Student in emergency airlift
A PAKENHAM Secondary College student was airlifted to hospital yesterday morning in a critical state due to an undisclosed medical condition after paramedics were called to the school. An ambulance spokesman said the teenage girl had suffered a cardiac arrest. “She was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition," he said. Paramedics were called to the school at 9am to treat the girl. An ambulance helicopter, which landed in the middle of the school oval while four ambulance units were parked at the front of the school, took off with the patient about 10.30am. “The whole school is in lockdown,” a school representative said in the school car park. “I cannot say anymore.”

PAKENHAM was at the epicentre of an earthquake on Tuesday night but most people slept right through it. Locals, who slept right through the 2.8 magnitude earthquake, woke-up to find the town was the focus of the morning’s biggest news story. “The whole house slept right through it,” Dylan wrote on the Gazette’s Facebook page. The earthquake hit about 11.39pm on Tuesday 10 March at a depth of 10 kilometres on the corner of Pakenham
Road and Army Road, 10 kilometres north of Pakenham. It was closely followed by a magnitude 1.3 aftershock at 3.18am. But some locals had a more severe reaction to the earth tremor. Heather Donald, who lives off Army Road, likened the quake to an “explosion”; which sent her and her mother running onto the street where worried neighbours were gathered. “We were both sitting on the couch watching TV when all of a sudden, there were two massive explosions,”
the 25-year-old said. “The dogs were going crazy and the parrots were flapping about. We went out onto the road and a few neighbours were out there. We all thought it came from the nearby petrol station.” Fellow Pakenham resident Bill Boyer told a media crew the earthquake felt like a train roaring through his house. Geoscience Australia Seismologist Steve Tatham said they received more than 300 calls from people reporting they had felt the earthquake within 50 kilometres around from the epicentre.
“We had a couple of reports from suburban areas like Melbourne CBD but the vast majority of reports came from the immediate vicinity,” he said. Former Berwick mayor Syd Pargeter OAM said the quake was unmistakable in Harkaway. “I thought it was quite strong,” he said. “Most talked about hearing a noise, rattling, shaking and a few loose objects jostled about.” Geoscience Australia did not receive any reports of property damage or injuries.

Former mayor slams new HQ By BEN CAMERON CARDINIA Shire Council’s new $25 million Officer headquarters is a noose around the neck of ratepayers, former mayor Garry Runge believes. The council officially opened its new headquarters two weeks ago with a visit from the Governor of Victoria. However Mr Runge, now working in the office of La Trobe MP Jason Wood, said the council should have developed its old facilities in Henty Way considering the “crazy” price tag of new buildings. “I don’t agree with what they’ve
done,” he said. “I think it’s putting a noose around the ratepayers’ necks for a long time, by buying that. “I think it’s made it very difficult for the ratepayers, who have to pay for it.” Mayor at the time Graeme Moore said the council’s move to new offices would deliver a range of operational and community benefits, consolidating all indoor staff into one location to provide greater organisation efficiency, improved customer service and easier access to the council. However Mr Runge also questioned the centre’s location.
“It’s stuck in the middle of nowhere,” he said. “It’s not in the middle of Cardinia, Pakenham is the centre of Cardinia.” “I would have elected to stay where they were and stay on the hill. “I don’t agree with the location, and the expense is outstanding, it’s crazy.” A spokeswoman for the Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services said plans for a health hub at the council’s former buildings would be announced “in due course”. “We know this is a fast growing region in Melbourne and that
the community wants to access key health services close to home,” she said. Mr Runge also said a potential new satellite office at the Emerald Community Hub would be handy for hills residents, although he disagrees with them in principle. “I don’t think they need satellite offices,” he said. “The further we move forward, the more we do things digitally. “But I understand people from the hills have to come all the way to Officer. “So one in Emerald would be advantageous for people who want to talk face-to-face.”

A 20-YEAR-OLD woman is fighting for her life after her car was pushed 200 metres down the railway track when it was struck by a train at an Officer crossing. Pakenham police Sergeant Nathan Prowd said the driver was in a critical but stable condition after being trapped in her Suzuki Swift for an hour at the Brunt Road intersection. He said the crossing’s boom gates were working at the time. “It is my understanding she is still in a medically induced coma suffering significant injuries,” he said on Monday. IT WAS 12 years ago when Deb Bailey’s son, Ryan, was diagnosed with type one diabetes. And now more than ever Deb is campaigning to raise greater awareness about T1D, an illness she still believes people don’t know enough about. Later this month, on Saturday 28 March, Deb will hold a special T1D community event at the Eden Rise Shopping Centre in Berwick, with all money raised to be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Ryan Bayley, 14, was diagnosed with T1D at two and a half years of age. “Twelve years on, and I am still on a mission to raise awareness for T1D,” Deb said. “November last year, I decided to create a T1D community event. The main reason for this idea is because every time I go out to talk to members of the public about T1D, a lot of people are not even aware of this disease. “So I thought what better way to reach out to the public by creating an awareness event. I sent a proposal through, to host a T1D event at Eden Rise, and they did not hesitate, they could understand how important it is to raise awareness for T1D in our community.” The event is expected to run from 10am to 3pm, with a range of stalls open and prizes available throughout the day. Dillon has worked for him for nearly a year. “I say don’t judge people,” Mr Toogood said. “Dillon’s got tatts all over him but he’s the sweetest bloke you could meet. “A genuine battler… would do anything for his kids… a great work ethic. “It’s been a really positive experience for me.” Mission Australia state director Kylee Bates said the Department of Human Services-funded program helped to break the disadvantaged cycle for people in Greater Dandenong and Casey but it takes “intensive time”. The program has found an ongoing job for 38 of its 80 clients - who are connected to DHS by way of public housing, waiting lists, a disability, child protection or youth justice. They are a clientele that have previously slipped through the job network support system. They need to build up
job-ready skills, find their goals and bolster their self-confidence. “Being unemployed is not just bad news for people in the short term - the longer they languish on welfare the harder it will become for them to break into the workforce,” Ms Bates said. “Their ability to generate employment takes some intensive time. That investment does pay off.” She says the success of her program depends on local businesses getting involved. Just 20 per cent of Greater Dandenong’s workforce is comprised of locals. “Part of it is activating local employers and helping them to see there’s potential talent in front of them. “Those people may need to be supported in the early stages to be longterm employees in the business. “It’s about the community and only the community can make it work.” For details on the program, call Rosemary Nelson, 9213 2500 or 0427 957 013.

Emma King, chief executive of Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS), said the “clear missing part” of the government’s policies was the community sector. “We’re the ones working with those vulnerable. We think we play a constructive part in getting people back to work.” She said the philanthropicallybacked Doveton College project which combined school with early childhood and family services - was an example of how to link unemployed parents with work and study providers. “Long-term this is cost-effective but, most importantly, it’s going to turn lives around.” Last week Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams raised her concerns about the human consequences of the car industry’s “pending departure” in parliament. “That is 3400 families that are looking down the barrel of a gun as they face some pretty tough times.” Ms Williams said the region could remain at the forefront of manufacturing’s changing face. Employment Minister Jacinta Allan listed programs to get the state back to work such as incentives for employers hiring long-term jobless, youth and retrenched workers, and restoring TAFE funding. Ms Allan said the government set 50 per cent local content benchmarks for its train and tram orders - which would assist local companies such as Dandenong-based Bombardier Transportation.

A RADICAL rethink of the State Government’s jobs plan is needed to tackle double-digit unemployment rates in Melbourne’s south-east, say manufacturing and social services leaders. The State Government, facing a rising Victorian unemployment rate of 6.6 per cent, has placed job creation high on its agenda. According to Federal Government estimates, in September the southeast’s highest jobless suburbs include Dandenong (20.5 per cent), Doveton (20.4 per cent), Cranbourne (10.5 per cent), Hampton Park (10.2 per cent) and Narre Warren (7.3 per cent) The region is heading for more potential pain - with 3400 local jobs linked to the departing automotive industry. South East Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance executive director Adrian Boden said more government funds are needed to help manufacturers innovate and grow. “Banks aren’t lending money to manufacturers, there are hardly any venture capitalists and governments say they aren’t handing out money. “If we don’t invest here, manufacturers have no option but to go overseas.” Mr Boden said the qualifications of skilled migrants were unrecognised and underutilised and local business needed a “level playing field” to compete for government contracts. He said the new government’s decisions had already penalised manufacturers, such as 48 companies within SEMMA set to benefit from the abandoned East West Link project.

AFTER five years without a steady job, single dad Dillon Moon says it took time and a pinch of luck to rejoin the workforce. Dillon had quit his job as a civil drainer to care for his primary-school aged kids after a family breakdown. But despite his efforts, he couldn’t find a boss flexible enough to give him about 20 hours a week between school drop-off and pick-up times. Dillon’s break came when he got help from a Connections to Employment program - a pilot run by Mission Australia to tackle entrenched unemployment in Melbourne’s south east. Victoria’s unemployment rate has been steadily climbing to 6.5 per cent. There are south-east suburbs that dwarf this figure, such as Dandenong (20.5 per cent), Doveton (20.4 per cent), Dandenong North (11.1 per cent), Cranbourne (10.5 per cent), Noble Park (10.5 per cent), Hallam (9.9 per cent) and Springvale (9.8 per cent). Dillon, 46, retrained - gaining a Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways. With the help of the program, he found a job as a mower and gardener with Pakenham business owner Denis Toogood who runs a handyperson enterprise Denis Around The House. “Denis has stepped in not just as a boss but as a friend,” Dillon said. He says he no longer worries so much, or has to fret about not taking his kids out to do things on the weekends. “There’s no better feeling than picking up your kids after doing a good day’s work.” Mr Toogood set up the business after being retrenched from his paintmaking job. He says the goal of the business is to help others - and has been prepared to give the previously long-term unem-

STUDENTS from Tooradin Primary School put the pedal to the metal when the school entered three teams into the first Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) competition for the year. Teams from across the state, including one interstate side, gathered at Casey Fields on the last weekend of February ahead of six hours of speed and manoeuvring. Tooradin Primary School entered two student teams and one community team to give parents the chance a go at keeping up. Early years co-ordinator Rachel Davies said students participated in intensive training in the lead up to the event to develop their fitness, team work and understanding of the event. She said students worked towards helping each other, devising strategies and encouraged each other through all their achievements.
“Winning the race isn’t as important as setting personal goals and helping each other to pace themselves,” Ms Davies said. “This is only the first in a series of races throughout the year including Wonthaggi, Knox, Bendigo and Maryborough and each race track has its own challenges and thrills.” Following their first competition for the year, students from Tooradin will now prepare for the next race by learning about healthy diets to fuel their bodies, exercise to build muscle capacity and learn about the qualities that make a good team. “This program promotes so many valuable life skills but above all else it is great fun,” Ms Davies said. “We were immensely proud of how well all our students participated in the race and their excitement and commitment will serve them well for the next event.“

A drug forum held at Narre Warren on Wednesday night tackled the issue of drugs and empowered sporting clubs with knowledge to help prevent illicit drug use. In information released by Victoria Police Media, the force acknowledged that while it is difficult to place an exact figure on the link between ice and the rise in crime, “we do know that there remains a strong correlation between people who are detected for drug offences and their involvement in other crimes.� Also included in the information released was the fact that evidence suggests that most consumers purchase ice from people they know or who they associate with, such as friends, or friends of friends. Victoria Police said it undertakes a range of actions including the deployment of specialised task forces at all levels of the drug trade, from regional or localised operations through to higher level border controls. Mr Monroe said the program
in Narre Warren last night was one of 19 implemented across Victoria, provoked by two things. “The concern in the community about the apparent increase in ice prompted it,� he said. He also added that the success of the Goods Sports Program held on reducing alcohol in sports also caused them to host a similar one in relation to drugs. A DRUG forum held at Narre Warren last night (Wednesday) highlighted the need for a formal drug policy to be implemented at sporting clubs throughout the City of Casey to help stop the plague of drugs. The forum, which focused on a number of different drugs including crystalline methylamphetamine (ice), hosted a panel of guest speakers including National Policy Manager at the Australian Drug Foundation, Geoff Monroe. The forum followed a State Government announcement last week which saw the release of more than $45 million for an Ice Action Plan to reduce the supply, demand and harm of this deadly drug. As part of the plan, the government will implement new measures to reduce the growing supply of ice, crackdown on labs and introduce tough new laws to stop dealers and manufacturers. It will also help further support and provide assistance to families of those affected and the frontline workers who deal with the harsh realities of ice consumption. Victoria Police data indicates a significant rise in the frequency of use and availability of ice, with related offences almost tripling from 1274 in 2010 to 3748 in 2014.

Guns found in car A MAN was arrested in Clyde North last Thursday after police allegedly found guns, ammunition and a baton in his car. The Pakenham man was discovered by police patrolling the area as part of the new Operation Stance, and was found sitting in his car in Selandra Rise just after 12.30am. Police searched the 24-year-old's car which was parked outside a vacated premises, and allegedly found two sawn-off rifles, ammunition, a baton, drug paraphernalia and what appeared to be a counterfeit $50 note. The man was then arrested and later charged with two counts of possessing a general category handgun, possessing a prohibited weapon, possession of drug of dependence and possession of ammunition and a counterfeit note. He was bailed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 1 June.
Man mugged A 34-YEAR-OLD male on his way to work was the victim of a robbery in the early hours of Saturday morning. Around 1.11am on Saturday 7 March four males approached a man walking along the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne while two demanded money and attempted to steal his bag. The victim refused at first before he was threatened after which he handed it over. The four men then took off on foot down the South Gippsland Highway where the bag was later recovered. Police ask that anyone with information contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

HILLCREST Christian College was among one of the lucky schools to witness a special helicopter landing on the school’s oval last week. On Friday 6 March, students welcomed crew members of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. The landing was a reward for the school which successfully completed the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter’s School Program, designed to teach young students about the importance of not-for-profit emergency services and the work they do in the local community. Patience tested for paramedics By LACHLAN MOORHEAD JUST weeks after speaking out about being the victim of assault while on the job, paramedic Bracha Rafael was witness to another act of violence towards medical staff. Ms Rafael, who regularly patrols the Endeavour Hills area, said she recently saw an injured and intoxicated man she’d transported to hospital attempt to hit a male nurse and verbally abuse him. The incident came just a couple of shifts after Ms Rafael spoke to the media about two separate occasions in which she was threatened and also the victim of attempted sexual assault. New figures released last month showed there were 314 reports of assault and aggression towards paramedics in 2013-’14 - almost one per day. “Two or three shifts after the initial press conference, I helped transport a guy who was intoxicated and had an injury. He had been quite agitated on scene and we’d requested police but he had so far been compliant and we decided we were comfortable taking him to hospital,” Ms Rafael said. “But as soon as the male nurse came in, the patient was up and swinging at him and making a barrage of verbal assaults - what could they have done to prevent it?” Unfortunately, this show of patient aggression towards medical staff and paramedics is

When she was still working as a graduate paramedic, the 25-year-old was threatened and intimidated by a woman, whose seemingly unconscious mother needed help. “At some point, we’d requested police, then when a second paramedic arrived he knew the patient, and within a couple of minutes she’d woken up and demanded that we leave,” Ms Rafael said. “We were happy to leave, we packed our bags away. I jumped into the passenger seat of the
ambulance and the daughter pulled the door open and started abusing me. “She was very aggressive, and she never at any point offered any particular rationale as to why she was so angry.” Ms Rafael said she’d been very shaken by the incident. “I’d frozen when it happened, and I was concerned by that,” she said. “I felt my actions weren’t helpful, I needed to have a plan if that happened again. I needed to take different actions.” And it did happen again, this time when Ms Rafael was working as a qualified paramedic. While transporting another intoxicated and injured man the patient attempted to touch her inappropriately inside the ambulance. “He spent most of the trip dozing and when I was checking his blood pressure I felt his hand between my thighs and up my legs towards my groin,” she said. “I said what the f*** are you doing? It was the only time I’d sworn at a patient. It was effective, he woke up, and he appeared remorseful and I demanded that the patient say sorry.” While she felt she’d handled the incident well under the circumstances, Ms Rafael admitted she wouldn’t have been able to treat any other patients that night due to her nerves.

CRANBOURNE’S Nida Iqbal is urging women to hold their heads high. “I am very proud of being a female… I am very proud of being who I am,” she told a Women’s Health in the South East (WHISE) forum last Friday. “I would not change it for a day.” The celebration ahead of International Women’s Day on Sunday 8 March reflected this year’s theme, Make It Happen. Almost 30 women received awards, including Luz Restrepo, who felt frightened and isolated when she arrived in Australia from Colombia in 2010. Luz started to make and sell crafts with other women in similar circumstances, and support group SisterWorks was born. She received the Service to the Community award. Nigerian-born Abiola Ajetomobi was awarded the Future Leader title for juggling studies, work and family life while raising funds and collecting goods to support other Nigerian migrants. Tiffany Hughes, 16, won the Youth Achievement award for her school involvement and leadership. Family violence survivor Carla Gagliardi, profiled in the News late last year, received the Inspirational Woman title for her work to change laws around naming and shaming those who breached intervention orders (IVOs). “When I began this journey, it wasn’t to be inspiring or achieve recognition,” she said.

Tears welled up in Nida’s eyes from the moment the guest speaker started to address the forum. The 34-year-old explained that her mother was born into the Pashtun majority in Afghanistan but found love with a man in the persecuted Hazara minority. Her family disowned her and Nida’s father was captured and hanged for supporting equal rights shortly after they married. The 25-year-old widow then found out she was pregnant with Nida. It gave her a reason to go on. The family fled to Pakistan where they received death threats for speaking out against the Taliban. They arrived in Australia in 1998 with no English skills. “I have not stopped learn-
ing… I have not stopped struggling,” Nida said. “Refugees are not burdens. “We are broken but we are resilient. “Give us an opportunity and we could do anything.” Nida has since completed a raft of studies and is now studying law. Any suggestions she should hold back because of her gender make her more determined. “I never look at it as something negative,” she said. Keynote speaker Clementine Ford said there were few days on the calendar about celebrating women. She urged the women in the room to stop worrying about “massaging men’s egos” when speaking about feminism and striving for equality. “Men take up far too much space in the feminist discourse,” she said. “Equality does involve loss… It does involve sacrifice. “This isn’t about your (men’s) feelings, it’s about saving women’s lives.”

Breakfast’s recipe for success By BRIDGET SCOTT owners from BUSINESS throughout the region had a morning filled with food yesterday (Wednesday) when about 200 people turned out for the first event of the Casey-Cardinia Breakfast Series. Renowned authors and television presenters Matthew Evans and Nick Haddow kicked off the series as the guest speakers. Driven by hunger for fresh produce and a good piece of cheese, the two now both reside in Tasmania where they each run their own food businesses. Mr Evans said chefs now say he “moved to the dark side� when he made the choice to become a critic and started to review some of Melbourne’s and Sydney’s top restaurants. Later, he fell in love with the idea of home reared produce and now runs a small farm and grows and prepares his own produce. Mr Evans is also the author of nine books which include Never Order Chicken on a Monday and The Weekend Cook. Mr Haddow, a “failed marine biologist� founded Bruny Island Cheese in 2003 which was awarded the Telstra National Business of the Year in 2013. Matthew and Nick costarred in all four series of Gourmet Farmer. The two also co-authored
Angela McPhee, Fred Campus and Mary Agius.

Current taxation arrangements offer Australians the opportunity to invest in real estate as a way of saving for independence in retirement. However, with the average property investor owning just one rental property and having an income no higher than $80,000, suggestions that the rich are exploiting negative gearing are an exaggeration. "If negative gearing were removed in an environment of the lowest interest rates since the 1950s, Australians would be unlikely to continue to invest in rental properties at current rates," Ms Holzer said. "They would seek better returns elsewhere and, with population growth near record highs, the supply of rental properties would fall short of demand, thereby forcing up rents. "This would place unacceptable pressure on the most vulnerable citizens in our community. "It would also lengthen the amount of time it takes for first home buyers who are renting to save a deposit to buy their first home." Currently, the rate at which rents are rising is slowing down. In fact, rents had an annual growth rate averaging 1.8 per cent in 2014, which means they were rising more slowly than inflation in 2014. If negative gearing were dropped, that situation could change rapidly. "Negative gearing plays a vital role in balancing supply against the demand for rental properties and this helps keep housing affordable for everybody," Ms Holzer said.

Selfies tell a story IT STARTED with a throwaway line. And now Michael Knowles is taking a ‘selfie’ of himself every day for the next year, as part of his own special project. Michael, from Narre Warren South, is almost 90 days into the project, for which he is posing with a different person in a selfie every day – many of whom are local Casey stalwarts. “I started the project one morning when I was getting a haircut with my long-term hairdresser,” he said. “We took a selfie in the mirror of the hairdressing salon with him posing Charlie’s Angels style with the hair dryer. “I stupidly said, ‘I should do this every day for 365 days of the year’.” “And so the next day, I did it again and so the rest is history.” Since starting the project, Michael has taken photos of himself with a range of local identities and community campaigners. When posting each photo to his selfie Facebook page, Michael includes a small biography and background for each person. Michael said some of his favourite selfies include photos with TV personality Coxy, Casey mayor Mick Morland, and a basketball team where the players were also all jockeys.
“It’s really fun, it creates little pictures of people and tells their stories,” Michael said. “People say interesting things. I also work as a specialist vet, so you’ll see a few animals in the photos. “It takes a bit of planning, usually for the week I have a few ideas as to who I will get in the selfies. People are connected with so many people but just don’t realise it. When you start to connect with them you can string heaps together.” Michael has also set his own list of rules to abide by when undertaking the project. The photo must be taken by him, it must be a person or living animal featured in the photo, and it must be taken on the day. “I am also thinking how I can make it a charitable event – been thinking of putting a dollar in a jar for every selfie and then sponsoring a World Vision child at the end of the year when I get there,” Michael said. SINGLE mum Simone can’t put a price on the love for her son. Five-month-old Isaac was born premature at 27 weeks with a hole in his heart, and as a result suffers from chronic lung disease. The little boy relies on five litres of continuous low-flow oxygen administered through nasal prongs to stay alive. Unable to work full-time to be able to care for Isaac, Simone also needs to check on her son every 20 minutes or so throughout the night. This was before TLC for Kids recently provided Simone, from Narre Warren South, with a video baby monitor to help her to check on Isaac. It comes as TLC for Kids joins several Bakers Delight stores in Berwick, Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills to take part in Bundraiser Day. For this event, at least $1 for every pack of hot cross buns sold will be donated to TLC for Kids to go towards helping sick children and their families. Simone, 26, is one of those in need. She was rushed to hospital two months before Isaac was due to arrive, not knowing if her baby would survive. “I was beside myself; I did nothing out of the usual. I was sitting down at dinner with my family and then it happened,” she said. “I said to my mum to take me to hospital straight away.

I felt guilty leaving. “If I could have brought my own blow-up mattress, I would have.”
Simone raises Isaac with great help from her parents and brother, at home in Narre Warren South. “My family are fantastic, honestly I don’t know where it’d be without my parents they’ve been my rock,” she said. “This is by far the hardest thing I’ve done, but it’s also the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done. “You have so much more love for your child, there’s no price on your child. “The amount of costs I had to pay, there’s no price.”

Run Miss Maini run TODAY’S lesson for Beaconhills College students - how to run like Miss Maini. Gemma Maini, as she’s better known away from the college campus and her Year9 classroom, is an elite cross country runner and has earned her ticket to China to represent Australia. Maths and science lessons will be the least of her worries later this month as Maini, 28, from Rye, heads to Guiyang, China as one of Australia’s six female athletes at the World Cross Country Championships. Athletics has always been a big part of Maini’s life, especially during her studies as she spent five years in America at Idaho State University on an athletic scholarship. After her college years where she managed to win a couple of conference races at the NCAA D1 level - she took a bit of time away from competitive running, but the running-bug never left her and eventually the allure of racing dragged her back. That allure is demanding though - as she clocks up to 130km a week on the tracks and paths around Victoria building up the stamina needed to compete on the world stage, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I probably took a year or two off when I came back from college,” Maini said. “I didn’t take it seriously

It’s an eight kilometre race for Maini in China - an undulating grass course with manmade obstacles thrown in for extra measure - but she’s keen to learn a lot from the race and hopefully earn another chance to represent the country. “I honestly have no idea - it came as a surprise that I quali-
fied,” Maini said. “I’ve always dreamed of making an Australian team, but it took me off guard that I made it, so just want to run to the best of my capabilities - run smart, have a good race and soak up the experience and try to learn for future races, if I get another opportunity.” The IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Guiyang, China will be held on 28 March.
AS THE Pakenham Warriors continue to ramp up preparations for their Big V basketball season-opener this Saturday night, they can take plenty out of the weekend’s pre-season tournament. The Division-2 men, this season coached by Warriors favourite son Jeff Reid, came away from their four game fixture at the Dandenong Basketball Stadium with two wins and two losses and showed a marked improvement from Saturday to Sunday. “I was pretty happy with how we played - we really started to bond as a team and as a group,” Reid told the Gazette in the wake of the tournament. The new-look Pakenham side finished fifth in the seventeam Division-2 field, but tied on points with the third-placed Keilor Thunder. “We turned it around from Saturday to Sunday,” he said. “We only scored 33 and 27 in our first two games but Sunday we were much better - in ball movement, execution and shot selection.” Pakenham lost to Collingwood 41-33 on Saturday morning, and then to Maccabi 45-27 later in the day before reversing the trend on Sunday - defeating

Reid said Harry Van Dort and Hayden Davey were two of the Warriors’ standouts from across the weekend. “Hayden does what’s asked of him on both ends of the floor, and he’s already a very good rebounder and he’s still getting better,” Reid said of Davey, adding that Van Dort’s determination and drive also shone through. “We showed real potential
in the pre-season (prior to the tournament), but the boys found some real confidence and came out of their shells on the weekend,” Reid said. It was envisaged that Van Dort would play a crucial role for the Warriors this season providing a real spark as a sixth man, but a knee injury on the weekend to Simo Pajdic could yet present him with even more court time. Reid said he was unsure of the severity of Pajdic’s injury, as he was yet to have scans on his knee at the time the Gazette went to print. As for the most impressive moment of the Warriors’ tournament on the weekend - Reid said that was easy to pinpoint. “We won our last game with .08 left on the clock,” he said. “It was a backdoor alley-oop play to Hayden Davey and he executed it perfectly.” But there’s still plenty of work ahead of the team, which starts its season this Saturday night from 8.15pm at the Craigieburn Leisure Centre against the Eagles. “We need to work on our defensive intensity,” Reid said. “It was much better on the Sunday but it comes from effort and talk. We need to talk more out there.”

Stellar season reaps rewards THE phenomenal season of Pakenham all-rounder Russell Lehman was rewarded on Saturday night when he scooped the pool at the club’s vote count held at Toomuc Reserve. Lehman’s stellar season of 522 runs and 42 wickets saw him poll 28 votes to win not only the Premier Division Player of the Year award but also the Don Jackson Award as club champion. Other winners on the night were Shannon Mitchell (Sub-District), Rod
Berry (C Grade), Dave Nobels (E Grade), Paul Hart (F Grade) and Jeremy Hill (G Grade), but it was Lehman who drew highest praise. “There’s nothing much left to say about Russ,” said Lions skipper Jason Williams after Lehman had scored a fine 63 against Kooweerup on Saturday, to back up his 7/54 on day one. “He’s been phenomenal for us this season and I’m in awe, myself. “He’s just been so consistent

The painstaking dress rehearsal of the past two weeks featuring Cardinia and Tooradin in the West Gippsland Cricket Association’s top flight is finally over and we can get down to business - watching two of the most professional sides in the competition go head-to-head in a do-or-die battle. The Bulls deserve to go into this game as warm favourites, and they will. They’ve shown remarkable consistency all throughout what has so far been an unbeaten season. Skipper Neil Barfuss (504 runs and 33 wickets) has led the way in a stellar 2014/15 campaign that could well result in the Terry Stephenson Medal (for Premier’s best player) being draped around his neck at the league’s presentation night. But Cardinia has had plenty of other strong contributors too, like wicket-keeper batsman Luke Turner (224 runs and 27 dismissals), player-coach Simon Parrott, and breakout performer Dean Henwood.
But of the four teams fighting out this year’s finals series - Cardinia, Merinda Park, Kooweerup and Tooradin - the Gulls have the most upside. Tom Hussey has scored runs for fun all season with 650 at an average of 50, to be exact. But there’s a mountain of improvement left in Aaron Avery and Cal O’Hare. It could only take one of these three to fire and spark Tooradin into another grand final. But the Bulls have been running rampant for too long now. We’re tipping them to knock off the Gulls in the semis for the second time in as many seasons and advance to another decider. MERINDA PARK v KOOWEERUP MANY pundits had Merinda Park missing out on a finals berth this season, and that includes this reporter. It seemed losing Jarrod Armitage, Matt Grayson and - at the time - Dylan Cuthbertson would be too much for the boys from the Snake Pit to overcome. But there was plenty of venom left in the side, and Cuthbertson’s return in the second half of the season has made a huge impact (200 runs at average of 40, to go along with 20 wickets at 13.9).

But Kooweerup is a team built for the finals. Opening batsmen Chris O’Hara and Michael Giles have both struggled with their consistency throughout the season, but
each of them has shown enough in recent weeks to suggest they could again be difference-makers when it counts. And it was only three rounds ago when the Bright twins - John and Ron Jr - tore through the Cobras’ batting line-up. These Demons thrive on finals pressure, and it’s mainly for this reason we’re tipping them in a nail-biter.
Taking the game by the tail By JARROD POTTER DISTRICT CLYDE and Cranbourne Meadows have booked their places in the WGCA District finals after sweeping aside Lyndhurst Vikings and St Francis Xavier respectively. The wickets would fall for Clyde (163) but the best Lyndhurst Vikings (137) efforts weren’t enough to halt the dashing Cougars. James Gilbert (3/33), Jesse Fitzgerald (2/35) and Heath Straughair (2/40) did the damage for the Vikings to leave the Cougars in disarray, once the Clyde skipper Kyle Brooke (16) fell to Straughair. It left a lot of work for the Cougars’ tail-end to burden, but Kane Avard (33 not out) and Nick Miles (30) taught the elder statesmen above them in the order, a thing or 63 about cashing in as the duo notched the match-winning partnership. “We’ve probably had a mixed back end of the year, but since Christmas we’ve come through undefeated right through until now,” Brooke said.
“We’ve come together as a side really, really well and we’ve got some interesting selection decisions to make before next game.” It only took 21 overs on Saturday for Cranbourne Meadows (8/204dec) to finish the job against St Francis Xavier (107) and begin their finals’ campaign as Shaun Matthews (7/21) proved lethal to any crease-bound X-Men. His 17-overs was more than enough to dish out the pain for St Francis Xavier as only Brendan Hunt (28) proved any match for Matthews. Geoff Bradshaw (3/25) was the other chief destroyer as he reaped three wickets across his 10.4 overs. Clyde will host Cranbourne Meadows in one semi-final while Lyndhurst will face Officer in the other finals’ clash. What that will mean in the long run is up for debate, but the signs are promising for Pakenham women’s BIG V basketball team after its biggest match-ups to date in its first pre-season. The Warriors’ women featured in four matches at the BIG V pre-season tournament, held over the long weekend at the Dandenong Basketball Stadium. While there was only one high note for the Warriors - a 40-31 win over Melbourne Uni - coach Darren Thomas was pleased with his charges and their effort ahead of the season proper, which starts on Saturday. “It was an opportunity to see the girls in action - they’d only played the one game prior to that,” Thomas
said. “It was good to see the group work together and see the areas we need to get better at. “Also an eye opener for the girls to see what the competition will be like - with their physical strength and ability with the basketball and skill sets.” Thomas is out for success, but it’s not just in the win/loss column that he’s measuring Pakenham’s worth. He wants to use this season as a proving ground for his young brigade and set the standard and develop a philosophy for future Warriors’ squads. “Our ultimate aim is to create a culture that people want to become a part of and come out as a better player,” Thomas said. “That is what we want to build to with the younger girls. “The 16, 17 and 18-year-olds will play good minutes and experi-
