THE future of tourism on the Southern Downs is set to be discussed at a major public meeting at the Warwick Town Hall tonight from 5.30pm.

The meeting has been called by Warwick Tourism and Events chairperson Majella Kahler with the support of the Warwick Chamber of Commerce.

Ms Kahler said it was important that anyone who had an interest in tourism and events across the Southern Downs came along.

“I would like to invite all members of the community to an information session on the Tourism Transition Report that was recently adopted by Southern Downs Regional Council,” she said.

“I would encourage all members of the community to come along and join in the discussions regarding the future of tourism in our shire.

Mayor Peter Blundell, CEO David Keenan and our elected representatives have all been invited.”

The meeting follows the council’s resolution in February to form one tourism body across the region.

Ms Kahler said while the event was being held in Warwick she said interested parties from Stanthorpe, Killarney, Allora and across the

region were more than welcome to come along and have their say on the future of tourism in the region.

“Despite reassurances from the mayor regarding the future of events in the region, the funding model adopted post July 2016 will see insufficient funds and levels of staff available to ensure the viability of existing events and the development of new events,” she said.

“For many years, Warwick Tourism and Events has assisted a large number of local and external organisations to create quality events in the region. These events range from small scale charity events to major national events with the capacity to inject hundreds of thousands of dollars into the local community.

“The operation of the visitor information centres will see the adoption of a threetier membership/partnership structure. Hours of operation and governance will be managed by Destination Southern Downs with a uniform approach across the shire.”

She said the information session was the community’s chance to be informed about the TTG report and to discuss how to move forward as a community to ensure that the future of tourism and events in the Southern Downs was secure.

THE Stanthorpe Red Cross will celebrate Red Cross Calling by holding a soup and slice light lunch at St Pauls Anglican Church.

The event will be held from 11am on Wednesday 25 March.

In 2014, Australian Red Cross celebrated 100 years of service, and the vital work is still as crucial as ever.

This is the Stanthorpe Red Cross Branch’s sixth Red Cross Calling morning tea.

The Stanthorpe and District Communities are invited to join Red Cross members for a delicious light lunch.

THE famous Dungaree Recruitment March from Warwick to Brisbane 100 years ago will be remembered later this year - with a little help from the Military Brotherhood Motorcycle Club.

Members of the club met with Southern Downs Regional Council this week to discuss their Dungaree Re-Enactment Run which is planned for the end of the year.

Mayor Peter Blundell, who has a long-held interest in motorbikes and riding, said he gladly accepted an invitation to conduct an official sendoff for the riders on 29 November.

“Today a group of the riders will come to council chambers to outline their plans for the reenactment,” he said.

“The event is a wonderful way to commemorate the centenary of Anzac with riders acknowledging the famous Dungaree Recruitment March from Warwick to Brisbane which occurred in late November 1915.

“The Dungarees Recruitment March was the only ‘snow ball’ march in Queensland during the First World War.” The route left Warwick for Allora, Clifton, Cambooya, Wyreema and onto Toowoomba and then to Helidon to the Lockyer Valley.

“The march then travelled through to Ipswich and Brisbane via Rosewood to Brisbane,” Cr Blundell said.

HOT on the heels of last week’s Goomburra Valley Coal Mine meeting at Allora comes a visit to Stanthorpe of the man leading the campaign against coal seam gas mining.

Lock the Gate president and founder Drew Hutton will be in town next week.

Mr Hutton will be guest speaker at the Southern Downs Greens’ Information and Community Discussion Night on Thursday 26 March from 5.30pm at the Stanthorpe CWA. The campaigner has been successful in bringing farmers and other rural residents together with environmentalists in a powerful coalition to stop irresponsible mining of coal and coal seam gas.

The public meeting aims to encourage the general public to actively participate in the political process by discussing the issues that affect them and their communities.

After holding similar sessions all over the electorate, the branch plans to develop policies based on these conversations which will then be presented and reviewed by each community in the next part of the process.

The evening will start with a brief talk by Elizabeth Ure, The Greens candidate in the recent state election.

She will give a brief overview of The Greens’ guiding principles and its major policies.

Stanthorpe police report Phone finder faces charges A 50-YEAR-OLD Dalcouth man was charged with stealing after availing himself of a mobile phone which had been inadvertently dropped on the driveway of a Stanthorpe Service Station last Wednesday, according to Stanthorpe police.

Senior Seargeant Mark Island said it would be alleged that the “finder of the property made no attempt to hand in the found property nor any attempt to locate the owner”.

Intoxicated youth in brawl ABOUT 10.30pm Friday night, police responded to an assault that had occurred in Railway Street, Stanthorpe, where an 18-year-old male had been set upon and punched by two juvenile male offenders, with the offenders fleeing the scene prior to police arrival.

“The juvenile offenders, both intoxicated, were later located in the CBD allegedly trying to incite another fight. Both are expected to be charged later in the week,” Senior Sergeant Mark Island said.

Lucky escape after crash A 24-YEAR-OLD man was lucky to escape serious injury when the vehicle he was driving left the road and collided with a tree at 9pm Sunday evening in Nundubbermere Road, Broadwater.

The driver told police he had allegedly lost control of the vehicle when trying to avoid a tree branch on the roadway.

Just after midnight Friday another single vehicle crash occurred at Eukey Road, Ballandean, when the vehicle a 27-year-old international visitor was driving, left the road and collided with a power pole.

“Fortunately, again, no injuries were sustained. It is believed the driver fell asleep at the wheel and he was issued an infringement accordingly,” he said.

Letters AT A recent SDR Council meeting, held in camera (behind closed doors) it was decided to continue with postal voting for council elections. This was in spite of the fact that the former Minister for Local Government (lost his seat on 31 January) was in favour of re-introducing attendance voting which is less open to corruption.

We have to ask: “Why does the SDR Council want to continue with postal voting?” They say it is cheaper, but that is not true. It has been proven that postal voting is more expensive than the other system.

At the last election votes were lost and many people didn’t receive a ballot in the post.

It has been suggested that postal voting benefits the incumbents. Is this the reason councillors want to stick with this flawed system?

It’s time for the public to awaken to how they are being misled by council and vote appropriately at next year’s election.

Jobs they squeal on top note is their priority while their uselessness is well paid for by tax and ratepayers to destroy the wealth and health of a nation.

All the while debts are never able to be met by governments and paid off, for mining damages everything in Australia while foreign countries take us to the

cleaners!

Roads, rail and health costs spend governments into debt while coal seam gas will destroy water sources all over Australia. Where were the politicians of today born? Where were they schooled? Where are their consciences? Hang their heads in shame and order them to live alongside a mining site for at least six months to earn your vote come the next elections. Local, state and federal politicians must be called to account, as are those who dump people-poisoning asbestos to maim others! It’s time!

Too many wildcards CLIMATE alarmists claim incessantly that all bad weather is caused by man’s use of hydrocarbon fuels - oils, gas and coal.

They insist that man-made carbon dioxide is the trump card in the climate game.

Their computerised models of doom assume ever-rising levels of carbon dioxide will trump all natural climate controllers.

Unfortunately for the credibility, since at least the year 2000 global temperatures have trended level despite significant increases is atmospheric carbon dioxide.

The sun is the primary source of almost all of Earth’s heat.

It is becoming increasingly clear that this gigantic heat generator, with its varying cycles and emissions, is the joker in the climate game.

In order to explain the failure of their carbon-centric forecasts, the alarmists have thrown several other wildcards into the climate game. These include heat losses into the deep oceans and unexpected variations in earth’s cover of ice, snow,

soot, particulates and volcanic dust.

Finally they have created their own friendly climate joker - data manipulation. They deal this card from the bottom of the pack onto the climate table to create artificial warming trends and heatwave “records” on demand.

Obviously there are too many jokers and wildcards in the climate game for one simple carbon-centric theory to win a forecasting game, except by cheating or chance.

This is why warmists have not won a “forecast-the-warming” game for 15 years.

The shrinking consumer dollar is thrashing around to get the best deals, and with the internet offering prices that retailers can’t match, 80 per cent of consumers are turning to the net for better deals. Young people, savvy with the everchanging technology will be doing most of their buying on the web.

Greedy landlords would rather have their shops vacant than offer reasonable rates to their renters. Rent is one of the key factors when decision time comes for a retailer to remain open or close.

No doubt Stanthorpe will see more shop closures in the future. A former town retailer made the comment, before he was forced to close due to rising costs: “One day the tumbleweeds will come down High Street.”

As more shops close the council may have to re-think their grandiose streetscape plan. It won’t be needed to attract shoppers as there will be no shops left. Maybe we will soon be able to buy a coffee on the net.

WOW events have been in high demand since they began in 2013.

AN EDUCATIONAL program on endangered species is being delivered to primary schools in the Upper Condamine Catchment of the Southern Downs region.

The program is a partnership between Amaroo Environmental Education Centre and Condamine Alliance being funded by the Commonwealth Department of Environment.

Over the past few weeks, 139 students from six schools around Warwick and Stanthorpe districts have taken part in the program.

The finale is a live wildlife display of some of the endangered species in this area to be held at the Maryvale Hall on Friday 20 March beginning at 5pm.

Steps to business success SPACES still exist for next week’s Mi Start Workshop aimed at Southern Downs residents interested in starting their own business.

Organisers are putting the finishing touches on the event to be held next week on Thursday 26 March at Warwick TAFE. “Our funding is targeted for people with a migrant background, but we find we do have the capacity to also welcome people who identify as Indigenous Australians, and some workshop places available for people of a non-migrant heritage,” explains Sue Hamlet, a

member of Mi Start Warwick organising team.

“The workshop went over very well in Toowoomba last week - I called it the ‘practice run’ for Warwick,” laughed Ms Hamlet.

A similar event was held by the Mi Start team in Toowoomba last week with more than 70 participants attending from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Budding entrepreneurs gathered to hear Helen Black from the office of State Development deliver a practical and engaging overview of the Seven Steps to Business Success. Participants

then workshopped some case studies, with the guidance of table leaders.

The program covers a range of skills and resources needed to set up a small business, and the full day is free. Lunch and morning tea is included.

NINE community noticeboards have been installed around the Southern Downs to help ensure local people are prepared during an emergency.

Installed by the Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC), the noticeboards will give residents specific and general information about disasters throughout the year and during a weather event.

Disaster Management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said the purpose of the noticeboards was to enable all community members and visitors to the region to keep up to date with warnings and communication in relation to disaster situations, updates, training and assistance.

“Each of the signs has an assigned Local Control officer who ensures the information on

the noticeboard is relevant and up-to-date,” Mr Saunders said.

“Outside of a disaster, the noticeboards can be used for general information and community groups to advertise local events and activities.

“When communities are isolated due to an event, these signs will act as an information point of truth direct from the local disaster co-ordination centre.

“We encourage residents to make themselves aware of the location of the noticeboards and become familiar in checking them for information.”

Locations include: Maryvale: Maryvale Road near the Rural Fire Brigade Shed, Mal Stacy Goomburra; outside the Goomburra Hall, Margaret Cairns Allora; PL Travers Park,

Emporium of antiques THE Stanthorpe Showgrounds are set to be transformed into a showcase or antiques and collectables from Friday to Sunday, 27-29 March.

From 5pm on 27 March Exhibition Centre at the Showgrounds will host dealers from all around the country who will combine for what is planned to be the Annual Stanthorpe Antiques and Collectables Fair.

Organised by antiques and collectables dealers Bronwyn and Keith Stringer, this event will be a great drawcard for collectors both serious and novice alike.

Traditionally the aim of a fair is to cater for all tastes and incomes, from the smallest thimble or piece of collectable pottery to a grand Victorian chest.

Prices are competitive and the range of items for sale is fantastic, enabling customers to view many dealers under one roof, instead of travelling to 20 or more different establishments.

Georgian and Victorian jewellery, English and European porcelain, silver, glass, linen, lamps, collectables and furniture, Persian rugs, both rustic and traditional will be displayed with great care and pride, the dealers themselves endeavouring to supply as much information as possible to help the collector or budding collector.

An additional feature of this year’s event will be the inclusion of vintage fashion and accessories such as hats, shoes and handbags.

The Stanthorpe Antiques and Collectables Fair will also assist Stanthorpe Primary School by having representatives of the school on site for a school fund-raiser.

Show’s a heart-stopper BIG W People’s Day at Warwick Show will be on Friday 27 March and is sure to delight families.

Children under 14 year will get into the show free if accompanied by an adult and adult admission is only $12 (pensioners and high school students $7).

This year there will be a food and wine expo, showcasing local produce in a huge marquee located near the stage area with a men’s and ladies fashion parade at regular intervals throughout the day.

Daytime entertainment includes the traditional displays like: the animal nursery, the schools’ competition in the Douglas Feez Pavilion with photography, cooking, Lego display, floral art, woodwork, lapidary and other pavilion favourites.

You can see roaming children’s entertainers, or wander to the northern fence to check out the stand alone Contrasts Art Show or watch the showjumping in the sand arena. There’s the dog show, cattle, sheep, poultry, caged birds and much more.

A huge night time entertainment program starting from the kids’ ball drop for the chance for some lucky youngster to win a bicycle from Redbacks Bicycles; the Warwick Hack and Pony Club musical ride, sheep racing, demolition derby, fireworks sponsored by Spanos Supa IGA or dance the evening

Five secret rules of the road AS HOLIDAY time approaches, Queensland’s peak motoring body the RACQ has warned drivers to brush up on their road rules before taking to the roads.

The RACQ’s Lauren Ritchie said there were probably a number of road rules that drivers don’t even know they are breaking and, unfortunately, ignorance isn’t a valid excuse if caught out.

“Some people may think a lack of knowledge of a particular road rule might be enough to get them out of a ticket, but it’s not,” Ms Ritchie said.

“It’s the driver’s responsibility to know the rules before getting behind the wheel.”

Ms Ritchie said the Queensland road rules were regularly updated making it important to

stay up to date with the latest changes.

“Chances are the legislation has changed slightly since most people sat their driving exam, so staying across new laws is vital,” she said.

“While some drivers may not agree with all of the road rules, they’re in place for a reason and that’s to keep all road users safe.”

The five road rules most people don’t know they are breaking are: A car must be locked, key removed from ignition and handbrake on if the driver is more than three metres away from their car.

Kids of all ages are invited to participate in our Hoppy Easter Hunt, running from Monday 23 March until Saturday 4 April.

Rose City Marketing manager Stevie Brennan said the centre wide Easter Hunt will be a hit with every child being a winner.

words hidden around the centre then bring your completed form into centre management to receive a mystery prize.”

Blank Hoppy Easter Hunt forms will be available from the centre management office throughout the duration of the hunt.

“If you’re especially lucky, you may even spot the Easter Bunny out and about with a basket full of eggs while you’re

hunting for code words,” she said.

Hurry in as there is a limited number of mystery prizes available and they could run out if the budding young sleuths of Warwick are quick to snap up the code words.

“So come in quick and start searching for the four Easter Bunnies holding the code words, located in shop fronts throughout the centre.”

Bunnies are boiling AFTER two weeks of competition fans now have a clearer picture of the 2015 NRL landscape.

The Bunnies and Roosters look streets ahead of the rest.

The Panthers might be the quiet achievers again this year and the young Tigers are flexing their claws.

Perhaps it will be a good year ahead for cat lovers?

The Doggies are showing they have growl and bite while over at Manly they are busy fighting battles on two fronts - on and off the field.

Broncos fans hoping for a promising start are in pain as their team struggles to find its feet.

The Cowboys are winless and are searching to erase the bullseye on JT’s chest, back and head.

Melbourne Storm was the victim of some dodgy calls from the refs last weekend but you expect consistent performances throughout the season.

Injuries are already having a significant impact.

After a promising off season and round one performance the depth of the Eels will be tested as key players battle injury.

The Dragons have similar issues.

The Titans are looking down the barrel of disaster and what was supposed to be a better season for the Sharks is fast turning into another nightmare.

The Knights, Raiders and Warriors will be headache material for tipsters.

The refs and judiciary have had below par starts to the season.

Unfortunately we are likely to hear more about the Voldermorts as the season progresses although not if the NRL has its way.

Of course there will be many more changes to this landscape before October.

Round three gets underway on Friday night with a couple of important local derbies.

Manly and Canterbury go headto-head at Brookvale while in Brisbane the Broncos will be circling the wagons against the Cowboys.

Manly showed ticker to get the

points against Melbourne but had plenty go their way.

The Doggies took full advantage of an injury ravaged Parra to get on the winners’ board. This will be a tough game and fans will remind the Bulldogs that they are at Brookvale but, like a dog with a bone, I think they will return to the kennel with the points.

Look for outstanding performances from both DCE and Brett Morris.

At Suncorp, the Cowboys will be hoping to break their duck.

Brisbane is still searching to find their mojo.

As a Broncos supporter I am letting my heart rule my head but this game has split our household.

Another blockbuster clash has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon at ANZ. One of the highlights of round three are the Bunnies and Tigers.

Last weekend’s game between the Bunnies Roosters was an epic encounter.

The Bunnies began like a whirlwind, went off the boil and had the confidence to back themselves and grab a come from behind win. Bad

news for all clubs, captain Greg Inglis said they can play much better.

The young Tigers handed the Dragons an old-fashioned carve up in the first half of their Monday night clash.

In spite of claiming a good win they failed to put the Dragons to the sword in a second half littered with chances.

The Tigers are the young kids on the block and are playing well.

This is their big test.

Expect the Bunnies to win but it might not be easy street.

In other games on Saturday an injury ravaged Parra cross the ditch with a new-look line-up.

The Warriors notched up a win last weekend and their fans will be looking for them to win at home.

The result could depend on how the Eels’ replacements fit the bill.

Canberra Stadium has been a graveyard for Dragons teams but last season they shook off that hoodoo.

On Monday night, the Dragons were victims of themselves against the Tigers.

Schoolboy errors have the coach threatening changes.

The Green Machine showed they have plenty to offer last weekend despite their loss to the Warriors.

There are very positive signs from the young Raiders.

Injuries have weakened the Dragons and the Mean Green Machine will be looking for win number two.

Melbourne Storm hosts the Sharks at AAMI Stadium on Saturday night and even with a repeat performance from the Voldermorts should still win.

The Knights caused an upset for the Cowboys last weekend.

Enforcer Beau Scott escaped sanctioning from the judiciary for some unsavoury hits and looks fortunate to have only been slapped with a wet lettuce.

The Knights should make it three from three after their trip to Titans’ headquarters.

Monday night the NRL have served up another mouth-watering clash between the Roosters and Panthers.

The Roosters were good against the Bunnies but Mitchell Pearce is key to their success and he went missing for chunks of the game and needs to be on song for all 80 minutes. Ignore the Panthers’ win over the Titans last weekend.

Look to their opening round for an indication of their potential this season.

Against the odds they finished 2014 with a flurry and with senior players back on the paddock they look the real deal this season.

In a tough game I expect the Roosters to be crowing after the game but if the Penny Panthers pull out a win it would surprise no-one.

ONLY two weeks into the NRL season, and we are seeing more of the same - inconsistency in the interpretation of the rules and despite the myriad of camera angles and advanced technology some decisions that beggar belief.

On one day, a tackle is deserving of a lengthy suspension - on another line ball and not even a slap on the wrist.

Not one to be a critic of the man in the middle, I yearn for the time when a ref made a decision and we moved on. We all know referees and umpires are only human and will make mistakes from time to time - that is par for the course. Might also be time some of those commentating on the game acknowledged that very fact. Their very behaviour and that of some of the players filters through to grassroots and junior level.

While I am on the subject, I am sure I am not the only league fan who would like to see the NRL officials with the whistle remember they have a sin bin and use it and yes the sendoff rule still applies although you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

It also concerns me that at every turn the referees are “coaching” the elite of the game while they are on the paddock. There is a constant stream of rhetoric from referees, “Stand here”; “Put the ball in here not there,“ “You’ve moved off the mark - come back here and play the ball.” I believe coaches are paid to coach; players paid to play and referees paid to enforce the rules. If these players can’t get basic things right - penalise them - won’t take long for their coaches and team-mates to make sure they all know the rules. Across the board there are people asking for the NRL to address these matters before we get too far into the season.

Never mind changing the colour of the referees strip to command more respect let’s see some strong performances where they show too some guts. In the meantime, players, coaches and fans become more and more frustrated with the NRL and the Voldermorts.

- Casey GRANDFINAL BOUND WHEATVALE booked themselves a spot in the Warwick Cricket Association grand final this Saturday following their convincing win over the Warwick Hotel Colts last weekend. Wheatvale will play Maryvale Condamine for the Condamine Cup at Warwick headquarters, Slade Park.

Wheatvale had first use of the wicket and they did not get off to the best of starts. They had lost four wickets with only 29 runs on the board when Chris Malone joined his brother, Wheatvale opener Brendan at the crease. The pair set about rescuing the innings and put on a 150 run fifthwicket partnership. Wheatvale was finally dismissed for 212. Chris Malone top scored with 80 and Brother Brendan was not far away with 74.

There were some good performances with the ball from the Colts bowlers - Shaun O’Leary took 4/47 from his 10-over spell. Geoff Thorley also bowled well and finished with 3/11 from 3.2 overs.

A total of 212 did not look to be an ungettable target for Colts when they came to the wicket.

Maugan Benn and Adam Byrne looked to have Colts on track after the loss of an early wicket.

When Benn and Byrne were dismissed, there was little resistance from the remaining batsmen as the Wheatvale bowling attack gained the upper hand. Chris Cantwell took three wickets for only nine runs and was well supported by Paul Cantwell, James Breen and Carter Bilbrough.

In reserve Grade, Allora Railway Hotel Rascals earned themselves a start in the Grand Final with a win over Sovereign. They will play at Al-

Both grand finals will be played on Saturday with games commencing at 10am.

Following the games, there will be a presentation of trophies in the club house at Slade Park.

WIN FOR ARMSTRONG PAUL Armstrong had a good round at last Sunday’s Sporters in Stanthorpe and came away with a win ahead. Along the way, he collected the pin shot on 17. Runner-up was Mark Doorley. In the rundowns, Rob Reeves collected a ball and also returned the Best Gross. Also figuring in the rundowns was Bob Watts. Mick Speer took the pin shot on the 12th and Paul Byrnes took the Pro Pin. Not too sure if we saw a little bit of rivalry or follow the leader from the senior members of the executive - Mr President had a nine at the first hole; following the example of his esteemed leader Mr Treasurer equalled that score at the next hole.

Winners of last week’s meat trays were Craig Pearson and Don Carey.

Another reminder for Sporters and all golfers and would-be golfers the Maureen Bates Memorial Day is scheduled for 10 May. Get your team together now for this great day. As always there will be plenty of great prizes and a multi draw raffle. In the meantime, you can get in plenty of practice at Sporters - tee off this Sunday at the usual time.

PINCHING PRACTICE AT RRR SEVERAL players took the opportunity for some last-minute practice for the Warwick Championships during last week’s The Red Rooster Rumble. John Francis the eventual winner carded 22 points and runner-up Greg Wallace 21. Six players handed in cards with 19 points but on a countback only two got a rundown ball, Jesse Harris and newcomer Stuart Wade. Pins went to Ross Kannar (11), Peter Millard (13), and Mal Crawford (16).

CHAMPIONSHIP WIN FOR COCKRAM THE final of the Warwick Club championships were played last weekend, and as always the competition brings out a mix of emotions among grown up men. I heard it mooted that some even said dust off the abacus to tally their daily scores.

After four rounds of stiff competition the winner of the 2015 A grade championship with a best nett score of 72; 65; 68 and 70 (*275) was Eamon Cockram. Warwick Real Estate sponsored the nett winners for each grade in the championships. Jamie Saunders took out B grade best nett with scores of 68, 64, 70, 78 (280). Tom Smith returned scores of 73, 61, 70, and 65 (269) to take out the “C” Grade.

Saturday’s competition sponsored by the Horse and Jockey Hotel Motel was the third round of the championships a field of 72 players took to the course. “A” Grade player Geoff Hinze returned the best nett score of 64 four clear of runner-up Peter Millard. Ball run downs went 70 with a cluster of players receiving balls. Pins went to Carl Simmons (5), Declan Murphy (7 and 11), Jay Roberts (9), Gary Russell-Sharam (13), and Geoff Hinze (16).

MOPAR MUSCLE AT MORGAN PARK ACTION returns to the Warwick Dragway at Morgan Park this weekend for the sixth annual Mopar Muscle Weekend. Featured will be Chryslers of all makes and models ranging from early Aussie Valiant’s to modern Chrysler 300C’s. Enthusiasts will see Chargers, Pacers ranging from standard spec original to modified street machines, along with American Dodge Challengers, Plymouth Cuda’s and much more.

The event is open to anyone who has a Chrysler they wish to race or perhaps take part in Sunday’s Show and Shine event might be more your pace.

The cars cruising into town for a two-hour display at Leslie Park from 10am until noon on Saturday morning to get the event underway.

Saturday afternoon will be taken up with testing and tuning, practice/qualifying in preparation for Sunday's racing kicks which will get underway at 10.30am.

The winners and runners-up from each of the four brackets receive trophies and cash prizes. To wrap up the event, the winners will then race off against each other in a thrilling finale to determine the Grand Champion.

All racing is DYO, and all racers get three full rounds regardless of win/lose under the Chicago Shootout formula, making the event suitable to both experienced racers and first-time cruisers.

BUSINESS END OF WORLD CUP AFTER what seems to have been an age, the lineup for the Quarter Final of the ICC World Cup has finally been decided.

So now on to the real battle and who will ultimately be crowned World Cup title holders.

Sri Lanka and South Africa got things underway on Wednesday and India play Bangladesh of Thursday at the MCG in what is surely the biggest cricketing moment in the short history of Bangladeshi cricket.

On Friday at the Adelaide Oval, Australia must beat Pakistan to progress to the Semi Final round. Pakistan has looked in good touch throughout the tournament and Australia will not be able to afford to put a foot wrong in this game.

If there is one ground in Australia where the tourists are capable of beating the Aussies, it is surely Adelaide. Pakistan has already played two games there in this tournament and the pitch should hold no surprises.

in Wellington to decide the final spot in the Semi Finals.

MISSING IN ACTION THERE was a glitch at the Inglewood range last Sunday after the no show of the shoot captains - MIA. Apparently there are those who know where they were the night before. Their absence meant a hastily arranged hit and giggle session with Muzzle Loaders, Rimfire and Centrefires.

This weekend, members are hoping Sunday’s pistol events will go off without a hitch. The captain’s plans for the day however remain top secret.

What is not embargoed is the annual Anzac Tribute Shoot that will be held over two weekends (the first on 19 April and the official shoot on 26 April). A big program is being put together, and visitors are most welcome to attend this popular event.

SANTO SEALS A WIN A WELL-constructed back nine sealed a win for Santo Cavallaro last Saturday. Forty off the stick was enough for Cavallaro to claim the win - his nett score of 66 gave him a two-shot cushion ahead of runner-up Chris Fittock who just pipped Rob Reeves in a countback. All other minor prizes except the pin at 17 were won by two players. The day was sponsored by Kay Webb, Linda Kelly and Margie Locke.

Matt Waterworth has been in good form of late and walked away with the pin at 3/12, propin at 1/10 and a ball in the run down. Dylan Barraclough continues to impress with such a low handicap and collected the pro-pins at 5/14 and 9/18, the birdies nest at 9 and a ball in the run down with nett 69, 70 off the stick.

The remaining pin at 17 went the way of the overall winner, Santo.

In the best two of three rounds for the Pike Trophy, Matt Waterworth has almost got both hands on the trophy having already posted a nett 132. In the distance are Darryl Boekholt and Dylan Barraclough who are currently six and seven shots in arrears.

Saturday is the final round of the Pike Trophy, a single stroke event which will also be played for the Nuffield Cup. This long standing club trophy makes for some interesting reading when you take the time to check out the previous winners.

Local Sport BRL ROUND ROBIN THE Border Rugby League open the 2015 season this weekend when the Tenterfield Tigers host the annual pre-season Round Robin at Rugby League Park.

It will be an action-packed day with games commencing at 11.15am (AEDST).

The Killarney Cutters have won the Round Robin trophy for the past two years. They will be looking for another positive start to the season as they prepare to defend back- to-back A Grade Premiership titles.

In the opening game on Saturday, the hosts Tenterfield Tigers play the Wallangarra Rams.

The 2014 League Tag premiers, the Tigers Ladies will also be in action. They open their 2015 account with a game against the Wallangarra Rammettes. That game is set down for 1.05. The Ramettes have been training well, and despite being defeated by the Stanthorpe Gremlinettes last weekend in a trial game at Sullivan Oval are expecting to have a more successful season.

There will also be a nine-a-side Under 18 game played between Tenterfield and Stanthorpe.

On Tuesday the team of Alex Mattiazzi Joe Zeppa and Artie White were the overall winners in turkey triples. Ten teams played two round of 12 ends.

The winners of round two were the Gaye Wilmot skipped team of Attilio Zamprogno and Margaret Harvey.

GOOD CONDITIONS FOR CROQUET THERE was plenty activity on the green at the Stanthorpe Croquet club with games played in ideal conditions last week. Members played two sets of pairs in association croquet last week. Grace Howard and Heather Widderick pegged out a 26 - 18 win against Joy Newman and Effey Russell. In the other game, Margaret Dickenson and Val Shepherd drew 17-all in their game against Andrea Denkewitz and Pat Schnoor. In an exciting game, Margaret Dickenson and Pat Schoor had breaks of four.

It was the Hoop runners on the green on Wednesday and two games were played. Three players

in the group had outstanding games. Bill Golding showed that he has mastered the very difficult jump shot. Golding managed some other very inventive and cheeky shots that were perhaps not quite out of the text book. Teresa Pyne, Dianne Wren and Bill Golding all went close to scoring a “hoop in one” landing the ball in the hoop but unfortunately not all the way through.

Gateball was played on Friday with four player Heather Widderick and Effey Russell managed the refereeing duties.

The games resulted in three wins for the White team and two for the Red. New players are most welcome to join the Gateball coaching sessions held each Thursday afternoon at 4pm.

Captains for each division of the game were recently elected. The new captains are Pat Schnoor, (association croquet); Val Fancourt (hoop runners golf croquet) and Margaret Dickenson (gateball) who heads off this weekend to play in a tournament this weekend while the association who will be playing a tournament next weekend.

KNOCK OUT SEMI IN STANTHORPE THERE will be no second chances for one team after the Stanthorpe Cricket Association knockout semi-final this weekend. Valleys and Wanderers will be playing for the right to meet RSL in the grand final on 28 March.

Valleys go in to the game as slight favourites and with winning form after defeating South’s last weekend.

Despite a slow start to the 2014/’15 season, Wanderers captain Tim Harslett has been impressed with the performance of his side in the past few weeks.

Several players have returned to the side and there looks to be much more depth in the team. There are a number of Wanderers players who have struck form at the right end of the season with both bat and ball and Harslett is quietly confident his side will be there on 28 March.

THE Warwick Cowboys opened their 2015 TRL season with an impressive win 46-nil thumping of Brothers on Saturday night. Captain coach Matt Gainey was delighted with the effort of his team who have shown outstanding form in the pre season.

A procession of Cowboys players lined up for tries, but Gainey was most impressed with two players having their first run in a Grade - Braydon Wilson and Michael Pearson. Tom Cameron also made an impressive return to the squad.

In other grades, the Cowboys had a 46-6 win in reserve grade but he Under 18s were defeated 2414.

This weekend the Cowboys play Pittsworth in Pittsworth, and will be looking for another win after their impressive opening game.

FAVOURITES LEAD THE WAY AT ALLMAN PARK THE Warwick Turf club hosted another successful seven-event programme last weekend. Punters had a field day with favourites winning all but two of the seven events.

Three-year-old filly Had Me at Hello showed her liking for the Allman park track winning the Class Two handicap over 1100m. The three-year-old bay filly who started favourite made it back-to-back wins when she defeated Handful of Silver and Hammersmith in a thrilling finish.

In an unusual set of circumstances, stewards last week revisited the photo finish of the Armidale galloper Kingston Time’s dead heat with Warwick galloper Cuban back on 31 January. Following the inquiry, stewards set aside the result and amended the placings, declaring Cuban the winner and relegating Kinston time to second place.

It is most unusual for placings to be amended once correct weight is declared and this scribe can only recall one other occasion when it has occurred.

Connections of Kingston Time have no such concerns after the geldings impressive in in the opening event on Saturday. The six-year-old trained

by Paul Grills slipped away to a four-length win over his archrival Cuban.

Stormy Grey was successful in the Better Than Ready three-year-old 1500 metre QTIS event.

The Jim Hanna trained gelding narrowly defeated Toowoomba visitor Finnomony.
