End of a nursing era involves co-ordinating patient care before, during and after operations. Over the span of her career, Merilyn witnessed a remarkable transformation at the Angliss, with improvements including extensions to the hospital, the addition of a community rehabilitation unit and the implementation of advances in medical technology. “When I first started at the Angliss,
PICKING a favourite moment from her 50 years in nursing is a hard task for Merilyn Xuereb - there have been too many. Merilyn retired earlier this month after 36 years of nursing at The Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully. She held the role of manager of Perioperative Services, a position that
we had one theatre and a recovery room in one of the wards. There are now three theatres at the hospital, so we can treat many more patients,” she said. “A major change has been the technology used in nursing. We see many more people having day procedures because of new technology.” Throughout its transformation,
Merilyn says the hospital has stayed true to its friendly atmosphere and strong focus on patient care. “I love the community feel at the Angliss - everyone has such a ‘can-do’ attitude,” she said. Starting out as a theatre nurse at the Angliss in 1978, she moved up to assume duties as the role of associate unit manager and then to the manager of Perioperative Services 10 years ago.
In retirement, Merilyn plans to carry out renovations on her house, travel and spend more time with her five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. If she absolutely had to choose a highlight, it would be a simple one. “I think my best memory would be the great outcomes we achieved for patients. That was really rewarding.”
