Bikes on the Border The Ulysses AGM proved to be a hit on the Border as thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts enjoyed the region for a week. The well-behaved riders were warmly received while organisers are hoping the event has put the area on the biking map. FOR MORE, TURN TO PAGE 6
Cup has its winning way THE coveted $170,000 Albury Gold Cup may have been snatched up by French import Kourkam on Friday, but the event was ultimately a win for the Border. A 16,000-strong crowd flocked to Albury racecourse for the city’s most celebrated race day, proving to be a winner both on and off the track for punters who had travelled from across the country to attend the event. For all the details and more pictures, turn to page 2.

â– Hospital, school hall and mobile blackspots top long list of new projects...
MP back to work By ERIN SOMERVILLE A NEW emergency department for Albury Hospital, a multi-purpose hall for James Fallon High School, and fixing mobile blackspots are some of the projects that Albury MP Greg Aplin has in the pipeline for his fourth term. Mr Aplin, who will form part of the Baird Government, took out 57 per cent of first-preference votes in the NSW election, while his closest competitor, Labor candidate Ross Jackson, had secured more than 31 per cent as of Monday afternoon. Mr Aplin said he was looking forward to serving the electorate for another full term. “It’s back to work with renewed vigour and dedication, Mr Aplin said. “I’d like to express my thanks for the opportunity to continue to deliver. “We do have some of the biggest projects in the electorate in 20 years announced.
Mr Aplin said he will oversee the completion of the pre-election announced Riverina Highway upgrades east of Albury, the redevelopment of Greater Hume Shire multi-purpose healthcentres, and continue to work towards a better XPT service for regional areas. He told Albury Wodonga News Weekly that his goals for his new term include a new multi-purpose hall for James Fallon High School, working towards better emergency services for Albury Base Hospital, and upgrading the electorate’s road network. Mr Aplin said he hopes to see these potential projects funded largely by the privatisation of the state’s poles and wires. “Up to $6 billion will be released from the lease of poles and wires and I want to make sure our electorate benefits from that. Mr Aplin won the primary vote at all
polling venues, however both he and Mr Jackson were trumped by The Greens’ Niloufer King by the very small contingency who cast their vote at Sydney Town Hall. Ms King locked in four primary votes while Mr Jackson and Mr Aplin secured three and two votes respectively. The Labor Party had a small victory with a swing to Mr Jackson of more than 16 per cent in this year’s election, which he described as a rewarding result. “I’m very proud of the hard work that’s gone into this, Mr Jackson said. “It’s been a great ride. It’s a positive move for 2019. He said he may stand for the 2019 election but that he had a young family to consider. Mr Jackson said his next goal was to complete his Rail Heritage project.
Jean-Francois Rupp, Greg Aplin and Doug Aplin celebrate the Picture: ADAM WILSON victory on Saturday evening. 136957

City comes out for the day By ERIN SOMERVILLE THE Albury Gold Cup half day public holiday was a winner for the entire city with about 16,000 spectators, punters and revellers joining in on the fun at the Albury racecourse. The coveted $170,000 Albury Gold Cup was taken out by Tony McEvoy’s French star runner Kourkam in front of a cheering crowd. While strong runners on the field kept the punters happy, for many the event was simply a chance to get dressed up and let their hair down. “The highlights of the event is catcing up with friends I have not seen in years,“ Border resident Alix Weidner said, who had chosen to wear a beauitful yellow long-sleeve dress after Friday’s weather just tipped 20 degrees. “I think it’s great as a lot of people get to come back and catch up with friends while supporting the local community.“ News Weekly photographer ADAM WILSON was among the action, and caught all the trackside action, fashion stakes, and frivolity at the Albury Gold Cup. Check out our extensive photo gallery with all the highlights of the day at www. alburywodonga. starcommunity.com.au.

Targets of tagging AN art project worth around $10,000 has been rolled out across Albury to deter vandals from defacing utility boxes. The project has seen some of the city’s boxes ‘wrapped’ in images of Albury’s most iconic buildings, including the Post Office and Murray Conservatorium, and based on photographs taken by Charles Sturt University students over 10 years ago. The move is part of a plan to stop the city’s growing vandalism problem, which cost AlburyCity around
$90,000 to tackle in 2013 alone. Graffiti problems also continued to grow last year. Six Roads and Maritime Services and Essential Energy boxes have been wrapped under the scheme, which uses a special wax coating to prevent paint from sticking and are easily cleaned. Albury mayor Kevin Mack is a strong campaigner against graffiti, and is encouraging residents to tackle it before it grows out of control. He said removal of graffiti and tags within 48 hours is often an effective deterrent, while rewards are
10 detected with drugs on weekend POLICE remain concerned over substance abuse on the Border after 10 people were found carrying drugs in the area over the weekend. Drug dogs sniffed out 10 people in possession of drugs, including ecstasy, amphetamine, and cannabis, over the two-day operation targeting street level drug crime as part of Operation Albury Gold Cup. “Any detection of drugs is concerning,” Albury Chief Inspector Kim Sorensen said. “They were detected from all over the city, no specific area. “We have been doing this for a while and will continue as part of an ongoing push.” The operation took place in Albury, as well as Corowa and Mulwala, and involved local police, licensing police and the dog unit. The operation resulted in 10 drug detections, one warrant executed and one person charged with resisting arrest. Court attendance notices were issued to: A 21-year-old man from Thurgoona allegedly in possession of two ecstasy tablets. A 27-year-old man from Lavington allegedly in possession of 0.34 grams of amphetamine and also charged with an outstanding conviction warrant. A 26-year-old man from Albury allegedly in possession of an ecstasy tablet. A 25-year-old man from Albury allegedly in possession of two grams of amphetamine. A 32-year-old man allegedly in possession of 1.20 grams of cannabis was also charged with resisting arrest. A 36-year-old man allegedly in possession of 0.20 grams of cannabis. A 22-year-old man allegedly in possession of three ecstasy tablets. Police will continue to conduct these types of operations, targeting street level drug possession in the Albury area.
also issued for those who dob in a vandal. “When we get visitors to our city you don’t want graffiti to become second nature like in Sydney and Melbourne,” he said. The artistic concept to battle vandalism is also in-line with AlburyCity’s shift to greater recognise the city’s arts in line with the Albury Art Gallery developments. A meeting is expected to be held at a later date to determine if the project should be extended throughout the city to other graffiti-prone areas.
AlburyCity received funding from the NSW Department of the Attorney General and Justice for the project, and hopes further funding will continue if the project is successful. The utility boxes that have been wrapped include the Essential Energy box at Gertrude Colquhoun Park on Creek Street, the RMS box on the corner of Swift and Kiewa streets, and another on the corner of Wilson and David streets. Police officer assaulted, threatened By ERIN SOMERVILLE AN OFF-DUTY Albury police officer has been assaulted and threatened with a blade after she attempted to stop a thief on Friday evening. The high-ranking female off-duty officer and her friend were near a building site around 6.35pm when they saw a woman inside the fencing on the site and a vehicle parked nearby. The officer identified herself as a police officer and spoke to the woman, before a man appeared from near the vehicle
and both offenders attempted to leave. It is alleged the man pushed the officer a number of times and threatened her and her friend with a knife as they tried prevent the pair from getting into the vehicle and leaving the site. The man and woman then drove away in the vehicle. A 40-year-old woman was later arrested at a home on Swan Street on Saturday following an investigation. She was taken to Albury police station and charged with
stealing, trespass and shoplifting for an unrelated matter. The woman was given conditional bail to appear at Albury Local Court on Tuesday 14 April. Albury police will not publicly identify the name or rank of the off-duty officer, but have described her as being “very, very senior”. Inquiries into the incident are continuing and Albury detectives want to speak to a 30-year-old man who may be able to assist them with their inquiries.

RUGBY League fans on the Border are gearing up for one of the biggest weekends of the competition, as Manly Warringah Sea Eagles take on Canberra Raiders at Lavington for the round-five fixture. The Easter Saturday clash is shaping up to be a close one - with both teams sitting on just two points for the season as of Monday - as the Sea Eagles look to move from their unlucky 13th position on the ladder to take Canberra’s spot at 12th or even climb higher. The match is a positive move for NRL fans, with the Border only previously hosting NRL pre-season trials and a City-Country Origin fixture in 2011. AlburyCity mayor Kevin Mack said the match would help put the spotlight on Albury’s sporting strengths as well as rugby league. “This is a major coup for Albury and a significant endorsement by the NRL in both the council and the community that we are a premier host of major events," Cr Mack said. “The value of national brand recognition, live broadcasting and the city’s reputation as one of the nation’s premier regional sporting hosts cannot be understated. “We’ve been knocking on the door for an NRL fixture match for a number of years, so we are thrilled to have now secured this match for Albury on Easter Saturday." Tickets are now on sale via Ticketek, or from the Albury Entertainment Centre Box Office.

Three medals for Chiltern By ERIN SOMERVILLE IT MIGHT be fun and games, but the skills put to use by the Chiltern Fire Brigade at the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria State Rural Championships on the weekend can be seriously lifesaving. The defending champions were unable to hold onto their title at this year’s competition at St Arnaud, but the team of 25 Chiltern firefighters still managed to walk away with three medals from some hot competition in the six separate contests. This included a silver in the category Tanker drawing
water from a tank, and two bronze for Wet Hose and Ladder skills, and Hydrant and Tanker abilities. Teams are judged and ranked on the time they take to complete their tasks. While competition can be firey, the Championships are a great opportunity for Victoria’s much-appreciated firefighters to show off their impressive skills. “It really highlights the skills that we do possess and reaffirms the confidence of the communities,” Chiltern Fire Brigade second lieutenant and junior development co-ordinator Kurtis Hickling said.

“This year we fell a bit short, but to achieve in the top four is an achievement in itself. “We are already thinking about 2016 in Colac.” They joined Baranduda in representing the Border’s District 24 as part of 1300 competitors and 65 brigades that made up the competition. Young firefighters under 16 going through the junior development program also have the opportunity to take part in the VFBV Championships. The games are a highlight for the Chiltern brigade, who practise their skills on their simulated track.

ALBURY residents were kept in the dark on Saturday- and it was all for a good cause. AlburyCity switched off the lights on their facilities for an hour at 8.30pm on Saturday in support of Earth Hour 2015. The council joined one billion people taking part in the initiative to help strive for a greener planet. This year, Earth Hour in Australia celebrated Aussie food and farmers, reminding Australians of the need to tackle global warming for the sake of rural communities and the supply of fresh, healthy, home grown food. Mayor Kevin Mack said he was proud Albury was taking part in Earth Hour, and acknowledged it was a global call to action to every individual, business and community. “Switching off is a simple action that can make a difference and send a powerful message that we all care about the future of our community and the planet,“ Cr Mack said. Hume Bank also helped push the initiaive, and marked the event from Albury Botanic Gardens. Participants enjoyed an acoustic candelight event as part of the fourth annual Music by Moonlight to mark the occassion. “By hosting Earth Hour, we aim to raise awareness of the environment as well as be a part of an international movement that celebrates the bold idea that we can each make a difference,” explained Melissa Sweetland, Hume Bank general manager Customer Service, Sales and Marketing.

“I’ve had letters from businesses, that have been so complimentary. “Wodonga Council have been absolutely rapt, and the impact on the area has been phenomenal.” Police reported that the crowd had been very well behaved during their stay in the area. Despite the hard work that has been poured into the event, organisers told Albury Wodonga News Weekly it has all paid off as they
packed up the last of their equipment on Monday. “In the end if you can stand up and say it has been a fantastic effort, you’ve got to be happy with that.” Wodonga will not be eligible to host the Ulysses AGM again for the next 10 years, but organisers say it could once again be another hit on the Border in the future. “Perhaps if a different and younger committee were up to it!”

IF THERE was one thing that was clear at Saturday’s Ulysses parade, it was that bikers are loving the Border. The Ulysses AGM held in Wodonga has been hailed as success by organisers, who were still this week packing up the venue after thousands of Ulysses members descended on the Border for the annual meeting.
Over 3000 motorcyclists and spectators flocked to The Cube Wodonga on Saturday to enjoy the grand parade of motorbikes, and celebrate the end of a successful week. Organiser Blue Knowles said the event was loved by motorcyclists and locals alike. “The response we have had from the public has been extraordinary,” he said.

Welcome to Church
Sacred time for Christians By ERIN SOMERVILLE THIS week, the Anglican Parish of Northern Albury will be celebrating its most important events on the Christian calendar. The Easter period is a sacred time for Christians, and the local Anglican churches will be taking time to mark the occasion through a number of services and events. “It’s the most important time of the year, recognising the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and His Resurrection,” Rector Reverend Peter McKeague said. Good Friday will be a special day for not only the parish, but for other Christians as well, who will come together in North Albury and take part in the combined churches Stations of the Cross. This event will retrace Jesus’ journey from his condemnation to his crucifixion, and is a traditional observance for many Christian Traditions. It will involve a number of local churches, and provides an opportunity for a public witness to the events at the heart of the Christian Faith. Jesus, the Son of God, died on the cross for our salvation and rose victorious over death, thereby reconciling the world to God, bridging the gulf human wrongdoing had created. The Good Friday event will begin at 10.30am at St Mark’s Church, before heading to the Sal-
vation Army, Trinity Uniting Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Mate Street. A feast of hot cross buns in the Sacred Heart Hall will follow the service. “It’s a time to relax and enjoy fellowship afterwards. Easter Sunday will be another big day for the parish. “Easter is a time to celebrate the resurrection, which is the linchpin of Christian faith.” Each of the parish’s churches will have an Easter Sunday Service, with St Paul’s Jindera starting at 8am, St James’ Lavington at 8.30am, St John’s Thurgoona 9am, and St Mark’s Northern Albury at 10am. Those who are looking for a different way to mark the important day can attend an Easter sunrise service at Eastern Hill look out at 6.30am. This is organised each year by the Salvation Army and Church of God. All are welcome to attend. Messy Church, which runs every second Sunday of the month at St Mark’s, is also coming up again on 12 April and is a popular way for families to enjoy church with children. The program involves arts and crafts, usually with a particular theme, music, stories, and a meal. Messy Church starts at 4pm and runs until 6pm.
Reverend Peter McKeague.
Reverend Christine Page.
Sunday School runs every first Sunday of the month at St Paul’s Jindera from 10.30am and at St Mark’s on the third Sunday from 10am.
There is an enthusiastic Youth Group that meets fortnightly at St Mark’s every second Wednesday from 6.30pm to 8pm.
Celebration of the Resurrection By ERIN SOMERVILLE EASTER is a very special time for the members at Albury’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and this year they’ll be inviting you to join in the celebration of Jesus’ Resurrection. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrates Easter with the rest of the Christian world this weekend, remembering the atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. “We believe the atonement of Jesus Christ is the most important thing that has happened in the history of the world,” Sister Patricia Gausnell said. “He overcame death and made it possible for us to be resurrected, too.” To celebrate the sacred occasion, the Albury church will be holding a sacrament meeting on Easter Sunday, complete with joyous songs about the saviour, a choir, and an organist. While the church has no paid ministry, it uses this to its advantage and invites different members of the church to prepare and give a talk at each sacrament meeting.
This allows for variety, and members and visitors alike can enjoy a talk like this at their Easter Sunday gathering. While members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints mark this important time on the Christian calendar, it’s also a time to reflect on the good works of Jesus Christ and carry them on in our own everyday lives. As part of this, the Mormons dedicate much of their lives to helping out those in need through great humanitarian projects. Young men, women and seniors of the church dedicate two years to missionary work. Currently 80,000 missionaries serve throughout the world at their own expense. One of the church’s many current projects is helping those in need in Africa, by providing clean drinking water, wheelchairs, immunisation programs, and improving midwifery practices. The church is also dedicated to helping in time of disasters. In the Black Saturday fires in Victoria, the church provided substantial funds
for rebuilding. Latter-day Saints believe the most important of the Lord’s work you will ever do will be within the walls of your own home. Each family is assigned a home teacher to visit and assist with family needs. Locally, members carry on good work through the Family History Centre at their church, which allows residents to look through the world’s largest stockpile of family history files and gain a better connection to their family and ancestors. The Family History Centre is open to the public each Wednesday from 6pm until 9pm, and Thursday from 8am to noon, and 6pm until 9pm. Experienced volunteers are on hand to help with genealogical research. Three computers are available with free access to several subscription websites, such as Ancestry.com, Findmypast.com, and Myheritage. com. Each Wednesday evening a sign language class is held at 6pm and all are invited. Jesus Christ was a perfect example of service and charity. Latter-day

The respite room also includes a bedroom with a double bed, television, kitchenette with a microwave, fridge and table, and a large bathroom with plenty of room for walker and wheelchair. Ms Walsh said people used their program for a variety of reasons, whether it was for family members or carers who needed a break, for elderly people living alone who want addition-

Over 55’s... Compassion and caring is the key ALMOST three years since she became Mardross Gardens village manager, Anne Martin is incredibly proud of the sense of community she has fostered within the village. “The most important part of the job is being there for the residents,” Ms Martin said. “Whether the residents need my help getting around the village, arranging activities, or linking them to community services, I enjoy making their life better by helping with their needs. “Often, our residents just need a friendly ear, or a warm smile, and that makes all the difference. “Knowing that the residents really appreciate what I do - I think that’s important, and it motivates me to make the community even better.” Mardross Gardens is an active rental retirement community with 37 residents between the ages of 55 and 95. “Our residents really enjoy Mardross Gardens’ rental retirement model. “Instead of buying a property with large upfront expenses, residents sign a secure rental lease, offering them all the lifestyle and safety benefits of a retirement community, but with the increased flexibility to free up funds for things like holidays, or presents for the grandkids,” she said. “The Mardross Gardens social club meets once a month and organises regular activities including barbecues and bingo, which is in addition to the regular games and activities I put on for the residents. “The residents think the village is a great place to live, and I’m proud to be their village manager.”

Over 55’s... Aged care is all about advice HERE, we look at a few cases based on real-life experiences that Border residents have had to face. Having Generations Aged Care help plan your transition to care will reduce the chance of unexpected surprises when the time to move comes.
Mr Smith Without seeking advice, Mr Smith moved from his family home in SA into a retirement village nearer his son hoping to be able to live independently. He kept the family home vacant as his grandchildren loved holidaying there. Unfortunately, within a couple of weeks it became clear that he could not cope living independently in the retirement village and accepted a bed in a residential aged care facility. If Mr Smith had moved directly from his family home into the residential aged care facility, his family home would have been exempt from the Centrelink assets test for a period of two years.
Providing professional and caring advice to guide you through the financial complexities associated with planning for Aged Care.
The team at Generations Aged Care can help guide you on your journey into aged care living. 136794
In this case though, the moment he permanently moved to the retirement village, his family home was assessed by Centrelink as an investment property. For aged care purposes, his former residence was considered the retirement village. The result - his means tested care fee is higher and he lost his small entitlement to an age pension. He now has to pay all his aged care fees from his savings. Mrs Brown Mrs Brown moved from her family home into a residential facility and made an arrangement to pay her accommodation payment by daily payment. Without seeking advice, her family home was put up for sale for a period of six months and then a family decision was made to rent the home, as the family did not have the time and energy to worry about selling it. The fees payable for the daily accommodation payment, basic daily care fee and the means tested care fee exceeded her DVA pension entitlement until the home was rented. One child is now making fortnightly payments from their own funds to pay off the debt owed to the facility. Due to their financial situations, the siblings are unable to assist in paying down the debt owed to the facility. The house will be left equally to the four children. The Kellys Over an extended family lunch, it was decided that mum and dad should rent a place in town as it would be easier for them to cope as their health deteriorated. Without seeking advice, they moved from their family home/farm into a rental property and they
now have the extra expense of rent to pay. Their will says that they wish to leave the familyhome/farm to their sons. The family home/farm, previously excluded from the Centrelink assets test, is now considered an investment property. They are considered to be non-homeowners by Centrelink and their age pension entitlement has reduced. When they eventually move to residential care, their family home/farm will be fully assessable and will count towards the calculation of the accommodation payment and the means tested care fee. The result will mean an increased means tested care fee. The cash flow deficit will be funded from their savings which are earmarked to be left to their daughters. In most cases a person’s greatest asset is their family home and what you do with it may have a big impact on your Centrelink/DVA entitlements or aged care fees. Generations can help you with planning advice and can be contacted on (02) 6056 8777. “Don’t leave home without talking to us”. Over 55’s... Chance to scale down By ERIN SOMERVILLE IF YOU’RE looking to downscale your home and worries, and upgrade your lifestyle, you can’t miss Riverwood’s open day this month. On 17 April, Riverwood sales manager Wayne Matsinos and his team of friendly staff will be throwing open the doors and giving you a glimpse of the wonderful lifestyle you could enjoy at this popular estate. A total of eight units will be open for inspection, and are on the market and guaranteed to be a popular drawcard of the day. All of the homes are two-bedroom, are refurbished to include all the comfortable and modern touches, and some even come complete with their own personal yard. Following popularity at previous open days, demand is expected to remain high, so those interested in making a lifestyle change are encouraged to visit on 17 April so they don’t miss out. “It’s a great opportunity for everyone to come and work their way through the village,” Mr Matsinos said. “We have some great facilities, including an indoor pool, a bowling green, and a great community centre.
“We’ve got lots of activities happening all the time.” Visitors will have the chance to try the great Riverwood lifestyle firsthand at the open day bowls tournament, and will have the opportunity to chat to residents and gain a better feel for the village. The open day will begin at 11am and a light lunch will be provided afterwards. “It’s a great time to visit before winter sets in and when the beautiful, landscaped grounds and gardens are at their best. “People have shown interest in the past and it’s the perfect opportunity for them to view all the units at the one time and take their pick.” Units range in price from $170,000 up to $290,000, so there is something on offer for all tastes and budgets. Riverwood also has a co-located hostel that can provide increased care for residents who need it. “We offer everything for the ageing population that might need to move out of their homes and into better facilities.” RSVP for Riverwood Open Day is due 13 April, and you can make your booking on (02) 6021 4121.

Over 55’s... Lucy farewelled at aged care THIRTY years with one employer is an outstanding achievement deserving a round of applause. And that’s exactly what happened at afternoon tea recently at Albury and District Aged Care, when Lucy McPherson retired after 30 years of dedicated service. The room was filled with residents, family members and past and present staff. Facility manager, Angela gave a beautiful speech and presented Lucy with a certificate of service and a box of glittering flowers. There was much laughter and even a few tears, as Lucy accepted her gifts and reflected on her time at Albury and District. Starting in 1985 as a ward assistant she eventually found her way into the kitchen preparing and serving the delicious meals Albury and District is famous for. Her signature fare was her delicious scones for morning tea; large high and soft and she always went the “extra” mile for the residents; adding a posy of flowers or baking a cake for birthdays and special occasions. Lucy always looked for-
ward to the continual banter with residents, particularly around their opposing footy teams and residents asking for second and sometimes third helpings of Lucy’s fine fare. Long-term resident Sid enthused “Lucy is the best cook in the whole wide world”. Many of Lucy’s former colleagues sent their well wishes; Maz, Bev, Lyn and Debra all worked with Lucy. “My memories of Lucy are that she took me under her wing, showed me patience and kindness; she truly is a beautiful lady,” Debra remarked. Lucy’s time at Albury and District has been truly a family affair. Her sister Heather and her daughter Michelle and sons, Christopher and Craig have all worked there over the years, while her other son Scott has worked at Albury and District for 25 years. More recently Lucy’s granddaughter, Brook completed work experience as part of the lifestyle team, so Lucy’s family legacy lives on. After the speeches, gifts and applause, it was time for afternoon tea, before Lucy took a bow and the curtain lowered on a stellar career.
A fond farewell from Albury and District Aged Care colleagues, from left, Joshua Wilson, Di Farrell, Mary Allum, Sharon McMahon, Lucy McPherson, Julie Jones and Nada Raharuhi. 136805

Rock day with the mostest By TANIA PHILLIPS
The Angels will be appearing on A Day On The Green at All Saints Estate on 11 April. unforgettable hits. For this 12th annual event at All Saints Estate - let there be rock, we say. The Angels celebrated their 40th anniversary last year with the May release of two commemorative careerspanning albums; ‘The Angels Volume 1 - 40 Greatest Studio Hits’ and ‘The Angels Volume 2 - 40 Greatest Live Hits’, backed up with a predominantly sold-out tour. Since joining in 2011, frontman Dave Gleeson has totally re-energised
the band, prompting two albums of new material ‘Take It To The Streets’ (2012 - their first studio album in 14 years) and ‘Talk The Talk’ (2014) and a renewed love of touring resulting in constant sold out shows around the country. The band will be recording again early next year. The Angels debuted on the a day on the green stage in 2012 and received what can only be described as an overwhelmingly raucous reception.
1179229-KC14-15
DAVE Gleeson is living the dream. As a young boy growing up in Cardiff, Newcastle and listening to his older brother’s stories about their antics at concerts for their favourite band - little did he know that one day he would be out front of the outfit singing the iconic songs. But that’s just what has happened and the former Screaming Jets frontman is now part of one of Australia’s most iconic rock outfits - The Angels. And now he is singing the songs of the band that he and all of us of that generation grew up with. And this month he’s coming with the Brewster boys and the rest of the band to All Saints Estate Rutherglen for A Day On The Green. But this won’t be a sedate afternoon of chamber music and wine - get ready to rock! A Day On The Green launches an invasion of Australian rock ’n’ roll with its next event at All Saints Estate, Rutherglen on Saturday, 11 April 2015. Six great artists - The Angels, Baby Animals, Jon Stevens, Richard Clapton, Dragon and Boom Crash Opera will take to the stage for a mighty day of rock ’n’ roll and all for just $89.90! The A Day On The Green classic Aussie rock shows are hugely popular all around Australia - what’s not to love. Good food and wine, friends, a magnificent location and five hours of
Another a day on the green crowd favourite is the Suze DeMarchi-led Baby Animals. The band has been warmly embraced since reuniting and releasing ‘This Is Not The End’, their first album of new music since 1993. Recent singles ‘News Email’ and ‘Stitch’ sit well next to fan favourites like ‘Early Warning’, ‘One Word’ and ‘Rush You’ in the set list. Suze remains one of rock’s most charismatic frontwomen. Through his solid studio recordings and incredible live performances,
Jon Stevens has deservedly earned a reputation as one of Australia’s most respected and popular performers. Richard Clapton has endeared himself to music-lovers everywhere through his heartfelt inspired performances and a songbook that defines our times. With hits like ‘Girls On The Avenue’, ‘Deep Water’, ‘Capricorn Dancer’, Richard was a thoroughly deserving and popular inductee into the ARIA Hall Of Fame. He released his much-acclaimed autobiography ‘The Best Years Of Our Lives’ in August this year. With an unforgettable run of chart-toppers like ‘Are You Old Enough’, ‘April Sun In Cuba’, ‘Still In Love With You’, ‘Rain’ and many others, Dragon’s legacy is of one of Australasia’s most successful pop bands. Joined many years ago by veteran vocalist Mark Williams as frontman, a revitalised Dragon has continued to release new material and tour nationally. Growing out of the fertile post-punk scene in Melbourne, Boom Crash Opera hit heady heights with smash hits ‘Great Wall’, ‘The Best Thing’, ‘Onionskin’, ‘Dancing In The Storm’ and ‘Get Out Of The House’. The band members have continued to work in music, theatre and TV worlds, reconvening sporadically for live appearances. All Saints Estate, Rutherglen - Saturday 11 April 2015.
Life behind the (colour) bars Get Hard (MA) Starring: Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart SOME have criticised this film for its lack of political correctness. In fact, they should have slammed it just because it’s not very good... or very funny, for that matter. The premise is a boomer: alleged white-collar criminal Will Ferrell has been sentenced to 10 years’ hard time in San Quentin. With 30 days until the cell door slams, he pays black carwash operator and alleged
gangsta Kevin Hart to teach him how to stay alive in the pen. Now that’s funny: and Ferrell is certainly perfectly cast, playing exactly the same role as always of befuddled uncool white guy. Maybe it’s the script, or maybe the decidedly unfunny and surprisingly diminutive sidekick Kevin Hart, but the fact remains that the thing falls flat. There are a handful of good scenes. A simulated prison riot was enjoyable, as was Ferrell's attempt to join the local black street gang.
A few other scenes rise a mild chuckle as well, but mostly the laugh-o-meter doesn’t budge. If anything, this film is most reminiscent of The Interview another cracking idea that failed to launch. Be warned, too - there’s plenty of off-colour humour, plenty of language, and a ton of racial and gay jokes. None of that confronts me... it’s just not very funny. Be glad we live in the West, where such a film can be made. Be sorry it wasn’t funnier. - Jason Beck

Back ... on a mission from God BLUES Brothers with a Belushi blessing ... it seems like yesterday that brothers, Jake and Elwood Blues, played by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, invited the world to join them on ‘a mission from God’. The hit movie The Blues Brothers was a lovable tale of redemption about the pair of paroled convicts, who set out to save the Catholic orphanage in which they grew up from the taxation department. As the story goes, they re-formed their rhythm and blues band, The Blues Brothers, and organised a concert to raise $5000 to pay off the debt and save the day. But things never went according to plan for Jake and Elwood, and their story evolved into a rollicking journey of misadventure, and one of best-loved movies of all time. Now, 30 years on, the Blues Brothers live on in the Official Blues Brothers Revue, and Australian Blues Brothers fans are set to get a nostalgic musical fix when the pair arrives from America in April to begin an Austra-
lian Tour. Starring Canadians Wayne Catania as Jake and Kieron Lafferty as Elwood, the Official Blues Brothers Revue is the only Blues Brothers show to be officially sanctioned by Dan Aykroyd and wife of the late John Belushi, Judith Belushi Pisano. Judith, who is an accomplished writer, graphic designer and artist, married John Belushi in Aspen, Colorado in 1976. They remained married until John’s untimely death on March 5 1982. Eight years later, Judith married Victor Pisano. Judith Belushi Pisano and Victor Pisano, along with Dan Aykroyd, continued to fly the Blues Brothers’ flag in John’s honour. Together, they created ‘The Blues Brothers Revival’ which was written by Victor and produced by Judy and Dan. After auditioning over 200 Blues Brothers teams for the world premiere of their musical, Judith, Victor and Dan came across Wayne Catania and Kieron Lafferty, who were immediately cast in the lead roles.
More recently, Kieron Lafferty and Wayne Catania joined creative forces with Judy Belushi and Anne Beatts (head writer, Saturday Night Live 1975-’80) to write the pilot for a television show based on the continuing adventures of Jake and Elwood, aka
The Blues Brothers. But until this latest venture hits Australian shores, the Official Blues Brothers Revue is as close as you are likely to get to Jake and Elwood, and the music and magic of one of the greatest musical partnerships in the
history of the silver screen.

Clear aims of investing in property
Enzo Raimondo CEO Real Estate Institute of Victoria
AUSTRALIANS love bricks and mortar. Not only is home ownership the great Australian dream, but when we have spare cash to invest or have paid off the mortgage and want to put our equity to work, many of us turn again to property, buying for investment. While the term ‘property investor’ conjures visions of an individual with a broad property portfolio, it actually applies to many of us. According to the Real Estate Institute of Australia, the latest taxation statistics show 14.9 per cent of taxpayers are investors in the residential property market. The majority of those are ordinary “mums and dads” with only one investment property. In the latest
available statistics, 2010-’11, 73 per cent of investors had only one such property. And in the previous five years there was substantial growth in the number of such investors. For most of us negative gearing which enables investors to claim a tax deduction for expenses on an investment property - provides an opportunity, and incentive, to invest. However, it’s important to remember that the same principles apply when buying an investment property as when buying your own home. In particular, any investment purchase should be underpinned by thorough research. This includes view-
ing the property, preferably several times. After deciding on preferred locations and whether to buy a house or apartment, start by checking out median prices in those areas. Consult your bank, draw up your budget and be clear about your maximum price. There are many great properties out there, do not be tempted to exceed your maximum if you find “the right” one. Make a list of features you must have and those on which you would compromise. Remember: this is a rental; those criteria may be very different from those for your home. For example, you may be willing to spend time on a high-mainte-
nance, hard to clean home, but a rental property should be hard-wearing and easy to maintain. Think about what would make your property attractive to tenants. For example, you may enjoy driving to work, but rental property proximity to public transport is essential. If buying a family home to rent out, is it near schools? If buying a trendy apartment, tenants will want cafes nearby. Most importantly, put aside emotion. When buying your home you are looking for “the one”. But you don’t have to love your investment property - it needs to meet a particular purpose, and do that job well.
Location, location and backyard blitz THIS two-bedroom unit is only two blocks from Centro Lavington and has an enclosed rear yard. The open plan living area includes a reverse-cycle split-system heater/cooler and large two-door linen cupboard. Both bedrooms have built-in robes, the bathroom and laundry are separate, and it has a modern electric kitchen. The carport has access to the backyard, and the front and rear lawns are mown by a contractor. Nearby are bus stops, parks, a childcare centre, school, and Centro Lavington Shopping Centre.

Something in the air THERE is something in the air at this home that makes it stand out from others on the market. Whether it is its character, its tranquillity, or the fact it just feels like home, you can find it at this Hodson Place house tucked away in a peaceful pocket of Wodonga. This four-bedroom home is a treat from the moment you walk in. A large, functional kitchen with a breakfast bar, self-closing drawers, Miele dishwasher, and 900mm gas cooktop are just the start of this amazing room. It also comes with plenty of cupboard storage, and overlooks a casual living area. Best of all, it has direct access to the home’s outstanding decking area. The home has a separate formal living/dining area that oozes class, with full-length cedar windows and floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors that bring in
the light and enhance the atmosphere. The four bedrooms are all generous in size, and come with built-in storage, while the master suite also comes complete with a large walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. A real treat of this home is the renovated garage, which is attached to the master suite and offers a beautiful space for a parents’ retreat, study, or child’s play room. This space can be divided up into two areas, and also has abundant shelving storage. Best of all, a wood burner helps provide a cosy atmosphere as you snuggle down in this private section of the home and soak up the silence. The home also comes complete with ducted heating and cooling. It continues to speak in class and character outside.
The beautiful timber decking sits beautifully under a canopy of ornamental grapes, which are fitting for when you want to sip on your wine and overlook the sparkling in-ground swimming pool. The pool is the gem of the backyard, meaning the rest of your private garden is very easy maintenance for those who would prefer to spend their time lazing by the pool with a book in hand. The front of the home also has a quaint and private patio area, great for your morning coffee in peace. The laundry of this home is also great in size, well located for easy line access, and has suitable storage. You’ll always love this gorgeous area of Wodonga, which is close to walking tracks and parks, and is in a safe and friendly corner of the city.

Local Sport Young shooter well on target COROWA teen James Willett set a junior world record in qualifying at his first International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup in Al Ain, UAE. Finishing the round with 142/150 targets the 19-year-old junior double trap shooter put in a huge effort to star on day one. Shooting alongside some of the best athletes in the world, including Olympians and World Cup medallists, in a field that could well have mirrored an Olympic final, Willett qualified in second place for the final. In a brilliant finals effort by the young Australian debutant, he shot 23/30 targets, narrowly missing out on the bronze medal match, and the chance to win an Olympic quota for Australia. Willett rose to fame last year, when he won the 2014 World Junior Down the Lane Championship in New Zealand, after winning two of their national championships. He also won a silver medal at the Junior Universal Trench Championship in Lonato, Italy, last year. Shooting Australia CEO
James Willett aims high. Picture: ISSF/Nicolo Zangirolami Damien Marangon said that Willett was definitely one to watch out for. “James has come to his first ISSF World Cup and shot an incredible score. He matched it with the best shooters in the world, set a new junior world record and let the senior men know that there is a new kid on the block,” Marangon said. Willett’s family has been right behind him in the pursuit of his dream to represent Australia at the Olympic Games. So much, that they have purposebuilt an entire double trap layout on the farm so he can practise daily.
National coaching director for the Australian Clay Target Association Suzy Balogh said she was happy to see Australia’s Winning Edge strategy working well. “It is exciting to see a young, dedicated junior come through the system and fire up at a world class level. James is a quiet, unassuming person, with an incredible focus. He has shot a score in Double Trap that we have not seen in Australia in a very long time, which puts him in the class of our elite shooters,” Balogh said. Burns getting better by the year By CRAIG McMILLAN – BENDED ELBOW CYCLING TEAM WHEN most people are looking to slow down, Wodonga’s evergreen cyclist Paul Burns only wants to get faster. Proving age is no barrier to fitness and enjoying competition, the popular “Burnsie” last week signed on as a “Rookie” for the Bended Elbow Cycling Team. Team leader Paul Ingwersen didn’t hesitate to sign the popular local identityto the team. “They broke the mould when the made Burnsie, he is a unique mix of competitive spirit with a huge heart in seeing others from youth to those in senior years get out and enjoy their cycling,” Mr Ingwersen said. “His alignment with our team goals from the promotion of the sport couldn’t be stronger, and his sense of humour keeps us on our toes. “He’s a great role model for anyone wanting to get involved in cycling later in life.” Burnsie started his cycling career after following his passion for Rugby League into his late

thirties, a quick stint in Triathlon was curtailed by runner’s knees, before he found fitness and enjoyment on the bike. It was never about the results, it was always to enjoy the social aspect of getting stuck in at grass roots level of a sport. Soon to enter his septuagenarian years, there is no sign of him slowing down after picking up a solid second place in last weekend’s Deniliquin Street Race Criterium, edged out in the race to the line by a rider 54 years his junior. “There was a huge amount of drama in the opening laps with riders struggling on the tricky course, so I stayed near the front and focused on a good position for the finish. Unfortunately I led the sprint for the finish out too early and was pipped on the line, always next year!” The Bended Elbow Racing Team’s focus is to promote cycling in the Border region and to encourage riders of all abilities to enjoy the benefit and pleasures of cycling. With a Masters team to be active promotors for participation of all ages, and a Development team to grow young competitive cycling numbers, the team riders’ ages span over 50 years and with a wide variety of experience. The team riders all contribute to promotion of cycling, the summers Time Trial Series was one such example with new initiatives planned over the next 12 months.
