By JOLENE OGLE NOOSA Council has backed a local floating restaurant’s right to ban fishing in its surrounds for safety reasons.

Some anglers are outraged at being told where to fish after Noosa Boathouse placed a sign outside their restaurant banning fishing and netting.

In a letter to Noosa Today, local resident Gary Norris said the sign

“popped up about a month ago” on the foreshore outside the Boathouse restaurant.

Mr Norris said he was concerned his right to go fishing was “being eroded.”

“You simply cannot take away a person’s right to go fishing where they choose along the Noosa River,” he wrote.

Noosa Boathouse lease owner Peter Thynne said the sign was put up to keep diners and anglers safe.

Mr Thynne said people had previously cast nets and fishing lines in the deep water surrounding the floating restaurant and this posed a danger to both the diners standing on the deck and the anglers who might fall into the deep water.

Mr Thynne said part of the lease for the restaurant was to keep the waterways surrounding the floating vessel clear, with the sand in the area dredged to

ensure the restaurant floated.

A Noosa Council spokesperson said council officers accepted the “floating restaurant proprietor installed” the signs in response to safety concerns regarding the depth of the water and hazards associated with fishing occurring close to restaurant patrons.

“We have asked that the signs remain inside the restaurant’s lease area,” the spokesperson said.

Shiny coats of many colours

By KATIE DE VERTEUIL AFTER 40 years of dressing the community in elaborate gowns, shimmering coats and perfectly matched attire, Eumundi’s Elisabeth Esprester is selling her fabric collection.

Sadly, a number of strokes have forced her to put down her needle and thread for good.

The owner of Elisabeth's Costume Hire first learnt to sew as a teenager back in the late 1940s.

Growing up in Munich, Germany following World War II, she was one of many young girls taught the art by nuns after the completion of secondary school.

“You couldn’t buy anything back then; clothes were very hard to come by so the women made them,” husband Gus said.

Elisabeth would knit and sew clothes for her husband and three sons for years before her children grew into teenagers and went their separate ways, resulting in less of a need for the home-sewn outfits.

The local seamstress’s skills were, however, still put to good use, this time in the form of costumes for local theatre groups in Noosa and eventually general hire.

“We’d often have people dropping round after work hours looking for costumes because they wanted something to go out to a party in,” Gus said.

“Our home became the go-to place before fancy dress celebrations and it just grew and grew, the fabrics taking over the house,” he said incredulously looking over at his wife, who smiled cheekily in agreement.

From cotton, silks, and chiffon, to faux, lace and everything in between, an invasion of polka dots, stripes and florals, scatter the rooms of their humble home.

Unfortunately in 2010 Elisabeth underwent open heart surgery.

In the years that followed she went on to suffer a number of strokes and has never fully recov-

ered, leaving her concentration levels insufficient to continue with such a delicate, time-consuming artform.

With an incredible collection of materials going to waste, Elisabeth and her family feel it’s time for her fabrics to find a new home.

“She’s not improving and the fabrics are just collecting dust,” Gus said.

“For the last few years I’ve even had to buy my own shirts,” her husband joked to lighten the mood.

“Through this sale we are hoping the community will be able to get some use out of the high quality material that is now just taking up space here.”

The fabric sale will run out of the Esprester family home at 2 Dean Road, Eumundi every Wednesday to Saturday for the next three weeks.

Opening hours are from 10am4pm. Prices range from $3 upwards, with a huge variety on offer.

Local food the solution to problem HE’S been described as the world’s best farmer and now Joel Salatin is on his way to Noosa for a one-off masterclass at The J. The masterclass is aimed at anyone who wants to start organic or regenerative farming, with practical information and the “nuts and bolts” on establishing an on-farm enterprise that is both regenerative and profitable.

Speaking with Noosa Today, Joel, who runs Polyface Farm, said the more a community embraces a local food system, the more numerous positives follow.

“First, the food is more nutritious and fresher, yielding immediate health benefits,” he said.

“Second, people begin appreciating landscape needs like hydration and soil fertility.

“That in turn starts creating land care accountability in the community and stimulates discussion about how to properly grow food and care for land.

“Finally, eating seasonally engenders a deep dependency on the ecology, encouraging humility toward earth rather than hubris.”

Joel, who has written nine books on farming said, together farmers and the community

can work to see the end of large-scale supermarkets.

“Farmers need to diversify, extend their seasons through storage and be willing to collaborate,” he said.

“Consumers need to embrace seasonality, use their kitchens to prepare, preserve and package, and actually participate in the food system.”

But before Noosa locals can begin to sell their produce around town, Joel said changes need to be made in the regulation of the industry.

“The single biggest hurdle to building a vibrant local food system is government regulation,” he said.

According to Joel, the industry is prone to “price and market access prejudice”, meaning small-time operators aren’t always able to afford compliance costs, stunting their growth as a company.

“That stifles innovation and denies consumers easy access to the antidotes to deficient industrial food,” he said.

“Neighbour-to-neighbour, unregulated food commerce should be viewed as a fundamental human right.”

By DARRYN SMITH MORE than $1800 was raised and over 800 burger were sold at the Acres Juice Bar Betty’s Burgers fund-raiser on Saturday.

More than 1000 people flocked to the fund-raiser, where nostalgic locals indulged in Betty Wallace’s famous $1 burgers.

All funds raised were donated to longtime local Ursula Lockwood, who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis, and is raising funds for much-needed stem cell therapy in Russia.

Ursula, who used to work for Noosa icon Hey Bill, said she was overwhelmed by the response.

“It’s a wonderful and supportive community up here and I feel very much a part of it,” she said.

The event was hosted by Acres Juice Bar owners and good friends to Ursula, Margot and Katie Newman, who organised the event in just two weeks.

Betty Wallace said she was more than happy to come out of retirement and show

her support, along with Hey Bill.

Acres’ owner Ralph Rogers said the Acres precinct was designed to be a place for community events and support.

Mr Rogers said he was “wrapped” to see such a beautiful display of community spirit at the event on Saturday.

“It was fabulous to see over 1000 people come to pay tribute to Betty Wallace and kick start Ursula getting to Russia for her stem cell treatment,” he said.

Service centre process begins PUBLIC consultation has begun for the proposed 24-hour Cooroy service centre and tourist park, with locals urged to make submissions to council by 5 March.

The proposed service centre will include a fast food outlet, public rest area and car wash and is expected to draw its trade from the Bruce Highway.

Cooroy already has two service stations, one on Diamond Street and one

on Elm Street, both of which don’t operate 24 hours.

The development would mean changes to the local planning scheme, with the area from the southern side of Myall Street to the new Bruce Highway works currently zoned as rural.

The proposed Sekisui House development along Yaroomba Beach has come under fire from local community groups.

Amendment just the start THE controversial Sekisui House development will soon be put to bed with Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) giving the developers a 31 March deadline to submit amended concept plans.

Sekisui is proposing to build a five-star international hotel, conference facilities and residential development on land it owns at Yaroomba Beach.

But, 15 of the 17 proposed buildings are in excess of the town plan, meaning changes would have to be made to the planning scheme to accommodate the development.

The local community has slammed the project, holding numerous protests and plastering Yaroomba and Coolum with antidevelopment placards.

Late last year SCC deferred making any decision on whether it would start a possible planning scheme amendment process for the Yaroomba site until more information was provided by the developer on a range of matters, including access and land tenure.

Sekisui House representatives had also notified council the company would carry out additional community consultation on their development proposal.

SCC Mayor Mark Jamieson said the developer had since advised it was considering an amended concept plan as a result of community consultation, but SCC don’t know what the changes will be.

Seniors cricket is one of the fastest growing areas of cricket in Australia and regular matches are played in South East Queensland in winter.

Last November four teams, representing Queensland, travelled to Melbourne to compete in the Ninth Australian Senior Cricket National Championships.

“Council must, however, balance a range of considerations, which includes the interests of the community in having a clear understanding of council’s position on the proposed development,” he said.

“Having the additional information and the amended concept plan is imperative so councillors are fully informed before they consider

whether to commence the process to make an amendment to the planning scheme.

“I have always maintained that having access to all information is in the interest of the whole community, no matter where individuals stand on this issue.

“If - and I emphasise ‘if’ - a decision is made by council to propose a planning scheme amendment, this will only be the start of a process, throughout which the community has input.

By MeGaN WIlSoN AN ELDERLY Noosa woman is calling for more community groups aimed at older people to help ease feelings of isolation and loneliness.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she found a number of barriers to joining groups in the Noosa area, with many aimed at younger people.

“I’m also deaf, so I can’t do groups, but one-on-one interaction is fine,” she said.

“Transport is also a problem when you live far out.”

The woman said many elderly people experience loneliness and isolation as they can’t get to groups or no group exist for them to join.

Noosa Care group care manager Sandra Gunner agreed there is a problem with isolation in the local community.

“Even with in-home care packages, which are often only a few

hours a day at best, the elderly are left alone for long days with often just the television for company,” she said.

Ms Gunner said people often think aged care facilities are “heaven’s waiting room”.

“But the reality is, there is a whole lot of life to be lived in aged care facilities and those lonely nights are not so lonely anymore with staff available 24 hours,” she said.

Ms Gunner said there is a lot of living to be done at aged care facilities.

“We have heard of numerous occasions, from residents who have come to live at Noosa Care, it is the rich activity program and friendships they form with other residents and staff that enriches the quality of their lives,” she said.

“Relatives have made comment that their loved one has a new lease on life and, for some, they are trying things they never have before through our art classes, dance groups and other activities.”

A 21-year-old Noosa man has been disqualified from driving for two-anda-half years and fined $2100 at the Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Xian Pietro Pedretti pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified by a court order, and driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.30 per cent on 19 January at about 11pm.

The court heard Pedretti decided to drive because his friend was a “horrible” driver and the two men were travelling in Pedretti’s car.

The magistrate labelled Pedretti’s driving history as “disgraceful” and said he was a “risk on the road”.

Pedretti was fined $600 and disqualified from driving for two years for driving while disqualified and he was fined $1500 and disqualified from driving for six months for the drink driving offence.

Double drink driving A Cooroy woman has been charged with drink driving twice in as many days, after witnesses saw her stumbling to her car. leanne Beryl Henningsen pleaded guilty to two counts of drink driving in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The first offence was on 1 February at about 6.30pm, when witnesses called police after they saw Henningsen leave a Cooroy venue and stumble to her car. on 3 February at about 2pm, the police were called again when Henningsen was seen leaving the same venue and stumbling to her car.

Henningsen, who works as a personal carer, was charged with driving her car with a blood alcohol content of 0.093 per cent for the first offence and 0.128 per cent for the second offence.

Henningsen was fined $2000 and disqualified from driving for a total of 6 months.

Weapon charges A CoMPouNd bow, a concealable handgun and a self-loading .223 rifle are among the weapons found at a Marcoola property in June 2013.

Marcoola man luke Mulholland, 40, was charged with unlawful possession of the weapons and pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

The five weapons were found in the boot of a car, wrapped in tape. The fingerprints on the tape eventually led to the arrest of Mulholland.

Mulholland was fined $650 and all weapons were destroyed. No conviction was recorded.

Show’s in good hands THE Noosa Show Society is a family affair for newly appointed president Perene Barker with four generations of family taking the reins of organising the iconic Noosa Country Show since its inception in 1909.

Perene’s great-grandfather, J.W. Napier, was the first chairman of the society back in 1909 and was there when 10 acres of land, which would become the Pomona Showgrounds, were bought for three peppercorns.

“It’s just how things were done back then,” Perene said.

The Pomona Showgrounds were chosen for the annual show as it was considered the middle of the Noosa Shire, only a day’s ride by horse to anywhere within the shire.

The effects of the quake were felt throughout Queensland with many local residents from Noosa North Shore to Sunrise Beach reporting shaking.

Noosa Today Facebook likers reported trembles at Cooroy and Federal, while Danielle Taylor of Black Mountain said her windows rattled and the dogs “lost their minds”.

Danny Mackay of Sunrise Beach said she felt her two-storey home sway and Noosa local Andrea Stokie, who is visiting Hervey Bay, said she woke up to strong trembling at 2am.

Noosa Today sales representative Tracey Combes said she woke to her windows and cupboard doors shaking.

“It was really scary,” she said.

“I didn’t know what it was.”

No one is believed to have been injured in the earthquake.

“They say it was my grandfather who modernised the show, but really it was his daughter, my mother, who was the ringmaster at the time,” Perene said.

Now Perene has been handed the reins and says the 2015 Noosa Country Show is only going to be bigger and better with the inclusion of many more contributors and activities.

“The show is for the whole of Noosa Shire to showcase all it has to offer,” Perene said.

The Noosa Country Show is held annually in September at the Pomona Showgrounds and is great value for the whole family.

The Disabled Surfers Association of Australia (DSAA) is calling for volunteers to help make surfing a reality for people who live with an impairment.

The Association is putting on a surfing event for people who want to experience the joy of catching a wave and anyone and everyone is encouraged to lend a helping hand.

Sunshine Coast branch President Tim Byrne said the half day event allows people with all kinds of impairments to truly become a part of the surfing lifestyle Noosa is famous for, but they need your help to make the day a success.

Elder abuse in spotlight THE rarely talked about topic of elder abuse is the subject of a theatre script that aims to educate and raise awareness of issues surrounding our social and legal responsibilities to older people.

The script, Piano Forte, is a Master of Creative Arts project at the University of the Sunshine Coast

by Toni Wills of Peregian Beach, a trained lawyer who has combined her interest in creative writing and theatre with her legal experience.

“Elder abuse is a complex social and legal issue that comes in many different forms,” Ms Wills said.

“It can be psychological, physical, emotional, financial or sexual abuse or neglect – reported cases in Queensland increased by 19.5 per cent in the past year.

“It remains ‘hidden’ in society due in part to a lack of community awareness, ageism and the fact that 80 per cent of the perpetrators of the abuse are family members.

“Sensitive topics like domestic violence are discussed more openly within the community nowadays and I think it’s time that we also began talking about elder abuse.”

Ms Wills cut her legal teeth working in immigration law in Melbourne before moving to the Coast where she currently works as project officer for the Suncoast Community Legal Service while undertaking a Master of Creative Arts at USC.

“My script explores an act of financial abuse which is one of the more common forms of abuse in reported cases. I think theatre is a great way to raise awareness of sensitive issues.”

Piano Forte is about 80-year-old Eliza, who lives alone and has her grandson, Robert, as her carer and power of attorney.

The responsibility of this role, and the competing loyalties Robert has to his pregnant wife, Lucy, affect how he can perform his duties.

The script was developed in part from interviews, transcripts and archival material and tells the story of one woman’s experience of abuse juxtaposed with the legal information she could use to help safeguard herself.

“My hope is that once the script is finalised, we can source funding to develop the theatrical production and see it performed in community theatres and centres,” Ms Wills said.

“I would love to see it used as a resource to raise awareness and educate people about their rights and where they can go to seek help and support.”

USC Theatre will present a free staged reading of Piano Forte, directed by Lucas Stibbard at 4pm on Saturday 21 February in USC’s Lecture Theatre 1 in Building K. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

This will be a staged script reading only, not a full theatrical production.

By DARRYN SMITH IT WAS a sea of red and white as more than 100 dancers took to Lions Park for the third Valentine’s Day, One Billion Rising dance on Saturday.

More than 150 people stopped to watch the spectacle designed to raise awareness and bring an end to violence against women and children around the world.

Dance organiser Gail Hewton, who has a background in dance, started the event in 2013 in response to an article she saw in a Sydney paper about One Billion Rising, a global event where people gather to dance a choreographed routine.

“Alma Lones, a psychotherapist, who works with trauma victims has heard many women say that rising and dancing with wom-

en around the world did more to heal the wound of sexual trauma than years of therapy,” Gail said.

“After our first Noosa event, one participant who had removed herself from a long-term violent relationship, said dancing in our event with so many of her community showed her that people cared and supported her and she realised she no longer needed to feel that shame.”

Councillor Frank Wilkie spoke on the day and said he is passionate about the cause, highlighting the 12 safe houses for women and families experiencing domestic violent in Noosa are always full.

“One in three girls and women over the age of 15 will experience physical violence in their life,” he said.

“That means millions of Australian women have experienced

violence after the age of 15. That’s one billion women around the world.”

Cr Wilkie said one Australian woman is killed in Australia every week as a result of domestic violence, often in front of their children.

“Domestic violence remains the most common factor in homelessness among Australian women and children,” he said.

SAM Webster is shooting for the stars.

The Year 12 student at Good Shepherd Lutheran College is one of just 10 players selected into the under-18 Queensland South state basketball team.

This comes after being invited to be part of the initial State Development Squad in 2014.

Sam attended training sessions in Brisbane over a period of eight weeks late last year.

The team was announced in January following the state championships, which were held in Logan where Sam played in the premier league division for his club, University of Sunshine Coast Basketball Club.

“This is about as high an achievement that a Queensland student can make in the sport, there are two state teams, North and South, 10 players each,” teacher and coach at Good Shepherd Mike Mooney said.

“Sam is one of those 20 players, and still improving.”

It was a terrific day for fundraising for Rosemary, who lost her mother to breast cancer.

The Thursday girls group has a terrific fund-raiser with luncheon next Thursday at Bertoni’s Noosaville.

Selling the good news on rates SMALL business is in for a boost following the Reserve Bank’s Decision to cut rates, according to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland (CCIQ).

CCIQ general manager of advocacy Nick Behrens said the rate cut was just the news Queenslanders needed after the uncertainty surrounding the State Election.

“Queensland businesses continue to report challenging trading conditions with sluggish consumer sales a particular worry,” he said.

I DO wish people would get their facts correct before making scathing assumptions on matters they don’t understand.

Yes, there are beautiful homes and properties in the Lake MacDonald area where residents may not need the CouncilCab, but beyond the dam wall from Six Mile Creek through to the entrance into the forest on Ringtail Creek Road, there lies an enclave of at least 245 rural residential properties originally developed as Forest Acres over 25 years ago.

This area is called Lake MacDonald! Many of the original residents and ‘newies’ who can no longer drive rely on this weekly service to go into Cooroy. The CouncilCab drops them at the top of town and from here they can go to their doctors, dentists, hairdressers, go to the markets, and finish their trip by doing their shopping. The cab picks them up at the IGA at noon and drops them home with their bags of shopping. In some cases, this is the only opportunity for these residents to socialise outside their immediate neighbourhood. Between this CouncilCab service and the RSL community bus, our elderly residents are fortunate to have these options to be able to stay independent in their own homes. Previously as a tight-knit community we have been saddened when valued elderly residents have had to sell and move away because of the lack of transport in this area. This has left a void in the balance of the ages of our residents. Yes we chose to live in our rural idyll because of the lifestyle it offers.

The argument we have heard is that we have chosen to live here and so should be prepared for the challenges that arise with doing so, but why should we have to sell and move away from our own homes that we love and in some cases have lived in for up to 25 years as the result of circumstances beyond our control (ageing, death of driving partners etc). NOOSA Council’s general meeting (Monday 9 February) confirmed there has been little progress in budgeted capital works.

The financial performance report for January 2015 shows only 2.59 per cent of work on bridges, 9.72 per cent on community facilities, 5.21 per cent on pathways, 0.11 per cent on planning scheme, 12.46 per cent on public transport infrastructure, 12.41 per cent on sealed roads network, 8.99 per cent on stormwater drainage and 2.62 per cent on waste management.

After seven months they should be more than halfway through their funding allocation and hence the asset sustainability ratio is well below par.

As an observer at this meeting, I can report that when this topic was discussed by councillors, there was absolutely nothing said about these anomalies. They spoke about investments and surplus but did not mention capital works.

No analysis, no excuses, not even a promise.

Biosphere response IN READING Mayor Noel Playford’s take on the wind-up of the Noosa Biosphere Association (NBA), I would like to respond in the following way. I would like to sincerely thank all the people who helped keep the biosphere dream alive. I would particularly like to thank all the previous directors of Noosa Biosphere Ltd. This company was set up by the former CEO and Mayor Bob Abbot before Noosa was forced to amalgamate. It was the dedication of all the volunteers across this wonderful shire that kept things moving forward. There have been great relationships set up with like-minded volunteers and citizens across the world and going forward, I am sure the members of the new structure, set up by Noosa Council, will be happy to follow in their footsteps.

I urge all community groups and individuals who believe in the ideals of the biosphere, especially the former NBL and their associates’ peoples, to attend the coming meeting to help form the new incorporated body.

That way, I am certain the whole community can unite under the one biosphere banner.

IN HIS recent letter, Trevor Clarey (Noosa Today, 12 February, 2015) suggests that council is paying Noosa Parks Association to carry out scientific studies on the Noosa River. This is not correct.

Noosa Council at its ordinary meeting of 20 November, 2014, agreed to partner with the Thomas Foundation and The Nature Conservancy to carry out two initial projects aimed at finding long-term solutions to improve the health and biodiversity of the Noosa River.

Like all of our council decisions, this information is on our council’s website.

As reported at the time, council’s contribution is up to half the costs of this work, being $25,000. The rest is being contributed by the philanthropic Thomas Foundation.

Some of our favourites included “Are you gonna eat that”, “Do I smell chicken salt?” and “What, me? I’m just waiting for a mate”. councillor, Lew Brennan, who has been out of the media in recent times, sounds very much like a personal vendetta. If anything, it’s obvious to me these three gentlemen truly love Noosa and are disappointed to see it going down the gurgler. And this latest community jury is such a stupid idea it has justified their anger.

I think most people would not have a problem with councils requesting community input in decision making, but why not request feedback via a Facebook page or similar, which is free! Personally, I think it would have been a much better idea to pay for the advice of a professional waste expert, instead of wasting $50,000 on a jury of 24, who have absolutely no experience at all on the subject. Or maybe the Noosa Council should have allocated the money towards their capital works instead which, by the way, is nowhere to be seen.

Blame the right people We all feel for Myuran Sukumaran, Andrew Chan and their families at this time. However, on Sunday (15 February) I attended a wedding reception for two Balinese born Australians living in Noosa.

No-one attending threatened not to visit Bali because of the recent execution order by President Jokowi. This would have been ridiculous at such a peaceful and natural event.

It seems easy for people to suggest action towards others they do not know on a personal level. Even the foreign affairs minister warned Australians will stop going to Indonesia if the execution goes ahead.

Such protest would only hurt many poor people who are our neighbours. It would also hurt families of some of our own citizens as well. There are other ways for us to voice our opinions about actions in other countries.

Attack of good ideas THE Australian public have shown they are fed up with our politicians not listening to us.

Now we have a Noosa Council that is listening and this includes Queensland’s first community jury. Let us now attack good ideas just because they’re new to us here in this small part of the world. The Biosphere Reserve listing - also a first in Queensland - was something to be proud of. So is this innovation in local democracy.

Anyone who went to the public forums before the de-amalgamation vote two years ago knows the over-riding wish from locals was that they wanted to be listened to and participate in decisions that affect Noosa.

Before we have had a chance to see firsthand how the community jury works, a tiny minority are whingeing because they’re used to the old ways when it was mostly the loud-

est voices that were heard. I’m happy for the councillors to do their job and work through the many local issues that take up their time.

On complex, long-term questions where there’s a lot at stake, let’s have every bit of community input we can get.

The community jury is one piece in the puzzle of greater community participation.

Let’s give it a fair go because public participation in the big issues that affect our future is precisely what we asked for when we voted to bring back our council. Let’s embrace this idea and give it a fair go. Seriously, what have we got to lose?

Too exclusive COST makes the Noosa festival exclusive. The cost of entry to individual events and daily tickets are making the Noosa Food and Wine Festival exclusive and elitist. It doesn’t take a mathematician to look at the program for this year to work out only the wealthy can afford to participate in individual food events or a daily visit to the festival. Just look at the program and make you own mind up. Jim Berado and other organisers should look at these facts: There are 50 events; 38 of these are between $105 and $495; 6 events are under $100; 6 events are under $50; Entrance is $40 for adults; Child entrance is $20; and No free drink or food tickets as in previous years.

Therefore, to go into the festival on a daily basis, you will have to pay $56 if you want something to eat and drink since tickets are $8 each. This makes it difficult for people on lower incomes to attend. That is pensioners, making the Noosa Food and Wine Festival exclusive and elitist.

RICHARDSON and Wrench Noosa principal Peter Butt says Noosa is like a brilliant cut diamond with multi-faceted assets such as the numerous beaches, national parks, river, lakes, dining, and many other natural community assets.

“People come to enjoy the outdoors and when the sun shines then the diamond sparkles,” he said.

Mr Butt said 2014 saw the steady growth of the local property market thanks to glorious weather and an influx in visitors.

What is your prediction for the 2015 local property market?

Going forward into 2015, the basic fundamentals of the market will be growth assisted by lower interest rates for the short to medium term.

Supply of properties and willing sellers will be lower than the previous year. This is good news for sellers.

When can we expect to see the next peak in the property market?

The peaks of the property market in 2015 will correspond with the peak occupancy periods of tourism numbers.

The next peak activity period will be the Easter holiday break with expected numbers up on 2014.

FRIDAY FORUM THE peregrine falcon is a powerful bird of prey, or raptor, that specialises in hunting other birds by diving at them in a high speed dive called a stoop. These birds are the fastest animal in the world with stoops recorded at speeds faster than 300km/h.

The guest speaker at the Friday Environment Forum on 20 February will be Bryan Walsh, a former wildlife ranger and director of parks and wildlife, who had the opportunity of observing a pair of breeding falcons from a hide in the Werribee Gorge National Park in Victoria.

Time for a big clean-up LAST year more than 500 volunteers collected over nine tonnes of rubbish throughout the Noosa Shire as part of Clean Up Australia Day. This year marks 21 years since Clean Up Australia Day came to Noosa, with 30 clean-up sites already regis-

tered for the 8 March event.

Councillor Joe Jurisevic will lead the clean-up efforts again as the volunteer co-ordinator for the Noosa region along with Tony Haslam and the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association.

Cr Jurisevic said community involvement was grow-

ing each year, with more sites added to the list.

“Council has once again contributed funds to ensure the day is a success in our region,” he said.

Diverse delights EUMUNDI Markets will be alive with colour on Saturday 28 February when the Pride Fair comes to town.

The Pride Fair Day is part of the Sunshine Coast Pride Festival that celebrates diversity by bringing together the LGBTIQ community, and their friends and family, in a fun and supportive environment.

Commencing in 2008 as an initiative of the Queensland Aids Council, the festival has grown to a weekend-long event with a variety of activities and entertainment to cater for all ages and interests.

Eumundi Market manager Daniel West said this is the second year Eumundi markets have hosted the Pride Day Fair.

Surf reserve becomes a reality at last Life of

AS we get closer to the dedication of the Noosa National Surfing Reserve on Friday 6 March, I feel as though a great weight is about to be lifted from my shoulders, as I’m sure my fellow members of the NNSR steering committee do too.

For although there are some in the community who still seem slightly confused as to what it is and what it might do, and a few who seem totally disinterested, as there always are, the past 18 months of hard slog to get us here has been tough but extremely rewarding because the vast majority of people – whether regular beach users or not – have rallied behind us.

Our appeal for financial help to make this reserve a reality resulted in an incredibly generous response from the business community, the beach user groups and clubs, and individuals who simply thought it sounded like a good idea. One bloke even came up to me at a book signing and said, “I’ve already bought your book, but here’s another $50 for the surfing reserve.”

I can’t list everyone who contributed here (unfortunately) but they will be recognised in another place, and it’s fair to say that the reserve would not have happened without the support of Tourism Noosa, Noosa Heads Surf Club and Noosa Council, while from private enterprise Dowling Neylan Real Estate led the way, with Jive Art and Design Gallery right behind them.

A disparate group of benefactors to be sure, with many others contributing as well, but perhaps all drawn together by their love of the jewel in Noosa’s crown – our superb beaches and point breaks.

On the other side of the ledger, I’m still getting communications from some people who think we’re the fun police, or that “Noosa will become crowded now”, as one guy put it while we watched 75 people paddle for the same wave at First Point recently.

To set the record straight once again, the Noosa National Surfing Reserve carries no legal or statutory authority to ban or prevent any activities on our beaches. Rather, we will aim

to speak as a representative voice of all beach users to influence decision-making relevant to our beaches.

As far as encouraging more surfers to come to Noosa is concerned, well, that bird has well and truly flown, my friend.

The Noosa National Surfing Reserve will be more concerned with encouraging safe and sensible use of our waves, and in preserving the paradise we have for future generations of beach users.

The dedication of the reserve on the eve of the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, will be celebrated with an afternoon of surfing and surf life saving exhibitions, plus free entertainment on the beach stage into the evening, ahead of a massive after-party at the surf club. Please come along and help us celebrate.

Hancock’s Half Hour I SUSPECT it was actually more like three hours long, but the much-heralded mini-series House of Hancock was almost as funny as Tony and Sid’s adventures in East Cheam all those many years ago. The spiteful adventures of Gina and Rose made appallingly good TV, made all the more delicious by the fact that Gina for once didn’t get her own way with her abysmal eleventh hour attempt to scuttle the second episode, the one where the claws come out.

But as funny as it was, the House of Hancock didn’t come anywhere near the real thing for sheer gut-twisting hilarity. I was fortunate enough to see the pilot episode of this real-life soap, and although it’s 30 years ago now, I remember it as clearly as yesterday. Or maybe the day before.

The late photographer Rennie Ellis and I were on assignment in the Pilbara for the newly-launched Australian Geographic magazine, founded by Dick Smith, and through Dick’s connections with the high and mighty, we had been invited to visit the minerals tycoon Lang Hancock on his family estate at Wittenoom, a town chiefly famous for killing people from asbestosis.

We flew into Paraburdoo on a stinking hot afternoon, rented a car and filled the centre console with ice and beer, then dodged kangaroos for three hours as we drove the dirt road to Wittenoom into a setting sun.

The following morning we were picked up early and driven to Hancock’s pile, after first being shown the shards of iron ore of Witte-

The rest, as they say, is history, and so pretty much was old Lang when we were finally ushered into his presence for a formal interview that took place in a room vaguely similar to where I spent 2B, even down to the ink wells and the smell of sour milk.

It was more of a harangue than an interview, but he soon grew tired and was wheeled out.

He seemed in better form at sunset when we all convened in comfy chairs under the trees by the barbecue pit.

This was when we met his recent hire, Rose Lacson, a somewhat stridently sexy house-

keeper/minder who actually sat on Lang’s lumpy old lap while she fed him chopped up steak. Rennie and I were speechless, and had to seek solace in the excellent reds of the house cellar.

The young man who poured wine for us was a real estate agent from Perth named Willie Porteous, who also seemed to be on very good terms with Rose, although he could chop his own meat, if you’ll forgive the expression.

Ah, funny mob, the Hancocks, and great Australians, as Chubby Chops keeps reminding us. Bring on series two. There are plenty more funny stories, I can assure you.

Band makes the music live at the RSL WE’VE heard Rumours and they could be Sweet Little Lies but probably not - yep it appears Rumours are set to play the Tewantin-Noosa RSL on Saturday, night.

As you can probably guess the Australian Fleetwood Mac Experience, Rumours is a band aimed at keeping the music of Fleetwood Mac alive.

While Fleetwood Mac still technically exists, the creator of the band, Mick Fleetwood is the only original member remaining.

The band hasn’t toured since 2009 and has only played limited gigs since then also but diehard Fleetwood Mac fans still have Rumours.

This award-winning act includes Joanne Stanley performing as Fleetwood Mac’s breathtaking songbird, the mysterious and charismatic, Stevie Nicks.

Debbie Hinton mirrors the alluring and brilliant keyboards and vocals originally performed by Christine McVie. Graeme Thompson is at his best as the solid bass master, John McVie who was the “Mac” of Fleetwood Mac. While, Rick Hay portrays the moody, artistic and sensitive song and guitar man, Lindsay Buckingham. And to complete the show, the powerful drum sound of Mick Fleetwood is performed by Terry Gascoigne.

Song and dance makes sisters’ day INTERNATIONAL Women’s Day rocks this year thanks to a high energy concert being held at the House with No Steps on Saturday 7 March.

The event, kicking off at 6.30pm at the venue’s Charles Duke Drive address in Doonan, is a chance for Noosa women to come together to celebrate International Women’s Day with a fun-packed night of singing and dancing.

With limited spaces, organisers are inviting women to get in early for tickets, bring their man and wear lots of purple and green with all proceeds going to a local women’s shelter.

Talented local sassy and sexy women aged 13-92 will perform a variety of acts including singing, dancing, comedy and poetry to entertain, inspire and empower at the event aimed at showcasing the talents of women on the Sunshine Coast.

Well-known musician Michelle Brown will headline the event with her newly formed rock trio Kitty Kats, also including Susan Campbell and Renae Suttee.

The fabulous Doo Wop Dolls with their flouncy petticoats and

flip wigs will entertain with the sensational songs of the sixties.

Sissy, Cherry, Dani and Ellie will strut the stage with vibrant song and dance.

Popular star of the Noosa Arts Theatre, Michelle Lamarca - well known for her role in Westside Story and Gerry’s Girls - will perform her own brand of jazz, rock and pop.

Also on the program are the Trish Couper Duo, singing a unique brand of covers and originals; and Emma Freeman, the legendary 92-year-old long-time (70 years long) Noosa resident artist, activist, poet and author who is set to inspire with her stories.

There will also be a special performance of ‘Break the Chain’ from V-Day 1 Billion Rising by all attendees who wish to participate.

The event is $25 per person, bring a picnic, wine, table cloth, candle and necessities. Tables and chairs and entertainment provided and there will be pizzas available on the night.

IF a telephone conversation with Melbourne funnyman Adam Richard is anything to go by, then his stand-up show at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club is guaranteed to be a laugh a minute.

From the time Adam answered the phone to the time he hung up his catchy laugh and hilarious personality roared out of the receiver.

Audiences will be treated to a raw and hilarious show where you’ll see the true Adam, plus a little more.

“If people have seen me on television, it’ll be that but a little grubbier, some more swear words,” Adam said.

Adam, who was one of many class clowns throughout school, said he realised he was funny about 10 minutes after he realised he was gay.

“I will be talking poofy and hoping for the best,” Adam said.

Adam’s stand-up career has spanned nearly two decades and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down as Adam prepares for the upcoming Melbourne Comedy Festival.

“I’m doing a show called #FGT which is about bullying and how it is celebrated,” Adam said.

Adam is appearing as part of the Sit Down Comedy Club, on Friday 20 February, at the Sunshine Beach Surf Club.

Chocolate Yoghurt Dip Serves 4 Ingredients: 2 tablespoons milk.

100g dark chocolate, finely chopped.

2/3 cup thick Greek-style natural yoghurt.

Fresh fruit to serve (such as strawberries, watermelon and pineapple).

Method: 1. Heat milk in a small saucepan over low heat until very hot and foamy, but not boiling.

Remove from the heat and add chocolate.

2. Set aside for 2-3 minutes to melt, then stir until smooth. Pour into a medium bowl and stir in yoghurt. Refrigerate for one hour until thickened and cool.

3. Peel and slice fruit, or use a biscuit cutter to cut into shapes and thread onto skewers.

Serve fruit dippers with chocolate yoghurt dip.

Berry Breakfast Smoothie Bowls Serves 2-3 Ingredients: 1/2 cup ice cubes.

2 bananas, frozen, peeled and sliced.

1 cup natural yoghurt.

3/4 cup frozen berries.

1/2 cup milk.

1 tablespoon chia seeds.

2 teaspoons honey.

1/2 cup oven-toasted fruit muesli.

Fresh blueberries, to serve.

Method: 1. Blend or process the ice, banana, yoghurt, berries, milk, chia seeds and honey until smooth. Scrape down the sides of the blender, if required. Add an extra tablespoon or two of water if a little more moisture is needed in the blender to keep the ingredients moving.

2. Pour smoothie into two or three chilled bowls and top with muesli and fresh blueberries. Serve immediately.

I LOVE summer. It’s a time to drink too many cocktails, become a social butterfly and spend way too long lazing in the sun with a good book and no second coat of sunscreen.

When I was in my teens, I would finish summer looking tanned, refreshed and ready for the year ahead, but now, hurtling towards 30, I just end up looking haggard, bloated and somewhat leathery.

The raw truth is, as we age our skin simply needs more care. Kind of like a good pair of heels. You need to look after them if you want them to last another party season.

My face wipes and cheap moisturisers weren’t cutting it anymore so it was time to seek professional advice.

Susan Priestley is a dermal clinician at Riverside Beauty, Noosaville, and while the job title sounds scary, she is anything but. Apart from the “tsk tsk” muttered when I said I remove make-up with a $2 bag of face wipes, Susan was understanding and full of expert advice to get my skin rejuve-

tion leaving my skin plump, healthy and hydrated.

Stage two, IPL. You may have heard of IPL, or Intense Pulse Light therapies, used to remove hair or dark pigmentation. The technology can also be used on the face to improve the condition and texture of sun-damaged skin. Age-spots, broken capillaries, freckles and pigmentation are also on the hit list. But the best use for IPL, in my opinion, is the stimulation of anti-aging collagen growth. Collagen equals youthful skin. Yay. The entire treatment took less than an hour and I left Riverside Beauty with a new cleanser, plans to invest in Vitamin A cream and much finer forehead wrinkles than the day before.

It’s been a week since the treatment and the frown lines between my brows are much fainter, the skin on my nose and chin is still smooth and I have finally found a goodquality Vitamin A cream to keep up my new beauty regime.

By DES ADSETT FOLLOWING our first meeting with our new committee, Coolum Tennis Club had a working bee on Saturday morning.

This proved a huge success with the removal of three large trailer loads of garden rubbish as well as filling a number of bins.

We have never achieved so much at a working bee before.

It was a tremendous effort by all involved and a great start to the year.

I would like to thank Doug Bosworth, Leon Nguyen, Henry Plint, Des and Annette Adsett, Noelene Cook, Arvid, Ian White, Joy Denton, Kerry Glover and the junior parent helpers, Trish Mc Waters and Rachael Willis for their help.

Adam has also put up the new noticeboard, where as well as being able to write up fixture and tournament matches, we will now have a list of jobs that need doing.

This will allow any willing tennis player with the time and expertise, to complete the task and hopefully lighten the load for the few dedicated workers who continue to give so much of their time.

At our committee meeting, we welcomed three new members, Leon Nguyen, Emma Wagstaff and John Gallagher.

They are invaluable for fresh input into growing our club.

By the time you read this, we should have new lights installed on the hard courts ready for the new format night fixtures.

Let me remind you that there will be play on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The format will suit social players as well on both Monday and Thursday night.

Oliver’s on the ball in futsal

UP and coming futsal champion, Oliver Blackmore has had an incredible year playing the sport that he loves.

The Good Shepherd Lutheran College Year 11 student was selected to be part of the 2014 Queensland under-15 boys futsal team.

Oliver’s training schedule involved several months of travelling to Brisbane every Sunday morning, initially for state trials and then after selection, to train with his team.

The year concluded in Sydney in January, when Oliver and his team competed at the national futsal titles.

Due to illness the team had to leave their coach behind and the team manager stepped up to the coaching role on the eve of the tournament.

This did little to dampen the spirits of the defending champions, with the Queensland boys were narrowly defeated in the semi-final on penalties by NSW Lightning.

Scores were locked 2-2 following extra time and the speed of play and high level of skill was very impressive.

Oliver is now committed to continue his training towards the state titles, which will be held over the Easter school holidays.

His commitment, dedication to training and obvious skill, will no doubt put him in the mix to be selected to represent his state again this year.

The Buoyed Up program with NYRC is not only education but a whole lot of fun.

NYRC creating brighter futures for indigenous youth. a tackers level one certificate but, more importantly, are given the opportunity to build self-esteem, develop motor skills, enhance resilience, learn about their environment and value team work.

An evaluation of the program by the University of Canberra Institute of Sports Studies found that the new positive experiences may be the key to re-engaging children at school and reducing the risk of social exclusion for disadvantaged children.

“With a better education these children will not only be helped in the present but their future

prospects will be enhanced tenfold allowing access to greater employment options and more affordable and comfortable lifestyles,” Mr Blundell said.

“However, as a small community sporting club we just do not have the funds to run the program each year.”

With a recent generous donation of $1000 from a Sydney lawyer for the program, Mr Blundell is hoping those closer to home will also show their support.

“If the 5000 local businesses of Noosa gave just $1 a month, they would have enough money

for the year,” Mr Blundell said.

“Or, with over 30,000 motor vehicles registered in the Noosa region, if every car owner donated $2 a year we could fund the program for a year.

“These statistics prove that if we each just pitch in a little, we can help make a difference to these young children’s lives.”

Twists and turns as the clock ticks down place on the Senior Showjumping Squad, with Anton, for the next Olympic Games.

This is a result of his many wins and consistent form on this South Australian horse over the past 12 months.

Billy did a scorching round on last year’s speed class winner, Chronic Dominant Visage, coming home in 47.35 seconds, but pulled a rail on the second last jump, the first element in a pair that undid many riders because of the tight turn that was needed to set their horses straight before this jump.

In a fine display of centred, accurate riding Matthew Whally brought his dark bay horse, Aphrodite, home in a time of 51.02 seconds to take out first place.

As well as winning $400, Aphrodite won a beautiful woollen rug donated by the show’s main sponsors, Sandale Saddlery.

AFTER a competitive final 2014 season of Wednesday and Thursday night competition, the Noosa Tennis Club is excited to introduce the first season for 2015.

Over the last two months, with plenty of tennis on TV, we are delighted to see so many new faces inquiring about tennis comps and lessons this year.

Noosa Tennis Club staff are also amazed to see how many people, who after playing tennis as juniors are coming in to rekindle their tennis careers, after not having played for 10-15 years.

These clients can still hit a great ball and the club welcomes them and any other members of the community to get involved this year for some great tennis.

Noosa Tennis Club director of tennis David McMahon organises in-house competitions and social tennis.

This is a great way to start the year off meeting new people and having fun while playing some tennis to keep fit. The new season of social competitions is just about to begin with a trial week starting over the next couple of weeks.

Members and non-members, men and women of all levels are welcomed. Being a new year we are looking to find as many new players as possible.

The Wednesday and Thursday night competition runs from 6.45pm to 9.30pm and players can play doubles or singles.

MORE than 300 horses filled Nambour Showgrounds last weekend for the Sunshine Coast Showjumping Club’s Grand Weekend of Showjumping.

The event got off to a flying start with the state’s top riders testing their skills in a 1.30m speed class on Friday night.

In spite of inclement weather a healthy crowd turned up to cheer each of the riders on as they pushed their horses to the limit around a tight, testing course, designed by Paul Raymont. There was a hair’s breadth between the two top place getters with Cooroy’s Billy Raymont on Anton pipped by one-hundredth of a second and relegated to second place behind Kilcoy’s Matthew Whally.

Sport proves a smash winner

NOOSA Yacht and Rowing Club is once again calling on the community to get behind its Buoyed Up with Tackers sailing program.

Each year the local sporting group seeks to raise in excess of $60,000 to fund the initiative which is designed to provide Indigenous children aged from seven to 12 years old with a fun, confidence building sailing experience as a reward for improvements in school attendance and behaviour.

However, with no state or federal support the task is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain.

“The lack of attendance of Indigenous children at school remains a massive issue and teachers can’t change this if these students aren’t coming through the doors,” club sailing manager Paul Blundell said.

“This program is a soft touch way of encouraging school attendance through rewarding those who do come through selecting them to participate in Buoyed Up. “And we have seen first-hand the results with some students having gone from 20 per cent attendance to 85-90 per cent.”

THEY were the type of surf conditions that gave a true indication as to the capabilities of the competitors. Good big surf with waves dumping on a sand bank.

The beach was Alexandra Headlands and the occasion was the Queensland Surf Rescue Championships - Champion Lifesaver, Board Riding and First Aid. The championships attracted more than 200 life savers from all over the state, and were conducted over three days. The overall demand on fitness and surfing capabilities bought out the best in all who took part.

With 17 clubs registered, the overall point score winners were Northcliffe, with host club Alexandra Headlands second and Sunshine Beach third.

In the handicap point score Noosa finished first, Coochiemudlo Island second and Point Lookout third.

One factor taken into consideration in the handicap division is the number of contestants and officials in each team.

Third place for Sunshine was indeed an outstanding performance.

Over the last four years they have finished in the medals in these events at the Australian Titles. For such a small club the results speak volumes for both the coaching panel and high calibre of their young members.

In the under-15 and under-17 patrol competitions, Sunshine finished second. Second place for the 17s automatically qualifies them for the Australian titles; but because there is no under-15s at the titles, they unfortunately can go no further. In the female under-14 division, champion life saver Talisa Brady was first and Katie Gleeson second. The men’s under-14 and under-17 saw a double for the Redwood family when Jonty won the 14s and his brother Brock won the 17s.

Brock’s win also qualifies him for the Australian titles.

Nipper Isabella Harry, 11, has been disgnosed with bone cancer called Osteosarcoma. were: under-15 first aid - Sally Wytenburg and Sarah James who finished second; this being the state final, their second place automatically puts them into the Australian titles. For female champion life saver under-19, Charlotte Webber was first and in the under-14 female, Emily Lethbridge finished third. Emily then backed up to take first place in her board riding division. Good luck for the nationals.

In December 2010, a story appeared in a local newspaper. It told of a Nambour family involved in the Nipper movement at Mudjimba.They were the Harry family and for parents Shae and Emma, children Isabella, aged 7, Angus, 4 and Lewis, 3, the Sunday morning on Mudjimba Beach was, in the words of Emma, “a great way to spend a Sunday morning as a family”.

Because Isabella had turned 7 that year she was eligible to join what was at the time, the youngest age group on the Nipper program.

Now four years on, the joy of beach life has been overshadowed by a major health problem for Isabella. Now aged 11, Isabella - affectionately known to her little friends as Bella - has been diagnosed with a bone cancer called osteosarcoma. This young Nipper will, unfortunately, celebrate her 12th birthday in a Brisbane Hospital undergoing her first round of chemotherapy in a few weeks. To help overcome the financial burden that goes with cancer diagnosis and treatment, the Mudjimba Surf Life Saving Club will on the evening of 28 March 28 run a fund-raising night at the Wadiny Room Twin Waters.

Apart from her involvement in the Nippers, this little princess competes in netball, swimming, cross-country running and athletics. Her main aspiration in life was to become a professional athlete like Jordan Mercer or Australian netballer Laura Geitz.

THE Noosa Heads Surf Club will form an historic partnership with the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing and the Noosa National Surfing Reserve next month to present a Waterman Weekend, celebrating all forms of wave-riding.

Once sworn enemies, the “clubbies” and the “surfies” of Noosa have been working and playing in harmony for years, but the Waterman Weekend will be a collaborative first for the festival.

One of three “Granite Bay” major sponsors of the new National Surfing Reserve, the Noosa Heads Surf Club will host an afternoon of exhibition surfing on the eve of the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, Friday, March 6.

It will feature a fun clash between the legends of ironman and the legends of surfing, over a short ironman course incorporating surfboard riding, devised by Noosa coach Darren Mercer. Former champion ironman Darren Mercer and daughter, current ironwoman sensation Jordan Mercer, will be among the legends representing surf lifesaving, while shortboard champions Layne Beachley and Simon Anderson, and world champions of longboarding Harley Ingleby and Josh Constable will represent the board riders.

Clubbies and surfies will finally pass the olive branch in a weekend of oceanic activities and post-surf entertainment. Featuring the broadest representation of surfing skills ever seen at Noosa at the same time - including surf club paddleboard surfing, stand up paddle surfing and racing, body surfing, sustainable wood boards exhibition, finless surfing, longboarding, shortboarding, tandem, tag team surfing and, of course, the VetshopAustralia surfing dogs.

Waterman weekend will take place across the opening weekend of the Cricks Noosa Festival of Surfing, 6-8 March.

A Summer Beach Bar will operate each afternoon through the sunset hours, with live bands, film screenings and other entertainment, including the official festival opening ceremony, a Welcome to Country, and the Magoo Memorial paddle-out in honour of Barry ‘Magoo’ McGuigan on Saturday evening.

CHAMPION Ironman Zane Holmes’ dedication to surf lifesaving led him to create the Medibank Wave Warriors Junior Challenge.

Now in its fifth year, the event attracts competitors from across Australia and New Zealand and will take place on Noosa Main Beach this Saturday for the second time.

As well as international and interstate Nippers, locals are also taking to the challenge with Noosa and Sunshine Beach entering competitors.

Wave Warriors, which took out the Best Sporting Event in Queensland award at the 2014 Australia Event Awards, is open to Nippers aged nine to under 15.

The event is set up to mirror the famous Kellogg’s Ironman series and to promote further development for junior life savers in this iconic Aussie sport.

Zane said his goal in setting up the event was to create a unique ocean and beach spectacular for junior life savers to come together and compete in an exciting competition.

Wave Warriors is proudly supported by Tourism Noosa who said the event is one of 19 tourism events Tourism Noosa sponsors through the calendar year.

Tourism Noosa CEO Damien Massingham said the Medibank Wave Warriors Junior Challenge was a great event for Noosa, attracting competitors from around Queensland and also interstate.

Mr Massingham said events such as Wave Warriors added to the diversity of events on offer in Noosa.

“All 19 events bring significant economic benefit to our region helping to retain and create jobs while assisting to put Noosa on the map as the events capital of Queensland,” he said.

By JO SEARLE NOOSA Outrigger Canoe Club teams recently contested the National Sprint Titles at Kawana, and didn’t come away disappointed.

Gold was the main colour of the three-day event.

It was double gold for NOCC’s platinum teams (aged over 70 years), with Di Arbuckle and Jo Terrans, and Roger Arbuckle and Brian Rogers winning gold in their Platinum OC2 250 races.

Brian Rogers and Roger Arbuckle both entered the Platinum Men’s 500m OCI race where Roger won Gold. Brian closely followed Roger across the line but was disqualified for coming in on the wrong side of the flag. Roger Arbuckle also entered the Golden Masters OC1 250m, winning his first heat, but was later pipped by much younger men in the field.

Stacey Phillis and Pascale Hegarty competed in the Master Women OC2 250m. They took out bronze in the final – both elated as it is was their first OC2 race together, in what was a very close race.

The Master Women’s team – Stacey Phillis, Pascale Hegarty, Raquel Hamnett, Susie Blumentals, Kathleen Gentry and Jane Coveny went into the OC6 500m final with the fastest heat time, and won silver in the closely contested final.

The Master Mixed team – Stacey Phillis, Pascale Hegarty, Raquel Hamnett, Martin Courtnay, Shane Hegarty and John Goller – contested the 500m final with a field of 20 teams, coming in a respectable fourth.

The Novice Women’s team – Lisa Phelan, Jill Bingham, Angela Pickering, Jen Fraser, Kylie Cirillo and steered by Stacey Phillis backed up their state sprint win with another gold in the 500m final. They’re enjoying the winning start to their new sport.

Craig Harris and Garry Hanlon – won silver in the 1000m OC6 race.

In the same race, Golden Masters Team 2 were just over two seconds behind to win bronze, the team being Bob Hobart, Glen Knoblauch, Lynn Mills, Roger Arbuckle, Des Mabbott and Roger Chaffey.

There were a total of 70 crews disqualified over the three days because of the confusion with the lane configuration on the course, including Marco Rocco who received his first ever disqualification in 22 years of racing.

Just two days before the nationals, Ted Baker, an Adaptive Paddler (AP), was asked to compete in an AP OC2 race.

Tina Standish, a great supporter and coach for the AP group at Mooloolaba, combined with Ted and they competed in their first OC2 race together. They missed out on a placing by a mere few seconds ... but who was counting.

NOCC members were all cheering them on for just having the guts to enter.

New format a triples’ treat In the

ditch POMONA BOWLS WEDNESDAY triples had 24 players vying for the prize money. The new game format of two by one hour play proved very popular.

Winners on the day were K. McInnes, D. Mallett and N. Homer (s), with J. Muir, J. Rabjohns and K. Muir (s) as runners-up.

Thursday’s “Surprise” event was won by W. Horn, L. McDougall and R. Murray.

Friday twilight bowls was another successful afternoon with 26 players taking to the green.

Winners were D. Cone and B. Alford (+12) with runners-up J. Davies, D. O’Neill and F. Long (+9) not far behind.

The jackpot was won by D. Debus and K. Muir.

Saturday’s super challenge was on home turf this week and proved a very close contest between Pomona and Kenilworth.

Pomona managed to triumph, however, with a 3-2 win.

Mel Hobbins was a standout on the day, once again keeping his cool to win 31-27 after a mammoth 38 ends.

Steve Chandler, Russell Murray and Greg Hodder had a very close game winning on the last end 26-22.

The fours team led by Keith Muir and the pairs of Trev Walsh and Walter Horn were less successful in the challenge, leaving the pairs team of Bill Alford and Mark Doran to bring home the bacon.

This was a nail-biting finish as they were the last team on the green and Kenliworth was holding four shots and a likely win.

It was indeed, as Bill put two bowls on the jack to hold to the end for a 19-17 win.

On Sunday afternoon Pomona took on Cooroy for the final round of the 2014 Warner Harris Shield.

Once again Pomona was victorious, scoring 186 against Cooroy’s 174.

NOOSA HEADS BOWLS IN Saturday’s Super Challenge round, Noosa’s Section 5 Bronze ladies continued on their happy way with a significant win over Nambour, to gain the maximum 10 points.

The men’s Section 5, also at Nambour, scored in the singles and triples, taking two points from their encounter.

Section 8 teams were at home to Solander Lakes, winning two rinks in the men’s matches and one rink all in the ladies, but going down on aggregate.

Next Saturday, the Section 5 teams will travel to Tewantin, the Section 8 men are at home to Scarborough and the ladies have a bye.

Last Tuesday’s men’s pairs winners were Brian Emery and George Coules. Runners-up were Brian For and Nick Gelavis.

Bill and Jan Burkitt won Friday Open Jackpot Pairs with Allan Pearson and Daphne Reed claiming the second prize.

John Chaning-Pearce once again won Saturday triples, joined this time by Margaret Mills and Fabio Cantori.

Opening matches in the ladies A singles club championship were played last Wednesday.

There are now eight players left, with quarter-finals being decided this week.

The draw for the men’s A singles has been made.

- GREEN MASTER COOROY BOWLS THE businesses of Cooroy have well and truly shown their support of their local bowls club through their support on a Wednesday night.

Sixteen teams battled it out this week with SEC, Jacobson’s, Bonnells, Renderers, Treble Clefs, Belvedere, Pages and Thunderbirds taking home the winning points.

‘High Rollers’ on Thursday night was once again well supported with JeLS, Tag Team, Eumundi Boys, Bushrangers, Night Owls, High Rollers and The Honeys coming out on top.

Tuesday’s jackpot pairs: Kerry Knowles and Brian Mitchell, with Roley Hassall and Gale Duffield as runners-up.

The sponsored day on Thursday saw a full green of players. Ray McComb and Les James were the overall winners. Runners-up were Kerry Knowles and Ken Christensen.

Rolley Hassall and Col Nalder were first round winners, while Brian Mitchell and Lester Krosch had the highest score in the second round.

The Hinterland Challenge round this week was played at home. The ladies drew both games against Nambour Heights while the men went down 3-1 to the boys from Palmwoods.

The biannual challenge between Cooroy and Pomona, The Walter Harris Shield, was held on Sunday afternoon at Pomona.

Pomona proved to be too strong this time beating Cooroy by just eight points.

A follow-up challenge at Cooroy will take place later in the year.
