“The main thing when designing was to look back at the last display home and think how could I improve to make the next one better

and more appealing.

“This has more in less space, but the rooms are the same size- I’ve just cut down on wasted space.”

The house also works well on difficult blocks of land, or those with a slope, ensuring no precious square metre goes to waste.

The design can even incorporate simple and subtle steps throughout the home to work with blocks on an inclination.

Criminal figures keep police busy

High and dry

THEFT continues to remain one of Wodonga’s most problematic crimes, according to the latest figures from Victoria Police.

Results released by the Crime Statistics Agency on Thursday for the year ending 31 December shows the Wodonga local government area had 700 incidences of theft throughout the year, averaging about two incidents a day.

Court order breaches were the next common recorded crime in the city for the year at 466 counts while incidences of property damage sat at 427.

Assault is also proving to be a major issue in Wodonga, with police reporting to 413 cases.

These figures come as the city experienced a jump in its crime rate by more than 17 per cent in 2014.

The figures show a total of 3250 offences were recorded in Wodonga local government area between January to December 2014, compared to 2774 in the previous 12 month period.

Drug issues on the Border also cropped up in the figures, with 34 separate cases of drug dealing and trafficking reported by police, on top of 10 counts of manufacturing and 115 for drug use and possession.

In shocking figures, Wodonga’s neighbouring Victorian city Wangaratta saw 738 counts of drug dealing and trafficking, highlighting the growing ice problem in regional Victoria.

Family incidences also kept Wodonga police busy as they attended to 781 incidents throughout 2014.

This is the highest number of family incidents recorded by police in the local government area since 2010, and is more than double the figure of four years earlier.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE MEMBERS of Albury’s Fish Out of Water committee say Albury City Council has failed to consider the broad range of pool users on the Border after it voted against extending the Albury Swim Centre season.

The decision was passed unanimously by councillors at Monday night’s meeting after they decided that additional operating costs would be prohibitive.

The decision was met with disappointment by Fish Out of Water members who said a year-round pool or extended season would provide extraordinary benefits for the Border community. “We don’t believe the issues have been looked at properly,� Fish Out of Water member Don Taylor said. “We are a small group representing a broad range of groups and users of the pool across the area.�

Fish Out of Water members told Albury Wodonga News Weekly after Monday’s meeting that they felt the council only took into consideration lap and elite swimmers, rather than sporting groups.

They said additional competitions could be held on the Border if the pool was brought up to international FINA standards.

This would include catering to divers, triathletes and year-round water polo competitions.

Monday night’s report outlined three options for an extended season trial, including opening for an additional four to six weeks with reduced operating hours.

Mayor Kevin Mack said even the cheapest option equates to an additional $59,000 in operating costs and wasn’t viable.

Sophie, Jamie and Isabelle Lawrence enjoy the tail end of the pool season. 136667 Picture: ADAM WILSON “This is based on a scenario of 150 visits per day with the pool opening for an extra four weeks for 19 hours per week. “We would, in essence, be subsidising each swimmer to the tune of $17.10 per visit compared with $2.90 during the regular season. “While we appreciate the importance of swimming to local athletes and those wanting to keep fit, we simply can’t justify the additional costs, which are not included in the 14/15 budget.�

“When compared to other standalone regional outdoor pools, the Albury Swim Centre season is already one of the longest, extending from mid-September to mid-April.�

The council is encouraging those pushing for extra opening hours to use the existing local indoor aquatic facilities during the off-season.

However Fish Out of Water said the city’s two private 25-metre indoor facilitates are inadequate to support the Border’s volume of pool users.

Members of the group say the

indoor facilities can become overheated and very crowded in the winter months, with many sporting groups using them for training.

Fish Out of Water member TerryAnne Scott said it was also important that children in the area were able swim regularly for health and safety reasons. “Kids need to be swimming year round,� she said. “We are surrounded by water, and have the river and the weir, and it’s important our kids have strong skills.�

Council’s waste and recycling contractor, Transpacific Cleanaway, is providing the service under the Halve Waste banner in partnership with AlburyCity and Corowa Shire councils.

A Halve Waste ‘Green Team’ of education officers has already been meeting with residents, including mothers’ groups who may need assistance, advice or alternative options to the default three-bin system.

Residents are advised to visit www.halvewaste.com.au for detailed fact sheets, tips and frequently asked questions so that this major change causes minimal disruption to household routines.

The new three-bin service allows food and garden waste to be collected and recycled, in addition to the regular waste and recycling collections.

The new system will begin in Albury and Corowa on 13 April with the following collection regime:

KERR Road is a step closer to being upgraded after AlburyCity awarded a $1.9 million contract to Border-based construction company, Excell Gray Bruni for reconstruction of the road in Thurgoona.

The company was one of five that tendered for the two-stage project, with council basing its decision on cost, experience, resources and management systems.

Council moved the decision to award the contract at Monday night’s regular meeting.

Albury Mayor Kevin Mack says Kerr Road provides important access to the Thurgoona Wirlinga growth corridor which is expected to be home to an additional 50,000 residents over the next 50 years.

“This road is in poor condition and a reconstruction is necessary to not only meet current demands, but also the future needs of a growing community,” Cr Mack said.

Stage one of the works will involve re-aligning the Kerr Road/Riverina Highway intersection to comply with NSW Roads and Maritime Services requirements for highway intersections.

It will include relocating services, installing new kerb and gutter, a new guardrail and resealing Kerr Road as well as localised widening the Riverina Highway at the intersection, with provision for a new turning lane into Kerr Road.

Stage two will involve reconstructing Knoble Road towards Thurgoona Drive.

Work is scheduled to commence in April and take around four months to complete.

The Halve Waste initiative is part of a united roll-out across the region, with the City of Wodonga and Indigo Shire Council also set to introduce an organics collection service later in the year.

Labor pledge for women’s centre LABOR candidate for Albury Ross Jackson has announced that a Foley Labor Government would guarantee funding for the Women’s Centre Albury-Wodonga for the next five years.

Under the pre-election promise, women’s health centres across New South Wales would receive a $50 million package delivered over five

years. It would include annual funding to the state’s 21 women’s centres, and an annual $1 million financial boost to expand counselling and support services for women who have been victims of domestic abuse.

“Women’s Centre Albury-Wodonga is an outstanding service which provides a range of health for local women,” Mr Jackson said.

“Over the past year, the Liberals’ changes to funding for specialist homelessness services forced the closure of many women’s refuges across NSW. “I’m pleased to announce today that Labor will end this uncertainty by guaranteeing funding for the Women’s Centre Albury-Wodonga funding for the next five years.”

A NEW waste collection system will roll out across Albury next month.

The city will adopt a three-bin system from 13 April which will introduce green lid bins to all Albury households to prevent organic food and garden waste going to landfill.

Under the new three-bin service the general red-lidded rubbish bin will be emptied fortnightly instead of weekly. It’s estimated about half of household waste that would usually go into the red-lidded bin, will be composted through the green-lidded organics bin.

The landmark Halve Waste initiative begin rolling out from Monday.

Albury Mayor Kevin Mack said council was recognising that organic material in landfill was one of the biggest causes of greenhouse gas emissions.

“It means Albury residents will now have a three-bin household waste collection service that benefits the local environment, creates valuable compost and reduces carbon emissions,” Cr Mack said.

“From 30 March, residents will receive their new green-lidded organics bin and an information kit.

By ERIN SOMERVILLE ALBURY’S half-day public holiday for the city’s Gold Cup is shaping up as a day not to be missed.

The racecourse has been a hive of activity this week as organisers prepare for an expected crowd of up to 16,000 people to head trackside on Friday.

With 48 private marquees already booked, and crowds expected to fill up The Birdcage and Cup Carnival enclosure, the half-day public holiday is al-

ready looking likely to pay off.

Albury Racing Club’s Hospitality and Events Executive Amy Collins said the day was sure to provide something for everyone.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re into racing,” she said.

“There is something for those who are into fashion, or whether it’s catching up with friends.

“It’s that one half-day a year you have the chance to meet up with people

in this environment, and it’s a fun place to be.”

The weather forecast is looking promising, and the field is looking strong as well, including entries from Sydney and Melbourne, with nominations closing yesterday.

Organisers are also excited to welcome Myer pin-up boy Kris Smith, who will be judging Fashions on the Field.

Van of smiles could go national Carevan Sun Smiles uses education with the help of dental and health students and a friendly team of puppets to teach children about the importance of good oral hygiene and nutrition, as well as providing them with dental kits.

Children’s teeth are then treated with a fluoride varnish that helps prevent decay by up to 40 per cent, and works for up to six months at a time.

Following Carevan Sun Smiles’ success on the Border, the program has been embraced by the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, and the Federal Member for Reid Craig Laundy.

Universities have also shown interest.

With the program now in its third year, Dr Brabant is hopeful Federal Minister for Health and local Member for Farrer Sussan Ley will pick up the project and run it nationally.

“Hopefully it will become a federal funded program,” he said.

The Sun Smile program, which has been co-created by Albury dentist Dr John Brabant, is partnered with Carevan and focuses primarily on prevention and promoting good oral hygiene.

Dr Brabant first launched the program at West Wodonga Primary School in 2012, and has since rolled it out across Border schools and into Sydney schools, benefiting over 2000 young smiles. “(Dental hygienist) Cathryn Carboon and I discussed the need to encourage oral health in disadvantaged children,” Dr Brabant said.

“We aim to create a new generation of kids without all these problems that make it harder to break out of the poverty cycle.

“For a lot of kids, toothbrushes are at the bottom of the shopping list.”

UP TO $4 million is expected to be injected into the Border economy this week as the massive Ulysses Motorcycle Club AGM revs up in the region.

Since the weekend, motorcycle riders have begun their journey into Wodonga to make the city’s showgrounds their home for the week-long event.

Already, 1000 campers have set up at the showgrounds, while another 1000 are registered to make their way there.

Business is booming in the city, with a full minibus making a trip from the Ulysses AGM venue to the Wodonga shops every 20 minutes for supplies.

With riders coming from as far as Canada, USA, Europe, and New Zealand, organisers are excited to finally be able to show off their picturesque corner of the world.

“It’s just a fantastic party atmosphere,” Ulysses Club Incorporated AGM Event 2015 Wodonga director Blue Knowles said.

“It’s a full week of socialising and taking in the wonderful country scenery.”

The event has been under preparation for the past three years, after Wodonga won the bid to hold the popular event.

The entire region is expected to benefit, with cyclists encouraged to explore local routes that pass through the Border’s scenery, towns, and villages.

We’re seeing long-awaited projects finally coming to life, such as the new $4 million Albury Ambulance Station, the $11 million to upgrade the difficult last section of the Riverina Highway (no other government would touch this!), the $3 million Brain Health Centre, and the $63 million we have budgeted to rebuild and renovate three of our regional hospitals in this electorate (the largest state project here in over 20 years).

Leasing poles and wires will push $20 billion through the state economy - $6 billion of which is allocated to regional development. Times are hard and we are targeting job creation, reducing taxes and burdens on small business, and bringing down electricity prices.

Our money is on the table and our promises are real and funded.

Stand up for Australia BORDER citizens took the opportunity on Sunday to raise issues affecting the area at the March Australia rally at QEII Square.

Domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse, metadata retention, education reforms, electricity privatisation, and healthcare were all on the agenda for the crowd of around 50.

Organiser Alan Lappin said the rally provided a vital opportunity for the community to come along and listen to guest speakers.

“Major social problems in everyday communities and families will not be fixed unless everyone is prepared to take responsibility and help,” he said.

“Average Australians must stand up to protect their democratic rights; protect our way of life including Medicare and a right to equal opportunity in education for all children and adults.

“Fighting for equality and affordable education and free access to health services is something all members of our society should demand.”

Albury was one of 27 locations across Australia where a March Australia rally took place.

The March Australia movement says the weekend rally was a huge success, after 40,000 people nationwide took part.

“It’s an incredible result,“ said March Australia spokesperson Loz Lawrey.

“We’re delighted that so many chose to join us and give this government the feedback they deserve."

March Australia, previously known as March in March, began 12 months ago as a series of national protests across numerous locations in the nation.

It remains unassociated with any political party or organisation.

Schoolies with a purpose

School leavers on the Border are finding more rewarding ways to celebrate finishing their high school education with a rewarding volunteering program in Cambodia.

The Border Alternative Schoolies program has only been in action since 2013, but already local high school leavers are finding the program rewarding, exciting, and challenging as they look to more meaningful ways to spend the ‘Schoolies’ break.

The idea began back in 2012, when The Rotary Club of Belvoir Wodonga became aware of another Rotarian program being run in Cambodia for school leavers.

After Belvoir Wodonga Rotarian Cameron Roberts took one student with him to try out the experience in 2013, the opportunities and experiences were too good for other local students to miss, and the Border organisation now runs its own program.

Last year, 11 students from six different schools explored the exotic and exciting cities of Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, all while helping make life a little better for Cambodians in need.

At Siem Reap, the schoolies traded the typical alcoholic beverages for tools and helped construct a playground for disabled children at the Grace House Community Centre - a non-religious, non-political registered Cambodian non-government organisation.

Mr Roberts said the experience was one the schoolies would remember for years to come.

“Alternative Schoolies has more of a respectable air to it and is more rewarding, and helps communities,” he said.

“Some have said it was the best ex-

“In five to 10 years’ time they’ll still be remembering this fondly.”

The trip is open to those who have just completed Year 12 and are looking to take a meaningful schoolies excursion for the right reasons.

It lasts for two weeks, and includes a trip to Phnom Penh to better understand the dark and tragic past of the country, and to gain a better understanding of its culture, before heading to Siem Reap to explore and carry out charity work.

Mr Roberts said those looking to develop new skills, see more of the world, and build new friendships would benefit from the trip.

Preparation is already underway for the 2015 trip, which will be held from 22 November to 7 December.

Venue is premier MELROSE Football Club is taking another step towards being a premier sporting destination for families, with barrier fencing now installed behind the goals.

The fencing will prevent young children from leaving the grounds to chase balls into unsupervised and less safe areas.

A total of $16,622 was put towards the project by NSW Sport and Recreation, $10,200 from AlburyCity Council, and $6400 from Melrose

Football Club. In addition, ground lighting has also been installed with AlburyCity contributing $82,000 and in kind labour and cash from the Melrose Football Club.

The changerooms of the Lavington clubrooms have also been repaired after an arson attack left them unusable in October.

The upgrades are just the icing on the cake for the club, which is looking to field every side in the competition for the first time.

The parcel of land informally known as urban square that fronts Elgin Boulevard and High Street is part of council’s Junction Place project in partnership with Places Victoria.

After a vote to name the future gathering place failed to go ahead at Wodonga Council early this month due to lack of community input, residents are now invited to submit a suggestion online or via a hard copy submission form which can be picked up at our venues, community centres and council’s Hovell Street offices.

As well, the public can stop by one of the “Seats on the

Street� sessions at various sites around the city where they can write their suggestions.

Cr Eric Kerr said it was apparent residents were keen to have a say and this was their chance to do so. “We are building a city heart and it is important that our community feels ownership in this process,� he said. “It’s important that the name chosen is something they support and works well for them.�

Cr Michael Fraser said the site was a significant piece of land in the revitalised CBA and as such needed a name befitting that status. “It’s important that the name for the square reflect the prominence the site has in our city and will continue to have for years to come,� he said. “It’s important to note, too,

that the names that have already been shortlisted will still be in the mix for consideration.�

AT THE Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints, family plays an important role in helping lead a fulfilling life by nurturing the divine relationships within it.

Families on the Border enjoy the support and teachings of the church, which includes and welcomes family members of all ages to enjoy and celebrate Jesus Christ’s messages.

Latter-day Saints are Christians who follow the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Book of Mormon to find lasting peace, happiness, and inspired life direction.

Sundays are a very special and enjoyable day at Albury’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Sacrament meeting, the main worship service, commences at 10am, before members continue their work and worship later into the day.

Latter-day Saints around the world celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.

The public is invited to attend the Easter Sunday Worship Service.

As part of regular Sunday services, women spend time contributing to the Relief Society, and with six million members world-wide, it is known as one of the largest and oldest women’s organisations in the world, and aims to relieve the burdens of those in need.

Males of the church meanwhile attend priesthood meetings, where every worthy male has the opportunity to hold the priesthood.

But Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints is something even the children can enjoy, and are able to enjoy age appropriate Sunday School services where they can learn valuable life lessons and outlooks, and meet like-minded children.

FOR generations, residents on the Border have spent some of their most special and difficult moments at the local churches of the Anglican Parish of Northern Albury.

With St Mark’s in North Albury, St James’s in Lavington, St John’s in Thurgoona, and St Paul’s in Jindera, you are never too far from the friendly guidance and enlightenment of the Anglican Parish team on the Border.

Rector Reverend Peter McKeague, Deacon Reverend Christine Page, assisted

by Trinity Anglican College Chaplain, Reverend Lee Weissel, provide numerous and diverse services throughout the week across the region, making it popular and convenient for those who visit.

The parish is popular with a broad demographic, and welcomes those of all backgrounds to attend without having to commit.

Families particularly enjoy the flexibility and activities on offer, which includes Sunday School at St Mark’s every third Sunday of the month, and at St Paul’s every first Saturday of the month, as well as the new concept of ‘Messy Church.’

“This is a prgram for all the family,” Rev McKeague said.

“It involves craft, usually on some theme, stories, music, and a meal is provided afterwards.”

This is a great way for families and children to enjoy the warm atmosphere of the church, and is held at St Mark’s on the second Sunday each month from 4pm to 6pm.

There is also a Youth Group running at St Mark’s, which allows young people to get together in a positive environment every second Wednesday, and simply play games, have discussions, and make friends.

There is also a significant commitment to worship and pastoral in a number of the aged care facilities in the community.

In the lead-up to the busy Easter period, the local parish is looking forward to some major services and celebrations ahead on the calendar.

This upcoming Sunday marks Palm Sunday, and will be recognised with a single service at St John’s church in Thurgoona with an atmospheric open air mass, which will include the traditional blessing of the palms, and a barbecue.

Maundy Thursday is also a significant event on the Christian calendar, and the parish will be holding a Christian Passover meal on 2 April at 6.30pm at St James’ Hall to re-enact the Last Supper. Bookings will be necessary for this event.

When the period of Lent is over, the team still remains busy and provide local followers with an exciting and consistent schedule of events and services.

You can enjoy worship every Sunday at each of the four churches of the parish, while on the second Sunday of the month, there is a combined parish Eucharist at St Mark’s at 10am, followed by a parish lunch.

There are also midweek services on Wednesdays at St Mark’s at 9.30am, and for St James’ at 10am for those who can’t make it on weekends or who wish to worship not just on Sundays.

The church is very welcoming, and encourages those who are curious about the Christian gospel or are simply looking for somewhere to pray and enjoy some serenity, to come along to one of their many services.

Christians coming together THE Albury Wodonga Prayer Breakfast is on in April for Christians of all denominations to come together as one and ask God for His blessing and favour to be on all of our community.

The organising committee is made up of Christians from many different churches including Baptist, Pentecostal, Anglican and Catholic.

The people who will be praying during the breakfast also attend many different denominations.

You do not have to be attending a church to be welcome either - anyone who believes that Christ died for their sin, is a member

of His Church and is welcome in joining with other believers in an event that is not defined by where they go, or don’t go, on Sundays.

The prayer breakfast is held by a committee representing a group of Christian businesspeople from different denominations who believe that locally, Christians are looking for an opportunity to pray together to see God’s blessing and favour on our community.

MANY car owners like nothing better than to stand out in a crowd and automobile makers are only too happy to lend a hand... at a price.

The European brands are very accommodating and offer customers a major shopping list of options. Take Renault, for example.

I recently was in possession of one of the French manufacturer’s new Clios as a test car, which with add-ons was like no other vehicle I had come across.

The Oyster Grey mid-spec Clio TCe120 Dynamique, a sixspeed automatic comes onto the market at the manufacturer’s recommended price of $23,790.

However, with, I presume, the typical Renault buyer in mind, the car had been loaded up with special features.

For example, the paint was metallic, costing an extra $550; there was red exterior trim for $250; matching red dashboard and seat covering, $500; 17-inch Diamond Red alloy wheels, $750; and R-Link infotainment, $990, making the price as tested $26,830, plus on-roads.

I had to admit, the car did look a treat and I suspect the fan of exotic kit such as that from Renault would not blink at forking out the extra three grandplus to get heads turning.

As mentioned, the small hatchback was a Clio Dynamique, one of four models in the range, the others being Authentique, Expression and GT. Not only has Renault come up with a smooth, desirable design - inspired, it says by the DeZir concept car - a vehicle that symbolised love (how French) - the company offers the affordable personalisation program, mentioned above, that it claims is unprecedented in this section of the light car market.

Also first seen on the DeZir is the way the large Renault logo sits prominently on a gloss black background on the front and is made more distinctive by the headlight units, which include chrome details and LED daytime running lights.

The A1 is so small and it starts to

strain Audi’s design language. When you cram on the S-style bumpers and raccoon-eyed trim on the hatchback, it’s starts to look a bit busy.

It isn’t without its problems - the ride is harder even than the Fiesta ST which might weary some prospective buyers.

It’s also a bit difficult to justify the price - in its basic form it’s missing a few creature comforts that you’d expect in a $50,000 car - reversing camera, high-res screen, that sort of thing.

However, in the hot hatch world, those things don’t matter. It has the bragging rights, the tech and the outright blinding speed to take on the bonkers Focus ST and equally zany Megane RS. And even the Audi S3…

Those in the market for a hot hatch can have their pick of German-built and French ones from as little as $27,000.

There isn’t a dud among them now that the VW Polo GTI has had a bit of an update and you can pick and choose your style.

Audi’s S1 is aiming to be kind of the kids with its stiffly-priced S1.

Set the finances aside and consider for a moment what’s on offer. As it turns out, a lot.

Starting at $49,900, Audi S1 is by far the priciest of the small-hatch based hotties, at least until Mini’s madcap JCW arrives. This price is just almost double that of VW stablemate’s forthcoming 2015 Polo GTI. This is the best of times WOW, I can’t believe we are a quarter of the way through the year already and smack bang in the middle of the best time of the year to ride a motorcycle.

And what a hectic and exciting time it is!

This week Wodonga is hosting the annual general meeting of the Ulysses Motorcycle Club, a social club which is dedicated to motorcyclist aged 40 and older.

The local branch had been lobbying for many years to bring the AGM to our area and share what I believe to be one of the best areas in Australia with more than 3000 motorcyclists, and I wish them a very successful weekend.

Last weekend saw the running of the second Black Dog Ride from Wangaratta.

This event is designed to raise awareness of mental health issues and funds to help organisations such as Lifeline to support people in need and I applaud the organisers of this great event.

We joined a large group of riders from Albury and all over to participate with more than 250 bikes leaving from the Wangaratta aerodrome and heading over the hills to Mansfield where the Lions club had organised lunch.

The ride then headed back to Wangaratta for spit roast and entertainment.

This was a truly great ride and a great event.

It was also a great opportunity for Brenda and myself to try out our latest demo, the brand new Yamaha MT09 Tracer and I must admit I am very impressed by this bike.

The performance from this motor is truly amazing with plenty of power on tap and it is very flexible.

The bike felt very light and easy to ride two up and was very stable and sure-footed over the twisty mountain roads.

The neutral seating position made it very comfortable to ride and Brenda found the pillion seat equally comfortable.

Panniers come standard on this bike and add to its appeal as an all?round sports touring bike.

This coming weekend also sees the start of the moto GP season and with more bikes and teams competing than we have seen in years it promises to be truly exciting.

Seeing another side of the idol FORMER Australian Idol Damien Leith has been anything but idle of late with a new album released this month and tickets now on sale for his tour throughout Australia in May and June. The soft-spoken musician with the Irish accent has earned his way into the hearts of Australian audiences and is revered for not only his performances as an incredible singersongwriter, but also author and playwright.

Now, with a new album under his belt - Songs from Ireland - music fans and art lovers alike will have the chance to get a glimpse into another side of Damien as he takes his acclaimed one-man cabaret play The Parting Glass: An Irish Journey on the road bringing it to Albury in June.

The Parting Glass made its debut at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival where it received a rousing response. More recently, it played a sell-out show at The Joan in Sydney and Chapel Off Chapel in Melbourne, receiving standing ovations at both venues.

The musical play, which takes place in an Irish pub, sees

Damien take on the role of both a father and a son as they get to the bottom of a deep secret that has haunted them both. It is filled with humour and emotion, and, as you would expect from any pub setting in Ireland, it features a live band.

Every aspect of the The Parting Glass was carefully thought out, including the music selection. Having the live band really does give that ‘sitting in a pub having a pint’ atmosphere.

“The music throughout the show is Irish music,” Damien said.

“There is a collection of songs that I have just loved for years, songs like Danny Boy, Rocky Road to Dublin ... the band plays all the traditional instruments, fiddle, tin whistle, bodhran - it is a real Irish experience. You’ve got the drama side of it and the rousing Irish music.”

After the success of the cabaret festival, it was always Damien’s intention to take the show out on the road, it just took a couple of years to find time between his other musical commitments.

“I’ve been meaning to do it for a long time,” he said.

“We got an incredible response (at the cabaret festival) - standing ovations - getting such a great response I wanted to bring it on the road.”

Damien Leith first captured the hearts of the Australian public in the 2006 reality television show Australian Idol. Since then he has enjoyed platinumselling albums and multiple awards including ARIAs, MTV Australia Video Music Awards and Helpmann Awards.

Urgency of the insurgency Insurgent (M) Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts THE second book in the Divergent Series, Insurgent once again stars one of the current “it“ girls of Hollywood Shailene Woodley (apparently Jennifer Lawrence was busy).

The first movie drew direct and not always favourable comparisons with the Lawrence-led Hunger Games series. Like Hunger Games this is a dystopian society with factions, a choosing ceremony and struggles against a corrupt government and at the centre is a damaged young female protagonist. And like the Hunger Games this is a four-movie ‘trilogy’.

Not sure how people could make comparisons really?

Seriously though Divergent - set in a futuristic dystopian Chicago society divided into five factions Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Candor (the honest), Dauntless (the brave),

and Erudite (the intelligent) along with the Factionless may have suffered but Insurgent sets its own agenda.

The audience for Divergent/Insurgent, judging by the screenings I saw, seems younger - young teens and tweens looking for a strong role model and Woodley’s Tris Prior fits the bill perfectly.

The movie itself, while still dark, has a little more humour and the characters feel just a touch less damaged and a bit more relatable. This isn’t a copy - it’s more Hunger Games with training wheels and on that level it works well.

Picking up three days after the first movie Insurgent sees Tris, her “scary boyfriend” Four/Theo, brother Caleb (played by Woodley’s Fault In Our Stars love interest Ansel Elgort) and Peter (Miles Teller) on the run after evading a hostile takeover from the evil scheming Jeanine (played deliciously by Kate Winslet) and the rest of the Erudite faction.

Tris and Four are trying to

raise the other factions against the Erudites and take back control - but of course Tris has a secret - she’s Divergent and doesn’t fit into any one group and it just so happens that Jeanine needs a Divergent the perfect Divergent - to open a special cube with a message from the founders. Mmmm, wonder who that might be?

And just for good measure throw in a brunette Naomi Watts as Tris’s power crazy mother-in-law from hell (nice to see Australia’s Golden girls Watts and Blanchet (Cinderella) finally getting to play bad girls - although to be honest Watts as Four’s mother is probably under-utilised).

There are also some solid cameos by Daniel Dae Kim and Octavia Spencer as the head of their factions.

Are there plot holes to drive a truck through - yep, but there are enough good things to keep you involved in the action and even ready to come back twice more to see what happens.

Show of art by the book ‘AMAZING Australian Artists’ was launched nationally this week by Wodonga’s Allyssa Constable. The book features the work of many talented, local and national artists. The book already resides in the National Gallery of NSW, Powerhouse Museum and many other galleries and book stores.

The driving force behind the stunning book and collection of art is local artist and author, Allyssa Constable.

She is delighted to host an exhibition of a sample of the work featured in the premium coffee-table style book.

“My intention has been to showcase and gather together a range of beautiful art from many sources,” she said.

“I never cease to be amazed by the outstanding talent that lies hidden right here in our own country, and particularly in the local region.”

The gallery displays work from many artists featured in the book.

Local artists from the Albury-Wodonga area include Kathy Blakemore displaying watercolours; Heather Sparks - acrylic, watercolours; Katharine Rattray - illustrator; Meg Brown - watercolours; Lizabeth Souness - acrylic; Trevor Ierino - photography; and Stephanie Jakovac - acrylic.

Of 18 artists displayed in the pop-up gallery, 10 artists were on hand to celebrate the launch of ‘Amazing Australian Artists’ and share insights into the inspiration behind their art.

“Choosing work to feature in the book and gallery proved to be the most rewarding part of the journey - in being able to tap into and reveal the extraordinary talent that this region offers. The strength, diversity and extreme talent of Australian artists constantly amazes me.”

The launch, located in the quirky space of the old visitors centre on Gateway Island ran from 6.30pm until 9.30pm.

Everyone was welcome to come along and the crowd was strong at approximately 120 locals. Wine, excessive amounts of gourmet finger food and constant entertainment from local guitarist and singer Esther Jamieson added to the celebration of work displaying amazing Australian and local artists.

A $5 entry fee went to charity Country Hope and raised $445. The exhibition at the pop-up gallery in the old visitors centre will continue until the end of May.

By TANIA PHILLIPS SHE is one of the great iconic figures in Australian comedy and television and she’s set to visit Albury in April.

Denise Drysdale’s unique combination of song, comedy and overwhelming charisma leaves each audience gobsmacked and sore from laughing.

Honed over a 50-year career (she started young - learning to

dance at six and becoming a TV personality while still in her teens) her performance is slick, fun and yet still unpredictable.

At age 17, Drysdale joined the new show Kommotion as a go-go girl, becoming Melbourne’s first go-go dancer.

Since then, you name it, she’s done it on TV and on stage.

From performing for troops in Vietnam and being barrel girl for

Ernie Sigley to appearances on everything from The Norman Gunston Show, to Celebrity Squares, Bellbird, Hey Hey It’s Saturday, her own morning show and most recently The Circle on Channel Ten. On stage, she has appeared in many plays and musicals including: Salad Days, Grease, The Barry Crocker Show, Two Gentleman of Verona and Hello Dolly! But she

always seems most at home on a stage in front of a live audience.

Falling in love again HAVE you ever gone to view a house for sale and fallen for it, even before you see the whole home?

That’s not uncommon, and illustrates the importance of first impressions.

That is why, when preparing to sell a home, it is crucial to spend time, effort and, if the budget allows, money on making the exterior as attractive and inviting as possible.

It is known as kerb appeal and it is even more vital than spending time and effort improving and styling the interior for sale.

After all, no-one is going to appreciate your fabulous interior if they don’t go in the front door.

Take a tip from sales and buyers’ agents, and walk down the street to where those looking to buy your home would park.

Take a cold hard look at your house, from the front and the back. Imagine you have spotted this house online and are checking it out before contacting the agent - or not.

Also do this at night, as many buyers will, with the outside lighting turned on. What looks good and what doesn’t?

List the items needing work: fence repairs and/or painting, gate, path, garden, window frames, paintwork, brickwork, front door?

Work out which you can feasibly improve with your available budget and time.

If you’re unsure ask your agent, the expert on what will add value to your home and what may be overcapitalising or unnecessary effort.

The aim: a picture-perfect exterior, with arriving buyers saying, ‘this looks nice’.

Think hanging baskets and flower boxes, neatly trimmed hedges, weeded gardens and a show of seasonal flowers.

Add instant colour before the photographs are taken. Remember most buyers will form their initial judgement based on the online photographs. If your house does not match up to others in the area, they will not view it.

Top riders vying for championship slot KEEN horse riders will head to the Border over the Easter long weekend to vie for a spot in the Oceania Team Championships.

As nominations have opened for the 2015 Crowe Horwath Albury Wodonga International Horse Trials being held at the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre next month, riders will take on some of the best in the sport to ride at the Championships in New Zealand in May. The event already draws the best of the best with previous years' riders including Olympians Shane Rose, Stuart Tinney and Megan Jones expected to take part.

Organisers hope they will again be in the 400plus entries expected at this year’s competition.

Competitors will tackle the three disciplines of dressage, cross country and show jumping in their respective classes.

The event is now in its 18th year, and secretary Bradley Hayden is looking forward to another great competition on the Border.

The total prize pool for the entire event adds up to more than $12,000 with $500 awarded to the winner of the show jumping spectacular which is held from 8pm on the Saturday night.

Both a Senior and Young Rider event team will be selected at the event to compete in the Oceania Team Championships at Taupo, New Zealand, in May this year.

Dressage will run on Friday 3 April, and will be followed of a full day of action on the crosscountry course on Saturday.

Sunday will see the show jumping phase in the main arena, concluding around lunch time with the 3 star class.

The event also attracts a range of suppliers in the ‘trade village’ so the opportunity for a bit of shopping for those looking for riding apparel, horse equipment and saddlery is available.

TALLANGATTA won its first A Grade cricket premiership in 17 years when it defeated minor premiers and favourites East Albury last weekend.

The Bushrangers’ victory came with a touch of sadness and grief after the death of popular club president John Thomas’ wife Carmen only days before the match.

Her sudden passing rocked the close-knit community, and its players responded in the best possible way under the circumstances by winning an epic encounter.

In a high scoring and enthralling contest, it was Tallangatta who got home by just 19 runs in a gripping and tense finish.

Tallangatta won the toss and posted 264 on Saturday at a beautifully presented Les Cheesley Oval and wicket in Wodonga.

Captain Matt Armstrong top scored with a superb (83) and along with star English import James Weighal with (68) added 133 for the fifth wicket.

Openers Greg McGilvray (22) and Torquil McKillop added 51 for the opening stand to set up the healthy score.

East Albury skipper James McNeil was outstanding claiming 5/37 including the crucial wicket of the rampant Weighal. Cameron White was also excellent with 4/53.

In reply, on Sunday the game had momentum swing after momentum swing with Tallangatta grabbing two early wickets, and then East responding.

Alex Popko who blasted a century the previous week was again dangerous with (48), while Aleem Mahmood fell to a brilliant catch to be out for (34).

After looking solid at 2/84 the game turned again when the Crows lost three wickets before the tea break to be struggling at 5/107.

Popko, Mahmood and McNeil fell in a rollicking 20-minute period to have Tallangatta back on top going into tea.

However, Dylan Weeding who kept superbly on day one led a spirited fightback with wonderful support from the experienced Joel Shepherd.

The pair added 77 before Clint Reid had Shepherd caught behind for (26). Kris Milosta attacked immediately on coming to the crease.

Milosta when on (18) skied a high ball over cover that seemed to stay airborne for an eternity with Reid underneath it judging superbly to take a brilliant catch.

Weeding then edged Weighal through to keeper McGilvray who took a blinding onehanded catch to send the Tallangatta supporters into a frenzy of delight.

Weeding departed for a brilliant innings of (60) that had got the Crows back into contention. Chris Bridle was bowled by Bousfield to leave East 9/218.

Some intelligent and selective shot making by Sean Barrett and Cam White slowly got East back into it with a 27-run stand.

The game though ended when Matt Armstrong bowled White with East Albury just 19 runs shy of victory.

Weighal who bowled with at times lethal pace and bounce claimed 5/65 off 24 overs to be named man of the match ahead of Armstrong who took 3/47 off 25.2 overs.

It was Tallangatta’s first premiership since the 1997/’98 season and one that will be long remembered in the history of Cricket Albury Wodonga.
