Four people were injured in the head-on collision at Woori Yallock.

Head-on injuries

By KATH GANNAWAY POLICE are appealing for any witnesses after four people were injured in a head-on collision at Woori Yallock last Tuesday.

The driver of a white Holden Commodore had been travelling along the Warburton Highway at 3.06pm when the car swung sharply into the path of oncoming vehicles, before a collision with two vehicles.

The collision occurred just 750 metres west of the Old Warburton High-

way. Four people were injured in the collision, with three critical.

Among the injured were a man, 84, and his wife, 81.

They were later transported to The Alfred via ambulance, but are now in a stable condition.

Another woman, in the third vehicle, suffered injuries to her chest, arm and neck.

She was taken by ambulance to Maroondah Hospital.

The driver of the white Commo-

dore also suffered significant injuries, including fractures to her neck, spine, pelvis and leg.

The driver was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol Sergeant John Morgan said the investigation into the crash was continuing.

“Pending the outcome of the investigation, and toxicology results, there could be some very serious charges involved,” Sgt Morgan said.

“These include conduct endangering life and recklessly causing injury.”

Police would like witnesses to step forward.

Sgt Morgan said this incident also highlighted the importance of on-thespot reporting to police.

Sgt Morgan said if anyone witnessed erratic driving, they should dial triple-zero immediately.

“We’re not always able to stop them, but there may be a police car in the vicinity which can intercept and possibly stop something like this happening,” he said.

“Don’t assume there aren’t going to

be police around.”

Sgt Morgan said police had intercepted many erratic drivers.

“Realistically, we’re not always going to be able to get there within minutes, but there are a lot of cases where we have been ‘Johnny-on-the-spot’,” he said.

“We have potentially saved a fatality.

“And the person who took the time to report has always potentially saved a fatality.”

Bishop on board for coup

By KATH GANNAWAY IT WAS a coup of the best kind for a local politician.

For Casey MP Tony Smith to get Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop to a 7am business breakfast before a crowd of 200 people at Rochford Winery on Wednesday, 18 February, was a big deal.

State Liberal MPs David Hodgett, Christine Fyffe and Cindy McLeish, and Yarra Ranges Mayor Maria McCarthy were among the hand-picked guests who, for the most part, represented business interests from agriculture and timber to tourism, service industries and commerce.

If anyone had called for a split, it’s fair to say the Libs would have had it in the bag.

But there was a genuine and warm welcome all around for Ms Bishop who started with a pre-breakfast meet and greet with Grace Hodgson, the eightyear-old Dixons Creek student whose design was chosen for Mr Smith’s 2014 Christmas card, and Casey 2014 Apprentice/Trainee of the Year, Mount Evelyn hairdresser Mikayla Paulet.

Professor John Funder, AC, from Wandin, reflected the atmosphere of the room when, after Ms Bishop had spoken authoritatively on difficult issues from the Russian/Ukraine situation to Middle East terrorism and Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukamaran on death row in Bali, he said “I have to say how proud I am to be Australian and have you as our Foreign Minister.”

That declaration drew spontaneous and sustained bi-partisan applause, and reflected comments made to the Mail following the breakfast that Ms Bishop was highly regarded as a politician and potential leader.

Prof Funder, who on Australia Day was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia for his work in medical research, sought support for a project he is involved in which aims to set up a children’s hospital in Gaza.

She was, inevitably, asked about Australia’s role, and her personal response, to the situation with the Indonesian Government and the Australians facing execution in Indonesia.

“Are we doing the right thing ...

I know we have to make some effort to change the law in Indonesia, but the old adage is ‘do the crime, do the time’,” was the question.

“They were 20 and 21 at the time,” Ms Bishop said.

“That’s no excuse, but surely we are trying to rehabilitate people who offend ... surely we give someone a second chance.”

She spoke of their remorse and the

difference they were making in prison and said it was not about asking for them to be released.

“I know this is something on which there is a divided view ... in this room, and across Australia,” she said.

“I think it’s a case for the Indonesian Government showing mercy to two Australian citizens.

She spoke with authority, conviction and compassion of the role Australia played when Flight MH17 was shot down over the Ukraine by Russianbacked separatists, saying it was an atrocity in which 38 Australian ‘souls’ were lost.

She said Australia used its position on the UN Security Council to get federal police into the war zone to retrieve the bodies and push for an

independent investigation.

On the Middle East, she said terrorism was a growing phenomenon that was more dangerous, more complex and more global than ever before.

Why that mattered to Australia, she said, was because Australian citizens were fighting with the terrorist organisation and there was the potential for them to return as ‘home-grown’ terrorists.

On local issues, employment was raised with one person saying he was unable to get workers with one young candidate saying he could get more money on the dole.

Ms Bishop said she believed young people if given the opportunity to get a job would take it and said the Work For the Dole scheme was introduced

Bus zone parking crackdown POLICE will be working with bus drivers along the Warburton Highway to stop motorists parking in bus zones.

An investigation into a minor collision involving a bus in the main street of Warburton recently led to the crackdown.

“In speaking to Martyrs about that collision, we identified that there is an ongoing issue with motorists parking in the bus stops all along the highway,” Leading Senior Constable Don Trice told the Mail.

With 140 bus stops along the highway, Martyrs Operations manager, Bill Pine, said the illegal parking was more than an inconvenience for the company’s drivers.

“It’s a major drama and a risk, particularly for older and disabled passengers,” he said, identifying the cenotaph bus stop just down from the police station in Warburton, stops at the former CFA, the Millgrove CFA, the Alpine Retreat Hotel, the Warburton Post Office and Blackwood Avenue as some of the worst.

stops were out-dated, including those that were just gravel off the side of the road.

“It’s a case of ‘good luck’ if you are in a wheel-chair or otherwise need assistance to get down from the bus when you’re stepping down from quite a height,” he said.

Mr Pine said Martyrs Bus Service was working with Public Transport Victoria to try to make changes, but said it was a long process.

Leading Sen Const Trice said there were a few stops where there was the option of stepping off on to a raised

footpath and that these stops were popular with elderly passengers for that reason.

“The problem is at its worst over the weekend which suggests that tourists are the main offenders, but we will enforce the bus zone signs seven days a week,” he said.

As part of the operation, offending vehicles will be photographed by drivers to identify vehicles and police will issue parking tickets.

Leading Sen Const Trice said the fine for parking in a bus zone was $89.

Trauma trails riders

By KATH GANNAWAY A COUPLE riding on the Warburton Rail Trail on Saturday night were traumatised when a man pointed a gun at their heads and demanded money.

The couple, on holidays in Warburton, were riding their bikes on the trail around 10.30pm when they were stopped, just west of Scotchman’s Creek Road, by the man wielding a hand-gun.

“The man threatened the couple, demanding money while pointing the hand-gun at their heads,” Leading Senior Consta-

ble Don Trice,” said.

He said the man let them leave once he realised that they had no money, but added they were traumatised by the incident.

Leading Sen Const Trice said police were taking the incident very seriously and appealed for information.

The man was described as Caucasian, around 18 years of age, of slim build and with fair hair.

“Parents, families and schools have a very significant role to play in instilling in young people a work ethic,” she said.

Other issues raised were the need for a national approach and legislation in relation to matters including sexual abuse of children.

Ms Bishop acknowledged the need for a ‘seamless jurisdiction’ on issues such as domestic and sexual violence saying the Federal Government had a role to play.

She said sexual abuse of children was at the heart of a review into what worked and what didn’t under federation.

“I believe what comes from that review will form a very significant platform of promises at the next election,” she foreshadowed.

Mount Evelyn businesswoman Kristy McKenzie from Natural Chique spoke of the problems associated with taking on an apprentice, including three different awards.

Ms Bishop said the government had brought in their red-tape deregulation program removing about $2 billion from the backs of business, and were looking at other ways to help employers with apprenticeships.

In her earlier speech, she said the biggest challenge for the government was getting the budget under control.

That was recognised in a plea by retired business owner Howard Carter.

“I urge you to stay firm in trying to reduce the deficit,” he said.

“We look for your input and guidance,” Ms Bishop said in relation to the problem, and the solution, of growing the economy through participation and productivity.

“You are running businesses, you have children, you are connected to your communities.

“We want to hear your ideas on how we can take on these challenges.”

Crash leads to carpark chaos

By PETER DOUGLAS AN out-of-control vehicle struck six cars at Healesville Walk carpark last Thursday about 3.50pm.

In a peak time for the business district, with many shoppers and schoolchildren present, witnesses reported hearing a loud revving before seeing a car rush through the carpark.

According to Healesville Police, it is believed a male driver, 70, got his foot stuck on the accelerator pedal.

The driver was later transferred to Maroondah Hospital for observation, with police saying his licence will now be subject to review.

Police reported no injuries from the incident, but noted the incident could have ended tragically.

Jay Lamnek, from Healesville, was one witness whose car was struck.

“He was absolutely flying,” he said.

“He came out from behind the block and flew down, bumping cars along the way.

“I was worried someone was going to get hit.”

Another witness, who wished to remain anonymous, watched helplessly as their car was also hit.

“I first thought it may’ve been a case of road rage,” they said.

“There was a lady walking her pram and I thought she was going to get hit.

“I think it was lucky no-one was seriously hurt.”

Jesse, 22, has been selected as a finalist for the National Youth Awards (Youth in Media Award) for his article called ‘Teen’s prized story’.

The article appeared in the ‘Upper Yarra Mail’ on 7 October last year and featured a story on Badger Creek teenager, Michael Hardinge, who was one of 60 Victorians recognised for their work.

Mr Hardinge worked with FReeZA volunteers to organise and run live music events, before establishing his business, Momentum Studios.

Jesse started with the newspaper in 2013 and has proven to be a hardworking, talented reporter.

Keeping boys on track derailed

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM A YARRA Valley program supporting boys impacted by family violence will finish at the end of the month due to funding cuts.

The ‘Peaceful Warriors’ program is run by family support organisation Anglicare and is dedicated to working with boys aged nine to 12 who have been impacted by family violence.

The program, which has run in Healesville and Woori Yallock over the years, pairs the boys with men who volunteer as mentors in the program, acting as strong male role models and offering guidance and support during what can be tumultuous age.

Anglicare Victoria chief executive Mr Paul McDonald said the program mentored boys that had been identified as socially disadvantaged or at-risk.

“Many of the boys have been referred to Peaceful Warriors as a result of family violence, difficulty in managing emotions and forming relationships,” Mr McDonald said.

“They’ve needed positive male role models and the axing of this program will be devastating for them.”

For mentor Mick Crough, dealing with family violence is a case of prevention rather than cure.

He’s volunteered with the program for the past six years, and says the ‘Peaceful Warriors’ program helps steer young boys in the right direction during critical years.

“It gives many of the boys the chance to do things that they wouldn’t otherwise experience,” he said.

The programs run for 12 weeks and consist of sessions that connect the boys with their mentors through various activities, described by Mick as “good clean fun.”

The program was first funded by the community in 2001 before receiving government funding under John Howard in 2005. At the time it was cut, it was receiving $90,000 annually.

Up for media award He said the selection was a welcome surprise.

“You never expect to be selected in such a respected award, but it’s nice to be acknowledged,” he said.

“This particular story showed how pro-active and positive our youth can be.”

National Youth Week is the largest celebration of young people in Australia.

This acknowledgement is awarded to a media outlet, or journalist, whose recent story has positively portrayed youth in the news media.

The presentation dinner and ceremony will be held in Brisbane’s Ithaca Auditorium on 16 April, during National Youth Week.

NOMINATIONS for the upcoming Yarra Ranges by-election are due to close today.

As part of the election process, potential candidates keen to fill the Lyster Ward opening were prepped about the role last Thursday at the Monbulk Community Link.

About 20 residents gained valuable information from key representatives from the shire and the Victoria Electoral Commission.

Yarra Ranges mayor Maria McCarthy, Yarra Ranges chief executive officer Glenn Patterson and Evelyn Rak from the VEC all attended.

Cr McCarthy, who was elected in 2012, spoke about her journey in local government.

“This is the level of government that is most direct and that’s why I find it rewarding,” Cr McCarthy said.

“We’re here to provide handson support for the community.

“I first became a candidate to better represent our region and its people.”

Mr Patterson said the Lyster Ward offered challenges for the winning candidate.

“The Lyster Ward is one of

the most engaged and demanding wards,” Mr Patterson said.

“Whoever is elected will have a busy job ahead of them.

“But it’s also these challenges that make it one of the most rewarding.”

Mr Patterson explained being a councillor requires considerable commitment.

“It’s a seven-day role and one that requires being accessible to the community,” he said.

“You will often be approached during community events and become known to the public.”

Mr Patterson also outlined the sheer scope of Yarra Ranges, which is not only a major employer, but larger than many metropolitan councils.

Meanwhile, Ms Rak spoke of the importance of adhering to electoral regulations, also providing information on how to correctly nominate.

“The boys get a sense of what to aspire to, and in turn, their families begin to reflect upon their own behaviour, and the community is a winner by having good men,” he said.

It’s a view shared by Mick, who notes there is always a clear transformation in the way the boys handle themselves and situations.

“The biggest change is that they’ve got so much more confidence. They make positive changes in their lives,” Mick said.He believes supporting the program is in the best interests of the government too.

“It’s preventing boys from getting tied up in dangerous behaviour. It’s much cheaper to fund this program then treat the issues that may develop further down the track.”

When asked about the issue during a visit to the Yarra Valley, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the government took the issue of family violence very seriously.

“What we are seeking to do is ensure that services are available and we do put our services out for tender, on a competitive basis, from time to time,” Ms Bishop said.

“We want to make sure that services are delivered as cost-effectively but as appropriately as possible.”

She said the government was working to eradicate family violence in Australia.

“We’re not the only country where it occurs, but in a country like Australia it is just completely and utterly unacceptable.”

Mick Crough agrees, and views programs such as the Peaceful Warrior program as crucial in breaking the cycle of domestic violence.

“It’s helping these boys walk tall, trust people and feel more comfortable around men,” he said.

“With all the good this program is doing, I don’t know how anyone could justify cutting it.”

The Inspector-General for Emergency Management invites written submissions to the Review of Performance Targets for Bushire Fuel Management on Public Land in Victoria.

This review will support the future delivery of the most appropriate bushire fuel management program that reduces the risk of bushire to people, property and the environment, with the overarching priority being the protection of human life.

Individuals and organisations with expertise and knowledge of bushire fuel management on public land are encouraged to contribute through written submissions addressing the following areas: • the form of performance targets for bushire fuel management on public land. For example, the implementation of a hectare-based target or a bushire risk reduction target • any other complementary measures of performance for bushire fuel management programs on public land.

IGEM will consider submissions as part of its requirement to make recommendations to government regarding the form of future performance targets for bushire fuel management on public land. Speciically, the continuation of a hectare-based target or the adoption of a bushire risk-reduction target, such as that developed by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning as part of its risk-based approach to bushire management.

IGEM was established in Victoria on 1 July 2014 under Part 7 of the Emergency Management Act 2013. Its objectives are to: • provide assurance to the government and the community in respect of emergency management arrangements in Victoria • foster continuous improvement of emergency management in Victoria.

Written submissions will be accepted until 5pm on Friday 13 March 2015.

It will be remembered that when the lease was advertised it caused dismay among those who had visions of a sanctuary on broad, national lines. The matter was vigorously taken up and urgent telegrams were despatched to the department concerned.

The Chief Secretary now states that he has had a clause inserted in the lease whereby the area may be regained upon giving six months’ notice to the lessee. It now behoves the council as a committee of management to take immediate steps to enlist influential people of all societies interested to come to the rescue and obtain this wonderful asset for Healesville and all the lovers of nature.

Shire elections MR Percy Johnston JP who is a candidate in the Healesville Shire election will visit Marysville and Buxton next Tuesday and speak in the Badger Creek Hall on Wednesday night.

The other candidate, Mr W. Maggs will address the ratepayers in the Memorial Hall on Tuesday night. Mr Maggs intends to formulate a definite program if elected, to improve every road, street, footpath and water channel in the shire.

HEALESVILLE GUARDIAN 2 MARCH 1935 Shire of Healesville THERE will be an extraordinary election of one councillor to fill the extraordinary vacancy caused by the death of Councillor Edward Frederick Goodall Hodges. The election will be held on Thursday, March 21.

Obituary IT is with great regret that we have to record the sudden death of Mrs Robert Scott on February 21 at her home ‘Tyrone’ Buxton.

Mrs Scott was the daughter of the late Henry and Sarah Petty who were among the early settlers in the Buxton- Marysville district, and was born on the Woods Point Road.

Later the family took up land at Buxton, where the deceased married Mr Robert Scott, son of another pioneer family - the late William and Ann

Scott of Buxton. In 1914 they started the guesthouse which has since become the popular and widely known ‘Tyrone’.

The late Mrs Scott was known throughout the district for kindliness and generosity, her unbounded hospitality and her practical sympathy with all in trouble.

The numerous messages of sympathy to her family reflect the great esteem in which she was held, not only in her own district but throughout the state.

After a short service at the home, the funeral proceeded to the Marysville cemetery for the burial service.

Sparkling entertainment MRS W.E. Sharp scored another success on Thursday night by means of the second very enjoyable entertainment organised by her to aid the Healesville Advancement Association. The show was undoubtedly the best so far, and the community singing and variety program was capably presided over by Mr W.E. Gallagher.

The song slides were screened by Mac and it was noticed that improvements had been made to the slides by the aid of startling resplendent colours applied marginally. The Valmas presented singing, dancing and acrobatic acts of persuasive artistry. Miss Bessie was able to make the large audience believe that she had no bones in her body and Mr Rex put over some clever footwork.

Miss Shirley Dwyer used her melodious soprano voice to admiration in fairly classical songs and was not at all abashed when presented with a pair of garters by an admirer.

For not complying with water restrictions, several people living in Yarra Junction and Wesburn have had their water cut off by the Yarra Junction Waterworks Trust.

HEALESVILLE GUARDIAN 16 MARCH 1935 Black magic at Badger ON Wednesday 27 March, the Healesville ‘Curtain Raisers’ will give a live-wire entertainment in the Badger Creek Hall in aid of the Badger Creek Progress Association.

Included in the many items to be submitted will be ‘The Big Broadcast’ by 3OK, the Crusher Broadcasting Service which will embrace relays from the Four Mills Brothers, the Fitzroy Police Station and a grand Wurlitzer organ recital direct from the Town Hall.

3OK will also broadcast the children’s hour, the skeleton dance and snappy numbers by the ballet, songsters and choruses.

Another item specially engaged for this production regardless of enormous expense was ‘black ant’ by One Lung Sung direct from little Bourke Street.

In case you didn’t know A BUMPER house should be recorded as on Tuesday night 19 March two cloakrooms in the Memorial Hall will be occupied by the Healesville Tourist Association and the Healesville Advancement Association respectively, two bodies with the one object in view - to advance the interests of the district.

Off-field allies lock horns

By KATHRYN BERMINGHAM THEY’RE allies in improving Aboriginal health, but Eastern Health staff and some of the best Aboriginal sporting talent will become fierce opponents next month. Residents in Melbourne’s East are being invited to attend a football match and netball tournament to be held between the two groups on Eastern Health’s annual ‘Closing the Gap’ sports day.

Now in its third year, the annual sports day celebrates Aboriginal culture while promoting Aboriginal health within the community.

Eastern Health’s Senior Aboriginal Service Develop-

ment officer, Vera Webber, said the event was an opportunity for the community as a whole to “connect with respect” with the Aboriginal community.

“The aim of the day is to celebrate the spirit of reconciliation, and also better inform the community about the dedicated Aboriginal health services we have,” Ms Webber said.

“Aboriginal health continues to be one of Eastern Health’s major priorities.”

In previous years, Ms Webber said, the sports day had achieved its goal of uniting the community while showcasing

some of the best Aboriginal sporting talent in the region.

“It’s been a terrific way of breaking down cultural barriers and encouraging collaboration between Eastern Health and local Aboriginal communities.”

As well as a netball tournament, the day will feature children’s activities, postmatch entertainment from Philly and Scott Darlow as well as a traditional ’Welcome to Country’. The Eastern Health Closing the Gap Sports Day will be held on Sunday 1 March at the Don Road Sporting Complex in Healesville from noon.

Films for a song

By KATH GANNAWAY TEN into 60 goes quite economically for anyone who enjoys international and Australian movies on the big screen.

The first of the Yarra Ranges Film Society’s 2015, 11-movie program screened in February, but with the annual subscription of $60, ($55 concession and $30 under 25) for the remaining 10 films, it’s great value.

This year’s program, selected by society members, has some outstanding comedy and drama films from around the world.

Ashes and Diamonds, a Polish drama made in 1958 and set during the German occupation of Poland during WWII, is next up on 10 March in Warburton, and 17 March in Healesville.

By KATH GANNAWAY INFLUENTIAL Australian songwriter, Shane Howard, will take centre stage at Montrose Town Centre for the launch of Yarra Ranges Council’s program of arts and cultural events for 2015.

Culture Tracks covers performances, music, exhibitions, workshops and movies at the council’s

cultural centres at Montrose, Healesville, Lilydale, Warburton, Upwey, and Mooroolbark.

The program includes performance pieces such as Kelly, More Female Parts, Gallipoli and First Things First, musicians including C. W. Stoneking, The Grigoryan Brothers and James Morrison, and exhibitions that showcase a rich vein of local talent, along with

regional and national exhibitions.

Shane Howard’s credentials as the artist behind Goanna and the anthemic song ‘Solid Rock’, have established a legion of fans, but the launch will see fresh songs by Howard inspired by the Great Southern Ocean from his new album Deeper South.

a night of soulful stories from the wilds of South West Victoria, delivered by an artist who has spent 30 years capturing a unique side of the Australian spirit.

WORKSHOPS for a unique arts project continue this Saturday with a community workshop at ECOSS in Wesburn.

Artist Rachael Hallinan is behind the Ersatz Fantasia Project, creating something beautiful out of discarded and broken toys.

Workshops have been held at Belgrave, Montrose and CERES in the city, and the final two will be from 10.30am to 3.30pm at ECOSS on Saturday 14 March, and again on Sunday, 15 March.

Rachael is inviting residents to take part in the playful and colourful art experience of creating a faux forest made entirely of discarded and broken boys.

The project is definitely designed to be fun, but it also aims to be thoughtprovoking for consumers of all ages.

“It is a reminder to consider materials when purchasing gifts and toys, to recycle and repurpose and to consider using environmentally friendly alternatives to buying, such as borrowing from toy libraries,” Rachael said.

THE Interview, a comedy about two media personalities (James Franco and Seth Rogen) who are recruited by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has had quite a bumpy history.

After a swarm of controversy, including the Sony hacks, terrorism scares, threats of war, Sony cancelling the film’s release and then hastily backtracking, The Interview finally comes out and it’s actually kind of great.

The film has the crude humour you expect from Franco

and Rogen’s work, but kept to a minimum.

Instead, we get a lot of amusement from their oddcouple friendship, and in the middle act The Interview essentially becomes a surreal buddy picture between Dave (Franco) and Kim (Randall Park).

Some people criticised The Interview for humanising Kim Jong Un - he’s a crazy despot who’s also a Katy Perry fan with an inferiority complex but I support this approach.

Park is mercurial and com-

pelling as Kim, and it’s empowering to be able to laugh at evil.

The Interview is funny, well-produced, fairly tense and surprisingly on-point in its satire of both the North Korean regime and American media. The film’s underlying message is that words and public image are the best way to take down a tyrant.

It’s not the new Great Dictator or Dr Strangelove, but The Interview is still unexpectedly solid.

By KATH GANNAWAY MORE than 700 runners and walkers, and hundreds more supporters, piled into Warburton over the weekend for Community Bank Warburton Up and Running.

The cool start was short-lived with the heat starting to build by the time the 10k run and Half Marathon got underway, but event spokesperson Sue Hoffman said loads of people took advantage of the Yarra River to cool off after their events.

If there was an ‘upset’ it was in the 5k walk where four-time winner, George Flrnalski, despite his best efforts, lost his crown to Nick Gabbilas, and Jim Berrington in second place.

Three generations of the Upper Yarra’s Steer family competed again with 81-year-old Colin the oldest competitor on the day.

Among some of the bigger groups were the Healesville Run Guns and the Seaford Little Athletics Club who made the Warburton Caravan Park their home-base - along with many other competitors.

“It was our 12th year and the event has established a reputation as a really friendly event which draws people from all over,” Ms Hoffman said.

“It’s great for Warburton which was full of Up and Running people, and the river was full of Up and Running people in the afternoon.”

Loss ends Premier run - for some

LIFE is a journey, a game, a dance, a dream ... and Premier League was all of those things and more for the Yarra Glen Bowls Club.

The club has 76 members, none of them flown in from interstate or overseas and, apart from the coach, not paid to play. They play because they love the club and the club supports them in return.

This is what makes YGBC so special. The club gave third-placed Essendon a huge fight, leading for most of the match and finally being overrun in the final stages of the game.

The team gave it everything they had, unfortunately this wasn’t good enough, so back to Division 1 they go with heads held high, hopefully to give Premier Division another crack in 2017.

Now the club has its sights firmly set on Saturday’s Division 4 and 7 teams and the Tuesday Division 1 and 4 teams. Not bad to get four out of six teams in to the finals.

Division 4 plays Boronia at Boronia and it’s one apiece between the teams, however Boronia does have the home-ground advantage.

Division 7 has lost only four games this season and will play Donvale at home. Again both teams have won their home games so you would assume Yarra Glen has the upper hand in this battle.

In Tuesday’s final series, Division 1 takes on Heathmont at Heathmont, similar conditions to ours. Both teams have won one each so this will be a tight finish.

Division 4 has only lost one game for the season and finishing on top, look hard to beat and will play Whittlesea at Yarra Glen.

YVDCA THE heat hit hard on Saturday with cricketers around the Yarra Valley finding the going tough.

In the DJ Strachan Shield, frontrunner Warburton-Millgrove enjoyed the chance to put its feet up, while the rest fought it out in the oppressive conditions, with finals positions up for grabs.

Possibly the most anticipated game is being played at Seville, where the Blues host Mount Evelyn in a clash that could decide second place, a home final and a finals position.

This proved to be the case, as both sides battled through nearly 75 overs of good old-fashioned cricket.

Mount Evelyn made an ideal start, removing the openers early, only to see Seville bounce back in the form of an impressive partnership between Tim Dwyer (94) and Ryan Akers (41).With years of experience between them, the pair set themselves for an extended stint at the wicket. With Seville sitting at 2/107 at tea, the platform was set for an onslaught against a tiring attack.

And that they did, with a brutal half-hour period post tea, putting the pressure back on the bowlers, and setting the Blues for a total beyond 300.

Mount Evelyn bounced back through a containing spell from veteran Chris Anderson (5/31), whose flurry of wickets had the Rovers on the verge of giving the bowlers an early finish.While Seville captain Dean Troyhan (28) was still at the wicket, the Seville score continued to grow.

Despite his wicket falling, the Blues tail pushed the score to an imposing 246.

Seville would be well pleased with their efforts, and will be confident of reigniting their faltering season in time for an assault on another premiership.

Mount Evelyn will need to fight hard to chase this target.

Woori Yallock has left the door open for some challengers.

HEALESVILLE Tennis Club is making it easy for anyone who ever thought they might like to have a hit.

The club runs a full program of social and competition tennis, for all ages and abilities on most days of the week.

Tuesdays are packed with mid-week ladies competition from 10am, regular players and emergencies wanted, social tennis for all ages at the Don Road Complex and the Tuesday night inhouse competition at Queen’s Park.

A ladies’ social morning is held on Wednesdays from 9.30am to 11am at Queen’s Park, and a Thursday mid-week ladies competition is held weekly starting at 9.30am. Emergencies are wanted for this competition.

Junior and senior competitions are held on Saturdays and new players are also wanted for this competition.

For youngsters who want to try out the club is running a six-week, free Hot Shots junior beginner program on Thursdays, 3.30pm to 4.45pm in March and April.

Monday 23 March has been set aside for the annual ladies’ doubles round-robin fun day from 9.30am to 2pm. The club also offers court hire for casual tennis players, and coaching.

Although many of their batsmen got starts, the Tigers struggled to take control of the contest, losing regular wickets Chance Burridge (3/20) picked up crucial wickets for the Bloods, and with the support young gun Dermott Fry (3/22), the pairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regular strikes kept things in check.

It was left to Tigers stalwart Michael King (68) to ensure the Tigers had reached a challenging total.

With the support of the aggressive Greg Selby (27), King led the Tigers to 187.

Woori Yallock will still be comfortable with the result, as their bowling line-up contains enough fire power. With the Hoddles Creek ground unavailable due to renovations, the Wombats hosted Yarra Junction in the unfamiliar surrounds of Warburton.

Hoddles Creek batted first, and their experienced top-order werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to capitalise on the friendly conditions.

Many of the Wombats made solid starts, but they would be ruing their inability to â&#x20AC;&#x2122;kick onâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

The experience of Doc Chesney (37no) added some beef to the score.

The Wombats would be pleased with the final total of 189.

Cam Spaulding (4/70) is proving to be a valuable option, and his spinners not only netted four wickets, but gave captain Quinton Hodgkinson the chance to keep his pacers fresh.

Yarra Junction certainly has the fire power at the top of their batting order to chase down the total, and would be confident they can stake a claim for finals action.
