Bike crash rescue

By BEN CAMERON A CYCLIST in his 50s was airlifted to The Alfred hospital on Saturday afternoon after coming off his mountain bike in the GWS Anderson Scout Park in Officer.

A crew of around 30, including local CFA and SES volunteers, combined to rescue the man who suffered serious injuries to his neck and back.

An ambulance spokesperson said the man fell 1.25m from

the bike track and landed in a creek bed.

Nar Nar Goon CFA Second Lieutenant Justin Seddon said brigades from Nar Nar Goon, Officer, Upper Beaconsfield and Dandenong, plus a Paken-

ham SES unit, got the man out using rope rescue.

He estimated the man was located approximately 100m into the bush after coming off a bridge.

tached to a stretcher carrying the man by rope, while around another eight assisted.

“It took us around 90 minutes to get him out,” Lt Seddon said.

“There was some pretty steep terrain.

“There were about 30 people involved in the operation.”

The man was airlifted around 5pm.

A spokesperson for The Alfred hospital said the man was in a critical but stable condition.

Sound mental health advice

By ANEEKA SIMONIS STRATEGIES to improve physical and mental health in schools and workplaces across the shire were flagged at council’s Health and Wellbeing Forum in Pakenham yesterday.

The second annual wellness forum at Outlook Community Centre tied in with Beyondblue’s National Roadshow tour which provided teachers the information they need to identify and help students suffering with mental illness.

“There was certainly concern from teachers wanting to find out how to connect with their kids and guide them through difficult times,” said Beyondblue’s Lucy Beardall.

Professor Jo Salmon from Deakin University addressed the forum with evidence-based research about the effects of physical activity and sedentary behaviour in early childhood, schools and workplaces.

Cardinia Shire Counil’s Communities that Care (CTC) facilitator Amy Moore said inspired schools might take on her advice to use standing desks as a way of stimulating students’ heads and bodies in the classroom along with other activity-based learning schemes.

Fellow guest speaker Dr Craig Hassed from Monash University encouraged focused learning rather than multitasking which can increase students’ stress and anxiety levels.

A larger mental health and well-being forum was held later in the evening at Beaconhills College.

Beyondblue’s Lucy Beardall and Michael Mooney provided teachers with tips on how to identify and help students suspected to be struggling with mental illness.

WHILE Victoria has experienced an upwards trend in unemployment, jobless numbers in Cardinia Shire have only risen slightly.

A report by the Australian Government’s Department of Employment has shown a small increase from 5.8 per cent unemployment in September 2013, to 6.1 per cent a year later.

Kooweerup has helped keep the stats down, with a decrease in jobless figures.

In a year, unemployment in the town of more than 3,000 people has dropped .3 per cent.

Bunyip and Garfield’s jobless rate has stayed the same at 4.7 per cent, while 57 people added to Pakenham North’s increase and an extra 67 people lifted Pakenham South’s unemployment numbers.

Victoria has experienced an overall rise in unemployment from 5.7 per cent to 6.5 per cent over the 12-month period.

Large increases were recorded in Batemans Bay, New South Wales and Melbourne’s own Broadmeadows.

A DRUNK driver was caught more than five times over the legal limit in Berwick yesterday morning.

The 48-year-old woman was driving a BMW X5 along

Greaves Road at 1.35am on Wednesday 18 March.

Narre Warren police members intercepted the woman after noticing her car had a flat tyre and was missing its front bumper.

The driver returned a posi-

tive breath test at the scene and was taken back to Narre Warren police station where she blew .264 per cent.

The Berwick woman is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving and driving while disqualified.

“It’s filled a hole. I’ve met someone of his family.”

Over coffee Bill told John and Sheila about his memories of sharing a hooch with Eric and fighting alongside his cherished companion.

“I told them how we spent our time together, the closeness that we had,” Bill said.

“You share everything together.

“While one’s manning the gun pit

the other one’s making a brew. So you become really close, you watch out for each other.

“I rarely spoke about how we got on together - how important he was in my life, and still is.

“I don’t need a photograph to know what he looks like… I can see him… as clear as looking at you, I can see him.

“That’s never diminished.”

When they met last year, Bill said he knew as soon as he spotted John walk through the door that he was Eric’s nephew.

“Now whether it was just an assumption, oh well here’s a couple coming in... but no, there was a resemblance there,” Bill said.

“That was good… It was really nice.

“And it was good to... there was no sort of thought of what do we talk about.

“There was a connection straight away.”

They spoke of Eric’s life growing up in England, and serving as 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guard in the British

Army in the Rhine and South America.

At one point Eric was also stationed at Buckingham Palace, but he soon felt the pull of the Vietnam War - an opportunity to fight among his brothers in arms.

“He and a mate came out here to join the Australian army ‘cause they thought, well they’ve got Vietnam going here,” Bill said.

“This is where the action is, instead of standing outside the gates of Buckingham Palace.”

THE nephew of a British soldier killed in the Vietnam War used a Berwick News article to track down his uncle’s best mate from Australia who he fought alongside more than 40 years ago.

Machine gunner Eric Halkyard was killed in February 1971 by a grenade as he lay next to his close friend and ally, Bill Rogers, during a gun battle in the high hills of Phuoc Tuy province, in South Vietnam.

On the eve of Anzac Day last year Bill, 69, of Berwick, shared with the News the agony of losing his best mate while Bill was medevaced out of the battle with severed nerves in his arm and shrapnel in his back but still lived to tell the tale.

In last year’s published article, Bill said he’d never been able to find Eric’s family - until now.

While researching his family history Eric’s nephew John Moores, who lives in Manchester, England, came across the News article a few months later on the internet and tracked down Bill, a former president of Melbourne Legacy, through the Legacy group.

Even better, he and his wife, Sheila, had already planned to travel to Melbourne and were able to meet up with Bill for one day last August.

“It was a bit emotional,” Bill said.

“They were only here for that day, so we only spent probably a couple of hours together but the couple of hours seemed to be enough in as much as it filled a hole that was there.

Council in cage fight

By BRIDGET SCOTT CITY of Casey councillors were divided in their opinions over the controversial sport of cage fighting at a meeting on Tuesday.

Some said they would have no issue if it came to the municipality.

Mayfield Ward Councillor Amanda Stapledon moved a motion expressing her views against the sport and encouraged council to ask for a local law to be put in place to prevent it coming to Casey.

However the motion was met with resistance with Cr Rosalie Crestani dissenting.

Cr Wayne Smith also opposed Cr Stapledon’s motion. “If we start shutting things like this down it will send them underground,� Cr Crestani said. “I don’t think we should step into this area.�

However Cr Stapledon said she wanted to prevent cage fighting from coming to the City of Casey in the first place.

In support of her motion, Cr Stapledon read from Hansard where Minister for Local Government Ms Natalie Hutchins told parliament that “councils are sovereign bodies�

and they “can introduce their own by-laws if they choose to do so, they have the right to do so.�

In her motion, which was carried, Cr Stapledon asked council to write to the Honourable Natalie Hutchins, MP, Minister for Local Government advising of council’s opposition to cage fighting both within the City of Casey and the State of Victoria.

Council will also seek further clarification on how best to prepare a local law disallowing cage fighting within the municipality. “I was horrified when I heard it would be permitted,� Cr Stapledon said.

“It’s a barbaric style of fighting and you’re hurting other people.� “It’s violence in an arena.�

The councillor also asked what happened to those who didn’t make the grade to be cage fighters.

Cr Crestani says “people have a right� to participate in this sport if they like, saying boxing could be just as bad.

Cr Gary Rowe said cage fighting was a violent form of mixed martial arts and was a bad example for the young people in the City of Casey.

After the motion was carried, Cr Crestani called for a division.

By BRIDGET SCOTT A DRUG forum held in Narre Warren last week confronted its guests with frightening facts about ice and urged the local community to assist police in the fight to end the local plague.

Last Wednesday 11 March, representatives from sporting clubs throughout the City of Casey gathered for a drug forum aimed at helping people come up with an official drug policy for their respective clubs.

Around 50 people turned out for the forum led by the Australian Drug Foundation, which urged people to become part of the Good Sports Program.

Geoff Munro, National Policy manager for the Australian Drug Foundation was a guest speaker at the event and urged people to create a policy as a way of prevention.

He said sporting clubs provided a protective environment, with local coaches often acting as a mentor to those they were in charge of. “The most important person in the club is the coach,� he said. “The coach sets the standard, but so do we all.�

He said a drug policy was invaluable and was a formal statement which provided guidelines for people at the club which could act as a deterrent from drug use.

Local Inspector and area commander Paul Breen also spoke at the event and asked guests and the wider community to help police stop the spread of ice. “People look at police and say what are you doing about it, but what is everyone else doing about it?� he asked. “We are not winning the fight.� “It’s prevalent.�

An ice forum at Narre Warren last week gave representatives from local sporting clubs an insight into how they can help stop the plague. 134189

Peter Wearn, drug expert and director of YSAS also spoke at the forum and gave the audience an insight into the reality of the drug and the effect it has on users.

Mr Wearn explained that ice causes the “flooding and release� of people’s own chemicals into the brain and described it as “pleasure at a price.�

“It creeps up on people and deregulates their emotional response,� he said. “It compromises people’s ability to think normally.�

The forum was one of many held throughout Victoria, with some local sporting clubs already part of the Good Sports Program.

A 1977 HX Kingswood sedan with a 253 V8, (a lot of good times in that car).

7. Tell us about a funny incident that occurred while you were working?

I was working at Frankston HWP in an unmarked police vehicle and plain clothes.

My partner and I were patrolling the Carrum Downs industrial area when a Holden Clubsport came up behind our police vehicle flashing his headlights and swerving from side to side trying to intimidate us to move out of his way.

As we turned left into another street, the Holden Clubsport also turned left around the outside of the police car, spinning the tyres, with smoke bellowing from the vehicle and fishtailing up the road in front of us. We hit the flashing lights and siren.

You should have seen his face when we spoke to him... priceless!

His vehicle was impounded under the hoon legislation and as the vehicle was being towed away, I gave my partner a big high five.

A member of the public observed the high five and incident and sent a letter into Victoria Police Ethical Standards Division stating how happy he was with us impounding that vehicle as the driver did the same thing every day in front of his factory.

8. If you could have anyone over for dinner, who would it be and why?

Peter Brock. An Australian motorsport legend. I’m sure he would have had some great stories to tell.

9. Who is your favourite band or singer?

Rock: AC/DC. ’80s: Depeche Mode and U2 and I’m very partial to a bit of Shania Twain.

10. What safety message do you have for the motoring public?

Parents, be aware that your driving behaviours influence the way your children end up driving.

Be a role model for their safe driving in the future.

As a father of four children, I know they see and hear everything you say and do behind the wheel.

Keep your children safe on the roads, there is nothing worse, as a police officer, than having to tell a parent that their child is not coming home.

Unfortunately, I have had to that on too many occasions. Drive safely, please.

Fresh leaf for St Pat’s THE Blue Bears group at Rangebank Preschool celebrated with a different colour on Tuesday as the young ones got into the spirit of St Patrick’s Day. The children took part in a range of green activities such as decorating and eating shortbread shamrocks, decorating shamrocks and they also enjoyed some messy fun with green paint.

All children were encouraged to come along dressed in a green outfit and were given a small insight into Ireland itself when they were shown a map, as well as a shamrock leaf.

‘Gun’ armed robbery bid

By BRIDGET SCOTT A FATHER was held up at gunpoint in a terrifying early morning incident outside a Hampton Park childcare centre last week.

Police believe the father was approached by an offender wielding what is now thought to be an imitation handgun about 6.30am on Friday 13 March outside the Somerville Road childcare centre.

The father had already dropped off his children when he was confronted by a youth wearing a yellow bandana over his face.

The victim told police the

attacker threatened to shoot him unless he handed over money.

When the victim said he had no money, the offender fled in a stolen silver Mazda sedan.

The victim was shaken but not harmed.

Later that morning the alleged offender and an accomplice led police on a high speed chase through the streets of Lynbrook after being sighted in Elliott Parade.

Police called off the chase when it became too dangerous.

The stolen car was then set alight and dumped in Moreton Bay Boulevard near the West-

ernport Highway.

A 17-year-old boy from Lynbrook appeared in the Dandenong Children’s Court charged with attempted armed robbery and two counts of reckless conduct endangering life. He did not apply for bail. A 19-yearold youth from Dandenong was charged with theft of a motor vehicle. He was released to reappear at a later date.

Relay’s power to move HOPE - it’s more than just a word.

On the weekend, more than 4000 people took part in the Casey Relay for Life - over 24 hours from Friday night to Saturday - and each of them had those four letters in mind.

The participants had all been touched by cancer in some way, directly and indirectly, and they all hope for a cure and for peace.

The relay committee is also

hopeful this year’s financial return will rival recent event figures after thousands descended on Akoonah Park over the two days.

The Berwick relay’s Marisa Evans said that with 111 teams taking part and 4020 individual participants, this year’s event had raised a tick over $300,000 so far for the Cancer Council.

“We raised $462,000 last year, I would not be surprised if we get near that figure again," she said.

“We still count for another four weeks."

A very moving candelight ceremony on Friday evening allowed attendees to remember those lost and celebrate those still here, while a number of colourful characters walked laps and provided entertainment throughout the weekend.

A MASKED gatecrasher armed with a knife who demanded a partygoer hand over his mobile phone was urged to give it back by his apparent accomplices.

The three offenders stormed the Cranbourne North party just after midnight on Saturday, with one holding a knife and wearing a bandana over his face. Several partygoers fled the Ayres Close property through an adjacent paddock.

It’s believed one of the victims who fled then returned to the house where he was confronted by the armed offender who held the knife to his stomach and demanded his phone.

But it’s understood the two other intruders appeared reluctant and convinced the armed offender to give the victim back his phone.

All three intruders then fled through the nearby paddock.

Two of the intruders aren’t believed to have been disguised, and police are urging anyone with information about their appearance to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

Entertainment Facing up to cancer All on the line in the ring Medically Speaking

THERE’S a fear that goes through a person when they are told they have cancer.

A cancer diagnosis affects not only an individual, but also family and friends.

They may feel scared, uncertain, or angry about the unwanted changes cancer will bring to their life and the lives of their loved ones.

They may feel numb or confused.

They may have trouble listening to, understanding or remembering what people tell them during this time.

On top of this is the overwhelming complexity of the treatments available to them.

This will include any combination of surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, biological therapy, and experimental therapies.

As well as directed cancer treatments there is psychological and nutritional support, and exercise programs that all improve overall outcomes.

All cancer patients deserve this multidisciplinary approach.

Multidisciplinary cancer care (MCC) is an integrated team approach to health care in which medical and allied health care professionals consider all relevant treatment options and collaboratively develop an individual treatment and care plan for each patient, taking into account the personal preferences of the patient.

This figure will rise substantially in the next 10 years, as the incidence of cancer is rising by 5 per cent per year in Australia and the population of Casey/ Cardinia will rise by an estimated 41 per cent by 2021.

It is now estimated that onein-two people born after 1960 will develop cancer.

Until recently, cancer patients from the area had to travel significant distances for chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

The burden of excessive travel puts significant unnecessary strain on patients and their carers, given that treatment is often given cyclically for months and causes significant side-effects.

Fortunately for local residents, the Berwick Specialist Centre is now open and providing care for patients closer to home.

There is an undeniable healthcare need for cancer services in Casey/Cardinia, and it is this need that has led to an exciting collaboration between St John of God, Radiation Oncology Victoria (ROV) and six oncologists including Oncology Clinics Victoria (OCV) to provide comprehensive cancer services at the 55 Kangan Drive site.

As of 18 March, day chemotherapy services are being provided by St John of God, ambulatory radiation therapy by ROV which opened in February and Imaging will be provided

by MIA. Medical oncology will be provided by a team of six oncologists and dietetics, exercise physiology, and psycho-oncology services provided by OCV. Oliver Klein and Esther Lin are two of the oncologists who work with the OCV team.

Ladies harness the night WHAT better way to support a good cause than by kicking up your heels and enjoying a fun night out at the local trots with friends.

Girls Night Out is on again complete with food, fashion, entertainment and racing - proudly brought to you by the Cranbourne Harness Racing Club.

Works to the Pearcedale Recreation Reserve Tennis Club Pavilion are now complete with the City of Casey Mayor Mick Morland officially opening an ace new facility on Monday 2 March following the $620,000 upgrade.

Councillor Mick Morland commended council for the completed works in Pearcedale. “The old pavilion no longer met the expectations of the community, so the old building was torn down and this fantastic new facility built in its place,� he said.

“The project demonstrates council’s commitment to providing excellent facilities for local clubs and the community to engage in sport and physical activity.�

He also added that council acknowledged the importance of sustainable sporting facilities in the area. “Clubs, like the Pearcedale Tennis Club, play an important

role in creating a strong community, as well as maximising opportunities for residents, and we are keen to see them succeed,� he said. “The new pavilion has already been used to host a number of club functions, including the junior presentation night, and it is fantastic to see it being embraced by the club.�

By BRIDGET SCOTT A BUSINESS owner who found herself jobless and homeless all on the same day has turned her life around in less than two years.

Fran Rourke was made redundant from her previous job, and returned home on the same day to find an eviction notice on her door.

The landlord wanted to move back in, and she had no choice but to leave. “I found myself unemployed and homeless,� she said.

The Cranbourne woman managed to find herself another rental property a short time after, however she wasn’t able to advertise her new business from here.

Finally, she has secured her

own home, and with the help of a government program her business is now smooth sailing.

After she lost her job, Ms Rourke started to receive Newstart payments but this didn’t rest easy with her.

Not long after this, she discovered the NEIS program, the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme.

An Australian Governmentrun program, this system helps budding business owners get the kick start they need when first entering their respective industry. “They support you for the first 12 months while you’re building your business and doing all the leg work,� she said. “They provide you with the same amount of money as what

you would get from Newstart payments.�

Ms Rourke also attended Chisolm Institute where she did a small business course for three months. She now runs a successful quilting and embroidery business.

She conducts classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and said it’s “doing pretty good.�

Ms Rourke had a small piece of advice for other small business owners of people who find themselves in a similar position. “Just get out and do it, because nobody else will do it for you,� she said. “I could’ve stayed in the hole I dug myself, but I had two girls I wanted to raise, I had to do it for myself.�

Entrants for the ambassador award had to complete an entry form, outlining their reason for applying along with a resume and were chosen on enthusiasm and knowledge of rural life and agricultural shows.

“It’s a good opportunity to link up young adults with our rural community and the show and be able to teach kids that might not have the opportunity about what’s out there,” Ms Murphy said.

“I recently asked a high school student what he wanted to do when he leaves school, and he said become a mechanic and travel. I asked if he had thought about being a mechanic on harvesting equipment as it offers the chance to travel

all around Australia. He hadn’t,” she said.

With much experience and her own beef cattle stud in Labertouche, Ms Murphy said many students weren’t educated about the job opportunities available in the rural sector.

THIS year’s Parklea Pakenham and District Agricultural and Horticultural Show’s Rural Ambassador Awards went to two very passionate and experienced young women.

Laboratory technician for Ridley stockfeeds Jess Murphy from Drouin was awarded senior ambassador and VCE student Giorgi Boucher from Marist-Sion College Warragul snatched up the junior ambassador.

Ms Murphy had some previous experience as an ambassador, winning the sought-after award multiple times as a junior at Bunyip.

“I’ve got a little bit of an inkling for it,” she said.

Ms Murphy is a committee member for the Bunyip and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society and has participated in local shows, presenting cattle and exhibiting photography for more than 10 years.

“I am really looking forward to the show, I’m very lucky and excited,” she said.

This is the first time Ms Murphy has applied for the senior ambassador award and said the Pakenham Show was the first of its kind she was a part of as a youngster.

the rural sector, but students don’t have the knowledge.”

“You can work in an office if you want and still be in the rural and agricultural sector,” she said.

Show president Geoff Young said the ambassador role promoted the quality of young people in our area on a local scale as well as Australia- wide.

“Once they have competed locally, they have the opportunity to compete in their region and then for Victoria,” Mr Young said.

Junior ambassador Giorgi Boucher has been showing beef cattle at local and royal shows for six years and hopes to study agribusiness at the University of New England after high school.

“I hope to get into agronomy after university and start my own business – I did work experience with an agronomist and learnt about the benefits for farmers,” Ms Boucher said.

“Career-wise being an ambassador will open up a lot of doors and introduce me to a lot of people. I would definitely apply again and encourage others to as well,” she said.

Jess and Giorgi will be interacting with exhibitors and presenting prizes at the show on Saturday 21 March.

Show’s core status quo PAVILION chief Wendy Andrews notes that this year marks the 104th year of the Parklea Pakenham and District Agricultural and Horticultural Show in Pakenham.

“Our core purpose remains the same as it did over 100 years ago: to offer the local community the opportunity to showcase their produce and homewares and compete against other like-minded people.”

This year, the Pakenham Hall will house the cooking, home products, horticulture, garden produce, craft, needlework, art, weavers and spinners, Country Women’s Association, photography, children’s work, primary and kinder art plus craft demonstrations.

New competitions this year include the scarecrow competition, crudite - tastiest vegetable/fruit platter, terrarium, planted boot or shoe, collage, gift-wrapped parcel, origami, poppy sculpture (open to any medium), decorated bras and aged care facilities section.

To commemorate 100 years of Anzac, the school art theme reflects this milestone. Pakenham RSL has sponsored commemorative trophies for this section.

Also the poppy sculpture has a very broad interpretation. Entries can be in any medium and any dimension as long as they are based on a poppy theme.

Money raised from the decorated bra section will be donated to St John of God oncology unit. Bras can be decorated on a hanger or you can decorate a whacky Paky bra. The hall opens at 9am Saturday 21 March and closes at 4pm. Events schedule - PB Ronald Reserve, Henry and John Streets 9am - Anzac painting project. A oneday project is due to transform an old rusty shipping container into a tribute to the real workhorses of World War I. But instead of honouring Diggers, the challenge outside Pakenham Hall and Library complex at the P.B. Ronald Reserve will be to highlight the efforts of horses that were drafted to the frontline which artists from South Eastern Contemporary Art Network (SECAN) will perform.

9am - Ferret racing, poultry and goat competitions (sponsored by Barastoc).

Alpaca exhibition, Pakenham Floorball exhibition. Wally Wombat Trail begins with 18 stands. Australian Giant Pumpkin/Vegetable Competition, vintage cars, Emerald Historical Machinery, Glenmac Tractors, Berwick Wood Workers Club, free henna painting, Meccano and Hornby train exhibitions.

During these classes, pupils not only learn a variety of calisthenics skills, but they also cultivate lifelong friendships, gain a strong sense of being part of a team, foster good self-esteem and develop an understanding of commitment.

Stage 10am - Truck stage - The Christine Ayres School of Irish Dancing is Melbourne’s premiere Irish Dancing School and will be performing. Boasting two World Champion teams as well as multiple state and national titles in both team dancing and solo, the school holds classes for dancers from ages four and up. Catering for Beginners through to championship dancers and with seven qualified teachers and two adjudicators, the Christine Ayres School of Irish dancing has locations in Berwick, Narre Warren, Richmond and Essendon.

10.30am - Harmony stage begins.

11am and 12.30pm - Skateboard Industruction: Ever wanted to give skateboarding a go, but didn’t know where to start? The YMCA will have qualified skateboard instructors on hand at the Pakenham Skate Park to help you get started. Aimed at beginners the one hour clinics are an introduction to skateboarding and using skate parks safely.

All equipment is provided including safety gear and skateboards.

11am - Cardinia Civic Concert Band (sponsored by Yellow Brick Road): premier band of the shire which performs at a number of events. It has grown into a diverse band, with a wide range of ages and skill levels, but shares a genuine

love of music. It draws on that commonality to give engaging performances and yet also provide a great environment for young musicians to make vast improvements, serving the community as best they can.

11.30am - Martial arts demonstration on stage.

Billed a top event THE 104th Parklea Pakenham and District Agricultural and Horticultural Show will be held at the P.B. Ronald Reserve on Saturday 21 March.

The show, which is one of the biggest events in the Cardinia shire, was recognised as the Event of the Year at the shire’s Australia Day celebrations in January this year.

Following the sale of the Pakenham Racecourse, where the show had been held for the previous 55 years, the show returned to the P.B. Ronald Reserve (formerly the recreation reserve) last year. While the smaller grounds have restricted parts of the show’s former highlights (particularly some of the animal exhibitions), there have been many bonuses, which helped to bring record numbers to last year’s show.

Entry to the event will be free, as it was in 2014. The fact that entry was free and the show has returned to the centre of the Pakenham township meant that many families attended the show for the first time last year. That number is expected to grow even bigger at the 2015 show. This year Parklea has come ‘on board’, and as major sponsor has naming rights to the show.

This generous sponsorship, coupled with the ongoing unstinting support from Cardinia Shire Council and many other great sponsors, has enabled the committee to put together a wonderful program of events that will interest all members of the family.

This year’s show will have two stages working in harmony - one at each end of the reserve - providing non-stop action. The Living Learning Centre, which is on the western boundary of the reserve, will also be a bright and busy area all day. Here, there will be multicultural dancing and singing throughout the day. Seventy national flags will adorn the area and add to the colourful display.

Other highlights will include the Jumbo Farm Barn, with about 50 animals; the Wally Wombat Trail will once again be a highlight; there will be sheep shearing demonstrations, Meccano and

Hornby train exhibitions, skateboard workshops, cake demonstrations, free henna painting, ferret racing competitions and lots more.

The Cardinia Civic Concert Band will once again be a vital part of the show program. Recently introduced to the show program, the giant pumpkin and vegetable competitions will again attract enormous interest. After an absence of some years, the alpacas will make a welcome return.

One of the features of the show will be the Reptile Encounters display. On show will be the jungle python, the angle headed dragons, green tree frogs, central netted dragons, bearded dragon, centralian rough knob-tailed geckos, Stimson’s python, spiny leaf stick insects and huge Goliath stick insects.

For their shows, this group will present crocodiles, pythons up to 3.5 metres, goannas, frill neck lizards, turtles, a parrot and even a fluffy marsupial (sugar glider or ruffous bettong).

Also, throughout the day, this group will bring out a host of animals for people to touch and hold.

With the theme at this year’s show being ‘Anzac,’ the show will have the Casey-Cardinia Library hosting Marg Dennis (WWI activity) in the afternoon in the library (part of the hall complex).

The show committee has also invited the South Eastern Art Network (SECAN) to be involved in a one-day project to transform an old rusty shipping container into a tribute to the real ‘workhorses’ of World War I. The pavilion also has a kinder and primary school Anzac theme for the school art display, where the Pakenham RSL president, Gary Elliott, will be presenting commemorative trophies on the day. The Junior Personality competition will take front stage at 1pm. And this year extra prize money is on offer for the Iron Man/Woman/ Junior event, dog high jump, gumboot throw and paper plane competitions.

This year the dog show will be held on Sunday 22 March and up to 1000 entries are expected.

Show president Geoff Young said this week that the committee had worked extremely hard over the past 12 months in planning for the 2015 show.

He also praised local people for their continued support for the show.

“In planning this year’s show, we have hopefully got back to the true meaning of the agricultural show in the local community.

“Also noticeable is the added interest in the show from multicultural groups, community groups and business groups.

“This is wonderful, and it helps us in our endeavours to make this annual event the premier attraction within Cardinia Shire,’’ Mr Young said.

The Show committee comprises a dedicated group of people of all ages.

A ONE-DAY project is due to transform a rusty old shipping container into a tribute to the real workhorses of World War I. But instead of honouring Diggers, the challenge outside Pakenham Hall and Library complex at the PB Ronald Reserve will be to highlight the efforts of horses that were drafted to the frontline. Mindful of the Anzac Centenary commemorations, the show committee asked the South Eastern Contemporary Art Network (SECAN) to design a themed picture that would beautify the old rusty shipping container that stored all the show and events equipment.

While the troops and all the support personnel and their families will never be forgotten, organisers are asking that the thousands of horses, sourced from Australia’s farms and stables, deployed as an important part of the war effort, should also be remembered.

They worked this country’s farms, pulling wagons laden with local produce such as spuds, apples and milk to markets and left Australia to pull cannons, hospital carts and supply wagons across the battlefields of Europe throughout the war.

Their toil is to be remembered in the new design that will incorporate purple poppies which have become the internationally accepted symbol of remembrance for all animals lost in war. After the conflict, the surviving horses remained to work on returning the war-ravaged land of the dead back into productive farmland for the living.

The public is being invited to come along and view this amazing transformation on show day Saturday 21 March. The completed container is due to be on show at the Pakenham dawn service on Anzac Day.

This year Harmony Day will again be celebrating Cardinia’s rich cultures within the community at the Show.

Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home - from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world.

By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can celebrate multiculturalism in Australia and how Cardinia’s migrants and refugees are contributing to a diverse and harmonious community. Some of the cultural events taking place are: A variety of multicultural dance exhibitions, African drumming, art workshops and children’s activities together with multicultural resource information.

The Chilean Folk Dance Group Violeta Parra will be one of the groups participating. It is a notfor-profit organisation established in the South East suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, in 1988.

They have been actively showcasing the cultural dances of Chile for the Australian community for over 27 years dancing at charities, fundraisers, festivals and private functions.

The association’s main goal is to pass on the diverse cultural traditions of Chile through the art of music and dance as well as to embrace, respect and contribute to multiculturalism in a rich, diverse Australia.

Violeta Parra has significantly contributed to the multicultural community of Melbourne for many years and is a familiar and respected dance group with Multicultural Arts Victoria, Victorian Multicultural Arts Commission and City of Casey.

The group consists of dancers from as young as five years old and welcome students from all ages and races to learn the art of Chilean dancing.

The dancing is based on traditional styles from the many different regions of Chile such as Polynesian styles from Easter Island, the vibrant styles of the North, the South, religious, Indigneous and the most famous Central Cueca.

A special screening of Children of the Crocodile by local producer Marsha Emerman is sure to be a favourite of many at 11am at Living Learning. The documentary captures the moment in time when East Timor won its freedom as well as the journey of Elizabeth and Cidalia who discover the new connections to the homeland they fought for, but never knew.

After the screening at Living Learning Pakenham at 11am, Bernardo Duarte, an East Timorese artist who was involved in the events depicted in the film and its production will hold a Q and A session.

THE Narre Warren History Group last week held a special conference investigating the contribution of Australian women to the war effort in World War I. Jenny Baker, a passionate member of the Narre Warren and District Family History Group, ran the discussion following the creation of her website, ‘Looking for the Evidence’ - an active database collating the names and known facts about Australian Women who were involved in WWI. Ms Baker’s hour-long presentation took place ahead of next month’s Anzac Day, which also marks the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli.

Asked to speak to schools about the involvement of women in WWI, Ms Baker has been collating information on this topic since 2007 and has so far been able to include 962 names in the database.

She said the number of women who died while serving in WWI stood out.

“One of the things I had to look at when I was doing this program for the schools was to look at questions the children might ask me,” Ms Baker told the audience.

“One of the questions that always came up was - how many women died in WWI? “Not even the War Memorial could give me a straight answer.

“It sent me on a quest of nine months of looking at trying to find out how many women actually did die during WWI and I can tell you that two weeks ago,

Ms Baker said that because not all the women were part of an Australian military service, rather they were involved in a “civilian-type service”, they “don’t get on anybody’s war memorial.”

The names Ms Baker has managed to gather for the database highlight women from a range of different organisations, with many but certainly not all, belonging to nursing and medical groups.

The organisations these women served include the Royal Australian Navy Nurses (RAN Nurses), the Territorial Force Nursing Service (TFNS), the Australian Veterinary Hospital, the Salvation Army Nurses, the American Red Cross, the Australian Munitions Workers and the American Red Cross, among many others.

There were also members of the Women’s Royal Naval Ser-

vice, the Women’s Royal Air Force, Women’s Legion Motor Drivers, stowaways, and more.

To become a stowaway, women would try and disguise themselves as a man in the aim of actually fighting in the war.

“A lot of what you’re going to see here tonight, you won’t find at the Australian War Memorial,” Ms Baker said.

“They have a policy of only covering Australian military units. So anything that’s not an Australian military unit, you will not find a lot of information - if any - at the Australian War memorial.

By RUSSELL BENNETT THE next wave of Pakenham fitness models is set to make their mark under the bright lights of the big stage.

Following in the footsteps of the likes of fellow Voyage Fitness member’s Sheree Smith and Anita Hynes, Emma Greene and Tiffany Hillard are gearing up for the Australasian Natural Bodybuilding competition later this month in Altona.

Greene started her journey in June last year and made it her goal to become a bikini competitor after being inspired

by American star Nikki Blackketter.

“She pretty much said that if she could do it, anyone could do it and that’s what’s kept me going,” said Greene, who started training with renowned local trainer Bec McSweeny last year.

“I joined up with Bec because I knew that she got results, that she trained really hard, and that she had a great technique,” Greene said.

“I started that in September and I plan to compete on 29 March in a bikini competition for the first time.”

Greene has learnt about the different muscle groups, and proper training methods during her preparation so far both of which will hold her in good stead well after she decides to stop competing.

“I used to come to the gym and I would just do this exercise and that exercise, and I had no idea what muscles I was actually training,” she said.

“Bec has taught me what I’m actually training and how to train it.

“I think it’s given me more confidence and I’ve definitely toned up - I’ve developed muscle and I’ve lost seven kilograms since December.”

Greene said anyone could go down a similar path - it’s just about self-belief.

Warriors through the looking glass

Hillard’s journey, meanwhile, started after she had her daughter (who is now two-and-a-half). Her original goal was to head back to the gym to lose her “baby weight”, but then she set herself another mark to reach for.

“I was back at the gym but it was for no particular purpose,” she said.

“My trainer then asked me if I’d ever thought about competing - I hadn’t and I’d never seen anything like it before.”

Hillard competed for the first time last year - as a fitness model - and has

since relocated to Voyage in Pakenham.

Both Greene and Hillard have an eye on entering other competitions later this year, and they both agree - training is addictive.

“Once you see how fit and healthy you can be, and once you see the results - it definitely is (addictive),” Hillard said.

“You don’t realise how strong and powerful you could be until you actually give it a crack. Once you give it a go, you realise you can do it - and you can do more. It’s empowering. You just want to keep pushing yourself to see how far you can go and how strong you can be.”

THE Pakenham Warriors’ men were comprehensively outplayed on Saturday night in their first game of the Big V Division 2 basketball season, going down by 16 points to Craigieburn, 71-55.

The Eagles, relegated from Division 1 at the end of last season, gave the new-look Warriors a lesson in intensity on both ends of the floor; while the Pakenham side struggled to convert open looks.

Craigieburn shot just 35 per cent from the floor, while Pakenham shot a meagre 23 per cent.

But it’s hardly all doom and gloom for a Warriors side full of a host of new faces.

“This is pretty much a new squad and it’ll take time for things to gel,” said Pakenham coach Jeff Reid.

“We got plenty of looks, we just struggled to convert - right from the start.”

The Warriors got out to an early 5-2 lead but from there the Eagles went on an 11-0 run and were never headed for the rest of the contest.

Pakenham pulled the margin back to six at half-time (34-28) but Craigieburn reignited after the break and took a 54-37 lead into the final quarter.

In addition to the poor shooting from both sides, there was a whopping 40 combined turnovers for the game - a sure sign that both teams were still dusting off the pre-season cobwebs.

The strong-bodied Mark Welch was outstanding for the home-town Eagles with 11 points and eight rebounds, recording a near double-double in just 19 minutes on-court.

Jonathan Maybank, meanwhile finished with 12 points and nine rebounds - six of those on the offensive glass.

Hayden Davey once again led Pakenham with 17 points and eight boards, while guard Savin Lopez finished with 11 and six.

But Pakenham’s numbers on the offensive end were well down across the board, showing just how much improvement is left in the side.

Reid said he was “really happy” with Davey’s intent on both ends of the floor, adding: “I was pleased with the way the guys who didn’t play a lot of minutes ran the game out”.

But the Pakenham coach said there would again be an emphasis on lifting the Warriors’ talk and intensity for their next game against Mornington this Saturday night from 7pm at ‘The Colosseum’ at Cardinia Life in Pakenham.

Finally, on the injury front, the Warriors received a boost during the week with the damage to Simo Pajdic’s knee not as bad as first feared. Reid admitted the initial worry was an ACL injury - which would have ruled Pajdic out for up to 12 months - but instead he will be sidelined for between six to eight weeks.

Demons aim to dominate

By RUSSELL BENNETT WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION PREMIER DIVISION - GRAND FINAL PREVIEW KOOWEERUP has been the team of the past decade in the top flight of the West Gippsland Cricket Association, and this weekend the Demons are aiming for immortality.

Not since the late 1960s to mid1970s has a WGCA side won four first XI premierships in six years.

Of all clubs, it was Kooweerup that achieved the feat back then.

But these Demons will be out to re-write the record books of the Premier era on the weekend at Beaconsfield’s Holm Park Road when they take on their arch-rival Cardinia in a repeat of last season’s decider.

After rolling Tooradin and Merinda Park respectively in the semifinals on the weekend, Cardinia and Kooweerup will face off for the fifth time in a WGCA top tier grand final since the 2006/07 decider at Paken-

ham’s Toomuc Reserve.

And there’s not much - if anything - they don’t know about each other. While some of the players have changed over the years, the two teams’ tough, uncompromising style of cricket has remained. It’s a trademark shared by both.

So much of top-level cricket takes place between the ears at the best of times, but this weekend at Beaconsfield that statement will be elevated to a new stratosphere.

Vivid, painful memories of the Demons’ triumph last season are still firmly etched in the minds of many of Cardinia’s first XI. Set just 159 for victory, the wounded Bulls were rolled for just 126.

So, Cardinia skipper Neil Barfuss, player-coach Simon Parrott, aggressive stroke-maker Alex Nooy, wicket-keeper Luke Turner, and spearhead Dean Henwood will line up for the anthem on Saturday with one thing on their minds - payback.

Kooweerup legend Matt Davey played a key role with the ball in his side’s semi-final win over Merinda Park. The Demons are set to once again face Cardinia in a grand final.

Make no mistake about it, either. The mind games have already started between the two sides. With so little likely to separate them onfield, both Cardinia and Kooweerup are searching for every competitive advantage they can get.

“We’re very happy to be in a grand final but we’re not finished yet,” said Barfuss.

“We owe them one.”

Yet, the skipper of a side that’s so far undefeated this season refuses to buy into its win-loss record. His men have had a few wake-up calls along the way.

“The undefeated thing doesn’t matter anymore - this is a grand final now.

“There’s only one game left and that’s the one that matters.”

Barfuss didn’t hesitate when it came to naming a potential Kooweerup match-winner outside of Chris O’Hara and skipper Michael Giles at the top of the order.

“You can’t go past Matty Davey,” he said.

“He could break the game open on either day - he’s done it before, having played in all those premierships.”

Barfuss said Kooweerup - with their proven track record - deserved to go into the game as favourites.

Unsurprisingly, Giles disagrees.

“It’s a real toss of the coin, I mean, how do you tip someone?” he said.

“They’ve got to go in as favourites - they’re undefeated this year.”

But Giles has also played in a number of losing grand finals - as have O’Hara and Davey.

“We know the adulation that comes with winning, but also the disappointment of losing,” he said.

Sport doesn’t build character - it reveals it. Now we wait until Saturday to see what will be revealed at Holm Park Road.

Teams charge for finals

By DAVID NAGEL THE trophy cabinets at the Officer and Pakenham Cricket Clubs may be about to swell this weekend with both clubs fielding five sides in WGCA grand finals.

Officer, the Bullants, have three senior and two junior teams involved while the Lions have four senior sides and their under-17s primed for success.

Pakenham president Phil Anning said it takes a lot of hard work for the clubs to capitalise on the growth of the south-east corridor.

“Obviously the growth of the area has something to do with it but it’s a wonderful achievement for both clubs to have that many teams go through,” Anning said.

“From our club’s point of view I know the committee, coaches and players have all worked really hard to achieve this type of success.

“And full credit must go to Officer because it

was only two years ago that it was struggling onfield and its junior numbers were down... that’s a great achievement for their club.”

Anning said that while the club was disappointed not to have its Premier Division side involved in finals this season, the weekend can still provide a real positive moving forward.

“At (Peter) Bun O’Hare’s funeral last year it was mentioned that he thought it was important to win premierships, in any grade, to create a winning culture at a club,” he said.

“We’ve sort of taken that philosophy on board and hope we can bring a few wins home on the weekend.”

Anning said that if he was forced to pick one, the under-17 title is the one he would most like to bring home.

“I reckon it’s been at least 20 years since we played in an under-17 grand final, let alone won one,” he said.

Simple words from Pakenham Warriors women’s coach Darren Thomas after his side was humbled in its BIG V debut.

Pakenham was outclassed pillar to post by Casey Cavaliers in a 24-96 point drubbing in the Warriors’ inaugural clash in the BIG V Division-2 Women’s competition.

With a side on the rise and likely to contend for the championship, Casey flexed its muscles and brushed aside Pakenham in an extremely one-sided display.

The Warriors rallied after halftime to make some better moves defensively but still struggled to get over the half-way line against a full-court zone.

Once they broke through, shots still didn’t land as Pakenham shot at 20 per cent from the field.

A clash of sisters was the highlight of the night as Pakenham’s Mel Magdich squared off against younger sister Rebecca, who plays for Casey.

Leading the stat-sheet for the Warriors were Natalie Bjelan (6 points, 10 rebounds) and Peta Rhones (5 points).

“We had eight girls that were playing their first BIG V game tonight (Saturday) and it showed where we are in the grand scheme of things and what we need to work on,” coach Darren Thomas said.

“When we didn’t have the ball and set up our defence I thought we were ok, but they’ve obviously got some strong scorers and good shooters and whether or not they would have scored I don’t know.

“We’ll be better - they won’t get us by 75 next time.”

Pakenham plays its first home match on Saturday as it tips off against Mornington from 5pm at Cardinia Life.

Little leader of the pack

By DEREK OGDEN THE CR-V has always been the king of the castle in Honda SUV-land ahead of the HR-V and MDX, although CR-V wasn’t the first such Honda to appear.

That was left to the HR-V way back in 1999.

The small sports utility vehicle was considered ahead of its time, mainly because it was one of the first to gain a low emission vehicle exhaust emission standard.

It achieved an amazing 80 per cent fewer emissions than Australian regulations of the day required.

As they say, you can’t keep a good dog down and the pup recently made a return to the Honda SUV stable in a much different guise to the original.

There’s also a little bit of magic on offer, with Honda’s innovative Magic Seat system, which can be configured in 18 different ways, making for versatile cargo carrying capability.

The new HR-V comes in four variants - VTi, VTi-S, VTi-L and VTi-L ADAS - going to market from $24,990 to $33,990, plus on-road costs.

Honda’s ADAS is a system of advanced active safety features including forward collision warning, lane departure warning and high-beam support.

Gone is the square, upright stance of last century.

In its place is a compact SUV very much of today.

The Honda HR-V... it's as if it had never been away.

Edgy lines brought together in a sleek silhouette, with the latest lighting technology including LED headlamps and the ubiquitous daytime running lights setting the ball rolling up front.

Although leaning towards a coupe in its exterior styling, a fact emphasised by sharply raked windscreen, bold grille and flared wheel arches plus concealed handles positioned in the door edge close to a quarter light to produce a two-door effect, there is no lack of interior space.

A clearly arranged instrument lay-

out is designed to involve the driver and front-seat passenger.

Occupants are put at ease in seats clothed in soft-weave European fabric in the VTi-L test vehicle we borrowed, quality leather - with bases lengthened to those of most luxury sedans.

Honda HR-V offers advanced audio, information and connectivity features such as seven-inch touch screen; Bluetooth connectivity for Apple and Android systems, including audio streaming; Siri, compatible with

iPhone; and HDMI audio and video playback.

The front-wheel-drive HR-V is powered by a 1.8-litre four-cylinder single (yes, single) overhead cam engine mated with Honda’s continuously variable automatic transmission.

The engine puts out 105 kilowatts of power at 6500 rpm and 172 Newton metres of torque at 4300 revs, while using, the maker claims, between 6.6 and 6.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres, depending on the model, on the

combined urban / highway cycle.

Carbon dioxide emissions of between 155 and 160 g per kilometre are stated.

The test VTi-L recorded 6.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the motorway and was entrenched in the upper eights in town tripping.

As well as the normal suite of passive and active safety systems, the top-of-the-range VTi-L ADAS incorporates a new range of safety technology - Honda’s advanced driver assist system - designed to complement the driver’s input.

Forward collision warning, above 15 kilometres per hour, warns of a slowing vehicle ahead with a visible and audible signal in the multifunction display.

The HR-V’s focus on state-of-theart technology, contemporary styling and dynamic performance should go a long way to making sure this happens.
