Ruckus all set to rock hills its latest originals, including the title to their award-winning CD ‘Love This Country’ that debuted at 26 in the Top 40 of the Country Music Charts.

Along with the music, there will be a sausage sizzle, coffee and tea and a visit from the ice-cream van, and loads of space to spread a picnic rug, and for the kids to run off some of their easteregg-fuelled energy.

Local businesses have once again been outstandingly generous with Upper Yarra Community Enterprise (Warburton and Yarra Junction Community Bank) sponsoring the event, Warbur-

ton Hardware donating first prize of a wheelbarrow full of tools, and numerous other businesses donating great prizes.

Raffle tickets will be on sale in the lead-up to Easter at the Warburton Hardware and the caravan park.

Over the years, local schools, sporting clubs, emergency services and Ted’s Track Keepers have been among the groups supported by the event.

The Easter Fund-raiser is free, but, as the name implies, the aim is to raise funds, so be sure to take along some

spending money to an all-round success.

Be sure also to take along your dancing shoes. According to John, there’s never been an Easter Fund-raiser yet without the Nutbush, and 2015 won’t be any different.

“It’s all about having fun, families and friends getting together to enjoy a relaxing Easter Sunday with music and dancing, and helping our local organisations,” John said.

“We love putting it on and are hoping that this year is the biggest ever.”

The event runs from noon to 5pm.

IT MAY be a new Easter tradition, but it’s one that has become a ‘must do’ part of Warburton’s Easter.

Musician John Seegers and supporters have organised the Warburton Annual Easter Fund-raiser for the past five years, raising over $40,000 for local groups and bringing locals and visitors together for fun.

This year the event will be held at the Warburton Football Ground with local bands Ruckus and the Yarra River Band on stage for a lively afternoon of

great rock, country and blues music.

The Yarra River Band was formed in 2009 and has a great following at festivals and hotels including the Reefton and Sam Knott, and at other gathering places such as the Warburton Golf Club and Alfred’s Homestead in Warrandyte.

The multi-award winning Ruckus has played at festivals and venues locally and around the country and has a growing legion of fans.

The Easter Fund-raiser will be a real treat for those fans, and would-be fans, with the band including some of

By KATH GANNAWAY TWO very classy Warburton acts come together with the inaugural Easter Artrageous Art Exhibition at Oscars On the Yarra.

The Artrageous Painters have put together an exhibition that will add another exciting aspect to Warburton’s Easter attractions.

Oscars on the Yarra is hosting the exhibition, and again, will provide visitors and locals with a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a meal in the beautiful setting by the Yarra River.

There will also be plenty of opportunities for visitors, and locals in holiday mood, to purchase a lasting reminder of their Warburton escape.

The exhibition opens on Saturday 4 April, and runs through to Sunday 26 April.

Flash fire QUICK-THINKING helped to prevent tragedy last week, when quick winds picked up a Badger Creek burn-off and spread it through a paddock and into bushland. The fire started on Thursday, 26 March, when a burn-off in a Pine Avenue paddock spread out-of-control into nearby trees and jumped the road, threatening a nearby boarding kennel.

CFA crews were called out by nearby residents, and the fire was declared under control less than 20 minutes later. For the full story, turn to page 3.

‘No’ to knock-down deal

By JESSE GRAHAM and KATH GANNAWAY A BADGER Creek couple have refused a debt-reduction deal from the council after alleging contractors stole and burnt belongings in a 2013 demolition.

Carol Gallagher and James Fewster have hit back at the Yarra Ranges Council after a deal was proposed

earlier in the year to reduce their debt from a court-ordered demolition by $9500.

The deal was sent by Yarra Ranges Council CEO Glenn Patterson, in response to a letter from the Victorian Ombudsman, recommending a reduction in their $37,119 demolition bill.

The bill for the demolition, which will become a debt against the property, would have become $27,619 on

the proviso that the couple could not disclose any details of the settlement to third parties, such as the media.

The release form for the agreement also stated that no further claims could be made against Yarra Ranges Council in relation to the incident.

But the couple refused the deal, including when their deadline for accepting was extended, stating the offer was not enough, and did not replace the

items they claim were destroyed.

“We want that debt totally wiped and compensation for everything they took,” Ms Gallagher told the Mail.

“It’s so wrong what they’ve done, and I want them to pay, otherwise they’re going to do it to other people.”

The demolition was carried out on 25 and 26 November, after the courts ordered that sheds built without a permit on the couple’s Don Road property

were to be taken down.

Ms Gallagher and Mr Fewster claim that they had removed personal belongings from the sheds and were in the process of demolishing them with a private contractor when they hit the council deadline, and that the councilappointed contractors destroyed or removed the belongings along with the sheds.

Rolling Green concert called off due to injury

By JESSE GRAHAM CATASTROPHE was narrowly avoided last week, when a burn off in Badger Creek took off and spread into nearby bushland.

The fire began about 3.20pm on Thursday 26 March, when a burn off in a Pine Avenue paddock spread into grass and became out of control.

After burning extensive amounts of the paddock, the fire spread into trees beside the road, jumped the road, and began to spread into nearby bushland near the Badger Creek Boarding Kennels and Cattery.

The kennel’s staff started sprinkler systems and began to run a fire drill to defend the property and the animals within, though the fire was stopped in its path.

Badger Creek and Healesville CFA crews both attended the blaze, which was declared under control about 15 minutes later.

Healesville CFA Captain Graeme Bates said while it was a good time of the year to burn off excess vegetation, property owners should not bite off more than they can chew, and should have the means to extinguish their fires if it began to spread.

“Now is a good time to be burning off, but you have to watch the weather,” he said.

“You know, the wind picks up, the undergrowth is still dry - you have to make sure you have good heaps and an extinguisher if you get into trouble.”

He said that conditions were expected to become wetter and more friendly for burnoffs in coming weeks.

“In a couple of weeks, it’ll be safer, because there’ll be more grass and it won’t

run,” Capt Bates said.

“At the moment, it’s such a dry area and, with dry grass around and with this wind, it runs and people won’t be able to contain it themselves.”

Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson attended the fire and said he did not expect the owner to be charged or fined in relation to the fire.

“In the circumstances, there’s no actual property damage, other than to the grass on his own land,” Sgt Coulson said.

“It’s a reminder for people to be extreme-

ly mindful that, although the fire restriction period has finished, any burning-off needs to be suitably done.”

Owner of Badger Creek Boarding Kennels and Cattery Paul O’Neill told the Mail he was pleased with his staff’s response to the incident.

Mr O’Neill said the workers alerted the CFA, got the property’s sprinkler system running and then went out to rally the animals in a safe place until the fire was under control.

The official Fire Danger Period, where burning off of all kinds is prohibited, ended on Monday 23 March.

‘No’ go on knock-down deal From page 1 The council furiously denied the allegations at the time, including at a public council meeting on 28 January, 2014.

But in a letter from the Victorian Ombudsman’s office on 20 November 2014 to Ms Gallagher and Mr Fewster, Deputy Ombudsman John Taylor wrote that a number of deficiencies were identified in the council’s handling of the complaint.

Mr Taylor wrote that the council did not keep adequate photographic and documentary proof of items removed or destroyed, the state of those items, the reason the property was considered unsightly or dangerous and whether it had authority to remove or destroy the items.

“We concluded that it is difficult to substantiate what items of your personal property the council removed or destroyed,” he wrote.

“However, on the available evidence, it appears that the council removed a number of items of your property outside the court orders.”

Mr Taylor wrote that he considered council’s offer of a $9500 reduction fair, but the council has refused to reveal how they came to that figure.

“Basically, the Ombudsman said council had no right to destroy the property,” she said.

“It sickens me, to think it happened and we know it happened, there’s no disputing that.

“I would have thought an apology would have been appropriate.”

Following a further request from the Mail on whether more than one quote was asked for, whether the chosen quote was the lowest, and council’s policy on nondisclosure clauses, mayor Maria McCarthy declared the matter closed.

“This matter has been satisfactorily finalised following the Ombudsman’s investigation and council will not be making further comment,” she said.

“We will continue to communicate directly with the affected residents on the matter as required.”

The couple had been in court disputes with the council for a decade on the matter of removing the sheds, but by the time of the demolition, had moved into a recentlycompleted house on their nearby property.

The extended deadline for Ms Gallagher and Mr Fewster to accept the debt reduction was 16 February, and was not accepted by the couple.

In brief Careless driving charges A KEILOR East man was lucky to escape serious injuries when his car rolled on the Black Spur earlier this month.

The 25-year-old man was travelling along the Maroondah Highway in Narbethong along the Black Spur at 3.30pm on Sunday 22 March, when he lost control of his car, causing it to roll.

Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson said both he and his passenger received minor injuries and were taken to Maroondah Hospital, but were lucky not to be seriously injured in the incident.

“They’re bloody lucky they’ve both come out relatively unscathed,” Sgt Coulson said.

The driver will be charged on summons for careless driving.

Teens run amok in bakery POLICE are appealing for information, with teenagers believed to have damaged a Yarra Glen bakery’s air- conditioning system.

at 10.30pm on Wednesday 4 March, two men aged between 16-18 caused $800 in damage to an air-conditioning system at the Yarra Flats Baking Company near the IGA supermarket.

Cannabis caution, penalty notices A LEARNER driver has got away with penalty notices and a caution after being caught driving an unregistered car, with fake plates, without a supervising driver and while in possession of marijuana.

The 18-year-old Lilydale man was caught with a small quantity of cannabis at Donnelly’s Weir in Healesville on 20 March at 11pm.

Yarra Glen Police Sergeant Richard Coulson said the driver was caught in an unregistered vehicle, with false plates fitted, and that he was also a learner driver travelling without a fully-licensed driver.

Sgt Coulson said the received a cannabis caution and penalty notices for the other offences.

Yarra Ranges Council’s director of Planning, Building and Health Andrew Paxton said in response to questions about the Ombudsman’s letter, that the couple had been provided with “every opportunity” to remove their valuables - “which they chose not to do.”

But this conflicts with Ms Gallagher and Mr Fewster’s statements about removing their belongings, and Mr Taylor’s statement that the council did not have authority to destroy property outside of the court order.

The Mail asked the council whether it had compared quotes for the demolition with multiple contractors, but received an unclear answer.

“Council follows a robust procurement process to ensure we engage appropriatelyqualified contractors,” Mr Paxton said in response.

“Cost is one of our considerations, as is the health and safety credentials to minimise risk to property owners and the public.”

Ryrie Ward councillor Fiona McAllister said that a reduction in the couple’s debt did not replace the items they say were destroyed, and that she did not agree with the decision.

THIS Sunday’s Rolling Green concert at Rochford Wines in Coldstream has been cancelled, after The Black Keys’ drummer received a serious shoulder injury.

The band announced that they would be unable to perform at any of their Rolling Green shows until 23 April, due to drummer Patrick Carney recovering from a dislocated and broken shoulder injury he received in January.

The band’s official statement said that, despite working with doctors, surgeons and physiotherapists for the last two months, Mr Carney’s recovery had taken longer than anticipated.

“Unfortunately Patrick is still unable to perform and needs additional time to heal,” the statement read.

“We thank all of our fans for their ongoing support and we look forward to getting back on the road as soon as possible.”

The band’s cancelled tour dates include the first Rolling Green events at Coldstream’s Rochford Wines on 5 April, which had Spiderbait, Band of Skulls and Bad//Dreems supporting.

The Black Keys’ Australian and New Zealand promoter, Love Police Touring’s Brian Taranto, said he was excited for the shows, but there was “no way around” cancelling.

“You just can’t have the Black Keys with no drums,” he said.

“We sincerely apologise for the hassle this cancellation will cause fans.”

Reminiscing Anzac battles ONE hundred years ago today, soldiers from the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps - Anzacs - were on Lemnos, a sun-bathed Greek island situated in the Aegean Sea. Many of these soldiers had not been outside of their home country before.

Almost all of them had never fought a battle.

Yet in three weeks’ time, they would sail 50km west across the sea and up the Dardanelles to a Turkish beachhead.

The plan was to land there, march along the coastline to the capital city of Constantinople, and swiftly force the surrender of the Ottoman Empire. That beach was called Gallipoli.

But an enduring legend had been born - that of the Anzac.

Locally, Warburton RSL is commemorating the service and sacrifice of the 151 local men who served in World War I by constructing a beautiful mural wall, featuring a mosaic poppy for each of the 47 soldiers who were killed in action.

Of course, World War I commenced in August 1914. A little known fact is that the first shot of the war was fired in Australia, from Point Nepean, at a passing German vessel.

In conjunction with Montrose Rotary, I unveiled a plaque last year in honour of Montrose resident Charles Morris, the artillery major who ordered

that infamous shot.

The war had a profound impact here at home as much as it did overseas.

The Bells of Peace project will tell the story of Anzac from a local perspective through song. Working with RSLs, schools, historical societies, and community groups, the Dandenong Ranger Music Council has composed a suite of musical scores for schools and choirs to perform at local commemoration services.

And last Sunday, I had the honour of helping launch the book Great Courage and Initiative - the heroic life of George Ingram VC MM. A Seville local, Ingram was awarded the Victoria Cross, our highest decoration for gallantry, in recognition for his bravery on

the Western Front in France.

These commemorative projects and more- have been made possible, thanks to the federally funded Casey Centenary of Anzac Committee, which has provided $125,000 worth of grants to RSLs, schools, Rotary clubs, and other groups to remember the service and sacrifice of Australia’s finest.

Anzac Day is always a special and solemn occasion. It will be especially so this year with the Centenary of Anzac.

If you are able to, I encourage you to attend a dawn service in your local town or follow coverage through the day to remember all Australians who have served, from World War I to those who serve today.

The New Association THE meeting of those wishing to forge Healesville ahead was held in the Memorial Hall on Monday night and elicited a moderate attendance.

An hour prior to the general meeting, members of the executive committee gathered. The open meeting was first faced with the problem of selecting a suitable name for the new organisation.

The amalgamated tourist and the advancement association should best meet the wishes of all.

After a good deal of discussion, it was ultimately agreed on the motion of Mr and Mrs W. E. Sharp that the title be a combined one that is the Healesville Tourist and Progress Association, by which name the tourist association was originally known.

Having settled this point satisfactorily, the meeting was faced with another problem - that of electing a secretary. This position was offered to and declined by nearly every member in the assembly until finally Mr F. J. Roberts consented to officiate.

Thieves hit charity

By JESSE GRAHAM POLICE are searching for a van stolen from a Lilydale charity earlier this month that was spotted driving through the Yarra Valley last week.

The van, a 2003 Toyota HiAce, was taken from Lilydale homelessness and poverty charity, Holy Fools, on Sunday 22 March, along with thousands of dollars in electronics and items from the group’s building.

An iMac computer, three printers, the building’s phone system, 10 backpack beds for homeless people, food, four slabs of soft drink and even the bin and the vacuum cleaner were taken from the Swansea Road church.

Lilydale Police Leading Senior Constable Scott Papeneux told the Mail that the van had been spotted in Healesville - once on Monday 23 March and twice the following day.

Unfortunately, once police officers had made it to the area, the van - which has distinct branding on the front, back and sides - had already gone.

The van had been used by Holy Fools to deliver food to the homeless, and contained blankets

at the time of its theft.

Holy Fools chief executive, Neal Taylor, said he was disappointed that the thieves didn’t simply approach the business if they were in need of food, shelter or assistance.

“Initially, I was quite upset and angry, but now I’ve just come to accept it,” he said.

“It was a pity that these guys didn’t make an effort to either come to us or ask us for food - we would have helped them out as much as we could.

“It’s a shame that they felt they had to rob us to satisfy their own needs, and it’s going to affect so many other people as well.”

Mr Taylor said that, luckily, the business had insurance that should cover most of the lost items, but that the theft was still a major inconvenience.

“At least it’s a minor trip, not a complete setback,” he said.

Yarra Ranges Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the incident and anyone with information is urged to call 9739 2300 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Anyone spotting the van is asked to call triple-zero immediately.

YARRA Ranges Council has mapped its environmental future with the release of its 10-year Environment Strategy last week, following over a year of consultations.

Councillors endorsed the Environment Strategy unanimously at their meeting on Tuesday 24 March, before launching the document officially the next morning at the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct Reserve.

The document outlines six general goals for the council in regards to its attitude to the environment: That iconic places and their natural character are actively protected; that water resources are improved and preserved; that native plants and animals are protected and that their habitat is enhanced; local economies are strengthened by environmentally sustainable activities; that communities are resilient in the face of changing climate and extreme events; and that all who live and work in the Yarra Ranges see themselves as stewards of the environment.

The council’s manager of Parks and Environment, David Harper, said the strategy was made as a result of extensive consultation both before and after the draft document was made.

Yarra Ranges mayor, Maria McCarthy, said that officers tried to engage all groups of people, through handing out pamphlets and links to online consultation pages at community markets and train stations.

Cr McCarthy said one of the keys to the consultation was breaking the strategy into key areas, such as fire, liveable communities and weeds and pests, and laying out issues in simple terms.

“It is a document that is easy to work with and ... a document that is in simple terms for the general public to understand our vision for what we want to

As part of the consultation, Yarra Ranges Council representatives met with farmers in the Yarra Valley in March 2014, who said they felt they weren’t represented by the council currently.

Issues raised by the farmers included needing permits to remove certain types of trees, which they said were unnecessary, as well as interacting with council and Yarra Valley Water on rivers and waterways on properties.

Mr Harper said the new strategy would inform council’s decisions regarding the environment, and that he hoped each group in the community felt their voice was represented.

“The meeting we had with Yarra Glen farmers in Hoogies was a very powerful

meeting,” Mr Harper said.

“I hope that they see a lot more of themselves in this strategy.

“I guess, really, what the strategy is doing is giving us directions for the future and setting a tone of how council wants to work in the future, and working with landholder groups, such as the graziers of the Yarra Valley, is one of the important things that we’re going to focus on in the next 10 years."

Small towns know how to support each other in tough times and recent tragedies attest to Yarra Glen’s special character.

Let’s please remember the people who pour their livelihood, skills or volunteer work into the local businesses and services for our benefit.

So why not browse the local shops, join a local sporting club, visit the library, and grab a course at the Living and Learning Centre?

You never know, you might find yourself more active, meeting new friends and part of a vibrant community.

Bushfire sign a must WARBURTON has been declared one of the most at-risk townships and areas for bushfires, yet the township does not have a Fire Danger Rating sign.

At a CFA organised public meeting last December, only a small fraction of those attending knew the current Fire Danger Rating for that particular day, even though there were nearby fires.

The Warburton Emergency Planning Group (WEPG) has been working with Yarra Ranges Shire, the CFA and others to help improve community awareness.

As part of that, we have proposed that a Fire Danger Rating sign be placed in Warburton.

However, despite formerly raising this request, the group has been told that there is no funding available this financial year unless we were to raise $70,000 ourselves.

We consider that such funding sits clearly with the Victorian Government and have written to the Emergency Services Minister seeking her support and have suggested a lower cost alternative, and have urged her to ensure a sign is in place before the next fire season.

While it may be the responsibility of all of us to be aware of current emergency information, it is also the responsibility for our governments to provide accessible means to that information.

Danger sign in community court

By KATH GANNAWAY THE Warburton Emergency Planning Group (WEPG) is calling on the State Government to provide Warburton with an electronic Fire Danger Rating Sign (FDRS) The group has been advised that the Warburton community will need to raise the $70,000 cost of the sign, if they want it before the next fire season.

The matter was raised at the Warburton Valley Bushfire Forum with WEPG spokesman Julian Guess making the point that with the Warburton Valley being identified as the most vulnerable bushfire area in the state, it should be a priority for a sign.

“We’re doing what we can to raise issues, and working on a number of initiatives to help create that additional awareness, but I was a little bit taken aback with the CFA’s response (to the group’s request for a FDRS) which was a suggestion that we should raise $70,000 ourselves.

“I don’t think it is a community responsibility,” he said.

“My immediate reaction was, I don’t think we’re going to do that.”

CFA Operations Officer Don Tomkins distanced himself from the official CFA response, saying there was a sign becoming available and he had earmarked it for Warburton.

He said however, he had been told it would go into a pool with Warburton among a number of places vying for the signs.

“We will continue to push for it, and based on this meeting , will be saying we want the sign here, but it’s not our decision,” he said.

He said the decision would lay with the Emergency Services In a letter to the Mail this week, Mr Guess made the point that at a fire awareness meeting in December, attended by over 100 people, only a small number of them knew the fire danger rating for that day, despite the fact that there had been fires in the area that day for which advisory notices had been issued.

He reiterated that the group has been told that there is no funding available this financial year unless they raised $70,000.

“We consider that such funding sits clearly with the Victorian Government and have written to the Emergency Services Minister (Ms Jane Garrett) seeking her support and have suggested a lower cost alternative,” Mr Guess wrote.

He said they had urged Ms Garrett to ensure a sign is in place before the next fire season.

Cash push for forest action

By KATH GANNAWAY A DONATION of $4000 will help raise the profile of a push in the Upper Yarra for the formation of the Great Forest National Park.

Warburton photographer Paul Colcheedas and his partner Sonia Jane made the donation from the proceeds of a pictorial calendar they produced for 2015.

Part of the proceeds will go to getting the establishment of a new environment group, War-

burton Forest Action, off the ground.

The aim of the group is to see the Great Forest National Park become a reality.

Karina Doughty, a joint facilitator of WFA with Keith Sera, said the group had formed as a follow up to a meeting last year on the GRNP. “About 200 people attended that meeting and this new group will give people a forum for their support for the Great Forest National Park,” Ms Doughty said.

“The aim is for the park to happen sooner rather than later.”

Ms Doughty said the success of the calendar showed the support for the park and the extent of support by the Warburton community.

“People are really energised and keen to take on different events to make the GRNP happen,” Ms Doughty said.

The group meets on the last Wednesday of each month at the Community Space in Warburton between 7pm and 8.30pm.

Mum, son sadly missed

By KATH GANNAWAY KELLY Crowley and her young son Ethan were farewelled last week as the Yarra Glen community continues to grapple with the loss of two beautiful souls.

More than 500 people attended the funeral at Lilydale on Friday, 20 March, of 34-year-old Kelly and nine-year old Ethan who died in a tragic car roll-over on the Goulburn Valley Highway at Molesworth on 9 March.

Kelly and Ethan died at the scene but Kelly’s two younger daughters, Sierra, 6, and Tahli, 2, survived and are at home.

Many speakers paid tribute to Kelly who was popular among family, friends and work colleagues.

Describing her as optimistic and bubbly, they said she would be keenly missed by those who were closest.

Little Ethan, they said, would be remembered as a witty, open and enthusiastic little boy who would be sadly missed by all who enjoyed being part of his life.

Siera and Tahli attended part of the funeral ceremonies and it was said they are recovering well from the accident.

At the Lilydale ceremony Ethan’s father, Brett Healey thanked the many local, interstate and overseas people who attended, along with students from Yarra Glen Primary School where Ethan was a student.

Father Bob Maguire spoke at the ceremony about the tragedy of losing two young people, saying: “They will always be with us”.

He said that the graveside ceremony was like a protest.

“These are young people and their deaths are against the natural order,” he said.

“We need to change the way we do things to make sure that such a tragedy doesn’t occur in the future.”

Kelly Crowley and son Ethan were remembered as fun-loving and caring.

WARBURTON Senior Citizens members were happily tired after a very successful lunch to raise funds to support local people affected by cancer.

More than 60 people attended the lunch on Monday 16 March, at the Warburton club rooms, where WSC members had prepared a delicious meal and organised raffles and an auction in support of cancer support group, Yarra Valley Ladies in Pink (YVLP).

WSC president Barbara Mutsaers said everyone involved was very happy to be able to hand over $2050 last week, as well as fulfilling their aim to raise awareness of a number of issues around cancer.

“We felt it was time to do something extra for the community outside of our senior citizens activities, and it was very satisfying,” she said.

Ms Mutsaers said among a number of highlights on the day was the inspirational talk by Judith McGrath from YVLP, and the overwhelming support from the business and wider community.

McCarthy and Eildon MP Cindy McLeish attended the lunch and praised the efforts of everyone involved.

Ms McLeish, in a Member’s Statement in Parliament, commended the organising team which she said had put in “a huge effort”.

“It was so amazing to see the level of support given by organisations and businesses within the community,” she said.

Cr McCarthy said it had been a phenomenal six months for the YVLP with local organisations reaching out to support their work and spreading the word about the good work they do.

“The best part about this is that it is local people raising funds for local people who are affected by cancer,” she said. “$2050 is a phenomenal amount.

“The amount of raffle prizes and auction items were incredible, and even from that perspective, where you have the local community so generously supporting them, it shows that everybody is touched by cancer, and want to help.

“It’s just great”.

Melba is ready to shine

By PETER DOUGLAS MELBA Support Services has held an upbeat grand opening to celebrate its relocation to Swinburne University’s former Lilydale campus.

Amid much fanfare last Thursday, about 250 guests descended on the new site to mark the occasion.

The entertainment included a performance from the Mount Evelyn Primary School choir, while guests included people with disabilities, their families, local businesses and supporters, and many community leaders.

Victorian Deputy Premier, James Merlino, headed a strong contingent of supporters.

These included Yarra Ranges Shire mayor, Cr Maria McCarthy; fellow

councillor Len Cox; and Melba Life Governor, Pauline Jones, OAM. In delivering his speech, Mr Merlino reiterated the Victorian Government’s commitment to Melba.

“The work that is done here, the difference you make, is crucial to a good society, a society in which everyone is valued,” he said.

“The care and respect you show here at Melba, the understanding of the inherent dignity of every human being, changes the lives of people who benefit from the support you provide.

“Melba plays such an important role in the community.”

Mr Merlino said he couldn’t wait until the facility was fully utilised.

“This new location ticks a lot of

boxes, it will be incredible when we fully load up this base with life, activity and education,” he said.

“Having Melba absolutely connected with students, teachers and community activity on this beautiful site will be amazing.”

Mr Merlino praised the board’s management in ensuring the relocation could happen.

Melba last February sold its former Mount Evelyn site, which had been deemed a high bushfire risk.

Named after Dame Nellie Melba, the organisation provides support services to about 300 people with physical and cognitive disabilities.

By JESSE GRAHAM THE YARRA Ranges has a new councillor for the Lyster Ward, with candidate Mike Clarke declared winner of the by-election yesterday.

An Independent candidate, Mr Clarke was declared winner on Monday 30 March, after receiving almost 2000 votes in preferences to push him into first place.

Greens-endorsed candidate, Kate Gutske, was ahead in the voting for much of the count, with Mr Clarke trailing about 200 votes behind as the early results were released.

Mr Clarke, a Selby resident, trailed Ms Gutske by just 11 votes, with 2797 against 2808, until the last-minute preferences came down.

After receiving 735 votes from Bill Brindle, Mr Clarke had a lead of 600 votes, which he then extended further when he received 1100 votes in preferences from Lawrence Mobsby.

The final vote count left Mr Clarke in the lead with 4632 votes to Ms Gutske’s 3117.

Mr Clarke told the Mail that he was delighted to get a win, having previously run for the Streeton Ward in 2012 and the Victorian State Election in November.

“To finally do it is exciting, and I’m really honoured to get all of that support from the voters,” he said.

“I’m really impressed that they all got behind me, and I look forward to supporting and representing them.”

He said that he enjoyed

“We are thrilled to be providing support services from this site,” he said.

“It is a perfect location and a great building, accessible for people who use wheelchairs and with sufficient space to expand our capacity and meet local needs.”

Don’t compromise on quality to save

“The people who turned up had really good questions and you could see the array of answers,” he said.

During his campaign, Mr Clarke told the Mail that the big issue in the ward - which covers Sherbrooke, Kallista, The Patch, Belgrave, Selby, Menzies Creek, Lysterfield and Belgrave Heights - was public transport.

He proposed a 10-seater

bus replacement to the current 40-seater Ventura buses, with more frequent trips to towns through the Dandenongs.

Fast forward to after the election and Mr Clarke said people in the hills agreed that public transport was an important issue and that he would take that issue, along with housing affordability, to the council when he began his duties as councillor.

Mr Clarke will officially be sworn in at a special Yarra Ranges Council meeting on 7 April, and will sit as Lyster Ward councillor until the general council election in October 2016.

SES on barista duty

By KATH GANNAWAY SES volunteers from Healesville and Lilydale will be on barista duty on Easter Monday as part of the Easter Driver Reviver program.

The program which started in 1984 as “Operation Coffee Break” has become an important part of the safety message delivered to drivers around Victoria, particularly on long weekends when fatigue is seen as a significant factor in causing injury and loss of life on the state’s roads.

SESVIC says the busiest times for volunteers at Driver Reviver sites is at the Easter break. Sites at Dom Dom Saddle on the Maroondah Highway between Narbethong and Healesville, and in the drive-through on the highway near Ingrams Road at Coldstream, are strategically positioned to capture drivers returning home after a long, and often, tiring long weekend.

The Driver Reviver sites are now not just a place for drivers to stop and

rest but a source of information on local attractions and road conditions.

They’re also a safe place to take a break for people travelling alone.

While it’s the local SES volunteers who will be keeping our roads safe, their colleagues will be offering the same potentially life-saving cuppa to drivers from around the Yarra Valley and the Dandenongs as they make their home from Easter get-aways all around the state.

The program has one aim, to reduce road collisions by alleviating driver fatigue - a significant contributor to vehicle collisions in the state.

Each year, thousands of cups of tea and coffee are served ... each one aiming to increase the chances of every road traveller reaching their destination safely.

It is critical before leaving on long trips to be well rested.

Passengers should also be well rested; there are few things more distracting for a driver than whingeing, grumpy passengers.

Plan trips so that you will stop at least every two hours.

Fifteen minutes is a good break.

Get out of the car, breathe fresh air, have some light refreshments, walk around, do something interesting.

If you have kids make sure you have interesting things for them to do; write down ideas for games before you leave.

Research the areas you will be driving through and develop a quiz.

Pack a picnic basket and thermos. Don’t drink alcohol.

Federal Anchor for homeless

By JESSE GRAHAM A YARRA Ranges homelessness support organisation has been thrown a lifeline by the Federal Government, which recently announced it would restore lost funding for the next two years.

On 26 March, the Yarra Ranges Council announced that homelessnesssupport agencies would have their funding renewed by the Federal Government under the National Partnership Agreement on Homelessness.

The funding had only been committed yearly by the government, and this year’s funds were set to run out on 30 June, before the government announced $230 million over the coming two years.

Social Services Minister Scott Morrison said the government would continue its funding agreement with the states until 2017.

Anchor, which provides services for families, young people and the homeless, will receive some of this funding for three of their programs, two of which could have been under the knife if the funding was not renewed.

Housing and Support manager Lisa Stockheim said that if the funding had not been announced, the organisation would have had to reduce or stop their support as soon as April.

“For us, it was a huge concern, because we would need to slow down our client intake or cease it, and we had staff that obviously needed to ask the question if they had a job here in the future,” Ms Stockheim said.

“It was quite stressful.”

She said the organisation was still awaiting the details of the funding and what it covered, but that staff were relieved that their work could continue.

“At this stage, we’re just breathing a collective sigh of relief and thinking ‘thank goodness’,” she said.

“We’re going to have our fingers crossed that it just covers everything.

“It was a close call, and we’re very happy for it, because it means we can provide the quality service we provide for our community.”

Anchor run three programs - Opening Doors, Accommodation Options for Families and A Place to Call Home - that focus on housing and support for people in the community affected by domestic violence or at risk of homelessness or exploitation from rooming houses.

The programs are run from the organisation’s Lilydale and Wantirna offices, and service residents throughout the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.

Yarra Ranges Council estimates that 337 people in the municipality are homeless, including women and children fleeing domestic violence and young people unable to stay with their families.

“This advocacy win for the community now means local agencies, including Anchor, will be able to continue to provide important services to those in need,” a council spokesperson wrote in a statement.

Burgan motion shot down

A PROPOSAL to scrap the permit required to remove burgan in the Yarra Ranges was shot down at council last week.

The issue was raised as an ‘urgent motion’ by Councillor Jim Child, who labelled the plant an “extreme fire risk.”

“What concerns residents is that on farming properties you can have ember attack into the head of the burgan thickets which will actually ignite the bush behind the thickets, and then we have a real serious fire situation,” Cr Child said.

“I believe it is urgent. We have a situation where, like our neighbours in Nillumbik Shire, (we need to) actually recognise that fire danger exists with these particular thickets of burgan.”

Cr Child’s plan was strongly opposed by other members however, who criticised the use of an urgent motion regarding an amendment to the planning scheme.

Councillor Terry Avery said that the permit should not be removed without community consultation.

“We need to speak to people about this

issue. Let’s go back to our community and consult with them.”

Councillor Len Cox agreed.

“It bothers me that we’re doing something because Nillumbik thought it was a good idea,” he told the council.

“Why employ people who are experts and then ignore them?

“There isn’t any urgency in this motion.”

Nillumbik Shire Council introduced a strategy to manage burgan for ‘fire protection,’ which allows residents to remove the species.

Nillumbik’s plan also states that “any shrubby fuels like burgan near houses increase the risk of damage to homes during bushfires due to the proximity of flames to the house and radiant heat.”

One of the three sitting members who supported the motion was Councillor Andrew Witlox, stating that residents should be given the same rights as council.

“If council doesn’t need a permit to remove them, then why should residents?”

The issue may be again raised on a later agenda.

Artworks do the talking

By KATH GANNAWAY HETTI Perkins cast an appreciative eye over the works of John Mawurndjul and the late Galumbu Yunupingu as the final work was hung at Tarrawarra Museum of Art last week.

The 26 works, 13 each, by the pair regarded as two of the most outstanding Indigenous artists of our time, feature in the Earth and Sky exhibition which opened on Sunday.

As curator, Ms Perkins says it’s an exhibition that is very much about the work.

TWMA at Healesville, she said, was the ideal gallery for works that don’t need enhancements.

“This gallery is so vast and very simple,” she said looking down the walls lined on other side with the, as yet, unlit works

of Mawurndjul and Yunupingu.

“I wanted this exhibition to be just about the work; not many tricks, just white walls, bare floor, allowing the works to speak,“ she said.

“It feels immersive.

“I really wanted a simple, organic show that would do justice to these individual artists.”

The title of the exhibition refers to the respective subjects of the two artists’ practice.

The paintings of Kuninjku artist Mawurndjul embody the earthly, the terrestrial, and the ancestral realm. His ‘abstract’ bark paintings represent body painting for the sacred Mardayin ceremonies and relate to the landscape and significant sites within his homeland in western Arnhem Land.

Initially inspired by her traditional Gumatj stories of the

Pleiades and other constellations, the late Gulumbu Yunupingu painted Garak (the universe) and its stars and galaxies, interpreting these ancestral concepts within the realms of her own imagination.

Ms Perkins said in bringing the work of the two artists together, the exhibition offers a panoptic view of ‘country’ from an Indigenous perspective.

“Both artists engage with and represent the natural world in a highly sophisticated and conceptual aesthetic form,” she said.

“Their work distils the spiritual nature of this engagement in work that resonates with a power that is both ceremonial and celebratory.”

The exhibition is on show until 8 June.

Loss and compassion

By KATH GANNAWAY MARY Bariola hid photos of her son’s car crash for years.

One is graphic.

It’s not a photo she dwells on, but it still haunts her.

“That image never goes from your memory,” she said last week as Easter, one of the deadliest periods on the roads, comes up.

It’s 16 years on 11 May since 34-year-old Mark died in a car crash on St Hubert’s Road, in Coldstream.

It changed her and husband Renato’s lives.

It changed the lives of Mark’s partner and their unborn daughter.

It changed the lives of Mark’s three brothers.

But, out of Mary’s grief, it has also changed the lives of numerous other parents who have lost a child, either on the roads, or through other circumstances.

Mary became involved with the support group Compassionate Friends Victoria as she sought to deal with the grief ... that the pain in her voice, even now, says is still very much a part of her life.

Mary said she struggled to cope with overwhelming grief after Mark died, but found it helpful to talk about her pain.

“It is important to know that the way you are feeling is the right way to feel, if you feel like you need to talk about it, talk.

“If you need to cry, cry,” she said.

Mary is now in her eighth year of running a social luncheon group, Yarra Valley Compassionate Friends, a support group for bereaved parents and siblings.

Mary knows that there will be other families over Easter, perhaps some who live in her own part of the world, perhaps some whose family member or friend has died on Yarra Ranges roads, who will get the knock on the door that will change their lives forever.

For Mary and Mark’s partner Janet, news of his death didn’t come from that dreaded door-stop delivery, but at the scene of the crash.

When Mary speaks of the events leading up to that kick-in-the-guts moment, there’s a particular sadness as she says Mark had begun a happy pe1174495-PB14-15

riod in his life as he focused on settling down and starting a family.

She said she knew something had gone wrong on the afternoon of the accident because Mark was due home from work and he was always on time.

When Janet called Mary an hour after he should have been home and told her he still wasn’t home, they began calling hospitals.

They could not get any information until Janet called triple-zero and began explaining to the operator the route that Mark took to get home.

When she mentioned that he would drive down St Hubert’s Road to get back to Healesville, the operator went silent on the other end of the line.

It was late when Mary and Janet decided to trace Mark’s route and they soon saw a car door and pack rack being cleared away by a tow-truck driver.

“We found his car door on the side of the road, but nothing else,” she said.

“I ran up to the driver, asking him where my son was.”

The police hadn’t contacted the family yet, but when Mary called from the tow-trucks’ phone, “they told us to stay put, they would come to us”.

When police arrived at the scene they told the women what had happened.

They explained how Mark had tried to pass the truck in front of him but lost control on the newly-laid gravel and his car hit a tree.

Before he died, Mark told the people who came to his aid that he could hear the ambulance coming.

Mary said she cannot forget the trauma of that night, and in an ideal world, no-one would have to suffer that shock, and the enduring loss.

“You work your life around the grief, but your life changes when you lose a child and it’s never the same,” she said.

“It’s a part of you that’s gone.”

“At least I am lucky enough that Mark left something of himself behind,” she said, adding that she has a lovely relationship with her granddaughter Grace, and with Janet.

“Grace is 15 now, 16 in September and she looks just like Mark; she is gorgeous,” she says, her voice lifting for the first time in the conversation.

Mary says Compassionate Friends gave her an outlet for her grief and that

“Just listening to them can help,” she says.

The Yarra Valley group meets on the third Thursday of each month and is for anyone who has lost a child.

It’s a group Mary says she wishes would never gain another member.

“I don’t want new members ... I don’t want any more children to die,” she says.

“But, we know that’s not reality, and if by sharing a lunch, talking and listening, we can help each other get on with

life, that’s what we’ll do,” she said.

Mary’s plea for parents, sons, daughters ... everyone who will be travelling on the roads over Easter, is to take care.

“I would just say to them, think of their own lives, and how precious they, and others on the roads, are to the people in their lives.

“Drive carefully; don’t be in a hurry.”

“Mark might have been late home that day.

“We wish he had been late ... just late.”

By KATH GANNAWAY THE laws around mobile phone use, talking and texting while driving, are clear. It’s illegal.

The stakes were raised just over a year ago for both probationary drivers, who are over-represented in serious road crashes according to VicRoads, and for more experienced drivers.

It became illegal for P2 drivers, as well as P1 and learner drivers to use a mobile phone, either hand-held or hands-free, while driving. That included when the car was stationary, but not parked.

Mobile phones and other mobile devices, such as DVD players or tablet computers, are major sources of distraction for this age group - especially while drivers are still building experience and developing skills.

There’s a lot at stake for these drivers, with probationary drivers who reach five demerit points in danger of having their licence suspended.

The changes were not restricted to probationary drivers, however. All drivers now face tougher penalties for illegal use of a mobile phone or interacting with other units that have visual displays while driving that are not driver’s aids.

The problem is distraction, and using a mobile phone while driving can be distracting. Research shows that using a hand-held or hands-free mobile phone while driving that may involve manual or visual distraction increases the chances of being involved in a crash or near-crash.

Using a hand-held mobile while driving includes not only talking and texting, but playing games, taking photos or videos or using any other function on the phone.

While using a mobile is second nature to a whole generation of young drivers, and some older drivers, research shows that it can lead to riskier decision making, slower reactions, slower and less controlled braking, wandering out across lanes and generally not being alert to surroundings.

It’s different to a situation where you are actually talking to a passenger.

If a dangerous situation develops, the passenger can stop talking and let the driver concentrate on driving. On a mobile phone, the person on the other end of the line isn’t aware of the danger and will keep talking, creating a further

Contribute your skills and help to protect and enhance Victoria’s natural resources

CMAs prepare regional catchment strategies and coordinate and monitor their implementation. They also advise the minister on priorities for resource allocation and on the condition of land and water resources; and promote community awareness and understanding of the importance of land and water resources, their sustainable use, conservation and rehabilitation. Each CMA (except the Port Phillip and Westernport CMA) also has regional waterway, loodplain, drainage and environmental water reserve management responsibilities.

Contribute your skills and help to protect and enhance Victoria’s natural resources The Minister for Environment, Climate Change and Water is seeking expressions of interest for appointment of the Chair and members to the Victorian Catchment Management Council (VCMC).

Do you have experience and knowledge in land protection, water resource management, primary industry, environment protection and conservation, or local government? Experience and knowledge in public administration and governance or in community engagement are also desirable. The composition of the VCMC will also relect the major land and water uses in Victoria, including rural, urban, private and public uses.

The Victorian Government is committed to ensuring the diversity of our boards represent the diversity of our communities. Women, Indigenous persons, people with a disability, young persons and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

The VCMC consists of up to 10 members, including the Chair, appointed for up to three years. One member is nominated by the Secretary of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. The terms of appointment of the current VCMC Chair and members expire on 25 September 2015.

The VCMC is responsible for advising the Victorian Government on the condition of land and water resources and on priorities for catchment management. The VCMC also encourages the co-operation of people and bodies involved in the management of land and water resources.

The VCMC is independent of catchment management authorities.

Appointees may be entitled to remuneration for their services at rates according to the Victorian Government’s Appointment and Remuneration Guidelines. Travelling and other allowances may also be reimbursed at applicable government rates.

Yet another Monkhorst off to ’Pies

WOORI Yallock's favourite son Ben Monkhorst will pull on the black and white stripes this year for Collingwood’s VFL side.

After booting 41 goals last season for the Tigers, Monkhorst, 23, has signed with the AFL team’s Reserves, with the team aiming for its third consecutive finals series.

Monkhorst has previously played at state level, with Box Hill, and will be a welcome ad-

dition to the Magpies.

VFL coach Dale Tapping told the club’s website last week he was excited over what Monkhorst would bring.

“He’s probably that second or third option in the forward half,” Tapping said.

“He’s got really good aerial power and he kicks the ball really well.

“At 23 years old, he gives our group a little bit of experience. He’s had a good pre-season.”

Monkhorst is the son of Magpies 1990 premiership ruckman, Damian Monkhorst, who has also represented Woori Yallock with distinction.

Ben’s presence will add to the Magpie family connections on the VFL list this year.

He will join Ned McKeown (son of Ron), as well as Ryan Pendlebury (brother of Magpie skipper, Scott) and Jack Blair (brother of Jarryd) as confirmed starters for the Reserves’ list.

Veida, Kiara do us proud YARRA Ranges Athletics club members competed in a range of championship events this weekend including the Australian Open Track and Field Championships and the State Little Athletics Championships.

Veida Somerville became Yarra Ranges Athletics first ever representative at the Australian Open Track and Field Championships, representing the club in the 3000m steeplechase.

Veida smashed her PB to finish in an outstanding fifth place in her debut season of steeplechase.

The Little Athletics members were representing our club with equal amount of vigour at the State Little Athletics Championships.

Star of the meet was undoubtedly Kiara Flavel with three gold medals and two pending Victorian Best Performances. An excellent result for the dedication Kiara has shown to

her athletics this summer.

Other medal winners from the championships were Lateisha Willis, Chelsea Thompson, Georgia Laven, Madeline Laven, Tayleb Willis, Benjamin Grimes, Ruby Dixon, Claire Noonan, Emily Noonan, Brayden Woolridge, Tyler Weeks and Bailey Griffiths.

Next club event is the start of the crosscountry season on 11 April with the club AGM and Little Athletics presentation night that evening.

The annual ‘Lake but not as you know it Fun Run’ will be held on Sunday 19 April.

Smashing end to season

By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE Tennis Club has had a successful summer season playing in three premierships and coming home with two flags.

In the Junior Open Singles/Doubles, Section 7, of the Eastern Region Tennis, Healesville defeated Monbulk six sets, 43 games to 2 sets, 34 games.

The team was captain Dean Pryon, April Stanley, Maddy Hannaford and James Laurence.

tion 6, Captain, Lucy Flamsteed, Caitlyn Cosson and Kelly Wallace defeated Koonung Park in a very close match which saw Healesville claim the flag 3 sets, 30 games to 3 sets, 26 games.

The Eastern Region Junior Development Section 3 match saw Healesville come runners-up to Heathmont with Eliza Hoiles, Ruby Holloway, Joanne Lawrence, May Flamsteed and Phoebe Cosson putting in a great effort after a very successful season.
