GENEROUS blood donors living on the Southern Downs will now have to travel to Toowoomba to donate their life-saving reserves after the Red Cross Blood Service announced it would cease mobile visits to Warwick and Stanthorpe.

The surprise move was sparked following a trial of extended opening hours at the Toowoomba Donor

Centre, which saw an 11 per cent spike in plasma collections since the trial period began in September last year.

State donor services manager Melanie Thompson said the Blood Service was so impressed by the results of the temporary measure that it would now make the extended hours permanent.

to Time’s up for wild dogs Fireys get their BAITING programs will commence sooner than expected in an effort to drive down wild dog numbers in the region, Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) has advised.

Pest management officer James Eastwell said council was aware feral dog numbers had jumped in certain areas of the Southern Downs and it wanted to stop the rise.

“At the last Wild Dog Advisory Group meeting, it was decided to run a baiting round sooner rather than later as there were a lot of reports of young dogs being seen and stock being bitten and killed,” Mr Eastwell said.

“We believe previous baiting campaigns have been successful as less adult dogs are being seen.

“We now need to take swift action to reduce the amount of young dogs reaching maturity and breeding.

“Our usual schedule of days and times has changed, so we urge landowners to please read our flyers carefully.”

The first 2015 baiting program will be held on 24 February in the southern part of the region and from 25 to 27 February in the

northern part of the SDRC area.

The program involves council local laws officers baiting meat for local landowners at baiting stations located around the region.

While council efforts are making inroads, this will only improve if more landholders become involved in the program, Mr Eastwell stressed.

“Landowners must involve themselves in the shooting, trapping and baiting of wild dogs as a combined effort on control measures,” he said.

“Bounties of $100 for adult wild dogs and $50 for pups continue to be offered as reward.

“By combining the baiting program with hunting, trapping and shooting, this will cover a larger geographical area than that of baiting alone and will increase the long-term benefits of the program.

“Wild dogs are not only damaging and costly to our community but they are potentially dangerous to the health of people, pets and livestock.”

Since increasing appointments during the week and opening every Saturday, the number of plasma donors at Toowoomba Donor Centre has increased from 930 to 1037.

FIREFIGHTING capabilities in the Mount Marshall and Goomburra Valley regions have been beefed up with the installation of four water fill points along the new Warwick to Allora pipeline.

Southern Downs Regional Council disaster management co-ordinator Mark Saunders said the fill points ensured better access to water in these areas, which could be difficult to find during dry times.

“Queensland Fire and Emergency Service can use the filling points to fight grass fires but due to the capacity of the water main on the Warwick to Allora pipeline, the fill points will only provide limited assistance when combating structural fires,” he said.

“However, this is still an improvement over the present system of trucking water from Allora.

“The fill points are more cost effective and cheaper than having council water trucks working after hours or being redeployed from council construction/maintenance works which in turn can delay those construction crews.”

The fill points will be secured by QFES registered locks, Mr Saunders said.

He said he hoped no one would interfere with the important infrastructure and urged those who saw vehicles near the fill points, other than those owned by QFES or the council, to contact police.

QFES Inspector Hemmo de Vries praised the council’s efforts and agreed that the access to the water main between Allora and Warwick would be invaluable.

SOS call goes out

By ALENA HIGGINS COMMUNITY-MINDED residents living outside of Stanthorpe are being encouraged to start their own ratepayers’ and residents’ associations to advocate for important issues at local and State Government level.

At its monthly meeting in Stanthorpe last week, members of SOS the Voice of Ratepayers and Residents reinforced its September 2014 decision to support the formation of sub-groups in other Southern Downs communities under the umbrella of Save Our Shire Action Group (SOSAG).

Chairman Bob Johnson said he welcomed a number of new members to the meeting last Thursday night who expressed concern about the way the area was being represented.

He said a new worry was the “cava-

lier attitude” of Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) in deciding to sell off seniors housing across the Southern Downs without prior consultation with tenants.

“It is a shabby way to treat our senior citizens,” Mr Johnson said.

“It was even done in camera so that the public and the press could not be privy to the proceedings and the reasons for the decision.

“It shows just how distant these decisions have become from those they really affect.”

Aub Hanigan is keen to start a subgroup in Warwick and called for interested parties, including younger ratepayers and residents, to come forward.

“There are a lot of concerns in the community amongst ratepayers at the moment, most of it relates to the high cost of rates and, since amalgamation,

the lack of transparency and accountability in the council,” Mr Hanigan said.

“Many ratepayers feel alienated from the council at the moment and council is really the hub of the community.

“You can leave a call for a councillor and they won’t ring back or you can drop in correspondence and it is not even acknowledged.

“I don’t know if this has to do with workload, but it isn’t good enough.”

Mr Hanigan contends Warwick has started to go backwards and something needs to be done to stem the decline.

He said he wanted to advocate for lower rates and reinstating the full early payment discount, which was dropped from 10 per cent to 7.5 per cent this financial year.

“I drive to the ratepayers' meeting at

Stanthorpe every month and they really do some good and have got their community onside,” Mr Hanigan said.

“Hopefully we can do the same here and work with council to get a better outcome.”

Mayor Peter Blundell publically welcomed the transition last year of SOSAG into a residents’ and ratepayers’ association, telling the Free Times in August: “If there are people who want to take as much interest in the community as that, to actually get that up and running, that is a great thing.”

The council’s December executive report shows it received 2543 customer inquiries, resolved 2163 of them and referred 381 on.

Health concerns THE Mental Illness Fellowship Queensland is holding three information sessions in Warwick and Stanthorpe for people living with mental health concerns and their carers.

The workshops will discuss the NDIS and what the scheme will mean for people with mental health issues.

TENTERFIELD Shire Council will receive more than $2 million in State and Federal Government grants to fix key infrastructure, it was announced this week.

Council coffers will be bolstered with $1.5 million to upgrade Mount Lindesay Road between Legume and Woodenbong and $160,000 to upgrade Tooloom Bridge.

The council matched $160,000 towards the bridge project which will remove the existing 15 tonne load limit and the need for heavy vehicles to take a 16 kilometre detour.

Meanwhile, the council will also receive $350,000 from the Australian Government’s new $300 million Bridges Renewal Program to upgrade Bookookoorara Creek Bridge on Mount Lindesay Road.

This is in addition to the $1,047,618 it received on Monday under the third quarterly payment of the Commonwealth’s Financial Assistance Grant program.

GOONDIWINDI’S redeveloped cinema is expected to commence showcasing movies on 9 April.

The facility is tipped to open seven days a week during school holidays and Wednesday to Sunday at other times.

A second screen will be available in October when the second stage of the complex is completed.

The cinema is being restored to its former glory with provisions for live performances.

The Stanthorpe local’s rainbow run for a cure drew about 250 runners, which pitted participants against colour “throwers“ along a 2.5 kilometre or five kilometre stretch of Quart Pot Creek.

“It was a fantastic day," she said.

“Everyone I spoke to said they absolutely loved it and we raised about $6300 for type one diabetes research.”

Ms Jordan, who co-ordinated the event in a bid to help her two-yearold nephew CJ who suffers from the disease, said she would look to make the run an annual fixture.

She said her sister, CJ’s mum, was over the moon and praised the community’s generosity.

Springborg steps up SOUTHERN Downs MP and Queensland Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg will square off against Annastacia Palaszczuk over the next three years after Labor formed minority government last week.

It is not the first time the longstanding LNP stalwart has been tasked with keeping Labor in line, but he is no doubt hoping his fourth term as Opposition Leader is the charm.

Making Mr Springborg's job easier is the precarious nature of the government, formed on a knife edge with Independent Nicklin MP Peter Wellington tipping Labor over the line after two weeks of counting.

needed with the help of Mr Wellington following the 31 January election and was sworn in as Premier on Saturday.

Southern Downs Regional Council community services manager Sheila Stebbings said the council was delighted to host the seminars and was keen to support environmentally sustainable practices, lifelong learning and a healthy, active Southern Downs.

“We will hold two events - Integration of House and Garden for Sustainable Living Workshops, one at Warwick Town Hall on 13 March from 5.30pm to 8.30pm and then another workshop at Stanthorpe Civic Centre on 14 March from 10am to 1pm,” Ms Stebbings said.

“Jerry Coleby-Williams, who many will know and watch regularly on the ABC’s Gardening Australia, will discuss a number of topics including the 21st century cottage garden and creating and maintaining a sustainable house and garden.

“Jerry’s expertise and enthusiasm for these topics is infectious and we hope many people are inspired by his innovative strategies.”

SOME established trees will have to be removed to make way for stage two of council’s stormwater trunk drainage system at Glengallan Road, Warwick.

Manager works construction Eric Kraak said the proposed work would begin on 23 February and would extend the stormwater trunk system to accept stormwater from the existing system in Rodeo Drive and Peregrine Court.

“The extension of this system will help to alleviate excess stormwater flows on the roadway in Glengallan Road between Rodeo Drive and the Horsman Road intersection," he said.

“To achieve this, Council Works Construction crews will install 190 metres of large stormwater pipe and associated access chambers in the footpath on the eastern side of Glengallan Road and connect to the existing downstream stormwater trunk main. The estimated cost of this work is $240,000.

“Regrettably, to install the pipeline it is necessary to remove some established trees from the footpath."

Mr Kraak said council considered other alignments in a bid to avoid removing the trees, however due to other constraints it was not possible.

“Council will replace the removed trees with other native trees suitable for footpaths as part of the project," he said.

“Council will endeavour to minimise any disruption to residents and traffic while this work is underway over the next couple of months."

Works should be completed by the end of April, weather permitting.

By ALENA HIGGINS A STANTHORPE woman who “lost everything” and re-emerged from rock bottom has spoken out about the community support program that helped her get back on her feet, with the future of the program in the balance due to funding cuts.

Gayle Bell shudders to think where she would be if it were not for the assistance of Community Development Services (CDS) and her friends in Stanthorpe following a breakdown in November last year.

“I basically lost everything,” she said.

“I lost my job, my accommodation, my kids, my mental health and my physical health. I was quite unwell.”

But there to help pick up the pieces and offer a compassionate hand was CDS’s family support workers Lee Stroud and John Mahoney.

“I am there nearly every day,” the mother-of-three said of the organisation.

“I visit the financial planner, go for the social worker, they helped place me on the government housing list, my kids go there to use the youth services and when I was quite literally living on the creek bed, John was able to help me get temporary accommodation.”

However, the fate of the successful program was thrown into jeopardy on Christmas Eve last year after CDS was told by the Department of Social Services that its funding application for its family and parenting program had been rejected.

Mr Mahoney said while CDS would carry on its services without the $70,000 annual funding, they would be forced to close the long-standing Family Support program in June and two and a half job losses would result.

“Rather than fund a small not-forprofit like us, the department is giving our funding to big organisations based in cities to kind of do fly-in fly-out things,” he said.

Family support workers John Mahoney and Lee Stroud are worried about the future of their crucial program if Commonwealth funding fails to be reinstated.

“Our family support service has built up a fantastic network in the local community and Warwick, and we regularly meet with other service providers to make sure we work in partnerships.

“We have built a resource of great local knowledge that non-local large organistaions don’t have, and these organisations usually ask for our support

to connect with families.

“We provide the government with a wholistic service that is great value for money. Imagine the costs of sending workers from Toowoomba to visit families.”

Mr Mahoney said he had spoken with the office of Maranoa MP Bruce Scott who reassured him that Mr Scott would advocate for the funding to be reinstated.

“I’m confident he is going to fight hard, but I am not confident he is going to be successful,” Mr Mahoney said.

For Ms Bell, speaking out in support of the organisation that helped save her life is the least she can do.

“I can’t speak highly enough of them,” she said.

“Part of my healing is to get people to realise that this service is so invaluable - it just can’t be replicated.”

Railway on track to fill the gap of Artworks

By ALENA HIGGINS LESS than five months since the closure of Artworks on Davadi, another community hub is being established in Stanthorpe to fill the void.

Artworks on Railway is expected to open in the coming weeks thanks to a dedicated “little team” of community minded individuals.

Heading up the team is Laurie Astill, president of the local art group, who said he was disappointed to see Artworks on Davadi fold in October.

“The original Artworks on Davadi was a fabulous meeting spot for many different organisations,” he said.

“We used it, Endeavour used it, Uni-

versity of the Third Age (U3A) used it and, of course, Aldi took over the site four months ago.”

Mr Astill said while the Alley Arcade venue was not as big, he hoped to recreate a similar creative and community heart and offer comparable classes and activities to its predecessor.

“We will start again in a very small way, a very humble way similar to what Artworks on Davadi did,” Mr Astill said.

“We are about to do the licencing to get a small cafe running.”

Mr Astill said he and his wife Anna knew first-hand how important it was for people to have somewhere to go where they were treated with dignity re-

gardless of their differences.

He said they wanted to provide that culture at the new store.

“We were quite upset to see the doors close,” he said.

“The clientele was upset and the lovely people from Endeavour and their carers had nowhere to go. A part of their life, a very special part, was taken away from them.

“That hurt Anna and I as we had a disabled son, Adam, who has passed away now, but he had muscular dystrophy and autism and it wasn’t easy to go out into the public eye and get frowned at.

“We were very passionate and trying to find another meeting place for the

people who had been displaced.”

Mr Astill said he hoped the groups that used Artworks on Davadi would return.

He said yearly membership was just $10.

Over the years Artworks on Davadi has held numerous exhibitions, film nights, art and creative workshops.

It became the home of the Thursday art group, Stanthorpe Amnesty, ukulele players, yoga classes, U3A classes and meetings, PHaMs meditation group and workshops, and seniors gatherings.

SOUTHERN Downs residents may notice aircraft flying strangely around Warwick and Stanthorpe aerodromes next week as special flight safety checks are carried out between 22 February and 1 March.

The checks are being conducted at 10 aerodromes across Queensland for the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) to make sure flight paths at the aerodromes continue to be safe.

Low level flights using a twin-engine Cessna Conquest aircraft will be undertaken at each aerodrome to check flight paths within an area of up to 35 kilometres from the aerodromes.

The checks will ensure navigation aids are operational and not suffering interference, as well as looking for any new obstacles that could be a danger to aviation safety.

Low-level flying is an essential part of the safety exercise, with the aircraft down as low as several hundred feet at times, a CASA spokesperson said.

CASA requires aerodrome flight path safety checks to be carried out every three years to maintain a high level of air safety at all aerodromes.

CASA has contracted the operation of the special check flights out to Corporate Air, one of Australia’s largest and longest established aviation services providers.

I ASK Lawrence Springborg, that while he has drawn up an impressive achievement sheet ‘Stronger Team, Stronger Plan, Stronger Qld, I ask, are these his achievements or in fact the achievement of the public or business applying for these monetary grants e.g. $30,000 for Australian Camp Oven Festival, $25,000 for Warwick Gold Cup Campdraft and Rodeo.

With social justice at the fore, you voted against the council motion to “divest itself of community housing”. Your colleagues can hold their heads in shame.

Did they search the archives for the prevailing sentiment when the decision was made to invest a portion of council income in community housing? Short-term security of tenure for the current tenants is scant consolation.

Council, advised by highly paid executive/s, declare that community housing is not its “core business”. Yet, in the next breath they tell us that a storage dam providing irrigation water to some of the largest landholders in the shire is “core business”.

And these matters are discussed in closed meetings from which the public gallery is excluded. You have no mandate, councillors. Your duty is to consult with, and act in the interest of your constituents.

Pride before fall “PRIDE goeth before a fall” seems to call it for the LNP after the Queensland election. What a great New Year gift to political minds it will be, as the new government appoints a Speaker and hangs by a thread on 43 votes, plus a fussy independent.

Of course the Speaker can give the government a hand to get on with passing legislation that will now be noticed by an opposition with mischief on their minds.

Folks from far away have decided that the enormous debts run up by the previous ALP governments are now delightfully theirs to pay!

However the LNP Government was warned that the mining invasion would have consequences, for when coal dust and acid rain is on the daily menu for farmers, and small towns are mined out of existence, with local native animals and birds sacrificed for the mighty dollar, the baseball bats were waiting.

The most amazing aspect of the political rout was the arrogance of the LNP with such a majority in the House, felt no fear! This writer wishes calm seas and plain sailing for Mr Lawrence Springborg, as he represents his constituents here and throughout the state.

The rot set in and the “political genius” Lawrence Springborg spearheaded the union with the Liberals. Its city voters, BIG miners and BIG multi-business that now rules! Lawrence can ‘crow’; but Australia is drowning in debt, created out of nothing.

have no voice in government! If Clive is sincere, he will take his name out of PUP and help John Bjelke-Petersen restore the Country Party.

That party would gain the balance of power and give country people a real choice. A policy that includes a low or no interest development bank would be necessary - who is prepared to challenge the foreign investors, businesses and BIG bankers?

The dance is over ... the will of the people voted overwhelmingly in Campbell Newman’s own electorate, a massive rejection of the man, his party, and all that he stood for - the autocratic power he held ruthlessly and unconscionably, when he sacked approximately 20,000 public servants onto the scrapheap, wrecking lives.

This state needs to get back onto its feet, and the wheels of industry and the economy to kick back into gear; this attempt by you for another by-election is futile, and a waste of taxpayers’ money and tiresome delay. The voice of the people spoke on election day ...

NB. Cellulose fibre is, when googled, ‘rat fodder’, a poverty war mentality option that would incur death to asthma and emphysema sufferers and all human beings when breathed in particles are escaping through tongue and groove ceilings, ‘like mine’.

This is happening all over the Southern Downs because ‘no-one’ e.g. an environmental minister ‘Peter Garrett’ revised the insulation options and who should have taken “cellulose fibre” out of the option list.

It would have taken 15 minutes to research that fact. What was he thinking - oh, that he was not thinking at all and did not have any qualifications to both be an environmental minister nor a politician!

THE Leyburn community is rallying around two vulnerable pensioners who could be displaced if the Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) decides to sell their homes. Pauline Robson’s ex-husband, Michael, lives in community housing co-owned by the council and the Department of Housing and Public Works. She said her expartner, known affectionately as Pop, was struggling physically under the strain of uncertainly.

“Pop is 65, he has scoliosis and has worked since he was 14 and paid his taxes,” she said.

“It took us years to get him this home - this is where he wants to spend his last days, close to his family and close to his grandkids.

“We are not backing down, they cannot walk over little people we are going to rally and fight back in a big way.”

Scott White lives across the road from Mr Robson and Mr Robson’s neighbour, Michael Rennick, whose home is also under threat.

He said he was extremely upset that his friends, who have lived at the Macintyre Street address for five and 10 years respectively, could be uprooted through no fault of their own.

“It brings tears to my eyes,” Mr White said.

“They are brilliant neighbours.

“They can’t move back in with their parents and they can’t afford the rent in town.

“If Wobbles (Mr Rennick) goes then Leyburn will lose its Postie and he has been in the town for 30 years.”

Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) decided in October last year to divest itself of community housing, starting with the initial sell-off of 24 units at 54-56 Fitzroy Street, Warwick.

SDRC owns 44 community hous-

ing units. This includes 10 wholly owned by council at 56 Fitzroy Street and 34 in partnership with the department.

SDRC director business and community services David Tuxford said council would, over a period of time, no longer operate housing under the State Government’s community housing framework.

“This is likely to involve selling some units to pay out the department’s equity on property which will be retained by council,” Mr Tuxford said.

But he stressed the council’s absolute resolve in helping tenants with the transition, including supporting them to find other accommodation and securing 12-month tenancy agreements at the current rent if the property is sold.

A department spokesperson confirmed they were aware of the council’s plans and were also “working to

minimise any potential impact of this decision on council’s tenants”.

“Given the department has a number of agreements with council, this is a complex situation that will take some time to resolve. This process is underway and the department is continuing discussion with SDRC,” the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said it was not “unusual” for councils to manage community housing.

“Twenty-five per cent of social housing is currently managed by the community housing sector, including local governments,” they said.

Mr Tuxford said council officers would be meeting with tenants of the Sugarloaf Road duplex, Stanthorpe, next week and any affected tenants wanting a one-on-one meeting with community services staff could be arranged.

Pooling cash gives a lift

By ALENA HIGGINS COMMUNITY members are being asked to make waves to raise much-needed funds for a pool hoist at WIRAC. The recreation and aquatic centre will be one of 80 YMCA pools across Australia to take part in a Swimathon on Sunday 1 March in a bid to drum up support for people with a disability. Residents can make a splash by swimming laps or getting jiggy doing a 90-minute aqua aerobics session.

If water is not your thing, participants can test their strength and endurance with the

bootcamp and gym challenge or shake it off with 90 minutes of dance mania.

Centre manager Frederic Meyer urged people to enrol online, set their target and get friends and family to sponsor them.

“We welcome every member of our community to have a go and to assist with our goal of raising enough funds to purchase a pool hoist,” he said.

“WIRAC is currently missing this critical equipment, meaning that for too many people with disability, the simple pleasure of swimming a few laps in our 25m pool is difficult

if not impossible.

“We’d like to change that, however, a pool hoist does not come cheap.

Mr Meyer said a commercial model would cost between $7000 and $10,000 to purchase.

“By swimming a few laps or by taking part in other events organised on the day, anyone can make an impact and help out people in need in our area,” he said.

ratepayers TENTERFIELD Shire Council will conduct a survey of residents to determine their level of satisfaction with council operations and service levels.

General manager Lotta Jackson said the random telephone survey will be used to collect local information to help assess if the strategies, actions and indicators in the Community Strategic Plan are on track.

Ms Jackson said that the survey aimed to provide the council with an understanding of what residents thought of council services and their future needs.

“Surveys are a good way in which council can quickly get feedback from its residents (both urban and rural) about a number of matters," she said.

“The broad aim of this survey is to evaluate resident perceptions of council’s performance in relation to a range of key services and facilities.

“Council’s 10-year Community Strategic Plan has now progressed over two years and it is important that the responses from the survey be compared with the results in the Community Strategic Plan to ascertain if we are on track or not.

“Good or bad, the responses will provide a wealth of information and feedback to council."

Residents have a choice to be part of the survey anonymously or provide their details if they want further contact.

The survey will be managed by Micromex Research, which was chosen because of its competitive fee, reputation and experience in working with more than 40 councils across NSW, Ms Jackson said.

A MALE cleaner has suffered severe facial injuries after being bashed by four teenagers last week.

The cleaner was working on the grounds of Stanthorpe State Primary School when he was attacked by two male and two female teenagers about 3.45am last Friday.

Police have examined CCTV footage and say they are confident they will be able to identify and arrest the offenders. Anyone with information is urged to call police.

Four face drug charges THE interception of a number of vehicles during the week has resulted in four persons being charged with a variety of drug charges.

A 53-year-old male received a drug diversion after a small amount of cannabis and implements were located in the vehicle he was driving at Severnlea about midday on 14 February.

A short time later police located cannabis in a vehicle stopped on Wallangarra Road, which resulted in the 29-year-old male tourist being charged with possession of a dangerous drug.

IT’S been a busy few weeks for Scots PGC College with the school announcing its captains and leaders for 2015 and welcoming NRL superstar Nathan Hindmarsh to the school grounds.

Hindmarsh, who was the long-serving captain and star of the Parramatta Eels before his recent retirement, visited the college to talk to students about the role of good diet and exercise.

The former Australian international also touched on the dedication needed to achieve sporting and other life goals.

Quick chop for tradition IT’S show time again at Killarney with the 103rd edition of the popular local event aiming to bring back some of the traditional attractions as well as the usual sideshow alley, horse and cattle competitions.

The chips will fly in the Woodchop Arena on Saturday as the big men vie for titles, trophies and prize money.

For the early risers, Friday morning will see an intense working cattle dog contest in the Rodeo Arena where the competition often lasts well in to the day.

Terry Gilchrist will again present a full program in the entertainment tent along with an appearance by Eric Summons in his guise as Lollipop, undertaking tricks and bringing a light-hearted touch to the day’s events.

Visitors can enjoy a treat from the nearby trade stalls while listening to live music.

There is sure to be something to suit all tastes.

This show will introduce Elgar - a story teller, Punch and Judy professor, puppeteer and magician.

Elga promises to hold the whole family enthralled with enchanted tales and magical performances.

Riders wait to be called in last year’s competition. Who will be the big winners in this year’s horse events?

The little ones will enjoy his puppets and the other characters that will keep them spellbound.

The RSPCA EMU educational mobile unit has something for the whole family.

Discover new facts about Australia’s unique native animals while taking advantage of the interactive

learning displays - all in airconditioned comfort.

The thrills and spills at the Friday night Jackpot Rodeo always provide family entertainment with barrel racing, poddy rides, mutton busting and a jackpot rodeo.

Then there is time to catch up with friends hitting the rides at Side Show Alley or at the bar while listening

to live music.

Saturday will usher in the main horse events with show jumping, heavy horse classes and a huge field of competitors vying for top honours.

Similarly a full field is anticipated in the cattle classes where trophies and prize money is “up for grabs”.

The pavilion will have the usual competitions with local ladies seeking champion certificates for their prize kitchen recipes.

A keen photographic and art competition is also anticipated in the pavilion while the model trains will be of interest to all “kids” both young and old.

Come along and support this traditional show on 20, 21 and 22 February.

While most show events will only run on 20 and 21, the show will culminate with a team penning competition on Sunday morning.

This is a sport that is gaining a great following and demands skill, horsemanship and team co-ordination.

THE newly formed Warwick Holistic Health Group will host its inagural meeting at Warwick Library tomorrow night from 7pm.

Padding up for the assault on shield MITCHELL SHIELD PLAYER PROFILES THIS Sunday all eyes will be on the C.F. White Oval in Stanthorpe when the Stanthorpe Cricket Association hosts the final of the 2014/15 Mitchell Shield.

The Stanthorpe side remains undefeated and heads into Sunday’s game as warm favourite.

Here are the Stanthorpe player profiles.

Ben Staley (c) (Souths) Patient opening batsman leads from the front. Willing to do the hard work and take the shine off the ball for his team. Good form at club level. The talker of the team who will chat for the whole innings, keeping the boys focused.

Hayden Lanza (Brisbane Wests) One of the key players in the final. Currently playing in Brisbane he travels home for rep cricket.

Has been in cracking form hitting a 50 and 100 in his last two innings. Brilliant in the field and one of the opening bowlers - look for him to get an early break through.

Sam Dowie (RSL) Talented fast scoring batsman plays all the shots. Capable of tearing apart any attack. Due for big score. Possibly the safest hands in the team fielding at second slip.

Luke Brady (RSL) Returns this season back after knee problems. Experienced quality batsman - tough to remove.

Handy change bowler. Bowls good line and length - if the batsman misses, he hits. Good over fielder.

Ross Lupton (RSL) Ex Brisbane Grade player - the fastest bowler in the entire Mitchell. Stanthorpe strike bowler demands and gets respect from the opposition. Can bat anywhere in the top order. A key player in the final.

Adrian Hill (Wanderers) Aggressive middle order batsmen capable of big scores and can put pressure back on the fielding side. Solid in the field - back-up keeper if something goes amiss.

Tom Cameron (Souths) One of the young guns - hard hitting aggressive middle order batsman. Can turn the game with powerful stroke play. Great asset in his favoured mid-off fielding position.

Dean Sullivan (USQ Toowoomba) Another player who travels home for rep cricket. Solid left hand middle order batsman. Developed into a good wicket keeper with quick hands.

THE Aussies are off to a cracking start in the World Cup and the upsets have already begun with the Windies knocked over by the Irish.

There must be an Irish joke to come out of that “to be sure to be sure” but I’m not sure the Windies are laughing.

The Black Caps have looked dangerous in their opening encounters, while the South Africans had a shaky start.

The Poms will be searching for some better fielding and a win in their next game after a shocker in Melbourne.

Hat-tricks and big scores have been highlights of the opening games.

The appalling behaviour of those fans at Merrylands RSL, who ended up in an all-in brawl following the India-Pakistan match, soured the game between the fierce rivals.

India won the battle on the field in what was one of the most highly anticipated of the tournament, drawing an estimated global viewing audience of one billion.

All that and only a week of play.

It will only get better.

- Casey TRACKING FATHER'S FOOTSTEPS MATTY Loy will realise a life-long dream this weekend when he steps into his father’s supercharged Torana in the opening round of the 2015 JP Racing Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series at the Warwick Dragway.

The 18-year-old from Warwick is no stranger to racing - he began his racing career 10 years ago - starting in the Junior Dragster ranks.

In 2010 he claimed the JP Racing Eighth Mile Championship and in 2011 was runner-up in the Australian title before stepping up to the modified bracket last year.

Last year was a very successful season for the apprentice diesel mechanic who works in the family business, F.G. Loy and Sons Earthmoving. He took out the Warwick Dragfest, two Queensland Drag Racing Championship events and Easter in the Country.

Loy is now set to take over the driving duties from his father John in season 2015.

“I have been helping maintain and tune dad’s 1977 LX Hatchback Holden Torana, which is powered by a 1500 horsepower supercharged big block Chev, for the last few years,” Matty said.

“I am so happy to have the opportunity from Dad to race it - it has always been my dream to race his car, ever since I was a little kid. It’s very exciting to be stepping up to the Eighth Mile Outlaws category.”

Loy’s father John plans to take a break from racing in 2015 to concentrate on his son’s Eighth Mile Outlaws campaign. He will also be devoting time to the preparation of new car in which he will compete in 2016.

The JP Racing Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series which gets underway on Sunday celebrates grassroots drag racing at some of South East Queensland’s great regional tracks.

Series two will be held at Willowbank Raceway on 25 April.

It will be a bitter pill to swallow for supporters of the proud club.

Appeals to players from last season and potential new players resulted in only a handful of signings.

It is also disappointing that the club reportedly had difficulty attracting people to take on senior executive positions despite calling several emergency meetings.

This once again highlights the unpredictable nature of the BRL competition in its current format as other teams struggle for numbers.

Prior to this development, Texas had been earmarked to hold the traditional BRL season opening Round Robin competition.

This along with a revised draw will no doubt be be raised at the BRL delegate meeting on Sunday.

Several of the remaining BRL clubs have already arranged trial games in preparation for the upcoming season.

GOOD FOR SOME, NOT FOR OTHERS A LIGHT scarify and sand on the greens in Warwick worked wonders for some of the faster putters. For other it proved disastrous.

It worked well for RR Rumble “controlled stroker” Gordon Barker who carded 22 points one up on Mal Crawford (21). Rundown balls to those on 19 or better. Collecting pins were Greg Wallace (11), Adam Byrne (13) and Daryl Collins (16).

A total of 59 players saddled up for Saturday’s single Stableford sponsored by the Horse and Jockey Hotel Motel.

The winner with 40 points was Ron Simon and runner-up Don Maher on 39 (on a countback). Run down balls went to those with 38 or better.

Sunday a huge field (98) supported The Cancer Council Charity golf day, a four-ball Ambrose event honouring Andy Wilson.

Included in the field were, eight players from the Cudgen Rugby League social golf group players from the Allora, Clifton and Warwick Clubs

as well as a contingent of social players and friends.

Winners of the Bradman’s award were Craig Locke, Chris Hall, Paul Duggan and Dylan Collins. On the more serious side the team of Peter Morrison, Kath Morrison, Bill Morrison, and Tom Bryan had the best nett score (50.625).

Runner-up best nett was Connie Siebel, Marge Burley, Ken Burley, and Robin Farrell on 54.25. Winning the best gross prize with 61 off the stick were Jones, Brendon Jones, Ben O’Dea and Declan Murphy.

Runner-up with 62 gross was Clive Pulley, Peter Walsh, Matt Pulley and Simon Pulley. It was a great day for a wonderful cause thanks to the hardworking committee behind the scenes.

This weekend the Warwick Golf Club will welcome visiting groups from the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Nudgee golf clubs.

Saturday is the Secretary’s Pen. A single Stableford event sponsored by committee secretary Alex McKinlay.

Sunday the club is holding a nine and 18-hole event, members $5/$10pp comp fee. Contact the pro shop for further details.

GEARING UP FOR BUSINESS THERE were some close games on the Lew Breen Green at the Summit Bowls Club as bowlers gear up for the upcoming Club Open Triples and the District Pairs with a round of three bowl pairs.

Brian Brown and Rob Capelli bowled well to defeat Trevor Morris and Dale Barker 24-18.

The experienced pairing of Brian Wilmot and Eddie Zanatta proved too strong for Rod Newlands and Tyler Sweeney 23-19. In other games Graeme Ruby and Len Covill (22) had a good win over Paul Zamprogno and Keith Mungall (14) and Artie White and Michael Sweeney defeated Andrew McGlashan and Ray Spiller 1914.

The Summit Open Triples will be played this Sunday commencing at 9am sharp. Time is running out to nominate your team. If you have not registered you should contact the club as soon as possible.

WINS FOR DUDGEON AND THE ‘BORG THE members of the Inglewood SSAA have been celebrating the electoral success of their Honorary Patron, Lawrence Springborg. For a moment they thought their Patron may have been elevated to Premier however they are said to be equally happy to have the Opposition Leader as their Patron.

While members were digesting this latest electoral information they held a 50-metre muzzle loading shoot on Sunday.

Success on the day went the way of Ray Dudgeon. He took the honours in the event ahead of Stephanie Dudgeon and Cap’n, Graham Morgan.

This week the action turns to pistol - rimfire and centrefire so members and visitors are invited to bring their lunch and enjoy the day.

WATER RATS ANNOUNCE EXCITING PARTNERSHIP AT A time when there has been plenty of negative press surrounding the Rugby Union Code, it is great to see some

positive news emerge from local grassroots rugby.

In what is an exciting development Scots College and Warwick Rugby have struck up a partnership that will bring together junior and teenage rugby. This will give players a full pathway from Under 6 through to senior rugby ranks.

It is no secret that rugby has struggled to gain a footprint on the Southern Downs and it is anticipated this partnership and its benefits will help raise participation in the game and strengthen its profile in the district.

Pivotal to this venture have been the principal of Scots College, Simon Shepherd and Damien Cahill (DJ) the new Sports Co-Ordinator at Scots. Cahill, a respected Level Three Coach will oversee the junior coaching.

A spokesman for the Warwick Water Rats said the pair shared a passion for the game of rugby and what was best for its future - “without their input this important partnership would never have come to fruition. The success of the joint venture is critical to the growth of the code in this region.”

A sign-on day will be held this Saturday at Rugby headquarters in Warwick - Risdon Oval commencing at 11am and organisers are hoping for a good roll-up.

WANDERERS FINALS HOPES BOOSTED WANDERERS notched up what could be a season defining win over South’s last Saturday as the 2014-’15 cricket season heads towards the finals.

In an eye-catching performance, Wanderers put teams on notice as they dominated Souths and picked up two very important bonus points as well as their two points for a win.

Wanderers have now moved to a clear third spot on the table, four points in advance of Souths.

With a very young side, Souths’ in-form skipper Ben Staley is under constant pressure and when he was out early to a good catch in the gully there were ominous signs for his side.

Jordan Lanza was the only player to offer any resistance as the Wanderers bowlers dominated. Brendon Drayton took three wickets without a run scored against his bowling. Scott Armbruster finished with 2/1 and Andrew Einam 2/13.

The Wanderers fielding was outstanding with some great catching backing up a good bowling performance as Souths collapsed to be all out for only 40 runs.

Wanderers opening partnership of Damian Petrie and Rob Yates made light work of the small total, taking only eight overs to reach the required total securing the win.

The race for second and third spot in the finals is now on in earnest.

ITSY BITSY SPIDER AN ITSY bitsy redback spider must have been a little disoriented last Saturday.

It didn’t climb up the waterspout more crawled out of Damian Petrie’s cricket helmet and bit him on the neck.

It might have been Valentine’s Day but there was no love in the bite from this little critter and Petrie presented himself to the Stanthorpe Hospital for treatment.

Fortunately there was a good outcome to the event for Petrie, not so sure we can say the same for itsy-bitsy spider who will not be doing any more climbing in caps or spouts again.

HELLO STANTHORPE ‘HELLOWORLD’ sponsored last Saturday’s Single Stroke played in Stanthorpe.

The course is in great condition, the greens are putting well and there were some good scores.

In the men’s section, Aaron Simmers returned to the winner’s circle with a score of 77 for nett 64 ahead of runner-up David Burgess with nett 65.

Burgess also collected the pin at 3/12 and the pro-pin at 9/18.

Len Leigh claimed the pin at 17.

Hannah Reeves, who was in the first group out on Saturday, hit a very good second shot on hole one and was never bettered for the day to hold the pro-pin on offer at 1/10. Stephen Hooper also had a good day on the course walking away with the pro-pin at 5/14 and claiming a birdie at 14.

The men’s rundown went to scores of 69 and better.

Margie Locke continues to improve her ball striking and was rewarded by winning the ladies’ event with nett 72.

Hannah Reeves was next best with nett 74 and had the best approach at 17 and the pro-pin.

The ladies rundown went to nett 78.

This weekend a single stroke event has been scheduled sponsored by the club. Tee-off is from 11.30am and the timesheet is on the board.

PURPLE PATCH CONTINUES A PURPLE patch of form from RSL has been has been the highlight of the 2014-’15 Stanthorpe cricket season and last weekend the RSL had another good win.

The twilight game was another one-sided affair as the premiership favourites dominated in all areas of the match against Valleys.

Ross Lupton again showed what a great asset he is to the team. With the score at 5/100 in the 30th over, it was not RSL’s best start, but another fine knock from Lupton, (82 not out) and 38 runs from Duane Lihou tipped the game in their favour and highlighted the depth in this side.

The Valley’s bowlers did the hard yards for their batsmen, restricting RSL to 190. Alastair Middleton picked up three wickets while Michael Thompson and John Fletcher each took a pair.

Things began badly for Valleys when opener Alastair Middleton was removed for a second ball duck. From then on it was a procession - of ducks.

In fact four ducks and some great bowling from the RSL attack sank the Valley’s innings.

In a great spell of bowling Tom Garland took five wickets and Dylan Lihou playing alongside his father Duane claimed his first wicket in the senior ranks.

Valleys were all out for 58 in an under par performance as RSL went further ahead on the leader board.

The points table now shows RSL has an unassailable lead heading into the final fixture games.

RSL 59 Valleys 29 Wanderers 24 and Souths 20.

There are no fixtures this weekend due to the Mitchell Shield final on Sunday. Fixtures resume in two weeks with a round of T20 games.

The draw for those games is: Valleys play Souths and Wanderers; Souths play Valleys and RSL; RSL play Wanderers and Souths; Wanderers play RSL and Valleys.

Local Sport 'GARRA OPEN SUCCESS MEMBERS of the Wallangarra Golf Club played a single Stableford last Saturday in preparation for Sunday’s Wallangarra Open event. S. Williams and J. Green finished the round on equal points. After a countback Williams who also claimed the pin shot at nine was declared the winner. D. McMeniman took the Captain’s Stakes and the pin on 11. C. Edwards took the pin shot at 3/15 and K. Williams snared the Approach Shot.

On Sunday Wallangarra members were joined by players from Tenterfield, Toowoomba City, Clifton, Borneo Barracks, and Warwick and Millmerran as an impressive field of 59 players took to the fairways.

In the Ladies Division One C. Welstead was the nett winner; runner-up was L Harber. M. Cook returned the best gross.

M. Jarmin was the nett winner ahead of runner-up M. Locke. R. Fawdon - best gross.

In the Men’s A Grade local knowledge played a significant role in the results. Nett winner was Steve Hampstead; runner-up M. Austin while Michael Cutmore at one under par finished with the best gross.

Peter Butler also drew on his knowledge of the course to return the best nett score in the Men’s B Grade ahead of runner-up P. Townes. Winner of the best gross was C. Hoey.

In the Men’s C Grade, the nett winner was junior player Michael Cutmore ahead of runner-up B. McMillan. D. Morris has the best gross.

Another beautiful morning with light winds that shifted and built up during the day. A commendation to Merv with a personal best score. Also Beth Caskey who scored a perfect in the first round with her new 6.5 x 47 proving the case for experimental cartridges.

Last week at the Crows Nest Club competition, the club won a couple of gongs with Rob Bondfield winning a third overall in target rifle class and Graham Eagle taking the best score for B grade 500 yard range.

SOUTHERN CROSS BOWLS CLUB IT WAS very busy at the Cross last week with our open Carnival on Sunday and the Turkey triples on Wednesday. Thank you once again to the Warwick Credit Union and Hope’s Body Repairs for their sponsorship of our Carnival. It was a huge success with a full green and the visiting teams were from Warwick, Tannymorel, Texas, Killarney, Clifton, Stanthorpe, Warwick East, Goondiwindi and two Southern Cross teams.
