THE Warwick Show held more spectacle than ever last weekend, with organisers well pleased with the crowds and the mix of events. Thousands flocked in over the three days of the annual fun-fest.

Among the action, Ben from the Lumberjack Show set the dust flying, chips spinning and hearts racing with his passionate display of chainsaw power. They said that never before had the centre “been as important as it is now, and would be in the future, as the Tenterfield Bypass will encourage would-be visitors to keep on driving.”

The councillors also said ratepayers had a right to know about the demise of the centre.

“The community of the Tenterfield Shire are the true owners of the centre and are, therefore, entitled to have their say,” they wrote.

“It defies logic that six votes were able to decide the future of the

centre, a community asset with a long and proud history.”

“We, the undersigned councillors, would like to thank the committee and volunteers of the centre and wish them well in the future, as in the last 12 months they have worked diligently for our community, under extreme conditions, while awaiting the axe to fall, eradicating the goodwill that has been built up over many years.”

THREE Tenterfield councillors have slammed a controversial council decision to stop funding a local visitor centre.

Councillors voted six to four to stop funding the Tenterfield Visitor Information Centre, which was founded by the community, managed by a committee and supported by volunteers.

Councillors Don Forbes, Michael Petrie and Brian Murray voted to continue funding and wrote an email to the Southern Free Times expressing their disappointment.

THIRTEEN businesses were subject to graffiti damage in the early hours Sunday morning.

Using CCTV, police observed one offence being committed in the Piazza and immediately proceeded to that location, detaining an 18-year-old male tourist.

Investigations carried out resulted in one male being charged with six graffiti offences and possessing a graffiti instrument.

A second offender, also an 18-year-old tourist was located and charged with two counts of graffiti, disobeying a police move-on direction and urinating in a public place.

Police are still waiting for a number of offences to be reported by the victims to investigate and charge the offenders.

“It has been a huge exercise but we have done it because we want to have an efficient use of council resources into the long term. We don’t need to be mowing and maintaining large tracts of land that are no longer used or of value to the community.

“We will be taking a long-term approach to the rationalisation process, so we can make considered decisions, taking into account feedback from our community.

“It should be emphasised that rationalisation can mean a number of different options for our open space, including reducing services, changing services, exploring leasing opportunities, subdividing land, handing back services to other owners, retaining or selling," he said.

At the March General Council Meeting, councillors agreed to place six parks onto a land register to be considered in the 2016 budget.

Strong steps in right direction SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council has taken up the 10,000 Steps program and staff members have been so enthusiastic with their walking that their combined steps would take them to Western Australia and back seven times.

Council’s Human Resources manager Brook March said over 150 employees registered to be part of the 10,000 Steps challenge.

“This QLD Health program aims to increase the day-to-day activity of people by encouraging them to use a step-counting pedometer to accumulate “incidental“ physical activity as part of their everyday living,” Brook said.

“Council has a huge diversity of employees - some would mainly be seated at a desk, some working in parks and gardens and some out in the field however all benefit from having regular exercise each day.

“We have found the program to be very motivating with staff members trying to increase their steps and taking other opportunities to improve their health.

“A healthy and active workforce is a productive one, and we’re pleased to see such good results.

“Our program runs for six weeks, but we believe the benefits will last much longer than this,” she said.

Council’s senior Information Technology officer Steve Brown said the 10,000 Steps challenge was a great motivational tool for incorporating more exercise into everyday life.

“Because you are measuring your steps, it gives you an awareness about your general activity. I will definitely continue after the challenge is over as the program showed you don’t have to make a huge lifestyle adjustment to make a difference to your general health.

“Another advantage is the team structure - we can encourage each other, support each other and also challenge each other,” he said.

THE number of parks in the Southern Downs area could be reduced under a new plan currently being rolled out by the Southern Downs Regional Council.

The council will use a variety of methods to gain public input into its Parks Rationalisation Program, rolling out over the next two years.

Parks Rationalisation Committee chair Cr Vic Pennisi said councillors and staff had worked intensively on the program to ensure there was a balance between keeping the region’s well-utilised parks at the highest standards of maintenance and investigating other options for pieces of land that weren't put to best use.

“There are over 160 parks in our region and our committee has studied each one and toured the region to look at the size, boundaries, geography and other issues of most of these.

“John McDonald greeted us at Cabanda and assisted us to board Red Fred - RM55 which was built by QR in 1930.

“It is built on a truck body and powered by a 50hp Gardner four cylinder diesel motor. He was driver on the short trip to Kunkala for a brief visit.

“Red Fred reversed to Cabanda where we rejoined our coach.”

Finally, they visited St Brigid’s Roman Catholic Church in Rosewood.

This is the largest wooden church in the southern hemisphere and is lovingly maintained by the local congregation.

They are faced with a massive restoration project and the need to raise large sums of money to preserve this beautiful building.

Three volunteers guided the group around the building and explained the church history, and the issues involved in restoration.

THE Stanthorpe Scout Group invites everyone to bring a blanket and a bean bag for a fun family night at the drive-in.

The family drive-in movie night will be held on Saturday 18 April with two movies on offer.

The night kicks off with a cartoon classic and finishes with the one and only Man from Snowy River.

You can either stay in your car and tune in through your car radio or bring a bean bag or blanket and radio.

The Wild will be shown at 6.30pm and The Man from Snowy River will start at 8.30pm at the Stanthorpe Scout Den. The event will cost $10 per person including a drink and popcorn, five years and under are free. Hot dogs will be available at intermission and gates will swing open at 5.30pm.

WARWICK Combined Probus Club has been on their annual magical mystery tour this time following the old Cobb and Co route from Toowoomba to Rosewood.

Tour co-ordinator Arthur Maynard said once again it was a total mystery to the participants but still a lot of fun.

“Members were not led up the garden path, but there was much guessing at possible destinations and activities as the day unfolded,” he said.

“First stop on the Cobb and Co route was Spring Bluff railway station, where I had arranged a demonstration of the passing of an empty coal train and a loaded train before we could cross to the station and surrounds for a brief inspection of the gardens.

“We were soon back on board the coach for a drive through Murphy’s Creek and Postman’s Ridge and past the Helidon Spa before arriving at Helidon for morning tea in a beautiful park with lots of sculptures and information for our entertainment.

“The next stop was the Transport museum at Gatton for a guided tour before we drove past the Light on the Hill memorial and on through the old shopping precinct.

“Contrary to some guesses, we continued along the Cobb and Co route passing through Forest Hill where we failed to identify the crop of okra.

“After a lap of the Laidley shopping centre, we arrived at the QN hotel for an excellent lunch before we explored Das Neumann Haus.

“Here we discovered that Ken Wells went to school with a grandson of Hermann Neumann who had built the house and conducted a furniture making business.

“A Stradivarius-like violin and a zither handcrafted by Hermann were features of the display in this museum.

Gardening guru shows the way ABC Gardening Australia TV presenter Jerry Coleby-Williams brought the message of sustainable living to town recently.

Mr Coleby-Williams took part in two sustainable living workshops discussing innovative house and gardening ideas.

Southern Downs Community Services manager Sheila Stebbings said council was keen to support environmentally sustainable practices, lifelong learning and a healthy active Southern Downs.

“We will hold two events – Integration of House and Garden for Sustainable Living Workshops, one at Warwick Town Hall and then another workshop at Stanthorpe Civic Centre,” Ms Stebbings said.

“Jerry Coleby-Williams, who many will know and watch regularly on the ABC’s Gardening Australia, will discuss a number of topics including the

21st century cottage garden and creating and maintaining a sustainable house and garden.

“Jerry’s expertise and enthusiasm for these topics is infectious and we hope many people were inspired by his innovative strategies,” she said.

Mr Coleby-Williams said there were many local people already creating sustainable homes and gardens.

“I’m hoping my visit can build on what people are already doing and also get people to share ideas and thoughts,” he said.

With cottage gardens these days, we find people have more of an emphasis on integrating biodiversity management, pest and disease control and horticulture.

Too close to call TENTERFIELD voters may have their third MP in two years after what looked like an upset for the local electorate in Saturday’s NSW poll.

On Saturday night, while the Baird Liberal/ Nationals Government was returned with a slight swing against, in the northern seat of Lismore the formerly safe Nationals seat was well and truly up for grabs.

Lismore MP Thomas George (Nationals) looked to be in the fight of his political life when a high Greens vote in early counting – and likely ALP preferences – had tipsters looking at a spill.

Later counting on Tuesday and Wednesday had the Nationals edging closer, but with the very real prospect the Greens could take the seat.

The coal seam gas issue in northern NSW is thought to have contributed to the electoral reversal.

In a statement on Monday, Mr George acknowledged the turnaround in his vote.

“It’s clear the result of this election in Lismore is incredibly close,“ Mr George said.

“It is important that as the NSW Electoral Commission takes the time to ensure all ballots are properly counted and recounted over the next few days, we all respect the job they are doing.

“In all likelihood, we may not have a declaration until after the Easter long weekend.

“Whatever the outcome, I will accept the decision of the people of the Lismore electorate.”

Stanthorpe Police report POLICE were kept busy over the weekend with a number of offences and drunken disturbances taking place at various locations.

A vehicle parked at an address in High Street had a window smashed on Friday night and items removed from the glovebox.

A disturbance at the Central Hotel led to the arrest of a 24-year-old male for disorderly conduct on licensed premises.

Police endeavoured to arrest the second offender who left the scene and could not be located.

The second offender is known to police and is expected to be charged later this week.

Drug arrests SEVERAL drug offenders have been located and charged in the Stanthorpe area over the past week.

A 33-year-old man received drug diversion after he was located driving a vehicle at Thulimbah

on Thursday afternoon.

A small quantity of cannabis and a smoking implement were seized.

A 30-year-old man will face court after being intercepted driving a vehicle at Severnlea on Friday night.

Police located a quantity of powder which was believed to be heroin as well as a used syringe containing liquid.

Springborg steals Show THE Warwick Show bowled everyone over this year with a stunning turn out, a sheep shearing special from Lawrence Springborg and a Saturday night program set to beef up in 2016. The show was opened by Brisbane Heat fast bowler Mark Steketee, a born and bred local.

The rising star and guest of honour is a great role model for everyone, Show chairman John Wilson said. “He shows all of us that you can achieve and do whatever you want to do, it doesn’t matter where you are or where you start, I thought it was pretty special having him there for the opening,� Mr Wilson said.

In its 148th year, the Warwick Show attracted more than

3000 people over the three days. “Every year it keeps getting bigger, seasons come and go and we are always supported very strongly, the volunteers do it every year and tweak things each year, and we are always looking to improve where we can,� Mr Wilson said. “This year was one of the best we’ve seen.�

With an increase in competitors across the board, the horse jumping had record numbers.

The art show was moved into its own building this year and with everything growing, Mr Wilson said the “biggest problem is we need more places, more room to put everyone and their exhibits.�

The shearing competition got everyone talking when Liberal Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg got up and got to work. “We watched him shear a sheep right through, and there would be very few politicians who could actually shear a sheep completely, he knew what he was doing,� he said.

Show chairman John Wilson has been in and out of the job for 14 years, and said he’ll be back for another year, “if they have me back, I’ll be there.� “The beautiful thing about the show is everyone has an interest, and at our show whatever their interest is they can find it,� he said.

WE SHOULD spend Earth Hour giving thanks for warmth.

Just 13,000 years ago, Earth was in the grip of a deadly ice age. Sea levels were indeed much lower but much of the land surface was covered by thick sheets of ice. Life struggled to survive and many species were extinguished by the sterile, suffocating ice.

Without any help from humans, Earth escaped from the ice. And as the oceans warmed they expelled part of their dissolved carbon dioxide which nurtured an enormous increase in plant and animal life.

Sign of the good AS WORLD-WEARY ancients such as this writer, searches for a sign that something good is surely to be located amidst the dreadful calamities of everyday events, the World Cup of Cricket has pushed to the front. Whether or not Australia wins or New Zealand pips us at the post, the Anzac Story will live on. The cricket series has been a wonderful escape from the daily horrors of conflict all over the world. News cycles of unspeakable events such as the latest air disaster, are seen against a backdrop of unbelievable behaviour by millions at war with the world. Standing out against evil were a team of Australian Cricketers, dressed in green and gold, proud and willing to show a love of country against the rest of the world! Win or lose these young men are already champions, who have given some relief from what one would see upon news bulletins.

Regime on the rocks ANNASTACIA’s regime is facing a serious crisis with the revelations surrounding Billy Gordon.

The first question is: “Did she or didn’t she know the past indiscretions of Bill?” But does it really matter? Sure, Billy did some activities in the past for which he paid the penalty, but shouldn’t he be given the benefit of the doubt? When someone commits an offence, and pays the penalty for it, shouldn’t the slate be wiped clean and they be able to move on with their life?

As for the DVO put on Billy by his mum; well, anyone can raise a DVO and say anything they want. There are those who raise malicious and vexatious DVOs as no witnesses are required for a DVO. Many in the Cook electorate would have known the history of Billy and they voted for him regardless. I think Billy should be left to take his seat in parliament. There are many who have done worse things but they haven’t been caught. Why pick on Billy because of these latest revelations?

RE: THE Demise of Tenterfield Information Centre 2015.

After careful consideration we, councillors Don Forbes, Brian Murray, and Michael Petrie have decided that the ratepayers of the Tenterfield Shire should be made aware of the demise of the Tenterfield Visitors Centre.

This centre, from its very inception, was founded by the community and has been successfully managed by a competent committee supported by many loyal volunteers over many years. The community of Tenterfield are the true owners of the TVA and are, therefore, entitled to have their say.

Council’s decision to completely cut the funding to the Visitors’ Information Centre was brought about by councillors’ vote, six votes against funding the Visitors’ Information Centre to four votes in favour of granting funding. Councillors Hull, Schiffmann, Verri, Maxwell and Leahy voted that no further funding be given while Councillors Forbes, Petrie and Murray voted in favour of funding the centre.

It defies logic that six votes were able to decide the future of the centre, with its long and proud history.

Last year a similar situation took place. A petition containing 400 signatures forwarded from ratepayers across the shire protested against council’s decision, saying loud and clear that “this is not what we want.” The public voice was totally rejected, ignored and even slighted, as being of little importance.

We, the undersigned councillors, would like to thank the volunteers and committee of the centre and wish them well in the future, as in the last 12 months they have worked diligently for our community, under extreme conditions, while awaiting the axe to fall, eradicating the goodwill that has been built up over many years.

In conclusion, never before has the Visitors’ Information Centre been as important as it is now, and will be in the future, as the Tenterfield bypass will encourage would-be visitors to keep on driving.

When council takes control, costs will increase significantly and will be borne by the ratepayers as happens in Stanthorpe (approximately $750,000) and Glenn Innes (approximately $1 million).

... IS THE answer given by many novice potters when asked what they’d most like to make. For experienced potters too the teapot remains a challenge, even a pinnacle of achievement, with its many components and potential pitfalls (drippy spouts and illfitting lids come to mind).

For 11 Granite Belt potters, including beginner and more experienced students, this wish was fulfilled at a recent workshop. A grant from the Regional Arts Development Fund enabled the Stanthorpe Pottery Club to engage Claire Locker-Potter, the 2013 winner of the Sydney Teapot Show, to teach them her intriguing methods to make colourful and quirky teapots.

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a Queensland Government and Southern Downs Regional Council partnership to support local arts and culture.

At the end of the weekend workshop participants had each made a teapot, a set of cups and a group of bowls. Not bad for two days!

and Newcastle and undertaking post-graduate studies in Jaipur, India. Having perfected her craft she is generous in revealing all the methods, tips and tricks learned over many years and thinks it important that this wealth of information is shared.

School holiday activities

Smooth road for the kids TRAVELLING these school holidays? Not everyone’s vehicle is equipped with the latest in-car entertainment to keep the kids occupied on long trips.

That’s why it’s important to have some games in mind that don’t require any tools, paper or accessories beyond the open road.

Try the following:

1. I Spy PROBABLY the classic make-time-go-by game of all time. One person looks around and chooses an object that the others have to guess, with their only clue being these words: “I spy with my little eye something that begins with (insert the first letter of the object’s name).” Or the clue can be the object’s colour. The player who guesses the

object gets to go next. The tricky part? It’s not fair to “spy” something that’s whizzing by the car at highway speeds. A landmark (mountain range, forest) that will be in the players’ view for a few minutes is best.

2. 20 Questions “ARE we there yet? Are we there yet?” Only 18 more times to go! In 20 Questions, whoever goes first thinks of, well, anything. The first question is always, “Animal, vegetable or mineral?“ After that, the players can ask pointed questions to try and guess - go around the car in a circle asking for clues such as, “Does it bark?“ or “Can you peel it?“ for example, although the answer to those questions can only be “yes“ or “no.“ If you reach the 20th question without a winner, everyone has one last chance to figure it out before the “thing“ is revealed and another person starts a fresh round.

3. Licence Plates THERE are many ways to play with licence plates, depending on the age of your kids. Young participants can call out letters in alphabetical order; the first one to Z wins. Next, have them look for doubles - or better yet, triples! - of letters and/ or numbers in the plates. The one who has the most at the end of the day/trip wins. Older kids can “collect“ out-of-state plates they see. (Make it tougher by going in alphabetical order.) Or they can try to build words or phrases using the letter sequence in the plates. A plate with the letters E, F and T, for example, might become the word “effort“ (using those letters to start the word, in the middle and at the end). Those could make “Ed’s Favorite Tacos“ if you’re running with phrases.

4. Slug-a-Bug THE concept is that players keep track of how many Volkswagen Beetles they spot on the road.

We’ve heard of variations in which the game is limited to new or vintage Beetles, or versions where the older Bugs are worth more. In the game’s original version you were supposed to punch your seatmate when you spotted a Bug, but most parents find that any game that involves hitting can get out of hand pretty quickly. So keep score some other way - tapping your seat mate, counting on your fingers (first to 10 wins) or something more in keeping with the Bug’s peaceful hippie history.

5. Where’s the Alphabet?

PERFORM this as teams or solo players. You’ll want to utilise road signs, billboards, shop names - any reading material outside the window qualifies as long as it’s spotted on your side of the car.

(If you’re the front-seat passenger, focus on the right). You’ll be looking for every letter of the alphabet, in alphabetical order, although the letter can be located anywhere in the word. Say there is a fruit stand with a sign for Granny Smith apples - there’s your A. The exit for the Brooklyn

Bridge would cover B, Road Closed is C and so on. First one to the letter Z wins. If you see “Road Closed,“ however, you’ll probably be happy to have the nine other games listed here.

6. Name That Tune AS with the classic TV game show, the winner here is the one who figures out the name of the “mystery song“ first. For those with singing/ whistling/humming talent, this can be as much karaoke as a guessing game. Choose a theme for the game, such as show tunes, movie or TV themes, or Justin Timberlake. (Good luck, adults.) The winner gets to be the singer for the next round. If no-one can carry a tune in a bucket, then try guessing the songs on the radio. Really want to mix it up? Hit the “seek“ button so noone gets an unfair advantage from sticking to one particular station’s format.

7. The Picnic Game A MEMORY builder for all ages. One player says, “I went to a picnic Saturday and I brought ...” then says a picnic favorite that begins with the letter A, like apples. The next player repeats the opening phrase, and after “... I brought” they repeat the A item then add one that begins with B: “I brought an apple and some bananas.” The third player repeats the opener, the A and the B portions, and then adds something that begins with C. Get it? Can your travellers get through the alphabet, remembering all the items everyone contributed? Try keeping track of 23 items plus figuring out what you can take to a picnic that starts with X! 8. Count the...

PROBABLY even the most enthusiastic young ’uns will catch on to this being busywork, but for a while it’ll be all they’ll think about! And there is a bonus: interest is likely to reignite on its own shortly after it stalls. Count the ... can be anything: cows, telephone poles, headlights, train cars, blue pick-up trucks - you name it. Shouting out the thing to keep track of is all that is required.

9. Tunnels THIS one is simple: When you come to a tunnel, see who can hold their breath the longest. True, it may not be one best played by the driver (lightheadedness, anyone?), but everyone else can give it a go. We used to be amazed at our own skill at this as kids.

10. Geography Lesson GEOGRAPHY is much more fun outside the classroom, isn’t it? For this game, choose countries, cities or states (or go nuts and try rivers and lakes or capitals). Let’s say your theme is states.

The first player names a location, and the next player has to rattle off another state that starts with the last letter of the previous player’s state. Therefore, if it were New South Wales, the next state would have to start with S, like South Australia, and so on. Note: This one makes our brain hurt.

Today sees the convention taking place at Slade Campus of the “Warwick Christian College”. This was the former Anglican boarding school on Horsman Road Warwick.

THE Darling Downs Easter Convention began its life in the early 1950s at Kingswood Campsite at Canningvale Road, Warwick.

It was under the leadership of Colin and Betty Denner, under the banner of The Gospel Service Mission whose headquarters were at Tahlee Bible College in Port Stephens in NSW. For many years the convention was held on the site, buildings were erected and the whole homestead renewed and redecorated over these years.

In the late 1990s the site was sold to a couple who had spent many years at Tahlee and they took on the ownership of ‘Kingswood’ as Tahlee Bible College could no longer fund the

Killarney ground pukkas up IN an unusual move, Killarney will this weekend host the Gold Coast Polocrosse club’s Easter carnival, the first event of the season.

The Gold Coast club has lost it’s home venue due to preparations for the Commonwealth Games.

But the Gold Coast’s loss is a gain for the Darling Downs with Killarney Polocrosse Club allowing the homeless club to hire their venue. Gold Coast Polocrosse Club will host their annual carnival at Killarney on 4 and 5 April, bringing with it economic benefits to the country town.

Club president Mac McDiarmid said: “The decision was made primarily to give our club members, their horses and other South East Queensland based clubs some match fitness before Warwick’s Barastoc Interstate Series and Shell Cup Carnival in April.”

“All clubs sending teams to Barastoc will benefit from this early carnival, especially those playing against teams from other states who start their playing season earlier. Early indications so far suggest that the new season opening carnival will be well attended,” Mr McDiarmid said

More than 30 teams of six players and their horses are expected to take to the field at the Gold Coast Polocrosse Carnival.

Polocrosse is an exciting spectator sport. It presents an incomparable athletic challenge involving speed and stamina, and also demands lightning quick reflexes in both horse and rider. Being a sport the whole family can play, polocrosse caters for everyone from the expert ‘A Grade’ and elite player to the once a year ‘casual’ player. Polocrosse is one of the few sports where male and female players can compete equally in the same team.

By CASEY O’CONNOR AS Round four unfolded, it became obvious it was going to be a round of upsets. The Eels set the pace on Friday night when they burst the Bunnies bubble. The carnage continued throughout the round. The Cowboys capped off the weekend of upsets on Monday night. They crawled off the canvas to get their season up and running with a nail- biting golden point win over Melbourne.

Their best season start in 15 years has Newcastle top the table at the end of round four.

The Bulldogs and Bunnies get the Easter parade underway on Good Friday in a re-match of the grand final. The Doggies hung on grimly for a win in golden point extra time against the Tigers but not before they squandered an 18-point lead. The Bunnies will be smarting after their first loss since round 26 last season. The Bunnies, wounded after last weekend’s loss will be in the hunt for the chocolates here.

The Titans were another team to open their winning account in round four with a narrow win over the Sharks.

The Titans never gave up believing they could win this game. An intercept try broke an 18-all deadlock late in the game to give the Titans

win number one.

The Broncos handed the Kiwis their first loss of the day on Sunday, fighting off a spirited Warriors second half comeback. Brisbane should be too strong for the Titans but will be without Hodges.

The Sea Eagles host the Raiders at Brookvale on Saturday night.

Manly are battling a mounting injury toll and may recall Dave (Wolfman) Williams for this clash.

The Raiders were outclassed by the Roosters in round four. Canberra is yet to win a game and despite Manly’s injury woes, it is hard to see a change in that trend this weekend.

Newcastle and St George clash at Hunter Stadium in the inaugural Alex McKinnon Cup. McKinnon played with great success for both sides and his journey is sure to provide inspiration for both teams.

The Knights are off to a flying start this season and are not done with yet. A three-try blitz early in their game against Penrith set up their 26-14 win.

St George is coming off a comprehensive win over Manly. This will be a tough game. If the Knight can keep the emotion under wraps they can keep their unblemished record in tact.

The Rooster and Cronulla go

head to head at Allianz on Sunday afternoon. In Canberra last week, the Roosters played almost the perfect game to blitz the Raiders.

Blake Ferguson made a triumphant return to Canberra but the inform centre is facing several months on the sideline after suffering a foot injury.

Cronulla showed glimpses of improvement against the Titans but suffered their 10th consecutive home ground loss. Not form that suggests an upset here.

At ANZ Stadium on Monday the Blue and Gold army will be out in force when the Eels and Tigers do battle. Chris Sandow engineered Parra’s win over Souths, showing the Eels can upset any team on any given day.

The Tigers came within a whisker of stealing a win against the Bulldogs. The Dogs saw an 18-point lead evaporate in the second half as the Tigers dominated. This could be a game with plenty of adlib footy. A tough game, but the Eels perhaps.

Melbourne and the Warriors clash at AAMI Park on Easter Monday. Cam Smith is chasing his 200th and went so close in Townsville.

The Warriors are also coming off a loss after failing to reel in the Broncos. Shaun Johnson was outstand-

ing in that game and if Melbourne can keep contained and off the ball, they can give Smith win number 200 here.

A sluggish Penrith were shell shocked after the Knights burst out of the boxes and blitzed them early in last week’s game.

The NQ Cowboys finally have the monkey off their back after their heart-stopping win on Monday night.

The Cowboys and JT stole the win with an inspirational final few minutes of football. The win was vital for their 2015 season.

Thy will need the guile and skill they showed against Melbourne when they take on Penrith on their home turf.

Back in the saddle and full of confidence after Monday’s win, the Cowboys can add another win here.

IT CERTAINLY does not get any better for a cricket enthusiast than Sunday’s win in the World Cup final.

The win was fantastic and truly a credit to Michael Clark, the Australian team and Boof Lehmann. It was a perfect end to a summer of cricket that began in the most tragic of circumstances.

Former Kiwi great Martin Crowe who is battling a recurrence of cancer penned an open letter to the Kiwis and Aussies prior to the game.

In his letter he paid tribute to both captains, in whom he sees many similarities.

This great of the game sees them both as men of substance and style and both misunderstood for a long time by their countrymen.

If you have not read or heard this moving tribute to the Kiwis and the Aussies, you should.

The semi-final between the Kiwis and the South Africans is sure to go down in the annals of cricket folklore, as will the devastating bowling of Mitchell Stark.

I doubt anyone watching the game could not have been anything other than impressed with the sportsmanship of the Kiwi players and the leadership of their captain Brendon McCallum.

He has revitalised Kiwi cricket and brought back some sanity to the game.

How good was it to see McCallum congratulating Clarke as he exited the MCG arena for the final time in the ODI format. It is the spirit in which the game should be played.

Perhaps now that he has a World Cup to his credit, some of M. Clarke’s knockers may also have retired. We can only hope.

One thing that was not as pleasing was the radio station that tracked down the Australian team after a night of celebrating and managed to get Brad Haddin to make a comment that he may have well regretted later in the day.

Of course the Stanthorpe boys attending the game were having a ball and regularly updated me on how thing were going, just to rub salt into the wound. Lucky ######!

- Casey RSL WRAP UP PREMIERSHIP RSL has dominated the Stanthorpe cricket season from round one and it was fitting that they wrapped up the season with a convincing win in the grand final and the premiership trophy on Saturday. Their opponents, Valleys were never going to die wondering and made RSL work for their win.

It was no surprise when RSL opted to bat first on the C.F. White wicket after winning the toss.

The RSL top order who have batted superbly all season lost only one wicket in the first 10 overs.

A partnership between Duane Lihou (46) and Sam Dowie (16) pushed the score along to 1/77 at drinks, with the game evenly balanced between bat and ball.

In the first over after the drinks break Josh Anderson got the break Valleys were looking for when Sam Dowie was dismissed. Incoming batsman Luke Brady picked up where Dowie left off.

His 38 included four boundaries.

Valleys fielded well throughout the game and Duane Lihou was out to a good catch on the boundary from Sandro Stefanon with the score at 3/93.

Valleys players and supporters had plenty to get excited about four overs later when Curtis Allen took a great catch to dismiss RSL danger man Ross Lupton cheaply. At 4/118 the game was evenly poised.

RSL captain Will Dowie replaced Lupton and played a fine captain’s knock. He remained not out 37 at the end of the innings as RSL built towards a good score.

The Stanthorpe contingent headed by captain Peter Patti kept me up to date with all the action from the MCG during Sunday's World Cup final.

They pushed for runs at every opportunity and at the end of the innings had posted 179 runs.

The RSL innings was not without drama. In the final over Bryce Jackson misread a nasty bouncer and was hit in the face. He suffered a fractured cheekbone.

Set 180 to win, the Valleys top order collapsed as the RSL openers Ross Lupton and Tom Garland dominated. Valleys were floundering with the score at 4/20. Partnerships between John Fletcher (41) and Anthony Marino and Josh Anderson steadily built on the Valleys score however as the run rate climbed to over nine an over, the task was looking bleak for Valleys.

Valleys captain Damian Anderson went down fighting, adding a slashing 27 runs late in the innings.

The RSL bowlers ripped through the remaining tail-enders to wrap up the game in the 34th over.

Ross Lupton has been outstanding for RSL throughout the season and fittingly earned himself the Stanthorpe Cricketer of the Year Award.

While he probably considered his performance on Saturday with the bat below par, he and his bowling partner in crime Tom Garlan certainly turned the tide of this game. Lupton took two wickets in his eight over spell for the addition of

only eight runs, putting enormous pressure on the Valleys batsmen.

Garlan, Luke Brady and Sam Dowie each took two wickets apiece. Luke Brady was named player of the final for his a fine all-round performance.

Brady scored 38 runs and took three wickets.

The win was RSL’s first since 2009 and was a well-deserved reward for a great team performance throughout the season and the finals.

Valleys captain Damian Anderson said after the game it was a disappointing way to end the season but he was proud of the performance of his team and congratulated Will Dowie and RSL on an outstanding season.

Umpires for the grand final were John “Chook” Hendry and Paul Smithers.

STIFF COMPETITION IN MEDLEY COMPETITION was stiff in the end of the month medley fourball at Stanthorpe Golf Club and a countback determined the winners.

Two teams returned 49 points, however Jake Mills and Keith Green had the better back nine (26 points) which was good enough to give them the win.

All reports indicate the result could have been better had it not been for the interference of a

wayward tree at the last hole.

Stanthorpe’s promising juniors, Hannah Reeves and Declan Beare teamed up and were narrowly beaten by the winners.

The pair shot a top front nine of 27 but experienced a few minor hiccups on the back nine.

On the way Declan picked up the pin shot at 3/12 and the balls on offer for the birdies nest.

Not to be outdone, Hannah claimed the ladies' pin at the same hole, 3/12.

Angelo Maugeri put his hand up for the remaining pin shot at 17 and Tric Fittock had the best ladies’ approach at 17.

Fred Wharton held the pro-pin at 5/14 while Aaron Simmers took pro-pins at 1/10 and 9/18.

In the rundown, Eric McLellan and Ron Batterham (47), Mick O’Brien and Dave Williams, Mark McCosker and Keith Allen (46) each collected a ball.

The afternoon was sponsored by long-time members and great supporters of the Stanthorpe Golf Club, Clive Smith and Keith Cobon.

STANTHORPE MALLET SPORTS NUMBERS were up for last week’s Association Croquet and three groups played.

Effey Russell and Margaret Dickenson teamed up to defeat Val Shephard and Heather Widderick 17-11. Carol Verwey and Grace Howard played an entertaining game but lost (18-25) to Joy Newman and Andrea Denkewitz, Joy and Andrea both had two breaks of three and Carol also had one break of three.

In the other game Pat Schnoor and Val Richardson teamed up against Jenny Widderick who played two balls. Jenny who had one break of three won 18-16. Despite the loss Pat Schnoor was in good touch. She played one break of five and another break of three.

Shirley Evans returned after a break and was quickly into form with some excellent shots. Her “jumps shot” was impressive considering her lack of match play. Dianne Wren shot another “hoop in one” and now leads the competition.

PREPARING FOR MEDAL WALLANGARA golfers played a stroke event

CLAYS FOLLOW HARD WORK THERE was much activity on the range at Inglewood SSAA. The monthly working bee last Sunday saw the surrounds of the pistol bays demolished in preparation for the construction of the club’s new six-metre by 22.5-mwtre cover.

After all that work last week it is back to the fun stuff this weekend, with clays on the menu.

Lynam edged out runner-up Rob Reeves.

Another Reeves, Hannah collected a ball in the rundown and also had the best gross. Angelo Maugeri also picked up a ball in the rundown and a meat tray for good measure. Rod Werner claimed the in shot on the 12th and Aaron Simmers was in form on the 17th. Dale Gillam took the Pro Pin. Bob Watts was seen leaving with the remaining meat tray.

Due to the Easter break there will be no Sporters this weekend, however the cards will be in the “honesty box” for anyone who feels like a game over the break. Things will be back on track the following week with tee-off at the normal time.

PHILLIPS REAPS REWARD SHOW holidays and golf sometimes go hand in hand - last week they went chicken in hand as 36 members ventured into the sunshine in search of chickens. They say the earlybird gets the worm, but the early golfer gets the bird or at least chook.

Collecting balls in the rundown were Ross Kingston (19), Charlie Morrison, Peter Hynes, John Devitt and Garry Adcock (18). REDBACKS SEASON OPENER THE Warwick Redbacks opened the AFL season with a big day of football at Reddies Oval on Saturday.

The day kicked off with the ladies pulling on their jerseys for the season opener against Dalby.

The girls who dedicated their game to Jamsyn Carter were beaten soundly by the 2015 premiers but lost no admirers in a tough game.

C GRADE CHAMP SHINES B&K MOTORS sponsored a single Stableford versus par event on Saturday. The Warwick club’s C Grade Champion, Jesse Harris scored a plus four to win the event. He was one of only four to keep their heads above water on Saturday.

Greg Sellick finished with a plus two to claim the runner-up spot. Rundown balls went to those with scores of plus one to minus two. Adrian Murphy (7), Jesse Harris (11), Greg Sellick (13) and Shane McKenzie (16) collected pins.

It was the dawn buster and a few loyal followers who rolled up on Sunday for the medley stableford. Dion Phillips again got the booty - runnerup was Peter Boney. Organisers are hoping that there will not be too many regulars hunting for Easter eggs or flying the coop to the coast for this Sunday’s event.

Due to the Easter break the April monthly medal will not be played on Saturday. Instead a single stableford sponsored by IGA has been scheduled.

The course and pro shop will be open Good Friday however the clubhouse will be closed.

NOMINATIONS EXTENDED NOMINATIONS for the 2015 Warwick Golf Club Matchplay championships have been extended until this Saturday, 4 April. The draw will be posted on the whiteboard in the clubhouse by 17 April and the first round of matches must be played on or before 3 May. WATTLES WIN LOCAL DERBY WATTLES regained bragging rights after Sunday’s game against the Cowboys at Fr Ranger Oval.

Cross 27-15. This was a very close game for 21 ends until Margaret won five of the next six ends. Congratulations Marg on your win. There were no social bowls played as the club had a team at the Summit and some ladies were unavailable to play.

THE SUMMIT BOWLING CLUB A BUSY weekend of bowls at the summit wrapped up last Sunday with the final of the A Grade club fours.

After a see-sawing game it was the team of Michael Surch, Paul Zamprogno, Alex Mattiazzi and Len Covill fended off of Brian Wilmot, Jamie Zamprogno Quinton Stanley and Wayne Thomas to win 19-13 Trophy Day on Saturday attracted a crowd for Triples games.

B. Brown E. Zanatta and K. Mungall (30) were too strong for B. Wilmot J. Zamprogno and W. Thomas (14). In a closer game T. Morris, A. White and D. Barker narrowly beat A. Zamprogno, P. Davis, and M. Sweeney 24-21.

STANTHORPE JUNIORS STANTHORPE junior golfers Dylan Barraclough and Hannah Reeves recently played in the Downs School Golf trials at Middle Ridge.

Both have been in great form at club level and carried that form into the trials.

The pair each placed second in their respective divisions and earned selection in the Downs squads to play in the State titles later in the year.

ALLORA STALWART RECOGNISED I WAS thrilled to hear earlier this week the SDRC had accepted a request to rename the Allora cricket oval the Keith K.O. Masters Memorial Oval.

Keith Masters had a lifetime association with the game and I was fortunate to play with and against him during his career.

Our paths crossed later as umpires and at Eastern Downs Cricket Association meetings. This is a fitting recognition for a man who gave so much to the game in Allora, Warwick and Eastern Downs.

SDRC Mayor Peter Blundell advised that the appropriate signage would be installed in the near future.
