Violet’s 101 reasons for love song to her mayor Leaders on Avalon:

By NOEL MURPHY SHERRY and singing could be the secret to a long life, if Violet Allon is anyone to go by.

The 101-year-old gave her golden tonsils a birthday workout this week with a selfpenned love song to Mayor Darryn Lyons. “You are the one I adore... all I want from you is to hear you say you love me,� she warbled to him at his Elephant and Castle Hotel. “We could have you on The Voice soon,� Cr Lyons grinned in response.

Born in London in 1914, Violet lived for years a stone’s throw from Southwark’s Elephant and Castle Hotel.

While Cr Lyons presented her with flowers for her birthday, she presented him with an impressive brass and leather Elephant and Castle buckle and strap, possibly from a London brewery horse.

Violet arrived in Australia on New Year’s Day 1960, settling in Melbourne before moving to Geelong 40 years ago. “I remember the bombing of London, the whistle of the bombs,� she said. “I lived through the whole war and I worked making shells for aircraft machinegunners.�

Violet joined daughter Jean Reid and son-in-law Graham to celebrate her 101st birthday at Cr Lyons’ hotel over a Guinness pie and a sherry on St Patrick’s Day. Jean testified to her mum’s remarkable staying power. “She’s just excellent. We take her out every week and she writes her own songs and sings them,� she said, prompting a quick reply from mum. “Yes, they’re my own songs – I’m still with it, you know,� Violet chimed in.

Cr Lyons said he planned to have the brass Elephant and Castle buckle mounted and installed in his hotel’s main bar.

JETSTAR is under pressure to improve its services at Avalon Airport as a new campaign gets under way for more taxpayer-funded subsidies to keep the low-cost carrier at Geelong.

G21’s Elaine Carbines said Jetstar was using the wrong business model at Avalon, focussing only on cut-rate discount flights instead of what the region wanted. “It’s nonsense for Jetstar to say people don’t utilise it, I think it’s a furphy. Jetstar says that planes aren’t full but that’s not what Avalon tells us,� said Ms Carbines, the chief of the region’s councils alliance body. “I’ve met with (Jetstar CEO) David Hall and impressed on him that Jetstar’s service is not good enough.

Flying to Sydney only is not good enough when our people in the region want to fly all over Australia. “There are only five flights a day - that’s just not appropriate. When it offered flights all over Australia it was well supported. “David Hall says the only business model for Avalon is

It’s nonsense to say people are deliberately driving past when some flights are very inconvenient and only go to Sydney.� “We think they have the wrong business model and don’t offer a full fleet of services to multiple destinations that any other carrier would offer. “We’d be prepared to pay for services and I think people would be happy to pay prices commensurate with Tullamarine.�

Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons said he received a sympathetic hearing when he raised the Jetstar problem in talks with Prime Minister Tony Abbott in Canberra yesterday. “The PM needs to know Avalon is the key to Geelong’s future. I think he concurred with what I was saying about the business model. You really have to look at it - it’s not rocket science.

SOME might say Geelong’s gone to the dogs but the truth is it’s the other way around.

In fact, the municipality has the most canines in the state.

New figures show the local hound haven has 35,654 registered tail waggers, with 5629 in Surf Coast and 576 in Borough of Queenscliffe.

Geelong’s favourite breeds are Maltese and Jack Russell terrirers, followed by Labradors.

Surf Coast prefers Labradors, border collies and kelpies, while Labradors, Jack Russells and Maltese are popular at Queenscliff.

Double Take thought bitzers would have topped the list.

THE MYSTERIES of Aussie Rules are spreading far and wide through subscription television channels like ESPN. A columnist for UK’s The Independent newspaper stumbled across the Geelong-Adelaide NAB Cup game recently and was stumped by some rules and references.

Footy was “utterly incomprehensible to the vast majority of the world’s population” and his “first impression was that, ironically, there didn’t appear to be many rules”.

Stevie J’s half-time chat with commentators further mystified our correspondent, particularly the relevation his teammates had voted him the Cat most likely to Google himself.

But the “performance of the brilliantly-named Geelong new boy Nakia Cockatoo” really made our

scribe a convert.

Seems it set the cat among the, ahem, cockies.

THE VICTORIAN Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation’s “knowledge exchange event” at the Geelong Arena on Tuesday sounds like a sober affair.

The blurb for the free event for industry members and council representatives said “the session” would include presentations on gambling, liquor and related topics.

However, the Independent understands it’s an alcohol-free event…

The RISKS from striking an honour in the name of the living became apparent - again - in Geelong this week.

In the latest case, Geelong Cricket Association will have to recast its Ron Cations Medal for player of the year after its namesake pleaded guilty to stealing over $25,000 from his club at Teesdale.

The scandal followed an outcry around a decade ago over the naming of North Geelong’s De Stefano Dve. The honouring of former mayor Frank De Stefano seemed innocuous enough - until he was jailed for ripping millions of dollars off clients of his former accountancy firm.

Maybe the best advice is that such Geelong honours should become posthumous.

After all, dead men (and women) don’t lie - and they definitely don’t steal, either.

Protest targets trawler as science backs catch

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN PROTESTERS will rally against a controversial Geelong-based floating fishing factory this weekend despite Federal Government releasing scientific evidence that its operations are sustainable.

Victoria Marine Animal Defenders (VMAD) has organised the protest for 11am Sunday at Eastern Beach.

The Stop the Trawler protest will ask the Government to ban Seafish Tasmania’s 90- metre trawler.

A VMAD Facebook post publicising the protest said the trawler would

“decimate“ fish stocks and threaten marine food sources “only just making a comeback in population”.

“In addition, the by-catch of the trawler will be dolphins, seals and collateral damage to non-targeted fish species. Hundreds if not thousands of lives will be lost to the Geelong Star super trawler.”

The vessel left Cape Town, South Africa, en route to Geelong yesterday.

The Independent reported three weeks ago that the 3181-tonne trawler would be based in Geelong to fish for a 16,500-tonne quota of mackeral

and redbait in a small pelagic fishery (SPF) three kilometres offshore and stretching from Queensland to Perth.

The trawler has a crew of 34 and a dozen shore-based jobs in provisioning and transport.

Agriculture parliamentary secretary Senator Richard Colbeck released scientific findings that the fishery was sustainable.

“The results released today confirm earlier work undertaken previously in the SPF that the eastern jack mackerel stock is in a very healthy state,” he said.

“(This) follows the release of more science from the CSIRO earlier this year which found that tuna, seals and penguins are not dependent on SPF target species for their diet. Another recent scientific report found that localised depletion is unlikely as the SPF target species are highly mobile and local areas replenish quickly.”

The report said the size of the adult spawning stock was around 157,000 tonnes, considered large enough to enable a “modest” commercial catch to be taken without adverse effects.

Green power bid viability risk

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN A COMPANY investigating geothermal energy technology in the Geelong region could fold after writing down its assets by a further $2.15 million.

Greenearth Energy said it now needed to raise $2.4 million over the next year to remain viable.

The company has been investigating potential for fracking technology to tap underground

heat near Angelsea for power generation.

The write-down followed Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) questioning the ASX-listed company’s 2014 financial report.

ASIC said it welcomed Greenearth’s subsequent $2.15 million “impairment charge“ against its geothermal operations.

“We questioned the company

on the carrying value of its exploration and evaluation assets for its geothermal operations.

“These operations had been affected by a Victorian Government moratorium on hydraulic fracturing and well activity, the withdrawal of funding by the Victorian Government and an unsuccessful grant application to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency.

In its half-yearly report,

Greenearth Energy said it incurred a net loss for the half year of $3.9 million, up from $1.08 million in 2013.

“The directors have determined that to maintain and grow operations there is likely to be a net cash requirement of $2.4 million over the coming 12 months.

“A failure to raise capital or obtain other finance would raise significant doubt over the company’s ability to continue as

a going concern.”

In his report, Greenearth chairman Robert Annells, also chair of Lakes Oil, said the company’s flagship Geelong Geothermal Power Project had experienced funding setbacks.

Australian Renewable Energy Agency had shown no interest in providing funding and the Victorian Government had terminated its $25 million commitment for

the project, Mr Annels said.

“Although the group retains its interests in the project, we have suspended all work and do not intend to direct significant funds towards the project until further notice.

“With the Victorian Government’s current ban on hydraulic fracturing, the outlook for geothermal industry operations in Victoria remains slow.”

Local crime ‘up 30% from 2010’ CRIMINAL offences across Geelong have soared almost 30 per cent in the past four years, according to new crime figures released yesterday.

Greater Geelong recorded the most offences, up from 3597 to 3919, but battler suburbs Whittington and Corio had the largest percentage increases.

Whittington offences jumped 50 per cent from 1314 to 1980, with Corio’s crime up almost 35 per cent as the number of offences rose from 2927 to 3941.

Greater Geelong’s crime rate last year was up 10 per cent on 2013, while Surf Coast’s increased 16.5 per cent.

A breakdown of crime committed in Geelong showed reports of family incidents increased from 1351 in 2010 to 2841 last year. The rise was similar to the previous year, which authorities attributed to increased reporting.

Vehicle theft reports totalled 799 last year, up on 2013’s 649 and and 2010’s 559.

Oil profits down

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN THE INVESTMENT partner in Geelong’s oil refinery has announced a 13.7 per cent drop in revenue.

Vitol Group holds a 40 per cent stake in Viva Energy, buyer of Shell’s refinery and its downstream assets.

Vitol, the world’s largest independent energy trader, said revenue fell to $270 billion for 2014.

But the acquisition of the Geelong refinery and Shell’s downstream business was marked as a highlight in a “demanding” year, according to group president Ian Taylor.

The news comes as Viva Energy welcomes Thys Heyns as its new refining general manager.

Mr Heyns said he was keen to settle down in Geelong after 22 years of international work and travel.

“The Viva Energy opportunity presented itself at the right time. It is a business that I am passionate about and where I believe I am in a position to add value.”

Legal threat for dog grievance

By NOEL MURPHY CITY Hall has threatened to sue a woman for defamation over complaints about a staffer she tried to help find an unclaimed dog microchipped with her name.

The woman, who spoke on condition of anonymity, had complained about the unnamed City officer on Facebook.

Harwood Andrews lawyers then served her with a warning,

claiming her post could “harm the council’s reputation and/or irreparably damage the officer’s personal reputation”.

The woman said the officer phoned her about the dog whose microchipping paperwork included her contact details.

“When I asked for the chip number to try to help get the animal back to its rightful owner I was told that because I had told (the officer) I was not the owner

no details could be given. This seems a ridiculous attitude, since they obviously have no other number to contact.

“The (officer) who phoned me clearly had no intention of trying to find the correct owner.

And, frankly, the attitude I was given when offering to check our sale records to see if I could help reunite dog and owner made me fear for this animal’s life.“ The woman posted on Face-

book that anyone who had lost a dog should phone the city’s dog catcher and included a contact number.

Harwood Andrews wrote that it was instructed the woman had “yelled profanities at the officer and made disparaging remarks both about her ability to do her job and about her personally”.

It claimed she made further disparaging remarks on Facebook and said the officer received

LIQUIDITY and debt risks are increasing at Geelong’s council, according to a Victorian Auditor General report.

The report said Geelong was among Victorian councils moving from low to medium risk ratings.

“Local councils continue to face the challenges of delivering quality services to their community, maintaining their existing assets and funding future capital works,” Auditor General Mr John Doyle said.

“To do this effectively, local councils will need to effectively prioritise spending and determine sustainable rates for services provided within the (state) government’s proposed rate capping policy.

“Regional city councils have a higher reliance on government grants to fund operations and their capital works programs. Conversely, large and regional councils continue to have the highest indebtedness.”

“These local councils have limited discretionary revenue options and should continue to actively manage and monitor their debt.“ A City Hall spokesperson said the report highlighted the difficulties councils faced in “managing growth and dealing with demand for new assets”.

COTTON On has denied staff face the sack for failing to “keep it real” or be “fun”.

Bus users cop PTV ‘contempt’

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN BUS USERS have been treated with “contempt” in consultations on Geelong timetable changes, according to a participant.

Newcomb’s Yvonne Sardeson called the information sessions badly organised.

The initial sessions were in the lead-up to Christmas but Public Transport Victoria (PTV) extended them after representations from local MPs, she said.

Ms Sardeson said she had written to PTV to express her concern about the latest session at Geelong Railway Station on 11 March.

The meeting was advertised for a conference room but when attendees arrived at 4.30pm they were told the room was not booked, she said.

“The PTV staff came around

at 4.40pm and told the waiting crowd the sessions were going to be held in the forecourt area of the station.

“This was greeted with astonishment, that anyone thought an information session could be held where buses pull in and idle while passengers get off, trains were leaving the platforms and the station announcements were happening.

“The noise level was horrendous.”

Ms Sardeson said no seats were available around the session’s information easels, which kept collapsing in the wind.

“Most of the people present felt frustrated at being unable to contribute to the session let alone hear what was being said.”

A PTV spokesperson said the information session was planned

for the station’s forecourt to allow station users to participate.

A small group at the session was “difficult” but the sessions successfully gathered useful feedback, the spokesperson said.

Issues raised included access to popular destinations and walking distance to local bus stops.

“PTV is now assessing all of this feedback to look at where we can incorporate this into the

final bus network and we will let the community know in the coming weeks what changes will be made,” the spokesperson said.

Elderly residents have expressed concerns about the changes, saying loss of bus stops and subsequent long walks to catch buses could force them to sell their homes to move closer to public transport.

“The waves being arms of comfort, and the current a heartbeat. Constantly moving, carressing her entire being.

“She could only dream of such love, such perfection, such freedom, within herself, by herself. As the outside world was not at an intellectual level to understand.”

So says artist Mark Taylor of CLAP - Meataxe Design, who recently completed a multistorey masterpiece at North Geelong art hub Powerhouse, which has transformed a disused fomer power station.

The job took him 17 days of sunrise-tosunset toil after Powerhouse operator Ian Ballis persuaded him to paint the image.

“I wanted to paint a female with beauty and heart in it. I enjoyed every minute,“ Mr Taylor said.

“It’s been such an honour and pleasure in every way to have the chance to be part of such a great piece of history.”

GEELONG medical expertise will go on the world stage at an international conference this month.

Geelong surgeon Rafael Acosta Rojas will make a presentation on reconstructive microsurgery and hand surgery at the 2015 World Microsurgery Congress in Mumbai, India.

“It’s an honour to be invited to speak at such a prestigious event,” Mr Acosta Rojas said.

“I’m looking forward to meeting experts from around the world and sharing our expertise from Geelong.”

“Latest developments in microsurgery mean we can now treat patients who have limbs or other body parts amputated. Under certain circumstances, the amputated parts can be re-attached or another body part can be replanted in the place of one lost, for example, a big toe replacing a lost or damaged thumb.”

Mr Acosta Rojas also works with GPs throughout Victoria to provide patients with the latest techniques and procedures in microsurgery of the hand.

A senior clinical lecturer at Deakin University, he was formerly a microsurgical unit chief at Sweden’s Uppsala University Hospital.

Convicts’ hidden pier without peer Regulator targets local charities

By NOEL MURPHY FEW KNOW of the convict-built pier holding pride of place of Geelong’s waterfront.

That’s probably because it’s long been hidden below the surface of Eastern Pier’s breakwater lane, alongside Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

But it will soon to be retained for posterity with the name Stony Pier Lane.

Stony Pier, or Queen’s Wharf as it was also called, has served for many years through Geelong’s history, hosting sailing craft, cutters, whaleboats and more.

After its construction from 1840 to 1843 the pier hosted a portable timber customs shed.

Extended with timber in 1847, the pier was known as Customs House Wharf by the mid-1850s

The stone origins remain beneath the extended breakwater now familiar to yachties.

Heritage Victoria says the pier is historically significant for its association with the period of first permanent non-indigenous settlement in Victoria and with early

pastoralists. “Eastern Pier is a surviving example of the use of convict labour to carry out public works in Victoria in the early years of settlement and is a rare documented example of a public site where assisted immigrants were employed,� its citation states.

A GEELONG charity has had its charitable status revoked and five others have until 30 March to avoid the same fate.

Australian Charities and Notfor-profits Commission (ACNC) this month published lists of charities failing to fulfil their legal obligations.

Commissioner Susan Pascoe said the commission took a proportional approach to compliance activity while maintaining a commitment to protecting public trust and confidence in the sector. “Revocation of charity status is reserved for the most serious of

cases,� she said. “We prefer to educate charities and support them to improve where appropriate. “However, we’ll act firmly and quickly where there’s evidence of serious mismanagement or misappropriation, a serious, persistent or deliberate breach of the ACNC Act, or where vulnerable people or significant charitable assets are at risk.�

The ACNC has received over 1300 complaints against charities since it was established over two years ago.

Grovedale Community Centre had its charitable status revoked

from 19 January after its 2013 annual information statement fell 11 months overdue.

Norlane Baptist Church, Gateway Christian Care Trust, Geelong Disabled and Disadvantaged Community Participation, Ross Bush Memorial Foundation and the Ukrainian Autocephalic Orthodox Church were threatened with revocation.

The ACNC said the charities were among 1400 “double defaulters� that had until 30 March to submit annual information statements. Another 7000 could have their charity status revoked soon.

The Independent reported earlier this month that City Hall had rebuffed her call for council contributions to a federal fund for improving mobile phone coverage.

“I’m disappointed the City of Greater Geelong has washed its hands on any responsibility to help deliver better mobile phone coverage across our region,” Ms Henderson said this week.

black spots, such as those in Armstrong Creek and Ocean Grove, is one which the City of Greater Geelong needs to tackle.

“It is an issue it can do something about and should so something about.”

Ms Henderson said 17 councils in Victoria had already offered in-principle support for contributing to the $100 million federal mobile black spot fund.

“The reality is that federal money alone will only go so far.

So again I call on the City of Greater Geelong to make a cocontribution to the fund.

“It’s so important that all levels of government work together

and step up to provide better communications infrastructure where it’s most needed.”

Ms Henderson continued her battle with Telstra and other telecommunications companies over the issue, saying their efforts to date were “not good enough”.

City Hall maintained that telecommunications was not a local government responsibility.

A spokesperson last week said community master planning of the Armstrong Creek growth area would ensure infrastructure provision maintained pace with demand growth.

The City had nothing further to add, the spokesperson said.

They confirmed the MasterChef judge’s participation on Monday, six days before the event.

By JOHN VAN KLAVEREN ORGANISING a rock concert is an unsual response to receiving a devastating diagnosis of motor neurone disease (MND).

But that’s just what Highton’s Jen Simko and husband Peter have done as a positive way of dealing with negative news. “We love live music and concerts and this just grew from a small idea but we have had such great support,� Ms Simko said.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has organised a support worker for her for the entire evening as well as helping with equipment like neck and chin supports and a voice amplifier to overcome MND-related difficulties with speaking.

A former nurse with Barwon Health, Ms Simko said her medical background had helped her deal with the diagnosis.

But the random nature of the terminal disease without a known cause or cure is what the Simkos rail against the most.

And being positive in the face of such rare yet mindless selection was their best way of dealing with it, they believed. “There's no point moping, because you are just wasting time,�

Ms Simko said simply. “The positive way she has dealt with this has made it a lot easier on the rest of us,� Mr Simko affirmed. “She worries more about others and not herself.�

Geelong recycling breakthrough

Alloys cracked BILLIONS of dollars and up to 500 million tonnes of aircraft aluminium could be saved with a Geelong breakthrough in recycling process.

Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials could also help achieve “major“ energy savings to curb aluminium smelters’ use of fossil fuels.

The aluminium recycling process could be applied to 200,000 aircraft in service around the world, retaining valuable metal otherwise consigned to waste.

The Deakin researchers used copper rather than steel rollers in the recycling process to crack an aluminium alloy conundrum.

“Our technology could lead to the recycling of around 500,000 tonnes of aircraft aluminium annually,” said metallurgist Dr Thomas Dorin.

“It could save the airline industry and others that use aluminium alloys millions of dollars as well as achieve major energy savings and reduce the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.”

About 70,000 tonnes of pure aluminium is recycled in Australia annually but alloys are difficult to recycle due to their impurities.

“This new aluminium alloy recycling process is cheaper and simpler than any existing process, achieving the final product in

only one step,“ Dr Dorin said.

“And it results in reduced impurities, improved corrosion resistance and toughness, allowing the alloy to be reused for similar applications.

“It will also work for other aluminium alloys, such as those used in the automotive, construction, marine or sports industries.”

Dr Dorin said the process could make the cost of dismantling airplanes for recycling worth the effort compared to the cost of smelting new alloys.

Deakin is seeking industry partners to further develop the technology.

Letters On Silvers’ side I HAVE been a big fan of all circuses in Victoria and have travelled far to see them, including once to Queensland to see the Moscow circus.

Silvers Circus is coming to Geelong over Easter and the school holidays.

I have been following Silvers for 44 years, which includes going away to see its shows in Tasmania, Adelaide and all around Melbourne. I must have been to over 100 shows.

I have made lots of friends with Silvers Circus and seen a lot of my friends attend its shows.

I used to be a good friend of Tommy Hanlon Jnr, who used to be on TV before joining Silvers.

The issue is whether the change now is really calamitous or human-induced or even warming now that carbon dioxide (CO2) has parted company with temperature, which is a mysterious anomaly since Mr Bartlett describes so well how CO2 causes warming.

Mr Bartlett might be happy with unanswered questions about climate change but others want a more-unambiguous cause-and-effect understanding.

Mr Bartlett he calls them stupid – maybe they just like consistent science.

The studies raise particular concerns about the validity of fluoridation. There is now plenty of evidence showing it causes hypothyroidism.

From my understanding, an under-active thyroid can lead to weight gain. Does this suggest fluoridation contributes to obesity?

Fluoridation promoters will remain silent in defence of this outdated practice and refuse to consider evidence of harm simply because they are more interested in protecting their credibility.

Do doubt who’s cocksure DON BARTLETT asked “which part of the science that predicts calamitous human-induced warming do they (deniers) not accept?” Global warmists have a long history of failed predictions. The “science” Mr Bartlett referred to is computer models that consistently predict impending catastrophe because they are programmed that CO2 causes significant global warming, which is a classic circular argument.

Mr Bartlett asked whether “(deniers) concede that CO2 has been increasing in the atmosphere”.

Well, the overwhelming consensus among sceptics is that CO2 is indeed increasing.

And then, to paraphrase Mr Bartlett, he said deniers don’t believe in the greenhouse effect. This was untrue.

The noble sceptic I DO NOT disagree with Mr Saclier’s definition of sceptic (Letters, 13 March).

What I dispute is that he is one.

Considering scientists’ warnings of catastrophic consequences if we do nothing, would sceptics who “keep on asking questions“ also call to stop or delay action to mitigate climate change?

After presenting a noble picture of sceptics, Mr Saclier invited us to accept him as such not by sceptical enquiry but by pointing the finger with hints of conspiracies. If deniers want to be regarded as genuine sceptics they must do much better than this.

Responding to Don Bartlett’s call would be a good start. Please tell us which part of the science is wrong.

It should not be too difficult – physics explained the greenhouse effect over 120 years ago.

Watts your problem UNFORTUNATELY global warming has not ceased, even if some, like P Rees (Letters, 13 March), think temperatures may have plateaued.

NASA climatologists have measured that the planet absorbs .58 watts per square metre more of sunlight than it radiates away. This energy imbalance is now locked in for most likely thousands of years because of the long persistence time of CO2 in the atmosphere.

It is equivalent to about 65,000 Loy Yang power stations pumping all their energy into the earth as heat 24 hours every day. This imbalance will rise as greenhouse gases rise.

This energy must go somewhere. We now have it permanently.

The oceans a better indicator of global warming than the atmosphere because they absorb about 90 per cent of the Sun’s energy. It is not surprising then that the heat content of the oceans has been steadily rising without sign of any pause.

It is also highly probable atmospheric temperatures will catch up.

So climate change from anthropogenic greenhouse gases is essentially irreversible. This is why the situation is so urgent.

The hope is that we will be able to manage if we can hold temperature rises below 2C by being essentially carbon free by mid-century.

ABBA’s gold to glitter in show IT’S BEEN almost 33 years since ABBA broke up but the world still can’t get enough of the Swedish pop sensations, in one form or another.

Stage productions, movies and tribute shows have all paid testament to the enduring popularity of the band’s hits, anthems and let’s face it – the soap opera of the stars’ lives.

Australia welcomed Gold, the Ultimate ABBA Show last year for its New Arrival Tour, performing to sold-out houses and playing to more than 10,000 people across the country.

The show returns to Geelong in April with a new concert pro-

duction celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 1975 release of ABBA’s self-titled album.

Featuring the hits Mamma Mia, SOS, I Do, I Do, I Do and the ode to Australia, Bang a Boomerang, the release solidified the group’s standing internationally.

The opening track, Mamma Mia, was released as a standalone single in Australia because of the country’s adoration of the Swede superstars.

Their local popularity put such pressure on ABBA’s record label and management that eventually the track was lifted as a single in September 1975 – and rocketed straight to the top of the

Australian singles charts where it remained for 10 weeks.

The album, of course, sold 11 times platinum.

The new tribute show features internationally recognised ABBA performers Kathleen Maloney, as Agnetha, and Kirsten Elliott, Anna-Frid, who both commanded attention and respect in their performances on last year’s tour.

The tour will present a chance to bring out Geelong’s dancing queens along with the flares and platform shoes in a two-hour concert production.

Gold, the Ultimate ABBA Show plays Geelong Performing Arts Centre’s Playhouse threatre on 18 April.

Headless hero of Banjo lyrics

By NOEL MURPHY AUSTRALIA’S unofficial national anthem, Waltzing Matilda, has always had its dark side – police pursing a sheep duffing swaggie to a watery death.

But the truth could be even more sinister.

Banjo Paterson’s co-writer, Christina Macpherson, borrowed the tune to The Craigielee March after hearing it at the Warrnambool races but the orgins of the lyrics, long tied to the 1894 shearers strike, have now been linked to a macabre discovery.

Melbourne barrister Benjamin Lindner has unearthed the story of Samuel Hoffmeister, a radical shearer widely believed the inspiration for Paterson’s anthem and who died in suspicious circumstances in western Queensland.

Lindner recently discovered that Hoffmeister, who one inquiry

declared committed suicide, was buried headless at a secret location.

His death in a bush camp near Kynuna, possibly from shooting himself as police closed in, followed a violent night when a gang of shearers burned down Dagworth Station’s shearing shed after a gun battle with its protectors.

Linder said a play, The Man They Call The Banjo, to be staged next month at Little River then Drysdale, inspired his reasearch.

“I was immediately attracted to the legal aspect,” Lindner said.

“After reading transcripts of the inquests into the death of Samuel Hoffmeister and then the woolshed fire, it was apparent that the police investigation was inadequate.”

Lindner’s finding highlighted the brutality of the near-civil war

of 1894 while reopening speculation about Hoffmeister’s death and the inspiration for Waltzing Matilda, written while Paterson was a guest at Dagworth Station not long after the woolshed arson and Hoffmeister’s apparent suicide.

Together, Lindner’s research and Felix Meagher’s play present startling, unfamiliar perspectives on Waltzing Matilda.

Meagher noted that many of those involved in the song’s earliest versions said little about it, including Paterson.

“They clearly have not wanted the story to be told,” he said.

“It becomes a bit of a mystery and the more mystery there is the more you want to know.”

The Mt Rothwell performances of The Man They Call The Banjo are on 17 and 18 April and at Drysdale’s Potato Shed on 2 May.

By PETER ANDERSON BMW’S second-generation X3 has firmly cemented itself in BMW’s expansive range.

The first attempt at a mid-sizer was a bit of a dud to look at and not particularly brilliant to drive.

The second cleared up both of those problems, and got a bit bigger into the bargain.

The diesel X3s are cracking cars - smooth, fast and quiet.

There’s a bit of a secret in the range that some might skip over - the 28i.

It’s a big car for a 2.0-litre four and it doesn’t look particularly promising until you see the power figures.

We spent a week exploring the promise.

The X3 range starts at $60,675 for the 20i petrol, rising to $64,400 for the 20d 2.0-litre diesel and on to the $77,400 30d.

In Australia, all X3s are xDrive BMW-speak for all-wheel drive.

Our 28i test car in its base form weighed in at $72,930.

Standard is dual-zone climatecontrol, leather interior, an upspec HiFi sound system, sat-nav, cameras with 360-degree view, BMW’s complicated cargo system, electric front seats, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, bi-xenon headlights with washers, auto-wipers and headlights, hill descent control and heated electric folding mirrors.

MV 09 VOLVO V70 T6 AWD WAGON ROOMY: Bavaria’s mid-size SUV makes you wonder why you need an X5. tallic paint ($1900), panorama glass sunroof ($3000), driving assistant ($900), adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist ($3680), head-up display ($2000), ConnectedDrive Freedom ($1200).

The M Sport package ($2900) adds 19-inch wheels, sports suspension, M steering wheel and other bits and pieces, variable steering, and an aero package.

It’s a pity two of the best options - the LED headlights and the HUD - are so pricey because they’re both extremely useful.

In M Sport package trim with the big 19-inch wheels, the X3 looks the business.

It is very SUV-like, with a bluff front end, slabby butcreased sides and an X5-alike rear-end. Like the current X5, it’s striking rather than pretty, but well-proportioned without look-

ing too high.

Muscular was a word used often in its presence, partly because of its lower stance and aero pack.

The interior is huge, with room for five adults who will leave happy.

There’s plenty of headroom for front and rear passengers and if you want to give them the almost-convertible feel, the huge optional panoramic sunroof allows in a ton of light.

Given its size, it’s hard to see why you’d need an X5 unless you’re after the brilliant 50d or V8.

There’s tons of room, it’s bigger (but yes, more expensive) than an Audi Q5 and has a lot of road presence.

On top of that, it’s a decent amount of fun, even five-up with a boot full of gear.

Bay anglers nab flatties, snapper ANGLERS made the most of calm conditions last week to catch a mix of fish.

Corio Bay anglers banked excellent flathead while casting soft plastics rigged on a heavy jig heads. Some of the flatties reached 50cm, with anglers reporting catches of five or more fish over 40cm while fishing land-based.

The grammar school lagoon was hot for flathead anglers whether on shore or in kayaks, while also producing chunky pinkies to 40cm.

The outer-harbour off Clifton Springs remained a solid option for squid, especially when light wind allowed slow drifts over productive grass beds.

Three to five metres of water was best, with jigs such as Shimano Sephia 14T in size 2.5 taking baglimit captures.

Snapper anglers had limited success off Clifton Springs, with the average size of the fish down.

A few anglers managed snapper to 4kg at dawn and dusk on fresh squid and silver whiting.

I fished the area on Thursday night when the water temperature was still around 21C, so good snapper fishing should continue for at least the next month.

Swan Bay produced mixed bags. Whiting to 42cm were the main drawcard and taken in great numbers on tenderized squid.

Gummy shark were taken from the main channel in the evenings, as well as snapper to 2kg.

Squid were holding on the weed beds out the front of Swan Bay, making for a handy bait supply.

Kingfish went from strength to strength, with large schools of surface-feeding kingfish reported all the way from Barwon Heads through to Bancoora on Saturday morning.

The only trouble was keeping up with the fastmoving schools.

Pulling ahead and casting metal lures or plastics into the path of the surface commotion was most productive.

Daniel Baden was one of the lucky anglers on the water at the time, boating kingfish to 65cm as well as dropping some much larger specimens.

Tony Barkachi ventured down past Lorne with his sights set on Australian salmon. He landed two exceptional fish to 84cm at Artillery Rocks and noted other anglers catching salmon from most rock platforms and Lorne Pier.

Rami Nihat headed up the freeway in search of mulloway in the Docklands area. Baiting up with live mullet, he caught and released a well-conditioned mulloway of 78cm and 3.7kg.

Mulloway seem to be popping up all over the place at the moment, with good numbers of fish landed from the mouth of the Werribee River and a little closer to home in the Barwon River.

Tuna and kingfish were caught in great numbers at Port Fairy. Unlike the fish closer to the Surf Coast, the kings averaged 6kg and smashed larger stick-bait lures, while the 20kg tuna responded well to trolled lures such as X-Rap 20 & 30s and UV skirted lures.

The freshwater scene was quiet, with most anglers focused on the salt.

But West Barwon Reservoir produced rainbows to 1kg on Tassie Devils and Bobbin Spoons cast from the rock wall.

Lake Purrumbete had good numbers of brown trout for anglers trolling down deep with cow bells or Ford Fenders.

The next week’s settled weather should be good for kingfish on jigs or metal lures and whiting between St Leonards and Swan Bay. Freshwater anglers should keep persisting with Lake Purrumbete.

Winter Reserve will be the venue for this game and, while City has been brave this season, St Joseph’s look to have too much firepower with bat and ball and should win.

In division two, the three bottom-ranked teams defeated the three top ranked teams last week to turn the race for this season’s flag on its head.

Thomson’s top order failed to fire, although its lower order managed to salvage a decent score of 170.

St Peter’s batted steadily on Sunday to survive some nervous moments for an eight-wicket win.

Thomson will now play Highton at Marshall, the Heat having thrashed Modewarre last week in less than a day.

That leaves Marshall to take on St Peter’s at Jarvis Oval.

The Bears returned to form last week with a huge 155-run victory over Torquay, which would be shattered to see such a promising season end so abruptly.

St Peter’s looks to be in great form and will go in as favourite but the youthful Marshall side could well provide an upset.

In division three, two mouth-watering semi-finals feature all four sides boasting genuine claims to the flag.

Shelford will play Teesdale at Winchelsea after the latter went down to Inverleigh last week. Teesdale should still have enough match-winners to be a real chance here, although Shelford will rightly start favourite.

The other semi will be between the experienced Meredith and the young guns from Inverleigh.

Lethbridge will be the venue for this one, with Inverleigh looking to have the goods.

Geelong Warrior women seek recruits

By JOSIP ZILIC NORTH Geelong Warriors has been the local benchmark in producing talented male soccer players for years.

The achievements of ex-Warriors have even extended to elite international level, with Matthew Spiranovic lifting the 2015 Asian Cup in the Socceroos’ successful campaign last month.

But another quiet achiever at the club is also reaching new heights in one of Australia’s toughest and best football competitions.

The Warriors women’s teams have provided the football landscape with some exceptional talent, producing Premier League Championship elite youth squad members, Victorian state representatives and even W-league

players such as Laura Spiranovic.

The Warriors’ seniors and reserves women’s squads play at Victoria’s division one level but have their eyes set on the top rung - premier league.

“Challenging for the first spot is the minimum I’m aiming for in 2015,” said Warriors midfielder Renee Zebic, a former premier league player.

The club has recruited AFC Blicensed coach Ivan Jurinovic, who is investing his time to develop the talent while helping the club elevate the region’s standing in women’s football, including junior development.

Warriors player and former premier league goalkeeper Katie Neville said North Geelong had plenty of female talent.

“The team’s hunger for promotion to the premier league is a driving force

for this season and we’re really keen to help Geelong’s female soccer players get recognised for their talent,” she said.

The Warriors’ reserves and senior teams are seeking extra players for 2015.

“We have a number of talented players and we know Geelong still has more to offer,” said team manager Jess Milinkovic.

“We want to put Geelong women’s football on the map and encourage all who would like to be a part of the journey to get in contact with us.”

NORTH Geelong Warriors is back into National Premier League action this Saturday, away against Hume City.

Both teams will take some scoring confidence into the match after coming away from their Westfield FFA Cup round four clashes with convincing five-goal wins.

Hume managed to put away Riversdale FC 5-0, while North Geelong notched up its second 6-1 win of the year when it played Manningham United Blues.

The Blues proved a determined combatant, taking up the fight to their more-fancied opponents in the first half.

A fortunate own goal opened the account for North Geelong but Manningham quickly responded moments later to put the teams at 1-1 by the interval.

The half-time break must have sparked the Warriors into action.

Their dominance came into play, with Vito Cichello providing the spark on 53 minutes when he rounded his opponent and put the ball away in a oneon-one with the keeper.

Manningham continued to provide resistance but was unable to create further pressure on North Geelong.

With the match approaching the closing stages, Reardo Luka, who had returned to full fitness after a pre-season shoulder injury, stepped up to finish cleanly and take the match to 3-1.

An avalanche of goals quickly followed as Manningham capitulated while trying to get a counter goal.

Nikola Jurkovic, Tomislav Trbuhovic and Milan Sekulic all scored within a minute of each other to blow the score out to 6-1.

Coach Micky Colina was delighted.

“It’s the first time the club has gone past this round for some years now,” he said.

“It was good to get a range of scorers on the sheet, too, especially with the three forced changes due to injury with Mark Paleka, Robbie Zadworny and Nathan Long all missing action.”

The changes provided Colina with an insight into players waiting in the wings as the season progresses and what to consider for Saturday’s Hume clash at ABD Stadium, in Valley Park, Broadmeadows.

Kick-off is 7pm.
