The late Father O’Donnell – who was the Dandenong parish priest between 1956 and 1969 – was convicted of indecent assault against 12 children in 1995.

Victims, boys and girls as young as eight, spanned his 50-year career.

One included a 15-year-old altar boy he molested in the Dandenong parish’s presbytery on the day its 24-metre white cross was installed in 1958.

Chris McIsaac, president of Broken Rites - a group that advocates for victims of church-related sexual assault said it was a “great tragedy” if “iconic churches” were being deliberately burnt.

POLICE have played down links between convicted paedophile priest Kevin O’Donnell and a suspicious blaze that damaged one of Dandenong’s biggest churches last Wednesday.

The St Mary’s Catholic Church, erected in 1959, was damaged by two fires – one at the altar and one in the sacristy – about 2.30am.

Father Declan O’Brien said the blaze left him feeling “sick”.

“It’s not a good feeling,” Fr O’Brien said as he surveyed the damage with a group of stunned parishoners on Wednesday morning.

He said he felt he and the church were an “innocent victim” of the suspected arson attack.

“We’re not sure of the motivation of the person or persons behind this.”

The sacristy – an out-building storage area for vestments and silverware as well as a workshop and kitchen was extensively damaged with flames burning through the floor.

Its roof was torn open by firefighters in a bid to save the double-brick structure.

The fires closely followed suspicious blazes at two Catholic churches in Brighton and St Kilda East in recent days.

Accused paedophile priest Ronald Dennis Pickering had been a priest at both churches.

Last weekend’s Easter services, which normally attract several thousand worshippers, were moved to the nearby St Mary’s Primary School hall.

Greater Dandenong councillor John Kelly, one of St Mary’s 3000 parishioners and former altar-boy, said any vendetta theories were speculation.

Fake gamble fails

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A HEROIN addict has received a suspended jail sentence and been fined $2000 after passing off counterfeit $50 notes at Keysborough Hotel’s pokies venue last year.

Nathan Dinh of Springvale South pleaded guilty to counterfeit-related charges as well as drug, traffic and weapon charges at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday last week.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Liz Millear told the court that Dinh had traded

two of his four notes to play poker machines on 21 October, but was pulled up on this second attempted exchange.

“All had a serial number and were easily identified as counterfeit,” Sen Const Millear said.

Dinh was also found with ammunition and a flick-knife in his jeans although he was not licensed or registered to own weapons.

He told police he was given the notes and ammunition by friends and that he didn’t realise it was an offence to hold ammunition.

In May 2013, police seized two grams of heroin, two small deal bags of ice, ammunition, a sword, knuckledusters and two laptop computers from Dinh’s home.

The accused told police he purchased the drugs for friends, keeping a portion as payment.

The traffickable quantity of heroin was for his own use, he told police.

Dinh’s lawyer told the court the accused had lapsed into “much higher use of drugs” after losing his job.

He had since returned to part-time

work and was in a steady relationship.

Magistrate Barry Schultz said he was concerned by a psychological assessment that found Dinh had no plan to rid himself of a long-term heroin addiction.

“The desire for change has to come from him.

“I’m inclined to impose a jail term wholly suspended and let it hang over his head.”

Dinh declined to go on a community corrections order, so was sentenced to three months’ jail wholly suspended for 24 months.

Drum role brings comedy pair back with a bang

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS THERE’S a feeling of a full circle for Springvale-born actor Diana Nguyen as she prepares for her Drum Theatre debut.

She and long-time friend Fiona Chau finish their final stage-tour of their comedy Phi and Me at the Dandenong theatre this month.

“We want to finish with a bang back where we began,” the exuberant comedian said.

It’s the original show - with some pathos added to the slapstick misunderstandings between Vietnamese and “dragon mum“ (Nguyen) and her Australian-born teenage son (Chau).

Nguyen explains that the extra layers was an extension of the actors’ softening views since they first played it for laughs and sold out at Melbourne’s international comedy festivals.

“I’m proud of the show. It’s what the original show should have been.

“Audience members say that the new scene made them reflect what the

mother had gone through (when they arrived in Australia).”

She said there was also some poignancy in the recent death of former prime minister Malcolm Fraser, who ushered in thousands of Vietnamese refugees in the 1970s.

His death, close to the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, was been marked with gratitude by the Vietnamese community, Nguyen said.

Phi and Me meanwhile is set to regenerate into an internet-based series - crowd-funded by 65 donors.

The plan is to connect these characters to a wider overseas audience.

“I would love to keep performing the (stage) show but theatre does take a lot of energy. There’s only so much time we can keep performing like that.”

Beefed-up security Teens on the trail stamps out fights

A JEWELLERY thief tried to lead police back to the scene of his crime in Dandenong North but took them to the wrong place because he couldn’t remember which house he burgled.

Greater Dandenong CIU Senior Constable Ben Robertson is now searching for the owners of a gold-coloured necklace and earring set and four gold-coloured rings.

On 25 March, police found a man near Waratah Avenue and Gladstone Road, Dandenong North, with the jewellery.

“He took us to the house where he stated he had taken the jewellery from,” Sen Const Robertson said.

“But our inquiries with the owner revealed that they hadn’t had their premises broken into, and they don’t own the jewellery that we’ve located.“ Sen Const Robertson said the thief was on foot, so probably burgled a house nearby.

“The offender said he left the house in the same state he found it so it could be possible that the victim doesn’t even know their items are missing.”

A GROUP of teens are suspected of lighting a grass fire in Dandenong South.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars said fire crews were called to the Dandenong Creek Trail near Stephen Street just after 3pm on 30 March.

He said about eight to 10 youths in their mid to late teens were seen in the area just before the fire started. Dandenong CFA attended and extinguished the blaze.

GREATER Dandenong Council has declared a two-week trial of extra security measures at Dandenong Civic Centre a success.

Jody Bosman, the council’s city planning, design and amenity director, reported “no further significant incidents” during the trial - which included extra highly-visible guards and police patrols in the civic and library precinct.

There had been mounting concern over rising mob violence in the precinct including a mass brawl in the civic square and a stabbing and assault nearby last month.

“Council and Victoria Police have worked in close partnership to ensure no further incidents would occur,” Mr Bosman said. “That partnership has been very successful, with no further significant incidents being reported.”

The council would continue to work closely with police “to ensure inappropriate behaviour and/or criminal acitivity is kept to an absolute minimum in public areas of the municipality”.

Horror stories from the scary city’s streets WE HEARD every scary story imaginable from the big kids and some immature adults intent on frightening the daylights out of us.

And this they did, for when we were at such an innocent and impressionable age, beginning to explore Our Place, we were very susceptible to these mythical tales of horror about the buildings and streets of central Dandenong.

They could not frighten us about the bush, however, for we were born to the bush from generations of men and women who had pioneered Gippsland and Heathcote and parts of New South Wales.

However, with the buildings of Our Place, we were not yet experienced

enough to understand the mysteries and myths that surrounded them.

We soon learnt to sneak past Laurel Lodge where the Witch sat in the bay window weaving nets of cobwebs and watching, through black horn-rimmed glasses, down the gravel driveway to Langhorne Street.

She was always clad in a long black dress with a high collar and on her

head was a small bonnet tied beneath her chin with black ribbon.

A hat pin the size of a small stiletto with a large emblem at the end pierced the bonnet and over her shoulders she wore a black three-quarter length cloak with a stand-up collar tied at the throat with black ribbon.

The story was that if you did not cross the road to the old police station house and jail she would direct her goblins and lackeys, who lived in the giant Moreton Bay Fig trees, to jump out and throw their sticky nets of heavy woven cobwebs over us.

They would then drag us up the driveway into the cellar of Laurel Lodge where the witch would keep us imprisoned until she was ready to give

us the Hansel and Gretel test.

We were also told that the old underground brick well out the back had no water in it and that this was where she kept kids when she had too many for the cellar.

We also avoided the thick bush that grew within the grounds of Laurel Lodge.

Goblins lived there, but were controlled by the good spirits next door at St James.

We avoided the east side of Langhorne Street on our way to Crump’s Store or the old post office unless mum asked us to cut through the school and through the connecting back gate of Merlin, a private hospital run by Sister Ahern.

She was a close friend of mum and dad and we often picked up goods or prescriptions for her from Mr Titcher’s chemist shop in the main street.

Sadly, Titcher’s did not escape the scary stories.

We were convinced by the big kids that there was a mad scientist, like Dr X in the movies, who worked for Fu Man Chu and who came at night, after Mr Titcher went home, to make evil concoctions.

When we became older and more worldly, we discovered the Witch of Laurel Lodge was a kindly old lady sitting in the sun in the bay window crocheting woollen shawls, not cobweb nets.

50 years ago 31 March 1965 Car Parking rear Rail Station A DEPUTATION to the Minister of Transport is seen by the Dandenong City Council as the only way the Victorian Railways can be influenced to allow its land at the Dandenong Station to be used for car parking.

At the last meeting of the council, Cr Ian Fotheringham said that the council was providing facilities for the greater proportion of railway travellers at the station.

“The Railways should provide sufficient parking space for their patrons”, he said.

“This would allow council to clear congested roads, Foster St is a shambles now and is getting worse.

“We must get cars parked on the

sides off the road and the only way we can do this is to get the use of Railway land on the north side of the railway.”

5 years ago 29 March 2010 Workers urged to get tested GREATER Dandenong workers have been urged to lay off the pies and chips and start exercising. Work Health figures revealed after more than 2000 workers were tested, close to half were at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

Other results from the work health program for Greater Dandenong showed that; 94% weren’t eating enough fruit and vegetables, 79% were not getting enough exercise and 21% smoked.

Work Health has partnered with Myer in Dandenong to offer checks in store.

LOOKING BACK 100 years ago 8 April 1915 The War Recruiting Public Meeting at Dandenong THE Dandenong Branch of the ANA Friendly Society initiated a movement to hold a public meeting at the Town Hall in order to arouse enthusiasm in the recruiting of volunteers for the Expeditionary Forces, and Thursday evening the hall was crowded with an enthusiastic audience.

A torchlight procession, marshalled by Lieut Boyd, comprising members of the local battalion infantry, the cadets (in charge of Lieut Veal), and members of the fire brigade marched from the fire station to the town hall, and gave a display of fireworks en route.

Sir William Irvine KCMG addressed the gathering.

“I have addressed many meetings in this hall, but tonight we must treat the subject with much anxiety.

“There are no politics here tonight. We all belong to one political party - the party of Australia and the Empire.

“When I received an invitation to address you here tonight I felt it a duty of those advancing in years to take their share. It is our duty to do what we can to raise the enthusiasm and to waken the knowledge of the people who are gathered here.

“I am not at all sure, even now, whether the people of Australia have yet realised the extreme critical nature of the struggle in which we are engaged.“

Receipts for search

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS GREATER Dandenong’s Inspector Bruce Kitchen has said he is “willing to try” a criticised business cardstyle receipt system.

Under a trial up to the end of the year, police and PSOs in Greater Dandenong will issue receipts when they stop a person.

The initiative came in the wake of a 2013 Federal Court settlement over Victoria Police members alleg-

edly ‘racially profiling’ six AfricanAustralians – that is stopping and searching them more often on the basis of their race.

The receipts have been criticised by the Police Association for creating more paperwork.

Springvale-Monash Legal Service community development worker Kei Judd said the receipts should have recorded the ethnicity of people stopped by police.

“Without that data, it will be dif-

ficult to determine if racial profiling is still occurring."

She said there were benefits such as encouraging police to have a “reasonable excuse“ – and to give clear reasons - for stopping people.

Inspector Kitchen said he was unable to comment on the design of the receipts.

“I’m willing to try any initiative that will increase the confidence of the multicultural community in the police.

“My thinking is it will help the police better understand the community, and vice versa.”

The receipt includes the date, time, location and reason for the police contact, the police member’s registered number and police station.

Springvale-Monash Legal Service is also running a website, stopwatchvic.org.au, for people to give feedback when they are stopped by police.

Tour united by faith in cultural awareness POLICE will take bus tours around Greater Dandenong to connect with different cultures.

Southern Metro Region Inspector Ron Gardner will send at least two officers on each Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network Places of Worship tour under a new partnership.

“The community is growing in its cultural diversity,” he said.

“We need to make sure that the police that work in that area have as much understanding as they can.”

Insp Gardner said the officers who took part would be those who were most likely to influence their peers.

“Gradually the knowledge and diversity will flow through,” he said.

“Police are drawn from

the community, but may not have experiences with all other cultures. We need to equip them,” he said.

The Interfaith Network’s

Helen Heath said the tours had been taking place for 22 years and were held every second month.

They included visits to temples, mosques, indigenous sacred sites and churches.

“Some people can be quite anxious about people in uniform and people in authority because of where they’ve come from and what they’ve been through,” Ms Heath said.

“When everybody’s educated, that anxiety is lessened.”

“If you do that, I’ll personally come down and strangle you,” the magistrate said - with a hint of jest.

AN AIR of mystery surrounded a driver fined last week for careless driving.

Dandenong Magistrates’ Court was told a witness saw the man’s four-wheel-drive veer left as it mounted speed humps in Springvale South.

On one occasion, the vehicle collected a light post, on another deviation it crashed through a house’s wall.

Police say no drugs or alcohol were consumed.

When released from hospital, the man told police he had a migraine at the time that may have caused him to pass out.

The magistrate said the incident must have been an aberration but it was a “significant deviation from the standard of care”.

The man was convicted and fined $1200.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS MORE than 60 south-east manufacturers are among the potential winners from a State Government plan for extra trains and fewer level crossings on the Dandenong rail corridor.

The government announced last week that it will buy 37 trains and that each of them would carry 20 per cent more passengers than current trains when they come into service from 2018.

South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance executive director Adrian Boden said the boost from 30 per cent to 50 per cent in Australian-made content for each train would benefit jobs.

About 67 firms in the region are capable of supplying the new trains, he said.

“There’s only a question mark as to the definition of the 50 per cent – we think it should be 50 per cent of manufacturing content not (including) maintenance and design.

“Manufacturing is still a staple part of the GDP of Victoria.

“We’ve got a growing population and we’ve got to work to increase the number of jobs - being stable is not good enough.”

Mr Boden praised the removal of level crossings including three traffic-clogging boom gates in Noble Park by 2018.

“It can’t happen soon enough. They’re a significant drag on the time and efficiency of moving goods around.”

“If the Coalition plan is so

flawed, why is Daniel Andrews spending $30 million of taxpayers’ money on buying the blueprint?”

Greens South East Metropolitan Region MP Nina Springle said the government’s commitment to fixing the “dangerously overcrowded” lines was welcome but she was disappointed by the lack of highspeed signalling.

“Modern digital train signals allow more trains to be run closer together, which is the only way to grow capacity,“ Ms Springle said.

Public Transport Users’ Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said the upgrades would provide “a lot more capacity – bigger trains and more of them.”

“We hope that the upgrades included in the Dandenong line will provide enough of a boost to capacity until high-capacity signalling can be rolled out.”

A DANDENONG North man could have the world’s largest collection of tiny shoes.

Wilson Fernandez started collecting the miniatures during a trip to India about 10 years ago.

He now has more than 960 and is in the running for a Limca Book of Records title.

“I wanted to buy shoes for myself and the family.

“While we were at this shop I came across small leather sandals in miniature sizes that replicated the big ones exactly,” he said.

“They were called Kolhapuri Chappal. I was so amazed to look at the details and the craftsmanship of these miniatures.”

Mr Fernandez bought the jar filled with 12 shoes but forgot about them upon his return home.

“It was a year later my wife found those Kolhapuri Chappals still lying in the holiday bag,” he said.

“She handed it to me with a look and reminded me of the day I was so carried away with those miniature shoes.

“Over the years, during my business and pleasure travels to new places, I started looking for shoes that represent the countries and places I visited.”

Leather boots from Vienna were the second addition to his collection, and Japanese geta, Korean hwahye, Turkish sabahs, Indian kolhapuri, Pakistani mojari, Dutch klomps, moccasins, sports shoes and

Materials include plastic, wood, straw, metal, clay, fabric and paper and the smallest pair is about three by five millimetres in size.

“I love these miniatures because of their magnificent details, craftsmanship, intricate designs... ” Mr Fernandez said.

He displays the shoes on his living room wall.

“The wall of great miniature shoes reminds me of the places visited, the best moments of those places, the culture, diversity, friendship and more,” he said.

A friend suggested Mr Fernandez contact the Limca Book of Records.

“I am sure if my collection stands out to be the highest, I may be the record holder for 2016,” he said.

“I have also contacted World Records Academy. Only time will tell me if I have the largest collection of miniature shoes in the world or not.

“Whatever may be the outcome of the records book I am truly excited about this unique hobby that keeps me happy and creative.”

The accused had told his lawyer: “There must be something wrong with me”.

Magistrate Barry Schultz said alcohol was a “recurring theme” in Bukin’s criminal history, including being drunk in a public place in 2010.

He said Bukin’s refusal to submit a breath test sample was the most serious of the charges.

“You’re showing some insight in saying normal people don’t do what you did.”

The brothel declined to seek court-ordered compensation of about $1000 from the accused.

Bukin was convicted, fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for four years.

Mob attacks bystanders A MOB of muggers has prompted a public warning from police, following two robberies at Hemmings Park in one day.

Greater Dandenong CIU Detective Senior Constable Tony Lavars feared a mob mentality drove the group of up to 10 men to corner and rob people at the Dandenong reserve.

“They approach easy victims in large numbers,” he said.

In the first incident, Sen Const Lavars said, an 18-yearold man and a 23-year-old woman from Dandenong were standing at their parked car on Princes Highway about 1am on 27 March.

appearance, aged 16 to 20, surrounded them.

One man removed the woman’s phone and car keys from the roof of her car and ran off into the park.

Sen Const Lavars said three men returned shortly after, used the keys to enter and start the car and started to reverse it.

The male victim leapt through the window and grabbed the keys.

The driver and passenger punched him to the face, causing minor injuries, before leaving the car and running into the park.

About 9.30pm the same day, five men of African appearance aged in their mid to late teens approached an 18-year-old

male walking through Hemmings Park.

Sen Const Lavars said they assaulted him and demanded his wallet before taking the wallet, his phone and shoes and fleeing.

The victim was treated for minor head injuries at Dandenong Hospital.

“You’ve got to be aware of your surroundings,” Sen Const Lavars said.

“If you see a large group approaching, get back in your car and go, or walk away. Don’t wait around to see what’s going to happen.”

A DRUNKEN driver with no explanation of why he repeatedly ploughed his car through a Dandenong South brothel’s front garden has been fined and disqualified from driving for four years.

The ‘gentlemen’s club’ Garden of Eden wouldn’t have looked much like paradise after Daniel Bukin, 35, drove over a lawn, through a hedge and damaged a steel irrigation pipe and giant pot plant over several incursions about 10.30pm on 29 March.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Liz Millear told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on Monday last week that Bukin

crashed into another car, drove out of the car park, and then sat in his car with music blaring at a “loud volume” until police arrived.

As he made partial admissions, the officers noticed a “strong smell of intoxicating liquor” and a half-empty bottle of whiskey in the vehicle.

Bukin repeatedly declined a blood-alcohol test, failed to give his name and address, refused to sign a bail undertaking to stay away from the brothel and gave no explanations for his behaviour, the court was told.

His lawyer told the court a “distressed and remorseful” Bukin couldn’t explain his behaviour nor recollect all of the

DRIVERS endured lengthy delays in Dandenong last Tuesday morning after a driver crashed his car into a power pole.

Police and United Energy blocked Stud Road from about 7.30am over fears that the concrete pole could topple and bring down powerlines.

The closure left shoppers departing from the busy Dandenong Market stuck in choked streets.

United Energy replaced the pole by mid-afternoon and told the Journal that only three homes were without power during the process.

Police described the crash as a “minor accident” and said the impact was at low speed.

“Where he hit the pole, he seemed to hit a bit of a sweet spot which caused all that damage,” the officer said.

The 20-year-old driver told the Journal a fogged windscreen may have obscured his vision as he drove to work along Stud Road, toward central Dandenong.

He said a car turning right into Stud Road from Herbert Street clipped the back of his sedan and he lost control, veering into oncoming traffic.

He swerved back into the left lane to avoid a collision, but instead hit the pole and forced it into a brick wall outside an apartment block.

His airbag deployed and surrounded him with dust and smoke, sending him hurrying from the car in fear of an explosion.

“When it hit I just saw

Sandeep Bhanot has lived across the street for six years and said he’d seen 10 or 11 car crashes on Stud Road between King and Herbert streets.

He said that three months ago a car careered through the wall in front of an apartment block just up the road, and that there was a serious collision at the King Street and Stud Road

intersection last year.

The City of Greater Dandenong has since banned right turns onto Stud Road out of King Street.

“They did the cheaper version,” Mr Bhanot said.

By CAM LUCADOU-WELLS A SPRINGVALE “serial pest” with 12 outstanding arrest warrants for failing to appear at court is set to face his “final day of reckoning”, according to a Dandenong magistrate.

After his failed bail application on Monday, Pheap Say screamed expletives as he was taken away to police cells.

He had been arrested earlier that day after being allegedly found by police slumped in his car with a bag of crystal methamphetamine.

Police informant Constable Eamon Williams told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that Say had failed to appear at court several times and on several matters.

They included allegedly stealing play equipment and copper parts of a hot-water service which caused flooding at a Noble Park property on 14 April last year.

He is also to face careless driving and other charges arising from fleeing a car accident in December 2013, as well as driving while suspended, speeding and possessing a dangerous article.

His defence lawyer Siva Kandasamy told the court that most of Say’s offences were summary traffic matters punishable by fines.

Say was prepared to plead guilty that day to be re-united with his family. He was their sole bread-winner, Mr Kandasamy said.

Magistrate Barry Schultz found that Say failed to show cause for his release on bail, noting the “litany” of failing to answer bail charges.

He said he might re-consider Say’s freedom if presented with evidence that the accused’s skin cancer required treatment.

“He has become something of a serial pest for failing to appear.

“What confidence can I have if I was to grant him bail?

What’s to say that the same pattern wouldn’t surface again?

“There has to be a final day of reckoning.”

Say was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 13 April.

ALMOST 800 Afghan men and women from Dandenong marched for justice in Melbourne last week.

Afghan Women’s Organisation Victoria organised a rally to demand justice and take a stand against violence after a group of men beat young woman Farkhunda to death in Kabul, Afghanistan, on 19 March.

The group’s president, Gula Bezhan, was thrilled with the large group that gathered outside Parliament House on Sunday 29 March.

“The number was very good.

I can’t believe it, I thought it would be maybe 300 or 400,” she said.

The Berwick woman, who works at Dandenong settlement service Catholic Care, said many Australians associated all Afghan people with ISIS. “We want to send a message to all of the community. We want justice. We want to show that we are against violence,” Ms Bezhan said.

“Afghan women want to tell the world that they are for Islam, peace, justice and human rights.”

Farkhunda had told a mullah selling charms to women at a shrine that he was not supposed to sell what was holy.

Men accused her of burning the Koran and hit her with pieces of timber, stomped on her, drove over her and dragged her body with a car before setting it on fire.

“The brutal murder of Farkhunda is proof how the fanatics misuse Islam to supress women,” Ms Bezhan said.

“What has happened is against Islam and humanity.”

It comes after the success of the 300 plus-lot community’s first stage, which is almost 90 per cent sold.

Launched in October last year, Cardinia Views is adjacent to Peet’s award-winning Cardinia Lakes community, boasts picturesque rural views and is within walking distance of the local shopping

centre including a Coles supermarket.

Cardinia Views offers family-sized blocks ranging from 497sqm to more than 600sqm and priced from $179,000.

Doctor’s in the house

By CASEY NEILL FORMER patients still stop Doctor Norval Yeaman in the street and beg him to return to work.

He’ll turn 90 this year and hung up his stethoscope more than 18 months ago due to failing eyesight.

It was his second attempt at retirement and he’s trying to make it stick.

Norval stepped away from a group practice on Robinson Street, Dandenong, in 1993 and took a trip around Australia with wife Alma, a nurse.

But they soon set up a makeshift clinic in their Narre Warren North home.

“People started turning up here wanting to see me so we ended up carrying on,” Dr Yeaman said.

Alma, who turns 87 this year, said many patients were sad to see them close their doors for good.

“People will stop me in the street and say ‘Is your husband going to go back practising?’ and I have to tell them ‘No, he’s not’,” she said.

Dr Yeaman was a doctor for 62 years after his principal at Shepparton High School nominated him and two other students to study medicine.

He spent his first year of general practice in Barhum on the Murray River near Kerang.

“You used to have to do everything yourself,” he said.

“If a patient needed blood, you had to look up the directory and find out who’s the right group.

“You had to call up, take the blood from them and then transfuse them.

“There were a lot more issues that you had to be very careful about because you were the beginning and the end.”

Dr Yeaman has seen great change in the medical profession.

The Yeamans married and moved to Dandenong in 1953 after meeting at work at the Royal Women’s Hospital.

man sometimes delivered four babies in a night, plus hospitals didn’t have casualty departments in those days.

Alma clocked up 20 years as a nurse at Doveton Technical School and received the 1999 City of Casey Citizen of the Year award.

“I was just floored, wasn’t I?” she said.

Alma regularly paid for underprivileged students to attend excursions.

“The principal used to say to me ‘I don’t know what you come to work for, you give all your salary away’,” she said.

“What I did was what anyone would have done.”

The Yeamans have also raised three children.

Daughter Judy runs the Andrews Centre in Endeavour Hills, a volunteer service for those less fortunate, and received an Order of Australia Medal for her efforts.

Son Leslie is a urologist in Canberra.

“I tried my best to talk Leslie out of doing medicine,” Alma said.

“I said to him ‘Haven’t you seen enough of your father?’.”

Daughter Sue from Harkaway is a midwife at Casey Hospital.

“I’m very pleased that they’ve grown up into very nice adult people,” Alma said.

“I think if you can achieve that as a mother you’ve done alright.”

The Yeamans have for many years been heavily involved with St James Anglican Church in Dandenong.

“St James would not be anything like as good at it is now without Norval,” Alma said.

He interjected: “I wouldn’t quote that, that’s quite inappropriate”.

But Alma insisted “That’s quite true!”.

“For 41 years he was vicar’s warden and in those years it was his job with the other wardens to make sure that the church was kept in good condition,” she said.

The Yeamans both shrug off praise, but conceded they had done a lot for the community over the years.

“We’ve tried to. I went into nursing to try and help people and Norval certainly gave his life to medicine and to his patients,” Alma said.

Students to stretch out their VCE study NOBLE Park North students are stretching out their VCE to expand their opportunities.

Carwatha College this year launched the V3 initiative, which will see all Year 10s complete their VCE or VCAL studies over three years rather than the usual two.

The school said the personalised approach to learning provided students with broader choices and opportunities.

Year 10 students can take up to four unit one and two studies as well as a special interest elective, with baking, book club, fitness and furniture making among this year’s choices.

Next year the students will undertake a mixture of unit one and two and unit three and four studies.

Year 10 students Amela Dug said she liked sharing classes with Year 11 students and forming new friendships that extended across traditional year levels.

Julie Hallett said V3 was encouraging her Year 10 son Jordan to work to his full potential. She said more choice had motivated him because he was doing subjects he enjoyed.

Getting up and going

By CASEY NEILL TO DESCRIBE Irene Difesa as determined would be an understatement.

The Dandenong 43-year-old has overcome life-threatening illness to be among about 15 Australians to compete in the World Transplant Games in Newcastle, England, from 30 July.

The kidney transplant recipient turned to the community she’s lived in for 34 years for help to get there.

“I’m overwhelmed by the support that I have received,” she said.

Her boss at Le Mans Go Karts in Dandenong South, Colin Lowe, completed 633 push-ups in two hours to raise $1013 for the trip.

Ms Difesa received cash from friends, her hairdresser at Men in Style and her financial advisor at Aston Ryan Malcolm.

Dandenong South Primary School - where she went to school and her son now attends - raised $500 through a free dress day.

Ms Difesa now has the $3000 she needs to compete and is determined to bring home a squash gold medal, matching the result from her first World Games in Sweden.

“That was a real eye-opener for me, to be surrounded by people who’d all been given a second chance at life,” she said.

She’s also been to four national games and this time will compete in squash, volleyball, track and field and table tennis.

“I compete because wherever we go we try to spread the word about organ donation, to thank the donors,” she said.

At age 19, Ms Difesa went to her GP with fluid retention in her legs and received medication.

“But it got to the point where I was struggling to breathe - fluid had got onto my lungs,” she said.

Ms Difesa endured three years of chemotherapy but it was too late to save her kidneys.

She needed a transplant and four hours of dialysis three times a week in the interim.

Her mum kept offering a kidney and Ms Difesa eventually agreed to testing for compatibility “in case I’m on my death bed”.

“Before I knew it we got the go-ahead.

The surgery was booked,” she said.

She received the organ on 17 January 1998.

“The average transplant lasts about 10

years - 17 years later I’m still here,” she said.

Doctors had warned Ms Difesa she might not be able to fall pregnant after the chemotherapy and were worried her body might reject the kidney if she did.

“Back then in 2000, I was told there were only about 300 women worldwide who’d had a transplant and gone on to have kids,” she said.

Jordan was born five weeks prematurely and is now in Year 9 at Dandenong High School.

Seven years later, Matthew was born four weeks prematurely.

Ms Difesa had applied for the police force before she fell ill and decided to

pursue her dream post-transplant, but the force repeatedly knocked her back.

During an interview in September 2009, an officer asked her for an example of her determination.

“I said to the copper ‘With all due respect, if you look at my file, 1992 I first applied then reapplied in 1998, and 2009 I’m still here,” she said.

They offered to take her on board but she said ‘no thanks’.

“The passion was gone. I don’t want to do a job that I’m not happy about,” she said.

She now works part time, looks after her two sons and volunteers with Kidney Health Australia and Donate Life.

Monash Health recently appointed the kidney transplant recipient a Bequest Ambassador and he is encouraging people to consider the service in their wills.

Kidney Care in Thomas Street, Dandenong, opened in April last year and is the largest Monash Health satellite dialysis centre.

“Kidney Care at Monash Health has cared for me and my transplanted kidney for over 43 years,” Mr Farrugia said.

“Prior to Kidney Care I was constantly sick, anaemic and unable to eat, with little energy to participate in daily family activities especially playing with my siblings.

“When people ask what does Kidney Care at Monash Health mean to me, the answer is simple life.

“The medical team not only keeps me alive but also gives me an excellent quality of life.”

Mr Farrugia has included a bequest for Kidney Care in his will.

“A few dollars, a few hundred or thousands - collectively it mounts up,” he said.

Son shines for dad

By CASEY NEILL JOHN Fabian watched his son Luke accept the trophy for best original EH Holden on his behalf at last year’s Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills All Holden Car Show.

The Blind Bight man suffered a fatal heart attack just one week later.

Luke, 12, will present the same award to this year’s winner on Sunday 12 April.

Berwick man Steve Marsden, who’ll be showing his FX Holden at the event, organised the tribute. “Luke’s rapt, he’s re-

ally looking forward to it,” he said. “It’ll mean the world to him.

“He’s had a hard year and a half. He lost his mum about a year beforehand. She passed away from breast cancer.

“We’ve tried to do what we can for him.”

Mr Marsden said John was very well-known in the car scene.

“He owned a big collection of EHs so he was in several different car clubs and went to a lot of shows,” he said.

Luke shares his dad’s passion. “I think he’s prob-

ably the smartest 11-yearold I’ve ever met,” Mr Marsden said.

“He’s taught me things about cars I’ve never known.

“He learned everything from his dad. He used to do all the polishing for his dad before all the car shows. He’d get all the cars cleaned and ready for him.

“I’m sure he can’t wait to work on the cars and drive them himself one day.

“I took him for a drive in the FX a few nights ago and he was so happy because he used to go out ev-

ery weekend with his dad.”

The Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills event raises funds for aid, including the club’s flagship project Disaster Aid Australia.

They create survival packs complete with a tent, blankets and other items needed by people after a major disaster.

IN BRIEF Patient GP bypass A HEALTH organisation head has called for a focus on chronic disease patients after national data suggested patients were attending emergency departments instead of their GPs. South Eastern Melbourne Medical Local chairman Nicholas Demediuk said there was a need for more co-ordinated care to save the health system budget and keep patients healthy and out of hospitals.

Dr Demediuk said there was a need to focus on management of chronic disease, persistent pain and mental health in Melbourne’s south-east.

According to a recent National Health Performance Authority report, the highest rate of GP visitors were in similar low-urban-density and lower socioeconomic status regions such as south-east Melbourne.

In Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia, about 21 per cent of people visited GPs more than 12 times a year.

“The report findings show that people who see GPs more frequently often have multiple long-term problems and need high quality, coordinated primary and hospital care,” Dr Demediuk said.

DEALING with a blown-away skylight and a fire hydrant flood was all in a week’s work for Greater Dandenong SES. Unit controller Paul Daniel said windy weather on Thursday 26 March tore a skylight from a single storey home on Princes Highway, Noble Park, about 7.45pm.

“There was no internal damage from rain or water,” he said.

“Our members put a tarp over the hole that had been created.”

The following afternoon, the unit attended a two-car collision at Ellen Street and Windsor Avenue, Springvale.

“One car collided with a water hydrant and caused a large spout of water,” Mr Daniel said. “The other car impacted with a wall at a property in Windsor Avenue.

“Water from the fire hydrant went onto the roof of that property and resulted in minor damage to the roof cavity.

“We helped to completely demolish the wall that the car had hit and we ensured that there was no major damage to the roof cavity.”

Running booze thief told to get his life in order AN ALCOHOLIC who stole from two bottle shops has been placed on a good-behaviour bond and told to turn his life around.

Jesse Van Eijk, 21, had a simple modus operandi for his shop-stealing – appearing to want to pay for an item, distracting an attendant and then making an ultimately failed run for it.

A court was told on Monday last week that Van Eijk had pretended that he wanted to pay for a slab of beer and then asked for two bottles of spirits at a Hampton East bottle shop in December.

After the staff member placed the two bottles on the counter, Van Eijk grabbed them and walked out of the store without paying.

Police found him at a nearby railway station, with a $300 mountain bike stolen from the station earlier that day.

Last Sunday week about 4pm he stole a slab of beer and a spirit bottle and glasses gift set while an attendant was getting a pack of cigarettes for him at a Dandenong liquor outlet.

He spent that night remanded in custody.

The next day, a defence lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates’ Court that Van Eijk had been “out of control” drinking every day and living with another friend.

“He has a problem with alcohol – that is what it comes down to.”

He was engaging on at least a weekly basis with youth substance-abuse workers at YSAS where he was taking a leadership role at its day program.

His first night in custody was a “massive eye opener” for him, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Barry Schultz said the accused had to turn his own life around rather than being placed on a community-based order.

Van Eijk was convicted and placed on a 12-month good-behaviour bond to “hang over his head” – on condition he continued to attend YSAS. He was fined $150 for stealing the bicycle and failing to appear in court.

Green is go for leaders

By CASEY NEILL GREEN thinkers in Greater Dandenong have received applause and prizes.

The council presented its first Sustainability Awards at the Greater Dandenong Sustainability Festival on 22 March.

Up to 5000 people packed Dandenong Market for the second annual event, up from about 2000 last year, to enjoy entertainers, make pedal-powered smoothies, watch cooking demonstrations and hear from gardening experts.

The day celebrated innovative ideas and offered practical, environmentallyfriendly solutions to being greener in the home, backyard and office.

Mayor Sean O’Reilly said the Sustainability Awards recognised and rewarded community members who had embraced, promoted and contributed to environmental sustainability in the municipality.

There were three award categories – schools, home and garden, and students – and information boards explained the efforts of the finalists and winners.

Springvale’s Athol Road Primary School won the Sustainable Schools award and a $700 Bunnings voucher for enhancing the environmental sustainability of its school grounds and surrounds.

It used recycled and donated materials to set up a natural wetland in a disused space and uses the area for environmental education lessons and programs.

Category finalists could choose between a voucher or facilitated activity valued at $350.

Keysborough Community Children’s Centre was recognised for engaging children at an early age through environment-themed activities and programs.

Silverton Primary School has been equipping students with knowledge and skills to help ensure the planet’s sustainability and Harrisfield Primary School has reduced energy, water and waste consumption.

Dandenong High School has established the Dandenong High Environment Response Team, enabling students to understand environmental issues and drive outcomes that benefit the school community.

Andrea Iuga and Manisha Shanmugan shared the Sustainable Students award and each took home a $100 myki card and $150 Dandenong Plaza voucher.

Trade visit builds bridge to China

By CASEY NEILL GREATER Dandenong business opportunities in China have received another boost.

City of Greater Dandenong business group manager Paul Kearsley received an invitation to attend the Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement (VJBP) Program in May. Its aim is to foster alliances with business, government and academic leaders in Jiangsu, Victoria’s sister state.

Mr Kearsley and representatives from Victorian businesses, associations and organisations will meet their Jiangsu counterparts.

VECCI and the Jiangsu Federation of Industry and Commerce (JFIC) will present the event, with support from the Victorian Government and City of Melbourne.

Greater Dandenong has fostered a sister city relationship with Xuzhou, in Jiangsu, since 1996.

Mr Kearsley went to the Xuzhou Investment Fair in September 2013 and attended again in October last year.

He and a business delegation also visited Shanghai and Nanjing, where they connected with trade associations including the JFIC. Committee for Dandenong chairman Gary Castricum and SEMMA’s executive officer Adrian Boden, vice-president Greg Northrop and president Simon Whiteley were alongside Mr Kearsley.

“I wanted them to understand the relationship the council has with China,” he said. “They’d done business on their own.

I wanted to show what council can do for them.”

Greater Dandenong mayor to participate in the Xuzhou Investment Fair.

He met with up to 12 businesses over two and a half days, including tooling and sheet metal companies, and a company that made scooters.

Mr Kearsley said the government and businesses were now more open to trading overseas following a dip in the Chinese economy.

“I can see the difference even in 18 months. There’s not many councils with the 20-year relationship.”

Mr Kearsley will recommend that the council continue to send trade delegations to China at least every year.

“The main role of the council is to maintain its relationship, and expose businesses to the relationship and its benefits.”

“The council has a good understanding of where opportunity lies but at the end of

the day the opportunity is in the hands of our businesses.”

Mr Castricum found the October trip “very interesting and insightful”.

“We were particularly looking at an export perspective – not China exporting to Australia but Australia exporting to China.”

“There are a lot of opportunities.”

Mr Castricum said the Committee for Dandenong and SEMMA were keen to encourage companies to exploit that.

“SEMMA’s now working to get a pilot group to go along,” he said.

“There’s a good leg-up and there is a real opportunity for even small-scale specialised manufacturers, component makers and even some of the service providers, to really leverage an entry into businesses in China that actually are looking not only for suppliers, but partners of all types. It’s quite an open exchange.”

Grant means it’s not a waste to e-recycle

The Dandenong South business was among five to receive City of Greater Dandenong Business Grants Program support on 25 March.

Each business will be reimbursed for up to $8000 it spends and receive about $2000 in advice from the Small Business Mentoring Service.

Isaacs MP Mark Dreyfus and Greater Dandenong Mayor Sean O’Reilly visited the Rhur Street factory on Monday 30 March.

Husband and wife Lokesh Baskaran and Shobana Radhakrishnan own the business.

“Shobana’s dad back home is one of the leading recyclers in India,” Mr Baskaran said.

“They were going to do the project in India but there’s heavy competition back there. We wanted to try it here in Australia.

Not many people are doing it.”

Mr Baskaran graduated from Swinburne with a master’s degree in microeconomics.

He couldn’t find a job and

managed a Kennards Hire store in Moorabbin for the past seven years.

He’s now focused on growing Quantum.

“The next step is to get another warehouse. The future’s going to be electronics and someone’s got to do something about it to recycle it.”

Few products are recycled, he said, so valuable materials were lost in landfill and poisonous substances could leach into the environment.

Quantum’s mission is to dispose of e-waste using environmentally friendly technology and keep it out of landfill, including computers, printers, televisions, DVD players, gaming devices and cameras.

Mr Baskaran has overcome several setbacks to reach this point. He ordered machines priced in US dollars to set up the business.

“I had a big financial crisis because the Aussie dollar went down. I lost about $25,000 there.”

Survey to get firms out of a jam TRAFFIC woes in Dandenong South are in the spotlight and businesses can have their say.

The City of Greater Dandenong has commissioned a study to identify key issues and traffic choke points in the area.

It comes in response to increased business concerns about congestion and the negative impacts on their operations and profits.

The council, South East Business Networks (SEBN) and others will use findings from the SGS Economics and Planning study to lobby governments to alleviate the traffic issues.

In an email to businesses, SEBN said it was keen to understand the adequacy of road infrastructure that businesses relied on for efficient transport and worker movement.

“It is critical that we have solid evidence to support our submissions to government for funding to address traffic congestion issues and to lobby for the prioritisation of projects such as the Abbotts Road/Remington Drive road-rail grade separation,” the email said.

It invited businesses to complete an online survey with targeted questions, which should take no more than 15 minutes to complete.

The survey needs to be completed by Friday 10 April.

Roller derby team puts out call for grinder fresh meat SKATERS, officials and fans will dress in their acid-washed, neon and grunge finest for the next South Sea Roller Derby (SSRD) bout.

Home teams the Blackheart Breakers and the Dolly Rodgers will do battle in the ’90s-themed skate off Pump Up the Jams on Saturday 18 April.

Breakers captain Harmin’ Miranda said the side only lost one game last year - to the Dollys.

“So we very much want to make up for that slight slip-up,” she said.

The Breakers are undefeated for the year after beating Ballarat Rat Pack in Daylesford in the first round of Battle for the Bay and fellow SSRD home team Cutthroat Charmers.

The Dollys lost their first game for the year against Geelong’s Psychotics.

The bout will be held at Springers Stadium, 400 Cheltenham Road, Keysborough. Doors open at 6pm for skates down at 7pm. There’ll be market stalls on site and a bar for over 18s.

Units selling fast KARIDIS Retirement Villages have been providing residents with convenient and friendly community living for six years, and new dwellings are selling fast at Saffron Grove in Hallam.

The only problem so far for Sandown has been its struggles to get clearances from Chelsea Heights as Daniel Gerandt, Richard Gow and Luke Williams have all been knocked back at the final moments before the first bounce. These ins were going to form the basis of the side, especially with a number of top calibre players like Daniel Macklin and Jason Toan leaving. Sandown will also get a onegame forward boost from Carlton/Brisbane AFL player Brendan Fevola. Sandown will travel to face Endeavour Hills.

A CLEAN slate in 2015 is just what Noble Park needed ahead of a highly anticipated Eastern Football League campaign.

The Bulls have put to bed an aberrant year in 2014 – after finishing with an eight-win season to miss the finals and finish eighth.

With coach Jon Knight and the club deciding to part ways with two rounds remaining last year, stability was needed for the new season and it came in the form of returning premiership coach Mick Fogarty.

Fogarty will have arsenal aplenty as his Bulls’ line-up has pushed towards VFL standard.

The biggest additions to Noble Park’s roster are former AFL midfielder Kyle Martin, two-time VFL Liston Medal winner Shane Valenti and the return of two powerful VFL players – Ziggy Alwan and Jackson Sketcher.

Everything is fresh for the 2015 season down at the Bullring as Noble Park sizes up for a tilt at EFL premiership number five.

Noble Park will host South Croydon on Saturday from 2.10pm.

WITH a WNBL championship and two years of Townsville sunshine under her belt, Steph Cumming, 24, originally from Endeavour Hills, is set to don the green-and-gold once again as she returns to Dandenong.

With her long-time SEABL coach Larissa Anderson at the helm of the Rangers in her inaugural coaching stint, once Cumming announced she had left the Fire it was just a matter of time until she signed the dotted line back at Dandenong Basketball Stadium.

The livewire guard was a crucial part of the Townsville’s championship success as she rattled off 11.4 points, two assists and 2.8 rebounds a game.

SOUTHERN football is set to return on Saturday with teams from around Greater Dandenong and Casey.
