCR15 season on Saturday 18 April, the cross country relays at Jells Park.

Ensure you have registered with Athletics Victoria to be eligible to run on the day; go to www.athsvic.org. au to register.

THE VGL April monthly medal was up for the taking at Emerald Golf Club last Saturday.

Despite the Easter festivities occurring, a bunch of ordinarily good golfers rolled up, keen to add to their trophy cabinets.

It was John Carvill (21) who scooped the pool and his nett 62 was easily good enough for B Grade and the entire field.

A Grade turned out to be a three-way countback, with these golfers all coming in with 67.

After the abaci were consulted it emerged that Broc Reynolds (14) was the winner from Dennis Fuller (16) and Mike Litchfield (11).

Of the rest, it was left to Peter Clowes (17) to play well for 66 followed by Jeff Marsh (25) with 69.

Ian Cranston was nearest the pin on the 4th.

As a matter of fact he was just

a few centimetres away from acing the hole.

He doubled up with the 13th, Ken Hill the 7th, Reynolds the 13th and Hill, once again, slipped the pro pin dough into his wallet.

Raelene Pund was a runaway winner in the ladies comp from quite a disappointing field at a reasonable distance back in second place.

On Wednesday, when the Obviously Faded Golfers staggered in, they were greeted with the announcement that the game was stableford.

Geoff Whittaker (26) let out a ‘whoop’ and proceeded to amass 48 stableford points to romp home in first place.

The handicapper was heard to whoop also with the opportunity to prune his handicap with a chainsaw.

Conditions must have suited as Ian Scott (25) had 44, Litchfield (10) had a three-over-par round for 43 and Peter Clowes (42 to finish in next place).

Hunt proves a good egg THE free Easter egg treasure hunt at Emerald Lake Park turned out to be an enormously wellreceived event on Sunday.

Amid the beautiful surrounds, and amazing autumn weather, the crowds didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let the organisers down, turning out in droves for the event.

Families from the area, the region and even abroad ventured to the park to undertake the treasure quest.

In order to receive their collection of delicious Easter eggs, participants were required to gather their forms from the Emerald Lake Park Cafe.

On the form was a series of six questions, which the treasure-hunters had to answer.

These questions were specific to some of the iconic sites at the park, including the model railway and the environment centre.

Thus, many children and parents took an educational tour of the park, before enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and a healthy helping of Easter eggs.
