Was it murder?

By JESSE GRAHAM and KATH GANNAWAY A HIKER who disappeared seven years ago near Healesville may have met with foul play, according to new information on the case of missing man, Warren Meyer.

Mr Meyer’s wife, Zanette (Zee) Meyer, has been leading a campaign to gather more information on the disappearance of her husband on Easter Sunday, 23 March, 2008.

She said that a caller to police during 2014’s Missing Persons Week, where Victoria Police appeal for information on unsolved missing persons cases, said that Mr Meyer was murdered, and buried with a bulldozer.

The caller alleged that Mr Meyer came across a marijuana crop while walking in the Yarra Ranges National Park from the Dom Dom Saddle car

park, and that he was killed as a result.

Two crops were found while police and family members were searching for Mr Meyer since 2008 - one immediately after the disappearance, the other in January, 2009.

It has also been noted that numerous shots were heard in the vicinity at the time of Mr Meyer’s disappearance.

Mrs Meyer said her husband was in good health and had decades of experience walking bush trails, and was carrying extensive supplies on the day of his disappearance.

“Warren was a skilled hiker of 30plus years and safety conscious,” she said.

“He belonged to Bayside Bushwalking Club for years, always talked about safety and carried all the tools for a safe walk.”

At the time of his disappearance,

Mr Meyer was carrying food, water, a charged phone, map, whistle and a GPS, and had planned for a 10-kilometre walk on either the Mount Morley track or Mount Monda track from the car park on the Black Spur, 15 minutes out of Healesville.

“Warren was happy and healthy over Easter - he was only going to be away three, three and a half hours,” Mrs Meyer said.

“He leapt out of bed.”

Addressing rumours that her husband may have organised his disappearance, Mrs Meyer said the pair had a happy, 31-year long marriage and had spent the week before his disappearance happily organising a holiday to Canada.

Despite three official searches in 2008, including the largest line-search in Victoria Police history, and numerous searches carried out by family and

friends since, no trace of Mr Meyer has ever been found.

Mrs Meyer said she had been through “seven years of hell” since her husband’s disappearance, and was calling for an inquest into the handling of the case, which she believes was insufficient.

“You have that hole in your heart that you can’t plug, because you can’t get the answers that you need,” she said.

The family has expressed concern at reports of gunshots not being immediately followed up, and confusion as to whether Mr Meyer’s phone records were accessed in the initial investigation.

The case is currently before the Coroner’s Court, but Mrs Meyer and the family are currently spearheading a social media campaign to get people to come forward.

The campaign, “What happened to Warren? Speak up” is being run via www.warrenmeyer.com.au, with information on the case, as well as a twitter campaign through the account @SpeakUp4Warren with the hashtag #SpeakUp. A $100,000 reward is on offer.

A candlelight vigil will be held on Easter Sunday, 5 April, at the Dom Dom Saddle Car Park to mark the seventh anniversary of Mr Meyer’s disappearance.

Residents are welcome to come along, bring picnic gear and a candle, and Mrs Meyer is expected to make a speech to mark the occasion.

Mrs Meyer told the Mail she believed that holding the vigil on the Easter Sunday holiday may trigger a memory in locals who may have been in the area on the day Mr Meyer disappeared.

Wasps plague hits shire

By KATH GANNAWAY AS Yarra Ranges residents dodge and swipe their way through what is reportedly the worst European wasp season in 20 years, Yarra Ranges Council is encouraging people to help eradicate the nests.

The wasps are in plague proportions throughout the shire with weather conditions providing the ideal breeding season.

Don Valley resident Rick Houlihan lost two sheep after they swallowed wasps, and was bitten 20 times himself when he inadvertently stepped on a vacant nest.

He said seeing the sheep die from being stung by wasps

had been horrible.

“The wasps are attracted to the saliva around their mouths and they snap at them, the same as they do for flies,” said Mr Houlihan who has killed 15 nests on his and a neighbouring property in the last two weeks.

The problem for sheep, and potentially for any animal, is that the wasps, keep stinging if they are swallowed and can cause swelling that blocks the airways.

Shoppers in Healesville have also been under siege, according to Melanie Brown from Retpro who manages The Walk shopping centre.

Ms Brown said they called in pest controllers last week

While council has responsibility for nests on councilowned land, Mr Varmalis said nests on private property are the responsibility of the land owner.

“If you are aware of a European wasp nest on your neighbour’s property, we encourage you to talk to your neighbour about taking action to destroy the nest,” he said.

Pedestrian hit by car later died A LILYDALE man has died in hospital after he was hit by a car in Coldstream earlier this month.

Police believe the 54-year-old Lilydale man was crossing Maroondah Highway, near the intersection of Killara Road in Coldstream at 10.30am on Thursday 12 March, when he was hit by a car.

He sustained life-threatening injuries as a result, and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

He died on Friday 20 March. Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

As of Monday 23 March, the road toll stands at 66 deaths - five more than the same time last year.

Restoring station to pristine glory

By JESSE GRAHAM RESIDENTS from around the valley and beyond flocked to the Yarra Glen railway station on Saturday to see restoration works on the Yarra Valley Railway firsthand.

The station building opened its doors on 21 March to visitors, who were able to walk through and see the volunteer work to completely rebuild and restore the station to its former glory.

Mini-bus tours also ran visitors out to the old TarraWarra Station site, where they were able to see the new rail bridges under construction and talk to volunteers about their work to re-open the rail line between Yarra

Mr Smith told the Mail he was “proud and excited” to see the work carried out so far, much of which was funded by $3.56 million in Federal Government money.

“This wouldn’t have happened if it hadn’t been for the passion and dedication of Brett (Whelan) and his team, that secured the funding from the council and helped the council and myself advocate very strongly for the large sum of money to bring this about,” he said.

“I think it’s been talked about for a long time and now, you can actually see it coming.”

tion, Peter Andersen, said the station had to be completely rebuilt, with the old one attacked by white ants and arsonists in the past.

Mr Andersen said the new building, however, would look identical to the old one, with more modern interiors in places such as the toilets.

“It will look pretty swish, and as it was in the ’50s,” he said.

He said that volunteers were always welcome to sign up and help with the project.

“I’ll take unskilled labour and teach them,” Mr Andersen said.

Yarra Valley Railway vice-president Brett Whelan said the support the railway had received while working to restore the line was humbling.

“It’s humbling to see such a large community project running so well, with the input from local businesses, tourist operators and other community groups,” he said.

HEALESVILLE police have called on the public to dob in hoon drivers, after an unknown driver left tyre marks all over the town’s main street.

Earlier this month, the unknown driver did burnouts down Healesville’s main street (Maroondah Highway), near the Memo Hall.

Sergeant Stewart Thomson told the Mail last week that police were following up on the matter, but the tyre marks all over the roads “reflected on our town.”

Sgt Thomson said police needed residents witnessing hoon behaviour to take down as many details as possible, such as speeding, burnouts or unsafe driving, and to contact triplezero immediately.

He said residents often left messages on the Healesville police station’s answering machine, but without calling triple-zero, police could not respond in time to catch the drivers.

Taking down details, such as car make and model, registration plate numbers and any distinguishing features on the car or of the driver are critically important, according to Sgt Thomson.

Another important step in catching criminals is having residents willing to make official police statements, which police can then use to arrest and prosecute those doing the wrong thing.

“If people see it (hoon driving), we need people to take a stand, contact police, put pen to paper, make a statement and then police will take action,” Sgt Thomson said.

Expressions of Interest are invited for membership on the Community Reference Group Closing date 30th of April 2015 Yarra Ranges Council is seeking expressions of interest from members of the community to join a Community Reference Group for a review of the Regional Strategy Plan.

The project which is being undertaken in partnership with the State Government will be used to inform preparation of a new Localised Planning Statement for Yarra Ranges. The Planning Statement will become part of the State section of the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme and is also intended to be the basis for an amended version of the Regional Strategy Plan.

More cycling, less bickering

YARRA Glen residents are reported to have raised their eyebrows over the removal of 10 oak trees along Bell Street north, opposite Symons Street, making room for a 28-lot building development (Mountain Views Mail, 17 February, 2015).

Young Australians are desperate to find affordable land near their central business district or inner-suburban professional jobs.

Older Australians are downsizing and reverse mortgaging all their assets, fearing an imminent age-pension crisis.

Everyone needs shelter, somewhere, so Yarra Glen complainants opposing such generous site development are simply barking up the wrong tree.

The Yarra Glen and District Men’s Shed Inc. made its own civil wishes widely known and today leases a 222 square metre building from Yarra Ranges Council.

About 28 distinguished district gentlemen gather for occasional hobbies and conversation.

Nearby, native trees continue to ‘disappear’.

Real estate advertising received in my letterbox (minus an Australia Post stamp and postmark) shows 22 of 28 building sites on ‘The Glen Estate’ are very small: 500 square metres (or a little more) with many less than 600 square metres.

Lots number 15-19, 22, 25 and 26 are hardly big enough for a kennel and a carport.

Where will the conditional native trees be planted?

Is there enough room?

Yarra Glen residents have ‘no grounds’ for complaint about property development.

Land sales are a prime local industry.

These pocket-size lots will make excellent portable dwelling spaces for transient fruit-pickers who only stay a while.

Lots 15 to 19 are tailor-made for a two-storey strip of townhouses, where sprightly retirees can watch the Yarra Valley horse races.

I’ve encountered drivers whose idea of “sufficient“ distance is simply leaving enough centimetres to not clip a cyclist with a side-mirror. Cyclists very often are seen as an inconvenience to be dealt with on the roads. This is where attitudes need to change before meaningful steps can be made to improve conditions.

In areas such as the Dandenong Ranges, groups of cyclists can often make it difficult for drivers to get through the hills, without slowing and waiting for a safe area to pass, which understandably frustrates some drivers.

But this inconvenience of waiting for a safe area to pass is far outweighed by the importance of keeping all road users safe. Rash overtaking and not leaving appropriate distance puts riders at risk of being injured or killed, just so someone can shave minutes off their trip.

People who ride bikes, through taxation and council rates, pay for the roads just like motorists, and are just as entitled to use the roads, but are more vulnerable than any other road user.

It follows that measures to protect these users, such as a more stringent definition of a safe passing distance, should be at the very least thoughtfully considered and discussed.

After all, for motorists, minimum safe passing distances are a matter of convenience, and their opinions and feelings matter in that regard.

But for cyclists, the issue is literally life or death.

CYCLING is an exhilarating form of exercise. Riding down hills, through back streets and even through Healesville’s buzzing main street, it’s great to experience towns in the valley and the hills on two wheels.

But when it comes to discussing laws around cycling, much of the conversation gets bogged down in bickering.

Every time the activity is mentioned or a new initiative is discussed, a dissenting voice isn’t too far away, protesting or recalling an anecdote about a time when cyclists did them wrong.

And that’s fine, because people are perfectly entitled to see differently about issues and the way society is shaped.

But conversations like these don’t just miss the point; they travel away from it at the speed it takes to type an aggressive Facebook comment.

A bill was tabled by Eastern Metropolitan MLC, Samantha Dunn, last week, calling for a one-metre distance between cyclists and vehicles overtaking, with a greater distance in areas with higher speed limits.

Cycling groups immediately supported the bill, while groups such as the RACV, very rightly, questioned the bill’s necessity - the current law encourages a “sufficient“ distance to be kept, anyway.

But the key here is quantifying something that, currently, is completely subjective.

believe that we must act strongly and quickly on all levels to get this issue resolved.

It is a scandal that we pay hundreds of millions of dollars for bus services that are hardly used outside school peak times.

Every time one of those 40-seater Ventura buses passes you by, take a look inside and see if anyone is on them.

They are paid for the kilometres they travel and have no incentive to improve the patronage.

Bus drivers have told me that fare avoidance is close to 100 per cent.

This means that there is hardly any income received for bus services.

I have a plan that has been well received by all I’ve spoken with through my local campaigning over the last eight months.

That is to replace these larger 40-seat buses with 10-seater buses that run every 10 minutes between centres, in both directions, one each way.

Each centre will be linked by another pair of buses that also go each way.

This will provide a matrix of links to each of the towns in the Dandenongs, enabling travellers to go anywhere.

The cost model is easily explained: $1 per ride with 10 services per hour (2x5trips) and 10 people on each of these buses will earn $100 per hour.

The wages for two drivers would be $40 an hour for each and the remaining $20 per hour is for fuel, maintenance and capital depreciation.

Eventually fuel should evolve into electric hybrid vehicles; these are currently available. It would mean the establishment of solar powered battery charging stations, which is infrastructure needed for the electric cars of the future.

These smaller buses can support the following needs: •฀ Public transport everywhere and at all hours; •฀ Tourism that can bring anyone from Melbourne by train and buses to help boost our small businesses without creating car congestion and parking problems; •฀ Ecotourism with onboard video and guides promoting appreciation of our magnificent environment; •฀ A dial-a-bus service for those who cannot easily get to the bus stops; and •฀ Emergency evacuation off the mountain when threats like fire occur.

I will work hard to deliver this plan with the broad community support I’ve received.

Targets on slow burn

By KATH GANNAWAY A WARBURTON woman is urging Upper Yarra residents to have a say on planned burning targets.

The issue was one of many raised at a bushfire information meeting in Warburton last week.

Peter West from the Department of Environment, Land and Water Protection and Justin Leonard from CSIRO, were among the speakers who addressed the topical issue of planned burns, leading to discussion about the competing sciences, and the impact of planned burns in and around Warburton and across Central Highlands.

Responding to a statement by Kellie Gee about the value, and the extent of planned burns, Mr West said a review was currently being undertaken by the Inspector-General for Emergency Management which would look at reviewing performance targets for the future bushfire fuel management program on public land.

The review was announced in February this year by the Minister for Enviornment, Climate Change and Water, Lisa Neville.

She said while the review would not affect the department’s 2014-’15 program, it would begin a process to develop an evidence-based approach to reducing the risk of fire and protecting lives, communities and the environment.

Minister for Emergency Services, Jane Garrett, also cited a ‘best evidence-based approach’ as part of the review. Ms Gee said she would be making a submission, and encouraged others to put in a submission.

“In making a submission I would be hoping it would make a difference to the targets and that less public land would be burnt as a result, she said.

By KATH GANNAWAY LIVING up to the 2015 theme, the 250 women who came to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges for the Yarra Ranges Women on Farms Gathering over the weekend, not only made every woman count ... they made every minute count.

After two years in the planning, the organising committee welcomes women from regional and rural townships across Australia and put on a spectacular program of events.

Speakers including keynote speaker executive director of Worawa Aboriginal College, former Sapphire, among many other achievements, Lois Peeler, Brooke Collins-Wandin who did the Wel-

Overtaking cyclists

Crime stats on the rise

A FORMER Yarra Ranges councillor called for changes to current cycling laws, which could see drivers fined for not keeping a metre distance.

Member for Eastern Metropolitan Samantha Dunn said the bill she tabled last week would improve safety for cyclists in areas such as the Dandenongs and provide clarity to current laws.

Ms Dunn’s bill, tabled on Wednesday 18 March, would make it unlawful for motorists to overtake a cyclist with less than one metre distance, or less than a metre and a half if the speed limit was over 60km/h.

Currently, the law only requires drivers to pass with “sufficient distance” and agencies such as VicRoads advise drivers to try and leave a metre distance. The penalty for not leaving sufficient distance is $1500 fine, which would remain the punishment for drivers not leaving one metre under the new laws.

Ms Dunn, a former Lyster Ward councillor, told the Mail that the proposed bill would bring “clarity” to the law, which is currently more open to interpretation, and improve safety for riders in areas such as the Dandenongs.

“There is no doubt that the roads in the Dandenongs are challenging, whether you’re a cyclist or a motorist, and combined is even more difficult,” she said.

“I think, ultimately, it’s about providing clarity to drivers around what is a safe passing distance and it’s about keeping cyclists as safe as possible - they’re incredibly vulnerable road users.”

Referencing similar laws being trialled in Queensland, South Australia and the ACT, Ms Dunn said that having one metre for passing was already established across the country, and had been proven to improve rider safety.

“For me, Victoria is lagging behind at the moment - I think it’s time for us to get up to date with what’s happening around the country,” she said.

The Royal Automotive Club of Victoria (RACV) posted on social media on Wednesday, stating it was opposed to the laws, and criticised the bill for potentially causing problems for drivers.

“Even when passing riders in bike lanes, riding to the right of the lane, drivers will need to change lanes if the new metre rule is introduced.”

Eildon MP Cindy McLeish, noting she had yet to see the bill in the Lower House of parliament, said she also had concerns about the bill, and didn’t believe mandatory distances were the right solution.

“With regard to the bill, I do have concerns as to how it is proposed that this be enforced,” she said. “In particular, I have concerns for how this would be implemented on local roads, which are narrow and windy and double lines for some distance, such as the Black Spur or the Chum Creek Road.”

“Whilst we need to find an effective way to share the road, I am not sure this is the solution for us, locally.”

But Ms Dunn said the distance was measured from the bike, not from the edge of bike lanes, which are widely used in the city and in areas in

the Yarra Ranges, such as Healesville.

The laws on passing cyclists currently allow for drivers to cross a solid white line when passing, only when safe to do so, and this would continue to be the case if Ms Dunn’s bill becomes law.

“The law is in place to give guidance, but the reality is that drivers should only pass a cyclist if it is safe to do so - ultimately, that should guide their decisions on how they drive on the road,” Ms Dunn said.

Monbulk MP and Deputy Premier James Merlino said the legislation would need to pass a “common sense test” to be supported, but that the government was open to considering the bill.

Ms Dunn said the bill would be discussed in coming months, but was not able to give an approximate timeline to when it will be debated in parliament.

FAMILY violence and drug-related crimes continue to be a major concern in the Yarra Ranges, with statistics showing a rise in offences.

The Crime Statistics Agency last week released its annual data for last year, with the total offence count in the local government area breaking the 7000 barrier.

Among the most concerning, though, is the prevalence of family violence or familyrelated incidents, which has risen from 756 in 2010 to 1373.

Drugs-related offences followed suit.

Of particular note is the cultivation or manufacture of drugs, which rose from 21 counts to 63 last year.

This followed a major increase in druguse and possession offences, rising from 267 in 2012 to 326.

While it’s important to remember these are only the reported cases, such statistics give an indication of the extent.

Crime Statistics Agency Chief Statistician, Fiona Dowsley, said the report offers valuable insight for the community.

“The Crime Statistics Agency’s goal is to make crime statistics available to the Victorian community in a clear and accessible way,” Ms Dowsley said.

Other areas of concern for law-enforcement and the community are sexual offences, with 234 recorded.

There were five homicide and related offences in the Yarra Ranges.

Meanwhile, over the same period, Cardinia Shire’s total offence count increased from 589 to 1222.

While in Murrindindi Shire, the count increased from 58 to 142.

Sustainable festival gathers support

Ecotopia is one of them.

With an emphasis on sustainable living, and improving health and environment issues, the event is clearly living up to its commitment.

On hand at the event were countless stallholders promoting the benefits of

green living.

This included the solar and bio-diesel powered stages, the environmental information stalls and the recycled fashion parade.

Now in its third year, Ecotopia continues to find an audience among the Yarra Junction and wider region.

Community engagement co-ordinator Chelsea McNabb is impressed with the evolution of the event.

“There were some last-minute

changes, and it was quite stressful, but we are pleased with how it’s come together,” she said.

“The fashion parade has gone particularly well.

“And we are celebrating without destroying the Earth.”

Ms McNabb said luring rapper Joelstics to the stage was a big coup, as it appealed to the teenage audience.

She added that it has increased the profile of many individuals and local

Amid the beautiful autumn day, the crowds lapped up their chance to delve into such initiatives.

Among the most popular stalls was the smoothie stall, with the customers cycling to mix their own smoothies.

Bella Riley, 14, from Yarra Junction, was one who enjoyed the chance to enjoy a cycle and a smoothie.

She described the process as a fun way to enjoy a treat.

Ms McNabb said without sponsor support, the event would not have been such a success.

This included support from Yarra Ranges Council, the Warburton and Yarra Junction community banks, the Upper Yarra community house, the Upper Yarra museum and Yarra Valley Permaculture.

Gold in them ‘thar’ hills

By KATH GANNAWAY GOLD mining in the Upper Yarra is the forgotten legacy according to Russell Falkenberg.

Russell worked in the mining industry around Reefton and Hoddles Creek and his diorama of a working goldmine was a popular attraction at Crank Up last year.

It will be back again this year when the Upper Yarra Valley Historical Society runs the event on the weekend of 28 and 29 March at the Upper Yarra Museum at Yarra Junction.

He is a goldmine of information about the industry he says was a major driver of the economy in its heyday.

“There were 2200 men and women at Reefton when the mines were going in the 1860s,” he says.

Gold came well before the timber industry according to Russell,

who says there is still plenty of gold in them thar hills, and he has some wonderful stories to tell of that golden era.

Crank Up is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the history and folklore of the Upper Yarra region.

The museum is in itself a goldmine of information about the people, places and activities over the decades.

In addition to pioneer crafts such as the blacksmith shop, working draught horses and steamrollers, the event will this year feature a display of hot rods.

Rob’s Bloods keeper

By KATH GANNAWAY THERE’S no doubting Rob Nolan’s passion for Healesville Football Club.

His face literally beams when he speaks of the club he has had an association with for decades.

Rob, who has been a Bloods’ player, including playing in an under-17 and two seconds premiership teams over the years, has by a process of elimination become the keeper of the club’s more than 100year history, “I used to be the club’s unofficial historian, and I suppose you could say I’m now the official historian,” he said by way of explanation of how he came to be the history keeper.

“In 1988 when the club had its centenary I sort of steered those celebrations and it’s something that has just evolved because no-one else was really interested in that aspect of the club.”

A display Rob mounted at Healesville Library earlier this month is a launching pad for the hundreds of facts, figures and anecdotes he has gathered as he’s delved into the records, and into the memories of past players.

He’s picked the brains of the men, and women, who he regards as the club’s elders, and says it only takes a photo on the wall to get the anecdotes and memories pouring out.

The collection which is on display until the end of this month is grass-roots football magic.

The photographs dating back to the good times, and through the droughts, are in a way a mirror of the town.

The names and faces, from the Badger Creek Football Club made up predominately of Aboriginal players, through to the numerous premiership photos taken at Queen’s Park, almost invariably with the iconic Mount Riddell as the backdrop, reflect the names that crop up in almost every aspect of the town’s development over the years.

And, of course, now including netball - all part of what Rob says is history in real time.

Every aspect of the club is fodder for the history books.

There’s no such thing as past history for Rob. Of the ‘good old days’ he says it’s hard to compare eras.

“Obviously the game has changed,” he says.

“But, I have a lot of respect for the boys who played the game way back then.

“The theme is the same, it’s about blokes coming together to do something that they enjoy doing, but back then they played in conditions that

were just horrible a lot of the time.

“When you got out there in the wind, and the rain, and the mud, it was hard going; we have them to thank for persevering through the decades to the point now where our boys never see any mud.”

Turning up for the game wasn’t the issue, but fronting up every Tuesday and Thursday for training, didn’t have the adrenalin push of running out against another club.

“You had to psyche yourself up in the rain, with mud up to your ankles.

“To play on Saturday, you had to train.

“The motivation remains the same.

“That’s why even today, you have to believe in the team, and what it is you’re trying to achieve as a team,” he says, citing Luke Barclay who is coming up for his 200th game this season.

He’s missed only one game since 2005.

“It’s things like that, things that are happening right now, that I really love,” Rob says.

“I’m here to witness it, and it’s terrific; it’s a privilege.”

The library display is part of a campaign to get the town behind the club.

“Every club needs that local community support, and 2015, he says, has all the hallmarks of being a good time to be a Bloods supporter.

“We’re looking forward to this year with a couple of good recruits, a good coach, a good president and a good committee, and we want to get people involved.”

If the historic saying “you need to know where you came from, to know where you’re going”, is anything to go by, Healesville Library is a great place to garner inspiration.

A SUNNY autumn day greeted the competitors for the Goulburn River Championships at the Woods Point Gun Club.

Chuck Lay and Rob Bevis started the day well with a win in the 10-target Continental Points Eye Opener with 29/30 each.

The first event was the 20-target Doubler Barrel Continental Goulburn River Championship, sponsored by club vice-president Peter West and his wife Ellen.

Phillip Woods and Phillip Desmond both returned perfect 20/20 scores to shoot off for the sash. It only took two targets for Woods to win his first sash at the Point for 2015, 22/22.

Desmond won AA Grade outright, 20/20, Mick Ward was second with 42/43. A Grade was an easy win for Woods 20/20, from

the Hoon 16/20.

Laurie Poile didn’t let his secretarial duties hold him back from taking B Grade 18/20, John Butters second 16/20. C Grade was an all family affair with Greg Shahin’s 19/20 beating brother Peter’s 17/20.

The main event was the 75-target Streuber Buckle Championship that featured a 1920 US Silver Dollar Mounted in a trophy frame with embossed leather belt buckles for each of the grade winners.

Desmond eclipsed all opposition with three perfect rounds of 25/25 to take the trophy and the overall buckle.

In AA Grade, Bevis’s 74/75 was enough for first, with Ward second 72/75. The Hoon, having just got off crutches after a hip replacement, won A Grade 71/75 from Peter West 83/90 after a

Full Moon at racing

By KATH GANNAWAY HEALESVILLE speedway driver Ben Moon has taken out the 2015 Victorian Sports Sedan title.

In a win that surprised even him, Moon held off the field of around 30 competitors at Alexandra Speedway on Saturday, 14 March, to claim the title for the second time.

A late starter to speedway, he started in his late twenties and has been on the track for eight or nine years.

His first Victorian title came in 2012 and while he is more than pleased with his second title, he says it was totally unexpected.

Coming back after a 10-month break, Moon qualified with a two-race meeting at Rosedale just the weekend before.

He had given the engine of his VS Commodore a freshen up to run the title event and wasn’t disappointed with the performance.

“It did really well,” he said.

“I was hoping to do well and going out to have some fun.

“I had a lot of luck in my favour on the night, and the other favourites were quite unlucky as it eventuated.

Taking the front line position for around the last eight of the 30 laps, he held off the rest of the field, coming in ahead of Luke Fallon and Brendan Miller to become the new state champion.

Thompson was on track for the race in which Damien Miller topped the qualifying results with the defending champion Matt Nelson alongside him then Brendan Miller, Rahmon Rivero, and Moon and Fallon making up the top six.

Concurring with Moon’s comments about the vagaries of luck on the night, Thompson said the race didn’t go according to plan for a number of drivers.

“A spin to Damien Miller while leading on lap eight saw his car being re-directed to the rear of the field to restart, not before Rivero through the dust unable to see spat up by drivers driving under the pole line slammed into Miller putting himself out of the race,” he said.

“Daniel Unternahrer then hit concrete on lap 11 to be eliminated while Nelson thought he might have done a gearbox and pulled out of the race while leading soon after.

“Fallon held the lead briefly, Moon assumed the lead from him and Damien Miller came forward from last on lap eight to be in the top five again.

“Moon went on to record his second Victorian Sports Sedan title victory from Fallon, Brendan Miller, Damien Miller and Andrew Jordan who took over fifth place from Tim McPherson on a last gasp run on lap 30,” he said.

Other finishers included Aaron Marshall, Sam Williams, Matt Chiminello, Dale Smith and James Powell, all on the lead lap.

Moon, who works in the family business, Yarra Coffee in Lilydale, is among hundreds of Yarra Valley enthusiasts who race, and who have raced, on the sand and granite track at Alex over the years.

“It’s definitely a popular track with the locals,” he said, adding a recommendation for anyone thinking of taking up a high-octane sport.

“It’s the cheapest motorsport you can do, and as a sport, it’s great for getting kids off the streets.”

Tigers claim fame YVCA WOORI Yallock is the champion of the Yarra Valley Cricket Association after a stellar performance in the grand final.

The victory caps off a great rise for the Tigers.

After enticing former junior gun Daniel Mock to lead the club, Woori Yallock assembled a talented group of players for this season.

Woori Yallock had no hesitations in electing to bat first, in order to seize another chance to put up a decent score.

But the Burras had different ideas.

Through a pair of wickets from the brilliant Mick Walker, and his reliable partner in crime David Lever, the Tigers soon found themselves under the pump at 4/24.

Consolidation was called for, and in-form captain Daniel Mock and Ryan Frost came together and steadied the ship to guide their side to 4/87 at tea.

Upon return from the tea interval, the quick wicket of Frost again opened the door for the Burras.

Mock had other ideas, and, after establishing himself at the wicket, he wasn’t going to let his team down.

Through a pair of useful partnerships with Simon Young and Greg Selby, Mock’s innings of 77 enabled his team to loosen the chains and post a handy 186.

After day one, most had the Burras in front, as most thought they had enough talent in the bank.

Warburton-Millgrove made steady progress at the start of their innings, and the in-form David Lever threatened to stay at the crease and take the game away from his opposition.

The brilliant stroke-maker couldn’t repeat his semi-final heroics.

His wicket with the score on 50 started a worrying trend for the favourites.

The batsmen couldn’t nudge their noses in front as talented allrounder, Simon Young, and reliable spinner, Ben Hayes, turned the screws.

Warburton-Millgrove’s long batting order ensured the Burras were only one partnership away from victory, however, the partnership never came.

They were eventually dismissed for 148.

Some doubted the Tigers’ claims to be top dogs, as they struggled to beat the experienced line-ups of Seville and Warburton-Millgrove.

But they put those doubts to rest in emphatic fashion across two weekends of hard-edged finals cricket.

In R.A. Finger Trophy play, Seville and Coldstream clashed at Woori Yallock.

A useful partnership from Tom Page (31) and Michael Stevenson (27 not out) added some stability to the innings and ensured Seville reached a defendable 165.

The wickets were shared for the Crocs, as the bowlers worked as a team to keep the Blues in check.

The total looked to be short of the mark.

Despite losing their first two wickets before the score had reached 20, Ben Walsh (40) and Stephen Phillips (65) combined for an extended partnership that had the Crocs well in control.

Someone forgot to tell the Sandfort brothers, Ron and Mark.

Even at 5/130, most had the Crocs still in front, with just one decent partnership, or a couple of lusty blows needed to close the gap on victory.
